Student body riots over four boys accused of practising homosexuality
An all-boys secondary school in Uganda erupted into violent riots recently over four students accused of practising and promoting homosexuality. The four boys narrowly escaped the violence, though one was reportedly taken to a local hospital with serious injuries.According to Erasing 76 Crimes, which reports on the toll of international anti-LGBTQ+ laws, Saul Rwampororo, head teacher at Ntare School, told Ugandan media that the students goal was to harm the four boys. The rioters accused the schools administration and student leaders of taking no action against the students accused of being gay. Related Death & rape threats force straight activist to flee Uganda over anti-LGBTQ+ law They wanted to beat them, and two boys ran away while two others were saved by the administration, Rwampororo said. Even those who ran away, we caught up with them. One was hurt, but we took him to the hospital.Rwampororo said that after the four boys escaped, the rioting students turned to destroying school property. Police were called to deal with the violence. Its unclear whether any arrests were made, but Erasing 76 Crimes reports that an investigation is underway. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Rwampororo condemned the rioting, telling Ugandan media that such acts of violence undermine the values of education and respect we aim to instill at Ntare, and promising disciplinary action against the rioters.According to the outlet, students who spoke to Ugandan media claimed without evidence that the schools administrators were also involved in the alleged homosexual activity. This was just a wakeup call. If its not addressed, we will take it upon ourselves to stop the vice, one Ntare student said, noting that Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, who signed the countrys notorious Anti-Homosexuality Act (AHA), is an alumnus of the school. The president, who is an Old Boy of this school, assented to the Anti-Homosexuality Bill. It would be a shame to hear that such practices are happening here. The 2023 law, which has been roundly condemned by human rights organizations, members of the U.S. House of Representatives, former President Joe Biden, and even the late Pope Francis, punishes aggravated homosexuality including same-sex acts that transmit HIV with the death penalty and imposes a life sentence for recruitment, promotion and funding of same-sex activities. The law even bans identifying as LGBTQ+ in Uganda.According to one Ugandan healthcare worker, the AHA has had a devastating impact on the countrys public health, making it nearly impossible for clinics that specialize in LGBTQ+ healthcare issues to function while also discouraging LGBTQ+ people from seeking care. A 2024 report from Open for Business, a coalition of global companies dedicated to LGBTQ+ inclusion, estimated that the law had resulted in an economic loss of between $470 million and $1.6 billion in its first year due to healthcare costs from untreated HIV and depression, loss of tourism and worker productivity, and talent flight. Ugandan LGBTQ rights advocate Frank Mugisha pointed to the climate of hatred toward LGBTQ+ people in the country as the source of the Ntare riot. This radicalized environment makes schools, families, and communities unsafe for students who are simply trying to navigate the natural changes of adolescence or understand themselves, Mugisha said, according to Erasing 76 Crimes. The Ntare School case demonstrates how these pressures play out in real time. Students, whether out of curiosity, misunderstanding, or peer pressure, escalated a situation that might have been resolved with careful guidance and education.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Iconic writer Malcolm Gladwell says hes 100% against trans women in sports: This is nuts.
Famed social science writer Malcolm Gladwell has become the latest to speak out against trans athletes, reversing a stance he made clear in 2022 in support of their participation on teams that align with their gender identity. That year, Gladwell moderated a panel on trans inclusion in sports at the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference. He now says he was cowed into voicing his support for trans athletes and is ashamed of his performance at that panel. Related LGBTQ+ advocate Rep. Ro Khanna slams arrest of anti-trans activist over menacing social media posts The idea of saying anything on this issue I was, I believe in retrospect, in a dishonest way, I was objective in a dishonest way, he said during an appearance on The Real Science of Sport podcast.Gladwell did not mince words, spending almost ten minutes of the two-hour interview railing against trans inclusion in sports to the point of calling it crazy to support trans women athletes at all. Insights for the LGBTQ+ community Subscribe to our briefing for insights into how politics impacts the LGBTQ+ community and more. Subscribe to our Newsletter today It was a particular moment, which has passed, he said, seemingly implying he is basing his opinion on cultural trends. If we did a replay of that exact panel at the Sloan conference this coming March, it runs in exactly the opposite direction. And it would be, I suspect, near unanimity in the room that trans athletes have no place in the female category. I dont think theres any question. He emphasized he is 100 percent against trans women participating on womens teams. This argument has gone to the furthest extreme, he said. What the trans movement is not asking for is a place at the table; theyre not asking to be treated with respect and dignity. What theyre asking is for no one to question the considerable physiological advantages they bring to the sport This is nuts. When asked why attitudes trended toward support for trans athletes for a little while, he said it was because we all went crazy during the pandemic. What weve won is in some sense, we have returned to normal. This is contradictory to actual history. No state had a law banning trans kids from playing school sports with their gender before 2021. In fact, some states, like California, had laws protecting their right to play school sports for years at that point. The wave of anti-trans legislation started in 2021 many conservatives even cite the pandemic as key to rallying people to oppose trans rights and now over half of the states ban trans kids from playing school sports. He also said he thinks opinions have shifted because parents are realizing their daughters might be forced to compete against a biological male. Thats why its unsustainable because parents are not going to put up with this sort of bullsh*t.Gladwell was clearly proud of what he said, as he posted a link to the interview on social media and wrote, I went on my favorite podcast to talk about my favorite topic! I went on my favorite podcast to talk about my favorite topic! Malcolm Gladwell Talks Sport https://t.co/Akoi7qDos6 via @YouTube Malcolm Gladwell (@Gladwell) September 3, 2025Gladwell, who is Canadian, is considered by many to be a cultural icon and is known for his analyses of human psychology and behavior in books like The Tipping Point, Outliers, and What the Dog Saw. He has said in interviews that he tries to make his writing apolitical. He has spoken out against the president many times, though, calling his first term disastrous and saying it is completely baffling that he still had so much support during his third campaign for president, especially after he became a convicted felon. Despite his expertise on social trends, he said the presidents continued popularity is a phenomenon I cannot begin to explain. The current administrations vilification of trans athletes has been successful at pushing many who once supported trans inclusion farther to the right on the issue. Even some Democrats, like Arizona Sen. Ruben Gallego and California Gov. Gavin Newsom, have begun to speak out against trans athletes.Growing public opinion against trans inclusion in sports has not only led to the banning of trans athletes from leagues around the country, but also to national hate campaigns against trans children. 17-year-old AB Hernandez, for example, became the target ofhate and harassmentwhen the president of a local school board publicly doxxed the multi-sport athlete and outed her as transgender. Right-wing activists misgendered her and called her mom evil. Swarms of adults showed up toheckleher at games, Charlie KirkpushedGov. Gavin Newsom (D) to condemn her, and the presidentthreatenedto withhold federal funding from California over her participation. A February executive order also threatens to block federal funding for schools that allow trans girls and women to compete on girls and womens sports teams. The order directed the Department of Justice to prosecute schools that allow trans sports participation. Another orderrescinded the Biden administrations interpretation of Title IX. President Joe Bidens position was that Title IX prohibited anti-trans school policies as a form of sex-based discrimination, since its impossible to discriminate against transgender students without taking their sex into account.Policies on trans sports participation used to be decided by local school boards, state athletic associations, and governing bodies overseeing certain sports and schools. However, Republicans have passed bans on trans sports participation in 28 states all since the 2020 elections though courts have blocked six of the states from enforcing their bans. Nevertheless, the presidents executive ordersare meant topressure colleges, universities, and sports governing bodies, like the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA),to adopt trans sports bans.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

8th Graders Voice Drops 6 Octaves Over Summer
DEDHAM, MARemarking that the adolescent had undergone some pronounced developmental changes during the course of his vacation, middle school sources reported Tuesday that eighth grader Ryan Alcorns voice had dropped six octaves over the summer. According to eyewitnesses present in Mrs. Jetersons homeroom, Alcorn opened his mouth during classroom introductions to reveal that the high-pitched voice he had possessed just the previous spring had been replaced by a deep, basso profundo rumble that caused students desks to vibrate several inches across the floor as he spoke. The boy is said to have briefly summarized the events of his summer for his peers in a low-frequency register typically only encountered in blue whale vocalizations, with several cracks reportedly forming in the rooms painted cinder-block walls during an extended uh as he attempted to recall the name of a beach he had visited. Sources later confirmed the entire class had begun bleeding from the ears after Alcorn leaned back in his seat and let out a sonorous yawn. The post 8th Graders Voice Drops 6 Octaves Over Summer appeared first on The Onion.

Remote jobs are hard to get. Workers who did share tips for finding one
(AP Illustration / Peter Hamlin)2025-09-04T13:26:39Z NEW YORK (AP) When Kate Smith worked a 9-to-5 office job, she was burned-out, suffering from daily migraines and thinking, I cant do this for the rest of my life. She didnt have to. For her next role, Smith landed a remote, full-time marketing job that enabled her to travel the world. Her laptop lifestyle took her to Bali, where she lived and worked for a year-and-a-half. Every day, I was riding my scooter through the rice fields and thinking, I love my life, this is amazing, she said. And that feeling never fades. ... I feel so grateful for the freedom and flexibility. While Smith, 36, has worked remotely for more than a decade, the trend of ditching traditional office spaces to work from living rooms or beachfront shacks accelerated in 2020, when the coronavirus hit and workers who could began performing their jobs from home. Many people grew accustomed to the lifestyle change once they tasted the freedom and flexibility a home office afforded. Working parents enjoyed meeting children at the school bus. Others found more time for exercise, socializing and basking in nature once their jobs did not include long commutes. But after the pandemic subsided, many large companies began calling employees back into the office, creating fierce competition for jobs that could be done from anywhere. Many positions advertised as remote attract hundreds, if not more than a thousand, of applications, experts said. This article is part of APs Be Well coverage, focusing on wellness, fitness, diet and mental health. Read more Be Well. Fully remote is very rare now in the U.S., said Mark Ma, associate professor of business administration at the University of Pittsburgh. It is getting much more difficult and you need to look for the smaller firms or medium-sized firms ... and those firms do not provide as competitive financial packages as the big firms, but they try to attract talent by providing more flexibility. About 9% of paid U.S. job postings on social networking platform LinkedIn in July offered remote work, while those types of roles attracted 37% of applications, according to the company.Below, employers and people who havent returned to an office offer advice on how to land remote jobs in a competitive climate. Show your autonomyThe biggest concern for an employer hiring remote workers is ensuring they will do their work, said Carla Rover, co-founder of Strategy and Content, a startup that leverages artificial intelligence. I have approached people with a schedule, saying, This is how much I create each day. This is how much Ive built in a period of time, said Rover, who mostly has worked remotely since 2010. Assembling a strong portfolio showcases what you can do while working outside an office, Rover advised.Time management and independence, being self-motivated, are really critical, said Toni Frana, career expert at FlexJobs, a platform dedicated to helping people find remote or flexible work.If youve worked remotely before, highlight that on your resume. List communication tools youve used, such as Slack or Microsoft Teams, said Dawn Fay, operational president at staffing firm Robert Half International. Call out that you have worked remotely, independently, for X amount of time successfully, Fay added. You really want to stress that. Stick with a role similar to your current jobAfter moving on from the office job that made her miserable, Smith created a side hustle coaching other professionals who longed for a nomadic lifestyle. Her coaching eventually grew into a full-time job. When looking to transition into remote work, find a job thats similar to your current role instead of competing with better-qualified candidates for jobs that require more experience, she advised. Get your foot in the door ... and then from there work your way to the long-term goal, Smith said. You can also try to convert your current job into a remote role. Thats what Courtney Sandifer attempted after her husband, 60, had a heart attack and underwent cancer treatment within the same year. He retired early and they bought a small property in Mexico near the beach, hoping to reduce stress. We just got tired of the rat race, Sandifer said. Sandifer, 44, loved her job working in video production in Houston. But she took a risk, telling her employer they were moving and she wanted to do her job remotely. The company agreed she could be a contractor but no longer a staff member. She lost her benefits, a big financial hit. But it was worth it to be able to edit video by a pool and to know shell be able to visit her son in New Zealand, where hell be attending college, without taking much time off from work, she said. If you have kids, its so much easier to be who you want to be with a remote job, Sandifer said. Thats what came into focus for me: How will my family be the happiest and healthiest in the long term? It may not be the most lucrative, but you have to consider your own mental health. Where remote jobs are growingWhere you live matters. Europe and Australia have more remote jobs than the U.S., Ma said. Lawmakers in Victoria, Australia, have said they plan to introduce legislation that would give workers the legal right to work from home two days a week. Dozens of countries, including Thailand, Italy and Brazil, offer digital nomad visas which allow foreigners with remote jobs to stay and work for an extended period of time.Different industries and occupations are more conducive to the remote work scene. In the U.S., education, administrative and social media positions are the fastest-growing full-time remote jobs, while nursing, telehealth and licensed therapists are among the top titles for part-time remote work, according to Frana at FlexJobs.Smith said she sees opportunities to find remote jobs in marketing, product management, sales, human resources, talent acquisition, software development, engineering, customer support, data analysis and financial services.Read the fine printPJ Hruschak, 54, has been looking for remote work in web design, writing or editing since he was downsized from a full-time job two years ago. He lives outside Cincinnati, Ohio, and wants to avoid commuting and be able to work from home when his 9-year-old son is sick. But often when he finds jobs advertised as remote, he reads further into the description to learn the employer wants candidates to live in a particular city or be available to work in the office several days per week. Its definitely frustrating, Hruschak said. It almost feels like its a waste of time.Search aggressively For Francesca Conti, an investor who works in venture capital, working remotely from London for a Swiss company has allowed her to travel internationally and visit extended family in the U.S. The opportunities are out there, but theyre very few and far between, she said. Conti recommends attending industry or alumni events to meet contacts that can help in the search. Even though you want a remote opportunity, those relationships need to be made in person. They cant be made remotely, Conti said. Remote opportunities are very unique in nature, so just be even more aggressive in the search and understand that it might take a little bit more time, but my experience has been highly worth it.___Share your stories and questions about workplace wellness at [emailprotected]. The rainbow emojis path from weather icon to LGBTQ+ shorthand
You see it in text messages, bios, and Pride posts: The rainbow emoji has become one of the most recognizable digital symbols of LGBTQ+ identity. What started as a simple weather icon has evolved into a global sign of Pride and community. The rainbow beginningsEmoji first appeared in Japan in the late 1990s as a way to make digital communication more visual. Designed by artist Shigetaka Kurita, emojis became shorthand in an increasingly digital world. The rainbow sat alongside the sun, clouds, and raindrops. Back then, the rainbow wasnt tied to identity, just part of a weather set.In 2010, the Unicode Consortium expanded emoji to be standardized across devices, and the rainbow was included.Adopted by queer communitiesThe rainbow had been connected to LGBTQ+ life since Gilbert Baker designed the rainbow flag for San Francisco Pride in 1978. So when emoji became part of everyday communication in the 2010s, LGBTQ+ people started using as a signal. It showed up in Twitter bios, Instagram posts, and dating profiles. Dropping a rainbow in a caption or hashtag was a way to say Im here and Im queer or as a sign of support from allies. This small symbol expanded to have a big meaning. The emoji has also been noticed by anti-LGBTQ+ factions. In April 2025, Russian activist and artist Alisa Gorshenina was arrested and served 10 days in jail under the Russian LGBT Propaganda law for using a rainbow emoji in an Instagram post.Pride month mainstreamingAs Pride grew in visibility, the rainbow emoji became a shorthand every June. Brands, influencers, and media leaned on in posts and ads. It became an easy way to join Pride conversations, often paired with hashtags like #LoveIsLove and #Pride.By the mid-2010s, had shifted from weather to culture. Google sends parents of LGBTQ kids to conversion therapy websites. Why?

And how do these results influence LGBTQ kids, their parents, and Americans at large who are searching for help? Related LGBTQ+ spaces say All are welcome. Asian men know better. Subscribe to our Newsletter today The results were alarming and raised an urgent question: With nearly40% of LGBTQ youth seriously considering suicidejust last year, what happens when a queer teen or the parent of a gay kid in crisis turns to Google? | Photos courtesy of participants Mark Just, Genna and Melanie Brown, April Samberg, Tommy ONeil. Photo of Genna and Melanie by Kaoly Gutteriez.Im Christian, my daughter is a lesbian, Melanie Brown, a Southern Baptist from High Point, North Carolina, types into Google. When Brown presses enter,Bible Bulletin Boardcomes up as the third result, with the suggestion of offering hope for change, and lead[ing] the way to the alternative to homosexuality. It goes on to explain that homosexuality is contrary to Gods Word. It is sin and as always results in sins destructive effects on the individual and on those close to them.In the living room, Browns 15-year-old daughter Genna, with her dog on her lap, Googles accurate information on gay kids and what to do.Focus on the Family (FOTF) is the first result. She clicks the link and lands on the platform of a hyper-religious organization known for promoting conversion therapy and labeling her sexuality as sinful. The site, which presents itself as a reputable religious source, features a tab titled Understanding Homosexuality and a section under their resources for Homosexuality. Itstates: [FOTF] is committed to upholding Gods design for the expression of human sexuality: a husband and wife in a marriage. It offers suggested reading on redemption from a gay lifestyle, along with 11 counseling resources aimed at changing sexual orientation, includingThe Alliance for Therapeutic Choice and Scientific Integrity, which guarantees professional assistance for persons who experience unwanted homosexual attractions. The language is intentionally padded, which means Genna and her momand many of the other millions of Christian parents of queer kidsmay never know that Google led them to aSouthern Poverty Law Center-designated anti-LGBTQ hate group. FOTF is known for its long-standing opposition to LGBTQ rights, for spreading anti-LGBTQ disinformation and for framing homosexuality and transgender identity as sinful and disordered. In South Boston, Virginia, Tommy ONeil Googles, My daughter just came out as trans and Im a Christian. As a father of two, he wants whats best for his kids. According to Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, Googlessecond result, ONeil should recognize that God doesnt make mistakes when assigning sex and give sympathy for those who are indoctrinated in the transgender cult. What ONeil might not know is that this seminary made the list ofWorst Campuses for LGBTQ students. And in 2016, it was granted an exemption to Title IX, allowing it todiscriminate against LGBTQ students for religious reasons.Thousands of miles away in Anchorage, Alaska, 38-year-old bisexual woman April Samberg Googles, I am bisexual and have a husband who is Christian, am I going to hell?Thethird resultis once again an article by FOTF that tells April that same-sex-attracted strugglers and transgender and homosexual lust and behavior are wrong. In Cincinnati, 44-year-old Mark Just Googles, accurate information on homosexual kids and what to do. FOTF is the top search result.I dont feel good about it, Just told Uncloseted Media. Its disturbing because if there are people out there who want to accept and understand their children or loved ones, this is what theyre being pointed to.[I feel] fear for the queer kids with Christian parents who will be seeing that and thinking its good advice, and sorrow for the kids with parents who already have, says Genna Brown, whowas a self-loathing, suicidal kid who thought God would punish her for being gay before she came out to her now accepting parents. Its pretty awful that this is whats being pushed for advice. This has no doubt harmed people.Uncloseted Media also asked folks in Taiwan, Lebanon, China, Hong Kong, Canada and India to Google similar queries. All of them had FOTF turn up as a top search result. Why Does Google Allow This?Google, like other search engines, compiles information and directs users to various websites by referencing the titles of web pages that it judges to be most reflective of what was searched.Googles algorithm is notoriously a black box, says Jesse Ringer, founder of Method and Metric, a search engine optimization (SEO) growth company. Thats intentional to keep their competitive advantage. What we do know is that Google ranks search results by first crawling the web with an automated program called spiders to follow links from page to page and collect data.It uses text matching to identify documents that it thinks are relevant to a query and then ranks them based on a combination of popularity, freshness, location and previous links clicked. But for people searching for reliable information, its process can be problematic.Google doesnt rank based on accuracy, but on popularity and query matching, says Dirk Lewandowski, professor of information research and retrieval at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences. This is based on clicks and a network of how many other links are directed to this website. Of course, users click what is shown in the first position. So we have kind of a rich get richer. How to Get a High RankingAs websites with the highest rankings continue to receive more clicks, websites like FOTF can also employ other tactics to keep their prominent placement.Backlinkingthe process of having other web pages hyperlink back to your siteis one of the ways to maintain your high ranking.Backlinks are a big part of popularity. So the relationship between other websites linking to this source is a big part of Googles algorithm, says Ringer. There are SEO businesses that build link farms so that the content of their clients can go higher. They create a network effect and they link to each other. It is not unreasonable to think that [FOTF] has hired either an SEO person or theyve hired an external agency to contribute to that.According to Francesca Tripodi, assistant professor at the University of North Carolina School of Information and Library Science, ranking can also be gamed by matching keywords to content. Tripodi looked at the metadata of progressive and conservative companies and found that conservative content creators are much better at doing this. They are savvy at creating new sets of words and tagging their content with them, she says. Thats not something Im seeing with progressive content creators.Tripodi says that not only does conservatism thrive online, it might be the only perspective returned. They are well-funded companies with large production budgets and effective digital marketing teams, she wrote in a 2019testimonyabout conservatism and Google searches. This is why when you search for liberal phrases like gender identity or social justice the top returns are conservative content creators. Google declined to speak on record with Uncloseted Media for this story. In an email, a spokesperson said: Like any search engine, Google indexes the content thats available on the open web, relying on systems like keyword matching to surface relevant results. We are largely guided by local law when it comes to removing pages from search results. What If Its Harmful or Illegal? The United States notoriously protects harmful or misleading contentincluding anti-LGBTQ hate speechunder the First Amendment. The situation in [other countries] is a bit different than in America, Lewandowski says. For instance, Holocaust denial is illegal in Germany. So Google bans these sites, but they dont ban them in the U.S.Section 230of the U.S. law protects Americans freedom of expression online by implying that we should all be responsible for our own actions and statements on the internet. This law largely takes legal pressure off of Google. And in 2003, an Oklahoma courtruledthat Googles rankings are subjective opinions and thus constitutionally protected. Googlespoliciesfor tamping down on harmful content dont apply to web results. Thus, there is little moderation on the web pages that pop up for Americans who use the search engine. The spokesperson for Google says that [they] hold themselves to a high standard when it comes tolegal requirementsto remove pages from Google search results and that they dont remove web results except for child sexual abuse, highly personal information, spam, site owner requests, and valid legal requests. But according tothe company, determining whether content is illegal is not always a determination that Google is equipped to make.Tripodi says this might be why groups like FOTF are still showing up, even though conversion therapy isillegal in 23 states. She says these groups may have found a loophole in Googles policy by tricking the search engine into thinking they are providing resources and not simply a recommendation for conversion therapy. What Can Google Do to Fix This?Google has a responsibility for what is coming up in their results because people trust [them], says Lewandowski. They think something is correct or accurate because it is number one in Google.Fifteen-year-old Genna Brown is one of the 85% of Americans who feel this way, according to a 2025study.Isnt the first result typically ranked most credible? she says. Because I typically trust the first result more. Its pretty concerning what comes up when you search for these things, Ringer says. There needs to be more done to educate the people who are doing the searches on understanding news and information. But vulnerable groups, like LGBTQ kids who are living in households where they are told they are going to hell and parents who are often confused and in crisis themselves, are being led by Googles algorithm to believe that being queer is wrong. 1000% yes, these results concern me, says Genna Brown. As such, we cant verify the following results. But she agrees with Brown in that Google carries an ethical responsibility for the content it chooses to rank and promote. As a global corporation that gobbles up all other possibilities for information, Google has a responsibility to ensure that its content is accurate and not harmful, Tripodi says. 'Young Sheldon' star Raegan Revord comes out as nonbinary
Young Sheldon star Raegan Revord has officially come out as non-binary!The actor confirmed what some fans have known for awhile now during a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight."It's so cool because, growing up, whenever I would see a celebrity or whoever come out as nonbinary or queer or anything, I was like, 'Oh my God, this is so cool, I see myself in you," they said. "And now it's so crazy to have that experience where I'm now that person and there might be a kid somewhere who's like, 'Oh my God, I see myself in you.'""That's such an insane thing 'cause I was in that kid's shoes at some point in my life," Revord added.Although the 17-year-old is just now confirming all of this to a publication, it's hardly news to anyone following them on social media.Revord switched their pronouns to "they/them" on their official socials some time ago, but that isn't the whole story. Earlier this year, they revealed themselves to be popular Twitch streamer SettingSunset_.Under that alias, they had been speaking openly about their struggles getting people to use the correct pronouns and identifying as a lesbian as early as 2023. (@) Revord has recently been doing promotion for a sapphic fake dating young adult novel they wrote called Rules for Fake Girlfriends, which is available for purchase as of this week.

Trumps Fed nominee says hed keep his White House job even if confirmed by the Senate
Stephen Miran, chairman of the Council of Economic Advisors, walks at the White House, June 17, 2025, in Washington. (AP Photo/Alex Brandon, File)2025-09-04T16:01:08Z WASHINGTON (AP) Stephen Miran, President Donald Trumps pick to join the Federal Reserve board, said Thursday that he would remain a White House employee even if the Senate confirms him to fill an unexpired term at the central bank.Miran, who was nominated to fill a gubernatorial term set to expire in January, made the disclosure at a hearing before the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee. He said that on the advice of his lawyers he would take an unpaid leave of absence as chair of the White House Council of Economic Advisers. Miran later said he would only resign from the Republican administration if he were nominated for a longer term at the Fed.His answer instantly triggered alarm bells about the Feds independence, suggesting that the central bank could ultimately become subservient to Trumps whims instead of its congressional mandates to keep prices stable and maximize employment. Political control of the Fed could erode the faith that the American population and investors worldwide place in the U.S. economy, which could threaten global markets and national prosperity. Democrats blasted Mirans plan to keep his day job at the White House. Your independence has already been seriously compromised, Sen. Jack Reed, D-R.I., said. You are going to be technically an employee of the president of the United States but an independent member of the board of the Federal Reserve. Thats ridiculous. Mirans hearing reflected the broader battle over Trumps efforts to gain control of the Fed. Because of the possible negative impacts on the economy, the Fed has tried to act based on the economic data rather than electoral considerations.Trump, however, has engaged in a prolonged campaign of pressuring and mocking Fed Chair Jerome Powell for not cutting the benchmark interest rate to Trumps liking, a move that could end up pumping more money into the economy and creating greater inflationary risks. The Fed has yet to reach its 2% inflation target and has held its rates steady in part because of the uncertainties created by Trumps import taxes. The president has also sought to apply pressure on the Fed over its renovation of its headquarters and other buildings and has tried to fire Lisa Cook as a Fed governor over allegations that she committed mortgage fraud. Cook has said she will not resign and has sued to overturn Trumps move.Miran, in his answers to senators, played down the controversy over Trumps desire to control the Fed. Miran said that if he were confirmed to fill the rest of Adriana Kuglers term, he would act based on his own judgments about inflation and employment.Look, the president nominated me because I have policy views, that, I suppose that he liked, he said told the committee chairman, Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C. If Im confirmed to this role, I will act independently, as the Federal Reserve always does, based on my own personal analysis of economic data.Even Republicans saw the risks to the loss of Fed independence. Sen. John Kennedy, R-La., asked Miran to commit to ignore all the rhetoric from all politicians and make his own choices. But Miran arrives with the baggage of having worked for a president who has expressed disdain for the Feds tradition of independence. Trump has argued that he knows more about monetary policy as he has called for the Feds benchmark rate to be cut by a full 3 percentage points. In June, a Fed forecast of future rates showed emerging divisions among the policymakers. Seven projected no rate cuts at all this year, two indicated one cut and 10 forecast at least two reductions. This is a crisis moment for the Federal Reserve, for the financial system and for the economic stability of families all across this country, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., told reporters before the start of the hearing.Warren added that the Fed boards independence and their efforts to make decisions based on whats really happening in the economy not what the politics are is something that benefits every single American. Donald Trump wants to burn that to the ground. Under questioning by Warren, Miran declined to say whether Trump lost the 2020 presidential election to Democrat Joe Biden, saying only that Congress certified Biden as president. Miran declined under questioning to contradict Trumps unfounded claim that the Bureau of Labor Statistics had faked jobs numbers for political reasons.Trump fired the bureaus head after severe revisions to the July employment report showed the economy was potentially weaker than Trumps claims of a golden age. There are also questions about how Miran interprets the Feds independence. He said that the president is entitled to express his opinion on monetary policy and that consideration of climate change as an economic force by Fed officials would be a politicization of the central bank. In a 2024 paper he co-wrote for the Manhattan Institute, Miran argued that the Fed was already politicized by highly political, personnel who move freely between the White House and the central banks headquarters. In that same paper, Miran wanted to heighten presidential control, saying that having Fed board members serve at the will of the president would confer greater democratic legitimacy on the Fed.By indicating that he could return to the White House, Miran seemed to undermine one of his own recommendations in his paper. To further insulate board members from the day-to-day political process, they should be prohibited from serving in the executive branch for four years following the end of their term, the paper said. European advocate general recommends requiring member states to recognize trans peoples genders
The Advocate General for the European Court of Justice is recommending that all EU member states be required to issue identity documents reflecting their citizens lived gender identity. The Courts AG Jean Richard de la Tour argued that national rules that do not allow legal gender recognition may violate European Union law, including the right to free movement and residency across all EU member states. Related Theres a drop in worldwide LGBTQ+ support. One group is largely to blame. The non-binding opinion was issued ahead of a case brought by a Bulgarian transgender woman, whose request to change the gender on her birth certificate was denied under Bulgarian law.A Bulgarian Supreme Court decision in 2023 affirmed a ban on legal gender recognition and changes to official documents for transgender individuals, ruling that sex is fixed at birth. Subscribe to our Newsletter today The Southeastern European nation joined the EU in 2007 after decades under communist rule. It has yet to recognize same-sex marriage or civil unions. While the Advocate Generals opinion is only advisory, the verdicts in about two-thirds of cases argued before the court align with an AGs recommendation. The case of the Bulgarian national, identified as Shipov in court documents, was forwarded from the Bulgarian Supreme Court of Cassation, which said Bulgarian domestic law couldnt be reconciled with EU law. The AG concurred in his opinion issued Thursday.Shipov was assigned male at birth, according to the EU high court, has undergone hormone therapy, and now identifies as a woman. The discrepancy between her feminine appearance and her official identity documents as a person of the male sex causes problems she encounters on a daily basis, in particular looking for a job,a summary of the AGs opinion reads. Shipov applied for a gender change on her identity documents but was denied because her birth certificate didnt reflect her current gender identity. A request to change the sex on her birth certificate was also refused. The AG said that the Bulgarian law requiring the indication of the persons sex based solely on the birth certificate gives rise, due to the purpose of that document, to an obligation for that State to legally recognize the lived gender identity and to record it in that document.De la Tours opinion was that any law which, by failing to recognize the gender identity of a transgender person, prevents that person from enjoying a right guaranteed by EU law, such as obtaining an identity document enabling them to freely exercise their right to move and reside within the territory of the Member States, constitutes a restriction on that right. The AG also recommended that changes to an identity document cannot be subject to the production of evidence of gender reassignment surgery.Such a requirement would undermine, in particular, the right to respect for private life, the ECJ summary said.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Sarah McBride called out GOPs schoolyard taunts so Nancy Mace decided to prove her point
Anti-trans Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) attacked her transgender colleague, Rep. Sarah McBride (D-DE), whose presence in Congress inspired Mace to launch her national hate campaign against trans rights. In response to a speech McBride made criticizing Republicans for focusing on culture war issues rather than improving the lives of American families, Mace wrote on social media, You are a man and wear a dress. Stop it. Related Nancy Mace flees speaking engagement after she saw how few people showed up While McBride is, in fact, a woman, men who wear dresses are also allowed to participate in civic life. Maces response proved McBrides point that Republicans are hyper-focused on what people are wearing and where they go to the bathroom rather than on issues that actually affect the majority of Americans. We will not take a lecture on decorum from a party that incited an insurrection, McBride said in her speech at the House Democratic Issues Conference. I appear to live rent-free in the minds of some of my Republican colleagues. The American people deserve serious legislators, serious elected officials who are focused on bringing people together to deliver real results for the American people, not to play games and not to engage in schoolyard taunts. You are a man and wear a dress. Stop it. https://t.co/ir4Embbh15 Nancy Mace (@NancyMace) September 3, 2025Mace has used McBride to boost her own political career, launching a crusade against McBrides right to use the womens bathroom at the Capitol after she was elected to Congress. In the months since McBrides win, Mace has posted several messages a day to her social media accounts opposing trans peoples rights. She hasreferred to McBride as it,used anti-trans slurs in committee hearings, andthreatened to fight Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX)for calling out her transphobia.Mace has misgendered and deadnamed McBride; claimed that McBride, trans people, and their allies are a threat to the safety of women and girls; repeatedly discussed McBrides genitals on national television; and called her mentally ill. McBrides reaction to her colleagues anti-trans abuse has divided the trans community. Many activists have expressed disappointment that she has decided to ignore it rather than actively resist it, but McBride continues to defend her approach. In November, she said she would comply with the GOPs vicious ban on trans women using womens bathrooms at the Capitol andcautioned Americansnot to be deceived by the rights obsession with her.I think we are all united that attempts to attack a vulnerable community are not only mean-spirited but really an attempt to misdirect, she said onFace The Nation. Because every single time we hear the incoming administration or Republicans in Congress talk about any vulnerable group in this country, we have to be clear that it is an attempt to distract from what they are actually doing. McBride emphasized throughout the interview that her focus would remain on serving the people of her district and that she would not let Republicans divert her attention from their attempts to roll back key benefits for the American people.Every single time we hear them say the word trans, look what theyre doing with their right hand. Look at what theyre doing to pick the pocket of American workers, to fleece seniors by privatizing Social Security and Medicare. Look what theyre doing undermining workers. Every bit of time and energy that is used to divert the attention of federal government to go after trans people is time and energy that is not focused on addressing the cost of living for our constituents. There is a real cost for the American worker every time they focus on this. She alsorecently spokeon Ezra Kleins podcast about the need for the trans movement to rethink its approach to changing peoples minds. Were not in this position because of the movement or the community, but clearly what weve been doing over the last several years has not been working to stave it off or continue the progress that we were making eight, nine, 10 years ago. We became absolutist not just on trans rights but across the progressive movement and we forgot that in a democracy we have to grapple with where the public authentically is and actually engage with it, she said.Politicians, she continued, have a duty of walking people to a place, rather than forcing them to catapult there.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

GOP senator tricks RFK Jr into saying president deserves Nobel Prize for support of COVID vaccines
A Republican senator got Health and Human Services Secretary Robert Kennedy Jr. to agree that the president should receive a Nobel Prize for expediting the approval of COVID-19 mRNA vaccines, despite Kennedys opposition to the vaccines.Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA) said at a Senate Finance hearing today that he believes that the president deserves a Nobel Prize for Operation Warp Speed, a program that accelerated vaccine testing during the pandemic. He then asked Kennedy if he agreed: Mr. Secretary, do you agree with me that the president deserves a Nobel prize for Operation Warp Speed?Yeah, absolutely, Senator, Kennedy replied. His response was probably not expected, considering his opposition to vaccines in general and the COVID-19 vaccines in particular. Let me ask you, but you just told Senator [Michael] Bennet that the COVID-19 vaccine killed more people than COVID, Cassidy pointed out. I did not say that, Kennedy replied. Senator, I just want to make clear, I did not say that. Kennedy made comments when he was questioned by Sen. Michael Bennet (D-CO) about how he believed that the COVID-19 vaccines killed people, but he didnt say anything about the number of people he believes they killed. Kennedy got into a more heated exchange with Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA), where he said he didnt even know how many people died from COVID-19 in the U.S. I dont think anybody knows that, Kennedy said, blaming data chaos at the CDC.You dont know the answer of how many Americans died from COVID! Warner said. This is the secretary of health and human services! Do you think the vaccine did anything to prevent additional deaths?Again, I would like to see the data and talk about the data, Kennedy responded. You have had this job for eight months and you dont know the data about whether the vaccine saved lives? Warner said incredulously. The Secretary of Health and Human Services doesnt know how many Americans died from COVID, doesnt know if the vaccine helped prevent any deaths, and you are sitting as Secretary of Health and Human Services? How can you be that ignorant? Over 1.2 million people have died of COVID, according to CDC data.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Giorgio Armani, Legendary Italian Designer Who Redefined Global Fashion, Dies at 91
Giorgio Armani, the Italian designer who reshaped the way the world dresses and turned his name into a global empire, has died at 91. His company announced Thursday that he passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones. The Armani Group called him its creator, founder, and tireless driving force, noting that he worked until his final days.Reinventing StyleArmanis vision was synonymous with understated elegance. He stripped away excess and brought a sense of ease to tailoring that changed both mens and womens wardrobes. His softly structured suits, particularly the womens power suit, became a defining silhouette of the late 20th century.Hollywood helped propel Armani to international fame. Diane Keaton wore his blazer-and-skirt ensemble to the 1978 Oscars, signaling a shift in red carpet fashion. Just two years later, Richard Geres sleek Armani suits in American Gigolo cemented the brand as a symbol of sophistication.Building an EmpireWhat began as a clothing line in 1975 soon expanded into a lifestyle empire. Armanis name now stretches across haute couture, fragrance, cosmetics, eyewear, home furnishings, even luxury hotels. Forbes valued his fortune at $12.1 billion this year, ranking him among the richest designers in history.Still, Armani described himself as a perfectionist who was never satisfied, constantly refining his work. His commitment to design was so consuming that his absence from Milan Mens Fashion Week this June, his first missed show in nearly five decades, sparked concern about his health.Tributes from Fashion and BeyondDonatella Versace called Armani a giant who made history and will be remembered forever. Vogues Anna Wintour praised his ability to understand both power and elegance, saying he dressed women in a way that reflected their ambitions.Italys prime minister Giorgia Meloni called him an icon, a tireless worker, a symbol of the best of Italy, while deputy prime minister Matteo Salvini honored him as a master of style admired across the globe.Champion of ChangeArmani wasnt just shaping aesthetics, he also pushed industry standards forward. In 2006, following the death of model Ana Carolina Reston, he became one of the first designers to ban underweight models from his runway. His stance marked a turning point in fashions conversation about health and body image.A Lasting LegacyKnown to Italians as Re Giorgio (King Giorgio), Armani left an imprint on culture far beyond clothing.
