Four Premier League clubs lining up to sign Chelsea player who is up for sale
Four Premier League clubs lining up to sign Chelsea player who is up for saleThere are now apparently FOUR Premier League clubs lining up to sign Chelsea goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen this summer. The Blues stopper is reportedly up for sale at the end of this season because he wants to be at a club where he is number one.EXCLUSIVE! Chelsea hold talks with Premier League club regarding FIVE transfer deals this summer! If you enjoy Chelsea News coverage and want to see more of it, add us as a preferred source on Google to make us a favourite and see more of our content.Chelsea fans will not be upset if he is sold this summer, I don’t think there are many Blues fans who rate Jorgensen much at all – he’s hardly impressed in a Chelsea shirt. He certainly has some decent traits about him but overall, most Chelsea fans will see this signing as a failure – they paid over £20m to sign him as well, so although it’s not an expensive signing, they are still going to need to get all of that fee back plus a bit more if they can, to sell him this summer.4 PL clubs in for JorgensenFilip Jorgensen against PSG. (Photo by Franco Arland/Getty Images)TEAMtalk are reporting that Chelsea are bracing themselves for the departure of Jorgensen this summer after he formally requested to leave the club.Premier League clubs are apparently expected to move for Jorgensen, with their sources stating that four Premier League sides are keen, with Jorgensen’s reasonable valuation making him an attractive proposition for sides seeking reliable, modern goalkeepers. They do not mention any of the PL clubs that are keen though. In other news today…Mike Penders had a good season for Strasbourg and has been picked for the best under 23 team in Europe’s top 5 leagues. He is up alongside some other top names such as Kenan Yildiz.Chelsea were close to signing Leipzig’s in demand winger Yan Diomande after a trial a few years ago, and now probably wish they had done. Right, who said not to him then? Own up!DOWNLOAD THE OFFICIAL CHELSEA NEWS APP FOR ALL THE LATEST UPDATES – STRAIGHT TO YOUR PHONE! Premier League star out of Barcelona’s plans for next season after big signing – report
Premier League star out of Barcelona’s plans for next season after big signing – reportBarcelona have caused quite a stir in the European transfer market this week, with Anthony Gordon having reportedly passed his medical ahead of a €70 million move from Newcastle, while Bernardo Silva is also expected to arrive on a free transfer. The arrivals signal a clear intent from Hansi Flick and Deco to raise the bar in attack and build a squad capable of competing for the Champions League next season. However, with Gordon arriving to fill the left wing role, one player has been pushed firmly towards the exit door.Rashford out of the pictureRashford’s time at Barcelona might be over. (Photo by David Ramos/Getty Images)According to RAC1, Marcus Rashford is no longer in Barcelona’s plans for next season.Gordon’s arrival directly occupies the space the Englishman had been filling, and on multiple levels the club view the Newcastle winger as an upgrade.Defensively and in terms of pressing intensity, Gordon is considered more suited to Flick’s demands, drawing favourable comparisons to Raphinha in terms of his overall contribution. From a financial perspective, his lower salary and the way his amortisation is distributed also make him a more efficient option under LaLiga’s fair play regulations. What are the chances of Rashford staying?Anthony Gordon likely to replace Rashford. (Photo by Stu Forster/Getty Images)Rashford’s continuation at the club would only be considered if Barcelona fail to sign a striker to replace Robert Lewandowski, a scenario the club currently view as highly unlikely. The decision also reflects a cold-eyed assessment of what this season revealed. Without Raphinha, Barcelona struggled badly, falling out of both the Copa del Rey and the Champions League at the hands of Atletico Madrid. The club are determined not to be exposed in the same way again, and Gordon’s profile offers a genuine like-for-like alternative of the highest quality.

Barcelona defender’s continuity ‘taken for granted’ ahead of summer rebuild
Barcelona defender’s continuity ‘taken for granted’ ahead of summer rebuildBarcelona are making some big moves in the transfer market, as the club look to deploy their €120 million transfer kitty.Anthony Gordon is already set to join the Blaugrana in a €70 million deal, while the club are closing in on the capture of Bernardo Silva on a free transfer as well.Barcelona are also going after Julian Alvarez. But on the defensive front, the club are being a little more apprehensive.Joao Cancelo set to stayBarcelona are aiming to keep hold of Cancelo. (Photo by Alex Caparros/Getty Images)On that note, Barcelona are expected to keep hold of Joao Cancelo, after signing him on loan in the January transfer window. This is according to RAC1, which suggests Barcelona have taken Cancelo’s stay for granted and the player will remain at the club. This is largely because Barça are not expected to face any pushback on the financial fair play front, when it comes to signing Cancelo on a permanent deal. Why Cancelo’s signing is crucialCancelo is expected to stay at Barcelona. (Photo by Eric Alonso/Getty Images)The prolonged stay of Cancelo could be crucial in the context of Barcelona’s defensive setup next season. The Portuguese international has taken no time to settle in and has showcased imperious form in the defensive fullback places. Not to mention, his ability to play on both flanks make him a prized asset for Barça.But more importantly, Cancelo is the only safeguard Barcelona have against Jules Kounde, who has struggled with form and may even leave the club this summer. The upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026, to that end, could be a make or break one for the French international, as he looks to prove himself at the highest stage and potentially regain the clout that has been lost due to poor, inconsistent performances.

Arsenal aiming to dethrone dynasty-chasing PSG
Arsenal will face PSG in the Champions League final in Budapest on Saturday aiming to beat the holders and win it for the first time (FRANCK FIFE)Arsenal seek to finally conquer Europe by wresting the Champions League crown from holders Paris Saint-Germain, who are themselves targeting back-to-back titles in Budapest on Saturday.Luis Enrique's French champions are favourites to defend the trophy and establish an era of dominance in their post-superstar age, with heavyweight attackers Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe departed.Homing in on a career third Champions League trophy as a coach, the Asturian cleaned house after arriving in 2023, and created a cohesive, hard-working and brilliant PSG side in his image.Luis Enrique took them to the semis in his first season, then past Arsenal last year in the final four before crushing Inter Milan to claim the Parisians a first European Cup -- 14 years and well beyond 1 billion euros ($1.2bn) spent since Qatar Sports Investments took over the club.By contrast Arsenal's team has been slow-cooked over nearly seven years by Mikel Arteta, without the overwhelming financial muscle of PSG or domestic rivals Manchester City.Last summer they recognised their developing team was finally ready to triumph and the Gunners reinforced in key areas. It brought a first Premier League title in 22 years and a return to Europe's grandest stage after two decades away, following their 2006 final defeat by Barcelona in Paris. Both teams arrive in Hungary with different reputations in the eyes of the world for the way they play.PSG are the tournament's top scorers with 44 goals, while Arsenal are the team that has conceded fewest, shipping just six and are unbeaten.Ballon d'Or winner Ousmane Dembele, likely to be fit after a calf problem, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Desire Doue lead a thrilling attacking cast for a PSG side that edged Bayern Munich 6-5 in the semi-finals.Beyond the class of winger Bukayo Saka, Arsenal stand out more for their grit and defensive discipline, with centre-back pairing Gabriel and William Saliba their regular stand-out performers, as well as midfield powerhouse Declan Rice.Arteta's team will embrace the underdog role, keeping the champions at bay and leaning on their superior set-piece quality. - 'Two great teams' -Despite their contrasting styles, both sides have emerged as the competition's outstanding teams this season, shaped by two of the game's most demanding coaches.Luis Enrique showed his tactical flexibility in the second leg against Bayern and never likes his team to be predictable."I think we're talking about two great teams –- along with Bayern Munich, the three best teams in Europe," the Asturian coach told UEFA."We'll have to adapt to play and defend in a different way compared to how we usually do if we want to get the better of them."Along with Dembele the PSG right-back Achraf Hakimi is also expected to win his fitness battle for the game, while Arsenal defender Jurrien Timber is doubtful with a groin problem. The French side's regular starters have largely played far fewer minutes than their Arsenal counterparts this season.PSG play fewer matches in general and despite that, Luis Enrique has rotated and rested players regularly.Arsenal were pushed to the limit to claim the English title, while PSG were often able to leave their European starters on the bench domestically.PSG matches against Nantes and Lens were also moved to suit the French club's European campaign.Former Arsenal great Thierry Henry agrees his team enter the clash at the Puskas Arena as underdogs to a PSG side aiming to become the only side in the modern Champions League era to win the competition back-to-back, besides record 15-time winners Real Madrid."We're not at the level of those guys yet so you've got to be humble," Henry told CBS Sports."Paris Saint-Germain have the experience of knowing what it is to win it."The Frenchman finished as a runner-up with Arsenal in 2006, but later won the trophy elsewhere, with Barcelona in 2009.However Arsenal's eventual Premier League triumph, after three consecutive second-place finishes, might give them the confidence they need to write a new chapter in the club's history."They called us bottlers," gloated Arsenal's Myles Lewis-Skelly, brandishing a bottle of champagne during the team's Premier League celebrations. "And now we're holding the bottle."The Gunners hope to be uncorking many more on Saturday night.rbs/dmc

Argentina eye World Cup double ahead of Group J opener
Argentina's Lionel Messi (ELSA)Holders Argentina arrive at the World Cup aiming to become the first team in more than half a century to successfully defend their title.Only two teams – Italy in 1934 and 1938, and Brazil in 1958 and 1962 – have won back-to-back World Cup crowns, underscoring the difficulty of the task facing Lionel Messi and his team-mates.Yet while history suggests the odds are stacked against the 2022 champions, there are grounds for believing that Argentina are more than capable of completing a rare double.Coach Lionel Scaloni has retained the core of the squad that helped carry Argentina to the title in Qatar, with the 38-year-old Messi likely returning to captain the team in what will be a record sixth World Cup appearance. The Argentines cruised through South American qualifiers with ease, losing only four of their 18 matches and finishing nine points clear of second-placed Ecuador. That pedigree is likely to easily see them through a Group J that includes Algeria, Austria and Jordan. The acid test though will come deeper in the tournament when Argentina run into elite European opposition. Scaloni's side, who open their tournament against Algeria in Kansas City on June 16, have not played a single game against a major European team since defeating France in the 2022 final.- Mahrez skippers Algeria -Argentina's biggest Group J threat could well come from Algeria, who are back at the World Cup for the first time since the 2014 finals in Brazil, where they reached the last 16 before being eliminated by Belgium. The Algerians eased through African qualifiers, topping their group to finish seven points clear of second-placed Uganda.Veteran former Manchester City star Riyad Mahrez will captain the side, with the fast and skilful VfL Wolfsburg striker Mohamed Amoura providing the main goal threat.Algeria's first-round campaign also gives them a chance to settle a longstanding score against Group J rivals Austria, 44 years after the two nations met in the group stage at the 1982 World Cup in Spain.Algeria defeated West Germany and Chile in the group stage but were eliminated after West Germany defeated the Austrians 1-0 in a mutually beneficial result that sent both European teams through to the second round. The match, known as "The Disgrace of Gijon", prompted FIFA to play all final group games simultaneously at future tournaments. The Austrians, who are coached by German veteran Ralf Rangnick and captained by Real Madrid's David Alaba, return to the World Cup for the first time since 1998 after qualifying directly ahead of Bosnia and Herzegovina.Asian minnows Jordan round out the group, making their first ever appearance at a World Cup after finishing second behind South Korea in Asian qualifying.rcw/lp

Norway's natural-born goalscorer Haaland finally gets global stage
Erling Haaland has scored 162 goals in four seasons at Manchester City (Oli SCARFF)Erling Haaland propelled Norway back to the World Cup for the first time in 28 years and spearheads a golden generation ready to thrive on the global stage.Despite a tough draw alongside one of the tournament favourites France, African powerhouses Senegal and Iraq, a Norway side also containing Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard is confident of progressing beyond the last 16 for the first time.Odegaard's injury troubles left Haaland to take the lead in a flawless qualification campaign. The Manchester City striker scored 16 times as Stale Solbakken's men plundered 37 goals in eight consecutive wins. That included two thrashings of Italy that ultimately cost the Azzurri a place at the World Cup."I've never experienced Norway being at the World Cup in my life, so I think it was about time," Haaland told FIFA.com."For me personally, it is a huge thing. I have said it for a long time, my big goal is to get Norway to the World Cup... It will feel kind of like a dream come true."Haaland struck twice in a famous 4-1 win in Italy that he said has changed perceptions of what is possible as they head Stateside."We went to San Siro, where not many teams have beaten them in World Cup qualifying, and we've gone and beat them, which shows people we can perform no matter where and no matter what," he added."So, the confidence is there and we're still a young team."- 'Goal machine' -Haaland has been destined for greatness from a young age.Son of former Norwegian international Alf-Inge Haaland and a national heptathlon champion Gry Marita Braut, he possesses a rare blend of blistering pace and a towering 1.95 metre (6ft 5in) frame."If you were building a centre-forward from the ground up, Erling is what you would be left with," former England captain Alan Shearer told The Athletic."He's a goal machine, someone who is quick and direct, who is physically strong and good in the air, who can score with both feet and whose positioning is fantastic."Alf-Inge has been credited with careful management of his son's steady rise through the ranks of European football.Haaland made his debut for his home-town club Bryne aged just 15 before signing for Molde, then managed by former Manchester United forward Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, in 2017.Less than two years later he moved again, joining Austrian club Salzburg. In 2019 Haaland offered an early insight into the devastation he can wreak, scoring nine times in a 12-0 hammering of Honduras at the Under-20 World Cup.But it was his explosion onto the Champions League scene that really caught the eye, with eight goals in six games in the 2019/20 season.Boosted by their reputation for developing young talent, Borussia Dortmund won the race for his signature.Two-and-a-half years and 86 goals in 89 games later, Haaland had his pick of clubs thanks to a cannily negotiated 60 million euro ($70 million) buyout clause that left Dortmund short-changed.Manchester City swooped in and were rewarded by winning the treble in Haaland's 52-goal debut season. In total he has netted 162 goals in less than 200 City appearances, winning three Premier League Golden Boots in the past four seasons. At international level his hit rate is better than a goal-a-game at 55 in 49 caps."It's a different (kind of) gathering, which I really like in football. It brings people together, not only at the stadium in the country, but around the whole world, in front of the TV and all of that," Haaland added on his first taste of a major tournament.Born to deliver on the world stage, Haaland now has the platform he and Norway have long craved.kca/lp

With a stalemate in Ukraine and discontent at home, Putin seems ready to escalate his war
Russian President Vladimir Putin, rear center, attends a ceremony to lay flowers at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier by the Kremlin wall in Moscow, Saturday, May 9, 2026, during celebrations of the 81st anniversary of the Soviet Union's victory over Nazi Germany during the World War II. (Alexander Nemenov/Pool Photo via AP, File)2026-05-29T06:03:12Z Facing a battlefield stalemate in Ukraine and growing war fatigue among Russians, President Vladimir Putin appears ready to try to change the narrative around the conflict. He looks likely to sharply escalate the Russian aerial attacks on the Ukrainian capital in the hope it will shore up his sagging domestic approval ratings and persuade an increasingly pessimistic audience at home that Moscow is winning the war, now in its fifth year.Russia’s warning to carry out “consistent and systematic” missile strikes on Kyiv, accompanied by a call for evacuating foreign embassies from the capital, signals Putin’s intention to expand Russia’s barrage despite the heavy costs and potential international outrage.Massive drills of Russia’s nuclear forces earlier this month and a series of belligerent statements from Moscow warning Kyiv’s European allies about possible retaliation for what the Kremlin cast as their involvement in Ukrainian drone attacks have underlined Putin’s intention to up the ante. As Russia’s advance stalls, Ukraine boosts long-range strikesAfter a series of gains last year, Russia’s advances along the over 1,000-kilometer (600-mile) front line have ground to a near halt recently, and Ukraine’s armed forces have launched successful counterstrikes and reclaimed some ground.“The character of the war is shifting in favor of Ukrainian forces, at least for now,” the Washington-based Institute for the Study of War said in a recent analysis. “Russian forces’ rates of advances are stagnating while Ukrainian forces are employing novel tactics and operational concepts in efforts to break out of positional warfare.” The battlefield gridlock undermines Putin’s declared goal of quickly capturing the eastern Donetsk region still under Ukrainian control. Kyiv has rejected his demands to withdraw from the region as a condition for a ceasefire. Read More At the same time, Ukraine has significantly expanded its long-range strikes on Russian energy facilities and arms factories, inflicting increasing damage. Putin scaled down the annual May 9 Victory Day parade, fearing Ukrainian drone strikes. Days later, a massive drone attack on Moscow’s suburbs killed three and showed that even the densely protected capital isn’t fully immune from assault, shattering Kremlin efforts to cast the conflict as something distant that doesn’t affect ordinary Russians.Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the attacks were “significantly changing the situation — and, more broadly, the world’s perception of Russia’s war.”Acknowledging the growing threat of Ukraine’s deep strikes, Russian lawmakers this week approved a bill that says the country’s banks should bear the cost of installing drone-jamming systems on their premises, rather than rely on the military.“From Russia’s perspective, these attacks are just going to get worse,” said Thomas Withington of the Royal United Services Institute in London. He added that Ukraine’s increasingly audacious drone attacks were “exacting not only a political but an economic cost in Russia.” The war is taking a toll on the Russian economy and moraleRussia’s economy has stagnated as the initial boost from massive military spending has petered out. The government has raised taxes and increased domestic borrowing to keep the budget deficit under control. And even though the U.S. war in Iran has meant windfall oil revenues for Russia, fundamental economic challenges remain.Putin is expected to play down the negative dynamics at next week’s international economic forum in St. Petersburg, an annual event intended to showcase Russia’s achievements.Nigel Gould-Davies of the London-based International Institute for Strategic Studies said in an analysis that “war-fueled high prices of capital, labor and goods, as well as rising taxes, have begun to depress the civilian sectors,” resulting in “a dual economy of overheated military output and civilian stagnation.”While Russia has relied on volunteer soldiers to fight the war, offering them comparatively high wages and other benefits, Gould-Davies argued that “there are signs that this incentive may no longer be working effectively, and that Russia has begun to lose more troops than it can recruit.” To sustain the war, the Kremlin will have to forcibly mobilize human and material resources, requiring it to “curtail the last remaining post-Soviet market freedoms, labor freedom, and freedom of movement,” he said.In a sign of brewing discontent, some social media influencers previously loyal to the Kremlin have started to openly criticize government policies.A move by authorities to restrict cellphone internet and block popular messaging apps has upset daily routines for millions, causing open grumbling. Natalya Kasperskaya, a prominent IT entrepreneur and a staunch Kremlin supporter, harshly criticized the shutdowns and attempts to block virtual private networks, warning that they cause massive damage to the tech sector. Tatyana Stanovaya, a Russia expert who founded the R.Politik newsletter focused on Kremlin politics, noted the spreading Ukrainian drone attacks along with mobile internet shutdowns and rising taxes have eroded Putin’s standing. While he faces no immediate threats to his rule, “the gradual fading of Putin’s credibility is real,” she said.In early spring, Russian opinion polls, including one by a government-run pollster, recorded a dip in Putin’s approval ratings, although they rose slightly in May in the state-controlled poll after the organization changed its methodology to include face-to-face interviews. Many observers believe the numbers may be inflated amid a widespread crackdown on dissent.“Putin is losing his magic,” Alexander Baunov of the Carnegie Russia Eurasia Center wrote in a commentary. “Power remains undivided in his hands, but its spell is fading. Even loyalists complain about the mounting restrictions and repression, and once-upbeat businesspeople are now despondent.”Russia’s new threats to Ukraine and the WestCiting a May 22 Ukrainian drone attack on a college dormitory in Russian-occupied eastern Ukraine that Moscow said killed 21 people, Putin ordered a massive missile strike on Kyiv and its surrounding region. Sunday’s barrage that involved Russia’s new hypersonic Oreshnik missile killed two, injured scores of others and destroyed or damaged many buildings. On Monday, the Russian Foreign Ministry said Moscow will launch “consistent and systematic” strikes on Kyiv to target drone-making facilities and “decision-making centers.” It urged foreign diplomats to leave the capital — a demand rejected by Ukraine’s allies.Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov called U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio to warn him of the coming strikes and push for the evacuation of its diplomats.“The danger in all of these wars as they continue and then they go on is that they always have the threat of escalation, of spreading into something new,” Rubio told reporters after the call. The Iran war has effectively put U.S. mediation efforts in Ukraine on hold and drained American missile arsenals, delaying the delivery of U.S.-made Patriot missiles that Ukraine desperately needs to fend off Russian attacks.Moscow-based military analyst Sergei Poletaev said Russia sees the shortage of air defense assets in Kyiv as an opportunity.“Kyiv’s air defenses have been exhausted enough to make a massive attack efficient,” he said in a recent commentary.Accompanying the declared blitz on Kyiv, Russia issued a barrage of threats aimed at Ukraine’s European allies. The Defense Ministry published a list of facilities in Europe that it said were involved in manufacturing drones and their components for Ukraine. And Moscow’s Foreign Intelligence Service warned the Baltic nations that their NATO membership won’t protect them from Moscow’s retaliation if they allow Ukraine to launch attacks from their territory. Those allies have denounced Moscow’s claims. “We are actually very, very close to direct military confrontation,” said Dmitry Polyansky, Russia’s envoy to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. 获取更多RSS:https://feedx.net https://feedx.site

Palestinians mourn 10 killed in Eid strikes as Netanyahu vows wider control of the strip
Palestinians mourn over the bodies of Hamas militant Imad Isleim, foreground, his wife and daughter, who were killed in an Israeli military strike, during their funeral at Al-Shafi'i Mosque in Gaza City, Thursday, May 28, 2026. (AP Photo/Jehad Alshrafi) CORRECTION: Corrects surname from al-Salem to Isleim2026-05-28T17:33:04Z GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) — Dozens of Palestinians in Gaza City gathered on Thursday for funeral prayers for 10 people killed in Israeli strikes the night before, including five children and an elderly person, as well as a Hamas militant. More than 20 people were injured in the strikes, according to Shifa Hospital. Video from the scene showed flames pouring from an upper-floor window of a building, while bystanders rushed to carry wounded people, including children, to ambulances.Mohammed Shawish, who was wounded and lost his wife in the strikes, broke down in tears as he held her body at the hospital morgue, saying, “I married my wife for love. For God’s sake, I chose her because of love.”The strikes took place on the first day of Eid al-Adha, or the “Feast of Sacrifice,” an Islamic holiday celebrated by millions of Muslims worldwide. The Israeli military said Wednesday evening it had launched strikes in the northern Gaza Strip targeting two Hamas militants. Among those killed was Hamas fighter Imad Isleim. On Thursday, mourners carried his body wrapped in a white shroud with a Hamas flag draped over it. His death came as a “shock” to the family, even though they knew it could happen at any time, his cousin Nidal Isleim said. The strikes came as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel was expanding its control in Gaza.“Right now we are tightening the grip on Hamas,” Netanyahu said Thursday at the Jordan Valley Conference in the occupied West Bank. “We are now in 60% of the territory of the Gaza Strip. You know that? We were at 50%, we moved to 60%.” Read More He said the next step was to move to 70% control, with Israel “tightening the grip” on Hamas “from every direction.” “We will deal with the remnants,” Netanyahu said. “But the most important thing is to continue leveraging our power, to increase it.”The conference was part of a broader discussion on the war, Iran, Hezbollah, Gaza and regional strategy. “There is still more work. What is happening right now is truly a global change. There is no doubt about that,” Netanyahu added.Earlier this week, an Israeli strike killed Mohammed Odeh, the newly appointed leader of Hamas’ military wing, the Qassam Brigades, less than two weeks after his predecessor was also killed.Across the Gaza Strip, 16 people were killed and 39 others wounded over the past 48 hours, Gaza’s health ministry said in an update on Thursday. The ministry is part of Gaza’s Hamas-run government, but is staffed by medical professionals who maintain and publish detailed records viewed as generally reliable by the international community.Since a fragile ceasefire came into effect last October, 922 people have been killed in Gaza and 2,786 others injured, according to the ministry.___This story has corrected the location where Netanyahu spoke.

Russian drone launched against Ukraine crashes in Romania, injuring 2
In this image made from video provided by Russian Defense Ministry Press Service on Wednesday, May 27, 2026., Russian servicemen prepare to launch an interceptor drone for an action in an undisclosed location in Ukraine. (Russian Defense Ministry Press Service via AP)2026-05-29T03:52:31Z BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) — A Russian drone that was part of an overnight attack on Ukraine crashed into an apartment building in eastern Romania, injuring two people, Romanian authorities said Friday. In response to the crash, NATO member Romania asked the alliance for a faster transfer of anti-drone capabilities, the Foreign Ministry said, calling the drone’s flight a serious violation of international law.The drone was tracked by radar in Romanian airspace and crashed onto the roof of a building in Galati, Romania’s Defense Ministry said in a statement. The impact was followed by a fire. Two people suffered minor injuries, and several people were evacuated. Police and other agencies responded at the scene. Galati is on the Danube River, east of the Moldova and Ukraine borders. The Romanian military scrambled two F-16 fighter jets and a helicopter that were authorized to engage targets, and alert messages were sent to residents of the affected areas. Russia has been using long-range ballistic missiles and drones to damage Ukraine’s power grid and hammer cities, and Ukraine has braced for further heavy bombardments. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the incident showed that “Russia’s war of aggression has crossed yet another line.”“A Russian drone incursion struck a densely populated area in Romania, injuring civilians,” she said in a social media post. “On EU territory.’ Read More She added that the EU will keep strengthening security along its eastern border and was actively drafting another set of sanctions against Russia, the 21st so far.Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Thursday he was pressing the United States to provide more Patriot air defense missiles that can counter the Russian attacks. He warned that deliveries to Ukraine are falling dangerously short as the Iran war diverts and depletes U.S. stocks. “I believe (the U.S.) must act quicker. We are being very persistent,” Zelenskyy told reporters during a visit to Sweden. U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres warned the U.N. Blue Origin rocket explodes on the launch pad during an engine-firing test
A Blue Origin New Glenn rocket stands ready for launch at the Cape Canaveral Space Force station in Cape Canaveral, Fla., April 18, 2026. (AP Photo/John Raoux, File)2026-05-29T02:06:54Z CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — A rocket belonging to Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin exploded during a test at the launch pad Thursday night, shaking nearby homes and briefly painting the sky orange. Blue Origin said its New Glenn rocket exploded during an engine-firing test being conducted ahead of a satellite launch planned for next week. No one was hurt, according to officials at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.“It’s too early to know the root cause but we’re already working to find it,” Bezos said via X. “Very rough day, but we’ll rebuild whatever needs rebuilding and get back to flying. It’s worth it.”The massive New Glenn was grounded in April after it left a satellite in the wrong orbit because of engine failure. It was only the third flight of the rocket that Blue Origin intends to use to launch landers to the moon for NASA, including the landers that will take astronauts to the lunar surface. The company had been on track to launch a prototype lunar lander to the moon on a flight test this fall. Earlier this week, the space agency awarded Blue Origin a contract worth hundreds of millions of dollars to launch a pair of moon buggies in the next few years as part of the Artemis program. “Spaceflight is unforgiving, and developing new heavy-lift launch capability is extraordinarily difficult,” NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman said via X. He promised to provide information on any impacts to the Artemis program, including the moon base that he recently outlined. Read More Homes shook in nearby Cape Canaveral and Cocoa Beach around 9 p.m., with residents turning to social media to wonder what happened. Launch Complex 36 is visible from the beach, and the internet quickly filled with photos of an orange fireball. The rocket was supposed to blast off next week with internet satellites that are part of the Amazon Leo constellation in orbit.Emergency crews remained more than an hour after the explosion. Officials stressed there was no threat due to fumes or other potential hazards. Space Force officials said the explosion would not affect upcoming launches by other companies from other pads. United Launch Alliance’s Atlas V rocket is due to blast off Friday night with a batch of Amazon Leo satellites, the same kind that this rocket was supposed to take up.SpaceX’s Elon Musk, who’s had his own share of rocket explosions, offered his condolences. “Sorry to see this, I hope you recover quickly,” he told Blue Origin via X.Towering at 321 feet (98 meters), New Glenn made its debut in 2025. It is named after John Glenn, the first American to orbit Earth, and is much bigger and more powerful than the New Shepard rockets that have carried tourists to the fringes of space from Texas.___The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Department of Science Education and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Pam Bondi to face closed-door questioning from House lawmakers over Epstein files
Attorney General Pam Bondi faces questions in the House Judiciary Committee over the Justice Department's handling of files related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, at the Capitol in Washington, Feb. 11, 2026. (AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite, File)2026-05-29T04:01:40Z WASHINGTON (AP) — Former Attorney General Pam Bondi is testifying before House lawmakers investigating Jeffrey Epstein’s sexual abuse cases, a long-awaited appearance that brings fresh scrutiny of the administration’s botched release of the Epstein case files.Bondi was defiant in previous public testimony when she was confronted by lawmakers about the Epstein investigation. It’s unclear whether she’ll bring the same approach Friday, now that she is no longer in charge of the Justice Department. The session will be held behind closed doors. The transcribed interview will give lawmakers a chance to dig for information on the Trump administration’s handling of the Epstein files and other related matters, including the prison sentence of his former girlfriend and confidant, Ghislaine Maxwell. The Justice Department moved Maxwell to a prison camp in Texas last August. “I think she absolutely could clear up many missing pieces if she wanted to,” said Rep. Yassamin Ansari, an Arizona Democrat on the House Oversight Committee. “Now it’s a question of whether or not she is willing to be transparent.” Lawmakers are trying to find out what decisions prosecutors have made about investigating Epstein associates, how the Justice Department handled the congressional mandate to release the Epstein case files and whether President Donald Trump was involved in the process. Read More Bondi, who revealed this week that she is being treated for thyroid cancer, has stayed within Trump’s orbit even after being ousted from her job in early April. Trump appointed her to a White House panel on artificial intelligence this week, and Bondi will be accompanied Friday by Justice Department officials, including Harmeet Dhillon, who heads the department’s Civil Rights Division, acting as her counsel.Democrats say that arrangement is a conflict of interest.A spokesperson for the Justice Department said the officials were there to help lawmakers understand the department’s process for releasing the case files. Bondi was central to the Epstein sagaBondi has been central to the political firestorm over Epstein, initially raising expectations for the full release of what’s known as the Epstein files, only to later backtrack. That reversal prompted Congress to step in and pass a law requiring the release.Bondi faced even more backlash when the Justice Department’s release of the files was delayed and then included personal information of several potential victims. She has insisted in congressional hearings that she was trying to follow the law.The House Oversight Committee, meanwhile, has been conducting a wide-ranging investigation into Epstein that spans multiple presidential administrations. The interview format is already contentiousBondi was subpoenaed by the committee in March in a bipartisan vote, but she tried to head off that demand by holding a closed-door meeting with lawmakers that same month. The maneuver only added to the enmity between Bondi and Democrats on the committee.Bondi’s departure from the Justice Department also raised doubts about the enforcement of the congressional subpoena. After the committee’s Democrats maneuvered to press for a civil contempt of Congress resolution against Bondi, she agreed to sit for a transcribed interview rather than a sworn deposition. Democrats on the Oversight panel have criticized that arrangement, saying that it allows Bondi to decline to answer questions. They have also pressed the Republican chair of the committee, Rep. James Comer, to record the interview on video.“A failure to film and release a video of Ms. Bondi’s testimony would present a grave injustice to the American people and survivors of Epstein’s crimes,” the committee’s top Democrat, Rep. Robert Garcia, wrote to Comer.Comer has said he is allowing Bondi to sit for a transcribed interview rather than a deposition as an incentive to cooperate. Previously, he had enforced a subpoena on former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton after they resisted the demand. Both of their depositions were video-recorded.Still, Comer said Bondi could face prosecution if she lies to Congress. He said the committee would also release a transcript of the interview.“Hopefully that will be good enough,” he said. STEPHEN GROVES Groves covers Congress for The Associated Press. twitter mailto

RR vs GT, IPL 2026 Qualifier 2: Can Gujarat Titans crack the Vaibhav Sooryavanshi code?
NEW CHANDIGARH: The last time Mohammed Siraj ran in at Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, the contest lasted only a couple of overs, but still captured the mood of this IPL season. After being swatted for six in the first over, and then hit for three boundaries in Siraj’s second, the Gujarat Titans pacer banged one in short and hostile and eventually had the 15-year-old undone. In the same innings, Kagiso Rabada too discovered that reputation and pace can mean little to a teenager who bats as if consequences are someone else’s problem. On Friday night at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Stadium here, that duel returns with far greater stakes attached.Qualifier 2 between Rajasthan Royals and Gujarat Titans is not merely a fight for a place in the final. It also brings together a polished, system-driven bowling unit and a young batter who has altered the emotional tempo of this tournament, one swing at a time.Gujarat Titans arrive bruised after Royal Challengers Bengaluru dismantled their highly-rated bowling attack in Qualifier 1. For much of the season, GT’s fast bowlers have operated like a well-drilled unit — Siraj with his skiddy aggression, Rabada with bursts of hostility and Prasidh Krishna extracting awkward bounce. Together, they have built GT’s campaign on discipline rather than spectacle. But Sooryavanshi does not appear particularly interested in discipline. His astonishing 97 off 29 balls against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Eliminator felt less like an innings and more like a passage of play unfolding at double speed. Even Pat Cummins was dragged into the rush, and every over carried danger for the bowler.GT, on the other hand, remain structurally dependent on consistency. Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan build innings with precision, Jos Buttler supplies acceleration and their bowlers usually squeeze opponents into errors. It is cricket played with method rather than chaos. The challenge for them is obvious. If Sooryavanshi survives the opening exchanges, the geometry of the game changes rapidly. And yet, Gujarat will believe they have found some clues. The teenager’s occasional discomfort against the short ball remains one of the few visible points of attack in an otherwise intimidating batting profile. Siraj exploited it once; others have tried through the tournament. The question is whether GT can persist with that plan without allowing Sooryavanshi room to free his arms square of the wicket.GT assistant coach Parthiv Patel was careful not to reveal tactical specifics but acknowledged the scale of the challenge. “I’m very excited about the way he (Sooryavanshi) is batting. Hopefully, we will be able to get him out early,” he added.Rajasthan Royals, increasingly, are being powered by two forces — Sooryavanshi’s hitting at the top and Jofra Archer’s pace with the ball. Yashasvi Jaiswal’s contributions, meanwhile, have almost slipped behind the glare created by his teenage opening partner.Parthiv defended that approach strongly despite criticism following their heavy loss to RCB. “We know what kind of cricket we want to play,” he said. “We trust in our ability. We know what we can do. Since GT’s inception, four out of five years, we have qualified (for the playoffs). The results are there for everyone to see.”

'Biggest circus in town' the World Cup set for betting frenzy
Betting revenue for this year's World Cup is likely to be over 50 billion dollars, dwarfing the amount bet when Argentina won in 2022 (FRANCK FIFE)Global betting revenue for the upcoming World Cup is likely to be "in excess of $50 billion", betting expert Darren Small told AFP, for an event he labelled "the biggest circus in town."The revenue will be significantly higher than the 2022 edition, partly because the quadrennial football fiesta has been enlarged to 48 teams from the 32 in Qatar.Another factor according to Small, Managing Director of Managed Trading Services at Sportradar, is punters have become more "interested in the celebrity of a player" than in the old days of betting simply on a team.Sportradar Group AG is a global sports technology company that says it creates immersive experiences for sports fans and bettors."We expect a lot of interest around the player props and what we call bet builders or custom bet options," Small told AFP in an interview."So we're anticipating that that's going to be a big drive for us. We're going to see a lot more interest on that."So players scoring left foot, right foot, number of passes, tackles, whatever the numbers are."Then subsequently the customers taking that and building out narratives like stories of 'I think this game will be X team to win with both teams to score, player X scoring with his head and there being 15 corners'.""The sheer size and scale of this tournament will ensure it is the biggest betting event ever," David Stevens, head of Public Relations at English bookmaker Coral, told AFP.Stevens said Bet Builder was "one of the fastest growing areas of our business" which sates the appetite of a "new, younger customer base" who are looking "for more dynamic betting opportunities."Small said most money in bets already placed with Sportradar's 250 sports books clients across the globe has gone on Argentina and France. However, Stevens said there remains a considerable number of people hoping England end a 60-year wait for a second World Cup."They are in fact third favourites, behind only France and Spain, and should Thomas Tuchel end 60 years of hurt, we bookmakers will be facing a significant payout," he said."However, the increasingly global nature of our business means an England victory would not be as costly as it would have been a decade ago, for example."- 'Peculiar not sinister' -With regard to the individual stars, great interest surrounds the Golden Boot for top scorer with French star Kylian Mbappe and Norway's hitman Erling Haaland attracting a lot of money."In excess of 20 percent of our volume and our tickets... have been struck on Haaland so far," said Small. However, Small is more intrigued by another name that features for the moment in the top 10 of potential top scorers thanks to bets placed. It is fair to say that Port Vale -- who have just been relegated to the fourth tier of the English league -- have not had many players represent them at a World Cup finals. However, the club's New Zealand striker Ben Waine is the one where the money is being placed."We've seen a bit of a run on New Zealand's centre forward into the top 10 of the betting for the World Cup," said Small."It's really strange, as in peculiar not sinister."Both Small and Stevens agree the geographical spread of the matches at a tournament being co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico does present problems."The only challenge that we have is obviously times, from the European audience perspective," said Small."The West Coast games will put a bit of pressure on that because they're going to be difficult to follow for the people that are trying to follow from Europe."But we've also got a very active South American region now with Brazil and others."There has been little interest in a US win but should they cause a huge upset then their captain might face competition from President Donald Trump as to who holds the trophy aloft."Should the USA defy odds of 40-1 and lift the trophy, expect very short odds about the President being at the centre of the celebrations!" said Stevens. pi/gj

Has Glasner changed how Palace 'look at competitions'?
[Getty Images]When Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish first met Oliver Glasner in late 2023, he had no idea it would be a meeting that would change the course of the club's history. It was then sporting director, Dougie Freedman, who had set up the get-together in south London. Freedman had tracked Glasner's career trajectory in the Bundesliga with Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt and was impressed with what he saw.Roy Hodgson was in charge at Selhurst Park at the time, but there was pressure on the club to make a change.Parish would have usually preferred to appoint a manager with some Premier League history, but there was something about Glasner that impressed the businessman.Wind forward two-and-a-half years, and Glasner has just led Crystal Palace to Conference League glory with a 1-0 win over Rayo Vallecano in Leipzig. It will be his final game in charge - but it comes at the end of a scarcely-believable 12-month period of unprecedented success."He has got to be one of the best managers Crystal Palace has ever had," said Palace midfielder Adam Wharton. "He has made a massive difference to how the club looks at competitions."We are not just looking to stay in the Premier League and be in Europe, we are looking to win and be as high as possible."When Glasner bid farewell to Selhurst Park on Sunday, following the final Premier League game of the season, the Austrian made sure he had time to poke fun at his past disagreements with Parish."Now I'm leaving, I don't have to agree with the chairman," he said with a smile. "He said the best day was the FA Cup final, but I don't agree. The best day is still to come in Leipzig."It was a light-hearted exchange that underlined Palace's confidence as they prepared for a first European final - a far cry from where they found themselves at the start of the year. The Conference League final victory - which guarantees Palace a spot in next season's Europa League - is the final chapter of Glasner's career with the Eagles."Right now, I can't even believe it is the last game," said Glasner post-match. "It is a good chapter to read in the Crystal Palace book, but other good chapters will follow."I said to the players after the FA Cup [win], go and get what you deserve - the Europa League."Crystal Palace supporters have never had it so good.Read the full article here

Israeli and Russian forces added to UN blacklist for sexual violence in conflict zones
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres speaks during a Security Council meeting at United Nations headquarters, Tuesday, May 26, 2026. (AP Photo/Seth Wenig)2026-05-28T23:44:16Z UNITED NATIONS (AP) — An annual United Nations report documenting sexual violence in conflicts worldwide has included Israeli forces for the first time since the review began more than 15 years ago for their treatment of Palestinian detainees. Israel denies the accusations. The 35-page report — shared by the Israeli mission to the U.N. late Thursday ahead of its expected release Friday — blacklists 77 government and non-government parties in a dozen countries suspected of committing or being responsible for sexual violence in conflicts around the world. It says the number of cases rose sharply in 2025 from 2024.Russian armed and security forces were also blacklisted for the first time this year for sexual violence against prisoners of war and civilians detained during the war in Ukraine. The list for 2025 includes Israel’s armed and security forces as well as Hamas militants, who were previously blacklisted after their attack in Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, which sparked the war in Gaza. Both Israel and Russia were warned in last year’s report by U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres that they could be put on the list. The ambassadors of both countries expressed outrage at their inclusion and lashed out at Guterres. “We will write a letter to the secretary-general saying that these are unsubstantiated lies and alleged things which again portray Russia as a villain, like they do all the time,” Russia’s U.N. Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia said. He said Russia is documenting and preparing a report on how the Ukrainians are treating Russian prisoners of war. Read More “We are done with this UN Secretary-General,” Danny Danon, the Israeli ambassador to the U.N., said in a statement on social media. “Guterres has put Israel on the same blacklist along with Hamas, ISIS and the most depraved terrorist organizations in the world.” Guterres’ second five-year term ends Dec. 31. Danon said Israel had provided documents, data and detailed responses to the allegations that are raised in the report. The report said in 2025 the U.N. was able to document “patterns of sexual violence” against Palestinians detained in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories, and verified multiple incidents of conflict-related sexual violence, including as a form of torture, inflicted on 14 men, seven women, nine boys and one girl from Gaza and the West Bank. It said 13 cases occurred in 2025 and 18 in 2023 and 2024.“Violations consisted of rape, including with objects, gang rape, attempted rape, physical violence to the genitals, instances of targeted shooting of the genitals, touching of breasts and genitals, strip and cavity searches conducted without apparent security justification, forced nudity and threats of rape,” the report stated. It detailed at least nine victims, mostly from Gaza, who were raped or gang raped, in some cases repeatedly, by perpetrators from the Israel Defense Forces and Israel’s prison service, its special forces and police units. Israel’s foreign ministry said Thursday it has “comprehensively, thoroughly, and unequivocally refuted these allegations.” “This decision is yet another example of the UN’s long-standing, institutionalized hostility toward Israel,” the foreign ministry wrote on X. The report again includes accusations of sexual violence by Hamas, but says many of the details could not be independently confirmed because the Israeli government continues to deny the U.N. the access it needs to carry out investigations. Russian authorities also consistently deny access to U.N. human rights investigators, the report said, but they still were able to verify 310 cases of conflict-related sexual violence in Russia and Russian-occupied areas of Ukraine against prisoners of war and civilian detainees. The vast majority of the victims were men, the report said.Human rights monitors in Ukraine documented 31 cases of conflict-related sexual violence against prisoners of war and civilian detainees, the majority of which occurred prior to 2025, the report said. Ukraine has not been put on the U.N. blacklist. FARNOUSH AMIRI Amiri covers foreign policy and the United Nations as a correspondent for The Associated Press, based in New York. twitter mailto

In this Oct. 26, 1992 file photo, Fabrice Morvan, left, and Rob Pilatus of Milli Vanilli perform during the taping of the Arsenio Hall Show in Los Angeles. (AP Photo/Craig Fujii, File)2026-05-28T16:39:24Z NEW YORK (AP) — A day after the President Donald Trump -affiliated Freedom 250 announced the “first wave” of performers for “The Great American State Fair” shows on Washington’s National Mall in June and July, the lineup has been hit with a wave of cancellations. Young MC, Morris Day, the Commodores and Martina McBride are among the scheduled acts who have said they will not be appearing. Scheduled performers also include Milli Vanilli, the pop duo from the 1980s who were discredited after it was revealed that their frontmen, Rob Pilatus and Fab Morvan, were only lip-syncing. Milli Vanilli won a Grammy in 1990 for Best New Artist, but the award was rescinded after the scandal broke. Pilatus died in 1998, while Morvan has attempted a solo career and published a memoir, “You Know It’s True: The Real Story of Milli Vanilli.”Morvan recently told The Guardian newspaper that he owns the Milli Vanilli name, and he said in a statement Thursday that he would be performing at the Great American State Fair. “I am here to entertain and unite people, not divide them,” Morvan said. “Let’s celebrate life & music and take a trip down memory lane. I feel honored to be a part of as it will celebrate the 250 Year Anniversary of America with so many other accomplished artists.” A Freedom 250 spokesperson did not immediately respond Thursday to a request for comment. Freedom 250, which Trump launched late last year, describes itself as a “national, non-partisan organization leading the celebration of our Nation’s 250th birthday.” Trump appointed Keith Krach, who served as an under secretary of state during his first term, as the organization’s CEO. Read More Trump and his supporters have long had a contentious relationship with the music community. Celine Dion, Elton John and Guns ’N Roses are among the many artists who have objected to their music being played at Trump rallies. Country singer McBride wrote Thursday on social media that she had agreed to perform after she “was assured this was a nonpartisan event.”“Yesterday things started changing and what we were told is, in fact, not what is happening,” she said.In an Instagram post, Young MC questioned whether the National Mall shows would be nonpartisan. “The artists were never told about any political involvement with the event,” he wrote, adding that he hoped to “perform in D.C. in the near future at an event that is not so politically charged.” Day posted on Instagram, “Contrary to rumor, Morris Day & The Time will not be performing at the ‘GREAT AMERICAN STATE FAIR.” McBride was scheduled for June 25. Young MC and Milli Vanilli were among those on the roster for an “I Love the ‘90s” concert on June 26. Day was listed for June 27. Other performers announced include Flo Rida and Bret Michaels. The Great American State Fair is scheduled to run June 25-July 10.At least one “I Love the 90s” act will be there: Vanilla Ice. “He is proud to help celebrate America’s 250th Anniversary!” a representative for the “Ice Ice Baby” rapper wrote in an email to the AP. “Everyone is welcome to attend and celebrate USA’s Birthday and our Freedom!” HILLEL ITALIE Italie has covered the publishing industry since 1998. A history of E. Jean Carroll’s legal battle with President Donald Trump
    E. Jean Carroll arrives at Manhattan federal court, May 9, 2023, in New York. (AP Photo/John Minchillo, File)2026-05-28T21:36:02Z NEW YORK (AP) — The former advice columnist E. Jean Carroll has been battling President Donald Trump in court for nearly seven years over her allegation that he sexually assaulted her in the dressing room of a fancy Manhattan department store in 1996.The fight has gone mostly in Carroll’s favor, with one jury finding Trump liable for attacking her and a second awarding her tens of millions of dollars in damages for Trump’s public attacks on her credibility. But numerous news organizations, citing anonymous sources, have reported that Trump’s Justice Department has opened an investigation into whether Carroll lied under oath during the civil litigation. A person familiar with the matter, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly discuss an ongoing inquiry, said the perjury investigation is being led by the federal prosecutors’ office in Chicago. That person later clarified that the actual focus was on a nonprofit that had helped fund Carroll’s case. Late Thursday, Andrew Boutros, the U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, denied the reports. He issued a statement saying his office “has not opened — and has never opened — a criminal investigation into E. Jean Carroll.”Here’s a look at the history of the legal fight between Carroll and Trump. Carroll’s allegations and Trump’s denialsCarroll first went public with her story about being sexually assaulted by Trump in June 2019, when an excerpt from her soon-to-be-released memoir “What Do We Need Men For?” was published in New York magazine. In the book, she described bumping into Trump while shopping at Bergdorf Goodman, flirting with him, then physically fighting him off after he sexually assaulted her in a dressing room. The claims drew angry denials from Trump.“I’ve never met this person in my life. She is trying to sell a new book — that should be sold in the fiction section,” he said in a statement.“Number one, she’s not my type. Number two, it never happened,” he said in another statement. Read More Carroll sues Trump for defamationIn 2019, Carroll filed a libel lawsuit against Trump, saying his claims that she made the story up had “smeared her integrity, honesty and dignity — all in the national press.”That legal claim wound up being bogged down for years over the legal question of whether, in denying the allegations, Trump had been fulfilling his duties as president. Trump claimed that as a federal employee carrying out his job, he was shielded from the defamation lawsuit. At the time Carroll filed the legal claim, she was barred by law from suing him over the alleged sexual assault because so many years had passed. New York changes the lawIn 2022, New York changed its laws to give sexual abuse survivors a fresh chance to sue over attacks that happened in the distant past. Carroll was one of the first people to take advantage, filing a new legal claim against Trump alleging that he had raped her. She also sued over things he had said about her after leaving the White House. That lawsuit moved more quickly through the courts. It went to trial in New York City in 2023.Trump chose not to attend, leaving his lawyers to argue the case on his behalf. The jury found that while Carroll had not proved she had been raped, under New York’s definition of that crime, Trump had sexually abused her. It also found that he had made some false statements about her that had damaged her reputation. Jurors awarded Carroll $5 million. A second trialMonths later, in January 2024, a federal judge held a second trial to determine whether other things Trump had said about Carroll were defamatory. Its purpose was narrow. Since a jury had already found that Trump had sexually assaulted Carroll, the testimony was limited to how badly Carroll’s reputation had been damaged by his comments assailing her credibility and denying the alleged attack. This time, Trump attended the proceedings and testified for about three minutes.“She said something that I considered to be a false accusation,” he told the jury, later adding, “I just wanted to defend myself, my family and, frankly, the presidency.” Carroll testified that she faced a stream of death threats after Trump repeatedly attacked her story. The new jury sided with Carroll again, awarding her more than $83 million in damages.Appeals continueCarroll has yet to receive any of the money while Trump’s appeals of the two verdicts have moved through the courts.Ruling in one of those appeals, the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals also addressed the issue of whether Carroll had been honest about who was paying for her legal representation.Trump’s lawyers had accused Carroll of hiding the fact that her lawyers had received money from an organization backed by Reid Hoffman, the co-founder of LinkedIn. The judges ruled that there was no evidence to suggest that Carroll was involved in that funding arrangement or had purposely lied about it when she was asked during a deposition in 2020 whether anyone was paying her legal fees. “It showed that Ms. Carroll simply was not involved in the matter of who was or was not funding her litigation costs,” the appeals court said.A lawyer for Carroll declined to comment through a spokesperson on Thursday.__Associated Press reporter Eric Tucker and Alanna Durkin Richer in Washington contributed to this report.

Jordan James on Leicester ‘chaos’, Declan Rice and the challenge of facing PSG: ‘As soon as you lose that ball, they’re gone’
Jordan James is talking about the “chaos” of his last two seasons, playing under multiple different managers and through a points deduction with relegated Leicester City, when talk inevitably turns to what it’s like to face Paris Saint-Germain.If there’s a team that can subject you to even more chaos, it’s the defending European champions. James played against them for Rennes in 2024-25, and exhales as he remembers the sheer speed.“As soon as you lose that ball, they’re gone,” the midfielder says. “And it’s so hard to get bodies back into your own half because they’re so fast.“They’ve just got so many players that can do different things. Desire Doue was at Rennes before so I trained with him, and he’s unbelievable, as everyone knows.Jordan James trained alongside the 'unbelievable' Desire Doue at Rennes (Getty)“They just work off each other and, as soon as you give it to the front players, it’s so hard trying to block off the middle of the pitch and force them outside. You’re a man down because they’ve gone past you, with so many players that are willing to go at people and dribble.“Even goal kicks, they’re so aggressive. It’s so hard to try and beat that first.”James is talking now in the calmer setting of his family home in Hereford, enjoying a beautiful day, after a season on loan at Leicester that presented different challenges. The 21-year-old is widely seen as one of the players who gave a good individual account of himself in an otherwise nightmare season for the club.Jordan James gave a good account of himself for relegated Leicester (Getty)If it’s impossible to know which way someone like Khvicha Kvaratshkelia is going to turn, the uncertainty of a points deduction in a relegation battle is something else. The Leicester squad were constantly kept aware of proceedings, but that almost brought the converse challenge of having to “shut it out”. The season obviously carried an extra weight due to the 10-year anniversary of the sensational Premier League title win, but James says that was one more element that they had to see as noise outside.“We just had to sort of focus on what we’re able to control. We obviously knew what was going on, and the players started to get a little bit anxious, which is normal.“You have to try and shut it out but it’s hard. It’s going in the background, and everyone knows about it. At the end of the day, we’re paid to do a job, we’re the footballers and we’re the only ones that can affect it. No one else can. So that’s sort of the mindset we went with.”Leicester were relegated from the Championship after a points deduction (PA)It’s also the mindset that explains why James has attracted interest, and why he feels the season was individually good for him despite the challenges. There’s a tinge of sadness with that, given how James came to “love the club and the fans”.“I’ll forever be grateful for what they gave me. Obviously you build friendships and relationships with your teammates and you’re seeing them suffer because they’ve obviously got longer contracts and that.”Leicester’s relegation means James has returned to Rennes for the time being, with an injury forcing him out of Wales’ June international camp.Such discussion alone shows he has already experienced a lot for a mere 21-year-old. James has had nine different managers across three different seasons at three different clubs, none with especially stable environments, and that at the crucial development age of 19 to 21. It can be seen in how he’s gone from a goalscoring eight to a number-six and back again.Jordan James (right) has dealt with plenty of upheaval in his young career (Getty)Despite all of that, he now goes into matches “feeling I can affect them”.“How I feel at the moment is I’m good enough to sort of change games.”It was for such reasons, and the will to develop himself, that James opted to leave Birmingham City for Rennes in the summer of 2024.“For me, going abroad has always been something I wanted to do. I think there’s not many players that want to do it at the age I went. It sort of sets you aside.“And just for me to grow as a person. I was quite quiet before I went to Rennes. It helped me massively as a person, and also football-wise.”James’ eyes light up as he remembers the French crowds.“The flares. Just being able to deal with those hostile environments compared to England.”He was also struck by the difference in football cultures.“They’re really focused on the gym, which I wasn’t expecting - all athletes, and really powerful.Jordan James admits to a culture shock after moving to France (Getty)“In English football, it’s more possession-based, working your attacks, whereas over there it’s more counter-attacking and powerful movements.“You’re fighting a lot more and there’s a sense if you lose the ball, you’re going to get punished.”James admits he “struggled a bit mentally” just due to the change at such a young age, which resulted in the loan much closer to home in Leicester. “We’re quite a close family.” He could nevertheless feel the benefit of having greater confidence, and more personality. An adaptability can be seen in his midfield roles. On the subject of PSG and the Champions League final, he says he watches Declan Rice a lot, given how the Arsenal midfielder has also switched between six and eight.“I feel I’d never really known my position. I was light when I was young, so they put me in areas where I’ve always been good technically.“So I went to Rennes and I was sort of a six, but then I went to Leicester and got told by the manager he sees me as an eight.”Jordan James has modelled himself on Declan Rice (Getty)James credits former Leicester coach Marti Cifuentes as “the first manager who’s shown 100% trust” in him “no matter what, but his own physical growth also helped his range. He could “be a six in build-up” and then “get into higher areas” - like Rice.“Declan’s a perfect example. He’s been the best player in the Premier League this year. The way he picks up different areas at different times, it’s so good.“I’ve worked with so many different people with different strategies and ideas and I just use them all in different ways.”Wales have certainly felt the benefit. Although James could declare for England, he only ever felt Welsh.“Yeah, I don't think my dad would let me play for England.”Wales missed out on the World Cup after defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina in Cardiff (Getty)There’s also some regret in just missing the World Cup in losing that March play-off to Bosnia and Herzegovina, but he is optimistic about what next.“I felt we were good enough to get there, like in that Bosnia game. I came off injured in the 60th minute and I think we were 1-0 up. I hated knowing you can’t affect the game any more.“They were obviously hanging on a little bit and I couldn’t do anything about it. The only good thing is you get more chances. We know we have to obviously make tournaments.”Next up is a home Euro 2028. He still intends to immerse himself in the World Cup.“I love football so I'll be watching every game. I've got a little brother that loves it as well, so we'll be watching it together.”A bit of calm, after so much chaos.

Estêvão targeting ‘early August’ return from hamstring injury — report
LONDON, ENGLAND - MAY 19: Estevao of Chelsea celebrates at full-time following the team's victory in the Premier League match between Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge on May 19, 2026 in London, England. (Photo by Darren Walsh/Chelsea FC via Getty Images) | Chelsea FC via Getty Images Estêvão was back in London last week as Chelsea beat Spurs in our final home match of the season, taking part in the post-match lap of appreciation as well, but he’s now returned to Brazil once again to continue his rehab at Palmeiras for the hamstring injury that ruled him out from our last several games, as well as the World Cup.Chelsea have reportedly authorized this idea, and are continuing to monitor and oversee to some extent his rehab, though I still find this a rather curious arrangement — even if it’s supposedly being done this way to provide a familiar environment for the youngster as he deals with the disappointment of missing out on the World Cup.Then again, despite his summer calendar opening up, even more curious is the continuing preference for conservative treatment on the hamstring injury that was given the worst grade possible for hamstring injuries following initial assessment. Seems like a gamble with relatively limited reward yet massive downside. A more invasive, surgical approach would mean more time out now, but would in theory, reduce the chances of a recurrence and ensure better healing. And it’s not like the conservative treatment is expected to provide miracles. According to ESPN Brasil, Estêvão’s targeting only ‘early August’ for his return, by which time Chelsea will be just about done with preseason and ready to start the new Premier League campaign (first match is on the weekend of August 22). So the 19-year-old will miss the start of the season either way.

Rs 30 crore for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in IPL Auction? Batting legend's record-breaking bid for 15-year-old
NEW DELHI: The wonder boy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has stunned everyone with his hard-hitting skills. In the crucial Eliminator clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad, the 15-year-old Rajasthan Royals batting sensation smashed a 16-ball half-century in Mullanpur to power his team to a 47-run win and help them seal a place in Qualifier 2. Rajasthan Royals will now take on Gujarat Titans on Friday for a spot in the final of IPL 2026.A breathtaking knock of 97 runs off just 29 balls, studded with 12 sixes - that’s what Sooryavanshi produced against Sunrisers Hyderabad. The innings also saw him enter the history books by breaking Chris Gayle’s record for the most sixes in a single IPL season.Sooryavanshi came into the contest with 53 sixes, six short of Gayle’s tally of 59.What if Sooryavanshi enters the IPL auction pool?Reacting to Sooryavanshi’s carnage, former India cricketer Harbhajan Singh, who was on commentary duties, asked Virender Sehwag how much money he would pay if the teenager entered the auction.Without any hesitation, Sehwag, during the commentary, said he would pay Rs 30 crore, while former India batter Aakash Chopra was quick to respond that he would match the offer without thinking twice. Sooryavanshi was bought for Rs 1.10 core by RR in the IPL Auction. The 15-year-old has played 15 matches in IPL 2026 so far and scored 680 runs at an average of 45.33 and a breathtaking strike rate of 242.86, the highest in the ongoing tournament. He is also the Orange Cap holder.Former South Africa batter and IPL great AB de Villiers heaped praise on teenage sensation Sooryavanshi, stating that the opener’s game awareness at the age of just 15 is 'remarkable'.“What stood out most about Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s innings was his composure and clarity under pressure at just 15 years of age. Pat Cummins and Sunrisers Hyderabad kept trying different plans, constantly changing the field and mixing their lengths to disrupt his rhythm, but he stayed completely locked into his own bubble throughout the innings. That level of game awareness in a knockout match is remarkable for someone so young,” de Villiers told JioStar.“What’s most impressive about Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is the clarity he already has around his preparation and routines at just 15 years of age. Hearing him talk about visualising match-ups, studying bowlers, and mentally preparing before games shows a level of maturity that is very rare at that age,” he said. 131382622The former Royal Challengers Bengaluru star even compared Sooryavanshi’s approach to legendary Australian opener Matthew Hayden, known for his strong visualisation routines during his playing days.“It actually reminded me a little of Matthew Hayden, who used to spend time visualising on the pitch before batting. Over the course of his career, many of those routines will evolve, but the important thing is that Vaibhav is already building his own habits and processes instead of trying to copy others,” the Proteas great stated.

Crystal Palace targeting Middlesbrough’s Hayden Hackney
Crystal Palace targeting Middlesbrough’s Hayden HackneyCrystal Palace are looking to bolster the Conference League-winning squad this summer and have Hayden Hackney on their shortlist of potential additions.According to the Daily Mail, Palace are targeting the Middlesbrough man who can replace either Daichi Kamada or Adam Wharton in the centre of the park.Kamada will likely leave Selhurst Park when his contract expires in June, while Wharton is attracting transfer interest from around Europe.Hackney would be a fantastic pick-up for the Eagles, having established himself as one of the better midfielders in the Championship, where Palace have successfully shopped for gems. The 23-year-old bagged five goals and seven assists in 39 Championship outings this term, continuing his remarkable performances from last season. He was voted the EFL Championship Player of the Season and made the team of the season.Transfermarkt market value coordinator Ben Littlemore said, “He is a midfielder who offers everything.“He is a fantastic passer of the ball, can glide past players, and is a goal threat too.”Elsewhere, Palace are casting their net for Celta Vigo full-back Oscar Mingueza to provide competition for Daniel Munoz. He is a player of interest after his excellent campaign in La Liga, but securing his signature will be far from straightforward. The Spaniard is available on a free transfer and has attracted attention from several clubs across Europe.Palace will face fierce competition if they want to bring him to Selhurst Park.Newcastle United striker William Osula is another player admired by the Eagles. Unfortunately, that deal also looks complicated. The Premier League side is expected to demand a sizeable fee for the Denmark star after a very promising campaign.Palace may hesitate to commit such a large sum while balancing other priorities in the squad. Both players fit Palace’s recruitment model perfectly, but landing the pair will not be easy.

But my shit ain’t over. I still want to fight.”“My last few fights have been some shoddy decisions,” Griffin added. “It’s the name of the game, baby. I still got it…. Shoutout to God. Among his biggest victories were wins over Condit and Perry. The 40-year-old closes out his UFC career on a three-fight skid. He was submitted by Michael Chiesa, dropped a split decision to Chris Curtis, and most recently lost a unanimous decision to promotional newcomerVictor Valenzuela.Griffin exits the UFC with an 8-11 record and leaves behind a reputation as one of the division’s toughest veterans, having spent nearly 10 years competing against some of the Welterweight division’s bigger names. To checkout UFC’s upcoming schedule of events click here.

While he certainly enjoys a positive relationship with Diego Simeone, there is a feeling that a more attack-minded team would allow him to express himself more consistently in the final third. That belief has strengthened Barcelona’s confidence as they prepare to test Atletico Madrid’s resolve with their first official proposal.

'Bhole ka haath hai': Back in Tajpur, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi remains the kid who never forgives or forgets
TimesofIndia.com in Mullanpur: For the cricket world, what unfolded at Mullanpur during the IPL 2026 Eliminator between Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad felt magical. A 15-year-old dismantled an attack led by Pat Cummins without blinking twice. But 1,300 kilometres away in Tajpur, a small village 12km from Bihar’s Samastipur district, nobody was surprised. And Ravi Prakash Jha, who has been bowling to Vaibhav Sooryavanshi since the boy was five, was one of many. The villagers packed inside Sooryavanshi’s home, watching the prodigy do what they have seen him do for years: smash bowlers twice his age into submission. When Sooryavanshi fell short of a century, there was disappointment for barely a moment before the room collectively shrugged it off and said: “Koi baat nahi, agle match mein aa jayega” (It’s okay, he’ll get it in the next match).Once Sooryavanshi’s tornado-like innings ended after a 29-ball 97 blitz, there was hardly a single person in the stadium who was not left stunned. In the first 16 balls he faced, he smoked eight sixes. Even in book cricket, one can barely imagine hitting a six every two balls.“Ye book cricket 8 saal ki umar se khel raha hai (He has been playing this book cricket since he was eight),” said Jha with a laugh.Jha, now 22, has been bowling to Sooryavanshi since the wonderkid was five and he was 12. He shared a couple of anecdotes from the early days of long hours spent under the sun.“Very few people know that he was picked for Bihar’s U-19 team when he was eight. He was not selected because of his age.“In one of the U-12 matches at Patna’s Moinul Haq Stadium, he scored 153 runs. Out of the 15 sixes he hit, seven balls could not even be traced because they landed outside the ground,” he says.Jha continues: “Three weeks before he was picked in Bihar’s Ranji Trophy probables in 2022 as a 12-year-old, allegations were raised about his age. The BCCI called him to Bengaluru, where he had to undergo a bone test. (VVS) Laxman sir wanted to squash these speculations once and for all. He is only 15, and at such a young age, he has already gone through things that even a 30-year-old hasn’t.”“Sab temperament ka khel hai, aur Vaibhav par Bhole ka haath hai (Cricket is a game of temperament, and he has Lord Shiva’s blessings),” he says.On his YouTube channel, R Ashwin spoke in detail about how Sooryavanshi has worked on his game during the tournament itself. Be it Mohsin Khan, Prafull Hinge or Mohammed Siraj, all troubled him with sharp short balls aimed at the body. Mohsin even bowled a maiden over to him. Hinge dismissed him for a golden duck, while Siraj repeatedly beat him from the same length. What stood out, however, is how quickly Sooryavanshi made the minute adjustments. Within weeks, he worked on his game and started playing the upper cut against the bouncer with confidence. The second six off Pat Cummins in his second over was a perfect example.“If you remember his upper cut over third man for six, earlier in the season he was trying to play the same ball straight and was getting top edges. Within a season, he made such changes at the age of just 15. He is not a normal player,” Ashwin said.Prafull Hinge dismissed Sooryavanshi twice in three matches. But in the reverse fixture between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals, Sooryavanshi smashed four consecutive sixes off Hinge. In the Eliminator, before falling to Hinge, he had already plundered 28 runs in the over with three sixes and two boundaries.“Ek baar agar kisi ne out kar diya toh phir us bowler ki khair nahi. Ek din maine usse do baar out kar diya, uske baad itna maara ki hum sar pakad ke baith gaye. Ek pull shot aisa maara ki net phaad diya. (If someone manages to get him out once, that bowler is in trouble after that. One day, I dismissed him twice, and then he thrashed me so much that I was in disbelief. He played a pull shot with such force that he tore the practice net),” recalled Jha.On Friday, the battle between Siraj and Sooryavanshi will once again be one of the most fascinating contests to watch. In their previous meeting, before eventually getting out, the teenager had already struck Siraj for three exquisite boundaries. 131382842Now they are set to face each other again. Siraj will come armed with pace, hostility and plans. Sooryavanshi will walk in with fearless intent and a bat that currently seems incapable of staying quiet for too long. And somewhere in Tajpur, they will watch calmly, because for them, this is nothing new.

'Cousin Amir opened doors, now it's my time' - Abdul Khan
Abdul Khan (left) has won three of his 14 bouts by stoppage, having fought on the undercard of cousin Amir's final professional contest [Getty Images]Abdul Khan was in nappies when his cousin Amir won the nation's hearts and a silver medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics.By the time world champion Amir produced a career-defining performance against Marcos Maidana in 2010, Abdul was a seven-year-old watching wide-eyed in Bolton. On Saturday, featherweight Abdul faces journeyman Liam Fitzmaurice at Wembley in a watershed momentfor British South Asian boxing. The card is headlined by unbeaten light-welterweight Adam Azim and features prospects Mohammad Bilal Ali, Vijayraj Karia and Saqib Mehmood in the earlier bouts - meaning five south Asian fighters will share billing. "Seeing Amir reach the heights of the sport only lit the fire in probably the majority of the South Asian kids out there, including me," Abdul, 23, tells BBC Sport.Amir rose to prominence after winning silver in Athens aged 17 and went on to capture world titles at light-welterweight, becoming one of Britain's most high-profile boxers.Unbeaten in 14 professional fights with three knockouts, Abdul is the first to admit his surname helped carve his path. The family connection even led to him fighting on the undercard of Amir's final professional bout against Kell Brook. But after building his record on the small-hall scene and on international cards, the time has come to step out of the familial shade."Being known as his cousin was always going to be like that because of what Amir achieved," Abdul says. "I'm grateful for everything he has done to open the doors - but it is all right getting through the doors, it is how good you are to stay in those rooms."It's been my own hard work and dedication which has kept those doors open. This only gives me more of a push to just get out of the shadow. I think we're all our own people and I'd love to shrug off that tag of Amir's cousin."My team have always said to build me in the right way and to explode when the time comes - now it's my time. "He done so much for me but I don't want to latch onto anyone else's name, you only appreciate it more - and get appreciated - if you do it this way."'Boxing gave me a home'While his sporting lineage might suggest an easy path, Abdul's reality was far from privileged. When he was 10 years old, his parents separated. Growing up with his mother and two sisters, he carried a heavy responsibility at a young age."I'm the man of my house and I have been since I was 10," he says."It was hard because my father was never in my life, never gave me a penny or anything. Boxing gave me that escape from the world where I came and everything outside of the gym meant nothing."This is why I stuck at it. It gave me purpose, motivation, and more than anything, it gave me a home."Abdul won the national youth ABA title as an amateur before the Covid lockdown prompted him to turn professional early and "learn on the job."Though they didn't connect properly until Abdul was 13, Amir has been a consistent source of guidance since."He was always a phone call away," Abdul says. "Whatever advice I needed, he was always there. He always said to have the right people around you who really care for you, work hard every single day and commit 100%."Fighting in Pakistan and world-title dreamsAbdul Khan (right) made his professional debut in October 2021 [Getty Images]Trained by Alex Matvienko at Elite Boxing Gym in Bolton, Abdul - through Amir's connection - also had the chance to spar with future all-time great Terence Crawford."It was priceless," he says. "Sharing the ring with a pound-for-pound great. I felt all star-struck in there and surreal."He was probably only going for it at 20%, but I picked little things from him - distance, speed, reading the game."Abdul believes he can move towards a world title within the next two to three years. He also harbours a long-term dream of fighting in Pakistan, where he regularly visits family in a village near Rawalpindi."I love Pakistan, I love the culture," he says. "There's a lot of talent out there, they should invest a bit more into boxing like they have done with cricket."If I fought in a cricket stadium in Pakistan? It would sell out 10 times over."For now, though, the focus is Wembley Arena and a night that brings together a wave of British South Asian talent on one card.Abdul says: "I want all kids - not just South Asians - who have come from broken families to look at someone like me, knowing that you can have a goal, stick at it and you will get the fruits of your labour. With the right people around you, anything is possible."How to watch Azim v Claggett on BBC & what is the running order? You can watch all the undercard action from 18:30 BST before the main card begins at 20:30.From 20:00, you can also follow live text commentary on the BBC Sport website and app. From 18:30 on BBC iPlayer:Joel Kodua v Will Harrison (welterweight)Ergal Elezaj v Dan Garber (heavyweight)Saqib Mehmood v Simas Volosinas (lightweight)From 20:30 on BBC Two:Adam Azim v Steve Claggett (light-welterweight)Francesca Hennessy v Aurora de Persio (bantamweight)Boxing schedule and results 2026Watch every Born to Brawl episode More boxing from the BBC Notifications, social media and more with BBC Sport

‘The biggest problem I see…’ – Real Madrid icon raises major concern over Mourinho’s potential return
‘The biggest problem I see…’ – Real Madrid icon raises major concern over Mourinho’s potential returnThe possibility of Jose Mourinho returning to Real Madrid continues to generate debate, and one former player who knows both the club and the Portuguese manager well has now shared his concerns.Steve McManaman remains a respected figure among Real Madrid supporters thanks to his successful spell at the Santiago Bernabeu. As speculation surrounding Mourinho’s potential appointment grows, the former winger has questioned whether the timing is right for such a reunion.Mourinho’s return is believed to depend on Florentino Perez securing victory in the presidential elections on 7 June. While there is still an official process to go through, many around Real Madrid expect Perez to remain in charge, which would clear the way for the Portuguese coach’s arrival.McManaman has questioned Mourinho’s credentials. (Photo by Alex Broadway/Getty Images)However, McManaman believes the biggest issue is not Mourinho himself, but the profile of the current Real Madrid squad.McManaman questions Mourinho’s fitSpeaking about the situation, the former Real Madrid player pointed towards the club’s talented young core as a potential concern.Explaining his view, McManaman said, “The biggest problem I see lies in the quality of the players currently at Madrid.”He went on to describe the group’s emerging stars as “marvellous” and specifically highlighted that “Bellingham, Vinicius and Brahim Diaz need a special kind of management.”Mourinho is close to Real Madrid return. (Photo by Justin Setterfield/Getty Images)According to McManaman, these players are at a stage of their development where they require a different type of leadership and support to maximise their potential. He said that they “need calm, integration and moral support within the dressing room” to continue their growth at the highest level.More on the matterWhile he agrees that changes may be necessary after a disappointing campaign, he is not convinced Mourinho is the ideal figure to oversee that process.“Mourinho’s style is known for being extremely strict and confrontational. “At times, he tends to create media battles and pressures that these young players might not be able to handle at this age, which could lead to situations escalating rather than being resolved,” he added.Source: ESPN

Roma confident agreement can be found for Celik’s renewal
Roma confident agreement can be found for Celik’s renewalRoma’s transfer market is proceeding step by step: now is the time for contract renewals for those whose contracts are expiring and for transfers to be made by June 30th. Three players are seeking extensions: Dybala, Pellegrini, and Celik. The situation regarding the Turkish full-back is clear: the demands of his entourage are still high, but the Friekdins will try to accommodate Gian Piero Gasperini’s requests, who in this case is pushing for the former Lille player to remain in the capital.Celik is certain to play in the World Cup with Turkey, but his future is still up in the air. As Il Messaggero reports, negotiations for his contract renewal with Roma will resume in the coming days. The gap between asking price and offer is approximately €600,000, but optimism is filtering through, as Gasperini has repeatedly requested the Turkish full-back remain. The coach is aware that there will already be a lot of work to do on the flanks, given that Tsimikas will return to Liverpool and Angelino’s fitness will need to be assessed.

Alajbegovic to give final OK for Roma transfer in next days
Alajbegovic to give final OK for Roma transfer in next daysRoma is looking for wingers to boost their attacking strength for next season and meet Gasperini’s demands. These are the days of Kerim Alajbegovic, the Bosnian talent currently preparing for the World Cup with his national team. His father, who is also an agent, was in the capital a month ago with Pjanic, and after hearing the Giallorossi’s plan, he postponed his decision until the end of May. Now the Giallorossi club wants to decide immediately whether to make the move or change targets and focus on other players.Should the player accept the offer from the capital, negotiations between Roma and Bayer Leverkusen would begin immediately. The Giallorossi are ready to move before the World Cup to prevent a further increase in his value, which currently stands at around €25 million. As Corriere dello Sport reports, Roma expects a response from the 2007-born winger by the end of the week. The Bosnian winger could be just the first spark in the Giallorossi’s attacking revolution, a unit that won’t just be tweaked but completely rebuilt.

Frances Tiafoe rewards fan for returning racket after wild French Open celebrations
Frances Tiafoe has been reunited with his racket after losing track of his equipment in the celebrations that followed his French Open win over Hubert Hurkacz. The American prevailed in a five-set battle to reach the third round at Roland Garros, but later revealed that his racket had been taken in the subsequent celebratory melee. The 19th seed had offered a reward of two tickets to the individual who had taken his Yonex, and it appears the thief took Tiafoe up on the offer after the racket was returned to his coach.“I hugged him with my racket in my hand, and then I was, like, my arm is getting stuck,” Tiafoe explained of the moment it was pinched. “But my mind’s going a thousand miles an hour, so at the time I’m trying to chill out, give my respects to my opponent, give my respects to the ref.“And then you’re like, ‘Wait, hold on, what’s was going on?’ They were locking me in. I thought I was going to fall into the crowd at one point. But it was fun, it was a cool moment. But I actually need that racket.Tiafoe had suggested that he wouldn’t have been reunited with the item had he been playing in the United States, but “in Europe, they love tennis so much, I think I’m going to get it”.The 28-year-old will face Portuguese qualifier Jaime Faria in the third round with his section of the draw opening up after the shock exit of world No 1 and tournament favourite Jannik Sinner.Tiafoe reached the quarter-finals in Paris last year.

Clichy prepared for 'free-flowing' v 'conservative' final
[Getty Images]Former Arsenal defender Gael Clichy believes Paris St-Germain will be "fearing a team that is difficult to play against", as the Premier League winners prepare for their second Champions League final. However, he added both sides are "really scary in their own right" as PSG have scored 44 goals in the competition this season, while Arsenal have only conceded six goals across their 14 matches.Speaking before the Budapest final, Clichy said: "One team is playing free-flowing football and the other team is more conservative and set-piece orientated."As much as Paris St-Germain are a fantastic team, so are Arsenal. When you don't concede in so many games with this new formula in the Champions League, it tells you a lot about the character of the team."If you are looking for an example of being solid and difficult to beat, there is no better team than Arsenal."The reality is that people are fearing a team that is difficult to play against."I can see why people are saying the pressure is off Arsenal. I understand it but it is two different competitions, two different objectives and two different types of pressure."Clichy was an unused substitute when the Gunners were beaten 2-1 by Barcelona in their only previous Champions League final appearance back in 2006."We had great players and the team was unbelievable," he added. "Jens Lehmann was sent off early and I think the score would have been different with 11 men."But it just shows that anything can happen in 90 minutes, especially in a final."

Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.Don't look now, but the Philadelphia Phillies are suddenly playing like the postseason contender most expected them to be this year as they enter a playoff-caliber matchup with the Dodgers in Los Angeles. The Phillies were one of MLB's worst teams in April, losing 16 of 18 games at one point and firing manager Rob Thomson along the way. Interim skipper Don Mattingly has righted the ship, though. The Phils' pitching staff has been outstanding lately, allowing seven total runs in their last six games, while their offense has gradually started to figure things out. The Phillies just did the Dodgers a favor by sweeping the Padres in San Diego, capped by another scoreless outing from Cristopher Sanchez. Even better for L.A., that means the untouchable lefty won't be pitching at Dodger Stadium this weekend, but solving Zack Wheeler (4-0, 1.67 ERA) will be a tough enough task Friday. The Dodgers are in their usual spot atop the NL West and have won 12 of 14. They'll send Justin Wrobleski (6-2, 3.07 ERA) to the mound for the series opener and hope to keep it rolling as they come off a sweep of the Rockies. The full financial details of Anthony Gordon’s transfer to BarcelonaBarcelona’s signing of Anthony Gordon is one of the biggest deals of the summer, and the financial structure has now been revealed by SPORT.The Catalan club have reached an agreement with Newcastle United worth €80 million in guaranteed payments, while a further €10 million could be paid through performance-related bonuses. The overall package therefore has the potential to reach €90 million, making Gordon one of Barcelona’s most expensive signings in recent years.Importantly for Barcelona, the deal has been structured in a way that eases the immediate financial burden. This is because Newcastle have agreed to allow the fixed portion of the transfer fee to be paid in instalments over several years, giving the Blaugrana greater flexibility as they continue to manage their finances.Financial details of the moveThe bonus package has been divided into two separate sections, with the first €5 million linked directly to Gordon’s involvement on the pitch. Barcelona will pay a fixed €80 million for Gordon. (Photo by Stu Forster/Getty Images)Newcastle will receive €1 million for each season in which the winger participates in more than 60% of Barcelona’s matches, up to a maximum of €5 million. The remaining €5 million depends on collective success, as those payments will only be triggered if Gordon helps Barcelona win major trophies during his time at the club.Another significant aspect of the agreement is Newcastle’s insistence on securing a percentage of any future profit generated from a potential sale. The Premier League side viewed that clause as essential during negotiations and successfully included it in the final deal.Gordon’s salary and Everton’s gainGordon has signed a five-year contract and is set to receive a major salary increase following his move to Spain. Gordon will earn €7 million at Barcelona. (Photo by Stu Forster/Getty Images)The England international is expected to earn around €7 million net per season, effectively doubling the wages he received at Newcastle.Reports suggest Gordon’s salary package is significantly lower than the amount Marcus Rashford would have earned had his stay at the club been extended.Furthermore, there is also a financial benefit for Gordon’s former club, Everton. Thanks to a clause negotiated when Newcastle signed the winger, the Merseyside outfit will receive 15% of the fixed transfer fee. That translates into a payment of €12 million following Gordon’s switch to Barcelona.By securing a flexible payment plan, limiting performance bonuses to achievable objectives and avoiding a higher wage commitment elsewhere, Barcelona have managed to land one of their priority targets while maintaining greater control over their long-term finances.

The future of a key Manchester City defender seems far from certain
The future of a key Manchester City defender seems far from certainAlthough his 2025-26 season was heavily interrupted by injury, Josko Gvardiol looks to be a prominent player for the future for Manchester City. The Croatian international already is vital to his team, but as City enter a new era, Gvardiol figures to be the future of the City defence. Since arriving at the Etihad in the summer of 2023 from RB Leipzig, the Croatian international has established himself as a key player for the FA Cup and Carabao Cup holders. However, as important as Gvardiol is to City, his future isn’t immediately clear. A new report indicates that a host of top clubs from across Europe are interested in signing the elegant centre-back. Gvardiol’s future seems to be far from certain entering the summer transfer window.A host of big clubs are interested in signing Josko Gvardiol this summer.Saikat Chatterjee has provided an update for CaughtOffside on the potential of Josko Gvardiol leaving Manchester City this summer. As per Chatterjee’s report, negotiations between Gvardiol and City over a contract extension for the Croatian defender have stalled. It is also reported that Gvardiol’s agents have looked across Europe for potential destinations for him. It is reported that Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Inter Milan are monitoring the situation. As per Saikat Chatterjee’s report, Bayern Munich has the most interest in signing Gvardiol. Lastly, it is reported that a transfer fee of €75 million could be enough to sign the Croatian international.Manchester City will not one to lose a player who figures to be a key player in their new era.Josko Gvardiol is currently contracted with Manchester City until the end of the 2027-28 season. Therefore, City aren’t under any imminent pressure to sell the Croatian defender. Also, City are eager to sign Gvardiol to a contract extension, so it is hard to see City sanctioning the sale of the elegant defender. The only way a move could occur is if Gvardiol forces the issue. As of right now, that seems unlikely. Gvardiol will shortly begin preparations with Croatia for the World Cup and will not want any distractions.More importantly, Manchester City will not want to sell a player who is vital to their lineup and future. City will look to build their defence around Gvardiol and not restructure it without him. It is no surprise to learn that a host of top clubs have an interest in signing Josko Gvardiol. He is one of the premier defenders in European football. The issue seems to be that City are under no pressure to sell him right now. They do hold all the cards in this regard. That would seemingly make it difficult for any club to pry him away from the Etihad. For me, it is hard to see Josko Gvardiol leaving Manchester City this summer. He is too important to City’s future to be allowed to leave. However, if he hands in a transfer request, that could change the situation drastically. Whether or not that occurs remains to be seen at this stage. But if it were to occur, a host of top clubs in Europe seem poised to make their move.

OGC Nice defend Ali Abdi after his decision to join up with Tunisia squad
OGC Nice defend Ali Abdi after his decision to join up with Tunisia squadIt was touted as an issue as soon as the LFP announced that the relegation play-off between OGC Nice and AS Saint-Étienne would be moved in order to allow the former to play in the Coupe de France final against RC Lens. Moving the dates of the two-legged encounter (the first of which took place on Tuesday, with the second in Nice on Friday night) was problematic as it meant that it fell outside of FIFA dates. It meant that national teams were not obliged to allow their players to play in the game. Nice held talks with national teams, who are preparing for the FIFA World Cup, in order to agree on retaining their players for the games against Sainté.However, that did not work in the case of Ali Abdi, with Tunisia manager Sabri Lamouchi confirming that Nice tried – and failed – to retain the full-back. A day before the second leg of the Ligue 1 promotion/ relegation play-off, he was pictured in Tunisia.Ali Abdi has been criticised for his choice, which will see him miss out on Friday’s game in Nice. His club, in an official press release, have defended the defender’s actions. The club confirmed the failed talks with the Tunisian federation but highlighted how Ali Abdi was nonetheless present for the first leg against ASSE. They added that he was obliged to travel in order to undertake bureaucratic procedures pertaining to his participation in this summer’s World Cup. “Between defending the colours of his club and being able to honour his call-up for a World Cup with his national team, it was a particularly difficult decision on a human and sporting level,” read the communiqué.The club added, “In light of him being the victim of a wave of insults on social media, the club calls on everyone to be measured and respectful towards a player who, like his club, is the victim of these events.”GFFN | Luke Entwistle

Brian Mitchell liked what he saw from Commanders' rookie during OTAs
Brian Mitchell says he was not looking for what many want to see from a rookie.Mitchell on 106.7 The Fan's "BMitch and Finlay" on Thursday, discussed going to the first day of the Washington Commanders OTAs on Wednesday. Mitchell was good enough to play and last in the NFL for 14 seasons. He lasted that long because he grew his value to a team. Mitchell ran the ball well and could return kicks and punts. He could catch the ball out of the backfield. He didn't shy away from playing coverage teams either, racing down the field doing battle with blockers, looking to level a returner. Mitchell could block in pass protection and also on punt teams. Mitchell could even jump in and be an emergency quarterback, as he showed in a 1990 Monday Night loss at Philadelphia.Thursday, Mitchell educated his listeners, informing them that when you see a rookie at OTAs, you are not looking for a finished product. But you do want to see a player who moves well and has some skills."That's what you want in the first time seeing a player," Mitchell said. "It's not that you see a finished product. I think so many fans and a lot of people in the media (do this). They look for the finished product instead of, okay, I see why they drafted him." Mitchell then pointed to Jayden Daniels being drafted No. 2 overall, "and I think he gave you many reasons why," meaning early in OTAs.By analogy, my wife is an accomplished pianist. Recently, we attended a concert together, and one pianist stood out to us. Oh, how I loved when he played. He played with variety, with differing volume throughout the composition. He played with an authority; he played with soft control at times as well. However, my wife? Because of her experience, she heard MUCH more than I noticed. Therefore, she was much more vocal about what she noticed in the pianist. Similarly, Brian Mitchell, being such a gifted and versatile player who could do so many different tasks, recognizes skill when he sees it and appreciates it much more than your average fan or even media members, who simply don't possess the experiences or knowledge Mitchell does. Consequently, Mitchell got around to what he wanted to convey; he had liked what he saw on Wednesday in the Commanders' WR out of Clemson, the No. 71 overall pick, Antonio Williams."Antonio Williams yesterday? He gave you many reasons why. I could see why. You can see the quick twitch, you can see how the guy settles, or the route running. And if you continue with that, and keep building, then you see why. Then you start to see the person develop that we already look at now."Mitchell is calling out that he sees skills in Antonio Williams. Now, the work ethic will become a crucial factor to see if Williams is working hard to develop his craft. If he is and does, then Mitchell is saying other building blocks will begin appearing. This article originally appeared on Commanders Wire: Washington Commanders: Brian Mitchell liked what he observed in OTAs
