Behind the Blog: Chatbot 'Addiction' and a Reading List
This is Behind the Blog, where we share our behind-the-scenes thoughts about how a few of our top stories of the week came together. This week, we discuss wrestling over a good headline, what to read this summer, and Super 8 film.EMANUEL: I would really love it if the people who accuse us of using clickbait headlines saw how long, pedantic, and annoying our internal debates are about headlines for some stories. Case in point is Jasons story this week, which had the headline Judge Rules Training AI on Authors' Books Is Legal But Pirating Them Is Not.This is an important decision so it got covered everywhere. I dont think any of the other headlines I saw from other big publications are wrong, but they do reflect why it was hard to summarize this story in a headline, and different headlines reflect what different publications thought was most important and notable about it. If you want a full breakdown you should read Jasons story, but the gist is that a judge ruled that its okay for companies to use copyrighted books for their training data, but its not okay for them to get these books by pirating them, which many of them did. Thats the simplest way I can think of to sum it up and thats what our headline says, but there are still many levels of complexity to the story that no headline could fully capture.

Christians sued over PrEP coverage because it supports homosexual behavior. SCOTUS shut them down.
The Supreme Court ruled 6-3 in favor of a federal law that requires health insurers to provide coverage for preventative treatments recommended by a federal task force in Kennedy v. Braidwood. These treatments include PrEP, which a Christian company in Texas sued over, claiming that covering PrEP violates their freedom of religion because it encourages and facilitates homosexual behavior. The majority was ideologically diverse, with the Democratic appointees Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Ketanji Brown Jackson, and Elena Kagan joining with three of the Republican appointees Justices Brett Kavanaugh, John Roberts, and Amy Coney Barrett to protect the provision in the Affordable Care Act (ACA, also known as Obamacare). Related Supreme Court could let RFK decide whether your insurance company covers PrEP A company wanted to stop covering PrEP because it facilitates homosexual behavior. They could upend preventative care for everyone now. The ACA requires insurers to cover preventative care recommended by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, which, since 2019, includes PrEP, the medication regimen that can prevent the transmission of HIV. Braidwood Management sued over this recommendation, saying that they had a constitutional right not to provide coverage for PrEP because the business owners religion opposes homosexuality. Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Their argument, though, was that the task force itself wasnt legitimate and violated the Constitutions Appointments Clause. A lower court judge agreed, and an appeals court partly upheld his ruling, putting all of the task forces recommendations in jeopardy, which included prenatal nutritional supplements, physical therapy for older Americans to prevent falls, lung cancer screenings, and colo-rectal cancer screenings, preventative health care measures that save an estimated 10,000 to 20,000 lives a year. The rulings would have given the task forces authority to Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert Kennedy Jr. Kennedy has a long history of making false claims about HIV and AIDS, including spreading doubt about HIV causing AIDS and suggesting that AIDS is caused by poppers and a gay lifestyle, not a virus. The Biden administration appealed the decision to the Supreme Court, and the current administration maintained the same position that the Biden administration had taken, showing rare bipartisan agreement on an issue.Writing for the majority, Justice Brett Kavanaugh said that the Task Force members are not principal officers and therefore dont have to be appointed by the president and confirmed by the Senate. Instead, theyre inferior officers who can be appointed and removed by the HHS secretary. So Task Force members are supervised and directed by the Secretary, who in turn answers to the President, preserving the chain of command in Article II, Kavanaugh wrote. LGBTQ+ advocates welcomed the ruling. This decision means millions of Americans, for now, can breathe easier, knowing that critical preventive care remains within reachnot a luxury reserved for the privileged few, said HRC President Kelley Robinson in a statement. The LGBTQ+ community has historically faced societal and economic barriers that have worsened health outcomes and widened gaps in healthcare inequalitybarriers that have only grown worse as anti-equality lawmakers continue to attack our healthcare. While were pleased that the Supreme Court has blocked this attempt to create even more burdens on people seeking lifesaving care, we must remain vigilant. The HHS, under Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr, has exhibited an open hostility toward the health needs of LGBTQ+ people and has already undermined critical protections against HIV. We must continue to work to ensure everyone, no matter your sexual orientation, gender identity, race, income, or location, can access the care they need to thrive. The ruling comes the same day as the Supreme Courts ruling in Mahmoud v. Taylor, where the Court ruled that parents have a constitutional right to opt their kids out of discussions of LGBTQ+ people in schools.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

SCOTUS rules parents have a right to prevent their kids from reading books with LGBTQ+ characters
The Supreme Court has ruled in favor of the plaintiffs in Mahmoud v. Taylor, the case brought by parents who said that their First Amendment rights were violated when schools used books that included LGBTQ+ characters. The decision was 6-3 along ideological lines, with the Republican-appointed justices siding with the religious parents who wanted to opt their children out of reading books like Prince & Knight and Uncle Bobbys Wedding in the Montgomery County, Maryland, school system. Related The Supreme Court is about to let religion ruin public education Two recent cases suggest that the era of secular schools is coming to an end. The Court does not accept the Boards characterizations of the LGBTQ+-inclusive instruction as mere exposure to objectionable ideas or as lessons in mutual respect,' Justice Samuel Alito wrote for the majority. The storybooks unmistakably convey a particular viewpoint about same-sex marriage and gender. Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Regardless, the question in cases of this kind is whether the educational requirement or curriculum at issue would substantially interfere with the religious development of the child or pose a very real threat of undermining the religious beliefs and practices the parent wishes to instill in the child.Casting aside longstanding precedent, the Court invents a constitutional right to avoid exposure to subtle themes contrary to the religious principles that parents wish to instill in their children, Justice Sonia Sotomayor wrote in her dissenting opinion. Exposing students to the message that LGBTQ people exist, and that their loved ones may celebrate their marriages and life events, the majority says, is enough to trigger the most demanding form of judicial scrutiny. The case involved several sets of Christian and Muslim parents who objected to their kids reading books that mentioned LGBTQ+ people. The district had an opt-out policy that they later rescinded because, the district claimed, the opt-outs were becoming unworkable. Some parents in the district protested to get the opt-out policy reinstated, while others protested in favor of learning about LGBTQ+ people. The books geared to younger kids are just showing a diverse range of families, said Christina Celenza, a mother of a student in the district, during one of the 2023 protests. We have a two-mom household, so my wife and I are really proud and out, and, of course, my kid in kindergarten or pre-K is going to probably talk about his family and his two moms. The district didnt budge, so several parents sued. Two lower courts denied them a preliminary injunction, but the Supreme Court just granted them one. The parents want the courts to ultimately order teachers to notify them of every possible discussion where LGBTQ+ people may come up so that they could opt their children out, lest their kids learn that LGBTQ+ people exist. They claimed that knowing that LGBTQ+ people exist is contrary to their religious beliefs and violates their right to direct their childrens religious upbringing.Public education advocates warn that the ruling could lead to even more requests for opt-outs of public education on wide-ranging topics including Earth Day, critical thinking, and anti-drug programs. Free speech and LGBTQ+ advocates denounced the ruling. This ruling is a deeply disappointing blow to the right to read under the First Amendment, said U.S. Free Expression Programs staff attorney for PEN America Elly Brinkley in a statement. It is a fundamental betrayal of public schools duty to prepare students to live in a diverse and pluralistic society. By allowing parents to pull their children out of classrooms when they object to particular content, the justices are laying the foundation for a new frontier in the assault on books of all kinds in schools. While religious liberty is fundamentally important, it should not force public schools to exempt students from lessons that dont align with their families personal religious or cultural beliefs, said Equality California Executive Director Tony Hoang in a statement. LGBTQ+ themed books are already among the most banned and challenged in school districts and libraries across the country. Todays decision will make it even harder for these books to find their way into the hands of students who simply want to read and who may find validation and acceptance in the process.Todays ruling does not change schools obligation to prepare students to interact with and thrive in a diverse and ever-changing world, said GLAD Laws Mary L. Bonauto. LGBTQ+ people and families exist, students in our public schools have LGBTQ+ parents, and books that include LGBTQ+ people should not be treated differently than those without LGBTQ+ people. The Courts decision does not require our schools to abandon these efforts. Parents, students, educators, and neighbors can encourage opportunities for learning about diverse people and families by staying involved with school districts, school boards, and in our local communities.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

New The Bear Season Features Mutant Carmy Terrorizing Chicago After Falling Into Vat Of Beef Juice
CHICAGOWith the fourth season of the hit FX show now streaming, viewers reportedly tuned into new episodes of The Bear Wednesday and watched a mutant Carmen Berzatto terrorize Chicago after falling into a vat of beef juice. This year we decided to go in a different direction with Carmy, who has up until now been portrayed as an anxiety-ridden twentysomething chef who thrives on chaos, rather than as a hybrid human-meat creature of nightmarish proportions, show creator Christopher Storer said of Jeremy Allen Whites character, who in the season premiere undergoes a grotesque transformation after slippingor, spoiler, possibly being pushedoff some rickety ceiling rafters into a gurgling tank of Italian beef juice that has been left precariously uncovered by Carmys mistake-prone kitchen staff. This was an acting challenge for Jeremy, who essentially had to play a whole new role because Carmy is now a 60-foot-tall tangle of flesh and chuck roast hell-bent on destroying the city as he searches for more giardiniera to feast on. At the same time, he needed to maintain the nuance of an emotionally tormented prodigy grappling with the grief hidden somewhere deep inside the wet, pulsing French bread that has fused with his skin. Without giving too much away, fans can expect the usual kitchen drama as Carmy, now known to horrified onlookers as Mutant Beef Guy, struggles to balance his work life as a purveyor of fine dining with his personal life as an ungodly, succulent affront to nature, Storer continued. Prepare for your emotions to swell as Mutant Beef Guy watches Claire from the shadows, knowing she will never love him now that hes an abomination. Meanwhile, Sydney is the only person who can communicate with the grunting, massive regional delicacy and see the capacity for Michelin-level plating beyond his deformed exterior. As she struggles to cover for him in the kitchen, she must also fend off the evil sandwich poachers who want to place him in captivity. Saying they enjoyed the climactic showdown between Mutant Beef Guy and Dr. Sausage atop the Willis Tower, many viewers also praised the season four finales post-credit scene, which hints at a future spinoff in which the two join forces to fight hunger as The Combo. The post New The Bear Season Features Mutant Carmy Terrorizing Chicago After Falling Into Vat Of Beef Juice appeared first on The Onion.

Is AJ from 'The Ultimatum: Queer Love' a villain or did she just understand the assignment?
Spoilers for The Ultimatum: Queer Love season 2 episodes 1-3 follow. The first season of The Ultimatum: Queer Love was delightfully chaotic, bingeable, brain-rot TV viewing, and we were seated for every episode (why should the straights have all the fun with The Bachelor?). The first seven episodes of season 2 have just dropped, and the discourse about one messy masc has already started. For the uninitiated, the show features six couples who are all navigating an ultimatum in their relationship by dating other people who are in the same boat. One partner is ready for marriage, the other may have doubts," the official synopsis reads. "In just over eight weeks, each couple will either get married, or get out, after they each choose new potential partners in a life-changing opportunity to get a glimpse of two different futures."The first week of the show is dedicated to all of the couples splitting up into 12 singles and then dating each other, and AJ who was the recipient of the ultimatum from her partner Britney, takes full advantage of this, flirting her way through most of the cast. Even though the entire point of the first few episodes is to date around, AJ has faced a backlash both on the show and on social media. The complaints largely boil down to this: AJ is a player who led the other cast members on. (@) But AJ was just playing the game that the show sets up. They were supposed to date around, and she did. People on the cast are just mad shes better at it than they are. Shes a smooth-talking extrovert with big top energy, and a lot of them had hearts in their eyes every time they looked at her. Both Bridget and Marita get angry and confront AJ when they are all deciding who they want to shack up with for a trial relationship, and AJ doesnt pick them.Admittedly, AJ seems a little glib when shes talking directly to the camera in her confessionals, but technically she didnt actually do anything wrong, and even admits to wanting to play the field, hilariously calling herself a hoochie daddy without the shorts. Everyone was quick to label AJ a villain, but she just understood the assignment. You know, the one where they were supposed to date a lot of people. (@) The internet has also had a lot to say about AJ, accusing her of love bombing and being a massive f*ckboy, and that shes just saying bullshit to get the women to fall for her.Counterpoint: Shes just a good flirt! She identifies what a woman is into quickly and uses that to flirt with her. She locked in on the fact that Marita wanted to be romanced, and that being open about sex was important to Bridget. But Bridget did the exact same thing. She supposedly had a connection with AJ, but was also disappointed that Pilar picked Kyle instead of her, before Bridget finally landed on Ashley for her trial marriage, whom she also dated and liked. Sounds like she was dating around and flirting with a lot of people. Why does that sound familiar? And its not AJs fault Marita put all her eggs in one basket it also seems like she just picked the first person who used the word romance on a date. (@) Watching it back, it was kind of crazy to see that, that people thought that I was like, in a way, plotting to get to get with certain people, AJ recently told PRIDE, like I never went around telling people you should choose me, pick me as your number one. The fact that people already had that in their hearts and wanted to go on more dates with me, like I honestly thought that was a little surprising.Again, admittedly, AJ confessing at the end of episode 3 that she could see herself marrying her brand-spanking new trial partner is wild when youre the one who was afraid to get married. You dont know each other! Britney deserves better. Also, why is no one talking about how Dayna tried to convince Magan that leaving the show because she was uncomfortable was quitting their relationship, and pressured her to stay on? And she seems completely indifferent to the fact that Dayna is struggling with gaining acceptance of her queer identity from her conservative Lebanese family. AJ might be messy, but there are actual villains on this show.

Gay veterans love story has the internet in tears: Hes just done so much for this country
The story of a gay Vietnam veteran and his late husband went viral earlier this year, highlighting the experience of queer vets and bringing the internet to tears in the process. As 21-year-old Audri Pettirosi explained to People, after meeting her great uncle, Marshall Belmaine, for the first time last year and learning about his story, she felt compelled to share it on social media. Her March 13 TikTok post described his military service during the Vietnam War and his subsequent journey toward coming out and falling in love with his husband, Albert Wakefield. Related A majority of Americans still support transgender people serving in the military Republican opposition accounts for decline in recent years, according to Gallup. Hes just done so much for this country and for the gay community, Pettirosi told People about her uncle. Its just a very important story that I feel like really needs to be told. Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today According to the magazine, Belmaine dropped out of high school due to anti-gay bullying and joined the Marine Corps in 1965. He remained in the closet throughout his military career and recounted facing homophobia from his family, including his half-brother, Pettirosis grandfather. While serving in Vietnam, Belmaine was hurt in 1967 and earned a Purple Heart for his attempts to save a fellow marine. He later went on to serve in the Caribbean and at Fort Meade, Maryland, eventually working for the National Security Agency before being honorably discharged in 1969. Returning to Massachusetts, he found work as a janitor, in factories, and at a laundromat.Pettirosi explained that she erroneously mentioned in her TikTok album that Belmaine and Wakefield, an Army veteran, met while both were still serving. In fact, the couple met at a bar in 1971. Five years later, Belmaine came out. The couple moved to South Florida in 1999 and married in 2015 following the Supreme Courts landmark ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges, which extended the legal right to same-sex marriage in all 50 states. As Pettirosi noted in her TikTok post, the couple dedicated themselves to LGBTQ+ activism in the 80s and 90s. They also advocated for LGBTQ+ veterans, with Belmaine serving as the president of American Veterans for Equal Rights. We joined about 27 different organizations, Belmaine told People. When everybody was going out on a Friday or Saturday night, having fun, we were in a meeting fighting for civil rights.Pettirosis TikTok about her uncle has received nearly 70,000 likes since March and has been viewed over 585,000 times. Commenters have reported shedding tears over Belmaines story.Im a Marine that served when it was illegal to be gay and serve, one user wrote. Semper Fi to your uncle! As a Marine Vet, I can tell you there are a lot more of these stories out there that should be told, another commented.Others shared stories of their own and family members experiences both in Vietnam and as closeted marines, while also expressing gratitude for Belmaines service and for the fact that he was ultimately able to find love and live truthfully.I read through basically all the comments, Pettirosi said, and it was just so amazing to see these people just being like, Thank your uncle for us. He is a true American hero, and thank you for sharing his story. Both Belmaine and Pettirosi said they are still fighting for LGBTQ+ rights. While neither explicitly called out the president, who signed a January executive order banning transgender people from the military, they both expressed concern about the current political climate. Theres no room for hate in this world, Pettirosi said, and we got to stand up for whats right.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

What is a twunk? The post-twink terminology, explained
From twinks to daddies, otters to bears, queer slang has a descriptor for just about every type of gay man you could imagine. Some of these can apply for all, or most, of a man's adult life, whereas others tend to have a natural starting or stopping point. So what happens when a twink is no longer a twink? Enter the twunk. What is a twunk? (@) To understand twunks, one must first understand twinks. A twink, for the rare reader who may not be familiar with the term, is generally a slender, young gay man with little-to-no facial or body hair. Some have used it in recent years to describe men who match the physical characteristics but are straight or haven't publicly shared their sexuality. But in its most accurate form, it does refer to queer men though some non-binary folks embrace the label, too.A twunk is what happens when that twink either bulks up a bit, ages out of the 1825 range (or 18-29, depending on who you ask), or both. They still read as youthful, still lean on the slender and smoother side (hairless chests reign supreme), but theyve added some muscle masswhether from a serious workout routine or just the natural arc of getting older. The "twink" descriptor is still visible, but its no longer the full story.Where does 'twunk' come from? from askgaybrosAs one might assume, the word "twunk" comes from a portmanteau of "twink" and "hunk." The precise origins of this slang are unknown, but it's been around for some time. What is 'twink death?' (@) The concept of twink death is sometimes used alongside twunk or other descriptors. Essentially, it just means that a former twink has shed or outgrown his old physique and graduated on to being a twunk, a DILF, or something else entirely. It's a tongue-in-cheek way of mourning the twink that once was, ahead of embracing their newly transformed self.Is 'twunk' a slur? (@) Twunk is not a slur.Any word can be used in a pejorative way, especially by people out to attack the LGBTQ+ community. The word twink has certainly been lobbed at young gay men in a negative fashion many times, prompting tons of debate over the years as to whether it should be used at all. As a subcategory of twink, twunk likely faces some of the same scrutiny. But at its core, twunk is just another word queer people use to describe themselves and others within the community. If someone doesnt want to be called a twunk, thats valid. But broadly speaking, its fair game.

Everything You Need in Your Ultimate Pride Month Starter Kit (Yes, Glitter Included)
Pride Month is like queer Christmas, minus the stress of gift wrapping and plus a whole lot more thigh. Whether youre a Pride first-timer or a seasoned veteran with fan-snapping wrist strength, you need to be prepared. And what better way than with the ultimate Pride Month Starter Kit?Heres everything you actually need to serve face, protect your phone, flirt with your ex, and make it to July with glitter still in your scalp.1. Glitter, But Make It BiodegradableWe love the planet almost as much as we love looking fabulous, so please make your sparkle sustainable. Biodegradable glitter is the way to go, because the only thing toxic at Pride should be your exs texts.Photo: Writopia Lab2. Jean OverallsSummers here, and the flannels have been laid to rest. Enter: the timeless lesbian classic, jean overalls with a crisp white or black tee underneath. Functional, flirtatious, and with just enough side gap to get a sunburn on your ribcage. We love a seasonal switch-up.3. A Fan That Snaps Louder Than Your Exs ApologiesYoure not at Pride unless youre dramatically snapping open a folding fan every time someone dares to block your breeze. Bonus points if it says WERK, HOT MESS, or NO THANKS. Shade isnt just encouraged, its tradition.Photo: The Gay Fan Club4. A Grindr Premium SubscriptionPride is Grindrs Super Bowl. Go ahead and unlock that premium for the weekend, you deserve it. Who needs a map when you can see whos three feet away, shirtless, and looking? Remember to hydrate before you misbehave.5. Poppers (For When the Beat, and the Boys, Drop)Yes, darling, we went there. If youre entering a dark room, dancing in a sweaty crowd, or just need a sudden personality reset, poppers are practically Pride cologne. Just remember: not all nostrils were created equal. Sniff responsibly.Photo: Alamy6. Your Chosen FamilyMore important than any crop top or glitter bomb is the crew you roll with. Whether its your ride-or-die queer besties, your drag mom, or your favorite chaotic cousin, Pride is best served with people who get you and wont judge you for crying during Robyn.7. A Signature LookThis isnt the time to blend in. Think rhinestones, mesh, booty shorts, and body glitter. Or if thats not your vibe, go full cottagecore lesbian or queer-coded anime villain. The assignment is: Be seen from space.Photo: ICT Award8. Your Favorite Diva Repped Proudly on a Cropped T-ShirtWhether its Beyonc, Gaga, Ariana, Cher, or a deep-cut Mariah moment, your diva allegiance must be made known. Bonus points if its a bootleg tee from Etsy that says Mother in bold font across the chest. Respect your elders.9. Crossbody Bag That Says Try Me, ThiefLook, we love a tiny short with no pockets. But shady characters love them even more. Pride events are packed, and the last thing you want is to realize your phones gone right after sending a risky text to your situationship. A secure, zipped, crossbody bag is cute and practical. Slay, but safely.Photo: DH Club10. A Signature Gay Playlist That Pleases the Girls, Gays, and TheysThis isnt just any playlist, its THE event playlist. Its Charli XCX followed by Kylie followed by RuPaul followed by The Climb just to make everyone cry a little. Your aux cord is a sacred weapon. Trixie Mattels New Gay HBO Max Song is So Camp and We Arent Mad
Just when you thought Pride Month 2025 couldnt get any gayer, Trixie Mattel has entered the chatdisco ball in hand and TV references locked and loaded. The drag superstar and DJ just dropped a fabulously campy new anthem titled Gay HBO Max Song, in collaboration with Warner Bros. Discovery and HBO Max, aimed at celebrating queer joy, community, and the chaotic brilliance of premium cable TV.The single hit streaming platforms on Friday, June 27, just in time to round out Pride Month with a glittering bang. Released alongside a cheeky music video, the song is part celebration, part satire, and all love letter to the queer fans who have turned shows like Euphoria, The White Lotus, and Sex and the City into unofficial gay scripture.A Camp Classic in the MakingGay HBO Max Song is everything youd expect from a Trixie Mattel Pride trackand then some. Think shimmering synths, heavy bass, tongue-in-cheek humor, and references that only the LGBTQ+ community could elevate into viral, meme-worthy moments. Whether its Jennifer Coolidges immortal scream These gays are trying to kill me! from The White Lotus or Sydney Sweeneys emotional Ive never been happier! from Euphoria, the song pulls together the most iconic one-liners from HBO Maxs most quotable shows.Whats more impressive than the references themselves is how naturally theyre folded into the track. Trixie doesnt just use the quotesshe reclaims them. These moments, many of which were never meant to be queer per se, have been lovingly recontextualized by LGBTQ+ fans over time. Now, theyre canon.Whatever Happened to Fun?That question, famously posed by Carrie Bradshaw on Sex and the City, gets a remix of its own in the trackand serves as a sly thesis statement for the whole affair. The song isnt just a Pride month release; its a celebration of camp, of queer media literacy, and of the special kind of joy that comes from gathering your chosen family around the couch to scream-laugh at emotionally unstable characters and opulent drama.Trixie has made a name for herself not just in the world of drag, but in music. With albums blending folk, pop, and 80s synth nostalgiaand a personality thats equal parts Dolly Parton and John WatersTrixies brand of musical storytelling is tailor-made for a song like this.A Corporate Collab That Actually Slaps?Lets be real: most corporate Pride campaigns in 2025 feel like recycled rainbow clip art and safe slogans. But this one hits different. Instead of simply slapping a rainbow on a logo, HBO Max (which, funnily enough, may soon rebrand again) leaned into queer fandom with actual authenticityand absurdity. If HBO Max is the canvas, the queer community has painted it with memes, mashups, TikToks, fan theories, and an endless appetite for dramatics. Gay HBO Max Song is a campy thank-you note that recognizes that cultural labor.Trixie Mattel, Forever the Cultural TouchstoneTrixie Mattels influence continues to extend far beyond RuPauls Drag Race. Shes become a cultural architect in her own rightturning wigs and wit into Emmy nominations, charting albums, a successful makeup brand, a Palm Springs motel, and now, a viral musical tribute to HBO Max. Shes also one of the few queens who can straddle both niche LGBTQ+ spaces and the broader pop culture universe.I wanted to make something that was not just for Pride, Trixie said in a behind-the-scenes clip. This is for every time a gay person says, Remember that episode where Miranda wore the diaper bag as a purse? I wanted this song to feel like flipping through queer Tumblr in 2013but make it now, and make it sparkle.Source

The Aces Announce Gold Star Baby A New Glittering Queer Disco-Pop Album
The Aces are ready to throw the most fabulous party of the summer and everyones invited. The all-queer pop quartet announced today that their highly anticipated fourth studio album, Gold Star Baby, will be released August 15 via SoundOn. With a shimmer-drenched disco-pop aesthetic, powerful queer representation, and a focus on joy and freedom, Gold Star Baby promises to be this years sapphic sonic celebration.Coinciding with the announcement, The Aces also dropped their third single from the album, You Got Me, available for streaming now. A heart-bursting, love-drunk anthem, the track captures the electric rush of falling for someone and the fear of saying the words out loud until you just cant help yourself.A Disco-Pop Sanctuary for Queer JoyIf their introspective 2023 album, Ive Loved You For So Long, was about grappling with identity and vulnerability, Gold Star Baby is its glittery, liberated counterpart. According to the band, the record is a metaphorical club in every city, a secret space known only to those who truly need it a pulsing dancefloor where queer joy reigns and nothing else matters. Its a strutting, disco ball bowling serve something undeniably different but also inescapably brilliant, said one reviewer, praising the bands daring new sonic direction. With influences that evoke early 2000s pop divas like the Pussycat Dolls and Spice Girls, The Aces bring a fresh, sapphic spin to an otherwise nostalgic soundscape. The band describes Gold Star Baby as disco-pop that fills the holes in our hearts, where fantasy meets emotional truth and every beat is an invitation to dance or cry, or both. You Got Me New Single Out NowThe latest single from the album, You Got Me, is a dreamy, danceable love letter to that moment just before you confess your feelings when youre floating in uncertainty but totally intoxicated by the possibility. This song is about that short and sweet period of time when you realize youre in love but youre not sure how to tell them, the band shared in a statement. We wanted it to sound like the feeling of falling in love warm, shimmery, bouncy and a little bit of nerves. The track is the third to be released from the upcoming album, following The Magic and Jealous, which have already earned praise for their sharp lyrics, addictive melodies, and palpable confidence. With You Got Me, The Aces are three for three and fans are counting the days until they can hear the rest of the album.Behind the Music: Who Are The Aces?Comprised of sisters Cristal and Alisa Ramirez (lead vocals/guitar and drums), Katie Henderson (lead guitar/vocals), and McKenna Petty (bass), The Aces formed in Utah and have been making waves in the indie-pop and queer music scenes since their 2017 debut. Known for their infectious energy, tight harmonies, and unabashed love for the LGBTQ+ community, the band has carved out a unique space in modern pop music. With over 250 million streams and three albums under their belt, The Aces are more confident than ever. Their music isnt just for queer listeners but it centers them, creating space where sapphic stories are told without apology and with full glitter-fueled joy.A Festival-Filled Summer AheadFans wont have to wait until August to see the band live. The Aces are hitting the festival circuit this summer, with upcoming performances at Summerfest in Milwaukee, as well as All Things Go festivals in both New York and Washington, D.C.They recently opened for Chappell Roan at Kentucky Pride and supported Goth Babe on a U.S. tour. With a reputation for electric live shows and devoted fans (especially among LGBTQ+ listeners), their upcoming festival sets are expected to be highlights of the season.Stay tuned for more tour dates to be announced including a likely fall headline tour supporting Gold Star Baby.Aesthetic, Art, and IdentityThe albums artwork shot by celebrated photographer Dana Trippe further emphasizes the bands commitment to queer glam. From high-gloss visual storytelling to euphoric dancefloor-ready choruses, Gold Star Baby is a total-package era for The Aces. Its the feeling of hitting the town with your closest group of friends, with the perfect buzz going, in the new outfit youve been scheming up to command any room youre in, the band explains. This record is us on the other side lighter, freer, and ready to have a damn good time.Pre-Save Gold Star Baby NowReady to fall in love with The Aces all over again? Gold Star Baby drops August 15, but fans can pre-save the album now via SoundOn.And dont forget to stream You Got Me today because nothing says summer romance like queer disco-pop and a chorus you can scream with your whole chest.Source
