COLLEGE STATION - For the first time in program history, Texas A&M will enter a season coming off a College Football Playoff appearance.Now, the Aggies are trying to make it two in a row.That comes with a different kind of pressure. After an 11-win season and the program's first CFP appearance, A&M is no longer trying to prove it can break through under coach Mike Elko. The standard has changed, and once again the Aggies will have to make a case to the selection committee for why they deserve a spot in the playoff.To get back, A&M will need a strong résumé, better results against the SEC's best and a team capable of avoiding the kind of loss that can derail a playoff push.Here are five things that need to happen for Texas A&M to return to the CFP:Make the résumé strongerThe 10-3 loss to Miami in last year's first round left A&M with a sour ending to its best season in more than a decade, but it also left the Aggies with something to prove. The selection committee considers strength of schedule, head-to-head results and results against common opponents when comparing teams, giving A&M plenty of opportunities to strengthen its case.LSU, Alabama, South Carolina and Oklahoma are all on the road, while Tennessee and Texas will visit Kyle Field. A&M does not need to win every marquee matchup, but stacking victories against teams competing for the SEC title would make its résumé difficult to dismiss.Last season got the Aggies into the playoff. This season is about building a résumé that leaves little debate about whether they belong. Texas A&M made its first College Football Playoff appearance in 2025, but the road to get back this year will be harder. Reed needs to become more consistent and establish himself as one of the conference's best quarterbacks, starting with Missouri State, Arizona State and Kentucky before the schedule intensifies.A more efficient Reed would not only raise A&M's ceiling but also give the Aggies a better chance to pile up the wins the committee will ultimately evaluate.Make home-field advantage countThere is a reason Texas A&M calls its home crowd the 12th Man, but the Aggies have suffered some painful losses at Kyle Field in recent seasons. Notre Dame won the 2024 season opener in College Station, Texas won there later that year, and Miami ended A&M's season on its home field in last year's playoff.This season, Tennessee and Texas will visit Kyle Field, giving the Aggies two significant opportunities to add quality wins to their résumé without leaving College Station. The committee evaluates teams based on their performance throughout the season, meaning A&M cannot afford to overlook the games it is expected to win while waiting for the big matchups.The Aggies have Arkansas, Kentucky and The Citadel on the schedule in addition to their more challenging SEC games, and a loss to a team outside the playoff conversation could become a major problem when the committee compares teams with similar records.That puts pressure on A&M's defense, particularly with Elko and new defensive coordinator Lyle Hemphill expected to turn a talented group into a consistent strength. Ravichandran Ashwin believes Rishabh Pant needs to show greater awareness of match situations and take more responsibility with the bat, despite the wicketkeeper-batter putting together a respectable series against Sri Lanka.Pant finished the two-Test series with 168 runs and two half-centuries. However, Ashwin feels the numbers do not tell the complete story and wants the India batter to exercise more judgement when deciding how to attack.Pant's aggressive approach has come under scrutiny over the past few months, with questions being raised about whether he sometimes takes unnecessary risks and fails to put enough value on his wicket.The former India spinner pointed to Pant's dismissal against South Africa in Guwahati last year as an example. While captaining India in the absence of Shubman Gill, Pant charged down the track against Marco Jansen and edged the delivery to the wicketkeeper.Pant is currently a Test-only player for India after falling out of favour in the white-ball formats. Ashwin believes his decision-making in Test cricket remains an area that needs attention.“My expectation from Rishabh Pant hasn't been fulfilled till now. I am very sorry. Sonal Dinusha had his strike rate up there. But the difference is high-risk options. When you have the game in your hand, these are all statements: ‘That’s how Rishabh plays.' He didn't make the cut last year, was eventually signed to the practice squad, and was with the organization during their Super Bowl LX run to earn himself a ring. Foster caught the only touchdown in the week one loss to Dallas, and he very nearly had another against Tennessee. He's also coming up big in the run game, laying out serious blocks, including one to pave the way for Jacardia Wright's 69-yard touchdown scamper. He is another 'Hard Knocks' star this summer, but with good reason. Given the tragic injury to Jake Bobo, Foster has a real shot to slide into the No. 4 role that is wide open for the taking."2026 Seahawks season prediction: Can Seattle get back to the Super Bowl this year?"They absolutely can get back. Like I said in the first paragraph, this team is as good as any champion I've seen in terms of repeat capability. The 2026 Seahawks were the most dominant Super Bowl champions since… the 2013 Seahawks. Will they have some slight regression? Probably, considering they just had their best season in franchise history. Those kinds of seasons typically don't get 'improved' upon the next year. But they're loaded, and their backups were bullying Tennessee's starters last week. It will be difficult, especially since they share a division with the Rams. However, they are also the most 'under the radar' champs we've ever seen! No one believed in them last year, and it seems to be the case this year as well. Inglewood DL Myels Smith Smith is the fourth-ranked defensive lineman prospect in the 2027 recruiting class, according to 247Sports' composite ratings, and poses the biggest threat to Westlake. The 6-foot-3, 295-pound Texas A&M commit is incredibly disruptive - he recorded 30 tackles for loss as a junior - and his presence allows his teammates to thrive.Westlake's offensive line will have its hands full between handling Smith and the rest of the threats on Inglewood's defense, which had seven sacks in last week's season-opening win. As others rushed to help the victims, a second drone struck, the group said.The group said in a statement posted on Facebook that targeting civilians and then attacking again while they were being rescued amounts to a violation of international humanitarian law and is a war crime. The federal agency said it is still determining the cause of the failure.The board found that the contractor provided Nippon Dynawave Packaging Company with recommendations for internal inspections and shell repairs, but the company did none between a July 2025 inspection and the May 2026 failure.An email seeking comment was sent to Nippon Dynawave. A person who answered the phone at Nippon’s plant in Longview declined to comment, and a message was left seeking comment. In July 2025, the contractor found “significant thinning” below the minimum safe thickness in the lower regions of the tank after an external inspection, according to the board’s report. The minimum safe thickness is a threshold that measures a tank’s ability to contain the pressure of the liquid and support the tank’s weight, the report said.The same contractor inspected the exterior of the tank in October 2025 and February 2026 and both times identified that “large portions of the tank remained thinner than the calculated minimum safe wall thickness.” “The company also did not remove the tank from operation or derate the tank for reduced service,” the board said. In addition to the workers killed, several others and one firefighter were injured.In an excerpt of the July 2025 inspection included in the board’s update, the recommendations were noted as “Priority 1: Not fit for continued service unless corrected,” with a “high likelihood/consequence of failure (or) critical code/standard deficiency.” “Owner should plan to have an internal inspection performed in order to determine the extent of the required repairs. In the mechanical maintenance shop, five employees and the foreman escaped, but two were killed from exposure to the chemical, the report said. Two of the people who escaped were seriously injured due to chemical burns. The company radioed for its medical emergency response team but didn’t explain that white liquor had been released, according to the report. A member of the team waded into a pool of white liquor to try to rescue an employee, thinking it was water, and was seriously injured from chemical burns.Earlier this week, the Washington Department of Ecology issued notice of 35 environmental violations to Nippon Dynawave. A Jamaican man was repatriated to his home country in September, while a Cambodian man was released in March for repatriation after spending five months detained in a maximum-security prison. Titled “Universal Oneness Celebration,” the event is being organized by American Hindus for Engagement and Dialogue.Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has been a polarizing figure in that country and the diaspora, emerged from the group known as RSS, a right-wing paramilitary group founded a century ago. Critics have accused the group of promoting the political ideology of Hindutva, which means “the essence of being Hindu,” and seeks to define Indian culture and national identity in terms of Hindu values. The Las Vegas Raiders’ preseason is over. Following an 18-12 loss to the San Francisco 49ers, Klint Kubiak and his crew can now focus on Week 1, which is just two weeks away. There’s only one problem there … the team still hasn’t named a starting quarterback.Kubiak wasn’t willing to make that call following Thursday’s game, telling reporters he wanted to watch the tape and then make his decision, per ESPN."I still don't think we need to name anybody," Kubiak said after Las Vegas' 18-12 loss at Allegiant Stadium. "We have a lot to talk about at a lot of positions, so we want to watch the film and talk about everything as a staff."While Kubiak spent the entire offseason hinting at going with a veteran over No. 1 overall pick Fernando Mendoza, the rookie showed some fight in the team’s first two preseason games. Those performances had some wondering whether Mendoza was ahead of schedule, and could be named the team’s starter for the regular season.But Week 3 of the preseason threw some cold water on that idea. Mendoza struggled during the contest, while veteran Kirk Cousins led the team on two scoring drives.With the Raiders’ preseason officially over, Cousins has the statistical edge to claim the starting role.Kubiak wasn’t ready to make that call yet, but that didn’t bother Cousins, per ESPN."Naming something one day could change the next," Cousins said. "You just go about your business each day, methodically, and let the chips fall where they may."The decision should happen soon. With a little over two weeks left until the regular season, the Raiders need to start looking ahead. Ty Simpson started at quarterback for the Rams on Thursday night and Stetson Bennett did not play, but head coach Sean McVay said after the game that those decisions had nothing to do with which of them will be the No. 2 quarterback to start the regular season. McVay said the call was made as part of the process of "continuing to get [Simpson] experience" heading into his rookie season and that the team isn't ready to name either player as the primary backup to Matthew Stafford. "Obviously, we've got the reigning MVP of the league, and then we got two guys that we feel really good about," McVay said, via the team's website. "And if you say, 'hey, what does that really mean?' That's what it means. We feel really good about those two guys. Not pigeon-holing myself into any sort of decision other than I feel really good about Stetson Bennett, feel really good about Ty Simpson."The Rams play their opener against the 49ers in Australia in two weeks, so a decision will be coming in the near future.

A Scottish Football Association disciplinary hearing also ruled that any repeat of crowd trouble in the Scottish Cup in the next two seasons would result in another closed-door punishment. Both Rangers and Celtic admitted the charges by the SFA with failing to prevent “unacceptable conduct” and faced a disciplinary hearing at Hampden on 13 August. “We are shocked by this disproportionate punishment for a relatively small incursion by Celtic supporters at a moment of emotion and celebration,” a statement from Celtic said. “Our club has never defended supporters entering the field of play and we have repeatedly taken action when it occur.“However, we understand the part emotion plays in football and would have expected the context and distinction in behaviours to have been taken into account by the panel.“Another important distinction is that, on this occasion, Celtic were not the home club, responsible for stadium safety arrangements.“We will study the panel’s report and reasoning when it is available and will thereafter consider our next steps.” Rangers have yet to comment. NORTH KINGSTOWN – Three Maher sisters were finally together again on the pitch Thursday night, and the youngest had herself quite a Cumberland girls soccer debut. Shea Maher scored two goals inside the final five minutes to decide this Division I clash of contenders against North Kingstown. The Clippers left Perry Athletic Complex with all three points thanks to a talented newcomer. Maher found the net in the 75th minute and converted a penalty kick soon after to push Cumberland over the top. The Skippers had no time to respond in a 2-0 opening defeat, a match that's been seemingly inevitable in November's playoffs multiple times in recent seasons. She added some insurance from the spot just moments later, drilling a right-footed shot into the lower left corner. "It's so cool," Maher said. "We used to play together when we were younger. Now that we're all grown up we have great chemistry." Shea Maher was the choice to take it and calmly converted like someone with considerably more seasoning. His election marked the party’s return to power in the region after a decade. His rival, Mukhtar Ahmed Abbasi of the former ruling Pakistan People’s Party, received 14 votes.It comes after candidates backed by the party of former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif won a commanding lead in legislative elections held in phases because of security concerns. The elections followed a boycott call by the outlawed Joint Awami Action Committee, or JAAC, which urged residents not to participate and is still holding rallies. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has congratulated Gillani over being elected premier in Kashmir, which is divided between Pakistan and India. Both countries claim the Himalayan region in its entirety. The two countries have fought three wars since gaining independence from British colonial rule in 1947, two of them over Kashmir. The election was overshadowed by months of protests led by JAAC, which was recently banned by the regional government, which cited security and public-order concerns.

Portland Trail Blazers guard Shaedon Sharpe will be sidelined for at least six months after surgery to repair a lateral meniscus tear in his right knee, the team announced Thursday. Sharpe was injured last week during a workout and had surgery Monday in Los Angeles.The 6-foot-5 shooting guard averaged 20.8 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.6 assists in 50 games last season with Portland, but missed time because of a stress reaction in his left fibula. Sharpe, 23, was the seventh overall pick in the 2022 draft by the Blazers. Over his four years with Portland, he has averaged 15.7 points, with four rebounds and 2.2 assists per game. Last October he agreed to a four-year, $90 million contract extension. The Blazers said Sharpe would be reevaluated in six months.

On a given night, you may find artist and former Poet Laureate of Oregon Anis Mojgani reciting poetry out of his studio window in Portland’s Sunnyside neighborhood for an audience of up to 300 people. People begin gathering outside his studio around 30 minutes before the poetry starts at sunset. If you’re lucky, you saw his handmade poster announcing the event hanging on the exterior door of the building, or caught his Instagram announcement he posted a day or two before the event. “Poems at Sunset Out a Window,” it reads. “B.Y.O.C!” it says, meaning “bring your own chair.” The crowd sets up along the sidewalk beneath the window into the street and across to the opposite curb, stretching all the way to the fence of Sunnyside Environmental School’s playground. For Oregon’s 10th Poet Laureate Anis Mojgani, every poem is asking to be said aloud.This unsanctioned gathering began during 2021, after one of Mojgani’s friends, Jen, knocked on his studio window. “It’s just like a funny window because it slides open and it just feels like, kind of like a weird sandwich window, you know? ‘Like, what do you want on your sandwich?’ And we just hung out through the window talking, and we were both like, oh, this is so much fun, we should do this more, we should be more people.” He made a flier for two nights later and posted it on Instagram, inviting folks to come sit and listen to poems being read from a window. That first time, around 50 to 60 folks showed up and brought their own chairs. These days his crowds are much bigger. As he recites poems out the window, the audience below expands with passersby who happen to stumble upon the scene. Mojgani delivers each poem with exuberance and a rhythmic cadence, transforming the reading into an immersive performance. Sometimes he wonders, “Are the cops gonna show up? Is somebody going to start yelling? What’s that bird doing?” There’s a swarm of different things that could happen when you are in public spaces. But what he enjoys the most about speaking his poems out loud is when something unexpected happens: “That’s always just like a nice sweetness or a surprise when there’s just something unexpected that shows up. You know?” This evening, a man dressed in a cape with the head of a hamburger walks back and forth through the audience. After one of his poems, Mojgani yells out, “The burger!” The crowd laughs. A child at play on the school grounds across the street screams back, “I need to see this burger!” Mojgani yells, “We all need to see this burger!” The crowd laughs even harder.He approaches each reading without expectations, allowing the performance to unfold differently each time. “Here’s this box that I made, and I’m gonna put it on the stage, and I’m gonna turn it on. And even though I made it and I’m familiar with the sounds that might be coming out of it, I’m here in this moment like you are, and I don’t know what’s gonna happen. Maybe the barometric pressure is different today, and that affects the box. Maybe I got a call from my mom just before, and that affects the box—or rather, affects everything around the box.” For him, that sense of discovery is central to the experience, not only for the audience but for himself. “Every poem, I think, is asking to be said aloud.”Between poems, Mojgani talks to the crowd and his enthusiasm spills over into jokes, stories, political reflections, observations about whatever is unfolding around them, all the while beaming with what can’t be described other than care and love for his audience. In return, they wear permanent smiles, basking in his warmth throughout the reading.“This city is so fantastic. It’s like a, it’s like a goddamn paradise here, you know, like the sun was just like beaming. There’s days in Portland where the sun arrives so perfectly and the air arrives so perfectly you know. He gushes over the city, its beauty, its nature, people and all it offers. “I love that, you know, Portland, to me, feels like a city that means greenness, you know? That it’s so rife with, depending on the season, blossoms and petals and leaves and green and birds and, and so it’s just really, really beautiful and lush.” He works and lives in the Sunnyside neighborhood. “I love its walkability. Walkability in that I want to walk through it. I get to live blocks from friends that I see every day. I live five blocks from my studio. My bookshop and my coffee shops are also walkable. It’s an eight-minute walk to my library. I love that I get to live in a village.”Born and raised in New Orleans, Mojgani studied visual art, with a focus on comic book illustration at Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia. While there, he also developed a passion for painting and writing poetry, particularly performing and sharing poetry aloud.After graduating, he moved to New York City and joined the spoken-word poetry scene. He traveled across the country, performing and competing in slam poetry competitions. He became a two-time National Poetry Slam champion and a winner of the World Cup of Poetry Slam.In 2020, Mojgani became the 10th poet laureate of Oregon, serving two consecutive terms. “I live in a state where I’ve been woven into its fabric as a poet laureate. And as a poet laureate of African and Middle Eastern descent in a state that has so many challenges and so many racial reckonings. And yet I get to be myself, and I get to be an Oregonian, you know, and that feels good.”He embraced his two-term role by fostering, developing and supporting Oregonians in the conversation of poetry, and finding creative ways to make that happen. ”Poems are all around us, whether we know it or not. Up close, Stanfield’s Bumble B Estates looks like any suburban subdivision.Uniform rows of single-family homes are arranged around a looping road, the asphalt and concrete broken up by shocks of green manicured lawns. But zoom out a little bit and Stanfield’s rural roots come into view. One of Bumble B’s closest neighbors is a corn field. Further down Highway 395, a traffic signal manages Stanfield’s only intersection. State Sen. Todd Nash said Bumble B and Stanfield — a small subdivision in a town of a couple thousand people — are models of what housing development in rural Eastern Oregon should look like. He’s now bringing fellow lawmakers here in hopes of convincing them to loosen Oregon’s longstanding land use laws. “I wanted to get legislators out here to see on the ground kind of what we’re up against,” Nash, the Republican from Enterprise, said. “This project right here in Stanfield was one of the inspirations.” Oregon’s land use laws have long protected rural areas from housing developments. For decades, housing growth was sluggish. But new developments like Bumble B are starting to pop up around the region due to high demand. In fact, much of Eastern Oregon is now in the midst of a growing housing crisis. Nash’s effort is at the center of an ongoing debate over how much the state’s land use laws should be altered to accommodate home builders. Land versus infrastructure Todd Nash made a run at changing rural housing earlier this year. Nash was a chief sponsor of Senate Bill 1578, which would have tweaked Oregon’s land use laws to allow for more housing to be built on the outskirts of rural communities. In 1973, the Oregon Legislature created urban growth boundaries, a system that limits outward expansion unless communities fill in enough of their existing space with homes and businesses. Nash’s bill would have allowed rural counties to rezone up to 50 acres for residential dwellings outside of their communities’ urban growth boundaries and ease the process to put accessory dwelling units on farmland. Lawmakers created Oregon’s land use system in part to protect agricultural land, but Nash, a rancher by trade, said some farmland has gone fallow and unused.“In Eastern Oregon, we’re blessed with some of the best farmland in Oregon. We have some really productive land here in Morrow and Umatilla County that’s under irrigation,” he said. “We also have some very compromised land that is a better value putting houses into.” While the bill had bipartisan support, it also drew a fair amount of opposition. Representatives from 1000 Friends of Oregon, a nonprofit that supports Oregon’s land use system, opposed the bill, arguing that it didn’t do enough to protect forests and agricultural lands. The legislation also drew measured opposition from the Oregon Farm Bureau, which was concerned that new housing might come into conflict with productive farmland.The bill didn’t advance out of committee before the session adjourned. 1000 Friends associate director Mary Kyle McCurdy said in an interview that many rural communities aren’t struggling because of a lack of land, but because of a lack of investment. “We know our rural and smaller communities need more housing, she said. “They need more investment in infrastructure, in workforce development, in order for that housing to be built.” After the bill failed, Nash joined a working group focused on rural housing. Nash said the tour of towns like Arlington, Stanfield and Pendleton was meant to inform that ongoing discussion so that planning decisions were put into the hands of local commissioners.“I really like decisions to be made locally,” he said. “Not by 1000 Friends, not by the state legislature. Development challenges in Eastern Oregon Stanfield real estate gets snapped up fast, City Manager Darla Linker said.“If you watch Zillow or Realtor.com, if there’s something on the listing in Stanfield that lasts more than two weeks you’re kind of wondering what’s wrong with the property,” she said. Linker said Bumble B has been a great addition to town, its affordability attracting both young families and retirees looking to downsize. But more housing developments like Bumble B might be a tough proposition for Stanfield. “Infrastructure, I would say, is the biggest hurdle because it’s so expensive and there’s not a lot of available affordable funding for that type of expansion,” she said. Cities across the state are racing to build more housing and grappling with rising construction costs. But there are unique issues affecting rural areas, said Angie Sullivan, a partner at LandWise, a land development consulting company that specializes in workforce housing in the inland Northwest. She said developers need to consider if a rural community’s public infrastructure can support new development. Hiring contractors and subcontractors for rural construction often involves looking out of town since many local tradesmen have retired or moved to larger communities. “There’s a whole lot to this ragu,” she said. LandWise worked on the Stanfield project, and Sullivan said it took about a year to find a home builder for it. Rising interest rates and inflation had spurred the landowner to subdivide the project into smaller lots, which scared off many builders that wanted to construct bigger homes. Business has been swift, though, since construction on the 99-lot Bumble B subdivision began in 2023. Sullivan said the lots are quickly selling even as construction crews build out the final set of homes. Despite the challenges, Sullivan is bullish on Eastern Oregon’s future, predicting more housing development in the next 5 to 10 years.“There’s a little bit of a buzz going around here in northeast Oregon that isn’t happening in other places of the state,” she said. “We’re pretty fortunate here that we’ve got a lot of good stuff happening.
