Remember when a Republican amendment to curtail Obamacare backfired in a surprising way?
A three-judge panel for the Ohio Tenth District Court of Appeals ruled that gender-affirming care for minors constitutes an essential medical treatment for trans youth and that the ban on gender-affirming care is in violation of a state constitutional amendment. Originally passed by Republicans to undermine Obamacare, the amendment is now being used to prevent federal or state intervention in denying any form of essential healthcare. The ban on gender-affirming treatment in Ohio started in January of last year when Ohio legislatures approved H.B. 68. The bill did two things: ban hospitals from providing gender-affirming treatments to trans minors and ban trans girls from participating in girls’ sports. Related Remember when a Republican amendment to curtail Obamacare backfired in a surprising way? Gov. Mike DeWine (R), despite signing an executive order around that time banning hospitals from performing “gender-affirming surgeries on minors,” attempted to veto H.B. 68, only for the Republican majority to override him. Insights for the LGBTQ+ community Subscribe to our briefing for insights into how politics impacts the LGBTQ+ community and more. Subscribe to our Newsletter today DeWine stated his reasoning as follows: “Were I to sign House Bill 68, or were House Bill 68 to become law, Ohio would be saying that the state, that the government knows better what is medically best for a child than the two people who love that child the most: their parents.” Two families of transgender youth, represented the ACLU of Ohio and the law firm of Goodwin Proctor, filed a suit against the ban. Judge Michael J. Holbrook of Franklin County issued a temporary restraining order blocking the enforcement of the ban when it comes to pharmaceutical treatments. Disappointedly, that same judge would later reverse his decision and uphold the ban. “Make no mistake–this fight is not over,” Harper Seldin, senior staff attorney with the ACLU, said in a statement at the time. Indeed, the fight was not over. In a smart move, the plaintiffs argued that gender-affirming treatment be considered essential medical treatment, pointing to the numerous medical studies proving its effectiveness in treating gender dysphoria and improving the mental health and well-being of transgender adolescents. For that reason, they argued, it should protected under Ohio’s Health Care Freedom Amendment. The amendment was passed in 2011 and was pushed by the state’s right wing, with help from the Ohio Liberty Council, Ohio Right to Life, and then-state Sen. Bob Peterson (R) as an attack on the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare). In doing so, they inadvertently gave Ohioans broader constitutional protections around healthcare because the amendment prohibits any law from banning “the purchase or sale of health care or health insurance” or even imposing a fine on such purchases. The state responded to this argument by saying that gender-affirming care doesn’t qualify as health care. They relied on the testimony of anti-trans medical “experts,” but the judges looked at the so-called experts’ credentials and found them to be unreliable state witnesses. Dr. James Cantor, as described in the ruling’s notes, “is not a physician, has never practiced as a licensed clinical psychologist in the United States, is not licensed to treat patients under the age of 16, and has never provided treatments to patients under the age of 16.” Dr. Paul Hruz had a history of anti-trans advocacy. Citing his testimony in a transgender bathroom ban case, he stated: “Conditioning children into believing that a lifetime of impersonating someone of the opposite sex, achievable only through chemical and surgical interventions, is a form of child abuse.” The court also found that “he never diagnosed or treated a patient with gender dysphoria.” Dr. Stephen Levine, the state’s sole witness, did have experience in this field. However, he testified that he does not support a categorical ban on gender-affirming treatment and provided no evidence that such care was unsafe. With the state’s only expert failing to justify the ban, the decision to rule gender-affirming care as a protected form of essential health care was made. Freda Levenson, legal director at the ACLU of Ohio, celebrated the decision: “Today, we celebrate this win not only for our brave plaintiffs but for all LGBTQ+ Ohioans and their families. This win restores the right of trans youth in Ohio to choose vitally important health care, with the support of their families and physicians. We are gratified by the Court’s decision, which soundly rejects this interference of politicians with Ohioans’ bodily autonomy. Although this litigation will likely not end here, we remain fervently committed to preventing this egregious bill from ever again taking effect. The path towards protecting the rights and civil liberties of trans Ohioans goes on, and we will continue to hold the torch.” Subscribe to the LGBTQ Nation newsletter and be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

A new college football season brings CFP tweaks, new rules and jersey patches among the changes
Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman shakes hands with his players as they come off the field after scoring a touchdown against Arkansas during an NCAA college football game Sept. 27, 2025, in Fayetteville, Ark. (AP Photo/Michael Woods, File)2026-08-20T11:10:06Z A new college football season brings plenty of hopes, discussion and changes. Here are the most notable offseason developments to know about before the games begin: Tweaks to the College Football PlayoffThis happened in the dead of winter so in case you missed it: The CFP reiterated that automatic bids will go to the champions of the Power Four conferences — the Big Ten, SEC, ACC and Big 12. The CFP’s highest-ranked team in the Group of Six will also get a spot, whether it’s a conference champion or not. Group of Six, you say? Yes! The Group of Five is now a plus one with the relaunched Pac-12 joining the American, Conference USA, Mid-American Conference, Mountain West and Sun Belt. From there, the next seven-highest ranked teams, regardless of conference, will fill out the rest of the 12-team bracket. But Notre Dame!Another tweak to the 12-team CFP bracket: If Notre Dame finishes the season ranked in the top 12 by the CFP it will automatically secure a playoff berth. It’s a more straightforward approach than last year, when Notre Dame fell short of the playoff despite being ranked No. 11 by the committee. Instead, Tulane and James Madison earned the final two spots as two of the five highest-ranked conference champions. One last thing about the CFP: Discussions continue over whether to expand to 16 or even 24 teams. A lighter consequence for targetingRule changes are to be expected in any offseason, and this year targeting was the headliner. In 2026, a player’s first targeting offense will no longer impact their availability for the next game. If a player is disqualified for targeting a second time during the season, they will be held out for the first half of the following game. A third offense calls for a next-game suspension. Read More Conferences can initiate an appeals process after a player’s second offense, which would call for a video review facilitated by the NCAA national coordinator of football officials. If the appeal is successful, the player will be able to play the full game. One of the more notable targeting penalties last season was on Miami DB Xavier Lucas in the fourth quarter of the Fiesta Bowl, causing Lucas to sit out for the first half of the national championship game loss to Indiana.Another rule change fans will notice: Offensive pass interference is now a 10-yard penalty instead of 15. A new scoring opportunityAnother rule change this offseason will allow teams to attempt a field goal after a fair catch. The kicker can choose to drop kick from where the returner caught the ball, or they can use a holder with no tee. Some fans may recall a recent NFL version, when Chargers kicker Cameron Dicker hit a 57-yarder before halftime against Denver in December 2024. Do not adjust your setsThe NCAA cleared the way for schools to land new revenue by placing sponsored jersey patches on uniforms as of Aug. 1 and, boy, there are going to be a lot of those. Ohio State and Notre Dame alone reportedly have patch deals worth a combined $30 million, but there are so many others — Tyson Foods (Arkansas), Axle Logistics (Tenneseee), SRM Concrete (Vanderbilt), Ripple XRP cryptocurrency (Kansas), even the Palmetto State Armory (The Citadel). And while the NCAA approved on-field commercial logos for the 2024 season, the volume is picking up. Progressive insurance recently struck a deal to have its logo on the playing field of 13 different schools, including Oregon, Ole Miss, Texas Tech, Georgia, USC and Colorado. Two newcomersSacramento State and North Dakota State are the latest additions to the Bowl Subdivision, bumping its membership to 138 teams. The moves became official on July 1, with Sacramento State being the newest MAC member, and North Dakota State’s juggernaut FCS program joining the Mountain West. Both teams will be eligible for bowl games immediately if they finish with at least six wins and can help fill one of their conference’s bowl slots.Plenty of new coachesOf the 138 FBS teams, 34 have new coaches. The SEC led the way with six new coaches, and the American has five. The Big 12 and Big Ten each added four coaches. Three new coaches were added to the MAC, the ACC, the Sun Belt and the reconstructed Pac-12. The Mountain West, Conference USA and FBS independent UConn each hired a new coach. Some major hires include former Penn State coach James Franklin, who was picked up by Virginia Tech after being fired midseason. Penn State hired Iowa State’s Matt Campbell as Franklin’s successor. Lane Kiffin left Ole Miss for LSU before the Rebels’ playoff run, and Ole Miss promoted Pete Golding from within. Oregon’s defensive and offensive coordinators left the Ducks (Tosh Lupoi headed to Cal and Will Stein to Kentucky). ___Sign up for Top 25 poll alerts here. NCAA agrees to deal to promote championship events and could lead to NIL money for athletes
Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman shakes hands with his players as they come off the field after scoring a touchdown against Arkansas during an NCAA college football game Sept. 27, 2025, in Fayetteville, Ark. (AP Photo/Michael Woods, File)2026-08-20T15:09:16Z INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The NCAA and Playfly Sports have agreed to a deal that will open the door to more marketing opportunities around championship events, including possible NIL deals for student-athletes.The deal announced on Thursday calls on Playfly to hire a staff that will work closely with NCAA officials to sell sponsorship packages to local businesses and organizations that help promote championship events and could lead to athletes being paid for commercial endorsements. Playfly is the sports industry’s leading revenue maximization company. The new revenue will be used to cover the expenses of NCAA tournaments and personnel, and additional money would be used to enhance the student-athlete experience or be sent back to the member schools.“We worked with the Playfly team on asset valuation in 2024 and were impressed by their dedication and results,” NCAA President Charlie Baker said in a statement. “Playfly’s network of resources and relationships will provide benefits that could positively impact every school across our organization, provide added visibility to NCAA programs, and make us better and stronger amid the evolving landscape of college athletics.” The NCAA already has a Corporate Champions and Partners Program, which features sponsors for all of the organization’s national championships. It is managed by CBS Sports and TNT Sports. But this new venture will rely solely on finding local sponsors near the NCAA tourneys. An amendment to the TV contract following the expansion of the men’s tournament to 76 teams made it possible for the NCAA to expand its efforts to generate more money from its biggest events. “The NCAA is simultaneously entrenched with colleges on the local and national level, providing a unique opportunity to drive new sources of income,” said Christy Hedgpeth, president of Playfly Sports Properties. “As they seek to move the organization toward a stronger focus on revenue generation, there is no better team to support their growth than Playfly.” Read More ___Men’s basketball: Sign up for Top 25 poll alerts here, visit the Top 25 here and see AP’s full men’s basketball coverage here

Andruw Monasterio Comments On Potential Playing Time Dip As Trevor Story, IKF Get Healthy
Boston Red Sox shortstop Andruw MonasterioIt's hard to imagine Chad Tracy taking Andruw Monasterio out of the lineup at this point, but the Boston Red Sox may be headed in that direction.Trevor Story, the team's Opening Day shortstop, is on a rehab assignment and nearing a return. When he comes back, it will not be hard for Monasterio to slide over to second base and stay in the lineup. However, Isiah Kiner-Falefa is also on his way back, and getting Monasterio adequate at-bats will be difficult.Since July 1, he has the third-best OPS on the team. He essentially took over as the everyday shortstop on July 22, and since then he is slashing .298/.358/.404 with 20 RBI and eight extra-base hits. He has earned his playing time, but knows his role on the team is about to change.“I know what my role is,” Monasterio said, per The Boston Globe's Tim Healey. “At the beginning of the season, I played DH, first base, second base — I don’t have any issues with that. I know what my role is.Looking for the perfect gift for a baseball player in your life? Check out our brand new baseball lifestyle brand!“And in spring training, (Story) was the shortstop of the team, so I don’t want to be mad or I don’t want to be upset if they make that decision. They are the front office, they are the coaches, they make the decision. They pay me to play, I play whatever they want.”Monasterio's versatility does create more ways for Tracy to get him in the lineup. Tracy has already noted that Monasterio will keep earning starts, as he should."He’ll still play,” Tracy said on Tuesday, per MassLive's Chris Cotillo. “It’s hard to deny. He’ll play second. You saw the early part of the season where Mona was playing third, second and a little bit of short if he needed to. The way he’s swung the bat against both left and right, you can’t deny that or ignore it. You have to keep that involved. These are all things with when we get to the point where we start getting guys back.”Monasterio could play as a designated hitter more often with Masataka Yoshida injured. However, when Roman Anthony comes back, the team may want to use the DH spot to keep Jarren Duran in the mix, even though he has not really earned it.The point is, in the short-term, Monasterio will find ways to get at-bats, and if Story hits like he did before he got hurt, it won't be long before he takes his at-bats. However, when Curtis Mead is ready to return, Monasterio may be relegated to a bench role.More MLB: Aaron Judge Takes Major Step As He Eyes Yankees Return

Hornets new acquisitions bring over 260 games of playoff experience
After falling just one game short of the postseason last year, the Charlotte Hornets still hold the longest current playoff drought in the NBA, which spans back to the 2015-16 season. However, in four offseason trades, the Hornets added plenty of playoff experience.Between the trio of Pat Connaughton, Grant Williams and Coby White, they've combined for 152 games of playoff experience. That said, four of their main additions have an abundance of playoff minutes as well. Charlotte's most recent addition, Dennis Schroder, has appeared in 91 career playoff games. Veteran wing Royce O'Neale has played in 52 playoff games. Naz Reid has played in 48 playoff contests while Grayson Allen has suited up in 28. Lastly, 3-and-D wing Dorian Finney-Smith has played in 44 postseason matchups as well. Not only will this added experience aid the Hornets in pursuit of the postseason, but these veterans will also be able to mentor Charlotte's young core headlined by Brandon Miller and Kon Knueppel that has yet to reach the playoffs. For more NBA content, check out the BasketBaltes podcast: https://www.youtube.com/@BasketBalteshttps://www.instagram.com/basketbaltes/This article originally appeared on Rookie Wire: Hornets new acquisitions bring over 260 games of playoff experience

30 Day Countdown, Day 15: Breakout Defensive Player
INGLEWOOD, CALIFORNIA - DECEMBER 13: Linebacker Zaydrius Rainey-Sale #23 of the Washington Huskies looks into the backfield during the Bucked Up LA Bowl against the Boise State Broncos at SoFi Stadium on December 13, 2025 in Inglewood, California. (Photo by Kevin Terrell/Getty Images) | Getty Images DC Ryan Walter’s Husky defense enters year three of the Jedd Fisch rebuild with a unit that looks stacked with proven veterans on paper, such as LB Jacob Manu, LB Xe’ree Alexander, S Alex McLaughlin, and transfer CB Manny Karnley. However, there are handful of younger and previously injured players who have turned heads this fall camp, and many of them will be stepping into bigger roles the Big Ten. Here are five defenders worth watching closely for a potential breakout season this year. Before getting into it, it’s worth defining what “breakout” actually means for this list. For the true freshmen, that bar is Freshman All-American. For everyone else, it’s earning first- or second-team All-Big Ten honors. To the list!LB Zaydrius Raney-SaleRainey-Sale arrived on campus as one of the more talented linebacker recruits in recent Husky history, but a torn ACL derailed his momentum from his freshman season. Now healthy again, he’s pushing for the starting job next to Jacob Manu, and his physical tools at 6-2 and 240 pounds make that an enticing pairing. If he can stay on the field, Rainey-Sale has the kind of, speed, range and instincts that could make Washington’s linebacker corps one of the best in the country. His ability to rush the passer and drop into coverage make him a valuable asset.S Rylon Dillard-AllenDillard-Allen started three games as a true freshman last season, so he’s already established himself somewhat within the program. What he showed was a player who was physical, confident, and unafraid of contact, which earned him the nickname “Batman.” Dillard-Allen is another highly rated recruit looking to become a full time starter in his second season, but his fly-around-the-field physical playing style has seen him crossing the line into foul territory a few too many times during fall camp. As reported by many close to the program, safeties coach Taylor Mays continues to work with him on playing up to the line, with discipline.DL Derek Coleman-Brusa / Ramzak Fruean A year behind Dillar-Allen and Rainey-Sale is the true freshmen duo of Coleman-Brusa and Fruean. These two true freshmen represent the kind of immediate talent infusion up front that many programs hope for. Colman-Brusa was basically handed a starting defensive tackle job once he arrived on campus and he profiles as a disruptive, versatile player who can win from multiple alignments up front. Fruean, meanwhile, has been in the mix pushing for reps as an edge rusher, with his length and speed. Washington doesn’t have a clear number one guy at edge rusher so there’s a big opportunity for Fruean to really establish himself. Between the two of them, there will be plenty of snaps to go around.CB Dylan RobinsonRobinson started five games as a freshman, and the belief in his ceiling is not hidden around the program, with coaches talking about him as an eventual first-round pick. That kind of praise raises expectations fast, and Robinson will get the chance to prove it in a starters role opposite Arizona transfer Manny Karnley. He has rare tools and the look of an NFL player at 6-3 with speed and fluidity to stick with athletic receivers. If his coverage skills catch up to his physical tools, he could be the breakout name people are talking about.DB Rashawn ClarkClark is another second year defender who’s started games in his short career. This time, as a redshirt freshman in 2025 before shoulder surgery ended his season, and now he’s working his way back into the nickel role he got a lot of reps at. His return from injury is one of the quieter but more meaningful storylines on this defense heading into the fall. He’s a ball hawk and playmaker at the position, with 21 tackles and two tackles for loss in his 387 snaps.Who do you think will be the Huskies breakout defensive star?

Fernando Mendoza opens Raiders vs Texans with pick six
Fernando Mendoza got the start for the Raiders along with the most of the Raiders' second team offense. And it was not a good start to that...start. On his fifth play of the game, Mendoza threw a short dump pass over the middle and had it picked clean by Wade Woodaz and returned 80 yards for a touchdown.TEXANS PICK-6 ALERT 🚨LVvsHOU on ESPNStream on @NFLPluspic.twitter.com/li2QM4hEah— NFL (@NFL) August 21, 2026It is possible the mistake was made by running back Mike Washington who began to move after the pass was thrown, leaving Woodaz was in perfect position to catch it and was gone for the score. The defensive score came on the heels of the Texans offense driving down the field for an opening drive touchdown, making it a 14-0 game. The pick six was not dissimilar to joint practices with the Texans on Tuesday where Mendoza also threw a pick six.None new for 5️⃣ pic.twitter.com/pqbT825MWD— Houston Texans (@HoustonTexans) August 18, 2026That one coming after some good work prior to that. Rory McIlroy makes quick turnaround for 5-way share of lead at BMW as ailing Scheffler fades
ST. LOUIS — Rory McIlroy might not be as far away as he thought four days ago, playing bogey-free at Bellerive for a 6-under 64 that gave him a share of the lead Thursday in the BMW Championship with three other U.S. Open champions and Chris Gotterup.Four days brought a big change for Scottie Scheffler, too. The world’s No. 1 player went from an eight-shot victory in the postseason opener to feeling under the weather and having to rally for a 72, his highest opening round since the U.S. Open in June.Scheffler’s voice was hoarse when he said he didn’t want to stop to talk, saying only that he was sick as he headed for the locker room.McIlroy returned from a four-week break after the British Open with plenty of rust and very little golf and failed to break par in any of the four rounds for the first time in more than five years at the FedEx St. Jude Championship.“I went home and I worked on a few things and at least got myself back in a frame of mind where like I felt like I’m at least back on the right path of what I’m doing with my game and with my swing,” McIlroy said. “It’s certainly a work in progress. Days like this are encouraging, obviously. There’s still a lot of work to be done.”McIlroy is fond of saying players never remember what it’s like to play bad when they’re going well and they think they’ll never play good again when the game is going poorly. It’s never that far away, and Thursday was a reminder of that.Bellerive originally was designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. and later updated by his son, Rees, who had the reputation as the “Open Doctor” for trying to modernize and toughen courses. While soft conditions contributed to a bunched leaderboard, it was hard to look past so many U.S. Open champions at the top.Gary Woodland, a Kansas native getting plenty of support in Missouri as he continues to recover from brain surgery and make it to the FedEx Cup finale, holed out for eagle on the 11th fairway and didn’t miss a green until the 18th, his lone bogey. He won the U.S. Open in 2019 at Pebble Beach.Wyndham Clark, who birdied five of his last six holes, is a two-time U.S. Open champion, including this year at Shinnecock Hills. J.J. Spaun went back to the putter he used when he won the U.S. Open at Oakmont two years ago and had seven birdies until a bogey on the final hole.Among those a shot behind was 2022 U.S. Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick.“Coincidence,” Clark said about five of seven U.S. Open champions at 65 or better.Woodland is the only one at 64 who really needed a start like this. The triple-digit heat last week in Memphis, Tennessee, made it difficult for him to slow his heart rate, which is key for him to his brain from being overly engaged. He is at No. 31 in the FedEx Cup — only the top 30 reach the Tour Championship next week in Atlanta, which would guarantee him starts in all four majors next year, along with giving him a chance to play for the FedEx Cup and its $10 million prize.“I can promise you East Lake wasn’t on my mind to start the year,” Woodland said. “It’s a goal, I think you write it down, but it seemed like far, far away. I’ve had up-and-down days. I’ve had some rough days lately. But we’ve built this together, Randy (Smith) and I, to get to a point where I feel very comfortable over the golf ball.“If I can find a way to get through 18 holes mentally, my game’s in a pretty good spot where I can compete out here at a level I haven’t been able to compete in a while.”Woodland kept the excitement down when the crowd erupted in cheers to see his sand wedge from 99 yards spin back and roll into the cup for eagle on the 11th hole. He smiled and raised his arm and gave high-fives to Adam Scott and the caddies. Most impressive was his 2-iron from 286 yards on the par-5 17th that rolled out to 12 feet on the fringe. He narrowly missed that and settle for birdie.Woodland occasionally places his hand on the left side of his chest before putting. It looked like a reminder to keep his shoulders in place. Turns out it has a much deeper purpose.“When I’m struggling I put my hand on my heart to just to remind myself that I’m alive, and if I can feel my heart beat I know I’m breathing,” he said. “And I’ve done that this year just to try to slow my heart down, tell myself I’m safe and I’ll be all right.”

Texas barbecue is getting a halal makeover
Zain Shafi prepares to put briskets in the smoker at Goldee's BBQ, Saturday, June 27, 2026, in Fort Worth, Texas. (Fiona André/Religion News Service via AP)2026-08-21T00:36:44Z FORT WORTH, Texas (RNS) — At 9 a.m. on a scorching Saturday in June, nearly 100 people were already lined up outside Goldee’s BBQ, a small, wooden-shack restaurant.First in line was 30-year-old Thanh Huynh, who had been sitting in a lawn chair on the joint’s rustic porch since 6:30 a.m.“I have, like, a whole list, and I’m going to spend lots of money here. It’ll be worth it,” he said, laughing while rattling off a long order of meats and sides from his phone’s Notes app as a sweet, smoky scent from nearby pits hung in the air.Opened in 2020 by a group of his friends, the restaurant was named the No. 1 barbecue spot in the state by Texas Monthly a year later, and then won a Bib Gourmand award from the prestigious Michelin Guide, given for “great food at a great value.”The restaurant serves classic Texas barbecue like craft pork belly, sausage and ribs. But it also offers halal brisket, turkey and lamb — meat raised and butchered in accordance with Islamic guidelines. ___This content is written and produced by Religion News Service and distributed by The Associated Press. RNS and AP partner on some religion news content. RNS is solely responsible for this story. ___ At a time when Republican leaders are increasingly targeting the state’s growing Muslim communities, halal barbecue joints like Goldee’s are thriving in Texas. Across the state, Muslim pitmasters are gaining recognition for putting their own spin on one of Texas’ most iconic culinary traditions. At least a dozen barbecue spots now serve halal meats, including Yearby’s Barbecue & Waterice, run by Black Muslim couple CJ and Sabrina Henley, soon-to-be in Plano, and Levant Mediterranean BBQ, a restaurant with locations in Houston and Frisco and whose all-beef menu includes a brisket shawarma sandwich. Read More “Now there are so many options, and for us to have highly rated barbecue, it’s a blessing,” said Haris Ghaffar, who drove an hour from Celina and stood in 90-degree weather for nearly two hours with a friend for the halal options at Goldee’s.Growing up in the 1990s, Ghaffar said a McDonald’s Filet-O-Fish sandwich was one of the few halal meals he could eat while dining out. Back then, halal food was seen as serving a small community. Today, it’s a multibillion-dollar industry that’s part of the American culinary mainstream, said James Beard Award‑winning food writer Farhan Mustafa, who wrote about the rise of American halal barbecue for Bon Appétit magazine in 2025. “Halal food is American food,” said Mustafa, who is based in Seattle. “It belongs on your plate. It belongs in the casual chat. It belongs in hip hop tracks. It’s the most American thing there is.”Mustafa said Muslims are part of a growing list of communities putting their stamp on Texas barbecue. “Whether they’re first, second or third-generation Muslims or Muslim Americans or just Americans, they’re bringing what they know and what excites them,” he said.Texas barbecue is typically defined by salt-and-pepper brisket and pork ribs, but this new crop of halal pitmasters are adding inventive twists, often based on their own family heritages.Zain Shafi, a pitmaster and co-owner of Goldee’s, previously ran Sabar Barbecue, a food truck that offered Pakistani-infused halal dishes, such as brisket with rub that included spices like bay leaf and coriander. He brought tandoori smoked turkey to Goldee’s menu. And sourcing halal cuts, he said, was a natural choice because they are “the highest quality” meats. Goldee’s chef and part owner Nupohn Inthanousay also blends his Laotian heritage, serving a smoked Lao “sai oua” sausage with sticky rice and a fiery, tangy dipping sauce. At Kafi BBQ in Irving, owner Salahodeen Abdul-Kafi brings halal Wagyu beef and Iraqi spices to classic Texas barbecue, challenging what he said is the “traditional old guard of Texas barbecue.”“My goal at Kafi BBQ is to make the best barbecue in Texas,” Abdul-Kafi said. “I have not been shy about that at all, and making the best barbecue in Texas does not necessarily have to include pork.”A former Silicon Valley tech worker, he moved to Texas six years ago in search of a Muslim community. On weekends in his backyard, he smoked brisket for friends. By 2024, he bought a smoker and opened Kafi BBQ. He said he spent months testing and perfecting recipes and finding local producers. Abdul-Kafi attributes his obsession with crafting a stand-out menu to the Islamic concept of “Ihsan”— an Arabic term meaning doing something with excellence for the sake of God.On a Sunday afternoon this summer, the restaurant’s red booths were packed with diners, drawn to menu items like the 13-spice Wagyu brisket, pomegranate-glazed beef belly burnt ends and Iraqi-inspired spicy beef sausage.“That sausage, I’d probably put it at the top sausage I’ve ever had, and we eat barbecue a lot. This place is unique,” said Jonathan Tate, a Fort Worth resident who came to Kafi BBQ with a friend after reading about it on a Facebook foodie group.“I don’t necessarily have to have it halal, but it’s nice to know they took good care of the food, the meat,” his friend Jon Sklar said, before going back in line to order oxtail. Although political rhetoric against Muslims in Texas has become increasingly hostile — some GOP lawmakers even discussed a ban on halal food at a conference this month — pitmasters like Abdul-Kafi see the rise of halal barbecue as an effective counterargument.“It’s an example of exactly the opposite of what the Islamophobes talk about, right?” he said. “They say, ‘oh, Muslims don’t integrate, they stay alone, they don’t help society and all this stuff.’ And it’s like, I’m sitting here contributing to the most well-known cuisine of Texas.”One of the diners at Kafi BBQ, Houston native Muhammad Sohail, 23, said the restaurant reflects who he is — a proud Texan and Muslim. “This place is super important because I can see halal within the culture of Texas, which is my culture at this point,” Sohail said. “We love the food. We love meat. We’re Muslims and we love barbecue.”After finishing a big lunch with 10 relatives, Areeba Ali, a Dallas native of Indian heritage, said the restaurant’s appeal cuts across communities, which she said is evidence that halal barbecue isn’t a niche but resonates broadly with Texans. “If you look around in the restaurant, you see everybody in there — it’s not just one demographic in there,” Ali said. For Mustafa, that success is ultimately a testament to the resilience of Muslim American communities.“No matter how much they try to erase us, our food is here to stay,” he said. “You will see the power of just good food and the fact that most people really seem to understand that this is just as American as anything else.”___Fiona André contributed to this report.

US Treasury sanctions Ecuador-to-US cocaine trafficking network
Police conduct an operation searching for weapons and or drugs as part of an effort to combat criminal groups, in the Nueva Guayaquil neighborhood of Guayaquil, Ecuador, April 4, 2024. (AP Photo/Cesar Munoz, File)2026-08-21T00:29:18Z QUITO, Ecuador (AP) — The U.S. Treasury on Thursday sanctioned 15 people for their involvement in a network that allegedly shipped thousands of kilograms of cocaine per month from Ecuador through Mexico, destined for the United States. The announcement comes as the U.S. has ramped up attacks against fishermen in the Caribbean and the Pacific, killing more than 200, as part of the Trump administration’s push to expand joint anti-drug trafficking operations in Latin America. “Operating under the guise of legitimate fishing businesses, a fleet of Ecuador-based vessels near Manta, Ecuador, secretly transfers cocaine to small power boats — known as go-fast vessels — that transit north through the Eastern Pacific Ocean (EPAC), en route to the United States,” the Treasury Department said. The members targeted are allegedly part of Los Choneros and Los Lobos, two Ecuadorean gangs previously designated by the U.S. as foreign terrorist organizations. The drugs are then smuggled through Mexico to the U.S. by the Sinaloa Cartel and Cartel de Jalisco Nueva Generacion (CJNG), also designated FTOs. Ecuador has struggled to contain drug violence since 2021 as rival cartels partner with local gangs and battle for control of routes and coastal ports used to smuggle cocaine. The country is wedged between Colombia and Peru, the world’s top cocaine producing countries.Last year, Ecuador recorded its highest homicide rate in decades of 50 murders per every 100,000 residents, according to the Ministry of the Interior. The country under President Daniel Noboa has become a strong partner of U.S. President Donald Trump in counter-narcotics operation in the region. Read More Two U.S. warships with interceptor boats and helicopters will patrol Ecuador’s territorial waters to support the fight against drug trafficking, Ecuadorean Defense Minister Gian Carlo Loffredo announced Thursday. The announcement was made on his Instagram account after a meeting the previous day in the port city of Manta with Gen. Francis Donovan, head of U.S. Southern Command. He did not specify when the patrols would begin. Loffredo noted that “this means we will triple our interdiction capabilities in the maritime zone” and added that “three Black Hawk helicopters are in Manta and will be conducting operations.” Sign up for Morning Wire: Our flagship newsletter breaks down the biggest headlines of the day. Red Sox Fans Will Love What Andruw Monasterio Said About Potentially Losing Playing Time
Boston Red Sox shortstop Andruw MonasterioAndruw Monasterio has been a great hitter for the Boston Red Sox as of late, but Trevor Story and Isiah Kiner-Falefa's returns could cost him some at-bats.Chad Tracy has already said that Monasterio will continue to play, noting that he has earned the right to stay in the lineup. He will play second base with Story back. Assuming Story plays like he did last year, he will be the everyday shortstop, but if his struggles continue, Monasterio should start getting some of his at-bats, and Kiner-Falefa should get some more playing time as well. With Roman Anthony returning as well, the problem for Monasterio will be later. When Curtis Mead is back as well, it will be tough to get Monasterio in at shortstop, second base or designated hitter."I have to be proud of myself,” Monasterio said. “I feel like maybe — I want to say maybe — maybe I did better than what they expected, so I feel proud of myself about that. When (Story) comes back, (Kiner-)Falefa comes back, and (Curtis) Mead comes back, whatever they want. I’m a team player and I want to win a ring. That’s all that matters.”Looking for the perfect gift for a baseball player in your life? Check out our brand new baseball lifestyle brand! When the Red Sox acquired Caleb Durbin, Monasterio was a throw-in. He was expected to be nothing more than a bench player or utility bat. However, he has turned into a key player for their offense.Despite feeling like he has done enough to play every day, he trusts the coaches to make the right decisions and has a good attitude. He is willing to do whatever it takes to win a World Series.More MLB: Blue Jays Drop Andrés Giménez Hamstring Injury Update After Win

Bengals QB Joe Burrow 'trying to manifest' Super Bowl win this season: 'I'm tired of saying next year'
After years of disappointment, Joe Burrow has his sights set on one thing: finally getting the Cincinnati Bengals their long-awaited championship.“I’m trying to put it out into the world, I’m trying to manifest it, I’m trying to show our guys the urgency that I have and that I want us to have as an organization to go and make it happen,” Burrow said in a press conference on Thursday. The Bengals starting quarterback, whose Super Bowl dreams have been dashed by injuries, poor records and close postseason losses, shared his naked ambition to not wait any longer to make it happen.Burrow said. “You can keep pushing it down the road, or you can talk about it now and say this is the year.“You know, I’m tired of saying, ‘Next year, next year, next year.’ This is it,” he continued. “Life is too short to keep pushing things down the road, and I’m trying to instill some urgency and some intensity in everybody to go and be great every day and try to go make it happen.”When asked if the Bengals chance to win a championship was “now or never,” Burrow concurred.“That’s how I’m treating it, for sure,” Burrow said.Burrow is under contract with Cincinnati through 2029 after signing a five-year, $275 million extension with the team in 2023. He and the Bengals reportedly agreed to a restructured deal in June to free up $10 million in cap space.Cincinnati is one of 12 NFL teams that has never won the Super Bowl, despite three appearances in the final.Burrow’s determination is notable given the stops and starts that have dictated his career, which the 29-year-old has spent exclusively with the Bengals. A series of unfortunate injuries have also led to resurgent seasons, including two Comeback Player of the Year awards (2021 and 2024).After Burrow’s rookie year in 2020 was cut short by a brutal ACL and MCL tear, he led Cincinnati to the Super Bowl in his next season, before they fell to the Los Angeles Rams in a three-point loss. Even with the close call, it was the first time in six years that the Bengals had made the postseason, and the first time since 1988 that Cincinnati had won the AFC. In 2023, Burrow underwent another season-ending surgery midway through the year, this time with a ligament in his right wrist; the next year, he led the league in passing yards and passing touchdowns.Burrow missed nearly three months last season after undergoing another surgery for turf toe, before returning to the team just before Thanksgiving. However, Cincinnati had gone 1-8 in his absence, making the season unsalvageable for the QB1.That’s been the biggest trend throughout Burrow’s tenure: The Bengals simply aren’t able to play well without him under center. His hunger for a championship, then, is very dependent on him staying healthy.

    What's wrong with Christian McCaffrey?
As the San Francisco 49ers gear up for another preseason game with the Los Angeles Chargers on Thursday night, they undoubtedly have bigger fish to fry. First and foremost at the moment is the ongoing status of superstar running back Christian McCaffrey. The tailback is currently dealing with undisclosed tightness and has missed a week of practice and running heading into Thursday night's exhibition, where he will obviously not play. Head coach Kyle Shanahan had to clarify that McCaffrey's status has nothing to do with dissatisfaction with his current contract, especially after recent monster extensions for Bijan Robinson and Jahmyr Gibbs. So, what's the deal? When might McCaffrey actually come back to the 49ers?For what it's worth, a return seems imminent. Why do I say that? Shanahan maintained that McCaffrey likely would've already practiced earlier this week if the 49ers weren't engaging in joint practices with the Chargers. But because those joint practices with other teams are so physical, the 49ers elected to remain cautious rather than unnecessarily push their arguably best player. 49ers HC Kyle Shanahan said RB Christian McCaffrey, who has missed some time due to muscle tightness, would have practiced Tuesday if it weren’t a joint practice vs. the Chargers. 49ers also have no reason to believe that McCaffrey’s missed practice time is contract related. pic.twitter.com/iqCQmiLAqf— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) August 18, 2026That timeline seems promising! After playing in just four games in 2024, McCaffrey came back and played in all 17 games last season for the 49ers. San Francisco is undoubtedly hoping his 2026 output resembles his 2025, not his disappointing 2024. Who is Christian McCaffrey's backup on the 49ers?Kaelon Black is currently listed as McCaffrey's backup on the 49ers' depth chart at the time of this writing. Black is a rookie who was drafted out of Indiana in the third round of the 2026 NFL Draft. This article originally appeared on For The Win: What's wrong with Christian McCaffrey?

NBC’s Jamal Crawford reveals he turned down 3 NBA coaching opportunities this summer
Credit: Kirby Lee-Imagn ImagesJust one year into working on the top NBA broadcast booth at NBC Sports, Jamal Crawford is already fielding interest from coaching staffs around the league. The former star sixth man rose quickly in broadcasting after retiring from the NBA after the 2020 season, first at TNT Sports and then with NBC. Yet as he told the Cousins podcast, hosted by his NBC colleagues Vince Carter and Tracy McGrady, this week, Crawford sees himself much more as a coach than a game analyst. And if NBA executives get their way, Crawford will make that transition sooner than later.“I 1,000 percent know I’m going to be an NBA coach one day,” he said. “I literally turned down three NBA jobs this summer.”.@JCrossover already knows what’s next.“I 1000% know I’m going to be an NBA coach.” pic.twitter.com/0Wanbd3Tyz— Cousins with Vince Carter & Tracy McGrady (@VinceAndTmac) August 18, 2026Crawford revealed that one of the three offers he received was to interview for a team’s head-coaching vacancy, while the other two likely would have been offers to immediately join a staff as an assistant. The former Los Angeles Clippers and New York Knicks fan favorite is well-liked across the NBA and became a vocal mentor for younger players later in his career. Crawford said that in three years when his son, JJ, finishes high school, he fully expects to begin his coaching career.“I never thought I could feel alive again after playing, and that was part of the reason I was so scared to put it down,” he explained. “Coaching does that for me. Because I love learning, and it’s like it challenges your mind in real time.”As an analyst, Crawford stands out for his concise and relatable commentary. Those same qualities clearly stand out to NBA decision-makers.Networks have had a rough time retaining top broadcasters in recent years. At ESPN, both JJ Redick and Doc Rivers left the top booth to coach teams. Stan Van Gundy and Mark Jackson did the same years earlier. The same pattern played out at TNT, where Steve Kerr once left a top broadcasting job to lead the Golden State Warriors dynasty. The stability and pay for the top jobs at a network, which Jeff Van Gundy and Reggie Miller occupied for years under the NBA’s last national television setup, are clearly still appealing. But nobody below that perch has yet turned down a coaching offer, and Crawford seems to be the next in line. The post NBC’s Jamal Crawford reveals he turned down 3 NBA coaching opportunities this summer appeared first on Awful Announcing.

Moms for Liberty co-founder who had bi threesome rape scandal to lose school board seat
Control of Florida’s Sarasota County Schools Board will flip to a Democratic majority following recent election wins and the fact that Moms for Liberty co-founder Bridget Ziegler — who was implicated in a 2023 rape scandal alleged by the woman she and her husband had threesomes with — will step down from the board on November 17, 2026, when her final term ends. She did not run for re-election. Ziegler was first elected to the board in 2014 with the support of anti-LGBTQ+ Gov. Ron DeSantis (R). She co-founded Moms for Liberty, a so-called parents’ rights group that has been designated as an anti-LGBTQ+ extremist group by the Southern Poverty Law Center. Related Bridget Ziegler’s gay colleague isn’t afraid of her. He uses her hate as fuel to make change. During Ziegler’s tenure, the board voted last year to remove references to race, sexuality and disability from its anti-bullying rules. It also pledged to support U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to help deport undocumented students in county schools. In May 2024, she and the board’s conservative majority voted to reject new federal protections for LGBTQ+ students. Two Democratic-backed candidates beat out conservatives in last Tuesday’s school board elections, with candidates Megan Tennimon and Beth Mayberry winning their races. A third Democratic-backed candidate, Jimmy Glover, won the most votes against his two Republican-backed opponents, but because he didn’t win more than 50% of the votes, he’ll compete again in a runoff election this November. If he wins, the entire school board will be Democratically-backed. Insights for the LGBTQ+ community Subscribe to our briefing for insights into how politics impacts the LGBTQ+ community and more. Subscribe to our Newsletter today “I really think at the end of the day, regardless of political affiliation, our community was just tired of the culture wars, the political theater and being the center of national attention for all the wrong reasons,” Tennimon told The Washington Post. Mayberry added, “I think that [vpters] realized how destructive those divisive policies really were. What they’ve seen in the last four years, with basically the tabloid happenings on the school board and a lot of the policies and resolutions that were being made, our general community did not agree with.” In late 2023, Ziegler admitted to having bisexual threesomes with her husband, who was chairman of the state Republican party at the time, and a woman who later accused him of rape in Ziegler’s absence. Police eventually cleared her husband of the rape charges. However, Ziegler was widely criticized for hpocrisy since the organization she co-founded, Moms for Liberty, opposes LGBTQ+ content and inclusive policies in public schools. She later lost her position at the conservative Leadership Institute, and her husband was voted out of his Republican party chairmanship. Following the scandal, students, parents, and community members called for Ziegler to resign from the school board. One local youth activist, Zander Moricz, told her during a board meeting, “You deserve to be fired from your job because you are terrible at your job, not because you had sex with a woman.” “[You] change our district lines for political gain, remove books from schools, target trans and queer children, erase Black history, and elevate your political career – all while sending your children to private schools because you don’t believe in the public school system that you’ve been leading,” Moricz added. Orioles swept by Yankees, fall six games below .500
BALTIMORE, MD - AUGUST 20: Orioles left fielder Dylan Beavers (12) crashes into the left field padded wall but can't make a catch in foul territory during the New York Yankees versus Baltimore Orioles Major League Baseball (MLB) game on August 20, 2026 at Orioles Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore, MD. (Photo by Randy Litzinger/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images) | Icon Sportswire via Getty Images The Orioles were swept away tonight, ruining every bit of goodwill and excitement they had built up with their series against the Rays last weekend. Tonight’s game, a 6-1 loss to the Yankees, had a little bit of everything bad. The offense could not solve Gerrit Cole. One big error cost the team a couple runs. And Kyle Bradish struggled for his second straight start. It was not an uplifting game, to say the least. Let’s start with Bradish. He faced just three batters in the first inning, but there was foreshadowing for the rest of his game. He walked leadoff batter Trent Grisham on six pitches. To make matters worse, Carlos Narváez challenged ball four and lost. On the first batter of the game. Bradish then went 3-2 to Ben Rice, but Rice bailed him out by swinging at ball four and popping out. Heliot Ramos grounded into the first of three Yankees double plays to end the inning. The third inning was the worst one for Bradish, with an assist to Gunnar Henderson. Back-to-back singles put runners on the corners with no outs. José Caballero hit a groundball to Jackson Holliday, who fired to Henderson to start the double play, but Henderson missed the catch. No outs were recorded and a run scored. The next batter did hit into a double play, but Bradish couldn’t close out the inning. Three batters and three hits later, the Orioles were down 3-0. Bradish allowed two more baserunners in the fifth inning but was once again saved by a double play ball. He ended the fifth inning with 89 pitches. After his struggles, I thought that might be the end of his night. Unfortunately for him, he went back out for the sixth. He faced four batters and retired two of them. The other two hit home runs. Whoops! He was pulled after the second one. His final pitching line: 5.2 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 5 K. Henderson’s error led to the unearned runs, but Bradish did allow three more hits in the inning after that play. Not great. The way that the Orioles’ offense played, Bradish could have been a lot better and it wouldn’t have mattered. They looked like they might have something cooking in the first inning with Pete Alonso singled and Gunnar Henderson walked, but they were stranded. In fact, starting with Samuel Basallo’s strikeout that followed the Henderson walk, Cole retired 11 Orioles in a row. It was not fun. That took him through the end of the fourth inning. Dylan Beavers came up first in the fifth inning and ended the hit drought in style. He took a 97 mph fastball up and into the flag court. It got the Orioles on the board, at the time cutting the lead to 3-1. Cole retired the next three. The seventh inning was Cole’s last and he ended his outing almost exactly like he started it. After a Holliday strikeout, Alonso and Henderson reached base. Basallo struck out again, and Christian Encarnacion-Strand flew out to end the inning. Grant Wolfram replaced Bradish and looked good. He retired all four batters he faced on 17 pitches and struck out two. But Albert Suárez wasn’t quite as good. He allowed a run on three hits in the eighth, but pitched a perfect ninth. Soft-tossing Ryan Yarbrough replaced Cole after six innings, and the Orioles could do nothing with him. They went nine-up, nine-down against him to close out the game. Yarbrough picked up the rare three-inning save for his efforts. Orioles lose, 6-1. It’s their fourth loss in a row. Tomorrow they being a three-game series with the Rays. They have proven they can beat the Rays this year, so I’d like to sign up for a couple or three wins.

49ers TE George Kittle received encouraging news from Dr. Neal ElAttrache
Jan 11, 2026; Philadelphia, PA, USA; San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle (85) looks on during warmups prior to an NFC Wild Card Round game against the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field. Mandatory Credit: Eric Hartline-Imagn Images | Eric Hartline-Imagn Images The San Francisco 49ers received good news before they took the field on Thursday night. ESPN’s Adam Schefter tweeted the following:49ers tight end George Kittle visited Wednesday in Los Angeles with renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. Neal ElAttrache, who performed the surgery on his torn Achilles in January. It was said to be an encouraging visit. Kittle’s recovery is ahead of schedule, and it gives him a legitimate chance to play in the regular season opener in Australia against the Los Angeles Rams.Last Sunday, Kittle said he expects to return sooner than later and didn’t think about the possibility of beginning the season on the PUP list. One of Kittle’s lone concerns about being ready for Week 1 was getting enough practice time and building up his football shape ahead of traveling to Australia. He did not want the game to be his first time in pads. Kittle said you can train all you want, but you have to play football to get into football shape. The 49ers face the Rams exactly three weeks from Thursday night. The 49ers have been practicing about four times a week with two walk-throughs mixed in. But that has also included joint practices and preseason games. If Kittle returns to practice this Saturday, he’ll have about a week of practices to build his cardio. For what it’s worth, when he spoke this past Sunday, Kittle didn’t sound like it would be the end of the world if he missed Week 1. He understands it’s a 17-game season and this is a long, long season.

The rest of the stacked card will also feature several BJJ champs and popular figures like William Tackett, Jalen Fonacier and Danielle Kelly, along with a promising scrap between Vagner Rocha and Andy Varela.Outside of the stacked card, UFC BJJ 10 will also debut a smaller bowl, with steeper walls, which grapplers will now have to adjust to. It’ll be interesting to see if a smaller surface can push more action, while still preventing all those resets that are far too common in traditional jiu-jitsu mats. Jury says The New York Times defamed Alabama basketball player with incorrect story about shooting

(AP) — An Alabama jury on Thursday awarded $9.25 million in damages after finding that The New York Times defamed a college basketball player by incorrectly reporting that he was at the scene of a fatal shooting in Tuscaloosa. Kai Spears, who played for the University of Alabama men’s team, sued the Times in 2023 after it published a report, citing a person familiar with the investigation, that indicated he was a passenger in a car involved in the shooting. The Times reported that the person had spoken “on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive matters.”Days later, the Times acknowledged its error in an editor’s note and corrected the story. The eight-person jury delivered its verdict after a nine-day trial in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Alabama. Matt Glover, an attorney for Spears, said he was pleased with the decision and believes “this verdict will improve journalism throughout the country.” The Times was reviewing its legal options after losing in court, spokesperson Charlie Stadtlander said.“We’re disappointed the jury found The Times liable for an honest mistake,” Stadtlander said in a statement Thursday. “We thank the jury for its service, but believe the verdict and award of damages are contrary to law and not supported by the evidence.”Three other basketball players from the school were present at the January 2023 shooting, which killed a 23-year-old mother. In the lawsuit, Spears claimed the inaccurate reporting had caused him emotional distress and forever linked him with a murder. A Times article reporting on the verdict Thursday said the newspaper “had not lost a defamation lawsuit brought in the United States over one of its articles in more than 50 years.”

No debating this win: Yankees complete a 3-game sweep with a 6-1 rout of the Orioles
New York Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole throws during the second inning of a baseball game against the Baltimore Orioles, Thursday, Aug. 20, 2026, in Baltimore. (AP Photo/Nick Wass)2026-08-21T01:46:58Z BALTIMORE (AP) — Gerrit Cole pitched six sharp innings, Luis García Jr. and Spencer Jones homered and the New York Yankees completed a three-game sweep in Baltimore with a 6-1 victory over the Orioles on Thursday night.Cole (7-6) allowed four hits and a walk with eight strikeouts. A fifth-inning homer by Dylan Beavers produced the lone Baltimore run. The Yankees pulled within four games of AL East-leading Tampa Bay.Ryan Yarbrough relieved Cole and pitched three perfect innings for his third save. The Orioles have dropped four in a row after briefly taking sole possession of the lead in the race for the final American League wild card. Kyle Bradish (7-12) allowed three earned runs and eight hits in 5 2/3 innings, and Baltimore also permitted a pair of unearned runs in the third. With men on first and third and nobody out that inning, second baseman Jackson Holliday fielded a tough grounder and threw to second, but shortstop Gunnar Henderson dropped the ball for an error and everyone was safe. With a run already in, Bradish induced a double play, but Ben Rice followed with an RBI single and then Heliot Ramos brought in a run with a double that made it 3-0.Beavers’ drive to right made it 3-1, but García and Jones answered with solo shots to chase Bradish in the sixth. Jazz Chisholm Jr. tripled in a run in the eighth. There was no controversy about this New York win, a night after Pete Alonso’s deep fly ball against the Yankees was ruled foul with the game tied. Alonso did single twice Thursday to extend his hitting streak to a career-high 12 games.Cole (1,015) moved one strikeout ahead of Roger Clemens for 12th place on the Yankees’ career list. Federal court is asked to block Kennedy Center from returning Trump’s name to building
The exterior of the Kennedy Center is seen, Friday, July 31, 2026, in Washington. (AP Photo/Mark Schiefelbein)2026-08-21T01:44:10Z WASHINGTON (AP) — Rep. Joyce Beatty made an emergency request on Thursday that a federal court block the Kennedy Center from returning President Donald Trump’s name to the building. The Trump-aligned board at the Kennedy Center voted earlier this month to inscribe the president’s name on the venue’s facade so it would read “The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Restored and Renovated By President Donald J. Trump.” If the Trump Kennedy Center Fund reached $100 million, another inscription would be added reading “Endowed by the Trump Kennedy Center Fund.”The plaza in front of the Kennedy Center would also be renamed to recognize Trump. The Kennedy Center has said it wouldn’t attempt to engrave Trump’s name on the building before Sept. 8 to allow for legal arguments to unfold. Beatty, an Ohio Democrat and ex officio member of the Kennedy Center, has led the effort to prevent Trump from memorializing himself there. In asking for the court’s intervention, her lawyers, Norm Eisen and Nathaniel Zelinsky, wrote that the board’s actions amounted to “clear violations” of an earlier court order. A representative for the Kennedy Center didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. The resolution approved by Trump’s allies on the board said the Kennedy Center “would be in financial ruin without President Trump’s unique stature as both an unparalleled fundraiser and world-class developer.”Congress named the performing arts center as a living memorial to Kennedy in 1964, the year after he was assassinated. The law explicitly prohibits the board of trustees from making the center into a memorial to anyone else, and from putting another person’s name on the building’s exterior. U.S. District Court Judge Christopher Cooper ruled in May that the Kennedy Center illegally added Trump’s name to the building, ordering it removed. The institution’s leaders complied in June but left a tarp and scaffolding in place where Trump’s name once stood. Read More Lawyers for the Kennedy Center wouldn’t commit this week to taking down the scaffolding, saying it’s needed as part of a broader system for “water testing and structural repairs to the roof overhang.” STEVEN SLOAN Sloan is the Washington correspondent at The Associated Press. Report: George Kittle ahead of schedule, has legitimate chance to play Week 1
There is another positive update on 49ers tight end George Kittle, who is recovering from a torn Achilles suffered in January.ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports Kittle visited surgeon Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles on Wednesday, and the result was encouraging. Kittle’s recovery process is considered ahead of schedule, and he now has a legitimate chance to play in the 49ers’ Week 1 matchup against the Rams in Australia.Kittle is currently on the active/physically unable to perform list, so he hasn’t practiced during training camp. But he said within the last week that he’s confident that he will not remain on it to start the regular season, which would keep him out for at least the first four games. The 49ers will have to take Kittle off of the PUP list by Aug. 30 to have him available to start the season.Kittle tore his right Achilles in a Jan. 11 playoff game against the Eagles. He underwent surgery three days later, with ElAttrache, the Rams’ team physician, repairing the tendon.Kittle made his seventh career Pro Bowl last season despite playing only 11 regular-season games due to hamstring and ankle injuries.

Colts haven't decided their No. 2 QB yet
The Colts have not decided who will back up Daniel Jones this season with the competition between Riley Leonard and Anthony Richardson continuing through the rest of the preseason."Yeah, I don’t have a timetable on that," coach Shane Steichen said Thursday, via Nathan Brown of the Indy Star. "I'm going to let that thing play out. Like I said, we've got two more weeks. We've got this preseason game. We've got practice, all that stuff and then we'll see where it goes."The Colts have made it a fair competition between Richardson, a first-round pick in 2023, and Leonard, a sixth-round pick in 2025. On Saturday, Leonard will lead the second-team offense in the first half. Richardson, who started last week, will play with the third team in the second half.Daniel Jones is not expected to play in the preseason, so Leonard and Richardson will get another game to battle for the job."I thought they both had a good camp," Steichen said of Richardson and Leonard. "I mean, there were some ups and downs, but I think you saw flashes of both of them, which was really exciting."

How many baseball series will OKC Thunder play in 2026-27 regular season?
Quenching the thirst of the annual content drought, the NBA has dropped its 2026-27 regular season. The Oklahoma City Thunder now have the next month-plus to completely dissect when and where they'll face their opponents during the seven-month marathon.Entering the 2026-27 season as a co-title favorite, the Thunder are once again an NBA main character. They'll have the fifth-most national TV games with 30. Only the New York Knicks, San Antonio Spurs, Los Angeles Lakers and Philadelphia 76ers have more at 34 apiece.Even with their cost-cutting moves this summer, the Thunder remain arguably the best team. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams are one of the top league trios. With one championship ring in hand, they're looking to add another this upcoming year. One of the recent NBA regular season perks is the baseball series. Gaining popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic, the schedule-makers have had teams face off against each other two times in a row — usually in the same arena. That eases some of the travel load that teams go through.Let's look at all five of OKC's baseball series throughout the 2026-27 regular season:Nov. 2-4: Cleveland CavaliersMonday, Nov. 2: Thunder at Cavaliers, 6 p.m. CT (NBC, Peacock)Wednesday, Nov. 4: Cavaliers at Thunder, 7 p.m. CTNov. 10-11: Portland Trail BlazersTuesday, Nov. 10: Thunder at Trail Blazers, 10 p.m. CT (NBC, Peacock)Wednesday, Nov. 11: Thunder at Trail Blazers, 9 p.m. CTNov. 30-Dec. 2: Brooklyn NetsMonday, Nov. 30: Thunder at Nets, 6:30 p.m. CTWednesday, Dec. 2: Nets at Thunder, 7 p.m. CTMar. 23-24: Phoenix SunsTuesday, Mar. 23: Thunder at Suns, 10 p.m. CT (NBC, Peacock)Wednesday, Mar. 24: Thunder at Suns, 9 p.m. CTApr. 8-9: Golden State WarriorsThursday, Apr. 8: Warriors at Thunder, 8:30 p.m. CT (Amazon Prime)Friday, Apr. 9: Warriors at Thunder, 7 p.m. CTThis article originally appeared on OKC Thunder Wire: How many baseball series will OKC Thunder play in 2026-27 regular season?

Teams interested in Joey Porter Jr. trade
PITTSBURGH, PA - JANUARY 12: Joey Porter Jr. #24 of the Pittsburgh Steelers defends in coverage during an NFL wild card playoff football game against the Houston Texans at Acrisure Stadium on January 12, 2026 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. (Photo by Cooper Neill/Getty Images) | Getty Images In what has become an increasingly common chapter in high-profile NFL contract negotiation sagas, Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr. is now the subject of trade rumors, according to insider Jordan Schultz. #Steelers CB Joey Porter Jr. is a name multiple teams around the NFL have wondered about as a potential trade target, per sources.JPJ is in the final year of his rookie contract, and with where the CB market is, teams have wondered if Pittsburgh could ultimately be open to a… pic.twitter.com/0t1CX9laOQ— Jordan Schultz (@Schultz_Report) August 21, 2026“Joey Porter Jr. is a name multiple teams around the NFL have wondered about as a potential trade target, per source,” Schultz posted late Thursday. “(Porter) is in the final year of his rookie contract, and with where the CB market is, teams have wondered if Pittsburgh could ultimately be open to a move with the Pro Bowl caliber corner.” The Steelers have completed contract extensions with three members of the team’s 2023 draft class already this offseason with Nick Herbig, Darnell Washington and most recently Keeanu Benton landing new deals. And with the top of the cornerback market now solidly over $30 million per year on average — the Seahawks’ Devon Witherspoon recently signed a four-year, $132 million extension — Porter’s asking price is expected to be well above what his teammates received. Porter remains under contract in 2026, but started camp on the physically unable to perform list with a reported back injury. Schultz’s wording is vague in the report, not mentioning if the Steelers have any interest in trading the 26-year-old defensive back, and it doesn’t seem to mention that any team has reached out to Pittsburgh, either. Steelers beat writers such as Steelers Now’s Alan Saunders have responded to the report saying it would be a surprise if Pittsburgh moved on from Porter this year.

Jolie Farmer leads Maryland women’s soccer to 2-1 win over Fairleigh Dickinson
Goalkeeper Faith Luckey (7) Maryland Women’s Soccer vs. Purdue at Ludwig Field in College Park, MD on Sunday Sept 21, 2025. | Photo by Rose Fernandes/ Maryland Terrapins Penn State transfer Jolie Farmer made her presence known in Maryland women’s soccer’s season opener against Fordham Sunday when she scored the game’s only goal. On Thursday, the redshirt sophomore doubled her impact, scoring twice and leading the way for Maryland to take down Fairleigh Dickinson, 2-1.Her goal scoring started early as she scored her second goal of the season less than two minutes into the match.Maryland made its presence known quickly Thursday night in College Park as the offense erupted quickly against Fairleigh Dickinson. The lone goal scorer in the Terps’ 1-0 win vs Fordham on Sunday kept up her offensive momentum — Farmer scored her second goal of the season less than two minutes into the match against FDU.Maryland maintained possession for the majority of the first half, giving FDU few chances in their own offensive zone.Farmer was a threat throughout the contest, putting two shots on goal in the first half and generating multiple offensive opportunities for her fellow forwards. This continued in the second half, as she capitalized on a frenzy around the net and knocked in her second goal of the game and third of the season in the 66th minute.Farmer, who had yet to score a goal in her collegiate career prior to 2026, now has all three Maryland goals on the season through two games.Mckinley Heaven also made her presence felt with two powerful shots. While both were strong kicks, they soared over the crossbar to relieve FDU goalkeeper Rosemarie Leblanc. The Terps led in the possession battle through the first 45 minutes as the Knights didn’t record a single shot on goal. This advantage in possession was thanks to a strong and aggressive showing from Maryland’s defense, highlighted by midfielder Emily Lenhard, who drew an unsporting yellow card 42 minutes into the first half. As the second half opened, FDU came out aggressive and got their first shot on goal. However, the chance was met easily by Meredith Fisher, who was subbed out 15 minutes into the second half for Faith Luckey.Luckey, who started all 18 games in 2025, made one save and allowed one goal in 29 minutes of action.FDU’s lone goal came from freshman Amina Brown, who scored her first goal of the season in the 72nd minute of the game.Fairleigh Dickinson ended the game with a total of three shots on goal, yet it could not compete with the 15 that came from Maryland’s offensive successes.Farmer, whose two goals secured the victory for the Terps, ended the game with six shots on goal after playing all but nine minutes of the match. Both of her goals came unassisted, exemplifying her individual offensive dominance throughout the game. After a key assist against Fordham on Sunday, Lilly Bane continued to establish her presence with three shots on goal that forced Leblanc to stand on her head on multiple occasions.Three things to know1. On the road. Maryland takes their first road trip of the season as they head to Blacksburg, Virginia Sunday to take on an unbeaten Virginia Tech squad. 2. Painting the frame. Thursday’s 18 shots on goal are the most the Terps have tallied in their last 17 games dating back to last season.3. Hot start. Farmer is the first Terp since 2013 to score the team’s first three goals of the season as she continues to prove herself as a valuable addition for head coach Michael Marchiano.

‘Horrific stuff’: Criticism mounts for Sophie Cunningham after historically bad performance
Jul 31, 2026; Portland, Oregon, USA; Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham (8) reacts to game play against the Portland Fire during the first half at Moda Center. Mandatory Credit: Jaime Valdez-Imagn ImagesOver the past several weeks, Sophie Cunningham has emerged as one of the most high-profile players in the WNBA after she chose to speak out against transgender women competing in women’s sports. The unfortunate reality, however, is that her actual production on the court does not match her fame, and that was quite evident on Thursday night.Despite Cunningham’s recent surge in popularity, she is just a role player who comes off the bench for the Indiana Fever, and she had her worst game of the season on Thursday night, leading to some strong criticism on social media.Cunningham makes headlinesLast month, Cunningham made headlines across the country and the world when she was quoted as speaking out against transgender athletes in an ESPN article. In an interview for the ESPN profile, Cunningham was asked about her political beliefs, including the “MAGA Barbie” nickname that she has been given recently. In response, the Indiana Fever guard shared her opinion on transgender athletes competing in women’s sports.“I got a lot of negative feedback about me hating trans. And I’m like, ‘I never once said that,’” she told ESPN. “I think that I am here to extend love. But I also think with that love is truth, being honest. And I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn’t have to go against biological men.”While the comments were from an interview done back in February, Cunningham doubled down on that stance, describing her opinion as “common sense.”“I said what I said. I think it’s kind of common sense,” Cunningham said last month. “And I think I’ll always believe in that. I think it’s really important to protect children, and that’s little girls who are also involved in that category. I stand on what I said.”Since then, the debate has engulfed the country, drawing protests from both sides outside WNBA arenas, sparking comments from politicians throughout the nation, and even led two NBA players to mock the WNBA’s gender policy by declaring themselves eligible for the WNBA Draft.Cunningham has a bad gameAfter her comments speaking out against trans women in women’s sports, Cunningham has developed a rather sizable following of fans, many of whom were in attendance for Thursday night’s game against the Dallas Wings. Unfortunately, Cunningham did not perform all that well at all.In 15 minutes of action off the bench on Thursday night, Cunningham scored zero points, missing all four of her shot attempts. She also had zero rebounds and zero assists, zero blocks, and zero steals. The only stat that Cunningham accumulated during her 15 minutes on the court was actually a negative one, as she was whistled for one foul.Cunningham is a role player who comes off the bench, so she does not usually put up big numbers in any statistical category. However, this was a brutal game by even those standards. This was the first time since 2021 that Cunningham finished without a single point, rebound, or assist in a game. It was the first time in her entire career that she had no stats in any of those categories while playing 15 or more minutes.Criticism mountsNeedless to say, this performance led to a lot of criticism from fans.“Yo is that SophieCunningham statline real?” one fan asked.“WNBA superstar Sophie Cunningham just put up a Tony Snell impression in a marquee matchup. What will she do next?” a prominent Boston Celtics fan account wrote in a post.“SophieCunningham doesn’t have 1 point, 1 assist or 1 rebound and she was on the court for 14 mins,” another fan added.“it’s no way sophiecunningham is on a wnba roster in 2027 ngl this is horrific stuff,” someone else wrote.“SophieCunningham just taking up space on that team….” another fan wrote.“What exactly does SophieCunningham do?! They need to replace her with another player that can give them more production!” someone else added.“SophieCunningham scored 0 points in 15 minutes for the Fever tonight. Thought I’d share these stats, since she wants us to talk about basketball now,” another fan added. We’ll have to see whether or not Cunningham will be able to bounce back from this performance. The post ‘Horrific stuff’: Criticism mounts for Sophie Cunningham after historically bad performance appeared first on The Comeback: Today’s Top Sports Stories & Reactions.

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - Four area high school volleyball teams got their season started in a unique way on Thursday night, playing outdoor matches on Lansing Catholic's football field as part of the first annual "Volleyturf Takeover."The concept of outdoor volleyball matches has grown in popularity ever since the Nebraska Cornhuskers drew 92,000 people to an outdoor volleyball match at Memorial Stadium in 2023.Similar events have popped up around the country in recent years, including the "Rally on Reed's" at East Grand Rapids High School in West Michigan. But Thursday night's event was the first time the concept has been tried in the Lansing area, and strong crowds came out to support two matches, Portland vs. Williamston and DeWitt vs. Lansing Catholic.Williamston defeated Portland 3-1 in the first match, while Lansing Catholic topped DeWitt _-_ in the nightcap. The event featured food trucks, face painting and yard games, as well as a youth camp and autographs from the MSU volleyball team earlier in the day. (AP Photo/Andrew Harnik, File)2026-08-21T02:18:17Z NEW YORK (AP) — Heavy rain and winds pounded the Northeast U.S. on Thursday as storms tore through a beach on Long Island, flooded a major New York freeway and knocked out power in parts of Delaware’s capital city.Photos and video shared on social media show debris thrown in the air and pummeling rain as a possible tornado touched down at Atlantic Beach on Long Island’s outer barrier. It tore apart a major beach club, leaving broken beach chairs and wood beams littered across the shoreline.Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman said there were no reports of serious injuries or deaths, but there had been damage to property and a search team was making sure no one was trapped in the cabanas. He declared a state of emergency.“There are reports of people trapped in their vehicles due to flooding in the south shore, and first responders are assisting in their rescue,” he said in a statement. The National Weather Service had warned of waterspouts, tornado-like hazards that happen over water, in the area but wasn’t able to immediately confirm a tornado on the beach.Bryan Ramsey, a meteorologist for the weather service in New York, said the storm was moving East offshore Thursday evening and was expected to taper over the next several hours. In other parts of New York, flooding caused part of the Long Island Expressway in Queens to close in both directions, according to New York City Emergency Management. Photos on social media show lines of stopped cars as emergency crew wade through the water. A likely tornado touched down in Dover, Delaware, and caused significant damage across the city, the police department reported. Read More “Dover — please take this seriously. Stay home. Stay safe,” the department said on Facebook.Photos and video online show fallen trees, downed power lines and flooded roads. The Delaware Electric Cooperative said more than 1,000 people didn’t have power in the northern part of its service area. There were flash flood warnings in parts of eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey, the weather service said.

Arike Ogunbowale flames Fever, Kelsey Mitchell makes history: Fever-Wings takeaways
DALLAS — By Thursday afternoon, the get-in ticket price at the American Airlines Center hovered around $80. The cost to view the fourth-ever WNBA matchup between Paige Bueckers and Caitlin Clark from the upper deck — less than a week after the scintillating third meeting in Indianapolis — was not overly prohibitive. The show had different stars and a different result this time. The Dallas Wings notched maybe their most-needed win of the season with a 91-85 victory over the Indiana Fever, at last finding some equilibrium after losing Azzi Fudd to season-ending knee surgery and sliding into eighth place in the WNBA standings. It also ended the Fever’s five-game winning streak and prevented them from clinching a playoff spot on their first try. Those among the 20,297 seeking another Bueckers-Clark duel, after each scored 29 points in last Friday’s meeting? They instead got Arike Ogunbowale scoring 32 points and Jessica Shepard adding 26 for Dallas in her return to the lineup, while Indiana’s Kelsey Mitchell carried a too-heavy load with 37 points — though she made history in doing so. Bueckers and Clark, meanwhile, missed a combined 22 of 31 shots from the field.Still, even without those two playing captivating basketball, it appears the Wings and Fever under the same roof is becoming a must-attend rivalry. Among the notables on hand Thursday night: Mark Cuban, Dallas Mavericks star Cooper Flagg and NBA Hall of Famer Tracy McGrady. Even WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert made an appearance, chatting up Cuban between the third and fourth quarters. As for Mitchell’s landmark moment: With a layup late in the first half, the All-Star guard broke the WNBA record for consecutive 20-point games, hitting that mark for the 21st straight outing.Azzi’s absenceNear the end of shootaround Thursday morning, Alysha Clark finished her routine from beyond the 3-point arc in her usual manner: ahead of a group of three teammates in an informal race to the end. “It’s been a clean sweep all season, don’t get it twisted,” the veteran Wings guard said.Something was very different nevertheless. Clark’s partner in the race is usually Fudd, the 2026 No. 1 overall pick. But Fudd won’t be participating in pregame contests for the foreseeable future, after the Wings announced she’d undergo arthroscopic surgery on her knee and miss the remainder of the season. It was another blow for a team that might have the worst injury luck in recent WNBA memory. The Wings, losers of 8 of 11 games coming into Thursday, have been bent about as much as a team can be bent before it snaps entirely.“In the past few years in Dallas,” guard Maddy Siegrist said of the injury setbacks, “we’ve had our fair share.”First it was Alanna Smith, a key free-agent signing, dealing with a concussion. Then it was All-Star forward Shepard, turning her ankle and missing a couple games. Now it’s Fudd, who started every game in which she appeared since May 28; whose 39.7 percent shooting from 3-point range ranked 15th in the league; and who’d been drawing defensive duties on the opposition’s top backcourt threat.“The biggest thing Azzi did, besides on the defensive end, she spread the floor,” Wings coach Jose Fernandez said. “We need someone that can space the floor, defend and make shots.“It’s tough to replace what she did, especially as a rookie.”The Wings still have a 99 percent chance of reaching the playoffs, per PlayoffStatus.com. And recently injured guard Aziaha James (lower leg) will be evaluated in a week with a chance to return before the FIBA World Cup break. But the juggling continues. There’s been a new starter in each game of Fudd’s recent absence, and Thursday, the Wings went with a super-big lineup of Smith, Shepard and Awak Kuier in the frontcourt (which did help the Wings amass 46 points in the paint, a 20-point edge on the Fever). It’s reflective of an urgency to create momentum before the Wings get to the postseason, lest they limp in and slink out fast.“For us, right now, it’s winning games because our playoff spot isn’t solidified,” Clark said. “We don’t want to leave it up to chance and leave it up to what other teams are doing. That’s not a position you want to be in, and we worked too hard this entire season to put ourselves in a successful position.”Mitchell stays hot — in a good wayThe pregame health report on Mitchell, the second-leading scorer in the WNBA, was both vague and completely to the point.“She’s Kelsey,” Fever coach Stephanie White said. “Until I hear otherwise, I think she’s feeling pretty good.”An overly stuffy arena in Toronto on Tuesday led to Mitchell feeling overheated and sitting the entirety of the fourth quarter out of an abundance of caution. She’d previously been diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis, a condition that can be brought on by overexertion, after collapsing from lower-body cramping and temporary leg paralysis during a 2025 playoff series against the Las Vegas Aces. But Mitchell participated in shootaround and warmups in full Thursday, started as usual, and then went about setting a WNBA record. With four seconds left in the first half, Mitchell snagged a needle-threading pass from Caitlin Clark and finished in traffic for her 20th and 21st points of the night. With that, Mitchell had her 21st consecutive game with 20 or more points, breaking Aces star A’ja Wilson’s record.“We have a great big three, and those two are certainly in MVP conversations and they deserve to be,” White said of Mitchell and Clark before the game. “Their numbers are incredible. The way they’ve elevated our team has been incredible.”Fever still short of playoff bar — for nowWith a win, the Fever would have set a franchise record for victories for a second straight season and clinched a postseason spot. It is bound to happen at some point, of course, maybe as soon as Friday night should the Toronto Tempo beat the Portland Fire. That result would officially put Indiana in the mix for a championship chase. But getting in is not the point anyway. Not anymore.“It’s the natural growth process for our young team,” White said before the game. “This is the expectation, to be in these situations. Now (it’s) the understanding of how important seeding and home court is.“I’m proud of how far we’ve come. We still have a ways to go. Certainly don’t want to be peaking right now, but we’re in the upward trajectory that we hoped.”This article originally appeared in The Athletic.Dallas Wings, WNBA2026 The Athletic Media Company

Unioto starts season with statement win over Jackson
CHILLICOTHE — Doubted. Overlooked. Ignored.Who cares? Thanks to a near-perfect first half, and a defense that laid wood all night long, Unioto started its season with a 35-21 win over Jackson on Thursday night. It was, without a doubt, a statement victory and one that — for the present moment — hushes the program’s naysayers.“If we’re talking about programs, Unioto isn’t on the same planet as Jackson High School football,” Unioto coach Matt Hoops said. We’re just trying to get better. Have we had some success over the past four years? Yes. But [Jackson] has been good for a long time. We knew we were going to have to be up for the challenge tonight to give ourselves a chance. We did that.”RELATED: With expectations in place, Huntington hoping to make playoff pushRELATED: After injury, Unioto's Yusef Wilson has something to prove this fallRight off the bat, the Shermans’ defense set the tone, forcing a three-and-out to give their offense the football. And on the 10th play of a 77-yard drive, quarterback Isaac Coy found Brayden Harsha open for a four-yard touchdown to make it 7-0 with 4:46 to play in the first quarter.“To get a three-and-out and then be able to manage the clock with a fast-slow, fast-slow tempo like we did, that was huge,” Hoops said. “I don’t think we could’ve started any better than that. And for Isaac, just being a senior quarterback and getting the ball to a great athlete like Harsha in the corner of the end zone, it was just huge.”The Ironmen answered, forcing a fumble deep in Sherman territory before capitalizing on the opportunity with a two-yard touchdown plunge from Israel Schindler — evening the score at the 10:31 mark in the second. But after several trades possessions, Unioto (1-0) returned the favor with a defensive stop of its own. Jackson (0-1) gambled with a fake punt try, but the Shermans’ defense held its ground, giving the ball to Coy and company at the Ironmen’ 20-yard line.Just over two minutes later, senior Yusef Wilson found the end zone from a yard out on 4th & 1, putting Unioto back on top at 14-7Wilson was just getting started, though. The senior completely changed the tide with less than a minute to go. After transitioning to his linebacker position, Wilson forced a fumble with a sack, picked up the ball and made a beeline to the house, extending the lead to 21-7 at the break. “That was the play that allowed us to get over the hump,” Hoops said. “That play is what fueled us going into the second half.”The Shermans stayed locked in after the break, too. Coy started the third quarter with a bang, finding Levi Beam for a 56-yard touchdown toss at the 7:56 mark to make it a 28-7 count.“The message at halftime was to be mature,” Hoops said. “Were the kids excited when they got into the locker room? Absolutely. But we talked about playing with emotion, but not playing emotional. We wanted to be in the right head space. I just felt like we came out in the second half with the right mindset.”Jackson added a 37-yard touchdown run from Tate Rosler in the third quarter before Coy answered early in the fourth with a one-yard score. The Ironmen closed the night’s scoring with a nine-yard touchdown run from CJ Crabtree in garbage time.“We just try to keep things super simple,” Hoops said. “I loved the atmosphere here tonight, and I think that brought some extra excitement. I also think our kids knew how big this win would be for our program and for the players who got us to this point. I think that’s what motivated these guys. It’s awesome to see it continuing to trend upward.”Unioto will be back in action on Aug. 28, hosting Athens. The Bulldogs replaced Vinton County on the Shermans’ non-league schedule and are coming off a 9-2 finish last fall.“The message this week will be, ‘How do you handle success?’ That’s just as important as how you handle adversity,” Hoops said. “We just have to stay healthy and see what we do next Friday.”This article originally appeared on Chillicothe Gazette: Unioto starts season with statement win over Jackson

Paige Bueckers’ heated Caitlin Clark sequence could lead to WNBA fine
Paige Bueckers’ heated Caitlin Clark sequence could lead to WNBA fine originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.A one-on-one matchup between Paige Bueckers and Caitlin Clark ended with a whistle, a heated complaint and a potential fine for the Dallas Wings star. The sequence unfolded during the fourth quarter of Thursday night’s game between the Wings and Indiana Fever. After Makayla Timpson secured a defensive rebound, she delivered the ball to Clark, who pushed it up the floor.Bueckers attempted to stop Clark in transition but was called for a personal foul. The former UConn star immediately disputed the decision and appeared to argue that Clark had used her arm to create separation. The disagreement continued long enough for the official to assess Bueckers a technical foul.Bueckers could owe WNBA $500The technical initially was reported as Bueckers’ second of the season, according to Athlon Sports. However, her first technical, issued during a May 22 game against the Atlanta Dream, later was rescinded. If Thursday’s call is upheld, it would count as Bueckers’ first official technical of the year.WNBA players are fined $500 for each of their first three technical fouls. The penalty increases to $1,000 for technicals four through seven. An eighth technical results in a $1,500 fine and a one-game suspension, with another suspension following every second technical after that threshold. That means Bueckers could receive a $500 fine following the Clark sequence. The league reviews technical fouls, and Dallas could challenge the ruling. There is no guarantee the call will remain on Bueckers’ record, particularly after her earlier technical was overturned.MORE: Kelsey Mitchell breaks two records during historic performance against WingsClark knows how quickly technicals can accumulateClark has dealt with the same disciplinary process this season. The Fever guard briefly appeared to reach the eight-technical threshold following an Aug. 8 game against the Chicago Sky. The league later rescinded that call, allowing Clark to avoid an automatic suspension. That context made Thursday’s exchange even more notable. Clark and Bueckers are two of the WNBA’s most prominent guards, and their head-to-head matchup was certain to attract attention. A disputed whistle added tension during a close fourth quarter. Dallas ultimately secured a 91-85 victory, ending Indiana’s five-game winning streak. That result should matter considerably more to Bueckers than the possible fine.Still, a routine defensive possession developed into one of the game’s most discussed moments. The WNBA now must determine whether Bueckers’ reaction merits a lasting place on her disciplinary record.More WNBA news:A'ja Wilson vs. Olivia Miles debate is on with Caitlin Clark, Paige Bueckers lurkingIndiana Fever celebrate Sophie Cunningham with special message on 30th birthdayWhy Indiana lieutenant governor is calling for Stephanie White's firing

What Dan Quinn said about playing Jayden Daniels vs. Lions
The Washington Commanders face the Detroit Lions on Saturday in the second preseason game. There’s been a debate all week on whether starting quarterback Jayden Daniels will play. Daniels is 100% healthy, so why the debate?Head coach Dan Quinn has been vague all week about who will play. On Thursday, Quinn met with the media for the final time before Saturday’s game and had an interesting answer when asked if Daniels would play. “Once I know the health of everybody else around, then I’ll have a better sense for it,” Quinn said. When he says the health of everyone around him, does he mean center Nick Allegretti? Or the fact that several of Washington’s running backs are dinged up and the Commanders may play Saturday’s game with two rookies and a recently signed veteran. Would Quinn trust any of those backs in pass protection with Daniels in the game?Quinn already ruled Allegretti out for Saturday. “Nick’s calf was tight yesterday within practice, so we took him out,” he said. "And then we did some imaging last night, and the good news is that it came back clean. So, we’ll hold him from the game this weekend. He’ll stay back here, rehab, and then get another evaluation on Sunday is what it looks like for the joint practice [with Baltimore].”Allegretti has only practiced three days since training camp began over three weeks ago. That is a big concern since he has played only a handful of games at center in his NFL career, and the Commanders are also adjusting to a new offense that will feature Daniels more under center. And the two players behind Allegretti have a combined two NFL snaps. As for Daniels, if he’s healthy, he should play. Even if it’s only for a drive. How did a similar strategy work last season? Quinn has done a good job of breaking from some of his norms this summer. If Allegretti being out is the sole reason that Washington is considering sitting Daniels, then GM Adam Peters is admitting he didn’t do a good enough job at center. First group of deportees arrives in troubled Haiti after US ends TPS program
Children watch a movie on a mobile device at a shelter for families displaced by gang violence in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2026. (AP Photo/Odelyn Joseph)2026-08-21T03:36:29Z CAP-HAITIEN, Haiti (AP) — The U.S. deported more than 160 people to Haiti on Thursday for the first time since the Trump administration won a legal battle to end Temporary Protected Status for some 350,000 Haitians. The plane landed in the northern Haitian city of Cap-Haitien because the main international airport in Port-au-Prince is considered too dangerous. The U.S. government currently has a ban on U.S. commercial flights to Haiti’s capital through early September because of ongoing gang violence. The deportees were clad in white, and many covered their faces out of safety as journalists filmed their arrival. Nearly all declined to talk, with some fearing being targeted by gangs that control an estimated 70% of Port-au-Prince and swaths of land beyond. The deportees included TPS holders and Haitians who had served prison sentences, said Jean Négot Bonheur Delva, director general of Haiti’s National Office of Migration.“It is not the Haitian state that asks for them to be sent back,” he said. “Our mission is to welcome migrants of forced return. … We welcome them with the aim of accompanying them to their home.” Deported Haitians search for a homeDelva noted that some of the deportees were not born in Haiti, although they are of Haitian descent. He said that several deportees planned to travel to Haiti’s southern region, a dangerous journey because gangs control the main routes leading to that area and are known to randomly open fire on vehicles passing through. Others are going to Haiti’s western region, he said. Read More “There is one migrant who knows nothing about Haiti because he said he was coming from the Dominican Republic; that’s where he was born,” Delva said.He said the government would attempt to reunify him with any potential relatives in Haiti or the Dominican Republic, where his mother and father live.Immigration officials in Haiti on Thursday offered deportees a maximum of $65 and something to drink and eat.“Those who cannot reach their homes today, we will host them in secure spaces and the next day the process will continue until all migrants return home as they should,” Delva said. Delva did not say how many of the 161 deportees were TPS holders who had been living and working legally in the U.S. since 2010. In late June, the U.S. Supreme Court allowed the TPS program to end, affecting some 1 million people from more than a dozen countries. The cases went back to the lower courts, but by late July, the government had not extended work permits for Haitians. On Aug. 5, a federal judge in Washington, D.C., lifted an order preventing deportations of Haitians on Temporary Protected Status, which was effectively a formality after the Supreme Court ruling in June.Activists warn Haiti is too dangerous for deporteesActivists have warned that Haiti is currently too dangerous and doesn’t have enough resources to help those being deported to a country of nearly 12 million people, of which more than half need humanitarian assistance because of surging gang violence and deepening poverty, hunger and violence.Gang violence already has displaced a record 1.5 million people across Haiti, where more than 3,100 people were reported killed from January to June and another 1,189 injured, according to U.N. statistics. One deportee briefly spoke to The Associated Press as he arrived in Cap-Haitien. He identified himself as Jean Diane Louis and said he left Haiti when he was 5 years old. He said his family lives in New York City and that he was sentenced to 19 years in prison for an unspecified crime he asserted he did not commit.“Then ICE came and took me without questioning me,” Louis said. “They just sent me here.”As gang violence persists, Haitian migrants in the U.S. continue to be arrested and deported. On Thursday, U.S. authorities arrested a popular Haitian pastor at a gas station in Springfield, Ohio, according to Springfield G92, a faith-based group supporting Haitian immigrants. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested a second Haitian man who was with him.The pastor, Gilbert Joubert Adrien, was being held by immigration authorities in Ohio, said Marjory Wentworth, a spokesperson for Springfield G92. She said ICE has been a heavy presence in recent days in Springfield, a city of about 60,000 people that gained attention when U.S. President Donald Trump said falsely during his 2024 campaign that Haitian residents there ate dogs.Haiti’s Group Supporting Refugees and Returnees has decried the deportations. “Haiti is not ready to receive this number of migrants who were in the TPS program,” it said in a statement Thursday. The group noted that more than 140,000 Haitians have been deported from neighboring countries, including the Dominican Republic, in the first half of the year alone.“We note that there are no government measures in place to adequately assist these migrants,” the group said.It added that many of those deported “have seen their dreams go up in smoke; the bonds they had already made in their communities are broken. Many are experiencing family separation.”The U.S. had conducted about one deportation flight to Haiti since December 2023, according to Human Rights First’s ICE Flight Monitor, which tracks flight data. Since December 2025, flights have originated in Alexandria, Louisiana, a hub for ICE deportation flights, with a stop in Miami on the way to Cap-Haitien International Airport. ___Coto reported from San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Bayern Munich News: FC Barcelona still wants FC Bayern star Harry Kane; Real Madrid scoping Arsenal star; and MORE!
MUNICH, GERMANY - AUGUST 20: Harry Kane of FC Bayern Muenchen during a training session at Saebener Strasse training ground on August 20, 2026 in Munich, Germany. (Photo by N. Hermann/FC Bayern via Getty Images) | FC Bayern via Getty Images Barca still eyeing Kane (Daily Mail)At this point, it would be a massive surprise if Harry Kane backed out of talks with Bayern Munich and pushed to leave the club before the transfer window ends. Even the thought of that seems ludicrous after months of both Kane and club officials saying that the Englishman is not going anywhere. Still, there is another report indicating that FC Barcelona, who does need a striker, is watching Kane’s situation from afar: Barcelona are monitoring Harry Kane’s contract talks with Bayern Munich. The England captain is giving priority to resolving his future with the German champions where he is settled and discussions are ongoing about the length of deal for the 33-year-old.Kane is understood to want a three-year deal and, as Daily Mail Sport revealed earlier this summer, Barca have made their interest known. Al Hilal are also keen on Kane even though they are pursuing Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins too. There does not seem to be any chance that Kane will leave Bayern Munich, but if there is a smidge of a reason to worry, it would be because Barca has — somehow — just found ways to get deals done this summer. Whether it was swiping Anthony Gordon away from Bayern Munich or convincing Rodri to leave Manchester City and bail on a move to Real Madrid. Is there a chance that FC Barcelona could work its magic once again? Well, there is always a chance, but it does not seem likely or that Kane would waver on his commitment to Bayern Munich. The only hiccup could be if Bayern Munich and Kane just cannot come an agreement on years for the extension, which does not seem likely. Nkunku has three clubs vying for him (ESPN)At several different points, Bayern Munich was linked to versatile attacker Christopher Nkunku. Maybe the Bavarians dodged a bullet, though, as Nkunku has not seemed to settle down anywhere since leaving RB Leipzig: Newcastle United are one of three clubs vying to sign AC Milan forward Christopher Nkunku this summer, according to Footmercato. The France international is also wanted by Borussia Dortmund and his former side RB Leipzig, who are pushing hard to secure a deal. As things stand, a move to Saudi Arabia or Türkiye is not being considered by Nkunku, who scored seven goals in 32 Serie A matches last term.Nkunku going to Borussia Dortmund or RB Leipzig is interesting and could provide a boost to either team — if Nkunku can rediscover his old form. Andrich stripped of captaincy, told he can leave Leverkusen (Sky Germany’s Patrick Berger)Talk about the unkindest cut all — Bayer Leverkusen told longtime midfielder Robert Andrich that he can leave the club and to hand over the captain’s armband:🚨⚫️🔴 BREAKING: Robert Andrich is no longer captain of Bayer Leverkusen. Andrich was also informed that he can leave the #Werkself this summer.Andrich is older, but does still have some value. It would not be totally out of the realm of possibility for him to transition to center-back, too. Where will he land?Real still mulling move for Zubimendi (ESPN)Real Madrid missed out Rodri, but could take a run at Arsenal defensive midfielder Martin Zubimendi: Real Madrid are interested in Arsenal midfielder Martín Zubimendi, according to TEAMtalk. It is reported that discussions have already taken place with the 27-year-old’s representatives, with Madrid manager Jose Mourinho keen on signing him. Zubimendi, who has recently been linked with Chelsea, arrived at the Emirates Stadium for a fee of €60 million last summer, and Arsenal are open to letting him go if they receive the right proposal. He played in all 38 Premier League matches last season on the way to winning the title.Skhiri back to Köln (Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg)FC Köln, who just re-upped Said El Mala, is also bringing back Ellyes Skhiri: 🚨💥 Ellyes Skhiri back to 1. FC Köln – DONE DEAL ✔️Full agreement reached with Eintracht Frankfurt following@Mr_Frankynatorand green light from Skhiri.Been told the transfer fee is €1m + add-ons. Decision made. That’s why Gala have signed Aleksey Batrakov from Lokomotiv Moscow.Galatasaray made an official proposal of around €25–30m for Uzun, but Eintracht Frankfurt rejected it.Uzun’s future remains open, with clubs from Italy and Spain monitoring the situation.Frankfurt are demanding €50–60m – too much for some interested clubs so far. One to watch until #Deadlineday. @SkySportDEChelsea, United eyeing Koné (ESPN)Chelsea and Manchester United are both taking a look at AS Roma midfielder Manu Koné: Chelsea and Manchester United are interested in AS Roma midfielder Manu Koné, reports Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport. The 25-year-old has recently been linked with Atlético Madrid, who had a €43 million offer for him turned down, with Roma standing firm on their €50 million transfer valuation. Kone made five appearances for France at the World Cup this summer which has seen interest in his signature continue to grow, but both Premier League sides could face competition from multiple clubs in the Saudi Pro League.Bayern Alumni: Cancelo is back at Barca (FC Barcelona)João Cancelo has inked a three-year deal with FC Barcelona: Glad to have you here, João 💙❤️ pic.twitter.com/cp7o3ymkCS— FC Barcelona (@FCBarcelona) August 20, 2026Ronaldinho is back…sort of (Bleacher Report)In what is obviously a publicity stunt, Ronaldinho signed a deal to play for a third division team in Italy:Ronaldinho is presented as a Ravenna FC player. 46-year-old Dinho came out of retirement to join the Serie C side 🤙🇮🇹 pic.twitter.com/BBJ2zZ72KK— B/R Football (@brfootball) August 20, 2026If you are looking for more Bayern Munich and German national team coverage, check out the latest episodes of Bavarian Podcast Works, which you can get on Acast, Spotify, Apple, or any leading podcast distributor… Join the conversation!Sign up for a user account and get:Comment on articles, community postsRec comments, community postsNew, improved notifications system!Fewer adsCreate community posts
