SPORTS.YAHOO.COMBills news: Previewing Jim Leonhard’s new defenseORCHARD PARK, NEW YORK - NOVEMBER 13: Ed Oliver #91 of the Buffalo Bills pressures Russell Wilson #3 of the Denver Broncos during the first quarter of the game at Highmark Stadium on November 13, 2023 in Orchard Park, New York. (Photo by Bryan M. Bennett/Getty Images) | Getty Images The Buffalo Bills hired Jim Leonhard away from the Denver Broncos and are expecting the former Bills safety to overhaul a defensive unit that struggled at stopping the run, getting off the field on third down, and coming up with the big stop in the playoffs during the Sean McDermott era.Enter Leonhard, who plans to employ a base 3-4 defensive scheme. During Buffalo’s Organized Team Activities (OTAs), Leonhard has started defining his expectations for how Buffalo’s defensive pieces will operate in his system, and today’s edition of Buffalo Rumblinks leads off by examining what Leonhard’s new defensive scheme will look like this year, including how defensive tackle Ed Oliver is poised to be more disruptive for the Bills.Check out the assessments and then be sure to leave your thoughts on how you think Buffalo’s defense will fare this year in the comments section.Projecting what Jim Leonhard’s defense will look likeEd Oliver was a gamechanger when he was healthy last year, but Oliver was only a dominant presence for three whole games, amassing three sacks with four additional tackles for a loss, two additional quarterback hits and a forced fumble before he tore his biceps in a Week 7 win over the Carolina Panthers.Leonhard has big plans for how he will deploy Oliver in his defense in 2026.“I think Ed’s going to be really disruptive in this defense,” Leonhard said, “the base defense being more different for him than what it’s been in the past and, in all reality, (giving Oliver) a little more freedom than he’s had in the past.”In a session with the media during OTAs, Leonhard explained how Buffalo’s outside linebackers are expected to play more like defensive ends, traditional defensive ends will shift more inside, and traditional defensive tackles will line up next to the nose tackle in his scheme. He also described why adding veteran pass rusher Bradley Chubb was an essential signing; is excited to see what veteran CJ Gardner-Johnson will bring to Buffalo’s secondary; and says linebacker Dorian Williams has a golden opportunity to seize a starting role opposite Terrel Bernard. We also project Buffalo’s defensive starters; learn how outside linebacker Michael Hoecht (pictured below) is progressing nicely in his return following an Achillies injury; and find out how bulked-up defensive end Landon Jackson is embracing a new role on defense. Why Jim Leonhard is taking a steady approach to players as he installs Bills defense – Buffalo News (subscription required)Bills OTAs | Jim Leonhard defines his defensive terminology, Year 2 players aim to take a jump – BuffaloBills.comBills Leonhard offers early read on four key defenders – Democrat & ChronicleNew Bills DC says ‘more freedom’ will make Ed Oliver ‘disruptive’ – The Athletic (subscription required)Bills By The Numbers: Projecting Starting Roles And Fiercest Competitions On Defense – BuffaloBills.comEarly Glimpse of Bills Defense Emerging Under Jim Leonhard in Buffalo – Sports Illustrated Buffalo BillsMichael Hoecht eyes Bills training camp as his target in recovery from Achilles injury – Buffalo News (subscription required)Bills linebacker embracing fresh start after tough season – Democrat & ChronicleBigger and stronger, Landon Jackson embraces Bills’ defensive changes – Buffalo News (subscription required)Landon Jackson “The New Defense Is Something I’ve Thrived At” – BuffaloBills.comBills Up-and-Coming Homegrown Talent Finally Rising in Linebacker Ranks Under Jim Leonhard – Sports Illustrated Buffalo BillsEd Oliver Talks Disruptive New Scheme – BuffaloBills.comT.J. APNEWS.COMMedian pay for CEOs rose nearly 6% in 2025, but some compensation packages were eye-poppingElon Musk departs after a welcome ceremony with President Donald Trump and China's President Xi Jinping at the Great Hall of the People, Thursday, May 14, 2026, in Beijing. (AP Photo/Mark Schiefelbein, File)2026-05-27T12:42:52Z NEW YORK (AP) — The typical CEO compensation package rose nearly 6% in 2025 to $17.7 million, as company boards rewarded their top executives for bigger profits and higher stock prices, and gave them incentives to stick around and make even more money for shareholders. The median employee at companies in the S&P 500 earned $89,744, reflecting a 4.7% increase year over year. While that gain outpaced the rate of inflation in 2025, many workers were still feeling pinched by the accumulation of higher prices over the past few years and had to cut corners to make ends meet and run up credit card debt to pay for everyday necessities. The Associated Press’ CEO compensation survey, which uses data analyzed for The AP by Equilar, included pay data for 337 executives at S&P 500 companies who have served at least two full consecutive fiscal years at their companies, which filed proxy statements between Jan. 1 and April 30.Here’s a look at some highlights from the survey. The pay gapAt half the companies in AP’s survey it would take the worker at the middle of the company’s pay scale 200 years to make what the CEO did in one, up from 192 years in last year’s survey. Companies have been required to disclose this so-called pay ratio since 2018. While the biggest gaps occur at companies where the CEO received compensation loaded with one-time awards of stock, the pay ratio also tends to be highest at companies in industries where wages are typically low. For instance, at Coca-Cola, its CEO earned nearly 1,739 times the median pay of $17,947 for its workers. The CEO at the retailer TJX Cos. makes about 1,774 times what a worker making the company’s median pay does. Sarah Anderson, who directs the Global Economy Project at the progressive Institute for Policy Studies, noted in an email that there are ballot initiative campaigns in San Francisco and Los Angeles to raise taxes on companies with sizable gaps between CEO and worker pay. Read More “At a time when working families are struggling with rising costs, it’s obscene to see CEO pay continuing to skyrocket,” Anderson wrote. Overall, wages and benefits netted by private-sector workers in the U.S. rose 3.4% through 2025, according to the Labor Department. The average worker in the U.S. makes $67,000 a year. That figure rises to $96,000 when benefits such as health care and other insurance are included. The nature of CEO payWhile many people may think of a pay package as consisting of salary, bonus and some perks, those components make up only a small percentage of pay for the modern CEO. Many companies have heeded calls from shareholders to tie CEO compensation more closely to performance. As a result, a large proportion of pay packages consist of stock awards, which the CEO often can’t cash in for years, if at all, unless the company meets certain targets, typically a higher stock price or market value or improved operating profits. And if the CEO delivers on those metrics, companies often give them one-time rewards as incentives to stay on and not look for a bigger payday elsewhere.Shareholders can weigh in on a CEO’s pay package through “say on pay” votes at a company’s annual meeting. But the votes are non-binding and most pay plans pass with overwhelming support. The average “yes” vote at companies in this year’s survey was around 90%. Big rewards, lofty goalsAs CEO pay has grown significantly over the past few decades, criticism of the lofty payouts has largely come from worker advocates and certain members of Congress.Elon Musk’s pay package is so extraordinary that even the pope weighed in. Musk, the CEO of Tesla, received compensation valued at $132.3 billion, all in the form of stock awards. To actually get the shares, Musk must meet ambitious targets over the next 10 years for the company’s market value and Tesla’s electric vehicles, as well as his futuristic goals of developing a fleet of robotaxis and an army of humanoid robots. Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Shankh Mitra of Welltower received the second-largest compensation package in the survey at $821.1 million, the bulk of it in stock awards. Since October 2020, when he became CEO of the healthcare real estate investment trust, and October 2025, Welltower’s stock price tripled. Mitra can only receive the full compensation, beyond a $110,000 annual salary, after a 10-year period. CEO Hock Tan’s pay package at Broadcom, valued at $205.3 million, covers the years 2028-2030 — companies assign a value at the time the package is awarded — and is tied to Tan’s ability to greatly increase the revenue Broadcom generates from artificial intelligence, making it one of the few companies at this time to use AI as a benchmark in its compensation plans.“Use of AI considerations or metrics in incentive plans has not yet taken hold as a majority practice,” said Kelly Malafis, founding partner at Compensation Advisory Partners, in an email, although she expects that could change going forward. David Zaslav was at the center of a takeover battle that ended with him selling Warner Bros. to Paramount Skydance for $31 a share, up from $12.54 before reports of Paramount’s interest in a deal came out. For negotiating the deal at a premium and also exceeding certain financial and strategic goals, Warner gave Zaslav a pay package valued at $165 million, fourth largest in the survey. Since becoming CEO in 2007, Zaslav’s compensation has totaled $1.1 billion, according to Equilar. Big payouts for bankersCEOs of three the nation’s biggest banks got rewarded for yearslong efforts to retool their companies and revive a stagnant stock price. Goldman Sachs’ David Solomon’s pay package totaled almost $119 million — including stock valued at $80 million he can receive after five years. Goldman’s board pointed to the 57% gain in the company’s shares, as well as a hefty increase in its earnings per share. Solomon also sold off the company’s Apple Card portfolio after an unsuccessful effort to expand Goldman’s consumer-focused business. Jane Fraser of Citigroup received a pay package valued at $95.8 million — tops among the 27 women CEOs in this year’s survey and the highest-ever for a woman CEO in the survey’s history. Fraser received a one-time award valued at $25 million in restricted stock and options after being elected Citi’s chairman. She also got a one-time award for overseeing a wholesale reorganization of Citi into a leaner company, including laying off thousands of workers. Overall, the median compensation for women CEOs in the survey fell 2.6% to $18.1 million, compared to a 6.4% increase for their male counterparts to $17.7 billion. Wells Fargo gave CEO Charles Scharf a pay package worth $94.5 million after his yearslong effort to lead the bank back from a scandal involving fake bank accounts that landed Wells under federal supervision. And new scandals emerged along the way. The Federal Reserve finally let Wells leave the penalty box last year. Other notablesIn his last year as CEO of the conglomerate Berkshire Hathaway, Warren Buffett received compensation worth $389,488 — down 4% from the year prior. Meta Platforms CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s compensation was valued at $25.1 million and almost all of it involved costs for the company to provide security for him and his family, as well as the use of corporate aircraft. Jensen Huang of Nvidia, the most valuable publicly traded company, got a pay package valued at $36.3 million. He didn’t make the AP survey because Nvidia filed its proxy after April 30. __Editors Dorothea Degen and Paul Harloff, and reporters Bernard Condon, Matt Ott, Alex Veiga, Ken Sweet and Chris Rugaber contributed. 获取更多RSS:https://feedx.net https://feedx.site0 Comments 0 Shares 40 Views 0 Reviews

APNEWS.COMWorld shares are mostly higher, tracking Wall Street’s fresh records, and oil prices fallA dealer stands near the screens showing the Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI), the foreign exchange rate between U.S. dollar and South Korean won and the Korean Securities Dealers Automated Quotations (KOSDAQ) at a dealing room of Hana Bank in Seoul, South Korea, Wednesday, May 27, 2026. (AP Photo/Lee Jin-man)2026-05-27T03:31:25Z Shares were mostly higher in Europe and Asia on Wednesday and oil prices fell after the U.S. stock market rose to more records. In early European trading, Germany’s DAX gained 0.7% to 25,359.59, while the CAC 40 in Paris added 0.5% to 8,215.74. Britain’s FTSE 100 slipped 0.1% to 10,484.65.The future for the S&P 500 edged 0.1% higher while that for the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.2%. The boom in artificial intelligence drove heavy buying of computer chipmakers and other technology companies after the latest rally on Wall Street, led by a 19.3% gain for Micron Technology. It was the strongest force lifting the S&P 500 on Tuesday after analysts at UBS led by Timothy Arcuri raised their 12-month price target for the stock to $1,625 from $535. Micron closed at $895.88. In Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 also initially was lifted by gains for tech-related shares given but closed nearly unchanged at 64,999.41. It topped 66,000 earlier in the day. Computer chip equipment maker Tokyo Electron’s shares rose 2.1% and testing equipment maker Advantest gained 4.1%. Analysts are forecasting continued strength in demand for computer memory and that has been pushing share prices in South Korea and Taiwan to records this year. The Kospi in Seoul gained 2.3% to 8,228.70, as Samsung Electronics’ shares gained 2.3%. In Taiwan, the Taiex surged 1.7%. Elsewhere in Asia, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng lost 1.1% to 25,328.23 and the Shanghai Composite index shed 1.3% to 4,093.73. Read More Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 picked up 0.7% to 8,717.70 and in India the Sensex fell 0.1%.On Tuesday, U.S. stocks rose to records as the S&P 500 climbed 0.6% after trading resumed following Monday’s Memorial Day holiday. The Nasdaq composite rallied 1.2% and the Dow industrials dipped 0.2%.U.S. stocks were catching up with climbs for others around the world the day before, when President Donald Trump said negotiations with Iran on ending the war were “proceeding nicely.” “It looks like geopolitical tensions are no longer bothering investors as much as they did in previous weeks. Iran’s explicit dissatisfaction regarding the progress in talks over its nuclear program — or even US strikes — didn’t reverse hopes that the war will end soon,” Ipek Ozkardeskaya of Swissquote said in a commentary.Markets have rallied on hopes for a swift end to the war, but the situation remains unclear as fighting has continued in the region. Oil prices have been at the center of financial markets’ action since the United States and Israel attacked Iran in late February. The ensuing war has closed the Strait of Hormuz and kept oil tankers pent up in the Persian Gulf instead of delivering crude to customers worldwide. That in turn has driven up oil’s price and sent a wave of painful inflation around the world.U.S. households have been feeling discouraged about the economy because of accelerating inflation, and a report on Tuesday said consumer confidence edged downward in May, though the number was not as bad as economists expected. It followed a report on Friday that said sentiment among U.S. consumers hit its lowest level on record. Early Wednesday, the price for a barrel of Brent crude, the international standard, fell $3 to $93.89 a barrel. The price for a barrel of U.S crude oil fell $2.94 to $91.89. Lower oil prices helped pull yields down in the U.S. bond market, which eased the pressure on Wall Street. The yield on the 10-year Treasury fell to 4.47% from 4.56% late Friday. The U.S. dollar rose to 159.33 Japanese yen from 159.30 yen. The euro rose to $1.1644 from $1.1631. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMReal Madrid icon will retire from football after 2026 World CupReal Madrid icon will retire from football after 2026 World CupReal Madrid have already said a number of goodbyes in the last week, and later in the summer, they will say another – but not to someone at the club, but rather, one of their greatest ever midfielders.Dani Carvajal, David Alaba and Alvaro Arbeloa all made their final bows at the Bernabeu during last weekend’s victory over Athletic Club, with Real Madrid choosing against renewing all of the trio’s respective contracts. They will seek pastures new in the summer, which is exactly what Luka Modric, who is a former teammate of all three, did in 2025.Modric left Real Madrid at the end of the 2024-25 season to join Milan, but despite impressing in his first season in Italy, he has decided that it will also be his last as a professional footballer. According to Nicolo Schira (via Diario AS), the 40-year-old midfielder plans to announce his retirement after the upcoming 2026 World Cup.Modric will play at the tournament for Croatia, but it will be the final act of a glittering career. In total, he has made well over 850 club appearances across the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Real Madrid and Milan, while he has also racked up 196 caps for his country – and he should surpass 200 at the World Cup.Modric call influenced by Milan’s Champions League snubAccording to the aforementioned report, Modric would have considered another year in football if Milan had qualified for next season’s Champions League, but they fell short after losing at home to Cagliari last weekend. That failure made up his mind, and he will now go out on the biggest stage.Real Madrid, who regretted letting Modric leave last summer, are sure to honour Modric when he does hang up his boots. He made 597 appearances for the Bernabeu club over a 13-year spell, and he also picked up 28 trophies during that time.0 Comments 0 Shares 39 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMFormer Ohio State star made a big impact for Notre Dame freshmanNotre Dame football has used its power to recruit multiple sons of former players, both legacy’s and not, and recently Larry Fitzgerald spoke about the impact that a former star Ohio State wide receiver had on his son Devin. The soon-to-be Hall of Famer recently spoke about the connection on the “in the Bayou” podcast with Tyrann Mathieu, that current Arizona Cardinal Marvin Harrison Jr. has with Devin, as the two met and immediately sparked a relationship.Harrison was unaware of who he was speaking to, which made the interaction more genuine, as towards the end of their chat Devin finally told him who his father was. Larry is one of the all-time great Cardinals, and due to his kindness, the Fitzgerald family will always be rooting for him. As for Devin, while his father was one of the best receivers of his generation, anytime you get to sit down with a current players and pick their brains is always a good idea. Hopefully he took more than a relationship away from the conversation and can use that during his time in South Bend. After the younger Fitzgerald’s showing during the spring game, it very much looks like that was the case.Larry Fitzgerald shares a great Marvin Harrison Jr. story involving his son 👀"Devin didn’t tell him who he was… and Marv spent 45 minutes out there on the bench after he got done eating and chopped it up with my son… I’m always pulling for Marvin Jr." pic.twitter.com/QhhnHIlWec— In The Bayou With Tyrann Mathieu (@InTheBayouPod) May 25, 2026Contact/Follow us @IrishWireND on X (Formerly Twitter), and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Notre Dame news, notes, and opinions.Follow Mike on X: @MikeFChenThis article originally appeared on Fighting Irish Wire: Notre Dame freshman got some off-season help from a former OSU star0 Comments 0 Shares 39 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMMikel Arteta receives Manager of the Season awardMikel Arteta receives Manager of the Season awardMikel Arteta has received the award for the Premier League’s Manager of the Season, after leading Arsenal to the title in 2025/26.Mikel Arteta and his team with his Premier League Manager of the Season awardMikel Arteta attended the League Managers Association awards on Tuesday, where he was awarded the Premier League’s Manager of the Season award for 2025/26.As shown above, Arteta brought his coaching team along with him to celebrate the award, a couple of days after they were lifting the Premier League trophy on the Selhurst Park pitch.Photo by Michael Regan/Getty Images For Premier LeagueIt’s not exactly difficult to see how Arteta has won the award, with Arsenal proving the best team in the Premier League under his management this season, despite not necessarily being the league’s biggest spenders.Analysis by Twenty First Group this week put Arsenal as the Premier League’s second-biggest overperformers this season, in terms of the money invested in their team. Only Sunderland were ahead of the Gunners, having qualified for Europe as a newly-promoted team.Though there are some other factors, like Arsenal’s use of the academy and clever recruitment, it’s undoubtedly the case that Arteta’s coaching has raised things up another level compared to what was expected.Photo by Michael Regan/Getty Images For Premier LeagueArteta doesn’t have much time to celebrate the award though, as his team will be playing in the Champions League final in Budapest on Saturday. Another consequence of the manager’s strong season in charge.0 Comments 0 Shares 39 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMHare's walkoff sends Frankfort to states, wins 1-0 over MoorefieldSHORT GAP, W.Va. — After 6 1/3 scoreless innings, the game's lone run came on the final pitch. It came off the bat of Jaxon Hare, sending Frankfort to the state tournament with a 1-0 win over Moorefield on Tuesday in the Class AA, Region II final."When the top of the order's up, we think we have a good chance to score," Frankfort manager Matt Miller said. "(Blake Jacobs) really squared up the ball, got it to the gap for a double."Jaxon had two really nice hits late in the game, up the middle, set the stage there. And they're not gonna throw Blake out at the plate, so both those guys stepped up huge. They have their whole careers, it's not the first time and hopefully it won't be the last."With one out, Jacobs (Charleston commit) hit a hard line drive to left for a double."I love our baseball team, the fight that these guys have," Moorefield skipper Wade Armentrout said. "They're good competitors, I think in a game like this, you appreciate the hard work that these guys put in all season. Played a tough schedule to get ready to play this game."Hare stepped into the batter's box and worked a 2-1 count, then sent a ground ball up the middle to walk it off.Hare had two of five hits for the Falcons (22-7), who had a week in between games awaiting its opponent after several weather postponements."I think hitting it really impacted us," Miller said of the lengthy break. "We were on a roll, and then we didn't get any live arm action for a couple days. I guess it was one full week, but it felt like longer."The story of the game was the pitcher's duel between Frankfort's Lanson Orndorf and Moorefield's Mathew Iman.Orndorf (Charleston) was a hit shy of a perfect game with eight strikeouts in 72 pitches."We're fielding .980 (fielding percentage) which is unbelievable for a high school team, that's major league level numbers," Miller said. "So we've been good defensively all year, especially around our infield. Lanson doesn't give up a whole lot of hard contact either, which makes defense a little easier."Caleb Flinn recorded the lone hit for the Yellow Jackets (15-12), a lead-off double to right center in the third.Iman also struck out eight across six shutout frames, allowing three hits and four walks. He stranded eight runners, including at least one in each of his final five frames."This is probably the best I've seen him pitch all year," Armentrout said. "Had command of all his pitches, his fastball was moving. He was able to control. He's a guy that everybody on the team can get behind and follow. He's a great leader, even as a freshman."Iman worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the fifth and left a pair of runners in the second and sixth innings.Five of Iman's eight punch outs were called strikes."He defied his scouting report a little bit and worked the inner half of the plate, which was not part of our plan," Miller said. "He really executed the inner half of the plate, which we had our guys taking the plate away up on the white line. If you can dot an inside fastball when guys are on the line, it's really hard to hit."Moorefield improved its win total by 11 games after a 4-23 finish last spring."Those guys were disappointed from last year's team," Armentrout said. "They know that they underachieved. Just focused on some different aspects of the game. Really worked hard, came to practice everyday wanting to get better. They did that, and this team's gonna do great things."Frankfort advanced to its 11th state tournament and third straight. The Falcons have played for a state title the past two seasons, reaching the Class AAA final last season after winning the Class AA tournament in 2024."You saw how much lack of excitement it was for the regional plaque," Miller said. "That's not what we're about anymore, that's not what we play for. They were walking off and they said we don't even need a picture with that."Our goal is not the regional. We do expect to compete every year for a state title right now. That's what these guys goal is and that's what we're gonna go after in a couple weeks."The Class AA tournament begins on Monday, June 8, at Marshall University's Jack Cook Field.Seedings and first-round matchups are to be determined.0 Comments 0 Shares 39 Views 0 Reviews -

Prior to this week, the Lions’ program has only consisted of Phase 1 and 2 of the offseason. That’s primarily a focus on conditioning, rehab, and some individual and positional drills. The beginning of OTAs means the Lions can now do some team drills, including 7-on-7s and 11-on-11s. Of course, fully padded and full-contract practices are still off the table until a week into training camp. With the media expected to have access once a week for OTAs and for both mandatory minicamps toward the end of June, it’ll be a good chance to answer some of the biggest questions surrounding the team. And with coach Dan Campbell expected to talk to the media several times over the next month, we can get information directly from the main source. So on this week’s PODcast, the crew discusses what we’re hoping to see from the next few weeks of OTAs. As per annual tradition, one of the most noteworthy things we learn are injury updates for the players. Getting news on the statuses of Kerby Joseph, Sam LaPorta, and Brian Branch will be of high priority this week. Additionally, with no rookie minicamp this year, OTAs will be our first look at Detroit’s 2026 NFL Draft class on the field. For those eager to learn how quickly Blake Miller, Derrick Moore and the rest will fit in with NFL talent, we should start getting answers by the end of the week. Finally, we also discuss some of the biggest and most interesting positional battles that are just starting to kick off. Whether it’s the logjam of depth in the secondary, the starting job open at left guard, or the maneuvering at linebacker, there’s plenty to keep an eye on. And on this episode of the PODcast, we talk about it all.The show actually kicks off with talk about Jack Campbell’s extension, and what it means for the rest of the Lions’ 2023 draft class. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMLast time each New York sports team won a championshipFor a city that proudly calls itself the sports capital of the world, New York has experienced more championship heartbreak than many fans would like to admit. Boardroom’s list of the last time each major men’s New York sports team won a championship serves as both a reminder of past glory and a reflection of just how difficult sustained success can be in one of the biggest sports markets on the planet. From legendary dynasties to decades-long droughts, every team on this list carries a unique history that continues to shape the expectations of its fanbase today. What makes New York sports different is the pressure. Championships are not simply celebrated here — they are demanded. Fans expect banners, iconic moments, and superstars who thrive under the brightest lights. That pressure has produced unforgettable eras, whether it was the Yankees dominating baseball, the Giants pulling off dramatic Super Bowl runs, or the Islanders building a hockey dynasty in the early 1980s. At the same time, it has also created some of the longest and most painful title droughts in professional sports.RELATED: Most recent World Series championsOne of the biggest storylines in New York sports right now is the resurgence of the Knicks, who are back in the NBA Finals for the first time in decades. After years of rebuilding, disappointment, and endless criticism, Madison Square Garden is finally hosting meaningful basketball again on the league’s biggest stage. Their return has reignited excitement across the city and reminded fans just how electric New York becomes when one of its iconic franchises is competing for a championship. Whether the Knicks can finally end their title drought or not, their Finals run has already become one of the defining sports moments of the year. Some teams on this list are still chasing the magic they once had, while others are desperately searching for a breakthrough that has never come. Yet despite the frustration, hope never disappears in New York. Every season begins with belief that this could finally be the year the city gets another parade down the Canyon of Heroes. Until then, these championship years remain frozen in sports history and permanently etched into the identity of each franchise.New York Giants — 2012New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning (10) celebrates after Super Bowl XLVI against the New England Patriots at Lucas Oil Stadium. Rebilas-USA TODAY SportsThe Giants’ last championship came during the 2011 NFL season when they defeated the Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI, officially crowned in 2012. Led by Eli Manning, New York once again spoiled New England’s hopes and cemented one of the most unlikely championship runs in franchise history. That era was defined by clutch postseason performances, resilient defense, and the ability to rise when expectations were lowest. Since then, the franchise has struggled to consistently return to contender status, making that title feel even more significant for Giants fans.New York Yankees — 2009Members of the New York Yankees hoist the World Series championship trophy after defeating the Philadelphia Phillies 7-4 in game six of the 2009 World Series at Yankee Stadium. It was the franchise’s 27th championship and the first in the new Yankee Stadium, reinforcing the organization’s reputation as baseball’s gold standard. However, by Yankees standards, a decade-plus without another title feels like an eternity. Despite regular playoff appearances and superstar talent, fans continue to measure every season against championship expectations.New York Rangers — 1994New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, his son Andrew, and first wife Donna Hanover celebrates with the Stanley Cup after the Rangers defeated Vancouver 3-2 in game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals at Madison Square Garden June 14, 1994. Mark Messier became a city legend after guaranteeing a crucial playoff victory before eventually leading the team to the Cup. That championship remains iconic because of both the pressure surrounding the drought and the dramatic nature of the postseason run. Even with several strong teams since then, the Rangers have been unable to bring another Stanley Cup back to Madison Square Garden.RELATED: NBA’s last 5 championsNew York Mets — 1986From left, New York Mets Rick Aguilera, Bobby Ojeda, Howard Johnson and Kevin Elster celebrate on the field after the Mets defeated the Boston Red Sox in game 7 of the 1986 World Series at Shea Stadium Oct. 27, 1986. Powered by stars like Darryl Strawberry and Keith Hernandez, the team combined swagger, talent, and resilience throughout its championship run. Led by stars like Mike Bossy and Bryan Trottier, the franchise dominated the NHL with elite scoring and remarkable consistency. Their 1983 championship marked the end of that historic run, but it also became the last title the organization would win. Although the Islanders have returned to relevance in recent years, fans still long for a return to dynasty-level success.New York Knicks — 1973General view of the in-season tournament court logo during warmups before a game between the New York Knicks and the Miami Heat at Madison Square Garden. Legends like Walt Frazier and Willis Reed helped establish one of the most respected eras in franchise history. Since then, the Knicks have experienced countless rebuilds, playoff disappointments, and superstar pursuits without another championship breakthrough. Still, the franchise remains one of the league’s biggest brands, and any future title would instantly become one of the city’s defining sports moments.RELATED: Top 10 current New York City athletesNew York Jets — 1969New York Jets defensive line Verlon Biggs (86), Ralph Baker (51), John Elliott (80), Paul Rochester (72), and Gerry Philbin (81) against the Baltimore Colts during Super Bowl III at the Orange Bowl. That upset became one of the most iconic moments in NFL history and helped legitimize the AFL before the league merger. Unfortunately for Jets fans, the franchise has spent more than five decades trying to recreate that success. The long championship drought has become part of the team’s identity, making every promising season feel especially meaningful.Brooklyn Nets — NeverThe Brooklyn Nets NBA Cup logo at center court before tip-off against the Orlando Magic at Barclays Center. The franchise has come close several times, including back-to-back Finals appearances in the early 2000s and the superstar era featuring Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, and James Harden. Despite assembling elite talent over the years, injuries, chemistry issues, and playoff disappointments have repeatedly prevented a breakthrough. Until that first championship arrives, the Nets will continue carrying the weight of unfinished business in New York basketball.0 Comments 0 Shares 39 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMTrieu: These Michigan State football targets are making official visits this weekendMichigan State’s first official visit weekend for the 2027 class is here. The Spartans have a good group coming in to start things off.Among the headliners is Detroit Country Day four-star tight end Anthony Cartwright. Cartwright is a longtime target of the Spartans and his dad is an alum, but his recruitment has also been national since his freshman year. Oregon and LSU are two of his top schools, and he just wrapped a visit to Stanford. Miami and Michigan are also still very much in the mix. This will be a very important visit for MSU, as it likely will be the last time they get the 6-foot-5, 235-pound Cartwright on campus prior to a June 28 commitment.More: Trieu: Michigan State O-line target R.J. Clem 'the whole package'Columbus (Ohio) Academy defensive end Reinaldo Perez is another four-star who will be on campus. Perez is an athletic 6-foot-6, 240-pound edge defender who could move around some in college. Indiana is trending up after he took an official with the Hoosiers. Ohio State, Michigan and others are also still in pursuit. Perez has been to MSU several times already, including in April for a spring practice. Another big-framed defensive lineman visiting is 6-foot-6, 260-pound Marcellus Young Casario from Rabun Gap-Nachoochee in Georgia. The Spartans offered in March, and defensive line coach Winston DeLattiboudere III has done a great job even getting MSU an official here. Young Casario also is considering in-state Georgia and Georgia Tech, as well as Arkansas.Four-star Noblesville (Indiana) offensive lineman Caleb Johnson is a really good all-around prospect who, at 6-foot-5, 275 pounds, could play just about any position on the line. Offensive line coach Nick Tabacca offered Johnson as soon as he took the job in January and head coach Pat Fitzgerald was at Noblesville two days later.Johnson then took a late January visit to campus. There is stiff competition here, though, in the form of in-state Indiana, Iowa, Auburn and Missouri. Kentucky, Illinois and others still are making attempts as well.Wide receiver is still a need in the class, and Ramsey (New Jersey) Don Bosco Prep’s Isaiah Alvarez will take his Spartan official this weekend. A quick-footed, skilled 6-foot, 170-pound three-star, Alvarez already took an official to Colorado and also will visit Rutgers and Nebraska before making a decision.In-state safety Don Spillers from Detroit King will be on his official. The buzz is MSU is the team to beat, though Illinois and Louisville are making attempts. Recently offered La Grange Park (Illinois) Nazareth Academy prospect Henry Sakalas will get to campus for the first time. A 6-foot-4, 190-pound safety, he could move to linebacker in college. Illinois and Nebraska are among the competition there. A true high school linebacker, Bloomington (Illinois) Central Catholic’s Matthew Brady will be in East Lansing. Brady has been one of the big risers in the Midwest this spring. He had no Power Four offers at the start of April and now is considering MSU, Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska and others. A 6-foot-4, 220-pound high school quarterback, Brady has connected well with Spartan linebackers coach Max Bullough.Powder Springs (Georgia) McEachern cornerback Kayden Battle will be visiting, and the Rivals Recruiting Prediction Machine has it as largely an MSU-Pittsburgh battle for the 5-foot-11, 170-pound Battle.A mid-week official visit will come from University of Calgary transfer Franklin Ibelo, a 6-foot-7, 340-pound defensive tackle. He has 30 career tackles (2½ for loss).Allen Trieu covers Midwest football recruiting for On3. He has been featured on the Big Ten Network on its annual Signing Day Show. His Michigan and Michigan State recruiting columns appear weekly at detroitnews.com.This article originally appeared on The Detroit News: Trieu: Michigan State Spartans football welcomes official visitors0 Comments 0 Shares 39 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMBarcelona in talks with Premier League club over €92m forward dealBarcelona in talks with Premier League club over €92m forward dealBarcelona, led by sporting director Deco, are moving quickly to secure their first signing of the summer transfer window. The Catalans are planning to sign at least two new forwards, and the first of those deals could be agreed sooner rather than later. It’s no secret that Barcelona want a new number nine to replace Robert Lewandowski, but their efforts to sign either one of Julian Alvarez or Joao Pedro have been in vain thus far, considering that Atletico Madrid and Chelsea are not prepared to do a deal on the Catalans’ terms. This has led to different options being explored, and one of those is Anthony Gordon.Barcelona are well aware of Gordon, given they faced him three times during the 2025-26 Champions League. He played as a centre forward on numerous occasions for Newcastle, while he is natural on the left wing, which is another area that Deco is keen to address in the summer – especially if Marcus Rashford cannot be retained.Earlier this week, Deco travelled to England to discuss terms with Gordon’s representatives, and now, the Daily Mail have reported that club-to-club talks are taking place between Barcelona and Newcastle, with a deal in the region of £80m (€92m) being discussed in regards to the England international.Gordon has agreement in principle with BarcelonaOn top of this, Sport say that Gordon has already agreed contract terms with Barcelona. He is said to very attracted to the idea of joining Hansi Flick’s squad – more so than Bayern Munich and Liverpool, who are also said to be in the race to sign him this summer.Gordon would be a very interesting signing for Barcelona. He fits very well into the way that Flick wants his side to play, but it would be a lot of money to spend on a player that is not a natural number nine – nor will he displace Raphinha as the starting left winger.0 Comments 0 Shares 39 Views 0 Reviews

Negotiations are officially underway between the two clubs after Barcelona’s sporting department established direct contacts with the Magpies.Complete consensus at BarcelonaThis comes after the Blaugrana sporting director, Deco, flew to England earlier this week to kickstart negotiations for the England international. As reported already, the Barcelona hierarchy, including president-elect Joan Laporta, manager Hansi Flick, and Deco himself, is completely aligned in their assessment of the 25-year-old forward. The new top priority at Barcelona. (Photo by Stu Forster/Getty Images)Management is highly convinced that Gordon possesses immense developmental potential, with his explosive pace, intense pressing, and clinical directness perfectly matching the wide profile required for the team’s tactical blueprint. Despite holding heavy interest and contract offers from Bayern Munich and several elite Premier League clubs, Gordon has explicitly given priority to Barcelona. Financial hurdlesWhile the player’s personal desire gives the Catalan club a substantial advantage, finalising the deal presents a massive economic challenge. Newcastle United are fully prepared for Gordon’s departure but are demanding a steep transfer package edging towards £80 million. Gordon will not come cheap. (Photo by Peter Nicholls/Getty Images)Barcelona cannot meet this valuation upfront due to financial constraints and must offload existing squad members to successfully register him. However, the board is actively discussing a creative deal structure involving performance add-ons to bridge the gap.Gordon’s individual campaign highlights why Europe’s elite are circling. He completed a highly productive season with Newcastle, netting 17 goals across all competitions. The 25-year-old’s efficiency was particularly impressive on the continental stage, where he broke club records by scoring an astonishing 10 goals in 12 UEFA Champions League appearances.0 Comments 0 Shares 39 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMColts rehabbing QB Daniel Jones already participating in OTAs on limited basisWESTFIELD, INDIANA - JULY 29: Daniel Jones #17 of the Indianapolis Colts looks on during the Indianapolis Colts Training Camp at Grand Park on July 29, 2025 in Westfield, Indiana. (Photo by Justin Casterline/Getty Images) | Getty Images The Indianapolis Colts published a quick clip of Monday’s OTA practice, which wasn’t open to the local media, and one thing to note is that starting quarterback Daniel Jones is already out there throwing in individual drills: This video reflects what the Colts predicted in recent weeks: That Daniel Jones (Achilles) would take some snaps in individual drills this offseason. Not expecting him in full team periods, but he’s certainly on schedule. No PUP list for training camp expected at this point. https://t.co/Li21UXur5l— Stephen Holder (@HolderStephen) May 27, 2026Jones, who suffered a season-ending torn Achilles during Week 14 late last season, is still rehabbing from that significant lower leg injury. However, the hope from both him, his representation during prior contract negotiations, and the Colts is that he’d be ready for training camp’s kickoff in mid-July of this upcoming summer. It looks like that optimism could be on track to realistically—and eventually, become a reality in about two months or so, given his current trajectory. That being said, Jones is only throwing in individual drills right now, and the expectation seems to be that he won’t be participating in the 11-on-11 non-contact drills during OTAs over the next few weeks—as the Colts take caution and patience with their new ‘$100 million man’ (*factoring in contract incentives of course). It appears as though Jones still has a bit to go in his ongoing recovery, but his progress is no doubt encouraging. The Colts open the 2026 regular season on September 13th, hosting the Baltimore Ravens. The ultimate goal for the Colts and Jones will be ensuring that he’s fully ready to go and medically cleared for that Week 1 game.0 Comments 0 Shares 39 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMSpurs, Newcastle, Fulham and Sunderland keen on relegated starSpurs, Newcastle, Fulham and Sunderland keen on relegated starTottenham Lead Growing Chase for Aaron Wan-Bissaka After West Ham DropWest Ham United’s relegation has triggered uncertainty across the squad, and Aaron Wan-Bissaka increasingly looks destined to become one of the first major departures from the London Stadium. According to TeamTalk, Tottenham Hotspur, Everton, Newcastle United, Fulham and Sunderland are all monitoring the experienced defender ahead of a pivotal summer window.Photo IMAGOThere is little surprise that interest is accelerating quickly. Reliable, experienced and still among the strongest one-on-one defenders in English football, Wan-Bissaka suddenly represents rare value in an inflated market.West Ham Prepare Major ResetThe wider backdrop is impossible to ignore. Relegation has forced West Ham into a significant rethink financially and structurally, with several senior players expected to leave as the club prepares for life in the Championship.“Sources indicate the Hammers would likely accept a fee in the region of £10million.”That figure immediately changes the conversation. For a player with Premier League pedigree, European experience and international recognition with DR Congo, £10 million feels remarkably modest in the current market.Wan-Bissaka only arrived at West Ham last year, yet circumstances have shifted dramatically. While he still has five years remaining on his deal, the club are reportedly eager to reduce a heavy wage bill and create flexibility for a broader rebuild.Photo IMAGOTottenham and Everton CircleTottenham’s interest makes tactical sense. Defensive reliability has often been questioned in North London over recent seasons, and Wan-Bissaka offers security, athleticism and positional discipline. Spurs also value versatility across defensive systems, particularly with another demanding campaign ahead domestically and in Europe.Everton’s pursuit carries a more personal connection. David Moyes remains a longstanding admirer of Wan-Bissaka and reportedly views him as an ideal fit for the next stage of Everton’s project.“As we have consistently reported, Everton are prioritising the addition of a new right-back.”That pursuit may intensify quickly if West Ham show willingness to negotiate around the reported valuation.Newcastle, Fulham and Sunderland Remain AlertNewcastle’s interest reflects the growing demands placed upon clubs competing across multiple fronts. Eddie Howe understands the importance of defensive depth, particularly with European football once again stretching his squad.Photo IMAGOFulham, meanwhile, continue searching for proven Premier League experience capable of strengthening Marco Silva’s disciplined structure. Sunderland’s involvement perhaps says most about the ambition now growing around the newly promoted side. Pursuing a player of Wan-Bissaka’s stature signals serious intent.Photo IMAGOHis profile may rise even further in the coming months. Wan-Bissaka is expected to feature for DR Congo at the World Cup, adding fresh international exposure at precisely the moment transfer discussions are intensifying. Our View – EPL Index AnalysisFor Tottenham, Wan-Bissaka looks like a sensible addition. Spurs fans have watched the team struggle repeatedly in defensive transition, and a full-back with elite recovery speed and tackling ability would immediately improve stability. Some supporters may still question his attacking output, but many would prioritise defensive consistency after recent frustrations.Newcastle fans would likely view this as smart squad building. With Champions League and domestic demands increasing again, depth matters enormously. Wan-Bissaka offers reliability and experience without requiring an enormous transfer fee.Fulham supporters may see the move differently. There is admiration for his defensive strengths, particularly in one-on-one situations, but questions may remain about whether his style fully suits Fulham’s possession phases under Marco Silva. Still, at £10 million, the risk feels relatively low.Sunderland fans, meanwhile, would simply be energised by being linked with a player of this calibre. Competing for established Premier League names represents a major statement from a club determined to re-establish itself at the highest level.0 Comments 0 Shares 39 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMYankees’ Former Infielder ‘Fighting For My Life’ During Rival Red Sox ImplosionOAKLAND, CALIFORNIA - AUGUST 25: Isiah Kiner-Falefa #12 of the New York Yankees prepares in the dugout before the game against the Oakland Athletics at RingCentral Coliseum on August 25, 2022 in Oakland, California. (Photo by Lachlan Cunningham/Getty Images)Getty ImagesThe New York Yankees enjoyed a surge at the plate on Tuesday, posting 15 runs in a blowout over the Kansas City Royals. And perhaps the most rewarding part of the victory was the fact that the momentum was spread out across the roster in historic fashion. “Attacking early and often while racking up a season-high 24 hits — 21 before facing a position player pitching in the ninth — the Yankees cruised to their third straight win, 15-1 over the Royals at Kauffman Stadium,” Greg Joyce wrote for the New York Post. “For the first time in franchise history, every member of the starting lineup had at least two hits.”But while the Yankees enjoyed an offensive breakout, their old friend voiced some frustration as his new team struggles.FORBES | By Peter ChawagaBlue Jays’ Former Starter Leaves MLB After Injury SetbacksFormer New York Yankees Infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa Voices Career Concerns With Boston Red SoxBoston Red Sox infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa, who was a polarizing presence for the Yankees in 2022 and 2023, has been unable to earn consistent playing time as the team struggles. In 54 at-bats for the Red Sox so far he is slashing .278/.350/.370, but he noted that he feels every plate appearance is high pressure because of how sparingly he gets to play.“I’m fighting for my career, I’m fighting for my life, I’m scrapping for every at bat I can get,” Kiner-Falefa said on Tuesday, according to Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald. “Understanding I’m getting older and my playing time has been cut, I’m not even playing at all, so I’m in there fighting for my life, fighting for my career…”FORBES | By Peter ChawagaPhillies’ 6-Year Veteran Cuts Ties With New Team After Just 9 GamesNew York Yankees Former Infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa Responds To Boston Red Sox’s Playoff HopesThe former Yankee might be especially frustrated with his lack of opportunities for the Red Sox given their overall struggles. The team parted ways with long-time manager Alex Cora a month ago, but things haven’t improved in the standings, and the team sits in last place in the American League East division.Kiner-Falefa referenced the larger team struggles immediately after he underscored the pressure he is feeling to salvage his career in limited at-bats.“We’re lucky to be in the American League, we just got to keep going,” Kiner-Falefa added, noting the parity that keeps the Red Sox’s playoff hopes somewhat alive. “We’ve got to keep going and hopefully we string some together and other teams lose, we’re honestly just lucky to be in the American League."This article was originally published on Forbes.com0 Comments 0 Shares 39 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMInside Kyle Busch’s Lasting NASCAR Legacy and the Shocking Illness That Ended His Life at 41 (Exclusive)Credit: Brexton Busch/InstagramNEED TO KNOWKyle Busch, a two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion, was widely regarded as one of the sport's most talented driversBusch’s sudden death at 41 shocked fans and the racing community, leaving a significant void in motorsportsHe and his wife Samantha founded the Bundle of Joy Fund, which has helped over 100 families through IVF grantsLike nearly everything in Kyle Busch’s life, his death happened quickly. On May 10 the man who lived for speed — and possessed an otherworldly ability to control his car while roaring around a racetrack at more than 200 mph — radioed his crew during the final laps of New York’s Watkins Glen International, requesting that a doctor meet him on his bus. “Tell him I need him after the race, please,” Busch said. “I’m gonna need a shot.” Ten days later Busch, who still hadn’t shaken the severe sinus cold that began as a persistent cough, collapsed while practicing in a race simulator. “I’ve got an individual,” one of Busch’s coworkers told a 911 operator, “that [has] shortness of breath, very hot, thinks he’s going to pass out, and is . . . coughing up some blood.”Busch, who was rushed to an undisclosed hospital in Charlotte, N.C., died 24 hours later on May 21 at age 41 after his sinus infection progressed into severe bilateral pneumonia and sepsis. The sudden death of the NASCAR legend, considered one of the most talented, respected and accomplished drivers in the sport, not only came as a shock to his family, millions of NASCAR fans and fellow drivers but also left an irreplaceable void in the world of motorsports. “Kyle is the Michael Jordan of NASCAR,” champion driver Daniel Suárez tells PEOPLE, summing up the impact of the wheelman known by the nickname Rowdy because of his intense work ethic and, especially early in his career, his hard-charging driving style. “His legacy is going to live forever.” Chances are, even if someone didn’t know anything about NASCAR, they probably knew Busch’s name. Over the course of his 25-year career, the married, doting father of two notched the most wins of any driver, with 234 total victories across NASCAR’s top three national series, paired with two Cup Series championships. His insatiable push for perfection was still in high gear in the days before his tragic death when, hours after his final victory, at the Ecosave 200 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race on May 15, he told a reporter that he was more focused on embracing each win than on worrying about career stats: “Take whatever you can get, man. You never know when the last one’s going to be, so cherish them all.” Kyle Busch with his family in February 2026Credit: Sean Gardner/GettyBy all accounts Busch was born to race. A Las Vegas native, his father, Tom, worked as a mechanic at a Ford dealership before becoming a stock-car driver and winning several local championships. By the age of 6, Busch could often be found driving a homemade go-cart around the family’s neighborhood, and at 16, he made his professional racing debut in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck series. “You think I’m a pretty good race car driver?” Busch’s older brother Kurt, a NASCAR Hall of Famer, said in 2001. “Wait until you see my brother.” Before long, Busch’s raw talent, outspoken nature and seemingly endless string of victories had earned him legions of fans — and plenty of vocal critics. “He had a ridiculous amount of God-given talent,” fellow driver Joey Logano told reporters on May 23 ahead of the Coca-Cola 600, a race Busch was expected to compete in before his death. “He was fiery, he had the will to win—he was going to do whatever he had to do to make that happen.” Busch met his future wife, Samantha, a Purdue University undergrad who was working as a promotional model—and had no idea who the famous driver was — at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 2007. They married in 2010 and five years later became parents to their first child, Brexton, now 11. “Kyle has always been my rock,” Samantha, a 39-year-old lifestyle blogger and IVF advocate, previously told PEOPLE while discussing the couple’s infertility journey as they tried to have their second child, Lennix, 4, who was born via a surrogate in 2022. “So many people only know the aggressive and strong-willed side of him. . . . But the Kyle that I know is so different than that. Every time I feel like I’m falling apart, he picks me back up again.” The couple’s path to having their second child—described by Busch as “a trying and a painful journey”—inspired them to launch their nonprofit Bundle of Joy Fund, which has provided more than $2 million in grants since 2015and has helped other parents welcome 111 babies through IVF. Busch was still at the top of his game when he was hit by his sinus infection. By then the man who once stopped speaking to his older brother for more than a year — after the two crashed during the 2007 NASCAR All-Star Race — had toned down his win-at-all-costs persona and become increasingly focused on his family, who cheered him on at races. But longtime rival Brad Keselowski could tell something was off when he saw Busch on a plane days before his death. “Kyle is normally a fairly gregarious person, very outgoing — and he wasn’t,” Keselowski tells PEOPLE. “He sat down one row behind me and next to me and fell asleep right away, and I could tell he wasn’t feeling well.” Keselowski “didn’t really think that much of it,” but it would become the last time they were face-to-face. And then he kind of got to that point where his body couldn’t compensate anymore, and everything kind of fell apart at once.”Follow your favorite athletes on and off the field with PEOPLE's free sports newsletter — sign up now!Kyle Busch with his son, BrextonCredit: Kyle Busch/InstagramOn May 24, three days after Busch’s death, the suddenness of his passing was palpable amid the exhaust fumes and roaring engines before the start of the Coca-Cola 600 at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. Thousands of still-reeling fans packed the stands and watched as Busch’s family gathered in the grass near pit stall No. 3 while Kurt laid eight (Busch’s longtime race car number) white roses on the ground. “There were people who were saying we shouldn’t be racing,” says NASCAR driver AJ Allmendinger, admitting he could feel the celebrated driver’s presence at the massive stadium. “Can you imagine if we didn’t race this race? SPORTS.YAHOO.COMDerek Dixon reveals interesting note about Arizona's pursuit of himWhile the two programs haven't met on the court since 2007, the North Carolina Tar Heels and Arizona Wildcats' basketball programs are striving to develop a bit of a rivalry off the court. First, it was the Tommy Lloyd situation with North Carolina reportedly pursuing him before he opted to stay in Tuscon with the Wildcats. Now, a recent quote from a former Tar Heel and current Wildcat is making the rounds to ignite the rivalry a bit. While appearing on The Field of 68, former UNC guard Derek Dixon was speaking on why Arizona was a fit in terms of his transfer there. But in the answer, he revealed something that is troubling to hear for UNC fans or even college basketball fans in general. "They all seemed to reallly know my game, they had recruited me out of high school and they had just kept up with me throughout the season," Dixon said.“They (Arizona) kept up with me throughout the season”Can’t argue against tampering because almost every school does it now and they’re rarely punished but it’s definitely a choice to admit it on a talk show 🤷♂️😅 pic.twitter.com/SCNQfYwg6k— UNC Zone (@unc_zone) May 27, 2026Look, tampering is a big issue in college athletics right now with how the transfer portal and NIL has expanded. Programs are recruiting 365 days and checking in with players on other teams. I don't blame Arizona or Lloyd at all because all of college basketball is doing it, so why not? This speaks to the bigger problem we have with college athletics overall. There's no end in sight for it, either. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWashington Huskies track & field sending 20 women to NCAA West PrelimsWashington women's track and field has 20 athletes competing at the NCAA West Preliminaries in Fayetteville, Arkansas, starting Wednesday.Let's meet the Huskies vying for bids to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon.Sara Borton, pole vaultBorton, a senior from Ohio who transferred to Washington in 2023 from Tennessee, sat out the 2025 season while recovering from injury. She finished 10th at the Big Ten Championships with a season-best clearance of 4.23m, her best result since the Don Kirby Invitational in February, and is seeded 26th in the field.Mia Cochran, 1500m and 5000mCochran, who joined Washington from Arkansas in 2025, is one of three athletes who will compete at the Prelims in multiple events. The senior is seeded 17th in the 1500m with a qualifying time of 4:09.95 and 28th in the 5000m at 15:41.53. She finished 8th in the Big Ten final in the 1500m and was 16th in the 5000m two weekends ago.Sofia Cosculluela, heptathlon & 100m hurdlesCosculluela has already punched her ticket to Eugene in the heptathlon, qualifying as the top seed in the 24-woman field after finishing sixth at the Outdoor Championships as a freshman last season. The Spaniard will get a warm-up in Fayetteville, where she is seeded 26th in the 100m hurdles with a time of 13.31.Julia David-Smith, 5000mA senior from Issaquah who competes internationally for France, David-Smith was 19th in the 5000m a season ago but is seeded 21st in the West with a time of 15:38.36. Her heat in Fayetteville includes freshman phenom Jane Hedengren of BYU, whose seed time is nearly 13 seconds faster than any other woman in the region.Abby DeVeau, 10000mA junior from Massachusetts, DeVeau did not compete until the 2025 cross country season while playing on the Huskies' club rugby team and running with the school's Husky Running Club. In her first season outdoors, DeVeau has broken through, however, and will head to Fayetteville as the 28th seed with a time of 33:18.23 in the 10000m.Chloe Foerster, 1500mOne of the best athletes Washington is sending to Arkansas, Foerster is the No. 6 seed in the mile with a seed time of 4:08.64. No. 3 seed Carmen Alder of BYU is in Foerster's heat, as are three athletes from Oregon (but not No. 2 seed Silan Ayyildiz, who is in Cochran's heat).Amanda & Hana Moll, pole vaultThe Moll twins are, unsurprisingly, seeded first and second, although Amanda is tied with South Dakota sophomore Anna Willis with seed clearances of 4.63m. Hana has had a stellar season as a junior, resetting the twins' NCAA record multiple times and entering the week with a clearance two-tenths of a meter higher than any other woman. Both twins may only need to jump a few times before the field is whittled to the 12 who will head to Eugene.Saydi Orange, javelinOrange will likely need a slight improvement over her 52.93m season best to advance to Eugene, as she's seeded 16th in a field that will only advance 12. The throws are one of the events where truly anything can happen; however, so don't count the senior from Renton out.Ashley Schroeder, javelinSchroeder is Washington's top qualifier in the javelin after winning the Big Ten title two weekends ago and will be seeded 11th with her best throw of 54.72m. Two Nebraska athletes - senior Jana Lowka and freshman Taysha Stubbs - have higher seed throws than Schroeder, so she enters as the third-ranked Big Ten athlete despite holding the crown.Maeve Stiles, 10000mStiles was seeded 38th at last year’s NCAA West Prelims, but finished 21st in 35:00.21 in her first track season at UW after transferring in from Pennsylvania. Seeded 25th this year with a time of 33:07.79, it’s unlikely that she’ll outperform her seed by 17 places again, but she has an outside shot of making the team heading to Eugene.Jenica Swartz, 800mA bronze medalist at the Canadian national championships in the 800m last year, Swartz is seeded 19th at 2:03.13 this week. She will be in the heat with the slowest leader, as No. 6 seed Juliette Whittaker of Stanford is the top seed in that first heat. Making the top 3 in that heat will likely be necessary to get into the quarterfinal, but Iowa junior Rosemary Arthur has the exact same seed time as Swartz to tie for the third-best seed coming into the heat.Chloe Symon, 800mA bronze medalist at the Canadian U20 national championships in the 800m last year, the younger Symon actually has the seed advantage over Swartz. She’s ranked 13th at 2:02.61 and hopes that being in the heat with No. 1 seed Sanu Jallow of Arkansas will pull her forward and add some time qualifying spots to her initial heat.Chloe Thomas, 5000m & 10000mWashington has a lot of Canadians who took home bronze at last year’s national championships, evidently. Thomas wore that honor in the 5000m for Canada and will enter the week as the No. 14 seed in the West, only 2.09 seconds off the 12th-place cut line. She’ll have to do it alone, however, as Cochran and David-Smith are both in the other heat. Thomas has a better shot in the 10000m, where she is seeded 9th with a time of 32:19.59.Leonie Troeger, javelinThe 2019 German U20 javelin champion, Troeger transferred to Washington in 2025 from Cincinnati, where she redshirted in 2024 after an American Athletic Conference title in 2023. She brings up the rear of Washington’s trio in the event, seeded 24th with a best throw of 50.63m.Veronica Vacca, pole vaultA highly decorated high school vaulter, true freshman Vacca has been relegated to the background while the Moll twins lay waste to the NCAA record book. But the Pennsylvania native has been very good in her own right with a best jump of 4.43m, which is tied for 12th - the cut mark for the event. She may need to win a jump-off to join the twins in Eugene.Ava Washburn, long jumpA junior from Wisconsin who is a multi-event athlete by trade, Washburn is seeded 28th in the long jump with a leap of 6.30m after not qualifying for the heptathlon final in Eugene. On paper, she’d need to find 0.16m over her best to get in the top 12 and advance to the NCAA Championships.Josephine Welin, 3000m steeplechaseWelin did not race in the 2025 outdoor season until May, but she’s found her stride this year as a steeplechaser. The junior from Illinois will enter the week as the 32nd seed of 48 qualifiers in the event with a time of 10:16.98. Her heat includes the No. 2 and No. 5 seed, so a fast race could pull her into contention for a spot in Eugene.Avril Wilson, pole vaultWilson makes it five women in the pole vault prelims from Washington, as the junior from Duvall smashed her personal bests to qualify for her first NCAA Prelims. She was 7th at the Big Ten Championships and enters Fayetteville as the 42nd-ranked athlete with a best clearance of 4.13m.This article originally appeared on Huskies Wire: Washington Huskies track & field sending 20 women to NCAA West Prelims0 Comments 0 Shares 39 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMLakers reportedly worked out Duke Brennan on TuesdayThe Los Angeles Lakers have multiple roster holes to fill this offseason, but they will have a number of resources they can use to fill those holes. In addition to tens of millions of dollars of projected salary cap space, as well as two future first-round draft picks they can use in a potential trade, they will have the No. 25 pick in next month's NBA draft. While they could also offer that pick to another team in exchange for a player who is ready to help right now, many fans would argue that the Lakers would be better off keeping that pick and selecting the right player. They reportedly had a workout scheduled with Duke Brennan, a big man from Villanova University, on Tuesday.Add the Los Angeles Lakers to the list of NBA pre-draft workouts for Villanova big man Duke Brennan.Per @OG6_SM, Brennan is scheduled to go through an official workout with LAL on Tuesday. https://t.co/UKA4tvRuRX— Vince Wolfram (@vincewolfram15) May 25, 2026Brennan is 6-foot-10 and weighs roughly 235 to 250 pounds, and this past season, he averaged 12.4 points on 65.8% shooting, 10.3 rebounds, 0.8 steals and 0.5 blocks a game. According to Alan Lu of NBA Scouting Live, Brennan is a high-energy player who is strong and mobile.“He is a high-motor player that excels at finishing plays around the basket, and is a good rebounder and interior defender,” Lu wrote. “He will need to expand upon his skill set offensively, but he makes winning team plays on both ends of the floor, and he could end up making it to the NBA someday.”The 23-year-old played a total of four years of college basketball, and he could go in the second round of the draft or become an undrafted free agent. He may be a bit of a project player, but the Lakers have shown more of an emphasis on developing young players over the last year or two, and they have had some success with finding diamonds in the rough, including Alex Caruso, Austin Reaves and Jordan Goodwin. This article originally appeared on LeBron Wire: Lakers reportedly worked out Duke Brennan on Tuesday0 Comments 0 Shares 39 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMFanDuel TV to launch World Cup show with three former USMNT coachesCredit: Trevor Ruszkowski-USA TODAY SportsThree former U.S. Men’s National Team coaches are teaming up for a World Cup show on FanDuel TV.Gregg Berhalter, Bruce Arena, and Bob Bradley will star in a special World Cup show for FanDuel called Coaches Corner, which will be hosted by Fox Sports’ lead World Cup anchor Rob Stone, according to a report by Ryan Glasspiegel in Front Office Sports. The 10-episode series will debut on June 1, one day after the USMNT plays its first of two warmup matches ahead of the World Cup. The USMNT kick off their World Cup campaign against Paraguay on June 12.The three coaches combine for 21 years of experience coaching the USMNT. Arena’s first stint with the squad ran eight years, from 1998 to 2006, which included the team’s best-ever World Cup finish in 2002, whe the USMNT made it to the quarterfinals in Japan and South Korea. He rejoined for two more years in 2016-2017 to spearhead a disappointing 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign that saw the USMNT fail to qualify for the 32-team field. Bradley took over for Arena in 2006 following a disappointing showing in that year’s World Cup, leading the national team through the 2010 World Cup cycle before being relieved of his duties in 2011. Berhalter, of course, will be the most intimately familiar with this year’s roster, having coached the USMNT from 2018 to 2024, being let go following a Copa America where the United States failed to get out of its group. Additionally, Berhalter’s son, Sebastian, is on the 26-man roster. All this to say, Coaches Corner should provide fans a unique perspective as they follow the journey of this year’s USMNT.“Major sporting events on the calendar, like the World Cup, present an opportunity for FanDuel to bring fans unique perspectives through original programming,” FanDuel TV executive producer Michael Shiffman told Front Office Sports. “Coaches Corner is the first example of what we expect to become a recurring model around major moments throughout the year.”Episodes will air across FanDuel’s digital channels, including YouTube, Tubi, its FAST channel, and select regional sports networks across the country. The post FanDuel TV to launch World Cup show with three former USMNT coaches appeared first on Awful Announcing.0 Comments 0 Shares 39 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMDetroit Lions Could Strengthen Pass Rush and Hurt NFC North Rivals With One Bold TradeThe Detroit Lions have built one of the NFL’s deepest rosters over the past several seasons, but there is still one lingering question entering 2026.Who consistently steps up opposite Aidan Hutchinson? That question has followed Detroit throughout the offseason, and one NFL analyst believes the answer could come through a major trade involving Josh Sweat.According to Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox, the Lions should aggressively explore a deal for the veteran pass rusher because he could provide the steady edge presence Detroit has lacked alongside Hutchinson. And there may be another important reason for Detroit to act quickly.NFC North rivals are reportedly connected to Sweat as well.Detroit Still Needs More Pass Rush ProductionThe Lions addressed the edge position this offseason, but there are still legitimate questions surrounding the group behind Hutchinson.Last season, Detroit relied heavily on players like Al-Quadin Muhammad and Marcus Davenport opposite Hutchinson. Muhammad has since joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, while Davenport remains unsigned after an injury plagued and largely forgettable stint in Detroit. The Lions responded by adding D.J. Wonnum, Payton Turner, and rookie Derrick Moore. The problem is certainty.Wonnum has flashed at times during his career but has struggled with consistency and injuries. Turner still has intriguing physical tools, but his NFL production has fallen well below expectations after entering the league as a first round pick. That uncertainty is exactly why Sweat’s name keeps surfacing.Josh Sweat Would Immediately Upgrade Detroit’s DefenseThe production difference is difficult to ignore.According to the report, Wonnum and Turner combined for just nine sacks over the past two seasons. Sweat, meanwhile, recorded 20 sacks during that same stretch. That is the type of proven pass rush consistency Detroit has been searching for opposite Hutchinson.Sweat would immediately give defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard another reliable edge threat capable of collapsing pockets and forcing offenses away from constantly double teaming Hutchinson. That matters tremendously for a defense trying to take the next step in 2026.If Detroit can consistently pressure quarterbacks with four rushers, the entire defense changes.Derrick Moore Could Complicate the EquationOne major factor working against a potential Sweat trade is Moore. The rookie second round pick from Michigan Wolverines football enters the league with intriguing upside and the type of athletic traits that could allow him to contribute earlier than expected.Detroit likely wants to see what Moore can become before sacrificing developmental reps for a veteran acquisition. At the same time, the Lions are fully in win now mode.If Moore struggles to develop quickly enough during training camp, or if Detroit believes the roster is one proven pass rusher away from seriously elevating the defense, the front office could become much more aggressive. That is where Sweat becomes fascinating.Blocking the Packers and Bears Adds Another LayerThere is also an important divisional angle to this conversation.According to Knox, both the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears have also been linked to Sweat. That makes plenty of sense.Chicago still needs edge help after failing to adequately address the position during the draft, while Green Bay has direct familiarity with Sweat through defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon, who previously coached him with the Philadelphia Eagles before joining the Arizona Cardinals. For Detroit, landing Sweat would not only improve the roster directly. It would also prevent a division rival from getting him. That alone could become part of the calculation if trade discussions ever become serious.0 Comments 0 Shares 39 Views 0 Reviews
