Unbeaten run 'monkey off our back' now, says Murphy
Gloucester-Hartpury are chasing a fourth straight Premiership Women's Rugby title in 2026 [Getty Images]Gloucester-Hartpury head of rugby Dan Murphy says having The Circus' unbeaten Premiership Women's Rugby league run ended is something of a "monkey off the back" for his side. The league-leaders suffered their first defeat of the campaign 41-39 away at Ealing Trailfinders on Friday, meaning their attempts to go the entire PWR season without loss ended at the penultimate hurdle.Their previous defeat had come all the way back in matchday eight of the 2024-25 season, nearly 18 months earlier. Murphy says, however, the run was never at the forefront of his players' minds.Speaking to BBC Radio Gloucester after the defeat, he said: "I have been asked this question [on the importance of the unbeaten run] a lot lately, ever since someone mentioned that Arsenal had done it about 20 years ago."I have always said that this was never something we were going after as a group."This team want to get better as a team and help those around them so that we perform well."We have a lot of that to do this week but the monkey is off our back now, so away we go."Murphy's side are already guaranteed to end the season at the top of the table as they seek a fourth consecutive PWR title - a first under his reign - and will have a home semi-final when the play-offs begin next week. But the 40-year-old believes the loss to Trailfinders is exactly what the rest of the league would have wanted to see with the post-season play-offs approaching."Ealing [Trailfinders] have just shown the rest of the league how to beat us and we need to stop them doing it again," he said."It was a helter-skelter week, bringing everyone back in together after such a long time apart, but we are disappointed to lose the game in the matter we did."To come back and get two points off that game was brilliant and showed what we can do, but need to work out how we get better from today." The Circus now turn their attention to the final fixture of the regular season this Sunday against second-from-bottom Bristol Bears.

But more than anything, it’s the people and friendships I’ve made throughout the game that I’ll cherish forever."To the fans, thank you. To those who supported me every step of the way, your encouragement meant more than you’ll ever know. And to those who gave me grief along the way, thank you too - you all played your part in making the journey memorable and helping shape me as a player and person."To my family, thank you for every sacrifice, every mile travelled and every moment of encouragement. None of this would have been possible without you."I leave the game with immense pride, gratitude and memories that will stay with me for the rest of my life. Football has given me far more than I could ever have imagined, and I will always be thankful for the opportunities it provided."Thank you to everyone who has been part of the journey."Everyone at Leeds United congratulates James on an outstanding career and wishes him every success for the future.

‘We want revenge’: Queensberry and Matchroom tease 5v5 rematch two years later
RIYADH, SAUDI ARABIA - JUNE 1: Frank Warren and Eddie Hearn after the Queensbury 5 vs 5 Matchroom contest finishes with Frank Warrens Queensbury winning the contest on June 1, 2024 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. (Photo by Mark Robinson/Matchroom Boxing/Getty Images) | Getty Images Two years ago today, Frank Warren and Eddie Hearn put forth opposing teams of fighters for a “5v5” event in Riyadh.Warren’s Queensberry side swept the day, 5-0, and Queensberry sent a cheeky reminder to Matchroom today on social media.“Happy anniversary, Matchroom Boxing and Eddie Hearn,” the Queensberry account posted, along with photos from the event. “You ready to run it back?”“We want revenge,” Matchroom’s team replied. The rout started when Willy Hutchinson beat Craig Richards over 12 rounds, followed by Nick Ball taking the WBA featherweight title from Raymond Ford. Hamzah Sheeraz continued the rout with a dominant win over Austin “Ammo” Williams, scoring an 11th round TKO. The heavyweights took over from there. Daniel Dubois stopped Filip Hrgovic on cuts in the eighth round, and Zhilei Zhang halted Deontay Wilder in the fifth round. One idea for this year could see another 5v5 event headlined by Queensberry’s Tyson Fury finally facing Matchroom’s Anthony Joshua. That fight won’t need anything more from a promotional standpoint, but could provide some compelling matchups and some extra sizzle to an already-huge event. If you could see another Queensberry vs Matchroom “5v5” event soon, what would you want to see?

World Cup dream finally sinking in - McKenna
The Scotland squad left Glasgow for the US on Sunday [PA Media]Scotland defender Scott McKenna admits it is only now starting to hit home that he is going to be part of the biggest football show on earth. The Dinamo Zagreb centre-back says the World Cup has "always been at the back of my mind" since qualifying in November, but now that club commitments are out of the way, he is fully focused on helping Scotland deliver on the world stage."Because we've stayed in the same hotel [ahead of the Curacao game] and we've been training at Lesser Hampden as we do in normal camps, when we get to America, things will start to ramp up and feel more real."I think we've shown that in the qualifying campaign. If we get it right on the night and this group sticks together and plays the way it can, then we can definitely try to progress to places we've not been before."Saturday's friendly against Curacao saw McKenna win his 50th cap for Scotland, a special milestone he "never expected to reach".He will be hoping to add to his international appearances this summer as Scotland strive to do something they have never managed to achieve at any major finals and reach the knockout stages. It is an ambition this squad seems desperate to realise, and McKenna believes head coach Steve Clarke has played a key role in instilling that belief. After Clarke agreed to extend his contract, McKenna says "everyone in the dressing room was pleased"."I think he's been so loyal to us and everything we've achieved is largely down to him," McKenna added. "I think everyone's just absolutely buzzing that he's going to be here for a few more years."

Offseason program 'huge' for Jaguars' Caleb Ransaw after 2025 injury
Caleb Ransaw is 23 years old, but his mindset to rehabilitating a broken foot that cost him his entire Jacksonville Jaguars rookie season makes him seem much older.“It was hard,” he said of the mornings and afternoons he spent in the weight room instead of on the practice field. “But at the same time, you have to deal with it. You can’t dwell on it.”Difficult? Yes, but you deal with it. You stack good days. You stay positive. You study the scheme.Ransaw’s return-to-play road won’t officially be complete until the Sept. 13 opener against the Cleveland Browns, but last week represented a significant milestone. He wore a helmet and participated in practice for the first time since last July.A third-round safety from Tulane, Ransaw may end up competing against Antonio Johnson to start alongside Eric Murray and is definitely viewed as a future building block in the secondary. Both of which is why coach Liam Coen is calling the current offseason program “huge” for Ransaw.Huge because the Jaguars believe a healthy Ransaw can be counted on to play a role this year and huge because that can only happen by receiving a ton of snaps this spring/summer.“Having a ‘redshirt,’ (last year), he was in his playbook and he was watching tape, but it’s so hard to take a step (in development) and really feel comfortable without doing it (on the field),” Coen said. “This time is huge for Caleb to actually go through those motions, to make those calls, to see the defense work from his vantage point and how things work together.”Checked several boxes for JaguarsNever seeing Ransaw practice in pads, much less play in a game, sent me back to Tulane’s 2024 season. The Green Wave played two games against Power 4 competition (losses to Kansas State and Oklahoma) and Ransaw had five tackles in a 34-27 loss to then-No. 17 K-State. It was time to watch that game.Hooboy, if you ever want to develop a deeper appreciation for NFL coaches, scouts and personnel folks, watch Ransaw against the Wildcats. It was darn-near impossible to get much of an evaluation … and it wasn’t his fault. K-State majored in quarterback keepers, running back carries and bubble screens. A multi-layered passing circus, it was not. Ransaw wasn’t challenged.I charted Ransaw for playing all 56 defensive snaps (including one kneel-down) and assigned him a factor grade on five plays, snaps in which he made the tackle or was involved in the play. He was credited with a tackle for lost yardage for escorting the quarterback out of bounds.MORE FROM RYAN O'HALLORAN: Why Jaguars OC Grant Udinski is destined to be next young coaching starEither K-State liked working toward the short side of the field or it wanted nothing to do with Ransaw, who normally lined up on the wide side and specifically against the slot receiver. Still, the game, which K-State won 34-27, provided some clues as to why the Jaguars liked him.The Green Wave played five defensive backs regardless of K-State’s personnel so that meant in multi-tight end situations, Ransaw would often line up on the ball next to the defensive end and was willing to take on bigger blockers and stick his nose into the run-game fray. He also looked comfortable in man and zone coverage and shows good awareness. Before the draft, an NFL scout told my long-time colleague Bob McGinn: “He’s a sensational nickel. He’s got the size of an outside corner and a safety. He can play all positions but his specialty is nickel. I think he’ll go as high as the second round and no later than the third.”The Jaguars thought the same thing and drafted Ransaw in the third round.Asked earlier this offseason what stood out about Ransaw, Jaguars general manager James Gladstone said: “Quite a few things. He had the versatility to switch between nickel and safety the way in which we feel like defenses are evolving and that skillet was something we were really fond of.”Gladstone said the Jaguars were impressed with Ransaw’s tackling ability, something that showed up on a highlight tape.“He didn’t miss many tackles when he was given those opportunities or when he was putting himself in position to do that,” Gladstone said. The Jaguars’ interest continued when Ransaw was used as a safety at the Senior Bowl.“Just another box on the line of items we could check when we were looking to address that position last year,” Gladstone said. What are the realistic expectations for Ransaw?Plan A (Ransaw playing as a rookie) became Plan IR (injured reserve). For the first half of the regular season, Ransaw used a scooter to get around the locker room before he could walk with a boot on.The key for Ransaw chiseling out a regular role within the defense is eliminating the acclimation period afforded some rookie safeties.Over the last 10 seasons (2016-25), 14 safeties have been named first-team All Pro at least once. Among that group, eight were immediate starters, but four were part-time starters in their rookie seasons. For example, Baltimore’s Kyle Hamilton started four of 16 games and played 53% of the snaps and San Francisco’s Talanoa Hufanga (now with Denver) started three of 15 games and played 41% of the snaps. Can the Jaguars get Ransaw ramped up in time to start alongside Murray against Cleveland? That is obviously the objective, but they can also afford to be semi-conservative because Johnson proved to be very capable last year, tying with linebacker Devin Lloyd with a team-high five interceptions. One wrinkle that should be considered is how Tulane lined up Ransaw against Kansas State. Put him near the line of scrimmage or in coverage as the dime (sixth defender). Roll out Buster Brown, Travis Hunter and Jourdan Lewis at corner and Murray, Johnson and Ransaw at safety. The Jaguars could cloud the picture for opposing quarterbacks with how they line up.But first things first — getting Ransaw ready to play and that means getting him through training camp. Remember, if he plays in the first preseason game at New Orleans on Aug. 15, it will be his first tackling opportunity since the Senior Bowl on Feb. 1, 2025.The realistic expectations? If he earns it, get Ransaw first-team snaps in training camp and see how he can be utilized in sub-package situations. The positive for the Jaguars and Ransaw is the conversation has pivoted to what he can do as a player, not how his rehabilitation is coming along.“Rehab was a long time,” he said. “I had never been out for that long, but I’m back to 100%.”Contact O’Halloran at rohalloran@gannett.com or on X at @ryanohalloran. De Bruyne Casts Doubt About His Permanence at Napoli
De Bruyne Casts Doubt About His Permanence at NapoliKevin De Bruyne didn’t mince words toward Antonio Conte and raised doubts about staying at Napoli next season in an interview with Nieuwsblad (via Sky).“I think I played at a good level at the beginning and after returning. It was obviously difficult for me because the coach had a very different football vision from mine. I’ve never starred in my ideal role. I’ve always given my best and logged big minutes even after the injury, so it’s all good.” “As far as I’m concerned, he didn’t have to stay. I’ve learned this year that the playing style is important to me. It must be fun, and I missed that. We had discussed certain things in that respect last summer, but they didn’t come true. I still have a year left on my contract, so I’ll have to talk with the team. We were very defensive-minded. It’s not great when you score once a game while using a 5-4-1. Our top striker bagged ten goals, so the numbers aren’t great, but I think things worked out okay in terms of level and football in general.”Conte’s assistant Cristian Stellini replied to De Bruyne to Mediaset.“Maybe it doesn’t make a lot of sense for Napoli to sign a 33-year-old player who cares more about aesthetics than results. He never conveyed joy or enthusiasm.”

“No One Is Watching”: How Trump Reversed Biden’s Crackdown on Gun Trafficking
Collage by Alex Bandoni/ProPublica. Source images: Bloomberg/Getty Images, Firearm Transaction Record Form via U.S. Department of Justice and Alec MacGillis/ProPublica. Marianna Mitchem grew up in the Denver suburbs, where she played high school soccer. One day in April 1999, her team faced off against a nearby rival, Columbine High. The next day, two teenagers went on a shooting rampage at Columbine, killing more than a dozen people. The massacre left an imprint on Mitchem. After graduating from Providence College, she joined the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. “Fearing for my friends and watching what was happening — you don’t forget things like that,” she told me. “I wanted to make a difference.” She started in the ATF’s Denver office as an industry operations investigator, the bureau’s term for inspectors who ensure that firearms dealers are conducting the required background checks on buyers and maintaining sales records. When the bureau found discrepancies, it tended to settle for reprimands and improvement plans, rarely going so far as to revoke a dealer’s license. In 2021, things started to change. The country was experiencing a surge of deadly violence, with homicides up more than a third since 2019, and the administration of President Joe Biden was desperate to reverse the trend. For years, data had shown that a large share of guns used in shootings came from a small fraction of dealers, and that guns that were trafficked — sold by stores to straw purchasers (people other than the intended users) or resold on the street — were far more likely to be used in shootings. Acting on this data, the administration in June 2021 announced what became known as “zero tolerance”: Dealers found to be willfully violating the law would lose their licenses, period. Revocations spiked, from fewer than 50 in 2019, 2020 and 2021 to a record 181 in 2023. Also in 2021, Biden’s attorney general, Merrick Garland, started urging federal prosecutors to prioritize gun violence. A year later, Congress passed a law that added a firearms trafficking conspiracy charge to the federal criminal code, a crucial new tool for prosecutors. After 2021, the homicide rate started falling, which criminologists attributed to several factors, including repair of the social fabric since the coronavirus pandemic and a closing of the breach in police-community relations that followed the 2020 murder of George Floyd. One other factor got less attention: the clampdown on the illegal flow of firearms. The Biden administration struggled to broadcast its gains on public safety, and Donald Trump won election in 2024 partly by vowing to restore order. By the time Trump reentered the White House, Mitchem had risen to associate assistant director for industry operations, overseeing inspectors across the country. “We were making incredible progress on trafficking, on violent crime,” she said late last year. But the Trump administration, driven both by gun-lobby advocacy and its own political priorities, quickly set about undoing much of its predecessor’s moves to combat gun violence. It repealed the zero-tolerance policy, going so far as to invite revoked dealers to reapply for new licenses. It shifted hundreds of ATF agents to immigration work. And it scaled back on prosecutions for gun trafficking. The White House declined to comment, referring questions to the ATF and the Department of Justice. The homicide rate fell further last year, but criminologists warn against complacency, because the illicit gun trade is a classic pipeline problem: The harm can take a while to make itself felt. Research has found that the typical “time to crime” for trafficked firearms ranges up to about three years, which means that any positive lag of the anti-trafficking efforts of the Biden years would still be in effect now, with any negative effects of the Trump pullback lying in the years to come. Among those now sounding the alarm is Mitchem. Dismayed at the policy reversal, she left the ATF last spring, after 21 years, and joined Everytown, the gun-safety group founded by Michael Bloomberg. “Just because no one is watching the trafficking pipelines right now doesn’t mean guns aren’t flowing through it. It just means they’re not being intercepted,” she told me. “And as you walk away from that, and you don’t have your focus on that anymore,” she added, “that pipeline is going to be flowing, and we are going to start to see the violent crime impact from that over time.” Estimates put the number of guns in the United States at close to 400 million, but the odds that any of them will be put to ill use rise exponentially if they are obtained illegally. Of the 2.3 million firearms traced from crime scenes between 2017 and 2023, half were bought less than three years earlier and 87% were recovered in possession of someone other than the original, legally authorized buyer. Over that period, stores sold almost 1.3 million guns to traffickers that were subsequently recovered in a crime, according to an Everytown analysis of ATF statistics. This is why the laws governing gun sales carry such high stakes for public safety. But enforcement of these laws has long occupied an unusual no-man’s-land in this country, scrambling the standard political lines around criminal justice. Conservatives favoring tough-on-crime rhetoric are frequently torn when it comes to firearms trafficking: On the one hand, traffickers are helping fuel the violent crime that conservatives decry; on the other, prosecution of gun laws brushes against tenets that conservatives hold sacrosanct. It is liberals who are more likely to push for tougher enforcement, though they can be conflicted, too, as their belief in stricter gun laws runs up against a general preference for a less punitive approach to lawbreaking. Marooned in this no-man’s-land for decades now has been the agency assigned the task of enforcing federal gun laws, the ATF. Going back to an episode at Ruby Ridge, Idaho, in 1992, where an ATF investigation of illegal gun dealing led to federal agents killing the wife and son of a white separatist, the ATF has been viewed with scorn by people who otherwise might side with armed government authorities. “ATF IS GAY” read the T-shirt worn by one attendee of a big gun show I attended earlier this year in Manassas, Virginia. The agency’s radioactivity with the gun-rights lobby has left it on shaky political ground. It went seven years without a Senate-confirmed director. Its budget has not enjoyed the same expansion as that of other federal law enforcement agencies. And stringent laws constrain any ATF capabilities viewed as potentially threatening the rights of gun owners. To comply with a 1986 law preventing the creation of a federal gun registry, for example, the ATF uses software with some features disabled. Steve Dettelbach, who served as director under Biden, joked in a 2024 congressional hearing that the ATF might be “the only customer of Adobe Acrobat that pays money to remove search function.” Despite these constraints, the ATF has developed its investigative capability. In the 1990s, the agency started sharing with local law enforcement agencies its National Integrated Ballistic Information Network, which collects the unique marks on bullet casings found at shooting scenes. The system has become much more potent as it became easier to share large numbers of images from crime scenes rapidly and compare them against the NIBIN database. The work was boosted further by the creation, starting in 2016, of 25 crime gun intelligence centers to process the data. Given that a tiny share of the nation’s guns are used in shootings, with many of those used multiple times, the leads produced by the technology can have an outsized impact, said Daryl McCormick, who retired last year as special agent in charge of Ohio and southern Indiana. “It’s crazy how it might spiderweb out,” he told me, “because you have a gun that’s used in three shootings, but in one of those three shootings, there’s a guy that’s linked to three more shootings.” Starting in the spring of 2020, that technology was put to the test. As homicides rose sharply, so did sales at dealerships. By one estimate, there were 3 million more guns sold between that March and July than would have been expected. Many soon turned up in shootings; the number of guns recovered at crime scenes that had been bought from a dealership less than a year earlier, an especially strong indicator of firearms trafficking, jumped by nearly a third from 2019 to 2021. Meanwhile, many shootings involved ghost guns assembled from kits, which had begun proliferating a few years prior. Amid other factors driving the killing, the sheer plenitude of weaponry on the streets was pivotal, said Daniel Webster, a gun-violence researcher at Johns Hopkins University. “We know,” he told me, “that a small number of dealers can create a substantial amount of harm, and traffickers as well.” In the spring of 2021, a 25-year-old man was summoned to help a friend in a confrontation at a low-income housing development in Middletown, Connecticut. It was a petty beef arising from disrespectful comments made to someone’s girlfriend, but Tylon Hardy responded anyway. “He was one of the guys who wanted to protect his community,” his sister, Tianna Hardy, told me later. “He showed up to protect his friend.” After he arrived, Tylon was fatally shot in the back. A photo of Tylon Hardy in his sister’s house. He was fatally shot in Middletown, Connecticut. Jarod Lew for ProPublica Guns are tightly regulated in Connecticut, where buyers must first obtain a permit. But this gun had not been sold by a Connecticut store. It had been purchased six days earlier at Smokin’ Barrel Guns and Ammo in Raleigh, North Carolina, more than 600 miles away. It was a particularly rapid movement up the Iron Pipeline, the name for the trafficking channel from southern states with lax gun laws to northern states with stricter ones. And it turned into a clear example of why trafficking enforcement matters. Investigators obtained camera footage from the shop showing a young man emerging after buying the gun, a Taurus 9 mm pistol, to make a call on his cellphone. The following spring, the Biden-nominated U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina, Michael Easley Jr., produced indictments in the case that started with the camera: Four people were charged with having engaged in a conspiracy to traffic dozens of guns from shops in eastern and central North Carolina. All told, the ringleader had bought more than 100 guns from straw purchasers in North Carolina; 10 of the guns surfaced at crime scenes in Connecticut and New Jersey. The ringleader ended up pleading guilty and being sentenced to more than 10 years in prison; the other three received sentences ranging from 18 months to five years. Tianna Hardy’s brother, Tylon, was shot with a trafficked gun from North Carolina. Jarod Lew for ProPublica Easley kept pursuing trafficking cases, poring over spreadsheets full of NIBIN data showing information for every gun traced from shootings in his district. His office would zero in on guns with a short “time to crime” from the initial sale and see if investigators could build leads from purchase records. His team made its interest in trafficking plain to the local ATF division, motivating agents to build cases. “Prosecutors have the ability to send a demand signal to the marketplace of agents, that we have an interest in these and if you bring us the cases, we will push them over the end zone and get convictions,” he told me. Prosecutors kept getting more encouragement from Washington. In April 2022, the ATF issued a rule decreeing that ghost guns had to conform to the same regulations as regular firearms, including carrying serial numbers and requiring background checks. Two months later, Biden signed the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, which got crucial Republican backing from North Carolina Sen. Thom Tillis. In addition to the new trafficking conspiracy charge, the law included a new straw-purchasing charge, expanded background checks for buyers under 21 and funding for states with red-flag laws permitting gun confiscations from those judged dangerous. And a month after that, the Senate confirmed Dettelbach, giving the ATF its first confirmed director since 2015, one who had prosecuted gun crimes as U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Ohio. Across the country, federal prosecutors took on trafficking cases with gusto. Over the remainder of Biden’s term, they charged more than 500 defendants using the new trafficking statutes; others brought cases using laws already on the books. In Ohio, McCormick and his ATF colleagues took on a sprawling case that started with a shooting with a machine gun in Avondale, outside Cincinnati, and led to a six-year prison sentence for a 24-year-old man who had made and sold over 80 machine-gun conversion devices; two other men who trafficked the devices to Cincinnati gangs were sentenced to nine and 11 years. As in North Carolina, the Ohio agents were getting encouragement from prosecutors, including Kenneth Parker, the then-U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Ohio. “I made it clear, through my edicts, my announcements to them that we wanted those cases involving violence, that they know how seriously we were taking them,” he told me. In February, I drove to Raleigh to meet with Easley and visit Smokin’ Barrel — or what used to be Smokin’ Barrel. The shop closed after the ATF revoked its license in early 2023, not for having sold the gun in the Connecticut case, but for an earlier incident, in which the owner sold a gun to an 18-year-old woman, in violation of North Carolina’s 21-year age minimum for buying a handgun. The shop, a small outbuilding adjacent to a used car lot, now sat empty; its fading sign still stood roadside. Not far away, I found the former owner, Richard Humphries, at his home. He told me how upset he still was over the revocation, especially since, he said, he had self-reported the improper sale. When I asked him about the Taurus that ended up being used six days later in the Connecticut killing, he initially had trouble recalling it, confusing it with another case in which a man had used a gun bought at the store to kill his wife. What was it like to learn about shootings with the guns he sold? “I hate it,” he said. “I hate that I sold it and he might have used it, but there’s nothing I can, you know …” He trailed off. I pointed out that in the Connecticut case, investigators had been able to uncover the trafficking ring after tracing the gun to his shop. Was that a good use of resources? “Yeah,” he said. “I mean, they need to be able to do that. But they just, you know, they need to pay more attention to the crooks than people trying to make an honest living.” I heard similar complaints from other dealers who had their licenses revoked during Biden’s term for transgressions they insisted were mere clerical mistakes. One in Indiana told me that his violations included a mix-up involving an Amish customer’s name; one in South Carolina told me his violations included filling out forms on behalf of elderly customers with shaky handwriting. “If it had been six months earlier, they would have given us a slap on the hand,” he said. Even some within the ATF had misgivings, worrying that the policy would strain the agency’s relations with law-abiding dealers and make them less likely to offer alerts on suspicious behavior by buyers. “The industry is probably one of the best ways we get information about trafficking,” McCormick, the retired Ohio agent, told me. “But if there’s friction between us and the industry, they’re less likely to report it.” Gun-safety advocates discounted that risk, saying the policy had both shut down many lawless stores and encouraged countless other sellers to make sure they were complying with the law. “It’s not only targeting bad dealers but sending a message to the entire industry: button up,” Josh Scharff, general counsel of Brady United, told me. In 2024, revocations rose yet further, to 183. This represented a mere sliver of dealers — only 2% of those inspected that year — but it provoked new ire, not only from traditional lobby groups such as the National Shooting Sports Foundation and National Rifle Association but from ascendant groups of gun owners with even more aggressively anti-regulation stances. Some dealers challenged their revocations in federal court. In 2023, the ATF revoked the license of a shop in the Phoenix suburbs, Chambered Group, after four inspections in five years turned up a host of violations. The business sought unsuccessfully to block the revocation in court, with a federal judge, Steven Logan, finding that the business had “purposefully disregarded [federal] regulations by repeatedly violating the same regulations despite being given multiple opportunities to cure its mistakes.” In 2024, one of the shop’s co-owners tried to get a new license under a slightly different name, Chambered Custom Firearms, and the ATF blocked him, noting his past role with the revoked store. (A lawyer for the shop declined to comment.) But after Trump returned to the White House, his administration announced an end to the zero-tolerance policy, urged revoked dealers to reapply and started settling the court cases, one after another. In April 2025, the DOJ informed the court that it had started settlement talks in the Arizona case and a month later alerted it that Chambered Custom had submitted a new application “which ATF will expeditiously process.” It issued the license in July. In Oregon, a dealer had gone to federal court to challenge the ATF’s 2024 denial of his license renewal for South Valley Firearms in the town of Monroe due to his past conviction for domestic violence. Trump’s DOJ initially contested the dealer’s bid, but early this year, the department notified his attorney out of the blue that his client would be getting his license, after all. “They didn’t give any explanation as to why,” said the lawyer, Leonard Williamson. “They just said, ‘Have him resubmit his application and we’ll give it to him.’” The end of zero-tolerance was, on its own, hardly a surprise for an administration elected with the strong support of gun-rights and gun-industry groups. What has differed from the first Trump term has been the wholesale shift of resources away from the enforcement of gun trafficking laws and toward the immigration crackdown, both at the ATF and DOJ. Last spring, the administration began shifting large numbers of ATF agents to a new assignment: assisting with Immigration and Customs Enforcement actions against undocumented immigrants. ICE records obtained by the libertarian Cato Institute in September showed that nearly 1,800 of ATF’s roughly 2,500 agents had taken part in enforcement and removal operations. While ATF agents were shifted to immigration operations, criminal referrals fell. ATF referrals for common trafficking-related charges, including the two added in the 2022 law, decreased 15% in 2025 from 2024, according to a ProPublica analysis. Asked about the drop, ATF spokesperson Tanya Roman pointed at DOJ prosecutors. “Not every ATF referral is accepted by the [United States Attorney’s Office] for prosecution,” she said in a written response to questions. Eventually, the shift toward immigration enforcement reached even beyond ATF’s agents to the industry operations investigators who inspect dealers. Terrence Robinson had served in that role for six years, based in Baltimore. He took pride in the work, but soon after Trump’s second term began, Robinson realized it would be a turbulent year for his agency. As part of the push by Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency to shrink the government, the ATF offered early retirement to many of its 800-odd inspectors. In the end, some 125 took the offer, threatening to overburden a corps already struggling to inspect even a sliver of the nation’s 130,000 licensed firearms dealers. “ATF does not comment on personnel matters,” Roman said. Around the same time, Robinson went to inspect the location of an applicant for a dealership license in Baltimore. The city, long wracked by gun violence, has come to have virtually no licensed dealers within its boundaries; those that remain are mostly in the suburbs. Robinson was startled to discover that this applicant intended to sell guns from his apartment in a building downtown, a few blocks from Camden Yards. Robinson voiced his concerns to his supervisor, who told him that he had to approve it. “According to our rules and regulations now, he passed a criminal background check, and he’s a citizen, so …,” Robinson said. “It’s mind-boggling.” Most upsetting, though, was the directive that he and other industry operations investigators received in late summer to start spending at least six hours per week on immigration-related work. It was hard to understand what this even meant — their job was to inspect firearms dealers. To comply, he began scouring dealers’ sales records looking for buyers with foreign-sounding names, which were then relayed to the Department of Homeland Security. This struck him as a monumental misuse of resources. This was what pushed him over the edge and made him decide to take early retirement, too, in September. “I didn’t sign up to be an immigration person,” he said. “I’m just not that.” Asked about such orders, the ATF’s Roman said: “In support of President Trump’s whole of government approach to combat illegal immigration, ATF is assisting the Department of Homeland Security and other federal law enforcement partners with their immigration enforcement efforts. To ensure operational security and the safety of our agents and partners, ATF does not disclose details or specific numbers of personnel deployments or enforcement activities.” Now that Robinson was gone, his former team was down from 10 to six, with a temporary supervisor. He worried what the changes at ATF meant for public safety. “I’m not saying I can see the future, but I don’t see things getting better,” he said. “I see things getting worse.” Terrence Robinson served as an inspector at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives for six years in Baltimore. The directive that he and other industry operations investigators received in late summer was to start spending at least six hours per week on immigration-related work. This was what pushed him over the edge and made him decide to take early retirement. “I didn’t sign up to be an immigration person,” he said. “I’m just not that.” KT Kanazawich for ProPublica “Everyone’s been in a little bit of shock about what’s going on,” Marianna Mitchem said last December, speaking from the stage of a conference on gun violence at the Center for American Progress, the center-left think tank in Washington. She described what the ATF had accomplished in recent years, then she laid bare the extent of the pullback now underway. Mitchem told the advocates that they would have to look to officials in their home states and cities to try to fill the void left by the Trump administration. “It’s up to the states to start tackling this trafficking problem, because unfortunately, you’re not going to have the support of the ATF,” she said. This has already started happening in a few places. In the suburbs of Philadelphia, a city that suffered one of the worst pandemic-era homicide spikes but has since experienced dramatic improvement, county sheriffs have started doing more inspections of dealers to make up for the decline in ATF enforcement. A member of the conference audience asked Mitchem what else states could be doing to respond. Her answer suggested she wasn’t sure. “ATF wasn’t always the most widely known agency. I think we sort of liked it that way. We did really, really good work and kept our head down,” she said. “And so now, you’re trying to let everybody know, unfortunately, there are still good people there, but they’ve been redirected.” In February, Trump’s nominee to lead the agency, Robert Cekada, downplayed that redirection at his confirmation hearing. Cekada is a 20-year ATF veteran, a fact in which gun-safety advocates have tried to take some reassurance. Cekada testified that the agency was continuing to “do dealer inspections uninhibited.” But ATF has made it much harder for researchers and the public to track that work. It took the administration more than 15 months to release a tally of how many dealer licenses it had revoked: 56 in 2025, down 69% from the year before. Cekada also challenged a report last fall that 80% of the ATF’s agents had been reassigned to immigration enforcement. The reassignment had never amounted to more than 100 agents at a given time, Cekada said. “ATF in those operations has been focused on offenders that were illegally armed with firearms,” he told senators. But as the former federal prosecutors and ATF agents I spoke with noted, the key question when it comes to the fight against trafficking is whether prosecutors are seeking out cases. After all, the ATF investigates cases, but U.S. attorneys prosecute them. And here the evidence suggests a pullback. A ProPublica analysis shows that in the first year of the Trump administration, the DOJ declined 30% more referrals from the ATF for the main trafficking-related charges than it had the year prior. Despite the high rate of declinations for ATF referrals, the DOJ last year ended up prosecuting nearly as many gun-trafficking cases from all sources as it had in 2024. But a growing share of the cases, roughly 30%, were under the new trafficking conspiracy charges included in the 2022 law, which since its inception has proven especially useful in cases involving gun trafficking across the Mexican border: About a fifth of all people charged under that law over the course of 2024 and 2025 are in a single district, western Texas. Asked about the rise in declinations of ATF referrals and the shift toward border-related cases, DOJ spokesperson Katie Kenlein said, “The department declines to comment on prosecutorial strategy.” Webster, the Johns Hopkins researcher, said numbers leave little doubt as to the shift away from general anti-trafficking enforcement. “Everything is diverted,” he said. “It’s all about immigrants.” On April 29, right after being confirmed as ATF director, Cekada announced 34 proposed rule changes, including requiring dealers to hold records for only 20 or 30 years, not indefinitely, and limiting ATF scrutiny of the state-issued permits that can replace background checks for buyers. “We are proposing to remove unnecessary hurdles that were standing in the way of law-abiding citizens and businesses,” he said, flanked by leaders of the NRA and National Shooting Sports Foundation. One crucial Biden-era reform has persisted: the clampdown on ghost guns. The 2022 ATF regulation survived a Supreme Court challenge last year, and lawsuits by several cities helped drive the leading producer of ghost guns out of business. Webster and other criminologists note that the reduced flow of ghost guns correlates with a sharply lower rate of shootings by teenagers, who had been heavy users of the guns during the 2020-21 homicide surge. Even that progress seemed as if it might be at risk. In early April, a joint status report issued to the federal court in Texas where the case originated stated that “ATF has advised that it plans to take agency action to amend the challenged rule” (even though the rule has been upheld by the Supreme Court). A day later, the White House’s 2027 budget called for reversing “the imposition of excessive restrictions on homemade firearms.” But five days after that, the DOJ notified the court in the Texas case that “the government has decided to maintain the definition” that underlies the ghost gun rule. Asked for clarification, the ATF’s Roman said last week: “ATF is still conducting legal reviews for other, more technically challenging rules. If changes are needed following the review, a proposal will be published.” For now, one key valve in the pipeline remains closed. Phillies hope Trea Turner can get going as the calendar shifts to June
Phillies hope Trea Turner can get going as the calendar shifts to June originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Philadelphia Phillies have received little production from shortstop Trea Turner this season, and he does not look like the National League Batting champion he was last year (.304 batting average). Through 58 games, Turner is batting a career-worst .223, which is his lowest batting average since his rookie season when he hit .225 in 27 games, and is posting an OPS+ of 71. In his last 15 games, Turner has been ice cold, batting .194 with a .242 on-base percentage and striking out 16 times in 62 at-bats. Turner's poor start to the season caused interim manager Don Mattingly to remove the three-time All-Star from the leadoff spot and move him to the two hole. Batting second hasn't helped Turner get himself back on track, as he has collected six hits, a double, two home runs, and struck out five times in 25 at-bats. With the calendar turning to June and the Phillies only a game over .500 (30-29), Turner needs to start getting himself going for the Phillies to get hot. The Philadelphia Phillies hope Trea Turner can start getting himself going as the calendar shifts to June Over a third of the way through the Major League Baseball season, June is a time when hitters and teams show you whether they can turn things around or not. Already having 238 at-bats (256 plate appearances) under his belt, June will show whether or not Turner will remain a .220 hitter or get back to hitting between .280 and .300. More MLB News:Phillies' No. 2 prospect continues to shine at Double-A"The Phillies could really use a few guys heating up throughout the lineup, but it all starts with Turner," wrote MLB.com's Todd Zolecki. "They recently dropped him out of the leadoff spot in the hopes it could provide a spark -- and he responded with a homer in back-to-back games. That’s a start, but he’s still a long ways away from being the player he was last year when he won the NL batting title. This Phillies offense is at its best when he’s hitting leadoff and getting on base ahead of MLB home run leader Kyle Schwarber."With no other options to play at shortstop other than Edmundo Sosa, who is preoccupied with learning to play left field, the Phillies need to continue to roll with Turner. ‘They are family members’: Rajat Patidar dedicates RCB’s IPL 2026 title to stampede victims
Royal Challengers Bengaluru capped off a dominant season by defeating Gujarat Titans by five wickets in the IPL 2026 final to secure their second consecutive title. Amid the celebrations, captain Rajat Patidar took a moment to remember the fans who lost their lives in the tragic stampede that followed RCB's maiden IPL triumph last year. The hastily organised victory celebrations in June 2025 had resulted in a stampede outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, claiming the lives of 11 supporters. Reflecting on the tragedy, Patidar said in the post-match press conference, "Obviously, you feel bad. You lost your fans after winning the game. Not just the fans, they are family members. I always wanted to dedicate this trophy to them. That's it. I don't have words to express that feeling."As a tribute to the departed souls, RCB players wore jersey No. 11 throughout the season, while the franchise, in association with the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), permanently reserved 11 seats at the stadium in memory of the victims. Patidar's heartfelt dedication added an emotional touch to RCB's historic title defence, ensuring that the memories of the fans remain an integral part of the franchise's journey.Coming to the final, Defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru continued their dominance and clinched back-to-back IPL titles after defeating Gujarat Titans by 5 wickets in the IPL 2026 Final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.GT posted 155/8 in their 20 overs, but RCB's disciplined bowling attack kept the dangerous batting lineup in check. Despite a few late boundaries, Gujarat never managed to build substantial partnerships and finished with a below-par total. 131437031In reply, RCB chased down the target comfortably, reaching 161/5 in just 18 overs. Virat Kohli led the charge with a brilliant unbeaten 75 off 42 balls, anchoring the innings and ensuring there were no late hiccups. His knock proved decisive as RCB crossed the finish line with two overs to spare and sealed their second consecutive IPL crown.

French Open slaps Vallejo with a 65,000-euro fine over sexist umpire remarks
PARIS (AP) — Adolfo Daniel Vallejo was fined half his French Open prize money after he said his second-round match should not have been umpired by a woman, the tournament director announced on Monday.Vallejo lost to French teenager Moise Kouame last week after a tense five-set battle that lasted nearly five hours. He later told the tennis website Clay that "this sort of match needs to be umpired by a man.”Following his 6-3, 7-5, 3-6, 2-6, 7-6 (8) loss, Vallejo added: “It’s very difficult for a woman to do it.”Roland Garros director Amelie Mauresmo told reporters at the French Open that a 65,000 euros ($76,000) fine was handed down to the player, “representing roughly half of his prize money.”“This is clearly unacceptable,” Mauresmo said. “Once again, such remarks have no place here.”Players reaching the second round at the French Open receive 130,000 euros.Vallejo, from Paraguay, said the umpire, Ana Carvalho from Brazil, did not control the spectators.“It has to be refereed by a man, because it’s a very demanding crowd and you need a lot of strength to go against the crowd,” he said. “The crowd was very out of line, but I understand they’re supporting their compatriot. It’s quite an intense crowd and that’s why I was prepared; I already knew it would be like that and, to be honest, it didn’t harm me, but rather strengthened him.”Vallejo added that Kouame “took up a lot of time on many occasions, lying on the floor or stalling.”“And it’s not normal for the crowd to be shouting for a full minute without any play. In a match where the physical aspect matters so much, if you give a player a lot of time he’s obviously going to take advantage of it. The truth is it’s also difficult for a referee to manage this situation.”___AP tennis: https://apnews.com/hub/tennis

Alexandre Dujeux and Didier Digard candidates for OGC Nice job
Alexandre Dujeux and Didier Digard candidates for OGC Nice jobClaude Puel, in extremis, kept OGC Nice in Ligue 1 thanks to Friday night’s 4-1 win over AS Saint-Étienne. However, it is not expected that succeeding in his mission will get him the job on a permanent basis. Puel succeeded Franck Haise back in December and presided over a protracted slide down the table, although he did get the club to the final of the Coupe de France. He was hired by returning co-presidents Jean-Pierre Rivere and Maurice Cohen. The former has confirmed his exit, the latter may too leave, although that depends on the situation regarding the club’s new buyers. An unnamed American consortium are in advanced talks, as per Nice-Matin.Puel’s deal only ran until the end of the season and it is not expected to be extended. Two names have emerged as the club looks to appoint a new manager: Alexandre Dujeux and Didier Digard. The former has excelled at SCO Angers and Nice-Matin understands that he is the frontrunner. L’Équipe understands that Digard, who has previously had a stint as manager of the academy and who also had an interim spell, too, prior to Francesco Farioli’s arrival, is also in the running. He has succeeded in keeping Le Havre AC in the top flight on a shoestring budget.GFFN | Luke Entwistle

Liverpool legend has already endorsed rumoured incoming coach
Liverpool legend has already endorsed rumoured incoming coachSteven Gerrard Backs Iraola as Liverpool Weigh Managerial FutureLiverpool’s search for direction has taken another intriguing turn, with Andoni Iraola emerging as one of the leading candidates to take charge following the departure of Arne Slot. As speculation gathers pace around the managerial vacancy, one of the club’s most influential modern figures has offered a strong endorsement of the Bournemouth boss.Reports from the original source, the Daily Star, suggest Iraola is firmly in the frame for the role and could look to bring trusted members of his coaching staff with him should he make the move to Merseyside. It is a development that has fuelled debate among supporters and pundits alike as Liverpool prepare for a significant decision.Gerrard Offers Strong Endorsement of IraolaFew opinions carry more weight among Liverpool supporters than that of Steven Gerrard. The former captain believes Iraola possesses the qualities required to succeed at one of the biggest clubs in world football.Speaking about the Spaniard’s credentials, Gerrard said: “I think he’s done a fabulous job at Bournemouth.“I think his style would suit Liverpool. But let’s not beat around the bush.“Liverpool Football Club is an attractive job for a lot of elite managers around the world.“So I don’t think he’ll be the only name on the table. But because of the link to Bournemouth and the guys that have come from Bournemouth to Liverpool in terms of board level, they will know him very well.”Those comments neatly capture the current mood surrounding the search. Iraola is clearly admired, yet Liverpool’s stature means a range of high-profile candidates are likely to be considered before a final decision is reached.Bournemouth Success Raises Iraola’s ReputationIraola’s stock has risen considerably during his time at Bournemouth. His energetic approach, tactical flexibility and commitment to front-foot football have transformed perceptions of the south coast club. The Spaniard has earned praise for creating a side capable of competing aggressively against Premier League heavyweights while maintaining a clear footballing identity. His teams press intensely, move the ball quickly and show a willingness to attack regardless of the opposition. Those qualities naturally appeal to Liverpool supporters accustomed to proactive football. The club’s recent success has been built on intensity, organisation and ambition, attributes that are also evident in Iraola’s work. What strengthens his candidacy further is the existing relationship between Liverpool’s hierarchy and Bournemouth. Familiarity can often play a decisive role during major appointments, particularly when club executives have already witnessed a manager’s methods and personality at close quarters.Coaching Team Questions Could Influence DecisionOne notable detail emerging from the latest reports concerns Bournemouth assistant manager Tommy Elphick. The coach recently turned down the opportunity to become Bristol City manager and is reportedly considering his next move carefully.According to the Daily Star’s reporting, Bournemouth are keen for Elphick to remain at the club under incoming boss Marco Rose. However, if Iraola secures the Liverpool position, there is a possibility he would seek to bring Elphick with him.Such decisions are often overlooked during managerial changes, yet coaching appointments can prove crucial. Successful managers frequently rely on trusted lieutenants who understand their methods and help maintain standards behind the scenes. The prospect of Liverpool appointing Iraola therefore extends beyond the head coach alone. Any move could also reshape the club’s wider coaching structure.Liverpool Facing Crucial Summer ChoiceFor Liverpool, this appointment represents far more than replacing one manager with another. It is about defining the next chapter of the club’s development.Iraola offers an appealing blend of Premier League experience, modern tactical thinking and upward momentum. Gerrard’s backing only adds further credibility to his growing reputation.Yet the Liverpool job remains one of football’s most coveted positions. As Gerrard himself acknowledged, elite managers from across the game will view the vacancy as an attractive opportunity. That reality means Liverpool are unlikely to rush their decision. The club’s leadership will examine every option before settling on the individual they believe can lead the next era.For now, Iraola remains a prominent contender, Gerrard remains convinced of his suitability, and the football world waits to discover who will ultimately be handed one of the sport’s most demanding and prestigious roles.

Manchester United set to complete £35m midfielder deal
Manchester United set to complete £35m midfielder dealManchester United Move Closer to Ederson Deal as Carrick Shapes New EraManchester United’s midfield rebuild appears to be gathering momentum, with TalkSport reporting that the club are closing in on a deal for Atalanta midfielder Ederson. The Brazilian has been firmly on United’s radar since 2024 and, according to the report, negotiations have reached an advanced stage. There is growing confidence on all sides that an agreement can be finalised, with United aiming to secure the transfer for around £35 million rather than the higher figures suggested elsewhere.Photo: IMAGOWith Michael Carrick now firmly established as Manchester United’s permanent head coach, this potential signing could offer an early indication of the type of squad he wants to build.Midfield Refresh Takes PriorityUnited’s need for reinforcements in central midfield has been evident for some time, particularly with Casemiro expected to leave Old Trafford this summer.Photo: IMAGOEderson fits the profile of a player entering his prime years. At 26, he combines physical presence, energy and tactical intelligence, qualities that have helped him become a key figure for Atalanta over the past few seasons. His record of 180 appearances for the Italian club highlights both consistency and durability, while his contribution to Atalanta’s Europa League triumph during the 2023/24 campaign underlines his experience at a high level.Photo IMAGOAtalanta Exit Appears Increasingly LikelyOne of the strongest indicators that a move could be approaching came from Atalanta head coach Raffaele Palladino.“It was a choice agreed with the player because there is something happening on the transfer market.”“The fact that a player like him is being followed by such an important club should be a source of pride.”Those comments hardly sound like the words of a manager expecting to retain a player for much longer. With only one year remaining on his current contract, Atalanta may recognise that this summer represents their best opportunity to secure a significant transfer fee.Carrick Begins Long Term ProjectThe report notes that Ederson could become the first signing completed since Carrick was appointed on a permanent basis following Ruben Amorim’s departure. His return to Old Trafford in January helped spark a remarkable turnaround. A third place Premier League finish and qualification for the Champions League have provided renewed optimism around the club.Photo IMAGORecruitment now becomes the next major test. United have also been linked with Elliot Anderson, Carlos Baleba and Adam Wharton, but Ederson appears to be the most advanced pursuit. If the deal is completed near the reported £35 million valuation, it could prove to be smart business in a market where proven midfielders often command considerably higher fees.As reported by TalkSport, Manchester United’s patience in negotiations may soon be rewarded with a signing capable of becoming a cornerstone of Carrick’s evolving side. Our View – EPL Index AnalysisEderson may not arrive with the profile of a global superstar, but that can often be an advantage. United have spent years chasing marquee names when the squad has frequently needed players with hunger, reliability and room for growth. The reported fee is equally encouraging. In an era when Premier League clubs routinely demand £80 million or more for midfield talent, securing an experienced international performer for around £35 million would represent excellent value. There is also a clear football logic behind the move. Casemiro’s departure leaves a significant gap in midfield, and Ederson appears capable of bringing athleticism and balance to the centre of the pitch.Supporters will also be encouraged by Carrick’s involvement. His playing career was built on understanding midfield dynamics, positioning and control. If this is one of his first major signings, fans will trust that the manager sees qualities that fit his long term vision.Nothing is complete yet, but this feels like a sensible move rather than a glamorous one. For many United supporters, that is exactly the kind of recruitment strategy they have been waiting to see.

Barcelona Star Raphinha Hailed ‘Best In The World’ By Real Madrid Legend Ancelotti
Brazil boss and Real Madrid legend Carlo Ancelotti hailed Barcelona star Raphinha as "the best in the world at attacking deep" after he he helped his country thrash Panama 6-2 at the Maracana on Sunday.AFP via Getty ImagesBrazil boss and Real Madrid legend Carlo Ancelotti hailed Barcelona star Raphinha as "the best in the world at attacking deep" after he helped his country thrash Panama 6-2 at the Maracana on Sunday. The Italian has been on the receiving end of the Blaugrana number 11’s brilliance at the Bernabeu, and especially in a Ballon d’Or contending 2024/2025 campaign where he destroyed Los Blancos in the Spanish Super Cup final as part of a domestic treble sweep by Hansi Flick’s men.Madrid finished that season as the first of two that have been trophyless. Luckily for Ancelotti, though, he now gets to oversee Raphinha at international level. At the upcoming World Cup, the 29-year-old is set to be key for the five-time winners alongside Madrid ace Vinicius Jr and perhaps an aging, injury-niggled Neymar whose involvement is touch and go.Neymar watched from the stands at the Maracana, as Vincius’ screamer of an opening goal kicked off the scoring in a 6-2 win.Reacting to it, Ancelotti stated that Raphinha, who had 80% passing accuracy in the opposition half and was brought off for Endrick at half time, is “the best in the world at attacking deep”.Does Raphinha have specific orders from Ancelotti?Ancelotti explained that what he asks of Raphinha is “to stay close to the defensive line”.“I think being close to the defensive line to attack from the back is more important, but I’m never going to tell Raphinha where he has to play when we have the ball,” Ancelotti answered, when asked if Barcelona’s 2022 signing from Leeds United could be used as a striker.Against Panama, Raphinha was deployed as a central number 10 which is intersting considering where Neymar might fit yet also from a Barça perspective. On Friday, the Catalans signed Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United for a $93 million fee with add-ons meaning Raphinha now has permanent competition for the left wing spot other than loanee Marcus Rashford - who might return to Manchester United on June 30. Raphinha has been deployed by Flick centrally on rare occasions, though, and this would put him in a battle against Dani Olmo and Fermin Lopez for the CAM spot. This article was originally published on Forbes.com

Don’t underestimate young athletes — the NAACP boycott plan could actually work
In response to the recent assault on Black voting rights in the Deep South, the NAACP has called for athletes, fans and alums to boycott public flagship universities in eight states. After a Supreme Court decision that weakened the Voting Rights Act, lawmakers in many of these states rushed to carve up majority-Black districts that had previously been protected, leading to the NAACP’s bold request. It’s the equivalent of sending an all-out blitz against Peyton Manning in his prime — highly aspirational, with the strong likelihood that it won’t end well. The NAACP is on the right track, but it’s doing too much. Targeting one flagship school in one state whose lawmakers have diluted Black representation — and crafting a compelling narrative about the injustice — would be a far more manageable quest. And convincing some accomplished performers to transfer, and some high-profile recruits to decommit, could spark seismic change.“I believe that sending a message is where this needs to start,” said Dr. Harry Edwards, a legendary Civil Rights activist and educator.I agree. Ideally for the boycotters, the resulting panic would compel a university and its supporters to pressure state lawmakers to create a more equitable voting map and implement other measures designed to prevent racial imbalance. And in the states in question, those pressure points would be pretty raw.“I’d pick Tennessee,” said author Lawrence Ross, who has given lectures on campus racism (based on his book, “Blackballed”) at colleges across the country. Tennessee’s state legislature earlier this month eliminated its lone majority-Black House district, and subsequently stripped committee assignments from some Democratic lawmakers. The University of Tennessee, Ross reasons, is the “only Power Four school in the state (besides Vanderbilt). They are desperate for the (College Football Playoff). They need Black players from out of state. And they have an irrational fan base.“And if someone made it so they were more (like) Arkansas than Alabama, they’d give more districts to Black folks.”It’s natural to be skeptical of such a proclamation, or to question whether the burden being placed on young athletes is unduly severe. There are so many reasons why critics rail against this idea, though many of those critics happen to have an attachment to the schools that could be negatively impacted.Yet if scaled strategically and messaged effectively, this could absolutely work. Athletes leveraging their power for social justice is a time-tested concept, and the world of big-time college sports is already geared toward persuading teenagers and their parents that certain environments aren’t right for them.Negative recruiting is an established reality. LSU football coach Lane Kiffin, in a recent interview with Vanity Fair, provided a template that could apply here, claiming that in his former job (at Ole Miss), he had trouble convincing Black athletes to come to Oxford, Miss., because of the school’s connection to racism and slavery. If you don’t think the recent rush by lawmakers in many of these states to redistrict will be cited by coaches who recruit against the flagship schools in those states (including LSU) as evidence that Black students are unwelcome — well, bless your innocent heart. There’s also an economic issue, given that many of the schools in question (mostly in the SEC, along with Clemson and Florida State from the ACC) tend to pay top dollar in the NIL era. The NAACP’s call for Black athletes to consider playing at HBCUs as an alternative feels unrealistic; those schools’ athletic programs, at this point, don’t offer comparable economic, competitive or developmental opportunities. Not every elite recruit is the same, but almost all of them want certain things: playing time, high-level coaching and a path to make it to the pros. And, obviously, The Bag.Some of those who are down with the NAACP’s cause, such as former NFL All-Pro running back Maurice Jones-Drew, can’t assess it without seeing green.“I think it’s a great plan,” said Jones-Drew, whose son recently committed to UCLA for football. “If it was Maurice at 41, I would (honor) it. But most people, they’re going to take the most money they can get. And how can you tell a kid that he can’t change his family’s economic trajectory and lifestyle with a signed check?”Yet Jones-Drew concedes that his son, Duece — a high school junior who, like his father, is an undersized running back — considered political and societal factors before announcing his intention to play for his father’s alma mater. And I reject the widespread notion that young people can’t or won’t be bothered to lead the charge for change. That’s what happened during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s, with Edwards one of many prominent examples. Edwards, now 83 and in his fifth decade as a San Francisco 49ers staff consultant, was the brainchild behind the black-gloved-fist protest at the 1968 Summer Olympics by American sprinters Tommie Smith and John Carlos. In February of that year, Edwards, then 25, organized a boycott of the New York Athletic Club Indoor Track and Field Classic, protesting the club’s discriminatory membership practices, which flexed the emerging power of Black athletes during a turbulent time.He was hardly alone. John Lewis was 25 when he led the iconic protest across the Edmund Pettis Bridge in Selma, Ala. Many of the Freedom Riders were in their teens and early 20s. Claudette Colvin was 15 when she refused to give up her seat to a white passenger on a segregated bus in Montgomery, Ala., in 1955, nine months before Rosa Parks’ famous arrest.“There were 9-year-olds put in jail,” Ross said. “It’s why I keep telling people to stop underestimating young folks. The other thing is this: Grown Black men, particularly those in sports, get castigated for not having a point of view. If you don’t want grown, professional sports-playing Black men to be only about their narcissistic selves, then you can’t create a special class (of athletes) when they’re young.”Similarly, I don’t buy the argument that the most coveted athletes — the ones whose defection from a targeted school would provoke the most drama and attention — would be leaving massive amounts of cash on the table by playing elsewhere. The NIL era has already altered the competitive landscape. Not only are schools like Ohio State and Oregon shelling out huge money for players, but traditionally lower-achieving football programs such as Indiana and Texas Tech have suddenly become big spenders. The Hoosiers’ football budget increased from less than $24 million in 2021 to $61 million in 2025, when Indiana went undefeated and won the school’s first national championship.Presumably, other schools will try to follow Indiana’s model, given the obvious economic and branding payoffs. For example, in the wake of a breakout 2024 season, the Hoosiers struck a $50 million stadium naming rights deal. With players enjoying more options than ever before, via the transfer portal and schools openly bidding for their services, some of the football programs being targeted by the NAACP boycott already seem more vulnerable to a shift in the balance of power than they did a few years ago.“Those teams are on the downward trajectory anyways,” Jones-Drew says. “The Big Ten is the best conference.”Given this backdrop, in a situation in which a Black athlete’s options are financially comparable — or at least in the same ballpark — could taking a stand against institutional racism be the deciding factor? For starters, the NAACP and others need to sharpen the plan of attack and make a compelling case. Nearly 60 years ago, Edwards told us, “Activism divorced from thorough strategic analyses and planning is conducive to nothing so much as contradiction, chaos, and ultimately failure.” In this case, he’s aligned with the NAACP’s mission but is comfortable “pulling their coattails on the complexities of their proposed effort,” the lack of affiliation with a broader societal movement and the fact that athletes haven’t been heard from yet.Oh, and one other thing: “Women, too, must be included. Not to include an equal appeal to Black women athletes is effectively to devalue and denigrate their sports and they themselves as athletes.”My suggestion? If targeting a specific school, or a handful of schools, prioritize athletes in the revenue sports (football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball) to make a larger point.Edwards has spotlighted the importance women played in the Civil Rights Movement and as progressive forces in the sports world, with examples dating back to track star Rose Robinson, who protested racial segregation during the 1959 Pan American Games, and sprinting champion Wilma Rudolph, who refused to participate in racially segregated parades and dinners celebrating her three gold medals at the 1960 Rome Olympics. In 2020, as Edwards notes, members of the WNBA’s Atlanta Dream mobilized to protest one of their owners’ derisive comments about the Black Lives Matter movement, an effort that ultimately helped swing two U.S. Senate elections in Georgia.During that significant stretch, the ability of athletes to effect change was obvious and awe-inspiring. Can that happen again now, as some states rush to a redistricting that evokes the ignominious Jim Crow era?“It’s on my generation to educate our children about what’s going on, because history repeats itself,” Jones-Drew said. “You have to give them as much information as possible. Because in school, they’re not talking about it. I’m a history major, so I get it. History repeats itself; I studied it, and I lived it.“My son is abreast of things. He’s into politics. He understands that part. But he also knows who he is. He wants to play in a place where he can grow the most that he can grow — as a player and as a man. We’re Californians, but he lived in Jacksonville (when Jones-Drew starred for the Jaguars), so he’s seen the other side before. In the end, he felt most comfortable in L.A. That, to me, is what matters most.”Protest, of course, is often uncomfortable. Jones-Drew understands the price paid by athlete-activists like Smith and Carlos, who were suspended from the U.S. Olympic Team, banned from the Olympic Village and sent home early — and subjected to widespread enmity and scorn. If their modern-day counterparts decide to stand up now, or in the future, it won’t simply be because of a blanket NAACP decree.“I agree that if you want to change things you have to make certain (sacrifices), but it’s hard for me to ask people to take less for the greater good,” Jones-Drew says. “For this to work, a team will have to lose like 10 guys in a recruiting class — and the kids will have to say that they left because of (voting rights).“You have to find special people who it resonates with, and who are willing to deal with the consequences.”Any volunteers — and prospective Volunteers (among others) — will have to weigh those priorities in the months and years ahead. This article originally appeared in The Athletic.College Football, Men's College Basketball, Women's College Basketball2026 The Athletic Media Company

Malaysia enforces ban on social media accounts for children younger than 16
FILE - Two Malay girls check a mobile phone at a fabric installation decoration at Kwai Chai Hong, the Chinatown area in downtown Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Tuesday, March 30, 2021. (AP Photo/Vincent Thian, File)2026-06-01T02:16:51Z KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Malaysia on Monday began enforcing rules barring millions of children younger than 16 from having social media accounts, joining a global effort to tighten online safety protections for young users. The rules require social media platforms with at least 8 million users including Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, to implement age-verification systems and block users under 16 from creating accounts.Malaysia’s Communications and Multimedia Commission said Monday that age verification for existing users will be rolled out progressively over the next six months.Users identified as under 16 will have a month to download or transfer their data, including photos and videos, before any restrictions, suspensions, or other actions are applied, it said in a statement.Companies that fail to comply could face penalties of up to 10 million ringgit ($2.5 million). But parents whose children manage to bypass the law will not be penalized. The government said the measures are aimed at protecting children from harmful content, cyberbullying and platform features designed to encourage excessive use. Other countries including Australia,Brazil and Indonesia have introduced or announced age-based restrictions or requirements for children’s access to social media. Countries including Britain, France, Spain, Denmark, Thailand and South Korea are also studying or developing similar approaches. Read More The regulator said the rules are not intended to prevent children from accessing digital technology.“These measures help strengthen the protection of children in the online environment, while providing added reassurance to parents in navigating increasingly complex digital risks,” it has said.Platforms are required to improve user safety, discourage excessive use and take action against underage accounts and harmful content. Technology companies have yet to detail how they will comply with Malaysia’s new requirements.Clara Koh, Meta’s director of public policy for Southeast Asia, had cautioned in April that Malaysia’s blanket under-16 ban could backfire by driving teenagers away from protected apps and into unregulated corners of the internet. She said Meta has launched “teen accounts” for those under 18 that limits contact, screen time and exposure to inappropriate content.Malaysia’s curbs come as governments face growing pressure to address concerns about social media’s impact on children’s mental health and online safety. In March, a U.S. jury ordered Meta and YouTube to pay millions of dollars in damages in a case alleging that platform design features contributed to harm suffered by a young user. How two Malaysian families see the changesKuala Lumpur parents Saravanan Ganasan and Jayaradha Veerasamy — whose children are 12 and 15 — approve of the changes. They already banned their kids from using social media, believing minors lack the psychological capacity to cope with it.The couple ban unsupervised scrolling on TikTok and Instagram. Devices are kept out of bedrooms, screen time is limited to common areas, and their son is not allowed to lock his phone with a password.“Exposure is what we fear,” Saravanan said. “The wrong kind of exposure will do damage to the mind.”Aadhavan Saravanan, 15, said he believes he would be addicted to social media if allowed full freedom. “Social media is like, a luxury and it’s not a necessity,” he saidThe couple said the restrictions have forced their children to develop offline life skills. Instead of scrolling, Aadhavan reads books in a backyard mango tree and repairs broken household appliances, while their daughter cooks and does crafts.“A lot of parents are very scared that children get bored,” the kids’ mother, Jayaradha, said. “But boredom is actually very good because they start thinking out of the box.”But Shaun Hew, who lives in the Kuala Lumpur suburb of Cheras, feels the new restrictions go too far. Hew believes social media offers an outlet for his kids to spend time productively, as long as there is proper adult oversight. His 11-year-old son uses platforms to learn cooking and his daughter, 14, uses YouTube for exam revision. He worries a sudden cutoff could cause teenagers to rebel and find unregulated ways to bypass internet blocks. Some voice concerns over privacy and safetySome critics contend that Malaysia’s move could increase the risks of data privacy breaches and expand state surveillance.“It is very much following the trend but in a way that is raising alarms due to requiring a government ID for age verification,” said Benjamin Loh, social science lecturer at Monash University in Malaysia.Loh also said experiences elsewhere suggest age-based restrictions have yet to prove consistently effective. Without penalties on parents, families can easily bypass the law by creating accounts for their children, he said.“This is a major gap that unless regulators are willing to fix, will result in the law having little effect in stopping children from using social media,” he added. 获取更多RSS:https://feedx.net https://feedx.site

(AP Photo/Vincent Thian, File)2026-06-01T08:51:54Z NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — Hundreds of youths in Kenya’s central town of Nanyuki on Monday demonstrated against the establishment at the Laikipia Air Base of an Ebola quarantine center for American citizens exposed to the virus. The protests come two days after Kenya’s High Court suspended the establishment of the facility and the arrival of any foreign patients pending the hearing of a case filed by the Law Society of Kenya and a constitutional watchdog. The two organizations cited Kenya’s fragile health system as the reason why foreign Ebola patients should not be quarantined in the country.U.S. officials said Thursday that the United States was planning to send Americans exposed to Ebola while abroad to a new facility in Kenya instead of flying them home. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the administration’s plans. They said the facility would be at Laikipia Air Base and would be operational with 50 quarantine beds by Friday. On Monday, hundreds of youths marched to the gates of the air base, chanting anti-Ebola slogans.Health Minister Aden Duale on Sunday said the quarantine center was for “everyone” and not exclusively for U.S. nationals. The U.S. government intends to commit $13.5 million toward Kenya’s Ebola preparedness efforts, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a statement. 获取更多RSS:https://feedx.net https://feedx.site

Macron says French Navy, backed by the UK, intercepted a sanctioned tanker from Russia
FILE - Two Malay girls check a mobile phone at a fabric installation decoration at Kwai Chai Hong, the Chinatown area in downtown Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Tuesday, March 30, 2021. (AP Photo/Vincent Thian, File)2026-06-01T08:19:03Z PARIS (AP) — The French Navy, with support from the United Kingdom, has intercepted an oil tanker under international sanctions that was traveling from Russia, the most recent effort by nations that support Ukraine to target Russian oil exports helping to finance President Vladimir Putin’s war.French President Emmanuel Macron announced the interception in a post Monday on X, saying the Tagor was boarded on Sunday in the Atlantic. The post included a video showing a person rappelling from a helicopter onto a ship. It is the latest in a series of French naval interceptions of tankers suspected of links to Russia. “It is unacceptable that boats skirt international sanctions, violate the law of the sea and finance the war that Russia has been waging for more than 4 years against Ukraine,” Macron wrote. “These ships, that don’t respect the most elementary rules of maritime navigation, are also a threat to the environment and everyone’s security.” Oil revenue is a key part of Russia’s economy, allowing Putin to pour money into the war effort against Ukraine without worsening inflation for everyday people and avoiding a currency collapse. Russia is believed to be using a fleet of hundreds of ships to evade international sanctions imposed over the war. France and other countries have vowed to crack down on the sanction-busting so-called “shadow fleet.” French maritime authorities said the tanker was intercepted more than 400 nautical miles west of France, in international waters in the Atlantic. It was traveling from the northwestern Russian port of Murmansk, according to the authorities’ statement. Read More It said the tanker is suspected of operating under a false flag and that the French navy is now escorting it to an anchorage for more checks.Tankers previously intercepted by France include the Deyna, boarded in the Mediterranean Sea in March. Another tanker, the Grinch, intercepted in the Mediterranean in January, was released in February after paying a multimillion-euro penalty.

Venezuela’s ruling party unity cracks as Delcy Rodríguez shifts Chávez-era policies
Venezuela's acting President Delcy Rodriguez walks past a image of former President Hugo Chavez, left, and Independence hero Simon Bolivar at the National Assembly in Caracas, Venezuela, Jan. 15, 2026. (AP Photo/Ariana Cubillos, File)2026-06-01T08:10:25Z It’s a slogan that’s long encapsulated the unique ability of Hugo Chávez’s fiercely nationalistic revolution to stay in power in Venezuela for 27 years: “United, we will win!”The young, the old, ruling party leaders and propagandists alike shout it at official events, street demonstrations and on state television, pumping their fists to show loyalty to the self-described socialist government — and its traditional antipathy toward the United States. Even when confronted with overwhelming truths that defy such bravado, the diverse coalition of military, ideological and opportunistic hangers-on has acted in lockstep. But cracks in that unity have emerged after the stunning U.S. military operation that captured then- President Nicolás Maduro in January. Longtime loyalists are airing disagreements with the government of acting President Delcy Rodríguez and even discussing publicly rumors that an insider’s betrayal helped the U.S. depose Maduro. A warming relationship with the US draws criticismRodríguez, has done away with some of Chávez’s policies, complied with U.S. demands and shuffled the government to her liking, removing ministers, pushing legislation through the National Assembly to overhaul the nation’s oil industry and releasing political prisoners. Supporters of Chavismo are making their disapproval known. Many criticize the warming relationship between Rodríguez’s government and the White House, whose occupant, regardless of party, Chavismo has historically seen as its main adversary.May’s deportation of a former minister to face criminal investigations in the U.S. and Rodríguez’s recent authorization for the U.S. military to conduct a training exercise in Venezuela’s capital laid bare internal divisions. Mario Silva spent years spreading pro-government propaganda as the host of a program on state TV before being removed from the airwaves after Maduro’s capture. Silva questioned the legality of the deportation of Alex Saab, a close ally of Maduro’s, arguing that it violated a constitutional ban. Read More He contended that Rodríguez is not governing freely, as some decisions “are being made in the U.S. Embassy.” “The imperialists don’t negotiate. They conquer, test and probe — until our country shatters,” Silva said in a livestream. “Nobody is safe right now. And that is a concrete, terribly dangerous fact.”On May 23, a few dozen people in Caracas protested the training that saw two Marine Corps Osprey aircraft land at the U.S. Embassy. They held a Venezuelan flag with the message, “No to the Yankee drill” written over it. Participation was minimal, which stood out in a city used to frequent demonstrations with attendance in the thousands.Elías Jaua, who served as Chávez’s vice president and in Maduro’s cabinet in his first years in office, repudiated the exercise on social media. He later told The Associated Press he was speaking up to raise awareness among Venezuelans of the “humiliating” situation facing the country.“At this stage, the most important thing is to prevent this occupation and this colonial administration to which a nation like Venezuela is being subjected from becoming normalized,” Jaua said. Chávez and Maduro — as well as Rodríguez, in her previous roles as vice president and communications and foreign affairs minister — had long prophesied that the U.S. would use force to take control of Venezuela’s oil industry, which has opened up to private capital after Maduro’s capture. The Trump administration oversees oil sales and administers revenues as part of its phased plan to turn the troubled South American country around.Maduro’s ouster prompts power struggleThe social, political and economic crisis that took hold when Maduro became president in 2013 drove more than 7.7 million people to leave Venezuela and pushed millions of others into poverty. It also led to rounds of anti-government protests and U.S. economic sanctions, both of which the ruling party survived.Party stalwarts celebrated a Maduro victory in a 2024 election despite overwhelming evidence showing he had lost. They also echoed the party leadership’s denial of a surge of migration. Their loyalty was often rewarded, be it with food and basic goods for the poor or multimillion-dollar contracts and bodyguards for the better-off. Andrés Izarra, a communications minister under Chávez and tourism minister under Maduro, said the fractures are not based in ideology or a defense of Chavismo, which he believes ended when its founder died in 2013. Maduro’s interest, he said, was in enriching himself and remaining in power at all costs.. Self-interest, he said, is creating division.“Since there is no ideological foundation, it is simply a struggle for power, money, positions, and survival. Do you think (he) would be protesting if he’d kept his bodyguards, or if they’d kept his little salary, or his share of power?” Izarra, who lives in exile since becoming a government target last decade, said of one critic of change under Delcy. “If they had an ideological interest, they would have spoken much earlier.” Loyalists discuss possible betrayal of MaduroCriticism even aired on state television last month, when a Colombian leftist leader sitting in the audience of Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello’s show stood up and questioned Venezuela’s efforts to free Maduro and first lady Cilia Flores from U.S. custody.“We’ve seen a very weak campaign for Cilia and Nicolás’s freedom,” Manuel Caicedo said before a visibly stunned Cabello.Another devout Chavista, lawmaker Iris Varela, told a podcaster she believed a government insider had helped the U.S. oust Maduro. The idea has widely rumored since President Donald Trump announced that the authoritarian leader had been captured on Jan. 3, but no evidence has emerged. Of course there’s a betrayal,” Varela said. “I say that every Christ has a Judas. If our Lord Jesus Christ knew he was going to be betrayed and yet he let Judas kiss him on the cheek, ... won’t a traitor emerge for Maduro?”

Rescuers search for alternative route to reach 2 missing in a flooded Laos cave
In this image released by Metta Tham Rescue Kalasin, rescuers try to reach people who have been trapped in a cave in Xaisomboun province, Laos, Tuesday, May 26, 2026. (Metta Tham Rescue Kalasin via AP)2026-06-01T06:57:23Z BANGKOK (AP) — Rescue workers in Laos searched Monday for an alternative passage into a flooded cave where two people are believed to have been trapped for nearly two weeks after heavy rainfall flooded the main entrance, making it impassable. The two people remain unaccounted for since a search and rescue operation began last month in a rugged area of Xaisomboun province, about 120 kilometers (75 miles) north of the capital, Vientiane. Five of the seven people initially trapped inside the cave have been rescued.Malaysian diver Lee Kian Lie, who is involved in the operation, said workers were pumping water out of the cave.“We will go into the suspected area to continue the search if the water level is lowered,” he told The Associated Press.Another team of rescuers is also looking around the other side of the cave in hopes of finding a dry passage that could provide access to the area where the missing people are believed to be trapped, he said. Rescue teams from Laos and neighboring Thailand have been working together for more than a week. They were joined by divers from countries including Finland, Malaysia, Japan, Indonesia, France and Australia. Several of the rescuers previously took part in the complicated 2018 cave rescue in northern Thailand that saved 12 schoolboys and their soccer coach from a flooded cave.Laos’s Rescue Volunteer for People group posted on its Facebook page that heavy rain caused “massive amounts of water” to flow down into the area, forcing them to suspend operations on Sunday night. Read More Kengkaj Bongkawong, head of the Thai group Metta Tham Rescue Kalasin, said that the workers are also looking for air shafts from above that may provide access into the cave.Rescuers believe the two missing people are trapped deeper inside the cave than the location where the five survivors were originally found on Wednesday. But the passage into that area is said to be very narrow and heavily flooded. The villagers reportedly entered the cave nearly two weeks ago to look for valuable minerals such as gold before being trapped by a flash flood that blocked their way out. One other villager escaped and alerted the authorities. The first man was safely extracted on Friday, guided through a narrow flooded passage by an expert diver. The remaining four left the cave on Saturday after the water receded enough for them to walk out on their own, rescuers said. 获取更多RSS:https://feedx.net https://feedx.site

ASK IRA: Could Thunder emerge as a Heat threat for Giannis?
Q: Ira, are the Thunder now going to jump in to grab Giannis Antetokounmpo from the Heat? – Sal.A: First, no one is grabbing anyone from the Heat, because at this point it’s all just speculation until the Bucks take a stance. And the Thunder hardly are in a position of desperation after a highly contested Western Conference finals against the Spurs. But, yes, with their trove of draft picks and quality roster components, the Thunder would be well positioned when it comes to a potential offer for Giannis Antetokounmpo. But there remain several overriding factors. First, assuming Giannis watched the West playoffs, he would be aware of the level of challenge just to make it out of the conference. Second, does he want to play second fiddle to MVP Shai-Gilgeous Alexander? Third, would he commit to spend the balance of his career in Oklahoma? Yes, the Thunder likely could trump other offers, but Giannis will also have a say because of his ability to hit free agency as soon as the 2027 offseason.Related Articles Submit your “Ask Ira” question here! Q: I just hope as a Heat fan, they have a Plan B and C if this Giannis Antetokounmpo deal doesn’t happen. – Douglas.A: That will come down to what other elite talent might potentially hit the market. But it also would not be surprising to hear plenty of, “We like our young talent.” The pivot could be more in the messaging than the roster construction.Q: In 2010 we were on top of the world. Since 2014 we have been stuck in purgatory aside from a few irrelevant blips. My question would be has the “Heat Culture” thing been to our own detriment? We are a premiere destination, the whole world wants to come to Miami, but NBA players not so much. We all know our training program is as intensive as any in the league, does it really serve a city like us? Wouldn’t it be better suited for a smaller-market team to run their practices like boot camp with the whole underdog mentality? All we are doing is chasing players away. I think we are better off toning it down and letting South Beach do the talking for us. We can bank on the city’s natural appeal. This generation does not respond to our old-school tactics, it just deters them. – Glen.A: Nah. For all the talk by some talking-head former players about the Heat way being a detriment to recruiting, actual examples are few and far between. Players want to go where (after, of course, getting paid) they are positioned to succeed. The Heat have been doing that for years and for decades. And for their part, the Heat have little need for those looking for the easy way out. And this is about far more than LeBron’s cookies. In the end, he has been consistent in his praise for the Heat way.

Jerome Bettis comments on Kenneth Walker III signing with the Chiefs
This week, Chiefs Wire's Ed Easton Jr. spoke with Pro Football Hall of Fame running back Jerome Bettis. In his interview with Easton Jr., Bettis discusses his participation in this year's American Century Championship, which will take place July 10-12 at Edgewood Tahoe and air on NBC and Peacock. He discussed Super Bowl LX Most Valuable Player Kenneth Walker III signing with the Kansas City Chiefs this offseason."I feel good, not great," said Bettis regarding his preparation for the American Century Championship tournament, "I got a new swing that I've been working with, and ultimately I think it makes me a better player, but still it's untested under stress, so that's the difficult part about it, but I feel really good about where I am."During the 2025 season, Walker rushed for 1,027 yards to go along with five touchdowns. He was also impactful in the passing game with 31 receptions for 282 yards. Bettis weighed in on his decision to sign a lucrative three-year deal with the Chiefs instead of staying with the Seattle Seahawks."Well, I think when you look at the utilization of how they were using him before he left, he was, he was really splitting time with Zach Charbonnet and so I think they didn't have a full appreciation for him already, because they were bringing in the number two guy, he was playing a lot more." said Bettis, "I think the writing was on the wall in the sense that they were, they felt good about some of the other guys that they had already, so I wasn't surprised to see him leave. I thought they might offer him, but probably wouldn't give him the best contract. It turns out Kansas City wanted him and went to get him, so his value was there. It just wasn't there for the Seahawks."The annual tournament awards $750,000 in prize money, much of which the celebrity players donate to local and national charities. Over the years, over $8 million has been donated to non-profit causes. Network television exposure on NBC/Peacock and a first-place prize of $150,000 make the celebrity tournament one of the most prestigious in golf.View this post on Instagram

Today in Boston Celtics history: KG knuckle pushups, Cs beat Heat in G3 '12 ECF; Shaq retires
Today in Boston Celtics history, the storied franchise defeated the Miami Heat 101-91 in Game 3 of the 2012 Eastern Conference Finals. Although the LeBron James-led Heat ultimately secured the series in seven games, the Celtics pushed them in a major way. Game 3 of the series was no exception, either. Future Hall of Fame big man Kevin Garnett spearheaded Boston's efforts with 24 points and 11 rebounds, while fellow Hall of Fame forward Paul Pierce chipped in another 23 points. Point guard Rajon Rondo recorded 21 points, 6 rebounds, and 10 assists, and shooting guard Ray Allen added another 10 points and 5 rebounds to the victory. It was also the game of Garnett’s infamous knuckle pushups after getting knocked to the ground on a hard foul in the second quarter. “I’m getting crap about my form, but I want people to know it’s because it was on my knuckles,” KG jested after the game (via the Associated Press).“That’s old school. My uncle taught me to do pushups on my knuckles. That’s some Army-Navy stuff.”Historic milestones“You’re trying to fight back the whole time,” said LeBron of the Heat’s failed comeback attempt. James scored four points in the game’s final frame, shut down by Boston’s defense as his rivals seemingly couldn’t miss. “We made a run but it was too much.”Exactly one year earlier, Celtics center Shaquille O’Neal officially announced his retirement after an injury-plagued season with Boston did not go as planned.“I’m going to miss the competition. I’m going to miss, you know, the chase for the ring. I’m actually going to miss everything,” shared Shaq via ESPN’s Jackie MacMullan. His 19 seasons and copious accolades placed him among the greatest that ever played. The onetime LSU star was properly honored by the league with his inclusion in the league’s all-time 75 greatest players list and by the sport with his induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. This article originally appeared on Celtics Wire: Celtics history: KG knuckle pushups, Cs beat Heat in G3 '12 ECF; Shaq retires
