APNEWS.COMUgandas President Yoweri Museveni wins seventh term with 71.65% of votesUgandan President Yoweri Museveni speaks during the 60th Independence Anniversary Celebrations, in Kololo, Uganda, Sunday Oct. 9, 2022. (AP Photo/Hajarah Nalwadda, file)2026-01-17T08:33:40Z KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni won his seventh term with 71.65% of votes, according to official results Saturday, defeating the youthful challenger who campaigned for change after four decades of the same government. The musician-turned-politician best known as Bobi Wine took 24.72% of the vote, the final results showed. Wine, whose real name is Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, is expected to reject the official outcome. He has condemned what he described as an unfair electoral process, marred by an internet shutdown, military deployments and the alleged abductions of his polling agents. On Friday, he dismissed the provisional results as fake.Electoral officials also face questions about the failure of biometric voter identification machines on Thursday, which caused delays in the start of voting in urban areas including the capital, Kampala that are opposition strongholds. After the machines failed, in a blow to pro-democracy activists who have long demanded their use to curb rigging, polling officials used manual registers of voters. The failure of the machines is likely to be the basis for any legal challenges to the official result. Museveni, 81, has stayed in power over the years by rewriting the rules. The last legal obstacle to his rule term and age limits have been removed from the constitution, and some of Musevenis possible rivals for the presidency jailed or sidelined. He has not said when he will retire. Yusuf Serunkuma, an academic and columnist for the local Observer newspaper, told The Associated Press on Saturday that Wine didnt stand a chance against the authoritarian Museveni. He has quite successfully emasculated the opposition, Serunkuma said of Museveni. You would have to credit him for that.Even with Wines courageous challenge, Museveni faced one of the weakest oppositions in recent times, in part because opposition figures are not united while Museveni is the undisputed leader of his party and enjoys authority over the armed forces, Serunkuma said. Wines party had on Friday said he had been detained and taken from his home by an army helicopter but police on Saturday dismissed the reports as deceitful and inciteful. The police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke said Wine was not under arrest, as claimed by his party and was free to leave his house, but there was controlled access for others trying to go into the property, to prevent people from using the premises to incite violence. It should not surprise you when we have a pickup or two near the residence of Kyagulanyi, Rusoke said.President Museveni said he agreed with the electoral commissions plan to revert to paper voter registration records after the biometric machines failed, but Wine alleged fraud, claiming that there was massive ballot stuffing and that his partys polling agents were abducted to give an unfair advantage to the ruling party. The security forces were a constant presence throughout the election campaign, and Wine said authorities followed him and harassed his supporters, using tear gas against them. He campaigned in a flak jacket and helmet due to his security fears.Uganda has not witnessed a peaceful transfer of presidential power since independence from British colonial rule six decades ago.Veteran opposition figure Kizza Besigye, a four-time presidential candidate, remains in prison after he was charged with treason in February 2025.0 Commentarii 0 Distribuiri 19 Views 0 previzualizare

APNEWS.COMIrans leader calls Trump a criminal for backing protests and blames demonstrators for deathsA man holds a poster of the Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei during a funeral ceremony for a group of security forces, who were killed during anti-government protests, in Tehran, Iran, Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2026. (AP Photo/Vahid Salemi)2026-01-17T12:44:59Z DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) Irans Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Saturday branded U.S. President Donald Trump a criminal for supporting protesters in Iran, and blamed demonstrators for causing thousands of deaths. In a speech broadcast by state television, Khamenei said the protests had left several thousand people dead the first indication from an Iranian leader of the extent of the casualties from the wave of protests that began Dec. 28 and led to a bloody crackdown. In this revolt, the U.S. president made remarks in person, encouraged seditious people to go ahead and said: We do support you, we do support you militarily, said Khamenei, who has final say on all state matters. He reiterated an accusation that the U.S. seeks domination over Irans economic and political resources. We do consider the U.S. president a criminal, because of casualties and damages, because of accusations against the Iranian nation, he said. He described the protesters as foot soldiers of the United States and said they had destroyed mosques and educational centers. Through hurting people, they killed several thousand of them, he said. Trump had sounded a conciliatory toneHis comments come a day after Trump sounded a conciliatory tone, saying that Iran canceled the hanging of over 800 people, and adding that I greatly respect the fact that they canceled. He did not clarify who he spoke to in Iran to confirm the state of any planned executions. His comments were a sign he may be backing away from a military strike. In recent days, Trump had told protesting Iranians that help is on the way and that his administration would act accordingly if the killing of demonstrators continued or if Iranian authorities executed detained protesters. In his speech, Khamenei said rioters were armed with live ammunition that was imported from abroad, without naming any countries. We do not plan, we do not take the country toward war. But we do not release domestic offenders, worse than domestic offenders, there are international offenders. We do not let them alone either, he said, and urged officials to pursue the cases. An uneasy calmIran has returned to an uneasy calm after harsh repression of protests that began Dec. 28 over Irans ailing economy. The crackdown has left at least 3,090 people dead, according to the U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency, exceeding that of any other round of protest or unrest in Iran in decades and recalling the chaos surrounding the 1979 revolution. The agency has been accurate throughout the years of demonstrations, relying on a network of activists inside Iran that confirms all reported fatalities. The AP has been unable to independently confirm the toll. Iranian officials have repeatedly accused the United States and Israel of fomenting unrest in the country. On Friday, Irans President Masoud Pezeshkian, in a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, accused the U.S. and Israel of meddling in the unrest. Reports of limited internet access briefly restoredThere have been no signs of protests for days in Tehran, where shopping and street life have returned to outward normality, and Iranian state media has not reported on any new unrest.During the unrest, authorities blocked all internet access on Jan. 8. On Saturday, text messaging and very limited internet services began functioning again briefly in parts of Iran, witnesses said.Cellphone text messaging began operating overnight, while users were able to access local websites through a domestic internet service. Some also reported limited access to international internet services via use of a virtual private network, or VPN.The extent of access and what was behind it wasnt immediately. It was possible that officials were turning on some systems for the start of the Iranian working week, as the outage has affected businesses, particularly banks in the country trying to handle transactions.Internet traffic monitoring service Cloudflare and internet access advocacy group NetBlocks reported very slight increases in connectivity Saturday morning, while Irans semiofficial Mehr news agency also reported limited internet access. It did not offer an explanation. Exiled Iranian royal calls for further protestsThere have been no signs of protests for days in Tehran, where shopping and street life have returned to outward normality. A call by Irans exiled Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi for protesters to take to the streets again from Saturday to Monday did not appear to have been heeded by Saturday afternoon.Pahlavi, whose father was overthrown by Irans 1979 Islamic Revolution, enjoys support from die-hard monarchists in the diaspora but has struggled to gain wider appeal within Iran. However, that has not stopped him from presenting himself as the transitional leader of Iran if the government were to fall.0 Commentarii 0 Distribuiri 24 Views 0 previzualizare

APNEWS.COMUS congressional delegation seeks to reassure Denmark and Greenland after Trumps threatsSenator Chris Coons from the Democratic Party speaks during a press conference with the American delegation, consisting of senators and members of the House of Representatives, in Copenhagen, Denmark, Saturday, Jan. 17, 2026. (Ida Marie Odgaard/Ritzau Scanpix via AP)2026-01-17T11:28:31Z COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) A bipartisan U.S. congressional delegation on Saturday sought to reassure Denmark and Greenland of their support following President Donald Trumps threat to punish countries with tariffs if they dont back the U.S. taking over the strategic Arctic island.Delegation leader Sen. Chris Coons, a Delaware Democrat, said the current rhetoric around Greenland is causing concern across the Danish kingdom. He said he wants to de-escalate the situation.I hope that the people of the Kingdom of Denmark do not abandon their faith in the American people, Coons said in Copenhagen, adding that the U.S. has respect for Denmark and NATO for all weve done together.Meanwhile, thousands of people marched through Copenhagen, many of them carrying Greenlands flag, on Saturday afternoon in support of the self-governing island. Others held signs with slogans like Make America Smart Again and Hands Off. Another rally was planned in Nuuk, the Greenlandic capital, Coons comments contrasted with that emanating from the White House. Trump has sought to justify his calls for a U.S. takeover by repeatedly claiming that China and Russia have their own designs on Greenland, which holds vast untapped reserves of critical minerals. The White House hasnt ruled out taking the territory by force. There are no current security threats to Greenland, Coons said. Trump for months has insisted that the U.S. should control Greenland, a semiautonomous territory of NATO ally Denmark, and said earlier this week that anything less than the Arctic island being in U.S. hands would be unacceptable. During an unrelated event at the White House about rural health care, he recounted Friday how he had threatened European allies with tariffs on pharmaceuticals. I may do that for Greenland, too, Trump said. I may put a tariff on countries if they dont go along with Greenland, because we need Greenland for national security. So I may do that, he said. He had not previously mentioned using tariffs to try to force the issue.Earlier this week, the foreign ministers of Denmark and Greenland met in Washington this week with U.S. Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. That encounter didnt resolve the deep differences, but did produce an agreement to set up a working group on whose purpose Denmark and the White House then offered sharply diverging public views. European leaders have insisted it is only for Denmark and Greenland to decide on matters concerning the territory, and Denmark said this week that it was increasing its military presence in Greenland in cooperation with allies. There is almost no better ally to the United States than Denmark, Coons said. If we do things that cause Danes to question whether we can be counted on as a NATO ally, why would any other country seek to be our ally or believe in our representations?__Associated Press writer Stefanie Dazio in Berlin contributed to this report.0 Commentarii 0 Distribuiri 20 Views 0 previzualizare

APNEWS.COMUkrainian delegation arrives in US for peace talks as Russia hammers energy sitesSnow covered, damaged Russian military vehicles are on display in downtown Kyiv, Ukraine, Friday, Jan. 16, 2026. (AP Photo/Efrem Lukatsky)2026-01-17T11:29:22Z KYIV, Ukraine (AP) A Ukrainian delegation arrived in the United States for talks Saturday on a U.S.-led diplomatic push to end the nearly 4-year-old war as Russian attacks again took aim at Ukraines power grid, cutting electricity and heating in freezing temperatures.Kyrylo Budanov, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyys chief of staff, said he arrived in the U.S. to discuss the details of the peace agreement.Writing on the Telegram messaging app, Budanov said he, together with Ukrainian negotiators Rustem Umerov and Davyd Arakhamia, would meet with U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff, President Donald Trumps son-in-law Jared Kushner and U.S. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll. Zelenskyy said Friday that the delegation would try to finalize with U.S. officials documents for a proposed peace settlement that relate to postwar security guarantees and economic recovery. If American officials approve the proposals, the U.S. and Ukraine could sign the documents next week at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Zelenskyy said at a Kyiv news conference with Czech President Petr Pavel.Trump plans to be in Davos, according to organizers. Russia would still need to be consulted on the proposals.Russia struck energy infrastructure in Ukraines Kyiv and Odesa regions overnight into Saturday, the Ministry of Energy said. More than 20 settlements in the Kyiv region were left without power following the attacks, the ministry wrote on its official Telegram channel. Russia has hammered Ukraines power grid, especially in winter, throughout the war. It aims to weaken the Ukrainian will to resist in a strategy that Kyiv officials call weaponizing winter.Ukraines new energy minister, Denys Shmyhal, said Friday that Russia had conducted 612 attacks on energy targets over last year. That barrage has intensified in recent months as nighttime temperatures plunge to minus 18 degrees Celsius (0 Fahrenheit). Ukraine has introduced emergency measures, including temporarily easing curfew restrictions to allow people to go whenever they need to public heating centers set up by the authorities, Shmyhal said. He said hospitals, schools and other critical infrastructure remain the top priority for electricity and heat supplies.Officials have instructed state energy companies Ukrzaliznytsia, Naftogaz and Ukroboronprom to urgently purchase imported electricity covering at least 50% of their own consumption, according to Shmyhal.___Follow APs coverage of the war in Ukraine at https://apnews.com/hub/russia-ukraine0 Commentarii 0 Distribuiri 21 Views 0 previzualizare

WWW.404MEDIA.COScientists Make Stunning Find Inside Prehistoric Wolfs StomachWelcome back to the Abstract! These are the studies this week that entered the belly of the beast, craved human blood, exposed primate bonds, and pranked birdsFirst, a prehistoric chew toy for a puppy opens a window into a doomed lineage. Then: why saving species could save your own skin, the dazzling diversity of same-sex behavior in primates, and the exploits of asexual yams.As always, for more of my work, check out my book First Contact: The Story of Our Obsession with Aliens or subscribe to my personal newsletter the BeX Files.Im so hungry, I could eat a woolly rhinocerosGujnsdttir, Slveig et al. Genome Shows no Recent Inbreeding in Near-Extinction Woolly Rhinoceros Sample Found in Ancient Wolf's Stomach. Genome Biology and Evolution.Record scratch, freeze frame: Yep, that's me, an Ice Age woolly rhinoceros in a mummified wolf stomach. Youre probably wondering how I got into this situation. Well, the good news is that it was not because I am inbred, according to a new study.Thats my pitch for a movie based on the true story of some half-digested woolly rhinoceros (Coelodonta antiquitatis) remains that were wolfed down by a permafrost-preserved pupsicle from 14,400 years ago.Incredibly, scientists were able to sequence the genome of the rhino, which revealed that this individual still had a high level of genetic diversity in its lineage, and no signs of inbreeding. Considering that woolly rhinos vanished from the fossil record around 14,000 years ago, this study suggests that they may have experienced a very sudden population collapse, rather than a gradual demise. The piece of woolly rhino tissue found inside the stomach of the Tumat-1 puppy. Image: Love Daln/Stockholm University. While Late Pleistocene remains of woolly rhinoceros are numerous, very few remains exist from around the estimated time of extinction, said researchers led by Slveig M. Gujnsdttir of Stockholm University. At 14,400 years old, the mummified tissue found in the wolf is one of the youngest known woolly rhinoceros remains.Given our results, we suggest that any change at the genomic level associated with the species extinction must have taken place during the last few hundred years of the species' existence, the team added. We conclude that their decline toward extinction likely occurred rapidly after 14,400 years ago, most likely driven by rapid changes in environmental conditions. In other words, the last supper of a wolf that died when giant ice sheets still covered much of the Northern Hemisphere has opened a window into the rich heritage of this rhinocerosand the sudden downfall that awaited its relatives. And for anyone interested in cryptids, the authors note that the last appearance dates in the fossil record do not exclude the possibility that the species persisted for longer. Does this mean that woolly rhinos live on in some untrammeled wilderness to this day? Definitely not, they are dunzo. But it does raise the tantalizing question of when and where the last woolly rhino took its final steps, ending a long and storied line.In other newsSave wildlife, stay off the menuAlves, Dlete Cssia Vieira et al. Aspects of the blood meal of mosquitoes (Diptera: culicidae) during the crepuscular period in Atlantic Forest remnants of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution.Heres one way to get people to care about biodiversity loss: tell them that the mosquitos are out for their blood. In a new study, scientists captured and studied 145 engorged mosquitoes from a deforested area in Brazil, which revealed a growing reliance on human blood. The results suggest that mosquitoes are more likely to seek out human blood in areas experiencing biodiversity loss.In the present study, human blood meals were detected in nine species including mosquitoes that spread dengue, yellow fever, Zika, and chikungunya, said researchers led by Dlete Cssia Vieira Alves of the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro. The results revealed a clear tendency for the captured mosquito species to feed predominantly on humans.Deforestation reduces local biodiversity, causing mosquitoes, including vectors of pathogenic agents, to disperse and seek alternative food sourcessuch as humans, the team said.In other words, a future of biodiversity collapse is going to be buzzy, and itchy, and deadly, given that mosquitoes are notoriously the most dangerous animals to humanskilling roughly a million people per yeardue to their capacity to spread pathogens. It would be great if we could all conserve wildlife for solely altruistic reasons, but a little nightmare fuel is useful in small doses.Same-sex sexual behavior plays many roles in primatesCoxshall,Chlo et al. Ecological and social pressures drive same-sex sexual behaviour in non-human primates. Nature Ecology & Evolution.Same-sex sexual behavior (SSB) is common in naturedocumented in more than 1,500 animalsespecially among socially complex species like primates. Now, scientists have presented a comprehensive review of these sexual bonds in dozens of non-human primates, which revealed that the interactions are context-dependent and may serve a variety of evolutionary functions. In baboons, for example, females form affiliative networks, through grooming and possibly SSB, to manage group tension, especially during unstable periods such as hierarchical shifts, said researchers led by Chlo Coxshall of Imperial College London. Male rhesus macaques use SSB to navigate aggression and shifting dominance by forming coalitions. Those engaging in SSB are more likely to ally and support each other in competition. While the study focused on non-human primates, the team also speculated about the possible evolutionary links between SSB in humans and non-human primates, but warned that the study does not address human sexual orientation, identity or lived experience. While acknowledging that cultural biases have historically shaped how SSB is reported in animals, we hope this study encourages further research into its evolutionary and social roles in primates at large, the team concluded.Dont be deceived by the asexual yamsChen, Zhi and Chomicki, Guillaume et al. Berry Batesian mimicry enables bird dispersal of asexual bulbils in a yam. Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.Even in all of its diverse configurations, sex is simply not everyones bag. Lots of species have opted to eschew it entirely in favor of asexually cloning themselves, such as the Asian yam Dioscorea melanophyma. This yam has evolved a clever technique to disperse its version of bulbils, the asexual version of seeds, by dressing them up like berries so that birds will eat them, reports a new study. This helps the plant spread its clones far and wide without the need for sexual reproduction. We show that the yam Dioscorea melanophymawhich has lost sexual reproductionevolved black, glossy bulbils that mimic co-occurring black berries and entice frugivorous birds to ingest and disperse them, said researchers co-led by Zhi Chen of the Kunming Institute of Botany at the Chinese Academy of Science and Guillaume Chomicki of Durham University. The false berry bulbils of the yam. Image: Gao ChenThe team found that birds preferred real berries yet they significantly consumed bulbils too and could not visually discriminate bulbils from berries. In this way, the yams use mimicry to deceive birds and achieve longer dispersal distance, the study concludes. Its amazing how many adaptive strategies boil down to pranking ones fellow Earthlings. So if youre a bird, beware the sham yam yums. And if you are looking to name a band, the Asexual Yams is officially out there as an option. Thanks for reading!
