Miserly Arsenal face PSG firepower in Champions League style clash
Arsenal have been criticised in some quarters for their approach but it has proven fruitful on the way to the Champions League final (Adrian Dennis)Arsenal's immovable object meets the unstoppable force of Paris Saint-Germain in Saturday's Champions League final offering a pronounced clash of styles.Holders PSG's flowing attack is arguably the continent's most exhilarating, while Mikel Arteta's Arsenal are wedded to a pragmatic approach which ended their 22-year wait to win the Premier League. The Gunners' football this season has not won over many neutrals but after years of nearlys and almosts, Arteta's strategy has paid dividends.Arsenal's consistency beat out Pep Guardiola's Manchester City to be crowned champions of England and led them back to Europe's summit two decades after reaching the 2006 final. In the Champions League Arsenal have conceded only six goals in 14 matches and are unbeaten -- by contrast PSG let in 22 through the tournament."Without the ball, they are the best team in the world," said PSG coach Luis Enrique of the north London side.Arteta's side depends on structure and discipline, seeking to control opponents by stopping them reaching dangerous areas, limiting their shots in the box -- no Premier League team has conceded fewer. The Gunners aggressively press opponents high, seeking to dominate territory, and hate giving the ball away themselves, avoiding risk in their passing. They possess imposing, physical players, from impressive centre-back pairing Gabriel and William Saliba, through the spine of the team, in Declan Rice and imposing strikers Viktor Gyokeres and Kai Havertz. That aids their dead ball mastery, under the cunning eye of set piece coach Nicolas Jover, whom they signed from Manchester City in 2021.Swiss newspaper Blick pondered whether Jover was "ruining football", with the Frenchman reportedly paid a bonus per goal scored via a set piece."We want to be the best and the most dominant team in every aspect of the game," said Arteta, imploring his team to score even more from dead balls. With 27 Premier League goals scored this season from dead ball situations, 38 percent of their total, some have labelled Arsenal 'Set Piece FC'."Every time they get a corner, my head is in my hands," former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher told Sky Sports."I've never seen anything like this before in football."After three consecutive second place finishes, Arsenal recognise winning ugly is better than not winning at all."I don't know how you celebrate one goal different to another -- maybe for YouTube one is nicer than another," said Arteta unperturbed by criticism.Arsenal won seven games 1-0 this season in the Premier League, keeping 19 clean sheets. If teams do penetrate the backline, they must beat David Raya, enjoying a superb season in goal. The Spaniard has matched the record of nine clean sheets in the Champions League. A 10th could secure the trophy.Their struggles from open play, particularly when star winger Bukayo Saka was out injured, frustrated even their own supporters at times.Yet as tens of thousands turned up to celebrate the Premier League title, nobody was complaining. Those joyous scenes outside the Emirates stadium, with some players joining the fans until past five in the morning, allow Arsenal to double down on their approach, particularly against a team as lethal as PSG.- Thriving in chaos -While Arsenal have sometimes lacked star power in attack, opponents PSG boast several electric forwards who thrive in organised chaos and will back themselves to break down the competition's toughest defence.Coach Luis Enrique may have weeded his team of superstars but Ousmane Dembele, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Desire Doue are some of the most dynamic attackers on the planet. The French champions demolish teams in transition with searing pace, helping top scorers PSG net 44 goals in the Champions League, one short of the all-time record of 45.PSG showed their attacking prowess in the first leg of their semi-final tussle with Bayern Munich, edging the German giants 5-4 in an all-timer. Arsenal seek to reduce risk, PSG encourage it."When we can keep the ball and create space, it makes the match easier," said Luis Enrique after his team put five past Chelsea in the last 16 first leg."We showed that we are a real team, unpredictable."They racked up eight goals against the Blues on aggregate, plus six against Bayern Munich and four against Liverpool in the other knockout games. If the final does not follow the script, it will be because Luis Enrique tears it up.In the second leg against Bayern he shifted strategy and denied Vincent Kompany the end-to-end contest he expected in a 1-1 draw."We can't always win with magic or extraordinary play," said Doue. However for the most part PSG, who put five goals past Inter Milan in last season's final, have done just that.Whichever style emerges triumphant will determine who leaves Budapest with the European crown.rbs/iwd

Jalen Williams', Ajay Mitchell's Spurs-Thunder Game 5 statuses revealed
For the first time all year, the thought of the Oklahoma City Thunder being bounced from the NBA playoffs has crept into the heads of most. The reigning NBA champion's health situation didn't improve. Playing every other day in the 2026 Western Conference Finals gives them little room to breathe.Because of that, the Thunder could be short-handed in a pivotal Game 5. Jalen Williams remains questionable with hamstring strain injury management. Ajay Mitchell has already been ruled out for a second consecutive game due to a soleus strain. For those wondering why Williams' designation changed from hamstring soreness to hamstring strain injury management, it's because you can only have someone out for a certain number of games due to soreness. Nothing has actually changed about the injury. Just purely semantics to follow league rules.Uh oh. The Thunder were without Williams and Mitchell in their Game 4 loss to the San Antonio Spurs. It was the most lopsided contest as OKC only put up a measly 82 points. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander only had 19 points and seven assists as they struggled to generate quality halfcourt offense. The Thunder could enter Game 5 under similar circumstances. Williams' status could make or break their chances to get an important 3-2 series lead. If he's out, then good luck to Gilgeous-Alexander and the rest of OKC's role players at generating offense against San Antonio.Just a brutal reminder that you need as much luck as talent to win an NBA championship. Right now, things look bleak for the Thunder if Williams and Mitchell both miss another game together. OKC just doesn't have adequate secondary ball-handlers and go-to scorers to make up the difference. This article originally appeared on OKC Thunder Wire: Jalen Williams', Ajay Mitchell's Spurs-Thunder Game 5 statuses revealed

Tatsuya Imai silences Rangers as Astros throw historic no-hitter in 9-0 rout
Tatsuya Imai silences Rangers as Astros throw historic no-hitter in 9-0 rout originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.Tatsuya Imai’s inauspicious introduction to Major League Baseball may finally be over. So, too, perhaps, is the burden hanging over the Houston Astros as owners of baseball’s worst pitching staff.Imai delivered the finest outing of his young MLB career Monday night at Globe Life Field, spinning six hitless innings before two relievers completed the 18th no-hitter in franchise history during Houston’s emphatic 9-0 victory over the Texas Rangers. The 27-year-old Japanese right-hander entered the game carrying an 8.31 ERA through his first five starts, a rocky beginning that included a stint on the injured list with arm fatigue and growing questions about whether Houston’s prized offseason acquisition could adapt quickly to the majors.Instead, Imai authored a breakthrough performance against a division rival. Though he walked three batters in the first inning, he escaped trouble and settled into a rhythm, retiring 15 of the final 16 hitters he faced. He finished with four walks and two strikeouts across six scoreless innings before handing the game to Houston’s bullpen. Imai Delivers breakthrough performanceLeft-hander Steven Okert navigated the seventh inning before rookie Alimber Santa, making his MLB debut, recorded the final six outs to secure the majors’ first no-hitter since September 2024.Houston entered Monday ranked near the bottom of MLB in team ERA, while Imai had allowed opponents to bat well over .300 against him through May.The Astros’ sudden turnaround has coincided with improved starting pitching, as Houston has now won four consecutive games.Houston’s offense provided ample support. Christian Walker launched a three-run homer during a five-run seventh inning, while Yordan Alvarez added a solo shot and sacrifice fly. Defensive gems from Jeremy Peña and Jake Meyers preserved the no-hit bid throughout the night. For Imai, whose decorated career in Japan made him one of the Astros’ biggest offseason investments, Monday represented more than a historic achievement. It was validation that his electric fastball and poise can translate to the majors after all.

Imai, Pen Combine for No-Hitter as Astros Rout Rangers 9-0
ARLINGTON, TX - MAY 25: Tatsuya Imai #45 of the Houston Astros pitches during the game between the Houston Astros and the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field on Monday, May 25, 2026 in Arlington, Texas. (Photo by Kelcee Skoug/MLB Photos via Getty Images) | MLB Photos via Getty Images Tatsuya Imai (W, 2-2) hurled 6 innings of no-hit ball, Yordan Alvarez and Christian Walker homered and the Houston Astros (24-31) pummeled the Texas Rangers (24-29) 9-0 in the first game of their four-game series at Globe Life Park in Arlington. It’s a huge mark for Imai, who was making his 6th start of the season and whose early tenure with the Astros has been marked with struggle and injury. While his most recent performances have been trending in the right direction, Imai’s line tonight of 6 no-hit shutout innings was easily his best performance of the season. While he walked 4 and struck out 2, he also generated 8 ground ball outs which was very important given his recent penchant for ceding the long ball. Steven Okert pitched the 7th. Alimber Santa set the Rangers down in order over the final 2 innings, punctuated with a strikeout of Brandon Nimmo to end the game. This was Santa’s first appearance with the Astros. The Astros got to Rangers SP Kumar Rocker (L, 2-5) right away in the first. Jeremy Pena was hit by a pitch leading off the game, and then stole 2nd. After advancing to 3rd on a groundout by Isaac Paredes, Yordan Alvarez hit a sacrifice fly to score Pena and make it 1-0 Houston after 1.The Astros would get on the board again in the 4th, when Alvarez led off the inning with his 16th HR of the season. The 415 foot blast to center was hit 110.6 MPH, and gave the Astros a 2-0 lead going to the bottom of the 4th. Houston would get 2 more in the 5th. Zach Dezenzo led off with a walk. Nick Allen then singled to right to put runners on the corners with no out. Christian Vazquez then successfully executed a squeeze bunt to score Dezenzo and increase the lead to 3-0, with Allen advancing to 3rd. Pena would then rip a ground ball single to right to score Allen to make it 4-0 Astros. Houston would break it open in the 7th. Vazquez led off with a single to center, followed by Pena being hit by a pitch for the second time in the game to runners at 1st and 2nd with no out. After Paredes and Alvarez both popped up, Christian Walker launched his 15th HR of the season to left center. The 3-run blast made it a 7-0 lead for the Astros. The next batter, Jake Meyers, would reach on an error by Rangers shortstop Michael Helman. Cam Smith would also reach on an error by Helman, giving the Astros 2 on with 2 out. Brice Matthews then hit a hard single to left to load the bases for Nick Allen. Allen, coming off a 3-for-3 performance in yesterday’s series finale with the Cubs, continued his hot hitting with a 2-run single to left scoring Meyers and Smith and pushing the lead to 9-0. It also capped a 5-run 7th inning for Houston. Allen would finish 2-for-5 with 2 RBI, he is now batting .317. The combined no-hitter is the 18th no-hitter in franchise history and the first no-hitter in MLB since September 2024. It is the first Astros no-hitter since Ronel Blanco’s solo gem April 1, 2024. It is the franchise’s 5th combined no-hitter, and first since Cristian Javier led a combined no-hitter against the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 4 of the 2022 World Series at Citizens Bank Park.Jason Alexander (1-0, 7.30 ERA) will get the start tomorrow as the Astros look to continue their march towards the 2026 Silver Boot and back towards .500. Houston has now won 4 straight and 7 of their last 10.

Reeling Mets fall back to 10 games under .500 with Memorial Day loss: ‘It’s not early anymore’
How quickly things change. The last time the Mets were home they capped off their best stretch of the season with a thrilling come-from-behind win to lock up the first-half of the Subway Series. A struggling offense showed some much-needed signs of life, signaling perhaps that they were finally ready to make a dent in the gapping hole they put themselves in. However, a much different club returned to Citi Field on Monday. With Juan Soto sidelined again with an illness those bats have quickly returned to their sluggish form, as they dropped their fourth consecutive game with a 7-2 loss to the Reds. Unlike their sweep at the hands of the Marlins to begin the week, they were able to generate some traffic this afternoon, but that still didn’t lead to runs, as they finished 0-for-6 as a team with RISP. Bumped up to the cleanup spot, Marcus Semien broke a three-game homerless drought with a solo shot in the sixth, that was just one of three extra base-hits on the afternoon. As a result, New York finished with two or less runs for the fifth straight game. "We can sit here and make excuses with some of the guys we’re missing, but we have big-league hitters here and they are struggling," Carlos Mendoza said. "We're having a hard time putting rallies together, and the biggest thing is our inability to drive the ball out of the park -- look at a night like tonight, we had nine hits but two runs -- it’s hard to score three or four by just singles, you gotta be able to drive the ball out of the ballpark.”Just like that, any signs of May momentum have quickly been swept away. With losses in six of their last seven games, the Mets are now back to 10 games under .500 and remain in the basement of the NL East at the 1/3 mark of the season.“It sucks,” Mendoza said. “I’ve been saying it, it’s not early anymore -- we’re not putting ourselves in a good position obviously, we gotta do out and do it.”

Expansion Portland Fire hand New York 3rd straight loss with 81-74 victory
NEW YORK (AP) — Sarah Ashlee Barker scored all seven of her points in a fourth quarter run to lift the Portland Fire to an 81-74 win over the New York Liberty on Monday night.Trailing 65-60, midway through the fourth quarter, Portland (4-3) scored 12 straight points with Barker leading the way to go up 72-65. She hit a layup and then a 3-pointer that made it 67-65 — Portland's first lead since early in the third quarter.New York, which was missing star guard Sabrina Ionescu, could only get within 74-71 on two free throws by Breanna Stewart with just over 29 seconds left. Carla Leite answered with a 3-pointer with 13.7 seconds left to put the Fire up six. She finished with 18 points to lead the team. New York never could get within striking distance the rest of the way.The loss was the third straight for New York (3-4), which was led by Stewart's 25 points. The Liberty trailed 35-33 at the half before getting the offense going in the third quarter behind Stewart and Marine Johannes. The French guard had a spectacular play midway through the third when she dribbled away from the basket toward halfcourt and then threw a backward pass over her head to Jonquel Jones for a layup and foul that made it 47-40. The Liberty led 57-49 after three quarters, but fell apart in the fourth.Neither team could get into a real rhythm in the first half as Portland was up by two at the break. The Fire had a balanced offense with Leite leading the way with eight points. Johannes had 11 points for New YorkSatou Sabally played the first four minutes of the game before picking up two fouls and going back to the locker room with an illness. She didn't return. Sabally, who played for the first time this season on Thursday, was a huge offseason free agent pick up by the Liberty. She had suffered a concussion in Game 3 of the WNBA Finals last season when she played with Phoenix and was still dealing with lingering effects from it in the offseason. This was the third and final meeting between the teams this season with all three matchups coming within the first seven games.Up nextFire return home to face Connecticut on Wednesday.Liberty host Phoenix for a two-game set starting Wednesday.___AP WNBA: https://apnews.com/hub/wnba-basketball

Bayern Munich becomes first ever German club to record men’s and women’s doubles in same season
BERLIN, GERMANY - MAY 23: Manuel Neuer of FC Bayern Munich lifts the DFB Cup Trophy as the team celebrates following victory during the DFB Cup Final 2026 match between FC Bayern München and VfB Stuttgart at Olympiastadion on May 23, 2026 in Berlin, Germany. (Photo by Alex Grimm/Getty Images) | Getty Images Bayern Munich’s men and women both had quite the season to remember, both recording domestic doubles in the same season. The women’s team kicked things off first by winning the DFB-Pokal against VfL Wolfsburg with a commanding 4-0 victory, before polishing off their third invincible Bundesliga season a few days later. Meanwhile, the men’s team had to wait a week until their own Pokal final against VfB Stuttgart, long after thei had secured the Bundesliga title. They made no mistake and sealed the win with a 3-0 victory in Berlin, courtesy of a hat trick from Harry Kane. The respective results mean that Bayern won domestic doubles in the men’s and women’s department in the same season for the first time not only in club history, but also in Bundesliga history. This feat is quite rare in other European top leagues as well, with only Olympique Lyon/Lyonnes and FC Barcelona having achieved it other than Bayern. The Bayern men and women also mirrored each other in their other competitions, both winning the German Supercup, quite coincidentally against their Pokal final opponents. The men won the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup against Stuttgart, while the women won the DFB-Supercup against Wolfsburg. Not only that, but both teams also reached the Champions League semifinals, with the women narrowly losing out to eventual winners Barcelona. Whether the men will have lost to the eventual winners remains to be seen, as Paris Saint-Germain face off against Arsenal in the final on Saturday.Regardless of their Champions League exits, though, both the Bayern Männer and Frauen had excellent seasons, and deserve all the praise they can get. The two sides will now break for a short while until their respective national team call-ups, with the men gearing up for the World Cup.

Restaurants, residents ready for the World Cup in Foxborough
There’s less than three weeks to go until the first World Cup match takes over Foxborough and surrounding areas. Local businesses and residents say they’re ready for the excitement.“I’m really excited about the culture that’s gonna come around the area,” Cameron Pelletier, a man who lives in the area, said.“It’s gonna be chaotic but it’s gonna be worth it,” Katya Demelo, a woman who lives nearby, said. Many said they’re looking forward to getting in on the fun from Boston to Foxborough however they can. “We tried to look for tickets... a little bit out of the price range, but it’s okay, we’re gonna be in the area, make the best of it,” Demelo said. “I’m gonna try to score some last second tickets, if possible,” Pelletier said. While many have expressed traffic being a concern before and after matches, they’re not letting it stop them from enjoying the moment. “I know it’s gonna be a lot of traffic but honestly it’s a great opportunity,” Pelletier said.“It’s once in a lifetime type of opportunity,” Demelo said. Businesses in the area said they’re preparing for it as best they can. Some restaurants said they’ll even be switching up their menu items to cater to the global stage they’ll be serving. “For each game there will be food from the countries that are gonna be here. So, the first game is gonna be Haiti versus Scotland, so we’ll have a dish from both Haiti and from Scotland as well as drink specials from both countries,” Alex Borges, front of house manager at Estella, said.Borges said they hired 10 new staff members at Estella Patriot Place to make sure they have enough cooks, bartenders, and servers on hand to handle the crowds. At Citizen Crust, Ashlee Morin, a manager, said they’re planning to do the same. “Hopefully it will remind them of home, that’s the goal,” Morin said.Along with the extra staff, extra beer will be on hand to make sure glasses stay full.“We’ll probably be bringing in hundreds of cases of beer every single week just to make sure that there’s plenty to go around,” Borges said. But they all remain confident they can handle the crowds.“We’ve done three days of Taylor Swift, we’ve done home playoff games, it’s really nothing different than that, this is what we’re used to,” Morin said. The Knicks keep adding numbers to their historic run, which has taken them to the NBA Finals
The NBA Finals won't start until June 3, so the schedule will do something that the Atlanta Hawks, Philadelphia 76ers and Cleveland Cavaliers could not in recent weeks. It'll prevent the New York Knicks from winning. For a few days, anyway. The Knicks are headed to the NBA Finals, and they're headed there on a roll like few others in league history. New York finished off a four-game sweep of the Eastern Conference finals on Monday night, beating the Cavaliers 130-93 — and extending its winning streak to 11 games.Knicks coach Mike Brown deferred all the credit to the players.“They're just great, great human beings and they're obviously fantastic basketball players,” Brown said. The Knicks beat the Hawks in six games in Round 1, then swept Philly in Round 2 and Cleveland for the East title. And now, the Knicks wait for either Oklahoma City or San Antonio. The Western Conference champion won't be crowned until Thursday at the earliest, and the winner of that Thunder-Spurs series will play host to the Knicks in Game 1 of the NBA Finals next week.An 11-game streak going into the FinalsThe Knicks, who haven't lost since April 23 (they actually trailed the Hawks 2-1 in that first-round series after back-to-back one-point losses), are now in a very small club of teams heading into the title round on this kind of winning streak.Only three other teams — the Los Angeles Lakers in 1989, the Lakers again in 2001 and Golden State in 2017 — have been on postseason winning streaks of at least 11 games going into the NBA Finals. The Lakers went 11-0 in the first three rounds of the playoffs (the first round was best-of-five then) in 1989 before getting swept by Detroit in the finals. The 2001 Lakers also were 11-0 in the first three rounds, then lost Game 1 of the finals to Philadelphia, then swept the rest of that series on the way to the title. And Golden State was 12-0 in Rounds 1-3 in 2017, then won the first three games of the finals against Cleveland — getting to 15-0 for the playoffs — before falling in Game 4 of the finals and finishing it off in Game 5.The biggest point differential in an 11-game spanNew York isn't just winning. It is winning big. Really big.The Knicks have outscored opponents by 262 points in this 11-game winning streak. It's the most lopsided 11-game span in NBA history — regular season or playoffs.Boston outscored teams by 243 points in an 11-game stretch in 2024. Milwaukee had 11-game spans where it outscored teams by 230, 231 and 236 points (with some overlap during two of those streaks) in 1970-71.Those Celtics and those Bucks went on to win NBA titles in those seasons. The Knicks' average point differential in its pre-Finals playoff rounds this season was 19.4 points per game. The previous best in all rounds combined before the title round was a 16.3-point differential per game by Golden State in 2017.Most dominant road playoff run ... ever? The Knicks have won six consecutive road playoff games by double digits. No team in NBA history has ever had such a streak in the postseason. They've won those games by a staggering 161 combined points. The previous mark for consecutive double-digit road playoff wins was five, done twice — by Miami in 2013 (by a combined 75 points) and Golden State in 2017 (by a combined 88 points). Both of those clubs won NBA titles in those seasons.___AP NBA: https://apnews.com/nba

Antioch (Calif.) offensive tackle George Tyus won’t have to go far for college.[ $19.99 gets you a FULL year of On3 | Rivals national coverage ]The big East Bay offensive lineman committed to Stanford on his official visit to the Farm. With a visit set next month for Big Game rival Cal, Tyus decided to go to the other side of the Bay to play for the Cardinal.“I felt like I fit in in the offensive lineman room,” said Tyus. “They run a similar offense to my school. Its a perfect fit offensively. Plus, I value academics and it’s a great academic school. I spent time with the players and it felt like home.”Spending time with head coach Tavita Pritchard, offensive line coach Keli’i Kekuewa and general manager Andrew Luck also ensured Tyus where he wanted to be.“Coach Keli’i is a pretty cool guy,” said Tyus. “He gave me a presentation and broke it down and compared it to the NFL players. It was pretty cool. He’s a great man. He met my sisters and my family and it was pretty cool. I felt like I’ve known him a long time. Coach Luck, he’s a pretty energetic man. He treated me with respect and everything and he’s making Stanford in to something. I like how he’s taking care of everything and he made a good impression with my family. Coach Pritchard, he’s a great man too and I feel like he’s pretty cool too and he gave a great impression to my family and I value that too. I know that he and Andrew Luck can do something special and change Stanford.”Tyus said the overall package of football plus academics was too good to pass up.“I know football doesn’t go on forever, and hopefully nothing happens, but if I got injured, I know football won’t always be there but a degree from Stanford will set you up for life,” said Tyus. “Football is a key to a great education.”Staying in Northern California wasn’t anything Tyus set out for, but it’s an added bonus.“I didn’t mind if I stayed home or not, I just wanted a program with good academics and good development and I found that at Stanford,” said Tyus. “But it’s good to be home.”Tyus said he won’t take his scheduled official visit to Cal next month. And because he does track and wrestles, he wants to continue that his senior year, so doesn’t plan to graduate early and enroll in January.“Going in to my senior year, I knew I was going to commit before the season, but now I can focus on football and wrestling and finish wrestling and track and just graduate normal time,” said Tyus.Tyus is a three-star according to the Rivals Industry Ranking, an equally weighted average that utilizes all three major recruiting services.Rivals ranks him as the No. 97 offensive tackle nationally and the No. 95 recruit in California in 2027.

Relentless Knicks sweep Cavaliers to return to NBA finals for first time since 1999
The New York Knicks hold the Eastern Conference Championship trophy after sweeping the Cleveland Cavaliers. Photograph: Tim Phillis/APThe New York Knicks are back in the NBA finals for the first time since 1999 after another overwhelming victory completed a 4-0 sweep of the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference finals. The Knicks are in ruthless form as they attempt to win their first NBA championship since 1973. They also swept the Philadelphia 76ers in the Eastern Conference semi-finals and beat the Atlanta Hawks 4-2 in the first round of the playoffs. While their path to the finals in their Eastern Conference has been smooth they will face a stiff test to claim the NBA title. They will face either the reigning champion Oklahoma City Thunder, a team with very few flaws, or the San Antonio Spurs, led by 7ft 4in superstar Victor Wembanyama. The Spurs-Thunder series is tied at 2-2 with Game 5 on Tuesday night. For now though, the Knicks can rest up and look back on an excellent series against the Cavaliers after completing the sweep with a 130-93 win. Cleveland only seriously threatened the Knicks in the opening game of the East finals, when they held a 22-point lead in the fourth quarter, before Jalen Brunson inspired New York to a thrilling comeback win in overtime. The Knicks won the next three games by 16, 13 and 37 points and are on an 11-game winning streak.Brunson, whose father Rick played for the Knicks the last time they reached the finals, has been the star of the series but paid tribute to the rest of the Knicks after Monday night’s game.“It means a lot [to get to the finals], but I wouldn’t be here without my teammates,” Brunson said on the ESPN broadcast. “My coach, this staff, the fanbase, without them none of this is possible.”Brunson was also awarded the Larry Bird Trophy as the Eastern Conference finals MVP.“[Brunson’s leadership] is vital for us,” said Josh Hart of his teammate. “He’s an even keel, he doesn’t let us get too high or too low. Even games like this when we’re up 15 or 20, he wants to make sure we’re doubling down on our habits.”The Knicks’ presence will bring plenty of attention to this year’s finals. On Monday, several of their celebrity fans, including Spike Lee and Timothée Chalamet, made the journey to Cleveland to see them complete their victory.

Knicks headed to NBA Finals for first time since 1999 after 43-point blowout to sweep Cavaliers
Latrell Spreewell. Allan Houston. Marcus Camby. Larry Johnson. Charlie Ward. Jeff Van Gundy as coach. The last time the New York Knicks were in the NBA Finals, 27 years ago, those were the legendary names (Patrick Ewing helped get them there, but was out with a torn Achilles). Now the names that will go down in Knicks history are Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, Mikal Bridges, OG Anunoby and others. Mike Brown, who was brought in with a finals-or-bust mandate as coach, has delivered. The entire team delivered on Monday, as they have for a few weeks and a few series now. Once again, New York ran Cleveland out of its own building, this time in a 126-83 blowout win that saw the Knicks sweep the Cavaliers out of the playoffs and themselves into the Finals.New York heads to the Finals for the first time since 1999, riding an historic 11-game winning streak, as everything with the Knicks has clicked at the right time. They will get more than a week off to rest and recover as the NBA Finals don't start until June 3, with Game 1 either in Oklahoma City or San Antonio, depending on who comes out of the Western Conference Finals (that series is tied 2-2 heading into a critical Game 5 on Tuesday night).Cleveland heads into an offseason with a lot of questions — including whether Donovan Mitchell will sign an extension to stay beyond next season. This team was the top seed in the East a season ago but lost in the second round of the playoffs. Then, this season, traded for James Harden mid-season to improve their chances, made the Eastern Conference Finals but were out-everythinged by the Knicks. It's going to force a summer of harsh evaluations for the most expensive team in the NBA.For a brief few minutes to start Game 4, there was a glimmer of hope for the outnumbered — at least it sounded like it — Cavaliers fans in their home arena. A desperate Cleveland team started the game on an 8-2 run, and midway through the first quarter the Cavaliers still led by one. Then Game 4 turned into essentially a replay of Game 3. Cleveland missed contested looks while New York hit open ones — or scored in transition. Knicks' role players could not miss, starting with Landry Shamet off the bench. The Knicks' 26 first-half fast-break points were the most by any team in the playoffs in the last 30 years (stat via ESPN). New York was executing on a level Cleveland could not match on both ends of the court and that turned into a 20-0 run that thrilled the Knicks faithful.20-0 RUN FOR THE KNICKS New York leads by 26 in Q2 of Game 4! pic.twitter.com/ePCyrDIVNF— NBA (@NBA) May 26, 2026Cleveland pretty much rolled over from there, any runs the Cavaliers made was simply because the Knicks hit a cold stretch.New York spread the scoring around. Towns led the scoring with 19 points, Anunoby had 16, Shamet remained hot off the bench with 16 points on 5-of-6 shooting, while Bridges and Brunson had 15 points but both were a little cold from the floor. Not that it mattered.Mitchell showed up and played hard, at least on offense, scoring 31 on 9-of-18 shooting. He was also frustrated on the bench because of the effort his team gave on Monday night, and that's going to lead to even more questions this summer. The only question the Knicks face is how to spend the next week until the NBA Finals start.

Donovan Mitchell's fiery Game 4 speech to dejected Cavs bench is so sad
When you look back at the Cleveland Cavaliers' Eastern Conference Finals series loss to the New York Knicks, you can at least say superstar Donovan Mitchell tried. Monday's Game 4 loss to the Knicks at home sent the Cavs out of the 2026 NBA playoffs with so many questions to answer for the future. However, Mitchell as the franchise's foundation isn't in question. Mitchell gave it his all during the four-game Knicks sweep, even to the point of giving his team an impassioned speech during a time out. The tough part is that the entire Cavs bench just looks too dejected for it to work. Mitchell is one of the best players in the NBA, and he clearly wanted to fight to the bitter end. However, his teammates just didn't seem into it at all. Unfortunately, Mitchell's fire was probably just too late. pic.twitter.com/JNNJaHkUm4— Kristian Winfield (@Krisplashed) May 26, 2026Man, this stinks to see for Mitchell and the Cavs. This video is going to sting for a long, long time in the Land. The Thunder have run into a big problem. What's the fix against the Spurs?
Oklahoma City has a problem. A very big problem. Not in the literal sense — it’s not suddenly doom and gloom for the defending champs simply because the Western Conference finals are tied 2-2 — but the Thunder are having a hard time figuring out their double-big lineups against an elite opponent. And this isn’t the first time. Isaiah Hartenstein and Chet Holmgren have played just 36 out of 192 possible minutes together this series, which equates to a little under 20% of the time. If this sounds familiar, it’s because it is; during last year’s Finals, the tandem shared the floor for about 11% of the time. When they’ve been on the floor together, things haven’t quite worked out: Oklahoma City has been outscored by 36 points over 68 possessions. That’s hard to do in such a short amount of time. The Thunder’s struggles pairing two skilled big men together, putting an emphasis on size in a series that demands skill, are unfortunate considering the timing. During the regular season, Oklahoma City was a monstrous +21 points per 100 possessions with both Hartenstein and Holmgren on the floor. But this isn’t early December or mid-March. Series have been won and lost because teams fail to properly diagnose and solve issues that arise within the duration of a matchup. Playoffs are very interesting because at some point in the series it stops being about how good your team is and...can you solve this very specific thing right now.— Steve Jones (@stevejones20) April 23, 2023In a vacuum, the tradeoffs for leaning on two 7-footers are obvious. The Thunder have excelled on the glass during these playoffs (in the 99th percentile of offensive rebounding rate when Hartenstein and Holmgren are on the floor), done a solid job of deterring opponents from taking shots at the rim, and punished the teams that have dared to drive that far, allowing opponents to shoot just 55% at the rim. But the drawbacks are also glaring. Head coach Mark Daigneault publicly apologized to Hartenstein for playing him just 12 minutes in Game 1 (he then played 18 in Game 4), but the spacing concerns are real. Hartenstein is a talented center that is an underrated screen setter, passer and cutter, but against a Spurs defense seeking to channel actions toward the middle of the floor, it’s been a tough task trying to generate decent shots. Consider this: with both Hartenstein and Holmgren on the floor, Oklahoma City’s shot quality is equivalent to Sacramento’s regular-season output (not great), it’s taking 3s at a rate less than the aforementioned Kings and it has an effective field goal (and true shooting) percentage of 40%. It gets even worse when you consider the Thunder’s availability issues. Oklahoma City has been lauded for its depth all year and rightfully so, but recent injuries to Jalen Williams and Ajay Mitchell have forced others to the surface in ways they may not have anticipated prior to the series. Those ghastly Holmgren/Hartenstein numbers get even worse with Cason Wallace being inserted into the starting lineup, their net rating plummeting to a -61.9 and their rim protection worsening by nearly 12%. Is there a fix? Similar to last year’s playoffs, Daigneault’s best bet might be to separate the two. So far, it’s worked when the Thunder have either Holmgren (+15.4 in net rating) on the floor without Hartenstein as well as the inverse (+17 with Hartenstein and no Holmgren). There’s also the glaring fact that Holmgren, who was recently named to the All-NBA Third Team, isn’t playing at that level. In the conference finals, the 24-year-old is averaging just 11.3 points, 6.0 rebounds and less than a block a game on 47/33/75 shooting splits. (Defensively, he’s contested the most shots around the rim in the conference finals to date, with opponents converting just 42.9% of shots, a more impressive mark than Victor Wembanyama and a more drastic on/off switch.) In Game 4, Holmgren shot just 2-of-5 from the field with Wembanyama on the floor and simply doesn’t look like the confident, versatile unicorn that has been a staple of the Thunder’s success. Figuring out how to best involve him and extract All-NBA performances (or at least close to it at this point) even appeared to stump the reigning MVP for a moment. This got me crying bro pic.twitter.com/fsIIwYk37K— kingtisemedia (@kingtisemedia) May 25, 2026“Chet’s an easy target to find,” Gilgeous-Alexander said after a long pause. “So, probably just find him more in the dunker or when he's spacing. Just put him in better positions to use his strengths as an offensive talent.“I don’t know exactly what that looks like — I just got done playing — but watching film, we’ll find ways for sure.”Getting Williams back for Game 5 — he’s listed as questionable — would return some much-needed inside-out balance to their starting lineup and could justify the continued run of the Holmgren/Hartenstein frontcourt. But in a series dictated by chess moves and to-the-second adjustments, the Thunder could use a jolt.

7 WTA players who could derail Coco Gauff’s French Open title defense
Coco Gauff has done something that only the very best tennis players manage to do. At 22, she is the defending French Open champion and the player every other woman in the draw is trying to figure out. Her 2025 title run was not a fluke or a lucky draw. She beat the best players in the world across two weeks, closed it out against Aryna Sabalenka in the final, and did it all without looking like she was playing at her absolute limit. That is what made it so intimidating. But the 2026 field is different. Iga Swiatek has been quietly building back toward her best clay-court form after a difficult stretch. Sabalenka arrived in Paris as the world number one, motivated by a final that she has described as the worst match of her career. Rome champion Elina Svitolina just beat Swiatek in the Italian Open semifinals and is playing the best clay court tennis of her life. Elena Rybakina is seeded second and is the one player in the draw who wins ugly and wins anyway. Jelena Ostapenko and Marta Kostyuk bring unpredictability and firepower that no defending champion can afford to take lightly. And Mirra Andreeva is 19 years old and scared of nobody.MORE: French Open Champions of the last decade, from Rafael Nadal to Carlos AlcarazGauff can win this tournament again. The talent is there, and so is the confidence that comes with having already done it. But the margin for error in 2026 is thinner than it was twelve months ago, and at least seven players have a credible, specific case for why they could be the one to end her Paris reign before the final is even reached.Iga SwiatekMar 11, 2026; Indian Wells, CA, USA; Iga Swiatek (POL) reacts as she defeated Karolina Muchova (CZE) during the fourth round in the BNP Paribas Open at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. Mandatory Credit: Jayne Kamin-Oncea-Imagn ImagesSwiatek is the most dangerous player on clay in the history of women’s tennis and her case needs no elaboration. She is seeded third, has won Roland Garros four times, and owns a head-to-head record over Gauff that includes multiple brutal straight-set dismissals at this exact tournament. Her 2026 clay season has been inconsistent, including a retirement against Ann Li due to illness, but she won in Rome before the tournament and arrived in Paris with momentum. When Swiatek is right on this surface, there is no one in the world who can beat her, including Gauff.Aryna SabalenkaAryna Sabalenka celebrates winning the first break point of the third set, taking a 2-1 lead over Elena Rybakina in the women’s singles championship final at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, Calif., Sunday, March 15, 2026.Sabalenka is the world number one and the top seed, and she arrived at Roland Garros as the favorite despite losing to Gauff in last year’s final. Her clay season has been mixed, reaching the quarterfinal in Madrid but falling early in Rome, and her own admission that Swiatek would have beaten Gauff had she won their semifinal last year is a reminder of how close the margins were. She hits the ball harder than anyone else in the draw, and if she finds her best tennis in the second week, Gauff will need to play flawlessly to survive.Elina SvitolinaMar 12, 2026; Indian Wells, CA, USA; Elina Svitolina (UKR) celebrates as she defeated Iga Swiatek (POL) in her quarterfinal match during the BNP Paribas Open at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. Mandatory Credit: Jayne Kamin-Oncea-Imagn ImagesSvitolina won in Rome the week before Roland Garros began, beating three top contenders, including Swiatek in the semifinals, which is about as good a form guide as anyone could ask for heading into a Grand Slam. She has never reached the Roland Garros semifinals, but the 2026 clay season suggests that ceiling is no longer accurate. Her head-to-head with Swiatek now sits at 3-4 after winning their last two meetings, and Gauff has never faced a Svitolina playing at this level.Elena RybakinaElena Rybakina defeated Jessica Pegula 6-1, 7-6(4) in their BNP Paribas Open quarterfinal match on Stadium 1 at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, Calif., on Thursday, March 12, 2026.Rybakina is seeded second and is the most underrated threat in the entire draw. Her serve is the most difficult to read on tour, her backhand is a genuine weapon on clay, and she has the composure to win big points in big moments without showing any emotion whatsoever. Her path to a potential semifinal includes Mirra Andreeva and potentially Swiatek, which is a gauntlet, but if she gets through, she has the game to beat anyone left standing.Jelena OstapenkoAug 27, 2025; Flushing, NY, USA; Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia in action against Taylor Townsend of the United States in the second round of the women’s singles at the US Open at Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Mandatory Credit: Mike Frey-Imagn ImagesOstapenko is the wildcard that nobody wants to face in the second week at Roland Garros, the tournament she won in 2017 as an unseeded player by hitting through and past everyone she faced. Her flat, heavy ball-striking does not give opponents time to settle, and on a fast clay day at Philippe Chatrier, she is capable of dismantling any player in the draw inside 90 minutes. Gauff has handled big hitters before, but Ostapenko’s particular brand of aggression is unlike anything else on tour.Marta KostyukAug 30, 2025; Flushing, NY, USA; Marta Kostyuk (UKR) hits a forehand against Diane Parry (FRA) (not pictured) on day seven of the 2025 US Open tennis championships at Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Mandatory Credit: Geoff Burke-Imagn ImagesKostyuk has been one of the most improved players on the WTA tour through the clay season and brings an aggressive baseline game that suits Roland Garros conditions. She hits the ball cleanly off both wings, does not give away free points, and has the mental edge that comes from having nothing to lose against a defending champion. If she gets a draw that keeps the top seeds away until the quarterfinals, she is the kind of player who could quietly become the biggest problem in the bracket.Mirra AndreevaMar 9, 2026; Indian Wells, CA, USA; Mirra Andreeva (RUS) gestures to her coach’s box during her third round match against Katerina Siniakova (CZE) in the BNP Paribas Open at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. Mandatory Credit: Jayne Kamin-Oncea-Imagn ImagesAndreeva is 19 years old, reached the Roland Garros semifinals in 2024 at 17, and has positioned herself as one of the most dangerous players in the bottom half of the draw. She plays with the fearlessness that only very young players can sustain, retrieves everything, and has the shot-making to go toe-to-toe with any player in the world on clay. Power rankings from several outlets have her as high as fourth heading into the tournament, which reflects just how seriously the tennis world is taking her this fortnight.

'Coach Dent' sticks to comments about not playing pro basketball ... for now
On the court, Donovan Dent can read the floor like no other.Off the court, the California kid who proved to be one of the best UNM Lobo point guards of all time still needs some work on reading the room. He just doesn’t seem to get how many people are so interested in what he’s doing.Take Saturday, for instance. The 6-foot-2 point guard, who finished his senior season in March at UCLA and recently moved back to Albuquerque, announced on Saturday he would host an inexpensive ($25) pop-up kids camp at ABC Prep Basketball Academy in Old Town."I was expecting like roughly 25 to 30 kids," said Dent.Monday morning, 120 kids showed up, many with Lobo fan parents, to catch a glimpse of, and three hours of working out with, the Lobo great now known by some as “Coach Dent.”"I never expected this," he said with a big smile after the camp concluded, and after he’d signed any and every autograph and took pictures with kids and parents alike. He just couldn't quite figure out why so many wanted to come to his camp. Also on Saturday, and certainly the more newsworthy part of the weekend for those outside of Albuquerque, Dent seemed to think nobody would be all that interested in what he told the Journal about his plans to get into basketball training and coaching rather than pursuing a professional playing career.Yeah, he was fairly oblivious as to that being some information the college basketball world might latch onto."My phone started blowing up on Sunday about whether I was still playing or not and I couldn't figure out why," Dent said Monday. "I guess it was because of the article. It was crazy."As the news started to spread Saturday and then into Sunday about Dent's comments in Saturday's Journal article — posted online Saturday, in print on Sunday — Dent was, at least initially, oblivious to it all. Many Los Angeles-based and national media began citing sources close to Dent that the point guard was retiring. Some cited the Journal. Others just posted the information to their social media accounts without any indication where they learned about it.To be clear, here is what Dent — a source as close to Dent as the Journal could find for this story — told the Journal on Saturday: "I'm done with pro basketball. That's why I came back here. I want to give back to the youth and I want to start training. I want to start working in individual training, group sessions, things like that and I want to get started on that out here (in Albuquerque) — young kids, older kids, just help them with their game and I wanted to start it here because Albuquerque gave me so much."So, he did.He held his first camp on Monday, has another, larger one in Albuquerque July 13-15, and will also host camps in Farmington, Santa Fe and Las Cruces over the next couple months. The lucrative UCLA experience — reportedly $3 million in total revenue share and NIL compensation to play one season for the Bruins — afforded Dent the luxury of pursuing his next step in the game before most players get that chance.Sure, maybe people should have noticed he wasn't taking part in any pre-NBA Draft team workouts or combines, but still, when you hear a guy with lucrative playing opportunities out there isn't going to pursue them, it's going to get some buzz. And to be clear, Dent does still train daily and is staying in top shape. And he will be playing in the $2 million, winner-take-all TBT (The Basketball Tournament) in July as the captain of The Enchantment, a primarily UNM Lobo alumni team (there are also a couple NM State Aggies playing and a couple of players with New Mexico ties who didn't play for either UNM or NMSU).So, is he really done playing basketball? Is that "R" word that so many used over the past 48 hours to describe his status in basketball ("retire" never appeared in a Dent quote or in the Journal's article on his decision to get into coaching and training) an accurate one in Dent's mind? The Journal asked again on Monday in response to all the social media chatter, if he really meant it.More specifically: "Is there a chance that one day you’ll still play basketball at a professional level?""I don't know, I haven't thought about that," Dent said. "All I'm thinking about right now is doing what I'm doing right now (at the kids camp), and that's not a pro career. So, I guess people can say I'm retired as of right now."OK, then. Nice and clear. As for the camp...First off, Dent after the camp said there were 93 kids in attendance. Turns out that was just the online number he saw. Some in-person paying campers — a couple dozen, in fact — pushed the total to 120, according to Brandon Mason, President of ABC Prep where the camp was held in Old Town and where several current and former Lobos regularly work out and train in the offseason. That number has included Dent over the past year when not at UCLA.The camp was controlled chaos — probably a few too many kids for that setup than ideal, but certainly a learning moment for all — and got handled, as Dent noted, thanks to so many of the players and coaches at ABC Prep. Those included prep star Brandon Mason Jr., a top-70 nationally ranked high school recruit for the Class of 2027, and Bella Hines, the Albuquerque native who was a top 100 recruit last year, played this past season at LSU and has transferred to TCU.As for the kids in the camp? It was everything Dent could have hoped for."Absolutely, it made me so happy," Dent said. "I appreciate everyone who came out today, especially on short notice. They had high energy, everyone just had a lot of fun. That's all I can ask for. It was a great time out here."Reach Geoff Grammer at ggrammer@abqjournal.com or follow him on Twitter (X) @GeoffGrammer.

When are the 2026 NBA Finals? Full schedule as Knicks advance
Praise Danhausen! The New York Knicks are going to the NBA Finals! After more than two decades of pain, suffering and way too much time thinking the Stephon Marbury trade would right the franchise's ship, the Knicks have returned to the NBA Finals. All that's left for them to do is wait to see who they'll face.In the West, the San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder are duking it out in a series for the ages. Whoever emerges victorious will undoubtedly be the favorite to hoist the Larry O'Brien Trophy when all is said and done, but the Knicks shouldn't be counted out entirely. Their 11 straight postseason victories are the most in franchise history, and tied for the third-longest such streak in league history with the 1989 and 2001 Los Angeles Lakers.Momentum matters a whole lot when it comes to the NBA postseason, which is why it could be a disadvantage for the Knicks to have to wait so long following their victory in the Eastern Conference finals. This soccer phenom is ready to soar. Faith and family keep him grounded
Real Salt Lake midfielder Zavier Gozo poses for a portrait at America First Field in Sandy after team practice on Friday, May 1, 2026. | Isaac Hale, Deseret News It’s 1:30 p.m. on a Friday. Zavier Gozo opens the door behind his mom, Esther Gozo, in their Eagle Mountain, Utah, home. For the past half hour, Esther and I have been speaking over Zoom about how her son became one of the most talked-about names in American soccer. Zavier, who is just 19, says hello to me before hugging his mother goodbye. He is about to leave for Texas to play in Real Salt Lake’s game against FC Dallas the next day. But he couldn’t leave without telling Esther goodbye. Esther Gozo wishes her son safe travels and asks if he has everything he needs. He does. “Love you, bud,” she says as he walks away. If life goes Zavier Gozo’s way, this type of scene could soon be playing out in Europe. The Utah-born phenom could be hugging his mother goodbye before heading off to play matches for his new Champions League team — in stadiums double to quadruple the size of Real Salt Lake’s America First Field and with the sport’s most prestigious players. At just 19, Gozo is the leading goal scorer for his hometown Major League Soccer club. His coach calls him the team’s “golden child” who plays with an “unwavering belief in himself.” His acrobatic goals go viral. Some soccer pundits and fans demanded the “uncapped teen” represent the U.S. at next month’s World Cup, though he reportedly didn’t make the cut. He’s been garnering the interest of Champions League teams. Real Salt Lake’s Zavier Gozo smiles and fans cheer after he scored a goal as they and Club America play in the Leagues Cup Phase One at America First Field in Sandy on Wednesday, July 30, 2025. | Scott G Winterton, Deseret News But Zavier Gozo believes he’s “much more than just a soccer player.”“I think first of all, I’m a child of God and that’s what I’m here to be,” the teenager told me while sitting in the east stands of America First Field after training earlier this month, still dressed in his gray training kit. “And I’m here to help people and share his light and share his word.” I feel like my only love was soccer.Zavier GozoUpbringing and journey to Real Salt LakeZavier Gozo stands barefoot on the grass of one of Real’s practice fields in Herriman, Utah. The fearless winger isn’t playing, but he has a soccer ball at his feet as he watches teammates scrimmage. A whistle signals the end of training. Gozo — still barefoot — dribbles over and sends a shot into the empty goal. The relationship between Zavier Gozo and a soccer ball has always been magnetic. “My dad was a coach, so he kind of groomed me to be a soccer player for sure,” Gozo said. “I feel like my only love was soccer.”His middle name — “Didier” — pays homage to the Ivorian great Didier Drogba, whose Chelsea jersey Gozo used to sleep in. He started playing rec soccer in West Valley, Utah, at just 3 years old. At his first game, his oversized T-shirt/jersey went down to his knees. He was so happy to have his own little shin guards and cleats, Esther Gozo recalled. In that first game, Zavier scored all the goals, according to his father, Alban Gozo, who recalls asking the coach to take his son out of the game for a few minutes to give the other kids a chance. You could tell that there was something there.Andrew MayAt age 14, Zavier Gozo joined Real Salt Lake Academy, the MLS team’s residential youth soccer development program. “You could tell that there was something there,” said his former academy head coach, Andrew May. “He was very relentless in his training.”The intrinsic motivation Gozo possessed was evident even at the academy, and May knew that “the ceiling was going to be very high for him.”In his first season, some of Gozo’s teammates were called up to play for the Real Monarchs, Real Salt Lake’s reserve MLS NEXT Pro team. But Gozo was not.“Let’s not fast track this,” May recalled being told. “Let’s be patient. Let’s make sure that he’s getting what he needs.”Frustrated, the future RSL star met with May. He remembers his coach telling him to be patient and that “it was what’s best for me in the long run.”“I think if I had gone earlier, I feel like my development wouldn’t have gone the way it did,” Gozo said.He finished that first season with 16 regular-season goals and added another five in the MLS NEXT Cup tournament. It was after that first season that Gozo realized his dream of pursuing soccer professionally was possible. In December 2022, at 15, the Real Monarchs signed Gozo to a MLS NEXT Pro professional contract. He made his Real Salt Lake debut the following October and signed his homegrown contract with RSL in February 2024. Real Salt Lake midfielder Zavier Gozo poses for a portrait at America First Field in Sandy after team practice on Friday, May 1, 2026. | Isaac Hale, Deseret News But as he transitioned to Real’s first team, he realized what most young players realize in that situation — he was no longer the best on his team. “You get up there, and you think you’re the best player,” Gozo said. “You get into practice, you become the worst player all of a sudden, and you have to climb the ranks. I think that was the biggest shock for me.”Gozo earned his first start on April 29, 2025. It’s a moment, the young star thinks of often.“I feel like every game I play I want to be as hungry as I was then,” he said.I feel like if I’m right with my faith, I play well on the field and I am happier off the field.Zavier GozoAbout a month later on May 24, 2025, he scored his first goal, 50 seconds into the match against the Vancouver Whitecaps. Upon scoring the goal, Gozo didn’t know what to do, so he ran to the corner nearest the goal and screamed. His family was seated in that corner section and ran down the stairs toward him. “We’re watching. It just goes in. We just start freaking out,” his older brother Elijah Gozo said. “I think none of us really knew what to do.”That moment is Esther Gozo’s favorite from her son’s Real Salt Lake career.“I’d never had such an adrenaline rush,” she said. That first goal came in the middle of a special, whirlwind weekend for the then-18-year-old. Two days prior, he graduated high school, and the day after the goal, he baptized one of his former teammates and best friends into the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.‘God has a perfect plan for me’ Real Salt Lake midfielder Zavier Gozo speaks as he’s interviewed by the Deseret News at America First Field in Sandy after team practice on Friday, May 1, 2026. | Isaac Hale, Deseret News Zavier Gozo has built his life and his soccer career on the foundation of his faith. As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Gozo regularly attends the temple, a dedicated house of worship where church members participate in sacred ordinances. Gozo also studies the church’s Sunday School curriculum daily.“I always say God has a perfect plan for me and whatever happens is what’s supposed to happen,” he said. “So I think that helps me play free during the games and live my life. Whether good or bad happens, I feel like it’s what’s meant for me.” The morning before a Real Salt Lake match, you’ll find Gozo at what Latter-day Saints believe is the House of the Lord. Last year, he decided to include worshipping in the temple as part of his prematch routine. Inside the temple, he’s reminded of “what I’m really here for and what life really means to me.”“I feel like a lot of times I get too hyped up, and when I’m too hyped up, I don’t play my best,” Gozo said. “So, I just like to be in a calm mindset and feel like the Lord is with me.”Gozo believes that if he prioritizes his faith, it shows on the pitch.“I feel like if I’m right with my faith, I play well on the field and I am happier off the field,” he said.Gozo didn’t always prioritize God. But following some serious internal reflection roughly two years ago, he committed to changing that, he said.A quick scroll through Gozo’s Instagram reveals that he uses scripture verses as captions for the majority of his posts.“Soccer is a tool that I can use to spread the light that God has given me and all the blessings that he’s given me,” Gozo said.Every match, he plays with a white, makeshift wristband with a scripture verse scrawled on it. He chooses a new verse every season. This year, it’s Jeremiah 1:8: “Be not afraid of their faces: for I am with thee to deliver thee, saith the Lord.” Real Salt Lake forward Zavier Gozo (72) loses his cleat during a challenge by Seattle Sounders defender Yeimar Gómez (28) during the first half of the game at America First Field in Sandy on Saturday, Feb. 28, 2026. | Rio Giancarlo, Deseret News Underneath the scripture, he writes “Just be you” and the names of his mother and girlfriend, Afton Perry, who plays soccer for BYU.“I think it’s just a reminder every time I step on the pitch who I’m playing for and what I should be,” he said. His older brother has seen faith ground Gozo as the spotlight grows and pressure builds — especially with Europe looming.“I think the reason why he’s been able to kind of stay grounded and stay humble and get through all those things is just being so centered in Christ and having that relationship with him, and having a good relationship with his family,” Elijah Gozo said.Perry, who often attends the temple and studies scriptures with her boyfriend, said Gozo has “relied on the Lord more” as his life and career have gotten “crazier.”“Alot of people try to find their confidence from awards or the fame or what other people have to say,” Perry said. “But I think he finds his confidence and true value, again, from his faith and what he believes.”Whether I do good or do bad, I go home. I hug my mom. When Gozo was in elementary school, he and his father were at The Humanitarian Center of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where Alban Gozo volunteered as a teacher. The father and son were about to head to Burger King when Alban Gozo realized he had lost his wallet. Zavier Gozo suggested they pray to find it. Alban Gozo hadn’t even thought to pray — it “was too elementary for me,” he said — but he asked his son if he would like to say the prayer. The young Zavier obliged.Still unable to find the wallet, they left the humanitarian center. But after leaving the parking lot, Alban Gozo’s phone rang. Someone had found the wallet, which meant Zavier’s prayer was answered — and he was able to get his burger after all.A safe space away from soccer Real Salt Lake midfielder Zavier Gozo (72) gives fans a thumbs up as he exits the game as Real Salt lake and Portland Timbers play at America First Field in Sandy on Saturday, May 2, 2026. Real won 2-0. | Scott G Winterton, Deseret News Once Zavier has left the room, I ask his mother if she has time for a couple more questions. The first one brings her to tears. What’s one thing everyone should know about her son?“You’re going to make me cry,” she said. “He’s got a great heart. I’m so proud of him, and I think the gospel helped with that for sure, keeps him humble. But he really has a sweet heart. He treats me very well. … He just really cherishes and works to have good relationships with his family and now with his girlfriend and her family.”Esther and Alban Gozo separated when Zavier was 8 and divorced three years later. Though Alban is still very involved in all of their lives, Esther, Zavier and Elijah became a “good tight unit” following the separation. She considers her son one of her “good friends.”After two years living in the dorms at the academy, Gozo moved home at 16 and still lives with his mom in Eagle Mountain.Being able to come home after every training session and match helps the young star never “get too low or too high.”“Whether I do good or do bad, I go home. I hug my mom,” he said.Esther and her ex-husband worked to make their family a safe space for their son away from soccer, she tells me.“It was never about being a pro to us, to me or his dad,” Esther Gozo said. “It was just do your best, and we’re always here no matter what happens, no matter what the result of the game is.”Real Salt Lake’s ‘golden child’ Real Salt Lake forward Zavier Gozo (72) shoots past Inter Miami midfielder Telasco Segovia (8) during the second half of an MLS game at America First Field in Sandy on Wednesday, April 22, 2026. | Rio Giancarlo When Zavier Gozo isn’t practicing or playing soccer, he’s your typical teenager. He enjoys playing Skip-Bo, UNO and Nertz with his family, though his brother says he “definitely” is not as good at card games as he is at soccer. He has a habit of leaving the lights on — that’s how his mom knows he’s been home — and he often sings around the house. (His go-to is Mario’s “Let Me Love You.”)“I don’t think I have the best voice in the world, but I do love to sing,” he said. His unwavering belief in himself is what’s really setting himself apart.Pablo MastroeniHe plays Just Dance and Super Mario Bros. with Perry. He watches and attends as many of her BYU games as he can, including spring scrimmages, and he gets mad when his career prevents him from being there. He attends her siblings’ soccer games, where he is often recognized by young Real Salt Lake fans. “My parents always think it’s crazy how one second they’re watching him on TV (doing) all these crazy things, and then the next second, he’s just at our house just being himself and being a 19-year-old kid,” Perry said. At practice, he’s often smiling as he visits with his teammates. When he leaves the practice field, he greets Real’s communications team with high-fives and fist bumps.Real Salt Lake head coach Pablo Mastroeni called Gozo “one of the most wonderful, joyful, happy, smiling, pleasant players I’ve ever met.”“I think he’s ingratiated himself in a way where he’s friends with everyone in the locker room,” Mastroeni said. “He gets on with everyone on the staff. He’s a model, a representative of this club and the state, and so he’s really our golden child.” ‘The sky’s the limit’ Sporting Kansas City midfielder Nemanja Radoja (6) and Real Salt Lake forward Zavier Gozo (72) battle for a header during the first half of the game at America First Field in Sandy on Saturday, Sept. 13, 2025. | Rio Giancarlo, Deseret News Gozo’s game is defined by creativity and confidence. While trying to break into Real’s first team, Gozo learned to play with a sense of fearlessness. That came with some hiccups early on, as Mastroeni would talk with his young star about if he made the best decision on a play. Gozo made his share of mistakes, but Mastroeni said that hasn’t stopped him — noting the young star’s recent goals with “low percentage chances” of success.“His unwavering belief in himself is what’s really setting himself apart because he’s willing to go against conventional thought in certain plays,” Mastroeni said. “But he makes the play.”Growing up, Zavier and Elijah would practice moves they saw on YouTube, including Zlatan Ibrahimović’s legendary bicycle kicks, which they dreamed of scoring in a real game. That dream came to fruition last season when Zavier Gozo scored one for Real Salt Lake. It’s his favorite moment of his career.Bicycle kick from Zavier Gozo!! 🚲 pic.twitter.com/FEsE3FTDuh— Major League Soccer (@MLS) September 18, 2025Mastroeni said Gozo’s defending has improved, and he’s learned to preserve his energy through better defending and understanding of tactical concepts. “His improvement has been through the roof, and if he keeps going at this pace, the sky’s the limit for Gozo,” he said.To take his game to the next level, Mastroeni said Gozo just needs “more games in an environment like we have here that is psychologically safe for the young players” to make and learn from his mistakes, instead of at other clubs where “you get yanked out of games” for those same errors.Mastroeni said he sees the Utahn becoming a star on both the national team and eventually in Europe, home of the sports’ most prestigious teams and players. “He’s the prototype of what you want from a modern soccer player, which is highly technical, goal-scoring threat, assist threat,” Mastroeni said. “Physically he’s on par with some of the best players in the world, I’d imagine, given that he’s one of the top players in MLS.” Zavier Gozo’s soccer future Real Salt Lake midfielder Zavier Gozo takes a selfie with a fan as players sign autographs after a team practice at America First Field in Sandy on Friday, May 1, 2026. | Isaac Hale, Deseret News On Tuesday, at New York City’s South Street Seaport’s Pier 17, U.S. national team head coach Mauricio Pochettino will unveil his 26-player roster for the World Cup.Real Salt Lake hoped two of its players would be on it — Gozo and Diego Luna. But The Athletic reported Friday that both players were informed they will not represent the U.S. at the World Cup.On Monday, Gozo told The Guardian, who published the entire U.S. roster Saturday, that he and Luna both received an email Friday after training, informing them that they had not made the roster.“I thought I would be less disappointed than I was,” he said. “Obviously, it wasn’t like I was supposed to go. I feel like I was disappointed, but I also think it just gave me so much more motivation to be able to make the first team, whenever that is.”Prior to the news, Gozo had told me he was “extremely flattered to be in that conversation.”I feel like you don’t grow when you’re comfortable.Zavier GozoJust to be in consideration for one of the 26 roster spots is significant for a 19-year-old who has never been called up to the senior national team. “To represent the senior team in the World Cup would be my biggest dream probably,” Gozo said. “I think the World Cup is the pinnacle of all soccer, so I think representing my country that I’ve grown up in and that’s given me so much, I feel like is my dream.”His other dream is to play in Europe. In April, Gozo appeared on “MLS Countdown” and was asked about his “dream scenario” with “some big-time clubs in Europe sniffing around Zavier Gozo.”“In the summer window, obviously, I’d like to go to Europe,” he said. “That’s been my dream for as long as I could remember. I think that’s the perfect time for me to take the next step. And if I have that opportunity, I 100% want to take it.”"In the summer window I'd like to go to Europe." 👀Zavier Gozo talked to the MLS Countdown Crew about his club future and USMNT hopes. 🌟 pic.twitter.com/ZeSjZdKN7c— MLS on Air (@MLSonAir) April 28, 2026Gozo reiterated that hope in our recent conversation.“I want to play in Europe,” he said. “I want to play in Champions League. I want to play in the biggest competitions and play for the best leagues. … I feel like I’m developing at a fast pace, and I think going over there, I would be able to adapt quick at the stage that I am.”But Gozo can’t just leave for Europe on his own volition. He is still under contract with Real through 2027 and with club options through 2029, suitors for his services will have to make a handsome offer to Real Salt Lake to buy his rights.Whenever Gozo leaves for Europe, it will be quite the change — both personally and professionally — after spending his entire life and career in Utah, but his family supports his decision. His parents may even take turns staying in Europe while he adjusts to his new life and environment.New tests await the young star as he’ll have to climb the ranks of his new team, much like he first did with Real. But he’s at peace with the challenge. “It will be hard I think, for sure, but I feel like you don’t grow when you’re comfortable,” Gozo said. “I think thisis the place where I’m comfortable. So I think given that, I think I need to get out of my comfort zone.” Real Salt Lake midfielder Zavier Gozo (72) looks over at fans as he exits the game as Real Salt lake and Portland Timbers play at America First Field in Sandy on Saturday, May 2, 2026. Real won 2-0. | Scott G Winterton, Deseret News It’s his relationship with God that’s given him that peace, and much like the scripture on his wristband says, he won’t be alone. Wherever Gozo ends up and whatever life throws his way, he’ll always have his family and his faith to anchor and guide him.“The Lord’s given me peace in my heart that this is the right time for me to go, and that’s my biggest pushing factor,” he said. “That’s why I feel so good about it.”

NEW YORK — With lefty Jared Young expected to return from the injured list on Tuesday, the Mets were on the brink of a roster decision. To make space for Young, would the Mets option MJ Melendez, prospect Nick Morabito or backup infielder Vidal Bruján?After outfielder Tyrone Taylor hobbled off the field with an apparent injury in the sixth inning on Monday afternoon at Citi Field, it doesn’t sound like the Mets will need to make that choice after all.Taylor limped out of the box after grounding out to third base in the sixth inning of Monday’s 7-2 loss to the Reds. Once he was retired at first, Taylor turned right, stepping gingerly until he walked into the dugout, disappearing down the steps into the Mets’ clubhouse.MORE BY MAX GOODMANMets injury news: Latest updates on 8 players like Lindor, Alvarez and moreMay. 25, 2026, 3:45 p.m.What can Mets do with their league-worst offense to turn this around?May. 25, 2026, 6:30 a.m.When the Mets took the field on defense for the top of the seventh inning a few moments later, Melendez had entered the game, taking Taylor’s spot in left field. Morabito slid over from left to right — Carson Benge started as the Mets’ designated hitter on Monday with Juan Soto still out of the lineup due to flu-like symptoms. The Mets announced later in Monday’s game that Taylor was pulled with right hip pain. After the final out, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza revealed that Taylor will undergo imaging on his hip on Tuesday and that he’ll likely land on the injured list. This is the latest blow for a team that’s been dealing with plenty of injury adversity throughout this season. Regulars Francisco Lindor, Francisco Alvarez, Jorge Polanco and Luis Robert Jr. are all on the IL as well as reliever A.J. Minter and starter Kodai Senga. Minter, like Young, is expected to return from a lengthy stint on the injured list early this week, as early as Tuesday.Read the original article on NJ.com. Stewart is an elite defender — one of the WNBA’s most consistent. She’s also 6’4. But that didn’t matter. Leite, a 17.3% career three-point shooter in the WNBA, pulled up for three. Thanks to her big triple, the Portland Fire led the New York Liberty by 6 points with 14.4 seconds to spare. Liberty guard Marine Johannes responded with a three-pointer of her own, but the game was out of reach. The pull-up three was Leite’s second consecutive clutch basket in the final seconds of Monday night’s 81-74 Fire win over the Liberty. She drove to the basket with 27.1 seconds to play, tying up the game against New York. A Sarah Ashlee Barker game-winner ended up securing that May 12th win. Leite is having a strong all-around season. On Monday, she scored a team-high 18 points on 8-14 shooting; the Fire outscored the Liberty by 8 points in her 22 minutes on the floor.Leite’s points, rebounds, and assists per game have all more than doubled; she averaged 7.2 points, 1.3 rebounds, and 2 assists per game, and has seen those numbers rise to 15 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 4.8 assists per game this season. Her efficiency has also risen; she averaged 38.7% in her rookie campaign and is shooting 5% better this year in Portland. The Fire are 3-2 in the five games the sophomore guard has played. Leite is far from the only reason why the Fire, one of two 2026 expansion teams, have begun the season 4-3. Bridget Carleton, the No. 1 overall pick in the expansion draft, is averaging 16.5 points per game, 10 more than she averaged last year as a role player on the Minnesota Lynx. Emily Engslter, Megan Gustafson, Nyadiew Puoch, and Luisa Geiselsoder have all been key contributors. And, Ashlee Barker, who is averaging 10.3 points off the bench, has also been a monster in the clutch. In addition to her game-winner earlier in the month, Barker completed an and-one driving layup in the final minute of a crunch-time victory over the Connecticut Sun. In Monday’s win over the Liberty, she hit a go-ahead corner three to give the Fire a one-point edge with just under four minutes to spare. The Fire never trailed again. But, Leite — left unprotected by the Golden State Valkyries after her rookie season — has been the primary scoring option in the clutch. And, on Monday, she did it again.

WWE Clash In Italy Final Card After Raw On May 25, 2026
COLUMBUS, OHIO - MAY 25: Oba Femi addresses Paul Heyman during Monday Night RAW at Jerome Schottenstein Center on May 25, 2026 in Columbus, Ohio. (Photo by Michael Marques/WWE via Getty Images)WWE via Getty ImagesIs Clash in Italy a premier premium live event? I don't know, but the card planned for Turin sure looks like it could compete with Day 1 or 2 from WrestleMania 42 and just about anything the promotion may have planned for SummerSlam. After Monday's episode of Raw in Columbus, Ohio, which opened with a explanatory pre-recorded promo from Brock Lesnar and in-ring mic work between Oba Femi and Paul Heyman, it is clear the CII event is a major one on the WWE calendar. Barring something highly unpredictable, the full card is now set, and it is serious.Key Facts at a GlanceEvent: WWE Clash in Italy 2026 (first WWE PLE in Italy)Date: Sunday, May 31, 2026Venue: Inalpi Arena, Turin, ItalyStart time: 2 p.m. ET / 11 a.m. PT (kickoff around 12 p.m. ET)How to watch: ESPN App with an ESPN Unlimited plan (U.S.), Netflix internationallyHeadliners: Two men's world titles, two women's titles, plus Brock LesnarWhat Is The Full WWE Clash In Italy Card?Per WWE's official listing, the card is built around five marquee matches:Roman Reigns (c) vs. Jacob Fatu — Tribal Combat for the World Heavyweight ChampionshipCody Rhodes (c) vs. Gunther — Undisputed WWE ChampionshipRhea Ripley (c) vs. Jade Cargill — WWE Women's ChampionshipBecky Lynch (c) vs. Sol Ruca — Women's Intercontinental ChampionshipOba Femi vs. Brock LesnarWWE has announced that Femi vs. Lesnar, Reigns vs. Fatu and Becky Lynch vs. Sol Ruca will air during the first hour on ESPN, which positions Cody Rhodes vs. Gunther to close the show as the main event. That running order is a statement in itself, giving streaming audiences the biggest crossover match and a title bout during the ESPN window. What Are The Biggest Matches On The Card?Rhodes vs. Gunther is the purist's main event. WWE creative has built it as an ace-versus-general story, with Gunther's disciplined, punishing style making Europe feel like his territory and Rhodes cast as the traveling champion defending in hostile ground. While fans have had a ball booing Gunther since he retired John Cena in December, there is a contingent of WWE fans who wouldn’t mind seeing the Ring General dethrone Rhodes.Cody has been nothing short of brilliant since he came back to WWE, but even the greatest can trigger top-of-the-mountain fatigue.Reigns vs. Fatu carries the Bloodline weight. The Tribal Combat stipulation, traditionally a no-holds-barred brawl with the Tribal Chief mantle in play, expands that lore outside North America, with Fatu booked as the violent wildcard who attacked Reigns after Backlash to force the match.I’m hoping for a significant twist that reignites the Bloodline story with another meaningful chapter.Femi vs. Lesnar is the wildcard spectacle. WWE's booking positions it as a torch test for Femi, following Lesnar's recent return, and it gives the card a true fight-poster look even without a title attached. It wouldn’t surprise me to see Lesnar win and the two titans settle this with the latter’s retirement match happening at SummerSlam. Why Does Clash In Italy Matter? This is WWE's first premium live event ever in Italy, and the company has treated it as a genuine supercard rather than a soft test run. Two men's world titles, two women's championships and a returning Brock Lesnar is a stacked lineup for a debut market. For me, it is all about Reigns-Fatu and Rhodes-Gunter. However, the women’s matches are the sleeper value. Ripley vs. Cargill escalates their WrestleMania 42 rematch, and Becky Lynch vs. Sol Ruca is the kind of veteran-versus-breakout booking that can overdeliver and steal post-show buzz. If the top of the card lives up to the billing, perhaps Turin becomes a recurring stop rather than a one-off.This article was originally published on Forbes.com

Anunoby added 17 points and reserve Landry Shamet had 16 points with 4-of-4 three-point shooting to lead the Knicks' blowout triumph."We're going to enjoy it for a day or two but we've got a larger goal here and we've got to start locking in," Shamet said.New York swept the Cavaliers 4-0 in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference final and will play for the crown starting June 3.New York, who won their only NBA titles in 1970 and 1973, will face either defending champions Oklahoma City or San Antonio, who are tied 2-2 in the Western Conference final."We've got four more wins to try and go get and we know it's going to be even harder," Shamet said. "Being in this position with this team, it's pretty special."The Knicks would have to sweep the finals to equal the NBA record playoff win streak of 15 by Golden State in 2017."We knew our team was capable of doing this," Towns said."All we had to do is put the work in and continue to believe in each other. That's what we did and that's why we're here."- Brunson stars -Jalen Brunson, who was named the series Most Valuable Player with an average 25.5 points, 7.8 assists and 3.3 rebounds, added 15 points for New York, who improved to 12-2 in the playoffs."It means a lot, but I wouldn't be here without my teammates, the belief they had in me," said Brunson, who was two years old when the Knicks last made the finals, when his father was a guard on the club."They give me the confidence. They let me be me. Most importantly, we all believe in each other from top to bottom. It's an honor to play with them."Teammate Josh Hart paid tribute to Brunson. "He doesn't let us get too high or too low," said Hart. "He wants to make sure we double down on our habits and play this game to win."Everybody wants each other to be successful. Everybody is willing to sacrifice for the betterment of the team. When you do that, that's what makes a great team."The Knicks closed the first quarter with an 8-0 run and began the second with a 12-0 surge to lead 50-26.Shamet made two three-pointers in the pivotal stretch while Brunson and Miles McBride each made a three-pointer as the Knicks seized command.Another Shamet three-pointer gave the Knicks their largest first-half lead at 61-32 and they overwhelmed the Cavs after half-time, forcing 22 turnovers that led to 34 points."I'm disappointed for the group," Cavs coach Kenny Atkinson said. "You want to fulfil your expectations. That was disappointing."Donovan Mitchell led the Cavaliers with 31 points.Knicks coach Mike Brown called his players a "heck of a group"."Every single one of the guys on the team has sacrificed. Every single one of the guys on the team has competitive spirit," said Brown."Every single one of the guys on the team is connected. Every single one of the guys on the team believe in each other and the process and they all hold me and each other accountable."js/

Deja vu as Hurricanes beat Canadiens, 3-2, in overtime to take 2-1 series lead
MONTREAL, CANADA - MAY 25: Taylor Hall #71 of the Carolina Hurricanes scores a goal past Jakub Dobes #75 of the Montréal Canadiens as Logan Stankoven #22 celebrates during the first period in Game Three of the Eastern Conference Final of the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs at Bell Centre on May 25, 2026 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. (Photo by Bruce Bennett/Getty Images) | Getty Images The Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Montreal Canadiens, 3-2, in overtime on Monday night at the Bell Centre. When the Canes needed them most, the top line stepped up. Andrei Svechnikov’s shot 14 minutes into overtime gave the Canes their second straight 3-2 overtime win and a 2-1 series lead. Only two wins separate the Canes from a Stanley Cup berth. The road to the Stanley Cup in the East once again runs through Raleigh, with the Hurricanes taking back home ice advantage in the series.Much of the first half of the first period was controlled by the Hurricanes’ relentless forecheck that hardly allowed Montreal any clean breakouts. Shayne Gostisbehere put the Canes on the board first, finding the back of the net less than 10 minutes into the game on a great pinch in. For the third straight game, Carolina took a 1-0 lead early in the first period. Carolina’s forecheck seemed to let off the gas a bit in the first period. That lull in action allowed the Canadiens to tie the game on a pinch in of their own, as defenseman Mike Matheson found the top corner of the net to tie the game at 1-1. Just as quick as the Habs tied the game, the Canes took the lead right back. Taylor Hall notched his fourth goal of the playoffs on a tap in up close with a little over three minutes left in the opening period. Following the first period, the Canes held a 14-5 shot advantage. In the second period both teams continued to trade offensive chances, a stark change to the series. After Jordan Martinook took a slashing penalty around five minutes into the period, Carolina’s penalty killing streak came to an end on a give-and-go resulting in a Lane Huston goal. The Canes were able to counter with a 3-on-1, but Canadiens goaltender Jakub Dobes made a save on a shot from Svechnikov to keep the game tied. Carolina was unable to convert on their second power play of the night, with Seth Jarvis ringing a shot off the post. For the first time in the series, the game was tied heading into the third period. After a slow start to third period, it looked like the Canadiens had taken the lead after Noah Dobson banked it in. But after the Hurricanes challenged the play, it was determined Cole Caufield went offsides prior to the goal, keeping the game knotted. The Hurricanes were unable to convert on their third power play of the game, bringing their series total to 0-for-8. For the second straight game, overtime was needed to break a 2-2 tie. After a Montreal turnover, the shot from Svechnikov sealed the game for the Canes and gave them their second straight overtime victory. The Hurricanes are now 5-0 during the playoffs in overtime games. Game 4 is set for Wednesday at 8 PM, with a chance for Carolina to take a demanding 3-1 series lead heading back to Raleigh.

Bobby Marks: Robert Williams III could be an option for the Lakers
Throughout the NBA, there has been a renaissance at the center position over the last several years. Everyone talks about Victor Wembanyama of the San Antonio Spurs, but there are plenty of other quality centers across the league these days, especially in the Western Conference. The Los Angeles Lakers have a player who plays like a quality center a fair amount of the time in Deandre Ayton. But he also plays lackadaisical basketball quite often, and he has been viewed as a disappointment. Many feel the Lakers need some sort of upgrade at the 5 in order to become championship contenders.ESPN analyst Bobby Marks was asked by Jorge Sedano and Scott Kaplan of ESPN LA 710 radio if there are big men the team could acquire in order to compete with the quality big men on other good and great teams. Marks said that Robert Williams III of the Portland Trail Blazers has been talked about as an option.“The one name that basically picked up the most buzz, a lot of teams in Chicago last week, was Robert Williams,” Marks responded. “That’s the name.“Now you have to be cautious with that because the games, availability, the minutes. That’s the one guy, I don’t want to say neutralized Victor, but I think guarded him probably one of the best in the playoffs in the first round. That would be the guy.“He’s probably one of the top unrestricted free agents centers out there and I think he gives you that shot blocker, that rim protector, that guy that can (be a) lob threat for Luka. Now the question is what’s the cost? Is it $12-13 million? I think that’s kind of where his range is, but there will be other teams that also see that.”Availability has been the big bone of contention for Williams over the years. He has appeared in at least 60 games in a season just once since coming into the league in 2018, and he played in a total of just 61 games during the 2022-23, 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons. This season, he took part in 59 regular-season contests, which is still a relatively low number. But he has always been a very capable rebounder and shot-blocker. He has career averages of 7.1 points, 6.9 rebounds and 1.6 blocks in 19.6 minutes a game, and he's also a fairly reliable finisher at or near the basket. He also possesses ample athleticism, which is one quality Los Angeles lacks, and he went to the Eastern Conference finals three times as a member of the Boston Celtics. If Ayton, who has a player option for next season, remains on the team, Williams could make an excellent backup, as long as L.A. has a third-string center behind him. This article originally appeared on LeBron Wire: Bobby Marks: Robert Williams III could be an option for the Lakers

    Jays Lose To Marlins
May 25, 2026; Toronto, Ontario, CAN; Toronto Blue Jays center fielder Nathan Lukes (38) breaks his bat hitting a single against the Miami Marlins in the first inning at Rogers Centre. Mandatory Credit: Dan Hamilton-Imagn Images | Dan Hamilton-Imagn Images Marlins 8 Jays 2That was just pathetic. I don’t really want to recap that, but….the Jays have had a lot of poor defensive outfielders, but Yohendrick Piñango had what must be one of the worst defensive games in team history. He seems to be scared to take charge. Scared to call ‘mine’ and go get a ball. He had an easily catchable ball fall in front of him and, later, had an easily catchable ball go over his head. I don’t think he’s a terrible outfielder, but he seems scared to go make a play.Beyond that, Trey Yesavage was not great. 6.2 innings, 5 hits, 5 earned, 2 walks, and 6 strikeouts. He was let down by his defense at key times. Beyond that, Tyler Rogers had a tough time, 3 earned runs while getting just two outs. He could have used some help from his defense, but he’s supposed to be a ground ball pitcher, who is giving up way too many fly balls. Adam Macko had a tough time, too, giving up 2 hits while getting just one out.Tanner Andrews got into his first MLB game, pitching a clean ninth. It is great to see someone who has worked so long and so hard finally get to the majors. On offense? 10 hits and 3 walks, but just the two runs. Nathan Lukes, finally making it back from the IL, had 3 hits. Ernie Clements had 2 hits, including a home run. Getting the 0 fors were George Springer and Andrés Giménez, both of whom came up in big moments and failed. Jays of the Day: Lukes (0.14 WPA). Other Award: Yesavage (-0.22), Springer (-0.14), Gimenez (-0.13), Okamoto (-0.10), and let’s give one to Piñango for his inept defense. Tomorrow we have Sandy Alcantara (3-3, 4.00) vs. Braydon (2-1, 2.73). It can’t be any worse than today. Right? Please let’s not be worse than today.

Virginia Tech football recruiting: Hokies land 4-star OL Kaden Buchanan

(Photo by Lee Coleman/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images) | Icon Sportswire via Getty Images We told you that Monday could be a good day for the Virginia Tech Hokies. Indeed, it was, as four-star offensive lineman Kaden Buchanan officially committed to Virginia Tech. BREAKING: Class of 2027 IOL Kaden Buchanan has Committed to Virginia Tech, he tells me for @RivalsThe 6’5 350 IOL chose the Hokies over Kentucky and NC State“#STHUAW, Isaiah 54:17”⁰⁰https://t.co/2ARQnt8tYLpic.twitter.com/o4A1SWCLaO— Hayes Fawcett (@Hayesfawcett3) May 25, 2026Buchanan, a 6-foot-4, 330-pound interior offensive lineman from Friendship Christian School in Lebanon, Tennessee, picked the Hokies over his other finalists, Kentucky and North Carolina State. Buchanan is Virginia Tech’s 14th commitment for the 2027 class, and, per 247Sports, the Hokies now have the nation’s 14th-ranked class. In case you missed it, here’s the video of Buchanan announcing his commitment live on the CBS Sports YouTube page:The moment @KadenBuchanan77 committed to @coachjfranklin and @HokiesFB. https://t.co/HUaMtj6xxNpic.twitter.com/QTIgly5wQi— Tom Loy (@TomLoy247) May 25, 2026Buchanan is the first offensive line commitment for the Hokies in 2027, but he won’t be the last. While head coach James Franklin has been instrumental in VT’s recruiting turnaround, offensive line coach Matt Moore was the one who put the Hokies over the top in this recruitment. “I ultimately knew that Virginia Tech was where I wanted to be ever since I stepped on campus there, just the overall feeling that I got there was unlike anywhere else, but it really closed the deal being able to talk to Coach Moore at my house,” Buchanan said, via Evan Watkins of 247Sports. “Our relationship is amazing,” Buchanan continued. “It’s really development, because offensive line is a developmental position and he wants me to come in and get developed and he wants to coach me. It’s a very good relationship in the sense of I know that he is a really good coach and I know that all three of them together are going to be able to develop me as mush as possible, as good as anybody else in the nation, if not better.”Buchanan is a road-grader. He’s also not a projection. He’s an interior lineman now and will be in college. Often, we see high school tackles projecting to guard at the next level. Not Buchanan. A big win for James Franklin and Matt Moore. Welcome home.

Bayern Munich News: Harry Kane, FC Bayern have no issues with contract years; Liverpool breaking the bank again this summer?; and MORE!
Berlin, Germany - May 23: Harry Kane of FC Bayern Muenchen celebrates after scoring his team's first goal during the DFB Cup Final 2026 match between FC Bayern München and VfB Stuttgart at Olympiastadion on May 23, 2026 in Berlin, Germany. (Photo by Harry Langer/DeFodi Images/DeFodi via Getty Images) | DeFodi Images via Getty Images No dispute on years between Kane, Bayern (Sport Bild’s Christian Falk)Contrary to previous reports, Sport Bild’s Christian Falk says that there is no disagreement on the amount of years for a contract extension between Bayern Munich and Harry Kane. This lines up with Kane’s statements over the weekend, where he said the delay in talking about a new deal was strictly because he wanted to let the season play out and also finish the World Cup.Falk’s initial report came out on Friday with this information: ❌ It is NOT TRUE: Bayern Munich and Harry Kane disagree over the contract length on the table. The rumours were that Kane is demanding a contract until 2030, while Bayern Munich are just offering a one-year deal. But no, at the moment, the negotiations have not really started. Of course, when they’re at the table, this will be the big question. Will it be one year more or two years more? I think it could be a one-year contract with the option of an additional year. But Harry Kane wants to concentrate on his next title, which is the DFB Pokal in Berlin. It won’t be a big topic before then. On the England international’s end, he’s very relaxed. He’s said he can sign a contract before the World Cup and also after the World Cup. So, nobody is in a rush. Herbert Hainer also made it clear that Kane will get a new contract from Bayern Munich. Everything is relaxed. This will — hopefully — ease the tension among some fans who began to fret Kane’s situation. Having Kane for an extra year or two after his deal ends in 2027 will be nice for the Bavarians. Milan to move on from Pulisic? Manager Massimiliano Allegri is likely to depart, while the futures of star players like Christian Pulisic, Luka Modric, Adrien Rabiot, Rafael Leão, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Fikayo Tomori are also up in the air as Milan will need to recoup around €100 million to plug their financial gaps.It feels like a longshot, but Bayern Munich did have some interest in Pulisic back before he moved from Borussia Dortmund to Chelsea. The Premier League side have reportedly reached an agreement in principle with the 23-year-old on a five-year contract, and are now pushing to agree to a transfer fee. The Times claims that the Scotland international is ready to join on a free transfer, with his contract coming to an end this summer. Tottenham were linked with a move back in January, but Robertson, 32, stayed with the Reds and was given a guard of honor from his teammates on Sunday during their draw with Brentford after nine years with the club.Robertson was briefly linked to Bayern Munich, but that move appears to be off the table now. Freddie Freeman sparks a 4-run seventh as the Dodgers rally past the Rockies 5-3
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Freddie Freeman doubled in the go-ahead run in a four-run seventh inning, and the Los Angeles Dodgers rallied to beat the Colorado Rockies 5-3 on Monday night in the series opener. Brennan Bernardino (2-3) came in and hit pitch-hitter Miguel Rojas to load the bases.Shohei Ohtani grounded into a force out, scoring Smith to trail 3-2 after the Dodgers successfully challenged the out call on Ohtani at first that would have been a double play. Mookie Betts followed with a tying sacrifice fly to left that scored Kim.Ohtani scored on Freeman's double to right for a 4-3 lead, the Dodgers' first since Kiké Hernández's RBI double in the third in his season debut.Andy Pages singled off reliever Jaden Hill, scoring Freeman for the Dodgers' fourth run of the inning.Ezequiel Tovar had a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the fourth and a solo homer in the seventh for the last-place Rockies.Tovar's second homer of the season came on an 0-1 pitch from reliever Kyle Hurt (1-0), snapping a streak of 38 consecutive scoreless innings by the Dodgers bullpen dating to May 12 against San Francisco. The streak was the longest by the team since 1901. A trainer and manager Dave Roberts came out to watch Sheehan throw several warmup pitches. The right-hander gave up two runs and five hits in six innings. Sheehan struck out eight and walked one.Tanner Gordon made his first start of the season for the Rockies after seven relief outings. Knicks fans, celebrities take over Cleveland's arena, NYC streets in celebration of trip to NBA Finals; Mayor Mamdani weighs in
New York Knicks fans are, indeed, partying like it’s 1999.This is because the Knicks are headed to the NBA Finals for the first time since 1999.In case you missed it, this is a very big deal — especially for Knicks fans starving for the franchise’s first NBA championship since most of them were born. Thanks to a 130-93 laugher over the Cleveland Cavaliers Monday to complete a dominant sweep and secure their 11th straight playoff win, the Knicks are four wins away from making that dream come true. Party starts in Cleveland’s home arenaThe party started early Monday before tipoff as fans anticipated the sweep. Rumblings of a Knicks fan takeover of Cleveland’s Rocket Arena surfaced before tip. And as the Knicks put the game away with a 20-0 run in the second quarter, that takeover became evident. Here’s documentation of the atmosphere from the Arena, per reporters on the scene:The sound in Rocket Arena feels extra loud tonight. Probably to drown out all the Knicks fans. Game 4 coming up— Vincent Goodwill (@VinceGoodwill) May 26, 2026Game ops just turned up the music very, very loud to try to drown out the "Let's go Knicks" chant. This challenge is deemed ... unsuccessful. pic.twitter.com/7sI7lqyOnM— Dan Devine (@YourManDevine) May 26, 2026Very, very loud MVP chants for Jalen Brunson in Cleveland.— Dan Devine (@YourManDevine) May 26, 2026MVP chants for Jalen Brunson at Rocket Arena pic.twitter.com/K6vG4Q5Hzs— Jared Schwartz (@jschwartz115) May 26, 2026It's a Knicks party inside Rocket Arena— Jared Schwartz (@jschwartz115) May 26, 2026Were Knicks celebrities denied courtside seats? Those noisy Knicks fans included many of the familiar celebrity faces regularly seen at Madison Square Garden.Among them was rapper Fat Joe, who claimed that the Cavaliers took away his courtside seats when they found out he’d procured them. They told him no Knicks fans allowed 😳 via @espnpic.twitter.com/wmvmxeN9ai— 2Cool2Blog (@2Cool2Blog) May 25, 2026Per the New York Post, the Cavaliers denied at least 10 courtside seats to Knicks fans once they learned of their rooting interest. But they weren’t denied entry into the building — they were just seated further back, per the report. The Cavaliers responded thusly when asked about the report by the Post:“Playoff courtside seating is governed by a specific agreement that prohibits the resale or transfer of tickets without approval,” a Cavaliers spokesperson told The Post. “All courtside ticket holders are required to comply with the terms of the single-game playoff agreement.”Whatever happened, Fat Joe found his way in. Astros throw a combined no-hitter in their 9-0 win over the Rangers
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Tatsuya Imai combined with relievers Steven Okert and Alimber Santa on the 17th regular-season no-hitter in Houston Astros history, and Christian Walker and Yordan Alvarez homered in a 9-0 win over the Texas Rangers on Monday night. It was the first no-hitter in the major leagues since Shota Imanaga and two Chicago Cubs relievers combined for a 12-0 win over Pittsburgh on Sept. 4, 2024.Imai (2-2) got in a groove after walking three of the first four batters he faced, as the 28-year-old rookie from Japan got 16 outs over his last 16 batters. Okert pitched the seventh inning before the 23-year-old Santa got the final six outs, becoming the first pitcher to be involved in a no-hitter in his big league debut. It was the fourth combined no-hitter in the regular season for the Astros, who had another one in the 2022 World Series against Philadelphia.Ronel Blanco tossed the previous no-hitter for Houston in a 10-0 victory over Toronto on April 1, 2024. In fact, Houston has authored three of the past seven and five of the last 11 major league no-hitters — beginning with the one in the World Series.Houston's four-game winning streak is its longest since taking five in a row after starting the season 0-2. This was the team's sixth shutout of the year.Texas, held scoreless for the fourth time this season, was no-hit for the sixth time overall. Imai struck out two and walked four in six innings. Okert struck out one of the four batters he faced. Santa ended the game with his first big league strikeout. The Astros went ahead to stay with a run in the first without a hit. Texas starter Kumar Rocker (2-5) hit Jeremy Peña with the first pitch of the game before a stolen base, a grounder and a sacrifice fly by Alvarez. Rocker struck out five and allowed four runs in five innings.Alvarez led off the fourth with his 16th homer and 33rd RBI to make it 2-0. The slugger had only two RBIs in his previous 14 games. Walker's 15th homer was a three-run shot off reliever Peyton Gray in a five-run seventh. Up nextRHP Jason Alexander (1-0, 7.30 ERA) pitches for Houston on Tuesday night. RHP Jack Leiter (1-4, 4.61) is winless in his last nine starts since winning his season debut for Texas on March 30.___AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/mlb

5 things that didn't exist the last time the Knicks were in the NBA Finals back in 1999
After nearly three decades, the New York Knicks are finally looking at a real shot at an NBA title. The Knicks rolled past the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference finals on Monday night to officially complete the series sweep and earn a trip to the NBA Finals. That’s something the Knicks haven’t pulled off since the 1998-99 season, a full 27 years ago. While their opponent isn’t solidified yet — the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs are tied up 2-2 in the Western Conference finals — a lot has changed since the Knicks were last in this spot. Many of the things we take for granted today didn’t exist yet. Ready to feel old?Almost all of social mediaSocial media wasn’t really a thing in 1999. There was instant messaging — remember AOL Instant Messenger? — but that was about it. Myspace didn’t launch until August 2003, and Facebook started in February of 2004. Twitter started in 2006, and Instagram didn’t come until 2010. Vine launched and shut down in that window, and TikTok wasn’t released internationally until 2017. Yahoo Sports wasn’t even two years old during the 1999 Finals. The internet was a very, very different place.Survivor, American Idol and TV in generalThe run of popular reality competition-style shows that dominated the 2000s and early 2010s hadn’t hit the airwaves yet. “Survivor,” which just completed its 50th season this spring, was still almost a year out from its first ever episode. “American Idol” came out in June 2002, and “America’s Got Talent” didn’t start until 2006. And while it had made its debut, MTV’s “Total Request Live” wasn’t even a year old the last time the Knicks were in the Finals. “Sopranos” had just finished its first season, “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” with Regis Philbin had just started, and “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” a show that is now preparing for its 28th season, was still months away from making its debut. The iPhone, and the BlackBerryThe first iPhone didn’t come out until January 2007, long after the Knicks’ last Finals run. Apps, games and social media like we have today simply didn’t exist. Cameras weren’t even a thing on phones back then. Those who did have phones almost exclusively used them for talking and very, very basic texting. The first BlackBerry devices had hit the market a few months before the Knicks’ last Finals appearance, but it wasn’t even an actual phone yet. It was more like a two-way pager with email. The first BlackBerry that was able to work like an actual phone didn’t come until 2002.Half of the Knicks’ current rosterLet’s get back to basketball. Half of the Knicks’ current roster wasn’t even alive the last time that the team reached the Finals. Of the 18 players currently on the Knicks, nine of them were born after the 1998-99 season had wrapped up. The youngest player, Pacôme Dadiet, wasn’t born until 2005. This group is young. The oldest player on the current Knicks probably doesn’t even remember the 1999 team, either. Jordan Clarkson was only seven when the Knicks were last in the Finals.Allen Iverson was the first ever NBA2K cover athlete back in 1999. (Manny Millan/Sports Illustrated via Getty Images) Manny Millan via Getty ImagesNBA 2KThe original NBA 2K video game was still months away from hitting shelves at this point in time, too, though video gaming in general was something limited to computers, the PlayStation or the Nintendo 64. The first XBox came out in 2001, a good six years after the PS1.Allen Iverson was the very first cover athlete for the initial 2K game, which was something made only for the Sega Dreamcast. The Philadelphia 76ers star and future Hall of Famer was entering his fourth season in the league at that point, and was still looking for his first All-Star nod. While that version of the game wouldn’t even come close to NBA 2K26 that’s out today, it did set the standard for NBA video games. Imagine how much fun that must have been to have back in 1999.

Japanese pitcher Imai, two relievers combine for Astros no-hitter
Japanese pitcher Tatsuya Imai of the Houston Astros and two relievers combined for a no-hit victory over the Texas Rangers, the first no-hitter of the Major League Baseball season (Ron Jenkins)Tatsuya Imai, in only his sixth Major League Baseball game since arriving from Japan, joined two relief pitchers to throw a no-hitter in Houston's 9-0 victory at Texas on Monday. The 28-year-old Japanese right-hander, who spent the past eight years with the Saitama Seibu Lions, struck out two batters and walked four in six hitless shutout innings for the Astros.American left-handed reliever Steven Okert blanked the Rangers in the seventh inning and Alimber Santa, a Dominican right-hander making his MLB debut, tossed the final two hitless innings to complete the first no-hitter of the MLB campaign. It was the 18th no-hitter in Astros history and the first since Ronel Blanco baffled the Toronto Blue Jays in April, 2024.Imai walked the first two batters he faced but tightened up from there and took the victory, improving to 2-2 on the campaign."The Rangers line-up wasn't swinging aggressively," Imai said through a translator."In my mind, I just wanted to get a first-pitch strike, just get in the zone and get the outs and I was able to get the big W for the team."It was the first MLB no-hitter since Japan's Shota Imanga and American relievers Nate Pearson and Porter Hodge of the Chicago Cubs against Pittsburgh in September, 2024.It was the fifth combined no-hitter in Astros' history, the first since a 2022 World Series game-four victory over Philadelphia on the way to the title.Imai threw a combined no-hitter last season in Japan, tossing eight innings before Kaima Taira threw a hitless ninth against Fukuoka.Imai signed a three-year MLB contract with the Astros worth $54 million but struggled early this season with a 7.27 earned run average after three starts before going on the injured list with arm fatigue. He returned two weeks ago and pitched twice before his no-hit achievement.js/dh
