Tess Roman Just Short as MSU Women Fall in Lexington
Michigan State women carried the biggest share of the program’s NCAA First Round hopes Thursday in Lexington, Kentucky, and none of the Spartans who competed that day moved on to Eugene. The closest calls came in the field, where Tess Roman finished 14th in the javelin at 49.71 meters and Elle Adrian placed 17th in the hammer throw at 60.47 meters, both outside the top-12 cutoff for the NCAA Outdoor Championships. That made Thursday a tough swing day for the Spartans. Michigan State brought 18 entries to the East First Round in Lexington, and the Michigan State women’s side had a heavy share of the action with nationals spots on the line.Roman and Adrian were right in the mixRoman’s 14th-place finish stands out because the margin was so tight. With only 12 automatic qualifiers advancing from each event in Lexington, the Michigan State thrower finished two spots short of extending her season to Hayward Field.Adrian also stayed competitive in the hammer, landing 17th with a throw of 60.47 meters. Michigan State’s Thursday group was built around chances like those, and both throws put the Spartans close without getting over the line. The rest of Thursday’s resultsMichigan State also got a 42nd-place finish from Olivia Millen in the 1500 meters at 4:23.15, a 31st-place finish from Sydnee Sinn in the 800 meters at 2:05.80, and a 32nd-place finish from Rylan Finstrom in the shot put at 15.54 meters, per the official results from Thursday’s session.Michigan State’s meet preview had flagged Sophia Mettes as a top-10 regional seed in the pole vault and laid out how important the women’s dates would be in Lexington. The same preview set the path to nationals, with the East First Round running May 27-30 and qualifiers advancing to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene from June 10-13.Where MSU stands nowAs Thursday wrapped, Michigan State’s only confirmed national qualifiers were still the three men who advanced Wednesday: Xavier Griffiths in the hammer throw, plus Colby Morlock and Dillon Morlock in the shot put, as listed in the Spartans’ first-day recap. The next women to watch are Kate Stewart-Barnett and Sophia Lucki, who remained on the Saturday schedule after Thursday’s events. That leaves Michigan State waiting on the steeplechase to add to its Eugene group after a day when the Michigan State women had multiple chances and Roman came the closest to turning one into a nationals berth.

Paul Merson says Arsenal man is the best in the world right now
Paul Merson says Arsenal man is the best in the world right nowPaul Merson believes David Raya is the best goalkeeper in the world at present as the Spaniard prepares to help Arsenal compete in the Champions League.Raya has been in excellent form over recent seasons and has won the Premier League Golden Glove in each of the campaigns he has played for Arsenal. The Gunners believe they have signed potentially the best goalkeeper in their history, and he could break further records in the coming weeks. Raya will also aim to win the World Cup with Spain, although he is not currently the first-choice goalkeeper for his national team and is unlikely to be during the tournament. This situation reflects the competitive nature of international selection and the depth of goalkeeping options available to Spain.Merson assessment of Arsenal squadPSG also have a strong goalkeeper, but Merson is convinced Raya is currently the best in the world. He said via the Metro:‘Mikel Arteta has assembled a strong squad with signings who may have gone under the radar when they first joined, particularly players like Jurrien Timber, William Saliba, Gabriel, and Leandro Trossard.‘They chose to replace Aaron Ramsdale with David Raya, and he’s gone on to become the best goalkeeper in the world.’This assessment highlights the belief that Arsenal’s recruitment strategy has strengthened key areas, with Raya emerging as a decisive figure. It also underlines how recruitment decisions have shaped the team’s recent progress.Impact and upcoming challengesRaya could reinforce that reputation if he delivers a strong performance in the Champions League final, particularly against a PSG side with significant attacking quality. His displays will continue to be closely watched as Arsenal aim to secure major honours, with his consistency seen as vital to their success in recent seasons overall success._____________________________________________________________________________________________ADMIN COMMENTSo here are some simple rules which I must insist commenters follow….You agree not to give any personal abuse to other Arsenal fans. Juventus Deciding Which Cornerstone to Sacrifice
Juventus Deciding Which Cornerstone to SacrificeJuventus CEO Damien Comolli stated that they would likely need an unplanned sale to make up for the missing UEFA Champions League prize money and that Kenan Yildiz would stay, so they must decide which linchpin to dangle instead.According to Sky, the top options are Gleison Bremer, Khephren Thuram, and Andrea Cambiaso, considering their valuations and the interest they could generate. The fullback isn’t as valuable as when Manchester City tracked him, though.Per La Gazzetta dello Sport, Juventus are open to letting the Brazilian defender go, in particular, given his age and some of his recent remarks. He not-so-subtly urged the team to improve, as he wants to win. Bayern Munich have been pursuing him lately, and they can offer Kim Min-Jae in return, but only on loan.Bremer has a €54M release clause valid until August 10th. There’s little indication any team will activate it, but it sets his price tag.Our Take on JuventusThey’ll probably have to, but a competent management would be able to achieve the same goal by cashing in well on their several misfits or less important players. Thuram didn’t finish the well because of a lingering injury, but he should be a keeper and has untapped potential, especially if the rest of the team is working. Cambiaso has been in a funk for a couple of seasons at this point, but he has a unique skillset, and there’s hope he’ll bounce back eventually. Bremer hasn’t been superb since his ACL tear, and they already need a quality center-back as is. He’s the most logical candidate, but they are still in a pickle. Plus, his departure is unlikely to fetch enough to sign two strong replacements.

Gay candidate calls out “homophobic” AI-generated pics in flyers
West Hollywood councilmember John Erickson and several LGBTQ+ advocacy organizations are condemning recent attack ads targeting his campaign for a California state Senate seat. In a joint statement, Equality California, Los Angeles County LGBTQ+ Elected Officials, the LGBTQ+ Victory Fund, and Honor Pac said the flyers, which, according to the Los Angeles Blade, were mailed to voters, rely on “imagery and stereotypes that evoke harmful anti-LGBTQ+ tropes.” Related Gay dad punches right-wing commentator after being tricked into a homophobic interview “Whether intentional or inadvertent, these tactics cause real harm and contribute to a broader climate in which LGBTQ+ people are increasingly being targeted and attacked across the country for who they are,” the statement reads. But Erikson says the trips were for official business and were unanimously approved by the city council in public meetings. The flyer | Keep California Golden Another flyer | Keep California Golden In 2023, in his capacity as West Hollywood Mayor Pro Tempore, Erickson traveled to Rome to meet with the late Pope Francis as part of a program fostering civic and community engagement through sports. According to his campaign website, which cites the City of West Hollywood’s public records, his 2024 trip to Paris for the Olympics, along with other LA County elected officials, was “to learn first-hand about security logistics” during the games ahead of the 2028 Olympics. As the Blade reported last year, West Hollywood has allocated $1 million to build Pride House LA/WeHo, an LGBTQ+ hospitality house for the 2028 Summer Games. “Given the rising violence against the LGBTQ+ community, John’s participation in [the 2024 Paris] trip was essential to better understand what his city could do to protect LGBTQ+ athletes during the ’28 Olympics here,” Erickson’s campaign site states. The flyers, Erickson, who is currently running for California’s District 24 Senate seat, told the Blade, are “distorting the facts.” “They’re doing it because they’re afraid of what I actually am going to offer,” he said. In a video posted to Instagram this week, Erickson said that “Big Tobacco and powerful special interests are spending millions of dollars to deceive” voters with the “outlandishly false and homophobic attack mailers.” View this post on Instagram A post shared by John Erickson (@johnericksonwh) The flyers were paid for by Keep California Golden, which bills itself on its website as *a coalition of “industry associations, labor unions, and businesses.” It lists the California Association of Realtors, the California Correctional Peace Officers Association, and the California Building Industry Association as its top funders, and notes that it is “not authorized by a candidate or a committee controlled by a candidate,” but includes no other information about the group. “Billionaires are spending money against a candidate whom they are deeply afraid of,” Erickson told the Blade. “I’m out there calling to tax the billionaires and the corporations to pay their fair share to fund education, health care, social services… and they’re afraid of me, because I’m also supported and endorsed by the California Federation of Labor.” In their statement, Equality California, Los Angeles County LGBTQ+ Elected Officials, the LGBTQ+ Victory Fund, and Honor Pac noted that the attack flyers “feel especially harmful” in District 24, “which has among the most LGBTQ+ voters in California.” The organizations demanded “that all candidates and committees in this and other races throughout California carefully review these materials and take meaningful steps to ensure future communications reflect the values of dignity, inclusion, and respect.” “More people need to be aware of how this impacts other LGBTQ+ elected officials or who might want to consider running for office,” Erickson said. “Those are the things that I’m most concerned about, because an attack on me as an out LGBTQ+ elected official is an attack on everyone.” Subscribe to the LGBTQ Nation newsletter and be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Knicks' Mitchell Robinson reportedly has surgery on fractured finger, hopes to play in Finals
New York Knicks reserve big man Mitchell Robinson has already had surgery on his fractured little finger on his right hand, according to multiple reports, and he hopes to be able to play through it with a brace on his hand in Game 1 of the NBA Finals.Robinson fractured his finger sometime after the Knicks swept the Cavaliers out of the playoffs — there still has been no official word on how this happened — and had surgery earlier this week, something first reported by ESPN's Shams Charania and since confirmed by others.Robinson is pushing to play in Game 1 of the Finals, which is Wednesday in either Oklahoma City or San Antonio (Game 7 between those teams is Saturday). That would be a radically fast turnaround. Usually when a player has surgery to repair a broken pinky finger, they are out for a month, according to Jeff Stotts’s injury database at In Street Clothes. That said, the Knicks don't rely on Robinson for shooting or his handles, if he can deal with the pain and not make the injury worse, the things he can do on the court are still valuable.Going up against the size and physicality of either West team, New York could really use Robinson. He brings physicality and rim protection on defense, plus he is a high-level offensive rebounder — he averaged 4.2 offensive rebounds a game during the regular season (fourth in the league). In that role, he was critical to the Knicks' NBA Cup Finals win over the Spurs back in December. While Robinson has a long history of injuries, this season was among his healthiest, and he played in 60 games (his most since the 2019-20 season). Robinson has averaged 5.3 points and 5.5 rebounds per game off the bench in these playoffs, although his minutes dropped against Cleveland as the Cavs adopted a hack-a-Mitch strategy to get him off the court.

Mike Breen reveals Kevin Harlan offered him Knicks-Pacers conference finals call on TNT
Credit: Kirby Lee-Imagn Images (both)A few days before the 2025 Eastern Conference Finals, Kevin Harlan called Mike Breen and offered to give him the series.Breen told Dexter Henry of the New York Post that Harlan, who had been assigned Knicks-Pacers on TNT, wanted him to have it instead. ESPN had drawn the Western Conference Finals that year, which meant Breen was headed to Oklahoma City and Minnesota while New York — the team he had called in some capacity for over three deacdes — was playing for a Finals berth on another network.“You’ve been waiting almost three decades,” Breen recalled Harlan telling him. “I want you to call the games for TNT. I’m gonna go to my bosses, I’m gonna tell them that you should do it, and I’ll go do the West for ESPN.”Mike Breen tells @DHenryTV how much it meant to him that Kevin Harlan actually offered to let him call the Knicks-Pacers Eastern Conference Finals on TNT last season.Full conversation –> https://t.co/fkcDCEjNqYpic.twitter.com/5Cm6Mts1Wg— New York Post Sports (@nypostsports) May 29, 2026Harlan had already figured out what would happen if ESPN didn’t want him in exchange. Whether they used Dave Pasch or Mark Jones, he said, he was fine with it. He was willing to sit out the conference finals if it meant Breen got New York.He told Breen to think it over and called back the next day. Both men arrived at the same conclusion — that going through with it wasn’t the right thing for their employers — but the offer had already done what it was going to do. Harlan called Knicks-Pacers on TNT, a series everyone in the building understood was in its final playoff assignment, and Breen called Thunder-Wolves on ESPN.“This was not some gratuitous ‘Oh, let me throw this offer out there,'” Breen said. “He wanted to do that for a friend. I was so touched by the fact that he thought that way. But, again, that’s the man he is.”Harlan has never called an NBA Finals, and at 65, with a reduced schedule at Prime Video this past season, he almost certainly never will. The Finals have stayed with ESPN since 2006, and Breen has called 20 (soon to be 21) consecutive championship series as a result, while Harlan spent those years doing some of the best play-by-play work in the sport on TNT and watching the Finals from the other side of the rights split every June. The series he was giving away last spring — which served as the last playoff assignment for TNT’s NBA coverage — was about as good as his postseason got. And his instinct, in that moment, was to hand it to Breen.Breen does eventually get his Knicks in a Finals, just not the one Harlan tried to arrange. He’ll call New York’s first Finals appearance in 27 years, starting June 3 on ABC, alongside Richard Jefferson and Tim Legler. On The Zach Lowe Show last week, Harlan said he has never really felt like he missed the Finals because Breen has been such a central voice for their whole generation of announcers, that he has lived through it in Breen’s eyes and voice and friendship, and feels like he’s right there with him every June.Harlan will watch him do it again in just a few days, which, it turns out, is more or less exactly what he told Breen he was prepared to do a year ago.The post Mike Breen reveals Kevin Harlan offered him Knicks-Pacers conference finals call on TNT appeared first on Awful Announcing.

8 standout moments from Leon Goretzka in a Bayern jersey
8 standout moments from Leon Goretzka in a Bayern jerseyDanke, Leon! After eight years and 312 appearances in an FC Bayern jersey, Leon Goretzka is bidding farewell to Munich. The 31-year-old midfielder can look back on a successful spell with the German record champions, which reached its peak with the 2020 Champions League triumph and concluded with the double win in 2026. To mark his departure, fcbayern.com looks back at eight special moments from our number eight. On Matchday 2 of the 2018/19 season, when FC Bayern were away to VfB Stuttgart, the Bayern coach at the time, Niko Kovač put new signing Goretzka in the starting XI for the first time. On the pitch, the former Bochum and Schalke player repaid his coach’s faith straight away – and how! In the 37th minute, he put the German record champions ahead with a curling shot into the bottom-right corner; in the 62nd minute, he set up Robert Lewandowski’s goal to double the lead. In the end, Bayern headed home to Munich with a 3-0 victory under their belts – and Goretzka as Man of the Match.During the 2019/20 season, Goretzka scored what was arguably his finest goal in an FC Bayern jersey – and against his former club, of all teams. His strike to make it 3-0 in the 5-0 home win against Schalke 04 treated the crowd at the Allianz Arena to a masterclass in skill. Five minutes after the break, Joshua Kimmich swung in a corner towards the far post, where Goretzka’s header was initially blocked. The ball rebounded back to the midfielder, who didn’t hesitate. He launched himself into a scissors kick and found the bottom left corner – leaving goalkeeper Markus Schubert with no chance. It was one of a total of 51 goals Goretzka scored in eight seasons at FCB.Seven Bundesliga titles, three DFB Cup trophies, three DFL Supercup wins, one Champions League trophy, one UEFA Super Cup and one Club World Cup: Leon Goretzka does have quite a few trophies in his collection. He was part of the team that won no less than six trophies in 2020 – a feat previously achieved only by Barcelona (in 2009). The midfielder’s greatest achievement in that record-breaking year was the Champions League triumph in Lisbon. In the final against Paris Saint-Germain (1-0), Goretzka and his teammates ascended to the throne of European football. During the 'final-eight' tournament in the Portuguese capital, the Bochum-born player started every match, making a vital contribution to the team’s journey to lifting the rophy. As the newly crowned Champions League winners, Bayern faced Europa League winners Sevilla in the UEFA Super Cup. Coach Hansi Flick’s treble-winning side fought out a close encounter with the Andalusians at the Puskás Aréna in Budapest, with the Munich side eventually securing a 2–1 victory in extra time. The celebrated hero was veteran Javi Martínez, who scored the winner with a header in the 104th minute. Goretzka had already laid the foundations for the win during normal time. In the 34th minute, Robert Lewandowski played a pass to the 1.89-metre-tall midfielder in the box, and he struck the ball into the net with the inside of his boot, bringing the German record champions back into the game after they'd gone behind to a goal from Sevilla’s Ocampos. It was one of Goretzka’s most important goals for FCB.Six games, six wins, 18 goals scored and just two conceded: Bayern impressed the whole of Europe during the 2021/22 season with their triumphant run through the Champions League group stage. A 4-2 away win at Viktoria Plzeň saw the Munich side secure their place in the round of 16 as early as Matchday 4. They owed this largely to match winner Goretzka. In the 10th minute, our number eight played a fine one-two with Sadio Mané in the opposition’s penalty area, with Mané scoring to put us ahead; Goretzka then converted a cross from Thomas Müller in the 25th minute to make it 3-0. The midfielder also scored the Munich men's fourth goal himself, chipping the ball over the goalkeeper after a superb pass from Leroy Sané. “I’m delighted to have scored two goals,” said the midfielder after the game.Goretzka won’t forget a certain afternoon in Cologne either. Up until the 71st minute, the Bayern player watched the game against 1. FC Köln on the final day of the 2022/23 season (2-1) from the bench, before coming on as a substitute for Ryan Gravenberch. As the Munich men conceded an equaliser ten minutes from time, but needed a win to secure the title, coach Thomas Tuchel made a double substitution up front – and Goretzka had to leave the pitch again after around 15 minutes. Forward Mathys Tel came on in his place, and Jamal Musiala was also brought on for the final minutes. Thanks to his winning goal in the dying seconds, FCB were able to celebrate their 11th consecutive league title. Goretzka, who had made a significant contribution to this success in 27 appearances, lifted the trophy for the fifth time.In the 8-1 home thrashing of 1. FSV Mainz 05 in the 2023/24 season, the whole Bayern side shone, but one player in particular did really stand out: Goretzka, who contributed two goals and two assists. In a sold-out Allianz Arena, he scored from a rebound and with a header, and also delivered two pinpoint crosses from the midfield, which Harry Kane and Serge Gnabry converted into goals. Goretzka played a total of 15 (!) passes into the final third that afternoon, with a pass completion rate of 93 per cent. The Germany international had a day to remember and once again demonstrated his quality.Goretzka was able to celebrate yet another exceptionally successful season to cap off his eight years at FC Bayern. Although the Munich side narrowly missed out on the European crown after being knocked out of the Champions League in the semi-finals by Paris Saint-Germain, Goretzka did mark his departure with the domestic double of league title and DFB Cup. During his final home game at the Allianz Arena, the midfielder was also accorded a special honour. The Bayern fans in the Südkurve bid him farewell with a banner reading “Bochum boy in red and white – Thank you for eight years, Leon!” and presented him with a scarf. “The special moment for me was when I stood in front of the Südkurve, spoke to the fans and they gave me a little gift. That simply showed me that I was, and still am, part of the family here. I’m just proud of that,” said Goretzka.Dieser Inhalt kann hier leider nicht dargestellt werden. War and displacement in Gaza are fueling a rise in early marriage
(AP Illustration / Peter Hamlin)2026-05-29T10:03:47Z DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — Majda was destitute. Her husband and eldest son had been killed by Israeli airstrikes. Living in a ragged tent in Gaza with rats and the stench of sewage, she couldn’t support her children and feared her daughters would be harassed going to the communal latrine in a camp with hundreds of strangers. So she made a decision she now deeply regrets. She married off her 13- and 14-year-old daughters to men who promised safety and support.“I thought I was protecting them,” she said. “Fear was slaughtering me.” The devastation that Israel’s campaign has wreaked in Gaza has helped fuel an increase in marriages of young girls, according to experts and official data. With almost the entire population driven from their homes, most living in squalid camps and dependent on aid, some parents have sought some financial stability for their teen daughters by giving them away in marriage. For the girls, it meant a loss of their childhood and future — and, often, dangerous pregnancies. For Majda’s daughters, it meant horrific physical abuse. Child marriage was declining before the war Before the war, child marriage had been slowly declining in Gaza, according to the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics. In 2022, the last tally released by the bureau, 17.8% of marriages involved a girl under the age of 18, down from more than 22% in 2015.The minimum legal age for marriage in Gaza is 17, with some exceptions allowed; the U.N. and most humanitarian groups categorize marriages of girls under 18 as early marriage. The number of marriage contracts recorded by the court dropped 35% in 2024, the first full year after Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023, attack triggered the war. The AP spoke to six girls in Gaza who got married between 13 and 16 and their parents, all on condition they not be identified by their full names because of the deep sensitivity of the issue. The AP does not identify rape victims. Majda agreed to be identified by only her first name. All of the parents said that if not for the war, they would have never resorted to marrying off their daughters so young. One mother is paralyzed by griefAfter her husband and son were killed in separate strikes in April 2024, Majda descended into severe depression. She begged the doctors for sedatives, which kept her asleep for days at a time. She couldn’t care for her girls in their patched-up tent by the sea, battered by wind, cold and rain in the winter. Charity kitchens, on which they depended for food, were scarce and irregular.“I was entirely shaken from the inside,” Majda said. Two brothers in their 20s, from a family that had been their neighbors in Gaza City before they were all forced to flee, asked to marry her daughters. I am still not in my right mind,” Majda said. “I don’t know how I agreed to this.”Majda’s eldest daughter, who was 14 at the time, didn’t want to accept. “I felt lost,” the daughter said. “I thought if I got married, someone would be financially responsible for me … I truly regretted it.” Marriage is seen as a way to ease the family burdenMost of the girls who spoke to the AP said they were not coerced by their parents to marry. But they felt a duty to ease the burden on their families. By marrying, they were counted with their husbands as a separate family to receive aid from relief groups, rather than being under their parents’ allotment. Several girls also said that since schools largely shut down during the war, they saw no hope of continuing their education. One girl said she and her parents and seven brothers and sisters were displaced more than 25 times during the war. Her father had been totally against early marriage and wanted her to enroll in university. But the family was so desperate that he agreed to a suitor. She was 16.“I couldn’t forgive myself for taking a share of the little food my family had,” she said. She also worried that she and her siblings would be left without support if her parents were killed in an airstrike. Now 17, she was five months pregnant when she spoke to the AP.Another girl also cited her family’s multiple displacements, each draining the little money they had. When they were sheltering at a hospital in Khan Younis, a 25-year-old man staying there asked to marry her. Then 17, she said she agreed. “Marriage felt like the only sense of normalcy I could restore to my life,” she said. The law in Gaza allows exceptions to the minimum age of 17 with parental consent and authorization by a judge. The Supreme Shariah Court has rules for court officials not to approve exceptions below the age of 14 years and seven months. But parents sometimes enter informal agreements without officially registering the marriage. Two mothers who spoke to the AP did so, one of them after an official refused because her daughter was 14.In the Israeli-occupied West Bank, the Palestinian Authority in 2019 set the minimum age at 18, and early marriages have plunged since to around 5%, according to official statistics.Siyam said that at times of widespread displacement in conflicts with Israel, some Palestinians have seen marriage as a way to bring stability for their daughters. “Wars and conflicts lead to a return to more conservative traditions,” she said.Younger girls who marry are more vulnerable to rape and violence, including abuse from in-laws as they load household chores on them, Siyam said. Because divorce rates in early marriages are high, “the girl ends up returning home with one or two children.”Some girls were abused and fledMajda said the in-laws broke their promise and soon demanded her elder daughter be brought to her 23-year-old husband, who was living in his family’s tents in Deir al-Balah. For the first 10 days, the girl screamed whenever her husband approached her. “I kept screaming and he hit me,” the elder daughter said.Eventually, his mother “tied up my hands above my head,” the daughter said. The husband then raped her. After that, he repeatedly threatened to bring his mother to tie her up if she screamed, she said. She recounted repeated instances of rape and said on one occasion, she had to be taken to the hospital with bleeding.A few months later, the family came to take her 13-year-old sister to join her 21-year-old husband. She “kept screaming that she did not want to get married,” Majda recalled. The younger sister told the AP that she too was tied up by her mother-in-law and raped by her husband. She said she had two miscarriages, both after her husband kicked her while she was pregnant.Majda’s elder daughter gave birth to a son. Months later, in November, she fled, carrying her son for 15 kilometers (9 miles) to her mother’s tent. Not long after that, the younger sister also fled back to Majda. They then discovered that she was pregnant.Girls experienced high-risk pregnanciesThe maternity ward of Awda Hospital in central Gaza saw an increase in the rate of teenage pregnancies during the war, said the ward’s head, Yasser Shaaban. Many suffered severe health complications from getting pregnant so young, he said.On top of that, the vast majority were malnourished, as Israeli restrictions on aid drove Gaza’s population to the brink of famine at times.Four of the girls who spoke to the AP had given birth, and all described dangerous pregnancies or births. Three had at least one miscarriage. One of them almost died during childbirth from severe bleeding, her mother said. She was 16 and severely malnourished at the time.“I was unconscious for many days (after birth), and I couldn’t hold my daughter for a while,” the girl said. The family faced another painful choice Back with their mother, Majda’s daughters were terrified at any talk of going back to their husbands. Speaking to the AP in April, her youngest said returning would be akin to “death.”Majda said her younger daughter had always been a talkative, playful girl. But since her marriage, “she does not talk to anyone, not to her husband and not to me,” she said. The girls had returned to school, but the elder said she felt excluded and ashamed because she was the only student who was married with a baby. She described herself as a child mothering a child.“I am tired,” she said. “I want to die.” Majda was coming under heavy pressure from her father and her in-laws, who said she couldn’t afford to care for her daughters, the grandson and the baby on the way.Women can divorce their husbands in Gaza, but the process is expensive and complicated. Divorce also carries stigma, mainly for women, and would make it difficult for the girls to ever remarry. The in-laws assured Majda that her daughters would be treated well.Feeling she had no choice, she relented. The girls returned to their husbands, now in Gaza City, in early May. Majda hasn’t been able to contact her daughters since then.“They did not want to return,” she said. “They were crying.”___Ezzidin reported from Cairo.

Fantasy Football Roundtable: Here are our biggest offseason risers going into the 2026 NFL season
We’re into the slow portion of the NFL offseason but we can now start looking ahead to training camp, preseason and eventually fantasy football drafts. There’s always plenty of movement during the offseason with new faces in new places. Yahoo analysts Justin Boone, Joel Smyth, Matt Harmon and Scott Pianowski give you their biggest riser for fantasy going into 2026. Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2026 NFL seasonDavid Montgomery, RB, TexansEntering the offseason, Montgomery was a fading fantasy asset stuck behind superstar Jahmyr Gibbs in Detroit. While he remained a flex option thanks to his visits to the end zone, Montgomery’s touches declined each year with the Lions. Fortunately, a trade in early March kickstarted his fantasy outlook as the new lead back for the Texans. There’s very little competition for work on Houston’s depth chart, with backup Woody Marks best deployed in a pass-catching role. Being a starter is nothing new for Montgomery. Prior to the last two seasons, the veteran handled at least 235 touches or more in his first five campaigns, including being a bell-cow for the Bears. Now, as he prepares to turn 29 in June, Montgomery has a chance to produce fantasy RB2 numbers once again — with the potential for even more. Remember, Joe Mixon finished as the RB5 overall in 2024 while racking up 1,325 scrimmage yards and 12 touchdowns as a member of the Texans. — Justin BooneBhayshul Tuten, RB, JaguarsSmoke never became fire for Bhayshul Tuten in 2025, but the signs continue to be there for the young running back. After a year with several flashes, a mid-season injury and the second-best success rate in the NFL, Tuten finds himself in prime position in comparison to the end of 2025. Yes, the Jaguars signed Chris Rodríguez Jr. in the offseason, they had to add an RB, and it could’ve been much worse for Tuten’s fantasy stock. Play 2026 Soccer Pick 'Em with FOX One and make your picks for the world's biggest soccer tournamentJacksonville chose to let their former first-round RB Travis Etienne Jr. walk in free agency, followed by squashing any draft rumors with zero running backs taken out of 10 selections. Rodríguez brings a true threat to the backfield, but the positive far outweighs the negative. First off, in three seasons, Rodríguez has seven career targets… It should be Tuten’s role (one that Etienne maintained in 2025) with an offensive playcaller that has averaged the most RB screens since taking over in 2024. The danger of Rodríguez sharing a short-yardage or goal-line role is real, but it is not due to the lack of success Tuten had last season as one of the most reliable in that area. He isn’t a shoe-in fantasy stud, but running backs on good offenses, with high potential volume, going late in drafts, immediately makes him a candidate for an ADP crushing pick. — Joel SmythJosh Downs, WR, ColtsJosh Downs is easily one of the biggest risers from this offseason. One year ago, the Colts’ wide receiver group was crowded with Downs in the slot, Alec Pierce established as the X, Michael Pittman Jr. as the high-volume Z and AD Mitchell as quality depth as the WR4. Now, Mitchell is long gone and Pittman was traded this offseason, as well. The room is much lighter now behind Pierce following a breakout season and Downs. It sounds like the team is ready to give Downs a look as the starting Z in addition to his slot duties, which gives him a path to playing in two-receiver sets. That proved to be a significant roadblock last year as the Colts played more heavy personnel after drafting Tyler Warren at tight end. Downs even looks like he bulked up a bit to be able to handle more snaps. He’s an awesome talent and one of my favorite separators in the league. This is the year he’s finally projecting into a consistent and high-volume role. Easy buy right now. — Matt HarmonLadd McConkey, WR, ChargersNothing has changed with Ladd McConkey in recent weeks, I've just become more excited about what he can do in a Mike McDaniel offense. Thusly, McConkey is rising on my board. The Chargers had a complicated passing game last year, and their true offensive intentions were submarined by cluster injuries on the offensive line. Give them better pass blocking, a more condensed passing tree and McConkey in his third season — I'm all in. McConkey showed star quality in the second half of 2024 and it can return this fall. I'll draft him proactively. — Scott Pianowski

Players call for sponsorship boards removal after injury
Turkey's Zeynep Sonmez could not continue after the incident in only the third game of her French Open doubles match [Getty Images]Britain's Katie Boulter has led calls for the French Open to remove on-court sponsorship boards after Turkey's Zeynep Sonmez said tripping over one left her needing stitches.Sonmez had to retire from her doubles match on Friday after colliding with one of the foot-high signs while chasing a ball. The 24-year-old said was left with a bruised knee after the incident and needed two stitches."Do we really have to wait until a player is seriously injured before these courtside boards are removed?" Sonmez wrote on social media."Player safety must come first."Boulter escaped injury in a similar incident during her singles match on Thursday, but said the advertisement blocks are an unnecessary hazard."These things have to go," Boulter wrote. "[I] got lucky last night but next time I might not be."Four-time French Open champion Iga Swiatek and Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk, who said she does not chase some balls due to fear of injury, also said the boards should be removed. The French Tennis Federation (FFT) has been contacted for comment. Is more Grand Slam woe for Brits a worry for Wimbledon? How boards, covers and line judges have become obstaclesSonmez is not the first player to be injured because of the tight space behind the Roland Garros baselines. The Paris heatwave has produced firmer, bouncier courts, meaning players want to stand further behind the baseline to receive serve. Belgium's Alexander Blockx was forced to withdraw from the men's singles earlier this week after spraining his right ankle when he landed on a tarpaulin rain cover at the Jean Bouin practice facility, a short walk from Roland Garros.Blockx said on social media he "heard a snap" in his ankle and sarcastically blamed the "really necessary" covers. The world number 37 later edited his post to remove the reference to the covers. As well as sponsorship boards and covers, there has also been another obstacle on Roland Garros' smaller outdoor courts - line judges. The French Open is the only major tournament that still has line judges. Both ATP and WTA Tours use electronic line calling and Argentina's Juan Manuel Cerundolo says it is "very tough" for the players to adjust to.Cerundolo beat Britain's Jacob Fearnley on a smaller court, where line judges had to nimbly move out of his way, before knocking out top seed Jannik Sinner on Court Philippe Chatrier."It is weird to play with line judges - especially on the shorter courts," Cerundolo told BBC Sport."I played all my life with line judges but now over the last year we played without them so it is very different."You have to be ready to not hit them and say 'please go back and move to the side'. You have to adapt again."Juan Manuel Cerundolo avoids sponsorship blocks, rain covers and line judges during his match against Britain's Jacob Fearnley on court eight [BBC Sport]Live scores, results and order of playGet tennis news sent straight to your phone

Caitlin Clark record shows why Cari Champion criticism misses bigger Fever point
Photo by Harry How/Getty ImagesCaitlin Clark keeps producing historic numbers, even when the discussion around her becomes louder than the basketball. The Indiana Fever guard has become the fastest player in WNBA history to reach 500 career assists, reaching the mark in just 59 games. That should have been the clean headline after Indiana’s 90-88 defeat to the Golden State Valkyries. Instead, Clark’s record arrived alongside another debate about how she is treated by officials and the league.Caitlin Clark record should not be buried by referee debatePhoto by Edgardo Medina/NurPhoto via Getty ImagesClark’s achievement is not a small statistical note. It puts her well ahead of Sue Bird and Sabrina Ionescu, who needed 82 and 84 games respectively to reach 500 assists. That comparison matters because Bird is one of the defining guards in WNBA history, while Ionescu has become one of the league’s modern playmaking standards.Clark finished with 16 points, six assists and four rebounds against Golden State. The Fever still lost, and that matters, because her record did not cover every flaw in Indiana’s performance. But the wider point remains clear. Clark is already bending the WNBA record book in her second season, and that should not be reduced to a dispute over whistles.ari Champion’s criticism has to be framed carefullyCari Champion has criticised Clark over perceived entitlement, and also accused officials of blatant favouritism towards the Fever star.Champion is entitled to question consistency. Clark’s profile is enormous, and every exchange with a referee is now examined more closely than it would be for most players.Yet that does not make favouritism an established fact. It makes it a serious accusation that needs to be separated from what Clark has actually done on the court.Clark can be scrutinised like any other star. But becoming the fastest player to 500 assists is not noise, and it should not become a footnote to another argument about officiating.Read more:Dallas Wings star Jessica Shepard owns WNBA stat nobody else can match this seasonBecky Hammon ready to pay fine after dropping a furious rant about Las Vegas Aces’ poor whistleWNBA expert drops eye-opening Caitlin Clark-Stephen Curry reality check about Fever star’s gravity

Dabo Swinney’s ‘mind blowing stat,’ Clemson coach a clear all-time great
There’s no shortage of impressive numbers tied to Dabo Swinney’s Clemson tenure, but one in particular is drawing national attention heading into the 2026 season.CBS Sports recently published a list of the most eye-catching stats entering the new college football year, and Swinney made the cut in the “coaching greatness” category. The stat: no active coach has appeared in more national championship games than Swinney, who has made four. It’s another reminder of how dominant Clemson’s run under Swinney was at its peak. Over the last two decades, he has built one of the sport’s strongest résumés while taking the Tigers to heights the program had never reached before.“Swinney’s run at Clemson will never be forgotten, even as the NIL and transfer portal era has leveled the playing field a bit in recent years,” CBS Sports’ Brad Crawford wrote. “At one point in Clemson’s climb, the Tigers won 12 or more games for five consecutive seasons and finished inside the top four of the final rankings every year from 2015 through the 2020 campaign. Both of Swinney’s national championships came against Saban and Alabama. It was a stretch that rivaled the ACC’s best ever, previously displayed by Bobby Bowden at Florida State from 1992 to 2000.”The résumé behind that stat is impressive.Entering the 2026 season, Swinney has 187 career wins, two national championships and nine ACC titles. He is Clemson’s all-time winningest coach, the winningest coach in ACC history and the only coach in program history to win multiple national championships.Clemson also reached the College Football Playoff seven times under Swinney, including six straight appearances from 2015-20. Along the way, the Tigers won eight ACC titles in an 11-year span and became a fixture in the national title conversation.Former Clemson QB Cade Klubnik garners perfect scores at Jets OTAs📸 Ken Ruinard, Gannett-USA TODAY NETWORK https://t.co/cNsL0aQxKxpic.twitter.com/0FTmvid8Oy— Clemson Wire (@Clemson_Wire) May 29, 2026Swinney and Georgia’s Kirby Smart are the only active head coaches with multiple national championships. After a disappointing 7-6 season in 2025, Clemson now turns its attention to 2026, opening the year Sept. 5 at LSU in one of college football’s marquee Week 1 matchups.Contact us @Clemson_Wire on X, and like our page on Facebook for ongoing coverage of Clemson Tigers news and notes, plus opinions. This article originally appeared on Clemson Wire: Dabo Swinney’s remarkable stat is a reminder of Clemson’s historic run

5 most overrated NFL players in 2026, including Caleb Williams and Travis Kelce
Reputation is sticky in the NFL. A couple of big seasons, a fat contract, or a famous name can keep a player propped up long after the tape stops backing it up. Hype lingers. Production moves on. That gap is where the overrated label lives. The players below are not scrubs. Most have made Pro Bowls and cashed real checks. The issue is the distance between how they get discussed and what they actually deliver heading into 2026. Here are five names the conversation has gotten ahead of.MORE: Steelers former first-round pick has uncertain futureCaleb Williams, QB, Chicago BearsJan 18, 2026; Chicago, IL, USA; Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams (18) throws a pass during warmups before an NFC Divisional Round game against the Los Angeles Rams at Soldier Field. Mandatory Credit: David Banks-Imagn ImagesThe MVP buzz is arriving well ahead of the play. Williams set a franchise record with 3,942 passing yards and a 27-to-7 touchdown-to-interception ratio while leading Chicago to an NFC North title and a wild-card win.Look closer, though. His completion rate dropped to 58.1 percent, the worst for any quarterback to reach the postseason since Andrew Luck in 2012. He also paced the NFL in passing yards and touchdowns to wide-open targets, feeding the argument that Ben Johnson’s scheme is carrying the offense more than the quarterback is.Johnson set a 70 percent completion goal that Williams whiffed on, then made accuracy a daily project this spring. “We need to get the completion percentage up,” Johnson said.Travis Kelce, TE, Kansas City ChiefsKelce is still discussed as the standard at the position. Maybe a few years ago, that was the case. The 2025 numbers place him in the middle of the pack.He caught 76 passes for 851 yards and five touchdowns, a third straight season short of 1,000 after the run of seven in a row ended in 2022. PFF graded him 14th among tight ends as a receiver. At 36, the burst that once made him a weekly mismatch now shows up in flashes rather than every series.Kansas City rewarded the resume anyway, re-signing him for more than $54 million over three years after he had considered retirement. The Hall of Fame case is on lock. The week-to-week impact looks closer to a complementary piece than a centerpiece.DK Metcalf, WR, Pittsburgh SteelersDec 21, 2025; Detroit, Michigan, USA; Detroit Lions cornerback Rock Ya-Sin (23) tackles Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf (4) during the fourth quarter at Ford Field. Mandatory Credit: Lon Horwedel-Imagn ImagesMetcalf still gets talked about like a No. 1 receiver who bends a defense around him. The production no longer backs it up.Pittsburgh traded draft capital for him, handed him a five-year deal worth $150 million, then shipped out George Pickens to clear his runway. The return was a career-low 850 receiving yards, a sub-60 percent catch rate, and one touchdown after Week 8. A two-game suspension late nearly cost the Steelers a playoff spot. Some of the dip traces to a thin receiver room and a run-first plan with Aaron Rodgers throwing it. But Metcalf has fallen short of his billing for several seasons running now.At 27, the physical gifts are still loud. The results have gone quiet.Trey Hendrickson, EDGE, Baltimore RavensBaltimore made Hendrickson the prize of free agency, handing him a four-year deal worth up to $112 million. The pass-rush résumé earns the check. The rest of the profile invites questions. He is one of the best in the NFL at a single job, with back-to-back 17.5-sack seasons in 2023 and 2024. He is also a liability against the run, grading 90th among edge defenders there last year. Former teammate Andrew Whitworth put it bluntly, saying, “You can run the football right at him all the time, anytime you want.”Now 31, Hendrickson is coming off a seven-game, four-sack season cut short by core muscle surgery, and Jesse Minter’s scheme rarely loads the box to cover for it.Davante Adams, WR, Los Angeles RamsNov 23, 2025; Inglewood, California, USA; A pass intended for Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Davante Adams (17) falls incomplete against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during the third quarter at SoFi Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Jayne Kamin-Oncea-Imagn ImagesAdams led the NFL with 14 touchdowns in 2025, which keeps him filed among the premier receivers. The rest of the line argues for caution. He caught just 53 percent of his targets, a career low, and his 789 yards were his fewest since 2015. Much of his value rode on a 7.7 percent touchdown rate, a figure that rarely holds from one season to the next. Now 33, Adams plays second fiddle to Puka Nacua and missed time with a lower-body injury. Los Angeles is leaning into a three-TE look that thins his snaps, and the team shopped him before deciding to keep him.— Enjoy free coverage of the top news & trending stories on The Big Lead —

Becky Hammon colorfully vents about free-throw disparity after Aces' defeat to Wings: 'Give me my fine'
The Dallas Wings scored 50 second-half points on Thursday, erasing an eight-point halftime deficit and seizing a 95-87 victory over the defending WNBA champion Las Vegas Aces.Las Vegas head coach Becky Hammon wasn’t happy about her team’s defensive performance in Arlington, Texas — explaining that the Aces got off bodies, were late on actions and lacked the necessary physicality — but she also took issue with how the game was officiated.“Most of the time, we like to play out of our defense, which we weren't playing in. So that hurts us,” Hammon said, when asked about the lulls Las Vegas experienced on the offensive end in the second half as well. Then Hammon pivoted, ending her news conference with a expletive-filled message about the game’s free-throw disparity: “A'ja Wilson shoots one free throw. Chennedy Carter, zero, Jackie Young, zero," Hammon said. "I'm f***ing tired of that bulls***. I'm not saying they didn't earn their 22 (free throws) down there. But when Awak Kuier shoots more free throws than A'ja Wilson and Jackie Young and Chennedy Carter all combined, that's a problem."We're not getting the same whistle. Give me my fine.”Kuier, a Dallas forward who played 21 minutes off the bench, made all four of the shots she attempted at the charity stripe. As Hammon alluded to, Wilson, Young and Carter attempted just one free throw between the three of them. That belonged to Wilson, who went 10 of 24 from the field and clocked out with 21 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists. She got up at least six free throws in each of her previous five outings. As a team, the Aces shot a mere 12 free throws on Thursday, 10 fewer than the Wings. So far this season, Las Vegas is tied for last in the WNBA with 18.3 free-throw attempts per game.Hammon’s aired out similar grievances before. Last year during the postseason, she was one of the coaches fined for calling out the league’s officiating. Notably, Hammon backed longtime Minnesota Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve after Reeve was ejected from Game 3 of the Lynx’s semifinals series against the Phoenix Mercury for berating an official and then suspended for Game 4 due to her postgame tirade about the W’s refs. But, again, Hammon didn’t just have a bone to pick with the officials on Thursday. It was clear she was upset with her group’s effort defensively.Wings forward Jessica Shepard collected her second triple-double of the season, this time starring with 22 points, 20 rebounds and 10 assists. This year’s No. 1 overall pick, Dallas guard Azzi Fudd, made her first career start and also poured in 22 points, doing so on 9-of-15 shooting. The Wings (5-3) have won four of their past five games. On the other hand, the Aces (4-3) have dropped back-to-back contests and currently rank fourth-to-last in the W in points per game allowed (88.6). Plus, the Aces are 10th out of the league’s 15 teams in defensive rating (106.9).Hammon, who has led Las Vegas to three WNBA titles since taking over the reins in 2022, bluntly said the Aces’ defense “sucked” against the Wings.“Until we want to play defense for 40 minutes, we'll just continue to take these lumps on the chin,” Hammon said.

Astros $95 million pitcher tabbed by MLB insider as 'realistic' trade candidate
Astros $95 million pitcher tabbed by MLB insider as 'realistic' trade candidate originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Houston Astros are struggling this season, and sitting at 26-32, they're very much in play to become trade deadline sellers later this August. In such a scenario, there is bound to be plenty of interest in the Astros players. Yordan Alvarez will draw interest, but Houston is not likely to trade him. The same cannot be said for a couple of other players.MLB insider for Fansided.com, Robert Murray, tabbed one Astros pitcher making $95 million as a realistic trade candidate this season. That pitcher is 32-year-old closer Josh Hader.Astros' Josh Hader is a realistic trade candidate"Hader feels like a realistic trade candidate provided he's healthy," Murray writes. "... Perhaps the biggest obstacle toward a trade will be his five-year, $95 million contract through 2028. If the Astros are willing to eat some of it, many contending teams will surely be in the mix for the 32-year-old."Hader is currently recovering from a biceps injury, which has kept him out for a long time, dating back to last season. He's almost back, and he should return before the trade deadline at the start of August. The left-handed reliever is under contract through the 2028 season on his five-year, $95 million contract. It's a huge deal for a reliever, and the Astros likely would have to eat some of the contract to get back a worthwhile return in a trade.MORE: Ex-MLB GM projects White Sox to sell at trade deadline despite 2026 successBut, with how expensive he is, it would make sense to trade him for a solid return this season. There will be plenty of teams needing more reliever help, and Hader might be the best one available this season. He has a 2.05 ERA in 48 appearances last season, and is a five-time All-Star who has a 2.64 ERA in 468 games in his MLB career with 227 saves.Hader will draw trade interest, and Murray believes he's a realistic candidate to be traded this season. It might be a bit more complicated than some other trades, but the Astros sending away their veteran closer this season is very much in the realm of possibility.More MLB news:5 reasons to believe in Jordan Walker's breakout for CardinalsRoman Anthony might’ve been overhyped for Red SoxDodgers still have a Roki Sasaki problemChase Burns becomes first Reds pitcher with elite stat line since 1922Yankees’ Aaron Judge on track to become first player in MLB history with five 50+ homer seasons

Knicks avoid NBA Finals’ catastrophe with likely return of key center
Knicks avoid NBA Finals’ catastrophe with likely return of key center originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The New York Knicks are patiently awaiting their final opponent of the 2026 NBA Playoffs, after they swept the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference Finals. It will either be the San Antonio Spurs or the Oklahoma City Thunder, who are now dead even heading into Game 7. The recent Spurs victory in Game 6 puts the Knicks in a better position than they were yesterday, with the injury update on center Mitchell Robinson. According to Shams Charania of ESPN, the big man could be ready to go for Game 1, after all. This is huge news for the Knicks, no matter who makes it to the NBA Finals for the Western Conference. Both Spurs center Victor Wembenyama and OKC's Chet Holmgren are in the top tier of NBA centers, and both will be problematic for the Knicks. But with the return of Robinson, that eases the pain slightly, as he is having a monster playoff run. Robinson has really taken a step forward in these playoffs, as he continues to be a solid contributor at the "5". As he has continued to excel off the bench, he has been as great defensively as any Knicks player and has helped on the offensive end by grabbing big rebounds on both ends of the floor. That is why he is going to be so crucial, because both Wembanyama and Holmgren are going to be points of emphasis for either team to make the Finals. Especially if Robinson is out there with a brace on his hand, that is an easy weakness to exploit. Still, it is better to have him out there with a brace than to be down a man in the biggest series of the season. It has all come down to this, and the Knicks need everyone to give their all. Astros likely to trade either $60M Gold Glove slugger or All-Star infielder at deadline
Astros likely to trade either $60M Gold Glove slugger or All-Star infielder at deadline originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. With how the season is trending, the Houston Astros are very likely to wind up as trade deadline sellers this August. It's a shame considering how good this roster had a chance at being. But, with the injuries and the 26-32 record, the team is very much in play to be sellers this year. And if they are sellers, MLB insider Robert Murray of Fansided.com believes that they will likely trade one of two sluggers, either sending away their $60 million Gold Glove award winner or their two-time All-Star infielder.Astros likely to trade one of two infield trade targets"Christian Walker/Isaac Paredes. I'm combining the two here because if the Astros sell, at least one of them feels likely to go. And the case for both to be on the block is strong," Murray writes.Isaac Paredes is a two-time All-Star who's been moved around a lot in his career already. He was traded by the Tampa Bay Rays to the Chicago Cubs, and then dealt by the Cubs to the Astros in the Kyle Tucker trade. He's been a solid player for the Astros and is under club control through the 2027 season. This season, he is hitting .241 with a .713 OPS and 102 OPS+.He isn't hitting as well as he did last season, with his .809 OPS and 124 OPS+, but he's still a plus hitter and would be a nice third baseman option for a lot of teams.MORE: Ex-MLB GM projects White Sox to sell at trade deadline despite 2026 successWalker is a bit different, as he's also under control through 2027, but is on a three-year, $60 million deal that will have a team spending a lot to keep him on the roster for the rest of 2026 and into 2027.But, Walker, the three-time Gold Glove award-winner, has a .255 batting average this season with 15 homers and an .850 OPS and 137 OPS+.He's been a great hitter this season, and with high-quality defense as well, there is sure to be interest in Walker, even with his $60 million contract.Murray believes it's likely one of these two is traded this season, assuming the Astros are sellers. It also wouldn't be a surprise if the Astros traded both, especially if things get a lot worse from here on out.More MLB news:5 reasons to believe in Jordan Walker's breakout for CardinalsRoman Anthony might’ve been overhyped for Red SoxDodgers still have a Roki Sasaki problemChase Burns becomes first Reds pitcher with elite stat line since 1922Yankees’ Aaron Judge on track to become first player in MLB history with five 50+ homer seasons

Ben Johnson explains why D'Andre Swift is 'vital' to Bears offense
The Chicago Bears had a top-five offense in Ben Johnson's first year as head coach, and it played a key role in the team's success going from worst to first with an 11-6 record, winning the NFC North and defeating the Green Bay Packers in the wild-card playoffs. While quarterback Caleb Williams and his array of weapons, including Colston Loveland, Rome Odunze and Luther Burden III, garnered plenty of attention, the run game also played an important role in the offense's success. Chicago had a top-three rushing attack with the 1-2 punch of D'Andre Swift and rookie Kyle Monangai, where Swift had a resurgence with a 1,000-yard season after being reunited with Johnson. When discussing Swift's role on offense last season, Johnson admitted that he could get the running back involved a little more in the passing game. But he also explained why Swift is "vital" to how the offense operates."We certainly could target him more in the passing game, but there’s probably a number of guys I could say that for as well," Johnson said. "But he’s a dynamic player. I've known that about him since he came into the league, firsthand up there in Detroit, and certainly last year I wasn’t surprised about the year he had. So, is he capable of more? Absolutely. He absolutely is. And he's a vital part of what we do here."The Bears have a lot of moving parts on offense, and a lot of mouths to feed with the ball. And while there's been an emphasis on the passing attack with Williams and his cast of weapons, the run game will always remain crucial to the success of a Ben Johnson offense. After a resurgent season in 2025, the best might be yet to come for Swift in Chicago.Follow Bears Wire on Twitter, Facebook and InstagramThis article originally appeared on Bears Wire: Bears RB D'Andre Swift is 'vital' to offense, says Ben Johnson

Three crucial things UNC must do to get back to College World Series
North Carolina begins its quest to return to the College World Series on Thursday after falling just short last season in a win-or-go-home game against Arizona in the Chapel Hill Super Regional. The Diamond Heels are the No. 5 national seed and will have home-field advantage through the regional and super regional rounds. But their regional is tough, with perennial powerhouse Tennessee, an experienced ECU squad and a VCU team considered to be the best No. 4 seed in any regional. On top of that, it is paired with the College Station Regional, which includes one of college baseball’s most consistent programs in No. 12 national seed Texas A&M and a USC team that might be the best No. 2 seed in the field at 43-15.As always, it will not be a cakewalk for the Tar Heels. Here are three things UNC can do to get back to Omaha.Starting Pitching Has to Step UpWhile UNC’s bats were good enough to advance to the ACC Tournament championship final, its starting rotation struggled in Charlotte. Jason DeCaro, Ryan Lynch and Folger Boaz combined for 10 innings, allowing 12 earned runs, 22 hits and seven walks. Virginia Tech’s potent offense exposed some depth concerns for a deep postseason run. While he did show some vulnerability in Charlotte, DeCaro has been lights out all year. Lynch has been solid but has moments where he loses himself, while Boaz has been inconsistent throughout the season, resulting in a 7.30 ERA.That’s not a good sign going into a regional where you that might be considered the “regional of death”.Limit Bullpen ArmsLimiting bullpen arms will be critical for every team competing in the 16 regionals, and North Carolina is no exception. With the potential to play as many as four games over the weekend, the Tar Heels need to avoid overworking their relievers early and protect their best arms for high-leverage situations.Right-handers Caden Glauber and Matthew Matthijs have been rock solid out of the bullpen, giving North Carolina two trusted options late in games. If the Tar Heels can get quality outings from their starters and minimize unnecessary pitching changes, they can keep Glauber, Matthijs and the rest of the bullpen fresh and maximize their impact as the regional wears on.Take Advantage of the Opportunities Given to YouNorth Carolina’s lineup has shown all season it does not need many chances to change a game. When opponents have opened the door with walks, hit batters or errors, UNC’s bats have made them pay, stacking quality at-bats and applying pressure from top to bottom of the order. In the ACC Tournament and beyond, North Carolina’s offense has even carried the day when the pitching staff has not met its own standard. But this is postseason baseball, where you are going against the best of the best. Every mistake is magnified, and the ability to seize momentum becomes critical. If the Tar Heels keep cashing in on the opportunities they are given — whether it is a pitcher falling behind in the count, a leadoff walk, runners in scoring position or bases-loaded opportunities — it could be the difference between going to Omaha or staying home and watching eight other teams play at Charles Schwab Field.Follow us @TarHeelsWire on X and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of North Carolina Tar Heels news, notes and opinions. This article originally appeared on Tar Heels Wire: UNC Baseball: What the Tar Heels must do to advance to the CWS

Rafael Nadal Says He Was Playing His Whole Career with ‘Limitation’ After 2005 Foot Injury

After 2005, due to my injury on my foot, I was playing all my career with limitation, with a chronic injury."Nadal said the injury "really affected" his whole body and that he believes it's "the origin of all my problems in my body."Rafael Nadal at the 2024 French Open in Paris on May 25, 2024Credit: Clive Brunskill/Getty"Because of that, I had to stay over-positive, over-determinated, always ready to try to find a solution to keep being competitive, to try to find a way always to be on the court again," Nadal continued, noting that he's gone through "a long process of injuries" in his career."But I think I was ready to accept that moment, to tolerate the frustration and to keep working with hope and passion," he said.Nadal went on to say that "passion" was the "key" to his success: "For me, the key was, the suffering was less than my passion and my happiness for what I was doing."Nadal broke his left foot in 2005 during the Madrid Open and was later diagnosed with a rare degenerative condition called Mueller-Weiss syndrome, per the BBC. He then went on to win 22 Grand Slam singles titles before his retirement in 2024.Nadal also told the BBC, "Tennis became a race against time," as he dealt with injuries during his career. "Always having the doubt in my head of, 'How long can I last with this foot?' I never knew how long my career would last. I always thought, 'Maybe it's the last year, so there's no time to stop.' "At one point, Nadal began using an insole to support the foot, but that led to other problems, including tendinitis in his knee, he told the outlet."My knee was destroyed. The tendon basically had a hole in it," Nadal said, adding, "Having to play with an insole throughout my entire career threw the rest of my body out of whack."Nadal is the subject of a new Netflix documentary, RAFA, streaming now. According to the series' description, the four episodes will "chronicle the final chapter of Nadal's career, exploring his sacrifices, battles with chronic injuries, and his emotional retirement."Read the original article on People

Dan Campbell provides updates on the Detroit Lions' injured stars
The Detroit Lions are in no rush to get injured starters Kerby Joseph, Brian Branch and Sam LaPorta back on the field.Lions coach Dan Campbell said Friday, May 29, he does need to see Joseph, Branch or LaPorta take part in organized team activities or mandatory minicamp this spring, and would rather they focus on their rehabs."That's not the priority," Campbell said at team headquarters in Allen Park before the Lions' third practice of OTAs. "And it's not worth all that anyway."Joseph missed the final 11 games of last season with a degenerative condition in his knee, while Branch (torn Achilles) and LaPorta (back) are returning from season-ending surgeries.Branch tore the Achilles tendon in his right leg late in a December win over the Dallas Cowboys and is not expected to be ready for the start of training camp in late July.DAVE BIRKETT: Lions open OTAs and Blake Miller is among 7 to watchLaPorta suffered a herniated disc in his back in November. LaPorta has taken part in "some walk-through [and] jog-through" portions of practice this spring, but is not expected to be a full participant in practice until training camp.Campbell said none of the three players would take part in Friday's voluntary OTA, the first one open to reporters."The most important thing is continue to let them improve, rehab, all that," he said. "That'll take precedence right now. So they're in meetings, they’re getting the mental side of this. Just take it day to day."Campbell said Lions cornerback Terrion Arnold, who's returning from season-ending shoulder surgery, is among other players the Lions are taking things slowly with this spring with a focus on having them healthy for the 2026 regular season."We'll have a couple of these rookies that probably won't do very much, and that's more precautionary," Campbell said. "Some of the rookies, it's the same way every year. They train for the combine or for all of those drills, they don't train for football. So we just got our hands on them for, I guess, going on week three, something like that. So we just want to be smart with these guys, make sure they're ready to get on the field to do, even though it's not a lot, to be able to do that. We don't want any setbacks."Dave Birkett covers the Lions for the Detroit Free Press. Contact him at dbirkett@freepress.com.
