Milton Williams Sends A.J. Brown Message Amid Trade Rumors
Milton Williams Sends A.J. Brown Message Amid Trade Rumors originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The New England Patriots have been linked to A.J. Brown in trade rumors for most of the offseason, and Milton Williams commented on his former teammate.Although nothing is official yet, many experts expect Brown to be a member of the Patriots before the season begins. Williams was asked about Brown and spoke highly of him."Definitely," Williams said when asked if he has to resist asking the Patriots to trade for Brown amid rumors. "You see the noise. Shoot, helluva player. He can definitely help our team. But they don’t pay me to do that.”Williams went on to describe what type of teammate Brown was as well.“Great dude," Williams said. "Monster on the field. Great in the locker room. Holding guys accountable. Holding himself accountable. Feel like everything you want in a player of his caliber.”Even though there is no guarantee Brown will be traded, signs point to him playing elsewhere next season, and the Patriots seem to be the favorites to land him. Not only did the Eagles trade for Dontayvion Wicks in the offseason, but they also traded up to select Makai Lemon in the first round of this year's draft. They seem to be preparing for life without Brown. Mike Vrabel coached Brown with the Tennessee Titans and the two have a strong relationship. Brown also grew up a Patriots fan and has hinted at a desire to play for the team in the past. He would be a great addition to the offense, but for now, fans can only wait and see if a trade happens.More NFL: Analyst Reveals Favorite Offseason Move By Patriots

SEC rids college football schedule of late-season 'cupcake' games
Southeastern Conference officials voted to eliminate late-season non-conference matchups, commonly referred to as "cupcake" games, starting in 2027. SEC schools will now exclusively play conference games during the season's penultimate week, replacing the practice many programs have adopted of scheduling lower-level opponents before rivalry week — something the Gators have not done in almost a decade. The shift comes as the SEC moves towards a nine-game conference slate beginning this year. Commissioner Greg Sankey stated the ruling was tied more to scheduling structure than critical practices. Hosting inferior teams at the start and near the end of the year has become tradition for many Power Four institutions. Sankey made light of the development, stating, "That's the end of cupcake weekend, we never got that one sponsored, though."Florida and rival SEC programs will now see tougher late-season competition with fewer chances to rest. In the past, these de facto recovery weeks helped teams seeking a reprieve from the demands of the conference fixture as they slanted focus towards College Football Playoff positioning.Follow us @GatorsWire on X, formerly known as Twitter, as well as Bluesky, and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Florida Gators news, notes and opinions. This article originally appeared on Gators Wire: SEC football schedules to no longer include 'cupcake' games

Anton Bonke exits NBA Draft as MSU basketball waits on Jeremy Fears Jr.
Tom Izzo got a little bit of good news about next year’s Michigan State basketball roster and the NBA Draft.Even though "Jeremy Fears Jr. Watch" continued into the 11th hour.Incoming transfer Anton Bonke has withdrawn his name from the draft process on the final day for underclassmen to return to college for the 2026-27 season, according to DraftExpress's Jon Chepkevich on Wednesday, May 27. The 7-foot-2, 270-pound center will arrive from Charlotte after previous stops at Providence and a junior college. Bonke averaged 10.6 points, 8.3 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game for Charlotte last season. But the big question for MSU as the 11:59 p.m. ET deadline loomed was the impending decision of Fears, a redshirt sophomore point guard who earned All-America and All-Big Ten honors in 2025-26.Fears measured in at 6-foot and 196.2 pounds with a 6-4 wingspan and showed he needs to work on both his shooting and defense earlier this month at the NBA Combine in Chicago. However, the 21-year-old dazzled during the scrimmage portion of the combine with his court vision and leadership. Fears averaged 13 points, eight assists, three rebounds and two steals while shooting 50% but also had a number of turnovers, though that is not a surprise or a red flag in the loosely organized impromptu team structure of those scrimmages.Izzo hinted on Wednesday at the Mackinac Policy Conference on Mackinac Island that he expected Fears’ return.“We got most of our guards back,” Izzo said. “I think we’ll have all of them back.”The Spartans did lose Divine Ugochukwu to the portal. The combo guard, who arrived last offseason from Miami (Florida), is transferring to LSU.When Izzo might get to start working with his full roster also will be delayed, albeit for a good reason. Incoming freshmen Jasiah Jervis (guard) and Ethan Taylor (center) were selected to the USA Basketball Men’s U18 National Team on Wednesday, and they will compete in the 2026 FIBA U18 Men’s AmeriCup. That will be held June 1-7 in Leon, Mexico, and the two future Spartans will remain in Colorado Springs, Colorado, for training camp until departing for the tournament.MSU’s first summer session of classes began May 11, and the second session begins June 30.Contact Chris Solari: csolari@freepress.com. College sports bill could have dramatic impact on Florida athletics
The landscape of college football is swiftly changing and could soon face the most sweeping revision yet. A new bipartisan congressional proposal would introduce significant reform to collegiate athletics, including a hard salary cap and limits on movement in the transfer portal. The proposal would also restrict players to "one penalty-free transfer" before graduation, while antitrust NCAA protections and a national NIL standard are also reportedly on the way.Florida and other SEC programs could be profoundly impacted by this reframe. Jon Sumrall and the Gators aggressively used both NIL and the transfer portal to build the current roster, which includes over 50 new additions. Power Four coaches have expressed concerns about roster turnover creating an unsustainably chaotic environment within the sport.Across the country, administrators and analysts have also echoed grievances regarding unchecked spending. Many believe the long-term stability of the association is threatened by the lack of federal regulation, while others argue it restricts player freedom, earning potential, and mobility in a system that has come under criticism for decades for being exploitative towards its athletes.Follow us @GatorsWire on X, formerly known as Twitter, as well as Bluesky, and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Florida Gators news, notes and opinions. This article originally appeared on Gators Wire: Proposed college sports bill could reshape Florida football

Mason Plumlee's cheap shot on Jared McCain in fourth quarter upgraded to flagrant foul
On a night when the referees seemed to want to inject themselves into every aspect of the game, this cheap shot by Mason Plumlee was somehow not deemed a flagrant foul when it happened in the fourth quarter.Mason Plumlee hits Jared McCain hard in the back, in garbage time (with replays).Isaiah Hartenstein having some words with him and then with Bismack Biyombo, who stepped up for his teammate as well. https://t.co/yhwFqm28aNpic.twitter.com/SmxZYwUwSp— MrBuckBuck (@MrBuckBuckNBA) May 27, 2026Fortunately, the NBA league office saw it differently and upgraded the foul to a flagrant on Thursday.Mason Plumlee’s (SAS) foul against Jared McCain (OKC) at 1:39 of the 4th quarter in Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals on 5/26/26 has been upgraded to a Flagrant 1 after league review.https://t.co/hGgdPt82M2— NBA Official (@NBAOfficial) May 27, 2026The league defines a Flagrant foul 1 as "unnecessary contact committed by a player against an opponent." This unquestionably was that. A Fragrant foul 2 is "unnecessary and excessive" contact, and this was in the running for that, too.McCain scored 18 points of his 20 points in the second half on Tuesday night as the Thunder pulled away and picked up a comfortable Game 5 win to go up 3-2 and put themselves one win away from a return trip to the NBA Finals. It wasn't just Plumlee, Bismack Biyombo also had a hard late-game foul on McCain, apparently trying to establish the Spurs' toughness. If that was the plan, they should have done it in the first three quarters when the game was in doubt, rather than looking frustrated in the final minutes.

Tuscola track brings home impressive results from state meet
May 27—The Tuscola girls' track and field team came away from the state meet with a seventh-place finish despite having a small team. The meet was bookended by a pair of strong performances in the relay races. In the 4x800-meter race, Tuscola grabbed third. In the 4x400-meter, the Mountaineers finished second behind cross-county rivals Pisgah. The team racked up strong state finishes in several individual contests, as well."The thing I'm most proud of with this team is the fact that every single kid we took to regionals qualified for state. I don't know that too many teams can say that. That's building a program, and then pretty much everybody lived up to expectations at state, too," Tuscola Coach Mark Altimari said. Both relay teams consisted of juniors Julia Wells and Katie Smith and seniors Elise Riera-Gomez and Olivia Arnold.Arnold also grabbed a second-place finish in the 800-meter race."I thought it was phenomenal. I thought she had a great season. If I had told her a year ago, in a year, you're going to be state runner-up, we would have been thrilled with that. Being the competitor she is, she obviously wanted to win, but sometimes you're just the second-best runner in a race," Altimari said.Senior Georgia Crowder finished second in the discus. Altimari said Crowder had an up-and-down season with a handful of fouls throughout the year when she was trying too hard for the big throw."I don't think anybody expected her to get second. That was just phenomenal. I'm so pleased that she capped off her four years like that," Altimari said.Riera-Gomez finished 10th in the 400-meter, Wells finished fourth in the 1600-meter and senior Cora Hogan finished 10th in the triple jump.On the boys' side, senior Easton Edwards finished ninth in the 300-meter hurdles. The graduating seniors group played a big part in progressing the Tuscola program over the last few seasons."That's the foundation group. I think we took a big step in laying down a foundation of what expectations there are going forward because now it's just a matter of getting the next crew to buy into what they did," Altimari said. "It's about building a program, not a team. To me, it shows that the buy-in does have a payoff."

NASCAR removes Kyle Busch from point standings for 2026 season
Kyle Busch will no longer appear in NASCAR’s Cup Series point standings for the 2026 season.Busch — who died last Thursday due to what his family called complications from severe pneumonia that progressed into sepsis — was 24th in points following his final official Cup Series race at Watkins Glen on May 10. Busch placed 17th in the Richard Childress Racing No. 8 Chevrolet a week later at Dover, but All-Star races don’t count toward season points totals.Following Busch’s shocking death, his car was renumbered to No. 33 and Austin Hill raced in his place at Charlotte Motor Speedway in the Coca-Cola 600, placing 27th. Hill will also fill the seat of the No. 33 this Sunday at Nashville.According to Bob Pockrass of Fox Sports, NASCAR made the decision to remove Busch from the point standings after talking with RCR about how to be “empathetic of the impact to those who would see his name in the standings.”NASCAR has removed Kyle Busch from its point standings, a decision made following conversations with RCR about how to handle Busch's death and being empathetic of the impact to those who would see his name in the standings.— Bob Pockrass (@bobpockrass) May 27, 2026Busch is NASCAR’s all-time winningest driver across its top three national touring series with 234 combined victories. He has 63 wins in the top-level Cup Series, which ranks ninth all-time. He also has 102 wins in the second-tier O’Reilly Auto Parts Series, the most ever by any driver, and 69 wins in the Craftsman Truck Series — which is also the most by any driver. Busch won his final truck race at Dover on May 15, piloting the Spire Motorsports No. 7 Chevrolet. This weekend at Nashville, Rajah Caruth will drive that truck in Busch’s place. While driving for Joe Gibbs Racing from 2008 through 2022, Busch captured a pair of Cup Series championships in 2015 and 2019 driving the No. 18 Toyota — often with an M&M’s sponsorship plastered across his hood.Busch is the only driver to win at least one Cup Series race in 19 consecutive seasons, doing so from 2005 through 2023. In another example of the pure, raw racing talent that Busch possessed, he is the only driver ever to win each of the three races — the trucks, the O’Reilly Series and the Cup Series — in the same weekend. He did it twice, in 2010 and 2017, at Bristol. This article originally appeared on USA TODAY: Kyle Busch removed from 2026 NASCAR Cup standings following death

Johnsburg/Minerva, Bolton advance to D finals

Girls to end season in Graz
Girls to end season in GrazFirst championship group win wanted This memorable debut season for our girls, marked by an appearance in the Austrian Women's Cup final and championship group qualification, comes to an end on Friday evening. We'll conclude the season in Graz with the ADMIRAL Women's Bundesliga match against SK Sturm Graz. Referee Lena Hirtl will kick off the game at 18:30 CEST.Our young team has already achieved a great deal this season, but Dusan Pavlovic's players have yet to secure their first championship group victory. After two impressive draws against league leaders FK Austria Vienna, we are now aiming for three points in Graz. Making a prediction seems difficult, considering we've seen a ten-goal humdinger – the 5-5 draw in February's away game – and some one-goal chess matches (both home games ended 0-1). If you include the matches that captain Lucia Orkic and her teammates played under the FC Bergheim banner, the record becomes a veritable drought: they failed to win any of their 18 meetings, losing 16.While the final standings are already set – Sturm have lost their last four games but secured third place, while our team is guaranteed fourth – we certainly have a score to settle. You can follow whether the sorry run against Sturm ends, and our team finishes this extraordinary season with a bang on ÖFB TV.ViewsFor us, it's about finishing the season with a strong performance. As a team, we've developed exceptionally throughout the year, and that's exactly what we want to demonstrate in Graz. We're focusing on ourselves and want to do our best once again.Dusan Pavlovic

In a Women's College World Series without Oklahoma, the Sooners' base is up for grabs: 'I’ll take those 10,000 fans'
OKLAHOMA CITY — Once powerhouse Oklahoma fell out of the race for Women’s College World Series national champion, a new chase emerged for their massive local fanbase, suddenly and shockingly without a rooting interest. Alabama head coach Patrick Murphy wasn’t about to let the opportunity for that backing pass his program by in its first WCWS appearance since 2001. “First, to all the Oklahoma fans that are looking for a team to cheer for, it’s right here,” Murphy said in an appeal he intended to spread beyond the media press conference room at Devon Park on Wednesday. “We have the same color palette. ‘AMA’ at the bottom. You can almost think it says Oklahoma; pretend it does. I’ll take those 10,000 fans cheering for us.” The 2026 WCWS is the first in more than a decade to be played without Oklahoma after they were upset by Mississippi State in the super regional last weekend. They are the only program to win four consecutive titles, doing so from 2021 to 2024, and reached the WCWS in nine consecutive seasons. Eight teams. One dream. 🥎🔗 https://t.co/mWzbvHmFQC📲 https://t.co/2QO2igeQwl🎟️ https://t.co/QxhUYg5UXP#WCWSpic.twitter.com/MSlFWLYzRU— NCAA Softball (@NCAASoftball) May 24, 2026The week-plus tournament at Devon Park is typically a Sooners coronation, 30 minutes up the road from campus. There is a concern that their absence will sink attendance numbers and viewer interest, despite a field that most coaches, including Murphy, praised for parity on Wednesday. There is an overwhelming sense inside and outside of the park that no one is in pole position for the title. Anyone could win, and that should bring its own type of fandom. “For the sport and for just the fans involved, it gives them another opportunity to get to know another team such as State,” Murphy, who has coached at Alabama since the program’s inception in 1997, said. “One of the coolest things about this year is there was two schools in the SEC that had not made the World Series, and they both made it this year. I hope you guys realize there's 15 schools in the SEC, and now every single one of us has made a World Series. Unbelievable.” Alabama, Mississippi State, Arkansas, Texas and Tennessee will all represent the SEC when play begins with a quadruple header on Thursday. Texas is the reigning champion, while Mississippi State and Arkansas are making their first appearances. Alabama won its sole title in 2012 and finished runner-up in 2014. Tennessee has two runner-up finishes, including in 2013 to Oklahoma. Nebraska hasn’t reached the championship series since 1985, and Texas Tech reached its first a season ago. Texas Tech head coach Gerry Glasco, who led the Red Raiders to a championship series Game 3 appearance last season in his first year at the school, thinks the Sooners faithful will shift their support to Mississippi State despite the recent heartbreak. It’s where one of their own resides. Bulldogs head coach Samantha Ricketts played for Oklahoma from 2005-09 and was an assistant coach from 2009-11. She said she’s heard from many of her Norman connections throughout the week, reaching out to congratulate her. “Yes, we're more than willing to adopt some new fans for the weekend,” Ricketts said. “I've got all kinds of shirts. We'll trade in crimson for maroon if that's what they want to do.” The sport’s other heavyweight isn’t making any such pleas, whether serious or in light, fun jest. UCLA’s Kelly Inouye-Perez, the winningest head coach in Division I softball leading the winningest program, has been here plenty as a head coach and a player. The tournament goes on, no matter which teams are in the field. Hers is a 12-time national champion, having won at least one in every decade, including an AIAW title before the NCAA began governing women’s sports in 1982. They have yet to win one in the 2020s. “It celebrates the opportunity for those that have earned the opportunity to compete, and I think you're going to see exactly that: great softball [and] a great fan base for the sport,” Inouye-Perez said. “We happen to be here in the city of Oklahoma, but there's a lot of people that come and support softball. So I'm excited for that.”

'Kind of stole one:' Takeaways from Brewers thriller over St. Louis
The Milwaukee Brewers didn't have a traditional starting pitcher May 27, didn't even have a hit for the first seven innings and still found a way to pull something off that they haven't done at American Family Field since 2011: a sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals. The find-a-way Brewers (33-20), a team that has hit fewer home runs than any other squad in Major League Baseball, manufactured just three hits all day, but all of them came in the eighth inning of the 2-1 victory against the team's top competition in the National League Central. It was the first win of the year with three or fewer hits and the first sweep of the Cardinals (three or more games) since June 10-12, 2011.The Brewers moved to 4 ½ games ahead of the Cardinals for first place in the division, with the Reds now tied in second place. And they did it on a day when Cardinals starter Dustin May opened with seven no-hit innings."You feel like you kind of stole one a little bit," said Brewers designated hitter Christian Yelich, whose two-out RBI single in the eighth against reliever JoJo Romero tied the game at 1-1 and set the stage for the Brewers to score a go-ahead run on a Cardinals error. "Credit to our pitchers for keeping us in the game, you were only chasing one run. It can change quick, and we were fortunate to get some traffic there in the eighth inning and we did just enough."Some takeaways from the win at American Family Field:The offense provided the heroics, but the pitching plan provided the victory's spineAfter Logan Henderson landed on the injured list with a back injury and the Brewers handed a Friday assignment to newly recalled Coleman Crow, the Brewers turned to a bullpen game. But with the unique assets of Chad Patrick, Shane Drohan and Aaron Ashby, all of whom have been effective in leverage long-relief roles, Milwaukee only needed four pitchers, including a notable ninth-inning save from Trevor Megill."It's a little unconventional but we we've been able to get away with it," Brewers manager Pat Murphy said.Patrick, who held a 2-1 lead against the Twins over four innings for a May 16 save, already has five relief outings this year of more than three outs, and four of three innings of more. Since he started May 27, this outing only spiritually belongs in that category, but he allowed only one earned run on five hits in his four frames."I treated it as if I was coming out of the bullpen," said Patrick, who found out around 9:30 a.m. that he'd be taking the ball first for the 12:40 p.m. start. "I think it takes the pressure away. As the starting pitcher sometimes, you create that pressure, trying to be so perfect and things like that, so I just wanted to take that away from the day and be myself."Aaron Ashby 9-0 as wild win-collecting continuesIn came the lefty Drohan, who allowed one hit in two innings. Next came Ashby, who likewise allowed one hit (and one walk) in two innings. He stuck around long enough to inherit a Major League-leading ninth victory this season, a confounding stat for someone whose only start this year came in an "opener" capacity."Jim [Henderson, assistant pitching coach] and I made eye contact [after the Brewers took the lead]," Ashby said of the bizarre 9-0 record. "It's just one of those things where I looked at him and he looked at me, and I was like, 'I don't know what to tell you.' I don't know what's going on. It's hard in that inning when you have no hits and you're getting up there and you've, in a way, been defeated all day. We put good at-bats together."But G-Mitch [Garrett Mitchell], double the other way, it's a really solid hit to have right there. You don't want the cheap one, right? It kind of feels like the guys can get behind that. And then [Luis] Renigfo's bunt there just kind of opened the door for us gave to take a breath, I guess, and just put more good ABs together. When we put the ball in play like that, we're usually going to have success."Dustin May was nearly untouchable, until he wasn'tThe pendulum swung in the Brewers' favor when Mitchell clubbed that double leading off the eighth for the first hit of the game against May, a ball that narrowly eluded outfielder Bryan Torres. Rengifo followed with a bunt that found a no-man's land up the third-base line between pursuing Cardinals defenders. Then, the pendulum swung back to St. Louis against reliever JoJo Romero when Sal Frelick hit into a forceout that couldn't score Mitchell from third, and pinch-hitter Andrew Vaughn struck out.But Yelich singled up the middle, and Cardinals shortstop Masyn Winn booted a sharp Jackson Chourio bouncer near the same spot of the diamond, allowing Rengifo to score the go-ahead run. Winn, who made a slick fielding play to end the fifth and keep the no-hitter intact, also reached third base in the ninth with two outs but was stranded by Megill, who recorded just his second save since April 17 when he struck out Yohel Pozo to end the game."Rengifo getting that ball down where it needed to be, on the third base side, that's winning baseball," Murphy said. "Sal doesn't get it done and Vaughny surprisingly doesn't get it done, but they pick each other up with two outs."May tortured the Brewers hitters for most of the day. Though he came into the game allowing 10 hits per nine innings of work, he threw just 82 pitches to negotiate seven hitless innings, retiring 12 straight before the eighth and recording a season-high nine strikeouts. His only baserunners were Jake Bauers, struck by a pitch in the second, and Frelick, who reached on catcher's interference in the third."That cutter was special, going on the same plane," Murphy said. "That's the domination right there, he was tremendous for that amount of time, into the eighth. Isn't that how our game goes? Mitchell puts things together, and it's fun to see him after the years he's had, injured and everything else, fun to see him coming into his own and gaining some confidence. Yelich … there's no situation too big. He does so much for us, both in the clubhouse and on the field. It's not surprising."Megill gets the call in the ninth, and he probably will againOne day after Abner Uribe's wild celebration directed at the Cardinals drew rebuke from Murphy, the Brewers turned to Megill in the ninth inning. Though Winn singled and stole second with one out, Megill was able to record a long fly out and a strikeout to preserve the victory."It's not a one day thing," Murphy said of using Megill in the save situation. "We're just trying to work out the back end right now. Those guys have pitched a lot the last couple years, and haven't been totally on it [this year]. They haven't thrown the ball the way they're capable of, and their focus maybe hasn't been as on when it needs to be on. Not trying to criticize, it's just sometimes to maintain that level of excellence they've had, sometimes it takes a lot."Megill, an all-star closer last year, has a 1.29 ERA in 14 innings since his last blown save April 14.The Brewers allowed just two Cardinals runs throughout the series. Wednesday's came from Torres, who played with the independent Milwaukee Milkmen squad in 2022 and 2023, winning two league batting titles. Originally signed by the Brewers and a longtime member of the organization starting in 2015, Torres was promoted to the big leagues for the first time earlier this month after 11 years in pro baseball. This article originally appeared on Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: Takeaways from Milwaukee Brewers' 2-1 win over St. Louis Cardinals

Sánchez sets Phillies franchise record by extending scoreless streak to 44 2/3 innings in 3-0 win
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Left-hander Cristopher Sánchez pitched seven brilliant innings, extending his scoreless streak to 44 2/3 innings and passing Hall of Famer Grover Cleveland Alexander for the Phillies franchise record, in a 3-0 win Wednesday against the San Diego Padres for a three-game sweep.Sánchez (6-2) reached the milestone by getting through the four full innings he needed to pass Alexander, who had a 41-innng scoreless streak in 1911. He kept going through three more scoreless innings before leaving after throwing 100 pitches. He allowed six hits, struck out nine and walked none. He pumped his fists as he walked off the mound after striking out pinch-hitter Ty France to end the seventh. He set another franchise record by going at least seven scoreless innings for the fifth straight start, becoming the sixth to so in MLB history. Trea Turner homered leading off the ninth, his seventh, and Kyle Schwarber hit an RBI single during the two-run sixth. Sabrina Ionescu ruled out with a back injury Wednesday vs. Mercury
The New York Liberty will take on the Phoenix Mercury on Wednesday night, but will do so without point guard Sabrina Ionescu. New York had a back-to-back on Monday, and Ionescu was expected to miss that game due to rest. The Wednesday absence wasn’t expected, and the team said she is out due to a back injury. The guard battled a foot injury during the preseason, and it caused her not to make her regular-season debut until last Sunday. Play 2026 Soccer Pick 'Em with FOX One and make your picks for the world's biggest soccer tournamentShe was listed as questionable for Wednesday’s game, and it was notable that the back injury was different from the foot issue that had bothered her during the preseason. Ionescu is hopefully just day-to-day and will be able to use the extra rest on Wednesday to heal up for Friday night’s game, also against the Mercury. The Liberty will need someone else on the roster to step up and help them break their losing streak. After beginning the regular season 2-0, New York has lost four of its last five games, including three in a row. Ionescu being able to play last Sunday against the Dallas Wings wasn’t enough of a boost to help the Liberty come away with a win. Dallas beat New York 91-76.The point guard finished the game with 11 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists. Despite it being her first game of the season, she played 31 minutes, the second-most on the team. Ionescu struggled shooting in her season debut. She finished 4 of 15 from the field, including 2 of 5 from three-point range.

Sweeping praise on social media after Brewers' comeback win over Cardinals
A spring cleaning theme has developed this month with the Milwaukee Brewers. For the third time in May, the Brewers have brought out the brooms and swept a series. After taking three games against the New York Yankees and Chicago Cubs earlier, the Brewers accomplished the feat in a most improbable way Wednesday, May 27 against the NL Central rival St. Louis Cardinals.No-hit for seven innings by Cardinals starter Dustin May, the Brewers got all three of their hits in the eighth inning and scored the go-ahead run on an error by gold-glove shortstop Masyn Winn, completing a 2-1 comeback triumph. The Brewers have dropped only one series this month. The three victories over the Cardinals also give the Brewers a very impressive 15-5 record over teams over .500 in May (3-0 vs. Yankees, Cubs; 4-1 vs Cardinals; 2-1 vs. Nationals, Padres; 1-2 vs. Dodgers), After a day off May 28, the Brewers finish the month with a three-game series at Houston (24-32).In those 15 victories, Brewers pitchers have allowed only 23 runs (1.53 runs a game). In 11 of those 15 wins, the pitching staff allowed a miniscule two runs or fewer. Here's a bit of social media reaction to the Brewers' latest series sweep:The Brewers were being no hit through 7Pitching staff kept the game within reach And just like that the Brewers take the lead in the bottom of the 8thTHANKS MASYN WYNNLETS GOOOOOpic.twitter.com/Xtk98lgugp— Matthew S. 👀 A swap on the cards? Colo Colo's formula to sign Diego Valdés
👀 A swap on the cards? Colo Colo's formula to sign Diego ValdésWhile Colo Colo celebrates its strong form in the local tournament, Blanco y Negro’s management is already planning moves for the winter transfer window. Head coach Fernando “Tano” Ortiz’s main target is once again Diego Valdés, the Chilean midfielder who plays for Vélez Sarsfield, and they reportedly already have an attractive negotiating strategy in mind.Claudio Aquino as a bargaining chipUnlike in the summer transfer window, when the Argentine club described Colo Colo’s offer as “ridiculous,” Vélez’s stance is now much more flexible. From Liniers, they have expressed their willingness to listen to offers and would look very favorably on a swap deal involving midfielder Claudio Aquino, who has not managed to establish himself in the “Cacique” setup and would help lower the cost of the operation.Continuity and international pedigree in sightOrtiz’s interest is driven by the need to add international experience and attacking presence to Colo Colo’s midfield. Valdés, who has experience with La Roja and is under contract in Argentina until 2027, has posted strong numbers so far in 2026: he has played 15 official matches, contributing one goal and five assists. The final decision will rest with the Chilean board to see whether it approves the swap deal. This article was translated into English by Artificial Intelligence. Arizona Cardinals HC Mike LaFleur addresses Jacoby Brissett's absence again
The ongoing story for the Arizona Cardinals has been the absence of quarterback Jacoby Brissett from OTAs (organized team activities), the final phase of the offseason program. While it is voluntary to participate, Brissett is holding out while he seeks a new deal paying him like a starting quarterback. Head coach Mike LaFleur spoke to reporters after Wednesday's practice and echoed what he has said previously about Brissett's absence. It isn't that big a deal. "You'll be hard-pressed to see if Jacoby hasn't done most of what we have been doing physically," LaFleur said. "It's word association from that point and cadences and all that kind of stuff. "The hardest thing to teach a player is the speed of the NFL game in general, and he's played a lot of ball, so he'll be just fine."Brissett has not specifically played in LaFleur's offense in his career, but he is entering his 11th NFL season. He has played in 101 games and started 65. The Cardinals have one more week of OTAs and then will have mandatory minicamp for three days beginning June 8. If Brissett isn't there, that will raise more questions. Jacoby Brissett's contract situationBrissett is due to make almost $4.9 million in salary in 2026, with $1.5 million of that guaranteed. He can make up to $510,000 in roster bonuses as well. However, after starting 12 games last season, he is expected to be the Cardinals' starting quarterback. No expected starting quarterback not on a cost-controlled rookie contract is earning less than $20 million. Overall, the proposals aimed to increase money for lower-revenue teams, while also forcing those lower-revenue teams to invest financially in their big-league clubs.Below are the proposed changes from the players, according to Passan:A "competitive-integrity tax" for any team that does not spend $150 millionIncreased players' minimum salary from $780,000 to $1.5 millionIncrease in base CBT threshold from $244M to $300MChanges to the revenue-sharing system, which would distribute more money from local television revenue but decrease the amount distributed from in-stadium revenue, "to incentivize teams that win and draw larger crowds"Free agency for players who are 30 at 5+ years of service (Currently six years)Teams that received hypothetical revenue sharing would forfeit portions of their checks depending on payroll levels, while recipients that win receive more money.Pre-arbitration bonus pool increase from $50 million to $180 million$3 million minimum tender in arbitrationArbitration super 2s jump from 22% of players to 44%An official first proposal from MLB owners is expected on Thursday, according to Passan, with a proposed salary cap heavily anticipated. However, on Wednesday, MLB spokesperson Glen Caplin also provided The Athletic's Evan Drellich with a statement about the first MLBPA proposal. In the statement, Caplin said that under the proposed MLBPA system, the Dodgers would pay less than they do now in luxury tax payments, allowing them to spend even more money on players."We understand their proposals are designed to benefit players. Unfortunately, they do not address and in fact exacerbate the competitive balance problem our fans are telling us we must address," the statement read. "The MLBPA's proposal would reduce the amount transferred to lower-revenue clubs, weaken the Competitive Balance Tax, and lead to even more payroll disparity than exists today."Statement from MLB spokesperson Glen Caplin following the union's opening proposal:"We understand their proposals are designed to benefit players. That is the earliest that a potential lockout could begin.Considering the wide gap in stances between MLB owners and players over topics like a potential salary cap, there is a near-industry-wide expectation that the lockout could, at the very least, last deep into when spring training would typically be played, if not the 2027 regular season.MORE: Where Cristopher Sanchez's active scoreless streak ranks all-timeWhat is a lockout?A lockout is when professional sports leagues are shut down by owners due to the lack of an agreement with players and their union over a collective bargaining agreement (CBA).During a lockout, team facilities and activities can be stopped altogether, which can mean a lack of pay and missed games, depending on the length. MLB has had lockouts before; the most recent one was in 2021-22, which lasted from Dec. 2, 2021, until Mar. 10, 2022, with the biggest labor issues regarding compensation for young players and limits on tanking. The 2021-22 MLB lockout marked the first MLB work stoppage since the 1994–95 strike — initiated by players, rather than a lockout — which is when the entire postseason and World Series were canceled.

Colorado football losing 2026 DL commit to top Big Ten program
The Colorado Buffaloes lost a 2026 commitment on Wednesday afternoon when three-star defensive lineman Joseph Peko announced that he'd be flipping his commitment from the Buffs to Washington.Peko, a 6-foot-3, 310-pound product of Oaks Christian High School in Southern California, is ranked as the nation's No. 107 defensive lineman and No. 66 prospect in the state by 247Sports. Peko initially committed to Deion Sanders' program when his father, Domata Peko, was the defensive line coach. The Pittsburgh Steelers hired the elder Peko in February for the same role, which may have played into his son's decision to flip his pledge.Given the family ties disappearing, the move to Washington is not all that surprising. However, Peko's brother, Domata Peko Jr., is also on the Buffs, preparing to enter his first season in Boulder.Let’s Get it💯 @UW_Football@BrandonHuffman@GregBiggins@CoachJeddFischpic.twitter.com/liGWLD8coo— Joseph Peko (@JosephPeko) May 27, 2026Colorado's 2026 recruiting class now sits at 16 commits, with 14 already enrolled this past semester. Inigo Perez after Rayo Vallecano Conference League final loss: “Seeing the tears destroys you inside”
Inigo Perez after Rayo Vallecano Conference League final loss: “Seeing the tears destroys you inside”Rayo Vallecano manager Inigo Perez cut an emotional figure as he walked into his press conference following their 1-0 Conference League final loss to Crystal Palace, and walked out to a round of applause. The side from Vallecas came up short, but Perez admitted that he was left with a mix of sadness and frustration thereafter.“These are difficult times for everyone. We just have to get through it however we can,” he said, unable to find words of consolation for the defeat. That’s just how it goes when you lose. Especially when you came so close. What breaks you inside is seeing people cry. It absolutely destroys you. You feel that sadness and frustration of defeat, of the explosion of happiness that winning it would have meant, and it leaves you frustrated.”“The fans are the driving force behind this team and the reason we broke down”Despite their defeat, Rayo Vallecano fans unveiled a banner stating The greatest victory, was being with you in defeat after the final whistle, and were doing their best to pick their players up after the game.“There is pain, frustration, sadness. At how it escaped us. Obviously, it’s not a nice situation. In such a delicate moment, when you lose, it’s frustration, when you win its happiness. What destroys you is when you see people crying. It hurts you. They’re crying out of emotion. And yet they’re the ones that demand that you pick yourself up, that are supporting you.”Perez rejected the notion that the defeat was a missed opportunity to vindicate their way of doing things, and the spirit of Vallecas.“We lost a game of football. We didn’t lose an opportunity to show ourselves. It wasn’t a day to show what we’re about, it was a day to celebrate or to cry. The authentic side of ourselves is in the day-to-day stuff. You can come by the neighbourhood, and you can see for yourselves any day you want. That’s where you see what the people are and what Vallecas is made of.”“The fans are the driving force behind this team surviving, and behind this dream that we’ve been living in, and they’re the reason that we break down when we went over to them. We normally try to be balanced when we win or lose, but in this situation, it’s impossible to remain in one piece.”Regardless of the emotional difficulty, Perez had wavered little if they took from the final a pride in their fans.“Always. That will be eternal. You don’t have words. These are delicate moments to go through. At Rayo there is an acceptance of the suffering, and from there we overcome a lot of problems, even if it’s difficult. I’m proud of the players, the fans, the neighbourhood.”Inigo Perez: Palace were better, they deserved itIn terms of where the game was won and lost, the Rayo manager was gracious in defeat, and praised his side for getting back into the game after conceding.“”It was not the game that imagined, that we all had in our heads. But I prefer to think that it wasn’t down to us, but it was down to them being better. They’re deserved winners. The first half was a bit of a feeling-out process. Neither side wanted to make a mistake. But that goal, coming from an isolated play, really impacted us. We went through some very dangerous moments, but we managed to bounce back. It wasn’t brilliant, perhaps, but we shook off that feeling of not quite being ourselves.”“They were more comfortable, they got into the game better. Then they had that moment where they scored, and they had a good couple of chances. But we held out, we didn’t fall apart, albeit when did so we didn’t shine, and not in the way we usually do.”In a relatively even game outside of that ten minutes of Palace dominance, Perez was not surprised by anything Rayo had to face.“I didn’t see anything that we hadn’t already seen. Both teams were practically naked, and both teams can draw the body of the other. I don’t think our lack of experience was decisive. There were specific moments that were.”Perez not speaking about futureDespite their defeat and struggles to to damage to Palace, Perez found no flaw in their ambition.“It was already difficult to improve on this year. Ambition isn’t measured in a press conference with words, and these players have more than enough ambition. Let’s hope they can continue showing it.”One of the talking points that he avoided was his future, twice refusing to get into it, and also denying any fatigue from the season.“It’s hard to find a group of players like this one. This group is truly special. They are genuine friends who respect and love one another. They help each other out. They protect and encourage one another. If I have to lose, I’d rather lose alongside these guys.”“It wouldn’t be appropriate to talk about that [my future] right now. It wouldn’t be fair.”

How Palace made magical memories during 12 glorious months of Glasner
[BBC]When Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish first met Oliver Glasner in late 2023, he had no idea it would be a meeting that would change the course of the club's history. It was then sporting director, Dougie Freedman, who had set up the get-together in south London. Freedman had tracked Glasner's career trajectory in the Bundesliga with Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt and was impressed with what he saw.Roy Hodgson was in charge at Selhurst Park at the time but there was pressure on the club to make a change. Parish would have usually preferred to appoint a manager with some Premier League history, but there was something about Glasner that impressed the businessman.By the time Hodgson departed the following February, the wheels were already in motion towards the Austrian's appointment.Wind forward two and a half years, and Glasner has just led Crystal Palace to Conference League glory with a 1-0 win over Rayo Vallecano in Leipzig. It will be his final game in charge - but it comes at the end of a scarcely-believable 12-month period of unprecedented success."He has got to be one of the best managers Crystal Palace have ever had," said Palace midfielder Adam Wharton."He has made a massive difference for how the club looks at competitions. We are not just looking to stay in the Premier League and be in Europe, we are looking to win and be as high as possible."So how did Glasner lead Palace - without a major trophy in their history at the start of last season - to the FA Cup, Community Shield and Conference League all within the space of 375 unforgettable days?Crystal Palace win Conference League with superb victory over RayoEuropean heartbreak, transfer U-turns and threatening to quitIt was only a couple of weeks after beating Manchester City in the FA Cup final at Wembley that Palace were hit with a devastating sucker-punch. It was early July and south London was eagerly anticipating the prospect of Selhurst Park hosting Europa League football for the first time. But after Uefa deemed Palace to have breached its multi-club ownership rules - with American businessman John Textor holding stakes in both the Eagles and French side Lyon, who had also qualified for the Europa League - Glasner's team were demoted to the Conference League. The shock verdict threatened to suck the life out of Palace's success before the new season had even began, with Parish describing it as "probably one of the greatest injustices that has ever happened in European football" before an ultimately unsuccessful appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. After a 120-year wait for a first major trophy, however, it was going to take more than that to dampen Palace's spirits. The Eagles showed no signs of feeling sorry for themselves when starting the new season by defeating Premier League champions Liverpool in the Community Shield in the now-familiar surroundings of Wembley. But the turbulence continued with the departure of talisman Eberechi Eze, who left for a record fee to join Arsenal after five years at Selhurst Park. And they nearly also have had to cope with the loss of star defender and captain Marc Guehi had Glasner not intervened. The England international was all set to rubber-stamp a move to Liverpool until Palace pulled the plug late on deadline day after a move for his intended replacement - Brighton's Igor Julio - failed to materialise. After Guehi's move to fell through - which would have brought Palace a fee in excess of £35m for a player in the final 12 months of his contract - the lines between Glasner and Parish appeared to blur. It was reported that the Austrian manager, also in the final year of his deal at Selhurst Park, had threatened to quit if Parish had sanctioned Guehi's move to Merseyside.Glasner was left frustrated that Palace, preparing for their debut European campaign - which would include at least six additional games in the league phase of the competition - seemed willing to sanction departures rather than retain and strengthen the squad they already had.It was clear tensions were rising behind the scenes at Selhurst Park.'It was a tough time to support Palace'By the team the season had reached the midway point, Palace were in crisis. Only this time, the finger could not be pointed at anyone else but those at Selhurst Park.During a wretched run between December and January, Palace's season threatened to unravel, both on and off the pitch. Palace were in the midst of a 12-game winless run across all competitions, which had seen them slip out of the Premier League's top five and plummet towards the relegation zone. And their hopes of winning the Conference League were left in the balance as they entered the play-offs after failing to finish inside the top eight. But the lowest moment of a woeful month came in early January when they were involved in the biggest shock in FA Cup history when they were knocked out by non-league Maccesfield.Less than two weeks later, Glasner appeared intent on adding more drama to Palace's season by unexpectedly announcing he would leave the club at the end of the campaign. The Austrian's decision came after Palace agreed to sell Guehi to Manchester City, with Glasner later hitting out at Parish and the club's other decision-makers for "completely" abandoning his side. "The way in which his departure was announced - and his attitude in those weeks - put a slight grey cloud over my feelings towards him," says Ellie Killick from Crystal Palace fanzine Eagle Eye View."In January, it was a tough time to support Palace."At that point, it seemed improbable that Glasner would even see out the season, having effectively sparked a civil war at Selhurst Park. But Parish accepted Glasner for who he was - a manager capable of letting his emotions get the better of him at times, but also the most successful the club has ever had.BBC Sport understands that the idea of sacking the former Wolfsburg and Frankfurt manager hardly entered Parish's mind.It has proved to be a call that has changed the trajectory of Palace's history. 'It is a good chapter to read in the Crystal Palace book'When Glasner bid farewell to Selhurst Park on Sunday following the final Premier League game of the season, the Austrian made sure he had time to poke fun at his past disagreements with Parish."Now I'm leaving, I don't have to agree with the chairman," he said with a smile. "He said the best day was the FA Cup final, but I don't agree. The best day is still to come in Leipzig."It was a light-hearted exchange that underlined Palace's confidence as they prepared for a first European final - a far cry from where they found themselves at the start of the year. The Conference League final victory - which guarantees Palace a spot in next season's Europa League - is the final chapter of Glasner's career with the Eagles."Right now I can't even believe it is the last game," said Glasner after full-time on Wednesday. "It is a good chapter to read in the Crystal Palace book but other good chapters will follow. "I said to the players after the FA Cup, go and get what you deserve - the Europa League. "Now with a one year delay, the club, fans, players, sometimes you have to take a road around and now Crystal Palace is where it should be."Killick added: "Glasner has completely changed the trajectory of Crystal Palace Football Club."Before he came, we were content with finishing mid-table and having half decent cup runs but never going all the way. "Now in the past 12 months, we've won three cups and been on a European tour, something that was a distant dream 18 months ago."We've had plenty of managers over the past decade, but none has reached the heights Glasner has taken us to"The next person to manage Crystal Palace will have big shoes to fill, and I just hope the ambition doesn't depart with him."Crystal Palace supporters have never had it so good. French Open recap Day 4: How to hit the worst shot of the tournament, on match point — and win
Follow The Athletic’s French Open coverageWelcome to the French Open briefing, where The Athletic will explain the stories behind the stories on each day of the tournament. On Day 4, there was a stunning miss, a very good day for one player and yet more heat carnage. How did a player recover from a miss that defied belief? The smash, when players take the ball out of the air with an overhead shot, is one of the fundamentals of tennis. Essential for finishing points, it’s also a little misunderstood. The apparent simplicity makes it easy to be complacent; it also means that making a mistake on a smash is one of the more embarrassing mistakes in tennis, and perhaps any sport.Wednesday at the French Open, Russia’s Karen Khachanov was up match point against Marco Trungelliti of Argentina when he received the gift every player dreams of in such a big moment: A lob so feeble that they can let the ball bounce before hitting a smash. Taking the ball directly out of the air, especially when it is very sunny, can be risky. It’s all too easy to misread the flight or look at the sun and get dazzled. But Trungelliti’s lob was short enough that Khachanov, the No. 13 seed, could let it drop to a comfortable height and then dispatch it to end the match.Or, he could do this:Considering degree of difficulty, situation, and by how much he missed, Khachanov immediately entered worst-miss-of-all-time conversations. The 30-year-old still had a match to win. Trungelliti broke Khachanov’s serve to level the match for 5-5 and then dragged the Russian, who could have been forgiven for melting into a puddle, into a fourth-set tiebreak. But instead of dwelling on the miss, Khachanov got over the line, securing a 7-6(5), 5-7, 6-1, 7-6(4) win to move into the third round. An intriguing sub-plot to Khachanov’s miss was how it spread online. Tennis fans, sports fans, and people who don’t know they are tennis fans yet love mess. They love failure. They love mistakes. Official tennis accounts do not usually post these things, even though mistakes and strange moments going viral are some of the most reliable ways that a sport can reach a wider audience. This time though, the official Roland Garros account leaned into the drama, and posted the smash on X. Bless this tennis mess.— James HansenA good day for a four-time French Open champion, but a bad one for the plot? For the second year running, the tennis gods didn’t play ball.As at the 2025 French Open, tennis fans were one match away from the seventh instalment of the Iga Świątek vs. Jeļena Ostapenko head-to-head, only for the Latvian to fall at the final hurdle.Ostapenko’s 6-0 head-to-head winning record over Świątek is one of the most curious sequences in the sport. Świątek has been the higher-ranked player for all but one of those meetings, sometimes by a big margin, and yet she’s never been able to post a win against a player who is almost defined by her inconsistency.Inconsistency in every area apart from facing Świątek, where she delivers her best without fail. Seeing whether Świątek could finally end the streak at her most successful tournament was a tantalising prospect but, alas, Ostapenko fell just short — losing in three sets to Magda Linette Wednesday.Świątek kept up her end of the bargain by comfortably beating Sara Bejlek to reach the French Open third round. A year ago she joked that she would be a terrible poker player after dissolving into giggles when trying to pretend she had no preference about playing Ostapenko or not. This time around, Świątek was more circumspect, saying in her news conference that, “I don’t want to even think about it now, because I’ll see who wins, and then I’ll prepare.”Even if it doesn’t have the blockbuster capacity of facing the 2017 French Open champion Ostapenko, Świątek’s match against her fellow Pole Linette still has an interesting sub-plot.It was a defeat to Linette at the Miami Open two months ago that prompted Świątek to part ways with coach Wim Fissette, after saying post-match that she was in “the worst nightmare a tennis player can have.”Świątek’s fortunes have improved since, and Wednesday ended up being a great day for her. Not only did she win and Ostapenko lost, Elena Rybakina, the No. 2 seed who was in her draw as a potential semifinal opponent, also went out.— Charlie EccleshareHow did the Paris heat continue to impact the tournament? After Casper Ruud’s struggle in the heat and Alexander Blockx’s sprained ankle, the injury carnage and temperature-related issues continued Wednesday at the French Open.Former French Open finalist and No. 13 seed Jasmine Paolini was limping due to an apparent ankle injury and lost to Argentine Solana Sierra, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, in her second round match. Hailey Baptiste, the No. 26 seed, suffered a gruesome-looking knee injury in and had to retire in the first set against Wang Xiyu. Then there was a nightmarish — though not unbelievable, given the weather — scene on Court 6 after Jakub Menšík won a four-hour-and-41-minute match against Mariano Navone, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(11). Menšík fell to the ground directly after match point and was unable to stand up for an extended period of time due to a cramping spell.No. 26 Jakub Mensik collapsed after a 4 hour 41 minute match with Mariano Navone 😳 pic.twitter.com/76kDoPAbWh— TNT Sports U.S. (@TNTSportsUS) May 27, 2026Menšík could only roll around in the clay while he was splayed on the court. First Navone came over to check on him, then medics brought out ice and eventually, a stretcher before the 20-year-old finally rose and was later taken to the locker room in a wheelchair. He had taken a medical timeout during the deciding set.Players are eager for the broiling weather to ease, which should happen Sunday. Temperatures have reached up to 91 degrees over the past few days, far above normal for this time of year in Paris, and the heat can feel especially brutal on outer courts where Menšík was playing, where there is little shade. The French Open’s extreme weather policy is based on the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT), which accounts for humidity, sun and wind among other factors. If the WBGT reaches 86 degrees or higher, there can be 10-minute breaks inserted between the second and third sets for women’s matches and between the third and fourth sets for men’s matches. If the WBGT hits 90 degrees, which would require an air temperature of about 100 degrees, play is suspended. The heat rule has not been in effect yet this tournament.— Ava WallaceOther notable results on Day 4:Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina (7) continued her rich vein of form with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Spanish qualifier Kaitlin Quevedo. The Ukrainian has won 8 matches in a row.Novak Djokovic (3) overcame Valentin Royer and the home crowd with a 6-3, 6-2, 6-7(7), 6-3 win on Court Philippe-Chatrier.Djokovic will play João Fonseca (28), after the Brazilian came from two sets down for the first time in his career to beat Croatia’s Dino Prižmić 3-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, 6-2.Mirra Andreeva (8) of Russia rebounded from losing the first set to Spanish qualifier Marina Bassols Ribera and turned in a 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 victory.Shot of the dayNovak Djokovic running on to a forehand at full speed just about always spells doom for his opponents:Drop Shots🌝 The WTA Tour met with French Open organizers to discuss the lack of women’s matches in night sessions. There hasn’t been one since 2023.🎲 Jannik Sinner is overwhelming favorite for the French Open men’s title. But its early rounds have been all chaos.🤕 Alexander Blockx’s team may seek compensation after he injured his knee on a tarp during practice and had to withdraw, while Hailey Baptiste was forced to retire from her second-round match with a serious-looking knee injury.😮 How Yuliia Starodubtseva stunned world No. 2 Elena Rybakina to record her best career win.Up next: Second round continues🎾 Women’s singles: Iva Jović (17) vs. Emma Navarro5 a.m. ET on Tru TV, HBO MaxTwo Americans who for most of the year have been on very different trajectories. Jović, still only 18, has been getting better and better, and after a quarterfinal Australian Open appearance in January reached a career-high ranking of No. 16 a couple of months later.Navarro, seven years older at 25, has been headed in the other direction. She ended 2025 as the world No. 10, but had fallen last week to No. 39 after a difficult period that saw her take some time away from the sport to try and recharge. It seemed to have the desired effect as on Saturday Navarro won the Strasbourg Open, a 500-level event a couple of rungs down from the slams, which gave her confidence a big boost.Jović is the more aggressive player, but Navarro will hope she can bring her greater experience and solidity to bear.🎾 Women’s singles: Donna Vekić vs. Naomi Osaka (16)5 a.m. ET on HBO MaxA player who’s achieved great things in the sport but little of note at the French Open, against someone whose finest career moment came at Roland Garros.Naomi Osaka, the No. 16 seed, is a four-time Grand Slam champion but is yet to go beyond the third round in Paris.Donna Vekić, the world No. 72 but a former top-20 player, has not reached a Slam final but won the Olympic silver medal at Roland Garros two years ago.Two huge hitters who will look to get on the front foot, this could come down to who can get the first strike in more often.🎾 Men’s singles: Hubert Hurkacz vs. Frances Tiafoe (19)7 a.m. ET on TruTV, HBO MaxHurkacz has twice reached the fourth round here, while Tiafoe was a quarterfinalist last year. But both would probably rather be playing on any surface but clay. Hurkacz was well-established in the world’s top 10 before injuries started to bite a couple of years ago and then ruled him out of the second half of last year. He’s been gradually trying to rebuild since and picked up a good win against Spain’s Jaume Munar in the first round here Monday.Tiafoe will be the favorite though. He should have the legs if things get physical and has a more rounded game than the sometimes one-dimensional Hurkacz.🎾 Men’s singles: Arthur Rinderknech (22) vs. Matteo Berrettini2:15 p.m. ET on TNTThe highest-ranked Frenchman left in either draw against a former Wimbledon finalist. Both players possess phenomenal firepower, but are at very different parts of the rankings ladder, with Rinderknech at No. 25 and Berrettini at No. 105.Rinderknech will have huge crowd support in what should be a raucous Court Philippe-Chatrier night session, and Berrettini has been so beset by injury that even getting to the second round here is a decent achievement. But if he can roll back the years to the period at the start of the decade when he was a Slam runner-up and world No. 6, then another home player could be in trouble.French Open women’s draw 2026 First Round Second Round Third Round Fourth Round Quarterfinals Semifinals Finals🇧🇾1A. Analyst still clinging to 2026 Chiefs hope
Analyst still clinging to 2026 Chiefs hope originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. There are a lot of people jumping off the Kansas City Chiefs' bandwagon in 2026 for a host of reasons, with the main one being Patrick Mahomes and his health. The receiver room has question marks as well, so Andy Reid and Co. will have their work cut out to convince people they can still be an AFC force in 2026.Given the uncertain nature of Patrick's health, coupled with the questions at receiver, the offense could be Kansas City's biggest problem as it looks to bounce back from a poor 2025 season. But while some are out on Kansas City as a threat, NFL.com's Dan Parr isn't, naming the Chiefs as one team that can dethrone the Seattle Seahawks as champs.“I’m not ready to declare the Andy Reid-Patrick Mahomes Chiefs dead yet, even after witnessing their very ugly unraveling last season,” Parr wrote. “It feels like asking a lot of the Chiefs to get back to playing title-caliber football, but I do believe there is value in knowing what it takes to win in the NFL, and this franchise is only a year removed from playing in three consecutive Super Bowls.“We’ll get a great look at how they measure up to the Seahawks when the teams meet on a Sunday night in Seattle in Week 7.”MORE:Lamar Jackson makes definitive statement on long-term future with RavensAre Chiefs really a threat? When you have Reid and Mahomes, you will always be a threat for the Super Bowl, but perhaps the biggest reason people aren't all in on Kansas City this upcoming season is due to Patrick's knee.If he does return in Week 1, you have to question exactly how healthy he will be. The other part is what if he doesn't return until, say, Week 5 or Week 6? What shape will the Chiefs with Justin Fields be in?So that has to factor in, too. We see players take well over a year to get back to falling somewhat like themselves, and Mahomes is going to try to be back for Week 1; surely, he won't be firing on all cylinders. As long as Patrick is upright, the Chiefs have a chance, even if he's on one leg to start the season.More NFL news:Is Lamar Jackson on board with Ravens' offseason changes?Raiders' Klint Kubiak hints at Ashton Jeanty eyebrow-raising planInsider drops brutal truth on Rashee Rice's future with ChiefsLamar Jackson makes definitive statement on long-term future with RavensLamar Jackson reveals superb 2-word thought on Ravens HC Jesse Minter

Holly Holm: 'I'm game anytime' for Ronda Rousey rematch, reacts to Rousey's return and Katie Taylor rumors
Holly Holm was already in the middle of a late-career resurgence under Jake Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions (MVP) banner. But after MVP’s successful first foray into MMA with its Ronda Rousey vs. Gina Carano event on Netflix, more doors of possibility than ever before have suddenly opened for the former UFC bantamweight champion. Before she started her MMA career in 2011, Holm was already well-established as an all-time great boxer. She has since returned to her pugilistic roots in life after the UFC, debuting under the MVP banner with a unanimous decision win over Yolanda Vega last June. She’ll rematch WBA lightweight champion Stephanie Han this Saturday in El Paso, Texas, after their first meeting in January ended prematurely due to a Han cut.A win for Holm could line her up for a matchup with pound-for-pound great Katie Taylor, who’s expected to cap off her legendary career with one final fight later this year. Holm acknowledged the possibility when speaking Wednesday on “The Ariel Helwani Show.”“That’s why I want to make a statement this Saturday, because a fight like that would be amazing,” Holm told Uncrowned. “I’ve got Irish heritage, and there was talk about it before I even went to MMA. I wondered if I’d ever actually fight her, you know? It might be a full-circle thing. Maybe that comes to fruition. We'll see."I think everybody can see that being an amazing fight, so it's not anything we're overlooking. That's something that's a possibility, but that's as far as I've thought about it. ... That would be the top [goal.]”Despite her success across multiple sports, Holm, 44, will always be remembered most for being the one to topple the aforementioned Rousey at the height of her powers in 2015. As one of Rousey’s final two opponents before her Netflix return over Carano, Holm didn’t ever expect a Rousey comeback to be in the cards. But that also doesn’t mean she was surprised to see it happen, along with Rousey’s 17-second armbar win.“I wasn't shocked when she came back with this fight,” Holm said of her former rival. “I think maybe deep down, there’s just always this hunger she had to get back in there and get a win, and didn’t surprise me that she wanted to. She's been active, still doing physical things. She's still been performing and doing her thing, living her life."Any fighter has it in them, especially if they've been a champion. With her, she's been an Olympian, she's been a champion, and if you have that in you, any fighter that says they're retired or done, I don't ever really believe them because they have that in them."Because of how her last two fights ended in knockouts, it's so easy for people to forget everything before. The reason why she was so dominant with everything before was because she was good at it. She's very good with her judo, and she's very obviously a master with the armbar. So I wasn’t shocked that she came in and was able to win like that. She’s a threat for anybody with that armbar. ... She went in there and did her thing.”A Holm vs. Rousey rematch would have been as big as any fight in combat sports history after the pair squared off a decade ago. Initially, that was the hope too, Holm said.Holly Holm and Ronda Rousey will forever be linked together after their 2015 fight.PAUL CROCK via Getty ImagesInstead, Rousey took her time while recovering from the vicious head-kick knockout she sustained to drop her UFC title. Holm, on the other hand, wasn’t willing to wait around; she went on to suffer a last-second Hail Mary loss to Miesha Tate at UFC 196 in early 2016.No matter how much time has passed, Holm still loves the idea of locking horns with Rousey one more time."I've always been open to a rematch with her since the day the fight was over. So if she wants to rematch, I'm game anytime. I've always said I'm good with a rematch,” Holm said."Right after the fight, it was, 'Hey, do you want to wait for the fight with Ronda?' I said, ‘Well, sure, how long are we going to wait?’ There was no answer because we had no answer from her. She didn't say yes, she just — nothing. And I was, like, ‘Well, I don't want to just sit and wait, because I don't know if she'll ever want to fight or ever want to rematch, or if she does come back, will it be with me? I don't know.’ There was no answer. So I chose to keep fighting, and then it was over a year after we fought, and she fought [Amanda] Nunes and was done. "But I've always said I would rematch her, and I still would to this day. I just think that she wanted to come back, have a fight [with Carano] and then be done. No hate on her for that."Since Rousey’s return win over Carano, and even before it, Rousey was adamant that she only had that one fight left in her. Now her plan is to grow her family with her husband, Travis Browne, while potentially continuing to contribute to MVP in a promotional role. That still leaves Carano, though. The women’s MMA pioneer hasn’t shut the door on another fight, and even spoke after the Rousey loss about how getting to strike in her own long-awaited MMA comeback would have been nice. That sentiment makes Holm sound like a prime option — and it’s certainly one Holm would be open to."I wanted to be able to see her get out there and do more, because I know the hours that go into training,” Holm said. “When you can't really put everything into practice and actually let it go on a fight, I definitely wanted to see more, and I wanted that also for Gina. "Gina is a very good person, and I wanted more for her as well. I watched the fight to watch it. I have respect for both of them. Maybe [we could fight], I really do have a lot of respect for Gina. Not that her and I sit down and have coffee, but we've been friendly over the years. We did train for a little bit in Albuquerque together when she came down, and she was great. And just here and there, just through messaging or social media, just positive things for her life, I'm like, ‘Yeah, hell yeah, go get it.’ And the same thing from her side there. "We have a lot of mutual respect between each other, and I do consider her a friend. But also, would [I] look to share the cage with her? It would be an honor."First things first for Holm, and that’s the Han rematch after their first encounter ended unceremoniously via head clash in January.Having competed professionally for 25 years, Holm is finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. She isn’t completely embracing the notion of retirement, believing that would set her back as a fighter, but she now knows the road has almost reached its end. So, why not compete in the biggest fights possible while she still can?"I definitely know I'm not fighting a crazy amount longer,” Holm said. “Maybe [a year]. It's just — not that I'm not capable, I just really want to keep fighting. And I do want to get a couple more fights in. So we'll see what that means, how far that goes. I know I'm still healthy, capable, can beat the top girls, and so I want to keep fighting, but I know I'm not going to fight forever. So it's just sooner than obviously it was five years ago."

Smith, Kendrick Perkins and othersWe've seen this controversy most recently and prominently with Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, which is what has sparked the discussion as a hot topic, with the Western Conference Finals currently taking place."[flopping] has been a conversation...I would only say that there's a difference between selling a call, exaggeration, and a true flop...to me, if they're not fooling the referees, it's like ok, the players are taught to sell calls these days," Silver said (via @ohnohedidnt24).From Silver's statement, it sounds like he thinks it's a part of the game and that it isn't as big a deal as the fans are making it to be.However, he did go on to say that there's room for improvement. "Can officiating get better? Of course, we're always working on that. Can officials get fooled occasionally? We're always at that as well. The officiating is incredible," Silver said.More NBA articles:NBA players reveal most likely outcome for Giannis Antetokounmpo trade, and it's not what you thinkJaylen Brown revealed as trade candidate for 3 teams by NBA insiderStephon Castle's 2025-26 stats: Fans shocked after Spurs guard gets All-NBA votesWizards receiving inquiries on their No. 1 draft pick from multiple teamsBucks' scouting activity around NBA Draft indicates potential trade ahead

NBA Writer Names What Celtics Should Do With Their First Pick In 2026 Draft
NBA Writer Names What Celtics Should Do With Their First Pick In 2026 Draft originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here. With the Celtics holding the 27th pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, it might be an opportune moment for them to trade that pick to acquire a veteran player who can contribute to their success right now. However, Bleacher Report's Andy Bailey believes Boston should keep the pick rather than trade it."There's maybe an argument to pair this year's pick (No. 27) with Jaylen Brown in an effort to maybe get two contributors making what Brown does ($57.1 million next season) on his own," Bailey wrote on Wednesday."But he and Jayson Tatum are both still on the right side of 30 (though Brown will hit that mark in October), and the Boston Celtics have a pretty good track record for finding contributors late in the first round. Boston will likely hang onto this pick and trust its coaching staff to develop another role player to support its championship-winning duo."Typically, having a late pick in the first round of the draft isn't the best situation for a team hoping to land a potential star player. Yet, this year's draft is quite different. Many draft experts believe this year's class is one of the deepest we've seen, which means there could be players who would have been top-15 picks in other years available late in the first round this summer. If the Celtics decide not to trade the 27th pick in a potential star-player deal, keeping it could allow them to draft and develop a promising talent over the next few years.More NBA: Possible Celtics Draft Target Withdraws From NBA Draft, Opts To Return To College

2025-26 NBA award voting ballots revealed: Who did, didn't vote for OKC Thunder?
Now that the 2025-26 NBA award season is over, we've finally learned the yearly winners. The Oklahoma City Thunder brought home a couple of trophies as they had a league-best 64-18 regular-season record. Both courtesy of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, of course.Gilgeous-Alexander won the 2025-26 MVP award. He was a back-to-back winner in a landslide that was closer to being unanimous than actually competitive. He also brought home the 2025-26 Clutch Player of the Year trophy. By a pretty wide margin, too.Elsewhere, Chet Holmgren finished 2025-26 Defensive Player of the Year runner-up. Of course, Victor Wembanyama was the first unanimous winner ever. Both Thunder players were selected to the All-NBA Team. Holmgren and Cason Wallace also earned an All-Defense Team honor. After the final NBA award was announced, the league released the full voting ballots of all 100 media voters. For context, every NBA market gets at least one voter. There are also plenty of national and international folks who participated in the yearly event. Here's a bunch of Thunder-related fun facts about the NBA's 2025-26 voters' ballot:Who didn't vote Gilgeous-Alexander for MVP?Gilgeous-Alexander grabbed 83 first-place votes. That meant 17 voters had him between second and fourth place. He had 13 second-place votes, three third-place votes and one surprising fourth-place vote. Below are the names of the 17, who were in the minority and stopped the NBA from seeing its second-ever unanimous MVP:Sacramento Bee's Jason Anderson, Miami Herald's Anthony Chiang, Detroit News' Coty Davis, Cleveland's Chris Fedor, AFP's Robin Gremmel, CBS Sports' James Herbert, New York Daily's CJ Holmes, ESPN Latin America's Sebastian Martinez-Christensen, Sport 5's Yoav Modai, Yahoo! Sports' Kevin O'Connor, The Ringer's Michael Pina, Philadelphia Inquirer's Keith Pompey, The Athletic's Jason Quick, beIN Sports' Remi Reverchon, The Ringer's Bill Simmons, SiriusXM NBA Radio's Justin Termine and Prime's Stan Van Gundy.Who didn't vote Gilgeous-Alexander for Clutch Player? If you thought Gilgeous-Alexander was the runaway MVP winner, he enjoyed an even more lopsided final tally for 2025-26 Clutch Player of the Year. He had 96 first-place votes. He had one second-place vote and one third-place vote. That meant two voters left him completely off their ballot. Here were the four who didn't have him in first place:AFP's Robin Gremmel, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's Jim Owczarski, ESPN's Ramona Shelburne, Prime's Stan Van Gundy.Holmgren's DPOY votesBecause of Wembanyama's unanimous Defensive Player of the Year, nobody had Holmgren in first place. Instead, he had 76 second-place votes and 11 third-place votes. Good enough for second place. That meant 13 voters had him outside of their top three. Here are those names:NBA's Steve Aschburner, Charlotte Observer's Rod Boone, Movistar+'s Antoni Daimiel, Rogers Sportsnet's Michael Grange, AFP's Robin Gremmel, SiriusXM's Frank Isola, ESPN's Richard Jefferson, The Athletic's Tony Jones, The Athletic's Law Murray, The Ringer's Michael Pina, Barstool's Ryen Russillo, Sky Italia's Flavio Tranquillo and Prime's Stan Van Gundy.Wallace's DPOY votesFunny enough, Cason Wallace also received some DPOY love. He was featured in four voting ballots. I guess those folks prioritize perimeter defense over rim protection. The four voters were:Movistar+'s Antoni Daimiel, AFP's Robin Gremmel, The Athletic's Law Murray and Sky Italia's Flavio Tranquillo.Mitchell's Sixth Man buzzEven though Ajay Mitchell only suited up for 57 games, he received plenty of mentions in folks' voting ballots. He enjoyed a breakout season with the Thunder. Just as a reminder, the NBA's polarizing 65-game rule doesn't apply to Sixth Man of the Year. Here are the 21 voters who had him in their top-three voting ballot:Sacramento Bee's Jason Anderson, Prime's Brent Barry, The Ringer's Howard Beck, ESPN's Tim Bontemps, FS1's Ric Bucher, ESPN's Katie George, AFP's Robin Gremmel, Yahoo! Sports' Kelly Iko, SiriusXM's Frank Isola, The Ringer's Rob Mahoney, News 9's Steve McGehee, Arizona Republic's Duane Rankin, beIN Sports' Remi Reverchon, AP's Tim Reynolds, Open-Court Basketball's Aurelia Rieke, Barstool's Ryen Russillo, La Gazzetta dello Sport's Simone Sandri, SiriusXM's Justin Termine, Sky Italia's Flavio Tranquillo, Boston Globe's Gary Washburn and ESPN's Brian Windhorst.Daigneault gets Coach of the Year loveThe final award winner that the NBA announced. Joe Mazzulla won it by a pretty comfortable margin. But Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault had some votes. He finished in sixth place. The four names between those two in order were JB Bickerstaff, Mitch Johnson, Charles Lee and Jordan. Here are the six voters who had Daigneault in their top-three ballot:The Guardian's Claire de Lune, SDNA's Tolis Kotzias, Sport 5's Yoav Modai, Arizona Republic's Duane Rankin, NBA's John Schuhmann and Kyodo News' Atsushi Suzuki.All-NBA Team fun factsGilgeous-Alexander had 100 First Team votes. A clean sweep. Holmgren had eight Second Team votes and 63 Third Team votes. He comfortably made it to the top 15 with 87 total voting points. For reference, Deni Avdija was the first guy out in 16th place with 26 total voting points.All-Defense Team fun factsThe Thunder had two representatives on the All-Defense Teams once again. Holmgren made the First Team and Wallace made the Second Team. The former had 93 First Team votes and four Second Team votes. That meant three voters didn't have him in their ballot. Those three were:Charlotte Observer's Rod Boone, Prime's Stan Van Gundy and SiriusXM's Frank Isola. For Wallace's case, he had 14 First Team votes and 66 Second Team votes. That meant 20 voters didn't have him on their ballot. Two other Thunder players garnered All-Defense Team votes. Lu Dort had one First Team vote and 10 Second Team votes. The 11 were La Gazzetta dello Sport's Davide Chinellato, SiriusXM's Frank Isola, ESPN's Richard Jefferson, SDNA's Tolis Kotzias, News 9's Steven McGehee, The Athletic's Jason Quick, La Gazzetta dello Sport's Simone Sandri, ESPN's Ramona Shelburne, ESPN's Stephen A. Smith, Kyodo News' Atsushi Suzuki and The Athletic's Joe Vardon. And Gilgeous-Alexander had one Second Team vote from A Bola's Miguel Candeias.Voter selections for the 2025-26 NBA regular-season awards are now available.A global panel of 100 media members voted on each annual award.Complete ballots ➡️ https://t.co/HM0yqVAj7Npic.twitter.com/Hbu3Imana6— NBA Communications (@NBAPR) May 27, 2026This article originally appeared on OKC Thunder Wire: 2025-26 NBA award voting ballots revealed: Who did, didn't vote for Thunder?
