Real Madrid superstar’s contract renewal takes major twist ahead of World Cup
Real Madrid superstar’s contract renewal takes major twist ahead of World CupVinicius Jr’.s contract situation is becoming one of the biggest talking points surrounding Real Madrid, with the upcoming FIFA World Cup now emerging as a major factor in the negotiations between the club and the Brazilian.According to AS, discussions over a new deal have remained completely frozen for almost ten months despite both parties previously appearing close to reaching an agreement. The forward remains contracted until 2027, but the lack of progress has ensured that uncertainty continues to surround one of Real Madrid’s most valuable players. While neither side appears concerned about an immediate separation, the passage of time is beginning to shift the balance of power, especially with the World Cup rapidly approaching.Contract talks remain on holdAccording to the outlet, Real Madrid and Vinicius were close to finalising a contract extension before negotiations unexpectedly stalled last summer. A lot depends on how Vinicius performs at the World Cup. (Photo by Buda Mendes/Getty Images)At the time, there was confidence that an agreement would eventually be reached after both parties agreed to revisit the matter later, although that follow-up has yet to happen. With Real Madrid currently immersed in a presidential election process and several important sporting matters taking priority, there appears to be little expectation that negotiations will resume before the World Cup.Now, in that context, a strong World Cup campaign would increase Vinicius’ leverage when discussions restart. Not only would it further strengthen his standing at Real Madrid, but it would also increase interest across Europe should his future remain unresolved.Vinicius holds a stronger position than beforeAS also notes that when negotiations previously broke down, the player had already lowered his original salary demands considerably. Vinicius’ renewal will not be solved before the World Cup. (Photo by Fran Santiago/Getty Images)Initial requests reportedly approached €30 million per season, but both sides eventually moved much closer together, creating optimism that a deal was near before everything came to a halt.Notably, when Vinicius last renewed his contract in 2022, he agreed to a progressive deal worth an average of €15 million net per season. That figure places him among the club’s highest earners, but comparisons with Kylian Mbappe continue to influence the discussions. That is why the current negotiations go beyond simple wages, as they are also about status and recognition within the team.

Barcelona’s pursuit of 18-year-old winger loses momentum amid valuation dispute
Barcelona’s pursuit of 18-year-old winger loses momentum amid valuation disputeBarcelona’s plans to strengthen their youth ranks this summer have encountered an obstacle, with the club now easing their pursuit of highly-rated winger Jesse Bisiwu.According to SPORT, the Catalan giants have decided to lower the intensity of their efforts to sign the 18-year-old Club Brugge prospect after encountering significant difficulties during negotiations. The Belgian youngster had emerged as one of the standout names on Barcelona’s shortlist as the club looked to secure another promising talent for the future. For several weeks, there had been growing optimism surrounding a potential operation. Barcelona’s sporting department had closely monitored Bisiwu’s development and viewed him as a player capable of fitting into the club’s long-term project. However, recent developments have forced a reassessment of the situation.Barcelona hit obstacle in negotiationsView this post on InstagramA post shared by @bisiwujesseAs reported by the outlet, Barcelona had already made initial contact with Club Brugge and even submitted an opening proposal for the young winger. The response from the Belgian club, however, was far from encouraging.Club Brugge considered Barcelona’s offer well below the valuation they have placed on one of the most highly regarded players within their academy structure. As a result, discussions failed to gain the momentum Barcelona had hoped for.The situation became even more complicated despite the fact that Bisiwu has reportedly turned down several attempts by Club Brugge to extend his current contract, which still runs until 2027. View this post on InstagramA post shared by @bisiwujesseWhile that detail could have strengthened Barcelona’s position in negotiations, the Belgian club remain firm in their demands and are unwilling to lower their expectations.Barcelona looking at alternative targetsOne of the key features of Barcelona’s recruitment strategy in recent years has been flexibility. Rather than becoming dependent on a single target, the club’s scouting network continuously tracks multiple players across different markets.Hence, Barcelona are now intensifying their search for other young wingers with high potential. In fact, contacts have already been established with alternative profiles. While that does not mean the door is completely closed on Bisiwu, his priority level has clearly dropped as negotiations remain far apart.

Who is Man Utd's signing of the season?
[Getty Images]BBC Radio Manchester's Joe McGrath and Gaz Drinkwater have selected goalkeeper Senne Lammens as Manchester United's signing of the season after an impressive debut campaign succeeding the struggling Andre Onana. The 23-year-old has looked assured in his 32 Premier League starts since his summer move from Royal Antwerp, keeping eight clean sheets as the Red Devils finished third.Find out who won the rest of the awards by listening to the full episode on BBC Sounds"Across the board, on social media, on our emails, Lammens is number one for everyone," McGrath told The Devils' Advocate podcast, from BBC Sounds."They understand we had difficult seasons with Onana in goal. You look back at some of the mistakes from last year and scratch your head. He was never going to be our number one goalkeeper going forward if we had anything about us."Lammens seems to to have his head well and truly screwed on and he seems very calculated. Going forward, in build-up with a great team around him, I think he will just get better and better. It has been a remarkable season for all our summer signings but Lammens is our number one."Drinkwater added: "Lammens has had a fantastic season."He's an 8.5 out of 10 signing. He's my signing of the season."Explore all Manchester United content on BBC Sounds[BBC]

Arsenal’s William Saliba may undergo post-World Cup back surgery
Arsenal’s William Saliba may undergo post-World Cup back surgeryArsenal centre-back William Saliba (25) could be set for surgery post-World Cup, as per a report from L’Équipe.Saliba has been managing a back issue for several weeks, and whilst it did not prevent him from completing the full 120 minutes in the UEFA Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday, the pains have since worsened, as per L’Équipe. World Cup spot no longer under threat?Foot Mercato reported on Monday that there was a risk of the defender missing several weeks of action, which would have put his place in France’s World Cup squad in doubt. Saliba’s entourage were particularly concerned, Didier Deschamps’ medical staff less so. Tests that took place on Monday were positive.L’Équipe understand that Arsenal were already aware that they wouldn’t be able to count on the defender post-World Cup, and surgery may happen at the end of the summer. Whilst the signs are that Saliba will now take part in the FIFA World Cup for Les Bleus, there are now concerns that he may not be present come the start of the Premier League season.GFFN | Luke Entwistle

Barcelona reach five-year agreement with superstar forward – report
Barcelona reach five-year agreement with superstar forward – reportBarcelona’s pursuit of Julian Alvarez continues to generate headlines, and the latest reports coming from Argentina have provided fresh encouragement for the Catalan club’s ambitions.According to information from Argentine outlet DSports Radio, relayed by Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona and Alvarez have already reached an agreement over a five-year contract. While no deal has been struck with Atletico Madrid at this stage, the report claims that the player has given the green light to a long-term project at Camp Nou.The development arrives at a time when Barcelona remain committed to signing the Argentine international despite facing constant resistance from Atletico Madrid throughout the summer.Barcelona agree terms with AlvarezAs reported by the outlet, Barcelona have already completed an important part of the operation by securing an agreement with the player himself.Barcelona have reached an agreement with Alvarez. (Photo by Shaun Botterill/Getty Images)The report suggests that Alvarez has accepted the idea of joining Barcelona on a contract that would run for five seasons, even though convincing Atletico Madrid remains an entirely different challenge. It must be noted that Barcelona have already made significant efforts to test Atletico’s resolve, including a reported offer worth €100 million. However, that proposal was not enough to persuade the Madrid club, who continue to insist that the striker is not for sale.In fact, club president Enrique Cerezo recently reinforced Atletico’s position when discussing Alvarez’s future.“Julian is an Atlético player and will remain so for many years to come,” he said.Alvarez wants to play for Barcelona. (Photo by Justin Setterfield/Getty Images)Despite those public declarations, the latest information from Argentina claims negotiations could eventually be completed for a fee between €120 million and €125 million, although no agreement between the two clubs currently exists. So what now? While the latest report offers optimism for Barcelona, the reality is that conflicting information continues to emerge from different sources.Only recently, reports in Spain suggested that Alvarez had agreed to improved salary terms with Atletico Madrid, a development that appeared to strengthen the club’s chances of keeping hold of their star forward. The latest claims from Argentina point in the opposite direction, suggesting the player has already chosen Barcelona as his preferred destination.Hence, until a real breakthrough occurs between the two clubs, Alvarez’s future remains one of the biggest unresolved stories of the summer transfer window.

Report: Lakers assistant GM candidate expected to stay put with 76ers
Under the leadership of new majority owner Mark Walter, the Los Angeles Lakers have been revamping their front office over the last several months. They're going from being run like a mom-and-pop small business to operating the way a modern-day NBA franchise is supposed to.A few weeks ago, general manager and president of basketball operations Rob Pelinka said the franchise would look to hire two assistant general managers. It filled one of those roles by hiring Rohan Ramadas, who was previously the New Orleans Pelicans' vice president of basketball operations and strategy and was described by a Pelicans source as a "literal rocket scientist."Los Angeles also recently got permission to interview Prosper Karangwa, the Philadelphia 76ers' vice president of player personnel, for its other assistant general manager opening. But according to NBA insider Marc Stein, L.A. may strike out on its efforts to lure Karangwa (h/t Heavy Sports).“There is a growing anticipation that Prosper Karangwa will elect to stay with the 76ers after the hiring of Mike Gansey as the team’s new president of basketball operations,” Stein wrote Monday in The Stein Line. “Karangwa is the Sixers’ vice president of player personnel and has drawn interest in recent weeks from the Los Angeles Lakers and Dallas.”If Stein is correct and Karangwa stays put, it won't be the first time this year the Lakers have been told no by an attractive front-office candidate. According to a recent report by Yaron Weitzman, they offered Minnesota Timberwolves assistant general manager Steve Senior the role of executive vice president of basketball operations, but Senior said no.This article originally appeared on LeBron Wire: Report: Lakers assistant GM candidate expected to stay put with 76ers

Will Monaco suit Ferrari more than rivals? F1 Q&A
Lewis Hamilton has won three times at the Monaco Grand Prix - in 2008 with McLaren and 2016 and 2019 with Mercedes [Getty Images]The European leg of the 2026 Formula 1 season begins with round six at the Monaco Grand Prix this weekend. Teenager Kimi Antonelli holds a 43-point advantage over Mercedes team-mate George Russell at the top of the drivers' championship following his fourth consecutive win of the campaign in Canada two weeks ago. Before the race in Monte Carlo, BBC Sport F1 correspondent Andrew Benson answers your latest questions. Why is the Monaco Grand Prix expected to suit Ferrari more than McLaren, Mercedes or Red Bull? - AndrewMercedes have dominated the 2026 season so far, winning all the grands prix from pole position. The only time they have beaten to either the front of the grid or a victory was in the sprint in Miami, when Lando Norris took pole and the win for McLaren. The reason Monaco has been identified as a place where that run may end, particularly in favour of Ferrari, is to do with car, engine and driver characteristics.Monaco is the least power-sensitive track on the calendar. In other words, it is the track where cornering performance - particularly at low and medium-speed - is most important, and engine power least. The Ferrari car this year has proved to be quick in the corners, arguably the fastest. That's good for Monaco.Meanwhile, its engine has both strengths and weaknesses. It has good low-speed pick-up, hence their good starts, but lacks top-end power. Again, good for Monaco, where a responsive engine is a benefit, and top-end power is relatively less important. As for the drivers, Charles Leclerc is an ace around Monaco. In the past six years, he has qualified on pole three times, been second on the grid twice and third once.Lewis Hamilton has also traditionally excelled at Monaco, and is in much better form this year after his struggles in 2024 and 2025.He and Leclerc are tied 4-4 in their qualifying head to head this season, and Leclerc has an average advantage of only 0.037 seconds.Add all that together, and it's easy to see why Ferrari are fancied for a potential win this year.Having said that, performance is performance. Ferrari's average deficit to Mercedes in qualifying this year is 0.447 seconds, and that's a big margin to make up just on a swing of characteristics. And it would be unwise to rule out McLaren and Red Bull. The McLaren was quick in Miami, and has proved particularly good in low-speed corners this year. And Lando Norris won in Monaco from pole last year. While Max Verstappen is outstanding always. It could be the closest weekend of the year so far.Classic Monaco Grand Prix images through the yearsIs Kimi Antonelli being overhyped due to results that largely he's been a tad fortunate with? Aside from China, in Miami he benefited from a better strategy call by Mercedes to beat Lando Norris, Suzuka was the safety car and Canada saw McLaren's mistake and George Russell retire. - GavinKimi Antonelli has definitely had luck on his side this year, and there is no question that the size of his lead over Mercedes team-mate George Russell - 43 points after five races - is in large part a consequence of that.Russell's retirement from the lead with an engine problem in Canada was particularly damaging for the Briton. It's also true that the timing of the safety car in Japan handed Antonelli the lead on a plate, that Russell's technical problems in China qualifying - first with a gearbox glitch and then a front-wing issue - prevented him from fighting for pole there, and that McLaren dropped the ball on strategy in Miami, allowing Antonelli to undercut Norris for the lead.At the same time, there is no question that Antonelli has raised his level significantly this year, is living up to the potential Mercedes have long seen in him, and is a legitimate championship leader. In China, his front wing actually had the same problem on his final lap in qualifying as Russell's did. And in Japan, Mercedes felt he was on track to take the lead regardless of the safety car, such was his pace on medium tyres once in clear air.And you can hardly hold against him McLaren's fallibility in Miami, or the issue with Russell's engine in Montreal. While Russell was leading in Canada when he retired, it was very far from a comfortable lead. Antonelli was all over him, and looked faster. The destiny of the victory was wide open. And while they are tied in the head-to-head qualifying battle 4-4, Antonelli is slightly quicker on average so far this season, by 0.074secs.So, yes, the size of Antonelli's lead is partly due to circumstances, but it's equally true that he has had an outstanding season so far against a driver who is himself outstanding. There are plenty of twists and turns to come, and luck usually evens itself out over a season - although that was not the case between Hamilton and Nico Rosberg at Mercedes in 2016, it has to be said.Given the massive attention to detail associated with F1 engineering, what possibly happened when Fernando Alonso was forced to retire from Canada with a loose seat. Surely such a fundamental item should be fitted correctly? - IanThe question contains a misunderstanding of what happened to cause Fernando Alonso's retirement in Canada. He did not have a loose seat. He had a problem with his seating position. As Alonso said after the race: "I felt increasingly uncomfortable. The position wasn't right and, since we were out of the points, far from the points zone, and with no threat of rain, we decided to put an end to the pain. We tried to adjust a few things last night, but it didn't work."Aston Martin's chief trackside officer Mike Krack explained that the issue was rooted in a seating position that this year is more reclined than in previous seasons, the idea being to lower the centre of gravity.Krack said: "He hasn't felt completely comfortable for a while now - never to the point of becoming a real obstacle, but it's like a pressure point that gets worse lap after lap, and I think we need to reconsider the seating position a bit."With these cars, you always try to sit as low as possible, and if you look at how drivers have been sitting in recent years, the position has become increasingly more relaxed. Maybe we've gone a step too far, but it's something we need to look into."This issue has nothing whatsoever to do with Alonso's age.The team are going to try out a few solutions to the problem in Monaco this weekend, such as Alonso perhaps sitting a little higher, or adjusting the pedals.Fernando Alonso and Aston Martin team-mate Lance Stroll are yet to score a point in the drivers' championship this year [Getty Images]FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem seems to be gathering together all the strings of power within the FIA into his own hands. His latest move appears to give himself the presidency for life. Why aren't we hearing more voices condemning this, as it surely cannot be a good thing? - PhilThis is a reference to the story in which BBC Sport revealed last week that Ben Sulayem is seeking to remove presidential term limits from the FIA statutes. This is the latest of a series of moves in recent times that seem designed to entrench Ben Sulayem's position and, critics argue, undermine good governance and transparency at the FIA.These moves have been extensively reported on by BBC Sport in the past two years or so, but they include removing checks and balances in the FIA's governance structure, repeated sackings of people following apparent disagreements with Ben Sulayem, and the fact that he ended up facing no opposition in the election campaign last year as a result of an arcane rule that prevented anyone else from standing. This rule was in place before Ben Sulayem became president. The FIA has always offered a robust response to any such accusations, insisting it is a democratic organisation upholding good governance standards. It says it has "taken steps since 2021 to strengthen its corporate governance policies", which "ensure its rules, practices and processes are robust and transparent".It also points out that all changes to governance processes were voted through by member clubs with heavy majorities.Ben Sulayem and the FIA election process are currently being challenged in the French courts by former racing driver Laura Villars. There has been a significant level of disquiet in F1 at the way Ben Sulayem is conducting himself in office since very early in his first term, and little has changed on that front. At the same time, people in F1 are wary of speaking publicly on the matter, for fear of recriminations. There is also very little anyone in F1 can do about it. Neither the teams nor F1 itself have any say in the running of the FIA. Ultimately, only the FIA member clubs have a say on their president. And the voting numbers are heavily in Ben Sulayem's favour.Given the increased performance, power deployment and higher grip levels of the latest F1 cars, shouldn't some of the circuits be improved to reflect this increased performance and to ensure the safety of drivers? - JohnThe 2026 F1 cars do have faster acceleration than their predecessors, owing to the increased output of the electrical components of the power-units.However, their total engine power is in the same ballpark as last year's engines - about 1,000bhp - and they actually have significantly lower grip levels than before.Downforce has been reduced this year by quite a large amount, and the cars' performance in, particularly, high-speed corners is much reduced compared with last year.As for circuit safety, the FIA and F1 are constantly working to improve and refine this; changes are made every year in one way or another. At the same time, the performance of the cars is also kept under consideration, and when rules change, this tends to be reined in a little, to ensure speeds do not get out of balance.

    5 Ups & 4 Downs From WWE Raw (1 Jun - Results & Review)
WWEAfter a hugely disappointing Clash in Italy, WWE was back at it 24 hours later with an episode of Raw that served as a modest improvement, bolstered mainly by a couple of promos and a smart decision to heavily promote a match that didn’t even take place on WWE programming.Raw kicked off with Jacob Fatu doing the right thing and honoring the stipulation of Tribal Combat, making a point that he was following through to show his children that he was a man of his word, which oddly enough sets Fatu up to be the conscience of the new Bloodline. Look for Jey Uso to push buttons as the fully bought-in toady.Oba Femi should never have lost at Clash, but if you can separate that from Monday’s King of the Ring tournament opening match, the Ruler had a very good night Monday. Unfortunately, the women did not have as strong of an opening in the Queen of the Ring tournament.LA Knight surprisingly had a strong evening, berating Raw GM Adam Pearce for allegedly being a Bloodline sympathizer and enabler. It sounds crazy in writing, but the segment worked.Perhaps the smartest move WWE made was to dedicate a decent amount of Raw to promote the AAA mask versus mask match between the two El Grande Americanos, finally giving proper context to the feud and then airing the full match (and pageantry and post-match unmasking) while informing fans that this was one of the best matches in a good while (which surprisingly was not typical WWE hyperbole).Once again, a Raw main event involving the Vision was overly long, standard, and competently dull (or is it dully competent?).Overall, this was a decent episode when compared to Clash in Italy, but the product remains in desperate need of a reinvigoration. Oba Femi is a wonderful jolt, but he even can’t electrify 10 segments a week.Let’s get to it…DOWNS…4. She Knows She Sounds Like A Heel, Right?WWESomeone desperately needs to get to Sol Ruca and work on her promo delivery if she’s going to continue to portray a babyface.Ruca conducted an in-ring interview on Raw, during which she cut a promo that in parts gave strong “Liv Morgan vibes” – yelling “aaaallllllllll” at one point and speaking in that same wooden, grating voice that Liv uses to great effect to annoy fans. The difference is that Sol was trying to tell the crowd how proud she was to hold the Women’s Intercontinental Championship and intended to be a fighting champion. Instead, she sounded like someone who either had the “good/evil” switch flipped to “evil” or just hasn’t figured out how to cut a babyface-style promo. The message was fine. The delivery was terrible.3. Moves Happening In Front Of UsWWEUnlike the opening match of the King of the Ring tournament, the four-way bout kicking off the Queen of the Ring tournament did not flow nearly as well and just gave off “moves happening in front of everyone’s faces” vibes.Giulia, Roxanne Perez, Iyo Sky, and Lash Legend battled in this match, stumbling at various points through several sequences that didn’t really have any cohesion or flow. A couple of parts of the match looked fine – typically when Iyo and Roxanne were involved – but whenever they tried stacking offense with all four women, something inevitably looked off and felt artificial.Sky would pick up the win by disposing of Legend after she had laid out Perez and Giulia, finishing off Giulia (a bizarre move considering she was the fan favorite due to her Italian heritage) with a moonsault. This was the right result with Sky advancing, but it certainly isn’t a match that will be replayed ever again.2. Upon Further Review…WWE.com… the booking of the Oba Femi versus Brock Lesnar match at Clash in Italystill was atrocious.Less than 24 hours after Brock decimated Oba with seven F-5s, the Ruler went out on Raw and ran through three other men to win his first-round match in the King of the Ring tournament. While that was the right booking, having Femi bounce back like that meant that he was only “mostly dead” at Clash, and able to recover quickly – perhaps a bit too quickly, almost shrugging off the injuries. But here’s the part that really rings hollow. Even if WWE wanted to do a trilogy all along, they had a great roadmap to follow in Cody Rhodes versus Seth Rollins, where Cody won all three matches in their initial series, and no one blinked. They could have easily booked Oba to win Sunday and have Lesnar attack him afterward to issue the “a**-whooping” that he promised.Femi could have delivered the same post-match promo on Monday night, and it would have still rang true. The difference would have been that Oba still would have looked invincible heading into KOTR rather than being a wounded animal who needed the win to show he could shake off Sunday’s loss.1. Long Match. Barricade Spot. Repeat.WWEThe crowd noise, table spot, barricade spot, and outside interference would tell you that a lot happened during the Raw main event, and you might be inclined to think that this was a really good match. But Seth Rollins versus Bron Breakker was another of those overly long TV main events that just kept chugging along at 0.75 speed, making sure to hit every move in both wrestlers’ arsenals, including repeat signatures and finishers.Throw in a run-in from “Stone Cold” Austin Theory, a save from Montez Ford, and a barricade spot (not another one!) that inexplicably took out Paul Heyman, and you’ve got this match in a nutshell. As with most Rollins matches, this was pretty well worked, but it’s another in a long series of three-star specials that will fade into a mosaic of similar matches. There was a cute callback to Bret Hart and Goldberg in WCW, with Rollins (the babyface) using Breakker’s tag belt as a shield to knock out a charging Bron when he went for a spear. But otherwise, this was just another long main event that accomplished little. The match also served to further neuter the Vision, an act well past its sell-by date, and knocked Breakker down a peg in the process, which is counterproductive for a company that desperately needs to start pushing its younger stars and try to build the next generation of talent.UPS…5. A Fun Tag MatchWWEThe LWO might be defunct as a group, but that doesn’t mean that two of its former members can’t team up and have a rollicking tag match on Raw.Rey Mysterio and Dragon Lee took on the allies-of-convenience Rusev and Ethan Page on Raw in a tag match that followed a very simple – yet effective – formula. The fans achingly wanted to see the WWE Hall-of-Famer in the match, so the heels naturally kept Rey on the apron, except for when Dragon lunged for the tag. That’s when Page yanked Mysterio to the floor.Rusev and Page worked well together, but eventually, the natural chemistry between Rey and Dragon overcame the villains, as they ran into each other a couple times, allowing Mysterio to hit a 619 and Drop the Dime on All Ego to pick up the win. This was light, simple fare that strung together good action with a crowd-pleasing result. While not weighty, it was perfectly acceptable wrestling.4. Knight On The (Verbal) WarpathLA Knight gives Adam Pearce a piece of his MIND about The Bloodline! YEAH! @RealLAKnight | @ScrapDaddyAPpic.twitter.com/kn9D87pnmP— WWE (@WWE) June 1, 2026The reunification of the Bloodline has rubbed LA Knight a certain way, and it isn’t good.In recent weeks, Knight has been cautioning the Usos to not fall back into their old ways alongside Roman Reigns, but Monday night, he directed his venom at Raw GM Adam Pearce, lighting into the middle-manager after the show-opening Acknowledgement Ceremony.Knight pointed out that Pearce has been awfully deferential to Reigns recently, including making a house call to his locker room. LA asked if the GM was “feeling Ucey” and offered to get Pearce an “Honorary Uce” T-shirt and suggested they go to the merch stand to buy an “ufa laffa” necklace. He continued to rant at Pearce, noting that the GM was giving the Megastar more energy than he had ever given Roman, warning that he wasn’t going to take that from him.Just when it looked like Pearce was going to make his case, he gestured with an index finger at Knight, who raised it above the GM’s head to acknowledge the Tribal Chief. At this stage, Knight has to feel like he’s taking crazy pills watching the Bloodline re-form and slowly sink back into its heelish routine while everyone just tries to placate Roman. He might seem a bit delusional right now, but LA as the guy sounding the alarm after fighting against them for years is the right call, and when he’s proven right, he might be in a position to help lead the resistance.3. WWE Leans Into LuchaAAAEven a company as notoriously obtuse as WWE had to recognize that they unwittingly were sitting on a serious match of the year contender from this past weekend, and they decided to play it up Monday night.Unfortunately for Paul Levesque, the match in question occurred during AAA’s Noche de Los Grandes event on Saturday, with El Grande Americano facing “Original” El Grande Americano in a mask-versus-mask match. They delivered an absolutely stellar match that was the talk of the wrestling world.Rather than allow this instant classic to hide in a promotion that mainly exists in the United States on YouTube, WWE aired it in full after Raw on Monday night, with the announcers talking it up in great detail during the program and airing a hype video for it as well.It says a lot about the piss-poor booking in WWE proper that two main roster midcarders donned masks (along with four other under-utilized superstars) and turned out a feud and match like Saturday’s mask-versus-mask war in AAA in a show booked by the Undertaker. As much as this deserves praise from WWE for incorporating it into Raw, this should serve as an indictment on the main roster’s creative team and their utter inability to do anything even remotely approaching this feud and match.2. Fatu Acknowledges His Tribal ChiefWWEIf the long-term goal of Jacob Fatu losing Tribal Combat and joining Roman Reigns’ troupe is to elevate the Samoan Werewolf ala Jey Uso, then Monday night was a good start to that journey.Fatu walked out and spoke about understanding the repercussions of Tribal Combat and how he was there as a man, honoring the stipulation and keeping his word, serving as an example to his children. He acknowledged Reigns and took his place beside the Tribal Chief, which he had agreed to do if he lost on Sunday. In doing so, Jacob showed dignity and respect, which likely will be tested in the coming weeks and months. If they book this properly, Fatu should be viewed as the conscience of the Bloodline 2.0 as it predictably descends back into its old ways. This was just a starting point for him, honoring the stip.Jey coming full circle and going from the tormented, gaslit member of the Bloodline to the tormenter, jawing at Jacob and getting in his face, was a nice touch. Uso has gone from standing on his own to having guzzled a gallon of the Tribal Kool-Aid.One gripe, however: to accept this storyline, you have to dismiss the entire “Jacob is a wild man, a danger to Raw and should be fired” shtick from the previous month. He can’t simultaneously be a man of conviction and honor, and also a crazed lunatic who can’t be controlled. That’s a pretty big plot hole, and that knocks this down a couple pegs.1. KOTR Kicks Off With All-Action BattleWWESetting aside the unconscionably bad booking of Brock Lesnar versus Oba Femi, if you look at the opening match of the King of the Ring tournament, it was a great showcase for the Ruler in what should be a big few weeks for him.Penta, Solo Sikoa, and Carmelo Hayes recognized Femi as the universal threat in this match, trying to attack him at the outset – to no avail. They would occasionally get him out of the ring, and the remaining three would blitz through their best offense on each other to try to pick up the win before Oba could recover. But Femi kept coming back into the match, which necessitated Talla Tonga getting involved to finally put Oba down for a period. Penta nearly picked up the win with the Penta Driver, but Oba rose up and tore through everyone, rapidly taking out everyone – including Tonga – before dropping Solo with a Fall from Grace to advance in the tournament.Seeing the other three treat Femi as the threat that he was, and then wrestle with urgency every time he was briefly out of the picture, further illustrated how much of a game-changer he truly is. This is Oba’s tournament to lose; let’s just hope WWE isn’t dumb enough to somehow have Brock cost him the finals to set up their rubber match. All Future PLC brands are supported by its audience. Kerber wishes Zverev luck in Paris title bid but also warns
FILE PHOTO - Japanese tennis player Naomi Osaka in action against Germany's Angelique Kerber during their Women's Singles tennis match at Roland Garros during the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. Jan Woitas/dpaAngelique Kerber, the last German to win a grand slam singles title, wishes Alexander Zverev all the best in his quest for the French Open trophy but also says he has something to lose in Paris."If he loses everyone will be all over him. If he wins, everyone celebrates – that’s just the way it is in competitive sport, unfortunately," Kerber said.World number three Zverev has become the top contender for the title on Sunday after early exits of top ranked Jannik Sinner and veteran Novak Djokovic, plus the injury-related absence of title holder Carlos Alcaraz. The German has dropped only one set en route to the Paris quarter-finals where he faces exciting Spanish teenager Rafael Jódar later on Tuesday.Zeverev is yet to win a major, having lost all his three finals at the 2020 US Open, 2024 French Open and 2025 Australian Open.Kerber, who retired in 2024, won the 2016 Australian and US Open and her third grand slam title at 2018 Wimbledon is the last singles top spot for a German player.Kerber said that Zverev should "not think about" the position he is in, saying: "When you win a grand slam you win it."She said Zverev was doing the right thing with a cautious approach "and really take it day by day." He should be aware of his strengths and "not think too much in deciding moments," she added.German tennis player Alexander Zverev in action against France's Jesper De Jong during their men's Singles fourth round match the French Open tennis tournament (Roland Garros 2026), at Roland Garros Stadium. Real Madrid approach Inter for Dumfries as clubs queue up for Palestra
Real Madrid approach Inter for Dumfries as clubs queue up for PalestraMultiple outlets are reporting that Real Madrid are among the clubs interested in a deal for Inter wing-back Denzel Dumfries, which could have an impact on the increasingly competitive race to sign Marco Palestra from Atalanta.Real Madrid tailing Dumfries, Palestra interest hots upDumfries is among the players who could leave Inter this summer due to the fact that he has a €25m release clause in his contract. Reports indicate that this clause will be valid only for teams outside of Italy and that it will expire in mid-July.According to the likes of Fabrizio Romano and Gianluca Di Marzio, Real Madrid are among the clubs interested in taking advantage of the release clause in Dumfries’s Nerazzurri contract. Di Marzio claims that there has been an initial approach from the 15-time Champions League winners.Selling Dumfries this summer could help Inter towards coming up with the funds they need to land a deal for Italy talent Palestra, who is valued in the region of €50m.Reports over the weekend claimed that Inter are ready to make Palestra their ‘priority’ signing this transfer window, although more recent updates suggest that they will face stiff competition from the Premier League from the likes of Manchester City, Newcastle United or potentially Champions League finalists Arsenal.CAGLIARI, ITALY – FEBRUARY 16: Marco Palestra of Cagliari in action during the Serie A match between Cagliari Calcio and US Lecce at Stadio Sant’Elia on February 16, 2026 in Cagliari, Italy. Scott McTominay: Ex-United ace reveals Sir Alex’s classy gesture
Scott McTominay: Ex-United ace reveals Sir Alex’s classy gestureFormer Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay has shed light on a heartwarming gesture from legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson. The Scotland international is gearing up for an eventful summer after helping his nation qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. McTominay rose through the ranks at Old Trafford and broke into the first team under former manager Jose Mourinho. Legend has it that Sir Alex personally recommended the player to the Portuguese, backing him for success at Old Trafford.McTominay became a regular feature under Mourinho’s successor, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, although he continued to divide opinion among fans. Erik ten Hag’s arrival at the Theatre of Dreams in 2022, however, proved to be a turning point in the Scot’s career. The Dutchman opted to cash in on McTominay and signed Manuel Ugarte as his replacement in the summer of 2024. The 29 year old moved to Napoli and has successfully turned his career around.McTominay’s rise in Serie AIn his first season in Serie A, McTominay helped Napoli win the league, finishing the campaign with 13 goals and six assists in 39 appearances. That earned him a nomination for the Ballon d’Or and a permanent place in the hearts of fans.Affectionately dubbed “McFratm”, the player has a shrine mural dedicated to him on San Nicola a Nilo Street in the Decumani District of the city. The Scot has been equally decisive this season for the Partenopei, helping them finish second in the league and win the Supercoppa Italiana. McTominay ended his second campaign in Serie A with 14 goals and four assists in 44 appearances across all competitions. Scott McTominay Stats: 25/26 SeasonSource: Transfermarkt. The fact that the Scot has flourished in Italy while Ugarte is now a peripheral figure at the Theatre of Dreams suggests that United got this transfer wrong. The player has been linked with a blockbuster return to his alma mater in recent months as well, especially with the Red Devils expected to bolster their midfield this summer. McTominay recently sat down for an interview in which he spoke about a range of topics, including a secret conversation with former United manager Sir Alex.McTominay reveals special Sir Alex Ferguson conversationSpeaking to British GQ Magazine, McTominay revealed how Sir Alex reached out to him last September. He said: “I spoke to Sir Alex in September, which was amazing. He called me, and I was extremely grateful that he took the time to speak to me and just ask me about how I was doing and football and stuff like that.”“So it was lovely to speak to him. I was only a young kid when he was leaving [Manchester United], so for him to think of me was extremely special, because he’s the greatest to ever do it, in my opinion.”“It was No Caller ID. I answered and just said “Hello?” because I answer every call [laughs]. I feel like I have to. And he just said, “How are you doing, son?” And so I knew fairly quickly who it was.”“We had a nice catch-up. It was probably more normal than what people would think — just like your friend calling you up, for example, and asking how you’re getting on and stuff like that. But, yeah, it was really special.”“Yeah. It’s probably personal, so I wouldn’t ever want to say anything out of turn. But he’s always had great advice. He’s so iconic that every single word, you just bottle up, and you always try to remember it for future games. And then three months later, we qualified for the World Cup. So the conversation must have inspired something.”Final ThoughtsUnited were left to rue their decision to part ways with McTominay, whose tenacity and eye for goal could have been invaluable to the club. While the Red Devils remain in the market for midfield reinforcements this summer, the player’s return appears unlikely, especially since he will turn 30 in December. Afghanistan to host India for T20I series in Delhi in September
NEW DELHI: For the first time in their cricket history, Afghanistan are going to host India in an international series this year. But the venue will be the national capital of India. TOI has learnt that plans are afoot for Afghanistan to host three T20Is against India at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Sept.An official announcement is awaited, but the matches are slated to be played on Sept 13, 16 and 19. Afghanistan are touring India for a one-off Test and three ODIs starting from June 6.TOI understands that the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) approached the Indian Cricket Board (BCCI) for a return tour. “BCCI and ACB share a good relationship. BCCI has been helping other boards like Ireland, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe by sending Indian teams to play a series there to boost the finances of those board. An understanding has been reached between BCCI and ACB in this regard. An official announcement will be made after a few modalities are completed,” a BCCI source told TOI.“The BCCI mediated an understanding between ACB the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) for availability to be the home base for Afghanistan for the series. The DDCA is also scheduling its Delhi Premier League T20 accordingly,” the source added.Afghanistan have been playing their home games in India and UAE over the last decade due to persisting geopolitical issues in Afghanistan. Previously, Afghanistan hosted Ireland in a series in Greater Noida in 2017 before hosting Bangladesh for a T20I series in Dehradun in 2018. They moved their base to UAE after that before scheduling a Test match against a full-strength New Zealand team in Greater Noida in Sept 2024. The match was abandoned without a ball being bowled due to a poor outfield after a day of rain two days before the Test. Afghanistan played their next home series in Sharjah. 131455518“The itinerary has been shared with India’s national selection committee since they have to pick a 15-member T20 team for the Asian Games in late Sept. The cricket event at Asian Games is due to start on Sept 23. The selectors will pick the team accordingly,” the BCCI source said.

Hugo Viana and Manchester City make Bournemouth inquiry over Eli Junior Kroupi
Hugo Viana and Manchester City make Bournemouth inquiry over Eli Junior KroupiMan City have contacted Bournemouth to enquire about the situation of Eli Junior KroupiPSG & Arsenal have also keenly waiting to learn Cherries’ asking price for French starBournemouth are understood to be seeking around £80M for the 19-year-oldManchester City have made contact with Bournemouth to enquire about the availability of forward Eli Junior Kroupi, as per a new report.Eli Junior Kroupi has been on Manchester City‘s radar for some time, with director of football Hugo Viana having identified the 19-year-old as one of two attacking targets for the summer window.City previously held an agent meeting over a potential move for the French teenager earlier this year, with Kroupi understood to have given the Blues the green light over a potential transfer.Eli Junior Kroupi gives Manchester City green light ahead of £80M transfer talksBournemouth are understood to be seeking around £80 million for Kroupi, who does not have a release clause in his contract running till 2030 – handing the Cherries full control of any negotiation and considerable leverage over clubs regardless of the level of interest.Report: City, PSG & Arsenal all contact BournemouthAccording to Fabrizio Romano, Manchester City have contacted Bournemouth to enquire about Kroupi‘s situation this summer, with PSG and Arsenal also calling the south coast club to establish the asking price for one of the most coveted young forwards in European football. The breadth of interest from clubs of this calibre underlines the scale of the challenge facing City in their pursuit of a player they have been tracking for months. With PSG – who have retained the UEFA Champions League title – and Budapest failures Arsenal also in the picture, Viana will need to move decisively if City are to emerge from what is shaping up to be an intensely competitive race. What is the wider context for City’s pursuit of Kroupi?City’s interest in Kroupi has been consistent throughout the season and predates the managerial change, making him one of the few transfer targets whose appeal spans both the Guardiola and Maresca eras at the Etihad Stadium.A separate pursuit of Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo earlier this year illustrated both City’s appetite for Bournemouth talent and the financial reality of dealing with a club that has shown no reluctance to command top-of-market fees.Manchester City face disappointment in chase for £100 million Premier League forwardKroupi has no release clause, Bournemouth have no obligation to sell and multiple clubs of the highest order are now circling: a combination that gives the Cherries an unusually strong hand in negotiations. At £80 million for a 19-year-old, the deal would represent one of the most significant investments in the club’s recent history. But for a player who gave City the green light months ago, the intent from the Etihad Stadium is clear.Whether they can beat PSG and Arsenal to his signature is the question that will define the next chapter of this pursuit.

Frendrup included in talks over Baldanzi’s move to Genoa
Frendrup included in talks over Baldanzi’s move to GenoaDaniele De Rossi is planning Genoa’s strategies for the summer transfer window. One of the club’s primary objectives is to retain Tommaso Baldanzi, who arrived on loan from Roma with an option to buy. The Rossoblu have an option to sign him permanently by June 15th for €10 million. Genoa’s intention, however, is clear: they want to focus on the 2003-born player while also lowering Roma’s asking price, given that the player has only been able to play nine of 18 matches due to injury. Meanwhile, the Roman club has inquired about Frendrup. To please De Rossi and sign Baldanzi, Genoa will have to weigh their wallets. Given that it would be a permanent acquisition, the Grifone will also have to consider the deals concluded between January and now, which have cost nearly €20 million. Therefore, the Rossoblu will need to raise at least €40 million to strengthen De Rossi’s squad in the coming weeks. The players who could leave Genoa are Norton-Cuffy and Frendrup. As Tuttosport reports, Roma are interested in the Danish midfielder, with whom they could develop a transfer synergy. The Giallorossi have inquired about Morten Frendrup: if the deal were to develop, it could overlap with the one for Baldanzi.

Former NFL QB shows respect to Jayden Daniels in his QB rankings
Where would you rank Jayden Daniels of the Washington Commanders among the NFL's top quarterbacks?Chris Simms, co-host of Pro Football Talk with Mike Florio, has been counting down his top 40 NFL quarterbacks over the last week. On Monday, he talked about Daniels. Simms began by saying Daniels was unhappy that Kliff Kingsbury was not retained as the Commanders' offensive coordinator. For the record, Simms ranked Daniels as his No. 9 NFL Quarterback for 2026. Commanders fans also might be interested to learn that last week, Simms named Marcus Mariota as his No. 35 quarterback in the NFL. For now, what did Simms have to say about why he was ranking Daniels as his No. 9 quarterback in the NFL?"The guys that are ranked ahead of him are no slouches, they're no slappies. But Jayden Daniels does have superstar talent.""Last year and part of his negativity is his frame, his body. Is he going to be able to stay healthy? It's something you worry about with him. I saw a picture of him at OTA's last week...Oh my gosh, man, I wish he would put a little bit more meat on his bones.""But really, as a player, there's really not much to worry about with Jayden Daniels. He does everything pretty awesome. You know the running is special. His accuracy throwing the football, he rarely misses the target. Makes all the throws, throws off of his back foot. He is an awesome decision maker.""He could be No. 3 or No. 4 next year, he has that type of talent...He's got the right approach as a quarterback and just the right touch overall to lead a football team. He never gets too high, he never gets too low.""He plays big in the pocket, he does. Even though he is frail, he is tall and can see over the linemen and make throws there when people are in his face. That's what I like."This article originally appeared on Commanders Wire: Washington Commanders: Chris Simms shows respect to Jayden Daniels

Report: Liverpool interested in move for Bundesliga forward
Report: Liverpool interested in move for Bundesliga forwardLiverpool Continue Push for Yan Diomande Despite Leipzig ResistanceLiverpool’s interest in RB Leipzig forward Yan Diomande appears genuine, but securing a deal this summer may prove far from straightforward.According to Sky Sports, via reporter Florian Plettenberg, there is growing optimism from the player’s camp regarding a move to an elite European club. However, Leipzig remain determined to keep hold of one of their most exciting young talents.Photo IMAGOPlayer Ambition Fuels Transfer TalkPlettenberg explained the situation from Diomande’s perspective, stating:“It is possible from the player side, he [Diomande] has joined the big, big agency Roc Nation Sports International, who have a very clear plan for his career and the plan is to join a special, top club already in the next transfer window and we also have to look at him in the World Cup.”Photo IMAGOThat development naturally raises Liverpool’s interest. The club have consistently targeted young players with elite potential and Diomande appears to fit that recruitment profile.Leipzig Determined to Hold FirmDespite the speculation, Leipzig are showing little desire to negotiate.“But there are two sides and on the other hand there is RB Leipzig who have the clear plan to keep him for another year, [managing director] Oliver Mintzlaff and Jurgen Klopp want to extend his contract and adjust his contract and make him into the next big thing with Leipzig.”The Bundesliga club believe patience will further increase both the player’s value and development.Reds Yet to Reach AgreementPlettenberg also revealed:“I had a call with one of Leipzig’s big bosses last [Sunday] night and they said, ‘stay relaxed, he is 100% staying.’ On the other hand, I had contact with Liverpool, who said they are pushing to sign Diomande, they want to sign him in this transfer window and they are working on a verbal agreement, but there are no agreements yet with the player or any other clubs.”For now, Liverpool’s pursuit remains active, but significant work lies ahead before any breakthrough can be achieved. Our View – EPL Index AnalysisLiverpool’s recruitment team have built a reputation for identifying elite young talent before their value explodes. Diomande appears to fall firmly into that category. The fact that Liverpool are reportedly pushing for a deal suggests they see something special in the forward. What stands out most is the confidence coming from the player’s side. Joining a major agency with ambitions of securing a move to a top club often signals that a career progression plan is already in motion. Liverpool supporters will naturally view that as a positive sign. The biggest obstacle remains Leipzig. Their stance is understandable. Clubs across Europe are increasingly reluctant to lose their brightest prospects before they have fully developed. With Jurgen Klopp now involved in a senior football role within the Red Bull structure, Leipzig’s determination to keep Diomande for at least another season carries extra weight.Liverpool fans should remain patient. The absence of an agreement means nothing is close yet. However, the fact Liverpool are actively working towards a verbal agreement suggests genuine intent. If Diomande continues his upward trajectory, this could be a transfer story that develops throughout the window rather than one resolved quickly.

Alphonso Davies gives injury update ahead of the World Cup with Canada
Alphonso Davies gives injury update ahead of the World Cup with CanadaInjured Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies has linked up with the Canadian national team ahead of the World Cup.As reported by AP, Davies ran laps before Canada's 2-0 friendly win over Uzbekistan in Alberta on Monday, but isn't quite ready to return to action yet."It feels nice to get back on the pitch and do some running. I'm happy to be home, I'm happy to be with the boys and support them, whether it's just on or off the pitch," Davies said. With Canada set to face Bosnia and Herzegovina in their World Cup opener on June 12, Davies didn't want to set any timeline for his return.“We just have to see how everything goes over the next couple days. I'll just continue my rehab, my progression, and see how I'm feeling, day by day, step by step,” he said.Canada coach Jesse Marsch stressed that Alphonso Davies shouldn't feel any pressure to rush his return."What we don't want to do is put him in a situation to suffer again and to be vulnerable again. You can imagine that he wants to build up his body and trust his body in all ways, so that he can go out and play football and do the things he loves," Marsch said, adding:"So we're going to make sure that as a staff that we do a good job of really looking at him every single day, monitoring every single day, and putting him in position to succeed, and I'm sure we will."

Fabrizio Romano has previously reported that City are determined to extend Rodri’s contract beyond next season. For now, no progress has been made on this front for the FA Cup and Carabao Cup holders. There may not be any news on this for some time. Speaking while on international duty with Spain for the upcoming World Cup, Rodri has revealed that he is solely focused on representing Spain. It seems that the questions that surround Rodri’s future will swirl for some time yet.Rodri won’t announce any decision on his future plans until after the World Cup.In an interview published by the BBC, Rodri has revealed that he won’t be making any decision on his future until after the World Cup. Manchester City are eager to extend Rodri’s contract, while Real Madrid’s interest in signing Rodri is well-known. Manchester City’s midfield general explained: “With a World Cup ahead, my responsibility is to stay focused. Anything related to my future will wait until after the World Cup.”Also, Rodri added that if there wasn’t a World Cup on the horizon, his future intentions may already be known. He added: “When a player is approaching the final stage of his contract, it’s normal for names to be mentioned. I’m very calm, I know exactly where I stand, and I’ll tell you that perhaps if there hadn’t been a World Cup, things might be different now.”Manchester City will be hoping that Rodri extends his contract and they can move forward with him.Obviously, Manchester City will not want to lose Rodri this summer or for free at the end of next season. Despite his injury issues over the past two seasons, he remains one of Manchester City’s most important players. Also, Rodri is a vital presence in Manchester City’s new era. With Bernardo Silva and John Stones having left the club, Rodri’s experience and leadership will be crucial to City.Rodri is solely focused on the World Cup for the time being. That is understandable given that Spain are one of the favorites to win the tournament. City will be hoping that following the tournament their midfield general extends his contract. That would be the dream scenario for the FA Cup and Carabao Cup holders. However, Rodri’s intentions won’t be known for some time yet.Rodri will not make any decision on his future until late in the summer. The World Cup is his sole priority. It is now expected that speculation will swirl around his future for some time yet, but this doesn’t faze Rodri, as he explained yesterday.

FC Barcelona Haven’t Forgotten About Potential Harry Kane Transfer
FC Barcelona haven't forgotten about Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane as a possible Plan B alternative to Julian Alvarez according to SPORT.Getty ImagesFC Barcelona haven't forgotten about Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane as a possible Plan B alternative to Julian Alvarez according to SPORT.After signing left winger Anthony Gordon before the weekend, Barça are now all in on Alvarez.A $116 million (€100 million) formal offer via email has already been presented to Atletico Madrid for the Argentine, who according to reports in his homeland has simultaneously given his word to the Catalans to join them on a five-year contract. It isn’t believed that Atleti will accept that offer for a player they paid ($109.5 million) €94 million for from Manchester City in 2024, however. The Argentine reports say that something between $140 million and $145.5 million (€120 and €125 million) will be required for a player that wants to move on after two trophyless seasons at the Metropolitano. FORBES | By Tom SandersonJulian Alvarez Agrees To Join Barcelona On Five-Year ContractMeanwhile there is also the threat of moneyed Champions League winner Paris Saint-Germain in the background, which could derail the operation altogether after reportedly agreeing to start formal negotiations with Atleti following the Budapest decider clinched on penalties at Arsenal’s expense on Saturday. FC Barcelona haven’t forgotten about Harry KaneAs the Alvarez saga works itself out, Barcelona haven’t forgotten about genuine Ballon d’Or candidate Harry Kane, who’s shown himself to be a world class striker still at the peak of his powers aged 32 - and none more so than in the thrilling 5-4 Champions League semifinal first leg loss to PSG for Bayern in late April.Akin to Alvarez, Kane offers the attack of any team he stars for with so much more than a goalscoring threat given the quality of his link-up play and passing. He nets far more often too, with an astonishing 61 goals in 51 appearances in 2025/2026 putting him in line to succeed former Barça winger Ousmane Dembele as the world’s greatest player in France Football’s eyes perhaps on the basis of how England fare at the World Cup.If Barça can’t land Alvarez, Kane is a genuine Plan B. He could replicate the Robert Lewandowski operation from Bayern in 2022, by leaving Bavaria to become a modern day legend in Catalonia as an athlete still in elite shape in his 30s given how seriously he’s taken his career. While Lewandowski was a bargain at $58 million (€50 million), however, Kane will cost more than that.Bayern honorary president Uli Hoeness recently roasted FC Barcelona in saying they have “no money" to land Kane. Simultaneously, SPORT’s David Bernabeu reports that an expired $76 million (€65 million) release clause the Englishman had not too long ago means the Germans will only start negotiating at $93 million (€80 million). This article was originally published on Forbes.com

What Female Athletes Need To Know About Sleep & Their Hormones
If you're a female athlete who has ever felt inexplicably off during a training block: sluggish, under-recovered, not quite yourself—there's a good chance your sleep was part of the story. And there's an equally good chance you didn't realize it.A recent study tracked 12 elite female Gaelic football players across approximately three full menstrual cycles using Oura ring data and daily sleep diaries, uncovering a perception-reality gap in how athletes experience their own sleep. The disruptions weren't random; they clustered around two specific phases of the menstrual cycle, the same phases when the body is already managing its highest symptom load.Twelve elite athletes, three months of dataResearchers recruited 12 Senior Intercounty Ladies Gaelic Football players (average age 24.2 years) and monitored them prospectively for approximately three months, aiming to capture data across three full menstrual cycles.Sleep is already a known challenge in elite sport. Athletes tend to obtain less sleep than the general population, and demanding training and competition schedules are among the most commonly cited reasons. For female athletes, the menstrual cycle adds another layer which has been relatively understudied in applied, longitudinal settings.Participants wore an Oura ring throughout the study to objectively track sleep and physiological variables. They also completed daily sleep diaries, tracked their menstrual cycle and cycle-related symptoms using a smartphone app, and estimated ovulation using urinary testing kits.Crucially, participants were blinded to their objective sleep data on the Oura app throughout the study: their subjective diary entries reflected genuine perception, not data they'd already seen. The menstrual cycle was divided into four phases for analysis: Phase 1 (menstruation), Phase 2 (mid-late follicular), Phase 3 (majority of the luteal phase), and Phase 4 (pre-menstrual, defined as the five days before the next menstruation). This four-phase framework allowed the researchers to pinpoint exactly when sleep disruptions occurred, rather than treating the cycle as a uniform backdrop.Athletes were sleeping less & waking more than they realizedParticipants' objective sleep, as measured by the Oura ring, was 55 minutes less than their subjective sleep, as reported in their daily diaries. That's nearly an hour of sleep that athletes believed they were getting but weren't. Participants also underestimated the number of times they woke during the night; objective wake events were significantly higher than subjective reports. They also underestimated the time they spent awake after falling asleep: wake after sleep onset, or WASO (a measure of how fragmented sleep is once it begins), was substantially higher in objective data than participants perceived. This matters because sleep perception shapes behavior. If an athlete believes she slept well, she's unlikely to adjust her training load, prioritize recovery, or seek support. The data suggests that for female athletes, subjective sleep reports alone are not a reliable guide to actual sleep quality, particularly during hormonally active phases of the cycle. The two highest-symptom windowsObjective sleep quality measures fluctuated across the menstrual cycle, but the disruptions weren't evenly distributed. They concentrated in Phase 1 and Phase 4.During Phase 1 (menstruation), sleep efficiency decreased, and both WASO and sleep onset latency (SOL, the time it takes to fall asleep) increased compared to other phases. In plain terms: athletes were taking longer to fall asleep, waking more during the night, and spending a smaller proportion of their time in bed actually asleep.SOL was also significantly longer in Phase 2 (mid-late follicular) compared to Phase 3, approximately 25% longer, meaning the sleep-onset difficulty didn't resolve immediately after menstruation ended.During Phase 4 (pre-menstrual), wake events were significantly higher compared to Phases 2 and 3. This is a distinct pattern from Phase 1: not a global decline in sleep quality, but a specific increase in nighttime waking in the days leading up to menstruation.Critically, the athletes themselves didn't report worse sleep during either phase. Their subjective sleep diary entries showed no significant differences across the four phases, even as their objective data told a different story during Phases 1 and 4. The objective disruptions were real; the athletes simply weren't perceiving them. It's not just the hormones: it's the symptomsThe researchers noted that the prevalence and perceived impact of cycle-related symptoms peaked in Phase 1 and Phase 4, directly coinciding with the objective sleep disruptions observed in the data. This suggests that sleep disturbances may be closely tied to the experience of symptoms (cramping, bloating, mood changes, physical discomfort) rather than to hormonal phase shifts in isolation. The pre-menstrual finding is worth highlighting because it's often underappreciated. Menstruation gets most of the attention when it comes to cycle-related performance and recovery impacts, but the days leading up to it appear to carry their own distinct sleep cost, one that, like Phase 1, goes largely unnoticed by the athletes experiencing it.This isn't unique to female athletes. Research on sleep perception more broadly has shown that people are often poor judges of their own sleep quality, particularly when disruptions are fragmented rather than dramatic.A night with multiple brief wake events may not feel like a bad night's sleep in the morning, even though the cumulative effect on recovery and cognitive function is real. Sleep doctors themselves use objective data to recalibrate after disrupted nights, a useful reminder that how you feel isn't always the full picture. This isn't just an elite athlete problemThe study focused on elite Gaelic football players, but the implications extend well beyond competitive sport. The physiological mechanisms at play, including hormonal fluctuations across the menstrual cycle, their effects on sleep architecture, and the gap between perceived and actual sleep quality, are not exclusive to elite athletes. For any active woman who tracks her training, her nutrition, or her recovery, the menstrual cycle is a variable that deserves a place in that picture. The study's authors noted that monitoring sleep and menstrual cycle characteristics may help female athletes identify timepoints where sleep may be disrupted and support them in finding mitigation strategies when disruptions occur. That framing is useful for non-elite athletes and active women too. Knowing that Phases 1 and 4 are higher-risk windows for sleep disruption means those phases can be approached proactively, rather than reactively. For active women thinking about VO2 max and performance, cycle-aware sleep tracking is one of the most underutilized tools available.Cycle-aware sleep tracking: what to actually doThe study doesn't prescribe specific interventions, but its findings point clearly toward a few practical directions.Track both sleep and cycle phase: Using a sleep tracker wearable alongside a cycle-tracking app gives you the same dual-data picture the researchers used. The Oura ring was used in this study, but any validated wearable that tracks sleep efficiency and wake events can serve a similar function.Adjust expectations during Phases 1 and 4: If you know these phases carry a higher sleep disruption risk, you can plan for it; building in more recovery time, reducing training intensity, or simply not interpreting fatigue during these windows as a fitness problem.Don't rely on how you feel: The 55-minute perception gap is a reminder that subjective sleep reports are unreliable guides to actual sleep quality. If you're using a wearable, look at the data, especially during menstruation and the days before your period.Address symptom burden directly: Since cycle-related symptoms and sleep disruptions peak together in Phases 1 and 4, managing symptoms through nutrition, movement, stress reduction, or targeted supplementation may have downstream benefits for sleep quality during those phases. The takeawayThe menstrual cycle affects sleep in ways that female athletes aren't currently detecting on their own, and the gap between what they perceive and what's actually happening is nearly an hour. The disruptions concentrate in the two phases that already carry the highest symptom load: menstruation and the five days before it. Tracking objective sleep alongside cycle phase, and knowing which windows of the month to watch most closely, is where that gap starts to close.

Liverpool coach confirms he will leave alongside Arne Slot
Liverpool coach confirms he will leave alongside Arne SlotRuben Peeters Confirms Liverpool Exit as Slot Era Comes to an EndLiverpool are preparing for significant change behind the scenes this summer, with Ruben Peeters becoming the first member of Arne Slot’s coaching team to officially confirm his departure from the club. The Belgian fitness coach arrived on Merseyside alongside Slot in 2024 after building a strong reputation during their time together at Feyenoord. His appointment was viewed as an important part of Liverpool’s new era, particularly given his track record for improving player conditioning and maintaining squad fitness. Now, following Slot’s dismissal as Liverpool head coach, Peeters has announced that his own time at the club is also coming to an end.Photo: IMAGORuben Peeters Announces Liverpool DepartureWhile Liverpool are yet to confirm the full extent of changes to the backroom staff, Ruben Peeters has already broken the silence by sharing an emotional farewell message on social media.Writing on LinkedIn, the fitness coach reflected on his two seasons at Anfield and the experiences he shared with players and colleagues during that period.Peeters wrote: “After two unforgettable seasons at Liverpool F.C, it is time to say goodbye.“Winning the Premier League together will always be a special memory and the ultimate highlight of this incredible journey. But above all, I’m grateful for two years of going to work every day with so much enthusiasm, surrounded by amazing colleagues and great people.“Thank you to everyone at Liverpool FC for the trust, support, and unforgettable moments.”His departure marks another significant chapter in Liverpool’s transition following the end of the Slot era.Injury Concerns Shaped Difficult Second SeasonWhen Ruben Peeters first arrived at Liverpool, his methods quickly earned praise. During Slot’s debut campaign, Liverpool remained largely free from major injury crises and successfully maintained momentum throughout a title-winning season. However, the second year proved far more challenging.Injuries became a recurring problem for Liverpool, disrupting consistency and limiting Slot’s options across key periods of the campaign. Questions were also raised about training intensity and physical preparation as fitness concerns mounted throughout the season. As fitness coach, Peeters inevitably found himself under scrutiny alongside the rest of Slot’s coaching staff. While it would be unfair to place responsibility for every injury issue on one individual, the growing concerns over player availability contributed to a difficult final campaign for the coaching team. In elite football, results and performance levels often dictate change, and Liverpool’s decision to move in a new direction appears to extend beyond the head coach alone.Fresh Approach Expected Under New LeadershipWith Liverpool entering a new phase, changes within the coaching structure appear inevitable.A new manager typically arrives with trusted staff members and established methods, particularly in areas such as sports science, conditioning and recovery. Fitness coaches play a crucial role in implementing a manager’s philosophy, especially when a high-intensity style of football is involved. The departure of Ruben Peeters therefore signals more than a routine staffing change. It reflects a wider reset taking place behind the scenes as Liverpool prepare for a different approach both on the training ground and on matchdays.Supporters will now watch closely to see how the club reshapes its football operations over the coming weeks.Source Report Points Towards Pablo De la Torre ArrivalAccording to the original source report from Rousing The Kop, one leading candidate is already emerging as a potential replacement for Ruben Peeters. The report states that Pablo De la Torre is expected to be strongly considered for a role within Liverpool’s new coaching structure. De la Torre previously worked alongside the incoming management team and is regarded as a trusted figure in fitness and conditioning circles.Having recently left Bournemouth after following the manager there from Rayo Vallecano, De la Torre is viewed as a natural fit should Liverpool decide to continue down that path.Whether that appointment materialises remains to be seen, but what is certain is that Ruben Peeters’ exit officially closes an important chapter of the Slot era at Liverpool. His contribution to a Premier League-winning campaign ensures he will leave with a notable achievement on his CV, even if the final season proved considerably more challenging than the first. As Liverpool begin another rebuild behind the scenes, attention will now turn to who follows Peeters through the exit door and who arrives to help shape the club’s next chapter.

Lawsuit over unpaid bills dropped against Deion Sanders' son Shilo
The law firm that sued Shilo Sanders last year over $164,000 in unpaid bills has decided to drop its lawsuit against the former Colorado football player but offered no public explanation for why.The firm of Barnes & Thornburg LLP sued Sanders last November, claiming the son of Colorado football coach Deion Sanders owed the firm $164,285 but refused to pay it despite receiving invoices for it. The firm asked a federal court in Dallas for a judgment against Shilo Sanders for that amount, plus attorneys‘ fees. But that lawsuit has been terminated, according to court filings obtained by USA TODAY Sports. The firm recently called off the lawsuit “voluntarily” and “without prejudice,” which means the firm could refile its claims against Sanders again if desired. If Sanders had paid the bills to resolve the case with a settlement, typically the case would have been dismissed “with prejudice,” meaning the firm would not be allowed to refile the same lawsuit against him.An attorney for the firm didn’t return a request for comment about why the lawsuit was dismissed voluntarily.Shilo Sanders' bankruptcy proceedings remain pendingThis lawsuit was separate from Sanders’ bankruptcy proceedings, which remain pending after he filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in October 2023 with more than $11 million in debt — almost all of it owed to John Darjean, a former security guard at Sanders’ former school in Dallas.Darjean sued Sanders in 2016, claiming Sanders assaulted him and severely injured him when he tried to confiscate his phone at school in 2015, when Shilo was 15. Darjean won a $11.89 million default judgment against him in 2022 after Sanders failed to show up for the trial. Then when Darjean moved to collect on that debt from Sanders, Sanders filed for bankruptcy to halt the debt collection efforts and to try to make the debt go away so he can get a “fresh start,” according to his attorneys.Law firm provided services related to Shilo Sanders' bankruptcyThe law firm that sued him last November said it provided Sanders services “in connection with his personal injury matter and his bankruptcy proceedings.”Before the firm called off the lawsuit, federal judge Sidney Fitzwater last month asked the firm to “demonstrate good cause” for failing to effect service on Sanders, meaning explain why it hadn’t properly notified Sanders he was being sued. The firm instead dropped the lawsuit.Darjean is fighting Sanders’ efforts to discharge the debt and is scheduled to go to trial on the matter Aug. 31. Sanders, 26, said he acted in self-defense. He was waived by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last year after finishing his final college season in 2024 as a graduate student.Follow reporter Brent Schrotenboer @Schrotenboer. Southampton coach Eckert takes blame for 'spygate'
Southampton owner Dragan Solak has stood by manager Tonda Eckert (pictured) despite the spygate scandal (Ben STANSALL)Southampton head coach Tonda Eckert issued an apology on Tuesday for orchestrating the "spygate" scandal, admitting he is responsible for "everything that has happened".Saints were thrown out of the Championship play-offs last month after admitting sending a young intern to spy on a Middlesbrough training session. The English Football League said the south-coast club were found guilty of a "deplorable" act of putting pressure on the junior member of staff to spy on Boro.In a damning verdict, the governing body said Southampton boss Eckert authorised the spying. The German, 33, has now put out a lengthy video statement on club media, which began: "I will try to be as honest and clear as I can be."For everything that has happened, I do want to apologise and I hold my hand up because as head coach I am responsible."I am responsible for everything that has happened at this football club."Southampton owner Dragan Solak said he was standing by Eckert. The Serbian media mogul admitted Eckert had made a "mistake", but was adamant it should not cost a "super-talented manager" his job.Solak told the BBC: "I have to believe, honestly, and I believe Tonda, that he didn't know it was the rule that he was breaking."He added: "My personal opinion, and the opinion of the board, is that he is a manager who deserves to be backed by us and to be supported by us."I think he deserves a second chance and I would give it to him. My first support would be behind him, actually, because I think he is a super-talented manager."Southampton will also be docked four points next season after admitting to multiple breaches of regulations related to the "unauthorised filming of other clubs' training" sessions.Eckert is not yet totally out of the woods as the Football Association (FA) has launched a probe into the affair and could still charge him -- meaning he may face a ban if found guilty.Solak, though, believes that Eckert has been subjected to "a witch-hunt" and the club has been "over-sentenced"."My support comes from a very simple legal situation where there is no double jeopardy," said Solak."Whatever crime you did, you can be sentenced only once."Middlesbrough, who lost to Southampton in the play-off semi-finals, were reinstated for the final at Wembley on May 23 but were defeated by Hull, who will join Coventry and Ipswich in the Premier League next year.jw/pi

After the Trump DOJ Halted Police Reform, This City Stepped In. Then Officers Shot and Killed Katelyn Hall.
Community leaders and civil rights advocates say that one year into Louisville, Kentucky's attempts at police reform, the efforts have yielded mixed results. Jon Cherry for ProPublica Last May, as President Donald Trump settled into his second term, the Justice Department walked away from federal efforts to reform troubled police departments across the country. Officials announced their decision to not only drop lawsuits against two cities for unconstitutional policing but also retract findings of abuse in a half dozen other places. Some of those jurisdictions celebrated the news. But not Louisville, Kentucky, a blue city in a red state whose elected leaders used the occasion to make their own announcement. After the federal withdrawal, Mayor Craig Greenberg said Louisville would be “moving ahead rapidly” with reforms to its police department, which had been found to have a pattern of unconstitutional policing. In fact, the city would be adopting a version of the reform agreement Louisville had previously negotiated with the Biden administration and hiring an outside monitor to oversee its progress. “I made a promise to our community,” the mayor said, “and we are keeping that promise.” There was much to do. In 2023, federal investigators had found that the city’s police routinely discriminated against Black residents, inappropriately used police dogs against people, and failed to properly respond to people facing mental health challenges. The mayor said the local reform plan would allow city leaders to correct these problems and accomplish key goals, perhaps even faster than he outlined. But police records obtained by ProPublica show just how entrenched the issues were. Two years after the DOJ revealed its initial findings, while the Greenberg administration was charting its path to reform in early 2025, officers were still engaging in the problematic policing practices called out by federal investigators, according to the records. Most notably, police officials were failing to thoroughly review officers’ use of force. Today, one year into the city’s reform effort, community leaders and civil rights advocates say the results have been mixed. For example, the city has expanded a pilot program to direct some mental health calls away from police and send them instead to mental health specialists. Yet a panel created to review the department’s mental health practices overall only met for the first time in March, almost a year after it was announced, and it isn’t scheduled to issue recommendations for another year. “What we do as a city, we make things look good on paper, but then in the application of it, it plays out so differently,” said Shameka Parrish-Wright, a Louisville city council member and a candidate for mayor looking to unseat Greenberg later this year. “And what plays out on the ground in day-to-day interactions is different.” Underscoring the stakes for Louisville residents is the March fatal shooting of a 28-year-old woman named Katelyn Hall, who was experiencing a mental health crisis when police gunned her down in her own apartment. Experts in mental health told ProPublica that the incident is emblematic of practices flagged by the Justice Department more than three years ago. Louisville Metro Police Department Chief Paul Humphrey, however, said the department should not be judged by one shooting given that it responded to 3,200 mental health calls last year and “only about eight resulted in any injury to anyone.” The incident is still under investigation. Louisville police killed 28-year-old Katelyn Hall after responding to a call at her apartment, where she was experiencing a mental health crisis. Louisville Metro Police Department In the aftermath of the killing, Greenberg’s office is exploring ways to pair mental health professionals with police in such situations — an idea that, critics note, was explicitly recommended in 2023 by the Justice Department. Today, the city sends either mental health professionals or police to calls, but does not have them respond together on critical incidents, including when a weapon is present. Greenberg declined multiple requests for interviews, but his press secretary, Matt Mudd, defended the reform work, which he said was now being overseen by an independent monitor. “The Louisville Metro Police Department is in a much better place than it was three years ago,” he told ProPublica in an email. “That work is ongoing, and we are partnering closely with the community to ensure progress continues.” Humphrey, the police chief, noted that police reform can often take years to achieve under federal oversight. By comparison, Humphrey told ProPublica, “I think we’re going at a really good clip.” Today, the city stands as a test case for how effectively a community can implement police reform without a court order and the accountability that comes with federal intervention. “There’s no enforceability by law,” said Ed Harness, Louisville’s first-ever inspector general. He is charged with investigating misconduct in the police department. “Now whether reform can happen voluntarily, with compliance and supervision by elected leaders, kind of is the question that will be answered in Louisville.” Louisville’s inspector general, Ed Harness, is charged with investigating misconduct in the police department. Jon Cherry for ProPublica The Path to Reform Policing in Louisville has been under a national microscope since March 2020, when plainclothes officers broke down the door of Breonna Taylor’s apartment serving a no-knock search warrant. Her boyfriend thought they were robbers and fired a single shot at them. Taylor, a 26-year-old Black medical worker, was killed as police returned fire. Her case, along with that of George Floyd in Minneapolis, helped spark a national reckoning over race and policing, and attracted the scrutiny of the Justice Department. In 2023, just months after Greenberg took office, the DOJ published a scathing report on the police department’s pattern of misconduct and constitutional violations. By December 2024, the city and the DOJ announced the details of a court agreement, known as a consent decree, that would set requirements for improvements and be overseen by an outside monitor and a judge. Greenberg touted the city’s commitment to “aggressively implement police reform.” In the following months, however, the questionable police behavior continued. Police records first obtained by the American Civil Liberties Union and later by ProPublica through a public records request detail nearly 50 use-of-force incidents from December 2024 through April 2025. In more than half of them, officers engaged in actions that the Justice Department had noted in 2023 were either violations of people’s rights, like using choke holds and allowing police dogs to continue biting people who no longer posed a threat, or otherwise needed improvement, like how supervisors reviewed such incidents. In one case, a suspect spit on an officer, who then performed a “takedown” of the man while he was already in handcuffs. In another, multiple witnesses said an officer put his knee on a man’s back while he lay on the ground, a tactic that has been widely condemned since George Floyd was murdered by a Minneapolis police officer who pressed his knee on Floyd’s neck in 2020. In both those instances, as well as others, the department’s internal review unit found the uses of force to be appropriate. According to the records, the review unit failed to discuss alternative approaches or completely review all uses of force by the officers involved. Jenn Rolnick Borchetta, the deputy project director for the ACLU’s Criminal Law Reform Project, said her team requested the records in Louisville and six other jurisdictions to assess whether they corrected the problems flagged by the DOJ in its investigations. In Louisville, she said her organization expected oversight to be extra diligent given the DOJ’s criticism of what it called “biased” internal investigations. “We were troubled by a review process that seemed more concerned with protecting the agency from liability than with protecting the public from further abuse,” she said. The Louisville police department did not respond to ProPublica’s inquiry about the records and the use-of-force review process. Last May, just five months after the consent decree was signed, Harmeet Dhillon, head of the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division, announced the department was dropping the case against Louisville, ending what she called the “failed experiment of handcuffing local leaders and police departments with factually unjustified consent decrees.” The Hall of Justice in Louisville Jon Cherry for ProPublica Questions Over City’s Commitment The same day, Greenberg unveiled his administration’s reform plan, dubbed the Community Commitment, and pledged to hire an independent monitor to oversee the police department’s progress. The document carried over much of the federal reform plan, but civil rights advocates and community leaders noticed it differed in key ways. Most notably, it had no mechanism for enforcement in the event of a disagreement between the monitor and the police department. Under a federal consent decree, a federal judge makes the final decisions on such disputes and can force departments to implement corrective actions. Louisville’s plan simply calls for the parties to have continued talks. That makes the policy initiative vulnerable to the vagaries of politics or local budgeting, critics say. “That’s the biggest risk here, that it will just prove to be too difficult, too expensive, not politically advantageous for this or subsequent administrations to continue this effort,” said Christy Lopez, a professor at Georgetown Law who spent years investigating police misconduct for the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division. “That is one advantage that consent decrees offer, that they have the oversight and threat of a federal judge, who can make contempt findings if people are not doing what they said they would do. You don’t have that here.” Because of that, several community leaders want to enshrine key parts of the agreement in local law. “We need an ordinance that makes sure the reforms from the consent decree are done regardless of administration,” said Kungu Njuguna, a lifelong resident of Louisville and a policy strategist for the Kentucky ACLU. Louisville resident and Kentucky ACLU policy strategist Kungu Njuguna believes the city needs an ordinance to enshrine police reforms. Jon Cherry for ProPublica Ericka Seward, a community activist who has been campaigning for police accountability since Taylor’s killing in 2020, said the current reform plan requires residents to trust the police to make change — a difficult task, she said, given the department’s history of discriminatory policing. Seward, who is Black, said she watched officers manhandle her 21-year-old son in the parking lot of his apartment complex in 2022. He had called her during a traffic stop for what police said was erratic driving, and she drove to the location. After patting him down, officers were about to let him go with a warning when he argued that the stop was dubious and told the officers he would be complaining to members of the department’s leadership who his mother knew through her work as an activist, Seward said. The officers then physically pulled him back to their car and told him they were now going to issue him tickets, she said. Her son was cited for careless driving and failure to signal. “It was scary to me, it was scary to him,” Seward said. “Because we know what they’re capable of.” Seward filed a complaint with the city inspector general’s office. According to its report, the lead officer defended his actions, telling investigators that, because Seward’s son was accusing him of not having a valid reason for the stop, he “became concerned and wanted to document the stop to show that he did have probable cause.” While Harness’ office found no wrongdoing on that count, it did note that the officer couldn’t say how fast Seward’s son was driving. It also found that the department did not have a policy prohibiting retaliation and recommended that one be adopted, according to records. The department has since done so, though that too has drawn criticism from Harness’ office, which said its recommendation was “largely ignored.” The revised policy only applies to retaliation after a complaint has been filed, the inspector general’s report said, meaning it does not cover retaliatory policing in response to “citizens’ words, actions or demeanor.” In its 2023 investigation, the Justice Department found that Louisville police officers had “threatened and retaliated against civilian complainants.” It also found that Black drivers were nearly twice as likely as white drivers to be cited by police for minor violations — part of a pattern of discriminatory policing that investigators said often led to unnecessary and tense interactions between police and the public, sometimes resulting in arrest. The DOJ noted racial disparities in enforcement for loitering, littering and having dark window tinting. The federal consent decree dictated that those kinds of offenses receive warnings unless an officer could articulate why that approach was “insufficient” to deal with the issue. That change, however, is not in the city’s reform plan. Humphrey said that leaders determined the measure wasn’t in the best interest of the city or its officers. He also said police are trained on how to best determine the right course of action on those low-level infractions. Rebecca Hall, mother of Katelyn Hall, who was killed by police, with Dash, Katelyn’s emotional support dog Jon Cherry for ProPublica A Mental Health Crisis, a Deadly Encounter The city did incorporate into its plan many of the DOJ’s recommendations for handling people with mental health issues. Such incidents made up nearly a quarter of the use-of-force cases investigators reviewed, according to the federal report, “and a large share of those incidents involved at least one unreasonable use of force.” The city’s plan included a number of measures, starting with the formation of a behavioral health council to review incidents and recommend changes to policies and practices with the goal of “reducing the number of police encounters with people with behavioral health disabilities involving unnecessary use of force and reducing the severity of the force when force is required.” The council, however, didn’t have its first meeting until March — about 10 months after the mayor’s announcement. Police officials told ProPublica that city leaders decided to first hire the independent monitor and develop an implementation plan before putting the behavioral council to work. Four days after the group had its first meeting, Louisville police responded to a 911 call about Katelyn Hall, the 28-year-old woman in mental health crisis. She had locked herself in the bathroom and, according to her roommate, had cut her wrists and ingested cleaning fluids, and was behaving erratically. She had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and had previously attempted suicide. Within 13 minutes of their arrival, police shot and killed her. Rebecca Hall shows the last text messages she received from her daughter before Katelyn was killed by Louisville police. Jon Cherry for ProPublica “No one wants to see an outcome like this,” Humphrey said in early April during a press conference. “We have already begun to use this incident to work on improving how we handle these situations. We owe that to everyone involved and to the city.” But mental health and law enforcement experts who reviewed police body camera footage of the incident told ProPublica that officers demonstrated some of the same problematic behaviors first identified by the Justice Department more than three years ago. The federal investigators found Louisville officers “frequently fail to give people experiencing crisis time or space” and “do not engage in verbal de-escalation for enough time to be successful.” In fact, officers often made the situation more tense and confrontational, which would lead to “increased safety risks to themselves and the person in crisis and increased the likelihood of the use of force.” In Hall’s case, the officers started out asking questions like, “What’s going on?” and, “Can you talk to me?” while Hall screamed at them to let her die. Police spent about six minutes talking with her before a member of the Emergency Medical Services unit, worried that Hall had cut her wrists, suggested forcing the door open. The team spent the next three minutes breaking the door’s lock and popping one of its hinges, during which time the officers pushed themselves against the door attempting to get into the bathroom. Sharon Gandarilla-Javier, an assistant professor of police science at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, called it a “damned if you do, damned if you don’t” situation, but stressed that the six minutes of discussion wasn’t enough time and the police should have considered alternatives to forcing the door open. For example, Hall’s mother, Rebecca, was on scene and identified herself to first responders, assuming they would ask her to help talk with her daughter. They never did. Mariela Ruiz-Angel, the director of alternative response initiatives for Georgetown Law’s Center for Innovations in Community Safety, said Hall’s mother could have been a “game changer.” “We’ve used that tactic multiple times to try to find the loved one that makes the most sense, to be like, ‘Hey, I’m here, Mama’s here,’” she said. At one point, an officer tells Hall, “I want you to live,” and that her friends and family are worried about her. The responders designated which officers would use their hands, a Taser and a firearm in preparation for Hall’s exit from the locked room. But Gandarilla-Javier, who spent more than 10 years as a New York Police Department officer and teaches classes on trauma-informed policing and crisis intervention, told ProPublica that the plan overheard on the video needed to be more detailed, with an explicit discussion about how to safely subdue Hall if she were to advance on them. When Hall ultimately opened the door and walked toward the officers, she was holding a broken piece of toilet. Within five seconds, she was shot by two officers, including the one who minutes before had told her he wanted her to live. Had the officers planned better, the outcome may have been different, Gandarilla-Javier said. Louisville Metro Police Deputy Chief Emily McKinley told reporters in April that “each encounter poses a unique and often chaotic challenge,” and that in the Hall case, “If you look at the porcelain, I think it could be an extremely lethal situation” for the officers. Asked whether officers could have instead tackled Hall, she declined to answer, saying such questions would be part of the investigation into the shooting. Hall’s mother said police could have done more. “My daughter deserved more than eight minutes of their time,” Rebecca Hall said through tears in an interview. “She needed kindness and she needed somebody back there” to let her know that they cared. Hall continued: “She didn’t get that in that moment. I know she definitely didn’t need bullets. … She just needed help.” Mental health advocates like Khalilah Collins have been pushing for years for the department to allow mental health professionals to lead the response to such calls. In fact, she was part of a group of professionals who, at the city’s request, researched alternative responses in 2021. The study was part of the reforms that the city pledged to undertake in a lawsuit settlement after Taylor’s killing, but a nonpolice response failed to win the support of city leaders and wasn’t adopted. “We refuse to build what we need for people,” Collins said. “We don’t want the police there. The police don’t want to be there. They’re not trained to be there, but we refuse to do anything else.” To be sure, the department did create a program to divert some calls to mental health professionals, but that did not happen in this case because police determined Hall was “armed with glass.” Louisville police policy dictates that if a weapon is present, mental health professionals cannot respond to the calls. In the wake of Hall’s death, though, Greenberg and Humphrey say they are now exploring whether police and mental health professionals should be allowed to respond together. According to Mudd, the mayor’s spokesperson, one option being discussed involves using “new technology, like cameras, to add behavioral health providers to situations that require their expertise without potentially sacrificing their safety.” When ProPublica asked Mudd if there was a timeline for making a decision, he said only that the city and the police department were “moving with urgency.” The post After the Trump DOJ Halted Police Reform, This City Stepped In. Then Officers Shot and Killed Katelyn Hall. appeared first on ProPublica.

Trade Myles Garrett? The Cleveland Browns are nuts. And suckers | Opinion
There’s a perfect explanation for trading away Myles Garrett, pretty much the closest thing to Reggie White in today’s NFL: The Cleveland Browns are nuts.So what, that the Browns got a serious rising star in Jared Verse and three draft picks – including a first-rounder in 2027 – from the L.A. Rams in return. Is that all?The blockbuster last summer that sent Micah Parsons from the Cowboys to the Packers, people, was supposed to represent the market floor. Dallas got two first-round picks and D-tackle Kenny Clark in sending Micah packing.Compared to that deal, the Browns hardly got enough for Myles, who routinely drew triple-teams and still set the NFL single-season record in 2025 with 23 sacks and won his second Defensive Player of the Year award in three years. I mean, start the bidding at three No. 1’s. Plus Verse. And remember, those draft picks have to become draft hits. And with the Rams undeniably in a championship mix, the most premium pick figures to be way at the bottom of the first round.Yet the bombshell on Monday underscores exactly why one team, the Rams, has been hunting for Super Bowl crowns for the better part of a decade and the other one hasn’t sniffed a championship in several decades. The Browns, who last won an NFL crown with Jim Brown in 1964, are one of four teams that have never played in a single Super Bowl.In a weird way, that made Cleveland the perfect suckers – uh, trade partner – for L.A.Yep, the Rams are “all-in” to host another Super Bowl at SoFi Stadium, and the already buffed bid just got a whole lot stronger with Garrett, 30, as new centerpiece of the defense. Somewhere, Deacon Jones (RIP), the Rams legend of “Fearsome Foursome” fame who coined the term “sack” is giving some poor sap a head slap.Rams swing for the fences, Browns do the oppositeThis is how the Rams do it with their aggressive GM Les Snead and creatively hyped coach Sean McVay. They push the envelope, swing for the fences, shoot for the moon. The Browns, meanwhile, always seem to be on the verge of ABC: Another Bad Creation. This is the dysfunctional franchise that kicked Baker Mayfield to the curb and traded for Deshaun Watson and gave him a fully guaranteed contract – despite the PR minefield that involved allegations of sexual misconduct by two dozen massage therapists. It’s the franchise that drafted “Johnny Football” Manziel (and before that in the same first round, cornerback bust Justin Gilbert), and way back in 1999 picked Tim Couch over Donovan McNabb. One year, the Browns passed on drafting Julio Jones with the sixth pick overall and traded down for a package of picks that produced nothing special while the receiver went on the produce a Hall of Fame resume. The franchise also served up since-departed chief strategy office, Paul DePodesta, whose “Moneyball” concepts from his Oakland A’s days didn’t quite cut it in the NFL.And now they’ve traded away a generational talent that they had the good fortune of drafting No. 1 overall in 2017. Stockpiling for the future provides options, but no guarantees.Browns history of gloom continuesSo, if you’re wondering why Jimmy and Dee Haslam are probably among the most heavily criticized owners in the NFL, there are the results. Zero division titles. A 5-12 finish in 2025. A revolving door of GMs, HCs and QBs.Sure, they’ve tried it a lot of different ways. Todd Monken is the 11th head coach (excluding interims) since the franchise was reborn as an expansion team in 1999, and last season Shedeur Sanders became the 41st quarterback to start for the so-called “Brownies” during that span. On top of all the coaches, including one-and-done stints from Freddie Kitchens and Rod Cudzinski, and Hue Jackson’s 3-36-1 disaster, the Browns have had 10 GMs since the 1999 reboot, including one, Ray Farmer, who violated NFL rules by sending text messages to the sideline from the press box, Ray Farmer and is now, incidentally, a personnel exec with the Rams.Of course, you can’t put the Browns’ long history of gloom on Monken, and only so much has come under GM Andrew Berry’s watch.Still, it’s the Browns. It’s no wonder that Garrett came out last year and went public with a trade demand, selling it as a championship mission. The Browns responded by signing Garrett to a 4-year, $160 million extension that made him the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history. Money talks. Or lowers the volume. While Garrett had another monster season to go with the fat contract, that championship chase was certainly on hold – until now. Berry has always maintained that he saw Garrett as a Browns lifer, but that’s out the window now.More: Why the Browns traded Myles Garrett after once being adamantly against itHistory not on Browns sideThat the Browns reportedly restructured the payouts of the option bonuses of Garrett’s contract, allowing the $41 million in dead money to be spread over two years, was apparently the type of tweak that would facilitate a trade. And taking his $40-mil-per-year off the books looks good on paper, too.Maybe that seems sensible for a chapter in some “NFL Moneyball” book, where the equations can be highlighted by color-coded graphs. It’s just that some things about the NFL’s best defensive end that cannot easily translate on paper with analytics.Sure, barring divine intervention, the Browns won’t be in the Super Bowl running this season. They’ve got more ammo to use in the future, and with so many wanting to dismiss Sanders for the role, maybe they’ll pursue another “franchise quarterback.”Blah, blah, blah. We’ll see.The Browns have drafted well recently, including the second-round selection last year of linebacker Carson Schwesinger, who won NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year honors. Yet to win this deal, the Browns need a few more 10’s on the picks they’ve just received, while Verse fulfills his potential and becomes one of the NFL’s best edge rushers.Yes, it’s possible. But these are the Browns. History is not on their side.Garrett is gone, igniting his championship mission on a new team built for winning big. Too bad he can't take the Browns' misery with him.Contact Bell at jbell@usatoday.com or follow on X: @JarrettBellThis article originally appeared on USA TODAY: The Browns were nuts to trade Myles Garrett, the latest in decades of bad moves

Barcelona admire Manchester City mainstay, could make a move if a defender leaves – reportFC Barcelona have fully shifted their focus on trying to secure the signing of Julian Alvarez of Atletico Madrid after signing Anthony Gordon. At the same time, though, the Catalans continue to monitor the market for potential targets to reinforce other positions in the squad.Josko Gvardiol very well-liked at BarcelonaIn that regard, journalist Alex Pintanel of RAC1 reports that Barcelona highly admire Manchester City and Croatia centre-back Josko Gvardiol.Josko Gvardiol is well-liked at Barcelona. (Photo by Alex Pantling/Getty Images)The Blaugrana have had him on their radars and have kept themselves up-to-date with the 24-year-old’s situation at the Etihad Stadium. And, in case there is a departure from the current defensive unit, Barcelona could activate the option of moving for Gvardiol in the summer. At the same time, however, the reigning La Liga champions will not ‘go crazy’ for his signing and only consider it if they feel the operation is feasible.Gvardiol, who has a contract at Manchester City until, has left the door open for a summer departure, in case Barça or Real Madrid make a move.A new centre-back no longer a priorityFor a long while, when Barcelona were pursuing Alessandro Bastoni, it appeared that the signing of a new centre-back, preferably a left-footed one, was a priority for the summer. The top priority for now. (Photo by Eric Alonso/Getty Images)However, the situation has shifted since, with Hansi Flick & co. making it their utmost priority to sign a top-quality striker first. Considerations are being made about a move for a new full-back as well, especially in case Jules Kounde or Alejandro Balde leave in the coming window. So, as things stand, a move for Gvardiol does not seem like a major priority for Barcelona unless there is a defensive exit.

For the Prout boys tennis team, the wait was worth it. Here's why.
EAST PROVIDENCE (and PAWTUCKET) – The Prout boys tennis team waited one year for its chance at redemption. The Crusaders had the patience to wait another 24 hours. After losing last season’s Division II championship match, Prout wasn’t sure what 2026 would bring but was ready to get revenge. Returning to Slater Park to play North Smithfield in the D-II title match on Sunday, the Crusaders were on the cusp of a title before Mother Nature decided they’d have to wait another day.Monday, Prout made the long drive to East Providence High School, warmed up, and some 20 minutes later, finished what it started. Alex Demos and Jack Paiva closed out their match at No. 2 doubles to earn the clinching point in the Crusaders’ 4-1 win over the Northmen, claiming the program’s fourth championship.“We felt like we should and could [win] and that was the messaged conveyed the first day of practice,” Prout No. 2 Luke Cavanagh said. “We were coming for the championship and we were going to win it.”The Crusaders were the No. 1 seed in the 2025 Division II Tournament, but lost to Narragansett, 4-3, in the final. That loss fed Prout all season long. The Crusaders earned some revenge with a 4-3 win over the Mariners in the second match of the season, but saw their undefeated season end when Narragansett took home a 4-3 win on May 5.“I was really upset about that loss and at first, the team was too,” Demos said. “After a few days coming back from it, we were ready to play even harder.”“It was a good thing. It’s a lot harder to cap off an undefeated season than one where we have a loss,” Cavanagh said. “Overall, a loss was necessary for us to bounce back from.”Prout had eyes on a rematch, but it never came. North Smithfield played the role of spoiler in the semifinals, upsetting Narragansett and earning its spot in the final two years after winning a Division III title of its own.“It was definitely a shock when we found out,” Paiva said. “This team we knew they were a good team. We beat them 4-3, but a lot of people were missing because of vacation.“We had to practice like it was a new team we hadn’t faced before and remember to have fun, because if you’re not having fun in tennis it doesn’t matter how many championships you win.”The match was originally scheduled for Saturday, but the weather forced a postponement to Sunday. The skies were clear at Slater Park when the teams arrived, but the match started late after East Greenwich’s win over Barrington in the State Championship ran long.Prout got off to the start it wanted and led 2-1, with two matches one game away from clinching the title. Then the rains came, forcing a postponement of the match and a change of site with Slater Park booked for a men’s tennis league on Monday. Both teams arrived at East Providence well ahead of the 4:30 scheduled start and play was started early.Cavanagh led 6-4, 5-3 but was down 0-40. After dead shanking a shot on his first point, Cavanagh fell behind North Smithfield’s Tim Ferri 15-40 before battling back to close out his match, 6-4, 6-4, earning the third point.“It was really annoying to say the least that we had to pause,” Cavanagh said. “Basically, we were thinking to ourselves that we’ve got his and we have to come and bring our game one more day.”Prout’s No. 1 doubles team of Wilson Babij and Brady Kopka were on the cusp of victory up 6-4, 5-4, but North Smithfield’s Chase Nelson and Ben Wallbillich evened the second set off by finishing the paused game from the day before. That set the stage for Demos and Paiva. The duo got off to a rough start Sunday, dropping the first set to Carter Hawes and Cody Roy before taking the second. Up 2-6, 6-1, 3-1 coming into Monday, Demos and Paiva found the momentum they left in Pawtucket and used it to close out the final set, 6-2, to earn the clinching point.“We had a lot of energy and we were really excited [Sunday],” Demos said. “Honestly, I was a little worried we weren’t going to be able to keep that because we started a little slow [Sunday]. We came back and kept the same intensity and that took us all the way.”North Smithfield didn’t show up to Slater Park intending to lose and didn’t make the second trip to East Providence ready to give up. While things didn’t go the Northmen’s way, it’s clear the program is in good shape and with a young roster, will be ready to come back even better next season.“It was just great. Everyone played their hearts out there,” North Smithfield No. 1 Nate Tremblay said. “Practices, everyone showed up every day and worked on what we needed to do just to get to this.“ … We came into the season not knowing we’d be a playoff team, to be honest. We didn’t know what we had, what our competition would be because a lot had changed.”The falling of the final point should have been an emotional release, but it was a touch on the quiet side. But maybe that’s what happens after you have to wait an extra 24 hours after already waiting a year.“I thought my serve was out, but apparently it was in and when I found out it was just different,” Demos said. “It felt amazing to know we were the champions and we reigned supreme.”“The 24 hours did kind of subdue things, but this is something that’s going to last forever,” Cavanagh said. “Even if that moment wasn’t that loud, we’ll have this memory to look back on.”2026 RIIL D-II Tennis ChampionshipProut 4, North Smithfield 1Singles: 1, Nico Testa, P, def. Texas A&M should not retain a key staff member heading into 2027
Texas A&M is officially eliminated from the NCAA Tournament after falling to USC 7-1 in the College Station Regional Final on Monday night, ending the season at 41-16. While junior closer Clayton Freshcorn made his first start of the season, he was clearly left in the game too long after allowing a three-run home run that virtually ended the game, and the Aggies' bounce-back season. For second-year coach Michael Earley, his future is likely secure after leading the Aggies to the postseason, but the way the Aggies lost over the last two games is an indictment of his decision-making. Star hitters Gavin Grahovac, Caden Sorrell, and Chris Hacopian all struggled in the final two games, which falls back on Earley, who also serves as the program's hitting coach. Still, it's clear as day that the Aggies need to make a change on the staff, as second-year pitching coach Jason Kelly should be directly blamed for the lack of development on the starting staff and several bullpen players, and while you cannot blame Kelly for injury issues that plagued the pitching depth early in the season, the performances, outside of sophomore Aiden Sims, did not match the talent level. The best examples of this are junior LHP Shane Sdao, who, after returning from injury, finished the year with a 6.85 ERA, while Weston Moss, despite his career performance on Saturday, ended with a 5.46 ERA and allowed a combined 33 home runs.Yes, Clayton Freshcorn's 2.27 ERA and 51 strikeouts were impressive, and his Monday performance deserves immense praise, but one successful pitcher should not be enough to justify Kelly's retention. If Michael Earley is serious about making it back to the NCAA Tournament and advancing past the Regional Round, changes are needed.Texas A&M's top four pitchers (Shane Sdao, Weston Moss, Aiden Sims, Gavin Lyons) allowed a combined 173 runs, 291 hits, and 78 walks this season. Early works begin on Brisbane’s 2032 Olympic stadium at Victoria Park
Early works for Brisbane’s new Olympic stadium at Victoria Park have begun, the Games Independent Infrastructure and Coordination Authority (GIICA) confirmed on 1 June 2026. GIICA has taken possession of the site to start preparatory activities that will lead to the construction of the venue, which is set to host the opening and closing ceremonies, as well as athletics events, during the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. According to the authority, these early activities represent a significant step forward in the development of key sporting venues for Brisbane. Brisbane's Olympic stadium will seat 63,000 spectators and can host up to 70,000 for concerts. After the Games, it is expected to become the city’s main venue for sports and entertainment. The authority stated that delivery of the project remains on schedule, with design work progressing and the Early Contractor Involvement process under way. A recent referral under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act was deemed “not a controlled action” in May, meaning no further Commonwealth environmental approvals are currently required for the precinct. The contract for Brisbane's Olympic stadium’s early works is expected to be awarded in the coming months. Major earthworks are scheduled to begin between late 2026 and early 2027. Initial works starting this month will focus on site preparation. This includes ongoing investigations, early enabling tasks, partial demolition of existing infrastructure, and setting up construction zones on the Herston side of the park. As these works progress, GIICA has confirmed a series of changes affecting traffic and public access in the area. Several sections of Victoria Park on the Herston side have been closed off and fenced to create designated construction zones. Access points from both the Herston and Kelvin Grove busway stations have also been shut. In addition, Gilchrist Avenue is now closed to public vehicles, and the North Brisbane Bikeway has been diverted via a minor re-route. Visitors in the area can expect temporary traffic management and increased signage to support safe movement around the site. Only three players have achieved this rare IPL three-peat - and two are from RCB
NEW DELHI: Royal Challengers Bengaluru on Sunday lifted their second Indian Premier League title, defeating Gujarat Titans by five wickets in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The victory saw several records being created, including RCB becoming only the third franchise in IPL history to successfully defend their title after Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians.Amid all the celebrations and milestones, one remarkable record went largely unnoticed.RCB's Phil Salt and Suyash Sharma became part of an exclusive three-member club by completing a rare IPL title hat-trick. The duo won the IPL title with Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024 before adding successive trophies with RCB in 2025 and 2026.They joined Karn Sharma as the only players in IPL history to win three consecutive titles as players. Karn achieved the feat by winning with Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2016, Mumbai Indians in 2017 and Chennai Super Kings in 2018, becoming the first cricketer to complete an IPL title hat-trick.Salt, who was bought by RCB for Rs 11.50 crore at the IPL 2025 auction, was a member of the Kolkata Knight Riders squad that won the 2024 title under Shreyas Iyer. However, KKR released him after the season. A fierce bidding battle followed between KKR and RCB at the IPL 2025 auction before Bengaluru secured the England wicketkeeper-batter's services. The 29-year-old now has three consecutive IPL titles to his name. Salt featured in six matches during IPL 2026, scoring 202 runs at a strike rate of 168.33.Across 40 IPL matches, Salt has scored 1,258 runs at a remarkable strike rate of 174.48, including 12 half-centuries.Suyash, meanwhile, was acquired by RCB for Rs 2.60 crore at the IPL 2025 auction. The young leg-spinner enjoyed a decent IPL 2026 campaign, taking nine wickets in 12 matches while maintaining an economy rate of 9.21.Overall, Suyash has claimed 27 wickets in 39 IPL matches at an average of 44.07.Most IPL titles by a playerThe list of players with the most IPL titles is dominated by some of the tournament's biggest names. Rohit Sharma and Ambati Rayudu lead the chart with six trophies each. Rohit won his first title with Deccan Chargers in 2009 before becoming a cornerstone of Mumbai Indians' dynasty, helping the franchise win five more titles between 2013 and 2020. Rayudu, meanwhile, won three titles with Mumbai Indians and another three with Chennai Super Kings.A group of six players share second place with five IPL titles each — MS Dhoni, Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, Kieron Pollard, Aditya Tare and Krunal Pandya. Dhoni's five titles have all come with Chennai Super Kings, while Bumrah and Pollard were integral members of Mumbai Indians' championship-winning sides.Hardik Pandya won four titles with Mumbai Indians before leading Gujarat Titans to glory in 2022.Krunal Pandya is the latest entrant into the five-title club after winning back-to-back IPL crowns with RCB in 2025 and 2026, adding to the three trophies he won with Mumbai Indians.Several other IPL stalwarts have four titles each, including Harbhajan Singh, Karn Sharma, Suresh Raina, Lasith Malinga and Ravindra Jadeja. However, when it comes to winning three consecutive IPL titles as a player, Salt, Suyash and Karn stand alone. FC Barcelona Beat Real Madrid And Manchester City To Top Young Talent
FC Barcelona have beaten Manchester City and Real Madrid to one of Catalan youth football's emerging stars.VisionhausFC Barcelona have beaten heavyweight rivals such as Real Madrid and Manchester City to breakout teenage talent Enzo Perez according to SPORT, which cited anonymous sources.Perez was originally on La Masia’s books from 2020 to 2023, after being scouted and signed from Sant Cugat in the Catalan capital’s mountainous northwestern suburbs. It’s at Girona where the youngster has kicked on, however, with Perez playing a pivotal role in a surprise U-14 title win this term.Catalonia’s prestigious Divisió d’Honor (Honor Division) pits the autonomous region’s best clubs against one another, which includes the acadamies of FC Barcelona and Espanyol plus renowned developers of youth talent Damm which oversaw Joan Garcia’s trajectory. With Perez a protagonist in Girona clinching what is regarded as one of the world’s toughest youth championships, it’s no surprise that the midfielder has attracted interest across Europe.Perez looks set to return to FC BarcelonaGiven Girona belongs to the Manchester City Group, the Etihad giants wanted Perez to continue with its Catalan arm before then heading north to England upon turning 18 as per FIFA rules that permit international transfers before that age.Furthermore, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Villarreal have shown interest too. And while Perez’s family have assessed all the offers tabled to them, it is the player that has ultimately decided his fate and where he wants to play next. That’ll be Barça, as the prodigy aims to make it second time lucky with the La Liga champions and hopefully emulate homegrown products such as Gavi with whom he shares the number 6.As explained by SPORT, Perez “has a wonderful understanding of how to position himself, turn, and flawlessly move the ball long, as well as being very precise in short play”.He can also function as a number 8, perhaps in the vein of another former academy icon in Andres Iniesta, meaning he brings versatility akin to Gavi. Also helping Girona’s U-15 outfit this season, Perez has demonstrated maturity beyond his years as well as an ability to match the physical demands that step up entails in Catalan youth football.Helping them win the league by five points over FC Barcelona, Perez scored 11 goals in 29 apperances for Girona’s U-14s this season. This article was originally published on Forbes.com

Eight years ago, Peoria attorney predicted NBA success for Knicks star
PEORIA — Mitch Gilfillan called his shot back in 2018, and Jalen Brunson made sure it was good.Gilfillan, a Peoria attorney well-respected for his NIL expertise in today's college sports era, showed some talent evaluation skills as well in a social media post eight years ago.He predicted the major starring role Brunson has taken on for the New York Knicks in their run to the 2026 NBA Finals."Toronto Raptors Guard, Fred VanVleet, plays major crunch-time minutes for the best team in the NBA Eastern Conference," Gilfillan wrote in a 2018 post on what is now X. "Jalen Brunson will do the same thing. How a NBA front office does not draft him in the lottery borders management malpractice."The NBA didn't listen. Brunson was chosen in the second round, 33rd overall.Brunson wiped out the Cleveland Cavaliers and exposed veteran guard James Harden in an Eastern Conference Finals series sweep. So he is indeed playing crunch-time minutes for the best team in the Eastern Conference.Tweet was 2 months before the 2018 NBA Draft. Jalen Brunson ended up being selected in the 2nd Round and 33rd overall. https://t.co/MYNSzEjCAq— Mitch Gilfillan (@mitchgilfillan) May 26, 2026This article originally appeared on Journal Star: Peoria attorney predicted greatness of Knicks star when NBA GMs missed it

Just in: Liverpool have formally opened talks with Andoni Iraola over head coach vacancy
Just in: Liverpool have formally opened talks with Andoni Iraola over head coach vacancyIt has been reported by top-tier sources that Liverpool have ‘formally opened talks’ with Andoni Iraola over the head coach vacancy at Anfield. The former Bournemouth boss is the favourite to succeed Arne Slot in the dugout on Merseyside after the Dutchman’s sacking last weekend, and LFC chiefs are reportedly hoping to have the prospective appointment finalised before the start of the World Cup on 11 June.DOWNLOAD THE OFFICIAL EMPIRE OF THE KOP APP FOR ALL THE LATEST & BREAKING UPDATES – STRAIGHT TO YOUR PHONE! ON APPLE & GOOGLE PLAYLiverpool begin formal talks with IraolaShortly after 10am on Tuesday morning, James Pearce reported for The Athletic that Liverpool have opened formal discussions with the 43-year-old about becoming the Reds’ new head coach. The talks are being led by sporting director Richard Hughes, who held a similar job title at Bournemouth when the south coast club appointed Iraola three years ago. The Spaniard is ‘believed to be keen to take on the challenge at Anfield’, and there’s now a ‘growing expectation that his appointment will follow’.It’s also claimed that Liverpool chiefs have full belief that his coaching methords align with the ‘front foot, aggressive and urgent style of football’ that they want to see from the Reds.Want more Empire of the Kop coverage? Add us as a preferred source on Google to your favourites list for news you can trustHopefully Iraola appointment will be finalised in the next few daysIt’s been an open secret in recent days that LFC are keen to appoint Iraola as Slot’s successor, but this update from a hugely trusted source in Pearce (also corroborated by the reliable Lewis Steele for the Daily Mail) adds to the belief that the 43-year-old will be our next head coach. There definitely appears to be a mutual eagerness from both sides for the appointment to happen, and with formal negotiations now underway, hopefully the finer contractual points can soon be finalised and it won’t be long before the Spaniard is officially hired. The evidence of the 2025/26 season would indicate that Iraola would reinject much of the high-pressing intensity which was all too lacking for the Reds in that campaign, and many people who’ve worked with him firsthand have given glowing testimonies about his dedication to the job.Expectations at Anfield will naturally be much higher than anything he’s had at Bournemouth and Rayo Vallecano, but Liverpool wouldn’t be seeking to hire him if they weren’t fully confident that he could take them back to the summit of English football. With formal talks now in progress, fingers crossed that the appointment is confirmed in the next few days and that the 43-year-old is in place by the start of the transfer window in two weeks’ time.
