The Rays’ new stadium is expected to open in 2029. The Tampa City Council city voted 4-3 on Thursday to approve $80 million. Rays CEO Ken Babby said the team’s partnership with the county and city on the project secures the long-term future of Major League Baseball in Tampa Bay.“We now look forward to celebrating before breaking ground with Hillsborough County and the City of Tampa on a future that has long been doubted, but will indeed happen,” Babby said. “By making the Forever Home a reality, the Rays are now home forever in Tampa Bay.” The Rays have committed to contributing at least $1.3 billion, plus any cost overruns. Klamath County Fire District 3 is ending its ambulance service after district officials said the cost of providing coverage across a vast, rural area became unsustainable.The board voted unanimously Friday to end its ambulance service because of costs. The change is expected to increase ambulance response times for residents in eastern Klamath County and pull resources from elsewhere in the county.The district, which covers a rural region east of Sprague River, has been providing ambulance services since late 2023 and received its own ambulance license in January 2024.The service was paid for through billing for each transport. Interim Chief Nate Hussey said many patients are covered by Medicare or Medicaid, which he said reimburses the district for only about 15% of what the district bills.“It is not a sustainable situation based on how ambulance services run in the state,” Hussey said. “It’s a rigged game that rural and frontier ambulance services are forced to play. There is no funding to operate an ambulance service, short of insurance billing.”The problem is compounded when crews respond to calls that don’t result in a trip to the hospital because then the district can’t bill for it.“The last three months, we’ve had 30, 35 to 40 ambulance calls per month, but only about 20 a month of those have resulted in us transporting,” Board Chair Dan Hudson said.That means crews can spend hours responding to an emergency without generating revenue.“We really only get paid if we deliver patients to the hospital,” Hussey said. “We don’t get paid for canceled calls. We don’t get paid for patient refusals. We don’t get paid for deceased individual calls. All of which we are trekking hundreds of miles across eastern Klamath County to get to.”While urban agencies can turn around a call in half an hour, he said, District 3 calls often take three to four hours because of the distances involved.Hussey said ending ambulance service will shrink the district’s annual budget from about $500,000 to about $150,000.Meanwhile, he said it’s difficult to attract employees because of low pay.The district had to borrow $30,000 from the county to meet payroll this month. It’s also waiting on $35,000 from the Oregon Health Authority’s Ground Emergency Medical Transportation program.Ambulance coverage in the district will now be divided among Chiloquin Fire and Rescue, Klamath County Fire District 1 and Basin Ambulance.But they will take longer to reach District 3 residents.Hudson said District 3 will continue responding to medical calls as first responders, but the volunteer crews will no longer be able to transport patients.Hussey, who has spent years working on the ambulance, said he’s one of 10 people losing their jobs as the service ends.“I staffed the ambulance a lot for the last four years. I have staffed, for the most part, that ambulance roughly 100 hours a week,” he said. “For me, this is super personal. I’ve actually invested my life, to the detriment of my home life and my family, into trying to keep this ambulance on the road.”Fire District 3 is the fifth entity to attempt to run an ambulance in this region, Hussey said, and the only solution he sees is potentially a separate tax district for ambulance services.“But in truth, I don’t believe that Klamath County residents have the palate currently for that to be a conversation,” he said.Jane Vaughan is a reporter with Jefferson Public Radio. The U.S. has tapped its strategic petroleum reserves, which in early August fell below 300 million barrels, down by more than 100 million barrels since the start of 2026. In the days following Maduro’s ouster in January, Trump floated the idea of U.S. oil companies returning to Venezuela to tap its oil reserves. Trump has argued that Venezuela stole U.S. oil when former Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez’s moved decades ago to nationalize hundreds of foreign-owned assets, including those owned by American oil companies. Venezuela has one of the largest oil reserves in the world, with an estimated 303 billion barrels of crude oil in the ground. That’s about 17% of the world’s supply, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Unlike other parts of the world, where geologists have to search for untapped oil, the reserves under Venezuela’s soil are largely mapped and known, experts say. But because of dilapidated infrastructure, the country only produces about 1% of the world’s oil. (AP Photo/Mary Conlon, File)2026-08-28T23:12:08Z NEW YORK (AP) — The recent announcement of Pennsylvania’s first measles-related deaths in decades has ignited a public feud among politicians and health officials who disagree over the role of the contagious disease in the fatalities.Independent experts say the conflict is a symptom of a social and political debate over how to frame a national surge in measles cases, the worst seen in more than three decades.Pennsylvania officials this week reported that two unvaccinated residents died after being infected with measles, with Gov. Josh Shapiro stressing that vaccinations could have averted the deaths.But the announcement quickly came under fire, as a clash erupted between Shapiro, a vaccine-promoting Democrat, and U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a Trump administration appointee with a history of raising alarms about established vaccines. Kennedy said in a social post the deaths “may even have been altogether fabricated.” Kennedy’s attack echoed statements he made last year, when three measles-related deaths were recorded. Kennedy questioned whether one of the children who died was killed by measles.Medical experts say the brouhaha has diverted focus from an exploding public health threat.“Now it’s turned political,” said Dr. Amesh Adalja, an infectious disease doctor in the Pittsburgh area and a senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security. “It’s no longer about getting answers and figuring this out.” The challenges of tallying measles deaths The U.S. eliminated the domestic spread of measles in 2000 by maintaining high vaccination rates, but they have fallen in recent years to below the 95% coverage needed to prevent outbreaks. In November, international health officials will meet to determine if the U.S. and Mexico have lost their measles-free status. Read More Complicating the situation in Pennsylvania are questions about what counts as a measles death, which is rare in the United States. The World Health Organization counts a death when a person has tested positive for measles and when the death occurs within a month from when a rash appears and the death is not obviously due to another cause such as trauma.State health officials are the ones who report measles cases and measles-associated deaths. The question of defining a measles death hasn’t come up much in recent decades because vaccination rates were high and measles illnesses and deaths had become rare. Recent trends are driving conversations among health officials about how to better track the consequences of a surging problem. “As measles infections increase, we also need to prepare for more of the tragic complications we have largely avoided in this country for decades,” including not only deaths but also hospitalizations and brain injuries, said Janet Hamilton, executive director of the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists, in a statement. What’s known and not known about the measles deaths In Pennsylvania, what’s not disputed is that both people who died had been infected with measles and they were unvaccinated. The unresolved question is whether measles was the main cause, or a contributing cause, of their deaths. In one of the deaths, an official has reached a conclusion. The Lancaster County Coroner, Dr. Stephen Diamantoni, said he is aware of only one death with evidence of measles infection. It was a newborn baby boy who died August 14 — someone too young to get a recommended measles vaccination.Because one of the boy’s family members had measles, investigators tested the boy’s lung tissue and found evidence of measles infection, Diamantoni said.But investigators did not see signs of a swollen spleen or other ravages from a measles infection that would have contributed to the death. The cause is being attributed to a tear in the spleen, but the coroner’s office says the virus did not play a role.The baby “did not die as a result of measles,” Diamantoni said.The Pennsylvania Department of Health initially refused to disclose any details about the two people who died. But on Wednesday night, state health officials posted on social media that one of the deaths is under investigation by the coroner’s office. No information has been released about the second death. The department said it stands by its announcement, adding that it relies on two questions to determine if a death was measles-related: Did the person have measles and did they die? As of Friday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has not updated the latest national tally of measles cases and deaths. The agency said on its website that the scheduled update was delayed, but did not disclose why. Dr. Paul Offit said he’s worried that two measles-related deaths are an unusually high number in a county that reportedly has about 400 cases. The expected death rate for measles is 1 in 1,000 cases.That suggests there are a large number of other unreported infections in the Lancaster County area, said Offit, a Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia vaccine researcher. That’s worrisome, given that this is the time of year when kids go back to school, which could increase the spread of an extremely transmissible disease. Vaccination efforts need to be stepped up “to prevent what I think is a coming disaster,” Offit said. Adalja faulted Pennsylvania officials for how they announced the deaths earlier this week. Conrad Seneca on Friday called for Trump’s order to be rescinded and for the Lake Ontario name to remain as a reflection of the Indigenous people in the U.S. and Canada who lived in territory around and along the lake long before the creation of either nation.“The President cannot assert ownership over our culture or erase it through irresponsible political action,” he said in a statement.Trump this week signed an order directing the Interior Department to update the lake’s name in the U.S. geographic naming service, part of his escalating trade war with Canada. The order showed the change is supposed to be made in 30 days. Seneca said the renaming violated the 1794 Treaty of Canandaigua, which was signed by President George Washington and the Haudenosaunee confederacy promising perpetual peace and friendship. The Seneca are one of the six nations of the confederacy, also known as the Iroquois Confederacy. The name Lake Ontario comes from the Huron Indigenous people’s word “oniatarí:io,” which means “lake of shining waters.” The Canadian province of Ontario, founded in 1867, took its name from the lake. In the traditional Seneca language, the lake’s name is “sga:nyodai:yoh,” meaning “beautiful lake,” Seneca said. The NFL preseason only has a handful of games left, and roster cutdown day will be here soon. Teams will be forced to make a number of tough decisions by Sunday at 6 p.m. Once-hopeful talents will have to pick up the pieces and figure out what comes next in their football careers.One of those teams has a unique situation on its hands. The Cleveland Browns have four quarterbacks on the roster and will have to part ways with at least one of them. For now, the only secured spot belongs to Deshaun Watson after the Browns named him the starter.The other three are Shedeur Sanders, Dillon Gabriel and Taylen Green. Sanders and Gabriel both entered the league last year, while Green was drafted this season. He would require more work than any young quarterback since Anthony Richardson. Monken doesn’t have that luxury of time.Green could still be kept around because of that athletic upside, though. Perhaps Monken could create some packages for him within the offense?

Seattle Seahawks running back Jacardia Wright joined the team last offseason as an undrafted free agent out of Missouri State, and hung around on the practice squad all season while they climbed the mountain and won Super Bowl LX. He got on the field for just five snaps in one regular season game. Tonight, he has a shot to make his 2026 season completely different. He is in the driver’s seat to win the last running back job on the 53-man active roster for Week 1 of the regular season.Last week, he showed off his explosive, home run-hitting style on a 69-yard touchdown run right up the gut of the Tennessee Titans defense. Doing that again certainly wouldn’t hurt, but they know he can do that now. Showing the other dimensions of his game, like pass blocking, pass catching, and short yardage ability would be just as positive for his chances of surviving final roster cuts. If he can be Jalen Milroe’s best friend and find ways to bail him out, he can put up the exact type film the coaches want to see versus the Kansas City Chiefs’ backups tonight.Right now, Wright is competing with veteran Velus Jones Jr. for the third roster spot behind George Holani and Jadarian Price. Jones got more of the third-string RB touches last season after coming in from the Bears, but Wright’s tape and workload through two preseason games is clearly the more impressive of the two, and he’s the ascending, younger talent. What are the early indicators, for better or worse? These are a few.1.) Can NC State’s defense be more consistently disruptive on passing plays? State’s defense was really, really bad on passing downs last season—its havoc rate stunk, it was bad on a per-play basis, from an EPA basis, from pretty much every basis. Whole thing was ugly. Virginia doesn’t have a skill position group that’s scaring anybody, and as long as Beau Pribula is the starting quarterback—which I don’t think will last long—then the ceiling there is pretty low. But if he has four seconds to make a decision every time he drops back, he’s going to look like Joe Montana. The battle between UVA’s offensive line and State’s defense might be the only thing that really matters in this game.2.) Is CJ Bailey ready to be the kind of quarterback who can carry a team to a big win? The pressure is on now. Everybody knows what kind of player Bailey is, and what he can be—and he’s being paid to deliver. Is he ready to handle it? He’s working with a brand new bunch of receivers, and he is going to have to improvise for State to have success offensively. There will be breakdowns and misunderstandings and he will need to fix a few things in the moment to keep the ball moving. It’s Week 0 and maybe the biggest game of his career so far. 3.) How good are Harvey Dyson and Popo Aguirre? NC State is counting on both to be important; I think it’s fair to say both are high-floor guys, but can they be good enough to make the defense substantially better? Aguirre has the most work ahead of him on that one, and if he ends up a clear difference-maker, that changes the expectations for the defense. The margins for success on this defense are extremely small—if either of these guys has an off day, if either gets hurt, it’s extremely bad news.

The Sentinels are the 10th-ranked team in California high schools' competitive Southern Section.Inglewood is a tough matchup for Westlake. But the Chaps are still one of the more talented teams in Central Texas. The Los Angeles Chargers are preparing for another season and have some roster decisions to make before cutdown day.Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh and general manager Joe Hortiz will have to work together to finalize the 53-man roster. NFL teams must complete their cuts by 6 p.m. ET on Sunday, Aug. 30. Players could be released in the days and hours leading up to the deadline.The Chargers will have to account for several scenarios, especially for a franchise that’s been plagued by injuries and late-game mistakes. In recent years, the Chargers have dealt with injuries across the offensive line. The Chargers already had some attrition there and will have to lean on second-round pick Jake Slaughter as their new starter, following the season-ending injury to Tyler Biadasz.Kayode Awosika and Trey Pipkins III were among the contenders for the Chargers' starting left guard spot. Awosika was tabbed as the starter for the last preseason game and may have secured the starting role. He's made just 11 career starts. Pipkins is in his eighth season with the Chargers and has the ability to play both guard and tackle. He’s made 51 starts at tackle and just 15 as a guard.Gregory Desrosiers will be a player to watch this weekend. He was among the standouts for the Chargers during the preseason finale but is currently listed as sixth on the depth chart. Desrosiers produced 118 yards and a touchdown on nine carries against the Rams. His longest rush of the game was 34 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter."I try to just control what I can control and handle business. Everything will take care of itself," Desrosiers told CBS sideline reporter Jaime Maggio after the gameJustin Herbert is obviously the starting quarterback, but what the Chargers do with the rest of their quarterback room remains unknown.Trey Lance and DJ Uiagalelei have both seen time on the field during the preseason. While both showed positives during the three-game sample size, the Chargers could still explore other available quarterbacks from other teams.There are questions that remain on the defensive side of the ball, including the depth at linebacker. He will need to throw in another rehab game before he's ready to return."It didn’t feel great the next day, and we wanted to make sure he had a great catch play the next day,” Murphy said of Uribe regarding his Tuesday outing. “If you bring him back here and he gets (hurt again), then you’re in a bind. Ten months after a group of unhoused Pendleton residents alleged in a lawsuit that the city had made it extremely difficult to find a legal place to sleep at night, both sides met in open court for the first time in nearby Hermiston.Umatilla County Circuit Court Judge Daniel Hill heard arguments Friday and will now decide which holds more water: Pendleton’s case that it has fundamentally reformed its policies since the initial lawsuit or the plaintiffs’ argument that the rules’ words have changed, but the problems with them haven’t. At the center of the Pendleton litigation are city rules outlining where and when people can sleep outside, which includes banning them altogether from resting on streets, sidewalks, alleys and other public rights-of-way. People who break these rules face fines and interactions with police.In October 2025, five unhoused Pendleton residents sued the city over the “resting” policy. They alleged Pendleton’s rules were hard to follow and left unsheltered people with few places to sleep at night. While the city initially pushed back in a public statement, city officials soon entered into settlement negotiations with the plaintiffs’ attorneys. Both sides came to terms on a proposed settlement in June, but the deal was rejected by the Pendleton City Council after a contentious public meeting in which many attendees encouraged the city to fight the lawsuit. At that public meeting, Chad Jacobs, the attorney the city hired to handle the lawsuit, told the audience that the city was likely to lose the case. But on Friday, Jacobs argued in court that the city had made enough changes to the resting policy since then to alleviate the harm alleged by the lawsuit. “In Oregon, there is a nearly universal and general rule that when you repeal an ordinance being challenged, the case is now moot,” he said. Jacobs referenced a July city council meeting in which the council made a number of changes to its rules. Jacobs said the ordinances now regulate “sheltering” rather than “resting,” offer a longer sheltering period in the evening and narrow the scope of public property bans for violations. The plaintiff’s attorney, Allison Nasson, said her clients were still confused about where they would be allowed to sleep and feared they could be penalized for simply trying to survive. “The essence of the controversy here is whether the city can lawfully prohibit plaintiffs from engaging in the behavior that they asserted in their complaint is necessary to survive living outside in Pendleton’s weather,” she said. “It is not about the numbers of the ordinances, or the terminology the city uses.”Hill and the attorneys also briefly discussed a new development in the case. On Tuesday, the Pendleton City Council plans to vote to declare a state of emergency around homelessness. City officials say the move enables the city to partner with a couple of local nonprofits to open a year-round homelessness shelter, the first of its kind in Pendleton. Hill asked if opening the shelter could be the “linchpin” in the case, but both attorneys stood by their arguments. Hill said he needed more time to study the case and would issue a ruling within the next 10 days.

Lewis Cass let a 15-point lead slip away during last week’s season opener against Pioneer.The Kings (0-1) will look to bounce back in their TRC opener tonight at Northfield (1-0).Cass won last year’s matchup 43-13. But Northfield turned last year’s 44-15 opening loss to North Miami into a 28-14 win last week.“They’ll be a challenge,” Cass coach Clayton Mannering said. “I tell everybody I think they’re the best coached team in the TRC. Coach (Brandon) Baker gets more out of those kids, I think, than anybody else. And they run a difficult offense. They run the triple option. So it’s something we’ve not practiced against this year until this week. So we’ll need to have a very good week of practice in order just to be prepared. And then I’m hoping that offensively we can find a way to run our offense regardless of who we’re playing. That’s what great teams do. Pioneer lost a lot to graduation from last year’s team that played in the Class 1A state championship game at Lucas Oil Stadium, but one of their best players in the trenches has returned for his senior year.Mikaden Tolosa shined in the season opener at Lewis Cass, helping the Panthers win in their fourth straight Clash of Cass County with a 20-15 comeback victory.Tolosa, a 5-foot-8, 206-pound senior, brings a unique skillset to the football field for the Panthers with his combination of size, strength, athleticism and tenacity.“We lost a lot of two-way players last year and he’s one of those veterans guys that’s been a staple of our O-line and D-line the last couple years, an all-state player we’re expecting big things from him this year,” Pioneer coach Adam Berry said. “He really showed what he could do this past Friday night. He was our defensive player of the game. He had that huge sack to essentially seal the game and just coming from that backside making plays. And not only defensively, but just being that staple on the offensive line and just having that grit.”Tolosa was credited with 10 tackles, 2.5 tackles for a loss and a 15-yard sack in the win over Cass.The Panthers fell into a 15-0 hole before outscoring the Kings 25-0 over the final 25 minutes.“I feel like we weren’t locked in the first half, we just didn’t play well,” Tolosa said. “And then we held them to one first down and seven rushing yards in the second half.”Pioneer high schoolers have been in eLearning over the last two-plus weeks after the historic flooding that first hit on Wednesday, Aug. 12.Tolosa said the unusual schedule has likely affected the team.“Whenever we don’t have school, I feel like we play worse than we usually do,” he said. “We don’t play as well. We figured out last year whenever we don’t have school, we play bad.”The good news is that Pioneer announced a target return date of Tuesday, Sept. 8, so the Panthers have just two more games where their schedules could be out of sync.Last Friday the Panthers looked down and out after they fell into a 15-0 hole against the Kings.“I made myself throw up because I drank so much water,” said Tolosa, who added he and the team seemed to find a second wind afterwards.The team also made some adjustments, he said.“I started slanting flatter,” he said. “I was going up field a little bit. I slanted flatter and I got more tackles. And our whole defense just did better, a lot better.”The Panthers lost some players like Micah Rans, Noah Van Meter and Liam Rouch to graduation. But they have some guys who are ready to step up this year.Tolosa said he’s particularly been impressed by freshman quarterback Colton Popejoy, sophomore tight ends Chase Van Meter and Adric Lee and senior linebacker Mason Shaver.“Our defensive line is pretty much the same from last year,” Tolosa added.He added the Kings were a strong Week 1 opponent to go up against.“They’re better than they were last year,” he said.What made the Panthers’ comeback even more impressive as arguably their best player, senior fullback/safety Shiloh Rine, was sidelined by a hip injury late in the first quarter.Tolosa expects Rine to return soon as he was able to run without pain at practice this week after being unable to do so at Monday’s practice.The Panthers have a chance to avenge on of their two losses from last year’s 13-2 season when they travel to Knox tonight. The Redskins graduated last year’s Mr. Football Myles McLaughlin, who is now a running back at Murray State.“I feel like that we can beat them this year if we just play well,” Tolosa said.

Award-winning pianist Jim-Isaac Chua brings classical music to rural Northwest.For award-winning classical musician Jim-Isaac Chua, playing the piano is not just about delivering a grand performance. But rather, a two-way conversation layered with sensitivity and nuance. “I try to communicate with every individual note,” he said. “How can I create that sound? How can I create that motion?” The classical music industry is a complex terrain to navigate, with problems related to accessibility and inclusivity at the forefront. However, Chua is on a mission to break down those walls, one show at a time. In 2025, the classical pianist embarked on a 10-city tour, which included towns like Spray, Oregon, and Twin Falls, Idaho. Chua makes it a point to tour rural Oregon and SW Washington so residents get an opportunity to catch a classical performance — for many, it’s their first. “Growing up in Tri-Cities, Washington, I really feel that music has a place everywhere. I feel like it has a place in a grand music hall, and it also has a place in rural towns as well,” he added. “I just would love to give everyone a chance to be able to enjoy it, to be able to hear it, to be able to have their own experience of it.” In addition to hosting formal performances for different communities across rural and eastern Oregon, the musician extends educational outreach to children while on tour. Last year, Chua performed for elementary school children at St. Mary’s Academy in The Dalles. “Finding artists that want to come out to The Dalles is often difficult,” Wendy Palmer, the development director of the school, said. “Having that opportunity for the students it gives them something like, ‘Hey, I could do that!’”Jim-Isaac Chua sat down with OPB to talk more about his artistry, as well as how important educational outreach is when it comes to this genre. Chua will be back in the Pacific Northwest later this year with shows lined up in Baker City, Oregon, (Oct. 11) and Post Falls, Idaho, (Oct. 17).

BALTIMORE (AP) — Tyler Huntley and Joe Fagnano each threw a touchdown pass in a dominant first half for the Baltimore Ravens, who wrapped up their preseason schedule with a 41-3 rout of the Washington Commanders on Friday night.With deep backups playing for both teams, it's hard to take much from this game, but anyone who bothered to watch saw a one-sided affair. Baltimore finished with a 26-7 edge in first downs, with the Commanders getting three of theirs on the very last drive. The Ravens also had a 456-177 advantage in total yards.The one sour note for the Ravens was a shaky game from kicker Tyler Loop, who made field goals of 51 and 24 yards but missed from 51 and 58. Loop, whose miss at the end of last season kept Baltimore out of the playoffs, went 5 of 8 on field goals in three exhibition games this year.The Ravens won all of them, though. Huntley played only the first offensive series Friday and completed all four of his passes, including a 25-yard scoring strike to Chris Moore that made it 7-0.Then Kaytron Allen fumbled on Washington's first offensive play, gifting the Ravens a short field.
