SPORTS.YAHOO.COMCincinnati Reds blast New York Mets 7-2 behind Nick LodoloNEW YORK, NEW YORK - MAY 25: Nick Lodolo #40 of the Cincinnati Reds pitches during the third inning against the New York Mets at Citi Field on May 25, 2026 in the Queens borough of New York City. (Photo by Ishika Samant/Getty Images) | Getty Images The Cincinnati Reds looked perfectly miserable against New York Mets rookie Nolan McLean, at least in the Top of the 1st inning in the series opener at Citi Field. McLean breezed through the top of the Reds lineup by striking out the side to begin, with none of Blake Dunn, Elly De La Cruz, or JJ Bleday looking comfortable at all in the batter’s box.Perhaps the Reds just needed to shake off some quick rust after being idle for three of the previous four days. Whatever it was, they flipped the switch shortly thereafter and eventually blasted the Mets prized rookie and the rest of their roster in a 7-2 win to begin their road trip.Bleday later homered off McLean, Tyler Stephenson did, too, and that was more than enough to back the best start of Nick Lodolo’s blister-delayed 2026 season. The latter fired 6.0 IP of 6 H, ER, 0 BB, 7 K ball on 98 pitches, keeping New York’s offense completely off the board until a solo homer by Marcus Semien in the Bottom of the 6th.For that, Lodolo takes home this game’s Joe Nuxhall Memorial Honorary Star of the Game award, something I certainly hope he does again another two-dozen times before the season’s end. While Dunn and Elly struggled (0 for 9, 5 K) atop the order, it was the middle-back of the lineup that carried the offense on the day. Bleday homered, Eugenio Suarez went 2 for 3 with a walk, a double, and 2 runs scored, Nate Lowe walked twice, poked a soft double down the RF line, and scored, and Spencer Steer came up large with a key hit and drove in 3 on the day. That, of course, came before Stephenson in a Reds lineup that increasingly looks potent again with Ke’Bryan Hayes on the IL and TJ Friedl on the back of milk cartons all over the tri-state area.It was an all-around excellent win, the Reds feasting on the Mets on a day when so much of Cincinnati spends feasting on metts. And the Reds now get to hand the ball to Chase Burns tomorrow in the second game of the series. That will commence at 7:10 PM ET, with the Reds with the serious upper-hand on paper.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 50 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMChiefs' 2026 offense has too many 'ifs' for Patrick MahomesChiefs' 2026 offense has too many 'ifs' for Patrick Mahomes originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Kansas City Chiefs' offense, with Patrick Mahomes at the helm, is always going to be good enough to win games. But as we turn to 2026, there is a thought that Patrick's supporting cast isn't what it once was, and in fact, some think the Chiefs should have added a veteran receiver to the room this offseason. As things stand, Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy, Kenneth Walker, and Travis Kelce are the top weapons for Mahomes. Is that enough? Patrick does elevate those around him, so maybe it is.For Fox Sports' Ralph Vacchiano, he has the Chiefs' supporting cast ranked as the 13th-best in football."Rashee Rice, if he stays healthy and out of trouble — he was sentenced to 30 days in jail Tuesday — can be a No. 1 receiver," Vacchiano wrote. "Xavier Worthy has uncommon speed, though he hasn’t had the expected production yet. RB Kenneth Walker III is a huge upgrade to what the Chiefs have had in recent years, though it remains to be seen how Reid uses him. "And then there’s TE Travis Kelce, back for another season at age 36. Either Rice or Walker might make more sense as the focal point of Reid’s scheme this year."MORE:Bills' Josh Allen will 'break every record' if 1 thing happensDo Chiefs have enough firepower? You can make that case. I do feel like the addition of Walker will help tremendously, as the Chiefs will finally have a running back that defenses have to plan for.Last season, defenses would sit back in coverage because there was no threat from Isiah Pacheco or Kareem Hunt -- Walker is a threat on every play. So, he can help dictate the coverage, which might make it easier for the receivers to get open. Of course, it all centers on how healthy Patrick is in 2026. Still on track for a Week 1 return, it is all good vibes in Kansas City right now.But I'd imagine they'd be even better if the weaponry at Mahomes' disposal was a little better.More NFL news:Rams named as potential landing spot for Super Bowl-winning WRTy Simpson reveals 'big advantage' being drafted to RamsAnalyst offers brutal coaching reality for Buccaneers' Todd Bowles in 2026Commanders get horrible ranking that greatly impacts Jayden DanielsChargers' Justin Herbert set to benefit from 'mad scientist' in 20260 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 50 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMHouston Rockets 2025-26 player grades: Jeff Green18-year NBA veteran Jeff Green, also known as Uncle Jeff, just finished up his third full season with the Rockets after winning an NBA title with the Denver Nuggets in 2023. A 16.9 point per game scorer at his peak, Green has had lots of success on plenty of different teams, having played for 11 franchises throughout his career. At age 39, the Georgetown alum didn't have a ton to offer Houston on the court, averaging 2.2 points, 0.8 rebounds and 0.3 assists in 30 appearances, averaging 5.8 minutes per game. While Green's 3-point percentage left a bit to be desired (27.3%), he wasn't expected to be much of a contributor on the perimeter. Although Green's player grade may seem generously high, this takes the intangibles into account. Year after year, the Rockets have continued to bring back Green for his locker room impact despite his declining play. Unfortunately for Houston, Green's presence couldn't solve a rift within the team that took place, which questioned Kevin Durant's activity on the internet.Overall grade: C+This article originally appeared on Rockets Wire: Rockets 2025-26 player grades: Jeff Green0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 50 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMHave Broncos done enough to replace their biggest offseason loss?Have Broncos done enough to replace their biggest offseason loss? originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Denver Broncos are on a mission to win the Super Bowl this coming season. That much has been made clear. It's not a team on the rise or one that is flying under the radar. This Broncos squad feels it could have won it all last year and is preparing to get there this year. The team's front office has been preparing for this for some time. A plethora of contract extensions were handed out during the 2025 season to the likes of Courtland Sutton, Zach Allen, Nik Bonitto, Luke Wattenberg, Wil Lutz and Malcolm Roach. Following the season, the Broncos re-signed just about every free agent (unrestricted, restricted, exclusive rights) that it had on the books. However, since last season, it seemed that defensive lineman John Franklin-Myers would be the one piece the team wouldn't try too hard to keep, mostly due to cost. This offseason, the Tennessee Titans handed Franklin-Myers a three-year, $63 million deal, worth up to $21 million annually. That was too rich for the Broncos' blood, apparently. Assessing how the Broncos have replaced John Franklin-MyersThe Broncos are at least two deep at just about every position on the field. However, the spot once occupied by Franklin-Myers is going to be one of this season's biggest question marks. The team used its first pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, which didn't come until round three, to select Tyler Onyedim out of Texas A&M.Onyedim will join established veteran Eyioma Uwazurike, his former college teammate at Iowa State and second-year player Sai'vion Jones in training camp to see who will assume Franklin-Myers' former role. It could easily be a committee approach. Bill Barnwell of ESPN, while examining each AFC teams' best and worst moves of the offseason, feels the Broncos have not done enough to fill the hole left by Franklin-Myers. Here were his thoughts on the situation:"The Broncos had a championship-caliber defense last season, and Franklin- Myers was one of the many players who helped Denver come within a quarterback injury of potentially making it to the Super Bowl. After being salary-dumped on the Broncos in 2024, Franklin- Myers put together two excellent seasons in Denver, racking up 14.5 sacks and 33 knockdowns for the Broncos. It wasn't a surprise that Franklin-Myers left for former coach Robert Saleh's Titans this offseason, especially after Tennessee cleared out a space in the lineup by trading T'Vondre Sweat. But the Broncos haven't done much to replace the veteran, as their only addition so far was third-round pick Tyler Onyedim. There's nothing wrong with asking Onyedim, second-year lineman Sai'vion Jones and 28-year-old Eyioma Uwazurike to take on some of Franklin-Myers' workload, but this is a team with championship aspirations given the Jaylen Waddle trade . General manager George Paton probably was trying to protect the compensatory picks the Broncos earned for losing Franklin-Myers and P.J. Locke in free agency, but with that formula now locked, it's a surprise that Denver wasn't more aggressive in pursuing a veteran such as Calais Campbell, who signed with the Ravens, to help become part of the defensive line rotation."This is something the Broncos will have to closely monitor this summer as they make their way through camp and the preseason slate. However, if the trio of Jones, Uwazurike and Onyedim isn't enough, the team could have to look outside the organization at a thin veteran free-agent market for a short-term answer. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMGregg Popovich tore into Spurs, lit fire under them after Game 3, 'That's not how we play basketball'Gregg Popovich has been around the San Antonio Spurs all season, talking to players at practices, offering advice, and being the wise elder statesman that he is.However, he is no longer the coach, so he had not entered the team's locker room postgame all season long... until after Game 3. That ugly loss changed things and Popovich lit a fire under the team, De'Aaron Fox told the Showtime crew in NBC after the Spurs bounced back in Game 3. “Pop's been around throughout the course of the season, but that was the first time he walked into the locker room. And it was like, 'Nah, that BS. That's not how we play basketball.' And obviously he had some choice words for us. That was the first time all season he came into the locker room right after the game and told us how he felt — and everybody felt that. Mitch (Johnson, Spurs coach), B-Wright (Brian Wright, Spurs GM) was in there, all the players down to the staff. And that was the first time I seen that. Everybody was in there, trainers, everybody’s in there. We close the doors, we don’t let anybody know what’s going on in there. We open that door, we see Pop come in, and it’s like, ‘Awwww.'”Whatever Popovich said worked. Well, that along with a monster game from Victor Wembanyama plus some really smart defensive adjustments. The Spurs and Thunder are tied 2-2, but it feels like San Antonio has the momentum as the series shifts back to Oklahoma City for a critical Game 5 on Tuesday night, which tips off at 8:30 p.m. ET and you can watch on NBC or stream on Peacock.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 51 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMCubs are suddenly in danger of wasting their incredible start to the seasonCubs are suddenly in danger of wasting their incredible start to the season originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. For nearly two months, the Chicago Cubs looked like one of baseball’s most complete teams. Two separate 10-game winning streaks had them threatening to run away with the NL Central and positioned them as a legitimate National League contender early in the 2026 season. Now, the conversation around the Cubs has changed dramatically. Chicago’s 2-1 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday extended the club’s losing streak to nine games, continuing one of the most stunning collapses in baseball this season. The Cubs have now dropped 13 of their last 15 games, falling from division frontrunner to third place in an NL Central where every team entered Memorial Day above .500.What makes the skid even more alarming is the historical company Chicago has joined. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the Cubs became just the second team in the expansion era to record multiple 10-game winning streaks and a separate nine-game losing streak in the same season, joining the 2017 Los Angeles Dodgers. That statistic alone captures how wildly inconsistent Craig Counsell’s team has become over the last several weeks. The Cubs offense has completely disappeared at the worst possible timeThe biggest issue during Chicago’s collapse has been an offense that suddenly looks nothing like the explosive lineup that dominated earlier in the season. The Cubs have scored two runs or fewer in nine of their last 15 games, including Monday’s loss at PNC Park. Michael Busch provided Chicago’s only offense with a solo home run in the fifth inning, while the rest of the lineup once again struggled to deliver in key moments. Chicago finished with just six hits, went 0-for-2 with runners in scoring position and stranded seven runners on base.Even more concerning was how lifeless the offense looked late against Pittsburgh’s bullpen. Pirates rookie Wilber Dotel and closer Gregory Soto retired the final 10 Cubs hitters in order to close out the game. Counsell did everything he could in the ninth inning, sending right-handed hitters Nico Hoerner, Seiya Suzuki and Carson Kelly up against the hard-throwing left-handed Soto. It did not matter.Hoerner grounded out. Suzuki struck out looking on a borderline full-count slider that clipped the bottom of the zone after review. Kelly grounded out to second to officially seal Chicago’s ninth straight defeat. After the game, Counsell did not sugarcoat the situation.“We’ve got to swing the bats better,” Counsell said. “We’ve got to pitch better. We need more guys contributing to good stuff.”Ben Brown deserved a better outcome againOne of the more frustrating parts of Chicago’s losing streak is that the pitching has not completely fallen apart. Ben Brown was excellent once again Monday, allowing just one run on four hits across six innings while striking out seven. His ERA dropped to an impressive 2.01, but the Cubs still found a way to lose.Instead, the turning point came in the seventh inning when Pirates catcher Henry Davis crushed a Trent Thornton cutter 427 feet over the left-field wall for the go-ahead homer. That was enough because Chicago’s offense never responded. The Cubs also wasted several strong defensive moments from Pittsburgh first baseman Spencer Horwitz, who repeatedly robbed Pete Crow-Armstrong of hard-hit balls throughout the afternoon.Meanwhile, Pittsburgh continues gaining confidence behind young contributors like Dotel, who earned the first win of his MLB career with three scoreless innings out of the bullpen. The rookie attacked Chicago hitters with a fearless approach that Pirates catcher Henry Davis praised after the game. For the Cubs, though, the focus is entirely on stopping a spiral that is beginning to define their season.MORE: Paul Skenes suddenly looks human again as Pirates’ problems keep growingWhat once looked like a runaway division title is becoming a fight just to surviveJust a few weeks ago, the Cubs looked capable of creating separation in the NL Central. Now they are only four games ahead of the last-place Pirates and suddenly look vulnerable in one of baseball’s deepest divisions. The timing could not be worse. Chicago just finished a disastrous homestand where it was swept by the Milwaukee Brewers and lost three more games to the Houston Astros before heading to Pittsburgh and continuing the slide. The Cubs are still above .500 at 29-25, so this is not a season-ending collapse yet. But the longer the losing streak continues, the harder it becomes to ignore the mounting pressure around a team that entered the season expecting to contend. The most alarming part is that there does not appear to be one simple fix. The offense is inconsistent. Key hitters are slumping. Good pitching performances are being wasted. And a team that once played with swagger now looks tight late in games. That is how promising seasons suddenly unravel in baseball.More MLB news:Paul Skenes suddenly looks human again as Pirates’ problems keep growingCardinals may have accidentally created the perfect baseball atmosphereJames Wood delivered one of baseball’s rarest moments in winNick Morabito promotion signals Mets are thinking differentlyMatthew Liberatore is still chasing the role Cardinals have waited years to see0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 51 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COM3 Vikings Trade Candidates to Boost the DefenseScott Galvin-Imagn ImagesThe Minnesota Vikings’ defense was the backbone of the team, keeping the 2025 Vikings competitive while the offense struggled all season. There have been some changes to the unit this offseason, and there could be room for one more move. Here are three Vikings trade candidates to boost the defense ahead of the 2026 season.Defensive Depth Could Become Minnesota’s Trade FocusI recently wrote about Pro Football Focus’s selection of Blake Cashman as a potential trade candidate. The three players named here appear in the same article and are players the Vikings should be interested in if they want to improve their team. Minnesota isn’t blessed with a ton of salary cap space, but that can be worked around if you want it to. If the Vikings really want to be competitive in a tough division, here are three defensive players who can make a difference.Ronnie Hickman (S), Cleveland BrownsOct 19, 2025; Cleveland, Ohio, USA; Cleveland Browns safety Ronnie Hickman Jr. (33) celebrates after intercepting a pass during the second half against the Miami Dolphins at Huntington Bank Field. Mandatory Credit: Ken Blaze-Imagn ImagesSafety was one of the big areas of concern in Minnesota coming into the offseason, and there hasn’t been much done to alleviate those concerns other than drafting Jakobe Thomas in the third round of this year’s draft. Adding a player like Cleveland’s Ronnie Hickman would give the team a solid starter who thrives on coverage, and at a good age to be a long-term solution. Here is what PFF says about Hickman and his trade potential.Although the Browns were widely lauded for assembling one of the league’s best draft classes, their rookie crop might have ripple effects on someone like Hickman. The 24-year-old has been sneakily good since being an undrafted free agent out of Ohio State, producing at least a 70.6 overall PFF grade in every year. In 2025 specifically, Hickman thrived in coverage with a 75.3 PFF coverage mark — the 10th-best among qualified safeties — while averaging a sound 29.0 snaps per reception. After Cleveland drafted Emmanuel McNeil-Warren in the second round, it suggests that either Hickman or Grant Delpit isn’t in the team’s long-term future. Both are on expiring contracts, although Hickman seems like the better trade piece given his superior production and younger age.Jeremy Chinn (S), Las Vegas RaidersOct 1, 2023; Charlotte, North Carolina, USA; Carolina Panthers safety Jeremy Chinn (21) reacts after a sack in the second quarter at Bank of America Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Bob Donnan-USA TODAY SportsChinn is the more veteran option at safety with six seasons accrued in the league. He would be a solid option and would improve the Vikings’ safety unit, but he’s not the coverage guy I believe the team needs. Here is what PFF says about his availability.Chinn enjoyed a resurgent season with the Raiders, but his future with the team might be in doubt. The former second-round pick played to a 67.7 overall PFF grade in his first campaign in Las Vegas, his best since 2021. Chinn’s 69.5 PFF run-defense grade placed in the 67th percentile at the position, and he missed a modest 9.9% of his tackle attempts. The Raiders made a splash when they selected versatile Arizona defensive back Treydan Stukes with the 38th overall pick. While Stukes may play all over the secondary, he figures to be more of a traditional safety considering the team also acquired slot corner Taron Johnson. As a result, organizations could call about Chinn with just one year left on his contract.Jer’Zhan Newton (DT), Washington CommandersDec 22, 2024; Landover, Maryland, USA; Washington Commanders defensive tackle Jer’Zhan Newton (95) jumps into the stands to celebrates with fans after the Washington Commanders beat the Philadelphia Eagles at Northwest Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Peter Casey-Imagn ImagesMinnesota bolstered its interior defensive line in this year’s draft, selecting both Caleb Banks (first round) and Domonique Orange (third round). So did Washington, and that could leave former second-round pick Jer’Zhan Newton available. Newton has struggled in run defense, but he has proven he can be an effective pass rusher, and at the right price, Brian Flores could make good use of him as a pass rush specialist. Here is PFF’s lowdown on Newton. The Commanders relentlessly fortified their ailing defense this offseason, including along the defensive line. However, that negatively affects someone like Newton. The 36th overall pick in 2024 hasn’t blossomed as Washington would’ve hoped, notching a career 50.0 overall PFF grade with a 38.6 PFF run-defense grade. Yet what has been encouraging is Newton’s pass-rushing, as his 9.3% pass-rush win rate placed in the 63rd percentile last year. The Commanders inked former Texans interior defender Tim Settle to a three-year, $25.5 million contract during free agency, which only pushes Newton down the depth chart. The 23-year-old former Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year could garner attention for teams looking to bet on his upside.Of these three options, Hickman would be the top prize and the player I’d most like to see the Vikings pursue. However, Newton would also be an intriguing option. It remains to be seen if Minnesota has any desire to be in the trade market.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 51 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMGreg Sankey: No Decision on CFP Expansion Expected at SEC Spring MeetingsDESTIN, FLA. — Standing at the podium on the eve of SEC spring meetings, with rain pounding the beaches outside, commissioner Greg Sankey joked that the day before the annual event used to be calm and quiet. A few reporters would gather to discuss meetings that mostly flew under the radar. But this year, the air was anything but calm. More than 20 reporters gathered for a rather formal press conference in a small theater at the Hilton resort. “If you can overhype a spring meeting, I think that successfully happened,” he said. The source of the anticipation: The SEC might now be the lone holdout in expanding the College Football Playoff to 24 teams. Last week, Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti appeared to draw a line in the sand, saying the league is in agreement to vote on a 24-team field, and that they’re willing to wait if the SEC doesn’t agree. (The ACC and Big 12 commissioners have since come out in favor as well.) Sankey, however, has favored 16. The two commissioners must come to an agreement by Dec. 1 for the Playoff to expand in 2027-28. But on Monday, Sankey told reporters not to expect the league to reach a consensus this week. “So you can tamp that down,” he said of the headlines.Ultimately, he said, his goal for administrators in Destin this week was to “fulfill our leadership responsibility to understand.” In other words: study. To do so, executive director Rich Clark will pay SEC administrators a visit, Sankey said, to go over models in more depth. For about 15 minutes, Sankey fielded questions about the merits of the 16- versus 24-team format. He said this week the conference will study multiple aspects of the 24-team bracket, including its impact on the regular season. For example, will the expanded field lower the value of certain teams’ late-season games when there are more slots? Conversely, would it give other teams’ games more meaning if they’re now potentially included in the expanded field?Sankey did, however, reiterate his personal commitment to the SEC Championship Game. The comments were significant at a time when others have suggested potentially nixing conference championships to make more room for an expanded bracket. But they also reflect a financial reality for top conferences like the SEC: There’s lots of value in a championship game, and it’s not necessarily worth giving that up for an expanded playoff. At one point, he gave a brief history lesson, quizzing reporters on why the CFP expanded from four teams to 12 in the first place in 2022 (the reasons included existing media rights and bowl game contracts, according to Sankey). But he noted there wasn’t one specific factor that pushed FBS leagues to agree to 12 at the time—and suggested that would probably be the case in the next phase of expansion.Future Governance QuestionsAnother source of anticipation for this year’s spring meetings: the future of college sports governance. Last week, Georgia president Jere Morehead set off a firestorm when he expressed frustration with lack of movement over a congressional bill to govern college sports. (The comments came on the heels of the SCORE Act vote being canceled yet again.) Morehead said the SEC should be able to take matters into its own hands. “If we don’t get federal intervention, in my opinion, we are going to have to do this conference by conference,” Morehead said. “We can’t allow the Wild West to continue any longer. So I’m prepared to—next week in Destin—to be ready to vote on creating an SEC mechanism and SEC rules if that’s what we have to do if Congress isn’t going to act as they should.”Sankey downplayed the idea, saying the league discusses and votes on rule changes every year at these meetings. He noted a few of interest, like the “age-based” eligibility model the NCAA is considering. But he declined to say what specific bylaws might be put to a vote. The post Greg Sankey: No Decision on CFP Expansion Expected at SEC Spring Meetings appeared first on Front Office Sports.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 51 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMDodgers get their 'clown in the clubhouse' back as Kiké Hernández returns from surgeryLOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Dodgers have their self-described “clown in the clubhouse” back. Cue the levity, energy and intensity. Utilityman Kiké Hernández was set to make his season debut Monday night against the Colorado Rockies. He was penciled in at third base in place of injured Max Muncy and set to bat ninth in the series opener.“Just getting his energy back is going to be good for our group,” manager Dave Roberts said.Hernández, 34, missed the first 53 games of the season recovering from offseason elbow surgery.“It’s fixed and I’m feeling pretty good right now,” he said in the dugout before the game.Hernández will see playing time at second and third base and possibly relieve an outfielder at times. He'll also be available off the bench to pinch hit. Muncy is sidelined with a right wrist injury, but could return Wednesday.Hernández had surgery to repair a torn muscle and torn extensor tendon in his left elbow during the offseason. The operation was done to fix an injury he originally suffered during the season and subsequently worsened.“He’s a tough competitor, tough player,” Roberts said. “I don’t think anyone appreciated how severe the injury was.”Despite the tear, Hernández gritted through the pain and helped the Dodgers win their second consecutive World Series. He appeared in all 17 playoff games, batting .250 with nine runs, one homer and seven RBIs. However, the extended play caused the tendon to detach from the bone, forcing him to undergo corrective surgery.“It was a rough year,” he said. “The best description that I can put on it is every time I would get in my batting stance I would feel like I had a blowtorch on.”After the World Series, an MRI revealed a lot of swelling and Hernández was left with the option of either rehab or having surgery. Not knowing what choice to make, he left the final decision to his family and his agent. They reminded him that he'd try to play through a core injury for three years and ended up blowing out the other side of his body, leading to multiple surgeries. They urged him to make another trip to the operating room with Dr. Neal ElAttrache.“I woke up with ElAttrache telling me, ‘This is the worst injury I’ve ever seen of this kind and I don’t know how you played,’” he said. “I told him, ‘Thank you, I take it as a compliment.’”In a post-surgery narcotic haze, Hernández FaceTimed with Andrew Friedman and urged ElAttrache to repeat to the president of baseball operations what he had just told his patient. Before his phone was taken away, Hernández told Friedman: "I did this for you so you better bring me back.” Hernández signed a $4.5 million, one-year contract in February to return for his 10th season with the Dodgers.Because of the surgery and his recovery timeline, Hernández missed the World Baseball Classic for his native Puerto Rico.“That hurt my soul a little more than I was in pain physically last year just because I’ve been dreaming about playing in the WBC in Puerto Rico since I was 13 years old and it kind of felt like it got taken away from me," he said. ”Last October, Hernández became the franchise leader in postseason appearances with his 87th game. He ranks eighth all-time in major league history with 103 postseason games. He's the fourth player of Puerto Rican descent with 100-plus career postseason appearances, joining Jorge Posada (125), Bernie Williams (121) and Yadier Molina (104). “Doing that as a Latino is very important, especially in the city where there’s such a big Latino community and we’re living in some rough times,” he said. “Especially in this city, the last two years there’s been a lot of weird things going on, so I take the responsibility to not only represent this organization but the Latino community, the Puerto Rican community. It’s something that’s very touching to my heart.”Starting the season on the IL was a blessing in disguise. Hernández was able to spend time with his son born in February and his daughter. When he wasn't waking up in pain anymore, he realized he could be back at the end of his IL stint.“It didn’t feel like I had to rush, it didn’t feel like I was going to lose my spot,” he said. “That was very key.”He played in 12 rehab games with Triple-A Oklahoma City, batting .214 with two doubles and three RBIs.“I had lot of fun with those guys,” he said. “Now I'm back with my guys here and I'm ready to go.”As the Dodgers chase a third consecutive World Series championship, Hernández will have his eye on his younger teammates when he's not cracking everyone up.“I’m in charge of checking guys,” he said. “I think guys know if I’m on them, and I’m tough on them, it means I care a lot about them.”To clear a spot for Hernández, utilityman Santiago Espinal was designated for assignment. The 31-year-old former All-Star hit .220 with three doubles, one home run and four RBIs in 26 games for the Dodgers.“I'll lob a call to him in the next couple days to thank him for everything he did for us,” Roberts said. “He was fantastic. Obviously, we had a tough decision to make. We were very forthright up front about the expectations. I think he respected that.”___AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/MLB0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 51 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMGame #54: Mariners at Athletics Game ThreadSACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA - APRIL 28: Aaron Civale #45 of the Athletics pitches against the Kansas City Royals in the second inning at Sutter Health Park on April 28, 2026 in Sacramento, California. (Photo by Ezra Shaw/Getty Images) | Getty Images Happy Memorial Day everyone! The A’s are back at home and return to the friendly confines of Sutter Health Park still in first place in their division after a 4-3 road trip. Now the team will go head-to-head against the team that won the AL West last year and are hot on our heels this season in the Seattle Mariners. Tonight marks the opening of this three-game series that could have huge implications down the line at the end of the year.Scheduled to get the ball tonight for the home team is veteran Aaron Civale. The right-hander has had a great season overall but got hit hard his last time on the mound. He surrendered five earned runs to the Angels in an eventual A’s win, getting bailed out by the offense down in Anaheim. He’ll carry a 3.31 ERA into tonight’s contest, a number he’ll be looking to lower and get closer to 3.Here’s how the Athletics’ lineup looks for the series opener:Civale on the mound 🤝 pic.twitter.com/y3vmBLR5F1— Athletics (@Athletics) May 25, 2026The A’s will welcome Brent Rooker back to the starting lineup after the DH got the series finale off yesterday. He’ll slide back into his usual cleanup spot behind Carlos Cortes, Nick Kurtz, and Shea Langeliers (who is back behind the plate tonight), with Tyler Soderstrom’s left-handed bat right behind him.The back half of the lineup gets a little shuffle as center fielder Henry Bolte rises up to the sixth spot in the batting order. Jeff McNeil and Zack Gelof follow at second and third base, respectively, while Darell Hernaiz also returns to the starting lineup batting ninth after getting a breather yesterday as well. For Seattle, they’re sending their own veteran to the mound in Luis Castillo. The 10-year vet has been a reliable arm atop the Mariners’ starting rotation for years now but is perhaps beginning to show signs of falling off. The righty is having by far his worst statistical season to date as he’s consistently gotten hit hard in all of his outings. That, plus the Mariners’ deep and young rotation options, caused the M’s to reconsider his stance as one of the team’s five starting pitchers but they’re planning to stick with him for a little while longer. The A’s could push up that decision up with a big showing on offense against Castillo. And the Mariners’ starting lineup this evening:All set for the first of three in West Sacramento. pic.twitter.com/ntWNOqJozM— Seattle Mariners (@Mariners) May 25, 2026The A’s maintain a 2.5 game lead over the Mariners in the AL West. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMHouston Rockets jersey history No. 15 - Bill Curley (2000)The Houston Rockets have had players donning a total of 52 different jersey numbers (and have one not part of any numerical series for Houston assistant coach and general manager Carroll Dawson) since their founding at the start of the 1967-68 season, worn by just under 500 players in the course of Rockets history. To honor all of the players who wore those numbers over the decades, Rockets Wire is covering the entire history of jersey numbers and the players who wore them since the founding of the team all those years ago right up to the present day. With seven of those jerseys now retired to honor some of the greatest Rockets of all time to wear those jerseys, there is a lot of history to cover. And for today's article, we will continue with the eighth of 16 who wore the No. 15 forward alum Bill Curley. After ending his college career at Boston College, Curley was picked up with the 22nd overall selection of the 1994 NBA Draft by the San Antonio Spurs. The Boston, Massachusetts native played the first season of his pro career with the Detroit Pistons after a draft night deal. He would also play for the Minnesota Timberwolves before he signed with the Houston Rockets in 2000. His stay with the team lasted until he signed with the Golden State Warriors later that season.During his time suiting up for the Rockets, Curley wore only jersey No. 15 and put up 3.0 points and 2.0 rebounds per game. All stats and data courtesy of Basketball Reference. This article originally appeared on Rockets Wire: Rockets jersey history No. 15 - Bill Curley (2000)0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 51 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMComing up empty early costs Padres, Canning in loss to PhilliesSan Diego Padres pitcher Griffin Canning (17) delivers during the the first inning against the Philadelphia Phillies at Petco Park.SAN DIEGO – Barring an early blemish on a solo home run, Griffin Canning was cruising. Then, his two-out slider in the seventh bled inside and Brandon Marsh turned on it for a two-run home run that sunk the San Diego Padres in a 3-0 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies on Memorial Day at Petco Park.Canning had his longest start since 2024, but the Padres (31-22) offense couldn’t overcome stranding eight as they went 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position. Meanwhile Philadelphia (27-27) never looked back after Kyle Schwarber’s Majors-leading 21st home run in the first inning despite several San Diego opportunities. The Padres had loaded the bases in the first inning, begun by Fernando Tatis Jr. beating out an infield single — his first of two hits on the day, giving Tatis multiple hits in back-to-back games for the second time this year. But after a Miguel Andujar knock and Xander Bogaerts reached on a Trea Turner error, consecutive strike outs and a ground out ended the threat.Meanwhile Canning was economical with his pitches for the vast majority of the afternoon, getting through five of his 6 2/3 innings by throwing 13 pitches or less. He finished allowing three hits and three runs with five strikeouts and two walks but took his third loss of the season. But Marsh’s fifth home run of the year was particularly painful because the table had been set for the San Diego starter to work around a lead off single by Schwarber and a walk to Bryce Harper. Alec Bohm grounded into a six-four-three double play, but then after a pair of pitches in the dirt to the Philly left fielder, the slider missed its spot and ended up in the Petco Porch. The seventh was the only inning that Philadelphia managed a runner in scoring position, as Yuki Matsui retired all six Phillies he faced in order in the last two innings, following Jeremiah Estranda getting a strikeout to end the seventh. It didn’t matter though, as Jesús Luzardo was able to work around Padres traffic in four of his six innings pitched on four hits, striking out six and walking two. He was able to get Manny Machado to ground into an inning-ending double play with runners on the corners in the third, then in the fifth stranded men on first and second by getting the final two outs on fly balls to improve to 4-4.Philadelphia is 19-6 when their starting pitchers go six or more innings. Closer Jhoan Duran earned his 10th save of the season and 100th of his career as he allowed a hit to Ty France before closing the game with a strikeout. The second game of the series will see San Diego start Randy Vásquez (5-2, 2.96 ERA) against right-hander Aaron Nola (2-4, 6.04 ERA), with first pitch scheduled for 6:40 p.m. on Tuesday at Petco Park.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 51 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMHow four of Illinois’ best coaches ever share a similar pastUNITED STATES - APRIL 01: College Basketball: NCAA Final Four, Closeup of Illinois coach Lou Henson on sidelines during game vs Michigan, Seattle, WA 4/1/1989 (Photo by Rich Clarkson/Sports Illustrated via Getty Images) (SetNumber: X38057 TK3 R3 F16) In terms of top basketball coaches at the University of Illinois, a lot of names come to mind. Names like Harry Combes, the first coach to win over 150 games in the Big Ten (174) and over 300 games at Illinois (316). He led the Illini to three Final Fours. There have only been five coaches who have averaged 20 wins per season.Bill Self 26 (3 seasons)Bruce Weber 23.3 (7 seasons)Brad Underwood 21.4 (9 seasons)Lon Kruger 20.25 (4 seasons)Lou Henson 20.04 (21 seasons)Four of these coaches share glaring similarities in their origins and coaching paths.Lou Henson (1975-1996) was unknown to most. Born in Oklahoma, he played college basketball at New Mexico A&M, which would later become New Mexico State. After his playing days, he started coaching at Las Cruces High School in New Mexico. Then, in 1962, he took the head coaching job at Hardin-Simmons University. In four years, Henson went 67-36 at Hardin-Simmons, topping 20 wins twice. He went from there to his alma mater, New Mexico State. Henson made four straight appearances in the NCAA tournament from 1966-67 through 1970-71, reaching the Final Four in 1969-70 and losing in the Semifinals to UCLA.At Illinois, he established a rapport with the Chicago Public League coaches. His former player and assistant coach, Jimmy Collins, was able to make inroads in the public league and establish a “pipeline”. Later on, Henson would have the same success in Peoria.Henson posted eight straight NCAA Tournament appearances (1982-83 through 1989-90), reaching the Elite Eight, Sweet Sixteen, and Final Four in a six-year stretch. He would take Illinois to the NCAA tournament 12 times.Lon Kruger (1996-2000) from Florida. Kruger, who was making a name for himself, was born in Silver Lake, Kansas. He played at Kansas State under legendary coach Jack Hartman and later served as an assistant under Hartman from 1979 to 1982, after a year as an assistant at Pittsburg State. He took over for Hartman in 1986 after 4 years at Pan American (now UT-Rio Grande Valley), going 52-59.In four years at Kansas State, he made the NCAA tournament every year he was there. He spent 6 seasons in Florida (104-80), taking them to the NCAA Tourney four times as well. At Illinois, in four seasons, he went 81-48, taking the Illini to the Tourney three times. Kruger was able to keep the Henson-established “pipelines” in Chicago and Peoria open and flowing into Champaign.Bill Self (2000 to 2003) was the coach at Tulsa. Self is from Okmulgee, Oklahoma. Self played at Oklahoma State, then served as an assistant under Leonard Hamilton. After a four-season stint with Oral Roberts, he moved on to Tulsa, where he went 74-27 in three years and took the Golden Hurricane to the Elite Eight in 2000.Self became Illinois’ head coach in 2000-01 and hit the ground running. He led the Illini to the Elite Eight that season. Over his three years at Illinois, he made two more NCAA Tournament appearances and compiled a 78-24 record as head coach. He helped expand the Illini’s recruiting reach while continuing to attract top players in the state.Brad Underwood (2017-present). Born in McPherson, Kansas, Underwood played at Hardin-Simmons University and Independence Community College, then for Kansas State under Jack Hartman. After his college career ended, he returned to Hardin-Simmons as a Graduate Assistant. He was the head coach at Dodge City Community College (1988-92). Then he served as an assistant coach at Western Illinois from 1992 to 2003. Then went to Daytona Beach CC (2003-06).In 2006, he became an assistant coach at Kansas State under both Bob Huggins (2006-11) and Frank Martin (2011-2012). He would follow Frank Martin to South Carolina (2012-13).He became the head coach at Stephen F. Austin in 2013. In three seasons, he went 89-14 with three straight NCAA tournament appearances. He then became the head coach at Oklahoma State. He completely turned around the Cowboys, who went 12-20 the previous year, to a 20-13 NCAA qualifier.Since he has been at Illinois (2017), he has a streak of six straight NCAA appearances, including Elite Eight and Final Four appearances in the last three years. Underwood has changed the culture from being competitive and hoping to win to being competitive and expecting to win. He currently has the fourth-winningest coach in Illinois basketball history with 193 wins and could pass Bruce Weber, who is third with 210.What is it that shaped these four coaches? They all grew up in small towns with modest upbringings. While some took different routes, Henson started as a high school coach, and Underwood coached at a junior college. Their careers have been and continue to be on the rise and evolving. A testament to their desire, ability, and Character.Cool factsWhen he was at Stephen F. Austin, Brad Underwood told his administrative assistant that his dream job was to be the head coach at the University of Illinois. She wrote it down, and when he got the job at Illinois, she gave him the note.Lou Henson and Bill Self’s hometowns are an hour away from each other.Lon Kruger and Brad Underwood’s hometowns are two hours away from each other.Bill Self was the host at Oklahoma State for a recruit named Brad Underwood.Kruger, Self, and Underwood all played and coached in the Big 12 before coming to Illinois. Both Kruger and Underwood played and coached under Jack Hartman. Both Henson and Underwood coached at Hardin-Simmons.Both Henson and Self are the only two Illinois coaches to lead another team to the final four as a head coach.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 51 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMKristian Winfield: Knicks’ Jalen Brunson earns King of New York statusCLEVELAND — Jalen Brunson is on the cover of the New Yorker, and it’s clear the revered publication has crowned the Knicks’ star the king of the City. The local magazine printed a large drawing of Brunson on the cover of its June 1 edition with franchise legends Patrick Ewing, Walt “Clyde” Frazier, Carmelo Anthony, Bernard King, Dave DeBusschere, Earl Monroe, John Starks, Willis Reed and Charles Oakley drawn significantly smaller beneath him.Five years ago, the same publication crowned the former Brooklyn Nets Big Three of Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving and James Harden the kings of New York via magazine cover art. They were larger fixtures as ex-Knicks R.J. Barrett and Julius Randle trailed in the background.Five years later, the Nets are nowhere to be found as the Knicks, as of Monday morning, needed one more Eastern Conference finals win over the Cavaliers to punch the franchise’s first ticket to the NBA Finals since 1999 — under Brunson’s leadership.“Obviously he’s very humble, and he’s not gonna make too much of it until he retires,” said Josh Hart, Brunson’s longtime friend and two-time teammate dating back to their NCAA championship run at Villanova. “But it’s cool for him to get that recognition.”Brunson, who earned Second Team All-NBA honors this season, averaged 26 points and 6.8 assists on 47% shooting from the field and 37% shooting from 3-point range during the regular season. In the playoffs, heading into Monday's game, he was averaging 27.8 points and 6.7 assists on 49% shooting from the field and 35% shooting from downtown.“He’s done an amazing job. He’s done an amazing job every single night showing up and doing,” teammate Karl-Anthony Towns said. “He deserves the credit, deserves the recognition. I’m glad he’s getting it. And it’s an honor to be part of that.”Holy snubThe Knicks woke up Monday morning with a 3-0 series lead in the Eastern Conference finals — and just one player on an All-NBA team.Brunson earned Second Team All-NBA honors, but Towns was a glaring omission for a Knicks team riding an 10-game playoff winning streak.Towns is a six-time All-Star who’s made Third Team All-NBA three times in his career, including last season in New York. This year, his numbers dropped to averages of 20 points, 12 rebounds and three assists on one of the worst 3-point shooting seasons of his career under Mike Brown. And yet with just one All-NBA selection, the Knicks are headed to new heights as an organization.“It talks about our team, that we’re selfless. We want to do whatever it takes for the betterment of our team and organization and winning,” Towns said after Monday morning shootaround. “It just shows that it’s a collective effort getting the job done every single night for New York. And it speaks volumes to this team.”———The San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder are in a Western Conference finals slugfest tied at two apiece. Which means with a sweep of the Cavaliers on Monday, the Knicks would once again earn additional rest time before their next playoff series. The Knicks swept the Philadelphia 76ers in the second round and got nine days off before facing a Cavs team with one day of rest following a grueling seven-game series against the Detroit Pistons.“It’s huge. Obviously a team like Cleveland played two seven-game series, so you’re playing four more games than we played and a couple of our games were blowouts and we didn’t play too many minutes,” Hart said. “Obviously that works in your benefit and you want to get as much rest as you can. I think it’s a sweet spot of getting enough rest but you don’t get rusty. We want to get that as much as we possibly can.”Game 1 of the NBA Finals is scheduled for June 3, which would give the Knicks eight days of rest if the conference finals ends in a sweep.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 51 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWashington Nationals bash six home runs in a blow out win to get over .500CLEVELAND, OHIO - MAY 25: Luis García Jr. #2 of the Washington Nationals celebrates with teammates after hitting a two-run home run during the second inning against the Cleveland Guardians at Progressive Field on May 25, 2026 in Cleveland, Ohio. (Photo by Nick Cammett/Getty Images) | Getty Images James Wood set the tone for this game when he absolutely launched a lead off home run into the Progressive Field crowd. From there, the Nats put it on the Guardians, and did not let up. The Nats launched six home runs in this contest, absolutely lighting up Guardians starter Tanner Bibee.James Wood sends his 14th HR of the season 412 FT at 107.7 MPH.In his age 23 season:255 PA14 HR I 46 R8 SB17.6% BB% I 29.4% K%.272 ISO.257/.400/.529.929 OPS I .401 wOBA158 wRC+ pic.twitter.com/2xaatSOvaN— Running From The OPS (@OPS_BASEBALL) May 25, 2026This weekend in Atlanta, the Nats offense was mostly neutralized. Maybe it was due to the Braves elite pitching staff, or the presence of Darnell Coles in the opposing dugout. Whatever the reason, the Nats were still able to take 2 out of 3 from the Braves without having their A game, which is the offense.Tonight the Nats had that A game early and often. Tanner Bibee was just not fooling any of these Nats hitters. It really felt like Bibee was tipping his pitches based on some of the swings these Nats hitters were taking. They seemed to know what was coming, and then absolutely hammered the pitches they did get.One of the subplots of this series was the Aussie battle between Curtis Mead and Travis Bazzana. As the former first overall pick, Bazzana is the bigger name, but tonight belonged to Mead. Two batters after Wood, Mead hit a two run blast right into the hands of a Guardians fan wearing an Australia t-shirt. In the 5th inning, Mead launched another one. This was his first career multi-homer game.Curtis Mead's 1st career multi-homer game. Washington's 6 home runs (so far) are tied for the most by the Club in a single game this season (also: 5/12 at CIN). pic.twitter.com/lbxzwPRTvS— Nationals Communications (@NationalsComms) May 25, 2026The pickup of Curtis Mead has been such a great addition by Paul Toboni. Mead now has an .844 OPS and is hammering righties and lefties. When Brady House got sent down, most thought third base would be a platoon between Jorbit Vivas and Mead. However, Mead has gotten the majority of the starts, even playing against a righty tonight. He is running with that opportunity, and it seems like he is living up to his prospect pedigree at 25 years of age. While the Nats were blasting home runs, the pitching staff was also doing a nice job. Outside of a solo homer, PJ Poulin was solid in his two innings as the opener. However, Zack Littell was the real star of the show. He threw the last 7 innings of the game, only allowing one run and striking out 7. The veteran righty did a great job saving the bullpen and shutting down the Guardians.Obviously, the 6 home runs were the story. But don't discount what Zack Littell did tonight (7 innings of 1-run ball on 106 pitches) and what he's done in five games this month (2.19 ERA, 0.973 WHIP).— Mark Zuckerman (@MarkZuckerman) May 26, 2026In May, Littell has been who the Nats thought they were getting. Littell has posted a 2.19 ERA in 24.2 innings this month. After giving up 11 home runs in April, Littell has surrendered just two long balls this month. He seems like he has settled into the season after signing late in the offseason. The power show the Nats put on in the early innings was absolutely outrageous though. They hit 5 home runs in the first 13 at bats of the game. James Wood, Curtis Mead, Jacob Young, Luis Garcia Jr., and CJ Abrams all went deep. It was truly a magical thing to watch. The Nationals are TEEING OFF tonight ‼️CJ Abrams makes it FIVE homers through the first 13 batters of the game! pic.twitter.com/e1rNY2f3tZ— Just Baseball (@JustBB_Media) May 25, 2026So many guys in this lineup are taking a massive leap. Abrams and Wood were already good, but now they are elite. Jacob Young has tapped into power nobody thought he had. Curtis Mead looks like the guy who was a top 50 prospect all those years ago and even Keibert Ruiz has been excellent with the bat. Some of this is young players taking natural steps in their development, but you have to give so much credit to Matt Borgschulte, Andrew Aydt, and this hitting staff. We are almost in June, and this team has the most runs in all of baseball. They made Tanner Bibee, a solid arm in this league, look like a batting practice pitching. It is crazy to see what is going on in the Nations Capital.Your Washington Nationals are over .500 after 50 games for the first time in 1,788 days. There is a whole generation of young Nats fans, who were too young to remember 2019 now. All they know is losing and rebuilding. I can only imagine how much fun those little kids are having watching James Wood and CJ Abrams go nuclear. For the first time in 1,788 days, the Washington Nationals are over .500 after 50 games in a season Hello old friend pic.twitter.com/V3VGho6oa1— Shack (@WeAreAllShack) May 26, 2026Honestly, this Nats team is making me feel like a kid again. That 2010’s magic is slowly starting to come back. You go into a series expecting to win games, no matter the opponent. The other team has to fear the Nats, not the other way around. Being the young, fun new kid on the block is such an exciting feeling.I hope Nats Park is packed this weekend to support this group that has exceeded expectations so massively. It is really May 25th, and the Nats are playing above .500 baseball. Sure, it could come crashing down at some point, but this is already the most fun Nats season in at least five years. This team is making the fanbase feel alive again.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 51 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMTatsuya Imai throws 6 no-hit innings vs. Rangers, 2 starts after disastrous return from injured listTatsuya Imai’s May 12 return from the injured list was a disaster. The Japanese standout playing in his fourth MLB game for the Houston Astros allowed 5 hits, 6 earned runs, 3 walks and 2 hit-by-pitches in a 10-2 loss to the Seattle Mariners and left the game with a 9.24 ERA. Those struggles appear to be behind him.Making his second start since that meltdown against the Mariners, Imai pitched six no-hit innings against the Texas Rangers Monday night. He struck out two and walked four. He didn’t return for the seventh inning as the Astros held a 9-0 lead. The no-hitter was still intact, but Imai had already thrown 97 pitches through six innings. With a 9-0 lead and Imai’s high pitch count, Astros manager Joe Espada opted to not stress the arm of his starter any further. Imai had already spent part of his debut MLB season on the IL with arm fatigue. But the Astros can leave Monday’s outing feeling considerably better about Imai’s MLB outlook that they did two weeks prior. His ERA still stands at a bloated 6.17. But that’s three-plus runs better than it was on May 12.Imai, 28, joined MLB for this season after making three All-Star teams in Japan’s Pacific League as a member of the Seibu Lions. He posted a 1.92 ERA with 178 strikeouts and 45 walks over 163 2/3 innings in his final season with the Lions. The Astros signed him in the offseason to a three-year contract with $54 million guaranteed, hoping that he could be a top-of-the rotation starter. Instead, he struggled out of the gates and entered Monday having allowed 3-6 earned runs in four of his five previous starts. He did deliver one previous outing that hinted at the upside he displayed Monday night. In an 11-0 win over the Athletics on April 4, Imai allowed 3 hits while striking out 9 and walking 3 an 5 2/3 innings of This story will be updated.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 51 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMJosef Newgarden has walking boot after Indy 500 crash. Will he race in Detroit?INDIANAPOLIS – Josef Newgarden exited Sunday's Indianapolis 500 76 laps early after spinning into the outside wall in Turn 4 of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway; and a day later, Newgarden was in a walking boot.Newgarden was seen and released from the IMS infield medical unit after the crash, although he didn't do IndyCar's procedural media interviews afterward. At Monday evening's Indy 500 Victory Celebration, the two-time Indy 500 champion had a boot on his left foot on the red carpet. Newgarden claimed he will race in this weekend's Detroit Grand Prix, and he said the boot will stay on "until the cosmetics are complete.""It's just a big hit — big whip, I think was the big thing about it," Newgarden said. "So, just the nature of the angle of it, more than anything."JOSEF NEWGARDEN CRASHES COMING TO GREEN! 🫣 pic.twitter.com/CpIwkUM7WD— NTT INDYCAR SERIES (@IndyCar) May 24, 2026Newgarden finished 28th in the race after appearing to have race pace worthy of competing for the win. He was fourth heading into the restart before losing control of his No. 2 Team Penske Chevrolet."It's a tough mistake," Newgarden said. "You touch that curbing and it happens quick. I mean, I didn't even realize I made a mistake until I was sideways, and the next thing you know, you're in the wall. Some mistakes you can see them coming and you can counteract them. That one, unfortunately, I didn't know until it was too late."It was my fault. I lost my sight line, and you can't be touching that curb."After winning back-to-back Indy 500s in 2023 and 2024, Newgarden has exited the last two races early. Last year, it was a fuel pressure problem that ended Newgarden's day. Newgarden, who made last-lap passes to win both of his Indy 500s, had to watch from outside the cockpit as Felix Rosenqvist passed Marcus Armstrong and David Malukas for the win in the closest finish the race has ever seen."I just wish I was in the fight at the end. It looked fun," he said. "They had a great race going, and it would've been amazing to be a part of that."Zion Brown is IndyStar's motorsports reporter. Follow him at @z10nbr0wn. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMRoundtable predictions on where Milan Momcilovic will play next yearMar 22, 2026; St. Louis, MO, USA; Iowa State Cyclones forward Milan Momcilovic (22) speaks during the postgame press conference after the game against the Kentucky Wildcats during a second round game of the men's 2026 NCAA Tournament at Enterprise Center. Mandatory Credit: Jeff Le-Imagn Images | Jeff Le-Imagn Images Kentucky Basketball remains in the mix for Iowa State transfer forward Milan Momcilovic as he continues weighing his NBA Draft decision.Momcilovic currently has three options on the table: Stay in the NBA Draft, return to college and play for Kentucky, or return to another program. Regardless of the decision, the talented forward is expected to have a massive market if he withdraws from the draft process. In today’s college basketball landscape, shooters with size are among the most valuable players in the sport, and Momcilovic fits that mold perfectly. The 6-foot-8 forward emerged as one of the top stretch forwards in the country during his time at Iowa State thanks to his scoring ability and perimeter shooting.Because of that, there is a growing belief that Momcilovic could earn around $5-6 million in NIL opportunities if he returns to college basketball. Kentucky is believed to be one of the schools pushing hardest for the talented forward. At the same time, Momcilovic continues receiving positive feedback from NBA teams during the pre-draft process, making his upcoming decision one of the more intriguing storylines to watch over the next week.Predictions on Milan Momcilovic’s futureChris BeasmoreFor me, I do believe Milan Momcilovic returns to college basketball and ultimately suits up for Kentucky next season. After Mark Pope and his staff missed out on the No. 1 overall player in the 2026 class, 5-star forward Tyran Stokes, Kentucky needs a true star-caliber addition to this roster, and Momcilovic would immediately provide that. While I do not know if adding him alone suddenly makes Kentucky the clear national title favorite, I absolutely believe he would raise the ceiling of this team into a legitimate second-weekend NCAA Tournament team with Elite Eight and possibly Final Four potential.Momcilovic’s fit in Pope’s system also makes too much sense. Kentucky needs another elite scorer and floor spacer, and the Iowa State transfer is one of the best shooters in college basketball. Another season at the college level could also greatly benefit his NBA stock long term, especially in a loaded draft class.Louisville feels like a serious contender simply because it feels like they currently have unlimited NIL money, similar to what Kentucky had last offseason. But we also saw that simply spending big does not automatically guarantee success. Meanwhile, St. John’s missed out on Arizona transfer Massamba Diop after he committed to Gonzaga, meaning Rick Pitino and his staff likely still have significant resources available to pursue another major addition. With Pope already losing one recruiting battle to Pitino for Donnie Freeman, landing Momcilovic would be a massive statement for Kentucky heading into next season.Prediction: Withdraws from the draft and commits to UK.Ethan DewittHonestly, a return to college basketball has always seemed like the correct choice, and that is what will happen here. Why Kentucky? Well, once again, it just makes the most sense. The Cats can offer a ton of money, a ton of minutes, and a star role. Mark Pope and his staff will have to really hit this recruitment running, but get a win here, and things seemingly go from doom and gloom to legitimate hope for the 2026-27 season. Prediction: Withdraws from the draft and commits to UK.Brady ThomasMilan Momcilovic could really use another year at the college level, but unfortunately, I don’t see him playing at Kentucky next season. The Wildcats’ coaching staff has been incredibly interested in Momcilovic ever since he entered the transfer portal, but they’re not the only team interested. Louisville and St. John’s are also potential suitors, and I see the Wisconsin native playing for Rick Pitino next year, as he fits the Johnnies play style very well.Plus, Pitino has far more credibility and a team that Momcilovic could turn into a Final Four contender. And until Mark Pope can prove he can land one of these elite transfers/high school prospects, it’s hard to pick him to win such a recruitment.Prediction: Returns to school but not UK.Dylan BallardI think Kentucky gets Momcilovic. He’s already spoken highly of Mark Pope and the offense. He sees that UK needs a shooter, and he’d be the absolute perfect fit as a wing for this team. I actually think Milan wants to stay in the draft, but at a reported $5-6 million price tag waiting for him in the portal and only a second-round projection in front of him, the math is too hard to ignore. He ends up in Kentucky. And even though I think Mark Pope has mismanaged this offseason, if Momcilovic is a Cat, then the UK head coach ends up with a pretty promising roster.Prediction: Withdraws from the draft and commits to UK.Drew HolbrookMilan’s decision is an interesting one. The Wildcats definitely have a void for a proven knockdown shooter. Kam Williams and even Braydon Hawthorne can step in that role, but having a guy like Momcilovic elevates the lineup. I don’t think he stays in the draft, as there are too many talented players, and he is sitting on a second-round projection. Momcilovic is also going to command a heavy NIL fee and make a lot of money if he returns to school. I think he does that in Lexington.Prediction: Withdraws from the draft and commits to UK.Tristan PharisWhile there is an argument to be made that this Kentucky roster has improved in many areas from last year’s roster, there is a concern about the lack of star power. Not that a team can’t be successful without a star, but it makes it much easier. There is certainly hope that Moreno can make a jump from an All-SEC freshman season, but there is no one on the roster who has proven they are an all-conference-caliber player. However, one such player being targeted by Kentucky is Milan Momcilovic. He has also yet to withdraw from the NBA Draft, but he is solidly projected as a second-round pick and has not received a promise. While there are athleticism and defense concerns NBA teams have, there is certainly room in college for a 6-foot-8 wing who is elite from deep, should he decide to return to school, which most expect him to.The Second-Team All-Big 12 selection became the first player in college basketball history to lead the country in both 3-point percentage (48.6%) and 3-pointers (136) made in a single season. With a Kentucky team that needs a proven shooter and has a big role on the wing they can offer, there is a clear fit. Momcilovic echoed the same at the NBA Draft Combine earlier this month, saying, “If I were to choose Kentucky, that would be a good fit for me. I feel like I’d be a great player for him, and he’d be a good coach for me.”This staff has failed to close on several targets this — Tyran Stokes, Donnie Freeman — and they need to prove they can do it. Looking at the competitors, though, Kentucky makes the most sense. There is a basketball fit, a role, and the ability to make him one of the highest-paid players in the country next season. I believe Momcilovic will withdraw from the NBA Draft, and I am very bullish on Kentucky’s chances with him.Prediction: Withdraws from the draft and commits to UK.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 51 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMFarah O'Keefe wins NCAA title as Eastern Michigan surprises to qualify for team eventCARLSBAD, Calif. (AP) — Texas junior Farah O'Keefe ended a wild back nine with birdies on her last two holes Monday for a 2-under 70 to win the NCAA women's golf title, the first for a Texas player in nearly 30 years. The final round for individual play reduced the field to eight teams that advanced to match play. There was no greater surprise than Eastern Michigan in its NCAA Championship debut. Stanford, which has won the team title two of the last four years, won by 13 shots for the No. 1 seed.O'Keefe, the low amateur at The Chevron Championship last month in the first LPGA major of the year, made only two pars along the back nine at La Costa Resort. One of her three bogeys came on a shank on the 14th hole where she had to scramble for bogey. But she never lost the lead or her composure. O'Keefe built a cushion with a wedge into 6 feet on the par-4 17th, and she capped off her big day with a 20-foot birdie putt on the par-5 18th.She finished at 12-under 276, two shots ahead of U.S. Women's Amateur champion Megha Ganne of Stanford, who also birdied her last two holes when O'Keefe had the title wrapped up.The last Texas player to win an NCAA women's golf title was Heather Bowie in 1997.The Longhorns easily qualified for match play, with the quarterfinals and semifinals scheduled for Tuesday and the championship match on Wednesday.Stanford led the eight teams into match play at 22-under par. Only one other team, Southern California, finished under par at 9 under.Eastern Michigan was ranked No. 226 in women's golf two years ago when Josh Brewer — fired after 12 years as women's golf coach at Georgia — took over. The Eagles were No. 122 a year ago, and ended the season this year at No. 27.But they made it to the NCAAs, and then delivered the only team score under par on a blustery day in north San Diego County. Savannah de Bock of Belgium, who left Georgia with Brewer, led the way with a 69 as Eastern Michigan shot 4-under 284 as a team to go from 14th place to fifth.“Round of our program's history right there,” Brewer said. “Nobody wants to see us because we're crazy enough to do something even more fun than this.”Eastern Michigan takes on Texas in a quarterfinal match, while Stanford gets Pepperdine. Arkansas plays Oklahoma State and Southern California takes on Duke.___AP golf: https://apnews.com/hub/golf0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 51 Visualizações 0 Anterior -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMLocal doctor shares warning signs of pneumonia following Kyle Busch’s sudden deathBoth of the top-tier Cup Series championships Kyle Busch won in his career happened when he was at Joe Gibbs Racing in Huntersville. There is now a memorial blocking out the number 18 parking spot, corresponding to the number 18 car Busch drove over the 15 years he spent there. Mere seconds after winning Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600, Trackhouse motorsports driver Daniel Suárez was overcome with emotion. “The race is official,” the announcer said Sunday night. “Daniel Suárez wins the Coca-Cola 600. What a tribute to Kyle Busch.” It was a moment of celebration combined with sadness over the sudden loss of someone Suárez says was a mentor early in his career. “It’s been a very tough week,” said Suárez. “Kyle, he was special.” As NASCAR paused pre-race to honor Busch, fans were moved by heart-wrenching moments, like when his grieving family was brought out on the track. “Our thoughts and prayer are with his wife and kids, entire family,” said Madison Ricardo, race fan. On lap eight, fans in the stands held up the number eight, paying homage to the car Busch last drove. “It was beautiful,” said NASCAR fan Hunter Wilson. “I think they did a very good job of honoring him.” PREVIOUS COVERAGE: Fans reinforce need to visit doctor after sudden death of NASCAR driver Kyle BuschBut as the racing world continues to mourn his death, concern and awareness around the severe pneumonia turned sepsis that took his life is just as prevalent. “Sepsis is a medical emergency, pneumonia can get worse rapidly,” said Dr. Daniel Feinstein. He’s a critical care specialist with Novant Health. While Dr. Feinstein is not involved in Busch’s case, he is the co-director for sepsis care at the hospital. He says the elderly, very young children, and those with compromised immune systems are most at risk of pneumonia. But he explained how someone much younger with a stronger immune system could develop a life-threatening case. “They compensate by breathing faster, they compensate maybe for the heart rate going up," said Dr. Feinstein. “And those patients can have dramatic, rapid declines.” Dr. Feinstein says while Busch’s untimely death is a horrific wake-up call, he says as long as a person is vigilant about the symptoms and seeks medical care, pneumonia can be treated at home with antibiotics. “When we can get to you quickly, we can help patients quite a bit, but time matters,” he said. Dr. Feinstein says Novant Health has a standard approach to the identification and treatment of sepsis. He says the data shows they find an average of 30 patients each month that would have been predicted not to actually are surviving and returning home. The doctor also said that there are significant spikes in pneumonia cases starting in the fall going into winter, and also early spring.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 51 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COM76ers send Paul George to Eastern Conference contender in offseason trade proposal76ers send Paul George to Eastern Conference contender in offseason trade proposal originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.A new trade proposal from André Snellings of ESPN has the Philadelphia 76ers moving Paul George to another Eastern Conference contender. George has two years remaining on his current contract with the Sixers, including a $56 million player option for the 2027-28 NBA season. Sixers ship Paul George to Pistons for trio of role players in ESPN trade proposal Snellings' proposal sees the Sixers shipping George to the Detroit Pistons for a trio of role players in Duncan Robinson, Isaiah Stewart and Caris LeVert. No draft compensation is exchanged in the proposed trade. The trade would allow the Sixers to shed George's salary while adding some serviceable role players around their nucleus of Tyrese Maxey, V.J. Edgecombe and Joel Embiid. Meanwhile, the Pistons would get a two-way player who could serve as a secondary scorer in George. "The Eastern Conference's top seed struggled in the playoffs due in large part to a lack of secondary scoring beyond MVP contender Cade Cunningham. George, 36, a high-risk option due to his injury history and age, has proved he can provide the level of scoring the Pistons need while also fitting into their strong defensive identity. The Pistons would receive the first-rounder to help mitigate their risk in taking on George's max contract for the next three seasons," Snellings. "The 76ers would get a somewhat fresh start in the post-Daryl Morey era. They are building the current team around the dynamic backcourt of Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe, and both Robinson and LeVert would give the Sixers rotation-level shooters on the wing who could either start or contribute off the bench for teams with playoffs aspirations. Stewart is a starting-caliber big man with a defensive edge who also is accustomed to coming off the bench during his time with the Pistons." This story will be updated. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWhat to know about every team in Eugene Regional as Washington State sets out for NCAA TournamentMay 25—Washington State's road to Omaha will go through a couple of old friends. The Cougars learned their NCAA Tournament fate Monday morning, being paired in the Eugene Regional with No. 11 overall seed Oregon, Oregon State and Yale.WSU (30-26) opens the double-elimination regional against Oregon State (43-12) on Friday at noon. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.The other two teams in the regional, Oregon and Yale, will then play the second game of the day. The winners of those games will play Saturday night, while the losers will play in an elimination game earlier Saturday. The group pits three former Northwestern Pac-12 teams that have been scattered across conference realignment. The Ducks (40-16), in their second year of Big Ten play, finished third in the regular season and runner-up at the conference tournament, pushing the nation's top overall seed UCLA to extra innings in the championship game. The Beavers, who will rejoin the Cougars in the new Pac-12 next season, spent the past two years independent, rather than a temporary member of the Mountain West. The Cougars received an automatic bid after beating San Diego State in the Mountain West Tournament championship game on Sunday.WSU and Oregon State played twice this season, splitting the series. The Beavers won the first game 18-0, before the Cougars were able to hold on for a 7-6 win in the second game, which became one of the Cougars' signature wins this spring. The Beavers also split two games with Oregon.Yale (30-13-1) swept the Ivy League regular-season and tournament titles and will arrive in Eugene on a seven-game winning streak.Washington State is playing in its first NCAA Tournament since 2010 and 17th overall. The Cougars have an all-time record of 29-32 and have played in four College World Series, the last in 1976.The Cougars are in the midst of their best season in more than a decade and a half. Eric Segura is no slouch as a top option, especially paired with a steady bullpen led by closer Albert Roblez, who has a 1.67 ERA and 14 saves.Oregon State fared well early in the season against high-major competition, but due to an independent schedule have only played one such foe the last two months, a 7-3 loss to Oregon on April 22. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMGiants get Kelly-ed & Ketel-ed once againMay 25, 2026; San Francisco, California, USA; Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Merrill Kelly (29) returns to the dugout after the bottom of the sixth inning against the San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park. Mandatory Credit: Kelley L Cox-Imagn Images | Kelley L Cox-Imagn Images Turns out slam-fest over the weekend against the Chicago White Sox means very little to Merrill Kelly, Ketel Marte, and the Arizona Diamondbacks. The five days that elapsed between the Giants last meeting with starter Kelly wasn’t enough to cleanse the palate. The 2026 Giants can’t figure him out, nor could they over the past seven seasons either. He’s now collected a quality start in his last six games against San Francisco, a streak that dates back to September 2023. Over 22 starts in his career, Kelly has posted a 3.30 ERA over 133.2 innings pitched. That’s a solid two-thirds of a season in which Kelly has pitched admirably against the Giants. Results that bear a quiet dignity, like if a minor British Royal was on the mound. Kelly doesn’t light up the radar gun. He relies heavily on a change-up and a variety of low-90s fastballs that he cuts, sinks, and places pretty much where he wants it. The 37 year old has never been the ace or the star. His celebrity doppelganger is Chris Elliot, who is someone you don’t know by name but absolutely recognize. Elliot isn’t going to win an Oscar, and Kelly probably won’t ever win a Cy Young, or even an All Star nod, but he’s made a career out of dotting 90 MPH cutters on the outside corner of the zone. As Mike Krukow likes to point out, there are throwers and pitchers, and Kelly is the latter. After a really rough start to the year in which he allowed 19 runs across three consecutive starts, Kelly has found his footing, and the Giants have played an integral part in regaining his form. Kelly has now won his last four starts, following up a quality start (3 ER, 6 IP) on May 25th with another rock solid outing, allowing 2 earned runs on 4 hits over 7 innings pitched in San Francisco’s 6-2 loss. View LinkThe only breakthrough against him came in the 4th when Rafael Devers took on Triple’s Alley with the second-longest double in the Majors (the longest was hit by Devers yesterday). At the time, it gave the Giants a 2-1 lead. Which was nice. It’s fun when your team is down by a run and then a pitch later, your team is up for a run. Like many leads this year, this feeling of positivity and good-will proved fleeting. I was listening to the game on the radio as I warmed up for my softball game, and the goodwill bought by Devers’s double lasted about as long as it took for me to move a milk carton full of softballs from the left field foul pole to the right. View LinkWhile Landen Roupp was perhaps not the sharpest he’s been, it was a couple of costly defensive mistakes in the 5th that Arizona capitalized. Number-9 hitter Tommy Troy reached second on a throwing error by Willy Adames. Ketel Marte tied on the next pitch when Casey Schmitt, playing left due to the health of Heliot Ramos and Jung Hoo Lee, misplayed an opposite-field flare. Maybe a more experienced or confident corner outfielder would’ve reeled the ball in, but with an xBA of .610, it’s hard to argue that Ramos, or any other player on the Giants roster who’s played left this year, is that outfielder. The major mistake on the play wasn’t not catching the ball, but letting it skip past. Instead of a single with runners on the corners giving Roupp to work out of it (which he essentially did in the 3rd), the lead was gone, and the Diamondbacks were set-up to retake it. View LinkBy the time the 4-run 5th was over Roupp had thrown 93 pitches. He bagged 7 strikeouts but lacked an efficiency in at-bats (against a tough contact-oriented Arizona lineup to be fair) to survive any deeper in the game. The error and misplay obviously didn’t help either. And with Roupp out of the game and Joel Peguero in, Marte continued to be the bat-wielding version of Kelly, extending Arizona’s lead with a 2-RBI single that effectively put the game to bed.View LinkThat’s two wins in a row for Kelly, four more hits and three more runs batted in for Marte (bumping up his totals to 10 H and 10 RBI vs. SF), and Arizona’s fourth win in as many games so far against our Giants.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 51 Visualizações 0 Anterior

The late-nighters are encouraged to get the party started, but everyone else is invited to join in as you wake up the next morning and into the afternoon.Last week I asked you for your opinion of the ABS system, so far. You were mostly positive about it as 45 percent of you would leave it exactly as it is. Another 32 percent think two challenges are too few and would add some more. Here’s the part where we listen to music and talk movies. You’re free to skip ahead if you’d like. This week we’re continuing to remember the career of Miles Davis, who was born 100 years ago tomorrow, May 26. So far we’ve looked at Miles’ bebop origins with Charlie Parker and the way he branched out from that with “the birth of the cool” in the late-forties. I’m very hesitant to talk about music theory because my knowledge of it is definitely elementary and limited. I can’t say I understand a lot of it. But I’ll make a go of it anyway but warn you that if this stuff interests you, you should seek out other sources on it. The “cool jazz” and “hard bop” (which added rhythm and blues and gospel elements) music that emerged in the fifties tweaked rather than revolutionized jazz music. They all still belonged to the tonal music family that emphasized chord progression and the soloist improvising to keep up with the chords. Modal jazz turns that on its head. The chords no longer follow a natural progression and are instead usually simplified down. The soloist then improvises over the chords rather than with them. The analogy that makes sense to me is that tonal jazz was “vertical” (in that the soloist was playing with the chords that are written vertically on the page) and modal jazz is “horizontal” (in which the notes are played over the ground laid by the chords). This gives the soloist a lot more freedom to do their own thing, although there are some rules, unlike in free jazz.Anyways, Miles was always looking for the next big thing and was fascinated by this new, avant-garde approach to music. He found a similar kindred soul in pianist Bill Evans (no relation to pianist Gil Evans, who helped Miles create “the cool”) and began to experiment with modal jazz in his 1958 album Milestones. Miles was pleased enough with the results that he decided to do an entire album of modal jazz: Kind of Blue.It helped that by this point, Miles had assembled one of the greatest jazz combos ever, which would become known as the first great Miles Davis Quintet or Sextet. Beside Evans on piano, John Coltrane played tenor sax and Julian “Cannonball” Adderley was on alto sax. Paul Chambers was the bassist and Jimmy Cobb was the drummer. Evans already had one foot out the door into his own career so Wynton Kelly replaced Evans on “Freddie Freeloader” and would serve as the final member of that great group.Kind of Blue revolutionized jazz in 1959. Pretty soon almost everyone was following along with the revolution that brought forth modal jazz. There’s some dispute over this, but most sources claim that it’s still the best-selling jazz album of all time. It’s the album I’d recommend as a first step for anyone interested in getting into jazz. If you only know two or three jazz songs, you probably know the first song on Kind of Blue, “So What.” There are basically only two chord patterns played repeatedly throughout the tune. The magic comes from what those soloists are able to do over those chords.Adderley is missing from this performance and Kelly is firmly in as the pianist And here is an interesting performance of “All Blues.” a song from the Kind of Blue album. I find this interesting because while it’s the music of the first Great Miles Davis Quintet, by the time of this performance in 1964, those musicians had all moved on. Instead, this is the second Great Miles Davis Quintet—Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Tony Williams—playing the music of the first one.For Memorial Day, we’re going to do a war movie. War films have been a part of the art form since the beginning of cinema and few of them are ever better than 1930’s All Quiet on the Western Front. The original is far better than the much-praised (far too much, in my opinion) 2022 version by Edward Berger. The original film was directed by the Moldovan emigré Lewis Milestone (né Leib Mendelevich Milstein). While Milestone directed many other films in many other genres, and his films The Front Page, Of Mice and Men and The Strange Love of Martha Ivers are rightly considered masterpieces, All Quiet earned him the reputation of someone to hire if you wanted to make a great war picture. Twenty-nine years after All Quiet, Milestone made his final war picture, the Gregory Peck-vehicle Pork Chop Hill (1959). While Pork Chop Hill is not in the same class as All Quiet on the Western Front, it combines the earlier film’s well-shot combat scenes with a similar cynicism about the men who make war, although sympathetically portraying the poor ordinary men who are forced to fight it. While not a classic, Pork Chop Hill is a strong portrait of America’s “Forgotten War” in Korea. Peck had read the account of the Battle of Pork Chop Hill in a book by military journalist S.L.A. Marshall and thought it would make a great movie. Peck bought the rights for his own Melville Productions and cast himself as Lt. Joe Clemons, who was a platoon commander in K Company assigned to take what the Americans called Pork Chop Hill in Korea. It’s a curious order as the hill was of little military importance. Additionally, the peace talks are in full swing and a ceasefire could be agreed to at any time. In fact, soldiers get warned not to be the last person to die in this war. Peck plays Clemons as a kind of war movie stereotype—the hyper-competent junior officer who is frustrated with the army, the war and his men, but heroically carries out his orders to the letter, although not without a little grumbling first. Because he’s played by Peck, Clemons is not overly-demonstrative about anything, but that kind of stoic heroism works in a film like this. There isn’t a lot of time for character development in Pork Chop Hill. Most of the film is dedicated to the action scenes, However, the film does feature Woody Strode as Private Franklin, a soldier who has no intention of dying in a battle that he doesn’t care about for a country that doesn’t treat Black men like himself well. Along with James Edwards as a more traditional corporal who keeps Franklin in line, Pork Chop Hill at least nods at racial issues and the newly-integrated U.S. Armed Forces in the Korean War. But it really only nods at it, as Pork Chop Hill is not at all interested in giving Franklin or any other Black soldier an excuse to not to fight. In the end, Clemons wins the battle of wills with Franklin, just in time to win the actual battle with the Chinese. Pork Chop Hill also highlights the newly-integrated army by casting George Shibata as Lt. Suki Ohashi, who ends up in command of a different platoon tasked with taking Pork Chop Hill. Shibata wasn’t an actor. In fact, he was the first Japanese-American to ever graduate from West Point and was a Korean War veteran, although he served as a pilot and was not involved with taking Pork Chop Hill. By 1959, he was a law student at USC and got cast because the real Joe Clemons thought he looked like his own Japanese-American executive officer at Pork Chop Hill. Shibata is a natural at the part, which makes sense considering his military background. He would go on to finish law school and pass the bar but would act occasionally on the side from his legal work. In fact, Pork Chop Hill made a conscious decision to hire unknowns, other than Peck. Strode, a former professional football player who had been playing bit parts in Hollywood for five or six years, got his big break in Pork Chop Hill. Other actors who show up as soldiers read like a who’s who of seventies television: Rip Torn, George Peppard, Norman Fell, Robert Blake, Gavin McLeod, Harry Guardino, Harry Dean Stanton and Clarence Williams III are all in this film. Martin Landau made his screen debut in Pork Chop Hill. It can be fun seeing how many future stars you can spot. But neither the acting nor the dialogue are the reasons to watch Pork Chop Hill. Instead, the film goes from one well-done action war scene to another. Milestone truly captures the brutal, violent chaos of the battlefield. Communication is constantly breaking down and it gets people killed. There are friendly-fire incidents. There was a reason Milestone was known for his war pictures because most of the film is dedicated to those battle scenes and they don’t disappoint. Pork Chop Hill isn’t a revisionist war movie. It questions the heroic narrative of war stories but in the end, kind of unconvincingly comes down on a pro-war side. There’s a Chinese propaganda broadcaster who asks the soldiers over some loudspeakers why they are willing to die for such a pointless piece of land. Honestly, it’s a good question that the film only unconvincingly answers by saying it’s a test of wills between freedom and communism. But the film never questions the heroism of the men actually fighting the battle, except maybe Strode’s character. Like Lt. Clemons, these men aren’t born heroes. Most of them would rather not be. But the Battle of Pork Chop Hill thrust heroism upon them, which was, according to the filmmakers, why it was important. Here’s a battle scene from Pork Chop Hill. The trailer itself that’s online is kind of boring, with Gregory Peck spending a lot of time just explaining to you why it’s an important movie that you should see. Here you get a good look of the best reason to watch Pork Chop Hill. Welcome back to everyone who skips the music and movies. I don’t really know what to say about the Cubs at the moment. They clearly aren’t playing well. They clearly are getting more than their fair share of bad luck. But to be honest, they were getting more than their fair share of good luck during the two ten-game winning streaks, when they were playing well.Tonight I’m going to ask you about rookie C/DH Moisés Ballesteros. He was one of the bright spot of the first month of the season. For his first 25 games of the season, he was hitting .387 with a .435 OBP and five home runs. Even as a pure DH, those kinds of numbers are special. Over his last 18 games, things have turned around and not in a good way. Not counting today when he went 2 for 2 with a walk, Ballesteros is hitting .057/.177/.133 with just one home run. Ballesteros was 3 for 53 over that span, although today moves it up to 5 for 55. That’s still a .091 batting average. So should Ballesteros get sent down to the minors to get his groove back? I think there’s a good argument that you learn to hit major league pitching in the major leagues. Sending someone down to Triple-A doesn’t help with that. On the other hand, the Cubs are still trying to win games and a guy with little to no defensive value who isn’t hitting isn’t helping the team win. He might also be able to work out whatever is wrong with his swing right now better down in Iowa. The current problem with sending Mo Baller back to Iowa is who to call up in his place. The logical situation would be to send him down once Matt Shaw comes off the injured list. We hope that’s soon, like in the next week, but we don’t know. The only position players in Iowa currently are second baseman/center fielder James Triantos and outfielder Justin Dean. Dean is hitting .226, albeit with a .366 OBP, but that doesn’t seem like he’d be much of an improvement over Ballesteros, other than he can play the outfield. Triantos is hitting .284/.317/.420 with four home runs and 11 steals would seem the more logical option. Both players could pinch-hit and pinch-run. Dean has a lot more defensive value than Triantos, who is just playable at both of his positions. The other option would be corner infielder BJ Murray, who is hitting .315 with a .404 OBP and six home runs. He’d require a move on the 40-man, but if the Cubs aren’t planning on calling up Dean, he’d be an easy choice for being designated for assignment. Of course, anyone called up now could be sent back down when Shaw comes off the IL. So now it’s your turn. Do you think it’s time to shake things up by sending Ballesteros down to Iowa? Or do you think today is a sign he’s breaking out and will be a productive hitter again any time now?Thank you for stopping by tonight. We really need to stick together in times like this. Please get home safely. Recycle any cans and bottles. Don’t forget any personal items. Tip your waitstaff.
