APNEWS.COMTrump administration renews push to fire Fed governor Lisa Cook ahead of key voteFederal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, left, talks with Board of Governors member Lisa Cook, right, during an open meeting of the Board of Governors at the Federal Reserve, June 25, 2025, in Washington. (AP Photo/Mark Schiefelbein, File)2025-09-14T19:20:42Z President Donald Trumps administration renewed its request Sunday for a federal appeals court to let him fire Lisa Cook from the Federal Reserves board of governors, a move the president is seeking ahead of the central banks vote on interest rates. The Trump administration filed a response just ahead of a 3 p.m. Eastern deadline Sunday to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, arguing that Cooks legal arguments for why she should stay on the job were meritless. Lawyers for Cook argued in a Saturday filing that the Trump administration has not shown sufficient cause to fire her, and stressed the risks to the economy and country if the president were allowed to fire a Fed governor without proper cause.Sundays filing is the latest step in an unprecedented effort by the White House to shape the historically independent Fed. Cooks firing marks the first time in the central banks 112-year history that a president has tried to fire a governor. The public and the executive share an interest in ensuring the integrity of the Federal Reserve, Trumps lawyers argued in Sundays filing. And that requires respecting the presidents statutory authority to remove governors for cause when such cause arises. Bill Pulte, a Trump appointee to the agency that regulates mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, has accused Cook of signing separate documents in which she allegedly said that both the Atlanta property and a home in Ann Arbor, Michigan, also purchased in June 2021, were both primary residences. Pulte submitted a criminal referral to the Justice Department, which has opened an investigation. Trump relied on those allegations to fire Cook for cause.Cook, the first Black woman to serve as a Fed governor, referred to the condominium as a vacation home in a loan estimate, a characterization that could undermine claims by the Trump administration that she committed mortgage fraud. Documents obtained by The Associated Press also showed that on a second form submitted by Cook to gain a security clearance, she described the property as a second home. Cook sued the Trump administration to block her firing and a federal judge ruled Tuesday that the removal was illegal and reinstated her to the Feds board. The administration appealed and asked for an emergency ruling just before the Fed is set to meet this week and decide whether to reduce its key interest rate. Most economists expect they will cut the rate by a quarter point. WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMTrumps plummeting popularity in this critical county may foreshadow a good midterms for DemocratsDonald Trumps popularity is plummeting in a county considered a key indicator of national trends. A recent survey from Democratic firm Upswing Research & Strategy found that only 42% of likely voters in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, view Trump favorably, compared to 53% who view him unfavorably, Politico reported. Related Lawmaker leaves GOP for Democratic party after he got villainized for supporting LGBTQ+ people Numbers are sinking compared to a year ago, when a survey from the same group found that 50 percent of likely Bucks County voters had an unfavorable view of Trump and 45 percent viewed him favorably. Its clear that there is some backlash against Trump and MAGA Republicans generally, Ethan Smith, founding partner at Upswing Research & Strategy, told the publication. The survey also shows that were probably entering a period of Democratic enthusiasm. We can tell just based on response rates that Democrats are really eager to participate in the election. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Trump won Bucks County by less than one percent in the 2024 presidential election. Bucks County has also been a hotbed of anti-LGBTQ+ controversy over the past several years. In 2022, the ACLU filed a 72-page complaint accusing Bucks Countys Central Bucks School District of fostering an anti-LBGTQ+ environment. The previous year, Pennridge School District in Bucks County banned books on gender identity from elementary school libraries. In 2024, families filed a civil rights complaint accusing the district of creating a hostile environment for LGBTQ+ students and students of color. Nevertheless, Bucks Countys increasing lean away from Trump could spell good news for Democrats come midterms. Other analysts have found similar indicators in other areas of the country. CNN chief data analyst Harry Enten recently explained that when the same party wins in both New Jersey and Virginia gubernatorial races, that party also wins the House six out of seven times. And right now, the Democratic candidates in both states are leading by significant margins.Enten said that these margins should be a flashing red siren warning sign for Republicans.Enten also spoke about other elections taking place around the country and said that signal after signal after signal shows that when people are voting, Democrats are doing well.Enten hasalso been vocalabout the dismal approval ratings of the president himself, saying in July that he was at a term-two low.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Comments 0 Shares 2 Views 0 Reviews

APNEWS.COMFox News Brian Kilmeade apologizes for saying mentally ill homeless people should be executedFox & Friends host Brian Kilmeade attends the 79th annual Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner, Oct. 17, 2024, in New York. (AP Photo/Ted Shaffrey, File)2025-09-14T18:21:37Z Fox News Channel host Brian Kilmeade apologized on Sunday for advocating for the execution of mentally ill homeless people in a discussion on the network last week, saying his remark was extremely callous.Kilmeades initial comment came on a Fox & Friends episode Wednesday and began getting widespread circulation online over the weekend. Kilmeade, a host of the morning show, was talking with co-hosts Lawrence Jones and Ainsley Earhardt about the Aug. 22 stabbing murder of Iryna Zarutska on a light rail train in Charlotte, North Carolina.A homeless and mentally ill man, Decarlos Brown Jr., was arrested for murder, and the case received extensive attention on Fox following the release of a security video of the stabbing.Jones was talking on Fox & Friends on Wednesday about public money spent on trying to help homeless people and suggested that those who didnt accept services offered to them should be jailed. Or involuntary lethal injection, or something, Kilmeade said. Just kill em.Earhardt interjected, Why did it have to get to this point? Kilmeade replied, I will say this, were not voting for the right people.During an appearance on the Fox & Friends weekend show Sunday, Kilmeade said that I wrongly said they should get lethal injection. I apologize for that extremely callous remark. I am obviously aware that not all mentally ill, homeless people act as the perpetrator did in North Carolina and that so many homeless people deserve our empathy and compassion. An advocate for homeless people said Sunday that Kilmeades remark had been completely devoid of all humanity. Christine Quinn, president and CEO of Win, a provider of shelter and services for homeless children in New York City, invited Kilmeade to volunteer in one of the organizations shelters. Kilmeades initial remark came hours before the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk in Utah. An MSNBC analyst, Matthew Dowd, was fired for saying on the air that afternoon that hateful rhetoric can lead to hateful actions.___David Bauder writes about the intersection of media and entertainment for the AP.
