Real Madrid midfield legends take sides in upcoming presidential election
Real Madrid midfield legends take sides in upcoming presidential electionReal Madrid’s presidential election on June 7th has become the biggest talking point in Spanish football, as the club brace itself for its first such election in 20 years. The stakes are high, with businessman Enrique Riquelme ready to take on Florentino Perez’s empire, even enticing members with the promise of signing Rodri if he becomes president. The odds, though, still heavily favour Florentino Perez, as he not only enjoys institutional favour but is also close with some of the legends of the club, including Toni Kroos.Modric and Casemiro support PerezModric has implied endorsement for Perez. (Photo by Marco Luzzani/Getty Images)While Kroos is a known admirer of Perez, the Real Madrid president also received support from two more of Real Madrid’s midfield legends, in the form of Casemiro and Luka Modric. As reported by Mundo Deportivo, both have both taken to Instagram to publicly declare their support for Florentino Perez ahead of the vote, posting photos of themselves alongside the president from their time at the club. This is a considerable show of support for Perez, as both Modric and Casemiro carry significant weight in Real Madrid’s legacy.Alongside Toni Kroos, the pair formed the midfield backbone of Zinedine Zidane’s legendary side that won three consecutive Champions League titles between 2016 and 2018, one of the most celebrated periods in Real Madrid’s illustrious history. Will Modric and Kroos return to Real Madrid? Will Modric and Kroos return to Real Madrid? (Photo by Fran Santiago/Getty Images)What is more interesting is that both Modric and Kroos have been linked with a potential return to Real Madrid, in a technical role.Perez is already trying hard to convince Kroos to come back as part of Real Madrid’s technical setup next season, and it is likely that the German will be open to the move.Meanwhile, Real Madrid are also open to welcoming back Modric in a technical role, with the Croatian international likely to hang up his boots after the FIFA World Cup 2026 this summer.

    'Lacked that authority Jurgen had'
[Getty Images]There were question marks over whether the players truly believed in Arne Slot's methods. One club source, who was also at Liverpool during Jurgen Klopp's tenure, said: "Arne's a great person but you always felt he lacked that authority Jurgen had and that became more evident when things weren't going well on the pitch."The departure of veterans Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson and now Ibrahima Konate is telling too.Slot was never going to be Klopp but he won the Premier League title at the first time of asking and deserves immense credit for that. For that alone, he will be a part of Liverpool's illustrious history. The understanding is that FSG initially backed Slot to rebuild the supporter faith that has waned considerably during this campaign's struggles. But, as the season concluded, the belief became that delaying the decision which looked increasingly inevitable would be unfair on the squad and damaging to preparations for 2026-27.Andoni Iraola is the leading candidate and contact has already been made, with his immediate availability also playing a part in severing ties with Slot. For Slot, there is no bad blood with Liverpool, but he is of the belief that he has been dealt a tough card with the situation this past season.Liverpool's points tally fell from 84 in 2024-25 to 60 in 2025-26; with the swing of minus 24 the biggest drop by any ever-present Premier League side across two campaigns. There was no sign of Liverpool reversing that shift in the last few months of the season.Slot finished his first campaign lifting the Premier League trophy in front of the Kop and ended his second sitting alone in the dugout. That was six days ago, when it seemed entirely like Liverpool were sticking with the Dutchman. But modern-day football is brutal. This is a club firmly in transition and, sadly for Slot, Liverpool want a new man to manage that change.[BBC]

Man United to battle PL rivals for 29-year-old “true professional” from Bundesliga
Man United to battle PL rivals for 29-year-old “true professional” from BundesligaManchester United are hoping to sign Waldemar Anton from Borussia Dortmund at the end of the season. The 29-year-old German defender has been excellent for them, and he could prove to be an outstanding addition to the Manchester United defensive unit. They could use more depth at the back, especially now that they have secured Champions League qualification for the upcoming campaign. They will be up against world-class attacking players, and they need quality defenders at their disposal. The 29-year-old has shown his quality in Germany, and he has the physicality for English football as well. He could help Manchester United improve defensively. Apart from his quality as a central defender, he is a leader in the dressing room and could help Manchester United on and off the pitch.“Waldi is a leader – a quiet leader,” Niko Kovac said (h/t SportWitness). “Not someone who seeks the limelight, but someone who does his job behind the scenes, both internally and on the pitch. He’s a true professional through and through”.Meanwhile, the German club values him highly, and they might not want to sell the 29-year-old this summer. Manchester United will have to put forward an attractive proposal to get the deal done.Meanwhile, they will face competition from Aston Villa. The West Midlands club will be competing in the Champions League next year, and they need to improve at the back. They were quite vulnerable defensively in the Premier League this season. Anton could help them tighten up at the back. Both clubs have the resources to pay a premium for the 29-year-old defender, and it will be interesting to see where he ends up.

Hundreds arrested after violent clashes with French police as PSG fans celebrate Champions League title
Hundreds of people were arrested in France as celebrations for Paris Saint-Germain’s second Champions League title descended into violence on Saturday night, with one group attempting to storm a police station.Fans began celebrating at the final whistle after PSG's victory over Arsenal on penalties in a dramatic final held earlier in Budapest, Hungary.Thousands of fans had gathered across the French capital, with an estimated 20,000 congregating on the Champs-Élysées, where police worked to manage the crowds.Dozens of fans marched near the Arc de Triomphe, setting off flares and blaring car horns, before the festivities turned sour, leading to the arrests. However, the Paris police prefecture said smaller groups caused disturbances in various locations, with some vandalising shops and setting fires. One police officer was injured. By 10pm, 45 people were taken into custody (AP)Those who attempted to storm a police station in the posh 8th Arrondissement neighbourhood were dispersed, police said. By 11pm, police had made more than 130 arrests. A police spokesperson said six vehicles and two storefronts had been damaged by.By Sunday morning, the French Interior Minister said there had been 416 arrests across France, with 283 in the Paris area alone, according to BFMTV.The main ring road surrounding Paris was briefly blockaded by a crowd before police dispersed it. Police also said one bakery and a restaurant were damaged. Officers also contained about 1,000 people gathered near the PSG stadium in the 16th Arrondissement and cleared barricades made from bicycles. In May last year, when police made more than 500 arrests across France following PSG's first title, Paris was on high alert, with 8,000 police officers deployed across the city.

Robert Horry: Austin Reaves has to do what's best for him
Los Angeles Lakers star guard Austin Reaves is almost certainly going to opt out of his contract and become a free agent this summer. While some fans of the team want him to be sent out in a sign-and-trade in order to give the roster more balance, many want Reaves to stay put on a new contract. While the Lakers will have plenty of salary cap space, they also will want to re-sign some of their other key players, including LeBron James. The Brooklyn Netshave been mentioned as an outside team that could make Reaves a big offer in free agency, and overall, rival executives reportedly feel he could command $40 million a year.Robert Horry, a seven-time NBA champion who won three rings with the Lakers, said on ESPN L.A. that Reaves has to ultimately do what's best for him.“I think with Reaves, he has to do what is best for him,” Horry said.“Sometimes fans forget that. We want him to stay, but at the end of the day, his life. He has to do what is best for him. Let’s say some team is going to offer you $180 million, and the Lakers are going to offer you $120 million. That is $40 million.“... He got to make up that $40 million,” Horry jokingly added. “... I love AR. At the end of the day, you have to do what’s best for you.”One way or another, Reaves is going to get paid handsomely this summer. However, it is very questionable whether he would take a bigger contract to play for a team like the Nets that went 20-62 this season and won't be much better next season, even with him.He will still receive the kind of money that will make him and his family financially secure for many generations to come if he stays with the Lakers. But one thing money cannot buy is an NBA championship ring, and Reaves seems like the kind of man who has a strong desire to get one. This article originally appeared on LeBron Wire: Robert Horry: Austin Reaves has to do what's best for him

More muscle, less fat, same deadly swing: How Bhuvneshwar Kumar is defying age at 36
While the cricket world has spent the IPL season marvelling at 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi - and rightly so - another remarkable story has quietly unfolded at the opposite end of the age spectrum. At 36, an age when fast bowlers are usually managing declining pace, recurring injuries or retirement plans, Bhuvneshwar Kumar continues to deliver for Royal Challengers Bengaluru with the same discipline and consistency that have defined his career for more than a decade.Which naturally raises the question: how has the fast bowler survived, and thrived, in the IPL for this long? The answer, according to the man responsible for much of Bhuvneshwar's fitness work, lies in years of meticulous planning and discipline that most people never see.TimesofIndia.com spoke to Bhuvneshwar's personal Strength and Conditioning Coach, Surya Pratap Yadav, who has worked extensively on his fitness. When asked how Bhuvi, even at the age of 36, continues to bowl with the same intent and consistency, he pointed towards a transformation that has happened away from the spotlight. The Work Behind the Overs"Our primary focus has been reducing body fat while increasing muscle mass. As athletes age, muscle loss becomes a concern, so we worked extensively on strength training, protein intake, and supplementation.“Bhuvneshwar's body fat percentage has come down from 19% to 14%, while maintaining his weight, which indicates muscle gain. His strength levels have improved significantly, and that has helped increase force production and running speed," Surya Pratap told TimesofIndia.com.Bhuvneshwar, the swing king, has been one of RCB's standout performers over the last two seasons. Long after his last India appearance in November 2022, he continues to remain among the most dependable fast bowlers in Indian cricket. But the fitness gains are only part of the story. At an age when bowlers often struggle with niggles, hamstring issues and recurring breakdowns, Bhuvneshwar has remained remarkably durable."Discipline is the biggest factor. He understands his body's weak points and works on them proactively. We dedicate nearly an hour every day to rehab and injury-prevention exercises. Along with that, we focus heavily on recovery, hydration, sleep, protein intake, and supplements. All of these factors help him stay fit throughout the season," Surya Pratap said. The Numbers of LongevityThe numbers suggest that this discipline has translated into one of the most remarkable longevity stories the IPL has witnessed.Since making his IPL debut in 2011, no fast bowler has taken more wickets than Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Only Yuzvendra Chahal has claimed more wickets overall during that period. No pacer has played more IPL matches than Bhuvneshwar's 205. The next best among fast bowlers is Jasprit Bumrah with 158.No fast bowler has bowled more overs than Bhuvneshwar's 762.4. Bumrah, despite being one of the premier bowlers of his generation, trails him by more than 160 overs at 605.1.Only Dwayne Bravo and Bhuvneshwar have managed multiple IPL seasons with 25 or more wickets among fast bowlers. Only a select group comprising Lasith Malinga, Kagiso Rabada, Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar have recorded four separate 20-wicket IPL campaigns. The rate at which IPL is going, it seems like it's built for drag racers: young legs, fresh shoulders and explosive peaks. But Bhuvneshwar belongs to a different category altogether. He is the sporting equivalent of a Le Mans endurance machine - built not for one blistering lap, but for years of relentless punishment. No Shortcuts, No ExperimentsWhen Bhuvneshwar made his IPL debut in 2011, Dale Steyn was at the peak of his powers, Zaheer Khan was India's pace spearhead, Munaf Patel was a World Cup winner and Morne Morkel, Vinay Kumar and Umesh Yadav were among the leading wicket-takers in the competition. Fifteen seasons later, most of those names belong to another era.Bhuvneshwar, though, even after being dropped from the national setup, has never stepped away from the grind.Between 2022 and 2026, Bhuvneshwar transitioned from an India regular into a domestic workhorse. While selectors moved on, he continued leading Uttar Pradesh's bowling attack in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy while remaining a key figure in the IPL.One of the reasons he has been able to sustain those workloads is his refusal to experiment during the season. When asked whether Bhuvi changes his diet during the IPL, considering the demands of the tournament, his coach revealed that the routine remains largely unchanged. The commitment extends far beyond the season as well."No. We avoid introducing anything new during the season. Any supplement, training method, or recovery protocol is tested well in advance. During the tournament, the goal is to keep the body fresh and allow the player to focus on cricket rather than experimenting with new fitness routines," Pratap told TOI.Bhuvneshwar picked up 29 wickets across the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy over the last two years and followed it up with 43 wickets for RCB across the last two IPL seasons.According to his coach, none of it happens by accident."A lot more than people realise, he spends 6-7 hours a day training. That includes gym sessions, rehabilitation work, recovery routines, batting practice, bowling practice, and training in different environments. Even if it isn't always visible on social media, the amount of effort he puts in every day is tremendous," Surya Pratap Yadav told TOI.One of the Last Men Still RunningWith fans and experts increasingly calling for his return to the national side, Bhuvneshwar has remained characteristically calm about the discussion.Reflecting on his long journey in Indian cricket, he recently explained why he no longer spends time chasing distant goals.“I am not thinking about India’s comeback. It has been many years since I stopped keeping or making long-term goals because whenever I did that, it never worked for me. I am happy that I have played 200 matches and taken so many wickets in the powerplay and at the death. I think it is all a reward for what I have done over the years.“There have been good years and bad years. Honestly, at this point in time, I am not feeling anything special. Of course, I would be lying if I said that I will not feel it later on. Once I stop playing, I think these will be memories that will come in handy later. But at this point in time, for me, I think it is very normal," Bhuvneshwar had said in a video posted by RCB.And that perhaps explains why he has lasted this long.He is no longer chasing milestones. Nor is he trying to prove a point. What remains is the work - the daily routines, the gym sessions, the rehab drills and the discipline that have quietly sustained a career spanning nearly two decades. His coach echoed the same sentiment."Every cricketer wants to represent India. Bhuvneshwar continues to work extremely hard and remains fully committed to his cricket. His dedication to training and preparation reflects that ambition," Surya added. The IPL will always celebrate its newest stars. It should. But every now and then, it also reminds us of the value of endurance.Fifteen years after he began, while generations of fast bowlers have come and gone, Bhuvneshwar Kumar remains one of the last men still running. 131419930

Mikel Arteta reveals why Gabriel took crucial penalty in Champions League final
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has revealed that Gabriel Magalhaes had asked to take the crucial penalty he missed in the Champions League final.Gabriel stepped up for the fifth spot-kick in the shootout needing to score to take Paris Saint-Germain to sudden death, but skied his effort over the crossbar. His miss meant that PSG secured back-to-back Champions League crowns, with Arsenal left to rue their missed opportunities having battled hard to take it to penalties. It was the Brazilian defender’s first penalty for Arsenal, and came with Arteta having removed a number of his regular penalty takers. The Arsenal manager made six changes as the game went to extra time, with all of Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka and Kai Havertz substituted and thus unable to participate in the shootout.“He wanted to take it," Arteta said of Gabriel. "Normally the penalty takers would be Bukayo [Saka], Martin [Odegaard] and Kai [Havertz]. But we knew if the game went to extra-time and penalties, different players would have to step forward."Eberechi Eze also missed the target with his penalty, with Viktor Gyokeres, Declan Rice and Gabriel Martinelli registering in the shootout.Rice gave his backing to Eze and Gabriel after a “cruel” ending to the campaign.Declan Rice consoled Gabriel after his missed penalty (PA)"To miss a penalty in a Champions League final, obviously it's not nice,” the midfielder said to TNT Sports."But we love them and we're with them. It happens in football. They're not going to be the last players to miss penalties in finals."Everyone has missed a penalty and without those two this season we wouldn't have won the Premier League, that's for sure."Gabriel, I've run out of words for him as a person and as a player. Eze has scored some crucial goals for us this season."It happens. It's football and it's cruel. We take the positives and keep going."

Commanders officially have a kicking competition
It's official, folks. The Washington Commanders have a true kicking competition. The Commanders opened OTAs last week. On the first day of OTAs, reporters were allowed to watch practice, which meant a first look at Washington's many new players. One of those newcomers is rookie kicker Drew Stevens. In most NFL cities, an undrafted rookie kicker is not a big deal. But things are different in Washington. The Commanders have had a revolving door at kicker in recent years. Last season, the Commanders spent big money on a one-year deal for former Pro Bowl kicker Matt Gay. It didn't go well, and Gay was cut after missing six field goals in 10 games. Veteran Matthew Wright kicked in one game for Washington last season when Gay was out with an injury. However, when Washington moved on from Gay, it signed former San Francisco third-round pick Jake Moody off the Chicago Bears' practice squad. Only weeks earlier, Moody kicked a game-winning field goal to defeat the Commanders at Northwest Stadium on Monday Night Football. Moody did well in his audition for Washington, making 10 of 11 field goals, including a long of 56 yards in six games. He was re-signed to a one-year deal in March. After the 2026 NFL Draft, the Commanders chose to bring in some competition for Moody and signed Stevens, a four-time All-Big Ten kicker from the University of Iowa. This week during OTAs, each kicker had the same opportunity to shine. Stevens made the most of his opportunity, making each one, including a 53-yarder. New kicker Drew Stevens was a perfect 5/5 on kicks just now, including a 53-yarder— Zach Selby (@ZachSelbyWC) May 27, 2026Moody didn't hurt his chances either, although he missed one. Kicking battle will be fun to watch. Stevens just absolutely ripped all 6 FG attempts. Moody went 5 of 6 and made his longest (about 53ish). AP & DQ watched intently. Stevens’ power is obvious; if the accuracy can match he’s a weapon.— JP Finlay (@JPFinlayNBCS) May 27, 2026This is what you want. The competition should bring out the best in each kicker; otherwise, your decision would be easy. Don't be surprised if this battle isn't decided until the final preseason game. Drew Stevens absolutely has a chance to win the job as an undrafted rookie. This article originally appeared on Commanders Wire: Washington Commanders: There's officially a kicking competition

Iran war forces farmers to seek fertilizer alternatives from cow dung to compost
Farah Jammeh throws organic compost on the fields at the cooperative in Rufisque, Senegal, Tuesday, May 12, 2026. (AP Photo/Caitlin Kelly)2026-05-31T05:15:18Z DAKAR, Senegal (AP) — When Senegalese farmer Abou Sow first watched U.S. missiles strike Iran on social media, he had a sinking feeling it would soon affect agriculture in the West African nation. Since the war began on Feb. 28, fertilizer prices have risen by 40%.Sow was better prepared than most. Eight years ago, he gave up chemical fertilizers for organic compost and other natural sources. He now rallies farmers in Senegal to buy manure from local herders and gives advice on how to make a rich compost, picking out wriggling worms – a healthy sign.“We can’t afford to wait for a ceasefire,” Sow said. “It’s risky to depend on chemical fertilizers.” Iran’s grip on the Strait of Hormuz has affected the supply of natural gas, essential for making chemical fertilizer, as well as global shipping. The Gulf region produces 30% of globally traded chemical fertilizer, according to the International Food Policy Research Institute, and global prices have increased by 50%, according to the World Bank’s fertilizer price index. “The clock is ticking very hard,” said Maximo Torero, chief economist at the U.N.’s Food and Agriculture Organization, as concerns grow about food security. Experts say a shift away from chemical fertilizer could have wider benefits, as its production and usage create significant greenhouse gas emissions, the main driver of climate change.Natural fertilizers, by contrast, can sequester carbon in the soil and create fewer problems like runoff that can pollute waterways.“It’s good for the planet because you’re weaning food production off fossil fuels,” said Susan Chomba, member of the International Panel of Experts on Sustainable Food Systems, a think tank. Read More In Senegal, some are grateful for sheep manureSenegal annually imports 125,000 tons of fertilizer. The minister of agriculture, Mabouba Diagne, has said the state sourced enough chemical fertilizer for the current season, but farmers said it is increasingly difficult to find.Farmer Aliou Fall blamed U.S. President Donald Trump for the soaring fertilizer costs. “He brings war to the world and he doesn’t even think about it. Now farmers are suffering,” Fall said.Annually, Sow applies six tons of compost instead. He said he is fortunate to be near a town where manure is plentiful because residents rear sheep for religious holidays. In rural areas and remote fields, however, it is challenging to source and transport large quantities of manure, and Sow fears that some people will abandon their fields in this difficult time. One alternative is the industry in biofertilizers, products containing bacteria and other microorganisms to help plants absorb nitrogen, a crucial nutrient for growth, from the air and soil. A growing number of companies in Africa make industrial quantities of compost with municipal waste, decomposing food waste into fertilizer.Senegal’s government announced in April it would subsidize and distribute 30,000 tons of organic fertilizer products to help farmers. Sow said that’s not enough.Governments around the world spend $700 billion annually on agricultural subsidies according to the Organization of Economic Co-operation and Development, with a large share spent on providing chemical fertilizer. Chomba said that makes alternatives more expensive and less competitive.“You’re incentivizing the wrong sort of products,” she said. In Brazil, the biofertilizers sector is growingBrazil is a leading exporter of soybeans, coffee, sugarcane, beef and poultry. But the nation imports over 80% of its fertilizer, said Joana Colussi, assistant professor of agricultural economics at Purdue University. The price of fertilizer has increased by 50% since the Iran war began, according to Luis Barbieri, founder of the Folio Institute, a Brazilian organization that connects farmers, scientists and researchers.“Whenever we have a war, farmers’ use of biofertilizers is turbocharged,” Barbieri said.Despite the widespread adoption of chemical fertilizers in Brazil in the 1970s, they are less effective in the tropical climate because high rainfall and high temperatures cause runoff. The biofertilizer sector grew 15% in Brazil from 2023 to 2024, according to the state-run Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation, Embrapa. And patent laws mean that farmers can make their own biofertilizers at much lower cost.In Mexico, however, very little progress has been made due to government subsidies promoting chemical fertilizer use and a lack of funding for alternatives, said Gerardo Noriega, a research professor at the Autonomous University of Chapingo and one of the country’s leading advocates for organic fertilizers. But he suggested the current crisis “may force (farmers) to adopt organic fertilizers more quickly than they had imagined.” In India, the prime minister encourages natural farmingIn India’s southern Indian state of Telangana, Manohara Chari has been making jivamrita, a potent mix of cow dung, urine, flour, soil and sugar to replace the chemical fertilizer he used to apply.“We do not depend on companies,” said Chari, one of 1.7 million farmers in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh states who have shifted to natural farming, which embraces natural fertilizers, integrates livestock waste and plants a diversity of crops to improve soil health.Farmers and experts say the Iran war and chemical fertilizer shortage make the approach more attractive. On May 10, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a “national mission” to adopt natural farming and cut fertilizer use by 50%.India imports 60% of its fertilizer from the Gulf. The government has rushed to source supplies and subsidized it to keep prices low, at significant expense to the state.“There’s certainly been more interest this year in natural farming, especially after the Middle East conflict began,” said G.V. Ramanjaneyulu, agricultural scientist at the Center for Sustainable Agriculture. Some farmers have dedicated part of their land to assess the approach. The switch requires additional labor, and farmers face a transition period. Chari said the government could help instead of subsidizing chemical fertilizers: “If even a fraction of that support is given to natural farmers, more people will shift towards it.”___Arasu reported from Bengaluru, India, and Sanchez from Mexico. Here are the top candidates for California governor in Tuesday’s primary
From left, Katie Porter, Chad Bianco, Antonio Villaraigosa, Xavier Becerra, Matt Mahan, Steve Hilton and Tom Steyer wait during a break at a California gubernatorial debate hosted by CBS Bay Area and the San Francisco Examiner in San Francisco, Thursday, May 14, 2026. (AP Photo/Godofredo A. Vásquez, Pool)2026-05-31T04:02:16Z One of the country’s messiest and most consequential governor’s races is hurtling toward an inflection point on Tuesday in California. Voters are looking for a replacement for Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom, and their decision will help determine the future of a state government that is a testing ground for progressive ideas and a punching bag for Republican President Donald Trump. California is not only the nation’s most populous state, it has one of the world’s largest economies and is home to Hollywood tastemakers, Silicon Valley disrupters and Central Valley farmers. The race was upended in April when Rep. Eric Swalwell, who had been consolidating support among establishment Democrats, was accused of sexual assault and dropped out. California eliminated partisan primaries in 2010 in favor of a “ jungle primary.” All voters will get the full list of candidates, and the top two finishers will advance to the general election regardless of party. Two polls conducted in mid-to-late May suggested that Democrat Xavier Becerra and Republican Steve Hilton each have the support of about 2 in 10 likely voters. In one of the polls, Democrat Tom Steyer landed closer to Becerra and Hilton, with Republican Chad Bianco and Democrat Katie Porter trailing further behind, but similar shares of voters were supporting Steyer, Bianco and Porter in the other poll. None of the other candidates were polling in double digits in either poll.Among the 61 names on the ballot, money and attention have accumulated around a handful of candidates with track records in politics. Here’s a look at those top contenders. Xavier Becerra, DemocratBecerra has a 35-year history in California and national politics. He was a member of Democratic leadership in the U.S. House when then-Gov. Jerry Brown picked him to be California attorney general after Kamala Harris was elected to the U.S. Senate. He used that perch to aggressively fight Trump and his agenda in court during the president’s first term.He later served in President Joe Biden’s cabinet as secretary of Health and Human Services. That experience is at the core of his pitch to voters as a steady hand to guide California and stand up to Trump. It has also invited scrutiny. Some Biden administration alumni have disparaged his record as health secretary, and he has faced persistent questions since a former top aide was convicted of stealing his campaign funds. After Swalwell dropped out, Becerra consolidated support from many of California’s Democratic power players, including major labor unions, Planned Parenthood and the LGBTQ rights group Equality California. Read More Steve Hilton, RepublicanTrump’s endorsement gives Hilton a leg up with Republicans and perhaps the clearest path of any of the candidates into the general election. But it could be a liability in November in a state that voted overwhelmingly against the Republican president. Hilton largely avoided mentioning Trump unless prompted during a series of debates.Hilton is a conservative commentator and former Fox New host. Originally from England, he advised former British Prime Minister David Cameron. In a nod to the dominance of Democrats in California, he is urging voters to elect a Republican as a check on the majority in Sacramento. In contrast with Bianco’s focus on cultural issues, Hilton’s message is tied more closely with the traditional Republican focus on lower taxes and smaller government. He has pledged to make people’s first $100,000 of income tax free and to dramatically lower gas prices. Tom Steyer, DemocratThe billionaire founder of a San Francisco-based hedge fund, Steyer — or his face, at least — is everywhere ahead of the primary. His record-breaking spending, mostly from his personal fortune, has made his advertising inescapable. That has helped him become one of the race’s frontrunners.Steyer, who has never held elected office, first made a name for himself as a donor to Democratic politicians and groups committed to fighting climate change. He bankrolled a campaign calling for Trump’s impeachment during his first term, and he later financed his own campaign for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination but dropped out after a disappointing showing in early-state primaries and caucuses. Steyer is running as a progressive populist, railing against the political power wielded by special interests and corporations. His message has endeared him to unlikely allies for a billionaire financier, including the Bernie Sanders-aligned group Our Revolution. Matt Mahan, DemocratAs mayor of San Jose, Mahan is a moderate Democrat rooted in the pro-innovation ethos of Silicon Valley. His business-friendly pitch and his own background as an entrepreneur have made him a favorite with some in the tech world. Mahan says California should get “back to basics,” emphasizing technocratic problem solving over factional skirmishes. He entered the race late as an outsider to Sacramento leadership, building a statewide profile mainly by criticizing Newsom and the Legislature’s response to homelessness and crime. His backing from tech executives — and their millions of dollars — has been controversial in some corners of the party, particularly among labor unions and populists worried Silicon Valley elites wield too much power. Still, he has struggled to consolidate support on the pro-business left, and even some of his benefactors are hedging their bets. Google co-founder Sergey Brin and Palantir co-founder Joe Lonsdale also gave to Republican Steve Hilton. Katie Porter, DemocratOnce a college professor, Porter made a name for herself with a whiteboard and simple policy messages during three terms representing Orange County in Congress. Her verbal sparring with business executives testifying on Capitol Hill went viral.Porter is leaning on her populist, anti-corporate background, arguing that she can fight on behalf of normal Californians against powerful interests. Before running for office, she was California’s independent monitor of banks in the national mortgage settlement following the 2008 financial crisis. Her grasp of policy has helped her amass support from newspaper editorial boards. But she has battled an image as a mercurial leader. Leaked videos showed her berating an aide who could be seen behind her in a Zoom video and threatening to walk out of a television interview. She has apologized and pledged to treat people more respectfully.Porter ran for Senate in 2024, but she failed to make it through the primary. Antonio Villaraigosa, DemocratThe former mayor of Los Angeles and speaker of the state Assembly has struggled to gain traction after more than a decade out of public office.A one-time union organizer, Villaraigosa was the first Latino mayor of Los Angeles in more than a century, a role he filled from 2005 to 2013. Villaraigosa is pitching his experience in LA and the state Capitol, running as a pragmatic, centrist problem solver in an implicit contrast with his Democratic rivals emphasizing their commitment to a progressive ideology.Villaraigosa’s roots are in the Southern California political ecosystem, which would be a contrast after four terms of Brown and Newsom, both governors from the San Francisco Bay Area.He ran for governor in 2018 but finished third in the primary.Chad Bianco, RepublicanBianco is the sheriff of Riverside County and is emphasizing his three-decade career in law enforcement, pledging to tackle crime and homelessness.A staunch Trump supporter, Bianco stoked national notoriety when his office seized 1,000 boxes of election material including more than a half million ballots from a 2025 special election on redistricting. He says it is part of a legitimate criminal investigation, but critics see it as a nod to discredited conspiracy theories that have motivated Trump’s base. The state Supreme Court in April ordered him to halt the probe. The seizure put him at odds with California’s Democratic attorney general and raised his profile among Republicans. JONATHAN J. Concerns mount that Belarus could be a launchpad for a new Russian offensive in Ukraine
Russian President Vladimir Putin, left, and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, attend a ceremony to lay flowers at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier by the Kremlin wall inMoscow, Saturday, May 9, 2026, during celebrations of the 81st anniversary of the Soviet Union's victory over Nazi Germany during World War II. (Pelagiya Tikhonova, Sputnik, Kremlin Pool Photo via AP)2026-05-31T04:03:11Z Over four years ago, Belarus’ authoritarian President Alexander Lukashenko allowed longtime ally Russia to use his territory to invade Ukraine. Now officials in Kyiv are warning that Lukashenko could again allow his land to serve as a launchpad for more attacks by the Kremlin’s forces. While Belarus has not contributed troops to battle, Lukashenko has backed President Vladimir Putin’s war effort by hosting Russia’s nuclear weapons and military infrastructure, as well as producing components for Moscow’s military industries. Earlier this month, the countries held joint drills of nuclear forces involving Russian weapons deployed in Belarus.Lukashenko, in power for over three decades, has ruled the nation of 9.5 million with an iron fist, relentlessly cracking down on dissent and relying on its close ties with Russia, as well as subsidies from the Kremlin’s coffers, to counteract repeated Western sanctions.Military cooperation between Moscow and Minsk is increasingly worrying Ukraine’s allies. Belarus’ role in UkraineWhen Putin began the full-scale invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022, Russian troops that gathered in Belarus under the guise of drills dashed toward Kyiv, only about 90 kilometers (56 miles) south of the border.Putin’s hope of capturing Kyiv quickly was shattered by staunch Ukrainian resistance, and convoys of Russian tanks stretching along narrow roads became easy prey.A little over a month after the invasion, Russian troops that suffered heavy losses and struggled to maintain their supply lines pulled back from Kyiv and other areas they captured in northeastern Ukraine in what the Kremlin cast as a “goodwill gesture.” When Moscow tried to negotiate a quick end to the conflict weeks after its start, Belarus hosted the first talks between Russian and Ukrainian delegations. The talks moved to Istanbul but failed to produce a deal. Read More As the conflict became a war of attrition, Belarus has played a key role in supporting Moscow’s war effort. Belarusian plants have produced important components, including microchips and other electronics, optical guidance systems, artillery munitions and heavy trucks that carry Russian ballistic missiles. Ukraine’s presidential envoy on sanctions policy, Vladyslav Vlasiuk, said fragments of an Oreshnik ballistic missile that Russia fired at Ukraine on May 24 contained microchips from Belarus. He urged Western allies to tighten sanctions enforcement against Belarus.Belarus also provided training grounds for Moscow’s troops, hosted joint drills and offered its hospitals to treat wounded Russian soldiers.BELPOL, a group of former military and law enforcement officers who oppose Lukashenko, said the Belarusian industries have effectively been integrated into the Kremlin’s war machine. It says that over 500 Belarusian industrial plants are involved in manufacturing weapons and ammunition, repairing military equipment and providing logistics.“Lukashenko’s regime is quite seriously involved in the war,” BELPOL head Uladzimir Zhyhar told The Associated Press. “Lukashenko is helping Russia in every way he can.” In the Gomel region that borders Ukraine, construction has begun of a big firing range and barracks for large numbers of troops, Zhyhar said. Ukraine has been forced to maintain many forces at the border with Belarus, he added, keeping them from fighting Russian troops along the more than 1,000-kilometer (600-mile) front line.Under Russia’s nuclear umbrellaBelarus, which also borders NATO members Latvia, Lithuania and Poland, has hosted some of Russia’s tactical nuclear weapons. In December, Russia announced that its latest intermediate range nuclear-capable Oreshnik missile system entered service in Belarus.Russia has used a conventionally armed version of the Oreshnik to strike facilities in Ukraine three times — in November 2024 and then again in January and earlier this month. In 2024, the Kremlin revised its nuclear doctrine, placing Belarus under the Russian nuclear umbrella. Putin has said that Moscow will retain control of its nuclear weapons deployed in Belarus but would allow its ally to select the targets in case of conflict. Earlier this month, Russia and Belarus held massive drills that included the delivery of nuclear warheads to missile units and launch preparations. As part of the exercise, a Belarusian missile crew test-fired a nuclear-capable Iskander missile from a range in southern Russia.“Belarus lacks military sovereignty, and as soon as Moscow sees it as necessary for its strategy, Moscow will naturally use Belarus as a launchpad for a new invasion of Ukraine or some kind of armed conflict with NATO countries,” Zhyhar said, noting that Belarus offers a “very convenient springboard” for such an invasion. Zelenskyy warns of an attack from BelarusLast week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said his intelligence services had learned Moscow recently stepped-up efforts to “draw Belarus much deeper into the war and launch additional aggressive operations precisely from Belarusian territory.” He said the target could be along the Chernihiv-Kyiv area or against a NATO country bordering Belarus.Zelenskyy said he ordered the military and security agencies to prepare a response and strengthen northern defenses.Lukashenko has denied any aggressive plans, declaring Belarus will not enter the conflict unless attacked.Sergei Shoigu, Russia’s former defense minister and now secretary of its Security Council, also rejected Zelenskyy’s claim, describing it as a scare tactic to attract more Western aid for Kyiv. But in a sign of growing Western concern, French President Emmanuel Macron spoke to Lukashenko on May 24 to underscore the risks for Belarus of being dragged into the war, their first call since the invasion began. Lukashenko said that next week he will host a French envoy for talks on European security and prospects of easing EU sanctions.Andrii Demchenko, a spokesman for Ukraine’s Border Guard Service, said last week that while intelligence data indicate that Russia has increasingly pressured Belarus to directly enter the war, Ukrainian forces haven’t yet spotted any buildup of troops and weapons near the border.Belarus’ opposition leader-in-exile, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, visited Kyiv last week and emphasized that “Belarus must never again become a springboard for aggression.”“Russian tanks must never again march through Belarus to Chernihiv, Zhitomir, Rivne, or Kyiv,” Tsikhanouskaya told AP. “Ukraine is fighting for itself and for all the peoples who have lived in the shadow of empire for too long. It is fighting for the right to live in peace. And the fate of my country, Belarus, also depends on Ukraine’s success.”According to official data, Belarus’ armed forces have 48,600 troops, a tiny force compared with Russia’s 1.5 million. In case of war, Belarus is prepared to mobilize 290,000, but they would need weapons and training to become combat-ready.“The Belarusian army is unfit for offensive action,” said Alexander Alesin, a Minsk-based military analyst. “An attack from Belarus would require ... mobilizing up to 500,000 troops.”That would mean taking all the men from the national economy and then finding arms for them, he said, adding: “I consider this option unlikely.”Ukraine has built heavy fortifications on the border with Belarus and planted mines that would easily stymie any attempted incursion, he said.“Even with a small force, the Ukrainians can easily defend themselves and inflict heavy losses on the Belarusian army,” Alesin said. “From a military perspective, it’s impossible to launch an attack from Belarusian territory without suffering heavy losses.”Lukashenko is comfortable with Belarus’ position as a key supplier of military equipment and would strongly oppose direct involvement in the war, he added.“The last thing Lukashenko wants is to fight, and he’ll cling to his current position at any cost, so he can avoid fighting while profiting handsomely from the war,” Alesin said. Heavy rains threaten to delay search for 2 people missing in Laos cave
In this image released by Metta Tham Rescue Kalasin, rescuers try to reach people who have been trapped in a cave in Xaisomboun province, Laos, Tuesday, May 26, 2026. (Metta Tham Rescue Kalasin via AP)2026-05-31T06:39:48Z BANGKOK (AP) — Heavy rains threatened to delay the search for two people missing in a flooded cave in Laos on Sunday, after the rescue of five other people who were trapped underground for over a week.Finnish diver Mikko Paasi, one of the first international rescuers to arrive at the site, told The Associated Press that rains had filled the cave up to the second chamber, preventing divers from entering the cave until pumps can lower the water level. The seven villagers reportedly entered the cave last week to look for valuable minerals before being trapped by a flash flood that blocked their way out. One other villager escaped and alerted the authorities.Rescue teams from Laos and neighboring Thailand have been working together in the past week at the site in a rugged area in the central province of Xaisomboun, about 120 kilometers (75 miles) north of the capital, Vientiane. They were joined by divers from countries including Finland, Malaysia, Japan, Indonesia, France and Australia. Several of the rescuers previously took part in the complicated 2018 cave rescue in northern Thailand that saved 12 schoolboys and their soccer coach from a flooded cave. The rescued men are being treated at a local hospital and are doing well, Malaysian diver Lee Kian Lie, who’s taking part in the operation, told the AP on Sunday.“We interviewed them about how the deeper part of the cave looks like. We will continue to search based on the information we have, and perhaps we will be able to get to the other two,” he said. Read More According to rescuers, they have navigated more than 200 meters into the cave and discovered five chambers in the system. The five people rescued so far were found in the fifth chamber.Paasi told the AP that the survivors said there’s a narrow crack in the fifth chamber that could be a passage leading to a deeper part of the cave system. “This was the only place that we haven’t checked in the mine, where the two lost miners could still be,” he said during a video interview.“Now there’s a theory that, through that small crack, it still continues, and there’s a sixth chamber, which gives us hope now that, if we could penetrate that small restriction, we might be able to reach the sixth chamber and then see what is there.”The five people who have been rescued were first found Wednesday. They were identified by their first names as Khamla, Mued, Ee, Ing and Laen. The first man was safely evacuated on Friday, guided through a narrow flooded passage by an expert diver. The remaining four left the cave on Saturday after the water receded enough for them to walk out on their own, rescuers said.Videos posted online Saturday by rescuers at the site showed emotional moments as the men emerged one by one from the cave. Some collapsed on the ground at the cave’s entrance, and were hugged by a group of workers who cried in joy. Later moments showed them lying on a stretcher, wrapped in foil blankets and fitted with an oxygen mask before being transported out of the site.

American allies warn division weakens deterrence in calls for global unity to meet new threats
Japan's Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi delivers a speech during the Shangri-La Dialogue, Asia's annual defense and security forum, in Singapore, Sunday, May 31, 2026. (AP Photo/Achmad Ibrahim)2026-05-31T04:34:19Z SINGAPORE (AP) — American allies stressed the need for unity at a top defense conference Sunday, saying that as threats increasingly transcend regions, cooperation is more important than ever, even as Washington has become more critical of its traditional friends. U.S. President Donald Trump has been extremely harsh about NATO, and the comments at the Shangri-La conference came the day after U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth again chided Western European allies at the forum for not devoting enough resources to defense. Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi praised Hegseth for his commitment to the Indo-Pacific, but at the same time stressed the continued need for strong coalitions globally. “Division weakens deterrence, unity strengthens deterrence,” he told the conference, hosted by the International Institute for Strategic Studies. “If gaps emerge among the United States, Europe, and allies and like-minded countries, forces which take it as an opportunity will surely come in,” he said. “We must prevent such a situation. We must keep our cooperation going on. Now is the time to make our cooperation even stronger.” As China has been rapidly expanding and modernizing its military, Japan has been reshaping its own defense policy. Last month, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s Cabinet scrapped a ban on lethal weapons exports, a major change in its postwar pacifist policy. Read More China criticized the change, with Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun saying China would “resolutely resist Japan’s reckless moves toward a new type of militarism.”Koizumi scoffed at that accusation as ironic, coming from China.“Think about it, there is a country that has a huge arsenal of nuclear weapons and strategic bombers,” he said, speaking in English. “Japan has neither of such weapons, and yet Japan is labeled new militarism. Isn’t it strange?” He said that transparency comes from “discussion and dialogue” and lamented that China had not sent its defense minister to the conference. In his speech Saturday, Hegseth applauded many Asian partners for their efforts to step-up defense spending, while reiterating criticism of European allies, who he suggested got “distracted by empty globalist rhetoric about the rules-based international order, while European capitals threw open their borders and hollowed out their militaries.”“You can have all the rules you want and rules are great,” Hegseth said. “But if you can’t back them up with hard power, the rules are not worth the paper they are written on.”Many NATO countries failed for years to meet alliance defense spending commitments, but since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, many dramatically increased military expenditures and plan more in the future.Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the conference Sunday, Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles, said he agreed with Hegseth’s point that “the rules based order needs to be underpinned by power,” but at the same time said strong rules were “more important today than they have ever been.” “We are all committed to a rules based system, because that is actually what gives middle powers like Australia or smaller countries agency,” he said. He also said alliances remain critical to the region’s defense. “This is a collective challenge and it demands a collective response, which is actually what the rules based order is all about,” he said. Netherlands Defense Minister Dilan Yesilgöz-Zegerius said the current conflicts have global implications and demand a shared response. “A war in Europe involves drones from Iran, soldiers and ammunition from North Korea and various types of support from China,” she said. “The lesson is clear: regional tensions are no longer regional. Our security is interconnected.”She said that if middle powers do not work together, they risk becoming spectators or the “subject of conversations,” but with coalitions they can help preserve stability. “The fact that international rules are being violated does not mean we should abandon them,” she said. “On the contrary, it means we must defend them more constantly and more courageously. International law may be imperfect, but history teaches us that the alternative is far worse.” DAVID RISING Rising covers regional Asia-Pacific stories for The Associated Press. Roki Sasaki's breakout night overshadowed by late Phillies rally
Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Roki Sasaki (11) throws against the Philadelphia Phillies during the first inning at Dodger Stadium. LOS ANGELES — For seven innings Saturday night at Dodger Stadium, the story belonged to Roki Sasaki. The result ultimately belonged to the Phillies. What should have been remembered as Sasaki's most complete performance in a Dodgers uniform instead became another painful reminder that no lead is safe in baseball. The Phillies erased a two-run deficit in the eighth inning, tagging Tanner Scott for three runs before handing the Dodgers a frustrating 4-3 loss and snapping their six-game winning streak. The final score will show a blown lead. It will show Edmundo Sosa's go-ahead two-run homer. It will show Scott's first earned runs allowed since April 24.Philadelphia Phillies second baseman Edmundo Sosa (33) is greeted by Philadelphia Phillies third baseman Alec Bohm (right) after hitting a two-run home run during the eighth inning against the Los Ang... Kiyoshi Mio-Imagn ImagesPhiladelphia Phillies second baseman Edmundo Sosa (33) is greeted by Philadelphia Phillies third baseman Alec Bohm (right) after hitting a two-run home run during the eighth inning against the Los Ang... Kiyoshi Mio-Imagn ImagesBut it should not overshadow what happened before all of that. Saturday felt like a breakthrough for Sasaki.Facing one of the National League's most dangerous lineups in a postseason-like atmosphere against the Phillies, the 24-year-old right-hander looked every bit like the ace the Dodgers envisioned when they signed him.His final line was excellent: 5⅓ innings, three hits, one earned run, one walk and seven strikeouts on 84 pitches. The numbers were impressive. The stuff was even better.Sasaki's fastball averaged 98 mph, a slight jump from his season average of 96 mph. He reached 100 mph for the first time this season and, perhaps most importantly, maintained that velocity throughout the night. For much of the season, Sasaki's electric arm had been accompanied by inconsistent command. When he tried to reach back for extra velocity, the ball often sailed out of the strike zone. Not Saturday. His fastball had life. His splitter was devastating. His command was sharp."I've been making adjustments the last couple of days," Sasaki said. "It feels like my velo ticked up a little bit but I didn't even imagine it to be this much."The only blemish came in the second inning when Alec Bohm launched a solo homer. After that, Sasaki settled in and dominated. He retired 13 consecutive hitters at one point and carried a one-hitter into the sixth inning. When Kyle Schwarber and Trea Turner opened the sixth with back-to-back singles, Dave Roberts made the difficult but understandable decision to go to his bullpen. Sasaki left to a standing ovation after producing his finest outing as a Dodger."My fastball was really good," Sasaki said. "Velo was there, and I was able to execute the catchers' calls. I was doing it at my own pace."That phrase, at my own pace, may be the most encouraging development of all.Early in the season, Sasaki often appeared caught between trying to overpower hitters and simply trying to survive innings. Saturday, there was none of that uncertainty.Roberts has noticed the change."The month of May has been a very good month for him," Roberts said. "It seems like every outing he continues to improve, and tonight the velocity was where we were hoping it would be."Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Roki Sasaki (11) throws during the third inning against the Philadelphia Phillies at Dodger Stadium. Kiyoshi Mio-Imagn ImagesLos Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Roki Sasaki (11) throws during the third inning against the Philadelphia Phillies at Dodger Stadium. Then came perhaps the strongest endorsement yet from Roberts."He doesn't look unsure of himself anymore. It's real confidence." Roberts said. That confidence has been reflected in the results.Over his last three starts, Sasaki has allowed just four earned runs while striking out 19 hitters. More importantly, he has looked increasingly comfortable navigating major-league lineups. The Dodgers have spent much of this season preaching patience with their prized rookie. Saturday showed exactly why.Unfortunately for the Dodgers, baseball games are nine innings long. The Dodgers pieced together enough offense to support Sasaki. Alex Call delivered an RBI single in the second inning and later scored the go-ahead run in the fourth after doubling. Santiago Espinal added a sacrifice fly, while Mookie Betts continued his recent resurgence with three hits, including an RBI single in the seventh that extended the lead to 3-1.The bullpen carried the torch from there.Alex Vesia escaped another inherited-runner jam and continued one of the most quietly dominant relief seasons in baseball. Vesia has inherited 14 runners this season and allowed only one to score.Kyle Hurt followed with a perfect seventh inning on his 28th birthday.Everything lined up for another Dodgers victory. Then Scott took the mound in the eighth. The left-hander entered carrying a 12⅓-inning scoreless streak and had not allowed an earned run in more than a month. His dominance had become one of the stabilizing forces in the Dodgers bullpen. For one inning, it disappeared.Justin Crawford opened the frame with a single. Bryce Harper followed later with an RBI hit to cut the lead to one. Then Sosa jumped on a two-strike pitch and launched it into the left-center-field seats.Just like that, the Dodgers were behind."Well, I gave up three tonight," Scott said. "I left a pitch, I was trying to go up and I left it more on the plate and it wasn't out of the strike zone with two strikes and he got me."Simple explanation. Costly result. The Phillies capitalized on their opportunity. The Dodgers never answered.By night's end, what should have been remembered as Sasaki's arrival became another lesson in how quickly momentum can disappear.Still, there was plenty for the Dodgers to take from the loss. The Phillies may have won the game. Sasaki may have won something bigger. For the first time in his young major-league career, he looked like more than a pitcher with elite potential. He looked like a frontline starter.

'It had to be the Premier League and they've won that'
[Getty Images]Despite being close to the "greatness" winning the Champions League would have brought, Arsenal will celebrate achieving their "number-one target", according to BBC Radio 5 Live's chief football correspondent John Murray. He told the Football Daily podcast after the Gunners' defeat on penalties by Paris St-Germain in Saturday's Champions League final: "Obviously there will be disappointment for Arsenal supporters that they haven't been able to lift this trophy as well and make it an unforgettable season."It would have been greatness - that's how close they were. A penalty shootout away from this team being remembered forever."However, they have achieved the number-one target. After finishing runners-up three years running, it was loaded on Arsenal."With the money they spent last summer, that recruitment that they made, it had to be the Premier League. They've won that and that's what they'll celebrate in north London [at Sunday's parade]."French football journalist Julien Laurens added: "They will come back stronger but they're not far off - that's the most important."They were a penalty away. That's how close they are to winning the Champions League and they should not forget that."Hear more reaction on the Football Daily podcast on BBC Sounds

Moyes on Rooney's talent and how Everton job 'felt right'
[Getty Images]Everton boss David Moyes says a teenage Wayne Rooney was "the last of the street footballers" in the English game.During Moyes' first spell in charge of the Toffees, he gave the striker his professional debut at just 16 years old.Speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show about his first thoughts on the player, Moyes said: "He was a cheeky Scouser but also an unbelievable talent."We were saying: 'He can't be that good at that age.' I was actually getting a lot of criticism from the media because we had other good centre-forwards at the time. Kevin Campbell Tomasz Radzinski, quite a few others - Big Duncan [Ferguson] was still around and trying to get Wayne in the team wasn't easy, because they were senior players."A couple of times I had to play him off the left in the early days, but I say this to the young players: 'Often you don't get the big gig in your team where you play.'"The talent Wayne had was the bit which we found really difficult because he was also physically equipped to play in men's football, which was really, really strange for someone so young."But he was a brilliant talent. We used to talk about street footballers in this country. For me, Wayne was the last of the street footballers, or certainly the last of the ones I know of."Moyes also touched on how he felt when he first took the Goodison Park job back in 2002."I had a brilliant opportunity to manage Everton," he said. "At that time, I had been getting offered quite a few jobs to go to other Premier League clubs."I went to see Sir Alex [Ferguson] a few times about [other] jobs that had been offered and he said: 'No, I don't think you should take that job.'"I had the chance to become Manchester United assistant manager before that as well and it didn't pan out, so when Everton came along it just felt right at the time."Find this episode of The Wayne Rooney Show on YouTube, BBC iPlayer and BBC Sounds

Bulinews Player of the Season Awards: Gladbach's Player of the Season
Bulinews Player of the Season Awards: Gladbach's Player of the SeasonOverall, it proved to be an underwhelming and inconsistent 2025/26 campaign for Borussia Mönchengladbach, but things could have been far worse without Haris Tabakovic’s reliability in front of goal.Given the difficult task of stepping in after talismanic striker Tim Kleindienst suffered a long-term injury, the on-loan TSG Hoffenheim forward emerged as Gladbach’s biggest attacking threat by some distance, finishing the season with 13 goals in 32 Bundesliga appearancesThe 31-year-old rounded off the campaign in style by scoring in Gladbach’s emphatic 4-0 victory over TSG Hoffenheim, but suffered a metatarsal fracture in the process. The injury has cast doubt over Tabakovic’s participation for Bosnia & Herzegovina at the World Cup, but the striker has expressed hope of still playing a role and insists he intends to travel with the squad regardless, having contributed to their successful qualifying campaign.A permanent move to Gladbach looks off the table despite a strong loan spell, with the 31-year-old set to return to Hoffenheim after the World Cup ahead of a likely summer exit. His 2025/26 campaign has likely put several clubs on alert.STANDOUT PERFORMANCE:Tabakovic scored two braces over the course of the season, with the first coming in a crushing 4-0 away win over St. Pauli back in November. The Bosnian forward opened the scoring after Gladbach capitalised on a mistake from St. Pauli goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj, before later doubling Die Fohlen’s advantage with a typical striker’s finish.Tabakovic narrowly missed out on a hat-trick, but set up Shuto Machino for the third goal, before Oscar Fraulo pounced just ahead of him to make it 4-0.HONOURABLE MENTIONS:While Tabakovic received six of 10 votes, Moritz Nicolas finished as runner-up, being selected by three Bulinews writers for an impressive season in goal.Captain Rocco Reitz, who is now controversially set to join RB Leipzig, picked up the final vote.

Ethiopia heads to the polls for an election expected to be dominated again by Abiy’s ruling party
Supporters of Ethiopia's ruling party hold a large portrait of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed at a rally ahead of the national elections in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Tuesday, May 26, 2026. (AP Photo/Amanuel Sileshi)2026-05-31T04:01:38Z ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AP) — Ethiopia heads to the polls on Monday in an election that the ruling party is predicted to win by a landslide due to a fragmented and weak opposition.Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed ’s Prosperity Party currently holds more than 500 seats in the House of Representatives and is expected to win a majority in this election, securing him another five-year term. Some 50 million people, out of a population of 130 million Ethiopians, are expected to vote for members of the House of Representatives, but insecurity in the most populous regions, including Amhara and Oromia, is expected to affect turnout.Ethiopia’s electoral system allows voters to select their representatives, who then vote for a prime minister. Ethiopians will also vote for members of their local regional government councils. This year’s election themes include national reconciliation due to the fighting seen in regions such as Tigray, Oromia, and Amhara, and there is also a development theme as the government pledges to undertake major projects. Former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, who helped facilitate the Tigray peace talks, is leading 73 observers from the African Union. Arriving in Ethiopia on Saturday, Kenyatta emphasized the importance of Ethiopia’s elections for the continent, as the country hosts the African Union headquarters. “Ours is to call for peaceful situation as Ethiopians are known for,” he said. Read More Abiy’s administration has been accused of human rights violations against critics and journalists despite the promise of democracy and peace he made in 2020.During his tenure, Ethiopia has been through the Tigray war in the north of the country, where hundreds of thousands of people died as the federal security forces clashed with the regional forces. A peace deal was signed in November 2022.Abiy won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2019 for solving a long-standing conflict between Ethiopia and neighboring Eritrea, though the two countries are currently at loggerheads, with Addis Ababa accusing Asmara of supporting rebel groups to destabilize it. There are fears that the situation could escalate and drag the volatile Tigray region into a proxy war, even as relief agencies warn of a dire humanitarian situation on the ground. The Tigray People’s Liberation Front — the dominant political party in Ethiopia’s far northern region of Tigray — has been outlawed as the party maintains control of the regional government and threatens to cancel the 2022 peace agreement, which the federal government sees as an attempt to trigger another conflict. For the second time, the region will not take part in the national election, denying it a federal voice in Ethiopia’s 547-seat parliament and further pushing it to the margins amid escalating famine and conflict, combined with the alleged denial of resources by the central government.Tigray has been excluded from federal representation for the last six years. This election is likely to be fair due to the “technological advancements in the electoral process” and increased public awareness, according to Bayu Samuel, an Addis Ababa-based political analyst. Some opposition parties have, however, decried the ruling party’s unfair advantage. The electoral process is “far from genuine and democratic,” says Mistresilasie Tamerat, the youngest candidate and head of the opposition Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Party.“The system favors the ruling party, and we can’t even freely operate (or) meet with our constituents,” she said.Eyoel Solomon, a spokesperson for the main opposition Ezema party, said it is dedicated to ending ethnic-based politics.“We have seen citizens being attacked because of their identity. We have seen them being persecuted simply for living in areas deemed by others not to be ‘theirs’,” he said. With much of the campaigning taking place in Addis Ababa, there has been a heavy military presence in the metropolis in recent days. The vote has dominated local conversation across the city, even though campaigning has been unusually quiet, with fewer rallies and little door-to-door outreach. The electoral body has declared Monday a national holiday, with government offices closed to encourage citizens to vote.

Colombia’s presidential election pits outgoing leader’s ally against pro-Trump candidates
Sen. Ivan Cepeda, presidential candidate of the ruling Historic Pact coalition, speaks to supporters during a campaign rally in Bogota, Colombia, Friday, May 22, 2026. (AP Photo/Fernando Vergara)2026-05-31T04:00:32Z BOGOTÁ, Colombia (AP) — Colombians are casting ballots on Sunday in the first round of the South American nation’s presidential election, choosing between candidates with radically diverging visions for the future of peace in a country haunted by decades of armed conflict. The vote, seen as a referendum on outgoing President Gustavo Petro’s policies, comes 10 years after Colombia signed an historic peace pact with guerrillas of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC. That agreement offered hope to break the nation out of a vicious cycle of fighting between rebel groups and the government but violence has roared back since then, coming to a head in the lead-up to the presidential vote. Criminal groups have increasingly launched drone strikes, armed attacks have plagued the race and last June, 39-year-old politician and presidential hopeful Miguel Uribe Turbay was fatally shot at a political rally. In a country where the fight for peace has long been a part of the political ethos, the question of how to address the conflict is once again dividing the country. Three top candidates have starkly different approachesThere are 14 candidates on the ballot, but the election has basically turned into a three-horse race.Senator and peace-builder Ivan Cepeda — a Petro ally — has led the polls and promises to carry on with Petro’s “total peace” initiative to negotiate with the country’s remaining rebel groups and sign peace agreements with them in an effort to resolve the persistent crisis. While the peace plan has largely failed as criminals have taken advantage of ceasefires with the government, Cepeda and Petro have maintained strong support among many because of progressive policies pushed forward under Petro, such as boosting the minimum wage. Running against Cepeda are Abelardo de la Espriella and Paloma Valencia, who have vowed to come down on armed groups with a heavier hand. Read More De la Espriella — a bombastic lawyer known as “The Tiger” — has particularly gained traction among voters in recent weeks for pitching himself as an outsider keen on emulating the heavy-handed tactics used in El Salvador’s war on gangs, which sharply reduced gang violence but fueled accusations of human rights abuses. Valencia is considered the political protege of Colombia’s former president and strongman Álvaro Uribe, who governed from 2002 to 2010 with strong support from the United States and whose government beat back FARC rebels in an offensive that took a massive civilian toll. Both de la Espriella and Valencia have touted their affinity for U.S. President Donald Trump even as he has taken a more aggressive stance toward Latin America than any U.S. president in decades and has pressured nations like Colombia, Ecuador and Mexico to more forcefully crack down on criminal groups. If no candidate wins at least 50% of the vote — something extremely rare in Colombia — the two top vote-getters will face a runoff in June. Colombians also disagree on how best to tackle the violenceMaria Eugenia, a 57-year-old seamstress who was stitching a pair of jeans on Friday in downtown Bogotá, Colombia’s capital, said she welcomed an all-out offensive on an expanding slate of criminal groups, regardless of the human cost. While she approved of Petro’s pushes to improve the country’s medical infrastructure, she said she was voting for de la Espriella because violence in rural areas of the country has gotten out of hand.“Of course, whenever you come down with a heavy hand, there’s always going to be debate,” she said. “But some people are going to have to fall to clean up what needs to be cleaned.”Others, like 26-year-old Cristian Morales, who strolled outside her shop, shook his head. While Petro’s peace plan has failed on many fronts, he said, making changes to a plan seeking to break the country out of cycles of violence was far better than swinging to another extreme. He said he planned to vote for Cepeda, placing the candidate’s push to protect Colombia’s biodiversity and expand access to education over bold promises to unravel the country’s deeply entrenched conflict. That would be something Morales said he thinks is “impossible” to do in just four years of a president’s term. “The solution to this conflict isn’t aggressive confrontations. It will only end in more bloodshed,” he said. “It’s so difficult because it’s either dialogue or arms, and an internal conflict isn’t good for anyone.”___Follow AP’s coverage of Latin America and the Caribbean at https://apnews.com/hub/latin-america MEGAN JANETSKY Megan Janetsky covers migration, conflict, human rights and politics in Mexico and Central America for The AP based in Mexico City. NJ state police set up protest zone outside contested immigration detention center as ICE leaves

(AP Photo/Angelina Katsanis)2026-05-29T20:43:33Z NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey state police set up designated protest zones and vehicle checkpoints outside an immigration detention center in Newark on Friday, relieving federal immigration enforcement agents who have been clashing with protesters for days. Gov. Mikie Sherrill said she sent in state police to bring order outside Delaney Hall as the demonstrations have intensified, with violence and arrests increasing as night falls.“It has grown unsafe, and that’s completely unacceptable,” the Democratic governor said at a news conference announcing the new measures. “We need to take this opportunity to lower the temperature.”As police erected protest barriers, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents who had formed an line in front of protesters moved inside the building’s perimeter fence.New Jersey State Police Lt. Col. David Sierotowicz said ICE officers agreed to stand down with state police assuming responsibility. Demonstrators had mixed reactions. Some staged a sit-in and refused to move into one of the new protest areas police set up using metal barriers and concrete blocks. Rachel Cohen worried that demonstrators exercising their First Amendment rights were being silenced. “It is not helpful to quell protest for the sake of a false peace,” she said. “There is no peace while we are torturing our neighbors on government dime inside this facility.” Read More U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, on social media, called the measures a “win for law and order” and noted that Sherrill had resisted sending state police for days. The protests began a week earlier after immigrant advocates said detainees inside launched a hunger strike over poor living conditions at the 1,000-bed facility, which opened last May. Demonstrators have been attempting to block people and vehicles from entering and exiting, linking their arms in a human chain and using trash cans, umbrellas and other items as makeshift shields and barricades. ICE officers wearing helmets and tactical vests have used pepper spray and batons to try to disperse the protesters and clear the roadway for vehicles. At least six demonstrators were arrested for allegedly assaulting law enforcement officers Wednesday night, and more have been arrested on other nights, according to DHS. Acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche shared images online Friday of bloody wounds and bruises sustained by ICE officers.“These riots are clearly not ‘peaceful protests’ as you can see from the photos of these horrific wounds,” he said. “Assault a federal officer, you’ll be held accountable.”Another demonstrator, Lisa O’Dwyer, said she was fine with the designated protest areas. “I like to get my point across and stay safe at the same time,” the Westfield resident said.Eyesha Marable, pastor at Mt. Zion AME Church in Millburn, agreed even while acknowledging that there were “different schools of thought” among protesters.“There are people here who are angry. Their family members are inside. Their friends are inside. People have been taken off the streets, out of their communities,” she said. “We have to keep the peace,” Marable said. “The goal is to get our people free, to get them liberated, and we cannot do that if we’re fighting out here.”State Attorney General Jennifer Davenport said it was important to “de-escalate” the situation as “violence, either against protesters or by protesters, is unacceptable.”Sherril said she did not want to give ICE a “pretext” to expand operations in the state.“We all need to do everything we can to cool things down now,” she said. The governor and other Democratic officials tried to visit detainees on Monday but were denied entry. Democratic members of Congress from New York City, however, were able to tour Delaney Hall the day after that. They reported dire conditions, with detainees being fed small portions of often spoiled food and their varied medical needs going ignored.Families and supporters of detainees also say their loved ones have also been subjected to pepper spray and physical force in retaliation for their hunger strike and the protests outside. ___Marcelo reported from New York. Wembanyama, Spurs win the West, topple Thunder 111-103 in Game 7 to head to NBA Finals
The San Antonio Spurs celebrate after defeating the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference finals of the NBA basketball playoffs series Saturday, May 30, 2026, in Oklahoma City. (AP Photo/Nate Billings)2026-05-30T18:39:26Z OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs started the Western Conference finals with a win in Oklahoma City, then ended the series the same way.The champions are dethroned. Wembanyama and the Spurs are headed to the NBA Finals.Wembanyama scored 22 points, Julian Champagnie got 18 of his 20 off of 3-pointers and the Spurs beat the Oklahoma City Thunder 111-103 on Saturday night — bucking heavy odds to win a Game 7 on the road.“This feeling, I can’t explain it,” Wembanyama said. “It’s so powerful.”Stephon Castle scored 16 points and De’Aaron Fox had 15. Dylan Harper added 12 and Keldon Johnson and Devin Vassell each finished with 11 for the Spurs, who are headed to the NBA Finals for the first time since 2014.They will host the New York Knicks in Game 1 on Wednesday night.“Back in October, we knew we had a chance to be pretty good,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. Correction — the Spurs have a chance to be great. Championship-level great.A huge moment came midway through the fourth, when San Antonio’s Luke Kornet blocked Oklahoma City’s Isaiah Hartenstein at the rim — denying a fast-break score that would have gotten the Thunder within four. It felt like the last gasp for the Thunder. Kornet played six minutes, missed all three of his shot attempts and finished with only two points, but the block was an epic moment.Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led the Thunder with 35 points and nine assists, but for the eighth consecutive season the NBA will have a new champion. Cason Wallace scored 17 points, while Jared McCain and Alex Caruso had 12 apiece for the Thunder. Read More “You have to grow from every experience, including the tough ones,” Thunder coach Mark Daigneault said. “And it’s the NBA — there are tough ones. We can also be really disappointed. ... There’s nobody that we don’t think we can beat, respectfully.”After four straight games that were largely decided going into the fourth quarter — the Thunder led Game 3 by 11, the Spurs led Game 4 by 18, the Thunder led Game 5 by 10 and the Spurs led Game 6 by 26, those leads all holding up with relative ease — this one was different, worthy of a Game 7. Spurs 80, Thunder 77 was the score going into the fourth, a bit of a back-and-forth contest where the Spurs led by as many as 14 in the first half and then by as many as 11 in the third, only to see the Thunder come roaring back both times.“The players did what they’ve been doing all year and they met the biggest moment,” Johnson said. The Spurs pulled away in the fourth again, daring the Thunder to try to come back one more time. The champions — short-handed, with Jalen Williams sidelined with a bad hamstring — just didn’t have anything left.“Winning an NBA championship is very hard in itself to do one time,” Gilgeous-Alexander said. “So to do it all over again would just only make it harder.”San Antonio won eight of the 12 meetings against the Thunder this season — and in the end, the only matchup that really mattered.“We want four more,” Wembanyama said. “We’re not done.”___AP NBA: https://apnews.com/nba TIM REYNOLDS Reynolds is an Associated Press sports writer, based in South Florida. twitter mailto

Venice’s growing flamingo population finds refuge in recovering wetlands
A group of flamingos feed in the Venetian lagoon, in Venice, Italy, Monday, May 4, 2026. (AP Photo/Luca Bruno)2026-05-31T05:07:16Z VENICE, Italy (AP) — Perhaps nothing better illustrates the flamingo’s status as a newcomer to the Venetian Lagoon than the fact that the local dialect has no word for them. But the pale pink birds — called “fenicotteri” in Italian — are now flocking to Venice in record numbers, as ecological efforts to restore damaged wetlands could help expand their habitat and possibly induce them to nest in the lagoon.Flamingos — which most famously nest in Spain and France — started showing up in the vast Venetian Lagoon in the early 2000s, mostly in fishing valleys and mudflats in the lagoon’s furthest reaches, with only rare sightings in the canaled historic center of Venice that is most frequented by global tourists. Venice Lagoon becomes an unlikely flamingo havenEnvironmentalists say their arrival in Venice as the European flamingo’s range expands is a sign of the lagoon’s health and suitability as a feeding ground. Last year, the number of wintering flamingos in Venice peaked at a record of nearly 24,000. That is 8,000 more than the previous year, numbers “that position the Venetian Lagoon as one of the most important wintering spots in its entire habitat range,” said ornithologist Alessandro Sartori. So far there are no fresh signs after two nesting attempts, in 2008 and 2013, in northern lagoon fishing valleys suffered serious setbacks, including violent hail that killed dozens of birds. Read More More than 90% of the birds counted in last year’s census were in the northern lagoon, which contains a large area of natural salt marsh. The flamingos are also attracted by the traditional fishing valleys, semi-natural embanked wetlands that provide abundant food but can also bring them into conflict with human activity. Venice seeks to recover its lost marshA project to reconstruct salt marshes in the more isolated southern lagoon — past the historic center and the industrial port — raises prospects that flamingo numbers will increase there as well by offering a new habitat in an area of the lagoon where wetland erosion has been especially severe. It could also draw the birds away from competing human uses in the north. The Venetian Lagoon, covering an expanse of 550 square kilometers (more than 200 square miles), was originally nearly half salt marsh. Today the area of salt marsh — or “barene” in the Venetian dialect — is just about 7%, about half of it reconstructed, said Jane da Mosto, the executive director of We Are Here Venice, the local partner in the EU’s 23.6 million euro ($27.5 million), 5-year WaterLANDS project to restore wetlands across Europe. Share Share Facebook Copy Link copied Print Email X LinkedIn Bluesky Flipboard Pinterest Reddit Read More The damage is especially stark in the central and southern lagoon, due to the combination of natural erosion and the dredging of shipping channels to access the Marghera industrial port in the 1960s.“And since then, there’s been much more widespread erosion and loss of sediments from the lagoon to the point that Venice is now on a trajectory to becoming a marine bay,” said da Mosto. The wetlands reconstruction project “is specifically to show that it’s possible to address this trend and change the course of history.” Rebuilding the salt marshes increases the lagoon’s ability to capture carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas and driver of climate change, and mitigates the effects of rising sea levels. But da Mosto said much larger areas would need to be restored to produce meaningful climate benefits. The goal of the EU project is to make salt marsh reconstruction scalable.Flamingos can also benefit as biodiversity increases.Da Mosto’s team is researching ways to increase biodiversity on the reconstructed marshes, including planting species that can help reduce erosion and make the wetlands more resilient. On a recent day, a flock of some 30 were perched in the distance — scattering when a pair of squawking oystercatchers alerted them to visitors.Already, Sartori believes that the reconstruction has begun to draw more flamingos to the area. Over the last three years, he has seen their numbers in the southern lagoon grow from just a handful to as many as 300 to 400 in certain periods.“The hope is that they can find — as they have found in other parts of the Mediterranean — right here on these barene, places where they can nest,” Sartori said. Venice’s pink newcomers could draw a different kind of visitorThe flamingos’ presence in the lagoon underlines the importance of the Venetian ecosystem and offers a new way for visitors to interpret the canaled city and outer islands through their ecological — and not just historical and artistic — significance.Still, visitors to Venice who hope to casually spy flamingos will probably be disappointed, and AP reporters recently had to travel by boat for an hour to spot any. The flamingos inhabit shallow, difficult-to-access reaches of the lagoon where navigating safely requires close attention to tides and channels. Even at a distance, the birds are easily disturbed and quick to take flight. Sartori predicts flamingo spotting — already a possibility from the shores of the small lagoon islands of Murano and Burano but rare in the historic center — could become more common as their numbers continue to grow.“Obviously this should always be done with respect for the animals, keeping a safe distance and not interfering with their daily lives,” he said. France detains hundreds of rioters after Paris Saint-German wins Champions League
PARIS (AP) — French police detained over 400 people involved in violent clashes in Paris and other French cities that erupted Saturday night after Paris Saint-Germain won the Champions League title.Seven officers were injured as football fans set off fires and vandalized shops, Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said, describing the violence as “absolutely unacceptable.” One small group even tried to storm a Paris police station.Nuñez said rioting took place in about 15 cities in France, and that nearly 400 people were detained in all, with nearly 300 of them in Paris alone. But he said that planned celebrations for the team's win on Sunday afternoon at the Champ de Mars, near the Eiffel Tower, would go ahead as scheduled. The PSG team will then be hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron at the Elysee presidential palace. Fans began celebrating in Paris after the final whistle Saturday evening in Budapest, Hungary, where Paris Saint-Germain won by beating Arsenal on penalties in a dramatic final. Fans marched along the avenues near Paris' Arc de Triomphe monument, with some setting off flares and blaring car horns. Around 20,000 people gathered on the Champs-Elysees, where police worked to contain the crowd. The Paris police prefecture said smaller groups caused disturbances in various locations, with some vandalizing shops and setting fires. Cars were also set ablaze. Those who attempted to storm a police station in the posh 8th Arrondissement neighborhood were dispersed, police said. In May last year following PSG’s first title, 201 people were injured in the French capital and police made more than 500 arrests across France. ___AP soccer: https://apnews.com/hub/soccer

'A risk worth taking' or 'go all out for Luis Enrique'? Fans on Iraola approach
[BBC][Getty Images]We asked for your views on whether outgoing Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola would be the right choice for Liverpool to succeed the sacked Arne Slot or whether you would prefer someone else. The Reds have approached the 43-year-old Spaniard to discuss the role. Here are some of your comments:Carl: If he doesn't have us playing like crabs going side to side again for another season and understands that central midfielders don't play right-back then he'll be an improvement that's for sure. It would be a gamble but his style of football at Bournemouth is much closer to what we loved under Jurgen Klopp than anything Slot could bring. A risk worth taking.Mike: Very happy with the Iraola approach. His attitude and work-rate, and that of his teams, is a better fit for Liverpool and what we need to right the wrongs of this season.Mez: No-brainer. He's been the manager of the season.Mark: I have always enjoyed how Bournemouth played under Iraola and feel a similar excitement to when we announced Klopp. Thanks, Arne, we will never forget the 20th title, but a change is needed.Alex: Iraola would be a gamble. Do Liverpool have the squad for heavy metal football now? We're in a bit of a mess with last year's signings still to settle in and older players leaving. Luis Enrique would be my choice. He might be tempted to take on a new challenge after Paris St-Germain's Champions League victory.James: Just go all out for Luis Enrique! A big name is the only way to sort the dressing room that Slot lost.Ken: I want Liverpool to take a bit of time to get this appointment right. Sporting director Richard Hughes needs to redeem himself by doing everything he can to persuade Luis Enrique to swap Paris for Liverpool. If that fails, then Iraola would be an acceptable alternative given his body of work in the Premier League.David: I've got nothing against Iraola but this seems like a backwards step for Liverpool. I'd want a manager who has a proven track record of winning trophies, not one who delivers mid-table positions at the end of the season.Paul: Iraola would be a risk. Bournemouth, and Brighton and Brentford, just seem to be a brilliantly run clubs and that no matter who comes in they punch well above their weight. When supposedly top managers leave these clubs they don't do as well as is expected of them and this could also be the case for Iraola. I think we need to try and get a more experienced coach who will immediately command the respect of the dressing room.

Springboks star Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu to undergo scans on ‘pretty serious’ injury
South Africa fly half Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu is set to undergo scans on an ankle injury sustained in the Stormers’ win over Cardiff. The Cape Town club progressed to the semi-finals of the United Rugby Championship after a 44-21 success at DHL Stadium, but victory may have come at a cost.Feinberg-Mngomezulu was injured in the act of scoring a try and was later spotted on crutches, with head coach John Dobson suggesting the Springboks playmaker could face a long lay-off.“It looks pretty serious, to be honest,” said Dobson of Feinberg-Mngomezulu’s injury. “He’s obviously going for a scan. The doctors have given me some feedback, but it looks like a proper ankle injury.“He was cramping a bit before then and looked uncomfortable when he started running back. We haven’t confirmed anything yet, but it’s concerning.“It’s a big blow. But whenever we take a knock, this group tends to pull together and fight. We’ve lost probably the most in-form young player in world rugby the week before a semi-final, which is far from ideal. But the way Jurie Matthee is playing and the fight in this squad gives me confidence that we’ll find a way.”The 24-year-old has established himself as one of world rugby’s most exciting talents, and made the South Africa No 10 shirt his own during an excellent 2025.Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu is one of rugby's brightest talents (PA)Any possible absence would be a major blow to Rassie Erasmus ahead of a huge year of international action with the launch of the Nations Championship and inaugural Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series against New Zealand. The Springboks begin their Nations Championship campaign against England in Johannesburg on 4 July, and also face Wales and Scotland in the new competition. They face the All Blacks in four Tests later in the year.Back rower Kwagga Smith is another major injury doubt, with reports in Japan suggesting he has suffered a serious knee injury. The Stormers will visit Leinster in their semi-final next Saturday, while Glasgow Warriors will host the Bulls.

“Turn it into fuel to improve”: Arteta urges Arsenal to harness UCL pain after PSG heartbreak
“Turn it into fuel to improve”: Arteta urges Arsenal to harness UCL pain after PSG heartbreakMikel Arteta wants Arsenal to use the pain of their Champions League final defeat to Paris Saint-Germain as 'fuel to improve' next season.Arsenal endured a heartbreaking night in Budapest as the Gunners lost to PSG on penalties. Kai Havertz had fired the North London side ahead inside six minutes in a dream start, but PSG's pressure told as Ousmane Dembele's penalty levelled to force extra time and penalties. In the shootout, Eberechi Eze and Gabriel missed their spot-kicks for Arsenal, as Paris Saint-Germain won a second consecutive Champions League crown. The defeat was a disappointing end to a memorable campaign for Arsenal, who this season ended a 22-year wait for the Premier League title. The club's appearance in theChampions League final was their first since 2006, and only their second in club history, an achievement that Arteta feels should not be lost in the aftermath of defeat.Speaking toTNT Sports at full-time, Arteta expressed his pride at Arsenal's achievement and called on the squad to use the painful defeat as motivation to improve next season."First of all you have to go through that pain, digest it and turn it into fuel to improve and reach a different level."I want to congratulate PSG because in my opinion they are the best team in the world. What they are able to do with the ball, with individual actions, credit to their players."I'm so proud of them. That we have, under the circumstances that we know internally what we've been through."To manage this group of players, the way they carry this badge. We got to the big one and we missed on the biggest one."We haven't done it for 22 years [win the league] and it is only the second time in our history [we have reached the final]."We need to recognise the season that we had. Nobody is going to take the pain away from you."I think you have to go through the motions. If you are in pain, go through the pain. If you have done something wrong, you have to learn from it."

Arteta: “That easily can be a penalty” on Madueke
Arteta: “That easily can be a penalty” on MaduekeMikel Arteta said Noni Madueke’s late challenge “easily can be a penalty” after Arsenal lost the Champions League final to PSG in a shootout.Photo by David Ramos/Getty ImagesMikel Arteta said Arsenal were denied by fine margins after losing the Champions League final to Paris Saint-Germain on penalties, but made clear he felt Noni Madueke could easily have been awarded a late spot-kick.Arsenal were beaten at the Puskas Arena after a 1-1 draw over 120 minutes, with PSG holding their nerve in the shootout to retain the trophy. For Arteta, the immediate feeling was simple. Pain. His side had come within a few kicks of winning the biggest club competition in football, only for the decisive moments to fall the other way.“Pain – that’s it,” he said when asked what he was feeling. “When you are so close in the competition and today you are a few penalty kicks away from winning the biggest club football competition, that’s the way we should feel.”Arteta did not try to hide behind the penalty decisions, but he did point to them as part of the margins that shaped the final.Mosquera was penalised in Arsenal’s box, while the late challenge on Madueke was not given. Asked whether Arsenal should have had a penalty, Arteta was direct.Photo by Richard Heathcote/Getty Images“I watched all the penalties in the competition in the last 72 hours to understand what is a penalty and what is not, and that easily can be a penalty,” he said.Asked if the result would have been different had the penalty been awarded, he refused to dwell on hypotheticals.“If, if, if – it’s not what happened and that’s it. We need to do better, we will have to improve and find different margins to get the outcome that we want.“First of all, you have to go through that pain, digest it and turn it into fuel and improve to reach a different level. It will demand a different level with the quality around Europe. I want to congratulate PSG, Luis [Enrique] in particular, because in my opinion they’re the best team in the world.“What they are able to do with the ball, with individual actions, I haven’t seen it. It’s not the plan to play in certain areas when you don’t have the ball but they force you to do that, so even more credit to the players.”Arteta also praised his own players and staff, making clear that his gratitude was not only about the trophies and finals, but the daily work that carried Arsenal through the season.“What I said to the players and the staff is that if I tell them one million times ‘thank you’, it’s not going to be enough,” Arteta said. “It’s not because we won the Premier League and it’s not because we played the League Cup final, it’s not because we played the Champions League final in the manner that we’ve done.“It’s because of the joy and the moments that we have lived together every single day and that’s above anything else.”Photo by David Ramos/Getty ImagesOn Gabriel taking the fifth penalty, Arteta said, “He wanted to take number five honestly. We have prepared and trained for this moment. Normally the penalty takers would be Bukayo, Martin, Kai for sure.“We knew that if we got extra time on penalties, the penalty takers would be different players, still with the quality when you see Ebz take penalties in training, he doesn’t miss any, but then you have to do in this moment. It’s unfortunate not to have the same precision and efficiency that they had and that’s the reason that we haven’t won.”The squad will still return to a parade in north London, where supporters will celebrate the league title after a 22-year wait. Arteta admitted the Champions League defeat will hurt on that occasion too, but said the day should still be meaningful.“To the people, I already know how the team feels about them,” Arteta said.“We are very grateful for the support they have given us throughout the season, in times of difficulty, as they have been with us, and it has been a real joy to win a league after 22 years. It hurts, it hurts a lot for them not to win, because I can’t even imagine what would have happened.“We all had a huge desire to win it and tomorrow [Sunday] will be a beautiful day for sure.”

Titans' Jeffery Simmons' dominance revealed by eye-opening NFL stat
For years, Tennessee Titans fans have known Jeffery Simmons is one of the NFL's premier defensive linemen. Now, a new statistic from Next Gen Stats provides further evidence that the rest of the league should recognize it as well.According to the data pulled by NFL Senior Researcher Tony Holzman-Escareno, Simmons ranks second in the NFL with 70 quarterback pressures generated while facing double teams since 2021. The only player ahead of him is Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Quinnen Williams, who mentioned that Simmons might win Defensive Player of the Year under his former coach, Robert Saleh. Most QB pressures after double team over the last 5 seasons (since 2021), per @NextGenStats: 1. Quinnen Williams - 732. Jeffery Simmons - 703. Osa Odighizuwa - 664. Dexter Lawrence - 655. Jonathan Allen - 646. Jarran Reed - 597. Vita Vea - 587. Kobie Turner - 589.…— NFL Researcher (@NFL_Researcher) May 29, 2026The stat is significant because it measures something that you can't view in a box score. It also displays just how dominant Simmons has been despite the Titans' downfall over the last five seasons.Simmons continues winning despite extra attentionThe 2021 season was Simmons' third season in the NFL, and was his first Pro Bowl appearance and All-Pro team acknowledgement. He has since made the Pro Bowl four of the last five seasons, including making an All-Pro team in three of those five seasons. Last season was special for Simmons, as he achieved a career-high in sacks and QB hits with 11 and 21, respectively. Most impressive in his recent dominance is that opposing offenses have consistently game-planned for him as Tennessee's biggest defensive threat.Despite those additional blockers and a transitioning defense, Simmons has continued finding ways to disrupt opposing quarterbacks. This stat reinforces why the Titans' offseason additions could benefit Simmons moving forward, as an improved pass rush around him would make him borderline unstoppable. This latest metric serves as another reminder that Tennessee still possesses one of football's most dominant interior defensive linemen. This article originally appeared on Titans Wire: Tennessee Titans: Next Gen Stats proved Jeffery Simmons' dominance

Delta girls tennis wins semi-state to clinch 7th IHSAA state finals berth
Three years ago, Delta girls tennis went to the IHSAA state finals when the program's current seniors were freshmen.Three years later, those seniors punched tickets to state again and will finish their careers where they started. The Eagles traveled to Fort Wayne for the Homestead semi-state to take on the host Spartans in a top-20 matchup — No. 15 Delta vs. No. 18 Homestead — according to the Indiana High School Tennis Coaches Association poll. Delta won the match, 4-1, Saturday, May 30, to clinch the seventh state finals appearance in school history and first since 2023."We've got a lot of experience, but I think our best characteristic is just our ability to be locked in at practice day after day," Delta coach Tim Cleland said. "We have a pretty good understanding of what we do well, and we try to stick with that. It sounds simple, but not everybody understands what they do well and what they struggle with."More: Yorktown softball lives up to No. 1 ranking with sectional dominanceWhile Delta plays plenty of experience with five seniors out of seven varsity players, their opponent was quite the opposite with zero seniors. No. 1 singles was the only match where the Spartans had an advantage in experience with junior Caroline Meier facing Delta freshman Sophie Crabtree. While she did manage to win a few games this time, Crabtree was the Eagles' only lost match as Meier won, 6-2, 6-4, and advanced to the individual singles state finals.Just as they have been all postseason, Delta's doubles teams were dominant to give the Eagles the advantage in the match. Junior Alexa Bratton and senior Kate Manor won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles over Homestead junior Nadia Cowan and sophomore Emma Cook, while seniors Elizabeth Bamidele and Rowan Hinds won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2 doubles.Manor has played No. 1 doubles since her freshman year when she was on Delta's last state qualifying team, and as the all-time winningest player in program history with 95 career victories, she's learned to appreciate each and every one."Semi-state, we haven't been there since freshman year, so honestly, going into it just makes it a lot more special," Manor said. "Being with Alexa, after winning against Westfield, it's just awesome to keep winning and keep going. We're really starting to pick up how we play with each other, really keeping the energy up."Not far behind Manor on the Delta girls tennis all-time wins leaderboard is Hinds, who won her 89th career match at No. 2 doubles. The Eagles gave away a 3-1 lead in the second set but won the last three games to clinch a 6-4 win and the match. The duo improved to 25-0 on the year, a record which Bamidele attributed to Hinds' nerves of steel."First set, it was 6-2, trying to come out more aggressive, I was definitely a little nervous and had some jitters," Bamidele said. "Just having Rowan there with her cool, calm, collected demeanor really helped. We just kept it going, and then second set, we had a bit of a kerfuffle when we were up 3-1 and Homestead, like we expected, wasn't going to back down. They kept fighting back and got it to a point where it was 3-4 for them."Having our coaches behind us, our teammates telling us, 'You got this, just breathe,' and switching up our game plan a little bit, that helped us take it back to 4-4, then 5-4, and from there, we just kept fighting, playing smart but not safe."At No. 3 singles, Delta senior Stella Sieber and Homestead freshman Julia Hansen produced the only three-set match of the day. Sieber started strong by taking the first set, 6-1, but then gave up a 6-3 loss in the second set. The doubles teams had just given Delta a 2-1 lead when Sieber's third set began, and the first-year varsity player handed the Eagles the semi-state title with a 6-0 set that Cleland called "nearly flawless."Meanwhile, the most exciting match of the day came at No. 2 singles, where Delta senior Olivia Marshall faced Homestead sophomore Natalie Christoff. Marshall claimed the first set, 7-5, but the second set got dicey as she trailed by as much as 4-1. Despite facing set point twice, Marshall battled back to 6-6 and force a tiebreaker. Christoff had given her some trouble with a very hard slice, but Marshall focused on keeping the ball deep to avoid setting up those slice opportunities and was able to rally back as a result.Marshall would eventually win the tiebreak for a 7-5, 7-6 (3) victory."I think the Westfield match really gave me confidence going into the semi-state match because I just proved to myself that I could do it in a tough match when it really comes down to it," Marshall said. "Just thinking about the little things I can do, one point at a time, anything I can do to make my team go to the next round."Marshall and Sieber were both freshmen the last time Delta girls made it to state in 2023, but neither of them were varsity level players at that point. Bamidele was also a JV player that year, while Bratton was in eighth grade and Crabtree in sixth (though Crabtree attended Hauser at the time). Their growth in three short years has allowed them to go from state finals spectators to competitors.Delta is the smallest public school left standing in the IHSAA girls tennis state championship hunt with 825 students. To reach the state finals, they've taken down two significantly larger schools with highly-ranked programs in Westfield (3,064 students) and Homestead (2,345 students)."It's fantastic because it's hard to reach that level. It's a single-class sport, and only eight teams make it out of 310," Cleland said. "You can be really good and still not make it, as a lot of teams are finding out here in the last week. It's never a guarantee. We've had a couple of difficult matches here in the last few days, even today, there was a point where it was still up for grabs. Homestead made some good runs at us, and we had to dig pretty deep."A similar story awaits at state finals, where Delta will meet No. 8 Munster (1,474 students) at North Central High School. The Eagles and Mustangs will face off at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 5.Contact Cade Hampton via email at cbhampton@usatodayco.com or on X, formerly known as Twitter, @CadeHamp10.This article originally appeared on Muncie Star Press: Delta girls tennis tops Homestead for IHSAA semi-state championship

RCB in IPL Finals: A look at Royal Challengers Bengaluru's record before GT clash
As Royal Challengers Bengaluru prepare to take on Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2026 final, they do so carrying a history filled with heartbreak, near misses and, finally, redemption.RCB will be appearing in their fifth IPL final and have experienced almost every emotion the tournament's biggest stage can offer. For years, they were known as one of the league's most talented teams without a title to show for it. That narrative finally changed in 2025 when they lifted their maiden IPL trophy.Royal Challengers Bengaluru in IPL FinalsSeasonOpponentResultMarginCaptain2009Deccan ChargersLostBy 6 runsAnil Kumble2011Chennai Super KingsLostBy 58 runsDaniel Vettori2016Sunrisers HyderabadLostBy 8 runsVirat Kohli2025Punjab KingsWonChampionsRajat Patidar2026Gujarat TitansTo be played-Rajat PatidarTheir first shot at the title came in 2009 under the captaincy of Anil Kumble. Playing the final in Johannesburg, RCB looked well placed to claim the crown before suffering a late collapse and eventually losing to Deccan Chargers by six runs in a nail-biting contest. Two years later, they returned to the summit clash under Daniel Vettori. However, the 2011 final proved far more one-sided as Chennai Super Kings outclassed RCB by 58 runs to successfully defend their title.RCB's next opportunity arrived in 2016 during one of the most memorable individual seasons in IPL history. Led by Virat Kohli, who enjoyed a record-breaking campaign with the bat, Bengaluru entered the final as favourites against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Yet despite a strong start in the chase, they fell agonisingly short, losing by eight runs and extending their wait for a maiden title. That defeat left another painful scar on a franchise that had now lost three IPL finals without ever lifting the trophy. No team had lost as many IPL finals before winning their first championship. The breakthrough finally came nine years later. In IPL 2025, RCB ended years of disappointment by defeating Punjab Kings in the final and securing their maiden IPL title. The long-awaited triumph transformed the franchise's legacy and removed one of the biggest talking points in IPL history. Now, as they prepare for another final against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad, RCB have a chance to achieve something they have never done before: successfully defend the IPL crown. From the heartbreaks of 2009, 2011 and 2016 to the glory of 2025, RCB's journey in IPL finals has been anything but ordinary. Another victory would not only deliver a second title but also make them only the third franchise in IPL history to successfully defend the trophy.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi ‘more than ready’ for India, Sanga predicts call-up ‘very, very soon’
NEW CHANDIGARH: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is “more than ready” for a senior national team call-up following his spectacular performance in the 2026 Indian Premier League, according to Rajasthan Royals head coach and director of cricket Kumar Sangakkara. The 15-year-old finished a sensational breakout tournament on Friday night with a counter-attacking 47-ball 96 against the Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 2. Although the Royals fell short of reaching the final, the teenage prodigy’s extraordinary run throughout the two-month tournament has placed him squarely in the frame for national selection.Speaking to reporters after the match, Sangakkara explicitly backed the ‘boy wonder’ to handle the pressures of international cricket immediately, discarding the usual administrative caution associated with handling such young players.“You never know if anyone’s ready until they play. And with everything Vaibhav’s shown against some of the best bowlers in the world, I think he’s more than ready to take on any challenge that you throw at him,” Sangakkara said. “And I’m sure that he’ll get that call-up very, very soon.”Sooryavanshi’s statistical returns in IPL-2026 justify the head coach’s ringing endorsement. The left-handed opening batter smashed 776 runs across 16 matches at an average of 48.50. He disrupted standard T20 opening blueprints by maintaining a staggering tournament strike-rate of 237.30, registering five half-centuries and a century. His prolific run-scoring also saw him become the fastest batsman in IPL history to complete 1,000 runs. He also smashed 72 sixes in the season, breaking Chris Gayle’s 14-year-old record of 59 sixes in a single IPL edition; a feat Gayle achieved when Sooryavanshi was only a year old. While his aggressive strokeplay defined several wins for the Royals in the season, it was his tactical awareness and composure during the high-stakes playoff stages that most impressed his coach. In Qualifier 2, after the Royals suffered early losses, Sooryavanshi held the innings together to help the team reach a competitive total.“I thought he batted brilliantly (in Qualifier 2 against Gujarat Titans),” Sangakkara said. “It was a much tougher batting innings with wickets falling around him and he held his nerve and really got us to a defendable total. The guy, for 15-years-old, is very mature, he reads the game really well, he reads situations well and he’s got no fear.”“He’s batted with a lot of maturity, he has shouldered the responsibility of that opening partnership so well for us this season,” the former Sri Lankan captain added, praising the teenager’s ability to consistently deliver under pressure at the top of the order. With the national selectors currently monitoring options ahead of India’s upcoming international T20 assignments, the Royals are already planning to look after their young asset during the off-season. Sangakkara noted that the franchise’s support staff, in coordination with their medical team, will design customized training and physical programs at their academy to manage his workload.“We’ll sit down with our medical team and go through what he might need and then support him. We’ll run our camps; he’ll have enough practice opportunities with us. So, we’ll be keeping a very close eye,” Sangakkara said.Crucially, the franchise wants to protect the young opener from tactical clutter and the external noise of sudden stardom, allowing him to maintain his natural, uninhibited style.“We don’t clutter his mind too much,” Sangakkara said. “He comes to all our team meetings, he contributes, he listens, and he does a lot of homework. He practises well and he reads bowlers well, he watches their videos and prepares himself really well.”The former Sri Lanka captain stressed that the Royals have been careful not to burden the teenage sensation with excessive advice, preferring instead to let him trust his instincts and play with freedom.“We don’t want to put any unnecessary thoughts into his head. I think a clear mind, batting with that courage is exactly what we want to see of him. Overloading people with information is never good. So, we keep things pretty simple when we can,” the coach said.

Iga Świątek is not back, because the tennis she wants to play never left her
PARIS – It has been a good week to be Iga Świątek. The four-time French Open champion is back on her beloved red clay. The sun has been shining. The scorching heat at Roland Garros has made the topspin on her forehand even more potent than usual. The fates have been on her side, too, in cahoots with the weather. She avoided a bear trap of a third-round matchup against her personal Achilles heel, Jelena Ostapenko, after the Latvian lost to Świątek’s compatriot Magda Linette.Later that same day, the draw opened further when No. 2 seed Elena Rybakina was upset by Yulia Starodubtseva in the second round, meaning the high seed in Rybakina’s quarter of the draw – Świątek’s hypothetical semifinal opponent – is No. 8 Mirra Andreeva. Most importantly, after feeling lost in the tennis wilderness for a spell earlier this year, Świątek is feeling clear-headed and balanced enough to take advantage of whatever unfolds in front of her. She’s through to the fourth round of her first Grand Slam tournament with her new coach of two months, Francisco Roig. There, she faces No. 15 seed Marta Kostyuk, against whom she has a 3-0 record.“I feel like the decision-making has been better, and that’s an improvement,” Świątek said Friday. “I mean, after how I played in the States, honestly, anything better is positive.”Across two WTA 1000 tournaments, the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells, Calif. and the Miami Open, Świątek went on a brief, impactful run. She lost the world No. 2 ranking to Rybakina after exiting Indian Wells in the quarterfinals. Then, in Florida, she suffered a shocking second-round loss to Linette, her countrywoman, after receiving a first-round bye. Then the world No. 50, Linette broke Świątek’s streak of 73 opening-match wins, which dated back to 2021.It proved a tipping point for Świątek, who said after that tennis felt “complicated” in her head, a flashing red warning sign for a player whose best victories had always featured a fluid balance of offense and defense. Instead of adapting during matches, she’d freeze, and, more often than not, default to overhitting.Swiatek appeared caught between two styles. There was the direct, simple, first-strike tennis preached by Tomasz Wiktorowski, with whom Świątek won four of her Grand Slam titles. And there was the more patient, variety-laced style that she first played when she burst onto the scene in 2020 by winning this tournament, and which she had started to reintroduce with the support of coach Wim Fisette, who replaced Wiktorowski toward the end of the 2024 season.Świątek reached the 2025 Australian Open semifinals and won Wimbledon that summer, but her successes were always intermixed with similar losses. Her serve didn’t earn her free points, so she had to grind through almost every point as a rally. Pressure would build on her baseline game, errors would inevitably arrive, and the cycle would spiral Świątek into lopsided scorelines in deciding sets.Świątek fired Fisette three days after the loss to Linette in March. She said her goal in the next chapter was to become a “wall on the court.”She turned to tennis’s great manufacturer of sturdy ones: Spain.Świątek spent a few healing days in Mallorca, training at her idol Rafael Nadal’s academy. Nadal was present for two of her practices, and she hired one of his former coaches, Roig, who she said integrated with her team well with his distinct sense of humor. He took her to play golf at the Madrid Open, and tore his Achilles tendon playing a volleying game with her during a public practice at the Italian Open in Rome. He invited her entire team to the red-carpet premiere of the new Netflix docuseries about Nadal, only to realize he had the wrong month – after everyone had gotten all dressed up to go out.“He is really a positive person. He can talk to everybody, and he’s really relaxed, but he can easily switch to, you know, being a person that is decisive in the team and also a person that needs to tell me what to do,” Świątek said Friday. “So it’s a nice mix. There is a really good balance in that, I feel.”Their shared goal isn’t so different from what Świątek and Fisette were trying to achieve. Świątek has to evolve, now that the rest of women’s tennis has caught up to the powerful style that once allowed her to dominate. But Roig’s method has made a difference. They’ve been training differently than she did with Fisette — longer rallies became the norm in practice, and Świątek’s confidence in her decision-making has rebounded.“You need to have this feeling in your head that you’re not going to miss a ball,” Swiatek said in April, at the Madrid Open. “I feel, honestly, this Spanish type of coaching really helps that. … After these practices in Mallorca, I’ve been able to not make any rash decisions.”Roig adjusted her footwork, too, instructing her to stay higher in her stance and emphasizing the importance of staying upright, not leaning too far forward or back.Świątek said she’d felt unstable in her base over the past few months, another warning sign for a player who has perhaps the best footwork in the game.“I felt like I wanted to be more ready and slower, but that made me quite heavy on the ground, so you need to find a balance,” Świątek said. “Tennis is about smoothness and being fluid, adapting to different kind of situations. When you’re just stuck with your legs and trying to be low, you’re not going to react that fast.”Swiatek is adapting better now – or at least, she doesn’t find the puzzle of adapting as rattling as she did a few months ago.At the French Open, her second-round match against the world No. 35 Sara Bejlek was a win in straight sets which Świątek dictated from first ball to last, but it was hardly clean. She had 38 unforced errors and struggled with closing out points assertively. She felt she had too many opportunities to attack against Bejlek, which made it hard to determine when she should stay back and wait or go for the crushing blow. When Świątek described that challenge in her news conference, the change in her since March became clear. Then, she was agonized. Now, she is breezy.“I didn’t mind,” Świątek said of how unpredictable she found Bejlek’s style. “I wanted to be flexible and adjust and play my game. Sometimes I had some moments where the mistakes happened, but at the end I feel like I was the one that had control over the game, and it was up to me if I’m going to finish this points or make a mistake. In important moments, I was focused and patient enough to play solid.”Her third-round win Friday provided a nice benchmark for her tennis since the coaching change. She played Linette again and beat her 6-4, 6-4, this time. Like in her match against Bejlek, she wasn’t perfect — her shot selection wasn’t flawless, her intensity flailed in the second set — but it didn’t matter. Świątek was in control. And when she missed, it wasn’t because of two warring voices inside her head.“It was hard to play with my intuition on the hard court season this year. I feel like we focused a lot on that with Francisco at the beginning,” she said.“Also, for me to not be rushed into decisions because, I don’t know, I feel like I’m going to miss or something. So I feel much more solid, and that gives me confidence that I can play the next ball back and next ball back, you know, that I don’t need to finish the rally straightaway.“Now I feel that, for most of time, I make good decisions, and kind of rationally. There are moments where I go for it, especially in this weather, maybe a bit too much, you know?”Świątek knows she’ll have to recalibrate for the much cooler conditions that arrived Sunday ahead of her match against Kostyuk, which figure to stick around for the remainder of the French Open.In that weather, she’ll be able to swing through the ball more without it flying long, but there will be other factors she’ll have to adjust, too. Świątek seems confident doing so these days. It doesn’t feel so complicated to turn one good week into two. This article originally appeared in The Athletic.Tennis, Women's Tennis2026 The Athletic Media Company

RCB vs GT head-to-head: Five wins to four; Royal Challengers Bengaluru's narrow edge over Titans faces ultimate test in IPL final
The IPL 2026 final in Ahmedabad on Sunday will see defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru take on Gujarat Titans in a clash between two teams that have followed different paths to reach the title match.RCB enter the final looking to win their second IPL title in a row. Their campaign has been built around an attacking batting approach, with the likes of Virat Kohli, Devdutt Padikkal, Tim David, captain Rajat Patidar, Phil Salt and Venkatesh Iyer scoring at a rapid pace throughout the season. The Bengaluru batters have largely stuck to the same method regardless of pitch conditions or opposition plans. That approach has occasionally put them under pressure, but it has also helped them post 200-plus totals more often than any other side this season.Patidar's leadership has also played an important role in maintaining stability within the team over the last two seasons.Gujarat Titans, on the other hand, have relied on a different formula. Openers Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan have preferred a measured start in the powerplay, usually scoring at a run rate slightly above nine runs per over rather than going all-out from the beginning.A major reason behind that approach is the dependence on the top order. Gill, Sudharsan and Jos Buttler have carried much of the batting responsibility this season and have delivered consistently. Gill has scored 722 runs at a strike rate of 163, Sudharsan has made 710 runs at a strike rate of 159, while Buttler has contributed 507 runs at a strike rate of 157.The Titans will once again depend heavily on the trio in the final. Their record at home this season may also give them confidence, having won five of their seven matches at the Narendra Modi Stadium. However, they face a strong RCB bowling attack led by Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who is second on the Purple Cap list with 26 wickets. Josh Hazlewood has taken 13 wickets, Rasikh Salam has picked up 16, while Krunal Pandya has contributed 13 wickets and useful runs lower down the order. While RCB appear to have the stronger batting line-up because of their depth and power-hitting options, Gujarat's bowling attack could prove decisive if the Ahmedabad surface offers assistance.Head-to-head recordHead-to-head, the two sides have met nine times in IPL history. RCB have won five matches, while GT have won four. The teams have already faced each other three times this season. RCB won two of those contests, while GT won once, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad — the same venue that will host the final. Both teams also have good memories of the ground. RCB defeated Punjab Kings there to win their first IPL title last season, while Gujarat Titans beat Rajasthan Royals at the same venue to lift the 2022 trophy in their debut IPL season. GT also reached the 2023 final in Ahmedabad but lost to Chennai Super Kings.

Bradenton high school graduate wins spot on Ireland flag football team
Maddie Baehr didn’t get to do any of the fun things usually associated with Memorial Day weekend. No beach. No boating. No barbecues.“I was invited to a lot of graduation parties, too, but I had to decline,” said the recent Braden River High grad. And why’s that?Maddie’s reason floored folks.“I’m playing flag football for Ireland!”Indeed, instead of hanging out on Anna Maria Island, Maddie was in Ireland last weekend, seeing relatives in County Cork before accompanying Ireland’s Women’s National Flag Football Team to the Netherlands. There the elite two-sport athlete and her Irish teammates are playing in a friendly tournament this weekend against Sweden and the host Dutch in Amsterdam’s Olympic Stadium, a prelude to the sports’ debut at the 2028 LA Summer Olympics.“It’s been a little bit of a dream,” said Maddie’s mom, Mary.A dream come true for her 18-year-old daughter. She holds dual citizenship thanks to Mom, whose mother was an Irish immigrant, pursuing the registration process a couple of years ago.“I swear, when I got my Irish citizenship, I joked, wouldn’t that be crazy if we did something like this?” Maddie said. “I was so intrigued by the possibility.”Luck o’ the Irish?Turns out one of Mom’s many Irish cousins had a team contact, the Baehrs followed up and, lo’ and behold, Maddie was invited to tryouts in Dublin. So she and dad Matt flew there last February.“I didn’t know what to expect. It’s definitely different than how it’s played here, but you could tell they have skills that come from their sports like Gaelic football and soccer. They’re such great athletes.”So is Maddie. An honorable mention All-State defender in flag football and a Herald-Tribune All-Area soccer midfielder, the McNeese State soccer commit has the chops, all right, and speed, too.Maddie made the team.“I was so excited when I got the call. Having Irish roots, it just felt awesome.”For reasons deeper than flag football.“I never really had that cultural aspect in my life, especially living so far away,” she said. “But now, being able to go over there more often, a bonus with being on this team, actually immersing myself in Ireland, being a part of Irish culture, seeing my family that much more, is going to be amazing. I feel so connected to it.”That’s broadened Maddie’s appreciation of what wearing the Irish jersey means, even if it’s going to take a balancing act with her soccer commitments at McNeese going forward.“Our team doesn’t just represent the Republic of Ireland. We represent Northern Ireland, as well. I know a lot of Irish want a united Ireland and having a team representing both is cool. We have girls from Northern Ireland and they’re so lovely, so nice and welcoming to someone from America.”And you can bet Maddie’s new teammates are taking her along for some Irish “craic” in Amsterdam, one of Europe’s hippest cities, when they’re not on the playing field.“We’ve definitely got some team bonding scheduled. It’ll be fun.”Vin’s People runs Sundays. Email Vin Mannix at vinspeople@gmail.com. Reports are Commanders looked great in OTAs: Be careful
What do the NFL offseason and MLB Spring Training have in common?"This is where it is pure optimism; everything is ahead of you. You know, all the changes look great." That was how Ben Standig, a local DMV media reporter who has covered the Washington Commanders and Wizards for years. He shared this brief summary with Brian Mitchell and J.P. Finlay on their 106.7 The Fan show," BMitch and Finlay," on Friday.Standig is exactly correct. I can recall back in the 1970s, I'd watch everything I could from the training camp of the Redskins. Those sports anchors and sports reporters had me so psyched each year, leading me to think the Redskins were not only going to be better that season, they were going to be much better and contenders for the Super Bowl. Then the actual regular season would begin, and so would the close losses, the injuries. The players who were signed, traded, or drafted by Washington were actually much more human and not nearly as dynamic or superior as I had been led to believe in the offseason.I don't think I caught on until I was in college. Perhaps because I was maturing into adulthood and wasn't as naive. Perhaps also because I was playing small-college basketball and began to realize that all the new recruits who show up each year are mortals, and their statistics from a lower level of play (in that case, high school) don't match up with better competition. How does all of that relate to the 2026 Washington Commanders? Actually, in everything. I continue to marvel at fans on X or DC radio, who, though adults, still don't get it. They still haven't learned the lesson. Even more, I heard a Washington Commanders player this very week, who, having been in the NFL for a few years, should know better, but he apparently has yet to learn. It was amazing to listen to him this week talk about how the Commanders are going to dominate this year. Seemingly, he has yet to realize that, from year to year in the NFL, there are very few teams that dominate. The NFL is a week-to-week league, with each week bringing several competitive games. So, when you are getting all excited about OTA reports, remind yourself they are not even making any contact, and they certainly aren't working out against another team. Do we hope 2026 is another Washington winning season? Of course we do. But when you have been following this team closely for 57 years, you do pick up on some trends from time to time. This article originally appeared on Commanders Wire: Washington Commanders: Be careful of glowing practice reviews

Suryakumar Yadav's future in doubt as BCCI ignores him for probable Asian Games squad
NEW DELHI: The Indian cricket board (BCCI) may well be preparing a succession plan to carry out a leadership transition in the T20I team. Current captain Suryakumar Yadav, who led India to a T20 World Cup title in March, doesn’t feature in the 30-man long list given to Indian Olympic Association (IOA) for the Asian Games in due to be held in Aichi-Nagoya from Sept 19 to Oct 4.The national selectors are due to give their first-choice 15 for the event by the second week of June. TOI has learnt that it was pre-decided that the selectors will look at captaincy options in the Asian Games when they were asked to prepare a list in Jan. BCCI will consult with the govt to decide if the first-choice T20 players are to be sent for the Asian Games. The cricket event starts on Sept 23 and the Indian team is slated to play three ODIs against West Indies at home from Sept 28 followed by five T20Is from Oct 6. The long list contains all the big names including Jasprit Bumrah except Surya and Shubman Gill. Gill is supposed to lead the ODI team against West Indies. 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was already shortlisted in Jan.The last date for making changes to the list was May 14. India are the defending champions. Ruturaj Gaikwad had led a young Indian team to an Asian Games gold medal in Hangzhou in 2023. Gaikwad too has been ignored for this edition. As for Surya’s future, the selectors are likely to meet next week before India’s one-off Test against Afghanistan to pick the T20I and ODI teams for India’s tour of Ireland and England in June-July. The selectors may also finalise the Asian Games squad besides picking the India ‘A’ team for a first-class tour of Sri Lanka before India play a two-Test series there. It is learnt that Surya’s future will be in focus in the meeting. Surya has been woefully out of form in international cricket for two years and has struggled miserably in the IPL this year.“The selectors are looking at possible captaincy options before taking a call on Surya. While Shreyas Iyer and Sanju Samson appear to be contenders, vice-captain Axar Patel’s name has also been floated to do the job before the selectors zero down on a clear successor. It will also be seen if Surya will be given another tour to rediscover his touch as a player. The next selection meeting will make things clear,” a BCCI source told TOI.“It was decided in Jan that Surya will not be part of the Asian Games. The focus is on ODI World Cup preparations. There are a few players in the long list who play the ODI format too. The govt will prefer if the BCCI sends a full-strength team to the Asian Games. A call on the Asian Games teams will be taken after consulting the govt,” the source added.Longlist to IOA: Yashasvi Jaiswal, Abhishek Sharma, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson (wk), Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant (wk), Hardik Pandya, Rinku Singh, Tilak Varma, Jasprit Bumrah, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Prasidh Krishna, Varun Chakravarthy, Anukul Roy, Ayush Badoni, , Harsh Dubey, Dhruv Jurel, Khaleel Ahmed, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ravi Bishnoi, Shahbaz Ahmed, Shivam Dube, Vipraj Nigam Nigam, Harshit Rana, Yash Thakur, Washington Sundar.

One family, three schools, lots of baseball: Gasper twins enjoy sectional matchup
The early afternoon sun is shining down as Julie Gasper sits on the metal bleachers at Park Tudor's baseball field. She's positioned directly behind home plate, Park Tudor supporters to her left, University supporters to her right with her husband, George, perched a few rows above her. The Gaspers know by the end of Saturday's Class 2A Sectional 42 semifinal game one of their sons will be advancing to the sectional championship and the other's junior season will be over."I'm rooting for everybody today," Julie said. The Gaspers remain neutral for this crucial tournament matchup because they have sons on both sides. David plays the corner infield positions at University. Dominic as an outfielder and pitcher at Park Tudor. The twin brothers born just 90 seconds apart are forging separate academic and athletic paths."It just evolved into it," George said of having twins at different schools. "Especially with having twins, you try to raise each one to be their own person. ... In some ways they've become better friends by separating. As they do their own things and have their own lives, they've also become really good friends along the way."While the twins prepare to face off against each other, younger brother Ryan is three days removed from winning his sectional opener as a member of Brebeuf Jesuit's baseball team. With three sons at three different schools who all play baseball, being supportive parents is a logistical challenge. Julie has a four-page color-coded spreadsheet to keep all the games, dates and locations squared away. She usually attends home games while George travels to away games. If one of their sons is pitching, George will choose that game to attend. Now that their oldest sons can drive, getting everyone to practices and games is a little easier. The methodical way the family goes about navigating athletic schedules is the same way they approached their son's academic careers. The family explored all the curriculums available to them to make sure their sons had the best choices possible. David is a business-focused student involved with DECA and other entrepreneurial programs offered at University. Dominic is focused on math and computer science. Ryan enjoys history and science. The family also considered attending their local high school, Zionsville, but ultimately, they feel their sons' needs are best met at three separate schools. "Each kid has different educational needs and things that they're interested in and wanted to focus on," Julie said. "We let each kid choose which school they wanted to attend, and which school met their academic needs. They're all really strong students, so their driving force is their school." Since University and Park Tudor play in the same sectional, the family knew there was a possibility their sons would meet in the postseason. They hoped the teams would play in the sectional championship, but Saturday's winner advances to play Monrovia on Monday. David's third-inning RBI single cut University's deficit to one. Finn Steiner tied the game at 3-3 with an RBI single in the fifth. Beckett Suh put the Trailblazers ahead for good with an RBI single in the sixth. The twins always played on the same team as youth players. David admitted that Saturday was a little weird for him and his brother, but Dominic said they still exchanged some playful trash talk before the game. David, the older brother, earned bragging rights over Dominic, but both enjoyed the time spent on the field together. "It was fun around the house. We were trash talking a little bit," Dominic said. "I know a bunch of the guys on his team; he knows a bunch of the guys on this team. It was just fun. Games like this, we wouldn't get this if we were on the same team." Manchester City must be tactically perfect against ‘tricky’ Brighton says Jeglertz
Manchester City must be tactically perfect against ‘tricky’ Brighton says JeglertzManchester City head coach Andrée Jeglertz says that his side must be tactically perfect when they face Brighton & Hove Albion in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup final at Wembley this afternoon. The Cityzens are aiming to win the competition for the first time in six years and complete a league and cup double in the process.Manchester City won one and lost one against Brighton & Hove Albion in the regular season. When speaking in the pre-match press conference, head coach Jeglertz said that he is expecting another difficult game against The Seagulls.“This could be a tough game,” Jeglertz said. “Both of the games against them this season have been tight, we’ve won one and lost one. It’s a tough opponent but we are a good team with good confidence at the moment. I’m pretty sure it’ll be an exciting game.”Manchester City slipped to a 3-2 defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion last month and Jeglertz highlighted the need for his side to get their tactics right this time around. He said “Brighton are a tricky team because they have a lot of tactical changes during a game. We have to be on the front-foot all of the time because things are continuously changing. We need to be tactically perfect.“In the last game, they scored goals in moments of the game where I think we lost a little bit of patience, that will not happen on Sunday. We are fully-prepared for tactical changes that we haven’t forecasted or seen before. We are ready for that.”Jeglertz has coached teams in many big games and he says that a Wembley FA Cup final also ranks very high.He said “Right now, it’s the biggest one because it’s the next game that you’re playing. It’ll always be my answer that the next game is the biggest one.“I’ve never been to Wembley, so just going to the stadium will be huge. It’s difficult to compare with the other games; you play Champions League finals (which I have), tournaments with national teams are also very big. “Having this moment now after a couple of good weeks of celebration and preparation and the last thing we are doing is playing this huge game; of course, it’s something very rare that people are getting opportunities for that. It’ll be a very big game for me.”The 2025/2026 Adobe Women’s FA Cup final between Brighton & Hove Albion and Manchester City kicks-off at 3pm.

Baldanzi to complete permanent move to Genoa this week
Baldanzi to complete permanent move to Genoa this weekTommaso Baldanzi and Daniele De Rossi, a duo destined to make Genoa’s fortunes. The coach brought the attacking midfielder to the capital, then asked the club to rejoin him just a few months ago as part of their bid to avoid relegation. The Rossoblu have survived; the number 8 wasn’t crucial, but he’s destined to stay in Liguria. The Grifone manager is expected to stay at Ferraris for at least another year, and the primary objective for next season is the retention of the attacking midfielder, who will, at least formally, return to the capital. The details remain to be finalized, but the deal is just a formality.According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the deal that would bring Baldanzi back to Genoa is expected to be finalized next week. Roma is preparing to set aside a significant sum of money to enter the transfer window, where the Giallorossi will have a lot of moves to make. In addition to the 2003-born player, another player is ready to leave for Liguria. This is Lorenzo Venturino, who arrived on loan alongside the attacking midfielder, who failed to convince Gian Piero Gasperini. It remains to be seen what the future holds for him: De Rossi had admitted that he was a talented player and could find space at the Rossoblu, but Como is interested.

Nightmare after the Indy 500: The killing of Mari Hulman's husband, Elmer George, 50 years ago
INDIANAPOLIS — Four hours after the 1976 Indianapolis 500 ended, as the rainy, overcast sky brought an early darkness to Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Elmer George and his wife, Mari Hulman, were spotted inside the president's exclusive third floor suite overlooking Turn 2 — and they were in the middle of a heated argument."Mrs. George, in tears, was seen being comforted by an unidentified woman near the suite about 7 p.m. Sunday," IndyStar reported at the time.Earlier that month, on May 3, 1976, Mari had filed for divorce from Elmer, court records show. And around IMS, the rumors were flying that the "it" couple of the Speedway was on the outs.Elmer George, 47, was a former Indy 500 driver turned vice president of IMS, in charge of its international radio network. Mari Hulman, 41, was the daughter of Anton (Tony) Hulman, who had bought the track in 1945, saving it from almost certain ruin.Mari and Elmer had been married 18 years, a romance that began when Mari, just 20 years old, partnered with a longtime family friend, Roger Wolcott, to form the HOW racing team. That team fielded sprint cars for drivers, including Jerry Hoyt, Eddie Sachs, Tony Bettenhausen, Roger McCluskey — and Elmer George. The racing bond between Mari and Elmer evolved and, two years later, had turned to wedding bells. They were married in April 1957.But by 1976, there was a shadow over their relationship, a shadow that would be deadly. His name was Guy M. Trolinger, a 34-year-old horse trainer who worked at the Hulman family farm. After Elmer's argument with Mari at IMS, he was seen leaving the track. He made the 73-mile drive to Terre Haute to a two-story, white farmhouse on the Hulman estate where Trolinger lived, police reports say.Elmer was armed with a .22 caliber, semi-automatic pistol."As the puzzle comes together, it presents a picture of George as a kind of stranger in his own house, jealous, moody, protective of his children," IndyStar reported June 3, 1976, three days after Elmer was killed. "A picture also emerges of Trolinger, the handsome horse wrangler, who had gotten very close to Mari."Gunfight ensued in Terre HauteThe discord between Mari, Elmer and Trolinger had been weeks in the making, maybe months, but on Indy 500 race day in 1976, it was at a boiling point.Trolinger was a married father of two children, who had come to work for the Hulman family in January 1975, training quarter horses and being a caretaker of the farm. In the year and four months that passed before the shooting, Mari and Trolinger "became close companions," the Indianapolis News reported. At the time of the shooting, Trolinger was in the middle of a divorce from his wife in New Mexico, where he had lived before coming to Terre Haute. On race day 1976, Elmer called Trolinger, "Mari's alleged boyfriend," IndyStar reported at the time, from the Speedway. On that phone call, police said, Elmer told Trolinger to vacate the caretaker's house on the Hulman farm. He was not welcome there. Elmer gave Trolinger an ultimatum. As the 60th running of the Indianapolis 500 played out on May 30, 1976, with Johnny Rutherford winning from the pole position driving for McLaren in the shortest Indy 500 officially completed due to storms, Elmer watched. And he cheered. But later that night, after he and Mari's argument, he pulled up to the Hulman farm and parked his Buick 500-mile race pace car on a road near the house where Trolinger lived. Elmer used a crowbar and hammer to pry open the back door of the home, police said.Just after midnight on May 31, 1976, a gunfight ensued in Terre Haute, and it ended with a killing.Elmer was struck by five .22 caliber rifle shots, one in the face and one in the stomach and died at the scene, according to police reports. Before he died, Elmer fired at least twice at Trolinger from a small caliber pistol, police said."Elmer was found lying in a pool of blood in the upstairs hallway of a residence on the Hulman farm," IndyStar reported June 1, 1976.Trolinger was not injured. But after calling police to tell them Elmer had been killed in a shootout at his house, he was arrested and held without bond in the Vigo County jail on a charge of assault and battery with intent to kill.'Trolinger broke into tears'The Vigo County grand jury was summoned within days of the killing to hear 23 witnesses during two days of testimony. Among those who took the stand were Mari, A.J. Foyt, Elmer's longtime friend and driver, and Tony Hulman, Mari's father and owner of the Speedway.Foyt was subpoenaed as police believed he had witnessed the argument between Mari and Elmer at IMS after the 1976 Indy 500. Hulman appeared before the grand jury for nearly an hour. Betsy Trolinger, who was in the house at the time of the shooting, and the aunt of Trolinger, testified."It is said that the events of the last year came together after the 500-mile race in the Hulman suite at the Speedway," IndyStar reported. "Pieces of the puzzle are being sifted by the grand jury." On June 4, 1976, five days after the Indy 500, "Trolinger broke into tears when the Vigo County grand jury ruled Elmer's death was justifiable homicide," IndyStar reported. "Vigo Circuit judge, Joseph Anderson, dismissed the charge of assault and battery with an intent to kill against Trolinger and ordered the horse trainer's arrest record cleared."The grand jury ruled that Trolinger killed Elmer in self-defense."My client and myself are very happy because justice was reached this afternoon," Trolinger's court-appointed attorney William Smock said after the verdict. IPL 2026: Sangakkara calls out Curran’s IPL pull-out after allrounder’s Surrey appearances
NEW CHANDIGARH: Rajasthan Royals head coach and director of cricket Kumar Sangakkara was mostly measured and composed after his side lost Qualifier 2 against Gujarat Titans to exit IPL-2026 on Friday. But when Sam Curran’s name came up, the composure acquired a sharper edge.Sangakkara’s didn’t hold back and questioned the English allrounder’s last-minute withdrawal from the tournament, pointing out that the same player who was told to have a “season-ending injury” has now played three Vitality Blast T20 matches for Surrey back home.“We were told that Sam Curran had a season-ending injury, but I think I saw him playing for Surrey for two games or three games now, so that was very disappointing,” Sangakkara said. “We’d have loved to have had him here playing for us.”In a blockbuster IPL trade ahead of the 2026 season, Curran was traded from the Chennai Super Kings to the Rajasthan Royals in a massive double-swap deal with RR getting the services of Ravindra Jadeja and Curran, while CSK got Sanju Samson in exchange. Curran was valued at Rs 2.40 crore in the trade, but pulled out before the tournament began, citing a groin injury. The Royals then brought in Dasun Shanaka as his replacement.Sangakkara’s frustration was clear, as he questioned Curran’s commitment and said, “A proper tight policy around that (injuries and availability for the tournament) is always a requirement. The BCCI does have a strict policy on that. Every person goes through injuries, and if it’s a serious injury, (or) a season-ending injury, of course we understand.”The RR head coach also highlighted how many players in the team gave their all during the season despite not getting much game time. “We’ve had quite a few injuries. We’ve also had players like Adam Milne, (Shimron) Hetmyer, quite a few who’ve come here, not had much of a game. Lhuan-dre Pretorius is another one. Kwena Maphaka is another one. They’ve been here, they’ve done the hard yards, they’ve practiced, they’ve carried water for the team, and they’ve really worked as hard as anyone else to support the team in this journey. It’s really up to that individual player to decide whether they want to come or not,” Sangakkara said.“I think the BCCI policy is very strict now, and that’s the way it should continue to be — very strict; to make sure that contractual obligations are met properly and genuinely. Every side in the IPL will benefit from that,” he added.
