Post Pretty Sanctimonious For Mere Month Of Sobriety
TOLEDO, OHIn response to the holier-than-thou message on their social media feeds, sources reported Friday that a post by local man Jim Boisvert was pretty sanctimonious for someone who had only been sober for a month. Hes really laying it on thick about not needing alcohol to have fun considering hewas absolutely pounding beers as recently as the Fourth of July, said neighbor Lisa OToole, confirming that Boisverts comments about how much his skin and physique had improved were obnoxiously premature under the circumstances. Hes smugly prattling on about how hes reached a whole new level of intimacy without alcohol getting in the way, and meanwhile, theres still a stain on my patio from where he threw up after shots of Cuervo at my last cookout. Im just saying, maybe give it another few weeks before you get up on your high horse. OToole added that she still frequently sees Boisvert smoking a joint on his porch and he had offered her an Ambien only two days ago.The post Post Pretty Sanctimonious For Mere Month Of Sobriety appeared first on The Onion.

Report Finds Humans Waste 74 Billion Gallons Of Water Each Year Making Tea
NEW HAVEN, CTProviding data that bolsters long-running concerns about the beverage among environmental experts and activists, a report published Wednesday by researchers at Yale University has found that humans waste an astonishing 74 billion gallons of water each year making tea. We must stop this terrible practice of taking our most precious natural resource and, for no good reason, infusing it with tea leaves, rosehips, rooibos, and God knows what else, conservationist Regina Alexander said in response to the report, observing that once water had been contaminated by the tea-brewing process, it could no longer be used for bathing, cleaning, preparing food, making coffee, or any other beneficial purpose. It will be impossible to sustain the worlds growing population if our limited freshwater supply is squandered in such a reckless manner. We pour water over tea bags, let it steep for three to five minutes, and for what? The opportunity to take delicate sips and say we can detect subtle notes of peppermint? It makes no sense. The report follows a study published last month that found humans also waste a distressing amount of water each year boiling eggs. The post Report Finds Humans Waste 74 Billion Gallons Of Water Each Year Making Tea appeared first on The Onion.

Morgan Wallen Boycotts Grammys In Protest Of Desegregation
SNEEDVILLE, TNOpting out of the awards process for reasons he called both personal and political, country music star Morgan Wallen announced Friday that he would be boycotting the Grammys in protest of desegregation. After a lot of soul-searching, I cannot in good conscience submit my music for Grammy consideration knowing that all races are welcome, said Wallen, who explained that while rebuking the music award ceremony was itself a small action, it sent a powerful message to millions of fans about the will of the white race. Until the Grammys instates a whites-only category, I must remove myself from consideration. Since writing Im The Problem, Ive come to realize that the real problem in our society is race mixing. Someone needs to take a stand against ethnic integration, and if it has to be me, so be it. Who would want the approval of a bunch of desegregationists, anyway? Wallen added that while he knew some fans would be upset with the decision, they should not blame him, but instead the Jewish people. The post Morgan Wallen Boycotts Grammys In Protest Of Desegregation appeared first on The Onion.

Canada will match US tariff exemptions under USMCA trade pact, Prime Minister Carney says
Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney listens while touring the Royal Canadian Navy torpedo recovery vessel Sikanni at the Canadian Forces Maritime Experimental and Test Ranges (CFMETR), in Nanoose Bay, British Columbia, Monday, Aug. 4, 2025. (Darryl Dyck/The Canadian Press via AP)2025-08-22T15:56:04Z TORONTO (AP) Canada is dropping retaliatory tariffs to match U.S. tariff exemptions for goods covered under the United States-Mexico-Canada trade pact, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Friday. Carney said Canada will include the carve-out that the U.S. has on Canadian goods under the 2020 free trade deal that shields the vast majority of goods from the punishing duties. Canada currently has the best trade deal with the United States. And while its different from what we had before, its still better than that of any other country, Carney said.Carney and U.S. President Donald Trump spoke on the phone Thursday and Carney met with his Cabinet on Friday before making the announcment. The move is designed to reset trade talks between the two countries. The USMCA is up for review in 2026, and Carney called the trade pact a unique advantage for Canada at a time when it is clear that the U.S. is charging for access to its market. Carney said the commitment of the U.S. to the core of USMCA means the U.S. average tariff rate on Canadian goods remains one of its lowest, and that over 85% of Canada-U.S. trade continues to be free of tariffs. Canadian and Mexican companies can claim preferential treatment under the USMCA. Former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau initially put on retaliatory tariffs in response to U.S. tariffs, but before the U.S. tariffs were applied the Trump administration exempted goods covered by the free trade deal. Most imports from Canada and Mexico are still protected by the USMCA, but U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has said, I think the president is absolutely going to renegotiate USMCA.Preserving the free trade pact will be critical for Canada and Mexico. More than 75% of Canadas exports go to the U.S. while more than 80% of Mexicos exports go there.Trump has announced some sector specific-tariffs that do apply for Canada despite the USMCA known as 232 tariffs which are having an impact on the Canadian economy. There is a 50% tariff on steel and aluminum imports, for example. Canada and the United States have reestablished free trade for the vast majority of our goods. Canada will retain our tariffs on steel, aluminum and autos as we work intensivily to resolve the issues there, Carney said. Carney previously rescinded Canadas plan to tax U.S. technology firms after Trump said he was suspending trade talks with Canada over those plans, which he called a direct and blatant attack on our country. The prime minister disputed any notion that Canada is appeasing Trump, noting that Canada is matching what the U.S. is doing. The president and I had a long conversation, Carney said. There is a review of the free trade agreement in the spring. Were starting our preparations.Lana Payne, president of Unifor, Canadas largest private sector union, characterized Carneys announcement as Canada backing down, and said the country shouldnt back down unless the U.S. drops all punitive tariffs. Trumps attacks on auto, steel, aluminum, and forestry sectors are hurting Canadian workers in real time, she posted on social media. Walking back counter-tariffs isnt an olive branch. It only enables more U.S. aggression.

Jillian Michaels' ex girlfriend Jackie Warner calls her a 'Tasmanian devil' in resurfaced comments
Jillian Michaels has been in the hot seat lately, and resurfaced comments from her ex-girlfriend, Jackie Warner, certainly aren't helping. The former Biggest Loser trainer didn't come out looking that great after Netflix released its docuseries about the controversial reality show, Fit for TV: The Reality of the Biggest Loser. She was accused of contributing to a dangerous environment for contestants and having difficult relationships with her colleagues, and giving contestants caffeine pills, among other things.Michaels has refuted a number of those allegations and even threatened a lawsuit in response. But this is hardly her first brush with negative press, or with people sharing negative experiences with her. The docuseries led to podcaster Jess Rothschild creating a compilation of old interviews she'd done with Michaels' ex, former Bravo star and trainer Jackie Warner. Warner and Michaels dated for close to 7 years, starting before either of them were on TV.The full Hot Takes & Deep Dives compilation episode is 30 minutes long of Warner's complaints about Michaels, but one of the highlights is the time she straight up called Michaels "just a horrible person.""We were in love at a time, but I just got exhausted by her," she said. "I used to call her my Tasmanian devil. And whenever I'd say that, people around us would be like, 'Oh my god, yes.' Because even when she would go work out or train a client, she would look all over the gym, screaming, loud, cursing. We'd get thrown out of nice restaurants because she was screaming, loud, cursing. I couldn't take it."Warner also accused Michaels of spitting on people, stealing from tills when she worked as a bartender, and being absolutely loathed by fellow Biggest Loser alum Bob Harper."He would trash her like you would not believe," she said. "He's afraid of her."Michaels has also fired back against some of these accusations in the past as well.Ultimately, there's a lot of things where we may never know the truth, just different accusations from people with grudges and/or reputations to protect. But regardless of the past, Michaels is continuing to do plenty to show people exactly who she is in the present. (@) The only real question about Michaels at this point in time is why is anybody even still paying any attention to her at all?

A judge has ordered Alligator Alcatraz in Florida to wind down operations. What happens now?
A sign marks the entrance to the Baker Correctional Institution, Sanderson, Fla., Thursday, Aug. 14, 2025. (AP Photo/Gary McCullough)2025-08-22T17:48:53Z ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) A federal judge has put a stop to further expansion of the immigration detention center built in the Florida Everglades and dubbed Alligator Alcatraz, ordering that its operations wind down within two months. U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams in Miami wrote in her 82-page order late Thursday that Florida officials never sufficiently explained why an immigration detention center needed to be located in the middle of sensitive wetlands cherished by environmentalists and outdoors people. She also said that state and federal authorities never undertook an environmental review as required by federal law before Florida officials hastily built the detention camp which they championed as a model for President Donald Trumps immigration policies. That failure adversely affected the recreational, conservational, and aesthetic interests of the environmental groups and Miccosukee Tribe which brought the lawsuit, she said. Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis on Friday reacted to the ruling, saying he would not be deterred by an activist judge. We knew this would be something that would likely happen, DeSantis said at a news conference in Panama City. We will respond accordingly. You either have a country or you dont.Heres what to know about the situation and what might come next: Stay up to date with the latest U.S. news by signing up to our WhatsApp channel. What did the judge say?Williams said she expected the population at the facility to drop within 60 days by transferring detainees to other facilities. Once that happens, fencing, lighting, gas, waste, generators and other equipment should be removed from the site. No additional detainees can be sent to the facility, and no more additional lighting, fencing, paving, buildings or tents can be added to the camp. The only repairs that can be made to the existing facility are for safety purposes. However, the judge allowed for the existing dormitories and housing to stay in place as long as they are maintained to prevent deterioration or damage. Heres where detainees might end upDuring court hearings, lawyers said at one point there were fewer than 1,000 detainees at the facility, which state officials had planned to hold up to 3,000 people. Although the detainees could be sent to other facilities out of state, Florida has other immigration detention centers including the Krome North Processing Center in Miami, the Broward Transitional Center in Pompano Beach and the Baker County Detention Center managed by the local sheriffs office. Earlier this month, DeSantis announced plans for a second state-initiated immigration detention facility dubbed Deportation Depot at a state prison about 43 miles (69 kilometers) west of downtown Jacksonville. State officials say it is expected to hold 1,300 immigration detention beds, though that capacity could be expanded to 2,000 beds. How does this decision impact the other Alligator Alcatraz lawsuit?Civil rights lawyers had filed a second lawsuit over practices at Alligator Alcatraz, claiming that detainees werent able to meet with their attorneys privately and were denied access to immigration courts. Another federal judge in Miami dismissed part of the lawsuit earlier this week after the Trump administration designated the Krome North Processing Center as the court for their cases to be heard. The judge moved the remaining counts of the case from Floridas southern district to the middle district. Eunice Cho, the lead attorney for the detainees, said Friday that the decision in the environmental lawsuit wont have an impact on the civil rights case since there could be detainees at the facility for the next two months. Our case addresses the lack of access to counsel for people detained at Alligator Alcatraz, and there are still people detained there, Cho said. Status of the hundreds of millions of dollars in contractsNo one has said publicly what will happen to the hundreds of millions of dollars in contracts involved in the facility. DeSantis administration in July signed contracts with private vendors to pay at least $245 million to set up and run the center, according to a public database. That amount to be fronted by Florida taxpayers was in line with the $450 million a year officials have estimated the facility was going to cost. The governors office and the Florida Division of Emergency Management on Friday didnt respond to questions about whether Florida taxpayers would still be on the hook for the contracts if the facility is shuttered. Is this a final decision? No. This case will continue to be litigated. The state of Florida filed a notice of appeal Thursday night, shortly after the ruling was issued. As its name suggests, a preliminary injunction is only an initial action taken by a judge to prevent harm while a lawsuit makes its way through the court process and when it appears that one side has a good chance of succeeding based on the merits of the case.___Follow Mike Schneider on the social platform Bluesky: @mikeysid.bsky.social MIKE SCHNEIDER Schneider covers census, demographics and Florida for The Associated Press. Students suspended for bullying trans teens as Trump cracks down on school for supporting trans kids
Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS), Virginias third-largest school district, announced that it will suspend two Stone Bridge High School students for sexually harassing and discriminating against a transgender male student in the boys locker room earlier this year.Following a Title IX investigation, the district determined that the students had violated its policy prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sex, including sexual harassment and assault, in its educational programs and activities and imposed 10-day suspensions along with a no-contact order barring them from sharing classes with the transgender student. One parent withdrew her son from the school system and moved out of state this summer, though the disciplinary action will remain on his permanent academic record. Related GOP officials investigate school for supporting a bullied trans student GOP officials investigate school for supporting a bullied trans student Soon after taking office, President Donald Trump signed several executive orders rolling back transgender protections, including one that redefined sex to bar trans students from using locker rooms consistent with their gender identity. In February, America First Legal filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Educations Office for Civil Rights (OCR), alleging that LCPS and four other Northern Virginia districts violated the Trump administrations interpretation of Title IX by allowing transgender students to use restrooms and locker rooms matching their gender identity. OCR opened a formal investigation into the school directors in April. In May, Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares (R), who has supported transgender sports bans and restrictions on gender-affirming care, opened a separate inquiry into how the school district was handling its investigation into the locker room incident. Miyares referred the case to the Trump administrations Department of Education and Department of Justice, both of which have increasingly been used to target transgender communities. Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today By July, OCR concluded that the districtsincluding Loudounwere in violation of Title IX for basing facility access on gender identity rather than biological sex. The agency issued a proposed resolution agreement giving the schools 10 days to rescind their policies or face enforcement. LCPS refused, voting to maintain access for trans students. In response, the Department of Education designated the districts high-risk and shifted them to a reimbursement systema first step toward withholding federal funding. Last week, the Department of Education told 7News that it has begun the process that could cost each district tens of millions of dollars annually.Meanwhile, the students disciplined by LCPS are being represented by the conservative Founding Freedoms Law Centera Christian law firm connected to the anti-LGBTQ+ group Focus on the Family and America First Legal. Their attorney, Josh Hetzler, filed a Title IX appeal seeking to pause the suspensions and warned at a press conference that if LCPS fails again to do the right thing, we will have no choice but to pursue swift legal action in the coming days. Centrist think tank suggests banishing these words in order to fight back against MAGA
Third Way, a centrist think tank, issued a memo of 45 profoundly alienating words that should be avoided by Democrats and all who wish to stop MAGA and the current president. Their list includes several LGBTQ+-related terms like birthing person, cisgender, deadnaming, heteronormative, and LGBTQIA+ as well as numerous social justice terms like privilege and systems of oppression. For a party that spends billions of dollars trying to find the perfect language to connect to voters, Democrats and their allies use an awful lot of words and phrases no ordinary person would ever dream of saying, the groups memo states. The intent of this language is to include, broaden, empathize, accept, and embrace. The effect of this language is to sound like the extreme, divisive, elitist, and obfuscatory, enforcers of wokeness. Related Democrat convinces colleagues to stand up to Ron DeSantis anti-Pride agenda with impassioned speech Over the years weve conducted, read, and analyzed hours upon hours of focus groups, and weve yet to hear a voter volunteer any of the phrases below except as a form of derision or parody of Democrats, the group adds.Heres a list of their terms to be avoided: Insights for the LGBTQ+ community Subscribe to our briefing for insights into how politics impacts the LGBTQ+ community and more. Standing up to MAGAs cruel attacks on gay and transgender people requires creating empathy and building a broad coalition, not confusing or shaming people who could otherwise be allies. The groups memo aims to [put] a spotlight on the language we use that puts a wall between us and everyday people of all races, religions, and ethnicities [by] focusing on the eggshell dance of political correctness which leaves the people we aim to reach cold or fearful of admonishment. We are not out to police language, ban phrases, or create our own form of censorship, the group adds. Truth be told, we have published papers that have used some of these words as well. But when policymakers are public-facing, the language we use must invite, not repel; start a conversation, not end it; provide clarity, not confusion. But while the list points to confusion within the party on how to best connect with working-class voters (who increasingly supported the current president and Republicans in the 2024 elections), numerous studies also suggest that Democrats would attract voters by more closely embracing progressive economic and social policies.Meanwhile, on the right, the current presidential administration has banned over 250 words from federal communications and websites, including ones acknowledging LGBTQ+ people, racial discrimination, gender inequality, environmental change, and other social realities.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Kilmar Abrego Garcia is freed from Tennessee jail so he can rejoin family in Maryland to await trial
Kilmar Abrego Garcia, center, leaves the Putnam County Jail, Friday, Aug. 22, 2025, in Cookeville, Tenn. (AP Photo/Brett Carlsen)2025-08-22T19:08:08Z NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) Kilmar Abrego Garcia was released from jail in Tennessee on Friday so he can rejoin his family in Maryland while awaiting trial on human smuggling charges. The Salvadoran nationals case became a flashpoint in President Donald Trumps immigration agenda after he was mistakenly deported in March. Facing a court order, the Trump administration brought him back to the U.S. in June, only to detain him on criminal charges.Although Abrego Garcia was deemed eligible for pretrial release, he had remained in jail at the request of his attorneys, who feared the Republican administration could try to immediately deport him again if he were freed. Those fears were somewhat allayed by a recent ruling in a separate case, which requires immigration officials to allow Abrego Garcia time to mount a challenge to any deportation order. Earlier this week, Abrego Garcias criminal attorneys filed a motion asking the judge to dismiss the criminal case, claiming he is being prosecuted to punish him for challenging his removal to El Salvador.Abrego Garcia has pleaded not guilty to the smuggling charges, which stem from a 2022 traffic stop in Tennessee for speeding. Body camera footage from a Tennessee Highway Patrol officer shows a calm exchange with Abrego Garcia. There were nine passengers in the car, and the officers discussed among themselves their suspicions of smuggling. However, Abrego Garcia was allowed to continue driving with only a warning. A Department of Homeland Security agent testified he did not begin investigating the traffic stop until this April, when the government was facing mounting pressure to return Abrego Garcia to the U.S. Stay up to date with the latest U.S. news by signing up to our WhatsApp channel. Abrego Garcia, who had been held at the jail facility in Putnam County, has an American wife and children and has lived in Maryland for years, but he immigrated to the U.S. illegally. In 2019, an immigration judge denied his application for asylum but granted him protection from being deported back to El Salvador, where he faces a well-founded fear of violence, according to court filings. He was required to check in yearly with Immigration and Customs Enforcement while Homeland Security issued him a work permit.Although Abrego Garcia cant be deported to El Salvador without violating the judges order, Homeland Security officials have said they plan to deport him to an unnamed third country. Justice Department issues transcripts of interviews with Epstein ex-girlfriend Maxwell
Audrey Strauss, acting U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, points to a photo of Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell, during a news conference in New York on July 2, 2020. (AP Photo/John Minchillo, File)2025-08-22T18:56:18Z WASHINGTON (AP) The Justice Department on Friday released transcripts of interviews its No. 2 official did with Jeffrey Epsteins imprisoned former girlfriend as the Trump administration scrambles to present itself as transparent amid a fierce backlash over an earlier refusal to disclose a trove of records from the sex-trafficking case. The disclosure represents the latest Trump administration effort to repair self-inflicted political wounds after failing to deliver on expectations that its own officials had created through conspiracy theories and bold pronouncements that never came to pass. By making public two days worth of interviews, officials appear to be hoping to at least temporarily keep at bay sustained anger from President Donald Trumps base even as they continue to sit on other evidence they had suggested was being prepared for public release. Maxwell recalled knowing about Trump and possibly meeting him for the first time in 1990, when her newspaper magnate father, Robert Maxwell, was the owner of the New York Daily News.I may have met Donald Trump at that time, because my father was friendly with him and liked him very much, Maxwell said, according to the transcript. Maxwell said her father was fond of Trumps then-wife, Ivana, because she was also from Czechoslovakia, where my dad was from.Maxwell, a onetime socialite who was convicted in 2021 of helping lure teenage girls to be sexually abused by Epstein, was interviewed over the course of two days last month by Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche at a Florida courthouse. After her interview, Maxwell was moved from the low-security federal prison in Florida where she had been serving a 20-year sentence to a minimum security prison camp in Texas. Neither her lawyer nor the federal Bureau of Prisons have explained the reason for the move. The Epstein case had long captured public attention in part because of the wealthy financers social connections over the years to prominent figures including Prince Andrew, former President Bill Clinton and Trump, who has said his relationship with Epstein ended years before. Epstein was arrested in 2019 on sex-trafficking charges, accused of sexually abusing dozens of teenage girls, and was found dead a month later in a New York jail cell in what investigators described as a suicide. The saga has consumed the Trump administration over the last month following an abrupt two-page announcement from the FBI and Justice Department that Epstein had killed himself despite conspiracy theories to the contrary, that a client list that Attorney General Pam Bondi had intimated was on her desk did not actually exist and that no additional documents from the high-profile investigation were suitable to be released. The announcement produced outrage from conspiracy theorists, online sleuths and Trump supporters who had been hoping to see proof of a government coverup, an expectation driven in part by comments from officials including FBI Director Kash Patel and Dan Bongino, who on podcasts before taking their current positions had repeatedly promoted the idea that damaging details about prominent people were being withheld. Patel, for instance, said in at least one podcast interview before becoming director that Epsteins black book was under the direct control of the director of the FBI.The administration had an early stumble in February when far-right influencers were invited to the White House in February and provided by Bondi with binders marked The Epstein Files: Phase 1 and Declassified that contained documents that had largely already been in the public domain. After the first release fell flat, Bondi said officials were poring over a truckload of previously withheld evidence she said had been handed over by the FBI and raised expectations of forthcoming releases. But after a weekslong review of evidence in the governments possession, the Justice Department said last month that no further disclosure would be appropriate or warranted. The department noted that much of the material was placed under seal by a court to protect victims and only a fraction of it would have been aired publicly had Epstein gone to trial. Faced with fury from the base, Trump sought to quickly turn the page, shutting down questioning of Bondi about Epstein at a White House Cabinet meeting and deriding as weaklings supporters who he said were falling for the Jeffrey Epstein Hoax. The kerfuffle also created bitter divisions within the administration, as Bondi and Bongino angrily clashed at a White House meeting last month. Bongino was uncharacteristically silent on social media for several days after that. Rachel Maddow explains three shocking ways Donald Trump could be making elections useless
Earlier this week, out MSNBC host Rachel Maddow called out three major attacks on democracy currently being perpetrated by the presidential administration. These attacks include Donald Trumps demand that Texas (and several other states) redraw its congressional map to gerrymander several additional Republican seats, establishing a pretext to deny the results of the 2026 election by saying that the Census shouldnt count, and ending mail-in voting. That last idea, Maddow stressed, Trump got from Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. Related Rachel Maddow warns America: We now live in an authoritarian dictatorship Now I would caution you, as always, to watch what he actually does here and not just what he says he is going to do, but if Trump is essentially taking tactical advice from the Russian dictator Vladimir Putin about how to hold something that looks like an election but isnt actually an election, Maddow said, this is a little bit on the nose.International election monitors have roundly acknowledged that the outcomes of Russias elections are falsified, anti-democratic, and do not reflect the actual wills of Russian voters.

Erik Menendez Denied Parole After First Hearing in 36 Years
Erik Menendez, one half of the infamous Menendez brothers, has been denied parole after his first-ever hearing, nearly four decades after the murders of his parents shocked the country. On Thursday, a California parole board rejected Menendezs bid for release following a nearly 10-hour hearing, marking 36 years and one day since he and his brother, Lyle, killed Jose and Kitty Menendez inside their Beverly Hills mansion. Erik, now 54, attended the session via video from Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego. He will not be eligible for parole again for three years. Why the Board Said NoThe parole board cited several reasons for the denial, including Menendezs behavior behind bars, his earlier burglaries, and the shooting of his mother, which Commissioner Robert Barton called especially troubling. The killing of your mother especially showed a lack of empathy and reason, Barton told him. He added that Erik had other options at the time, including leaving home or alerting authorities. While acknowledging the complexities of sexual abuse cases, Barton emphasized that Eriks prison record, not just the original crime, was the deciding factor. The board listed a history of misconduct, including inappropriate behavior with visitors, smuggling contraband, misusing state computers, and using illegal cellphones, even while running rehabilitative programs. You have not been a model prisoner, Barton said. We find that disturbing.Eriks DefenseDuring the hearing, Menendez said he shot his mother because he felt she had betrayed him after learning she allegedly knew about his fathers abuse. He described being in a state of terror, panic and rage at the time of the killings.Still, Barton urged him to take accountability rather than wallow in disappointment. You can have a pity party, he said, or you can take to heart what we discussed.Family Support Runs DeepDespite the denial, Menendezs relatives, many of whom spoke on his behalf, expressed unwavering support. His aunt, Terry Baralt, the 85-year-old sister of Jose Menendez who is battling cancer, testified that she has forgiven her nephew.Erik carries himself with kindness, integrity and strength, she said. More than anything, I hope I live long enough to welcome him home. After the hearing, family members released a statement acknowledging their disappointment but maintaining hope. Our belief in Erik remains unwavering, they said. His remorse, growth, and the positive impact hes had on others speak for themselves.Next Up: Lyles HearingThe spotlight now shifts to Eriks older brother, Lyle Menendez, who faces his own parole hearing Friday. The brothers family said they are cautiously optimistic that Lyles rehabilitation will be recognized.Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman opposes parole for either brother, arguing they have not shown full insight into their crimes and continue to present a moderate risk to society. As Barton summed it up: Two things can be true, they can love and forgive you, and you can still be found unsuitable for parole.Source

Trump publishes lame list of woke Smithsonian exhibits that all feature brown & queer people
According to the White House, President Trump Is Right About the Smithsonian.Thats the title of an article the administration published on Thursday that aims to prove Washingtons federally-funded Smithsonian museums are the last redoubt of woke in the nations Capital (because the president says they are). Related Trump administration cracks down on content at Smithsonian Institution In classic Trump fashion, the roundup of programs, exhibitions, and ephemera mentioned in the article is long on right-wing trigger words and far short on context; transgender, LGBTQ+, and diversity figure prominently in the list of offending museum offerings. And a list is really all the White Houses article is. Its presented for the most part without comment, as though the mere existence of the 22 examples proves Trumps point that the Smithsonian is a hotbed of cultural sedition. The National Portrait Gallery was set tofeaturea painting depicting a transgender Statue of Liberty before the artist withdrew it.The list also goes after examples of diversity, in both race and viewpoints, that are at odds with Trumps. His whitewashed version of American history was on display earlier this week in his post to Truth Social criticizing the Smithsonian for discussing how bad Slavery was. Related Trump administration cracks down on content at Smithsonian Institution Examples of other exhibits not in line with Trumps version of American history:A exhibit [sic] at the American History Museumdepictsmigrants watching Independence Day fireworks through an opening in the U.S.-Mexico border wall and says Americas founders feared non-White immigration.'The American History Museums American Democracy exhibitclaimsvoter integrity measures are attempts to minimize the political power of new and diverse groups of Americans.' The Museum of American ArtusesAmerican sculpture to invite dialogue and reflection on notions of power and identity.'In that same Truth Social post slamming attention to American slavery, Trump declared the Smithsonian OUT OF CONTROL.A more accurate description would be out of his control, in a place where he and his attendants are clearly out of their depth.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.
