England brace for Croatia reunion in World Cup Group L
Harry Kane (centre) will lead England in their quest to win a first major tournament since 1966 (Gints Ivuskans)Thomas Tuchel is not shy about stating England's ambition to win the World Cup, with his team strongly fancied to progress from Group L, which includes old foes Croatia. The 1966 winners, among the favourites to go all the way at the tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada, will also face Panama and Ghana in the first round.Former Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea boss Tuchel was appointed in October 2024 to get England over the line after a string of near misses at major tournaments under Gareth Southgate. The German has largely kept faith with players who helped the Three Lions qualify in style with a perfect record of eight wins out of eight and not a single goal conceded. The England boss has shown his teeth by leaving out a clutch of star names including Phil Foden and Cole Palmer, stating his wish to create a "brotherhood" in his 26-man squad.England have a number of superstar players who would push for a place in any international side including Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice. But there are also weaknesses, including a lack of tournament experience in defence and an over-reliance on record goalscorer Kane.England came agonisingly close to ending their decades-long trophy drought under Southgate, being beaten twice in the final of the European Championship. They lost to Croatia in the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup in Russia and suffered defeat to France in the quarter-finals four years later in Qatar.England's main challengers in Group L are likely to be Croatia, whom they face in the group opener in Arlington, Texas, on June 17.Croatia has a population of under four million people but the nation's football team, ranked 11th in the world, consistently punch above their weight. The team finished third on their World Cup debut in 1998, were beaten finalists 20 years later in Russia and again secured third place in Qatar.Zlatko Dalic's men were unbeaten in qualifying for the 2026 tournament, winning seven matches and drawing one, and will be expected to progress to the knockout stages alongside England. The two teams have met three times since the 2018 World Cup, with two wins for England and one draw.- Modric magic -Veteran midfielder Luka Modric remains Croatia's captain and talisman at the age of 40, as he nears 200 international caps. The 2018 Ballon d'Or winner, who now plays for AC Milan, suffered a cheekbone fracture in late April but is expected to be fit.Another veteran of past campaigns, 37-year-old PSV Eindhoven winger Ivan Perisic, is also in the squad alongside Manchester City pair Josko Gvardiol and Mateo Kovacic.Ghana, ranked 74th in the world, reached the World Cup quarter-finals in 2010 but exited at the group stage in 2014 and 2022.The Black Stars are managed by experienced former Portugal and Iran coach Carlos Queiroz and can boast the firepower of Manchester City winger Antoine Semenyo, though Tottenham forward Mohammed Kudus misses out through injury.Panama, 33rd in the FIFA rankings, lost all three of their matches in their single World Cup appearance to date in 2018, including a 6-1 hammering by England.Forward Jose Fajardo and winger Jose Luis Rodriguez were the team's joint top scorers during the qualifying campaign while striker Cecilio Waterman is another key figure.jw/gj

DR Congo end 52-year World Cup absence amid health, security crises
French coach Sebastien Desabre has been in charge of the Democratic Republic of Congo national team since 2022 (SEBASTIEN BOZON)Democratic Republic of Congo will return to the World Cup in June after a 52-year absence as the vast central Africa nation reels from health and security crises. A deadly Ebola outbreak in the east of the country had recorded 10 confirmed and 223 suspected deaths by May 24. The Geneva-based World Health Organisation (WHO) has warned that the true spread of the epidemic, thought to have circulated under the radar for some time, is likely much wider.WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus from Ethiopia is heading to DR Congo, pledging to do "everything in my power" to conquer the outbreak. Fortunately, none of the 26 stars chosen to represent DR Congo at the four-yearly global showpiece in the United States, Canada and Mexico, play in the affected areas.French coach Sebastien Desabre selected 24 players from 11 European countries, one with a club in the United Arab Emirates and one with Egyptian outfit Pyramids. As the Ebola epidemic spreads and scientists race to develop a vaccine to combat it, fighting between government troops and the Rwanda-backed M23 militia has been raging. The mineral-rich east of the country has been scarred by violence from various armed groups for more than three decades. From 2021, the M23 has seized swathes of territory and fighting has stepped up since the beginning of last year. The national football team, known as the Leopards, are training in Europe ahead of Group K showdowns with Cristiano Ronaldo-inspired Portugal, Colombia and Uzbekistan.Having survived a marathon 13-match qualifying programme from Mauritania to Mexico, Desabre and his squad want to erase memories of 1974 in then West Germany. Then called Zaire, the first sub-Saharan qualifiers for the World Cup suffered a humiliating 9-0 hiding from Yugoslavia, equalling the record for the widest losing margin in the tournament. The reigning African champions were also beaten by Scotland and Brazil and headed home without scoring a goal. Against Brazil, defender Mwepu Ilunga achieved notoriety for abandoning his place in the defensive wall, rushing forward and kicking downfield a ball placed for a Brazil free-kick.- Bizarre protest -He later said his action was a bizarre protest against the government of President Mobutu Sese Seko for not paying promised bonuses. A similar act during the 2026 World Cup is unlikely as Desabre has consistently praised the "humility and discipline" of the current squad. The 49-year-old French coach took charge of the talented but underachieving Leopards in 2022 and patiently developed a strong national team.Senegal are widely considered the most powerful team currently in Africa, but they were held at home by DR Congo in 2026 World Cup qualifying. The teams drew again when they clashed at the group stage of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco. After finishing fourth at the previous AFCON in the Ivory Coast, the Congolese made a last-16 exit from the 2025 tournament, falling to a late thunderbolt goal from Algerian Adil Boulbina."I did not view it as regression after what we achieved in the Ivory Coast. We took many positives from Morocco, although the campaign was shorter than hoped," Desabre told reporters. "Going to the World Cup means a generation of Congolese will see for the first time their heroes competing at the greatest football tournament."Amid the problems in the country, that can only lift the mood of the people. My players are acutely aware of the positive role they can play by performing to the best of their abilities." The realism of Desabre, who has coached national teams and clubs in nine African countries since 2010, is echoed by captain and centre-back Chancel Mbemba from French club Lille. "I give credit to our coach Sebastien. His modesty and hard work ethic has rubbed off on the players."We are back at the World Cup after 52 years, preparing to face some nations who compete at the tournament every four years."Our promises to the people of Congo are that we will continue to be humble, keep our feet on the ground and work relentlessly to achieve success."Apart from Mbemba, DR Congo boast Real Betis striker Cedric Bakambu, Newcastle United winger Yoane Wissa and Sunderland midfielder Noah Sadiki. bur-dl/ea

Reynolds hits 2-run homer in 9th to lift the Pirates past the Twins, 6-5
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Bryan Reynolds hit a two-run homer with one out in the ninth inning — after Oneil Cruz hit a mammoth shot early — to give the Pittsburgh Pirates a 6-5 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Friday night.Reynolds launched a 422-foot shot to left field off Taylor Rogers (1-2), scoring Tyler Callihan, who replaced Spencer Horwitz after an infield hit to begin the inning. All the previous scoring came in the first three innings.Pittsburgh's Jared Jones struck out Byron Buxton on three straight fastballs that topped 100 mph in his first start in the majors since Sept. 27, 2024. Kody Clemens hit sixth homer on Jones’ seventh straight pitch above 100 to give the Twins a 1-0 lead. The 24-year-old right-hander missed more than a year after undergoing UCL surgery in 2025. He allowed five runs on seven hits in 4 1/3 innings.Twins starter Taj Bradley threw eight straight balls to put Brandon Lowe and Reynolds on base with one out in the first. Nick Gonzales reached on an infield single with Lowe scoring on a throwing error by third baseman Brooks Lee. Oneil Cruz drove in Reynolds with a grounder to first, and Konnor Griffin followed with a two-out RBI single for a 3-1 advantage.Tristan Gray tied it 3-3 with a bases-loaded two-run single in the second, and Trevor Larnach followed in the third with his third homer — a 424-foot shot that left the park in right to put the Twins up 5-3.Cruz hit his 12th home run — a two-out 450-shot that also left the park in right to cut it to 5-4 in the third.Clemens threw Cruz out at home in the eighth to keep it 5-4 after the Pirates had runners on second and third with nobody out and failed to score.Wilber Dotel allowed one hit in three innings of relief for Pittsburgh, and Gregory Soto (4-0) pitched a perfect ninth for the win.Bradley gave up four runs on five hits in four innings.Up nextTwins RHP Bailey Ober (6-2, 3.92) was set to start Saturday opposite Pirates RHP Mitch Keller (5-2, 3.64).___AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/mlb

Johnston advances in D-II softball playoffs with win over Portsmouth
JOHNSTON – The pressure that comes with now or never seems to suit Haley Boudreau. Johnston’s senior pitcher has been dominant and outwardly carefree in her most important outings of her final softball season. Friday afternoon was no exception. Boudreau controlled a dangerous Portsmouth offense and bought her own hitters time to jump in front. The Panthers did all their scoring in the bottom of the third inning, enough support for Boudreau to author a 3-1 victory at Wood Lake Park. Alanna Colon’s run-scoring triple and Bella Boudreau’s infield out gave Johnston what it needed to reach the Division II winner’s bracket final. Savannah Paquin added a bases-loaded walk to hand the Panthers a three-run cushion, and Boudreau allowed just a Lilly Morgado solo homer with two outs in the top of the sixth. “Right away, the first inning, I felt like I was throwing good,” Boudreau said. “I had so much confidence after that. I say it over and over again – it's confidence in that first inning.” Lincoln awaits in a scheduled 3 p.m. first pitch Sunday at Rhode Island College, and the winner will be sitting pretty in the double-elimination format. Johnston reached title rounds in 2002 and 2004 but hasn’t been back in more than two decades, a target for Boudreau throughout her strong career to date. The Panthers pinned a lone defeat on the Lions during the regular season, part of what is now a five-game winning streak. “We want to go into it with a lot of confidence and say, ‘Hey, we’re going to go beat them again,’” Colon said. “We’re going to go into this game with a lot of confidence.” The Patriots managed just a Mia Ruggieri single in the second and a Josephine Rainey walk in the third during their first trip through the order. That left the door open for the Panthers to strike, and they capitalized when Mariah Fleury beat out an infield single in the third. She took second on a wild pitch and cruised home when Colon sent one to deep right that gave the hosts a 1-0 edge. “I just caught it on the right part of the bat,” Colon said. “Happened to catch a triple on the right day.” Bella Boudreau’s grounder to the right side chased in Colon before Johnston started fresh with two outs. Samaya Imondi and Kendall Duguay both singled, Melissa Aria drew a walk and Paquin followed with another to force home Imondi and make it 3-0. The Panthers had just one more batter reach safely over the next three frames, but the damage was done. “We have a lot of faith in [Boudreau],” Colon said. “Let’s get a few runs and we should be good.” It was Boudreau’s game from there, and she retired 10 straight before Morgado laced the first pitch she saw to deep left-center with two outs in the sixth. Boudreau got right back on track with a harmless pop back to the circle and worked around a one-out error in the seventh, finishing with the last three of her 11 strikeouts. It was her lone assignment of the day – Boudreau is done with her classwork and awaiting formal graduation ceremonies. “I was worried about the game all day long,” Boudreau said. “But we pulled through.” Johnston (16-3) posted a 3-1 win over Lincoln on May 18 and will be looking for the same in the rematch. A loss will force a three-game winning streak to claim the championship – the route is now even longer for Portsmouth (13-6), which faces East Greenwich next in an elimination game. Boudreau was looking forward to an extra day of rest thanks to an announced Saturday postponement due to expected inclement weather. “We’ve been practicing really hard, especially this week,” Colon said. “We knew this was a big game, and we know we have a big game coming up after this.”Portsmouth 000 001 0 – 1 2 2 Johnston 003 000 x – 3 6 1 Mia Ruggieri and Barbara Rainey. Lowell Spinners baseball returns in sold-out home opener after six-year hiatus
The reinvented Lowell Spinners baseball team made its long-awaited return to the city in a fun-packed home opener after a six-year hiatus.Within hours of the first pitch, tickets were nearly sold out at LeLacheur Park, which seats 4,700 fans.“I’m super excited, and this is my first game!” said nine-year-old Mason Jean, who excitedly showed off his autographed baseball, unfazed by light rain throughout the game. The Spinners team is the newest franchise in the Futures Collegiate Baseball League, marking the return of summer baseball to Lowell.“I want to steal bases, I want to get bunts down, I want to run fancy plays and stuff – give the fans a chance to ‘ooh’ and ‘ahh’,” said Lowell Spinners manager and coach Kevin Graber. It’s a new chapter for the community after the former Lowell Spinners were cut as a Red Sox affiliate in 2020.“I’m a UMass Lowell alum; I played here in Lowell for years and years,” said Spinners Principal Owner and Chief Baseball Officer Mark Deschenes. “So, to bring that back to the thirsty fan base that was here was something special to be able to do.”In just 5.5 months, the new ownership team put together a talented roster of college athletes from around the country and right home in Lowell.“It’s amazing,” said Charlie Beauregard, a Bard College athlete who played ball for the Junior Spinners as a kid. “I live right up the street. So, growing up watching the Spinners, I used to hold the American flag out there in left field. So, it’s pretty cool to play for them now.”Families enjoyed a bounce house and face painting for the kids, a speed pitch challenge, a beer garden, and all-you-can-eat barbecue before a post-game running of the bases and fireworks show. With tickets $10 to $12 per ticket, parents said the affordability and accessibility of the park made the outing a much easier sell than heading into Boston.“The price is amazing, and it’s so close to home,” said mom Crystal Jolicoeur, who brought her two young sons to the game. “We’re glad to have them back.”Playing for the Spinners is a huge opportunity for the young athletes, so many of whom have Major League aspirations.Past Spinners alumni include Mookie Betts, Kevin Youkilis, Jonathan Papelbon, and Jacoby Ellsbury.Lowell Mayor Erik Gitschier threw the ceremonial first pitch, celebrating a new chapter for the city and the economic impact on the area.“We’re looking forward to it. Everyone’s excited,” Gitschier said. “You can see the restaurants are all smiling and they’re open. And we’re seeing some growth. That’s good for us.”Download the FREE Boston 25 News app for breaking news alerts.Follow Boston 25 News on Facebook and Twitter. | Watch Boston 25 News NOW

Canes blitz Montreal 6-1 to advance to Stanley Cup Final
The 20-year wait is over. The Carolina Hurricanes are going back to the Stanley Cup Final. The Hurricanes left no doubt on Friday night, blitzing the Montreal Canadiens 6-1 to win the Eastern Conference Final in five games and advance to the championship series against the Vegas Golden Knights.Box ScoreThe Stanley Cup Final begins Tuesday night in Raleigh. The Hurricanes last made a Final appearance in 2006, when they won their only Stanley Cup. All games will air on ABC11.Carolina Hurricanes owner Tom Dundon as the final horn sounds. The Canes are going to the Stanley Cup for the first time in 20 years. pic.twitter.com/GV23ZsNF4m— Kate Rogerson (@KateRogersonTV) May 30, 2026Logan Stankoven celebrates his goal against the Montreal Canadiens during the first period on Friday in Raleigh. Karl DeBlakerThis story will be updated.PREVIOUS STORYJordan Staal looks at the Carolina Hurricanes' on-their-game play as being part of a machine. One that keeps rolling through its process, over and over, in smothering scoring chances and keeping the pressure on an opponent. It has them within a win of reaching their first Stanley Cup Final in two decades entering Friday night's home Game 5 against the Montreal Canadiens in the Eastern Conference Final. One fan said it's been "amazing" to watch the Hurricanes this season."Right now, when you get into these grooves, it's just kind of the machine," the captain told reporters Thursday morning in Montreal. "You just kind of want to keep it running, keep doing what you're doing."I don't think the guys will waver too far from the next shift, the next play, the hyper-focus that we're on."The Carolina Hurricanes Foundation has given back to the community during the playoff run. "We are excited that we could offer these grants."The Eastern Conference's top seed started this series with a jarringly horrid start after going 11 days between playoff rounds - the longest postseason layoff in more than a century - and promptly allowing four goals in the first 11-plus minutes of a 6-2 loss.Ever since, though, the Hurricanes have gotten more and more to their preferred style that helped them sweep through Ottawa and Philadelphia in the first two playoff rounds. And that has helped them grab control of the series from the on-the-rise Canadiens, who arrived at this round earlier than some expected.Retired NHL legend Claude Lemieux was also Freddie Andersen's agent.Carolina won a pair of 3-2 overtime games, first at home and then on the road, then dominated from the puck drop of Wednesday's 4-0 road romp that pushed the Hurricanes to a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven series.SEE ALSO: Mebane Canes superfan's collection spans a lifetimeThe Hurricanes are getting the puck into the offensive zone, using the aggressive forecheck to keep it there and pressure the Canadiens while giving talented goaltender Jakub Dobes a lot of work. The Game 4 win offered a withering case study, with Carolina scoring three goals in a nearly three-minute span of the first period, then shutting off everything as the Canadiens tried to regroup. It wasn't perfect. Notably, there was a nearly two-minute 5-on-3 opportunity in which the Hurricanes didn't put a shot on Dobes with a chance to knock out the Canadiens midway through the second period. Not that their coach was dwelling on it."I'm not pointing at any negative on this game, no chance," Rod Brind'Amour said Thursday morning. Now the pressure is fully on the Canadiens, who battled through two long series that included Game 7 road wins at Tampa Bay and Buffalo, while the Hurricanes started 8-0 in the postseason. The Carolina Hurricanes' mascot isn't shying away from the spotlight ahead of Game 5 on Friday night.Montreal hadn't lost consecutive games since mid-March and hadn't lost three straight games since a five-game skid in November."Obviously, everybody knows where we're at, we do," forward Cole Caufield said Thursday after the team arrived in North Carolina. The Canadiens pounced on the slow-starting Hurricanes in Game 1 by repeatedly getting clean breakouts and breakaways with skaters hitting full speed as they blew unchecked through the neutral zone.Outlandish outfits and props are part of the fun as the Caniacs enjoy a memorable playoff run.But as this series has worn on, the Canadiens have looked a half-step - sometimes more - behind.Montreal defenseman Alexandre Carrier said Thursday the focus is down to small details, such as winning more 1-on-1 battles, and then building from there to hopefully stop the Hurricanes' push."It's a big opportunity," Carrier said. "We're not dead yet. So it's important to really be excited for tomorrow and confident. And I'm excited to see what we can do."SEE ALSO: Hurricanes and Canadiens playoff run sparks friendly rivalry between couple, their Raleigh barThe Hurricanes have more than double the shots on goal (108-43) in the past three games. And while some of that is due to a style that naturally leans into shot volume, the Hurricanes have steadily tightened their defensive grip on a skilled Canadiens team. The Hurricanes took a 19-3 edge in shots on goal in the third period, keeping the Canadiens pinned in their defensive zone while finishing with a total of 18 shots. That marked the second time in three games that Carolina had more shots on goal in a period than Montreal had for the game, the other in the first period of Game 3 (16-13).Carolina had a 42-15 edge in high-danger chances for Games 2, 3 and 4, according to Natural Stat Trick."We talk about all the time defending as a five-man unit," Carolina defenseman Jaccob Slavin said. "And our forwards are doing a great job of helping out with that, and allowing us to be tight-gapped, allowing us to be aggressive, allowing us to play the way we have to play."- The Associated Press contributed.

May 29, 2026; Arlington, Texas, USA; A view of Texas Rangers fans wearing the Nolan Ryan Bloody Lip jersey giveaway shirts during the game between the Rangers and the Kansas City Royals at Globe Life Field. Mandatory Credit: Jerome Miron-Imagn Images | Jerome Miron-Imagn Images The Texas Rangers scored nine runs while the Kansas City Royals scored one run. After getting battered and bruised by leaguewide losers over the past couple of weeks, the Rangers donned their blood red tops with a sellout crowd decked out in replica Nolan Ryan bloody jerseys to witness an increasingly rare feat for Texas in 2026.The Rangers came into tonight’s game having lost seven consecutive series-opening contests, with their lone series opener victory of the month coming on the first day of the month when they beat the Detroit Tigers on May 1 in a series they would eventually lose. The Rangers drew first blood in the first inning in what would essentially become the story of the game. The Royals opened the game with a two-out double with a runner on but that runner had to halt at third base. Texas starter MacKenzie Gore got the last out to strand both runners in scoring position to keep KC off the board. As we’re all well aware, securing a clean first inning has been a struggle for Texas this season but Gore getting out of danger helped to ignite the team for a crooked number in the bottom half of the inning.Like Kansas City, the Rangers got a two-out double with a runner on base but that runner was Joc Pederson who led off the game with a walk. Pederson isn’t exactly swift these days so he too stayed at third base meaning it fell on Ezequiel Duran to deliver on the exact same situation that the Royals could not.Much like with the top of the inning, where Texas has too often allowed early runs to start games with a deficit, two-out RBI situations have too often been wasted by the Rangers. However, the narratives continued to flip as Duran delivered with a two-out, two-run single that snowballed into an even bigger frame. After Duran’s single, Evan Carter blooped a double toward the left field line and then Alejandro Osuna reached on an error to score Duran. Eventually Carter scored as well when Osuna attempted to steal second base and Royals’ catcher Salvador Perez threw the ball the ball away trying to throw him out. After bloodying KC’s lip in the first, the Rangers tacked on two more each in the fifth and sixth innings with Brandon Nimmo hitting a two-run homer in the fifth and newcomer Nicky Lopez hitting just the eighth home run over his nearly 700-game big league career. The dinger from the former Royals’ infielder was also of the two-run variety which gave Texas an 8-0 lead. In the top of the eighth, Pederson capped off the scoring for Texas with a solo dong of his own before the Royals prevented the shutout with a run in the ninth off Gavin Collyer when it was far too little and far too late. Despite the fact that the Rangers went on to comfortably win by eight runs, a third first inning two-out hit by KC or the Rangers failing to cash in on their own two-out opportunity a half inning later could have easily altered the course of the evening.Nevertheless, Texas did have themselves a rare charmed first inning and that fed into what would become an even rarer first game of a series win.Player of the Game: The Rangers had ten hits and scored nine runs, hit three home runs, and saw everyone in the lineup reach base with only Danny Jansen failing to get at least one hit. However, Gore tossing 6.1 innings of scoreless ball on just four hits and a walk continued a solid stretch for the left-hander as May creeps to a close. Gore, one of the league’s top strikeout artists, only had three strikeouts tonight but 63 strikes in his 99 pitches allowed him to pitch beyond the sixth inning for just the second time this season.Up Next: The Rangers and Royals play an afternoon affair with RHP Kumar Rocker making the start for Texas against RHP Seth Lugo for Kansas City. The first pitch of the second game of this series on Saturday is scheduled for 3:05 pm CDT and will be aired on the Rangers Sports Network as well as nationally on FS1.

The Heat might have a leg up over all the teams interested in Giannis Antetokounmpo
The Heat might have a leg up over all the teams interested in Giannis Antetokounmpo originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Milwaukee Bucks are ready to part ways with Giannis Antetokounmpo in the 2026 offseason. A blockbuster trade will likely happen, but the team that the Bucks will trade him to is still unknown. However, the Miami Heat might have an advantage over the rest of the league. At the 2025-26 trade deadline, the Heat had a package that enticed the Bucks. That is huge for the Heat because they might finally land a blockbuster target, but it is not a 100% sure thing, as the Bucks will take offers from any other team in the league. The Heat could land Giannis Antetokounmpo because the Bucks like their packageIt is no secret that the Heat have been chasing star players for the past few seasons. They wanted to keep building around Jimmy Butler and Adebayo, but now that the former is gone, the latter continues to be the building block. Team president Pat Riley thinks that Adebayo will be the foundation they need. However, he will need some teammates who can also play at an elite level, which is when the star player comes in. There have been plenty of names thrown around, including Donovan Mitchell and Antetokounmpo.MORE: The Heat's trade package for Giannis Antetokounmpo revealed, but it involves some salary cap issuesAntetokounmpo would immediately turn the Heat into one of the most dangerous teams in the Eastern Conference. They already have a good defense led by Adebayo, and putting Antetokounmpo on top of that makes them even harder to score against.Of course, the fit is a bit suspect because offensively, they are lacking the shooting from the frontcourt. However, Erik Spoelstra is at the helm, so anything is possible. "The Miami Heat were very motivated at the deadline. I think Milwaukee liked their offer at the time. They just weren’t ready to trade Giannis. I’m sure they’ll get back involved. I would also look at a team like Orlando," Ramona Shelburne said on The Rich Eisen Show.Moving forward, the Heat would be an interesting landing spot for Giannis. They have the infrastructure to support his hunger to win a title, and they have all the right staff to double down on their championship contention.More NBA news:An NBA executive explains why the Heat might not be able to part ways with Tyler HerroNorman Powell's free agency news that could impact a Giannis Antetokounmpo tradeHow the latest NBA Draft Lottery results impact the Giannis Antetokounmpo trade discussionsPat Riley wants to keep building the Miami Heat around Bam AdebayoPat Riley hints at building a good trade package for Giannis Antetokounmpo

NBA insider downplays talk of Lakers considering Kyrie Irving
The Los Angeles Lakers could have a real opportunity this summer to start to build a championship-caliber team around Luka Doncic. They're projected to have up to roughly $50 million in salary cap space, and while some of that could be used to re-sign their own players, they will likely want to also use cap space to bring in at least one outside player to upgrade their roster.According to Brandon "Scoop B" Robinson, there has been some discussion within the Lakers organization about possibly going after Kyrie Irving of the Dallas Mavericks. Before Luka Dončić came to the Lakers, he had a fairly successful partnership with Irving in Dallas, and the two stars took a somewhat unimpressive Mavericks team to the 2024 NBA Finals. But Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report said that bringing in Irving isn't apparently something that has a real chance of happening.“My only real understanding of what the Lakers want to do from a timeline perspective is they want to bring in a talent that fits 27-year-old Luka Doncic's timeline,” said Fischer. “As great as that pairing of Luka and Kyrie was, I think Kyrie is a little bit redundant with Austin Reaves, and the Lakers, by all accounts, do want to bring him back on the fold.“I'm not paying too much stock in the Kyrie-Luka reunion at this time. It's an interesting idea, obviously the pairing worked, but that's not something I've been made aware of at this juncture.”Irving is 34 years of age and hasn't played since March 3, 2025, when he tore his ACL. While the Lakers are in win-now mode, it doesn't seem to make sense for them to bring in any real contributors who have lots of mileage and could fall off a cliff in terms of production at any time. There has also been a bit of noise that Los Angeles could try to acquire Daniel Gafford, a Mavericks big man who can rebound, block shots and score off lob passes. Gafford played well with Doncic during their brief time as teammates, but it may be hard to imagine Dallas making another trade that would clearly help the Lakers so soon after gifting L.A. Doncic. This article originally appeared on LeBron Wire: NBA insider downplays talk of Lakers considering Kyrie Irving

Calallen baseball rallies to take Game 1 over Bullard in extra innings

The Wildcats broke through in the sixth when Reese Rusher singled and later scored on Drayton Mitchell's RBI single to cut the deficit to 3-2. Turang’s 10th-inning sacrifice fly lifts the Brewers past the Astros 5-4
HOUSTON (AP) — Jackson Chourio and David Hamilton both homered and Brice Turang’s tie-breaking RBI on a sacrifice fly in the 10th inning lifted the Milwaukee Brewers to a 5-4 win over the Houston Astros Friday night.Automatic runner Christian Yelich started the 10th on second base and moved to third when Chourio was out on a fly ball to center field. Turang’s fly ball to right field off Alimber Santa (0-1) was just deep enough to allow Yelich to slide safely into home before the throw to put the Brewers on top.Trevor Megill struck out two in the 10th for his seventh save. The Brewers trailed by three before Chourio’s two-run home run cut the lead to 4-3 in the fifth. They tied it 4-all when a run scored on a groundout by Jake Bauers with one out in the eighth inning. The Astros loaded the bases with one out in the ninth, but Abner Uribe (3-2) struck out Brice Matthews before retiring Isaac Paredes on a pop out to send it to the 10th.Uribe pitched for the first time since an incident on Tuesday night where he made inappropriate gestures towards the St. Louis dugout. Uribe was given a one-game suspension and an undisclosed fine Friday for his actions but was allowed to pitch Friday night after appealing the penalty.Cam Smith homered and drove in two runs for the Astros, who had won two straight.Smith connected off Coleman Crow on his shot to left center that made it 1-0 with one out in the second.Hamilton opened the third with his home run to left field to tie it.Yordan Alvarez walked with no outs in the bottom of the inning before Christian Walker reached and Alvarez moved to third on an error by third baseman Luis Rengifo.Smith followed with an RBI double to put the Astros on top. Jake Meyers doubled with one out to push the lead to 3-1. Nick Allen’s sacrifice fly sent another run home to make it 4-1.Up NextMilwaukee RHP Brandon Sproat (1-3, 5.84 ERA) opposes RHP Peter Lambert (3-4, 3.79) when the series continues Saturday.___AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/mlb

Royals lose third straight blowout, this time to Rangers, 9-1
Rangers batters saw a lot of the back of Stephen Kolek’s jersey tonight | Getty Images It has been said that when Stephen Kolek is getting ground outs in the first inning, you can tell it’s going to be a good night. Unfortunately, Kolek didn’t get a groundball until the seventh batter he faced in the first inning, and Nick Loftin turned that into an error. But let’s back up a bit.In the top of the first, Mackenzie Gore was not fooling anyone. Lane Thomas struck out swinging on a well-located fastball, but Bobby Witt Jr. barrelled a line drive to center at 107.4 for the second out. Maikel Garcia then lined a single to center at 103.8 MPH, Salvador Perez smoked a double down the line at 105.7 MPH. Starling Marte, with runners at second and third but two outs, smoked a ground ball up the middle at 102.1 MPH that old friend Nicky Lopez turned into an inning-ending groundout despite its expected batting average (xBA) of .590.The bottom of the inning had the Rangers also put a runner at second and third with two outs. Backup infielder Ezequiel Duran hit a line drive to center with a .990 xBA to score them both. Two errors later, two more runs had scored. If that first inning isn’t exemplary of the Royals’ 2026 – failing to drive in runners despite a moderately good effort, followed by giving up runs in the exact same situation, and then crumpling – I don’t know what is. What makes it the most frustrating is that, during the good stretch the Royals had for a couple of weeks, they were playing some of the most resilient baseball I’ve ever seen in my entire life. But the rest of the time, they have the resiliency of wet single-ply.Anyway, I don’t think we need to recap in detail every single moment of this game. One particularly frustrating moment was when Steven Cruz, pitching the sixth inning, allowed a two-run home run to Nicky Lopez. That was Lopez’s eighth career MLB home run in his eighth MLB season. He hadn’t hit one since 2024 until tonight. The Royals scored their lone run in the ninth inning when Rangers reliever Gavin Colyer, the first right-hander the Royals saw all night, walked Maikel Garcia and Salvador Perez to lead off the inning before giving up a nice single to Vinnie Pasquantino. He still got two strikeouts and a pop-up to end the game. One of the most consistent complaints about the Royals this year by fans – including yours truly – is that the Royals aren’t just bad, they’re also not really doing anything about it. Vinnie and Salvy not only still bat 3-4 most nights, but they’ve literally had three days off between them. Jac Caglianone and Carter Jensen still get benched for every lefty despite doing slightly better against them than Vinnie. The Royals have also had multiple opportunities to shake things up with off-days following disastrous series that they’ve completely ignored. I sat down with the FanGraphs transaction tracker and determined that the Royals have the fourth-fewest transactions in MLB since the season started, ahead of only the Padres, Cardinals, and Rangers. That includes promotions, demotions, signings, releases, and IL movement. They’ve also still got the entire coaching staff they started the year with. They are not behaving remotely like a team that feels any urgency about their predicament. One of the reasons they were able to bounce back last season to finish 82-80 was that they acted with urgency during the season, even if they could have used some more in the previous offseason. We haven’t seen any urgency in either the most recent offseason or this season, and it’s gotten pretty old.Anyway, the Royals will try again tomorrow afternoon. Seth Lugo (3.74 ERA) will face off against Kumar Rocker (3.96 ERA). The game will start at 3:05 PM CDT. I no longer expect anything to change or anything interesting to happen.

UC Bearcats baseball gets 3 homers from Jack Natili to beat Louisiana
University of Cincinnati Bearcats baseball opened its eighth appearance in the NCAA Tournament with a decisive win over Louisiana, 12-2, in Starkville, Miss. on May 29.The game started with a weather delay of a little over an hour and ended in rain, but for a second straight year, UC won the opening game of its NCAA regional. That moves the No. 2 seed Bearcats into a Saturday night game with the top seed, Mississippi State. The Bulldogs last lost at Dudy Noble Field in May when Auburn run-ruled them May 9 to take two of three games.Junior catcher Jack Natili belted three homers and a double for the Bearcats, who slammed six baseballs out of the park. Joining Natili with round-trippers were freshman Enzo Infelise, redshirt sophomore Charlie Niehaus and redshirt freshman Ryan Tyranski."It's a really calm feeling, just that 'flow state," Natili told ESPN+ about his three dingers. Golden State Warriors 2025-26 player grades: Gary Payton II
Gary Payton II had a solid season for the Golden Warriors during the 2025-26 campaign, his fifth full season in Golden State. It was his sixth season with the franchise in total, interrupted by a brief stint with the Portland Trail Blazers (15 games). This year, Payton II finished second on the team in games played, having made 73 appearances. In those appearances the former Oregon State guard played to his strengths with physical defense on the perimeter.Despite a knee injury to Stephen Curry, Payton II didn't see much of an increase in minutes from a season prior. In 15.6 minutes per game, Payton II averaged a career-high 7.5 points to go along with 3.6 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 0.9 steals. Payton II's efficiency from the field was a positive (58.3%), but his 3-point percentage was abysmal (29.1%). Now a 10-year veteran at age 33, Payton II's longevity in the league will hinge on the development of his outside shooting, given the volume in which it's shot at in today's NBA. Looking ahead to next year, Payton II is one of Golden State's 10 free agents this summer.Overall grade: C+This article originally appeared on Warriors Wire: Warriors 2025-26 player grades: Gary Payton II

POSTGAME: Phoenix Mercury DROP 5th Straight Despite a BETTER Defensive Performance
The Phoenix Mercury have now lost five straight games and sit at 2-7 after another loss to the New York Liberty. The frustrating part? Phoenix did a lot of things well enough to win. Alyssa Thomas and Kahleah Copper each scored 15 points, the Mercury forced 17 turnovers, and held New York under 70 points deep into the fourth quarter. But poor shooting, a massive rebounding deficit, and another offensive drought proved too much to overcome. Analysis: What to make of NBA’s attempt to curb tanking
A person attends the NBA basketball draft lottery in Chicago, Sunday, May 10, 2026. | Nam Y. Huh On its face, the NBA’s new lottery system seems to be capable of doing exactly what the NBA wants it to do — curb tanking. But the unintended consequences of these new reforms will change how trades are negotiated, the value of draft picks as assets, how teams are able to rebuild and could end up angering everyone from general managers to NBA fans.On Thursday, the NBA board of governors approved comprehensive and sweeping changes to the league’s lottery system. Say hello to the 3-2-1 lottery — so named because of how many lottery balls are up for grabs for each team. Here’s how it works:Previously the lottery determined the top four picks for the draft, with picks 5-14 determined by inverse order of regular-season record. The new system expands to 16 teams and each of the top 16 picks of the draft will be determined via lottery. The three teams with the worst records will get two lottery balls each. The teams with the seven next worst records will each get three, the four teams that finished 9th and 10th in the Play-In Tournament will get two balls each, and one ball will go to each of the losers of the 7-8 matchup in the Play-In.Teams will no longer be able to win the No. 1 pick two years in a row with their own pick. This includes the results of the 2026 lottery, which means the Washington Wizards are not able to win the No. 1 pick in 2027.Teams are also not allowed to have top-5 picks for three straight years. This rule backdates to the 2025 draft. The restrictions on these picks will apply to a pick even if it is traded. So, for example, the Jazz traded a 2027 first-rounder to the Memphis Grizzlies in the Jaren Jackson Jr. deal — the most favorable of the Jazz, Cleveland Cavaliers and Minnesota Timberwolves. Since the Jazz picked 5th in 2025 and will pick 2nd in the upcoming draft, they are not allowed to have a top-5 pick in 2027, and that will apply to the pick that now belongs to Memphis, which is why the Grizzlies were the only team to vote against the new lottery reforms on Thursday.Previously, the second round of the draft was based on inverse order of regular-season win-loss record without being tied to lottery results. Now, picks 31 through 46 will be in inverse order of the lottery results. So, the team that wins the lottery will have the 46th pick, and the team that picks 16th in the first round will have the first pick of the second round — pick 31.And finally, NBA commissioner, Adam Silver has more power to punish naughty, tanking teams. He can fine a tanking team up to $10 million, reduce their lottery odds, force a team to forfeit draft picks, and change draft positions. Here’s a nifty visual of how the new lottery odds will look:The NBA's new draft lottery odds, visualized ⬇️ https://t.co/bUdgWPReF9pic.twitter.com/IizHm5nL3M— Lev Akabas (@LevAkabas) May 28, 2026Here’s what will change and what could change in the NBA, based on the lottery reforms:Teams that are truly bad, that aren’t tanking and end up at the bottom of the standings, run the risk of staying at the bottom and not being able to build their way out.Meanwhile, teams that are already on the rise and make the Play-In tournament, have just as much chance of winning the lottery as the worst teams in the league. Can you imagine the fury of the Wizards, Jazz or Grizzlies this year if the Warriors had won the lottery this year? In the new system, that is a much more likely scenario.Already, with the Memphis-Jazz example from above, we see that traded assets are already changing in value. But with the new odds, executives across the league expect that trade negotiations are going to entirely change. The new system could increase the value of picks from some teams while devaluing assets from another team.First-round picks from a team that is at the bottom of the standings will be seen as less valuable than those from a team a few spots higher in the standings because of the new odds, which is another way that teams at the bottom could be handcuffed in trying to rebuild.Because the odds are flatter across the board, the market could shift, requiring more picks in deals than we’ve seen before because teams will want more swings in the lottery. That shift could make trade season quieter with teams not willing to part with multiple assets.Additionally, there is a sunset clause in the new lottery system, meaning the NBA can review and make changes again after three seasons. So, there’s incentive now for teams to hold off on major wheeling and dealing until 2029 or at least not trade any picks past 2029 until they know what kind of value those picks will have. There are probably dozens of other ways that this could go sideways or impact the way the NBA ecosystem works outside of the lottery itself. And this experiment, meant only to curb tanking, will play out over the next three years and has the potential to impact teams across the league far beyond 2029.

Mariemont comes from behind to beat rival for regional title
The Mariemont girls lacrosse team has succeeded this year with a potent and balanced offense. After struggling with passing and turnovers for three quarters, the Warriors put together a championship quality fourth quarter to edge rival Indian Hill, 11-9, in the Ohio High School Athletic Association Division II, Region 8 championship game May 29 at Mariemont’s Kusel Stadium.Mariemont (19-2) advances to next week’s state semifinals June 3 at Centerville. Indian Hill finishes 12-6.Mariemont won its first regional title since claiming state championships in 2021 and 2022. Several players from those teams were in the stadium to cheer on their program.“We really want to finish this job that we started, and we’re so excited,” said senior captain Charlotte Soller. “We really had the heart and the character. Our love for each other and the support for each other all came through.”Indian Hill had gone to state in 2023 and 2024, but had lost 15-8 to the Warriors on April 30.The Braves came out determined to avenge that loss and displayed that regional championship form all night, leading for most of the first three quarters. They led 3-1 in the first period, and 9-7 in the third period when Mariemont responded with three straight goals. Mariemont tied it at 9 entering the final period.Sophomore Nellie Deeter scored four minutes into the fourth quarter to put Mariemont up, 10-9. Junior Piper Farrell made it 11-9. She led the team with five goals.Mariemont committed 11 turnovers on the night, but the Warriors had the ball for most of the fourth quarter by winning faceoffs, being patient on offense and forcing turnovers on their own.“We struggled with our throwing and catching, which is uncharacteristic for us,” said Mariemont head coach Kevin Ferry. “We made a couple of personnel changes. The girls we took out were playing great, but we thought if we mixed things up a little bit we might have some different outcome, and it worked out in our favor.”Mariemont has seven players with 28 or more goals. Farrell has a team-high 48 after matching her season high.“She was explosive tonight and she was really our spark plug,” Ferry said. “She’s got a quick first step.
They gave her enough space that she could work her way inside and then she finished tonight. She did a great job of finding the net.”Farrell gave the team a big boost by scoring with under a second to play in the first half, tying the game 6-6. ‘This is who they are’: Sox look legit near 60 games in
Patrick Gorski-Imagn ImagesThere’s some serious mojo brewing on the south side. The White Sox are three games above .500 almost 60 games into the season, a point when it’s safe to say the sample size is big enough to get a read on what a team is like. In the White Sox case, they’re in second place in their division and have a nearly 50 percent chance at making the playoffs with Friday night’s 4-3 extra-inning walk-off win over the Tigers, and they seem to be gaining momentum. It’s far too early to start thinking about the postseason much, but again, it’s late enough in the 2026 campaign to take what the Sox are doing seriously.“At this point you kind of feel like that it’s not just a good few games we had, or a good week where we were locked in and playing hard, but this is who they are,” manager Will Venable said.Entering Friday’s game, the Sox were fifth in baseball in home runs, seventh in runs scored, and eighth in wins above replacement. On the mound, their starting rotation is near the top third of the league in ERA, and the bullpen has had some standout performances. And those metrics are trending upward for the White Sox, who were seven games below .500 three weeks into the season. Since then, they’ve posted a winning record, and in an American League that does not have many teams in playoff shape, it’s easy to start dreaming of the team’s first postseason appearance in five years, something that would be especially satisfying given how bad things looked as recently as 2024.“We’re exceeding everybody’s expectations so far,” Andrew Benintendi told CHGO. “Obviously, it’s a long season, but in the clubhouse we’re confident in there. Everybody’s buying into what their role is and whatnot. I think before the year had you told us we’d be where we are right now, we’d have said it.” Friday’s win was a window into both what Rate Field could be like this summer — and perhaps even the fall — and the kind of baseball the Sox are playing. With over 30,000 fans in attendance, many of them participating in the “tarps off” cheer that has made its way across baseball stadiums this spring, the Sox rallied in the ninth after trailing for eight innings to tie the Tigers on a Rikuu Nishida sacrifice bunt that scored Benintendi from third. And then after Detroit scored their courtesy runner in the top of the tenth, Miguel Vargas smacked Drew Anderson’s 0-1 changeup into the left field seats to give the Sox their 15th comeback win and fourth walk-off of the season.LET'S GO! MIGUEL VARGAS! pic.twitter.com/DfFCbmOhEm— Chicago White Sox (@whitesox) May 30, 2026“I said that earlier in the season,” Vargas said of how good he thinks the Sox can be. “Probably a lot of people don’t believe me. I think the clubhouse did believe in that. We put that on the field every day.”The moments like Vargas’ homer grab the bulk of the attention, and him circling the bases will be the primary highlight of the game, but a part of what’s giving the Sox these kinds of moments is the work of the bullpen. In Friday’s game, Brandon Eisert tossed a scoreless inning and a third as the opener, and Sean Newcomb, Seranthony Dominguez, and Bryan Hudson picked things up after Erick Fedde held the Tigers to two runs in his four innings pitched. “We’re all kind of antsy down there,” Hudson told CHGO. “We see the game, how it’s going. We know it’s a close game, and everyone’s a dog down there. They want to pitch, so everyone’s antsy.“We never count ourselves out in games like this. We’re all kind of itching, staying locked in, and just kind of fighting for each other to be good out there.”If there’s anything that could wind up a stumbling block for the Sox, it’s either getting ahead of themselves and counting proverbial playoff chickens before they’re hatched, or, the baseball gods forbid, injuries to key players. As far as the former, the Sox are keeping a healthy perspective, thanks in part to the veteran presence of guys like Benintendi.“You start looking too far ahead, it’s unrealistic,” Benintendi said. “If you show up to work every day, you do your routine, you go do your work, and you play.”But when it comes to the latter, there might be concern. In the third inning Friday, Munetaka Murakami beat out a throw to first to reach on a fielder’s choice, but he left the game with a right hamstring strain that Venable said might sideline him for a couple of weeks. Patrick Gorski-Imagn ImagesVenable said no official injured list decision would be made until Saturday at the earliest, but his initial expectation was that the Sox first baseman would be out for long enough to require an IL stint. This would be a significant blow, given that Murakami is tied for second in baseball with 20 home runs, and given that he’s played in every game so far this season. There does seem to be help coming, as ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported that Jacob Gonzalez was getting a callup in the wake of Murakami’s injury.Gonzalez, who is slashing .308/.414/.646 with 18 homers in 51 games, was pulled early from his game with Triple-A Charlotte Friday, and assuming he is on his way to Chicago, he might be able to help fill some of the void left by Murakami, as big as those shoes might be.The good news for Sox fans is that Murakami’s injury does not appear to be overly serious. He walked off the field rather easily on Friday, and Venable described it as “a little hamstring strain,” so Murakami’s absence is not likely to be drawn out. So even if Gonzalez provides a mild boost, the rest of the Sox offense should be able to absorb enough of the missing power to keep the winning going. If they do, expect a lot more nights like Friday. There was an energy at Rate Field that hasn’t been there in a number of years, and as he looked around at the crowd, Venable recognized the buzz as something yielded by several years of work rebuilding the team. As of late May, they can all see the fruits of that labor.“Just proud of the progress of the organization,” Venable said. “We have something on the field that fans are excited to come watch and be a part of our games and the effort these guys are putting on the field. Just proud of the organization.”

Orlando Pride forward and Golden Boot leader Barbra Banda exits match with injury
Orlando Pride forward and National Women’s Soccer League Golden Boot leader Barbra Banda went down with an apparent non-contact injury in a 3-1 Friday night win against Bay FC and was subbed off.A Pride spokesperson told The Athletic that Banda is being evaluated and that the club is unlikely to share additional updates Friday.Banda plays for the Zambian women’s national team and currently leads the NWSL in scoring with 11 goals in 12 games. Two came in Friday’s match, which was delayed about an hour due to weather conditions. Banda’s first goal in the fourth minute was the fastest Orlando had scored all season. Bay answered three minutes later to equalize, and Banda put Orlando back ahead in the 51st. In the 54th, Pride fullback Cori Dyke locked in the victory with a third goal.In the 78th minute, center official Jaclyn Metz paused the match when she was alerted that Banda was down. The striker was visibly emotional, covering her tear-streaked face first with her hands, then her jersey. The Pride had already used all five of their substitutions and were unable to make any changes after Banda went off, requiring them to see out the match with 10 players.Banda returned to play this year after suffering a season-ending adductor injury last August. Pride manager Seb Hines said in a post-match news conference that Banda’s form is “probably what everyone’s familiar with, you know, those passes through the lines and her using her pace to then put herself one-on-one with the goalkeeper.”He emphasized that this season, “she’s added another level, that kind of finishing technique rather than just shooting.”After missing the second half of last season, Hines called Banda “hungry,” which has been apparent in her performances.Friday night was the Pride’s last match before the league enters its summer break. Orlando will be one of the teams going into the pause with a game in hand and is currently seventh in the table with 17 points. After a quiet start, the Pride finished the first part of the season on an upswing, winning their last two games. The Pride were the 2024 NWSL Shield winners and champions, and Banda scored their lone goal in the final and was named the championship MVP.This season, Banda This season, Banda has scored all but six of the Pride’s 17 goals. This article originally appeared in The Athletic.Orlando Pride, NWSL2026 The Athletic Media Company

Two Queens, One Crown: The Paths That Led Allycia Hellen Rodrigues And Phetjeeja To Their Historic Clash At The Inner Circle On June 19
Two of the greatest pound-for-pound female strikers on the planet finally share the same ring in the main event of The Inner Circle on Friday, June 19.Reigning ONE Women’s Atomweight Muay Thai World Champion Allycia Hellen Rodrigues puts her 26 pounds of gold on the line against reigning ONE Women’s Atomweight Kickboxing World Champion “The Queen” Phetjeeja, going down exclusively on live.onefc.com.View this post on InstagramSince arriving in the world’s largest martial arts organization, both fierce warriors have carved their own paths to greatness. The roads were different, but the destination was always the same. Now, the super-fight that fans have been waiting for is finally here.Originally slated for ONE Fight Night 41 in March, the bout was postponed after both athletes sustained injuries during training camp. The wait has only sharpened the anticipation, and both women are now healthy, focused, and ready to handle business. For Rodrigues, this is her fifth defense and her stiffest test yet. A win would bring Phetjeeja’s reign of terror to an end and leave no doubt about who stands at the top of the pound-for-pound rankings. View this post on InstagramMeanwhile, Phetjeeja enters eyeing two-sport glory. A victory would make her ONE’s next two-sport queen, joining a prestigious lineage by holding both atomweight striking World Titles simultaneously. Before this historic night, here’s how both women arrived at this moment. The Rise Of The Mom-ChampAllycia Hellen Rodrigues authored one of the most audacious arrivals in the promotion’s history, capturing the World Title in her very first fight. At ONE: A NEW BREED in August 2020, the Fortaleza native challenged inaugural ONE Atomweight Muay Thai World Champion Stamp Fairtex. What followed was a grueling five-round war, but Rodrigues’ relentless clinch work and iron composure proved the difference, edging the Thai fan-favorite by majority decision to claim the belt she had long dreamed of. But life happened, and the Brazilian stepped away from competition to welcome the birth of her first child. At ONE Fight Night 8 in March 2023, Rodrigues returned with a statement in a unification bout against one of the greatest female strikers in the sport’s history, Janet Todd.View this post on InstagramThe Phuket Fight Club standout absorbed everything the American brought and responded with pressure and precision to take the unanimous decision and unify the divisional belts. That win broke barriers beyond the sport. Rodrigues had become a mom-champ, proof that motherhood and martial arts glory belong on the grandest stage.Rodrigues continued her reign at ONE Fight Night 20 in March 2024, dismantling Cristina Morales with punishing knees across five dominant rounds for another unanimous decision win.Despite her success, she never stopped evolving and grew more dangerous with each outing. At ONE Fight Night 29 in February 2025, Rodrigues set her elbows loose on English challenger Marie McManamon, unleashing devastating combinations to stop her via TKO in round four.View this post on InstagramHer most emphatic finish arrived at ONE Fight Night 33 in July 2025, when she showcased vastly improved boxing to knock out Johanna Persson in round three. That incredible run of form gives her all the confidence she needs heading into the biggest fight of her life. “The Queen” Who Was Born To RuleView this post on InstagramLong before the global stage came calling, Phetjeeja was already a prodigy of a different kind. The legend of “The Girl Who Could Defeat Boys” swept across Thailand, and by age 10, she had over 100 fights to her name, routinely dismantling male opposition. An absurd career record of 210-6 speaks for itself. When Phetjeeja brought her talents to ONE, she wasted no time proving every bit of hype was real. The Pattaya native annihilated Fani “Warrior Princess” Peloumpi and Ines Pilutti, earning a six-figure contract from the ONE Friday Fights series. Then, the Thai quickly proved she belonged on the main roster with stoppage victories over Lara Fernandez and Celest Hansen.View this post on InstagramThose four straight finishes opened the door to interim kickboxing gold. Phetjeeja’s shot came against the legendary Anissa Meksen, and it was the perfect proving ground for just how seamlessly her striking arsenal translated to the kickboxing rule set. At ONE Friday Fights 46 in December 2023, Phetjeeja overcame Meksen’s dreaded counter-striking with aggressive, high-volume offense over five rounds to claim the ONE Interim Women’s Atomweight Kickboxing World Title. She added another legend to her resume at ONE Fight Night 20 in March 2024, unifying the kickboxing gold by defeating Janet Todd by unanimous decision in her retirement fight. “The Queen” wasted no time defending her undisputed crown, utilizing hard body kicks and clinical boxing combinations to outclass Kana by unanimous decision at ONE 172 in March 2025. View this post on InstagramFinally, she returned to her roots to switch back to the “art of eight limbs” at ONE Fight Night 38 in December 2025. The Team Mehdi Zatout standout looked as if she had never left, dismantling Martyna Dominczak by TKO in round one. That trail of excellence has led Phetjeeja to this moment, where she stands on the precipice of two-sport immortality.Source

Undefeated Bainbridge soccer rallies to reach state championship game
FEDERAL WAY — Bainbridge's boys soccer team hasn't faced many come-from-behind situations this spring. Presented with that situation Friday, May 29 after falling behind 1-0 against No. 12 Sehome in the Class 2A semifinals, the top-seeded and undefeated Spartans showed no fear.Junior Magnus Hauge and senior Will Treverton scored three minutes apart late in the first half and senior goalkeeper Cooper Harrington made several key stops in the final minutes of action as Bainbridge prevailed 2-1 to book a spot in Saturday's title game. Bainbridge (22-0) faces No. 2 Squalicum at 2:45 p.m. in Federal Way."Be excited now," Bainbridge head coach Mark Nowak said, "but as soon as we walk out of the stadium, there's one more job to do."Sehome went ahead in the seventh minute, taking advantage of a corner kick. The Spartans lost Kevin Schoeder at the far post and the junior defender beat Harrington with a header, putting the Mariners up 1-0. "That's what happens on these big stages is these jitters come out," Nowak said, "and we don't play the game that we usually do."Bainbridge trailed until the 37th minute when senior Blake Moyer sent a cross from the left side of the field to Hauge, who beat Sehome's goalkeeper with a perfectly-placed header, knotting the score 1-1. Not bad considering Hauge is a standout central defender for the Spartans. He saw a chance to make a run after Bainbridge gathered control at midfield and made his shot count."He's so valuable in that back line," Nowak said. "If we had two of them, one of them would be higher up the field."Right before halftime, the Spartans struck again. Sophomore Aiden Hauge, Marcus' younger brother, gained possession near Sehome's net and fed a pass across the goal mouth to Treverton, who calmly left-footed a shot into th goal to put Bainbridge ahead 2-1. Both teams traded offensive opportunities in the second half and Sehome came close on a couple occasions to finding an equalizer in the late going. Harrington deflected at least one shot off the goal frame and he made two stops from in close as Sehome pushed to send the game into overtime."Incredible saves," Nowak said. "When called upon, he's great for us."Now Bainbridge finds itself in position to win its first boys soccer state title since 2013 when the Spartans topped a Mercer Island team featuring current Seattle Sounders forward Jordan Morris. "One more," Nowak said, "one more."This article originally appeared on Kitsap Sun: Undefeated Bainbridge soccer rallies to reach state championship game

Karl-Anthony Towns and the Knicks are ready to step up amid Mitchell Robinson's injury
Karl-Anthony Towns and the Knicks are ready to step up amid Mitchell Robinson's injury originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.Mitchell Robinson has been a fixture of the New York Knicks for a long time. While Karl-Anthony Towns has usurped him as the starting center over the past two seasons, he is still a crucial player for the team.Considering he suffered a broken right pinky finger, the rest of the Knicks must step up. He had to undergo surgery for his injury, and despite the procedure, it seems he is ready to play in the NBA Finals. He plans on playing with a protective brace on, which could limit his impact on the series.Karl-Anthony Towns and the Knicks are prepared to step up for Mitchell Robinson Ahead of the NBA Finals, where the Knicks could play either the San Antonio Spurs or the Oklahoma City Thunder, they might miss out on heavy Mitchell Robinson minutes. That is a significant blow because he has the size to keep up with a lot of players, including Victor Wembanyama and Chet Holmgren. He is a valuable player defensively, and while people rag on his free-throw shooting, he is still quite impactful. With his ability to stand out as a lob threat or an offensive rebounder, it is worth it to keep having him on the floor. With this injury, he might need some time to fully acclimate, especially since he plans on playing with a brace on.MORE: The Knicks avoid a problem with Mitchell Robinson's plan to play in the NBA FinalsThe Knicks will need to adjust even though Robinson will be available. It is on head coach Mike Brown to make the adjustments. However, the players must step up in Robinson's place because they will need to be much better if they want to weather the storm brought about by the injury."We trust everyone in this locker room. If this playoff run has shown anything, 1 through 15 can go out there, put a Knicks jersey on, and get the job done," Towns said about the Knicks adjusting with Robinson's injury.Thankfully, Towns and the rest of the Knicks are ready to help the team win. They want to keep fighting, and they will continue to be one of the most dangerous teams in league with or without Robinson in the lineup.More NBA news:Giannis Antetokounmpo is gaining more traction with the New York Knicks fansMitchell Robinson's pinky finger injury explainedThe Knicks fans might dislike what this current player said about Madison Square GardenMikal Bridges could be the key to the Knicks winning the 2026 NBA FinalsWhy Donald Trump could be part of the live crowd for the NBA Finals

How BYU men athletes and other Utah ties fared at NCAA track and field prelims on Friday
BYU’s Carter Cutting reacts after running the number 7 all-time BYU record in the 800-meter with a time of 1:47.02 during the 2026 BYU Robison Invitational at the Clarence F. Robison Track in Provo on Friday, May 1, 2026. | Rio Giancarlo, Deseret News BYU distance runners Carter Cutting, Isaac Hedengren and Tayvon Kitchen and the school’s 4x400 relay team punched their tickets to the national finals on Friday night in the NCAA West prelims in Fayetteville, Arkansas. However, BYU’s Olympic steeplechaser, James Corrigan, came up short in his attempt to get back to nationals, which will be held in two weeks in Eugene, Oregon.Cutting, a junior from Wilsonville, Oregon, placed second in the 1,500 meter quarterfinals to Oregon’s Simeon Birnbaum with a time of three minutes, 37.64 seconds. Birnbaum, the college record holder in the event (3:31.69), clocked in at 3:37.00 at John McDonnell Field, with temperatures hovering in the low 80s and 77% humidity.Hedengren, older brother of the great Jane Hedengren, turned in a time of 13:43.28, good enough for eighth place in the 5,000 meters, to advance. His teammate, Kitchen, also advanced with a time of 13:45.94.BYU’s Creed Thompson was 17th and Noah Jenkins was 21st in the same event.Corrigan, a senior who has battled some injuries this season, placed 20th in the 3,000 meter steeplechase and will not be advancing to nationals. Teammates Jefferson McMullin (23rd), Max Davis (29th) and Garrett Stanford (30th) also failed to qualify for Eugene.Utah Valley’s Cameron Jacobs placed 22nd in the steeplechase.Weber State’s Peter Visser is in, however, after placing 11th in the steeplechase with a time of 8:37.57.In the 4x100 relay quarterfinals, Utah Valley and Utah State finished 19th and 20th, respectively. In the 800 meters, Utah State’s Landon Bott qualified for nationals with a time of 1:46.96 to earn the race’s final automatic bid. In the 4x400 relay quarterfinal, BYU placed ninth to advance to Eugene with a time of 3:03.79. Runners included Ben Barton, Jonah Heimuli, Jayden Jessee and Josh Taylor. On Wednesday, BYU’s Hunter Kitchen placed 19th in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 29:21.67. Teammate Creed Thompson was 22nd (29:24.49), while Dalton Mortensen placed 43rd and Davin Thompson placed 46th.Utah State junior Walker Deede secured his first career berth in nationals in the javelin with a 12th place finish at the prelims. Also in the javelin throw, BYU’s Carson Riner was 18th after recording a throw of 65.82 meters, while teammate Brinton Paulson had a season-best mark of 65.46 meters in the same event, finishing 19th.While the men competed Wednesday and Friday, the women will wrap up the four-day competition in Arkansas on Saturday, and once again all eyes will be on BYU’s phenomenal freshman, Jane Hedengren.Having won the women’s 10,000 meters on Thursday in thrilling fashion, Hedengren will go for the distance double in the 5,000 meters. That race is scheduled to begin at approximately 7:15 p.m. MDT on Friday and can be viewed on ESPN+.
