Nearly 90% of 196 public comments received earlier this year opposed the road.“Alaska’s public lands and transportation systems exist to serve Alaskans — not to subsidize private industrial expansion at public expense,” wrote Juneau resident Brooks Horan.The private non-exclusive easement includes a 15-foot-wide gravel road and two one-acre helicopter pads on state land off Glacier Highway. The road will stretch for approximately 1.3 miles between the Herbert Glacier and Eagle Glacier trail and does not directly intersect any of the existing recreation trails. For this reason, the state acknowledges that while the road and staging areas will impact recreation in the area, it “does not agree that the wild and scenic nature of the area will be irreversibly damaged by approving this easement.” “This is a small total footprint within the entire Eagle-Herbert River valley. Due to the non-exclusivity of the easement, public access will not be restricted within the area, therefore even though the experience may change, the public will still be able to recreate within the corridor,” the state’s public notice issued last Tuesday states.In July, local conservation nonprofits gathered community members concerned about the road and proposed mining project. Attendee Riley Moser said even though public access will not be restricted, it would be severely disrupted by safety hazards and noise. Among other attendee reasons for opposition were that profits from the mine benefit a private, foreign corporation and its investors. Also, if the mining project is approved it will provide indirect economic benefits to the state through municipal property tax revenues, more business for local vendors, and job opportunities in the construction, mining and industry sectors. A company representative said earlier this year the mine is expected to create 277 jobs and a pre-tax net present value of nearly $1 billion during an initial seven-year production cycle. He added the local jobs offered by both would be excellent and long-term.The easement application was first submitted last August and public notice took place from February to March. The road was approved Aug. 18 and will provide Grand Portage access for the unapproved New Amalga Gold Project near the face of Herbert Glacier on U.S. Forest Service land.Public comments also included concerns about noise and visual impacts associated with construction, heavy equipment use, helicopter operations, ore hauling, and potential future blasting if mineral extraction occurs. If the project moves forward, the road will lead to an approximate 30-acre surface facilities site, which is expected to host equipment shops, electrical generation, water treatment plants, ore sorting facilities and temporary rock staging pads.The state intends to authorize the requested road in two phases.The first phase authorizes the immediate development of the 0.17-mile segment of road closest to Glacier Highway and the first one-acre helicopter staging area. The second phase authorizes the development of the remaining 1.13-mile road segment and staging area, once Grand Portage receives Forest Service approval to begin mineral extraction production.The Alaska Division of Mining, Land and Water says the phased approach is a mitigation measure that enables better-controlled construction of the easement and ensures “it will serve its purpose and not unnecessarily disrupt the recreational area.” “Although recreation is not the primary reason DMLW is implementing a phased approach, it does potentially lessen any negative impacts to recreation should the mining project not be approved on the adjoining federal lands.” The decision follows the approval of a faster federal permitting process earlier this month, which officials said doesn’t mean the New Amalga Gold Project can skip any regulatory steps or is more likely to gain approval.Grand Portage applied for an easement term of 35 years. DMLW issues it for 25 years, stating it’s the standard term length.“This will allow the state to better manage and re-evaluate the easement at a sooner date, while still providing the applicant with a long-term authorization,” the notice states. A driveway or approach road permit for the turnout from Glacier Highway is expected to be obtained from the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities before development.Grand Portage stated since the mining project is currently only accessible via helicopter, the road development and staging areas will reduce the distance of supply shuttles and reduce noise impacts to residential areas in the Mendenhall Valley. “The helicopter shuttle distance for slinging equipment and supplies will be reduced by approximately 60% for each cycle compared to the previous staging area located in the Juneau Mendenhall Valley suburbs,” a company press release on Aug. 20 states.The state received comments claiming authorization was not in the public interest because of conflicts with existing land uses and the state’s responsibility to manage resources for multiple use.“Under the State’s multiple-use mandate, long-term land stewardship does not mean restricting state land to preservation-only uses; it requires balancing environmental, recreational, economic, and access needs in a way that serves the broader public interest,” the state’s approval responds. “In this case, the proposed use, supporting mineral exploration and potential resource development, is a recognized, allowable use of state land.”And since mining is an allowable designated use “it is reasonable to infer that development of mining roads, staging areas, and similar support infrastructure are an allowable designated use as well,” according to the state’s approval. In addition, DMLW states public road access would conflict with the easement’s purpose, and allowing unrestricted vehicular access along the easement “would inevitably pose unnecessary hazards and safety risks.”It adds that existing public access to state-owned land in the area of the proposed easement will remain open, although the applicant will be allowed to install a gate at the easement’s entrance to control vehicular access along the roadway for safety measures. A chain-link fence will be installed around the perimeter of each staging area, as well as solar-powered security cameras.No public comments are being sought on the public notice, but appeals are accepted until Sept. 7.DMLW states it has considered the fish and wildlife habitat in the easement, and will require a 300-foot-wide buffer along anadromous streams as a mitigation measure. It adds the easement agreement includes terms Grand Portage must follow to minimize the potential for spills and pollution, and a required Environmental Assessment report at the end of the easement term. “Although contamination incidents from mining operations have occurred in the past, that does not mean it will happen in this instance,” the state’s approval says. “We cannot deny an authorization on the basis that contamination may occur, especially when proper containment and mitigation measures are in place.”The future facilities at the proposed mining site are envisioned to include a selective underground mining operation, but are not planned to include an ore processing plant or tailings disposal landfill. Due to the resource location near tidewater and less than four miles from existing paved highway, Grand Portage plans to utilize off-site processing by a third party, according to the company.The road approval comes after the company reached the midpoint of this year’s drilling program at the New Amalga Gold Project, according to a company press release on Aug. 13. Crews have completed five of 12 planned drillholes, totaling 1,605 meters out of 3,255 planned, as of Aug 9. Large amounts of critical data have been collected on hydrogeological and geotechnical conditions in key areas of the deposit, along with additional resource definition, according to the release. The company states the rock mass data will be utilized for the upcoming environmental review and permitting process and will inform mine development plans. Construction has advanced past drilling for the development of environmental monitoring infrastructure, including the installation of a river-monitoring gauge station and completion of concrete works for the foundation of the first of two planned meteorological towers. The second tower erection is planned for this September. Trump used the occasion to announce the creation of a U.S. Space Academy for the Space Force as well as NASA and the commercial space community. “Space is the hot thing,” the president told the crowd, adding that the academy’s location has yet to be determined.Commander Reid Wiseman, pilot Victor Glover, Christina Koch and Canada’s Jeremy Hansen became the first astronauts to travel to the moon in more than half a century, coming within 4,067 miles (6,545 kilometers) while test-driving NASA’s new Orion capsule. They were the first to launch aboard NASA’s new moon rocket, a 30-story behemoth that had soared only once before from Florida’s Kennedy Space Center. While they didn’t stop at the moon, the four set the stage for next year’s Artemis III docking rehearsal in orbit around Earth. The government told the authors to use the definition under the United Nations’ 1948 genocide convention, which includes “imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group.”The reports come as U.S. President Donald Trump pushes to control the Arctic island, which is a self-governing territory of Denmark. The leaders of Greenland and Denmark say the island is not for sale and only Greenlanders can decide their fate. Known as the “spiral case, " the revelations have rocked both Denmark and Greenland. More than 350 Greenlandic Indigenous women and girls, including some 12 years old and younger, previously came forward to investigators and reported that they were forcibly given contraception by Danish health authorities. Denmark says more than 4,000 women and girls — reportedly half the fertile women in Greenland at the time — received IUDs between the 1960s and mid-1970s.The Inuit victims, many of them teenagers at the time, said they were either fitted with intrauterine contraceptive devices, known as IUDs or coils, or given a hormonal birth control injection. They were not told details about the procedure, or did not give their consent. The alleged purpose was to limit population growth in Greenland by preventing pregnancies. Her mother reassured her that wasn’t the case — and instead of being embittered by the encounter, the young Levine began attending a Catholic catechism class to learn more about her Christian neighbors and their beliefs.That blossomed into a decades-long academic career in an unusual role — a Jewish scholar of Christian Scriptures. Levine has worked to improve how Christians and her fellow Jews understand each other. She’s spoken at many churches and taught students about the ancient Jewish context of Jesus’ life and teachings. She’s authored numerous books, some in tandem with Christian scholars; she and a co-author even presented one book personally to Pope Francis. But after the Catholic Biblical Association of America announced earlier this month that Levine was elected its first-ever Jewish president, an antisemitic backlash began.Denunciations appeared in the posts and replies on social media accounts with tens of thousands of followers. Critics called her “anti-Christian,” claimed she’s trying to hijack Catholicism, denounced Jews for not accepting Jesus, and tacked on anti-Zionist comments.While some questioned why the association would appoint anyone who wasn’t a Catholic, much of the criticism was infused with anti-Jewish statements. They come at a time of rising antisemitism in the country. Supporters hail her scholarship and role in Catholic-Jewish dialogueHer supporters and longtime Christian collaborators are appalled by the backlash.“Unfortunately, some neither understand the role of the president nor the nature of a professional society,” said a joint statement by the association’s executive board chair, Gregory E. Sterling, and executive director, Archie Wright. “She was not elected because she is Jewish, but because she is an exceptional scholar and has played a very important role in Catholic-Jewish dialogue.”The association is made up of Catholic and non-Catholic scholars with the stated purpose of improving the study of the Bible within the context of faith. Levine has been active in the association for decades, though she said when someone from its nominating committee asked her to consider being president, she wasn’t sure at first if it was serious. Levine, an adherent of Orthodox Judaism, said that although she doesn’t accept the Christian belief that Jesus is divine, she admires him as an early rabbinic teacher and believes Christians and Jews can learn much from each other.“Hate and demonizing, name calling and slandering, are not good forms of evangelism,” Levine said on her Facebook page. “And now, ironically again, I have to explain that these nasty posts are not indicative of the best of the Church.”She noted that she often defends the Catholic Church from bigoted statements against it. Strong Catholic denunciations of antisemitism “My historical work shows that we do not need to make Judaism look bad in order to make Jesus look good,” she said.She noted, for example, that there are common stereotypes that Jesus was introducing grace and acceptance against a rigid Jewish notion of law and purity. In fact, Levine told The Associated Press, the Bible shows that Jesus affirms Jewish law and “restores people to states of purity.”Levine said the gospel stories would have resonated strongly with ancient Jewish readers. For example, the stories of Jesus’ miracles echo those of ancient Israelite prophets. His escape from a murderous tyrant as an infant is similar to that of Moses. When Jesus said the greatest commandments are to love God and neighbor, he was quoting from the Torah rather than inventing something new, she said.People embrace antisemitic views for various reasons, Levine said: “what they heard from their parents or friends, what they read on the internet, the conflating of certain Israeli policies with the views of all Jews, and what they hear in churches, whether problematic readings from the New Testament or sermons that introduce or reinforce, often because of ignorance and tone-deafness, antisemitic messages.” While Catholicism has had a historic legacy of antisemitism, the Vatican has repeatedly denounced it in the post-Holocaust decades. The reformist Second Vatican Council of the 1960s affirmed the shared “patrimony” of Christians and Jews. It said the death of Jesus cannot be blamed on “all the Jews, without distinction.”St. John Paul II, the longtime pope, prioritized reconciliation with Jews, saying antisemitism “has no justification and is absolutely reprehensible.” ‘She loves Christian people and she loves the Bible’ Levine is a professor emerita in New Testament and Jewish studies at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. She now teaches part-time at the Hartford International University for Religion and Peace in Connecticut.She said her role as Catholic Biblical Association president will include promoting excellence in biblical studies and supporting scholars and their research and publications.She wants to continue speaking in parishes and to work with Catholic bishops “to help ensure that textbooks used in parochial schools, catechesis, and preaching do not promote antisemitic messages, to promote better Jewish-Catholic relations, and to promote the work of the CBA.”Levine’s admirers include Protestant as well as Catholic scholars.Professor Ben Witherington III, a New Testament expert at Asbury Theological Seminary in Kentucky, co-authored a commentary on the Gospel of Luke with Levine, believed to be the only Gospel commentary jointly written by evangelical and Jewish authors.“She is profoundly loved by all kinds of Protestant and Catholic folks,” he said.He said Levine regularly put her faith into action, including teaching Bible classes at a Nashville prison.“She loves Christian people and she loves the Bible,” Witherington said. “What she doesn’t love is people using the Bible to beat other people over the head, including Jews. Thirty-three bus lines and one MAX line will be impacted, either by eliminating lines, combining them, or changing their routes.One of the largest changes will come to the MAX Green Line. The line currently runs from Clackamas Town Center to Portland State University. Turner closed the gap to as much as half a second in the opening three laps as the two riders separated from the crowd, but at the race hit the midway point, it became obvious that this race would be different than many that preceded it.Cannon has said repeatedly that she needs to work on her aggression and she stretched her advantage to 1.5 seconds at the midway point.After the race, Cannon told NBC Sports, "I wasn't surprised because that's what I'm capable of in practice, but it felt good to do it in race conditions. I just have to repeat it tomorrow."Turner was forced to react to Cannon's speed, and she nearly crashed on Lap 5. She survived that incident and remained second, but while trying to make up a more sizeable gap of more than 15 seconds, she crashed one lap later and fell to sixth.Turner regained one position, but finished a distant fifth.Making her WMX debut with Wildcat Racing, Spanish rider Daniella Guillen finished second. It might be time that we inform the teams in the AL West that one of them is, in fact, allowed to win the division.As August comes to a close, neither the Houston Astros, the Texas Rangers nor the Seattle Mariners look all that interested in running away with a very winnable division. How bad has it been in the AL West this season?All five teams in the division are currently .500 or worse, with the first-place Astros sitting at 67-67 entering play Friday. All five teams also currently have negative run differentials. The Astros, Rangers and Mariners are a combined -148.Looking at it another way, three of the five teams have fired their general managers this season, including the Astros firing GM Dana Brown on Monday. The Angels (Perry Minasian) and A’s (David Forst) fired their general managers in June and August, respectively.At this point, the Astros look like the leaders of this feeble division, but that’s not saying much. Houston leads the AL West by just one game over the in-state rival Rangers and hasn’t been able to put real distance between the other contending teams in the division. But if there’s one thing the Astros have going for them, it’s that AL MVP front-runner Yordan Álvarez is in their lineup every night and has shown no signs of slowing down. Álvarez has been a machine this season, leading the American League in every major offensive category, including batting average (.319), home runs (36), RBI (91) and hits (152).The Rangers, meanwhile, despite doing almost nothing at the trade deadline, are not only knocking on the Astros’ door but also one good week away from jumping them in the standings. The biggest thing going for Texas is that they’ve started to get healthy at the right time. The 2026 Rangers have been middling in every aspect, but with two-time World Series MVP Corey Seager back in the lineup and starting to get hot, they at least have that going for them.Then there’s the Mariners. They’ve been the biggest disappointment in baseball this season and, after being one win away from reaching the World Series last fall, are now fighting for their playoff lives. Entering this year, many believed this was going to be Seattle’s division to lose, but an offense ranked 30th in runs scored combined with dreadful seasons from Cal Raleigh and Julio Rodríguez have left the M’s on the brink of missing the postseason.The biggest advantage Seattle has at this point is that it has the easiest schedule the rest of the way, with three games left against the Blue Jays and Rockies and seven games each against the Angels and A’s.The winner of the AL West this season might very well be the worst division winner ever. The worst division winner in MLB history by record is the 2005 San Diego Padres, who finished the season 82-80. There has never been a team that won a division or reached the postseason with a losing record. But this year’s AL West division winner has the potential to do just that.But what’s worse than the fact that one AL West team is guaranteed to get into the postseason? There’s still a possibility that two AL West teams reach the playoffs. Entering play Friday, the Rangers are only two games behind Cleveland for the third and final AL wild card. And if not for the Guardians having rattled off a seven-game winning streak, Texas would likely be in wild-card position right now.The reality is no AL West team really deserves to reach the postseason this year. All five teams deserve to go home at the end of September. But it doesn’t work that way in baseball. So we all have to resign ourselves to watching maybe the saddest division race MLB has ever seen over the season’s final four weeks.

Sometime in July or August, the feature, called “Athlete Intelligence,” became a built-in part of premium subscriptions. If you have a free account, you still won’t see it, but if you subscribe to Strava Premium, you’ll now have the summaries stuck onto all of your workouts. What is Strava's "Athlete Intelligence"?Athlete Intelligence, conveniently abbreviated AI, is a Strava feature that gives text responses to your workouts. It’s only available for premium subscribers. Strava refers to “insights” in these responses, but as far as I can tell, they just seem to regurgitate the information from the workout description, sometimes with added errors. I used the feature briefly, around the time it launched (I was a premium subscriber then), but quickly turned it off when I realized it wasn’t telling me anything interesting. I asked my colleague Meredith Dietz, who has a premium subscription, whether she had seen anything useful in her Athlete Intelligence. She said, “They’re usually positive, so that’s nice. But ultimately: useless.” Meredith has written more about why AI fitness summaries are mostly useless, and Strava’s AI checks every box: it doesn’t use enough context to understand what’s going on, it presents generic advice as if it were personal, and it’s overconfident in its incomplete data. She showed me a recent Athlete Intelligence summary that said a run was both a “recovery run” and included her “fastest pace in two weeks.” Those are simply not compatible statements. Another message complimented her “solid half-marathon effort” on a run that Meredith says was “not even close to a half-marathon effort.” What happened behind the scenes? You used to be able to turn off the AI. When Strava launched Athlete Intelligence in October 2024, it was a “beta” feature available to premium users only. Since then—as far as I can remember—Strava’s support page had instructions for opting out of Athlete Intelligence. But that changed recently. The last Wayback Machine snapshot that included those instructions is from June 30, 2026. A snapshot from Aug. 4 removed both the question and answer about opting out. On Aug. 26, I noticed a Reddit thread where users were wondering where the opt-out feature went. The support page currently says, “There isn’t an option to opt out of Athlete Intelligence.” I asked what happened, and received an answer from a Strava spokesperson: “As was standard practice for experimental features, Athlete Intelligence launched with a "turn off" mechanism scoped to its initial beta period. Given the feature’s formal exit from beta, that mechanism is no longer available. We invite all subscribers to tap Give Feedback to help us improve the insights they see.”Athlete Intelligence officially left beta in February of last year. If the support page was kept up to date over the subsequent year and a half, then it seems the opt-out was removed much later. (The instructions used to say to click “leave beta” and then changed to “leave Athlete Intelligence” sometime before June 21 this year.) I asked Strava for clarification on the timeline, and got the answer: “Thanks for the follow up, we're not able to provide additional information.”Why “Athlete Intelligence” has been such a disappointmentStrava claimed in its February 2025 announcement that over 80% of users found Athlete Intelligence useful. That seems hard to believe, given the weaknesses that both Meredith and I noticed in our own AI summaries. For all my browsing of Strava user forums, I’ve often seen people complaining about the AI’s tone or pointing out its mistakes; I’m really not seeing anyone praising it for being insightful or for helping to analyze or plan training. Meredith finds the summaries easy to ignore. I found they annoyed me, so I hid them while it was still possible to do so. So far I’m not seeing anybody who opted out complaining that the summaries are back; it’s possible they will remain hidden. But the option to turn them off is no longer available. You can still “leave feedback” on a given response, but there used to be an option to leave Athlete Intelligence altogether. That option is no longer there, and given Strava’s statement, it doesn’t seem likely it will come back.

A long detour on the Corvallis to the Sea hiking trail is no longer needed.The group that manages the trail announced it has opened a new stretch to replace a portion that closed in the fall of 2025 when the property it sits on was sold and the new owner declined to allow public access.The closure led to a five-mile detour near the western end of the trail where hikers had to instead take a stretch of the trail meant for cyclists.“They get to stay in the woods, walk on decommissioned forest service roads and a little bit of single-track trail on four different private properties,” said C2C board member Steve McLay.The largest delays came from time spent cutting new trails, dealing with blackberry brambles along a portion, and getting access to federal land.“The U.S. Forest Service worked with us really well, but of course with the process of putting trails on federal land there’s a bunch of specialists that need to look at it: botanists, road guys and endangered species specialists and such,” said McLay. “So it had to go and sit on a bunch of different people’s desks for review before getting finalized.”That step then allowed C2C to contact the private land owners in the area to ask for permission to use or reroute the trail on their land, including timber companies Campbell Global, Manulife, Starker Forests Inc. and Coast Range Conifers.McLay said an interaction with Campbell Global summed up what most of the requests to use private land were like.“All it was was a phone call to those guys,” he said. “Just, ‘hey, here’s what’s going on. Are you going to let us keep the trail on your property?’ And without hesitation they said, ‘yeah, go for it.’”McLay said C2C encountered almost no resistance after the initial declination of use that led to the rerouting. The Kentucky Wildcats are going to have a hectic 2026-27 season, and their schedule, at least for their non-conference opponents, is now finalized. The Cats will be facing Kansas, Indiana, and Virginia early on in the season, with Louisville and North Carolina coming in December. All five of those games should present unique challenges for the team. There are a ton of buy games as well, including against Manhattan, Grambling State, and Northern Arizona. Thankfully, Mark Pope and company also were able to put on the schedule a few difficult exhibition games, facing UCF and Texas Tech at home in October prior to the commencement of the regular season. The addition of Missouri transfer forward Mark Mitchell, if he can sustain his eligibility through the onslaught of court battles, will be another huge weapon. With depth and high-end talent, Pope is going to have to figure out how to make this team gel, especially with limited returning players. A lawsuit filed against a New Jersey school district by a right-wing legal advocacy group reveals the coordinated effort among “parents’ rights” and other anti-LGBTQ+ groups to strip students of privacy and other protections in schools, all while falsely promoting their legal success as inevitable. The Thomas More Society — a prolific Christian nationalist litigator with a history of cases challenging marriage equality, abortion rights, and President Joe Biden’s election in 2020 — filed the lawsuit last year on behalf of two teachers in California who wanted to challenge a state law protecting students from outing by school districts. The law is being challenged in the ongoing court case of Mirabelli v. Bonta. Related SCOTUS rules parents have a right to prevent their kids from reading books with LGBTQ+ characters This year, the US Supreme Court allowed a lower-court injunction restricting the state’s student confidentiality law from taking effect while cases involving similar policies in California move through the courts. Now, the anti-LGBTQ+ group Moms for Liberty has joined the Thomas More Society in disingenuously promoting that injunction as “one of the most significant parental rights rulings in a generation,” and proclaiming it as binding on a New Jersey school district’s policies. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Now, the two organizations are suing the School District of the Chathams Board of Education over its policy allowing school employees to withhold information about a student’s gender identity from their parents, alleging the policy violates parents’ First and Fourteenth Amendment rights, the New Jersey Globe reports. The policy also violates the Supreme Court’s stay in Mirabelli v. Bonta, the two groups maintain, when in fact, no decision in that case has been made. Neither the school district in New Jersey nor any other state is legally obligated to proactively end its privacy protections based on the California case. The Chathams school board President Ann Ciccarelli said as much at a June 15 meeting of the board. “The United States Supreme Court decision, Mirabelli, is not binding on public school districts in New Jersey,” she told members. The new suit cites that claim as evidence the district is in flagrant violation of the U.S. Supreme Court. “The Chathams Board of Education had every opportunity to fix this policy,” said Christopher Ferrara, senior counsel at the Thomas More Society. “Instead, its own president stood up at a public meeting and told parents that Supreme Court precedent simply doesn’t apply to them. That is not a legal argument; it is defiance of the law of the land. And we intend to hold this district accountable in federal court.” Moms for Liberty is asking the court to declare the school district’s privacy policy unconstitutional and block its enforcement unless a list of demands is met, including a requirement to include parental notice and consent before a student changes names or pronouns, socially transitions, participates in mixed-sex sports, uses facilities based on gender identity, or is referred to an LGBTQ+ advocacy organization. “When Thomas More Society prevailed at the Supreme Court, we made a promise: any school board or district that kept hiding a child’s so-called ‘gender transition’ from parents, or that punished kids for refusing to bow down to an ideology they don’t believe, would be held accountable,” Ferrara said, practically willing the groups’ school district opponents to give up their fight peremptorily. Moms for Liberty CEO Tina Descovich employed similar rhetoric to imply the fight was already over. “Parents are the primary educators and caregivers of their children, not school boards, not counselors, and not ideologues pushing secret gender transitions behind closed doors,” Descovich in a statement, citing a second case, the Supreme Court’s unrelated June 2025 decision in Mahmoud v. Taylor, which required a Maryland school district to allow parents with religious objections to opt their children out of instruction using LGBTQ+ inclusive content. “The Chathams Board of Education’s open defiance of the Supreme Court’s clear rulings in Mirabelli and Mahmoud is an assault on the constitutional rights of every family in that district,” she said. “Moms for Liberty will not stand by while schools hide life-altering decisions from parents or persuade children to affirm an ideology that violates their conscience and faith. We are proud to partner with the Thomas More Society to defend parental rights in New Jersey and across America.” Trans journalist Erin Reed noted that “forced outing is a harmful practice and noted that the Trevor Project has reported that LGBTQ+ youth in schools with forced outing and other anti-trans policies report significantly higher rates of anxiety, depression, and suicide attempts. “Not every family is supportive, and forced outing often leads to transgender youth being forced outside of their home or abused,” Reed added. A judge has sided with Oregon’s new statewide recycling system in a lawsuit brought by distributors.The National Association of Wholesaler-Distributors sued state officials in 2025. They criticized Oregon’s law requiring them to pay fees based on the packaging they use to distribute products — like beverages, building supplies and medical supplies — to other businesses.Those fees help pay for standardizing Oregon’s recycling standards and expanding recycling services to more communities. The distributors association argued the law was unconstitutional. After a five-day bench trial, U.S. District Judge Michael Simon sided with Leah Feldon, director of the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality, who was named in the lawsuit. Simon ruled that Oregon’s Plastic Pollution and Recycling Modernization Act didn’t violate commerce clauses in the U.S. Constitution. The National Association of Wholesaler-Distributors is made up of 30,000 businesses representing the $8.6 trillion wholesale distribution industry. They range from mid-sized companies to publicly-traded corporations that rank among the Fortune 100. The association is challenging similar recycling laws in California and Colorado.In court documents, the distributors association called Oregon’s recycling system a “labyrinthine scheme, shrouded in secrecy,” that imposes fees on businesses that have little control over the rates they pay.They also argued the law discriminates against out-of-state businesses. In one example, the association noted exemptions for Oregon state, local and special government bodies, including Oregon public universities. Those in-state agencies don’t need to pay product packaging fees, even when they sell branded merchandise. Out-of-state schools like Washington State University don’t have the same exemption.The law also exempts small businesses with gross revenues under $5 million. The association argued this discriminates against companies with operations in multiple states. They presented an example: A $1 million-company solely with operations in Oregon would be exempt, but a company with $1 million-worth of operations in Oregon — in addition to other operations in other states — might still have to pay fees.Still, the judge found no evidence supporting their arguments. Simon wrote that by enacting the recycling law, “Oregon is exercising two fundamental police powers: mitigating waste pollution and protecting the health and safety of its citizenry.”The ruling lifts a preliminary injunction that temporarily halted packaging payment requirements from the association’s members. If a business fails to pay its required fees, it could face fees ranging from $375 to $3,000 a day.“While we are disappointed with the outcome, we were prepared for it,” the association’s staff wrote in a press statement, adding that they are considering “options for next steps.”If the association were to appeal Simon’s decision, it would bring the case to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.A handful of other states have passed similar recycling laws, but Oregon was the first to officially launch its recycling system and begin charging producers fees in 2025. Those fees are based on how much paper and other packaging a company produces. For example, money might help a local hauling company purchase new trucks and recycling bins, while some funds would help local governments administer the program and educate people about how to recycle.Wholesalers and distributors have to pay for any new packaging they add to the system. So, a distributor that delivers canned soda to grocery stores wouldn’t be charged for the cans the soda comes in, but it could be charged for pallets it uses to deliver canned soda and then disposed of afterward.In 2025, distributors’ invoiced fees made up less than 5% of all producer fees in Oregon, according to DEQ’s court filings.

Cordova/Long Beach News via AP)2026-08-28T19:49:19Z Clownfish clamber around a watery enclosure, a couple of brownbanded bamboo sharks weave between rocks and lines of coral sit in tanks basking under artificial grow lights — all creatures seized from illegal wildlife trafficking and placed at the Aquarium of the Pacific for care and a home.The Long Beach aquarium took in nearly 1,000 trafficked marine animals over the course of two operations this summer, in which wildlife officials each time intercepted a box truck carrying thousands of confiscated creatures.Nate Jaros, vice president of animal care at the aquarium, said this is one of the largest hauls the aquarium has handled in years.The first operation, in June, led authorities to a box truck carrying some 2,000 animals, a mix of reptiles, fish and invertebrates that were being smuggled for sale on the black market.Aquarium officials received some 500 marine animals from that operation on June 19, taking in an array of fish, sharks, clams, shrimp, prawns and tiny snails. The facility being understaffed that day, employees worked through the night to move the creatures into specialized quarantine areas where they tested their shipping water for pH, dissolved oxygen and ammonia levels — the byproducts of the animals’ waste — before slowly acclimating them to their new tanks. About a quarter of the animals died either upon arrival or within days after, Jaros said.“It’s just a very careful acclimation process,” Jaros said, adding it can take hours to get the chemistry just right. “We were working till about 1 a.m. There were four of us here, and we could have easily used three more people just kind of streamlining. … It’s a very stressful process.” Another operation near the end of July brought another 300 marine animals to the aquarium after a brief stay at a federal wildlife center in Torrance. Read More The seizure was coordinated through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Wildlife Confiscations Network, of which the Aquarium of the Pacific is a founding member. Since joining, the aquarium has taken in more than 3,300 trafficked animals, including axolotls, corals, reptiles and fish. Earlier this year, it received grant funding to expand and upgrade its holding systems in anticipation of future confiscations.The network, launched in 2023 as a partnership between the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, has sought to streamline the placement of animals seized in illegal trafficking so they can be sent to accredited facilities to rehabilitate and rehome the critters. Southern California, considered an epicenter for trafficked wildlife, sees much of it moving through the region’s ports of entry from Asian countries. Monkeys, tigers, exotic birds destined for the pet trade or as trophies, reptiles and sea cucumbers prized for food and medicine all pass through the region’s airports and border crossings, according to officials with the network. Without food or a change of water, animals often arrive in a weakened state, ripped from reefs in places like Indonesia, Fiji, Tonga, Australia or the Caribbean — before being packed by the hundreds into small bags of seawater for shipping, they often carry heavy parasite loads that worsen under the stress of captivity.“These animals are likely from the reef, and that means that all animals that live in nature have some level of parasites,” Jaros said. “And when you bring them into a stressful environment, those parasite loads can start to increase. So they’re kind of vulnerable in that regard. A lot of times, those fish are going to need medical treatment as well, to ensure that we can rid them of parasites that are also compromising their health.” Among the species rescued were brownbanded bamboo sharks, listed as near threatened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature; Banggai cardinalfish, which are endangered; and ocellaris clownfish, one of the most heavily traded species in the pet industry.Coral made up a significant share of the intake, and identifying it can be painstaking. “There’s thousands of species. They’re difficult to identify. Some of the cases need a microscope to identify them,” Jaros said, noting the aquarium takes in hundreds of confiscated corals every year arriving via air freight through Los Angeles International Airport.Given the nature of how these federal anti-trafficking operations are conducted, aquarium officials say they know very little about how these animals got here or where they were headed. Past a large gate and down a path lined by corrugated metal pipes, many of the fish explore their new home inside two 2,500-gallon tanks covered with a tied-down tarp. More than 40 species swim about in the water. There were yellow longnose butterflyfish, domino damselfish, lemonpeel angelfish, clownfish and powder blue tang.Between a school of banghai cardinalfish, a single juvenile emperor angelfish cut through — its deep blue scales segmented by white, vein-looking striations. Jaros said this one is still young, and that by the time it’s an adult it’ll be an entirely different-looking fish, yellow and blue striped. That adulthood, unfortunately, must be spent inside a tank like this one. Experts say these animals cannot return to the wild. Introducing a fish foreign to the region could bring diseases into the water. The fish, having been medicated by this point, would have weakened immune systems unable to protect them against parasites.Most are instead forced to live inside aquariums or rehabilitation centers for the rest of their lives. Some must also be housed and cared for as evidence — either until charges against a defendant are dismissed or the animals are permanently seized by the government.Jaros said the aquarium has already found homes for a large share of the animals and expects to send them to other accredited facilities within about two weeks; others will be acclimated into Long Beach’s own exhibits. (AP Photo/Lynne Sladky)2026-08-28T19:41:40Z WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration is appealing a judge’s ruling that blocked limitations on mail voting before the midterm elections, the latest twist in a court fight unfolding days before the first states begin sending out mail ballots for the pivotal November elections.The notice of appeal filed Friday comes after a federal judge in Boston handed down a new decision blocking implementation of an executive order from President Donald Trump for the next two weeks.The Supreme Court previously allowed the plan to move ahead on procedural grounds, but hasn’t decided whether it’s legal. The U.S. 1st Circuit Court of Appeals will next consider the case, though it could soon be back before the nation’s highest court. Under Trump’s executive order, the U.S. Postal Service could refuse to deliver ballots from states that do not submit lists of eligible voters and follow a uniform envelope style. The White House calls the plan a set of “commonsense measures” aimed at protecting ballot security, and calls the order blocking it “unreasoned and unlawful.” The plaintiffs didn’t have immediate comment on the appeal. U.S. District Court Judge Indira Talwani found that states don’t have the time or money to design and produce new ballots, update their systems and train officials to upload voter data to the Postal Service in the short time before the midterm elections. The first mail ballots of the general election to determine control of Congress are scheduled to be sent out Sept. 4. With the incumbent Lula — who is seeking a fourth, nonconsecutive term — currently polling neck and neck with Sen.
