APNEWS.COMGabbard slashing intelligence office workforce, cutting budget by more than $700 millionDirector of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard speaks with reporters in the James Brady Press Briefing Room at the White House, Wednesday, July 23, 2025, in Washington. (AP Photo/Julia Demaree Nikhinson)2025-08-20T20:23:39Z WASHINGTON (AP) The Office of the Director of National Intelligence will dramatically reduce its workforce and cut its budget by more than $700 million annually, the Trump administration announced Wednesday.Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard said in a statement, Over the last 20 years, ODNI has become bloated and inefficient, and the intelligence community is rife with abuse of power, unauthorized leaks of classified intelligence, and politicized weaponization of intelligence. She said the intelligence community must make serious changes to fulfill its responsibility to the American people and the U.S. Constitution by focusing on our core mission: find the truth and provide objective, unbiased, timely intelligence to the President and policymakers. The reorganization is part of a broader administration effort to rethink its evaluation of foreign threats to American elections, a topic that has become politically loaded given President Donald Trumps long-running resistance to the intelligence communitys assessment that Russia interfered on his behalf in the 2016 election. In February, for instance, Attorney General Pam Bondi disbanded an FBI task force focused on investigating foreign influence operations, including those that target U.S. elections. The Trump administration also has made sweeping cuts at the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, which oversees the nations critical infrastructure, including election systems. Gabbards efforts to downsize the agency she leads is in keeping with the cost-cutting mandate the administration has employed since its earliest days, when Elon Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency oversaw mass layoffs of the federal workforce. Its the latest headline-making move by a key official who just a few months ago had seemed out of favor with Trump over her analysis of Irans nuclear capabilities but who in recent weeks has emerged as a key loyalist. Shes released a series of documents meant to call into question the legitimacy of the intelligence communitys findings on Russian election interference in 2016, and this week, at Trumps direction, revoked the security clearances of 37 current and former government officials. The ODNI in the past has joined forces with other federal agencies to debunk and alert the public to foreign disinformation intended to influence U.S. voters. For example, it was involved in an effort to raise awareness about a Russian video that falsely depicted mail-in ballots being destroyed in Pennsylvania that circulated widely on social media in the weeks before the 2024 presidential election.Notably, Gabbard said she would be refocusing the priorities of the Foreign Malign Influence Center, which her office says on its website is focused on mitigating threats to democracy and U.S. national interests from foreign malign influence. It wasnt clear from Gabbards release or fact sheet exactly what the changes would entail, but Gabbard noted its hyper-focus on work tied to elections and said the center was used by the previous administration to justify the suppression of free speech and to censor political opposition.AP writer Ali Swenson contributed reporting. APNEWS.COMWhat to know about the Menendez brothers parole hearingsLyle, left, and Erik Galen Menendez sit in a Beverly Hills, Calif., courtroom, May 14, 1990. (AP Photo/Kevork Djansezian, File)2025-08-20T19:28:28Z LOS ANGELES (AP) Lyle and Erik Menendez are scheduled to face separate parole hearings beginning Thursday in California and depending on the outcomes could eventually be released from prison nearly 30 years after being convicted of killing their parents.A panel of parole officers will evaluate each of the brothers via videoconference. Theyll appear from prison in San Diego. In 1995, a jury convicted both brothers of first-degree murder in the 1989 murders of Jose and Kitty Menendez inside their Los Angeles-area home. The brothers were sentenced to life in prison without parole in 1996.They became eligible for parole after a Los Angeles judge in May reduced their sentences from life in prison without the possibility of parole to 50 years to life, making them immediately eligible for parole under California law because they were under the ages of 26 when they committed their crimes. Who are the Menendez brothers and what did they do?Lyle and Erik Menendez are the sons of Jose and Kitty Menendez. Jose Menendez, a Cuban-American business executive who at one time was an executive at RCA Records, moved his family from Princeton, New Jersey, to California when his sons were teenagers. On Aug. 20, 1989, Lyle Menendez dialed 911 to report the shotgun-killings of their parents inside their home. Both brothers told investigators that the murders were related to the Mafia or had something to do with their fathers business dealings. At the time, Erik was 18 and Lyle was 21. With access to the familys wealth, the brothers spent small fortunes on Rolex watches, cars and houses. But two months after the killings, Erik Menendez confessed to his psychologist that he and his brother killed their parents. What were the brothers charged with? They were arrested early the following year and each charged with first-degree murder. The brothers claimed their father had emotionally and sexually abused them since childhood. Prosecutors contended that getting hold of their fathers money was the motive behind the couples killings. The brothers first trial started in 1993. Their attorneys never disputed the pair killed their parents, but argued that they acted out of self-defense. Their trials resulted in hung juries. In 1995, a jury convicted both brothers of three counts, including first-degree murder, plus lying in-wait and special circumstance allegations. They were sentenced to life in prison without parole in 1996. How did they spend their years in prison? For years after their conviction, the brothers filed petitions for appeals of their cases while in prison. State and federal judges denied the petitions. The brothers have gotten an education, participated in self-help classes and started various support groups for fellow prisoners. They also launched a prison beautification project inspired by the Norwegian approach to incarceration that believes rehabilitation in humane prisons surrounded by nature leads to successful reintegration into society, even for those who have committed terrible crimes.Over the years, the Menendez case continued to fascinate the public and the young, handsome brothers became celebrities of sorts. They became the subjects of true crime shows, including last years nine-episode crime drama Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story on Netflix. A few weeks after that was aired, then-LA County District Attorney George Gascn announced he was reviewing new evidence in the case. On Oct. 24, 2024, prosecutors said they will petition the court to resentence the brothers. In May 2025, an LA County Superior Court judge granted them a new sentence of 50 years to life, making them immediately eligible for parole. What will the parole board consider?Erik and Lyle Menendez will be evaluated, individually, by a panel of two or three parole hearing officers. Eriks hearing is scheduled Thursday morning. Lyles will be held Friday. The board will assess whether the brothers pose an unreasonable risk of danger to society if released, considering factors like criminal history, motivation for the crime, signs of remorse, behavior while in prison and plans for the future, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.Nearly all of the Menendez family support the brothers release from prison. Milton Andersen, the brothers uncle who opposed their release, died from cancer in March. Could one receive parole and not the other? The brothers have separate hearings and will be evaluated independently of each other. Los Angeles trial attorney David Ring has said if one brother was a troublemaker in prison and the other wasnt, its conceivable that one could stay locked up while the other is freed. But Ring, whos not involved with the Menendez case, said thats unlikely. How soon could they get out?If granted parole, it could be months before the brothers are released from prison. The chief legal counsel has 120 days to review the case. Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom then has 30 days to affirm or deny the parole. If he approves it, they could then leave prison. Newsom has not made any statements indicating his position on the case, but said during a May press conference that he has both approved and rejected decisions by the parole board before. Where will they go if released?Thats not clear. The brothers family members, who have spoken out in favor of their release, havent shared details about where the brothers might live. WWW.404MEDIA.COPentagon Asks Its Civilian Employees If They Want to Work for ICEThe Department of Defense sent an email to civilian employees Wednesday asking them to sign up for a volunteer force that will help both Immigrations and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection with Donald Trumps mass deportation campaign. A job application page says the Department of Defense's civilian employees would be deployed to ICE and CBP sites and that they may be expected to work under austere conditions. The Secretary of Defense has authorized DoD civilian employees to participate in details to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to contribute to its operations along the Southern Border and its internal immigration enforcement activities, the email, seen by 404 Media, says. Selected Department employees will have a chance to offer critical support to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) as they fulfill the Presidents intent to ensure a safe and orderly immigration system. The Department of Defense has roughly 950,000 civilian employees. The email suggests that DHS is trying to recruit from within the Department of Defense for CBP and ICE, which has a vastly expanded budget and has been trying to hire new agents at a huge scale. The email, which was addressed to DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE CIVILIAN EMPLOYEES, asks current civilian Department of Defense employees to apply for the force on the USA Jobs website. The application page says the employees would be working largely in support roles at facilities along the U.S. border or ICE and CBP facilities throughout the interior of the United States Locations will extend to other geographic areas according to the need. Conditions at some locations could be austere. Deployment locations are based on need and are not negotiable. At the discretion of ICE and CBP, Detailees will be assigned to perform some or all of the following duties at the several ICE and CBP facilities throughout the interior of the United States:Data Entry: Enter and maintain data elements in relevant information systems;Operational Planning Support: Assist ICE and CBP in developing concepts of operation and campaign plans to execute internal arrests and raids as well as patrols along the Southwest Border (SWB);Processing and Throughput Logistics: Assist ICE and CBP in managing the physical flow of detained illegal aliens from arrest to deportation, as well as manage associated data;Logistical Support: Assist ICE and CBP in managing the logistical planning to move law enforcement personnel, operational capabilities, and support equipment across the United States to improve efficiencies and the effectiveness of operations. In recent weeks, the Trump administration deployed the Marines to Los Angeles and deployed the National Guard to Los Angeles and Washington D.C. The Los Angeles deployments were in response to widespread protests against ICE raids in the city, but the military itself was not conducting immigration enforcement. The email references a June memo sent by Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth to "senior Pentagon leadership" that reads "In support of the President' s priority of securing our borders, I am authorizing the detail of Department of Defense (DoD) civilian employees to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to support its operations at the United States southern border and with internal immigration enforcement."0 Comments 0 Shares 25 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMGay couple pelted with eggs in hate crime say police didnt take their case seriouslyA gay couple in San Francisco is raising doubts about the response by cops to a hate-motivated attack they experienced in the citys Castro district. On July 30, Devin Shaffer was holding hands with his husband, Bee Kittipalo, as they walked through the San Francisco gayborhood where they reside. At around 10 pm on that Wednesday night, Shaffer got popped in the side of the head with an egg, he told the Bay Area Reporter. Related Slain trans woman deadnamed & misgendered by police: She needs to be recognized for who she was When he told off the group of teens who hit him, they called him an anti-gay slur and began to throw more eggs. It felt like a paintball, he said. Shaffer was hit behind his ear and neck, according to his husband. The couple called 911. Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today SFPD officers arrived 15 minutes later, and according to Shaffer, they dissuaded me from a report because it would take more time for them.By Shaffers account, the responding officers gave him a choice: file a report then or allow the officers to pursue the suspects. Anxious to see his assailants caught, Shaffer chose the latter. But then Shaffer and his husband watched incredulously as officers took off in the opposite direction from where their attackers fled. When cops left the scene, they did not go in that direction, Shaffer said. The teens on bikes were going westbound, but the cops went eastbound. An accounting of the incident shared by SFPD backs up Shaffers recollection of events, to a point.Reached for comment, a police spokesperson said that body-worn camera video showed the officers offered to write a report, but told the victims that they could look for the suspects instead. Shaffer and Kittipalo said theyd prefer police try to apprehend the suspects. The spokesperson said, To me, it didnt feel like discouragement on the officers part to take the time to file a report. But the choice the couple was given, combined with officers heading away from where the suspects fled, indicated to Shaffer that, They had something more important to do. Thats how I took it.In fact, a report of the incident was produced at some point after the attack occurred, although SFPD didnt say when or by whom. It skirts the issue of the cops heading in the opposite direction from the perpetrators.Officers arrived on scene and met the reporting party who stated that a group of unknown juveniles on bicycles approached him and his husband, threw eggs at them and used homophobic slurs before fleeing westbound on 18th Street towards Noe, an SFPD Public Information Officer shared. Officers searched the area for the suspects to no avail. The reporting party declined medical treatment and further police action at the time of the call for service. Shaffer said hes at least grateful theres a public accounting of the attack, however it reached official records.I would say Im grateful they have all that information. Thats reassuring. What I was frustrated by was the language they used that was misleading. I was under the impression no report would be possible to make. That was the thing that upset me the most. The alleged assailants have yet to be apprehended.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Comments 0 Shares 30 Views 0 Reviews

GAYETY.COMHow Cowboy, Choker, Harness & Heart Captures Queer Desire in All Its Messy BeautyWhen it comes to queer nightlife, most film portrayals lean polished, if not sanitized. For director Nico Blanco, that didnt sit right. His new short film Cowboy, Choker, Harness & Heart, co-directed with Julia Ponce Daz, dives headfirst into the mess, intimacy, and humor that pulse inside a club bathroom stall.Building a Story Out of ChaosThe spark came from one of Blancos own dates, where both partners flirted with strangers mid-outing. Instead of smoothing the edges, he leaned into the chaos. I rarely see queer nightlife shown as it really is, Blanco said. I wanted to capture that play and self-discovery.When he pitched the idea to Ponce Daz, then a classmate at the American Film Institute, she was all in, on one condition: the title needed an upgrade.A Partnership Fueled by DesireThe directors had already collaborated in different roles at AFI and found themselves drawn to similar themes. For Ponce Daz, character depth became her way in. I wasnt the teams party girl, she joked. But I could dig into the characters, their desires colliding in this tight, specific space.Together, they landed on a guiding phrase: desire always wins. That theme became the films anchor.Recreating the Club BathroomThough set in a gritty bathroom, the team built the environment from scratch. Designer Marina Perez and cinematographer Olivia Segarra meticulously crafted every detail, down to cracked mirrors and scuffed postersto capture authenticity while giving the directors flexibility in lighting and camera movement. Its funny, because both of us usually prefer shooting on location, Ponce Daz said. But it became clear a built set would let us choreograph and still keep that raw energy.Casting From the Dance FloorInstead of relying solely on auditions, Blanco and Ponce Daz went straight into nightlife itself. Street casting not only shaped the films ensemble but redefined entire characters. Mistress, played by Amina Lakin, was rewritten once she was cast. We always wanted the film to reflect the real queers who make nightlife what it is, Blanco said. For Ponce Daz, scouting was both thrilling and nerve-wracking. Id spot someone magnetic, then shove Nico to go talk to them, she laughed.Balancing Improvisation and StructureWith only two shooting days, the team had to carefully choreograph scenes while leaving space for improvisation. That tension mirrored the film itself: structured yet unpredictable. When filming intimacy, you have to give actors the freedom to find what feels natural, Ponce Daz said. The edit leaned into this chaotic spirit. Working with editor Colton Warren, the directors trimmed down material to highlight the films kinetic energy, later adding original music from Lakin to give it its pulse. An Ending That SurprisesOriginally, Blanco envisioned a breakup finale. But with input from Ponce Daz and Segarra, the ending evolved into something less expected: a reflection of desires transformative, and often funny, power. The credit scene, featuring Mistress in a bathroom moment worthy of John Waters, is now one of their favorite touches.Whats NextBoth filmmakers are moving into features while still trading notes on each others work. Blanco recently premiered a new short, Mientime, at Newfest, while Ponce Daz is developing Digital Dolls, a Spanish coming-of-age story exploring early-2000s internet communities.Still, both hinted their partnership is far from over. As Blanco put it: Id love to co-direct another sexy, sad queer story with Julia.Ponce Daz didnt miss a beat: That might be my favorite genre of all time.Source0 Comments 0 Shares 30 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMDOJ demands private info on trans youth patients from 20 gender-affirming medical providersThe Department of Justice (DOJ) has issued subpoenas to medical providers who offer gender-affirming care to transgender youth, demanding that they provide private information on their young patients. The subpoenas demand billing documents, communication with drug manufacturers, patients Social Security numbers, addresses, emails, Zoom recordings, voicemails, encrypted text messages, as well as every writing or record of whatever type doctors have made from January 2020 to the current day, The Washington Post reported. While Attorney General Pam Bondi admitted last month to sending 20 subpoenas to hold medical professionals and organizations that mutilated children in the service of a warped ideology accountable, she didnt specify which organizations and individuals received the subpoenas. Anonymous informants told the aforementioned publication that some of the subpoena recipients (who got the subpoenas in June) operate in states with laws protecting gender-affirming care for youth. One trans civil rights activist called the incident an unprecedented and disgusting violation of medical privacy. Related Hospitals are ending their trans youth programs at an accelerating rate [The government] is using its investigative powers to target medical providers based on a disagreement about medical treatment rather than violations of the law, Jacob T. Elberg, a former federal prosecutor specializing in health care fraud, told The Washington Post. He added that the DOJ must show that the information it demanded is relevant to a legitimate law enforcement probe. The publication contacted numerous clinics and professionals offering gender-affirming care for youth, but none would say whether they had received a subpoena, citing fears of violent threats or government retaliation. Other hospitals have been closing their trans youth clinics and erasing any mention of gender-affirming care from their web pages to avoid federal threats to cut funding or pursue prosecutorial charges. Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today The subpoena is a breathtakingly invasive government overreach, said Jennifer L. Levi, senior director of transgender and queer rights at the LGBTQ+ legal advocacy group GLAD Law. Its specifically and strategically designed to intimidate health care providers and health care institutions into abandoning their patients.Fewer than 3,000 teens nationwide receive puberty blockers or hormone replacement therapy, according to a 2025 JAMA analysisof private insurance data,The Post noted. Responding to the news, transgender civil rights lawyer Alejandra Caraballo wrote via Bluesky, This is an unprecedented and disgusting violation of medical privacy, adding, The fact that no lawsuit has been commenced challenging these subpoenas in court is ominous. My best guess is that many of the providers have complied and now DOJ is potentially sitting on the records of thousands of trans youth covering everything from therapy notes to pre- and post-op photos.Though there is no federal law banning gender-affirming care, the current presidential administration has sought to eradicate the practice through a January executive order (that has since been blocked by several courts). The order instructed the DOJ to extend the time that patients and parents can sue gender-affirming doctors and to use laws against false advertising to prosecute any entity that may be misleading the public about the long-term effects of gender-affirming care.In April, Bondi issued a memo to DOJ employees, telling them to investigate and prosecute cases of minors accessing gender-affirming care as female genital mutilation (FGM); even though hospitals dont conduct such female genital surgeries. The memo threatened to jail doctors for 10 years if they provide gender-affirming care to young people. Gender-affirming care is supported by all major medical associations in the U.S., including the American Medical Association, the Endocrine Society, and the American Academy of Pediatrics, as safe and life-saving for young people with gender dysphoria. One doctor interviewed by The Washington Post called the federal governments crusade against gender-affirming care a toxic plan that will force some patients to detransition, potentially forcing them into adverse psychological and physical effects, including increased anxiety, depression, and the development of unwanted physical changes. This goes way beyond any degree of moral or ethical dilemma that any of us have ever experienced, the doctor said. It is completely scientifically and medically unfounded.Republican attorneys general in Texas and Tennessee have demanded similar patient information from providers of youth-centered gender-affirming care outside of their states, but they dropped their demands after courts blocked their efforts.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Comments 0 Shares 26 Views 0 Reviews

I remember we went to this chic, French-y watering hole. We sat at the bar, ordered our martinis, and suddenly were talking about our grandmothers who deeply affected and influenced our lives. I think thats where we profoundly bonded. This week, they took their bond to New York for a performance of Mamma Mia, where they were photographed holding hands. It was this photo that King Princess reposted, leading many to believe that the couple had just officially hard-launched their age-gap romance. This isnt the first time the two have attended Broadway performances together; previously, they attended a showing of Oh, Mary! last August. APNEWS.COMChina rushes to build out solar, and emissions edge downwardTibetan sheep graze at a solar farm in Hainan prefecture of western China's Qinghai province on Tuesday, July 1, 2025. (AP Photo/Ng Han Guan)2025-08-20T23:01:35Z TALATAN, China (AP) High on the Tibetan plateau, Chinese government officials last month showed off what they say will be the worlds largest solar farm when completed 610 square kilometers (235 square miles), the size of the American city of Chicago.China has been installing solar panels at a blistering pace, far faster than anywhere else in the world, and the investment is starting to pay off. A study released Thursday found that the countrys carbon emissions edged down 1% in the first six months of the year compared to a year earlier, extending a trend that began in March 2024.The good news is Chinas carbon emissions may have peaked well ahead of a government target of doing so before 2030. But China, the worlds biggest emitter of greenhouse gases, will need to bring them down much more sharply to play its part in slowing global climate change. For China to reach its declared goal of carbon neutrality by 2060, emissions would need to fall 3% on average over the next 35 years, said Lauri Myllyvirta, the Finland-based author of the study and lead analyst at the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air.China needs to get to that 3% territory as soon as possible, he said. Chinas emissions have fallen even as it uses more electricityChinas emissions have fallen before during economic slowdowns. Whats different this time is electricity demand is growing up 3.7% in the first half of this year but the increase in power from solar, wind and nuclear has easily outpaced that, according to Myllyvirta, who analyzes the most recent data in a study published on the U.K.-based Carbon Brief website. Were talking really for the first time about a structural declining trend in Chinas emissions, he said. Electricity from solar has overtaken hydropower in China and is poised to surpass wind this year to become the countrys largest source of clean energy. Some 51 gigawatts of wind power was added from January to June.Li Shuo, the director of the China Climate Hub at the Asia Society Policy Institute in Washington, described the plateauing of Chinas carbon emissions as a turning point in the effort to combat climate change. This is a moment of global significance, offering a rare glimmer of hope in an otherwise bleak climate landscape, he wrote in an email response. It also shows that a country can cut emissions while still growing economically, he said. But Li cautioned that Chinas heavy reliance on coal remains a serious threat to progress on climate and said the economy needs to shift to less resource-intensive sectors. Theres still a long road ahead, he said. One solar farm can power 5 million householdsA seemingly endless expanse of solar panels stretches toward the horizon on the Tibetan plateau. White two-story buildings rise above them at regular intervals. Sheep graze on the scrubby vegetation that grows under them. Solar panels have been installed on about two-thirds of the land. When completed, it will have more than 7 million panels and be capable of generating enough power for 5 million households. (AP Photo/Ng Han Guan) Share Share Facebook Copy Link copied Print Email X LinkedIn Bluesky Flipboard Pinterest Reddit Read More Like many of Chinas solar and wind farms, it was built in the relatively sparsely populated west. A major challenge is getting electricity to the population centers and factories in Chinas east. The distribution of green energy resources is perfectly misaligned with the current industrial distribution of our country, Zhang Jinming, the vice governor of Qinghai province, told journalists on a government-organized tour. Part of the solution is building transmission lines traversing the country. One connects Qinghai to Henan province. Two more are planned, including one to Guangdong province in the southeast, almost at the opposite corner of the country. A herder releases Tibetan sheep to graze at a solar farm in Hainan prefecture of western Chinas Qinghai province on Tuesday, July 1, 2025. APNEWS.COMBrazilian police say ex-President Bolsonaro had planned to flee to Argentina seeking asylumBrazils former President Jair Bolsonaro, center, temporarily allowed out of house arrest for medical exams, departs a hospital in Braslia, Brazil, Saturday, Aug. 16, 2025. (AP Photo/Eraldo Peres)2025-08-20T23:01:22Z BRASILIA, Brazil (AP) Brazils federal police said that messages found on the telephone of embattled former President Jair Bolsonaro show that at one point he wanted to flee to Argentina and request political asylum, according to documents seen Wednesday by the Associated Press. Bolsonaro is currently waiting for a Supreme Court ruling next month about an alleged coup attempt and he might face another case as police formally accused him and one of his sons of obstruction of justice in connection with his pending trial. The AP had access to the police investigation and reviewed the documents, which were sent to Brazils Supreme Court. The Argentine government did not respond a request for comment from the AP.Silas Malafaia, an evangelical pastor who is a staunch ally of Bolsonaros, was also targeted by police. He had his passport seized by investigators but was not formally accused of obstruction of justice. Brazilian federal police investigators said in a 170-page report that Bolsonaro had a draft of a request for political asylum from Argentine President Javier Mileis government dated Feb. 10, 2024. The former president saved the document two days after authorities searched his home and office as part of an investigation into an alleged coup plot. In a 33-page letter addressed to Milei, Bolsonaro claimed he was being politically persecuted in Brazil. I, Jair Messias Bolsonaro, request political asylum from Your Excellency in the Republic of Argentina, under an urgent regime, as I find myself in a situation of political persecution in Brazil and fear for my life, the Brazilian leader wrote. On Feb. 12, Bolsonaro reportedly spent two nights at the Hungarian Embassy in Braslia, fueling speculation among critics that he may have been attempting to avoid arrest.Brazilian federal police investigators also said in their report that Bolsonaros decision to ignore precautionary measures established for his house arrest and spread content to his allies sought to directly hit Brazilian democratic institutions, notably the Supreme Court and even Brazils Congress.____ S Pessoa reported from Sao Paulo.
