Daniel Ricciardo Left “Lost for Words” After Attending His First Indy 500 Following F1 Retirement
The Indy 500 has a habit of doing something to first-timers that no amount of television coverage can prepare them for. Daniel Ricciardo just became the latest convert. The retired F1 driver attended this year’s race as a fan after stepping away from competitive motorsport and taking on an ambassadorial role with Ford Racing. He’d been genuinely excited beforehand – appearing on Conor Daly’s Speed Street podcast ahead of the race, he said it was probably the most excited he’d been since childhood to attend an event purely as a spectator. The reality, it turns out, lived up to the billing.Felix Rosenqvist delivered one of the most extraordinary finishes the race has ever produced, passing David Malukas on the final straight to win by 0.0233 seconds – the closest margin in the 110-year history of the event. If you’re going to attend your first Indy 500, that’s the one to pick. Why Buxton’s Take on the Race and Daniel Ricciardo’s ReactionWill Buxton serves as the lead commentator for Fox Sports’ IndyCar coverage and spent years as one of the most prominent voices in Formula 1 broadcasting – which gives him a useful vantage point when he talks about how the two worlds compare. On the Up To Speed podcast, he recounted catching up with Ricciardo after the race.“I saw Daniel Ricciardo after the race because he was there attending his first, and I was just like, ‘What did you think?’ And he was just, like, he was almost lost for words. He was blown away by what it was and what it represented.”Ricciardo had specifically mentioned the sheer scale of the infield and the raw sound of the cars as two things he was most drawn to – wanting to hear what an IndyCar sounds like flat-out into Turn 1 and see firsthand how intimidating that entry looks.Buxton’s broader argument on the podcast was a full-throated defence of the Indy 500’s standing in motorsport. He invoked the Triple Crown – the Indy 500, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and the Formula 1 World Championship – and the reasoning behind why Graham Hill defined it that way: that winning the Indy 500 demands a comparable level of achievement to claiming a world title or conquering Le Mans. “The Indy 500 for me is… it’s one of the most spectacular… like, it is the most spectacular race. It’s one of the most spectacular sporting events on the face of the earth,” he said. His co-host called him out on the fence-sitting: “I feel like you’re having a debate with yourself here, Will.” Buxton admitted it immediately – “I am, I am” – before she pushed him to just say it plainly. “What you’re really trying to tell us is that your answer is the Indy 500 and that’s okay. You can say that with your chest. We’re not going to judge you.”For a man who spent years embedded in F1, that’s a strong endorsement. And given that Ricciardo, an eight-time grand prix winner who spent the better part of a decade in the sport‘s most high-profile paddocks, walked away from his first Indy 500 reportedly struggling to find the words, it might be worth taking seriously. Some races you watch. Some races you feel.At the Brickyard, roughly 800 miles from where the Canadian Grand Prix was running on the same afternoon, Ricciardo was getting his answer.

‘The Cardinal Countdown: 99 Days Until Kickoff’
JEROD SMITH II #99Height: 6’4” Weight: 270lb Position: DL Class: Junior Hometown: Corbin, KYSummary: Not sure we could have picked a better player to kick off the ‘Countdown Season’ than Jerod Smith II. Not only does he encompass the staff fully embarrassing the transfer portal, he also highlights the recruiting relationships being built across the state and across the region, headlined by Vince Marrow, the Cards new ‘Executive Director of Football Personnel and Recruiting’.Marrow’s relationship with both Jerod and his brother Jacob (LB) was a selling feature for the duo to make the trip down I-64, but equally important was the trajectory of the program who is looking to hunt championships and playoff appearances. Jerod played two seasons for the Wildcats, and used 2025 as an opportunity to post 27 tackles, 5 TFL, and a sack while seeing action in all twelve games. In the spring camp Jerod was making his presence known early with good speed and what a few outlets have referred to as “heavy hands” meaning he is ready to punch some unsuspecting lineman, with some verified power behind it. While we’re still (checks notes) ninety nine days until kickoff, I can see Smith as a starting caliber edge in 2026 for the Cards. We’ll ignore the prior grievances of his time in Lexington, and begin to scrub the internet for any L’s Down propaganda.

Great Falls High's Scarlet Harris wins 100 hurdles title at AA state track
MISSOULA – When Scarlet Harris saw her older brother Reed win a state title three years ago, it seemed like an accomplishment beyond comprehension. Now the Great Falls High star has joined the club.Harris topped the field in the girls’ 100-meter hurdles finals on Saturday, May 30, at the Class AA state track and field meet at MCPS Stadium on the campus of Big Sky High School. After clocking the event’s top AA time this season in Friday’s prelims (14.91), the junior earned gold with a time of 15.12, 0.07 ahead of Paisley Johnson of Missoula Hellgate.More: CMR boys tennis 3-peats, Pike wins girls’ titleMore: Great Falls High’s Bree MacDonald runner-up in pole vault at state track meet“I feel like I’m daydreaming,” Harris said. “It just feels so amazing. It’s great.”Harris not only joined her brother Reed – the boys’ 200 champ in 2023 – as a Bison state champion but became the first Great Falls High girls’ individual winner since Morgan Evans in 2017.Harris heard from Reed, now a wide receiver on the Arizona State football team, shortly after the event.“He just texted me and said, ‘Way to get ‘em,’” Harris said. “I’m just happy that I finally did something that seemed so impressive.”It was Harris’ third All-State finish in the 100 hurdles, as she finished fourth as a freshman and runner-up in 2025. Her prelim time of 14.91 was fourth all-time in program history behind Evans (14.47, 2017), Kris Schmitt (14.64, 1985), and Sheri Martinez (14.74, 1980).“This is just trust, like trusting everything that I’m doing,” Harris said. “Like breaking 15 (seconds), I always say I’m going to do it, and then I finally did it. It’s amazing that I did it at state. This is the place to do it.”Harris now has six All-State distinctions in three seasons after also placing third in the long jump on Friday, as she finished fourth in the 200 as a freshman and sixth in the long jump last year. Her long jump of 17 feet, 5.5 inches is also fourth all-time in Bison history and the best finish for a Great Falls High girl since Twila Reovan was third in 2018 (17-11.25).“I’m really happy, because my goal was to do better than last year because last year’s state was a little hard,” Harris said. “And I’ve done that. I placed better than last year, and I (set personal records). So, I’m really grateful for everything that’s been going on.”Harris finished eighth in the 300 hurdles as former C.M. Russell High and Great Falls High athlete Aizalyn Flaten won the event for Bozeman Gallatin with a time of 43.42 to set a PR. Flaten, who was All-State in the 300 for CMR in 2023 and in the triple jump for the Bison last season, was third in the 100 hurdles (15.29).CMR distance standout Emerson Hamma, who made the podium in fifth on Friday in the 3200, earned fourth place in the 1600 on Saturday with a career-best time of 4:15.09. Hamma concluded his career with the Rustlers with three All-State finishes in track and two in cross-country.CMR junior Tayah Osier was All-State in the girls’ high jump, finishing fifth at a height of 5 feet, 2 inches. This article originally appeared on Great Falls Tribune: Great Falls High's Scarlet Harris wins 100 hurdles title at AA state track

Queer male blood donations are way up now after changing to new risk assessment model
Blood donations in England are way up, as the National Health Service benefits from eligibility changes that have brought more gay and bisexual men to their local donation sites. A recent survey found that 7.5% of male blood donors now report that they’re bisexual, gay, pansexual, queer, bicurious, or sexually fluid, SceneMag reports. That number was 1.8% in 2014. Related New rules allow more queer Australians to give blood: Let’s “give the gift of life” In 2021, an NHS steering group set about determining whether donor screening could be made more personalized without compromising safety. After a review of previous evidence and new data, the group’s recommendations were accepted by the government and introduced by the NHS in June 2021. The new guidelines introduced an individualized, risk-based assessment for donors of all genders. Everybody donating blood now is subject to the same three-month waiting period if they’ve had anal sex with a new or multiple partners. The new rules are based on evidence of risk rather than sexual orientation. Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today The assessment “gave us the evidence to move to a more individualized donor check,” said Su Brailsford, Consultant in Epidemiology and Health Protection for Blood and Transfusion at the NHS. The survey numbers are good news, they added. “Donation became more inclusive, but safety remained the priority. The survey statistics indicate more gay and bisexual men are now donating, which is very encouraging to see.” NHS collects around 1.5 million blood, plasma, and platelet donations annually, and requires about 200,000 new donors every year to maintain a constant supply. Katy Davison, Principal Scientist in Epidemiology at the UK Health Security Agency and a member of the team researching the changes, said blood safety has not been affected by the new rules. Reports show “no impact on blood safety since the more individualized assessment was introduced,” they said. In recent years, Australia has moved to a new individualized risk assessment, as has the U.S. New Zealand is on track to do the same. One gay man long denied the opportunity to donate is Thomas Yates, a gymnastics coach from Manchester. Yates had wanted to donate since he was a boy, following the example of his parents, and mindful of his grandfather, who relied on regular blood transfusions to treat leukemia. Yates rolled up his sleeve right after he was eligible. He’s donated 16 times since. “I booked my first donation almost as soon as the rules changed,” he said. “I felt elated afterwards. Proud, happy, overjoyed. Even speaking about it now, I’m getting a little teary.” Now engaged, Thomas donates regularly at his local donor center in Manchester. He’s encouraging others to do likewise. “It’s so easy to donate,” said the coach. “You’re literally saving someone’s life with one hour of your time. I’m pleased the surveys show more queer people are donating. I think it helps change perspectives.” Subscribe to the LGBTQ Nation newsletter and be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Detroit Tigers, Game 59: One thing I loved, one thing I didn't
The News' Tony Paul gives his quick takes on the Tigers' 7-1 loss to the White Sox on Saturday:One thing I lovedWelp, it's definitely going to be a fascinating trade deadline for the Tigers this summer. They'd need a miraculous run to avoid being sellers, and there's just not much to hang your hat on in terms of that kind of hope right now.The good news for the Tigers is ace Tarik Skubal continues to look like he might be weeks from returning from arthroscopic elbow surgery, rather than months. Skubal had a flat-ground throwing session before Saturday's game in Chicago, and he was letting it fly under the watchful eye of Tigers pitching coach Chris Fetter. Skubal high-fived with some teammates when he was done. There's still no timetable for his return, and he's definitely going to need a rehab start or two — the Tigers' minor-league organizations, you better believe, are anxiously awaiting more details on that, cuz they have tickets to sell, yo! — before he rejoins Detroit's rotation, for at least a start or two before he's almost certainly traded away. And if there are no setbacks, the bidding war is going to be as fierce as we've seen at MLB's trade deadline in a long, long time. Dodgers. Yankees. Cubs. Padres. Mariners. Blue Jays. Brewers. Mystery team. It's going to be riveting — in other words, the opposite of whatever the Tigers are right now.#Tigers ace Tarik Skubal getting in some early, flat-ground throwing before today’s game in Chicago. pic.twitter.com/KKmvtUHAtv— Tony Paul | Detroit News (@TonyPaul1984) May 30, 2026One thing I didn'tInjuries tell part of the story with the Tigers' woes in 2026. A big part of the story, especially on offense. There's a major trickle-down effect. With so many key players out, too many lesser players are having to get too many at-bats — and pretty much all of those guys are not living up to their previous high-water marks. Jahmai Jones, for example. He's on this team to hit left-handed pitching. That's it. Plain and simple. And, right now, he can't even do that. Here's Jones against lefties last season and this season:2025: .970 OPS, seven home runs, 17 RBIs in 122 plate appearances2026: .594 OPS, two home runs, seven RBIs in 62 plate appearancesJones was 0-for-2 with a double play in Saturday's game and has just four hits the entire month of May. You wonder how little runway remains for the journeyman once the Tigers start to get their everyday guys back.On the flip side, Wenceel Perez seems to be finding his stroke. The Young Terps, Trader and Phillips, impressing at Dolphins OTAs
The Miami Dolphins have held organized team activities over the last few weeks, and a pair of second-year players have stood out to many. The Maryland Terrapins duo, and fifth-round draft picks from 2025, safety Dante Trader Jr and defensive tackle Jordan Phillips, have been the talk of the town.First-year head coach Jeff Hafley has praised Trader for his work ethic, dedication and intelligence, and Phillips continues to impress with his strength and potential as a bona fide nose tackle who could be a fixture on this defensive line. "Dante loves football," Hafley recently told South Florida reporters. “He’s always here, he’s always in the building, he’s always asking questions. I mean, he practices so hard, he’s so intentional. He’s a smart football player who loves the game; he’s a lot of fun to coach.”"When it comes to taking what he’s learning in the classroom and applying on the field and being in the right spot and communicating and grasping the scheme, and showing good leadership back there and being a great teammate and giving great effort and having a great attitude, I mean, I can go on about him.”Hafley did say he realizes this is OTAs and very early in the offseason program, and the real test will be when helmets and shoulder pads come on later in the summer, but said of Trader at this point, “For passing the test of what he’s been given right now, I mean, I think he’s doing a great job.”As a rookie, Trader cracked the starting lineup in three games, and on the season, finished with 55 total tackles, a pass defensed, along with a forced fumble and a recovery. He played in 39% of the Dolphins’ defensive snaps for the season, and was a help on special teams’ units, playing in 60% of snaps in that phase of the game. In 2026, Trader is heading for a significant spike in defensive work. The Dolphins have a very thin safety room where Trader has emerged as a likely starter and leader in the position group. As for Phillips, he has been more impressive so far than Miami’s 2025 first-round selection and fellow defensive lineman Kenneth Grant. Phillips has proven to be outstanding in the middle of the defensive front.Veteran defensive lineman and Dolphins elder statesman, Zach Sieler, has been impressed with Phillips’ progression, performance and efforts on the field and in the training room.“I think one of the first things he got in trouble for was squatting too much," Sieler said. "He's worked his tail off this offseason; to see his growth from last year to this year has been incredible."His confidence on the field, his knowledge, you can tell the game is starting to click for him more and more, you can see that at the end of last season, and how well he played the run and all that stuff. In 2025, Phillips saw 43% of Miami’s defensive snaps and started 16 games, tallying 34 total tackles (one for loss) and a quarterback hit. However, stats are not the sole aspect to look at in Phillips, as his strength is taking on multiple blockers and being key in stopping the run and helping teammates get to ball carriers. At just 22 years old, Phillips has sky-high potential to be a decade-plus starter in this league, and Trader could very well benefit from being a star pupil of Hafley’s, who specializes in coaching defensive backs. On an extremely young Miami team starting yet another rebuild, it is looking very evident that these young Terps are foundational pieces for Hafley and the Dolphins.More Dolphins: Veteran defensive lineman says he wants to retire with the DolphinsThis article originally appeared on Dolphins Wire: The Young Terps, Trader and Phillips, impressing at Dolphins OTAs

The pair advance on in the individual portion of the tourney for No. 1 singles players.Wu won 6-2, 6-4 for the Kingsmen, while Yergler won 7-6 (9-7), 6-4 for the Huskies.Penn also got a 6-4, 3-6, 6-0 win from junior Gabby Roland at No. 3 singles. The Kingsmen had beaten Carroll 3-2 during the regular season."Olivia played extremely well," said Penn coach Eric Bowers in a phone interview Saturday afternoon. Juniors Ava Lightburn and Hayden Striegel lost 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles and seniors Mary Kirleis and Amina Spahic lost 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 doubles."Carroll is an experienced team, and we just seem to keep playing them in the semi-state," Bowers noted. "I think this team felt they had something to prove this year after we lost our No. 1 singles player from last year."This team at 19-3 surpassed all expectations. They won the NIC title for the first time since 2019 and had a top 10 ranking. They just had a great team attitude. We won a lot of 3-2 matches this season and we will have five of these players back next season."Yergler won a tough match for the Huskies lone point."This was a good win for Libby," said Saint Joseph coach Bill Mountford in a phone interview Saturday afternoon. "She gutted it out. The Carmel player, who Libby beat earlier in the season, got everything back. "She lost 6-3, 6-2 to the Carmel girl last time we played them. She was up 6-5 in the second set."St. Joe also lost 4-1 to Carmel during the regular season."I told our girls that next year starts today," Mountford stated. "You have to put the time in. The only way that you get better is to play matches. We played a tough schedule this season and that's the best way to get better."We lose one senior from this year's team. We had a lot of players gain valuable experience this year. I think that we will be a better team next year, but you have to put the work in in the offseason."This article originally appeared on South Bend Tribune: Penn, South Bend Saint Joseph girls tennis lose IHSAA semi-state matches

Vitality Blast, County Ground, HoveMiddlesex 213-4 (20 overs): De Caires 80*, Holden 77; Mills 3-31Sussex 182 (19.4 overs): Alsop 43; Helm 3-41Middlesex beat Sussex by 31 runsScorecardMiddlesex won their first T20 Blast match of the season with an impressive display against Sussex at Hove, with the home side replacing them at the bottom of the South group table.Middlesex scored a challenging 213-4, propelled by a 41-ball 77 by opener Max Holden, who hit five sixes and six fours.Opening partner Adam Rossington had fallen in the fourth over, cramped by the pace of Tymal Mills he played a short-arm hook to deep backward square-leg.But left-hander Holden was in fine form and raised the fifty in the sixth over when he guided a Mills delivery to the third man boundary. He put on 95 for the second wicket with Joshua De Caires, who made his maiden Blast fifty and went on to score an unbeaten 80 from 44 deliveries, with five sixes and seven fours. And when Holden holed out in the deep, the ball after striking Danny Briggs for his final six, captain Leus du Plooy added 65 for the third wicket with De Caires to put Sussex on the back foot. The Sussex bowling attack missed Ollie Robinson and Henry Crocombe – called up by England and England Lions respectively. Mills, who took three wickets, bowled well, and sometimes with real pace, but apart from the experienced Briggs, whose four overs cost just 33 runs, the other Sussex bowlers were expensive.Sussex opener Tom Clark was injured in the field. But he had shown such form in the previous game against Kent that he opened with Jack Carson running for him. And, virtually batting on one leg, he gave Sussex the start they wanted, with two massive sixes and four fours in a 13-ball 31 before he was caught behind off Tom Helm.Opening partner Dan Hughes had fallen in the previous over and when John Simpson drilled spinner Luke Hollman to long-off from the first delivery following the power play, a disappointing stroke, Sussex were faltering at 65-3 in the seventh over.James Coles was not at his most fluent, and was almost caught three times, but some big-hitting by Tom Alsop kept the required rate below 13 an over.Alsop had hit 43 from a partnership of 67 with Coles when his 24-ball innings came to an end, caught at long-off off De Caires.Sussex were only marginally behind the rate but they kept losing wickets. Coles, whose 33 occupied 27 deliveries, was fifth out at 143 and when Danny Lamb was lbw for a single three balls later Sussex had lost three wickets for 13 runs and the run-rate had spiked up, with 69 needed from the final five overs. It was too much for Sussex's lower order and, under intense scoreboard pressure, they were bowled out for 182, losing their last seven wickets for 50 runs.ECB Reporters' Network supported by Rothesay.Notifications, social media and more with BBC Sport

GAME 18: Bulldogs outlast Crusaders in midnight marathon game
May 30—Tennessee Wesleyan Bulldogs coach Billy Berry has spoken to the effect that his team is more than prepared to go without rest as much as necessary to claim an Avista NAIA World Series baseball title."I tell them: 'You'll get all the sleep you need when you're dead,'" he said earlier this week.[NAIA World Series Day 7 in photos]In a contest that started more than three hours late on Friday due to rain and lightning delays and saw enough twists, turns and scoring to encompass several normal games' worth of play as it stretched into the a.m. hours, that attitude might have seemed fitting. The eighth-seeded Bulldogs overcame the 10th-seeded William Carey Crusaders 16-14 in an encounter at Harris Field that proved to be the longest nine-inning game in Series history, spanning 4 hours, 17 minutes. With the win, Tennessee Wesleyan earned a spot in today's 6:30 p.m. national title game against No. 1 Taylor (Ind.).Bulldogs blitz to leadAfter Friday's original 6:30 p.m. start time was nixed due to the impending storm, prospects for playing at all looked dubious as hours of rain pelted the stadium. A determined crew of volunteers and interns put out tarps and stayed at the ready to have the field in a playable state, dancing to stadium music along the way to stay warm and pass the time. Once the rain finally subsided, TWU took to the field first of the two teams as an exuberant fan called out, "Let's get this started! Two more games! Two more games!"AdvertisementThe opening pitch was thrown at 9:52 p.m.Having played a punishing schedule this week and exhausted its usual suspects at the mound, Tennessee Wesleyan (47-15) displayed pitching staff depth in the form of a strong start from senior Isaiah Williams. The 6-foot-6 left-hander provided an imposing presence as he oversaw four innings of shutout ball with three strikeouts while his team built an 8-0 lead.Hagen Escoto sent a two-run home run over the left-field fence in the second inning to create scoreboard separation for TWU at 3-0. Josh Shelly would blast his own solo homer two innings later to stretch the lead to 6-0 before Kolton Reynolds fired a two-run shot over right field to bring the mercy rule into view.Crusaders battle backWilliam Carey coach Bobby Halford made it a recurring theme throughout this Series to suggest that his team seemed to benefit from divine intervention, enabling it to muster wins from the most improbable positions. The Crusaders (41-19) looked poised for perhaps their biggest miracle yet shortly after midnight when they rallied from the early eight-run deficit to take a 13-9 lead in the top of the sixth.A three-run home run from Franklin Hernandez in the fifth inning started the comeback for William Carey.Williams began to run out of steam for TWU in the fifth, and he and three relievers took turns struggling in the sixth, which saw the Crusaders rack up an incredible 10 runs on six hits, five walks and a hit-by-pitch.Down-to-the-wireThough they might briefly have appeared to be in disarray upon finding themselves on the receiving end of the Series' most improbable comeback, the Bulldogs proved their own resilience and then some. With rain once again falling, they nosed back into the lead an inning later as Escoto delivered the go-ahead RBI single.Jayden Mark drove Alan McClean home for the Crusaders' final run of the day in the top of the eighth, knotting things back up at 14-14 as the hour neared 2 a.m. The prospect of extra innings loomed, with bands of hardcore supporters for each team buckling down to stay as long as necessary. The Bulldogs took the lead for the last time when Josh Shelly hit an RBI double for the Bulldogs, then reached home himself with the help of a David Ballenilla single and a slip on the wet grass from a William Carey fielder. In the top of the ninth, TWU closer Bradley Johnson started things off earning a strikeout swinging against William Carey's Tyler Ducksworth. The Crusaders' Weston Wales hit a powerful line drive to an open space in the outfield past first base, but the Bulldogs' Kolton Reynolds headed it off on a dead run, dove at full extension and snagged the ball in his glove, coming up with it after rolling sidelong on the grass to earn the second out.The game's final at-bat was fittingly dramatic, coming down to William Carey's Gage Hinnant sitting on a full count. Hinnant shifted backward to avoid an incoming pitch which he did not believe to be fair — but instead of receiving a walk, he heard a third strike called, bringing the game to its official conclusion at 2:09 a.m.TakeawaysThe Crusaders' stunning run to the business end of the tournament while holding its bottom seed was thus narrowly brought to an end. A title-round appearance would have been the Crusaders' first since 1969.The Bulldogs, meanwhile, continue a pattern of reaching the final every seven years, having done so previously in 2012 and 2019. They came away victorious on both occasions.Tennessee Wesleyan will have a short turnover and face long odds on paper against the top-seeded Trojans (56-6) today — but this year's Series has often proven to be a tournament for underdogs.William Carey 000 03(10) 010—14 17 2Tennessee Wesleyan 131 311 420—16 20 3D. Jaguars predicted to cut $43 million defender after June 1
Jaguars predicted to cut $43 million defender after June 1 originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Jacksonville Jaguars have had an interesting offseason, to say the least. The team won the AFC South in 2025 and hosted a home playoff game. It was seen as a positive step forward, and many assumed the team would go all-in this offseason. However, the team opted for a quiet free agency period, with a couple of running backs being the only additions. Then, in the draft, general manager James Gladstone was heavily criticized for reaching with most of his picks. Of course, none of this will matter if the Jaguars end up winning again, but it's worth keeping an eye on. Now, one Jaguars insider thinks the team could opt to move on from a notable name before the season begins. Jaguars predicted to cut Arik Armstead ahead of 2026June 1 is a popular time of year when veterans around the league are cut. This is because cutting players after June 1 allows the teams to spread cap hits over two seasons. As a result, it's likely we'll see some notable names on the chopping block over the next few days. John Shipley of Jaguars On SI recently identified some Jaguars who could be cut, including defensive lineman Arik Armstead. Armstead was selected in the first round way back in 2015, and he's long been a solid defender in the league. Regarding Armstead's status as a cut candidate, Shipley offered the following: There is no player who has been discussed more as a potential June 1st cut for the Jaguars than defensive tackle Arik Armstead. The veteran defensive tackle had his best season in years last year and proved to be a difference-maker as an interior pass-rusher during the first half of the season before he sustained a hand injury. Still, the number the Jaguars would save on cutting Armstead is a bit eye-popping at $14,485,294 -- the highest amount the Jaguars could save on any post-June 1st cut.As Shipley mentioned, Armstead has frequently been floated as a cut candidate due to his bloated cap number. However, as Shipley also noted, Armstead was actually very good in 2025, so his loss would definitely be felt. The defender played in 16 games in 2025 and collected 28 tackles. 5.5 sacks, and seven tackles for loss. Armstead has always been a reliable pass rusher, but his best season came in 2019 when he racked up 10 sacks. The Jaguars traded for Ruke Orhorhoro this offseason, and he could take some of the role Armstead has. The team also expects big things from rookie Albert Regis, who was just taken in the third round. Dodgers GM Reveals Why Ryan Ward Got Call-Up Over Top Prospect James Tibbs III
The Los Angeles Dodgers recalled utility Ryan Ward from Triple-A on Friday. The franchise could have used the roster spot to call up their No. 10 overall prospect, James Tibbs III, for his MLB debut.Oklahoma City’s James Tibbs III is introduced before a minor league baseball game between the Oklahoma City Comets and the Albuquerque Isotopes at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City, Friday, March 27, 2026. Photo Credit: BRYAN TERRY/THE OKLAHOMAN / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn ImagesTibbs III is off to a strong start in his first season with Triple-A Oklahoma City. He is averaging .314 with a 1.047 OPS and 15 home runs across 52 games. The 23-year-old has also made appearances at first base, right field and designated hitter this season. Tibbs III is projected to make his MLB debut in 2027. But with both Teoscar Hernández and Kiké Hernández landing on the injured list this past week, the Dodgers could have used this an opportunity to call Tibbs III up. Instead, the Dodgers decided to recall their No. 19 overall prospect, Ward. He is expected to split time in left field with Alex Freeland, who the Dodgers recalled on Wednesday. Ward’s MLB Experience Was A Factor in His Call-UpDodgers general manager Brandon Gomes said Ward’s previous MLB experience and his performance in Triple-A this season are the reasons Los Angeles called him up over Tibbs III. “Ward-o’s done it before. He’s done it for a while. It’s good to get him back up and into the mix and hopefully get a really opportunity here,” Gomes said, per Fabian Ardaya. Rebilas-Imagn Images“I think he’s performing great, obviously,” Gomes said of Tibbs, per The Athletic’s Katie Woo. “The numbers are fantastic. I just think Ward has done this for a while, and he’s certainly earned it. His numbers were nothing to scoff at in Triple A either, especially when you break out the (versus right-handed pitching) stuff.”Tibbs III has also reportedly been dealing with a minor forearm injury that has limited him to designated hitter since May 6, according to Ardaya. Ardaya reported that this is not the reason the Dodgers did not call him up. Meanwhile, Ward is slashing .254/.379/.418 with a .797 OPS and six home runs in 47 games. He made his MLB debut with the Dodgers on April 19, going for 2-for-6 with an RBI in two games. Photo Credit: Mark J. 4 internal Seahawks AGM replacements for Nolan Teasley
This weekend, the Seattle Seahawks assistant general manager position came open after the Minnesota Vikingshired Nolan Teasley as their next general manager. After the success John Schneider had with Teasley, it would make sense to promote from within to fill the vacancy. Here are four internal candidates to replace him.Director Of College Scouting, Aaron HinelineFirst up has to be Seahawks Director Of College Scouting Aaron Hineline. He and Teasley were actually college friends and teammates at Central Washington. They both played running back and were separated only by two years. They were last promoted by the Seahawks at the same time as well. Because of their close ties, it wouldn’t be a shock to see Hineline follow Teasley to work as his right-hand man in Minnesota, either.Director Of Pro Personnel, Willie SchneiderSeahawks’ Director Of Pro Personnel Willie Schneider replaced Teasley in this role during that same batch of promotions as he and Hineline in 2023. If the Seahawks wanted to follow the same pro personnel-side path for the AGM spot, this would be the likeliest pick. Teasley collaborated with Schneider on trades and pro scouting significantly and Schneider would seem to be well versed in that aspect as well.Vice President Of Player Acquisition, Matt BerryMatt Berry has 26 years of NFL front office experience and 19 with the Seahawks. As the Vice President Of Player Acquisition, he’s managed teams of scouts and coordinated the nationwide scouting efforts. He began as a regional scout in 2008 and was in Hineline’s role for eight years before he moved up to his current role in the same batch of promotions as the rest of the candidates. He’s listed third on the Player Personnel department’s page, ahead of Berry and Hineline.Vice President Of Player Personnel, Trent KirchnerTrent Kirchner is listed second right behind Teasley’s name on the Seahawks’ Player Personnel department roster online. He has 26 years of NFL personnel department experience. The Seahawks’ website says he was key in “shifting team identity without a full rebuild” for the organization. Only the Seahawks know who they’ll want to be the name, but Kirchner has at least as good of a chance as the other three. This article originally appeared on Seahawks Wire: Seahawks assistant general manager search: internal candidates

PSG wins back-to-back Champions League titles after shootout victory against Arsenal
PSG's head coach Luis Enrique, top, celebrates with players after winning the Champions League final soccer match against Arsenal in Budapest, Hungary, Saturday, May 30, 2026. (AP Photo/Denes Erdos)2026-05-30T08:32:29Z ▶ Follow live updates of the 2026 Champions League final BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — Winning the Champions League was so nice, Paris Saint-Germain had to do it twice.PSG became back-to-back European champion by beating Arsenal 4-3 on penalties in a dramatic final in Budapest that ended 1-1 after extra time on Saturday.“It’s incredible,” captain Marquinhos said. “From the very first day of this season, the coach said it’s hard to win, and winning twice is even more difficult. So we all had to get back to work. That was the mentality.”Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes fired the last of his team’s penalties over the bar to hand PSG the shootout win.The French giant is only the second team to retain the trophy in the modern era after all-time king of Europe Real Madrid.Luis Enrique became a three-time winner as a coach and has moulded a team that is simply too good even for the best the continent has to offer. That includes an Arsenal team that won the Premier League last week and topped the first stage of the Champions League with a perfect winning record, finishing 10 points and 10 places ahead of PSG. That mattered little in Puskas Arena as PSG reaffirmed its status as the dominant force in European soccer. “It’s even more special because we knew before the match how difficult it would be,” Luis Enrique said. “I think it’s deserved over the course of the whole season, even if the final was very closely contested.” Read More After demolishing Inter Milan 5-0 in last year’s final, PSG endured a tougher foe as Arsenal sat deep and relied on the best defense in the competition.PSG dominated possession but created little after going behind to a Kai Havertz goal in the sixth minute. It took an Ousmane Dembélé penalty in the 65th to level the score and take the final to extra time for the first time in 10 years. PSG coach in elite companyBy going back to back, Luis Enrique achieved what his good friend Pep Guardiola could not after winning Champions Leagues at Barcelona and Manchester City. Luis Enrique joined Carlo Ancelotti, Bob Paisley, Zinedine Zidane and Guardiola in an elite group of coaches with at least three European Cups. The next target will be to emulate Madrid’s three in a row under Zidane from 2016-18. And with a starting lineup in Budapest with an average age of less than 24, Luis Enrique has built a team that has the potential to dominate for years.“It’s crazy, it’s crazy. We’re going to enjoy it first, and after we’re going to work and work again because we want more. We are really hungry. We are a young team, and we know we are really ambitious. So next season we have to go again,” Désiré Doué told broadcaster TNT Sports.Having waited 22 years to get its hands back on the Premier League trophy, Arsenal’s wait in Europe goes on.This was its 226th game in the European Cup or Champions League without lifting the trophy. No other team has played so many without being champion.“First of all you have to go through that pain, digest it and then turn it into fuel and improve and reach a different level because it will demand a different level with the quality that is around Europe,” manager Mikel Arteta said.“I want to congratulate PSG because they are, in my opinion, the best team in the world. What they are able to do with the ball, individual actions, I haven’t seen it (before).” Arsenal comfortable defendingThere were times when it looked as though Arsenal’s Champions League losing streak would be snapped. Especially when PSG looked so short of ideas after going behind to Havertz’s breakaway early goal.By scoring so early the tone was set and Arsenal was comfortable sitting back and soaking up pressure. PSG struggled to find openings and looked edgy in possession. On an evening that kicked off with a pre-match show by rock band The Killers that sounded off in the acoustics of the stadium, PSG also fell a little flat and registered just one shot on target in the first half.It was given a way back into the final when Cristhian Mosquera brought down Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in the box and referee Daniel Siebert pointed to the spot.Ballon d’Or holder Dembélé made no mistake, firing low to the left as Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya dived the wrong way. Red flares were lit by PSG fans, likely as much in relief as celebration. There were rare chances for PSG to win in regulation. Kvaratskhelia hit the post in the 77th after a rapid breakaway and substitute Bradley Barcola wasted another opportunity to seal it at the death when firing wide. Arsenal was limited to a 24.7% possession average — the lowest in a final since records began in 2004, according to stats provider Opta. But Arteta’s dogged and determined team pushed PSG all the way, even in the shootout.Eberechi Eze missed an earlier spot kick for Arsenal but Raya saved from Nuno Mendes to keep the score level.Lucas Beraldo converted the last of PSG’s spot kicks, meaning Gabriel had to convert to take it to sudden death. But he blasted high over the bar into a section of PSG fans, who erupted in celebrations along with their new two-time champion team. It was a familiar sight as Marquinhos got his hands on the trophy for a second time and raised it aloft in the center of the field as gold confetti and fireworks exploded around the team.French President Emmanuel Macron posted his congratulations on X: “A new star is shining over Paris!” and told PSG players they were “making all of Europe dream. France is proud.”___James Robson is at https://x.com/jamesalanrobson___AP soccer: https://apnews.com/hub/soccer

Paris police detain 45 after violence erupts during celebrations of PSG's Champions League title
PARIS (AP) — Paris police detained 45 people after violence disrupted celebrations late Saturday of Paris Saint-Germain’s second Champions League title win and a group tried to storm a police station in the French capital. Fans began celebrating in Paris after the final whistle earlier in the evening in Budapest, Hungary, where PSG won by beating Arsenal on penalties in a dramatic final. Dozens of fans marched along the avenues near the Arc de Triomphe, with some setting off flares and blaring car horns. Around 20,000 people gathered on the Champs-Elysees, with police working to contain the crowd. However, the Paris police prefecture said smaller groups caused disturbances in various locations, with some vandalizing shops and setting fires. One police officer was injured. Those who attempted to storm a police station in the posh 8th Arrondissement neighborhood were dispersed, police said. It said that by 10 p.m., 45 people were taken into custody. The main ring road surrounding Paris was briefly blockaded by a crowd before police dispersed it. Police also said one bakery and a restaurant were damaged. Officers also contained about 1,000 people gathered near the PSG stadium in the 16th Arrondissement and cleared barricades made from bicycles. In May last year, when police made more than 500 arrests across France following PSG's first title, Paris was on high alert, with 8,000 police officers deployed across the city.___AP soccer: https://apnews.com/hub/soccer

Red Sox Set To Make Significant Catcher Change
Boston Red Sox hatIt sure sounds like the Boston Red Sox are making a change. So far this season, Carlos Narváez hasn't been hitting much. He's slashing .210/.291/.314 with a .605 OPS, two homers and three RBIs. Connor Wong has been better offensively and entered the day on Saturday slashing .241/.323/.345 with a .668 OPS in 22 games played. While this is the case, the Red Sox have seen enough from Mickey Gasper to make a change. On Saturday, Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy alluded to the fact that Gasper is being viewed in more of a primary role behind the plate right now, as transcribed by MassLive.com's Chris Cotillo."At the moment, with right-handers, we’re looking to be aggressive to get Mickey in there,” Tracy said. “That’s not an easy thing for a drastic shift and the other two guys want to be in there, but we have to capitalize on that.“That doesn’t mean that as you move along, things can’t change. Injuries happen, or guys go in slumps. You don’t know. But right now, it’s hard to not put his name in there.”Do you have a take to get off your chest? Do you want to engage in a growing Red Sox community? Comment on our content alongside staff and fans alike!Gasper has been awesome for Boston. He's slashing .340/.380/.404 with a .784 OPS, two RBIs, three doubles and eight runs scored in 16 games played. Arguably, the Red Sox are making the right call. Bivol returns from surgery, dominates Eifert to retain unified light heavyweight titles
Dmitry Bivol faces off with Michael Eifert before successfully defending his WBA and IBF light heavyweight titles. EKATERINBURG, Russia — Dmitry Bivol answered every question about his health and his ring rust in dominant fashion Saturday night, shutting out Michael Eifert over 12 rounds to retain his WBA and IBF light heavyweight titles at the UMMC Arena. The scores were 120-107 across all three judges' cards. Bivol improves to 25-1 (12 KOs).The night's narrative was never really about Eifert. It was about whether Bivol, who had not fought in 15 months following back surgery to repair a herniated disc, could return to the form that made him one of boxing's most technically refined champions. He could. He did.Bivol wasted little time setting the tone, dropping Eifert with a left hook in the opening round. Rather than chase the finish, he pulled back, working the jab and banking rounds with the patience of a fighter who knew exactly how dominant he was. The body work came in the middle rounds as Bivol began targeting the ribs, steadily draining the challenger's energy and will. Eifert, to his credit, stayed upright, but he was rarely a threat. He never got comfortable, and he never found a way to close the distance on a man who simply does not make mistakes. The homecoming added another layer to the evening. It was Bivol's first fight in Russia since 2021, and the crowd inside the UMMC Arena saw a fighter who has become a global star since he was last on home soil, with defining victories over Canelo Álvarez, Gilberto Zurdo Ramírez, and Artur Beterbiev now on his resume. What's next remains an intriguing question for the 175-pound division. Bivol vacated his WBC belt following the Beterbiev rematch, and the WBO declined to put its title on the line Saturday due to the fight being held in Russia. With a Beterbiev trilogy, WBC champion David Benavidez, and WBO mandatory Callum Smith all in the conversation, Saturday's dominant performance only strengthens Bivol's position at the top of the division. The rust is gone. The next question is who steps up.

Alex Rychwalski | Bazarnic gets his day
Steve Bazarnic was unable to attend the Dapper Dan banquet earlier this month to accept his Top Award, so it was brought to him on early Friday afternoon.Mike Mathews presented the honor during a ramshackle ceremony in the Bazarnic’s living room on Schley Street, with dinner chairman Adam Sterne, JR Perdew, Paul Ackerman and Bazarnic’s wife Cathy present. There were no bells and whistles, and that was fitting for a coach who for 48 years taught young men grit and toughness through the game of baseball at Allegany College, winning 1,469 games and appearing in nine World Series in the process. The group packed into the living room — adorned with Penn State memorabilia, where Bazarnic played baseball, and with his 2026 American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame and Top Award honors displayed prominently next to the fireplace — and listened as Bazarnic received a phone call from some old friends.“I think the area was blessed with one of the best baseball coaches in college history,” said a voice on the other line.It belonged to Leo Mazzone, a Bruce graduate who established himself as one of the most successful pitching coaches of all-time with the Atlanta Braves. From 1991-98, Tom Glavine, Greg Maddux and John Smoltz combined to win six Cy Young awards under Mazzone’s tutelage.“You can’t describe the type of friendship we all had,” Mazzone went on. “You can’t have a better friend than Steve Bazarnic. And Steve and Cathy were a big part of our family growing up, and we miss those days. And I sure miss seeing everyone.“It’s hard to describe the great companionship and camaraderie we had as the three amigos. That’s for darn sure.“We cared about people. We cared about each other, and we still do. So it was just a great friendship that will never be replaced by anybody else.”Another member of the group call chimed in.“I think we’ve got to throw in (John) Kruk’s name with the rest of us,” said Sam Perlozzo, a Bishop Walsh alum who managed the Baltimore Orioles from 2005-07 after a Major League playing career with the Twins and Padres.“We were pretty well stocked in the area. And Steve is the reason we started it, and he looks like he finished it. And we appreciate the time that we were allotted to help with his program. Not that it needed anything, but it was just, it was big league.”Perlozzo, Mazzone and Kruk — a Keyser native who was a career .300 hitter with the Padres, Phillies and White Sox from 1986-95 — often worked with Allegany College in the offseason when the trio was still local.Bazarnic’s program produced 54 MLB draft picks, including Kruk, Stan Belinda and Steve Kline during his tenure (1972-2019).There were tears shed in the room as the trio reminisced, a discussion that also included hard boiled egg projectiles, a possible steak dinner in a future get-together, running pass patterns and baseball analytics. The latter topic prompted colorful language, immediately followed by, “don’t print that.”When the call ended, Perdew and Ackerman — sitting under an archway decorated with pictures of Bazarnic with Cathy and their daughter, Christie — described what made Bazarnic and his program special.“If there’s a better coach in America, I’d like to see him,” said Perdew, who was a coach on six of the Trojans’ World Series teams in eight years.“I was around a lot of good coaches in pro ball, and his loyalty, his hard work and dedication was incredible, but his loyalty to the players was unmatched, and that’s a fact. He always had our back, and we all wanted to play for him.”Bazarnic had the Allegany College field dedicated to him in 2023. As Mathews, who played infield at James Madison and was later a Times-News sportswriter, pointed out, the field affectionally known as “The Rock” already bore his name.Bazarnic was “The Rock” to the Trojans’ program, and its principles were built day by day through the vision of its leader. The players ran the mountain in the snow, took ground balls minutes after shoveling the tennis courts and competed with well-funded national powerhouses at the World Series wearing simple uniforms with spikes from their high school teams.“There were never any excuses,” said Perdew, who shared a memory of Bazarnic before the Trojans beat Seminole State, Oklahoma (70-5), at the 1984 NJCAA World Series.“We had no bags to carry. These dudes get off their beautiful bus with their TVs and their big-time packs, but they were bigger, they were stronger, faster than us, and everything was better.“We got on the bus and you could tell everybody was tight. No one spoke from the practice field driving, it was probably a 15-, 20-minute drive right in the traffic over to the game field. And we parked out behind the stadium.“I’ll never forget, coach (Bazarnic) is like, ‘Hey, don’t anybody move. We’ve outworked them. Look at everything they have. They got it better than us. They got these facilities. They probably practiced indoor all the time. When it was bad weather, we went out and did this. I guarantee you we want it more. And we’re tougher than them.”The Trojans won that game 9-6, and they beat San Jacinto, Texas, 7-5, en route to a third-place finish.Ackerman gave Bazarnic his flowers at the Dapper Dan banquet, but the former catcher, who played on the coach’s first region championship team, still had more to say (as he often does).“I’ve had two influential men in my life. My dad died young, then I got coach. My mother lived a good life, and then I’ve always had Mrs. Bazarnic.“Because of these two folks, and particularly that gentleman there, I’ve been set for my whole life. Every goal that I’ve accomplished, every success. And like I said at the banquet, he made us all better fathers, more accountable. He made me a better man, made me a better coach, made me a better student.”Bazarnic does not want recognition — he tried to give somebody else the Top Award when he won it in 2011 — but his friends brought it to him on Friday.A look of appreciation poured from Bazarnic’s face, as it did throughout.“Thank you.”

Petersburg beats Logan for 1st state softball championship
SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. — After qualifying in the last nine state tournaments and finishing runner-up in four of the last six, Petersburg finally got over the hump. For the first time in program history, the Vikings (28-5) won a state title in softball, defeating Logan, 6-5, in Friday’s Class AA final at Little Creek Park.“A long time coming, it’s been 40 years since a state championship,” Petersburg manager Bubba Hedrick said. “These girls deserve this. We’ve been playing for a little respect too. We feel like we’ve been slighted a little bit, and the only way you fix that is win.”The story of Petersburg’s run to glory was the offense’s ability to respond. In three of the four state tournament games, the Vikings either trailed or were tied and went on to win.In the opener against Lincoln, Petersburg overcame multiple weather delays, deficits of 9-0 and 12-4 and won 14-12 after over four hours. The Vikings coasted 9-1 over Sissonville and beat Logan 10-6 to advance to the Final.“It shot right up,” Petersburg third baseman Miley Tingler said of the confidence after the Lincoln win. “It was crazy, we just knew if we could get down that far and come back up, we’re resilient. and we can handle anything.”Tingler was named the Class AA tournament Most Valuable Player. She had at least two hits in all four games, finishing 9 for 13 with 10 RBIs.Trailing 5-3 in the bottom of the sixth, the Wildcats (24-9) evened the score on a two-out double from Ashlin Brumfield. With the bases loaded following an intentional walk, Shyane Tawney kept the score tied with a crucial catch on a lineout to second.“I ain’t gonna lie, we were antsy in the dugout,” Hedrick said. “We weren’t sure if we ready to make a change yet because we felt like their timing was there. We weren’t fooling them and we survived them. Tawney made a great catch, got us out of the inning.”The Vikings scored the eventual winning run after loading the bases in the top of the seventh. An error, intentional walk and a single from Tingler set up an RBI groundout from Ella Markwell.“Our resilience, we will not give up anything,” Tingler said of the team’s response to adversity. “We won’t take that, we’ll punch right back in their face.”The error proved to be costly, as a wild pitch moved runners to second and third. The second baseman dropped the ball on the throw to second as she applied the tag.Logan challenged the play, and the call stood.Gracie Carpenter slammed the door, retiring the side in order in the bottom of the seventh.Carpenter got the start and pitched the first three innings before re-entering in the seventh. She allowed two earned runs across four innings, striking out three against eight hits with no walks.Kinsley Crites got the win, tossing three innings with two earned runs on five hits and two walks with a strikeout. The Wildcats took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.Myleigh Adkins opened the scoring on a double, then Journee Akers singled to short.“A lot of that’s on them, and the way they’ve handled things,” Hedrick said of the Vikings’ response after an early deficit. “We talked about coming here, one of the things I felt was on our side was we’ve got some experience,”“We’ve been here back to back to back years. Some seniors have been here four times, juniors three, sophomores this was their second. So the stage, they were used to.”Petersburg outscored Logan 6-3 to end the game, led by a three-run top of the third.Tawney singled, then Abi Nettles reached on a bunt single and advanced to second on an error. With Tawney on third and Nettles at second, Miley Tingler hit a line drive to left for a two-run base hit.Now leading 3-2, the Vikings added another run on a groundout. Each team scored a run in the fifth, with Petersburg scoring on a passed ball and Logan on an Akers single.“Early in the year, we went to Hedgesville and we saw then what we were capable of as far as offensively,” Hedrick said. “The numbers we could put up and the home runs and extra base hits. That never went away, and it stuck with us throughout the whole year.”Ella Chew was named to the All-Tournament team.Chew finished 7 for 12 across four games, going 4 for 4 with eight RBIs in the opener against Lincoln.“I just wanted to bring the win home for my team,” Chew said. “We’ve been working really hard throughout the whole season. This is the best record we’ve ever come into a state tournament team. I think this team was better prepared than any other team to come in here and win it all.”She also caught two runners attempting to steal second.“Just kept on my toes, I knew eventually they were gonna steal either way,” Chew said. “So I just kept on my toes.”Petersburg won the school’s third state title in any team sport, ending a 40-year streak dating back to the 1986 baseball squad, which Hedrick played on.“Anytime you win a championship, I think that’s just a boost for the community,” Hedrick said. “Everybody gets behind you and they rally for you. We’re gonna celebrate it, and we’re gonna enjoy it for a while.”

Even so, their physical strength in battling for the ball and their tactical discipline are some of Australia's virtues. It could be a close game, but the odds for a Mexico victory have value."Sportskeeda: Mexico 2, Australia 0Peter Pedroncelli writes: "With a large Mexican-American crowd behind them, Mexico will dominate possession while Australia aim to be clinical on the counterattack using pace on the wings. Tiafoe won the third-round Roland-Garros match over Faria in five sets but not before a pretty brutal comment during a back-and-forth between the two competitors amid booing from the crowd. "Why don't you quit trying to act like you're tough? You're not hard bro, just play," Tiafoe told Faria at the net during a set pause while the two were arguing. The official was trying to calm them down, but to no avail. "Why don't you quit trying to act like you're tough? The unforgettable task as a ‘runner’ for CBS at BYU
Veteran broadcaster Brent Musburger prepares for his last broadcast prior to an NCAA college basketball game between Kentucky and Georgia, Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2017, in Lexington, Ky. The game marked Musburger's last broadcast before retirement. | James Crisp, Associated Press It was Friday night, Nov. 10, 1989, and I couldn’t sleep. The anticipation and excitement of an opportunity to work for CBS Sports had me wishing the clock would tick faster. I had dreamed of being a play-by-play announcer for as long as I could remember and Saturday was going to bring me closer to that day than ever before.CBS was in Provo to televise the BYU-Air Force football game, and as sophomore broadcasting major, I was assigned to the talent booth as “The Runner.” I didn’t even know what a runner did, but the fact that I would be rubbing shoulders with the likes of veteran announcer Brent Musburger and former Super Bowl champion Kenny Stabler was all the incentive I needed to grasp the task.“Are you our runner?” asked the game producer as I arrived for the early-morning crew call. “Yes,” I said.“Great. I need you to take this to Kenny at the hotel and tell him to be here by 11,” he said while handing me a large manila envelope of game notes and Stabler’s media credential.“OK,” I answered. My first official assignment for CBS was underway — driving to the Provo Marriott to knock on the door of the legendary, albeit controversial, quarterback that my friends and I had mimicked for years during neighborhood football games.A little nervous, I reached the double door of Stabler’s hotel suite and knocked. No answer.I waited, then knocked again — and waited some more. Finally, the silence was broken by the sound of approaching footsteps. In a flash, the door flew open and there he was, standing right in front of me — the great Kenny Stabler wearing nothing but a towel around his waist with a wild head of hair that had been losing its fight with the blow dryer.“What’s up man?” he asked in a southern drawl so thick I thought I was back on my church mission deep in the heart of Texas.Stunned, I spit out the message, “I’m supposed to give this to you and remind you to be at the stadium at 11.”“OK, thanks,” said Stabler and he closed the door and the quietness of the hallway returned.Mission accomplished. Driving back to the stadium I prepped for my next encounter — meeting Musburger. As a boy, I watched him host “The NFL Today” and when he moved to the play-by-play booth, I grew to appreciate his style and the way he communicated. I wanted to be just like him.“Hello young man!” Musburger boldly said as he entered the broadcast booth on the top of the press box. He reached out to shake my hand. “What’s your name?” he asked.“Dave McCann!” I answered.“Fantastic!” He said while gazing out the open window at Y Mountain. “Isn’t this a beautiful place?” Stabler arrived a few minutes later. It didn’t take long to realize that as a runner I didn’t really have anything to do. So, I stood and watched them work and interact with the production crew for the next four priceless hours.I’ll admit, there were moments when I fantasized of Musburger losing his voice and I had to step in and call the rest of the game — but he didn’t. He was as good as ever. I marveled at the way he worked, how he communicated with Stabler and his statistician and spotter as the game unfolded in front of them.Outside the booth, down on the field, BYU’s Stacey Corely returned two kickoffs for touchdowns and Ty Detmer threw for 334 yards and four touchdowns as No. 21 BYU took down the Falcons and their legendary quarterback Dee Dowis, 44-35.“You have been watching college football on CBS!” said Musburger as he signed off and headed for the exit. This was it. My last chance to say something profound, but all I could muster was, “It’s a pleasure to meet you. Someday I’m gonna see you in New York.”“You do that, young man!” Musburger said as he walked away.I figured he had probably heard someone say that to him a million times, but I meant it. The following summer, I was hired by ABC’s “Good Morning America” as their first college reporter and Musburger switched from CBS to ABC and just like that — we were colleagues on the same payroll — in New York. It’s been 37 years since my one and only job as a runner, and while the visual of Stabler in a towel is still haunting, memories of that day remain priceless. The ensuing years have included hundreds of broadcasting assignments for me in that same stadium — with many more to come. The announcement by CBS this week that the network will broadcast BYU’s game at Colorado State at 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 19 is significant — both for me and my memory bank and for the Cougars. Not once in all of BYU’s 1,089-football-game history, has CBS put the Cougars in prime time on a Saturday night. There is great potential for another priceless moment — both for BYU and for whoever is assigned to the broadcast booth in Fort Collins as The Runner. May they all make the most of a very rare occasion. Deion Sanders’ Colorado Buffaloes football team receives prediction that highlights lows of the ‘Prime Time’ era
Deion Sanders’ Colorado Buffaloes football team receives prediction that highlights lows of the ‘Prime Time’ era originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Colorado Buffaloes have been a team that’s only ever won games due to strong quarterback performances in the “Prime Time” era. Boulder has not seen any great running backs during Deion Sanders’ CU coaching tenure. That was never more evident than when Buff Insider’s Jack Carlough predicted that a Colorado running back would surpass 400 yards for the first time in four years since Coach Prime took over in 2023. Carlough believes one of the arrivals of two transfers/unknowns at RB, Alabama Crimson Tide transfer Richard Young and Sacramento State Hornets transfer Damian Henderson II, will surpass that modest mark in 2026.Young was never a factor at Alabama during a modern historical low point at the position in Tuscaloosa. When you think about Kalen DeBoer’s toothless Crimson Tide rushing attack, remember that Young couldn’t even get extended looks in the room. Even in limited action that was mostly in blowouts, Young had just four yards per carry.Henderson has more potential, though it’s important to note that his competition in the Big Sky largely lacked beyond the Montana Grizzlies. Still, against Montana, Henderson averaged 5.6 yards per carry. Sacramento State hung tough in that game. Importantly for Henderson, he’ll have former Hornets head coach Brennan Marion coming from Northern California with him, not to mention right guard Jose Soto joining Yahya Attia to make up an intriguing interior offensive line as well.Relying on an FCS transfer to fix what has been a problem for three straight years is a gamble, to say the least. Truthfully, though, what else does Coach Prime and Co. have to lose? It’s been bleak in the backfield outside of the QB position. What is Colorado’s best rushing performance under Deion Sanders?93 yards is the most rushing yards a Buffs running back has had since Coach Prime became Colorado’s head coach. Isaiah Augustave, who’s since transferred to the South Carolina Gamecocks, had that on October 26, 2024, against the Cincinnati Bearcats.Sanders doesn’t call plays, but he’s one of the men who green-lights the team’s NIL salary structure. He has decidedly lacked focus on the run game, focusing more on recruiting strong QBs, blindside tackles, and receivers. It worked when he had his son, Shedeur, under center and breaking records, Heisman winner Travis Hunter as one of several NFL-caliber weapons in the receiving corps, and the top offensive tackle, Jordan Seaton, in the 2024 class on the blindside. It hasn’t worked otherwise. We'll see if an emphasis on the run could change the narrative in 2026.More Stories:- Deion Sanders is up to his old tricks with his latest recruiting commitment- Deion Sanders receives support for legitimate gripe with Jacksonville Jaguars- ESPN believes Deion Sanders got major offseason decision right

Darren Till has arrived in bareknuckle – and he says anyone can get it.In the BKFC 90 co-main event Saturday, Till (1-0) overcame adversity caused by Aaron Chalmers (2-1), to finish the fight with a round-opening straight left hand. The TKO stoppage came at 0:22 of Round 2 at Utilita Arena in Birmingham, England.Till had been clipped by a short left hand that dropped him to a knee midway through Round 1. He seemed to bounce back without issue and the time between rounds only worked in his favor. The first punch he threw in Round 2 was the final one of the fight. Chalmers crumpled backward, and then forward onto all fours.DARREN TILL ABSOLUTELY FOLDS AARON CHALMERS 🦍#BKFC90 | Live NOW on BKFC+ & YouTube PPV pic.twitter.com/8Y3wlen9gO— Bare Knuckle FC (@bareknucklefc) May 30, 2026CHALMERS DROPS TILL!#BKFC90 | Live NOW on BKFC+ & YouTube PPV pic.twitter.com/uUfebDEaVA— Bare Knuckle FC (@bareknucklefc) May 30, 2026Till, 33, wins his bareknuckle boxing debut. Arsenal 'pain' will fuel fire after Champions League heartbreak
"Pain." That was the first word out of Mikel Arteta's mouth in his post-match news conference when asked how he would sum up the Champions League final defeat to Paris St-Germain in Budapest. On Sunday, Arsenal will get on an open-top bus parade to celebrate their Premier League title, less than 24 hours after their final heartbreak. The Gunners, who were unbeaten in the Champions League this season heading into Saturday's final, missed out on becoming European invincibles with their penalty shootout defeat.Arsenal are hurting but they will fly back from Hungary early on Sunday before joining their fans to celebrate a season to be proud of.Before the game manager Arteta said he wanted to use the Premier League success as a platform to reach bigger destinations and to aim for more silverware. But unfortunately, his side fell at the final hurdle in their pursuit of a first European trophy, in their first final in the competition since 2006.Arsenal produced a battling display but lacked attacking quality as PSG dominated with 75% possession and eventually won on penalties as centre-back Gabriel skied his penalty in the shootout. The Gunners have still had an excellent season, winning the Premier League for the first time in 22 years, but could the manner of the defeat be what pushes Arsenal on next season? PSG go back-to-back and join 'greatest of all time'Why crucial penalty miss was 'cruel blow' for Arsenal standout Gabriel'We're going to have to show that ambition'The Arsenal manager and players understandably looked dejected at the full-time whistle. "It is very tough to accept when you are so consistent all the way to the final and in the end you lose the trophy on penalties," Arteta said, before mentioning the decision not to give Arsenal a penalty in the second half when Noni Madueke tangled with Nuno Mendes."I watched all the penalties in the competition in the last 72 hours to understand what a penalty is and what is not, and that easily can be a penalty," said the Spaniard."But it is if, if, if. It is not what happened. "We need to do better, we have to improve and find different margins to get the outcome that we want."Arteta has already turned his mind to next season and helping Arsenal return to this stage."First of all I will take a few days with my family and they will start the process to review what we've done," he said. "We'll start to make some very important decisions if we want to reach another level. "And we're going to have to show that ambition because we are more than capable of doing it, but it's going to demand us to be very ambitious, very fast and very smart."Arsenal spent around £250m in last summer's transfer window and they look set to invest again, with a midfielder, left winger and striker all targets this summer. "They are 100% not going away," Nedum Onouha told BBC Sport. "They have shown this season and last season that they are good enough to go deep in the Champions League. "Even though they have lost they are still one of the best teams in Europe."UCL Debrief: Arsenal beaten, PSG go back-to-back!Arsenal can still enjoy their parade Arsenal have played the most games in European Cup/Champions League history without winning the trophy (226) [Getty Images]Arsenal will celebrate their Premier League title win on Sunday in front of their supporters in north London. "If you'd offered them at the start of the season - that they would win the Premier League title and lose the Champions League final by a penalty kick, then it is not a bad season, it is a great season and I mean a really great season," Pat Nevin told BBC Sport."Let's remember they have lost tonight but they are the Premier League winners," Onouha added. "They have got their parade to look forward to and I don't think there will be any fewer people turning up tomorrow just because they have lost the Champions League final. "I think the club is in a great position, the manager has been there for many years now and he has a bunch of players who are still very very hungry, even though they have been successful."The review of the Arsenal squad will come in the summer but this team has progressed so much from the one that Arteta took over in 2019. Bukayo Saka is the last player left from that squad and Arteta said it has been a "joy" to share this season with his players and staff. Arsenal have looked at how they could generate money in the coming transfer window by potential player sales. There is also a group of exciting youngsters, including 19-year-old Myles Lewis-Skelly - who started in Budapest - Ethan Nwaneri, 19, and 16-year-olds Max Dowman and Marli Salmon who could emerge as first-team regulars in the coming seasons."It is cruel for Arsenal fans, but it is inevitable that this club win the Champions League," European football expert Julien Laurens said on 5 Live. "Mikel Arteta will see the positives because that is the kind of guy he is. Arsenal are getting closer and closer."And for Arteta, despite the pain, says he is ready to celebrate what has been a big step for his Arsenal side."I already know how they [the fans] feel about the team. I want to thank them for everything they've done for us throughout the season.""Difficult moments like this, they've been with us. It's been a joy to see the reaction they've had when we've been able to win a league after 22 years. "It hurts a lot for them not to win it today because I can't even imagine what would have happened."We all had a huge desire to win it and tomorrow we'll have a great day, I'm sure."Latest Arsenal news, analysis and fan viewsAsk about Arsenal - what do you want to know?

Baker's regional hurdles title part of big day for Shelby Whippets boys
PIQUA — Shelby junior Gavin Baker wasn’t going into the Division III regional championship 110-meter hurdle race looking to win.Top 5 would have been just enough for him so he could advance to state where he was going to go for it all. But, Baker outraced the entire field by posting the winning time of 14.50 seconds besting second place by .31 seconds. He will take it.MADISON SOFTBALL STATE BOUND: Madison Rams win first regional softball championship since 1995“The process going into today was just to get my snappiness down,” Baker said. “I haven’t been very snappy during the postseason so that is something I am going to keep working on before next week.”Baker has been trying to find that snappiness and may have found it on Saturday, May 30 at Piqua High School during the regional championship meet. Or maybe he found it in the week leading up when he and the rest of the Whippets had an unorthodox practice week.“I was lucky enough to be able to run the race that I did,” Baker said. “It was a close one at the beginning, but I am happy I came out with a win. I have been working very hard and event went over to a joint practice with Colonel Crawford because our coaches wanted us to hear different voices. It helped so much.”The win qualified Baker for the state championships next week at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium on the campus of The Ohio State University. He is also going as a member of the 4x100-meter relay team that took third at regionals with a 42.67 despite missing one of their key runners in Brayden DeVito.Brady Bowman, Luke Blevins, Renner Gano and Baker did enough to nab one of the Top 5 qualifying spots in the event.“It has been so nice to see the process pay off,” Baker said. “I would have loved to have repeated in the 4x100, but give Luke Blevins a ton of credit for stepping in and helping us qualify for state. He is an amazing team player and a talented freshman.”Baker is a returning All-Ohioan in the 110-hurdles after finishing sixth last year with a 14.56 in the state finals. He was also part of the sixth-place 4x100 team that posted a 42.61 to earn All-Ohio honors. He would love nothing more than to add two more All-Ohio honors to his collection.Shelby field event specialists also making trip to stateBaker will be far from alone in Columbus. To go along with his 4x100 relay teammates, sophomore Clayton Mitchell punched his ticket to state in the boys shot put competition by taking third overall with a toss of 55-09.75.Senior Gavin Miller is also moving on to Columbus in the boys high jump after he took fifth place clearing 6-03 for a new personal best at the perfect time. Both Mitchell and Miller are making their first appearances at state.jfurr@usatodayco.com740-244-9934X: @JakeFurr11This article originally appeared on Mansfield News Journal: Baker's regional hurdles title part of big day for Shelby Whippets boys

BKFC 90 Highlights! Darren Till Survives Early Knockdown Scare, Delivers Bareknuckle KO
Darren Till fought through an early scare to deliver a memorable knockout finish in his bareknuckle boxing debut earlier tonight (Sat., May 30, 2026) at BKFC 90 from inside Utilita Arena in Birmingham, England, as the former UFC welterweight title challenger stopped Aaron Chalmers with a nasty second-round knockout.Despite not serving as the event’s headliner, Saturday’s BKFC 90 card in England was built around the debut of Till. After all, the English fighter was fairly popular during his time with UFC from 2015-2022 and has remained a valuable combat sports hand for hire. Adding someone of Till’s caliber to the roster was a great move by Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship (BKFC).Even co-owner Conor McGregor rolled out some extra knockout bonuses for Till’s debut at BKFC 90.Till, who produced a 4-0 record in boxing since his departure from UFC, came into Saturday night in the best shape of his life. The veteran was hoping his hard work outside of the ring would help his efforts in his bareknuckle debut and allow him to make a lasting impression. That’s exactly what Till did. The UFC veteran may have a suffered a brief knockdown along the way, but he still got the knockout finish against Chalmers early into the second round.Check out the video highlights below and let us know what you think of Till’s official BKFC debut!Darren Till just KO’d Aaron Chalmers right after getting dropped in bare knuckle 🤯(via @bareknucklefc) pic.twitter.com/lZuZKD8kBA— Happy Punch (@HappyPunch) May 30, 2026Stick with Mania for more BKFC news and coverage.

Tennessee softball takes down Texas Tech to advance to semifinals
May 30, 2026; Oklahoma City, OK, USA; Tennessee Lady Volunteers pitcher Karlyn Pickens (23) throws a pitch in the first inning against the Texas Tech Red Raiders during the NCAA Women’s College World Series at Devon Park. Mandatory Credit: Brett Rojo-Imagn Images | Brett Rojo-Imagn Images The Tennessee softball team had a huge game on tap for Saturday. After taking down the Texas Longhorns in the Women’s College World Series on Thursday, the team was due to take on Texas Tech on Saturday. The Red Raiders were the runner-up in 2025, and they’ve received plenty of attention over the year for their expensive roster. That roster includes Taylor Pannell, who starred for the Lady Vols in 2025, so it’s safe to say this game was highly anticipated. Well, this game was everything it was anticipated to be. Offense was hard to come by for both teams. Karlyn Pickens had an amazing game and allowed one hit through the first four innings. The Lady Vols had opportunities, but like the baseball team, they frequently left runners stranded. Then, in the bottom of the fifth, the Lady Vols got on the board thanks to a Taelyn Holley bomb. It was Holley’s sixth of the season, and it could not have come at a better time. Getting contributions from the bottom of your lineup is absolutely crucial, and it looked like this was all the Vols would need. Pickens pitched her way out of some tight situations late in the game. At one point, the Red Raiders had two runners on with Jasmy Burns up to bat. However, as Pickens has done time and time again, she successfully shut the door and kept the game 1-0. In the seventh, it looked like the game was over when Taylor Pannell was thrown out at home. However, after a challenge, it was revealed that Pannell avoided the tag and tied the game. We thus had some free softball in Oklahoma City, and it led to a couple more innings without offense. Finally, in the ninth, Tennessee’s Emma Clarke came up and hit a walk-off bomb to give the Lady Vols a 2-1 victory. The win means the Lady Vols advance to the semifinals. Tennessee will now await the winner of Texas and Texas Tech out of the loser’s bracket.

'We will come again' - fan reaction to Champions League final defeat
[BBC][Getty Images]We asked you how you're feeling after Arsenal were beaten on penalties by Paris St-Germain in the Champions League final. Here are some of your comments:Pablo: So many people were saying PSG would wipe the floor with us. They didn't, we went toe to toe - and in the end, the bitter pill of penalties. I'm incredibly proud of the boys. We'll come back stronger next year. COYG!Andy: The boys played well and did us proud. There's no disgrace in losing to the current champions in a penalty shootout - especially when nobody gave us a chance.David: It may be a loss in a Champions League final, but the season overall has been a success with winning the league. People might say Arsenal bottled it but, let's be honest, PSG are a very good side. Penalties are never an easy way to decide a game. We move on and regroup over the summer and prepare for the challenge ahead next season. We will come again. Come on, you Gunners!Louis: The best team won. Congrats to PSG. As an Arsenal fan, I was very frustrated with our tactics, sitting back and passing backwards and sideways. Only 25% possession and one shot on target says it all. Dreadful penalty misses.Larissa: It was a great effort. I just feel we could have been more brave in extra time to go for the win. Two poor penalties but it's fine lines. We had a great season - some good investment in the summer and we go again. Proud of the team. Will: Arsenal defended superbly, but maybe just lacked that bit of magic PSG possess. So unfair that Gabi was the one to miss the penalty because he has been our wall at the back all season.Lou: I remember back when we were still in the running for four trophies, my family asked me if I could have just one, which would I pick? I remember I said the Premier League; to sock it to Manchester City, who were smug in our faces when they overtook us three seasons ago, and to finally beat the bottle tag, stop saying 'maybe next time' and actually do it. Now, I'm sorry about the Champions League, but I'm still so proud those brave boys have got Premier League medals - and they deserve more in future years.Martin: So much nonsense talked about this game. Possession is not control. PSG looked devoid of ideas and played with a lot of fear because Arsenal's counter-attacks created the better chances. If there is a criticism of Arsenal, it's that they didn't have the courage to go for the jugular, when they were the more complete team. This is your Arsenal page. Dodgers to miss three-time Silver Slugger after hamstring injury
Dodgers to miss three-time Silver Slugger after hamstring injury originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Los Angeles Dodgers have looked up to the task of defending their World Series title, posting a 37-20 record, the second-best in the league and the best in the National League West. This is due to several key contributors stepping up, whether it’s Shohei Ohtani doing a job on both sides of the field, or Freddie Freeman putting in the work from the batter’s box, or Kyle Tucker being a solid offseason pick-up.This isn’t to exclude the efforts of Teoscar Hernandez, who has been big for Los Angeles this season, slashing a .276/.348/.436 throwing his 204 plate appearances this season, smashing seven home runs, and recording 31 RBIs as well. All of this production came to a screeching halt earlier on in the week, when Hernandez appeared to suffer from a hamstring injury. While there was some deliberation on what the extent of his injury was, it appears the verdict is in.Hernandez to miss some timeTeoscar Hernández said his Grade 1 diagnosis was the “best-case scenario” for his strained left hamstring. Said he’s estimated to miss about a month.— Fabian Ardaya (@FabianArdaya) May 30, 2026As reported by The Athletic’s Fabian Ardaya, Hernandez is slated to miss roughly a month of action due to a strained left hamstring. While missing some serious time in the middle of the season could be a worry for some players, the Dominican sees the grade one diagnosis on his hamstring as one of the more favorable outcomes, according to Ardaya. The Dodgers will play their first game without any possibility of Hernandez making an appearance on Saturday night, when they look to get the series victory against the Philadelphia Phillies.More MLB news:Braves predicted to trade Bryce Elder for Lars NootbaarJacob DeGrom is only 149 strikeouts from 2,000 for his careerThree ways Pirates' Paul Skenes could lose NL Cy Young AwardGiancarlo Stanton has an absurd 2-for-4 streak going on for YankeesMets didn’t want to trade Brett Baty while White Sox didn’t want Mark Vientos in Luis Robert Jr. tradeHow Blue Jays' Kazuma Okamoto is connected to Rockies' Tomoyuki SuganoRed Sox never close on Astros’ Isaac Paredes tradeShohei Ohtani deemed more valuable than Aaron Judge in recent ESPN discussion piece

Lazio End of the Season Awards: The Tops & Flops of a Chaotic 25/26 Campaign
Lazio End of the Season Awards: The Tops & Flops of a Chaotic 25/26 CampaignOver the past few decades, Lazio have unfortunately endured some forgettable campaigns. On the contrary, the 2025/26 season won’t be forgotten any time soon, but for all the wrong reasons. From the summer tranfer ban and the mid-season downsizing, to the never-ending injury crises and the scandulous refereeing incidents, through the fan protest, the empty stadium, and the back-and-forth nagging between Claudio Lotito and Maurizio Sarri, who insisted on airing the dirty laundry in public, this was certainly a season like no other (or at least we hope so).But despite all the negativity, this campaign still had its heroes, those who were willing to defy the circumstances and deliver enchanting moments that temporarily distracted the fans from their persisting misery. Therefore, it is time to acknowledge some of the club’s finest performers, while also mentioning those who weren’t able to meet the expectations. Most Improved: Oliver ProvstgaardLast season, Oliver Provstgaard arrived as a young and raw defender, and found himself at the very bottom of Marco Baroni’s pecking order. But after six months of adjustment, the Dane hit the ground running, beginning from the opening round when he filled in for the suspended Alessio Romagnoli. The 22-year-old hasn’t quite reached the levels of Romagnoli and Mario Gila, but considering his young age, his reliable performances at the back, and his limited number of mistakes, he certainly has the ability to become one of the best centre-backs in the league. Most Declined: Matias VecinoAt the end of last season, Lazio decided to extend Matias Vecino’s contract. But in hindsight, that would have been the best timing to part ways, even if the club wasn’t allowed to buy a replacement in the summer. The Uruguayan struggled for fitness, and even when he made it to the pitch, he was a far cry from the dynamic midfielder who played his heart out at various Serie A clubs for more than a decade. The 34-year-old ended up joining Celta Vigo in February after mutually rescinding his Lazio contract.Best Signing: Kenneth TaylorThis was a head-to-head between Kenneth Taylor and Edoardo Motta. But while the Italian youngster was a shrewd signing for sure, poaching a Netherlands international and a key Ajax player in the middle of the season was a brilliant coup from Fabiani. The Dutchman’s full debut ensued just days following his arrival in Rome, and he never looked back, cementing himself as an omnipresent figure in Sarri’s midfield for the rest of the season.Worst Signing: Petar RatkovAt €13 million, we might one day look back on this acquisition as a true bargain, as the young bomber still has time on his side. But unfortunately for Ratkov, his arrival encapsulated everything that is wrong at the club, including the lack of communication between the hierarchy and the manager who claimed he had never heard about the player before, while Lotito responded by telling Sarri to focus on the coaching and leave the recruiting for him and the club’s directors. The Serbian was thus stuck in the power struggle at Formello, and he paid the price by spending the second half of the campaign on the bench.Best Individual Performance: Edoardo Motta vs Atalanta (Coppa Italia)When an unsung Serie B goalkeeper joined Lazio in January, no one had imagined he would be the ultimate hero who would guide the club to the Coppa Italia final. With Ivan Provedel out with a season-ending injury, the young Motta had to step up, and it was instantly obvious that the custodian is destined for great things.Motta’s credentials were confirmed in his surreal display in Bergamo. His exceptional saves kept the Biancocelesti in the game, setting up penalty shootouts, where he incredibly saved four out of Atalanta’s five attempts.Worst Performance: Nuno Tavares vs Bologna (Serie A)Nuno Tavares certainly improved as the season progressed, but during the first half of the campaign, he was a complete liability at the back. The Portuguese left-back’s costly blunder gifted Roma the Derby della Capitale in September, but his struggles were even more evident against Bologna in December, when Sarri decided to haul him off at half-time after failing to contain Nadir Zortea and Riccardo Orsolini.Afterwards, the 26-year-old was dropped to the bench on nine straight occasions, before eventually retaining his place in the lineup after working on his overall game, especially the defensive phase.Best Moment: Tijjani Noslin’s Late Winner vs ParmaWith the team down to nine men, most Lazio fans would have gladly accepted a draw. However, Tijjani Noslin didn’t seem to know or care about the live odds, but instead marched forward in search of a late winner that stunned the Ennio Tardini, and absolutely delighted the Aquile everywhere.Worst Moment: The Empty Stadio OlimpicoThis wasn’t truly a moment in time, but a recurring sight that became increasingly agonizing with every passing week. It all began in late January, when the organized fan groups invited all the supporters to boycott the club’s home fixtures in a protest against Lotito, accusing him of putting his own interests above the club’s, and urging him to sell.Aside from the Serie A contest against AC Milan in March and the Coppa Italia final against Inter Milan, Lazio played in a virtually empty stadium for four months.Best Gesture: Lazio Fans Paying Homage After Final DefeatSince the Lazio ultras had opted against attending the final two Serie A fixtures against Roma and Pisa, the Coppa Italia final was their last chance to bid Pedro farewell on the pitch.Despite the disappointing defeat, the departing Spaniard was celebrated by his beloved supporters under the Curva Nord in a show of gratitude for an iconic career that included an extremely rare jump from one side of the River Tiber to the other.Best Player: Alessio RomagnoliTruth be told, this category could have been scrapped altogether due to the lack of suitable candidates. While several players delivered decent displays throughout the season, none of them produced a truly stellar campaign. But if he had to choose one, Romagnoli arguably wins it with his consistent and commanding displays at the back, even following the January soap opera and his collapsed transfer to Qatar. With no player surpassing the five-goal threshold, we can confidently write off the attackers. Taylor would have been a serious candidate had he started the campaign in Rome, and perhaps the same applies to Motta. As for Provedel, he would have also been considered had he remained fit during the second half of the season, while Toma Basic faded following his injury in February.Romagnoli’s defensive partner, Gila, was certainly his main challenger. On his day, the Spaniard was simply outstanding at the back, but his campaign was blemished by recurring injuries and blunders in the buildup. Therefore, Romagnoli was arguably Lazio’s best player in what could be his farewell campaign.

Teoscar Hernández expected to miss 1 month with hamstring strain, Dodgers place him on IL
Teoscar Hernández was officially placed on the 10-day injured list with a hamstring strain. the Los Angeles Dodgers announced on Friday.Speaking to reporters on Saturday, the veteran outfielder said that he expected to miss approximately one month of action with what was diagnosed as a Grade 1 strain of his left hamstring. With the strain being relatively mild, Hernández said he might be able to return to the Dodgers’ lineup sooner. However, he also does not want to rush his recovery and risk making his hamstring a lingering issue through the remainder of the season. Last season, Hernández sustained a left groin injury that sidelined him for two weeks. However, the groin remained an issue after his return and affected his performance. Hernández finished with a .247/.284/.484 slash average, his worst numbers in the past six seasons. Play 2026 Soccer Pick 'Em with FOX One and make your picks for the world's biggest soccer tournamentHernández, 33, strained his hamstring during Wednesday’s 4-1 win over the Colorado Rockies. Running to first base on a ground ball to shortstop, Hernández appeared to sustain the injury as he reached the bag. As he jogged down the line, he grabbed the back of his left leg.Upon returning to the dugout, Hernández was visibly upset as he realized how hurt he was. He slammed his helmet several times before walking toward the tunnel. In 51 games this season, slashed .276/.348/.436 with seven home runs, eight doubles and 31 RBI through 204 plate appearances. "Once he gets going, we're hoping it'll be a quick return, and we'll try to get him some rehab at-bats," Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes told MLB.com’s Sonja Chen. "When that happened last year, we probably rushed it a bit on that front,” he added. “So we're kind of getting treatment for the next however many days, and then as he starts getting into things, how he's responding, we'll see. But it's not as severe as we had thought it was."To fill in for Hernández, the Dodgers called up Ryan Ward from Triple-A Oklahoma City. Ranked No. 19 among the organization’s prospects by MLB.com, Ward compiled a .254/.379/.418 slash average with six homers, nine doubles and 31 RBI in 214 PAs. In an earlier stint with the Dodgers this season, Ward, 28, hit 2-for-6 with one RBI in two games.

French Open recap Day 7: After men’s draw chaos, women’s draw adds some upsets to the mix
Follow The Athletic’s French Open coverageWelcome to the French Open briefing, where The Athletic will explain the stories behind the stories on each day of the tournament. On Day 7, the women’s draw got in on the chaos, there were just too many sets and the tournament’s breakout star had a good soccer result.Has the women’s draw opened up now?Speaking in a news conference Saturday after knocking out No. 9 seed Victoria Mboko, 2025 Australian Open Madison Keys had some words for the players left in the wide-open men’s draw.“I think we’ve seen in the men’s scores today that they’re all really worried about who is going to be in the finals. So we’ve seen lots of men’s tennis today,” she said.“All jokes aside, I do think we’re kind of seeing the men deal with it kind of for the first time in a really long time where it feels completely wide open. Like I said, they should really get their heads around it.”Keys isn’t wrong — but Saturday at Roland Garros, the women’s draw finally opened up a little bit, too. Defending champion Coco Gauff fell to Austria’s Anastasia Potapova, No. 6 seed Amanda Anisimova went out to Diane Parry of France and Keys herself took down Mboko. All of a sudden, seven top-10 seeds became four — and Iga Świątek was left as the only player in the draw to have lifted a French Open title. The composition of the draw may leaven just how open it is. In world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka’s half, she and four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka are the only top-20 seeds remaining, and they meet in the fourth round. Osaka won a tight, tense, intriguing three-set match against No. 17 seed Iva Jović, 7-6(5), 6-7(3), 6-4, before Sabalenka dispatched Daria Kasatkina 6-0, 7-5.In the bottom half, Świątek meets in-form No. 15 seed Marta Kostyuk, while Elina Svitolina (7) and Belinda Bencic (11) clash. Mirra Andreeva (8) faces the unseeded Jil Teichmann. There won’t be quite so much worry as the men’s draw about who is going to be in the finals, but there will be bucketloads of quality women’s tennis.— James HansenHow many sets is too many sets? The player most associated with this French Open years from now may well be João Fonseca.Because the 19-year-old Brazilian was already such a promising young figure in men’s tennis, and because Novak Djokovic is an all-time great, Fonseca’s five-set win Friday could take on heavy meaning in the years to come, à la Roger Federer’s upset of Pete Sampras at Wimbledon in 2001.If that’s the case, what to make of Juan Manuel Cerúndolo? The world No. 56 from Argentina arguably deserves a spot in the history books (or at least deserves to be the answer to a trivia question) for backing up his upset of world No. 1 Jannik Sinner on Thursday with a marathon win of his own..Cerundolo beat Martin Landaluce 6-4, 6-7(7), 7-6(4), 6-7(4), 7-6(8) Saturday in a whopping five hours and 58 minutes all the way over on Court 7, to log the third-longest match at Roland Garros since 1996.The other two longest matches were all played before Roland Garros adopted the fifth-set tiebreak.Corentin Moutet and Lorenzo Giustino’s six-hour-and-five-minute match in 2020 occupies the second spot, and Fabrice Santoro and Arnaud Clement’s six-hour-and-33-minute epic in the 2004 French Open holds the record.Cerúndolo may not have played the most taxing tennis match of his life against a heat-weakened Sinner Thursday, but those types of matches often leave players with an emotional hangover.“Hahahaha I can’t take it anymore, 6 hours what a madness,“ he wrote on social media. “Super happy, thanks to everyone for the support. Time to sleep to see if we make it to the round of 16 on one leg.”At least Cerúndolo won’t be the only one hurting come the fourth round — his was one of five endurance matches Saturday. There were nine out of 16 across the third round — the most at a Grand Slam in the Open Era.Cerúndolo’s next opponent, Matteo Berrettini of Italy, took 5 hours and 13 minutes to win his meeting with another Argentine, Francisco Comesaña. Berrettini triumphed 7-6(3), 5-7, 6-7(4), 6-4, 7-6(13), with the Italian winning a 28-point deciding tiebreak.Later, Berrettini’s compatriot Matteo Arnaldi defeated Belgium’s Raphaël Collingnon, who upset Ben Shelton in the previous round, 6-4, 6-7(5), 5-7, 6-4, 7-6(4). That took a modest four hours and 58 minutes, before Frances Tiafoe got on the five-set train, coming from two down to beat Portuguese qualifier Jaime Faria 4-6, 6-7(2), 7-6(4), 6-1, 6-2.Cerúndolo’s brother, Francisco, wasn’t so lucky. The No. 25 seed went down to Zachary Svajda of the U.S. in five sets, depriving him of a serious opportunity in this half of the draw.Something must’ve been in the water at Roland Garros. Let’s hope it was electrolytes.Jajajaja no puedo mas 6 horas que locura. Super feliz, agradecer a todos por el apoyo. Toca dormir a ver si llegamos en una pierna octavos😂😂😂 pic.twitter.com/3eblX7s4bQ— Juan Manuel Cerúndolo (@jmcerundolo) May 30, 2026— Ava WallaceHow did Moïse Kouame win again in defeat?Moïse Kouame leapt and thrashed at the air.At 6-5 down in the fourth set he toyed, cat-and-mouse style, with Chile’s Alejandro Talibo. It was a pattern of play befitting of an experienced pro on tour, not a 17-year-old in his first Grand Slam main draw.Given Kouame was coming off the back of a five-set match lasting just under five hours, while Tabilo was fresh having received a walkover in the second round, there was no reason for Kouame to push the projected world No. 31 so far.And yet he did.Kouame came flying out of the blocks to take the first set, but after two hours and 30 minutes, he found himself down 2-1 in sets and 4-2 in games. Tabilo was rolling and during tight games which went to deuce, Kouame showed a glimpse of frustration, remonstrating against himself as he committed more errors. But as he has shown in this tournament, the Parisian’s resilience should not be questioned. “I always knew I had a good mentality and could overturn matches because I did it in my youth,” he said in his news conference. At the same time that PSG was launching a comeback of its own, converting a penalty to level 1-1 in the Champions League final in Budapest, Kouame, a huge childhood PSG fan, came back from 2-4 to lead 5-4 in the fourth set.The crowd bowed in deference to the teenager, chanting “Mo-ïse, Mo-ïse”. Often the umpire had to remind the crowd with a curt “s’il vous plaît’ as they cheered every one of Tabilo’s missed first serves. As much as it was a hostile atmosphere, Kouame’s ability to channel that emotion at such a young age is remarkable. The fans rallied him with the start of France’s national anthem, screaming “Aux armes!” (A call to arms). Kouame found his arsenal in high pressure moments, saving three match points in the fourth set tie-break, but Tabilo ultimately found a way to a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(11-9) win.It was one step too far, but that should take nothing away from the Parisian’s commendable run. When the world rankings update Monday, he will have ascended over 100 places.Kouame, who came into the press room sporting the back-to-back Champions League winners’ home shirt having watched his team beat Arsenal on penalties, smiled despite his defeat. “It can only fill me with joy,” he said about PSG’s European triumph. In the future, he may taste such success.— Charlotte HarpurOther notable results on Day 7:Flavio Cobolli (10) delivered a statement win in his very open half of the draw, beating Learner Tien (18) of the U.S. 6-2, 6-2, 6-3.Russia’s Anna Kalinskaya (22) recovered from a medical timeout for heat illness and a 6-0 set to beat Colombia’s Camila Osorio 6-3, 0-6, 6-2. Osorio wasn’t too impressed at the handshake.Félix Auger-Aliassime (4) of Canada recovered from losing the opening set to American Brandon Nakashima (31) to win 5-7, 6-1, 7-6(4), 7-6(1).Diana Shnaider (25) defeated Oleksandra Oliynykova in a charged matchup 7-5, 6-1. Ahead of the match, Ukraine’s Oliynykova had directly criticized Shnaider, who is Russian, for taking part in a state-sponsored tennis exhibition.Shot of the daySorry to Amanda Anisimova, but when a serve goes this long, it must be immortalized:Drop Shots🇫🇷 How Diane Parry stunned Amanda Anisimova to send Court Philippe-Chatrier wild.🪧 How Ukraine’s fiercest defender in sports made a statement at the French Open.🇧🇷 ICYMI: João Fonseca pulled off the biggest win of his career against Novak Djokovic last night.🧱 The upset meant Novak Djokovic’s clearest path yet to a 25th Grand Slam title ran out of red clay.🪶 And in the most crucial game of the match, Fonseca produced a deftness for which he is not known just when he needed it.Up next: Fourth round🎾 Women’s singles: Marta Kostyuk (15) vs. Iga Świątek (3)5 a.m. ET on TNT, HBO MaxKostyuk is on a 15-match win-streak on clay, while Świątek is still fully finding her feet on the courts she has made her own the past several years. Whether or not this match is played under a roof due to rain will have an impact, as while both players enjoy the hot conditions — Ukraine’s Kostyuk for ball speed, Świątek for high bounce — an outdoor, grey clay encounter will be weighted heavily in the Polish four-time champion’s favor.🎾 Men’s singles: Rafael Jódar (27) vs. Pablo Carreño Busta7 a.m. ET on TNT, HBO MaxJódar has passed tennis test after tennis test this year, and now he arrives at one of the toughest: Being favorite for a hugely consequential match against an opponent with experience of getting over the line. Carreño Busta, 34, is part of some Grand Slam second-week lore: the 2020 U.S. Open, when Novak Djokovic lost early to leave the rest of the field with a sudden and unexpected opportunity.🎾 Women’s singles: Elina Svitolina (7) vs. Belinda Bencic (11)7 a.m. ET on TNT, HBO MaxOn paper, Svitolina’s superior clay-court record, including her Italian Open title ahead of this tournament, makes her a strong favorite, especially as the slower conditions will tamp down Bencic’s flat power. Those conditions will also give Bencic opportunities to tee off on Svitolina’s serve, and this match is quite likely to feature a lot of breaks. The Ukrainian leads the head-to-head 4-2, with four consecutive wins.🎾 Men’s singles: Casper Ruud (15) vs. João Fonseca (28)2:15 p.m. ET on TNTA heavyweight contest for the night session. Ruud has the French Open experience and many more big matches in his legs and brain; Fonseca has the adrenalin of the biggest win of his career and overwhelming weight of shot. In this match, the slow conditions will give both men time to set up and blast on their forehands, so the deftness that Fonseca showed in the late stages of his win over Djokovic — and his superiority in backhand-to-backhand exhanges — could be key.French Open women’s draw 2026 First Round Second Round Third Round Fourth Round Quarterfinals Semifinals Finals🇧🇾1A.
