APNEWS.COMIsrael says Netanyahu will meet with Trump on Wednesday about Iran talksIn this photo released by the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, center, heads to venue for talks between Iran and the U.S., in Muscat, Oman, Friday, Feb. 6, 2026. (Iranian Foreign Ministry via AP)2026-02-07T18:19:31Z JERUSALEM (AP) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will meet with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington on Wednesday about American talks with Iran, his office said Saturday, while Irans foreign minister threatened U.S. military bases in the region a day after the discussions. The prime minister believes that all negotiations must include limiting the ballistic missiles, and ending support for the Iranian axis, Netanyahus office said in a brief statement, referring to Tehrans support for militant groups, including Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in the Palestinian territories. Trump and Netanyahu last met in December. There was no immediate White House comment. The U.S. and the Islamic Republic of Iran held indirect talks on Friday in Oman that appeared to return to the starting point on how to approach discussions over Tehrans nuclear program. Trump called the talks very good and said more were planned for early next week. Washington was represented by Middle East special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, Trumps son-in-law.Trump has repeatedly threatened to use force to compel Iran to reach a deal on its nuclear program after sending the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and other warships to the region amid Tehrans crackdown on nationwide protests that killed thousands. Gulf Arab nations fear an attack could spark a regional war, with memories fresh of the 12-day Israel-Iran war in June. For the first time in negotiations with Iran, the U.S. on Friday brought its top military commander in the Middle East to the table. U.S. Navy Adm. Brad Cooper, head of the militarys Central Command, then visited the USS Abraham Lincoln on Saturday with Witkoff and Kushner, the command said in a statement.Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told journalists Friday that nuclear talks and the resolution of the main issues must take place in a calm atmosphere, without tension and without threats. He said that diplomats would return to their capitals, signaling that this round of negotiations was over. On Saturday, Araghchi told the Al Jazeera satellite news network that if the U.S. attacks Iran, his country doesnt have the ability to strike the U.S. and therefore has to attack or retaliate against U.S. bases in the region. He said there is very, very deep distrust after what happened during the previous talks, when the U.S. bombed Iranian nuclear sites during last years Israel-Iran war.Araghchi also said the missile issue and other defense matters are in no way negotiable, neither now nor at any time in the future.Tehran has maintained that these talks will be only on its nuclear program. However, Al Jazeera reported that diplomats from Egypt, Turkey and Qatar offered Iran a proposal in which Tehran would halt enrichment for three years, send its highly enriched uranium out of the country and pledge to not initiate the use of ballistic missiles.U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Wednesday that the talks needed to include all those issues. Israel, a close U.S. ally, believes Iran is pursuing a nuclear weapon and wants its program scrapped, though Iran has insisted that its atomic plans are for peaceful purposes. Israel also wants a halt to Irans ballistic missile program and its support for militant groups in the region.Araghchi, speaking at a forum in Qatar on Saturday, accused Israel of destabilizing the region, saying that it breaches sovereignties, it assassinates official dignitaries, it conducts terrorist operations, it expands its reach in multiple theaters. He criticized Israels treatment of Palestinians and called for comprehensive and targeted sanctions against Israel, including an immediate arms embargo.0 Comentarios 0 Compartidas 7 Vistas 0 Reseñas

APNEWS.COMWashington Post publisher Will Lewis says hes stepping down, days after big layoffs at the paperWill Lewis, publisher and CEO of The Washington Post, poses for a portrait in Washington, Sunday, Nov. 5, 2023. (Matt McClain/The Washington Post via AP, File)2026-02-07T23:20:38Z Washington Post publisher Will Lewis said Saturday that hes stepping down, three days after the troubled newspaper said that it was laying off one-third of its staff.Lewis sent an email to the Posts staff, saying that difficult decisions have been taken in order to ensure the sustainable future of The Post. Lewis and the newspapers billionaire owner Jeff Bezos, did not participate in a meeting with staff announcing the layoffs this week. The Posts chief financial officer, Jeff DOnofrio, was named acting publisher and CEO. He joined the newspaper only last June. The British-born Lewis was a former top executive at The Wall Street Journal before taking over at The Post in January 2024. His tenure has been rocky from the start, marked by layoffs and a failed reorganization plan that led to the departure of former top editor Sally Buzbee. The Post also lost tens of thousand of subscribers following Bezos order late in the presidential campaign pulling back an expected endorsement of Kamala Harris for president, and subsequent changes to turn the editorial pages in a more conservative direction. While anticipated, this past weeks layoffs were deeper than anticipated, resulting in the shutting down of the Posts renowned sports section, sharp cutbacks in foreign and metro coverage, and the laying off of its photographic staff. APNEWS.COMWe will pay, Savannah Guthrie says in desperate video plea to potential kidnappers of her motherPima County, Ariz., Sheriff Chris Nanos speaks with The Associated Press, Friday, Feb. 6, 2026, in Tucson, Ariz. (AP Photo/Ty ONeil)2026-02-08T00:10:53Z TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) Savannah Guthrie told the potential kidnappers of her mother Nancy Guthrie on Saturday that the family is prepared to pay for her safe return. We received your message, and we understand. We beg you now to return our mother to us so that we can celebrate with her, Guthrie said in the video, flanked by her siblings. This is the only way we will have peace. This is very valuable to us, and we will pay.It was not immediately clear if Guthrie was referring to a new message from someone who might have kidnapped Nancy Guthrie. The Associated Press reached out to the Pima County Sheriffs department seeking additional details. The frantic search for the 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie has entered a seventh day. Authorities have not identified any suspects or ruled anyone out, Sheriff Chris Nanos said this week. Authorities think she was taken against her will from her home just outside Tucson over the weekend. DNA tests showed blood on Guthries front porch was a match to her, Nanos said. APNEWS.COMAppeals court affirms Trump policy of jailing immigrants without bondHomeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem speaks during a news conference at Federal Emergency Management Agency headquarters, Saturday, Jan. 24, 2026, in Washington. (AP Photo/Julia Demaree Nikhinson)2026-02-07T22:53:52Z President Donald Trumps administration can continue to detain immigrants without bond, marking a major legal victory for the federal immigration agenda and countering a slew of recent lower court decisions across the country that argued the practice is illegal.A panel of judges on the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled on Friday evening that the Department of Homeland Securitys decision to deny bond hearings to immigrants arrested across the country is consistent with the constitution and federal immigration law. Specifically, circuit judge Edith H. Jones wrote in the 2-1 majority opinion that the government correctly interpreted the Immigration and Nationality Act by asserting that unadmitted aliens apprehended anywhere in the United States are ineligible for release on bond, regardless of how long they have resided inside the United States. Under past administrations, most noncitizens with no criminal record who were arrested away from the border had an opportunity to request a bond hearing while their cases wound through immigration court. Historically, bond was often granted to those without criminal convictions who were not flight risks, and mandatory detention was limited to recent border crossers. That prior Administrations decided to use less than their full enforcement authority under the law does not mean they lacked the authority to do more, Jones wrote. The plaintiffs in the two separate cases filed last year against the Trump administration were both Mexican nationals who had both lived in the United States for over 10 years and werent flight risks, their attorneys argued. Neither man had a criminal record, and both were jailed for months last year before a lower Texas court granted them bond in October. The Trump White House reversed that policy in favor of mandatory detention in July, reversing almost 30 years of precedent under both Democrat and Republican administrations. Fridays ruling also bucks a November district court decision in California, which granted detained immigrants with no criminal history the opportunity to request a bond hearing and had implications for noncitizens held in detention nationwide.Circuit Judge Dana M. Douglas wrote the lone dissent in Fridays decision. The elected congress members who passed the Immigration and Nationality Act would be surprised to learn it had also required the detention without bond of two million people, Douglas wrote, adding that many of the people detained are the spouses, mothers, fathers, and grandparents of American citizens. She went on to argue that the federal government was overriding the lawmaking process with DHS new immigration detention policy that denies detained immigrants bond. Because I would reject the governments invitation to rubber stamp its proposed legislation by executive fiat, I dissent, Douglas wrote.Douglas opinion echoed widespread tensions between the Trump administration and federal judges around the country, who have increasingly accused the administration of flouting court orders. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi celebrated the decision as a significant blow against activist judges who have been undermining our efforts to make America safe again at every turn.We will continue vindicating President Trumps law and order agenda in courtrooms across the country, Bondi wrote on the social media platform X. APNEWS.COMJapanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi hopes for big win as polls open in national electionsA voter fills in a ballot in the lower house election at a polling station Sunday, Feb. 8, 2026, in Tokyo. (AP Photo/Louise Delmotte)2026-02-07T22:07:08Z TOKYO (AP) Polls opened Sunday in parliamentary elections that Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi hopes will give her struggling party a big enough win to push through an ambitious conservative political agenda.Takaichi is hugely popular, but the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, which has governed Japan for most of the last seven decades, has struggled from funding and religious scandals. She called Sundays snap elections hoping to turn that around. She wants to make progress on a right-wing agenda that aims to boost Japans economy and military capabilities as tensions grow with China. She also wants to nurture ties with her crucial U.S. ally, and a sometimes unpredictable President Donald Trump. The ultraconservative Takaichi, who took office as Japans first female leader in October, pledged to work, work, work, and her style, which is seen as both playful and tough, has resonated with younger fans. The latest surveys indicated a landslide win in the lower house for the LDP. The opposition, despite the formation of a new centrist alliance and a rising far-right, is seen as too splintered to be a real challenger. Takaichi is betting that her LDP party, together with its new partner, the Japan Innovation Party, will secure a majority in the 465-seat lower house, the more powerful of Japans two-chamber parliament. Recent surveys by major Japanese newspapers show a possibility that Takaichis party could win a simple majority on its own while her coalition could win as many as 300 seats a big jump from a thin majority it held since a 2024 election loss. If the LDP fails to win a majority, I will step down, she said. A big win by Takaichis coalition could mean a significant shift to the right in Japans security, immigration and other policies, with its right-wing partner JIPs leader Hirofumi Yoshimura saying his party will serve as an accelerator. Japan has recently seen far-right populists gain ground, such as the anti-globalist and surging nationalist party Sanseito. Takaichi has pledged to revise security and defense policies by December to bolster Japans offensive military capabilities, lifting a ban on weapons exports and moving further away from the countrys postwar pacifist principles. She has been pushing for tougher policies on foreigners, anti-espionage and other measures that resonate with a far-right audience but ones that experts say could undermine civil rights.Takaichi also wants to increase defense spending in response to Trumps pressure on Japan to loosen its purse strings.Though Takaichi said she is seeking the publics mandate for her nation splitting policies, she avoided contentious issues such as ways to fund soaring military spending, how to fix diplomatic tension with China and other controversial issues. In her campaign speeches, Takaichi enthusiastically talked about the need for proactive government spending to fund crisis management investment and growth, such as measures to strengthen economic security, technology and other industries. Takaichi also seeks to push tougher measures on immigration and foreigners, including stricter requirements for foreign property owners and a cap on foreign residents. Still, Kazuki Ishihara, 54, said she voted for the LDP for stability and in hopes for something new under Takaichi. I have some hope that she could do something her predecessors could not.A 50-year-old office worker Yoshinori Tamada said his interest is wages. I think a lot when I look at my pay slip, and I cast my vote for a party that I believe I can trust in that regard.Sundays vote started under fresh snowfall across the country, including in Tokyo. Record snowfall in northern Japan over the last few weeks, which blocked roads and was blamed for dozens of deaths nationwide, could hinder voting or delay vote counting in hard-hit areas. ___Associated Press video journalist Mayuko Ono in Tokyo contributed to this report.
