Democrats release suggestive letter to Epstein purportedly signed by Trump, which he denies
President Donald Trump speaks to the White House Religious Liberty Commission during an event at the Museum of the Bible, Monday, Sept. 8, 2025, in Washington. (AP Photo/Evan Vucci)2025-09-08T19:12:25Z WASHINGTON (AP) Democrats on the House Oversight Committee released on Monday a sexually suggestive letter to Jeffrey Epstein purportedly signed by President Donald Trump, which he has denied.Trump has said he did not write the letter or create the drawing of a curvaceous woman that surrounds the letter. He filed a $10 billion lawsuit against The Wall Street Journal for a report on the alleged letter. The letter was included as part of a 2003 album compiled for alleged sex trafficker Epsteins birthday. The president has denied having anything to do with it. Democrats on the House Oversight Committee received a copy of the birthday album on Monday as part of a batch of documents from Epsteins estate. The White House did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment.Trump has denied writing the letter and creating the drawing, calling a report on it false, malicious, and defamatory. These are not my words, not the way I talk. Also, I dont draw pictures, Trump said. The letter released by the committee looks exactly as described by the The Wall Street Journal in its report. The letter bearing Trumps name and signature includes text framed by a hand-drawn outline of what appears to be a curvaceous woman.A pal is a wonderful thing. Happy Birthday and may every day be another wonderful secret, the letter says. MICHELLE L. PRICE Price covers the White House. Released late last month, Tears is the second single from Carpenters latest album Mans Best Friend. The album debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 chart over the weekend, scoring the singer her second No. 1 album. At the VMAs, Carpenter also won the award for Best Album for her breakthrough 2024 album Short n Sweet. During her acceptance speech, the pop star gave a special shout-out to the queens who performed with her. This world, as we all know, can be so full of criticism and discrimination and negativity, she said. So, to get to be part of something that can bring you light, make you smile, make you dance Im so grateful. So grateful to do that. As Out notes, this year marked the first time the VMAs were simulcast live on CBS as well as MTV, bringing Carpenters trans rights message to a wider, network TV audience.Carpenter wasnt the only pop star to shout out the LGBTQ+ community at the awards show. While accepting the award for Best Pop for her longform video Brighter Days Ahead which she co-directed Wicked star Ariana Grande thanked her therapists and gay people. LGBTQ+ Catholics make history by joining rare Jubilee Year pilgrimage
In a historic first this weekend, LGBTQ+ Catholics joined the churchs Jubilee Year pilgrimage to St. Peters Basilica at the Vatican, a once-every-25-year ritual that grants a plenary indulgence to participants.I cant imagine this happening before Pope Francis or before Pope Leo, Jesuit Friar James Martin, the founder of LGBTQ+ ministry Outreach, told The Catholic Reporter. I think its pretty historic. Related Pope meets with LGBTQ+ Catholic advocate: It was wonderful. It was very consoling & encouraging. Pope Francis, who died in April, designated the theme of this years Jubilee Pilgrims of Hope. An estimated thirty million Catholics will make the journey to Rome over the year-long celebration, which began on Christmas Eve 2024.More than 1,400 LGBTQ+ pilgrims from 20 countries made the pilgrimage to Rome this weekend, taking part in prayer vigils, masses, and other spiritual events. Many were moved to tears as they passed through the Holy Door to St. Peters, an entrance to the basilica opened only for Jubilee Year observances. The procession traditionally symbolizes reconciliation. Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today The Vatican walked a fine line in its endorsement of the LGBTQ+ pilgrimage. Their participation, organized by Italian advocacy groupJonathans Tent, was included in the Vaticans official Jubilee calendar, but Vatican officials stressed the listing was logistical rather than an endorsement. It ensures organizers and pilgrims alike can plan accordingly, said a spokesperson for the Vaticans evangelization office. You could say its semi-official, said Friar Martin, who met privately with Pope Leo last week on his own trip to Rome. Martin described that meeting as very consoling and very encouraging. He wanted to continue with the same approach that Pope Francis had advanced Martin said of Leos embrace of the LGBTQ+ community. It was very much a hopeful message of continuity. At a packed mass service at Romes historic Chiesa del Ges, the largest Jesuit church in the city, Bishop Francesco Savino delivered a homily that emphasized Jubilee celebrations are meant to restore hope to those on societys margins. The remarks drew a standing ovation from the congregation of more than 1,000.Pope Francis was the first and only pontiff chosen from the Jesuit religious order. He made history with his inclusive message for the LGBTQ+ community, declaring all people Todos, todos, todos should be welcomed by the Church. Francis endorsed blessings of LGBTQ+ couples and hosted transgender women at the Vatican. Homosexual people have a right to be in a family, Francis said in 2020. They are children of God. Nobody should be thrown out or made miserable over it.Not only are LGBTQ people marching and walking to say that theyre part of the Church, said Francis DeBernardo, executive director of LGBTQ+ ministry New Ways, of the Jubilee pilgrimage first, but official Church institutions are welcoming them and helping them to tell their stories.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Meet every out LGBTQ+ player in 'SNL' season 51
After a few surprise exits among the cast, Saturday Night Live has announced the final lineup for its 51st season.Among the returning players are some fan favorites viewers will be thrilled to see coming back, including Michael Che, Colin Jost, Bowen Yang, Sarah Sherman, Mikey Day, Chloe Fineman, Marcello Hernandez, Ego Nwodim, James Austin Johnson, Andrew Dismukes, and, of course, Kenan Thompson, Jane Wickline and Ashley Padilla will also be returning as featured players. Ben Marshall (of Please Do Not Destroy) is being bumped to a main cast member, while newcomers Jeremy Culhane, Kam Patterson, Tommy Brennan, and Veronika Slowikowska will be joining the show.To celebrate the upcoming new season, here's a list of all the out LGBTQ+ cast members for season 51 of SNL.1. Bowen YangYang joined SNL as a writer back in 2018, but was bumped up to featured player just a season later. Despite carving out a solid career for himself in movies and TV since then, Yang has remained an integral part of SNL, bringing us iconic sketches like the Sara Lee social media disaster with Harry Styles....and that's it.To be fair, not everyone on the SNL cast has labeled themselves, so there certainly could be other LGBTQ+ players among the remaining 17. But all-in-all, it's a pretty bleak look for the showalbeit not necessarily one that's too surprising. There have actually only been nine out LGBTQ+ cast members in SNL history. Maybe we just got a little too accustomed to there actually being more than one present at a time during the early 2020s. And maybe it's just a little more disheartening than usual when we're living through a time where LGBTQ+ acceptance is dipping, making visibility more important than ever. Yet we've also been seeing a decrease in on-screen representation.Hopefully SNL will have plenty of queer hosts and musical guests on during the new season, but we look forward to the day when we can finally at least say there have been 10 LGBTQ+ cast members on the show during its 50+ years on the air.

Navy Ousts Trans Healthcare Specialist After Libs of TikTok Post
A Navy commander specializing in transgender health care was dismissed after right-wing account Libs of TikTok flagged her role to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. The Targeted OfficerCommander Janelle Marra, a senior medical officer and deputy medical director for transgender care in the Navy, was abruptly removed from her position after her biography was circulated online. Marra had served since 2004, beginning her career through a health professions scholarship program. She later directed medical services for Expeditionary Medical Facility Bravo. Her dismissal followed a viral post by Libs of TikTok, the social media account run by Chaya Raichik, known for targeting LGBTQ+ people and institutions. The account highlighted Marras role in providing transgender health care, asking Hegseth to look into this. The post quickly spread, drawing more than 10 million views, 7,000 reposts and 20,000 likes. Hours later, Hegseth responded on X, formerly Twitter, with a short message: Pronouns updated: she/her/fired.A Wider Political ContextHegseth, a former Fox News host, has long opposed diversity initiatives. After Donald Trump returned to the presidency in January, he signed an executive order rolling back diversity, equity and inclusion programs in the federal government and military. Hegseth, who recently shifted titles from secretary of defense to secretary of war, vowed to enforce the order aggressively. The conservative commentator has also argued against women in combat roles and once dismissed the phrase our diversity is our strength as the dumbest in military culture. His stance has drawn criticism from service members who see diversity as vital to morale and mission readiness.Support for MarraWhile her dismissal sparked outrage across social media, colleagues described Marra as a dedicated physician whose work improved thousands of lives.Bree Fram, an astronautical engineer and author, praised her record on LinkedIn: Janelle Marra is an outstanding Navy doctor who volunteered to serve and has done far more than this country asked of her. She always went the extra mile to take care of others.Fram noted that Marra was named the top female doctor in the military health system in 2018 and had served as a regimental surgeon for Marine units. Thousands of military members are living better lives today thanks to Dr. Marra, Fram wrote. Others are alive thanks to her. And this is the thanks she gets from her nation? The FalloutMarra has not publicly commented on her firing, but her removal underscores the clash between ongoing attacks on LGBTQ+ service members and the efforts of advocates who argue that inclusion strengthens the armed forces. As Libs of TikTok continues to target individuals, the decision to terminate Marra signals how closely the Pentagon under Hegseth is aligning with culture-war politics at the expense of career service members.Source

Gottmik and Felix da Housecat Drop Electrifying Single Holy Disco Ahead of Tour
Gottmik is turning the dance floor into a sanctuary. The drag artist and fashion provocateur has teamed up with Chicago house veteran Felix da Housecat for Holy Disco, a thumping track that merges cathedral drama with glitter-drenched nightlife.Released as the lead single from Gottmiks forthcoming debut EP, out September 26, the song is designed for late-night rituals. A booming chorus, pulsing beat, and theatrical production come together to create what feels like a disco service for the misfit faithful.A Dance-Floor MassHoly Disco thrives on tension, between sacred and profane, ritual and revelry.Ive always loved the balance of holy and unholy, sacred and nightlife, Gottmik said in a statement. With Felix, I wanted to create a track that feels like a ritual on the dance floor a disco mass for the misfits.Felix da Housecat echoed that vision. When Gottmik came to me with this idea, I knew it would be something wild, he said. This isnt just a track. Its church at 3 a.m. with a disco ball for an altar.First Look at Gottmiks DebutThe single is fans first taste of Gottmiks upcoming EP, a project that promises to expand the Drag Race alums artistic reach beyond the runway and into music. Known for blending avant-garde fashion with a sharp pop sensibility, Gottmik is now staking a claim on the queer music landscape. The artwork for Holy Disco, designed by multimedia artist Jess Cuevas, captures the songs high-drama aesthetic. Cuevas, who has worked with Madonna and Nike, brings his signature distortion of reality into the piece, fusing nightlife imagery with surreal religious motifs. From Drag Stage to Concert StageThe release arrives just as Gottmik embarks on The Knockout Tour, a 48-city North American run co-headlined with Violet Chachki. The live show blends drag spectacle with rock-and-roll edge, think aerial stunts, original music, burlesque, fashion, and full-scale concert energy. With Holy Disco as its unofficial anthem, the tour doubles as both a celebration of queer artistry and a glimpse into Gottmiks evolving career.About the ArtistsGottmik made history as the first trans man to compete on RuPauls Drag Race and has since become a global figure in fashion, nightlife, and music. Felix da Housecat, a two-time Grammy nominee, has been shaping house and electro for decades, from underground Chicago to worldwide dance charts.Together, theyve created a track that bridges eras, genres, and cultures, a glitter-streaked hymn for the queer dance floor.Source

How the arrival of the internet helped this trans woman learn about herself
LGBTQ Nation asked our elder readers to tell us how life has changed for LGBTQ+ people in the past decades, and we got a lot of responses! Related Transitioning as an adult means coming to terms with the youth I never had She explained that she didnt have access to information or credible science about gender when she was growing up. There were no real words to describe what I thought, Martha told LGBTQ Nation. She said that she used to search the card catalogue at the library for information on crossdressers but none was found. Its gross, she said.Despite that, shes not ashamed either. We brag about how geographic we are on any given day," McKinnon said. "Maybe I shouldn't be saying this in a magazine. If youve never heard of geographic tongue before, you arent alone. So we reached out to New York-based cosmetic dentist Dr. Sandip Sachar to explain what it is, how its treated, and whether LGBTQ+ people are more at risk. What is geographic tongue? Is it common? While geographic tongue, also known as benign migratory glossitis, isnt dangerous for your health, it does change the way your tongue looks, which can be distressing to people before they know what it is. It is a harmless inflammatory condition that causes smooth, red patches that appear on the surface of the tongue, Dr. Sachar tells PRIDE. They are often surrounded by slightly raised white or yellow borders. It gets its name since the patches shift in size, shape, and location as time goes on, which almost looks like a map. Most people probably have never heard of geographic tongue, but its actually fairly common, according to Dr. Sachar. The condition is seen in 1 to 3% of the general population, although many people go through life not realizing they have it until a dentist or doctor points it out to them, which means the number is probably much higher. What are its symptoms? How does it manifest?Geographic tongue is usually asymptomatic meaning people with the condition have no symptoms but some people will experience discomfort or increased sensitivity to spicy, salty, or acidic foods, Dr. Sachar explains. The condition impacts the top and sides of the tongue and occasionally can occur in other areas of the mouth as well and looks like irregular, red, flat patches with white borders that come and go, or shift locations over days or weeks, she says.Is it contagious? Can it be contracted? How does one get geographic tongue?Luckily, geographic tongue isnt contagious and you cant get it from kissing, sharing silverware, or drinking from the same glass. It is not due to an infection, Dr. Sachar assures. It is an inflammatory response of unknown origin, possibly linked to immune system sensitivity, nutritional deficiency, stress, or hormonal factors. Many people with the condition are alarmed when they are first diagnosed because they fear that the changes in the the appearance of their tongue is a sign of cancer or infection, but geographic tongue is completely benign and does not increase the risk of oral cancer, she says. What are the treatments? There is no cure for geographic tongue, but since there are usually no symptoms and it is a benign condition, a cure isnt really necessary. However, there are some treatments for the small percentage of patients who have pain. For patients who experience burning or irritation, I often recommend avoiding foods that irritate it, and using topical anesthetic gels or antihistamine mouth rinses, Dr. Sachar says. Occasionally, steroid rinses or vitamin supplementation may be helpful, but most cases resolve on their own without intervention. How long does it last? Does it recur?Geographic tongue is chronic condition that can go away on its own and then recur throughout someones lifetime. Lesions may disappear for weeks or months and then return, sometimes in different areas of the tongue, Dr. Sachar explains. While it can be persistent, it remains benign and does not transition or progress into cancer."Are LGBTQ+ people at any greater risk? While there is no evidence that LGBTQ+ folks are more likely to be diagnosed with geographic tongue, the stress queer people face and a compromised immune system from being HIV-positive could both contribute to the condition.Factors like chronic stress, hormonal fluctuations, and autoimmune disorders, which may be more prevalent or undiagnosed in certain LGBTQ+ populations have been linked to geographic tongue, Dr. Sachar says. Additionally, some HIV-positive patients have presented with geographic tongue, though this is a broader immune related association rather than a direct correlation with sexual orientation or with gender identity.Source cited:Dr. Sandip Sachar, a New York-based cosmetic dentist and the founder and owner of Sachar Dental NYC.

Stonewall Community Foundation Unveils First Reclaiming Our Power Grantees
The Stonewall Community Foundation has announced the first recipients of its new Reclaiming Our Power grant program, a multi-year initiative aimed at strengthening grassroots LGBTQ+ organizations across the country. With an initial investment of $825,000, the foundation will fund 15 organizations over three years, beginning with the first ten groups selected this August. Each will receive multi-year general operating grants designed to bolster efforts in two core areas: community resilience and power building.Investing in LGBTQ+ FuturesFounded in 1990, Stonewall Community Foundation has distributed more than $28 million to LGBTQ-focused nonprofits in 132 cities nationwide. Brandt Legacy Fund, offers $20,000 per year for two years, with the option of a $15,000 extension in the third. It is among the foundations most ambitious funding cycles to date.A Competitive StartWhen the call for applications opened this spring, more than 180 organizations applied, requesting nearly $10 million in total support. That demand, according to Stonewall leaders, highlights both the need for and the creativity within grassroots LGBTQ+ spaces nationwide.Through this first cohort, were uplifting groups that embody the resilience and imagination of our movement, said Elisa Crespo, executive director of Stonewall Community Foundation. Theyre advancing critical work, from healthcare access and legal aid to policy advocacy and safety initiatives.Program director Maryse Pearce emphasized the urgency of this work: LGBTQ+ communities are under attack at levels we havent seen in decades. These grants are about investing in their power, their safety, and their future. Two Paths to ChangeThe Reclaiming Our Power program focuses on two funding tracks:Community Resilience: supporting direct services that help LGBTQ+ people survive, heal, and thrive.Power Building: advancing organizing, policy, and systems change to expand justice and equity.Stonewall says the initiative builds on its long tradition of resourcing organizations that are often overlooked, particularly those led by people of color, trans communities, and others living at the intersection of systemic inequities.2025 Grantee PartnersThe inaugural cohort includes organizations working in fields as varied as education, legal advocacy, harm reduction, and community safety:Transformative Schools, New York, NYOut My Closet, New York, NYMashup Nashville, Nashville, TNChosen Family Law Center, New York, NYSex Workers Project, Urban Justice Center, New York, NYTraction Project, Portland, ORTherapy Center of Philadelphia, Philadelphia, PAThe Queer Trans Project, Jacksonville, FLBuilding Out Safer Spaces and Skill Sets, Tucson, AZSt. Louis Anti-Violence Project, St. Louis, MOFive additional grantees will be selected in 2026, expanding the reach of the initiative. Rupert Murdochs family reaches deal on who will control media empire after his death

(Photo by Jordan Strauss/Invision/AP, File)2025-09-08T21:44:02Z Rupert Murdochs family has reached a deal on control of the 94-year-old moguls media empire after his death, ensuring no change in direction at Fox News, the most popular network for President Donald Trump and conservatives. The deal creates a trust establishing control of the Fox Corp. for Lachlan Murdoch, Ruperts chosen heir who has been running Fox in recent years, along with his younger sisters, Grace and Chloe.Lachlan Murdochs three older siblings, Prudence MacLeod, Elisabeth Murdoch and James Murdoch, give up any claims to control of Fox in exchange for stock currently valued at $3.3 billion, according to The New York Times, which first reported news of the deal.It ends a drama that has been like a real-life version of HBOs Succession, only with huge financial implications and an impact on U.S. politics. Fox and its conservative opinion dominates news ratings, at points this summer more popular than the general broadcast networks, and is the go-to network for Trump and his team to spread news. Howard Stern returns to SiriusXM radio show after trolling listeners
Howard Stern speaks at the 2018 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremonies in Cleveland, on April 14, 2018. (Photo by Michael Zorn/Invision/AP, File)2025-09-08T12:18:48Z NEW YORK (AP) Howard Stern, the popular and highly paid radio host, returned to SiriusXMs airwaves Monday after trolling listeners into thinking he had departed his long-running show.Stern, 71, who evolved from his shock jock origins to become a respected interviewer, enlisted a seemingly flustered Andy Cohen at the top of The Howard Stern Show to pretend to be his successor. This was supposed to be a cleaner hand off. Im kind of winging it, said Cohen.Stern then came on the air and thanked the Bravo personality, who has his own SiriusXM show and podcast, for agreeing to do the bit. The stunt was the culmination of weeks of promos that promised a big reveal, following swirling speculation that Sterns show would be canceled. The tabloids have spoken: Howard Stern fired, canceled, one promo video said. Is it really bye-bye Booey? The speculation grew after Stern postponed his return from a summer break last week. While he did return Monday, Stern did not announce that he had reached a new contract with SiriusXM. His current deal expires at the end of 2025.Heres the truth: SiriusXM and my team have been talking about how we go forward in the future. Theyve approached me, theyve sat down with me like they normally do, and theyre fantastic, Stern said.Stern joining what was then Sirius Satellite Radio Inc. in 2006 made him one of the highest-paid personalities in broadcasting and was a game-changer for both the company and the nascent satellite radio industry. His importance was highlighted on the SiriusXM homepage tabs included For You, Music, Talk & Podcasts, Sports and Howard. SiriusXM in the years after Stern joined has become home to top podcasts Call Her Daddy, SmartLess, Freakonomics Radio, Last Podcast on the Left, 99% Invisible and Conan OBrien Needs a Friend and features such personalities as Trevor Noah, Kevin Hart and Stephen A. Smith. But SiriusXMs subscriber base has been slowly contracting, with the company reporting 33 million paid subscribers in the second quarter of 2025, a net loss of 68,000 from the first quarter and 100,000 fewer than the same period in 2024. It is a battling a saturated satellite market and competition from free, ad-supported platforms like Spotify.Stern extended his contract with SiriusXM twice before, in 2010 and again in 2020 with a five-year, $500 million deal, Forbes reported. Hes recently had newsy and intimate chats with Lady Gaga and Bruce Springsteen.Hes been with me and the company going on two decades, and so hes pretty happy, but hes also able, like many great artists, to stop whenever he wants, SiriusXM president and chief content officer Scott Greenstein told The Hollywood Reporter in 2024. Nobody will ever replace them. We would never try to replace them.Stern, who has liked to call himself the King of All Media, rose to national fame in the 1980s during his 20-year stint at the then-WXRK in New York. At its peak, The Howard Stern Show was syndicated in 60 markets and drew over 20 million listeners. Stern was lured to satellite radio by the lucrative payday and a lack of censorship, following bruising indecency battles with the Federal Communications Commission and skittish radio executives. His past on-air bits had included parading strippers through his New York studio and persuading the band then known as The Dixie Chicks to reveal intimate details about their sex lives. His 1997 film Private Parts became a box office hit and offered a raw, humorous look at his rise to fame. He has also authored several bestselling books and served as a judge on Americas Got Talent from 2012 to 2015.___This story first was published on Sept. 8, 2025. It was updated on Sept. 8, 2025, to correct that Howard Stern is not leaving SiriusXM and an announcement of his departure was a prank. New Banksy mural of a judge beating a protester to be removed from outside London court
Undated photo released by Banksy of the new artwork by the artist which portrays a judge beating a protester with a gavel at the Royal Courts of Justice in London. (Banksy via AP)2025-09-08T14:26:08Z LONDON (AP) A new mural by elusive street artist Banksy showing a judge beating an unarmed protester with a gavel will be removed from a wall outside one of Londons most iconic courts, authorities said Monday. The mural appeared Monday and depicts a protester lying on the ground holding a blood-splattered placard while a judge in a traditional wig and black gown beats him with a gavel. Banksy posted a photo of the work on Instagram, his usual method of claiming a work as authentic. It was captioned Royal Courts Of Justice. London.Security officials outside the courthouse covered the artwork Monday with sheets of black plastic and two metal barriers, and it was being guarded by two officers and a security camera.Because the Victorian gothic revival style building is 143 years old, the mural will be removed with consideration for its historical significance, according to HM Courts and Tribunals. The Royal Courts of Justice is a listed building and HMCTS are obliged to maintain its original character, it said in a statement. Listed buildings are considered the countrys most significant historic buildings and sites and are protected by law. While the artwork doesnt refer to a particular cause or incident, activists saw it as a reference to the U.K. governments ban on the group Palestine Action. On Saturday almost 900 people were arrested at a London protest challenging the ban. The courts have weighed in on the Palestine Action case, with judges initially rejecting the organizations request to appeal its ban. A High Court court judge then allowed the appeal to go forward, though the government is now challenging that decision. Banksy began his career spray-painting buildings in Bristol, England, and has become one of the worlds best-known artists. His paintings and installations sell for millions of dollars at auction and have drawn thieves and vandals. In 2018, a number of works including one near a former center for migrants that depicted a child spray-painting wallpaper over a swastika were discovered in Paris.Banksy has also created numerous artworks in the West Bank and Gaza Strip over the years, including one depicting a girl conducting a body search on an Israeli soldier, another showing a dove wearing a flak jacket, and a masked protester hurling a bouquet of flowers. He designed the Walled Off Hotel guesthouse in Bethlehem, which closed in October 2023.Last summer, Banksy captured Londons attention with an animal-themed collection, which concluded with a mural of a gorilla appearing to hold up the entrance gate to London Zoo.For nine days straight, Banksy-created creatures from a mountain goat perched on a building buttress to piranhas circling a police guard post to a rhinoceros mounting a car showed up in unlikely locations around the city. Charlotte officials under fire after man with long criminal history kills Ukrainian woman on train
Undated photo released by Banksy of the new artwork by the artist which portrays a judge beating a protester with a gavel at the Royal Courts of Justice in London. (Banksy via AP)2025-09-08T20:00:36Z CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) Officials in Charlotte, North Carolina, faced sharp criticism for failing to keep a man with a history of mental illness, arrests and erratic behavior off the streets before he fatally stabbed a young Ukrainian refugee on a commuter train last month, a killing that critics say could have been prevented.Police say 23-year-old Iryna Zarutska, who fled the war in Ukraine only to be killed in an apparently random attack on Aug. 22, was stabbed by a man with a long record of criminal charges and psychiatric crises. The suspect, 34-year-old Decarlos Brown Jr., had served time in prison, been briefly committed for schizophrenia and was arrested earlier this year after repeatedly calling 911 from a hospital. The attack, captured in a newly released video, has drawn condemnation of local officials and emerged as a flashpoint in the debate over whether cities like Charlotte are adequately addressing violent crime, mental illness and transit safety. Zarutska had come to the United States to escape Russias invasion, relatives wrote in a GoFundMe post, describing her as determined to build a safer life. Video released Friday shows Zarutska sitting on the light-rail train as Brown takes a seat directly behind her. Minutes later, without any apparent interaction, he pulls out a pocketknife, stands and slashes her in the neck, investigators said. Passengers screamed and scattered as she collapsed. Stay up to date with the latest U.S. news by signing up to our WhatsApp channel. Brown was arrested at the scene and charged with first-degree murder. Court records show he had cycled through the criminal justice system for more than a decade, with 14 prior cases in Mecklenburg County, including serving five years for robbery with a dangerous weapon. His mother told local television she sought an involuntary psychiatric commitment earlier this year after he became violent at home. Doctors diagnosed him with schizophrenia. In January, he was arrested again after repeatedly calling 911 from a hospital, claiming people were trying to control him. A judge released him without bail. President Donald Trump on Monday sent his love to the victims family and called the suspect a madman while speaking at the Museum of the Bible in Washington. They are evil people. We have to be able to handle that. If we dont handle that, we dont have a country, Trump said.He later questioned on Truth Social why Brown was freed and riding the train. Criminals like this need to be LOCKED UP, Trump wrote. Several Republicans and Trump allies say the attack shows that large cities and governors are failing to protect their residents and justifies the presidents federal takeover of Washington and his plans to replicate that effort in other places.Brown, who spent five years in prison after pleading guilty to robbery with a dangerous weapon, was arrested earlier this year when officers were called to a Charlotte hospital for a welfare check. He told officers that he believed someone gave him man-made material that controlled when he ate, walked and talked, according to police records. Brown became upset after officers told him there was nothing further they could do. Court records also show that Brown faced charges ranging from making threats and shoplifting to felony larceny dating back to 2011, although some of those charges appear to have been dismissed.A message seeking comment was left Monday with the attorney representing him on the murder charge.U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy blamed Charlotte officials, including the citys Democratic mayor, for allowing Brown to be on the streets. This monster had a track record longer than a CVS receipt, including prison time for robbery with a dangerous weapon, breaking and entering, and larceny, Duffy wrote on X Sunday. By failing to properly punish him, Charlotte failed Iryna Zarutska and North Carolinians.Top Republican lawmakers in North Carolinas state legislature echoed the criticism. This is the cost of soft-on-crime leadership, Republican House Speaker Destin Hall wrote on social media. Anyone who puts criminals before victims has no business in public office. Random attacks and violence in U.S. cities have taken on increasing significance nationally this year, colliding with the politics of crime and immigration as the Trump administration plans to ramp up a greater federal role on city streets.Trump has threatened to deploy the National Guard to several Democratic-led cities including Chicago, Baltimore and San Francisco to fight what he says is runaway crime. But data shows most violent crime in those places and around the country has declined in recent years. Those same trends have largely held true in Charlotte, where the rates of homicides, robberies, aggravated assault and burglary all decreased between 2020 and 2024 but auto thefts rose significantly, according to AH Datalytics, which tracks crime using local law enforcement data for its Real-Time Crime Index. In 2024, though, homicides in Charlotte did spike by nearly 20% over the previous year, but that number has dropped again during the first six months of this year, according to the data. Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles called Zarutskas killing a senseless and tragic loss.Like so many of you, Im heartbroken and Ive been thinking hard about what safety really looks like in our city, she posted on X after authorities released footage of the attack. ___Brumfield reported from Cockeysville, Maryland. Associated Press reporters John Seewer in Toledo, Ohio; Christopher L. Keller in Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Adriana Gomez Licon in Fort Lauderdale, Florida; contributed.

New Chicago immigration campaign prompts confusion as city braces for federal intervention
A person talks to a masked guard at the entrance of an immigration processing center Monday, Sept. 8, 2025, in Broadview, Ill., a suburb of Chicago. (AP Photo/Carolyn Kaster)2025-09-08T21:28:16Z CHICAGO (AP) The Department of Homeland Security trumpeted the start of a new immigration operation Monday in Chicago, stirring up fresh confusion and anxiety as the city remained on alert for a federal intervention President Donald Trump has touted for days.Blasting so-called sanctuary laws in Chicago and Illinois, the latest effort targets people without legal permission to live in the U.S. who have criminal records. Like other Trump administration plans, it was stamped with a splashy name, Operation Midway Blitz, and circulated on social media with the mugshots of 11 foreign-born men it said should be deported. This ICE operation will target the criminal illegal aliens who flocked to Chicago and Illinois because they knew Governor (JB) Pritzker and his sanctuary policies would protect them and allow them to roam free on American streets, said a statement from DHS. Pritzker, who has been locked in a back-and-forth with Trump for days, criticized the move. He and Mayor Brandon Johnson have defended the state and citys extensive sanctuary laws which bar coordination between local police and immigration agents. Theyve accused the Trump administration of using scare tactics, particularly with Latino residents in the nations third-largest city. Once again, this isnt about fighting crime. That requires support and coordination yet weve experienced nothing like that over the past several weeks, Pritzker said in a statement. Instead of taking steps to work with us on public safety, the Trump administrations focused on scaring Illinoisians. Stay up to date with the latest U.S. news by signing up to our WhatsApp channel. Chicago has been bracing for an influx of immigration agents and possibly the National Guard for two weeks. Numerous protests have cropped up downtown, outside a suburban military base DHS plans to use and at an immigration processing center thats expected to be a hub of activity. Trump deployed the National Guard to Los Angeles over the summer and as part of his unprecedented law enforcement takeover in Washington, D.C., where he has direct legal control. For the federal intervention in Los Angeles, a judge deemed the National Guard deployment illegal, but the Trump administration got a victory related to immigration enforcement there when the U.S. Supreme Court lifted a restraining order barring agents there from stopping people solely based on their race, language, job or location. U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois, the Senates No. 2 Democrat, rejected the latest operation announced in Chicago These actions dont make us safer, he said in a statement. They are a waste of money, stoke fear, and represent another failed attempt at a distraction. It remained unclear what role Mondays announced program would play in a Chicago surge.Adding to the confusion was a handful of immigration arrests over the weekend in Chicago, which galvanized the citys vocal activist network and worries that it was the start of something bigger. This is about terrorizing our communities, said Chicago City Council member Jeyl Gutirrez said. But we will not be intimidated. She and immigrant rights activists said that five people arrested were beloved community members. Some were on their way to work when arrested Sunday. Another works as a flower vendor. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement confirmed four arrests but gave sparse information, noting criminal histories with previous arrests and one conviction for driving under the influence.ICE has always operated in Chicago, the agency said in a statement. We will continue our law enforcement and public safety mission, undeterred, as we surge ICE resources in the city in coordination with our federal partners.DHS said the operation announced Monday would be in honor of Katie Abram, one of two Illinois women killed in a January fatal car crash. A grand jury indicted a 29-year-old man in the hit-and-run. The Guatemalan national also faces federal false identification crimes. ___Associated Press writer Christine Fernando contributed to this report.

To text with a trained helper, text SAVE to 741741.Judge Janis Sammartino sentenced Michael James Pratt, the owner and operator of the GirlsDoPorn sex trafficking ring, to 27 years in federal prison on Monday.Pratt masterminded GirlsDoPorn until 2019, when he and multiple of his co-conspirators were charged with federal counts of sex trafficking by force, fraud and coercion. His victims number in the hundreds, according to the FBI and court documents. Its quite clear that without you none of this would have occurred," Judge Sammartino said prior to issuing his sentence. The women here today and hundreds of others would not have been victimized except for your direction... You led the conspiracy, you supervised it, you managed it.In addition to the 27 years, the judge ordered 10 years of supervision. Prosecutors has asked the court for 22 years. Judge Sammartino also forbade Pratt from contacting any victims, ordered that he would not be allowed to consume adult material or go to a store that primarily sells it, along with several more restrictions and provisions. In federal court on Monday in San Diego, Pratt gave a short apology before the court before victims started giving statements. "It was never my intention to hurt anybody," he said, adding that he would never have come to this country to make a website. One victim said she never feels safe, never feels like her family is safe, and worries for her school-aged son. Your crimes were never a single mistake, Michael. It was a pattern, she said. What you did was not a fleeting act. It was a lasting scar. Another said her children had their photos stolen from social media and reposted with links to this video. Are you a victim of GirlsDoPorn? I would love to hear from you. Otherwise, send me an email at sam@404media.co.Another victim said she has lived a double life for a decade, outwardly holding it together while inwardly drowning, she said. She lost her marriage, friendships, and a sense of control over her own life, she said. She asked the judge for the maximum possible sentence. The scariest part is the internet doesnt forget and every day Im reminded of the pieces of me that were stolen, another said. Justice on paper doesnt undo what was done to me.He turned my pain into profit, my life into currency, said another victim, before turning to Pratt directly, sitting to her right. I want you to look at me, she said to him. Im not your victim. Im your reckoning. She said she altered her face to not be recognized. My reflection may be different, but the girl you broke still lives inside of me. She told Pratt to look around the courtroom as the survivors gathered there. You thought we would break. Instead we linked arms.Kristy Althaus, a victim who was targeted by Pratt when she was a senior in high school and had her life upended as she was doxed online after her Miss Teen Colorado pageant victory brought her intense media scrutiny, said in her statement she is disgusted by Pratt. My interaction with you wasnt hours or days or months, it was years of terrorism, she said. Althaus is suing Pornhub and its parent company Aylo for hosting the videos and partnering with GirlsDoPorn.Ahead of Sentencing, GirlsDoPorn Ringleader Michael Pratt Attempts to Seem ReformedIn sentencing memos and exhibits, Pratts attorney paints of picture that points at Pratts abusive father, his ADHD, his co-conspirators, the entire pornography industry, and the victims themselves.404 MediaSamantha ColeSeveral mentioned being trapped in the hotel rooms, being forced to reshoot the videos when they cried out or bled. It didnt take long for me to realize the quickest way out of that room was to do and say whatever they wanted, one said, claiming Pratt controlled the situation and what they did and said on camera, including re-doing testimonials. I have no doubt Pratts cutting room floor is filled with some of the most gut wrenching footage imaginable.I dont think you expected to see me again, one said directly to Pratt. But now the tables have turned... Now what used to be my face all over the media is now yours. He fueled it, he enjoyed it and he would do it again if he had the chance, another said. She asked the judge for permission to address Pratt directly, then turned sharply to face him. Hey pedophile, she said. You chose to get me a birthday cake so the whole world would know I would be the next youngest victim.Another victim said she considered suicide. There are nights I didnt think I would survive the pain. I felt so numb and so powerless. I thought the only solution was to take my own life. Several victims mentioned attempting suicide over the years. A different victim said during her testimony that 15 women that they know of have died since filming with GirlsDoPorn. One said after falling victim to Pratts enterprise, she turned to alcohol and heroin. I have died three times and have been brought back to life, she said. Her roommates in college blackmailed and harassed her using the videos. She said she plans to never marry or have children, and cant be intimate physically with anyone, and never plans to be again. This wasnt just a video. This was my body and identity ... you destroyed years I can never get back. But that Im here speaking proves you will never win. [...] You ran. I didnt. We had to face the world every day.The mother of one of Pratts now-deceased victims stood before the judge. The mother had only just learned about GirlsDoPorn, she said, and her daughters involvement, in May. Her daughter, Isabelle, started becoming distant from family and friends in late 2017 and began to disappear, becoming withdrawn and quiet. Her mother said she didnt understand why at the time. As a mother I love my child no matter what, no matter where, she said, but she said she thinks shame kept her daughter from confiding in anyone. Isabelle died by overdose in 2023. I can still hear her speaking to me, her mother said. Her mother said she still hears her daughters voice. [She says,] I was tortured, lied to, hunted after. Earth was hard and I miss you.She Turned Ghost White: How a Ragtag Group of Friends Tracked Down a Sex Trafficking RingleaderMichael Pratt hid a massive sex trafficking ring in plain sight on PornHub. On the run from the FBI, an unexpected crew of ex-military, ex-intelligence officers and a lawyer tracked him down using his love of rare sneakers and crypto. For the first time, the group tells their story.404 MediaSamantha ColeMany more women nearly 40, for more than four hours spoke before the judge on Monday. Their stories were all similar and all horrific, recounting sexual assault, rape and lies by Pratts associates, isolation and rejection from their families, torment that extended to their loved ones, trauma that causes them to feel like theyre never safe, night terrors, futures stolen and dreams crushed, relationships destroyed, and online harassment that still continues to this day. You made me give up on my life, and now I just exist, one said.In the final statement of the day, read by a prosecutor, the victim said she suffered a PTSD-related seizure when she landed in San Diego. On the day her GirlsDoPorn video was shot nine years ago, after being picked up at the airport by a woman representing the organization and taken to a hotel, she was brutally raped for nearly nine hours.GirlsDoPorn videos were all over the internet, massively popular in part because of the women Pratt and his team primarily targeted: usually college-aged, completely inexperienced in the porn industry, and newly legal adults. In at least one case, a woman blew out the candles on a birthday cake Pratt bought her so he could demonstrate to the camera shed just turned 18, she said. Pratt and his co-conspirators lied to the women they recruited, telling them they would just be modeling." Pratt would fly the women to San Diego where shoots happened in hotel rooms. Once in the rooms, many of the women reported the doors were locked, they were assaulted before and during the video shoots, and were told their return flights home would be canceled if they didnt go through with hours of painful sexual assault.Pratt and the GirlsDoPorn operators promised the women that the videos wouldnt be seen by anyone except private collectors in Australia and New Zealand. Instead, Pratt and his colleagues posted the videos to massive porn tube sites including Pornhub, where GirlsDoPorn videos received millions of views and reached the families, friends, and schoolmates of the women in them. Many of the women were ostracized from their communities, pushed out of the job market, lost relationships, and some said they considered self-harm and suicide. Many women said GirlsDoPorn operatives also rushed them through signing consent forms and legally-dense contracts and some claim they were plied with alcohol and drugs including marijuana and Xanax before being given a contract. The contracts didnt even mention GirlsDoPorn by name, a conscious choice by the operators; GirlsDoPorn was already widely known by the time a lot of them were recruited. Pratt continued operating GirlsDoPorn after 22 women sued him for $12 million in a case that went to trial in June 2019. The women won that case in 2020.Right up until the last minute before the operation was federally indicted, the main actor in the videos, Andre Garcia, was still recruiting, as Pratts childhood friend and business partner Matthew Wolfe testified in October 2019. Pratt was still operating it from on the lam after fleeing the US in mid-2019, after the civil case went to trial and right before the federal sex trafficking charges came down.Pratt was on the FBIs Most Wanted list for years. Private investigators involved in the case tracked Pratt down in Spain in 2022. He was arrested by Spanish authorities in December 2022 and extradited to the US, where hes been in custody since. After initially pleading not guilty in March 2024, Pratt flipped his plea to guilty in June 2025.Michael James Pratt, you had the power to control the narrative. For many years, you have tried to silence us, but today, it is our turn to set this record straight, one of the victims said before the court on Monday. You are evil, you are a predator, you are a rapist, and this is who you are. Your ego is too big to believe you would ever get caught, but karma comes around and it will haunt you now the book of your life is in its final chapter: a miserable one. I will continue to stand with my head high, prosper and live with gratitude, as your time is spent behind bars. It is your turn now to suffer, as we lock you away from all the beauty this world has to offer.Almost all of Pratts co-conspirators have already been sentenced. Garcia was sentenced to 20 years in prison on June 14, 2021; Theodore Gyi, the primary cameraman for the ring, was sentenced to four years on November 9, 2022 and ordered to pay victims $100,000; Wolfe was sentenced to 14 years on March 20, 2024; Valorie Moser, the operations office manager who recruited women and repeated the lie about DVD-exclusive video releases, is set for sentencing on September 12, 2025 and faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
