THEONION.COMI Used To Work Here, Says Pete Buttigieg, WanderingOnto Busy HighwayTRAVERSE CITY, MICasually strolling from the shoulder of the road and into traffic, former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg reportedly spoke the words I used to work here Thursday morning as he wandered onto a busy highway near his home.Hey guys, remember me? Buttigieg said while flashing a grin and waving cheerfully at a bus on U.S. Route 31, where dozens of cars and trucks swerved around him, their drivers shouting expletives and honking their horns. These are my old stomping grounds. It was the first real job I ever had, you know? These white dotted lines havent changed one bit. Hey, whys everyone in such a hurry? Doesnt anyone want to come say hi? I brought fresh gasoline!Buttigieg was then seen crossing over to the median, where he shook a hoof and introduced himself to a large piece of bloodied roadkill. The post I Used To Work Here, Says Pete Buttigieg, WanderingOnto Busy Highway appeared first on The Onion.0 Comments 0 Shares 0 Views 0 Reviews

THEONION.COMGroup Of Teen Girls Convinces JD Vance To Kill HimselfWASHINGTONLighting up his phone night and day with their cruel taunts, a group of teenage girls reportedly convinced Vice President JD Vance to kill himself Tuesday. Everyone I know thinks youre so gross, 16-year-old Bailey Hayworth said in a video message she sent to Vance, causing the vice president of the United States to throw himself on his bed as he contemplated ending everything just to stop the constant stream of barbs from the high school sophomore and her mean friends on the junior varsity volleyball teamAbigail, Paige, Payton, and Sofia. Seriously, where do you even find a suit like that? Youre ugly and irrelevant. If there were an insurrection today, people wouldnt even remember you were there.Hey, you know what? Seriously, how do you expect me to level up in Fortnite when theres so much lag? And I cant even use my phone as a hotspot, because its down to 15% and youre hogging all the outlets with your ventilator. This is bullshit. WWW.404MEDIA.COImmigration Raid Tracking App ICE Block Keeps Your Data Private, Researcher FindsICE Block, an app that lets users warn others about the location of ICE officers, and which for a short while was the top of the social media App Store chart, does protect users privacy and doesnt share your location with third parties, according to a recent analysis from a security researcher. ICE Block already claimed that it did not collect any data from the app; the analysis now corroborates that. Its not uploading your location at all, when you make a report that report isnt associated with your device in any way, and there are no third party services that it talks to or sends data to, Cooper Quintin, senior public interest technologist at the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), who analyzed the ICE Block app, told 404 Media.Do you know anything else about this app? I would love to hear from you. Using a non-work device, you can message me securely on Signal at joseph.404 or send me an email at joseph@404media.co.ICE Block lets users report nearby sightings of ICE officials. The app launched in April, but skyrocketed in popularity after CNN covered the app in June. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) head Kritsi Noem then said that were working with the Department of Justice to see if we can prosecute [CNN] for that. There is no indication that what ICE Block is doing is illegal, nor the coverage of the app. Its App Store page says Stay informed about reported ICE sightings, within a 5 mile radius of your current location, in real-time while maintaining your privacy.Joshua Aaron, ICE Blocks developer, told 404 Media there are no legal issues with the app. Multiple constitutional and criminal attorneys looked at it before it launched and all agreed this is protected under the First Amendment. He added Quintins analysis was great because he confirmed everything weve been saying about the app. It is 100% anonymous and we are not collecting or storing any identifiable user information. Aaron declined to say how much the app was costing to run. He said Apple has not contacted him at all about the app and doesnt expect them to.To analyze ICE Block, Quintin said he viewed its network traffic, which would show what data was being transferred or not, viewed logs, and looked up what software libraries were used in the app.404 Media recently reported on a different app called FuckLAPD.com that uses facial recognition to reveal the identity of LAPD officers. The developer of that project also made ICEspy, which is designed to provide the name of ICE officials, but at the time the underlying dataset was out of date.0 Comments 0 Shares 1 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.404MEDIA.COHugging Face Is Hosting 5,000 Nonconsensual AI Models of Real PeopleHugging Face, a company with a multi-billion dollar valuation and one of the most commonly used platforms for sharing AI tools and resources, is hosting over 5,000 AI image generation models that are designed to recreate the likeness of real people. These models were all previously hosted on Civitai, an AI model sharing platform 404 Media reporting has shown was used for creating nonconsensual pornography, until Civitai banned them due to pressure from payment processors.Users downloaded the models from Civitai and reuploaded them to Hugging Face as part of a concerted community effort to archive the models after Civitai announced in May it will ban them. In that announcement, Civitai said it will give the people who originally uploaded them a short period of time before they were removed. Civitai users began organizing an archiving effort on Discord earlier in May after Civitai indicated it had to make content policy changes due to pressure from payment processors, and the effort kicked into high gear when Civitai announced the new real people model policy. At the time of writing, the Discord channel has hundreds of members who are still finding and sharing models that have been removed from Civitai and are reuploading them to Hugging Face. Some users have even shared a piece of software, also hosted on Hugging Face, which allows users to automatically upload Civitai models to Hugging Face in batches.Hugging Face did not respond to multiple requests for comment. It also did not respond to specific questions about how and if it plans to moderate these models given the fact that they were previously hosted on a platform primarily used for AI generating pornography, and which our reporting shows were used to create noncensual pornography.I found the Civitai models of real people that were reuploaded to Hugging Face thanks to a paper I covered where researchers scraped Civitai. The paper showed that the platform was primarily used for pornographic content, and that it deleted at least 50,000 AI models designed to recreate the likeness of real people once it changed its policy in May. The researchers, Laura Wagner and Eva Cetnic from the University of Zurich, provided me with a spreadsheet of all the deleted models, which included the name of the models (which is almost always the name of a female celebrity or lesser known internet personality), a link to where it was previously hosted on Civitai, and the SHA256 hash Civitai uses to identify all the models hosted on its site. The people who are reuploading the Civitai models to Hugging Face are seemingly trying to hide the purpose of those models on Hugging Face. On Hugging Face, these models have generic names and URLs like LORA or Test model. Users cant tell that these models are used to generate the likeness of real people just by looking at their Hugging Face page, nor would they be able to find them by searching for the names of celebrities on Hugging Face. In order to find them, users can go to a separate website the Civitai archivists created. There, they can enter the name of a Civitai model, the link where it used to be hosted on Civitai before it was deleted, or the models SHA256 hash. All of these will lead users to a page which explains what the model is, show its name, as well as several images showing the kind of images it can generate. At the bottom of that page is a link to one or more Hugging Face mirrors where the model has been reuploaded.By using Wagners and Cetnics data and entering it into this Civitai archive site, I was able to find the Civitai models hosted on Hugging Face.Hugging Faces content policy bans Unlawful, defamatory, fraudulent, or intentionally deceptive Content (e.g., disinformation, phishing, scams, inauthentic behavior), as well as Sexual Content used for harassment, bullying, or created without explicit consent. Models that generate the likeness of real people dont have to be used for unlawful or defamatory ends, and they only produce sexual content if people choose to use them that way. Theres nothing in Hugging Faces content policy that explicitly forbids AI models that recreate the likeness of real people. However, the Hugging Face Ethics & Society group, which is committed to operationalizing ethics at the cutting-edge of machine learning, has identified six high-level categories for describing ethical aspects of machine learning work, one of which is that AI should be Consentful.Consentful technology supports the self-determination of people who use and are affected by these technologies, the company explains. Examples of this, the company says, includes Avoiding extractive, chauvinist, dark, and otherwise unethical patterns of engagement.Other AI models that recreate the likeness of real people could conceivably not violate any of these principles. For example, two of the deleted Civitai models that were reuploaded to Hugging Face were designed to recreate the likeness of Vladimir Putin, which in theory people would want to use in order to mock or criticize the Russian president. However, the vast majority of the models are of female celebrities, which my reporting has shown is being used to create nonconsensual sexual content, and which were deleted en masse from Civitai because of pressure from payment processors who didnt want to be associated with that type of media.0 Comments 0 Shares 1 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMMarjorie Taylor Greene rages at her own party for blocking measure to release Epstein filesAfter House Republicans blocked a Democratic attempt to get the Trump administration to release files related to the investigation of convicted child sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) raged on social media and compared Epstein to gay disgraced former congressmember George Santos.America deserves the truth about Jeffrey Epstein and the rich powerful elites in his circle, she wrote shortly after her party blocked a measure to do just that. The line is drawn with anyone who abuses children and vulnerable innocent people. Related Rightwingers who call LGBTQ+ people groomers are worried Trump might soon be outed as a pedophile Theyre already crying conspiracy theory. Marjorie Taylor Greene (@RepMTG) July 15, 2025Her post follows the failure of an amendment offered by Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) to a cryptocurrency bill that would have required Attorney General Pam Bondi to retain, preserve, and compile any records or evidence related to any investigation, prosecution, or incarceration of Jeffrey Epstein and then publish those records not later than 30 days after the bill is signed into law. That measure failed in the House Rules Committee, where all four Democrats voted for it but seven Republicans voted against it, including committee chair Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC). Rules voted 5-7 to block the full House from voting on my amendment to have a FULL release of the Epstein file. People are fed up. They are fed up. Thanks @RepRalphNorman. Need to put the American people before party! pic.twitter.com/HCdIutV5Sv Ro Khanna (@RoKhanna) July 15, 2025At issue is the administrations refusal to release records associated with the investigation of Epstein, who died in prison in 2019 while awaiting trial on charges of sex trafficking minors. While the medical examiner determined that his death was a suicide, many people, especially on the right, do not believe that it was, instead asserting that he was killed to keep him silent about the clients for whom he found children to sexually abuse. Many officials associated with Trump had spent years repeating the same rumors, and Trump himself said repeatedly in 2024 that the Epstein list needed to be released. In February, Attorney General Bondi said that she was reviewing a lot of names related to the Epstein investigation and said that the Epstein list is sitting on my desk right now to review. But last week, the Department of Justice released a memo that said there was no secret client list and reaffirmed the 2019 finding that Epstein died by suicide. Many Trump supporters were outraged that the rumored client list wouldnt be released, while many on the left speculated that the reason Bondi wasnt releasing it is because Trump himself or at least high-ranking members of his administration is on it. Trump had a decades-long friendship with Epstein and joked about how his friend was fun and terrific and liked women on the younger side. Trump has also been found liable for sexual abuse by a jury, has admitted to sexually assaulting women in the past, and has admitted to walking in on underage girls as they changed clothes. He has been accused of sexual assault or other forms of sexual impropriety by at least 27 women. The American people deserve to know the truth, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) said yesterday. What, if anything, is the Trump administration and the Department of Justice hiding? In the past week, Trump has been particularly irritable that his base is still demanding the release of the Epstein list. Are you still talking about Jeffrey Epstein? This guys been talked about for years, he snapped at reporters asking about Bondis memo last week. Are people still talking about this guy? This creep? That is unbelievable.Greene has been outspoken in her support of releasing documents related to the Epstein investigation. Since shes not on the House Rules Committee, she couldnt vote on Khannas amendment. Her X post refers to Epsteins first conviction on a charge of sex trafficking a minor in 2008, where he took a plea deal for 18 months in prison in exchange for a guilty plea. He served just under 13 months of that sentence before being released into probation on house arrest for another year. Former Rep. George Santos (R-NY), the first out LGBTQ+ Republican elected to Congress, was expelled from the House in 2023 after less than a year in the chamber, after numerous reports about the many alleged fraudulent schemes he ran and the lies he told to get elected. He pleaded guilty in 2024to two criminal counts related to various schemes to fraudulently enrich himself, and he was sentenced to 87 months in prison earlier this year. He is expected to turn himself in to federal custody on July 25.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Comments 0 Shares 0 Views 0 Reviews

THEONION.COMWhite House Evacuated After Trans Alarm Goes OffWASHINGTONIn a stunning security breach that reportedly left many top-ranking administration officials vulnerable to attack, the White House was evacuated Tuesday after the buildings trans alarm went off.Officials confirmed the transgender alert system was triggered during President Donald Trumps morning briefing, when infrared estrogen sensors in the West Wing detected a large spike in gender fluidity dangerously close to the Oval Office. With an alarm blaring the words Trans, trans, trans, the Secret Service initiated a Code Rainbow, which prompted agents to rush the president to safety, place Cabinet members in a hormone-proof bunker, and secure the premises from radical gender ideology. At approximately 10:02 a.m., a transgender individual actively approached the perimeter of a highly restricted cisgender-only area, said Secret Service chief Sean Curran, adding that the trans alarm operated as intended when it immediately cut the lights, initiated a siren, and lowered several trans-resistant blast doors. Thanks to our brave, quick-thinking officers on the White House security detail, President Trump and the penis he was born with are safe from any harmful hormone therapies or gential mutilation. We train for this, Curran added. We are thankful thepresident was unharmed and remains a straight white cisgender male.Staff have yet to return to the White House, where the situation remains gender fluid. In security video taken from the scene, Secret Service agents could be seen shielding Trump as they quickly outfitted him with a hormone-proof vest and whisked him across the White House lawn, where he was loaded into a Blackhawk helicopter. Upon reaching Andrews Air Force Base, he was reportedly flown to an undisclosed location in an anti-trans jet equipped with technology that allowed it to scan the area for androgyny, gender nonconformity, and other LGBTQ-related threats.Following the administrations established trans evacuation protocol, several prominent male officials, including Vice President JD Vance, deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller, and budget director Russell Vought, were ushered into the Traditional Values Bunker, a secure facility where they were given mandatory genital inspections, injected with a shot of testosterone, and ordered to pleasure themselves to completion while watching emergency hetero-normative pornography.Traumatized staffers told reporters they barricaded themselves in their offices, frantically called 911, and texted their loved ones goodbye as the trans person walked past the building along Pennsylvania Avenue, appearing unafraid to shirk traditional gender norms and be unashamedly and unabashedly themselves. When I heard the trans alarm, I thought to myself, this is the end, said 29-year-old White House aide Chase Kettering, adding that he hid under his desk, cried, and sent his wife what he feared would be a final photo of his genitals. At that point, I kneeled down and prayed. I said, God, holy father in heaven, please do not let the trans person turn me into a girl. Then I picked up a Bible, yelled as many slurs as I could think of, and started running. At first I thought it was a drill, Kettering continued. But sadly, a trans person can strike at any time. These days, no one, and nowhere, is safe.Despite the severity of the security breach, President Trump is said to be in good spirits and to have spent the afternoon calling the victims families, including the children of a White House security official who was trampled to death by cis men fleeing the scene, and the wife of Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, who suffered fatal injuries when an anti-trans quarantine screen descended from the ceiling and sliced him in half. According to sources, press secretary Karoline Leavitt became collateral damage when she died in a hail of estrogen-seeking bullets that had been intended for the trans threat.Today, we honor the many brave biological men and women who lost their lives protecting Donald Trump from pronouns, allyship, and tolerance, said House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), adding that the fallen would always be remembered as true patriots who stood in the way of someone expressing their gender. These were more than just government workers. They were real, red-blooded alpha males with defined muscles, baritone voices, and strong, angular chins. They were quiet, docile trad wives who loved to cook, clean, and gratify every sexual desire of their husbands. It takes a real hero to face the reality of being in the same vicinity as a trans person, Johnson added. And for that, we will be forever grateful.Several Cabinet members praised Trumps bravery and circulated triumphant footage of the president raising his fist, unzipping his pants, flashing his penis at the cameras, and saying, Fight! Fight! Fight! The post White House Evacuated After Trans Alarm Goes Off appeared first on The Onion.0 Comments 0 Shares 0 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMCommunity rallies in protest after local church calls for killing LGBTQ+ peopleFaith leaders in Indianapolis organized a march this past Sunday in protest of a local church that made national headlines for calling for death to LGBTQ+ people. One of the protests co-organizers said that the message is that LGBTQ+ people exist, no matter what the church says. The group Concerned Clergy of Indianapolis countered the churchs message. We are called to be a sanctuary for the marginalized, not a platform for prejudice, the group said in a statement. WWW.404MEDIA.COSaving the Lost Silent Zuckerberg Interview With the Amazing Power of AIYesterday, Silicon Valley trade publication The Information launched TITV, a live-streaming news program. For its first episode, the companys founder Jessica Lessin interviewed Mark Zuckerberg about his recent attempts to hire AI executives away from other companies for huge sums of money. It is impossible to say what actually happened in the interview, however, because there were audio problems with the livestreamthe Zuckerberg segment was completely silent, giving us a minute and 50 seconds of video of Zuckerbergs face moving with no sound coming out. In recent weeks, however, Zuckerberg has really ramped up his rhetoric about superintelligence, throwing hundreds of millions of dollars at AI researchers in attempts to hire them at Meta, and beginning work on massive data centers around the country to power his AI. Zuckerberg and Meta have talked endlessly about AI as a game changer, while being unable or unwilling to keep AI-generated misinformation and slop off of Meta platforms.Meanwhile, there has been increased discussion about the possible power of using AI for journalism, which we have written about extensively. I saw the silent interview with Zuckerberg as both an opportunity to check out the awesome abilities of Metas AI, and to test AI tools at a task some of them are supposedly good atreading lips. If these technologies worked as well as their creators have promised, it might be possible to provide the world with information from The Lost Mark Zuckerberg Interview. Here is how my experiment went.Because Zuckerberg was obviously talking about Meta AI, I thought I would try his tool first. I took video from the interview and asked Meta AI to lip read it to tell me what they were saying:Id love to help! However, Im a text-based AI and dont have capability to visually lip read videos, Meta AI said. It then suggested that I find a professional lip reader or transcription service that specializes in lip reading videos or use automated lip reading software.I then tried to upload still images to see if Meta AI could parse them:When I uploaded additional images, Meta AI was also not able to provide any information about what was being said.I then went to ChatGPT, because Zuckerberg is reportedly offering pay packages of up to $300 million to OpenAI staffers to come work at Meta. I uploaded the 1:50 video and ChatGPT told me the video processing took too long and timed out. I then uploaded a 25 second clip and it told me the system is still timing out while trying to extract frames. I then asked it to do the first five seconds and it said even with the shorter clip and smaller scope (first 5 seconds), the system timed out. I then asked for it to extract one single frame, and it said it looks like the system is currently unable to extract even a single frame from the video file. ChatGPT then asked me to take a screenshot of Zuckerberg. I sent it this:And ChatGPT said the person appears to be producing a sound like f or v (as in video or very), but that possibly m or b, depending on the next motion. I then shared the 10 frames around that single screenshot, and ChatGPT said after closely analyzing the progression of lip shapes and facial motion, the probable lip-read phrase was This is version. I then uploaded 10 more frames and it said the full phrase so far (high confidence): This version is just.I then decided to try to extract every frame from the video and upload it to ChatGPT. I went to a website called frame-extractor.com and cut the video into 3,000 frames. After it had processed 700 of them, I tried to upload them to ChatGPT and it did not work. I then decided I would go 10 frames at a time from the beginning of the clip. Even though I sent an entirely different portion of the video and told ChatGPT we were starting from a different part of the video, it still said that the beginning of the video said this version is. I continued uploading frames, 10 at a time. These frames included both Lessin and Zuckerberg, not just Zuckerberg. ChatGPT slowly began to create a surely accurate transcript of the lost audio of this interview: This version is just that it we built, ChatGPT said. As I added more and more frames, it refined the answer: This version is what were going to do, it said. Finally, it seemed to make a breakthrough. Is this version of LLaMA more powerful than the one we released last year? the ChatGPT transcript said. It was not clear about who was speaking, however. ChatGPT said "her mouth movements," but then explained that the "speaker is the man on the left" (Lessin, not Zuckerberg, was speaking in these frames).I had uploaded 40 of a total of 3,000 frames. Zoom video is usually 30 fps, so in approximately 1.5 seconds, Lessin and/or Zuckerberg apparently said Is this version of LLaMA more powerful than the one we released last year? I then recorded this phrase at a normal speaking speed, and it took about four seconds. Just a data point. Lipreadtest0:00/4.9733331I then got an error message from ChatGPT, and got rate-limited because I was uploading too much data. It told me that I needed to wait three hours to try again. Finally, I did what Meta AI told me to do, and tried a bespoke AI lip reading app. I found one called ReadTheirLips.com, which is powered by Symphonic Labs. This is a tool that people have been trying to use in recent months to figure out what Donald Trump and Jeffrey Epstein were saying to each other in silent b-roll news footage, without much success.I paid $10 for three minutes worth of transcription and asked it to lip read using its Multiface Detection. After waiting 10 minutes, I got an error message that said Transcription failed, no credits have been used, try again later. I then asked it to focus only on Zuckerberg, and actually got some text. I separately asked it to focus on Lessin. Here is a transcript of what the AI says they were talking about. It has not been edited for clarity and I have no idea which parts, if any, are accurate:LESSIN: Thanks for joining us again, TV. We're happy to have you already this morning. News that you've spent even more money with your big announcement about your new supercomputers. We'll get to that, but to start, you've been in huge scale like I.ZUCKERBERG: Happy TO BE HERE. We're GOING TO TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT META'S AI STRATEGY. It's BEEN BUSY, YOU KNOW? I THINK THE MOST EXCITING THING THIS YEAR IS THAT WE'RE STARTING TO SEE EARLY GLIMPSES OF SELF-IMPROVEMENT WITH THE MODELS, WHICH MEANS THAT DEVELOPING SUPERINTELLIGENCE IS NOW.LESSIN: You HAVE BEEN ON A PLANE OF AI HIRING, WHY AND WHY NOW?ZUCKERBERG: Insight, and we just want to make sure that we really strengthen the effort as much as possible to go for it. Our mission with a lab is to deliver personal superintelligence to everyone in the world, so that way, you know, we can put that power in every individual's hand. I'm really excited about it.LESSIN: I DON'T KNOW, I DON'T KNOW, I DON'T KNOW.ZUCKERBERG: Than ONE OF THE OTHER LABS YOU'RE DOING, AND YOU KNOW MY VIEW IS THAT THIS IS GOING TO BE SOMETHING THAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT TECHNOLOGY IN OUR LIVES. IT'S GOING TO UNDERPIN HOW WE DEVELOP EVERYTHING AND THE COMPANY, AND IT'S GOING TO AFFECT SOCIETY VERY WISELY. SO WE JUST WANT TO MAKE SURE WE GET THE BEST FOCUS.LESSIN: Did YOU FEEL LIKE YOU WERE BEHIND WHAT WAS COMING OUT OF LAW BEFORE I'M NOT ADJUSTING.ZUCKERBERG: On THIS FROM ENTREPRENEURS TO RESEARCHERS TO ENGINEERS WORKING ON THIS HIDDEN INFRASTRUCTURE, AND THEN OF COURSE WE WANT TO BACK IT UP WITH JUST AN ABSOLUTELY MASSIVE AMOUNT OF COMPUTER RESEARCH, WHICH WE CAN SUPPORT BECAUSE WE HAVE A VERY STRONG BUSINESS MODEL THAT THROWS OFF A LOT OF CAPITAL. LET'S TALK ABOUT.LESSIN: Like THIS SUMMER, PARTICULARLY, YOU SWITCH GEARS A LITTLE BIT.ZUCKERBERG: I THINK THE FIELD IS ACCELERATING, YOU KNOW, WE KEEP ON TRACK FOR WHERE WE WANT TO BE, AND THE FIELD KEEPS US MOVING FORWARD.The video ends there, and it cuts back to the studio. I emailed The Information to see if it could provide a version of the interview with audio to check how well the AI performed and to see if it had comment about what happened, but it did not respond.0 Comments 0 Shares 1 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMZach Wahls helped defeat a marriage ban in Iowa. Now hes running against the bans sponsor. In 2011, 19-year-old Zach Wahls gave a passionate and career-defining speech about his two moms at a hearing of the Iowa House Judiciary Committee, as the legislature considered an amendment to ban same-sex marriage in Iowas Constitution. You are voting for the first time in the history of our state to codify discrimination into our Constitution, the college student told the committee. You are telling Iowans that some among you are second-class citizens, who do not have the right to marry the person you love. So, will this vote affect my family? Would it affect yours? With Wahls help, the amendment went down to defeat. Then-state Sen. Joni Ernst (R) was a co-sponsor of that legislation. Insights for the LGBTQ+ community Subscribe to our briefing for insights into how politics impacts the LGBTQ+ community and more. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Now, Wahls is having a full-circle moment as an Iowa state senator running against Ernst for her seat in the U.S. Senate.Maybe.Rumors are circulating that Ernst might forgo a third campaign, following her unforced error at an Iowa town hall last month, when she told constituents faced with Republicans devastating cuts to Medicaid, We are all going to die. Gone was Iowans delight with Ernsts Were going to make them squeal pledge from her first run for the Senate. Wahls spoke from his living and dining room campaign headquarters at his home in Coralville, Iowa, which he shares with his wife and young son.LGBTQ Nation: In May, Iowa state Sen. Sandy Salmon (R) introduced a resolution calling on the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn Obergefell v. Hodges, the landmark federal case that legalized same-sex marriage in 2015. The resolution stated, Since court rulings are not laws and only legislatures elected by the people may pass laws, Obergefell is an illegitimate overreach. Fourteen years after you gave a speech to the Iowa House Judiciary Committee defending the rights of gay couples like your parents to marry, what was your reaction?Sen. Zach Wahls: Well, it was shocking, and unfortunately, a good reminder that political battles are never completely won, right? We have to continue to stay vigilant and fight back. I obviously got right to work. I reached out to several of my Republican colleagues to make sure that they were not going to be supporting this. It died very quickly. But it was still pretty shocking and outrageous that she would even consider introducing that kind of resolution. Its an illustration of the fact that weve certainly seen some retrenchment on some of these issues and that our rights are still under threat. So, in polling your colleagues, they did not support it. But what was the overall reaction? Do you see an evolution on the issue in their responses? Or is there the inkling of a return to a pre-marriage equality mindset? No. I think that for many of them, marriage itself is largely settled. But obviously, theres still plenty of conflict over where we go from here. In fact, this year, my Republican colleagues made Iowa the first state in the country to actually remove gender identity from the Iowa Civil Rights Act. It really erodes rights for transgender Iowans. That was obviously shocking, and I was one of the leading voices on the floor fighting against that proposal. Also shocking was the fact that Republicans messaging on it was completely incoherent. I tried to get the bill manager to explain their motivation for this legislation, and they just kind of kept talking about protecting women over and over, and not actually answering the question. After being one of the first states to legalize same-sex marriage, in 2009, Iowa is the only state to see a decline in the number of same-sex marriages. From 2014 to 2023, the number of households led by same-sex couples fell by 11%. What accounts for it? Is Iowa a backslide state? Its a good question. You certainly have seen a number of LGBTQ Iowans leave the state because of concerns about backsliding and those kinds of things, right? Again, I would say that just underscores that our rights are under threat, and were seeing attacks on those rights, and we cant take anything for granted. In addition to the erosion of LGBTQ rights, Iowa Republicans introduced one of the most radical abortion bans in the country, an ultra-extreme six-week abortion ban that was passed in the summer of 2023 and that is one of the two or three most extreme bans among the states. So it would not surprise me if that was a contributing factor, as well. Several state legislatures, along with the Southern Baptist Convention last month, are calling on the Supreme Court to overturn Obergefell, as they did with Roe.Saw that. What are the odds that this happens? And what do you say to the Court members on record endorsing it, Justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas?Ill tell you this: I absolutely would not vote to confirm a justice to the U.S. Supreme Court who would not agree that marriage equality is settled law in this country. Congress passed the Respect for Marriage Act a few years ago, and anybody who would try to argue that the RMA was unconstitutional or anything like that clearly has no place on the highest court in the land. The number of Americans affiliated with a religion is on the decline, while the number of those who dont identify with a religion is on the rise, with just about 20% attending church weekly. 56% seldom or never attend religious services. That decline has accompanied increased political division, the rise of social media, and a loneliness epidemic in the United States. You identify as a Unitarian Universalist. Do Americans need more religion in their lives?Well, I think we certainly need more community, no doubt about it. And faith community is a profound source of connection and importance for a lot of people. It certainly has been for me.Its actually how my parents met, at a UU event back in the 90s. And when they had their first commitment ceremony in 1996, it was at a Unitarian Church in central Wisconsin. By the way, they walked down the aisle to the theme song of Star Trek Voyager, you know, to boldly go where no one had gone before. One thing I definitely find important in my faith is grace, grace both for ourselves when we fall short, and grace for others when they dont meet our expectations. For some people, obviously thats an important part of their faith. For others, its important on its own. I think our politics needs more grace right now. As a new Iowa state senator in 2011, Joni Ernst was a co-sponsor of the proposed constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage in Iowa that you spoke so eloquently about. How does it feel going head-to-head in the political arena with someone so closely associated with that moment that brought you national recognition all these years later?Yeah. I mean, it feels very full-circle in some ways, and I think the contrast between us couldnt be any more clear. You know, Sen. Ernst, when she ran in 2014, promised to only serve two terms. Shes broken that promise. The Medicaid cuts that are in the legislation that was just passed are going to be devastating for Iowa, and shes ignored the fact that were obviously a rural state, and the cuts in particular to rural health care providers are going to be hurting. And she made that comment a few weeks ago about how Were all going to die in response to those cuts. Thats not something you say if you were in touch with the needs and concerns of everyday Iowans. Thats something you say if youve lost touch and youve gone Washington, which I think obviously she has. She has broken her promises over and over and over again. I dont think its too much to ask to have a politician who actually keeps their promises. Well, you can credit her for making a memorable comment.(Laughing) Yeah, you know, she had a line in this viral TV ad when she first ran back in 2014. She said, Lets go to Washington and make them squeal, right? And what I would say all these years later is, I think Joni Ernst is all squeal, no bacon. To her credit, Ernst voted for the Respect for Marriage Act, and says she supports transgender service members in the military she served in the Iraq War as a member of the Iowa National Guard. Whats the one issue you think Ernst is most vulnerable on for Iowa voters? Healthcare is going to be that issue. The vote Republicans just took on healthcare is going to increase costs for Iowans, not just for people who are enrolled in Medicaid, not just for people who are on Obamacare plans, but for everybody. Because the end of those investments in that part of our health care system is going to drive up costs for everybody.Iowa voted for Barack Obama twice and for Bill Clinton twice, and Democrat Tom Harkin was a longtime Iowa Senator. What was appealing to Iowans about those men that gives you hope for your Senate run in red-state Iowa? One thing that all of those people you just named have in common is the fact that theyre all outsiders. They were willing to take on the establishment and challenge the status quo. That is exactly what Ive done my entire career. And by the way, I would put Donald Trump in that category, too. He is obviously someone who has run in an anti-establishment lane. But from my perspective, its clear the establishment is not working for everyday Iowans. Ive only been in office for seven years, but Ive seen the corruption. Ive seen the insider politics and how it hurts Iowans, and it makes me sick to my stomach. Ive fought these fights, and I will never hesitate to do that when Im in the U.S. Senate.Youve called yourself queer-spawn as the son of two moms.(Laughing) Yes.Did being raised by two mothers give you insight into women that the child of straight parents might not have? Oh, sure. I mean, its definitely an unusual life experience. But Id say more than anything else, its not just about having two moms I have two great moms but my parents raised me with very good values and a lot of common sense. They taught me what family means: taking care of each other. Those are values and lessons that Im bringing to bear myself now as a father and raising my son, Elijah, with my wife, Chloe. And we feel really fortunate, by the way, to have two loving grandmothers who are not too far a drive from our house. Theyre always happy to help out when we want to sneak away for a date night, which we certainly appreciate. But at the end of the day, as I said in my speech, its not really about the sexual orientation of your parents. Its about whether or not theyre willing to put in all the blood, sweat, and tears that it takes to sculpt little hellions into upstanding young adults.Whats the single most important thing the world should do to address the climate crisis? For the record, Sen. Ernst is a climate change denier.Look, clean energy is absolutely vital for the state of Iowa. In fact, 60% of our electricity comes from wind energy, and its going to be a big part of our future. We are seeing more and more utility-scale solar come online in the state, and you cant grow more corn than anywhere else on the planet without a ton of sunshine. Would you support national mandatory service for young people in the military, or some other form of public service of their choosing, like the Peace Corps or Teach for America?I benefited from serving in the Boy Scouts of America, and I have a lot of friends who served in the military, served in Teach for America, the Peace Corps. Encouraging service is really important. One thing that Ive thought for a long time is, you have the national military academies, which obviously do a great job of preparing our men and women in uniform. Having some service academies that help people learn how to be more effective in public service would also be something that we should think about. How do you describe the role of the Senate in forming policy and making law, compared to the House of Representatives and in relation to the Executive Branch and the Supreme Court? One of the important things to understand about the Senate is that it is an independent and coequal branch of government. And one of its most important roles is in confirming appointments by the Executive. That was one of the reasons why Sen. Ernsts flip-flop on Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth was so disappointing. I mean, she clearly had very well-founded concerns about Mr. Hegseth. Her backing up on that because of the political pressure demonstrates that she has lost her independence, which I think is the most essential attribute of the Senate. Whats the thing youre most looking forward to about representing the people of Iowa in the U.S. Senate if you win next November? The opportunity to solve problems on their behalf. And were using the campaign itself as a vehicle to start that work. Now, we know that we cant solve every problem that we hear about from people, but there are going to be problems that we can solve, and when we hear about those, that becomes our to-do list in Washington. I expect that its going to be a pretty long to-do list by the time we get there, and Im really excited to get after it.
