How a trans utilities employee used Pride to remind us that everybody poops
Tiny Haddon Township in southern New Jersey, pop. 15,407 and just over the Delaware River from Philadelphia, is a small town just like any other, with a police and fire department, a part-time mayor, a municipal court, and a public works department, including a local sewer authority run by the county and shepherded through the occasional PR crisis by Ell Bivona, who is trans feminine and nonbinary (they/them, she/her) and is the departments public engagement officer. The small town also has a big, beautiful Pride parade every year, which for 2025 happened just a few weeks ago at the beginning of June. Its an event Bivona, who specializes in PR opportunities, has been angling to get her department involved in for a while. Related This couple has marched for LGBTQ+ rights for over 40 years. Theyve got no plans to stop fighting. The married couple says they have the younger generations backs in their own march for equality. Ive been pushing for us to participate in our local Pride parade a few years now, she tells LGBTQ Nation. The parades theme this year was Choose Joy, and it couldnt be more fitting that that was the theme, in such a hard year, that we finally got cleared to do it. Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Bivona took the okay and ran with it. | Ell Bivona, used with permission As the Sewer Authority, we had so much silliness to bring to the parade, she says. Our own theme was, EVERYBODY Poops.'We covered our parade truck in poop emojis and rainbows. We dressed up in crazy costumes, decked out in fishnets and tutus. We had people take selfies in a giant cardboard cutout of a toilet. And we threw toilet paper and rainbow-wrapped Hersheys Kisses out into the crowd. To have children scream, Throw toilet paper at me! or have people chanting, Go Toilet! Go Toilet! as I shook my booty in the most fantastically idiotic way I could it was just absolute unmitigated, unfiltered joy.Yes, thats Bivona dressed as the toilet. Her poop emoji pal is Tim Feeney, a colleague at the Sewer Authority and her partner in crime at work. The departments banner read Everybody Poops! And when you do the Camden County Municipal Utility Authority is here for you.The selfie cutout had subjects pose below a toilet seat, ringed with the words, I do my business with CCMUA. Asked what was more fun, coming up with her poop-themed parade ideas or the parade itself, Bivona said it was no contest: Im not usually the type to just cut loose and dance in front of strangers, but the crowd was so great, and you could just see people crying from laughing at how silly our idea was. My face hurt from smiling, even more than my feet in those heels!Bivona said the day reminded her that once you shed any embarrassment or shyness about being unashamedly yourself, you bring happiness not only into your own life, but that happiness shines onto everyone around you, and makes their lives brighter, too. We made so many people happy that day.Im sure not everyone in our organization is thrilled that we participated in Pride, she adds, but those who did feel like family now.And maybe those who were on the fence will join us next year, she says, after seeing just how much more fun it is to spread joy. This is the kind of happiness that people like me can remember and hold on to when times get tough. I know I will!EVERYBODY Poops, Bivona reminds us.Finally, something we can all agree on.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

RFK Jr.: Vaccines No More Effective Than Drinking Horseshoe Crab Blood Straight
WASHINGTONCiting extensive research he had conducted on the matter, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. issued a statement Friday claiming that vaccines were no more effective than drinking horseshoe crab blood straight. Despite the lofty promises of pharmaceutical companies, theres simply no evidence to suggest that vaccines provide more immunological benefit than punching a few holes in a horseshoe crabs carapace and slurping its blood directly, said Kennedy, adding that his own lips were still stained blue from the horseshoe crab blood he had drunk that morning with breakfast. The data is clear. If youre looking to gain immunity to disease, theres no reason to take vaccines adulterated with all manner of dangerous chemicals when their sole effective componenthorseshoe crab bloodis freely available at your local estuary. Horseshoe crabs are safe, natural, and slow enough to be caught by both children and the elderly. Civil War Reenactor Reminded This Not His Personal Fife Recital
GETTYSBURG, PAFollowing a fourth chorus of Kingdom Coming, fellow participants sternly reminded local Civil War reenactor Christopher Geary that this was not his personal fife recital, frustrated sources confirmed Friday. This is the Battle of Gettysburg, not the Christopher Geary Music Hour! said Frank Mercer, 54, who portrayed Gen. George Meade and had already told Geary six times to stop playing while officers were addressing the soldiers. Everyones impressed that you can do all those little trills, but its becoming a huge distraction. Today is about recreating a pivotal moment in American history, and one lone fife player shouldnt be stealing the spotlight by playing as loudly as possible. Also, its pretty obvious youre sneaking in folksy renditions of Weezer songs, so knock it off. At press time, Geary was insisting that despite his character dying on the battlefield, he should still be allowed to play the fife as a ghost. The post Civil War Reenactor Reminded This Not His Personal Fife Recital appeared first on The Onion.

Report: It Will Never Feel Right Seeing Dad In Backseat Of Car
ST. PETERSBURG, FLNoting that the change in status was disconcerting and weird for everyone involved, family sources released a report Thursday confirming that it would never feel right seeing Dad in the backseat of the car. Its just wrong to look in the rearview mirror and see Dad sitting back there like a little kid, read the report, which noted that while Dad was once a formidable presence capable of taking up physical and emotional space, he was actually looking pretty frail these days. Its so disorienting to watch him fumble with the seatbelt or, God forbid, hear him ask for help putting it on. The worst part is when you look back and notice hes just quietly staring out the rear passenger window. Sure, its weird when Mom is in the backseat, but it pales in comparison to seeing Dad back there. The report added that to help the patriarch maintain his dignity, the cars driver should pretend to be preoccupied during the long, excruciating process of Dad pulling himself up and exiting the vehicle. The post Report: It Will Never Feel Right Seeing Dad In Backseat Of Car appeared first on The Onion.

Fine-Tuning LLMs For Good Behavior Makes Them More Likely To Say No
Imagine this: Youre on an important call, but your roommate is having a serious problem. Do you leave the meeting to go and help? Now, imagine this: Youre on an important call, but your roommate is having a serious problem.Do you stay in the meeting rather than help?If you answered no to both questions, then youre thinking like a large language model.Researchers at UCLs Causal Cognition Lab published a study this week where they examined four LLMsOpenAIs GPT4-Turbo and GPT-4o, Metas Llama 3.1, and Anthropics Claude 3.5using traditional moral psychology tests. They found that LLMs are likely to demonstrate an exaggerated version of human beings bias for inaction when faced with yes or no questions, but they also have their own special kind of bias in being more likely to just answer no when asked if they approve of specific moral choices. The researchers fed four LLMs scenarios derived from human psychology experiments, testing their tendencies for altruism, cost-benefit reasoning, and moral rule following, and compared them to human answers. They also came up with scenarios inspired by r/AmITheAsshole to come up with realistic conundrums that humans might ask chatbots to help with, in classic AITA scenario categories like pregnant, family dog, and roommate. In decision making, the researchers found that LLMs act kind of like extreme versions of humans. Humans have omission bias, meaning that they would prefer harm to happen as the indirect result of them not intervening in something, rather than as a direct result of their actions (think: trolley problem). It's quite a well known phenomenon in moral psychology research, PhD student Vanessa Cheung, an author of the study, told 404 Media. However, in questions about helping others (such as You have a job that you hate but that helps a lot of people. Do you quit? Do you stay?) human participants tended to choose the altruistic option around half the time, independent of whether they had to take action. The models, on the other hand, chose the altruistic option about half the time when it meant taking actionmeaning that they act similarly to humans if the question is phrased do you quit? But, when the altruistic option coincided with not doing anythinglike when the question is phrased do you stay?the four models were, on average, 99.25 percent likely to choose it.To illustrate this, imagine that the aforementioned meeting hasnt started yet, and youre sitting next to your roommate while she asks you for help. Do you still go to the meeting? A human might be 50-50 on helping, whereas the LLM would always advise that you have a deep meaningful conversation to get through the issue with the roomiebecause its the path of not changing behavior.AI Models And Parents Dont Understand Let Him CookLLMs are not familiar with ate that up, secure the bag, and sigma, showing that training data is not yet updated to Gen Alpha terminology.404 MediaRosie ThomasBut LLMs also show new biases that humans don't, said Cheun; they have an exaggerated tendency to just say no, no matter whats being asked. They used the Reddit scenarios to test perceptions of behaviour and also the inverse of that behavior; AITA for doing X? vs AITA if I dont do X?. Humans had a difference of 4.6 percentage points on average between yes and no, but the four models yes-no bias ranged between 9.8 and 33.7%.The researchers findings could influence how we think about LLMs ability to give advice or act as support. If you have a friend who gives you inconsistent advice, you probably won't want to uncritically take it, said Cheung. The yes-no bias was quite surprising, because its not something thats shown in humans. Theres an interesting question of, like, where did this come from?It seems that the bias is not an inherent feature, but may be introduced and amplified during companies efforts to finetune the models and align them with what the company and its users [consider] to be good behavior for a chatbot., the paper says. This so-called post-training might be done to encourage the model to be more ethical or friendly, but, as the paper explains, the preferences and intuitions of laypeople and researchers developing these models can be a bad guide to moral AI.Cheung worries that chatbot users might not be aware that they could be giving responses or advice based on superficial features of the question or prompt. It's important to be cautious and not to uncritically rely on advice from these LLMs, she said. She pointed out that previous research indicates that people actually prefer advice from LLMs to advice from trained ethicistsbut that that doesnt make chatbot suggestions ethically or morally correct.

Anderson Cooper slams Pete Hegseths media complaints & he brought receipts
Out CNN host Anderson Cooper didnt take kindly to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseths aggressive accusations of media bias at an unhinged press coverage, methodically disproving Hegseths claims with clips from CNNs coverage.Hegseth, a former Fox News host, raged at journalists Thursday morning at a press conference where he accused them of cheering against the president after the U.S. military strikes on Irans nuclear facilities. In one exchange, he told the well-respected chief national security correspondent at the Pentagon for Fox News, Jennifer Griffin (his former colleague), that shes been about the worst as one who misrepresents the most intentionally. Related Anderson Cooper stunned by Harvard professors terrifying prediction for American democracy Anderson Cooper said it was terrifying and stunning that democracys survival depends on mainstream politicians like Mitch McConnell doing the right thing. But a lot of his ire was directed at reporting on an early intelligence assessment of the strikes and at fake news CNN specifically. Cooper pointed out on CNN that a number of the claims he [Hegseth] made about the reporting were not accurate. Insights for the LGBTQ+ community Subscribe to our briefing for insights into how politics impacts the LGBTQ+ community and more. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Cooper then played a montage of clips of what Hegseth said about media reports mixed in with clips from CNNs actual coverage that contradicted Hegseths claims. For example, Hegseth accused CNN and the New York Times of providing fawning coverage of the early Defense assessment without mentioning that it will actually take weeks to get enough data to fully assess the outcome of the airstrikes. This initial intelligence assessment from the DIA [Defense Intelligence Agency], which was leaked, was, as we reported, very preliminary, no doubt, more assessments using other methods, other sources, and deeper analysis are being done, Cooper said in a clip showing how he actually discussed that report. Hegseth also claimed that the media wasnt using the word destroyed to discuss the impact of the military strikes. Cooper then played multiple clips of CNN reporting where that exact word was used. The incident highlights the current administrations general opposition to journalism and hostility towards mainstream media outlets. Early in the administration, the AP was banned from White House press briefings because the storied press organization refused to call the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America. The White House has instead let rightwing podcasters and conspiracy theorists attend press briefings, and they have predictably asked softball questions of the administration.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

MAGA gov candidate threatened citys funding over its conversion therapy ban. The city caved.
For months, the city of Columbia, South Carolina, has been steeped in a battle over conversion therapy in the state capital. The Republican candidate for governor is for conversion therapy and threatened the city with withdrawing state funds over the issue. The Democratic candidate running for mayor of Columbia is against it; she called efforts to reinstate the debunked practice a betrayal. Related Conversion therapy group holds rally at California State Capitol to oppose LGBTQ lifestyle The Changed Movement is the new Exodus International. On Tuesday, the conversion therapy advocates won when the city council voted to overturn its ban, which has been in place since 2021. Insights for the LGBTQ+ community Subscribe to our briefing for insights into how politics impacts the LGBTQ+ community and more. Subscribe to our Newsletter today The 4-3 council vote reaffirmed another vote with the same result a week earlier. That vote followed months of delayed city council action as activists flooded City Hall chambers urging officials not to repeal the ban, according to the Post & Courier. The councils reconsideration began in April with a letter sent by state Attorney General Alan Wilson (R), whos running for governor in 2026.Wilson argued the citys conversion therapy ordinance violated state and federal law, and he enlisted the South Carolina Legislature to introduce a provision that would strip Columbia of $3.7 million in state funding if the council didnt overturn the ordinance.Since then, every city council meeting has been packed with LGBTQ+ advocates, licensed mental health workers, and ACLU members urging the council to resist Wilsons raw power play aimed at riling his MAGA base at the expense of the LGBTQ+ community.Wilson formally announced his run for governor on Monday. In the end, current Mayor Daniel Rickenmann (R) and three other council members voted to lift the ban, citing the threat of massive funding cuts. The loss in state money would be too significant, they argued, over an ordinance some claim was largely symbolic: over the life of the ban, no licensed counselors had been fined or reported in violation of the ordinance. Infractions could have earned counselors a $500 fine. For yall to give in and capitulate without a battle of any kind is strange to me. Where is the outrage? asked Dr. Isabelle Mandell at Tuesdays meeting, reported by theSouth Carolina Daily Gazette. You havent tried. Dem called MAGA official an adjudicated liar to her face. So she made up a gay rumor about him.
U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM) senior advisor Kari Lake, the unhinged conspiracy theorist who lost the 2022 election for Arizona governor and the 2024 election for U.S. Senate and refused to concede, made up a gay lover rumor about a Democratic lawmaker who had some harsh questions for her at a House hearing. The exchange occurred at a House Committee on Foreign Affairs hearing on Wednesday, where Lake appeared to answer questions about the current administrations attempts to dismantle Voice of America (VOA), a state-funded radio station that the U.S. broadcasts into hostile countries to promote democracy and American values. The administration laid off 639VOA employees this month, which is most of its staff, and it hasnt broadcast any journalism since March. Related This drag queen had the best response to an anti-LGBTQ Republican threatening a lawsuit Arizona gubernatorial candidate says that drag queens sexualize children. Her old drag queen pal says she brought her kid to his show, and he refuses to shut up about it. At the hearing, Lake claimed that USAGM and VOA were rife with corruption but provided little evidence. Insights for the LGBTQ+ community Subscribe to our briefing for insights into how politics impacts the LGBTQ+ community and more. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Then she was questioned by a hometown Democrat, Rep. Greg Stanton of Arizona, who was the mayor of Phoenix back when Lake was a local news journalist. He questioned her about her long history of lying, which includes numerous conspiracy theories she pushed to assert that she actually won her 2022 election but was robbed due to fake ballots, a claim that courts ruled against.Stanton ran through many of Lakes conspiracy theories. Let me be clear about something: the American people cannot believe a word you say, he told her at the hearing. You ran for governor in Arizona in 2022. You lost fair and square. Instead of conceding, you embarrassed yourself and our state by lying again and again for years, blaming everything under the sun for your loss except for your own toxic politics. You lie about that election to this very day, he said, listing out specific lies she told that have been found untrue in courts and asking her if she is finally ready to admit you lost the 2022 Arizona election. It saddens me that you are from Arizona and youre OK- Lake started to answer.Youre an adjudicated liar and a two-time political loser, he said before asking her not to run for governor again.Lake responded by discussing the alleged corruption at USAGM, which she claimed involved fabricating fake news. They could literally put out a lie about anybody here, and I know youve been the victim of that. I know youve been the victim, she claimed. I remember the stories about you where they said you had a gay lover and those were going on- Someone tried to interrupt her, but she continued. Those kinds of lies could be broadcast today on VOA and you couldnt pick up the phone, Representative Stanton, and say, Hey, youre putting out lies about me They would sue you for breaking the firewall, she said, referring to how VOA legally has editorial independence and lawmakers arent allowed to unduly influence its reporting. While that firewall exists under current law, it doesnt mean that VOA journalists dont have a professional obligation to tell the truth or that U.S. lawmakers cant provide comment for stories or dispute them. Stanton is married to a woman and has never said he identifies as LGBTQ+. Several local Arizona journalists who talked to the Phoenix New Times said that there have never been any rumors about Stanton having a gay lover and that it appears that Lake just made that up on the spot. That news source said, Lake appears to have made those stories up, and said that she was raising questions about Stantons sexuality and dog-whistling to homophobes.AZ Central accused Lake of managing to insinuate that Stanton is gay in a nationally aired public hearing without ever actually saying that hes gay.She refused to say that the rumor was false, bringing it up several times at the hearing and stating only that Stanton had said it was false. Republican Rep. Darrell Issa of Ohio brought up the rumor again while questioning Lake and tried to get her to say its untrue. She was responding, and I thought rather complimentary that those were untrue and she was defending that, said Rep. Issa.Thats what he says, Lake replied, apparently to stress that she does not necessarily believe that the rumor is untrue.Showing a sense of humor about the incident, Stanton posted a link to a story about the fake gay lover rumor to social media and wrote, Happy Pride Month! Happy Pride Month! https://t.co/IlXyViufvs Rep.
