SPORTS.YAHOO.COMRichard T. Lee leads after Day 2 of LIV Golf Indy; hopes to have a surprise for his wifeWESTFIELD -- Richard T. Lee followed up a strong first round with a 4-under par 66, putting him atop the leaderboard after Day 2 of LIV Golf Indy at Chatham Hills in Westfield on Friday.Lee shot 7-under par on Thursday. His second round moved his total score to 11-under par, giving him a one-stroke lead over Thomas Detry (4Aces GC). Detry shot 6-under par on Friday. Teammate Thomas Pieters shot 5-under par helping 4Aces shoot 18-under as a team, giving them a 31-under team total after two rounds and a five-stroke lead over Torque GC.Lee credited his wife with picking his walk-up song "Gold Digger" by Kanye West. Lee isn't looking past the next two days, but if he continues his strong play, he could be taking home the prize money. "I don't want to think too ahead for myself, but yeah, definitely a victory would be amazing," Lee said. "It's always been a dream to play with these guys and have a big victory out there. Hopefully if I win, I have a little surprise for my wife this week."Lee became the first Canadian-born player to join LIV, winning the Black Diamond Ranch tournament in January and earning a spot on the main tour through the LIV Golf Promotions series. He finished second at Singapore in March, but struggled over his next six events before finding his groove at LIV New York earlier this month, finishing tied for 11th. Lee said he's been working on his irons and is using his time around big names like John Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau to pick up as many tips as he can. Those big names on the tour will be a key part of the tour's future, but for now, Lee is trying to establish himself with another strong round. On the team side, 4Aces are led by close friends Pieters and Detry. The two have a competitive friendship that fuels their play on the course. "Yeah, we go a long way," Detry said. "We've sort of followed the same path since we started really. We played the same junior tournaments. We played in the same International Team. Then we both went to Illinois. We ended up both playing on DP World Tour, then both PGA TOUR. We did a lot of the same. We had the same agent as well. We sort of followed a very similar path."We've been good friends and a very competitive friendship forever, and it's been a really fun ride."This article originally appeared on Indianapolis Star: Richard T. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMMets will hold ceremony to honor retiring radio broadcaster Howie RoseCredit: Brad Penner-Imagn ImagesThe Mets have announced a ceremony to honor retiring radio play-by-play announcer Howie Rose. The ceremony will take place on September 20 at Citi Field, prior to the Mets’ final regular-season home game against the Philadelphia Phillies. The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. ET start.Rose announced his plans to retire in March.“The pre-game ceremony will recognize Rose’s remarkable broadcasting career and his lasting impact on the Mets organization, New York sports, and the fans who have listened to him bring the game to life for decades,” the Mets said. The Mets will also give away a “Put It in the Books!” notebook and scorecard to the first 15,000 fans in attendance.“Howie’s impact extends far beyond the booth,” said Mets owners Steve and Alex Cohen in a statement. “He is part of the fabric of this franchise, and we are proud to celebrate an extraordinary career while thanking him for everything he has meant to the Mets. We wish Howie and his family nothing but the best in this next chapter.”“Having grown up a Mets fan, calling games for this organization has been the honor of a lifetime,” added Rose. “I am deeply grateful to the Mets and ownership, my broadcast partners, the players, coaches and staff, and most of all, the fans who have made this journey so meaningful. Sharing one more day at Citi Field with them is something I will cherish forever.”Rose worked on-air for the Mets for almost 40 years. He served as the host for “Mets Extra” studio programming beginning in 1987, before transitioning to a play-by-play role in 1995.Rose, who was diagnosed with bladder cancer in 2021, has reduced his schedule in recent years. He is scheduled to call 84 games this season, including all home broadcasts from Citi Field and three Subway Series road games from Yankee Stadium in September. He announced in March that he would retire after the 2026 season.Retirement won’t necessarily be the end of Howie Rose in the Mets radio booth, however. In an interview with Anthony Rieber in Newsday earlier in August, Rose said he might “pop into the booth if the kids need a break from time to time.”“I’m not saying I’ll never do another game after Sept. 20, but as a full-time thing, that’ll be it,” Rose added.Rose is only 72, but said he decided to retire in part because he “didn’t want to overstay his welcome.”The post Mets will hold ceremony to honor retiring radio broadcaster Howie Rose appeared first on Awful Announcing.0 التعليقات 0 المشاركات 1 مشاهدة 0 معاينة -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COM5 Cowboys to watch in Week 2 of the preseason vs the CardinalsThe Dallas Cowboys are on the road for their second preseason game on Saturday night, this time against the Arizona Cardinals. After beating the current Super Bowl champions in the exhibition opener, the Cowboys get a milder test going up against a team that isn’t expected to be very good in 2026.The purpose of the preseason isn’t necessarily to win, however, but to get an evaluation of the team. The Cowboys got the win over the Seattle Seahawks in Week 1, yet there was a sense they could’ve performed better. Special teams and penalties were a problem, and there are plenty players fighting for few roster spots. Mix it all together with a much awaited pro debut, and here are five Cowboys to watch for in the matchup with the Cardinals.LB Jaishawn BarhamThe third-round pick from Michigan had been one of the stars in training camp, but a groin injury cost Barham valuable practice time, also causing him to miss the exhibition opener. Barham was back on the field for the last workout in Oxnard and is on track to make his debut in Week 2.Jaishawn Barham (groin) will likely make his preseason debut for the #Cowboys against the Cardinals. “it’s nice to have him back.” - Schotty— Patrik [No C] Walker (@VoiceOfTheStar) August 20, 2026Few players have captured the attention of camp observers like Barham, now fans will get to see what the hype is about firsthand.WR Camden BrownAnother rookie who has intrigued gets an opportunity to prove he belongs. It was a banner performance for Brown against the Seahawks; his two highlight reel touchdowns have given him a better chance to claim a roster spot. The undrafted rookie free agent had another good week of practice leading up to the second preseason game, so if he can play well once again, the Cowboys might have found a hidden gem at wide receiver.Brown was also working on punt returns this week, something to keep an eye on against the Cardinals. If he can find a role on special teams, it’ll be hard to keep Brown off the 53-man roster.LB Marist LiufauThe Cowboys need help at linebacker, and Liufau appears to be running out of time to contribute. Liufau began training camp as an outside LB who was getting a look at pass rusher, but that doesn’t seem to be a fit either. Veteran Von Miller was brought in to help pressure the quarterback, a sign that Liufau’s days could be numbered.During practice this week, Liufau was also working at his original position of inside LB, a place where he has yet to establish himself as a consistent pro player. Liufau will get another chance to state his case to stick around.RBs Jaydon Blue and Phil MafahBoth played in the exhibition opener, but neither impressed, leading to rumblings about the Cowboys looking in to trading for a running back. During training camp, observers have expressed the top backup RB after starter Javante Wiliams has been Malik Davis, who was also their best performer in the backfield against the Seahawks. The hope is the Cowboys have both second-year runners available against the Cardinals, as both have missed time this week with injuries. Blue hurt his shoulder and Mafah hasn’t practiced all week with a chest issue; both are listed as questionable. If either or both do play, they’ll have to show more than they did in Week 1. Time is running out for both young RBs.OL Nate ThomasComing into camp, Thomas was fighting for a starting job. However, with Tyler Guyton locking down the left tackle gig and right tackle Terence Steele struggling some this summer, Thomas has been working on the right side as well. No matter where he lines up, the third-year lineman remains a work in progress.Donovan Ezeiruaku vs. Nate Thomas pic.twitter.com/TqFmRSyraH— Nick Harris (@NickHarrisFWST) August 20, 2026Backup offensive line is an area of concern for the Cowboys, who don’t seem to have enough quality. Thomas was supposed to be a top option, but he hasn’t had a strong camp. The game against the Cardinals is another shot for Thomas to get better, and the offensive line remains a place where the Cowboys are trying to find answers behind the starting five. Thomas will be a player to watch. This article originally appeared on Cowboys Wire: 5 Cowboys to watch in Week 2 of the preseason vs the Cardinals0 التعليقات 0 المشاركات 1 مشاهدة 0 معاينة -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMJordan Love plays one series, throws TD passPackers coach Matt LaFleur's plan was to play his starting offense more than one drive in Denver. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMTrinity pulls off major Super 25 high school football upset over top-ranked Ohio teamOne look at Trinity's (Louisville, KY) 2026 football schedule would make most coaches shrink away. The Shamrocks kicked off the season on the road in the first of many games against nationally ranked opponents on the road at Anderson (OH), the No. 24 team in the preseason USA TODAY Sports Super 25 rankings. After Friday night, Anderson's ranking and Trinity's status as an unranked team will be up for debate as Trinity rolled to a 59-13 victory. The Shamrocks needed just six plays to find the end zone as 2027 Buffalo quarterback commit Zane Johnson connected with Jason Hagan on a 26-yard touchdown reception. It was the first of what would turn into a 45-point first-half performance for the Shamrocks.Anderson trailed 21-0 before finally finding the end zone themselves late in the first quarter. By the time the first half came to an end, Trinity led 45-13 and it was the end of an impressive night for many of the Shamrock starters. It also meant a running clock for the remainder of the second half unless Anderson found the end zone again.Through the first two quarters, Johnson was 10-of-16 passing for 174 yards and a pair of touchdowns. His favorite target was tight end Jack Stivers, who caught three passes for 103 yards. The Shamrocks' running back duo of Jamaurion Berry and Ashton Taylor combined to rush for 111 yards on 11 total carries between the two, with each scoring twice.Next week, Trinity will once again be on the road as they travel to Christian Brothers (MO). SPORTS.YAHOO.COMKyle Tucker battles a brutal slump as the Dodgers chase a 3rd straight titleLOS ANGELES (AP) — Kyle Tucker is searching at the plate, looking for anything to escape an offensive slump that has made the four-time All-Star outfielder a liability in the Los Angeles Dodgers' chase for a third consecutive World Series championship. He took batting practice on the field Friday, ahead of the team's series opener against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Usually, Tucker hits in the indoor cage.“Just feel a good swing, try and find something that I can repeat with good ball flight, whether it’s hit the other way or pulled,” he said. "Just try to do something like that and carry it over to the game.”Tucker was batting .232 going into Friday, with 11 home runs, 55 RBI and an OPS of .694. His 92 strikeouts are close to surpassing his career-high of 95, set with the Houston Astros in 2022.He recently worked his way out of an 0-for-26 skid, going 3 for 9 with a double and an RBI in his last two games at Colorado. But over his last 10 games, Tucker is batting a measly .108 with four hits, two RBIs and four runs scored.Defensively, Tucker got booed at home last weekend after he lost a shallow fly ball in right field, resulting in a two-base error against Milwaukee. At Colorado, he dropped another shallow fly. It's all added up to a difficult debut with the Dodgers after he signed a $240 million, four-year deal in January, raising expectations that Tucker would add another big bat to go along with former MVPs Shohei Ohtani, Freddie Freeman and Mookie Betts.“Everyone here is super supportive of everything and everyone,” Tucker said. “So, regardless of how I feel or whatever, I’ve got to go out and play and perform.”The soft-spoken, low-key Tucker paused a beat when considering the mental toll his slump is exacting.“It’s been a struggle in the sense that I’d like to help our team win and perform better for the guys in the clubhouse and the fans that come to the games," he said. "In that aspect, I wish I would’ve done better this year.”Manager Dave Roberts can't put his finger on specifics, but he feels Tucker has turned a corner.“Mentally and emotionally, I think that he’s freed up,” Roberts said. “We’re in a fight and I think that he understands that there’s no other alternative but to keep going forward. I don’t know how to articulate it, but I just feel good about some of the things I’ve seen.”With 1 1/2 months to go, the Dodgers (77-51) are battling the Brewers (80-49) for the best record in the National League.“It's not over yet,” Tucker said. "Just gotta keep grinding every single day and just keep moving forward and just try to get better every single day. Just looking forward to finishing out the year strong.”___See AP’s full MLB coverage here0 التعليقات 0 المشاركات 1 مشاهدة 0 معاينة -
رابطAPNEWS.COMFormer Hong Kong vigil organizer strives to mark Tiananmen crackdown despite convictionsPro-democracy activist Tang Ngok-kwan poses for photographs in Victoria Park, an area where a candlelight vigil held to commemorate the Tiananmen crackdown in Hong Kong, Saturday, July 11, 2026. (AP Photo/Chan Long Hei)2026-08-22T01:34:27Z HONG KONG (AP) — Tang Ngok-kwan still occasionally visits the places where Hong Kong once publicly remembered Beijing’s 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown. Though Tang’s fellow activists were locked up in prison, accused of inciting subversion, and an annual candlelight vigil they previously organized to mourn the crackdown’s victims vanished, the 58-year-old continues to personally and discreetly remember the event, which is a political taboo on mainland China. At Victoria Park, where tens of thousands of people once gathered for the only large-scale public commemoration of the crackdown in China, Tang bowed on the eve of the anniversary and read of a list of the victims in a low voice. He sometimes returns to two university campuses where commemorative sculptures once stood, even though most traces of their existence already have vanished. Two of Tang’s former colleagues were convicted Friday under a Beijing-imposed national security law, facing a maximum prison term of 10 years. Their vigil organizing group also was found guilty. Government-approved judges ruled the pair had incited others to overthrow the leadership of China’s Communist Party through unlawful means. Many observers say the convictions were the latest case reflecting the decline in freedoms in the former British colony that returned to Chinese rule in 1997. Tang told The Associated Press that the arguments in the verdict did not convince him and he felt wronged on behalf of those convicted.“After the alliance was convicted, I feel that whenever people bring up the alliance, there’ll be a sense of wariness around it,” he said. Read More Decades dedicated to remembering the crackdownTang was an ordinary young man when he joined a wave of people who marched in Hong Kong in support of Beijing’s student-led, pro-democracy protests in May 1989.When tanks rolled into the heart of Beijing on the night of June 3-4 to quell the protests, Tang didn’t sleep. Hundreds, possibly thousands of people, were killed during the crackdown. Shortly after the bloody event, some members of the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China, along with others sympathetic to the protesters, mobilized to help bring those wanted by authorities to safety. The group also ran the massive public candlelight vigil that attracted tens of thousands of people annually for three decades. Tang says he feels a moral burden because he believes Hong Kong’s support might have left the students in a position with no easy exit in 1989. That kept the volunteers who became the core members of the alliance working behind the scenes for years. Activism leads to convictions and jail termsAuthorities banned the annual vigil in 2020, citing risks to public health during the COVID-19 pandemic. Weeks later, Beijing imposed the security law, saying it was necessary for the city’s stability following massive protests in 2019.The alliance’s fate was called into question in 2021. A mainland Chinese official criticized those chanting “end one-party dictatorship,” without naming the group. Police also sought details about its operations and finances in connection with alleged links to pro-democracy groups overseas, accusing it of being a foreign agent. But the group refused to cooperate and told reporters in September 2021 that the request was an “abuse of power.” Tang knew by then he would be imprisoned for not handing in the information. He recalled he was frightened when he saw a large crowd of reporters at the venue. “It really feels like everyone is watching how you die and then coming to see you off on your way,” he said. Days later, Tang was arrested over the refusal, alongside several other core members. The alliance’s chair and vice-chairs, Lee Cheuk-yan, Chow Hang-tung and Albert Ho, were charged under the security law. The group voted to disband soon after and two commemorative statues and one relief were removed at university campuses in late 2021. Tang, Chow and another core member were sentenced to 4 1/2 months in prison each in 2023 for failing to provide authorities with information. Tang’s prison term overlapped with the 35th anniversary of the crackdown. To remember it, he ran 35 laps barefoot. The trio’s convictions were quashed in 2025 by Hong Kong’s top court, though they had already served their terms. Engaging in quiet acts of remembrance The legal battle involving the vigil organizers did not end there. The trial for Lee and Chow began in January and Tang was a regular presence in the courtroom’s public gallery. Ho entered a guilty plea, a move that typically results in a sentence reduction. Before their trial, commemorating the crackdown publicly had already become politically sensitive. Police took away some people who tried to do so near the former vigil site on the crackdown anniversary. After the lifting of pandemic restrictions, an annual carnival occupied Victoria Park on every anniversary. Police wouldn’t let Tang enter court Friday if he insisted on bringing along “sensitive” materials, including bookmarks printed with the words “vindicate June 4,” he said.He has walked repeatedly between a subway station and the trial court to remember the years Lee and Chow spent in custody awaiting trial, he said, noting there are 64 steps leading up from the subway station exit, a number echoing the June 4 anniversary. Tang has an eye for details like that, he said, joking it was “pathological.” “When there’s nothing concrete you can do, the only option, to put it bluntly, well, it’s just another kind of way to balance your psychology,” he said. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMPWHL Walter Cup goes missing before scheduled appearance in CanadaMontreal Victoire forward Dara Greig was set to have a “bringing it home” ceremony where she shepherded her Professional Women’s Hockey League trophy around her hometown of Lethbridge in the Canadian province of Alberta on Thursday. But it was postponed.Because the Walter Cup is missing. The official Walter Cup, presented when the Victoire beat the Ottawa Charge in four games to win the PWHL championship in May, is housed in the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. Each championship-winning team, however, is issued its own version, and now Montreal’s is missing.“The Walter Cup keeper trophy awarded to the Montreal Victoire did not arrive as expected at its latest stop on the team’s tour,” the PWHL said in a statement. “We are working closely with the shipping company to locate it.”The trophy was scheduled to be shipped to Lethbridge, Alta., for Greig’s hometown celebration, including an event at VisitLethbridge.com Arena, according to the Associated Press. The container arrived as intended, but the trophy was not inside, and the event was postponed.🚨 EVENT POSTPONED 🚨Today’s Bringing It Home event with Walter Cup Champion Dara Greig has been postponed.Stay tuned for details on a new date and time. We can’t wait to celebrate with Dara and the Lethbridge community soon! 🏆 pic.twitter.com/PxSidQufZv— Lethbridge Hurricanes (@WHLHurricanes) August 20, 2026The PWHL was formed in August 2023, with its inaugural puck drop Jan. 1, 2024. It was founded with six teams, which grew to eight in the 2025-26 season. The Minnesota Frost won the first two championships, and Montreal in 2026 became the first Canadian team to win the Walter Cup.Tiffany & Co. designed the sterling silver cup. It is approximately 24 1/2 inches high, 13 inches wide and 12 1/2 inches long, weighing 35 pounds. The trophy’s design was intended for a specific purpose.“There was no debating whether it needed to be a cup,” PWHL senior vice president of hockey operations Jayna Hefford exclusively told The Athletic’s Hailey Salvian in 2024. “It needed to be something that you could drink out of. That was a non-negotiable with us.”While its NHL counterpart, the Stanley Cup, has full-time handlers when it travels, the Walter Cup doesn’t have such protections. Now Greig will have to wait to unveil it to her hometown until it can be found. The trophy is named after PWHL founder Mark Walter and his wife, Kimbra. Mark Walter, owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, recently agreed to sell his majority share of the Los Angeles Lakers to Bob Iger and Joshua Kushner for a valuation of $12.5 billion, a year after he bought the shares for a $10 billion valuation. This article originally appeared in The Athletic.Montreal Victoire, Women's Hockey2026 The Athletic Media Company0 التعليقات 0 المشاركات 1 مشاهدة 0 معاينة -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWill Howard struggles, throws two INTs in Steelers’ loss to JetsPITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA - AUGUST 21: Will Howard #18 of the Pittsburgh Steelers reacts during the second quarter against the New York Jets at Acrisure Stadium on August 21, 2026 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. (Photo by Joe Sargent/Getty Images) | Getty Images After a preseason opener featuring a duo of fantastic debuts at quarterback, the Pittsburgh Steelers saw their offense tumble back down to Earth in a 17-0 loss to the New York Jets in Week 2 of exhibition play. The leadup to the game was highlighted by the announcement that Will Howard would get the start, as head coach Mike McCarthy said he saw all he needed to see from Mason Rudolph and gave him the night off. Unfortunately, the Ohio State product did anything but impress. After a three and out and a four-play drive that ended with a punt, Howard tossed an interception directly to Jets safety Andre Cisco in the red zone. The interception killed what had been a 12-play drive. The next drive ended in similar fashion with Howard under-throwing a pass to Roman Wilson that was picked off by Samuel Womack. The former sixth-round pick’s day was done after the first half, finishing with 74 yards and a pair of interceptions on 10-of-15 passing. With a chance to potentially show he was worthy of being the backup to Aaron Rodgers, Howard, instead, may have played himself off the 53-man roster all together. Unfortunately, it wasn’t a picturesque night for Drew Allar, either, but for different reasons. The Steelers’ offensive line gave up constant pressure, allowing the third-round pick to get sacked three times. Allar did, however, avoid pressure and broke out to the left before launching a 38-yard pass down the sideline to Lake McRee for the longest play of the game for the Steelers. However, seven dropped passes and a lack of separation from the likes of Cornell Powell, Levi Wentz, Jaheim Bell, and Joaqin Davis led to an 11-of-23, 110-yard outing for Allar.Defensively, the first-team unit looked less than prepared. The Jets marched down the field to begin the game, driving 69 yards in 10 plays and ending the drive with a touchdown pass from Smith to Jelani Woods. On the pass, both Alex Highsmith and Patrick Queen crashed on Smith, leaving Woods wide open in the flat. Pittsburgh kept the Jets from reaching the end zone again until late in the fourth quarter when Quincy Skinner caught a 31-yard touchdown.Of course, in preseason, the final score isn’t important, it’s how individual players look that matters most, and Pittsburgh did have a few performances that stood out in a positive light. Defensive tackle Yahya Black got a big mit on a Geno Smith throw, batting it down at the line of scrimmage. DeShon Elliott forced a fumble on third down. And while it wasn’t recovered by the Steelers, it was good to see a healthy Elliott making plays. Carson Bruener had a tremendous sequence of plays, as well, batting down a Cade Klubnik pass and then sacking Klubnik with under a minute left in the first half. The return of No. 50 Elandon Roberts was also a highlight of the night for the defense, as he led the team with five tackles, one of which was for loss and other that came on fourth down and ended a Jets drive. Second-year edge rusher Jack Sawyer had a nice night, as well, picking up a sack and a pass deflection while rookie Robert-Spears Jennings and veteran Rayshawn Jenkins both looked good in pass coverage and crashing down in the run game, respectively.Offensively, both Howard and Allar had a few nice rips downfield. Howard connected with Ben Skowronek on a third-and-eight for a 16-yard gain and had a nice 12 yard completion to Robert Tonyan. Allar had the deep connection to McRee, as well as 15 and 17-yard shots to Isaiah Winstead. That’s about all the good to come from the offense, though. The pair of interceptions from Howard far outweigh the few completions that moved the chains, he offensive line was putrid in all four quarters, and none of the skill position players who were on the field for the majority of the second half are NFL-caliber players.Pittsburgh will close out its preseason next Thursday night in Buffalo against the Bills. Then comes the cut down to 53 players ahead of Week 1 against the Atlanta Falcons.Let us know what you think in the comments. رابطAPNEWS.COMRafael Devers returns to Fenway, but not interested in revisiting icy end to Red Sox tenureSan Francisco Giants' Rafael Devers reacts to being back at Fenway Park before a baseball game against the Boston Red Sox, Friday, Aug. 21, 2026, in Boston. (AP Photo/Greg M. Cooper)2026-08-21T22:23:54Z BOSTON (AP) — With a haze of clouds and a light rain falling overhead, Rafael Devers emerged from the visitors’ dugout at Fenway Park for the first time on Friday afternoon. After taking a few minutes to sign autographs for fans wearing his San Francisco Giants jersey, and others donned in that of the Boston Red Sox team he wore for eight-plus years prior to his blockbuster trade 14 months ago, Devers said his memories of his time in Boston flowed when he arrived at the ballpark. But so did his desire not to revisit the up-and-down tenure with his former team. “I don’t want to think about the past, I don’t want to talk about the past,” Devers said through an interpreter before the Giants’ matchup with the Red Sox. “But at the same time, we’re all men, we’re all grownups and you have to understand that this is the business of baseball. But at the same time, you make mistakes and you have to move on and mature.” It’s a far cry from the icy way his tenure ended last June with the Red Sox team he helped win the 2018 World Series with ended. Devers’ relationship with the franchise began to sour in February 2025 when the team signed Gold Glove third baseman Alex Bregman during spring training and asked Devers to move to DH; he balked before agreeing to the switch. But when first baseman Triston Casas later sustained a season-ending knee injury, the Red Sox approached Devers about playing the field and he declined, saying the front office “should do their jobs” and look for another player. It came to a head when the Red Sox traded the three-time All-Star to the Giants less than two years after signing Devers to a 10-year, $313.5 million contract. Read More Boston received a small haul in exchange in right-hander Jordan Hicks, lefty Kyle Harrison, outfield prospect James Tibbs III and minor league righty Jose Bello. It was a move, though, that Red Sox president Sam Kennedy said the front office deemed necessary. “We worked at it. We had a different vision for him going forward than he had, and we couldn’t get there. We couldn’t find alignment,” Kennedy said at the time. “And we reached that inflection point and made the decision to make a big move.” A little over a year later Boston has gone through even more of an upheaval that included Bregman leaving in free agency and the firing of former manager Alex Cora in April following a 10-17 start.Since then, the Red Sox have caught fire and have climbed back firmly into postseason position with a 15-game winning streak and MLB-best 22-11 mark since the All-Star break. Meanwhile, San Francisco has struggled, entering Boston with a 52-75 record. Devers is leading the team with 25 home runs and 31 RBIs but also has a team-high 141 strikeouts. Ironically, Devers has been playing a lot of first base this season, though he did have a notable dustup with Giants manager Tony Vitello in June when he initially brushed off a pinch runner and then angrily headed into the dugout. That aside, Devers said he is finding a home with the Giants. “I can’t compare (the two teams),” Devers said. “The only thing I can say is that is my team, I’ve very comfortable, they have supported me, they have trusted. I’m just hoping to continue doing well for them.”He said he has no regrets about how his time in Boston came to an end. “I feel really good. It’s been a year. I think I have matured there in a year,” Devers said. “I think I have learned as an athlete there are things that are going to happen. What you have to do is move forward and learn from that.” ___See AP’s full MLB coverage here KYLE HIGHTOWER Hightower covers Boston sports for The Associated Press and also contributes on coverage of sports gambling and Olympic basketball. twitter mailto0 التعليقات 0 المشاركات 2 مشاهدة 0 معاينة
