Arsenal vs. PSG Champions League final match thread: a date with destiny
The UEFA Champions League trophy is on display at the Puskas Arena in Budapest, Hungary, on May 29, 2026, on the eve of the UEFA Champions League 2025-26 Final soccer match between Paris Saint-Germain FC and Arsenal FC. (Photo by Domenic Aquilina/NurPhoto via Getty Images) | NurPhoto via Getty Images It’s here. Today is the day. One match and the current Champions League holders, Paris St. Germain, stand between Arsenal and history. In a short while, the Gunners will take the field in Budapest for the newest “biggest match in club history” — a Champions League final.European glory is the only thing that has eluded Arsenal Football Club. They suffered an ignominious 4-1 defeat to Chelsea in the 2019 Europa League final. They lost to Barcelona 2-1 in the 2006 Champions League final. That’s the sum total of all Arsenal’s continental final appearances. Played two, lost two. Time write a new story.Arsenal against PSG has some familiar plot points. After all, the Gunners face down the petrostate wealth of Manchester City in the Premier League annually. Boy, would I like to knock off both of ‘em in the same season. On the pitch, it’s the classic sports story of attack vs. defense. PSG have the best attack in Europe. Arsenal have the best defense. When the two clubs met in last season’s Champions League semifinal, the French side advanced. 3-1 to PSG on aggregate. Victory to the attack, right? The tie was more complex than that. Gianliugi Donnarumma was outstanding and arguably won the tie for PSG much more so than their attack did. The Italian isn’t in goal for them anymore. We’ll see if Arsenal can test Matvei Safonov in the same way and if the Russian is up for the challenge. It almost feels silly to mention it, but set pieces (corners, really) might make the difference for the Gunners. We know how dangerous they are, and in a one-off match with fine margins, you take any edge you can generate. Keep an eye on how tightly the referee calls things in the box. The referee should have his work cut out for him in discerning fair from foul. I’d expect PSG to do a decent bit of flopping in an attempt to nullify Arsenal’s advantage. It’s what they did last year. Arsenal winning the Premier League title settled the nerves. at least for us supporters. I’d like to think it did the same for the squad, to the extent they suffer from them. They got their silverware, silenced the critics, and put to bed the possibilities of an uncomfortable summer with the potential for unpleasant changes. Hopefully that relaxes and frees them to play the confident, resolute, all-phases football we saw when they were at their best.Arsenal playing with house money, to an extent. They come into today’s match against PSG the underdogs. People are expecting the Parisians’ plethora of flashy attacking talent to run roughshod over the Gunners on their way to back-to-back Champions League titles. Everyone is underestimating Arsenal. Just as they have all season. The pundits picked Liverpool to win the title then jumped ship to backing Manchester City to hunt Arsenal down when Arne Slot’s side fell apart. Arsenal, not PSG, finished first in the League Phase. Arsenal, not PSG, are unbeaten in the CL this season. At the same time, the pressure is still on. The Champions League is a brutally difficult competition and knockout football is always unpredictable and often unkind. As good as your squad might be, so many things have to go right to make a final. You never know when you’ll be back. Just look at Manchester City. They lost the final in ‘21, made the SF in ‘22, won in ‘23, and haven’t advanced beyond the the QF since.Arsenal are fully fit* coming into the match. Jurrien Timber, who has missed two months with a groin problem, was declared fit enough to start by Mikel Arteta (he’ll start on the bench, though). Noni Madueke, who has been dealing with a minor knock, is good to go. The same goes for Riccardo Calafiori. Mikel Merino, whose season was in jeopardy from a broken bone in his foot that required surgery in late January, returned to the pitch last week and is on the bench. Ben White is out with a knee injury that will force him to miss the World Cup.PSG have fewer injury concerns. Both Achraf Hakimi and Ousmane Dembele are fit and starting. Keep an eye on both during the match, though. The Moroccan fullback pulled his hamstring against Bayern Munich last month, which can be a tricky injury for a player asked to sprint so frequently. Dembele has a spotty injury record generally, so it’s always a higher level of concern when he’s carrying something.ArsenalWHO: Arsenal vs Paris St. GermainWHAT: Champions League FinalWHERE: Puskás Arena, Budapest, HungaryWHEN: Saturday, May 30th, 9:00am PT | 12:00pm ET | 5:00pm GMTHOW TO WATCH: Broadcast on CBS. Jeremy Fears Jr. Returns to Lead Michigan State
Jeremy Fears Jr. is returning to Michigan State for the 2026-27 season after withdrawing from the 2026 NBA Draft before the college deadline. That keeps Tom Izzo’s lead guard in East Lansing and locks Michigan State back into an offense built around ball screens, pace control, and a guard who already handled nearly every setup duty last season.Fears announced the move late on May 27 and will return for his redshirt junior season, giving Michigan State continuity at the most important spot on the floor. Instead of replacing its primary creator, Michigan State can keep building around the same decision-maker who drove the offense in 2025-26.Michigan State keeps its top organizerFears played 35 games in 2025-26 and averaged 15.2 points, 9.4 assists, and 2.4 rebounds. He shot 43.1% from the field, 32.1% from 3-point range, and 88.5% at the line.Michigan State’s official stats credit him with 533 points and 328 assists. That 328-assist total confirms how much of the Michigan State offense ran through him. He was not just initiating sets, he was creating the shape of possessions from start to finish. When Fears entered the draft on April 10, he kept his NCAA eligibility in place. His return now spares Michigan State from a full reset at point guard and keeps one of college basketball’s most productive passers in the lineup. Why the fit matters right awayFor Izzo, this is about structure as much as production. Fears gives Michigan State a proven ballhandler who can get the team into offense, create late in the clock, and keep teammates in spots where they can finish plays instead of forcing difficult looks off the bounce. His free-throw mark matters too. A guard shooting 88.5% at the line gives Michigan State a steady late-game option with the ball. If the 3-point percentage climbs from 32.1%, the floor opens even more for Michigan State’s wings and screen-and-roll actions. The next lineup question shifts beside himFears’ return changes the offseason conversation. Michigan State no longer has to search for a new lead creator. The real competition now centers on which guard or wing earns the biggest role next to him and which lineup combinations can turn his passing into cleaner half-court offense. That makes backcourt deployment one of the first things to watch heading into 2026-27. With Fears back, Michigan State can keep the ball in experienced hands and use the preseason to sort out who complements him best as a secondary scorer, spacer, or downhill option in the rotation.

SEC breakaway discussions could reshape future of Florida football
SEC leaders are having open discussions around whether the conference should govern itself. Proposals for independent operation stem from growing frustration with the NCAA. The association has struggled to find viable solutions for the chaos surrounding NIL and the transfer portal.During SEC spring meetings, Georgia head coach Kirby Smart voiced support for the SEC creating and enforcing its own rules. Smart and other coaches are seeking a national standard of enforcement, specifically in college football. SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey said conference-led regulation is on the table if federal legislation continues to stall.Inconsistent enforcement across college athletics has sparked resentment as roster management becomes more and more perplexing in the NIL era. "I've said this for a long time to our president, I've been a huge advocate that if we can't find rules that everybody plays by, then we should play on our own," Smart said. "I'm not afraid of that. I'm not afraid to break away and say that our conference is strong enough to go out and play."Florida may be uniquely positioned in a model that is SEC-centric, given the financial advantages of the conference along with its recruiting footprint and brand recognition.Follow us @GatorsWire on X, formerly known as Twitter, as well as Bluesky, and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Florida Gators news, notes and opinions. This article originally appeared on Gators Wire: SEC independence and what it could mean for Florida football

Vingegaard poised for Giro victory after stage win
Jonas Vingegaard took control of the race last weekend [Getty Images]Overall leader Jonas Vingegaard launched an attack during the tough final climb to clinch victory in Saturday's stage 20 of the Giro d'Italia. It ensures the 29-year-old from Denmark will win the race as long as he safely finishes Sunday's final stage in Rome and become just the eighth man to complete the triple crown of road cycling's three-week showpieces. The two-time Tour de France winner, who also won last year's Vuelta a Espana, is making his first appearance in the Giro.He started the penultimate stage covering 200km from Gemona del Friuli to Piancavallo four minutes three seconds ahead of second-placed Felix Gall of Austria in the general classification.Vingegaard was happy to ride safely in the peloton for the first two-thirds of the stage between two Visma-Lease a Bike team-mates, before launching his attack in the final 10km.Gall tried to chase him down during the attack, but the Dane pulled more than a minute ahead going into the final 5km to secure a sensational solo victory, one minute 15 seconds ahead of second-placed Gall with local favourite Giulio Ciccone completing the podium.

“It’s practically a revolution”: Could Trump’s J6 slush fund be the final straw for GOP loyalists?
A former Fox host and current political analyst believes a recent Donald Trump action may have finally spurred a real rebellion among Republicans. “It’s a revolt,” wrote Howard Kurtz for Fox News. “Practically a revolution.” He said the backlash “seems to be breaking, or at least loosening, Trump’s iron grip on power.” Related “High public health treason”: LGBTQ+ advocates rage over Trump CDC removing mpox webpage At issue is Trump’s proposed $1.8 billion slush fund to compensate alleged victims targeted by “political weaponization” from former-President Joe Biden’s Department of Justice. These so-called “victims” would include rioters arrested for storming the Capitol building during the attempted January 6, 2021 insurrection. The rioters attempted to disrupt the Senate’s certification of the 2020 election results. Insights for the LGBTQ+ community Subscribe to our briefing for insights into how politics impacts the LGBTQ+ community and more. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Kurtz said for many Republicans, the concept of this massive taxpayer-funded compensation for people who have been convicted of crimes “was a bridge too far.” “Some of these people had attacked and injured police officers, seized members’ offices and chanted for Mike Pence’s hanging,” Kurtz said. Indeed, acting Attorney General Todd Blanche recently claimed that even though Trump “does not stand for assaulting law enforcement,” people who injured police officers that day could still apply for the slush funds. “Whether the commissioners will give that person money – that claimant – it’s up to them,” Blanche told CNN. Kurtz explained that the fund is a “culmination of a five-year effort by the president to recast the protestors, who he had summoned to Washington and directed to march to the Capitol, as patriots, not lawbreakers.” But Kurtz was quick to explain that the president’s narrative “is inconveniently contradicted by the relentless violence we all saw on our television screens as the riot unfolded.” “It was one of the darkest days in American history,” he wrote, “aimed at stopping Congress from certifying Joe Biden’s 2020 victory.” Before Republicans left Congress for a month-long recess on May 21, there was reportedly an explosive meeting between Blanche and a group of GOP Senators. According to reports, Blanche’s meeting with Senate Republicans was “incredibly hostile” and “didn’t go well.” One person familiar with the meeting called it a “s**t show.” CNN’s Manu Raju said that “most senators voiced opposition to the fund — hardly any came to its defense.” On his podcast, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) called it “one of the roughest meetings I’ve seen in my entire time in the Senate.” “Fiery does not begin to cut it. My guess is there’re probably 45 senators in the room, at least half of them were blasting the attorney general, and they were p**sed,” Cruz said. Kurtz pointed out that Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) told CNN the fund is a “galactic blunder.” “After the fiery session on the so-called ‘anti-weaponization’ fund, GOP leaders — concerned about having to vote on the fund — killed a scheduled vote on a $72-billion measure to crack down on illegal immigration,” Kurtz wrote. “They also refused to approve the $1 billion for the White House ballroom that the president is obsessed with building.” Nevertheless, Kurtz concedes that “as on most issues,” the president “will probably get his way” in the end. “The most likely outcome, in my view, is a mushy compromise that includes some modifications on how the awards are made,” he said. “That’s usually how the Hill deals with tough questions.” But he still emphasized that Republicans are not only speaking out against Trump’s slush fund, but also about Trump’s current negotiations with Iran. “Maybe the previously unthinkable idea of Republicans openly challenging Trump is catching on,” he posited. But LGBTQ Nation opinion writer John Gallagher isn’t so sure it will last. In a May 26 oped, he wrote that Republicans senators “are like kids holding their breath – at some point, they just give up and start breathing again, believing that they have made their point.” Subscribe to the LGBTQ Nation newsletter and be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Inside the playbook: San Antonio keeps using to hunt down the Thunder’s two bigs
Photo by Christian Petersen/Getty ImagesOklahoma City’s size was seen as a playoff advantage all season. But against San Antonio, it’s started to work against them.Chet Holmgren and Isaiah Hartenstein still provide the Thunder with length, rebounding, and rim protection. But Victor Wembanyama has turned that pairing into an offensive logjam. That issue fully surfaced in Oklahoma City’s game 4 and game 6 losses, where the Thunder produced their lowest scoring playoff game of the season while repeatedly struggling to create clean driving lanes.San Antonio isn’t just defending anymore – they’re shaping exactly where Wembanyama spends his time on court. The series is now tied 3-3, heading for Game 7.Photo by Alex Slitz/Getty ImagesWembanyama’s role mirrors that of a free safetySan Antonio has been making greater use of Wembanyama as a roaming helper, particularly when Hartenstein is on the court. This is the main spacing problem. When Hartenstein hangs around above the break or sets screens without being a shooting threat, Wembanyama can drift into the lane without giving up anything on defence. That allows him to do both tasks at once.If Holmgren makes a move behind the play, he can still recover towards the rim while staying in Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s driving path. ESPN highlighted how Wembanyama’s role resembles an off-ball rover rather than a traditional matchup. It’s something Oklahoma City hasn’t found an answer for just yet.The numbers from Game 4 explained how badly the spacing issue spiralled. Oklahoma City finished with their lowest-scoring playoff game in five years. The Thunder repeatedly forced drives into a congested lane while San Antonio maintained steady rotations around Wembanyama’s reach.Thunder’s two-big lineup is running into problems against WembanyamaThe issue isn’t really about whether Holmgren and Hartenstein can play together. It’s about how much space they leave for Wembanyama to operate. Analysts following the series have pointed out that the Thunder’s effective field goal percentage has dropped to around 40% when both are on the court. The more interesting numbers come when the lineup splits up. Oklahoma City has posted roughly a +15.4 net rating with Holmgren playing without Hartenstein and a +17.0 mark with Hartenstein anchoring solo lineups. That matters because it suggests the issue is not either player individually. For much of the season, Oklahoma City’s size seemed like a strength. But in this series, it’s become more of a roadmap for how San Antonio can defend them. The pairing of Chet Holmgren and Isaiah Hartenstein still offers the Thunder length, rebounding and rim protection. The problem is that Victor Wembanyama has turned that combination into an offensive traffic jam. This goes beyond simple defence – the Spurs are actively steering Wembanyama into positions where he can have the most impact.Read more:Gregg Popovich’s locker-room mic-drop: What echoed through every Spurs defensive possessionHow Knicks turned every game into a possession bonanza against ClevelandFront office under siege: Why the Cavs have almost no easy answers after that sweep

Ukrainian Oliynykova speaks out about war at home after French Open loss to Russian
PARIS (AP) — Ukrainian Oleksandra Oliynykova vowed to keep speaking out about the war in Ukraine after losing to Russian player Diana Shnaider in the third round of the French Open on Saturday. Before Oliynykova answered any questions at her post-match news conference, after losing to Shnaider 7-5, 6-1, she read out a statement. This was two days after she made critical comments about Shnaider.“I know that some people disagree with my actions. I know that some people would prefer that I stay silent. But what I do is not about politics, it’s about humanity,” Oliynykova said. “When people are being killed, while children are dying, when violence is justified or celebrated, we cannot pretend that nothing is happening. We cannot look away.”Oliynykova added that it was impossible to talk about this with Russian players on the women's tour because, she said, they “have these horrible beliefs.”Speaking on Thursday, ahead of their third-round match, she accused Shnaider of liking Russian propaganda posts on social media and vehemently criticized her for playing in a Gazprom-sponsored exhibition tournament in Russia.Oliynykova called Gazprom a company which has been "financing the war crimes," and added that "my home is being attacked by Gazprom money.”After Saturday's match, the No. 25-seeded Shnaider said she had not been aware of Oliynykova's comments.“I haven’t heard anything. I don’t know anything about what she said," she said. "Wasn’t interested at all.”Shnaider was then asked about having participated in a Gazprom-sponsored event.“I’m traveling all year round. I’m not seeing my family or my friends,” she said. “I have only one opportunity to play in front of my family, in front of my friends, just to spend a little more time at home.”Kostyuk's tearsAfter her first-round win, Marta Kostyuk fought back tears when she described how she found out on the morning of the match that a missile almost hit her parents’ home in Ukraine.Kostyuk said she was feeling exhausted after speaking out against the war for so long, but would continue being outspoken and stating her opinion.Oliynykova said she has no choice but to continue speaking out.“This war, it defines my life, because my future is in Ukraine,” she said. "My father, he’s coming back to the army. My boyfriend, he’s a soldier. Everything in my life is defined by war.”___AP tennis: https://apnews.com/hub/tennis

But EA’s track record is why this claim has become such a lively pre-tournament talking point.EA Sports’ World Cup streak is why the Portugal claim has explodedPhoto by Lars Baron/Getty ImagesThe appeal starts with EA’s history. The company predicted Germany to win the 2014 World Cup, and Germany went on to lift the trophy in Brazil.Four years later, EA predicted France to win the 2018 World Cup. France then beat Croatia in the final in Moscow. The streak became even more notable when EA predicted Argentina in 2022. Argentina later won the tournament in Qatar, which gave future EA simulation claims obvious viral power.Portugal are exactly the kind of pick that makes the claim interestingPortugal are not a random name in the 2026 conversation. Their profile, talent pool and tournament pedigree make them the kind of side fans would naturally take seriously. That wider respect has already shown up in the build-up, with Vinicius Jr having named Portugal among the strongest contenders for the next World Cup.There is also wider prediction chatter around Portugal, which shows how quickly their name catches attention. That does not make them certain winners, but it does explain the fascination. The sensible view is simple. Portugal have not been handed the 2026 World Cup by a video game, but EA’s recent streak makes this claimed prediction genuinely hard for fans to ignore.Read more:Liverpool are right to make ruthless Arne Slot call but his legacy should not be rewrittenAnthony Gordon reveals how he managed to speak fluent Spanish at Barcelona unveil despite being EnglishUSMNT boss Mauricio Pochettino draws line over AC Milan rumours

Shedeur Sanders breaks Tom Brady's record, earning a reported $17.7 million in licensing income in 2025
Shedeur Sanders is still battling to become the No. 1 quarterback for the Cleveland Browns, but he has already cemented himself as No. 1 in another area. The Browns quarterback reportedly earned $17.7 million from NFLPA Group Licensing Income in 2025, per Front Office Sports. To put into perspective how much money the then-rookie quarterback earned, the previous earning record was held by Tom Brady. The future Hall of Fame quarterback earned $9.5 million from the NFLPA Group Licensing Income in the 2021-2022 season.Sanders surpassed Brady’s previous record by nearly doubling it. To further show how much the Browns QB earned, J.J. McCarthy led this metric for the 2024-2025 season, taking home $4 million.Play 2026 Soccer Pick 'Em with FOX One and make your picks for the world's biggest soccer tournamentThe former Colorado quarterback is now heading into his second season in the NFL. His rookie year was all but predictable as he was once perceived as a top-two pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, but ended up falling to the fifth round, where the Browns used the 144th overall pick on him.Sanders began his rookie year as the backup to both Joe Flacco and fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel. He finally got the chance to take the field in Week 11 against the Baltimore Ravens and went 4 of 16 passing for 47 yards and an interception after Gabriel left with a concussion. The QB then made his first start in Week 12 against the Las Vegas Raiders, leading the Browns to a 24-10 win. Sanders was 11 of 20 for 209 yards with a touchdown and an interception. All told for his rookie campaign, he finished with 1,400 passing yards, 7 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Sanders started seven games and tallied a 3-4 record. Despite his career getting off to a slow start, the quarterback knew how to market himself, and he was a fan favorite in college thanks to his media presence and his signature celebration, which was mimicked across the sports and entertainment industries. Heading into the 2026-2027 season, Sanders is once again in a position battle vying to be Cleveland’s starter for the team’s Week 1 matchup on the road against the Jacksonville Jaguars. While his focus is on earning that spot over teammate Deshaun Watson, the second-year QB can at least appreciate that he has already set one record through his NFL career.

Diane Parry and the French Open crowd send Amanda Anisimova out of Roland Garros
The Athletic has live coverage of Day 7 at the 2026 French OpenPARIS — Amanda Anisimova had pretty low expectations coming into the French Open. She met them Saturday, as she fell to home hope Diane Parry, who beat her 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(3) in a match that was close until the tiebreak, when Anisimova entirely lost control of her groundstrokes. On a hot afternoon on Court Philippe-Chatrier, Parry, 23, tortured Anisimova with high-bouncing forehands and sliced backhands. Both kept the ball well out of Anisimova’s strike zone, drawing dozens of errors from the 24-year-old American, a two-time Grand Slam finalist last year. When it was over, Parry had her first top-10 win, and some of the chaos that has taken over the men’s draw had seeped into the women’s.Anisimova was always going to come into this match cold. She has been managing an injury to her left wrist the past two months. The French Open was her first clay-court tournament of the season, and her first two matches in Paris didn’t give her much chance to play herself into form. She met little resistance in the first round against Tiantsoa Sarah Rakotomanga Rajaonah, a French wild card. In the second round, her opponent, Julia Grabner of Austria, retired after Anisimova won the first set 6-0. That gave her a little more than two hours of matchplay on clay before one of the toughest Grand Slam tests: Playing a match as a favorite against a French player on the country’s biggest court. The French crowd did all it could to rile Anisimova. As she tossed the ball in the first set for a second serve, what sounded like a fake sneeze emerged from the crowd. Anisimova caught her toss, but then double-faulted and lost the game.Anisimova came back to win the second set, and she unleashed some of her best strokes of an error-strewn day after Parry broke her midway through the third. But with Parry serving at 4-5 and Anisimova two points from the match, she committed two more errors, and Parry smacked her 10th ace of the day, to even the score at 5-5.From there, the match became a test of whether Anisimova could end points quickly or Parry could extend them. Anisimova got to within two points of the finish again, with Parry serving at 5-6, but then muffed a short, low backhand long. On the next point, she went long on a forehand, and on they went to a tiebreak.Parry got out in front from the start, when Anisimova missed on a forehand and never relinquished the lead. Anisimova shanked a serve at 3-6 to give Parry a comfortable cushion, and then her 55th and 56th unforced errors, one a forehand crosscourt, the other a forehand down the line, gave Parry six match points. She only needed one, drawing Anisomova in with a drop shot then blasting a backhand at her from close range. When Anisomova’s volley flew long, the Chatrier throng roared. This article originally appeared in The Athletic.Tennis, Women's Tennis2026 The Athletic Media Company

Brock Purdy was one of the unluckiest QBs in 2025, per PFF
Much has been written about whether or not San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy is good or not. While he's boasted some impressive numbers during his four years with the team, some aren't convinced of his talent.Despite any misgivings from pundits and fans alike, though, the data proved one thing in 2025: Purdy was very unlucky with his throws. According to Pro Football Focus, the 49ers quarterback ranked No. 2 on their unlucky passer scale behind only Geno Smith. Purdy had 4.5 "extra" interceptions that he should have this past year, per PFF.No quarterback in the 2025 dataset was hurt more by interception variance than this one. He produced just 12 turnover-worthy throws all season, yet nine turned into interceptions. The bad breaks extended beyond his turnover-worthy throws, too, as four additional interceptions came on passes that were not deemed turnover-worthy. Nearly every form of interception variance swung against him. His official 95.0 passer rating would have climbed to 100.7 under league-average interception luck. Some of that could be blamed on his lingering issues, or offensive line woes, or bad receiver play. Or it could just be plain bad luck. Whatever the case may be, Purdy proved that not everything was his fault in 2025 and that he's a good candidate for positive regression in 2026. And now that he has a few savvy vets in tow, like Mike Evans and Christian Kirk, perhaps some of those issues that plagued the team in 2025 can be resolved this year. This article originally appeared on Niners Wire: Brock Purdy was one of the unluckiest QBs in 2025, per PFF

Yankees Birthday of the Day: Rube Oldring
Rube Oldring, leftfielder for the Philadelphia Athletics, at bat. In the early, pre-Babe Ruth days of the franchise, the New York Yankees/Highlanders often featured great players who had or would go on to have championship success at the big league level. The issue was often that they just didn’t have the right combination of players, have them at the right age, or didn’t figure out how to correctly use them.Case in point is Rube Oldring, who fits the second of those categories. The three-time World Series champion played the very first and then what would be the penultimate season of his 13-year career with the Yankees. The first time around, he was a victim of circumstance, and the second time around, he was past his best.On what would have been Oldring’s 142nd birthday — were such a thing medically possible — let’s look back at the Yankees and MLB career of the outfielder.Reuben Henry “Rube” OldringBorn: May 30, 1884 (New York, NY)Died: September 9, 1961 (Bridgeton, NJ)Yankees Tenure: 1905, 1916Oldring was born in New York City in 1884, as one of eight children. Like was the story of many of the era, despite being the children of immigrants, Oldring developed a love and skill for baseball, and soon became good enough to play for semi-pro teams all over the New York and New Jersey area. That eventually led him to be discovered by the professional ranks, and the Southern Association’s Montgomery Senators picked him up in 1905.In Alabama, Oldring very quickly impressed, and his contract was purchased by the Philadelphia Athletics by the end of his first season in the pro ranks. Oldring reported to Philadelphia after the deal, but the A’s were in a battle for the American League pennant, and not in a position to try out a rookie. Manager Connie Mack told him to go find some semi-pro games to play in to stay in shape. Oldring did so, leading to a real “only in the early 1900s baseball” story.Oldring went back to New York City and played for a semi-pro team in an exhibition game against the then New York Highlanders. He homered in the game as his team beat the Highlanders, impressing manager Clark Griffith. Despite him having a contract with the A’s, Griffith somehow managed to pick up Oldring, and he played for New York for the rest of the 1905 season. In eight games, he hit an impressive .300/.344/.467, which equated to a 146 OPS+. Impressed by the rookie, Griffith and the Highlanders attempted to sign Oldring for the following year, only for it to emerge that he was signed with the A’s, where he would return for 1906.Impressing in spring training that year, Oldring eventually earned the Athletics’ third base spot in 1906. However, he had a strong arm and a tendency to airmail throws to first base. Mack decided to take advantage of that attribute and moved Oldring to center field, where he would play the majority of his career. After some up and down seasons in his early career, Oldring settled became a key player for the A’s by the time the 1910s began. He had his best career year in 1910, putting up what added up to 4.3 fWAR and a 141 OPS+. He also helped the Athletics become a dynasty of the era, winning World Series titles in 1911 and ‘13. He became a fan favorite in Philadelphia, and even starred in a silent short film called “The Baseball Bug” in 1911.Following an upset loss in the 1914 World Series, Mack began to tear down the A’s, which eventually led the likes of Home Run Baker, Bob Shawkey, and Herb Pennock to ioin the Yankees as they began their ascent. That tear down didn’t include the likes of Oldring at first, but after a slow start to the 1916 season, Philadelphia gave the outfielder his unconditional release. Oldring had already been considering retirement and elected to do that and settle on the farm he had bought with his wife. But later that season, the Yankees convinced Oldring to join them, as they were dealing with a host of outfield injuries. He struggled there too, leading to the Yankees releasing him in September. Mack later got Oldring to return to the A’s for the 1918 season before his major league career ended for good.Oldring would spend some time as a player/manager at various minor league stops before leaving baseball for good after 1923. He settled back in New Jersey, where he lived until his death in 1961.In two separate directions, the Yankees missed out on the best years of Rube Oldring. The Yankees have had plenty of successful player acquisitions over the years, but you can’t win them all.See more of the “Yankees Birthday of the Day” series here.

Ryan Lynch’s gem lifts UNC over VCU in regional opener
North Carolina’s bold pitching decision paid off Friday night.Head coach Scott Forbes turned to regular Saturday starter Ryan Lynch instead of ace Jason DeCaro, and the right-hander delivered seven scoreless innings in No. 5 national seed North Carolina’s 8-0 win over VCU in the opening game of the Chapel Hill Regional. Lynch allowed two hits, struck out five and threw a career-high 108 pitches, putting the Tar Heels in control of the winners bracket.Lynch ended his outing with a flourish. On his 108th pitch, he struck out VCU second baseman Alec Warden on a 96 mph fastball. The punchout capped a dominant performance that arrived at a critical time for a UNC rotation that had struggled to provide length in recent weeks.“I saw that same look in his face as I did late in the season last year,” head coach Scott Forbes said. “I thought he was efficient, and the stuff was just the stuff. I mean, he was throwing cheese.”The start was a sharp turnaround from Lynch’s previous two outings against Pitt and NC State, when he failed to reach the fifth inning and allowed nine runs on 17 hits across 7.1 combined innings. He called last week’s ACC Tournament semifinal start against Pitt “inefficient,” then spent the days leading into the regional working on his delivery to give his team “a better shot.”That work showed from the first inning. Of Lynch’s 17 pitches in the opening frame Friday, 16 were fastballs, touching 99 mph as he struck out two and set the tone. His ability to work deep into the game was exactly what North Carolina needed after its starters combined for only nine innings over three games in Charlotte.“(Jason DeCaro)’s had a great year, but the last couple weeks we haven’t done our job,” Lynch said. “We haven’t gone really long enough, a lot of inefficient outings, not putting our team in the best spot to win.“So I just tried to do whatever I could this week to make sure that wasn’t the case anymore — working on my delivery a little bit more, just seeing what I could do to feel better and give my team a better shot.”Lynch’s outing also sets up UNC well for the rest of the weekend. The Tar Heels will enter Saturday’s winners-bracket matchup against East Carolina with nearly their entire pitching staff available, while the Pirates needed six pitchers — including ace Ethan Norby — to get through a 14-inning win over Tennessee.“The more you can conserve, the better,” Forbes said. “We’re still going to have to do the little things tomorrow… They’re going to show up, they’re going to play hard, and they’re going to be ready to go.”Follow us @TarHeelsWire on X and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of North Carolina Tar Heels news, notes and opinions. This article originally appeared on Tar Heels Wire: UNC Baseball: Ryan Lynch shines in regional win

Rams DB Quentin Lake likes what he's seen from Ty Simpson already
The Los Angeles Rams made the bold decision to draft Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson with the No. 13 overall pick in the 2026 NFL draft. Transitioning to a high-octane offense under head coach Sean McVay isn't easy for a rookie, but, according to Rams veteran safety Quentin Lake, the young signal-caller is navigating the early stages of his pro career remarkably well.Appearing on Underdog's "The Arena: Gridiron," Lake shared his perspective on the rookie’s progression through early offseason workouts. While Lake noted that he hasn’t personally lined up directly across from Simpson in team drills just yet, he has kept a close eye on the baseline intelligence and technical execution the rookie has put on film."He can read the offense," Lake said of Simpson. "Even coming in early, he’s been able to make all the throws that he needs to. Very calculated. I think one of the reasons why they liked him so much is he can anticipate things, too."Quentin Lake talks about what he's seen from Ty Simpson at OTA's 👀 pic.twitter.com/kLuVg06Cqz— The Arena: Gridiron (@ArenaGridiron) May 29, 2026It's very early in Simpson's NFL development, but Lake senses that things are clicking quickly for the Alabama product. He attributes that rapid comfort level to the exceptional infrastructure and personnel surrounding the rookie in Los Angeles."Watching him from afar, he’s getting there. It’s starting to click," Lake said. "And I think it’s because of who he has around him, telling him what to do, what to look at. For Ty, having an MVP quarterback [like Matthew Stafford] is going to help him have that ability."Stafford, to his credit, has already said he's prepared to give Simpson everything he needs to succeed in the L.A.However, while Lake is highly optimistic about Simpson's projectable traits and willingness to learn, he was quick to shut down any premature talent comparisons to Stafford. When pressed on how the rookie's raw arm talent stacks up against the veteran’s legendary arm, Lake laughed before setting a clear boundary."I'm not going to say his arm talent isn't great, but no one—I don't think—the only two people in the league, or three people, maybe four, that have arm talent like Matthew Stafford are Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes, and maybe Justin Herbert," Lake explained. "[Stafford] can throw 60 yards in the air on a dime, every time. No hitch, no nothing... Ty Simpson and Matthew Stafford, although Ty has a great arm, Matthew Stafford is a different breed."This is to be expected when you're comparing a one-year college starter to a 17-year NFL starter. But Simpson will get a front-row seat to one of the best head coach-quarterback duos in the NFL between Stafford and McVay. And, since Stafford is signed under contract for at least another two years, Simpson won't have to be thrust into a starting role unless catastrophe strikes. Panthers may have overlooked 'star' at transformative position
The Carolina Panthers might have themselves a star that no one—well, almost no one—is talking about.NFL.com analyst Bucky Brooks bucked that trend on Friday, as he highlighted the league's top "star" defenders. He writes that these "multi-faceted" players—thanks to their "alpha dawg mentality", coverage skills and pass-rushing skills—have helped defensive coordinators deploy more three-safety looks to combat today's pass-heavy offenses. Brooks ranked who he believes are the top five such presences, and has Carolina safety Tre'von Moehrig rounding out the bunch at No. 5:The 6-2, 202-pound box-area bandit emerged as one of the league’s most dynamic multi-level defenders last season, his first with the Panthers after spending four years with the Raiders. Moehrig's versatility, instincts, awareness and physicality were showcased in a scheme that allowed him to line up all over the field. He took snaps on the defensive line (102 as an on-ball linebacker) and at inside linebacker (276), strong safety (205), free safety (160) and slot cornerback (322). As an ultra-aggressive defender with a knack for making plays in the backfield on blitzes or run-throughs at the line of scrimmage, Moehrig led all defensive backs with 51 stops (tackle that results in a successful play for the defense), tied for second with three sacks and ranked fifth with 14 QB pressures last season, per Next Gen Stats.Moehrig joined the Panthers on a three-year, $51 million deal last spring. Along with his 3.0 sacks, his 14 tackles for a loss in 2025 also marked a new career high.Defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero certainly valued Moehrig's stardom throughout the campaign. Outside of being pulled at the end of three blowouts and serving a one-game suspension, Moehrig played in every single defensive snap for the unit this past season.Joining Moehrig on Brooks' list is Philadelphia's Cooper DeJean, Los Angeles' Derwin James, Houston's Jalen Pitre and Seattle's Nick Emmanwori.Follow @ThePanthersWire on Twitter/X for more Panthers content. This article originally appeared on Panthers Wire: Panthers S Tre'von Moehrig named top 'star' in transformative role

No Suryakumar Yadav in Asian Games longlist; Vaibhav Sooryavanshi among 30 probables
Teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has earned a place in India's 30-member men's cricket probables list for the 2026 Asian Games, while two of the country's biggest stars, T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav and Test and ODI skipper Shubman Gill, are notable absentees. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has submitted the longlist to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) ahead of the Asian Games, scheduled to be held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, from September 19 to October 4.The omission of Gill and Suryakumar is largely linked to India's packed international calendar. The Asian Games cricket competition will overlap with India's home white-ball series against the West Indies, forcing selectors to prepare separate squads for the two assignments.Scheduling Clash Forces Two-Team StrategyIndia's series against West Indies consists of three ODIs and five T20 Internationals, running from September 27 to October 17. With Gill expected to lead India's ODI side during that series, selectors have opted against including him in the Asian Games pool. The cricket competition at the Asian Games is scheduled between September 24 and October 3, creating a significant overlap and necessitating a larger player pool from which two squads can be selected. As a result, the BCCI has prepared a 30-member list featuring players who can be split across both tournaments depending on the final squad requirements. No Place for Suryakumar YadavPerhaps the biggest surprise is the absence of current T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav. The decision suggests that selectors may already be looking ahead to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the next T20 World Cup cycle. With a younger core emerging, Suryakumar's omission indicates that he may no longer be central to India's long-term T20 plans. 131409478Vaibhav Sooryavanshi RewardedOne of the major talking points is the inclusion of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The teenage batting sensation has enjoyed a remarkable rise over the past year from IPL and U19 World Cup and is now firmly on the national selectors' radar.Who Could Lead India? With Gill & Surya unavailable, the captaincy race for the Asian Games squad appears wide open. Shreyas Iyer, Sanju Samson and Tilak Varma are understood to be the leading contenders to lead the side in Japan.Despite the scheduling challenges, several senior players have been included in the pool. Jasprit Bumrah's name features in the list, although he could ultimately be prioritised for the ODI series against West Indies as India continue preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Other notable names include Hardik Pandya, Rishabh Pant, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Arshdeep Singh, Washington Sundar and Nitish Kumar Reddy.Full 30-Member Probables ListYashasvi Jaiswal, Abhishek Sharma, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, Rinku Singh, Tilak Varma, Jasprit Bumrah, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Prasidh Krishna, Varun Chakravarthy, Anukul Roy, Ayush Badoni, Harsh Dubey, Dhruv Jurel, Khaleel Ahmed, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ravi Bishnoi, Shahbaz Ahmed, Shivam Dube, Vipraj Nigam, Harshit Rana, Yash Thakur and Washington Sundar.

US says it disables another commercial ship trying to breach blockade and reach Iran
Pro-government Iranian demonstrators wave Iranian flags and a portrait of the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, right, and his slain father Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a gathering at a square in Tehran, Iran, Friday, May 29, 2026. (AP Photo/Vahid Salemi)2026-05-30T15:29:03Z WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. military has stopped another merchant vessel trying to break through the American blockade of Iranian ports, a U.S. official with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press on Saturday. The Gambia-flagged bulk carrier Lian Star ignored multiple warnings from U.S. forces overnight as it tried to enter an Iranian port, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss military operations. The ship was disabled by U.S. aircraft in the Gulf of Oman and remains adrift there, the official said, adding that U.S. forces have not boarded it.With the latest action, U.S. military has stopped six ships trying to breach the blockade. One was allowed to proceed. The U.S. launched the blockade on April 17 in response to Iran effectively closing the strait after the war began with U.S. and Israeli strikes on Feb. 28. A fragile ceasefire has held since April 7. Now the region and wider world await word on whether a deal is being reached to extend it by 60 days while new talks would be held on Iran’s disputed nuclear program. Events in the Strait of Hormuz between Iran and Oman have shaken the global economy, with shipments of significant amounts of oil, natural gas and related supplies like fertilizer largely stranded, increasing the strain on consumers and food producers. The U.S. blockade seeks to limit Iran’s own shipments and further weaken its access to cash, creating more pain for its long-weakened economy.U.S. President Donald Trump met with advisers on Friday but has yet to decide on whether to move ahead with a deal to extend the ceasefire and reopen the strait. Iran has said the deal had not been finalized.

Bryce Underwood lands on top 25 quarterback list
Michigan football hopes that with Kyle Whittingham leading the charge, Jason Beck overseeing the offense, and Koy Detmer Jr. leading the quarterback room, the pass game can be revamped in Ann Arbor. But seeing is believing, and we won't know for certain Bryce Underwood's improvement until he takes the field on September 5 against Western Michigan. But some have faith that as Underwood enters his second year in college football, he's rise sharply up the ranks. You can include Sporting News' Bill Bender among those who believe.Bender put together a ranking of the top 25 quarterbacks in college football entering the 2026 season, and he listed Underwood as the No. 23 quarterback overall.23. Bryce Underwood, Michigan 2025 stats: 2,428 yards, 60.3%, 11 TDs, 9 INTs; 392 rushing yards, 6 TDs Underwood – a 6-foot-4, 228-pound sophomore – moves up two spots from last season. That might not be the expected jump from Michigan fans, but consistency was an issue in a season where Underwood had six games with less than 200 passing yards. He had an 86.4 passer rating with two TDs and four interceptions against ranked teams. The good news? Underwood gets a reset with new coach Kyle Whittingham and offensive coordinator Jason Beck, which should unlock more of that five-star talent in Year 2. That would be a solid development for the Wolverines if Underwood were the 23rd-best quarterback in the country, even if expectations for his trajectory are ultimately higher than that. The former No. 1 recruit in the country, Underwood reportedly didn't get a lot of coaching in his freshman year, which tamped down immediate expectations from many analysts regionally and nationally. But players tend to improve year over year, especially going from year one to year two, and with Beck's innovative offense, the pressure shouldn't be on Underwood to carry the offense. His ranking is the good news, but others' rankings are the bad news. The 2026 schedule features several other quarterbacks that Michigan will see, including No. 24 Rocco Becht (Penn State), No. 22 John Mateer (Oklahoma), No. 11 Josh Hoover (Indiana), No. 6 Dante Moore (Oregon), and No. 5 Julian Sayin (Ohio State). This article originally appeared on Wolverines Wire: Michigan QB Bryce Underwood ranked in top 25 list

Tim Ream's long road leads to USMNT World Cup captaincy — 'This is more than a dream come true'
Tim Ream, who has worn the captain’s armband more than any other U.S. player under Mauricio Pochettino, was named the team’s World Cup captain Saturday.“I am so grateful that he is with us because [he is] a great captain not only on the field, [but] maybe more important off the field,” Pochettino said. “I think he has the experience and he has the capacity to be the leader that we want — the positive leader.”Pochettino and his staff made the decision — unlike before the 2022 tournament, when, under then coach Gregg Berhalter, the players voted for midfielder Tyler Adams.“This is more than a dream come true,” Ream said, holding back tears. “I've done everything possible to be a part of this group, to help this group along, and I'm just really, really grateful to be sitting here to have this honor.”Adams said this week he would be happy for whoever was chosen.“It's a privilege and an honor for anyone that gets to wear the armband, but what I represent, how I lead, I think anybody that plays with me knows that I'm a leader,” he said. “That's just how I've been my entire career, whether I'm wearing the armband or not.”At 38, Ream would become the oldest player in U.S. history to appear in a World Cup match. He started all four matches at the 2022 tournament in Qatar.Pochettino reiterated Ream’s importance to the team behind the scenes and with younger players.“Sometimes captains on the field [are] very good, very happy, so nice, so helpful, but after, when they don't play, they don't act like a captain,” Pochettino said. “He fully deserves [the captaincy]. It's not a vote of the teammates; it's my decision, it's our decision, and the people that I trust, and I think it is the best for our team and it's the best for the organization.”Pochettino made a point of adding that being captain does not necessarily guarantee a starting job every match.“Playing or not playing, he is the captain, [but] it’s not going to be sure [he’s] in the starting 11,” Pochettino said, laughing.Ream is among five center backs on the roster, along with the injured Chris Richards, Auston Trusty, Mark McKenzie and Miles Robinson.Since his 2010 international debut, Ream has made 80 U.S. appearances — second on the current squad behind Christian Pulisic (84).

Wigan outclass Hull KR for 22nd Challenge Cup title
Bevan French was set to be missing until early July having suffered a hamstring injury in March [SWPix]Betfred Challenge Cup finalWigan (10) 40Tries: Farrimond 2, Nsemba, Keighran 2, French, Thompson Goals: Keighran 6Hull KR (4) 10Tries: Hiku 2 Goal: MartinBevan French scored on his return from a hamstring injury as Wigan Warriors earned their 22nd Challenge Cup title by thrashing Hull KR at a sweltering Wembley Stadium.French had been absent since March with a hamstring injury and was expected to be out for four months but marked an early return to action from the bench with a try 15 minutes from time, which put the gloss on Wigan's victory.Earlier, Jack Farrimond's sensational solo try got Wigan off the mark and he repeated the feat to extend their lead before Peta Hiku responded for Hull KR.Wigan took control after the break, scoring 30 points, when Junior Nsemba dotted down and Adam Keighran scored a quickfire pair of tries. Hiku went in at the corner to pull KR into double figures, but Luke Thompson raced in as Wigan capped off their win in style.Wigan finished the match with 12 players, however, as Sam Walters put in a dangerous tackle on Bill Leyland with two minutes remaining. The meeting, a repeat of last season's Super League Grand Final, means Wigan pick up their first trophy since their quadruple-winning 2025 campaign, having been shut out by KR's treble last term.KR, for their part, were unable to offer a comeback as talismanic stand off Mikey Lewis suffered what appeared to be a foot injury in the first half.Wigan's victory marks a historic double - with the women's team also beating fierce rivals St Helens in the Women's Challenge Cup final earlier on Saturday - the first time a side has won both trophies on the same day since the finals were grouped together at Wembley in 2023.The Warriors took an early lead to lay down a marker of what was to come. Farrimond received Brad O'Neill's pass and dummied and weaved his way through the Hull KR defence to score.Keighran swung what should have been a simple conversion wide, however, and an attritional first half then played out in temperatures approaching 30 degrees celsius.Hull KR suffered a blow when Lewis picked up his injury midway through the half, but he carried on playing.Yet he was a passenger as Wigan made a moment of pressure count, as Farrimond ran in, with Lewis unable to offer much in the way of defence as he was plagued by his foot injury.Out of nowhere Hull KR hit back right on the verge of half-time as Tyrone May's sublime kick was met by Hiku, who could not believe his luck as he saw that he was able to run in virtually unopposed.Yet Rhyse Martin - who had been deployed from the bench in the early stages due to a head injury to Dean Hadley - hit the post while trying to add the extras.Wigan opened up their lead to 12 points just four minutes into the second half as Hull KR struggled from a high ball, and Farrimond continued his fine showing for the day as he sent a perfect kick through for Nsemba to catch and ground.Another Wigan kick led to another try, this time as Harry Smith chipped in for Keighran to run in through a Hull KR defensive gap to score and the Australian was in again soon after as he scooped up a pass and outpaced KR again.French made the difference moments after coming on to cap off a remarkable comeback, but there was still time for Hiku to race to the corner and Thompson to stun the Robins further before the hooter.Wigan: Field; Eckersley, Keighran, Wardle, Hodkinson; Farrimond, Smith; Walters, O'Neill, Thompson, Nsemba, Farrell, Partington.Interchanges: Havard, Ellis, Mago, French.Hull KR: Broadbent; Davies, Hiku, Gildart, Burgess; Lewis, May; Sue, Litten, Amone, Hadley, Batchelor, Minchella.Interchanges: Leyland, Luckley, Martin, Brown.Referee: Liam Moore

🚨 CL title before Nagelsmann? Germany star strikes early in final
🚨 CL title before Nagelsmann? Germany star strikes early in finalThat was really quick! Arsenal took the lead against PSG in the Champions League final after just six minutes. From a German perspective, there was plenty to cheer about, as Kai Havertz scored to make it 1-0 for the Gunners. However, the Premier League club also had a bit of luck. Marquinhos hit Trossard with a clearance in midfield, and from there the ball bounced perfectly into Havertz’s path. The Germany international then drove into the box from the left and finished superbly: from a very tight angle, he smashed the ball over the PSG keeper’s shoulder and in under the crossbar.Let’s see how PSG respond to this early shock. Todd Blackledge predicts 'solid' Michigan season
Todd Blackledge, NBC's primary college football color commentator, visited Ann Arbor this spring and got a bit of a sneak preview of what Michigan football might be this season. And now that he's digested much of what he's seen, not just with the Wolverines but also with other teams, he has a feeling that the maize and blue might be better than anticipated. He had some thoughts on Bryce Underwood's potential emergence as a star player in college football, but he also thinks that some of the players around him are going to help the team quite a bit in 2026.Appearing on the Y-Option podcast with Yogi Roth, Blackledge broke down the state of the offense outside of Underwood, noting that there are a lot more playmakers wearing winged helmets this year than in the previous few seasons."Well, I think they're going to be good, OK. And you know, now how good? I don't know, but I think they're going to be good," Blackledge said. "I think they're going to be solid. I think they're going to run the football. You know, they've got an offensive line coming back with four or five guys that have a lot of experience, starting experience. They're better at run blocking than they are at pass blocking. But I think the running back position is going to be one of the real strengths, with the return of Jordan Marshall. And then Savion Hiter is a true freshman who looks like a grown man. I mean, they are going to be really solid at the running back position. "Wide receiver is a position I think is going to be a strength this year. Andrew Marsh was their best guy coming back. They've also got Kendrick Bell, Channing Goodwin that are returners, but they brought in a couple transfers. Jaime Ffrench from Texas, JJ Buchanan came from Utah. So I think that's going to be a really solid position for them."Tight end is not as strong as it's been in the past. But still some guys. But I think this offensively, this is a team that is going to be able to run the football and utilize the skill set of Bryce Underwood. And I really like when you watch what Jason Beck does offensively in his playcalling. They put a lot of pressure on you because they're going to always try to read somebody. There's always going to be a quarterback run tied in, you know, backside of something they're running frontside. They use a lot of multiple-personnel groups. They'll use six offensive linemen, sometimes seven offensive linemen. So they're really giving you a lot of different looks to run the football. And again, the numbers at Utah last year and at New Mexico the years before that, as good as anybody in college football in terms of total offense."That's the offense, but Kyle Whittingham has been insistent that the defense is the stronger unit, led by the defensive line. That was evident in the annual spring game, as the defense held the offense, on both teams, to just 13 points. And with that, Blackledge thinks not enough people are giving credit to Whittingham for bringing Jay Hill over after having spent the past four seasons in Provo."I really enjoyed visiting with Jay Hill, the defensive coordinator," Blackledge said. "Jay came from BYU. But he played for Kyle at Utah, you know, so he's got ties with both schools. But they, he is an aggressive guy. They're gonna be more man-to-man coverage. They already had Zeke Berry and Jyaire Hill coming back at corner."And you mentioned John Henry Daley coming, one of the best edge guys in college football. Smith Snowden was another key guy who came from Utah, because they're gonna play a lot of three cornerbacks. And that gives them three guys that are really capable of playing a lot of man coverage. So it'll be an aggressive, attacking kind of defense under Jay Hill with a lot of man coverage."Blackledge got the early, first look at the maize and blue, and he'll get the first real look in the season, as well. He'll be on the call for Michigan's season opener against Western Michigan on September 5, as the game will be broadcast ta 7:30 p.m. EDT on NBC.This article originally appeared on Wolverines Wire: Todd Blackledge sees potential in Michigan football

Lamar Jackson reveals his favorite new Ravens look
The Ravens unveiled updated uniforms this offseason, and while players haven't worn them in a game yet, Lamar Jackson already has a favorite. Asked about the new look following OTA practice, the Ravens quarterback admitted he's still evaluating the different combinations but said one uniform has already separated itself from the pack."I don't have a favorite yet, because we haven't worn them in a game, but I like them all so far."After thinking about it for a moment, Jackson quickly changed his answer."Nope, I lied. Black might be my favorite, then purple."The two-time MVP said one of the things he likes most is the updated look of Baltimore's purple jersey."I like the metallic type of purple on the jersey."While Jackson has a leader-in-the-clubhouse, he said his opinion could still change once the Ravens take the field this season."I don't know. We'll have to find out later on."The Ravens' uniform refresh has generated plenty of excitement among fans throughout the offseason, and Jackson's endorsement of the black jerseys is likely to make that look even more popular heading into the 2026 season. As for whether black remains his favorite once the games begin, Jackson plans to let the season decide. This article originally appeared on Ravens Wire: Lamar Jackson picks his favorite new Ravens uniform

OKC restaurant 'The Goose' changes menu ahead of Game 7 to mock Victor Wembanyama, Spurs
Sometimes, a home team needs to know that their city is behind them for the biggest game of their season so far. The Oklahoma City Thunder will take on the San Antonio Spurs in Game 7 of the Western Conference Finals on Saturday night, with the winner advancing to meet the New York Knicks in the NBA Finals. A deli in the Midtown district of Oklahoma City has opted to change its menu for Saturday and has made it very clear that it is backing its hometown team. While the menu is usually riddled with standard sandwich combinations you would find in a deli, the sandwich shop's in-person menu has been completely overhauled with brand-new names.Play 2026 Soccer Pick 'Em with FOX One and make your picks for the world's biggest soccer tournamentThe store is known for its signature sandwich, “The Goose,” an Italian sandwich with capicola, mortadella, salami, pepperoni, asiago, lemon-tossed arugula, Duke’s mayo, olive oil and red wine vinaigrette, served on ciabatta bread. This item has been renamed “Victor Wembanyama Sucks” for Saturday. There is also a “Victor Wembanyama Really Sucks,” a “Julian Champagnie Sucks,” “Stephon Castle Sucks,” and let’s not forget the “BTW Victor Wembanyama Still Sucks.” The sandwiches are also not only “insert player X + sucks.” There is a “No Nun-Sense,” a shot at the viral Salesian Sisters, who supported the Spurs in Games 4 and 6 in San Antonio. There is a “French Guy Terrible,” a “Thunder in 7,” and a “The Chet Cheese” included on the re-worked menu. The Goose has also said that any Thunder player who stops in would be able to eat for free. While fans outside of OKC may want to take a look at the new menu items, the updates are only visible in person and have not been reflected in The Goose’s online ordering system. The Thunder and Spurs tip off at 8 p.m. ET on NBA and Peacock. The Goose is certainly doing its part to rally the hometown fans, and if the game goes OKC’s way, it will likely start scheming up puns for when the Knicks come to town if the Thunder can advance.

How Bears WR Luther Burden is positioning himself for breakout year
The Chicago Bears have no shortage of weapons in head coach Ben Johnson's offense, but there's one name that continues to come up amid breakout potential conversation -- wide receiver Luther Burden III.The former second-round pick showed his speed, versatility and playmaking potential in a limited role last season, but following the departure of veteran DJ Moore, Burden is gearing up for an extended role opposite Rome Odunze. Johnson sang Burden's praises this week at OTAs, saying he's "buying Luther Burden stock," which is certainly noteworthy from one of the NFL's best offensive minds."He looks like he's playing at a different speed right now," Johnson said. "And you knew he had it in him. He's a 4.4 guy, and yet, those time speeds don't always translate to real speed, football speed, the game tape – and so I think we're starting to see that now he's playing, he's not thinking as much, and he knows what we're trying to do."Burden is poised for a massive breakout year amid Chicago's collective group of weapons, featuring last year's standout rookie tight end Colston Loveland and receiver Rome Odunze. So what has Burden been doing to put himself in a position to take that next step?"I was just here," Burden said. "Working, working, working. Ballon d'Or rankings 2026: Top candidates, potential award winners with Harry Kane, Lamine Yamal favourites originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.Widely considered the most coveted individual award in football, the Ballon d'Or remains a highly anticipated event each year.Handed out annually in October to the best player in world football the previous season, the Ballon d'Or is the pinnacle of individual football achievement, and it's a the dream of every top player in the world to be honored at the gala. After Ousmane Dembele won the 2025 Ballon d'Or for leading Paris Saint-Germain to its first-ever European title, all the top performers are hoping to register a strong season in their own attempt to hoist the famous trophy. The Sporting News takes a detailed look at who leads the race for the 2026 Ballon d'Or award, and who could be in the mix at the end of the season and after the FIFA World Cup to come in the summer.MORE:A look back at the 2025 Ballon d'Or gala as it happened, and a full list of resultsBallon d'Or rankings 2026: Top candidates, potential award winnersHere are the top 10 players in contention for the Ballon d'Or, ranked by how The Sporting News would hand out the award if the season were to end now.A reminder that performances and outcome at the 2026 World Cup will be considered when voting for the 2026 Ballon d'Or, and will go a long way towards determining the eventual winner. In fact, it will likely be the determining factor, as you will see a consistent theme in the analysis below. With many of the top contenders falling short in the Champions League, it leaves everything to be decided at the FIFA tournament this summer.Rankings, stats, and assessments updated following the final day of domestic club football on Sunday, May 24.MORE:A deep dive explaining why Raphinha should have won the 2025 Ballon d'Or10) Erling Haaland (CF, Man City)There is always a place for the Premier League Golden Boot winner on this list, as the player with the most goals in the most visible — and deepest — league in the world is always a top-performing individual.Yet Erling Haaland's candidacy for the 2026 Ballon d'Or is on life support. While the Norwegian began the season on fire, scoring 14 goals in his first 11 Premier League matches, the output fell off a cliff through the second half. From January 1 to April 12 he had scored just three goals from open play in all competitions. By the time he recovered his form with five goals in their last seven games, Man City had already fallen behind in the league title race. While his season-long numbers leave him in contention for now, Man City's early exit from the Champions League has left Haaland with very little opportunity to recover his standing. He will need a strong performance at the World Cup with Norway to have any chance at rising up the standings and winning the award. The game-winning goal against Arsenal in mid-April temporarily revived his conversation, but they could not capitalise, and he needs a big mid-summer FIFA tournament to have a shot.MORE:A look at the top goal scorers in the 2025/26 Champions League tournamentErling Haaland stats 2025/26CompetitionGamesGoalsAssistsPremier League35278FA Cup431EFL Cup300UEFA Champions League1080TOTAL523899) Bruno Fernandes (CM, Manchester United)It's highly unlikely that a player without European football could win this award, but Bruno Fernandes deserves a place on the list after his exceptional Premier League season.Fernandes set the Premier League single-season record for assists, and he deserved the mark, as his 137 chances created over the course of the campaign were over 50 more than any other player in the English top flight. It was an outrageous season-long performance from Fernandes which returned Man United to Champions League qualification, but he did so while navigating the fewest fixtures in a United season since the 1910's.In order for Fernandes to be in true contention for this award, he will likely have to win the World Cup with Portugal, but he deserves a place amongst the top 10 as long as they don't disappoint this summer in North America.Bruno Fernandes stats 2025/26CompetitionGamesGoalsAssistsPremier League35921FA Cup101EFL Cup100TOTAL379228) Vitinha (CM, Paris Saint-Germain)At his very best, Vitinha is undoubtedly one of the three finest midfielders in the world. The 26-year-old's performances down the stretch of the 2024/25 season saw him rocket up the Ballon d'Or list, where he finished an impressive third.Vitinha is astonishingly press-resistant in possession and can pass as well as anyone around the world, able to unlock opponents anywhere on the pitch. He can also snipe a goal from long range, as he has shown consistently on the European stage this season. The problem for Vitinha this season, as well as any PSG player, has been their inconsistency in league play. While the Parisians have remained a force in Europe looking to defend their Champions League crown, they looked vulnerable at various points in Ligue 1 action. Yet Luis Enrique effectively battled fixture congestion with heavy rotation in domestic matches, and still finished six points clear at the summit of the standings. With PSG now confirmed as domestic title winners and back in the Champions League final, it has put all Parisians back int the thick of the Ballon d'Or conversation. If he helms a deep run for Portugal at the World Cup this summer, his candidacy for this award will likely continue moving back upwards, following a top-three finish in 2025.Vitinha stats 2025/26CompetitionGamesGoalsAssistsLigue 12917Copue de France100Trophee des Champions101UEFA Champions League1661UEFA Super Cup101TOTAL497107) Kylian Mbappe (CF, Real Madrid)Kylian Mbappe has been the world's best forward for a number of years now, and sooner or later it should translate into a Ballon d'Or. Yet to this point, the French superstar has been unable to secure such a trophy. So far, Mbappe has not managed to compile a complete season-long resume, one with both individual stardom and team success. At the close of March, that all seemed like it was still in front of him. Back from injury, Mbappe was chasing Cristiano Ronaldo's single-season Champions League goal-scoring record, all while leading the La Liga scoring charts as Real Madrid went back-and-forth with Barcelona atop the standings. Considering France are one of the top contenders for the World Cup later this summer, it was all on the table for Mbappe. Then, it all came crashing down in April. First, Madrid slipped quickly out of the La Liga title race as Barcelona took command, and then both Spanish giants were eliminated from the Champions League in the quarterfinals. The abysmal public image of Mbappe's Madrid — after the damaging locker room reports through the end of the season — likely means a Ballon d'Or is out of the question for Mbappe unless he leads France to another World Cup title, which could reinvigorate his candidacy after another individually productive club season that goes down as a failure on the team level.Kylian Mbappe stats 2025/26CompetitionGamesGoalsAssistsLa Liga31255Copa del Rey121Supercopa de Espana100UEFA Champions League11151TOTAL444276) Gabriel Magalhaes (CB, Arsenal)Regardless of your thoughts on how Arsenal have gone about pushing for trophies this season, there is no denying that Gabriel Magalhaes is at the heart of this season's biggest tactical innovation and narrative. As Mikel Arteta changes the way top teams view set-pieces as an asset, Gabriel is at the core of his entire tactical approach to the 2025/26 season. Not only is Gabriel the main target on all of Arsenal's dead-ball plays, but he also remains the keystone to Arsenal's defensive setup, which has led the way in their push for titles on multiple fronts.Simply put, Arsenal have the best defence in all of Europe and the world. It may not be exciting to watch, but Arteta has — as any coach would — put the most weight on the shoulders of his best players: Gabriel and his centre-back partner William Saliba. No defender in the entire world is relied upon more than these two, and they have consistently performed at such a level, in every possible manner: passing, tackling, positioning, transition defending, and even putting their bodies on the line in front of goal.Add in Gabriel's attacking threat on set-pieces, and he is en route to compiling one of the greatest centre-back club seasons this generation has seen, having secured the Premier League title and now 90 minutes away from a European crown. Anyone without the Brazilian on their Ballon d'Or list this season is simply chasing goals and assists without looking at the whole picture. Yet for him to even have a shot at rising further up the list, he must lead the Selecao back to World Cup glory, which feels like a longshot at this point.Gabriel stats 2025/26CompetitionGamesGoalsAssistsPremier League3234FA Cup200EFL Cup500UEFA Champions League1111TOTAL50456) Pedri (CM, Barcelona)Widely considered the best midfielder in the world — or at the very least top three — Pedri has been at the heart of Barcelona's youthful generation. The 23-year-old has been a star performer in the middle of the pitch, especially when it comes to breaking down opponents, with his passing range considered top among his peers.Yet it's not just sensational vision with the ball at his feet that makes Pedri such a delightful and productive player. He can also dazzle on the ball himself, dancing past opponents in midfield before picking out teammates in the final third. This day and age, it's exceedingly hard for a midfielder without a hefty goals or assists total to win the Ballon d'Or, but not impossible. Unfortunately for Pedri, either a World Cup title or a Champions League crown would do him little in this regard, given Lamine Yamal is his teammate on both fronts and would likely gain most of the plaudits in either scenario. As such, his chances of winning the Ballon d'Or are slim to none, especially with Barcelona crashing out of the Champions League in the quarterfinals, but his presence near the top of the voting chart would be well deserved.Pedri stats 2025/26CompetitionGamesGoalsAssistsLa Liga2929Copa del Rey300Supercopa de Espana201UEFA Champions League902TOTAL432124) Declan Rice (CM, Arsenal)While criticism runs amok for how Arsenal have played throughout this season, there is one player who has remained largely immune to the larger tactical narrative: Declan Rice.Back in January, the superstar midfielder became the fifth-youngest player to reach 300 Premier League appearances, and consistency is the name of his game. Rice has excelled at everything a No. 8 is asked to do — which is a lot. He is near the top of the Premier League in accurate passes (98th percentile for central midfielders), final-third passes (98th), shot assists (98th), crossing accuracy (97th), long balls (96th), tackles (88th), interceptions (90th), ball recoveries (96th), clearances (97th), blocks (91st), aerial duels (92nd), and shots (85th) according to ScoutingStats. What more do you want?Being a midfielder who doesn't rely solely on statistical production for global accolades, a possible Ballon d'Or win for Rice almost certainly starts and ends with England winning a World Cup this summer. Making that difficult for the Arsenal midfielder is the fact he plays on the same team as Harry Kane, who has positioned himself even closer to the top of this list and would likely benefit most from a similar outcome this season, rendering Rice's candidacy moot. Rice benefitted from Arsenal closing out the Premier League title, and probably needs to win the Champions League crown too to have a realistic shot at winning this award over his international teammate.Even if Rice is unlikely to win just by way of his position and lack of flashy production, he should finish amongst the top vote-getters regardless for his exceptional season.Declan Rice stats 2025/26CompetitionGamesGoalsAssistsPremier League3647EFL Cup602UEFA Champions League1212TOTAL545113) Michael Olise (RW, Bayern Munich)After being under-appreciated throughout a stellar first season with Bayern Munich, Michael Olise has finally become a talking point across the European narrative in the 2025/26 season.Nobody in Europe has been more explosive creating chances in the attacking third for teammates, as he leads the continent in assists across all competitions throughout the top five leagues while also scoring a healthy amount of his own. Olise is third in expected assists in the Champions League behind Mohamed Salah (!!) and Julian Alvarez, and he has the second-most carries that end with a shot of anyone as well. Domestically, Olise is just one assist behind Thomas Muller's Bundesliga record of 21 in a single campaign and has plenty of time to eclipse that. For Olise to win the Ballon d'Or (and Kane as well), he likely needs to help Bayern Munich to a Champions League title; it's the only way to validate the bloated Bundesliga numbers, which are always taken with a grain of salt given the league's propensity to favour attacking play.Olise finally got the worldwide attention he deserved with a starring role across the two Champions League quarterfinal legs against Real Madrid, but after scoring in the wild first leg of the their semifinal matchup against PSG, his disappearance in the second leg as Bayern collapsed at home was damaging to his candidacy.A leading role in a World Cup push with France could then put him over the top and set him apart from teammate Kane, but there are so many world-class superstars in this France attack, he likely would need to be the main character in a title run to win the award.Michael Olise stats 2025/26CompetitionGamesGoalsAssistsBundesliga321521DFB-Pokal623DFL-Supercup100UEFA Champions League1357TOTAL5222312) Lamine Yamal (RW, Barcelona)At present, nobody's star power is greater than 18-year-old Lamine Yamal, who has the world of football at his feet. While he does not yet produce the kind of flashy goal-scoring numbers that either Mbappe or Kane are logging, that has not mattered. Despite putting up just 18 goals and 25 assists in the 2024/25 season, numbers well behind the others in contention — including his teammate Raphinha — he finished second in the voting as the world was captivated by his story. His star continues to shine brighter this season, as he is on pace to eclipse last year's numbers all while leading Barcelona to new heights. The Blaugrana sit atop the La Liga table and were well in contention for the Champions League title... until suddenly the European campaign went belly-up against Atletico Madrid.Lamine was in firm control of the Ballon d'Or race early on, but with Barcelona bowing out of the Champions League earlier than expected, his candidacy now fully relies on Spain's performance in the United States at the World Cup, where an injury threatens to cut his time at the tournament down. He may need to win the FIFA title, or at least win the Golden Ball in a losing performance, to have a shot.MORE:Lamine Yamal is the most "next Messi" player we've ever seenLamine Yamal stats 2025/26CompetitionGamesGoalsAssistsLa Liga281612Copa del Rey522Supercopa de Espana200UEFA Champions League1064TOTAL4524181) Harry Kane (CF, Bayern Munich)Now 32 years old, Kane has flourished at Bayern Munich. He finally broke his trophy drought last season by winning the Bundesliga title and has somehow managed to hit an even higher gear in 2025/26.Bayern have pummeled the competition this season, winning 22 of their first 27 league games, with Kane scoring 31 goals so far. At this current pace, he could threaten Robert Lewandowski's single-season Bundesliga record of 41 goals, set in 2020/21, the season many believe the Polish star should have won the Ballon d'Or had it not been cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, he is leading a Bayern attack that has shattered the single-season Bundesliga goal-scoring record, breaking the previous mark of 100 with seven matches still to be played.Yet for Kane, everything will come down to the Champions League and the World Cup. Given that Bundesliga performances rarely sway voters much given the league's reputation as attacking-rich, he will likely need one — maybe both — of those titles to make a serious case for the award. Kane must prove that his goal-scoring flurry will translate to either the European stage or the international stage if he is to finally lift this individual trophy. Dembele managed it last year, able to couple his exceptional Ligue 1 haul with a Champions League title, so is it Kane's turn next?Kane could have had his candidacy damaged by Bayern Munich's semifinal exit from the Champions League at the hands of PSG, but right now, there's nobody that has the body of work (61 goals across all competitions!) to leap front him on the list, especially after bagging a hat-trick in the German cup final on the last day of their club season. If he has a big World Cup with England, it could leave him standing atop his list.Harry Kane stats 2025/26CompetitionGamesGoalsAssistsBundesliga31365DFB-Pokal6100DFL-Supercup110UEFA Champions League13142TOTAL51617Other players in the Ballon d'Or mixWhile the above individuals make up the 10 most deserving players as the season currently stands, there are still a number who could potentially make a run at the award or finish high on the list of deserving contenders.Last year's winner Ousmane Dembele is a notable absentee from this list, as he has not been able to match his winning form of last season as he shares more of the attacking load with fellow PSG stars like Desire Doue and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. But do not count the French forward out, as he is likely the first man off the list right now. He used a strong second half last time around to propel his candidacy forward, and is looking to make a similar charge having scored five goals in the final three Champions League matches before the final against Liverpool and Bayern Munich. A big World Cup could see him vault quickly up the rankings. While Raphinhawas massively disrespected at the 2025 Ballon d'Or awards, he has regressed somewhat this season with Lamine Yamal's star power consuming the Barcelona front line. Despite that, he remains a top attacker in the world and, like Dembele, a big summer with Brazil could lift his candidacy back to last year's levels. It remains difficult for defenders to not only crack this list but be considered for the award itself, but there are a few others besides Gabriel who are having world-class seasons and deserve mentioning. Achraf Hakimi is still the best full-back in the world, while Gabriel's Arsenal partner William Saliba is also a top contender for mention.Real Madrid's tough season have sunk many of their contenders. Vinicius Jr. is miles from a spot on this list, only able to rescue his candidacy with a big World Cup, while Federico Valverde scuppered an exceptional season after his dressing room scuffle with Aurelien Tchouanmeni.

Former Blue Jay track stars doing big things at the next level
May 30—JAMESTOWN — The 2026 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Outdoor Championships looked a lot like a 2022 Jamestown High School track and field meet."One of my favorite things is when I get to go to a meet where Yolanda (Nabwe), Julia (Skari) and Allysah (Larson) are competing," said Bernadette Belzer, a Jamestown High School Class of 2023 grad. "It makes me so happy to see them succeed and have those connections. Those girls will always be my teammates."Belzer, Skari and Larson along with Hunter Petersen, a JHS Class of 2022 alum, competed at the NSIC Outdoor Championships on May 7-9."This season made me love track even more because of the memories, experiences and growth that came with it," said Skari, a freshman at Northern State. "Competing alongside supportive teammates, hitting personal records and being part of bigger meets made the season exciting and rewarding, and it gave me even more motivation for the future to get more personal records and achievements."Skari said one of her biggest goals this year was simply to compete and give her best effort."I wanted to push myself, improve throughout the season, and get some new personal records," Skari said. "I definitely feel like I achieved those goals as I gave it my all for my first collegiate season, and also achieved many personal records throughout the season. The NSIC Conference was an amazing experience and a great way to end the season."At the NSIC Championships, Northern's women's 4-by-100 relay team placed sixth and the 4-by 400 relay team placed eighth. The Northern State 4-by-100 relay team posted a time of 47.55 seconds. In the 1600 meter relay, Skari and her teammates completed the four laps in 4:02.Individually, Skari posted a personal record in the 100 hurdles, placing 11th. She also ran a personal record in the 400 hurdles. Her time of 1:04.72 placed her 12th overall."Both events ended with me placing higher than I was originally ranked, which made the experience even more rewarding and showed how much growth and hard work paid off throughout the season," Skari said. "My freshman season could not have gone any better. I absolutely love the team, school and friends there."Skari was hurdling alongside Belzer."My prelims race in the 400 hurdles barely got me into the last seed in finals, but I knew that the next day I'd have one more race and was able to give it my all," Belzer said. "I ended up moving into sixth place and had an all-time PR (personal record), which felt like a great way to end my season."Belzer ran a 1:02.11 at the conference meet."This season went really well for me," Belzer said. "I accomplished a lot of my goals and learned a lot from my experiences. I was able to get stronger and faster, and consistently build all season long by putting in lots of hard work and dedication. ... I honestly can say now that I am just so grateful every time I get to set foot on that track, and truly just have so much fun when I get the opportunity to compete. People might think I'm crazy when I say I'm excited to go run the 400 hurdles, but I really can't get enough of them."Belzer just completed her third season with the Marauders."I am truly am blessed with the best team ever that feels like a family," Belzer said. "It is pretty special when it doesn't matter if it's a pole vaulter, thrower, 10K runner or a decathlete, they all will cheer for every single person like they're a family member. To feel so supported by every member on your team roster is such a special feeling, and it is something that I will never take for granted. Track and field is such an individual sport, but when everyone comes together, that is what makes you love the sport and the people."Larson has had the privilege of competing for two NSIC teams. As a freshman, the JHS Class of 2024 grad competed with the University of Minnesota-Duluth. This season, she is competing at the University of Minnesota State-Moorhead. Larson is the current Jamestown High School record holder in long and triple jump.At the conference championships, Larson placed fourth in the long jump with a jump of 19 feet, 0.75 inches. In triple jump, the sophomore's mark landed at the 37 feet, 9.25-inch mark. She finished fourth in the triple jump."My main goals this season were to set a personal best in long jump and continue improving in triple jump," Larson said. "In long jump, I was able to reach a new PR at 19'0.75", which felt like a big step forward after last season. In triple jump, my goal was consistency and continued growth, and I ended up breaking my school record, which was a huge highlight of my season."Larson said her greatest accomplishment of the season was breaking the school's triple jump record."It was really special to break a record that had stood for a long time, and it made all the hard work feel worth it," Larson said. "This was definitely my best season yet. I got a lot faster and stronger this year, which really helped me on the runway, and I exceeded a lot of my personal goals by more than I expected. ... What's exciting too is that now I get the chance to keep pushing myself and hopefully continue improving that record in the future."Larson was competing with Petersen at the jumps. Petersen has been with the Dragons since the 2022-23 season. To end her college career, the senior placed fifth in high jump with a jump of 5 feet, 5 inches."It was a beautiful day to jump, it was awesome and honestly, I just had so much fun," Petersen said. "There was no pressure. I ended attempting 5-06 again and didn't get it but I got on the podium. It was a special moment and super fun."A week after the four former Blue Jays completed their track and field seasons, Yolanda and Annie Nabwe took the stage at the Summit League and Big Ten Outdoor Championships.Yolanda, a redshirt sophomore for North Dakota State University, placed first in the heptathlon with 5,308 points and seventh in the long jump with a jump of 19 feet, 0.5 inches.Annie, a redshirt junior at the University of Minnesota, won the hammer throw competition with a mark of 69.22 meters. She also placed second in the shot put with a throw of 18 meters. In discus, she placed third, throwing 57.75 meters. Annie picked up a national championship earlier this year during the indoor season. She won the weight throw with a mark of 25.13 meters."The season is not over yet, but so far it is going really good," Annie said. "This year made me love track even more because of the growth that has been happening. This year showed me that hard work does pay off. My greatest accomplishment this year (so far) is winning indoor national title and throwing the No. 2 all-time collegiate mark. My mental health has also been better."Annie will go on to compete at the 2026 NCAA Division 1 Outdoor Track and Field Championships next month in Eugene, Oregon."It's just so much fun to see her compete and do the things that she is doing," JHS co-head track and field coach Mike Dietz said of Annie. "To be able to see it from afar is just awesome. She's proving it at the next level. She and her sister both had a heckuva weekend, and so did those other girls in the NSIC."It's a sign of our Blue Jay pride," he said. "I am really proud of all our former athletes."

Blue-chip athlete raves about multi-day visit with Florida State
Florida State got a surprise visitor on Thursday, and it was 2027 four-star athlete Brayton Feister. It was his first time taking a trip to Tallahassee to see the Seminoles in person.Making a great first impression was key for FSU, especially with a recruit like Feister, who has around 40 scholarship offers on the table. According to the 6-foot-2, 238-pounder, they did just that."My time in florida state was spent incredibly!! Thank you everyone that made the visit smooth an treating us with great hospitality! Fear The Spear!🍢," Feister said on social media.Feister is the No. 132 overall player and the No. 7 athlete in the country per 247Sports composite rankings. He's listed as the No. 5 prospect in the state of Ohio, also. He's an incredible two-way talent who is coming off a dominant junior campaign at Archbishop Hoban High School in Akron, Ohio. Feister ran for 1,098 yards and scored 17 touchdowns as a running back. As a linebacker, he produced 133 tackles, 39 tackles for loss, 13 sacks, two interceptions, and four forced fumbles. Feister will play his senior season at Massillon Washington High School in Massillon, Ohio. The Seminoles already have three-star athlete Dayon Cooper committed in the 2027 recruiting cycle, and he'll play cornerback under defensive coordinator Tony White. There hasn't been any word on how Florida State views Feister up until this point, but he certainly has the potential to be a great addition on either side of the ball. The next step for Florida State is to get Feister on campus for an official visit. They've also offered his younger brother, Brydon Feister, who is a three-star athlete in the 2028 class. He hasn't taken a visit to Tallahassee yet, but that could change in a heartbeat after his big brother had such a good trip.My time in florida state was spent incredibly!! Thank you everyone that made the visit smooth an treating us with great hospitality!
