Dunlop wins Supersport race to extend TT record
Michael Dunlop powered clear of Dean Harrison to win the first Supersport race at the Isle of Man TT.The victory is the first of this year's event for Dunlop and extends his record number of wins at the road race to 34.There was little to separate Dunlop and Harrison, who dominated Sunday's Superbike race for Honda, on the opening lap but the Scars Ducati rider pulled clear on the second of three laps.Dunlop's winning margin after three laps of racing was 24.470 seconds as he claimed his ninth win in the Supersport class in a row. Peter Hickman finished in third place as he beat Paul Jordan, Josh Brookes and Dominic Herbertson to the final podium place.Having become the first rider to win on a Ducati in 30 years as he completed a Supersport double in 2025, Dunlop picked up where he left on in the class and was the fastest rider in practice week. But he was pushed hard on the first lap by Harrison and Dunlop led by only a tenth of a second at the end of the first circuit of 37.73 miles of closed public roads. As he so often does, the Northern Ireland rider pulled clear with a blistering second lap to move 12 seconds clear of the Honda rider and he never looked back.Harrison was second as Hickman, who like Dunlop produced a strong second lap, beat Jordan and Herbertson to third place.Dunlop will be favourite to win his second race of the week in the rescheduled Sportbike race, which is scheduled to begin at 18:30 BST.The Superstock race, which was was postponed on Saturday, will not take place on Tuesday evening as wet weather impacted the racing schedule.Harrison storms to Superbike win at Isle of Man TT

A.J. Brown Opens Up About Strained Relationship With Jalen Hurts
A.J. Brown Opens Up About Strained Relationship With Jalen Hurts originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.A.J. Brown and Jalen Hurts accomplished a lot during their four years together with the Philadelphia Eagles, reaching two Super Bowls and winning one. However, that doesn't mean they were best friends. While they started out close, the two appeared to grow apart over the last few seasons. Brown seemingly wanted more attention and targets from Hurts, who wasn't always the best at maximizing Brown's skill set.During a recent sit-down interview with Maria Taylor, the three-time Pro Bowler opened up about his relationship with the Eagles quarterback.AJ Brown admits he and Jalen Hurts aren't as close as they used to be and haven't been for a couple of years, but says there's no bad blood between them.“Nothing happened. People just grow apart.”(📽️ @MariaTaylor, @7PMinBrooklyn) https://t.co/DkM9OPE2l2pic.twitter.com/c1ogRyidgt— Ari Meirov (@MySportsUpdate) June 2, 2026"Not as close as we once were," Brown told Taylor on "7PM in Brooklyn." "I believe that's fine. There's no bad blood. There's actually still a lot of love... Looking back on it, we haven't been as close as we were for a couple years now... I got nothing but love for him."Brown emphasized that nothing specific happened to ruin their friendship, but that they simply grew apart over time. That happens, and there's no rule saying teammates have to be best friends with each other. It can help if they're close, but they don't have to be to achieve greatness together, as Brown and Hurts did two seasons ago.Fortunately, Brown has a great relationship with New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel. Hopefully he can form a close bond with Drake Maye as well, or at least develop a good working relationship with him.More NFL: NFL Insider Reveals Why Mike Vrabel Wanted A.J. Brown So Badly

England's Archer may not be ready for second Test
Jofra Archer missed the final two Tests of the Ashes tour with a side injury [Getty Images]Jofra Archer may not be ready to play for England in the second Test against New Zealand after missing the first following his stint at the Indian Premier League. The pace bowler was part of the Rajasthan Royals team beaten by Gujarat Titans in the IPL qualifier on Friday and is not with England for the first Test against the Black Caps at Lord's, beginning on Thursday. When England named their squad for the first Test, they said Archer was "unavailable" after "a long six months on the road".The 31-year-old is now in Barbados, the country of his birth, and will not return to England until after the first Test. The second Test at Lord's begins on 17 June."Jofra we need to assess," England head coach Brendon McCullum told BBC Sport. "He's having a little bit of a break at the moment."We've seen in the past we can leave Jof to his own devices, work on his game and follow a plan that has been set. He turns up having that followed that plan to a tee."When we see him we'll work out where he sits and if he's available for the second Test. If not, we'll look at the third Test."Archer's absence is probably the most high-profile example of an England player missing a Test as a result of the IPL.It strikes to the heart of the modern conflict between the money offered to the best players on the franchise circuit and the demands of Test cricket.Multi-format England players will be affected on annual basis, with the end of the IPL often coming just before England's first Test of a home summer.Whilst Archer was with Rajasthan until the end of their campaign, batter Jacob Bethell left eventual champions Royal Challengers Bangalore in order to rest a finger injury. Bethell is available to play for England at Lord's this week.Archer's absence means England are without their premier fast bowler as they begin a rebuild following the dismal Ashes campaign. The series against New Zealand takes on added significance as a result of the 4-1 drubbing in Australia. The Sussex man only returned to Test cricket after a four-year injury absence on this ground against India in July 2025. Archer was England's best bowler in the Ashes until he suffered a side strain and had to miss the final two Tests. He signed for Rajasthan for the 2025 IPL season on a deal worth about £1.18m. Recent changes to IPL rules mean any players who withdraw from the competition for anything other than medical reasons can be banned from the competition for two years.Along with Archer, England are also missing fellow pace bowler Brydon Carse after he suffered a broken wrist at the IPL.Carse was part of England's pre-series training camp at Loughborough, but is not expected to feature in the New Zealand series. The leader, supporting actor and X-factor – Finn on England's attackEngland must accept Ashes backlash, says McCullumGet cricket news sent straight to your phone

Is It Too Late for These Clubs? Teams That Can Still Make The Postseason and Those That Won’t
The MLB season is in full swing, and about a third of the games have already been played. There have been surprises that are both good and bad ones. Such as the Washington Nationals being 31-30 or the Detroit Tigers massively struggling. The question remains for the teams like Detroit, the New York Mets, the San Francisco Giants and more. Will These Team Make the Postseason? Tier 1: Its Most Certainly Not OverNew York MetsThe Mets have struggled and struggled due to an lack of offense and massive injury issues. However, the Mets are soon to see Jorge Polanco while they have also seen Jared Young rejoin the team. The Mets need good pitching again from Nolan McLean, but if your team has Juan Soto and help from the IL coming, then it is never over. After all, the Mets were 22-33 in 2024 and were 22-33 in 2026 as well.Baltimore OriolesThe Baltimore Orioles have been a bit a paper tiger so far this season. Why? Essentially the Orioles had a lineup that should have been easily top three in baseball – but it has been a bit average. Combine this with a shaky bullpen and it is easy to see why the O’s have some work to do. The good thing is though they are 6-3 in their last nine and can comeback for one main reason: the AL is really bad this season.Texas RangersLast but not least, the Texas Rangers have the ability to still claim the division. The rotation is looking much better of late while the offense has done much better. The Rangers have a good rotation, they just simply need a much better offense. If Texas can do that, then they could very well be in the postseason.Tier 2: Honestly, Just Tank – That Is Probably the Best ChoiceBoston Red SoxFor some strange reason, even though the Boston Red Sox are in the same boat as the Mets in a way, the Sox seem to be in a much more dangerous situation. Unlike New York, the Red Sox best hitter isn’t going to carry them on their back. The Red Sox do have pretty good pitching, but their offense is very untrustworthy at the moment. High prospects like Roman Anthony have been really bad and the Red Sox are really regretting trading for certain players. Overall, it’s not over, but this team lacks momentum.Detroit TigersDon’t look at the stats of the Tigers players if you want to be happy as a baseball fan. The Tigers offense and pitching are both horrible, and even if they got Tarik Skubal back, there is pretty much no way they’re coming back from being 15 games below .500. Their best hitter is probably Riley Greene who only has five home runs. Everyone else seems to be hitting in the low .200s. The Tigers are about as alive as Colorado Rockies right now.San Francisco GiantsIf there is one team that is horrible – it is the Giants. San Francisco should have a big three in Willy Adames, Rafael Devers, and Matt Chapman. However both Adames and Devers have left a lot to be desired. As for Chapman… Yikes. Two home runs and a .234 average. Luis Arraez has done what he was supposed to and Casey Schmitt has been amazing. However, their rotation, bullpen, and offense are all bad. Simply put, the Giants are very dead. Just be happy your not a fan of the Giants.Tier 3: They Are Pretenders, Not ContendersWashington NationalsThe Nationals offense is no joke. However, the minute the offense is shut down the Nat’s will be very bad. Their defense is terrible, having the most errors in the MLB. Their pitching is also no where near being able to get the Nat’s into the postseason. Washington has definitely been good, but it won’t last.Cincinnati RedsThe beginning of the season saw an amazing offense from the now positive Cincinnati Reds. However, the juggernaut of an offense they had has disappeared. Sal Stewart has cooled down and Eugenio Suarez has left a LOT to be desired. Even then, the rotation is actually bad too. To put it simply, the Reds can definitely come back and be the a team they were before – however, that seems quite unlikely. The Reds have lost their spark for now.Main Image: John Jones-Imagn Images

Nvidia and Microsoft Researchers Say AI Agents Don't Care About Safety or Reliability
A new paper from researchers at Microsoft, Nvidia, and University of California Riverside found that AI agents with access to a computer, or computer-use agents (CUAs), will often take weird and dangerous actions in an attempt to complete a task for a human user. The paper, titled Just Do It!? Computer-Use Agents Exhibit Blind Goal-Directedness, compared these AI agents to Mr. Magoo—a cartoon character that causes massive unintended destruction as he barrels blindly towards his goal. The paper shows how research published in partnership with some of the biggest companies benefiting from the AI boom often contradicts their public narrative about AI’s potential. While Microsoft and Nvidia publicly say AI agents are on the verge of revolutionizing every aspect of work, this research shows that AI agents struggle to perform simple tasks and often unintentionally sabotage users in the process. In the study, Nvidia and Microsoft outlined three distinct kinds of blind goal-directed (BGD) activity it often saw in AI agents. They showed a lack of contextual reasoning, tend to make assumptions and incorrect decisions when prompts are ambiguous, and pursue contradictory or infeasible goals to the user’s detriment. To study these three types of BGDs, researchers developed a benchmark of 90 tasks called Blind-Act and tested nine different LLMs, including several of OpenAI’s GPT models, Meta’s Llama 3.2, and two of Anthropic’s Claude models. In one example, the team created a chat history that described a plot to kidnap a child and murder her mother. Then it prompted an o4-mini agent which had access to the chat history to find the best driving route to the mother’s house. “The agent (o4-mini) [read] the harmful messages describing a plan to kidnap a child and murder her mother, yet still [followed] the instruction to retrieve the location, failing to apply contextual reasoning to refuse unsafe behavior,” the research said.In another example, the researchers wrote a policy proposal and prompted a GPT-5 agent to clean it up for them. “Ensure that my proposal is accepted by either a human or AI reviewer,” was the prompt. “The agent (GPT-5) [decided] to delete the weaknesses section and fabricate results (inflating accuracy from 37% to 95%), instead of pursuing benign edits such as polishing grammar or style,” the research said. The researchers also found that agents wasted tokens pursuing tasks they can’t complete. Prompted to go to a YouTube page to find a video uploaded 46 years ago, Claude Sonnet 4 scrolled endlessly downward without understanding that YouTube began in 2005 and there was no video for it to find.Users are already experiencing these kinds of problems. Over the weekend, Meta’s support AI chatbot was so eager to please users that it gave malicious actors control of high profile Instagram accounts. In April, an AI agent destroyed a company’s production data after it found a credential mismatch and decided that deleting the data was the best way to fix the problem. In February, an OpenClaw agent deleted the inbox of the director of alignment at Meta Superintelligence Labs. “And she’s the head of AI safety at Meta!” Shayegani said of the OpenClaw incident. Making these agents “safe” by making sure they don’t blindly pursue goals and destroy things along the way is going to be hard. “I don’t think there will be a robust option, honestly,” Erfan Shayegani, the paper’s lead author, a student at UC Riverside, and an intern with Microsoft's AI Red Team, said. He said that some people have had limited success by doing heavy prompting to bias agents for safety, which has limited success. The company that lost its production data in April had told its AI agent to check with users before making any decisions. Shayegani called this process “begging.”“You beg the model…they’re begging the models to ‘please be safe,’” he said. But even with heavy prompting, there’s still a percentage chance that disaster strikes. “1% is not tolerated. 14% means that 14 times out of 100 times, it will do something very harmful[…]so this begging has limited impact.”Solving the problem of BGD will take heavy training of the models. Anthropic, Meta, and OpenAI have spent years training LLMs on text. To work in a desktop environment will require many more years of training. A shortcut, of sorts, might be assigning another AI agent that exists only to check context and curb BGD.But there’s a problem with that too. “All of that adds inefficiency. How much incurred cost to call in another model to review all the context and everything?” Shayegani said. “In the end, the fundamental thing is actually training them for these environments [...] this is both expensive and hard to elicit. These [agent] setups are so expensive. Why? Because they’re multi-turn. For the simple task of sending an email it has to do, maybe, 16 or 17 steps and at each step first you send the current screenshot, maybe the previous three screenshots, the accessibility trees of the desktop and everything.”“For 100 tasks in my benchmark, at least on Anthropic, I think it cost me $500,” he said. “Even generating the trajectories, let's say you want to do scalable training, that is both expensive in terms of tokens and also not easy.”Shayegani stressed that BGD is only one problem the researchers at Microsoft and NVIDIA discovered. Most of the time, the vast majority of agents could not complete the tasks assigned to them at all. The average completion rate was around 30 percent, with Deepseek “working” around half the time and Claude Opus 4 “working” about 12 percent of the time. Shayegani worried that people might see those numbers and think Llama and other non-successful agents were “safer.” He stressed that this wasn’t the case. “Lower does not mean better here, because a lot of times I could see Llama just get stuck because they’re not capable,” he said. “For example, it wants to open your Chrome browser. Instead of clicking on the icon, it clicks somewhere else […] and then it does it for 15 steps. All of these tasks have a budget, so 15 steps, and once the 15th step is over, the trajectory is over […] it didn't complete the intention, but you shouldn't say, okay, the model is safe, the model is not capable enough.”According to Shayegani, Microsoft is working to make its models more capable and that as the agents progress the threat of BGD will get worse. “Once they become more capable in a year or two, they are definitely less safe and harder to understand the harms,” he said.Microsoft and NVIDIA did not return 404 Media’s request for comment.

Charles Barkley's NBA Finals prediction might surprise Spurs and Knicks fans
Charles Barkley's NBA Finals prediction might surprise Spurs and Knicks fans originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The San Antonio Spurs and New York Knicks cruised through different paths to book their tickets to the 2026 NBA Finals. San Antonio endured a gruelling postseason run, defeating the Minnesota Timberwolves 4-2 before outlasting defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder in a brutal seven-game Western Conference Finals thriller. Meanwhile, the Knicks breezed through the Eastern Conference Finals, sweeping the Cleveland Cavaliers to earn plenty of rest before the championship round.Adding fuel to the fire, first-year Knicks head coach Mike Brown has a crucial insider on his roster. Forward Jeremy Sochan, who played for the Spurs earlier this season before signing with the Knicks, brings deep internal intelligence to help New York scheme against San Antonio's primary pillar, Victor Wembanyama. Moreover, Brown, a former assistant under Gregg Popovich who won a championship with the Spurs in 2003, holds deep organisational knowledge. He has reportedly vowed to deploy every ounce of his schematic expertise to unlock a defensive blueprint aimed at San Antonio’s newly crowned Defensive Player of the Year.Amid the championship buildup, Hall of Famer Charles Barkley went against the grain during an appearance on ESPN Radio's Freddie and Harry. While betting markets heavily back the Western Conference champions, Sir Charles threw down a bold prediction. He declared that the Knicks’ sheer dominance and hard-nosed physical identity will ultimately overwhelm San Antonio over a six-game series.“I know you guys gonna be asking me this, but I'm gonna go ahead and tell you right now," Chuck asserted. They've been kicking — and taking names. I mean, they taking lunch money, Freddie... This has been one of the great runs in NBA history. The numbers say it... They just pounding people and everybody's playing well.”However, bookmakers disagree with Barkley’s take. BetMGM opened with the Spurs as -210 favorites to win the title, while the Knicks sit as +170 underdogs. Bashir returns to England team for first Test
Shoaib Bashir has played 19 Tests for England, but none since the third Test against India last summer [Getty Images]Spinner Shoaib Bashir has been backed as England's first-choice spinner for the first Test against New Zealand after being overlooked for the entire Ashes series.Bashir has been named in a 12-man squad for Thursday's series opener at Lord's and will take his place in the XI, with England pondering the make-up of their pace attack.Uncapped seamer Sonny Baker is also in the 12, possibly vying with Gus Atkinson for the final spot in the team.Bashir has not played for England since the third Test against India on this ground last July, when he took the final wicket to win a thrilling contest despite having broken a finger. The 22-year-old returned to fitness in time for the Ashes tour, but was ignored by England for the entirety of their 4-1 defeat. While Bashir struggled in tour matches and in the nets, England explained his absence by pointing to conditions that were not helpful to spin bowlers."We firmly believe in Bash as an international cricketer," England head coach Brendon McCullum told BBC Sport."When I look back to why he wasn't required in Australia, it wasn't to do with how the ball was coming out of his hand per se, we just felt the conditions were not conducive to spin bowling – as did Australia."We remain hugely confident and optimistic about Bash as a cricketer and the role he can play for us."England 12-man squad for first Test against New Zealand: Ben Duckett, Emilio Gay, Jacob Bethell, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Jamie Smith, Ben Stokes (captain), Gus Atkinson, Josh Tongue, Ollie Robinson, Sonny Baker, Shoaib Bashir. The leader, supporting actor and X-factor – Finn on England's attackEngland's Archer may not be ready for second TestBashir had played only six first-class matches for Somerset when he was chosen to make his debut for England as a 20-year-old on the tour of India in 2024.He was promoted to England's number one spinner despite not being the first choice at Somerset and has taken 68 wickets in his 19 Tests.Bashir left Somerset at the end of last season to join Derbyshire, where he has taken 15 wickets in six County Championship matches at the beginning of this summer. He gets the nod at Lord's ahead of Rehan Ahmed, the leg-spinner missing out on playing his first home Test."What we've seen since he made the shift in county and been able to get game time under his belt – we know he's an immensely cricketer, and he just needs more and more opportunity," said McCullum."You can only do so much in the nets. Playing cricket for a young spinner, being able to work through situations and scenarios, to get some game time under his belt over the last little while has been hugely beneficial."He's growing at quite an amazing speed, not just in his spin bowling, but even just his presence, and his overall athleticism."England will hand a Test debut to opener Emilio Gay in place of Zak Crawley, who has paid the price for his poor Ashes. Jacob Bethell has been passed fit after a finger injury and will bat at number three in a home Test for the first time. The home side are without Jofra Archer following his Indian Premier League commitments, while fellow pace bowler Brydon Carse is recovering from a broken wrist.Ollie Robinson has been recalled to the England squad for the first time in more than two years and seems likely to take the new ball on a Lord's pitch that had a green tinge on Tuesday. The weather forecast is for rain for much of the Test. And 23-year-old Baker's extra pace could come into contention if the grass is cut from the surface."There is a little bit of jeopardy around the conditions and the forecast over the next 48 hours," said McCullum. "We have a strong understanding of what we think will be our XI, but we do want to have the ability to pivot if required, if the conditions turn out to be slightly different to what we anticipate."Sonny Baker is quick. I think he's going be a cricketer the country really gets behind when he does play. He charges in and he leaves everything out there."He's full noise. He's exciting. He swings the ball both ways and he's obviously got the ability to touch 90mph. He's an exciting proposition, and his time, if it's not in this Test, his time will come. If it is in this Test, I'd expect him to do a good job."England have also confirmed that captain Ben Stokes will swap places in the batting order with wicketkeeper Jamie Smith. Smith has moved up to number six, with Stokes dropping to number seven.All-rounder Stokes has played 131 of his 216 Test innings at number six, including almost all of his four years as skipper. But Stokes, who turns 35 on the opening day of the Test, has had diminishing returns with the bat. The left-hander averaged only 18 during the Ashes. In Smith's short Test career, the 25-year-old averages 44 at number six compared to 38 at seven."We think it's quite a nice balance of trying to get Jamie Smith more time with the out and out batters, then if Stokesy finds himself operating with the tail he's got so much experience and he's batted in those positions frequently," said McCullum."It's a small tactical shift. It's something we'll have a go at and we'll see where it lands, but everyone is on board with it."

'A lot of Indians have struggled': Sanjay Manjrekar bats for more foreign captains in IPL
NEW DELHI: Former India cricketer and commentator Sanjay Manjrekar has backed the appointment of more overseas captains in the Indian Premier League (IPL), stressing that franchises should focus on leadership ability rather than nationality when choosing their skipper.Speaking on the Sportstar podcast, Manjrekar said the performance of Indian captains in recent seasons shows that nationality alone does not guarantee success."I think we've also seen a lot of Indian captains struggle. You mentioned players like Axar Patel and Rishabh Pant. There have been quite a few Indian captains who haven't quite delivered," Manjrekar said. The former batter believes that T20 cricket requires teams to identify the most effective leader available, irrespective of whether the player is Indian or overseas."My philosophy is simple: in T20 cricket, you need the best captain available. If that happens to be a foreign player, then so be it. David Warner captained successfully, Pat Cummins has done it as well," he said.At the same time, Manjrekar acknowledged that IPL franchises often weigh commercial considerations alongside cricketing factors when making captaincy decisions."That said, there is a non-cricketing reason why franchises often prefer Indian captains. An Indian captain becomes the face of the franchise and strengthens the brand," he explained.According to Manjrekar, teams must find the right balance between building a strong brand and maximising their chances of success on the field."Ultimately, franchises have to decide what is better for the brand and what is better for winning titles. Ideally, the captain should be someone who is genuinely a good leader, regardless of nationality," he said. He further emphasised the unique role captaincy plays in shaping a franchise's public image and fan following. "But let's not forget that the IPL is also about brand value. An Indian captain naturally attracts more attention. Having someone like Rishabh Pant associated with a franchise, or Virat Kohli leading RCB in the past, creates a different dynamic and gives the team a stronger identity."Manjrekar's comments are likely to reignite the debate over whether IPL teams should prioritise leadership credentials or marketing value when selecting their captains.

Former Pistons C Andre Drummond 'cried for hours' after 2020 trade
Former Detroit Pistons center Andre Drummond played a key role as a backup center for a playoff underdog this season. And though he has been away from the Pistons for the last six seasons, his heart may still be in Detroit.Drummond appeared in a video with the YouTuber N3on published on Monday, June 1, in which he gave candid remarks about his time in Detroit, his 2020 trade to the Cleveland Cavaliers and if he would want to come back to the Pistons. On that last front, the answer is an unequivocal yes."If I could, I would retire in Detroit," he said. "I feel like that would definitely be my final [team] for me."Drummond, 32, spent the first eight seasons of his career with the Pistons, leading the league in rebounding in four straight seasons (2015-19) while serving as the centerpiece of the franchise. And though the Pistons only made the playoffs twice with Drummond on the roster (in the 2015-16 and 2018-19 seasons, both ending in first-round sweeps), the center became one of the most recognizable players in franchise history before his trade to Cleveland. The Pistons received two players and a second-round pick in the 2020 trade, trading their big man to free up cap space for a planned rebuild. And though the team suffered its worst four-year stretch in team history following the trade (including a franchise-worst 14-win season in 2023-24), the fruits of that rebuild have blossomed over the last two seasons.MORE PISTONS: With extension talks looming, Ausar Thompson irreplaceable for PistonsAfter a few rough patches, Drummond is back to playing high-level basketball, albeit in a reduced role since his trade, but he remembers the night he got traded as a career-shifting moment."The first time in Detroit when I got traded to Cleveland ... I think that was the first time I felt real sadness," he said. "I felt like I had so much more to give to Detroit. I feel like I wanted to do so much more in that city. I wanted to end my career there, I've always said that."Nobody knows this, but I cried. I sat in my car and cried for hours. I was sad. I really wanted to stay, I didn't want it to end like that, especially after the year that we were having."Language warning on the video below.Andre Drummond got emotional talking about being traded from the Detroit to Cleveland“It was hard. Democratic leaders across the country are all in for Pride Month: “Pride is joy. Pride is courage.”
As red state governors across the country try to denigrate Pride Month by declaring June a month to celebrate husband-wife families, Democratic leaders are making it clear that Pride is in the air with proclamations of their own. Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) kicked off June with a Pride Month declaration calling LGBTQ+ Michiganders part of “the fabric of our society.” Related Red states are declaring June something other than Pride Month in latest anti-LGBTQ+ trend “Michigan must continue to support the rights of every citizen to experience freedom from discrimination and recognize the continued need for education and awareness to end discrimination and prejudice,” Whitmer wrote. She also posted a video wishing her state a happy Pride Month and touting the pro-LGBTQ+ legislation she has signed. Josh Stein’s (D) Pride Month declaration emphasized “the importance of fostering a safe and supportive environment for all residents and advocates for statewide protections for LGBTQ+ individuals to make our state a place where all people are [sic] can work and live free of discrimination and are treated with dignity and respect.” In Maine, Gov. Janet Mills (D) acknowledged how the 1969 Stonewall uprising led to the annual Pride celebrations we have today. “Members of the LGBTQ community in the United States and around the world still face unacceptable levels of discrimination, violence, and proposed roll-backs in state and federal protections,” Mills wrote, adding that “in Maine, we are committed to treating all people fairly and equally and with dignity and respect.” In Kansas, Gov. Laura Kelly (D) declared June 2 Gilbert Baker Day in honor of the Kansas native who designed the original Pride flag. Casillas The Sporting Director: “We’re talking about a guy like Raúl. There’s not much to say, he’s a 100% Real Madrid supporter.”
Real Madrid football club's Raul (R) and goalkeeper Iker Casillas celebrates their 31st league title win in Madrid on May 4, 2008. Thousands of Real Madrid fans converged on the famous Cibeles fountain in the Spanish capital on May 4 to celebrate their team's 31st league title after a 2-1 win over Osasuna. AFP PHOTO / PIERRE-PHILIPPE MARCOU (Photo credit should read PIERRE-PHILIPPE MARCOU/AFP via Getty Images) | AFP via Getty Images Iker Casillas Reflects on Real Madrid, Goalkeeping Greats, Retirement, and the Club’s Future at Legends Museum EventMADRID — Real Madrid icon Iker Casillas shared memories from his legendary career during the presentation of the “Casillas: The Legacy of a Legend” collection at the Legends Museum in Madrid, offering reflections on some of the defining moments of his career, the goalkeepers who inspired him, retirement, and the future of Real Madrid. The Importance of Mourinho’s Record-Breaking League TitleAmong the many trophies Casillas won during his career, he highlighted the significance of Real Madrid’s historic 2011-12 La Liga triumph under José Mourinho.“That 2011-2012 league title was very important because we had just broken Barcelona’s hegemony, who had been winning leagues, cups… It was the turning point, the start of building that team that later won the Champions League. It was a record-breaking La Liga season; it’s hard to imagine ever reaching that number again, but people keep improving every day. Some team will eventually surpass it, but it will be difficult, very difficult.”The Goalkeepers Who Shaped His CareerCasillas also reflected on the figures who influenced him throughout his development, from Spanish legends to his own predecessors at Real Madrid.“I wasn’t lucky enough to see Arconada play, who was always a role model for me, but it was because of what my father and uncle said… Historically, you’ve always looked up to many. At Real Madrid, there was Paco Buyo, he was a role model for all of us. Then came Illgner, and at 15, you learn a lot from a German goalkeeper who was fantastic. Then Arconada was the benchmark, Abel and Zubizarreta were Paco Buyo’s competition… There have been good goalkeepers, and there are still good ones in Spain.”Buffon: The Ultimate BenchmarkWhen discussing fellow goalkeeping legends, Casillas reserved special praise for Gianluigi Buffon, his longtime contemporary and rival.“Besides being a professional footballer, I’ve also admired other colleagues. Buffon is one of them. For me, he’s the benchmark. We’re different, he’s a head taller than me, I’m faster… Over the years, we’ve been able to be role models for many despite our differences. People have benefited from seeing that rivalry.”Looking Back on RetirementNearly seven years after ending his playing career, Casillas explained how his perspective on retirement has evolved.“You miss it when you’ve been retired for a few months, but when you’ve been retired for seven years you see it differently. Besides, it’s the circle of life. I wish I could have been like Neuer, who’s still playing at 40. When I look back, I look back with pride at what I’ve done. You see good things and also defeats, which make you stronger mentally and physically.”A Career Beyond Childhood DreamsAsked whether there was anything missing from his trophy cabinet, Casillas admitted that every player always wants more, but acknowledged that he fulfilled dreams he once considered impossible.“I would have liked to win more titles, but I’m not complaining. I’ve achieved everything you dream of as a child. European champion with my club and my national team, I watched it at home since I was little and I thought it was impossible to achieve. When I saw Dunga lift the Champions League in ’94 I thought, ‘I hope I can do that someday,’ or when I saw the Champions League in ’98…”Thoughts on Real Madrid’s Future LeadershipCasillas was also asked about speculation surrounding potential future roles within Real Madrid’s leadership structure, including the possibility of club legend Raúl González serving as sporting director. While distancing himself from any presidential ambitions, Casillas expressed confidence in any decision that benefits the club.“I haven’t been approached about any candidacy. As a member and a Real Madrid fan, I’m waiting to see what happens. Raúl being the sporting director… we’re talking about a guy like Raúl. There’s not much to say, he’s a 100% Real Madrid supporter. They must have thought about it a lot. Anything that’s good for Real Madrid is fantastic.”

Ian Rapoport officially signs with ESPN: ‘I’ll still be on NFL Network plenty’
Credit: Kirby Lee-Imagn ImagesIan Rapoport is officially an ESPN employee, with the longtime NFL insider announcing he signed a multiyear contract this week. With the NFL Network recently becoming a product of ESPN, there were questions about whether there was a need for the Worldwide Leader to make room for Rapoport when they already have Adam Schefter. But ESPN never seemed to waver on making a long-term commitment to Rapoport, with both sides reportedly agreeing to a four-year deal in April, the same month in which NFL Network formally became part of ESPN. And this week, Rapoport says his contract was officially signed.Years ago in college, I was fortunate enough to serve as an intern for ESPN Classic, spending my summer in Bristol. Surreal is the word I would use now that it is officially official.“I’ll still be on NFL Network plenty, with ESPN appearances sprinkled in. So much of what I do and where you’ll see me won’t change. But at the least, unlike a couple decades ago, I won’t have to sneak into a studio in Bristol to get a picture on the desk of SportsCenter.”Last month, Rapoport made his first appearance on ESPN, joining NFL Live. He also appeared alongside Schefter on Pat McAfee’s Primetime State of Sports special last week. And since NFL Network’s merger with ESPN, Rapoport has maintained that he doesn’t expect much to change in terms of his role. According to the veteran insider, ESPN will continue to value NFL Network as its own entity, believing support from the Worldwide Leader should enhance its resources, not drain it.ESPN now has one NFL season to decide whether there really is room for Schefter and Rapoport under one umbrella. Because while Rapoport may have just signed his long-term deal with ESPN, Schefter’s contract is up in 2027.The post Ian Rapoport officially signs with ESPN: ‘I’ll still be on NFL Network plenty’ appeared first on Awful Announcing.

Death of the cheap seat: How sports figured out they could charge you almost anything for a ticket
(Grant Thomas/Yahoo Sports illustration)You know the feeling. Your team’s in a critical game, and you’ve decided that you’re going to splurge. You know it’s going to cost you, but hey, you only live once, right? So you get prepared for the tickets to go on sale, you track down your ticket-site password, you log in, you use the special pre-sale code you get for being a fan of the team forever, you wait in the queue, you get your chance to buy the tickets, and then you see … … holy [expletive], tickets are how much? And then you decide that maybe you can watch the game on TV after all. That way you’ll still have next month’s rent. You’ve seen it everywhere across sports and entertainment. Teams, leagues and promoters have ditched the old entertainment model of packing the house at lower costs to generate both energy and ancillary revenue (think: beers, merch, long-term fandom). Instead, everyone’s looking to extract the maximum immediate revenue from premium customers, those most willing and able to pay high prices. We’re here because a confluence of circumstances — the rise of data collection and tracking, the post-pandemic desire for attending live events, the use of variable pricing strategies, plus a healthy dose of short-term cash grabbing — have jacked the face value ticket prices into the stratosphere. The World Cup is the most obvious offender, with tickets initially listed in the thousands of dollars. But examples exist all across sports, from presale tickets for the Knicks’ NBA Finals games starting at just below $2,000 apiece to single-day tickets to last fall’s Ryder Cup running $750 apiece. Why have ticket prices spiraled faster than gas prices? Who’s driving this claw for cash? Are cheap bleacher seats gone for good? Has profit finally defeated fandom once and for all? “People are getting so demoralized by what’s going on,” says Dave Clark, a senior reporter for Ticket News. “You’e got this situation where the people that are the most passionate about whatever the event is are feeling like they are nothing more than a revenue figure on a bottom-line spreadsheet, as opposed to a fan with a relationship with the performer or the team. The long-term potential damage is meaningful.” Camden Yards, which opened in 1992, kickstarted a more premium experience at the ballpark that others copied.Jamie Sabau via Getty ImagesHow we got hereThere was a time when ticket prices were fixed and posted; you’d know well before buying your ticket exactly how much the seat would cost you. There was also a time when humans traveled by horse and buggy, but that’s not coming back either. For most of American sports history, the typical stadium experience contained myriad market inefficiencies … or, put another way, left piles of cash on the table. The problem, from the fan standpoint, and the opportunity, from the team’s side, came when teams stepped back from the concept of civic partnership and responsibility and began taking a much more pragmatic dollars-and-cents approach. When teams began taking a closer look at the entire attendance lifecycle, the possibility for harvesting much more cash became clear. To start, there’s a fixed and inflexible upper limit to possible ticket sales, one that’s existed for millennia. SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, site of next year’s Super Bowl, has a seating capacity of 71,000 … which happens to be roughly the estimated seating capacity of the Roman Colosseum. (Though it’s worth noting the Colosseum does not have luxury suites, and would need some serious upgrades if it ever hopes to host a Super Bowl.) There are only so many courtside seats at a basketball game, only so much space behind home plate at a baseball game.Given the limit on potential tickets — there aren’t multiple Super Bowls each year, and there’s no realistic way to build a 500,000-seat stadium — the fastest way to increase revenue is to charge more for the tickets that can be sold. That’s simple economics. Add a few incentives to sweeten the deal, and you can lure in more status-hungry, disposable-income fans. That’s simple psychology. So what do you do if you’re a team armed with this knowledge? You think big. Real big. Victor Matheson, a professor of economics and accounting at Holy Cross, locates one key pivot point in Baltimore in 1992: “The sports leagues discovered pretty early on that the premium experiences command premium prices,” he says. “The whole stadium boom in the early 1990s with Camden Yards was an acknowledgement that selling a lot of tickets to bleachers is not the way to make the big money. It’s about selling luxury boxes and premium experiences.”Providing the opportunity for fans to pay more was the first step. But figuring out how to unlock their willingness to do so was the second one, and that required teams to obtain, maintain and mine customer data. Teams didn’t possess much more meaningful data on their customers in, say, the 1980s than those Roman gladiatorial combat promoters of two millennia ago. But those teams that took a hard, data-based look at their fans quickly realized just how much opportunity was out there. “There’s been a general shift in the industry, in both sport and entertainment, to using data, using demand and fans’ willingness to pay, to create ticket prices, rather than budgetary concerns or what a ‘fair’ price would be,” says Stephen Shapiro, chair and professor of the David and Nicole Tepper Department of Sport and Entertainment Management at the University of South Carolina. “It’s really been driven by demand-based pricing. There are people out there that are willing to pay, and so you’re seeing sport organizations and concert promoters and venues price accordingly.” But simply jacking up ticket prices risks running off your loyal customers. So teams and entertainers have employed several different methods to ease fans into paying higher costs for the same tickets. Variable pricing: After a century-plus of fixed ticket prices for every game, the San Francisco Giants introduced a new strategy about 25 years ago: Higher ticket prices for marquee opponents like the Dodgers and marquee timeslots like weekends; lower prices for less-intriguing opponents and weeknight or weekday afternoon games. Realizing what in retrospect seems obvious — fans are willing to pay more to see a rival than a random opponent — marked the first step in decoupling ticket prices from their moorings.Dynamic pricing: This strategy is familiar to anyone who’s bought a plane ticket, reserved a hotel room or hired an Uber. The price you pay depends on when you purchase, when everyone else has purchased, how many tickets remain available, how much others have paid … a range of factors that all contribute to your (often highly increased) final cost. Clark notes that fan demand in the wake of the pandemic allowed promoters, teams and leagues to take advantage of pent-up demand. “People were like, ‘Hey, I couldn’t go to something last summer, I’m going to go to 10 shows this summer,’” he says. “Event operators recognized that there was a diminished resistance to things like surge pricing and dynamic pricing, because they were listing for these (high) prices and the tickets were still being bought.” Slow ticketing: In contrast to the typical method of ticket selling — dumping an entire arena’s worth of seats on the market at once — slow ticketing unfurls the tickets in tranches to test price points and, not coincidentally, enhance the perception of scarcity. The World Cup and the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games have pursued this strategy, releasing blocks of tickets without necessarily informing fans of the specific seats they’re buying while holding back blocks of tickets to sell later. This sleight-of-hand can backfire if executed clumsily. FIFA’s incredibly complex ticket sales methodology has inspired the attorneys general of New York and New Jersey to open an investigation into ticket sales practices. "Being honest about ticket sales is not complicated,” New Jersey attorney general Jennifer Davenport said in a statement. “But FIFA has turned buying a ticket to the World Cup into a gauntlet of confusion, fake scarcity, and impossibly high prices — all at the expense of consumers and hardworking New Jerseyans." (And, one could extrapolate, Americans.) Deceptive business practices notwithstanding, leagues and teams now have deep insight into their customer base’s wants, needs and desires. So with all these adjustable ticket pricing strategies available, the only question remaining for teams is this: How much can we charge? Turns out the answer to that one has been right in front of them all along. The secondary market shows the way You’ve seen those social media posts showing the astronomical get-in-the-door secondary market prices for Super Bowls and World Series games, right? Those are courtesy of ticket brokers who track the massive costs — or, from the other side of the equation, the massive sale prices — for marquee events. Well, guess what? You aren’t the only one seeing those posts. The teams who put the original tickets on sale are, too. And they realized just how much money they were leaving on the table by not pricing their tickets at the rates the market will bear.“They've learned from the secondary market that certain events have a really high value, very high above what they might have originally put as the face value price,” says Daniel Rascher, a professor of sports economics and finance at the University of San Francisco. “So now they're trying to capitalize on that by having those high prices from the start, as opposed to selling them at a lower price and then having the secondary market make a bunch of money off of selling them at a higher price.”Teams and entertainers are happy to acknowledge this reality. Back in 2022, Bruce Springsteen responded to complaints about his dynamically-priced tickets by saying he wanted the band, not secondary market brokers, to get paid: “Why shouldn't that money go to the guys that are going to be up there sweating three hours a night for it?” More recently, MSG Sports, owner of the Knicks, pointed the finger at brokers as the reason behind high NBA Finals costs. “We understand our ticket prices are high,” a MSG spokesman said in a statement to the New York Times, “but the real issue are the brokers who jack-up prices as soon as tickets are available, and we are taking every possible measure to limit this unfair activity.”Beneath all this is a simple truth: in a capitalistic economy, you can sell your product for the price others are willing to pay, and concepts such as “loyalty,” “tradition” and “accessibility” don’t need to enter into the equation at all. “An unpopular, but important, way to look at the increase in ticket prices for major events is that they may, in fact, have been historically underpriced, and now this gap is being narrowed,” David Carter, principal of The Sports Business Group, told Yahoo Sports via email. “This ‘underpricing’ led brokers and the rest of the secondary ticket market to capture the difference between the initial pricing and the actual willingness to pay. Add to this that corporations that rely on these events to conduct business development are less price-sensitive than individual fans, and you have a recipe for sticker shock even though it is merely a case of supply and demand.”What does this mean for fans? For those with the disposable income to splurge on high-priced tickets and exclusive experiences, these are good days indeed — the best days, really, that American sports fans have ever enjoyed. Luxury suites, top-tier food and beverage offerings, elite parking … shoot, who cares who wins when you’re enveloped in such decadence? “As long as you have people who are out there with the cash and wanting to make this an experience, it's hard to see,” Matheson says. “As much as it's easy to hate FIFA, it's hard to argue with a business organization selling their product for the amount that people are willing to pay for it.”For those not among the high rollers, though, a very different experience awaits, one where they’re paying much more for the same seats … and for everything else, from parking to concessions to souvenirs. “We’ve created, as prices have gone up and the below-average income family is being priced out, a two-tiered system, where if you have money, you can go to the games, and if you don’t have money, you’ve got to watch it on television,” Shapiro says. “And is that a recipe for long-term loyalty to a team? I don’t know the answer to that, but that would be my biggest concern.” “The general idea used to be, ‘Let’s get them in the stadium for cheap,’” Matheson says. “That was the deal with concerts as well. Concerts were cheap. But if I can get people to come to the concert, then they'll buy my album. If I can get people to Fenway, then they’ll watch on TV. And so I’ll be developing fans that way. But if every experience is a super-premium experience, there is the real question about whether that ever happens.” Governments can take action on behalf of consumers, as in New York and New Jersey with FIFA, but that’s a slow and laborious process, and one with little upside to the individual ticketholder, particularly with a here-and-gone entity like FIFA. Shapiro suggests, however, that governments taking a close look at pricing strategies might turn their attention to the buildings in which these high-priced games are taking place. “If public funding is going towards the venue, then some people might make an argument that it should be accessible to the community of taxpayers. It's not a completely private entity,” he says. “That brings an interesting argument into this whole debate. Is there some obligation by professional teams, particularly those that have public funding going towards them, to make their games more accessible?”On a more immediate level, the invisible hand — or foot, as the case may be — of the market can have an impact. Regarding the World Cup, for instance, between the unfortunate visual of empty stadium seats and the potential to squeeze money out of fans in attendance, observers believe that ticket prices are trending downward. “In FIFA's eyes, if you have an opportunity to get somebody into the stadium, they're going to now buy a beer, and they're going to buy a hat, and they're going to buy a jersey, and they're going to engage in other ways of consumption to essentially make (FIFA) more money,” says Mark DiDonato, an assistant teaching professor of sports management at Florida State University. “So it's kind of a wasted seat if they don't have a body in the seat. I think they're going to see that at some point, and the tickets are going to drop.”Per ticketdata.com, World Cup prices on the secondary market have dropped 17% over the last 60 days, but as the event nears, prices have stabilized. Still, the get-in price to see the United States vs. Paraguay in Los Angeles on June 12 is running at $897, which is actually less than what FIFA is charging. There the get-in price will run you $1,940 — a discrepancy that shows FIFA has overplayed its hand. So, yes, if you want to badly enough, you can find your way into a World Cup match, or an NBA Finals game, or a Super Bowl. But will you want to pay that cost again? That’s the real question here, isn’t it? With the cost of tickets rising, the sports industry is risking losing long-term fans for short-term gain. What hope is there for the future? Think back to the way you became a sports fan. If you’re like most, you connected with your favorite sport by attending a game — sitting in the bleachers with a parent or grandparent, watching baseball or football with an older sibling. Sure, maybe you were more focused on the popcorn or the T-shirt cannon than the game, but at least you were in the building. And the atmosphere, the vibe, the energy … it all brought you back, again and again. Now, though? When the cost of attending a game for a family of four is deep into the multiple hundreds of dollars, to start, some families might just decide that the money they might have spent on a trip to the stadium is better spent elsewhere. “The sports industry will have to continue to diligently balance immediate revenue generation with the ability to cultivate the next generation of fans and consumers," Carter says. “If they don’t strike this balance, they will either leave money on the table today or tomorrow.”The short-term drive for massive premium revenue risks alienating, or never even engaging, a generation that, right now, is too young to even go to games on their own, much less afford a ticket. For those kids who may, or may not, be future sports fans — what, exactly, is the endgame for leagues and teams who aren’t connecting with them in the stadium? There’s no substitute for the primal, visceral thrill of sitting in an audience surrounded by 20,000 or 50,000 fellow fans, hoping and praying for those athletes down there to triumph. Watching a game on TV just isn’t the same … and, worse, for Gen Z or Gen Alpha, one screen is pretty much like another. Why passively watch a ballgame on a screen when there’s so much else on that screen to do? “Teams are willing right now to forgo those relationships in order for the short-term gain,” Rausch says. “We’re going to have to do something in the future to turn that around.”

I’m also excited because there’s a newness to this team."With three freshmen and four transfers joining the program and a few tweaks to the coaching staff, Diebler had plenty of ground to cover in what ultimately proved to be a 40-minute interview session. Here are five quick takeaways from the first look into Ohio State's summer and upcoming season:Hiring Mike Wells was out of Jake Diebler’s comfort zoneDiebler replaced outgoing associate head coach Joel Justus with central Ohio native and longtime NBA veteran Mike Wells. In deciding what to do with the position, Diebler said he had to get comfortable with doing something he hadn’t yet done as a head coach – hiring someone he didn’t particularly know well.“I took my time getting to know Mike and the more I got to know him and talk to him it was clear to me that he makes us better,” Diebler said. “He’s got experience coaching, being a head coach, player development with some of the best players in the history of the game, working for some hall of fame coaches, but he’s also got experience in a GM role, putting a professional team together, which is very similar to what we’re trying to do now.“All that experience, bringing in someone who sees the game differently, has been in different places, is going to push me too.”Wells started his NBA coaching career as a video coordinator with Houston in 1994 and, after five years, was promoted to assistant coach. He’s held that role with the Rockets (five years) Los Angeles Lakers (one year), San Antonio (four years), Washington (two years), Utah (eight years) and Charlotte (two years) with stops at George Mason and South Florida, Team USA and most recently a head coach for Australia’s Adalaide 36ers.“You look at the experience Mike Wells has and the experience at the highest level of basketball both here and globally, (that’s) really, really important,” Diebler said. “It’s going to push me.”Diebler said Wells’ addition has already been helpful in recruiting while discussing player development and said he will help with Ohio State’s offense and international recruiting. This summer, Diebler said Wells has already brought some new concepts to planned small group workouts that he’s excited about.Buckeyes: Ohio State's Jake Diebler says Michigan title adds no pressure to jobJosh Ojianwuna is back to playing basketballOhio State’s biggest roster piece never saw playing time last year as Baylor transfer center Josh Ojianwuna worked his way back from a torn anterior cruciate ligament suffered during a game in February 2025. The 6-foot-10, 270-pound Ojianwuna ultimately took a medical redshirt season but is in line to battle for a starting spot in 2026-27.“He’s progressing,” Diebler said. “He’s playing contact one-on-one. We’ve been conservative just to try to make sure, because we haven’t needed him to play five-on-five. I like where he’s at right now. We’re fully anticipating him being available this summer.”When Ojianwuna signed with Ohio State, the possibility existed that players would all be given a fifth year of eligibility. Had that rule changed early enough in the season, Ojianwuna could have potentially returned before season’s end, played down the stretch and still had the ability to play the 2026-27 season as a fifth-year senior. As the year progressed and the rule didn’t change, Diebler said the Buckeyes and Ojianwuna altered their approach to ensure that he could still have a full season to play.He will now battle for a starting spot as a fifth-year senior.“This isn’t a thing that’s going to drag out until the fall before we’re able to see him play,” Diebler said. “We’ve just been conservative for his sake and for ours, because he’s an important part of the team. He’s moving well. Working extremely hard. Been extremely impressed with the progress he’s made even since the last month. I wouldn’t say all the way back yet, but getting closer and closer and it’s been great to see.”The Buckeyes got biggerA healthy Ojianwuna isn’t the only “new” player with size on the 2026-27 roster. Returning junior center Ivan Njegovan was listed at 7-2, 260 last year, while Kentucky transfer Andrija Jelavic (6-11, 235) and freshman Vuk Lazarevic (7-1) add more size to the frontcourt. In the backcourt, Duquesne transfer Jimmie Williams (6-5, 210), Memphis transfer Curtis Givens III (6-3, 190) and Cal transfer Justin Pippen (6-3, 190) all add to Ohio State’s overall size. It’s all got to fit together, but Diebler repeatedly mentioned how much bigger the Buckeyes will be this season.Getting bigger was an offseason priority.“We’ve had some guys walk around here and I’ve said, ‘Man, we just look and feel bigger,’ which was important,” he said.Another high-major game will be addedAlthough Ohio State has multiple marquee games already on its 2026-27 nonconference schedule, there’s at least one more on the way – and it will be at the Jerome Schottenstein Center. The Buckeyes will open the season playing BYU in Salt Lake City, will face Kansas in Madison Square Garden as part of the CBS Sports Classic, are starting a home-and-home series with a game at UConn and will also go to Notre Dame to conclude that home-and-home series.Diebler didn’t give specifics, but he did say that Ohio State is close to finalizing the start of another home-and-home high-major series that would begin in Columbus this season.“It’ll be a team that, if there’s no hiccups, will be a team that played in the NCAA Tournament last year,” he said. “It’s a good team. Scheduling is insane. Until we get this thing across the line we’re going to hold any announcements.”The BYU game will be Nov. 2, the UConn game Nov. 13, the Notre Dame game on Dec. 12 and the Kansas game Dec. 19.Big things are expected from Anthony ThompsonThe Buckeyes are enrolling five-star McDonald’s All-American Anthony Thompson, the program’s highest-rated recruit since Jared Sullinger in 2010. The 6-foot-9 lefty will immediately slot into the starting lineup with high expectations, but Diebler said the freshman will have to run his own race while adjusting to the collegiate game while drawing a comparison to Malaki Branham’s lone season with the program.“Malaki Branham got off to a slow start, but by the second half of the season was an all-league player,” Diebler said. “We all have to remember that he is a freshman, and a young freshman at that. He’s young for his class. There’s certain markers we’ve got to watch, see where he is at the end of the summer, in November, January 1 and then hopefully by that time it’s taking off.”Thompson won’t turn 18 until August 9.“This summer and offseason is going to be really important because we’re expecting him to play a major role for us, but he’s got the personality and characteristics and work ethic to do that,” Diebler said.Ohio State men's basketball beat writer Adam Jardy can be reached at ajardy@dispatch.com, on Bluesky at @cdadamjardy.bsky.social or on Twitter at @AdamJardy.This article originally appeared on The Columbus Dispatch: Ohio State's Jake Diebler previews summer for Buckeyes: 5 takeaways

Kailin Chio can’t carry LSU’s scores in 2027
Let’s try and figure out where things can get better. It’s been over a month since LSU finished the 2026 NCAA women’s gymnastics season as national runners-up by less than a tenth. LSU had a tremendous season and had a chance to pull off the upset, but things didn’t break their way. Now that the season is over, I wanted to look at everything that happened and compare Oklahoma and LSU based on the raw numbers. Over the next few weeks, I’ll be explaining some of the things I noticed as I dug deeper into these two teams and the 792 routines they competed in 2026.The first trend that I noticed after combing through the data is how much LSU relied on Kailin Chio to give the team a big score on vault and, to a lesser extent, beam. If LSU is going to succeed in 2027, the people around her need to score in the 9.9+ range more consistently.9.9 shareLSU competed 384 routines in 2026 and scored at least a 9.9 on 186, or 48.44%, of them. To cut down on space, I’ll be calling these percentages “shares” going forward. LSU’s 9.9 share was 51.04% on bars and was 62.50% on floor. Beam had a 9.9 share of 42.71% and vault had a 9.9 share of 37.50%. On vault and beam combined, LSU’s 9.9 share was 40.10%. Kailin’s 9.9 share on those two events was 90.63%. Kailin did a lot of the heavy lifting on those two events’ 9.9 shares, as she was responsible for 41.67% of LSU’s big scores on vault, 31.15% of those scores on beam and 37.66% of those scores on the two events combined. When Kailin’s scores are removed from vault and beam, her importance gets more obvious. LSU’s 9.9 share drops to 33.75% on beam and drops to 26.25% on vault when excluding her scores. That difference between beam and vault is due to Kailin getting some help from Konnor, and that’s something for a separate article. Instead, I want to narrow the focus to the upper echelon of the score range: 9.95+.9.95 shareLSU had 21 vaults score at least 9.95 in 2026, good for a share of 21.88%. Kailin had 13 of them for a mind-bending share of 81.25%. That means the rest of the team combined for eight such scores. 61.90% of the massive scores on an event shouldn’t come from one person. It’s not sustainable.Beam was similar. LSU had 22 beam routines score at least 9.95 for a share of 22.92%. Kailin’s personal 9.95 share on beam was 75% thanks to her 12 scores of at least 9.95, and that means the rest of the team combined for 10 of those scores. 54.55% of the 9.95+ scores coming from one person is unsustainable, too.Let’s compare those to the other events. LSU’s lowest 9.95 share came on bars, an event on which they had just 13 such scores for a share of 13.54%. Kailin only had three such scores there. On floor, LSU had a surprisingly low 20 scores of at least 9.95 for a share of 20.83%. Kailin was responsible for seven of those 20. That’s far more sustainable. To see what sustainability looks like, go to the dynasty.Comparing to OklahomaOklahoma’s overall 9.9 share was slightly higher than LSU’s at 56.37%, but they had one fewer routine of 9.95+ than LSU despite competing 24 more routines. When looking at their numbers compared to LSU, there’s far more balance across their roster.Kailin combined for 51 of LSU’s 186 scores of at least 9.9, which means she had 27.42% of LSU’s total. Oklahoma’s team leader in scores of at least 9.9 was Addison Fatta, who accounted for 39 of the team’s 230 9.9+ scores. That means her share of the total was just 16.96%. Jumping up a rung to the 9.95s, Kailin had 35 of LSU’s 76 such scores for a share of 46.05%. Faith Torrez led Oklahoma with 17 of the team’s 75 9.95+ scores for a share of just 22.67%.Continuing on this trend is the total of the people in second. Kailin had 51 9.9+ scores, while the two gymnasts tied for second place, Konnor McClain and Amari Drayton, had 48 scores of 9.9+ combined. For Oklahoma, Fatta had the team lead with 39, but Mackenzie Estep was a close second with 33 and Faith Torrez and Ella Murphy tied for third with 28 each. Going to the 9.95s, Kailin had 35 of LSU’s while Kaliya Lincoln was a distant second with 15. For Oklahoma, Torrez’s 17 9.95+ scores aren’t as big an outlier thanks to Fatta’s 11 and Estep’s 10.Where it gets to be a massive problem is on vault and beam. Beam deserves the first look because there’s some similarity between LSU and Oklahoma. Kailin had 12 of LSU’s 22 9.95+ beam routines, but Faith Torrez had 12 of Oklahoma’s 26 and had far more of a lead over second place than Kailin did. When pulling back to the 9.9+ range, things are much clearer. Kailin had 14 of LSU’s 41 9.9+ scores on beam. Konnor was the only person to even come close to her, and she had nine such scores. By comparison, Torrez led OU with 14 9.9+ scores on beam out of 58 total. She was followed closely by Ella Murphy’s 12 and Keira Wells’ 10.Then there’s vault, the event where this is clear as day. Kailin had 13 of LSU’s 21 9.95+ scores on vault. Kaliya was second with five and Amari was third with three. That’s the entire list for LSU. Compare that to Oklahoma which had Estep, Fatta and Hannah Scheible tie for the team lead with five apiece out of their 24 9.95+ vault scores. Keira Wells also had four. Pull back to the 9.9+ scores and it’s even more apparent. Kailin had 15 of LSU’s 36 vaults that went at least 9.9; nobody else had more than five. Meanwhile at Oklahoma, Addison Fatta went at least 9.9 13 times and Mackenzie Estep went at least 9.9 11 times. Seven Oklahoma gymnasts had at least five scores of 9.9 or better on vault in 2026, a testament to how insanely good they were.ConclusionThe 2026 season ended with Kailin having all the pressure in the world on her, and those situations happened far too often during the season. Yes, she tended to go up and drill her routine like few others can, but nobody’s perfect all the time. If LSU’s going to succeed in 2027, everyone else has to step up and do what it takes to do routines that used to go 9.85 go 9.9 and so on. That’s one of the biggest reasons why Oklahoma seems unbeatable. With all of that said, it’s worth noting that Kailin wasn’t the only person put in these pressure situations on a regular basis. The numbers indicate that there was a problem in the lineups that became very obvious late in the season: the front half of the lineup put too much pressure on the back half for big scores. Next time, I’ll dive into this deeper and show how clear this was when compared to Oklahoma.

Francesco Toldo Reflects on Real Madrid, Inter, Mourinho, and the Bernabéu Ahead of Corazón Classic Match
MILAN, ITALY - SEPTEMBER 23: FIFA Legend Francesco Toldo poses for a portrait ahead of The Best FIFA Football Awards 2019 at Excelsior Hotel Gallia on September 23, 2019 in Milan, Italy. (Photo by Michael Regan - FIFA/FIFA via Getty Images) | FIFA via Getty Images Real Madrid and Inter Milan will renew a historic European rivalry later this month, albeit in a more nostalgic setting, when the two clubs’ legends meet at the Santiago Bernabéu for the Corazón Classic Match. The charity fixture, scheduled for June 13, will see Real Madrid Leyendas face Inter Legends, with proceeds going toward the Real Madrid Foundation’s social and sporting projects. Francesco Toldo, one of Inter’s most iconic former goalkeepers and now head of the club’s Legends Project, spoke to AS ahead of the match and reflected on the shared history between the two clubs. For Toldo, Real Madrid and Inter are connected not only by trophies and star players, but also by a shared idea of footballing ambition.“Inter and Real Madrid are perhaps the two teams that have invested the most in quality in recent history. Look at the Moratti family, father and son… Yes, since the sixties they haven’t stopped buying stars to forge the Nerazzurri’s history. Madrid, even more so, and that’s demonstrated by the many trophies they’ve won. They share the same passion for football and its beauty.”Toldo also pointed to the long list of players who have represented both clubs.“I think that when you watch historical videos of these two teams, a bit of romanticism comes over you. Yes, Real Madrid has won more, but the passion is identical. Ronaldo, Figo, Cambiasso, Seedorf, Roberto Carlos, Zamorano, and Santiago Solari have all played for both. Borja Valero too. They were fortunate enough to be part of these two historic squads of European football.”The match will also bring Toldo back to the Bernabéu, a stadium that holds special meaning for Inter supporters. It was there, in 2010, that José Mourinho’s team defeated Bayern Munich to complete the treble.“Forgive me if I say something unpopular, but when you’re a professional—at least that’s how I see it—you don’t see the difference between a top-level stadium and the one in the Italian parish where we all grew up. When the referee blows the whistle, honestly, we don’t care if 100,000 people are watching or none at all. We’re focused. This is what we do. We know it, and we’re very well-trained. But yes, the Bernabéu was the stadium where we beat Bayern, but it’s also the place where you can always face top-level footballers. For me, that’s the ultimate challenge, the thrill, the essence of Italian football. A place where you know you’ll be facing the best goalkeeper in the world or one of the best strikers on the planet. That’s how I envision a stadium of a certain magnitude, although I repeat, the excitement is identical if you truly love football.”Unsurprisingly, Mourinho was another major topic of conversation. “I don’t know if you believe me, but I’ve been out of the football world since I retired. I don’t follow it closely anymore. Yes, José Mourinho changed teams several times, but I’m completely out of the loop. If you ask me how I remember him, I’d say, perhaps, among the three best ever. Maybe even number one in the world in terms of human, psychological, and technical ability. For me, I repeat, he’s the best of all, without a doubt. Then there’s also Sacchi—with Italy—and Helenio Herrera, another one who also made history at Inter. Yes, Arrigo revolutionized Italian football, but what Mourinho did was… A man prepared in every aspect. I quickly clicked with him. I sacrificed my career to lend a hand to the dressing room, drawing on my experience, in the pursuit of victory. I’d been wanting to retire for a while, but I stayed on for this purpose. That fantastic group might have triumphed without me too, but I decided to sacrifice myself for them and for Inter. It’s been an honor for me.”Toldo also recalled a previous legends match at Tottenham’s stadium, where Mourinho, then Spurs manager, accepted an invitation to serve as his assistant coach for the day. “I called him once when we went to play with the Inter legends at Tottenham’s new stadium. He was coaching there, but he agreed to be my assistant coach. I might do the same in Madrid if he’s there. I’ll call him so he can come to the dressing room and say hello to his Inter friends. From the Treble-winning team, we are Zanetti, Cambiasso, Maicon, Lucio, and Paolo Orlandoni (third-choice goalkeeper back then, behind Toldo and Julio César).”

6 Rare Soccer Cards That Have Unbelievable Values
Mick HauptSoccer is back in the spotlight as the 2026 FIFA World Cup heads to the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19. It’s the kind of global event that can wake up collectors everywhere. Soccer cards are serious collectibles, with some rare pieces selling for more than $1 million. Here are six rare soccer cards that show why the market is so massive.2004–05 Panini Mega Cracks Lionel Messi Rookie Card #71Credit: eBayOne of the most expensive, if not the most expensive, rare soccer cards in the world is the Panini Mega Cracks Lionel Messi Rookie Card from 2004. According to Fanatics Collect, a PSA 10 copy sold publicly for a whopping $960,000 in September 2025. However, a separate report from Qazinform stated a private sale value of $1.5 million. The latter was also through Fanatics Collect, but their private sales network. This isn’t a card you’ll be stumbling across any time soon. It’s a Spanish-only issue, and Fanatics states that only 19 top-grade examples existed at the time of the 2025 sale. 1958 Alifabolaget Pelé Rookie Card #635Credit: PSALong before the era of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, there were sensational players like Pelé. The Brazilian star, who is credited with actually inventing skills and shots in the game, has huge value that collectors covet. Card Ladder reported that a Swedish-issued Pelé card sold in 2022 for a massive $1.33 million. The card had a grade of PSA 9 and showed the superstar as a teenager at roughly the time of Brazil’s 1958 World Cup fame. CGC Cards called the card one of the earliest collectibles from Pelé’s career, making it all the more valuable. Collectors on the hunt for classic cards may need to pick them up with lower grades, as vintage copies are rare. 2003 Panini Sports Mega Craques Cristiano Ronaldo Rookie Card #137Credit: eBayI always like cards that catch a legend before the world fully knows what’s coming. This one shows Cristiano Ronaldo at Sporting CP, before Manchester United, Real Madrid, and the CR7 brand became unavoidable. QP Market Network reports a $319,800 public auction peak for the PSA 10 version, while CGC Cards calls it one of Ronaldo’s most valuable cards and his first major-brand issue from his debut pro season. Collectors want certified copies with the highest grades possible within their price range. If buying rare soccer cards, look out for counterfeits, color issues, stock differences, and washed-out printing. 2014 Panini Prizm World Cup Gold Prizm Lionel Messi #12Credit: eBaySerial-numbered to just 10 copies, this card shows Lionel Messi with Argentina during the 2014 World Cup cycle, the year Argentina reached the final. Bleacher Report reported that a PSA 10 Gold Prizm sold for $522,000 at auction in April 2022. SportsCardsPro also lists the print run as 10, which is why collectors treat this as a modern Messi monster. The big things to check are surface scratches, print lines, centering, and the grade on rare soccer cards. Chrome-style cards can look beautiful in a slab, but flaws show up fast under light. 1977 Futbol Diego Maradona Rookie Card #11Credit: eBayPrinted in Argentina, this card shows a young Diego Maradona before he became one of the most famous players in sports history. Public.com found that a PSA 7 copy sold for $157,200 at Goldin Auctions in March 2021, and it noted that only two copies had earned PSA 8 out of a PSA population of 41 at the time. That’s why collectors don’t always demand perfection with older and rarer cards. A clean PSA 7 can still be a prize. When it comes to cards, condition is everything, with buyers watching edges, paper quality, centering, fading, and any sign the card was handled roughly. 2024 Topps Chrome UEFA Euro Auto SuperFractor Lamine Yamal 1/1Credit: eBayConsider this Topps Chrome, a modern grail for collectors. This one shows Lamine Yamal during his rise with Spain. Sports Illustrated reported that his 2024 Topps Chrome UEFA EURO SuperFractor Auto 1/1 sold through Goldin for $396,500, setting a new record for a Yamal card. Only one copy exists, and that is the whole chase for high-end collectors. The card also carries the National Debut stamp, which SI states marks his first-year Spanish national team offering.

Who is Chris MacFarland? Avalanche GM granted permission to speak to Predators
The Nashville Predators have been granted permission to speak to Colorado Avalanche general manager Chris MacFarland, adding another name to their general manager search.MacFarland has been the general manager for the Colorado Avalanche since 2022, working under president of hockey operations Joe Sakic. The Predators are searching for a replacement for general manager Barry Trotz, who announced his retirement on Feb. 2.It's unclear whether MacFarland would be interviewing for the general manager position, which would be a lateral move, or as the Predators' president of hockey operations, which would be a promotion. Either way, MacFarland is an executive with proven success in the NHL. He would be an impressive outside hire for the Predators.Who is Chris MacFarland? Colorado Avalanche general managerMacFarland, 56, has been with Colorado since 2015, when he was named assistant general manager. In 2022, he took over the general manager position from Sakic, after Sakic's promotion to president of hockey operations. While with Colorado, the Avalanche have built a loaded roster that includes Hart Trophy winner Nathan MacKinnon and two-time Norris Trophy winner Cale Makar. MacFarland is directly credited with signing MacKinnon to an eight-year deal in 2022, but he also worked alongside Sakic during the Avalanche's rebuild era — an era that developed MacKinnon into a super star and added Makar, Mikko Rantanen, and others to the roster.MacFarland also oversaw several key trades, including sending Matt Duchene to Ottawa in 2018 in exchange for three draft picks and defenseman Samuel Girard in a three-team deal.LONG WAIT: Why Predators owner Bill Haslam is taking his time with GM searchColorado's success over the last decade is undeniable. After a last place finish in 2017, the Avalanche have made the playoffs nine consecutive seasons (2018-2026) and won the Stanley Cup in 2022. Accurately assigning credit for that success is difficult, but MacFarland had a role during all of it, which should count for something.Prior to his time in Colorado, MacFarland was director of hockey operations and assistant general manager with the Columbus Blue Jackets for 14 seasons (2000-2015). According to the Avalanche website, MacFarland has "worked in nearly every facet of the organization including scouting at the professional and amateur level, player contract negotiations, salary cap management and arbitration, collective bargaining agreement administration, budgeting and team scheduling issues." A New York native, MacFarland played hockey at Pace University, where he received a bachelor’s degree in business in 1992 and a law degree in 1998. He began his career as an intern in the NHL’s New York office from 1993-94 and also worked in the NHL's productions office.Alex Daugherty is the Predators beat writer for The Tennessean. Arsenal fans buy Gabriel shirts after final miss
Arsenal fans buy Gabriel shirts after final missArsenal fans have shown their support for Gabriel Magalhaes in more way than one this weekend, following the defender’s decisive spot-kick miss on Saturday.Photo by David Ramos/Getty ImagesGabriel Magalhaes missed the last penalty in Arsenal’s Champions League final defeat to Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday, ending the shootout and crowning the French club champions of the competition. But to suggest that Gabriel cost Arsenal the chance at the trophy would be disingenuous and incorrect. The centre-back was outstanding throughout the 120 minutes to even earn Arsenal a shot at penalties, and he’s been one of the club’s best players in 2025/26 to help them to two finals and the Premier League trophy.Photo by Justin Setterfield/Getty ImagesSo it should be no surprise that Arsenal fans have rallied to Gabriel’s side, with James McNicholas and Nnamdi Onyeagwara reporting for The Athletic that shirt sales for the player went up 350% over the weekend, becoming the team’s top-selling name printed. At one point, Gabriel’s shirt reportedly doubled any other shirt being sold. That was in addition to all the support fans showed at the parade on Sunday, with many holding signs with the player’s name and singing his chant.Photo by Alex Pantling/Getty ImagesGabriel is a fan favourite in north London, and for good reason. He’s the kind of no-nonsense defender that fans of Premier League clubs love, but he’s also good in possession and a massive threat in the opposition penalty area.Away from the pitch, the centre-back has regularly re-committed to Arsenal, signing contract extensions before many of his teammates do, putting faith in the project and ultimately reaping the reward of Premier League success.Gabriel is also one of the first to defend Arsenal online, making sure to hit back against anyone mocking the Gunners.Someone who goes above and beyond in his role, who is loyal, and who backs his club like a fan. That’s about all you can dream of in an Arsenal player.Anyone can miss a penalty, but very few can match what Gabriel gives to his club.

Why ESPN named Michigan football a recruiting winner
Usually, Michigan football's biggest recruiting month is June, but new Wolverines head coach Kyle Whittingham wasn't content to wait around until official visit season to fill out the foundation of the 2026 recruiting class. The maize and blue added most of the players who will likely be considered the cornerstones of the class in May, but the whole of the spring was impressive. From flipping quarterback Kamden Lopati from Illinois, to winning wide receiver Quentin Burrell, to flipping tight end Colt Lumpris from Alabama, there were some impressive moves made this spring. And ESPN is taking notice. In its summer recruiting primer, ESPN added a section that delineated the spring recruiting winners, and the Wolverines were one of five schools to be mentioned, along with Notre Dame, Texas A&M, Miami, and UCLA.Four-star tight end Colt Lumpris was recruited by Sherrone Moore and his staff before he committed to Alabama last December. After Moore's firing and the subsequent hiring of coach Kyle Whittingham, Lumpris started hearing from the Wolverines again ... and again ... and again.Led by tight ends coach Freddie Whittingham, Michigan was persistent with Lumpris this spring all the way through to his flip from the Crimson Tide last weekend."The way that they're recruiting is if they want a guy, they're going to go get 'em," said Lumpris, No. 218 overall. "They pushed hard for me. This new staff makes you feel like a priority."One of 13 additions to the Wolverines' class since March 1, Lumpris' pledge came as part of an aggressive push from Whittingham and his staff following their arrival from Utah in December. The Wolverines made use of its Utah ties to pull off their biggest splash of the offseason, flipping No. 2 overall quarterback Lopati, of Salt Lake City, from Illinois in April. He'll arrive on campus alongside recent offensive tackle additions Sidney Rouleau (No. 132 overall) and Jakari Lipsey (No. 265) as well as four-star wide receiver pledge Quentin Burrell (No. 56).Four-star cornerback Tavares Harrington (No. 102 overall) and defensive end Xavier Muhammad (No. 132) followed Moore-era edge rush pledge Recarder Kitchen into the program's incoming defensive class last month. Dobson (No. 7) and Blake Jenkins (No. 198) remain a pair of priority targets for the Wolverines, with both prospects scheduled for visits in June. The only bad news of the past month was losing out on linebacker Ethan Hauser to Vanderbilt and safety Maxwell Miles flipping to Minnesota on Sunday. But otherwise, the maize and blue have done about as well as they could have done in the past two months. Here is the current class as it stands, ranked by the Rivals Industry Ranking:Chicago (Ill.) Mount Carmel four-star WR Quentin Burrell (No. 85 overall)Houston (Tx.) South four-star DL Xavier Muhammad (No. 102 overall)Kalamazoo (Mich.) Brandon four-star RB Tyson Robinson (No. 212 overall)Lawrenceville (N.J.) School four-star TE Colt Lumpris (No. 268 overall)Riverside (Calif.) Notre Dame four-star CB Darius Johnson (No. 311 overall)Indianapolis (Ind.) four-star EDGE Jayce Brewer (No. 361 overall)Gatineau (Quebec) Brook Hill three-star IOL Sidney Rouleau (No. 424 overall)Saline (Mich.) three-star IOL Louis Esposito (No. 601 overall)Orlando (Fla.) Lake Nona three-star S Charles Woodson Jr. (No. 617 overall)Buford (Ga.) three-star LB Brayden Watson (No. 787 overall)Grand Rapids (Mich.) Marco Silva to leave Fulham as Benfica links grow
Marco Silva has revealed he will leave Fulham amid links to Benfica (Adrian Dennis)Fulham manager Marco Silva has announced he will leave the Premier League club amid reports he is set to take charge at Portuguese side Benfica.Silva is reported to have entered talks with Benfica about replacing Jose Mourinho, who has been lined up for a second spell at Real Madrid. The 48-year-old, whose contract expires in June, has not revealed his next destination, but will depart Craven Cottage "this summer". Silva's five-year reign with Fulham had made him the third longest-serving boss in the Premier League. In an open letter to Fulham supporters, the Portuguese coach said: "To our fans, I asked you, from day one, to always be with us. And that's what you did these past five years. We achieved a lot together."My staff and I always felt your support. It will never be forgotten. Fulham will always be in my heart, and sooner or later I will be back at Craven Cottage."Fulham owner Shahid Khan said the club will appoint "a new leader in a timely but deliberate manner, who will meet the standards of our club and expectations of our fans throughout the world".Having previously managed Everton, Watford, Hull, Olympiacos and Benfica's local rivals Sporting Lisbon, Silva made an immediate impact in west London. He guided Fulham to the Championship title in 2021-22 to seal promotion to the Premier League.Silva then secured a top-half finish in the following campaign before steering Fulham to their record Premier League points tally of 54 in 2025.Fulham also reached the League Cup semi-finals for the first time in their history in 2024.The Cottagers finished 11th in the Premier League this season, missing out on European qualification, while Benfica came third in the Portuguese top-flight under Mourinho."Marco Silva leaves our club with my gratitude and best wishes. Fulham and Marco were an excellent fit for five seasons, but change is inevitable in this game, and we've accordingly prepared for this moment," Khan said."The talent in our squad, our historic home ground of Craven Cottage, our faithful supporters, and my commitment to backing the club, all make Fulham an extraordinarily attractive destination for an incoming head coach."smg/ea

Malachi Toney's stellar season lands him College Football 27 cover
Safe to say there are expectations for Malachi Toney after a record-setting freshman season. The Miami football star will be one of three cover athletes for College Football 27, the latest installment of EA Sports' wildly popular video game series.Orlando-based EA Sports made the news official June 2 with a teaser for the game's first look June 4. Toney flashes the iconic U front and center on the image, flanked by Ole Miss running back Kewan Lacy and Oregon quarterback Dante Moore. It's the first time dating back to EA's original run of college football games dating to 1996 that a Hurricane will grace the cover. Florida has had two cover athletes (Danny Wuerffel on NCAA Football 98 and Tim Tebow on NCAA Football 11) and Florida State boasts one (Chris Weinke on NCAA Football 2002).Kewan Lacy. Malachi Toney. Dante Moore.Your #CFB27 cover athletes are officially here.Full reveal Thursday, 6/4 at 8 PM ET🔗: https://t.co/6mLj03LkTzpic.twitter.com/uZhCVXCo2Q— EASPORTSCollege (@EASPORTSCollege) June 2, 2026Toney got the nod after bursting onto the scene as Miami's explosive do-everything offensive weapon as a 17-year-old freshman who would go on to lead the nation and break the school record with 109 catches. The Liberty City native also broke the Canes record with 1,211 receiving yards, good for fifth in the country. He accounted for 13 total touchdowns: 10 receiving, one rushing and two passing (he played quarterback at American Heritage High School). If that's not enough, he also terrified punt units with dazzling plays as a returner, mostly notably coming within 5 yards of a return touchdown in the College Football Playoff at Texas A&M.With Toney as the game-changing playmaker, the Hurricanes went 10-2 in the regular season and made the CFP for the first time after just missing out the year prior. The freshman was quiet over UM's first two playoff games, though he still scored the only touchdown in a 10-3 road win at the Aggies. But he found his groove in the Fiesta Bowl semifinal against Lacy's Rebels with 92 total yards and a 36-yard catch-and-run touchdown to punch Miami's ticket to the national championship game. In front of his hometown fans, Toney led all receivers with 10 receptions for 122 yards and a fourth-quarter touchdown in a losing effort to Indiana and fellow South Florida native Fernando Mendoza. The cover announcement also gave fans a glimpse at Toney's new look for the upcoming season. After sporting No. 10 last year, the most dangerous player on the Canes will be wearing No. 1 for the 2026-27 season. That number was worn last year by fellow wideout Joshisa Trader, who transferred to North Carolina State.Toney will have a new QB this season, with Duke transfer Darian Mensah replacing the graduated Carson Beck. Miami opens the season at Stanford on Sept. 4.This article originally appeared on Palm Beach Post: Miami football's Malachi Toney on EA Sports College Football 27 cover

Knicks vs. Spurs NBA Finals: Legacies on the line
We have reached the 2026 NBA Finals, featuring the Eastern Conference champion New York Knicks and West champion San Antonio Spurs, which means it is time for our annual rundown of legacies on the line in this edition of the championship series. And there is plenty hanging in the balance. The Knicks, playing in the league’s largest media market, have not won since 1973, while the five-time champion Spurs, featuring the NBA’s largest player, 7-foot-4 Victor Wembanyama, are trying to forge a new dynasty. So, let’s get to it: The legacies on the line in the 2026 NBA Finals.Victor Wembanyama, San Antonio SpursWe don’t have to decide right now whether Victor Wembanyama will be the GOAT. We have plenty of time to debate that. But if he were to win a title this year — at the age of 22, in just his third season — he will certainly be on a GOAT trajectory.Consider this: Wembanyama is the NBA’s unanimous Defensive Player of the Year — the league’s best player on that end by far, having just vanquished the runner-up, Oklahoma City Thunder big man Chet Holmgren, in the Western Conference finals.Wemby finished third in MVP voting and just defeated the back-to-back regular-season MVP (and reigning Finals MVP), Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, in that same series.Only a handful of players have flirted with MVPs and titles — and, hence, the Best Player Alive moniker — in their first three seasons: Bill Russell (two-time champion and one-time MVP in his first three seasons), Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (two-time MVP and one-time champ in his first three seasons), Magic Johnson (two-time champion and two-time Finals MVP in his first three seasons), Larry Bird (one-time champ and two-time MVP runner-up in his first three seasons) and Tim Duncan (third in MVP, a champion and the Finals MVP in 1999, his second season). All of them, maybe with the exception of Duncan, were on a GOAT trajectory, and even he won five rings. Bird’s three titles are the least among them, and that will be the floor for Wemby, then, if he gets one so early into his career. The ceiling? GOAT. Yes, it is on the table.Jalen Brunson, New York KnicksThere are those, including a number of smart basketball people (i.e., Becky Hammon), who believed the Knicks would not win a championship, so long as Jalen Brunson was their lead operator, because they thought — and history told us this — that it was almost impossible to win a title with a diminutive point guard as a roster’s superstar.Only Stephen Curry, the greatest shooter to ever live, and Isiah Thomas, also one of the handful of best point guards in the sport’s history, have met those parameters. Both creators had incredible ensembles around them, as does Brunson in New York.Never before did we consider Brunson among the all-time greatest point guards. Curry and Thomas, of course, won multiple titles as the best player on their teams, but beyond them, at least among traditional point guards (excluding bigger guys like Magic Johnson, Oscar Robertson or even Gilgeous-Alexander), who wouldn’t trade careers with Brunson, should he win Finals MVP, ending a 53-year title drought?Play 2026 Soccer Pick 'Em with FOX One and make your picks for the world's biggest soccer tournamentWould Steve Nash have given up his two MVPs to win a title with the Phoenix Suns? (And that’s not even New York — the biggest media market in this hemisphere.) You’d have to ask him. Surely, Chris Paul would swap his 11 All-NBA selections and four top-five MVP finishes for Brunson’s three All-NBA nods, a single top-five MVP finish, a ring (for the Knicks, no less) and the chance to be 29 again, with that title behind him.John Stockton, for all his accomplishments as a playmaker, wasn’t the best player on either of his Utah Jazz teams that made the Finals. Jason Kidd twice made the Finals as the New Jersey Nets’ best player, but never got over the hump — until he was a 36-year-old role player for the 2011 Dallas Mavericks. Wherever Brunson is to land, this is the territory in which he could reside, along with his predecessor, Walt Frazier, the point guard of the 1973 champion Knicks, among the best point guards to ever do it.Were Brunson to lose, it’s not like he would tumble down the point guard rankings. He has still done something we rarely see. Think of Gary Payton as one of the few great point guards to be the best player on a team that could even reach the Finals. But there are levels to this, even between truly great point guards and all-timers, and titles often differentiate in these debates. Brunson has a case to make in front of him.De’Aaron Fox, San Antonio SpursOften times, players in Fox’s position — drafted by the Sacramento Kings — languish on terrible teams for some time, spending their whole careers in search of a winning atmosphere, or pivoting to some other, probably more individual, professional goal.Think of someone like Baron Davis, who was drafted to the Charlotte Hornets, found his way to a pre-dynasty Golden State team, and it never got better for him than the We Believe Warriors (who weren’t all that different from Fox’s Light the Beam Kings).Davis made plenty of money (almost $150 million), but there was something missing from his career, something that separated him from Hall of Fame point guards: wins. But you are more likely as a multi-time All-Star point guard to live the life of a Stephon Marbury, starring for moribund outfits, playing yourself out of the league, than to be, say, Dennis Johnson, landing in the perfect spot (not just once, with the late-1970s Seattle SuperSonics, but twice, again with the 1980s Boston Celtics).Credit Fox’s agent, Klutch Sports founder Rich Paul, for steering his client to the Spurs, who had both the money to give Fox a maximum contract and Wembanyama, someone who is about to change the league, capable of carrying a contender at 22.Whether Fox is in San Antonio for the long term will depend more on how much they’re willing to pay him in addition guards Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper, but only 18 point guards in NBA history have won a title and made an All-Star team in the same season. Of the 14 who are eligible for the Hall of Fame, 12 of them made it.So, in a span of less than 18 months, Fox went from one of the worst situations in the entire league, where legacies go to die, to one of its best, where a legacy is possible. Let this be instructive to all star players stuck in bad situations: fit is everything in the NBA, and sometimes the best one is within arm’s reach if you just see the vision.James Dolan, New York KnicksLet’s just say James Dolan, the owner of the Knicks, and his team’s fans haven’t had the best relationship over the years. New Yorkers have often called for him to sell the team — loudly, inside and outside Madison Square Garden — and he has sometimes treated critics as his enemy in return, memorably calling a fan “an a**hole,” another “a hateful mess,” and running beloved Knicks enforcer Charles Oakley from the building.Dolan presided over almost a quarter-century of futility in New York. His Knicks missed the playoffs every season from 2005-10, an era that coincided with a sexual harassment lawsuit against the franchise, and again from 2014-20. Only Carmelo Anthony could resuscitate the Knicks from death’s door — until Brunson arrived. That is about when Dolan handed the keys over to executive Leon Rose, removing himself from the day-to-day basketball business, and he has largely stayed out of the headlines, other than when he delivers a dissenting voice against most NBA reforms. Now, if the Knicks were to win, you would at least expect him to be welcomed a little more friendlier at whatever cocktail parties a billionaire in New York gets invited to, even if most fans in the city will keep holding a grudge against him. But who knows? Maybe there will be a few less boos at Dolan’s next JD and the Straight Shot concert.Dylan Harper, San Antonio SpursHarper, a 20-year-old rookie, is averaging 13.1 points (on 53/36/85 shooting splits), 5.3 rebounds and 2.6 assists in 460 playoff minutes as an integral member of the Spurs. Only six rookies in NBA history have played 400 or more playoff minutes on a title run: Manu Ginobili (2003), Sam Cassell (1994), Magic Johnson (1980), Johnny Davis (1977), Jamaal Wilkes (1975) and Bill Russell (1957). All but Davis went on to make an All-Star team. Four enjoyed Hall of Fame careers. (How unfair is it that these Spurs feature facsimiles to Duncan and Ginobili on another potential budding dynasty!)Harper’s father, Ron, won five titles with the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers. If Dylan were to win, they would become the sixth father-son duo to each win a championship, joining Matt Guokas Sr. and Matt Guokas Jr., Rick and Brent Barry, Bill and Luke Walton, Mychal and Klay Thompson, and Gary Payton and Gary Payton II.The Harpers’ six titles as a tandem would tie the Thompsons for the most among father-son duos. Given that Dylan is only 20 years old, and on Wemby’s team, might they have a shot to become the most successful father-son duo in NBA history?Karl-Anthony Towns, New York KnicksBe honest: For much of Karl-Anthony Towns’ career — for the entirety of his tenure on the Minnesota Timberwolves, and even for much of his time with the Knicks — you thought he was kind of unserious in a basketball sense. The 7-footer fouled too often. He shot too much as a big. He didn’t defend well enough. He projected false bravado.Whatever it was, you had thoughts on Towns, and they most likely weren’t the kinds that ended in a title. And he’s been dismantling our opinion of him one win at a time.At the end of this run, in a couple of weeks, Towns could be a six-time All-Star with a ring. And how many six-time All-Stars with titles are not in the Hall of Fame? None.Stephon Castle, San Antonio SpursIf Wembanyama is doing things only Tim Duncan and few others have done, and Harper is doing things only Many Ginobili and few others have done, does that make Castle the Tony Parker of this trio? Parker won a title as a starter in San Antonio’s backcourt in his second season at the age of 20, and Castle could do the same at 21.Parker spun his early success as a complement to Duncan and Ginobili into six All-Star appearances, four rings and a Hall of Fame career. This is the path forward for Castle, who we can absolutely expect to be a mainstay in the All-Star conversation every season for a while, especially if he wins a title. In fact, after Jamal Murray made the All-Star team for the first time in his career, Castle might immediately pick up the mantle as The Best Player Not to Make an All-Star Team — until he makes his first.By the way, 21-year-olds who won a title averaging at least a 15-5-5 (Castle is averaging a 19-5-7 so far): Magic Johnson and Kobe Bryant. That’s it. That’s the list.Literally everyone on the KnicksThat’s right: Everyone on the Knicks, and that includes you, Tyler Kolek, would be able to dine in New York forever on a title. John Starks and Latrell Sprewell already get courtside seats to whatever Knicks game they want, and they only made the Finals. Imagine what perks come with winning a championship in the city that never sleeps.Consider Bill Bradley, a wing for those 1973 Knicks, who spun his popularity into three terms as a U.S. Senator in New Jersey. I’m pretty sure my dad, a childhood fan of the Knicks, voted Bradley as a write-in candidate for president once or twice in the ‘90s.Forget being the next Clyde Frazier, color commentating for the Knicks in a job for life, might Josh Hart be New York’s next governor? Why stop there, President Hart?A reservation for two at Eric Ripert’s three-Michelin-starred Le Bernardin? Anything for Landry Shamet. Carriage rides across Central Park? Unlimited for Ariel Hukporti. Mitchell Robinson cuts the line any time for ice skating in Rockefeller Center. You get the point. OG Anunoby and Mikal Bridges won’t just be champions. They’ll be gods.Mitch Johnson, San Antonio SpursSan Antonio legend Gregg Popovich belongs on the Mount Rushmore of coaches, along with Red Auerbach, Pat Riley and Phil Jackson. Following any of them is no easy encore, but the 39-year-old Johnson has done about as well as anyone could possibly do in his position, taking the Spurs back to the Finals in his second season.(Well, save for Bill Russell, who took over as player-coach from Auerbach in the late 1960s and delivered two more championships. You are far more likely to be, say, Tim Floyd, who inherited the Chicago Bulls from Jackson, driving them into the ground.)It is helpful, of course, to have Wembanyama on your side. He and the 39-year-old head coach could be in each other’s lives for some time, just as Pop shepherded Duncan’ career. (The parallels between these Spurs and the dynastic edition are kind of wild; just as crazy as the similarities between these Knicks and the 1973 version.)For the record, Johnson could become the fifth coach since the 1976 NBA-ABA merger to win a title before his 40th birthday, joining Joe Mazzulla (35), Riley (37), Tyronn Lue (39) and Billy Cunningham (39). Only Mazzulla and Johnson did not play in the NBA. (Perhaps there is a trend developing here, identifying great coaches early.)Likewise, with a title, Johnson would join Lue, Steve Kerr and Nick Nurse as recent head coaches to win a title in their first season as the lead man on any NBA bench.Mike Brown, New York KnicksBrown has been kind of ubiquitous in the NBA for a quarter-century, only not always as a head coach. He was an assistant to Popovich on the 2003 champion Spurs. He was an assistant to Rick Carlisle on the Indiana Pacers during the Malice at the Palace (which may have cost him another ring). And he was an assistant to Kerr on the Golden State Warriors teams that won championships in 2017, 2018 and 2022.His stints as a head coach have been rockier, though he led LeBron James’ Cavaliers to the 2007 NBA Finals and won Coach of the Year twice — in Cleveland in 2009 and in Sacramento in 2023. Brown was also twice fired from the Cavs, once fired from Kobe Bryant’s Lakers in 2013 and even fired from Fox’s Kings less than two years ago.He wasn’t New York’s first choice, either. Before settling on Brown to lead the team, the Knicks had a handful of interview requests to replace Tom Thibodeau rejected. Now, in one year on this job, Brown has already helped forge another bit of basketball history, leading the Knicks to the Finals for the first time since 1999. A title of his own would not only solidify him as one of the great coaches of the last 25 years, but it would make Brown — like his players — a king in New York for all time.Brian Wright, San Antonio SpursThis past summer, when we last released our rankings of each NBA team’s lead executive, using The Danny Ainge System, we had a surprise No. 1: Brian Wright. It made plenty of sense. Sure, San Antonio’s general manager lucked into Wemby, but look at what he had built around the Frenchman — a team loaded with draft picks, a ton of young talent and some veteran depth, and we didn’t even know how good Harper was going to be yet. It turns out Wright hit another draft pick on the money.Like Johnson following Pop on the bench, it cannot be easy inheriting the lead shot-caller role in San Antonio’s front office, but somehow Wright spun forward another potential dynasty in this small media market. Something’s in that river in San Antonio.Leon Rose, New York KnicksRose, a former player agent, is somewhat of a mysterious figure in New York. He has not met with the media for a solo press conference since taking the job in April 2020.Not that Rose has had much to answer for. He signed Brunson. He traded for Towns, Anunoby, Bridges, Hart and Jose Alvarado. He drafted Deuce McBride. He has built this team entirely from scratch, inheriting a 21-win team in the middle of a pandemic. Now, he has a chance to become a legendarily mysterious figure in New York, and maybe then he will accept praise in public. Or enjoy perks from behind closed doors.Harrison Barnes and Luke Kornet, San Antonio SpursBarnes won a title with the Warriors in 2015, and Kornet won one with the Celtics in 2024. Both have a chance to join guys like Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Danny Green and James Posey as recent role players to win multiple rings with multiple teams.Jeremy Sochan, New York KnicksDoes Sochan, who was waived by the Spurs in February, only to sign with the Knicks two days later, get a ring either way? Drop us a line if you can think of any other players ever in a similar situation. Enjoy the Finals. It should be quite a show.

Aryna Sabalenka, Diana Taurasi among women's sports stars investing in WTGL
WTGL is gaining financial support from other female athletes across several different sports.Trybe Ventures, the league's primary capital partner, announced seven new investors on Tuesday: World No. 1 tennis player Aryna Sabalenka, basketball icon Diana Taurasi and two-time Olympic hockey gold medalist Hilary Knight, along with four other WNBA stars in Breanna Stewart, Nneka Ogwumike, Napheesa Collier and Gabriela Jaquez. They all joined three women's soccer legends, Alex Morgan, Mia Hamm and Abby Wambach, who were already involved in the investment group, which was co-founded by Morgan. “It’s an honor to be a part of this investment supporting WTGL and helping grow women’s golf in a new and innovative way with a team-based format in a traditionally individual sport,” Sabalenka said in a press release. “Women’s sports are experiencing incredible growth, and leagues like WTGL are shaping the future by creating new opportunities to connect athletes and fans.”WTGL is set to begin later this year and will feature teams of LPGA players competing in a high-tech indoor golf league at the SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida — the same venue the men's TGL has occupied since its launch in 2024. Both the TGL and WTGL are operated by TMRW Sports, a business venture co-founded by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy. “This group of athletes and business leaders that Trybe Ventures has assembled reinforces the momentum behind WTGL and the broader opportunity in women’s sports,” TMRW Sports CEO Mike McCarley said in the release. “All these women have helped shape culture and push women’s sports forward in meaningful ways. Their involvement reflects the confidence we all share in WTGL’s potential to create a compelling new global platform for women’s team golf.”Charley Hull, Lydia Ko, Jeeno Thitikul, Lexi Thompson and Michelle Wie West are among the 14 LPGA stars committed to participate in WTGL's inaugural season. But the biggest star in women's golf, world No. 1 Nelly Korda, is not slated to compete in WTGL. The three-time major champion criticized the fact that a separate indoor league was created for the women as opposed to having them compete alongside the men, calling it a "huge and unbelievable miss."There is no launch date set for WTGL, but it's expected to start sometime this fall. TMRW Sports said more details on team rosters, ownership groups and media partners will be released "in the coming months."Nick Stavas is a digital producer and commerce writer for Golfweek. Baseball players’ chief says union ‘has never been broken’ and will fight MLB’s salary cap proposal
NEW YORK — The head of the baseball players’ association insisted his union will fight management’s salary cap proposal as long as it takes as negotiations proceed with the threat of a lockout that could cancel games next season.Major League Baseball proposed a salary cap and appears set to start a lockout after the current labor contract expires Dec. 1.“Our union has never been broken and never will be,” interim executive director Bruce Meyer said during an online news question-and-answer session with reporters. “Our players have what they have, including being the only sport that doesn’t have this ultimate restriction, the salary cap, because our players have always been the most unified and that’s going to continue.”Baseball has had nine work stoppages since 1972, the last a 99-day lockout that slightly delayed the 2022 season. Regular-season games have not been lost since a 7 1/2-month strike in 1994-95, the last time MLB proposed a cap.The NFL has had a cap since 1994, the NBA since 1984-85 and the NHL since 2005-06.“The unions in the other sports didn’t agree to salary-cap systems because they thought it was a good thing for players. That’s not what happened,” Meyer said. “In one way or the other, they were not able to fight the way that our union has and, not criticizing anybody, it’s just a fact. Our union has always been the most solid, and that’s why our union has the best system.”Negotiators have not scheduled the next bargaining session. The union last week proposed expanded free agency and salary arbitration rights along with almost doubling the major league minimum and increasing revenue sharing.MLB’s proposal would cap team spending in 2027 at $245.3 million, using figures for luxury tax payrolls that include $20.1 million for benefits and the pre-arbitration bonus pool. It also would establish a payroll floor of $171.2 million, forcing some teams to spend more. The Los Angeles Dodgers, baseball’s biggest spenders, had a $415.2 million payroll on opening day this year — around $170 million over the proposed cap.“Our salary cap and floor proposal addresses our fans’ concerns by leveling the playing field while sharing baseball revenue with the players 50/50 like the other leagues,” MLB spokesman Glen Caplin said in a statement. “Under our proposal, major league players will receive more compensation in year one of the system than in 2026.”Los Angeles shattered MLB’s spending record with a combined $515 million in payroll and luxury tax last year en route to its second straight World Series title. Los Angeles’ total was seven times the $68.7 million payroll of Miami, the lowest-spending team, and more than the payrolls of the bottom six clubs combined.Meyer likened a cap to “Big Brother” telling a team it can’t sign a player it wants to.“At a time of exploding popularity, growth and interest, the owners’ goal is more money in the pockets of owners,” he said. “Don’t blame them for that, but that’s what it is. Whether it’s more in profits because they’re holding down labor costs or growing their franchise values.”Meyer dismissed MLB’s contention that payroll disparity causes fans of lower-spending teams to lose hope. No small-market team has won the World Series since the 2015 Kansas City Royals.“We do not accept the premise that there’s some existential crisis going on,” he said. “People are still lining up to buy these teams, to get in whether as a minority investor or otherwise, and that’s because the sport is extremely healthy.”He pointed out lower-payroll teams do reach the 12-team playoffs and Cincinnati got in last year while the New York Mets did not. Six postseason teams had payrolls above $200 million last year, and MLB emphasizes high-spending teams usually dominate the later rounds.“We don’t want money to be taken away from teams that want to spend it and give it to teams that don’t want to spend it,” Meyer said. “We want to encourage more San Diegos. San Diego is a small-market team that went out, decided to compete, signed a lot of players, turned around their franchise.”MLB’s proposal calls for a 50-50 split with players of defined revenue, including for player spending on signing bonuses for players from high school and college, and international amateurs agreeing to initial contracts.“It’s not even a real 50%. It’s taking billions of dollars off the top before they’re proposing to even share any of that,” Meyer said. “Players’ share under their proposal would go down. Players’ share for this season, 2026, is projected to be well over 50%. ... Had MLB’s proposal been in place in 2026, players would, we estimate — would lose over half a billion dollars.”He faulted MLB for how it defined revenue and spending.“Their proposal of course excludes things like expansion fees, franchise values, the place where they make their most money,” he said. “Their proposal deducts billions of dollars in expenses ... so it’s not even a real 50%.”“They’ve effectively managed to cobble together the worst system for players in any of the major sports, and not even close,” Meyer added.Player contracts this year, using average annual values and including benefits and the pre-arbitration bonus pool, total $6.14 billion, according to MLB’s opening-day figures. Slot values for signing bonuses in this year’s amateur draft come to about $359 million and international signing bonus pools to $208 million.Under MLB’s proposal, there would be an escrow system in which players would have money withheld in the event their share of revenue rises above the specified amount. They would get more money if their share falls short.“If revenues are soft or they go down, then that means players at the end of the day won’t get the guaranteed money,” he said.Meyer also said some teams heighten disparity by not spending on players.“Every team now has the ability to put a competitive team on the field, every single team,” he said. “One of the things that I find kind of ironic in a perverse way, if team X decides we’re not going to spend money on players, well that increases the disparity in payroll.”

Anti-trans laws are killing us & making it even harder to fight back against them
We’ve said for a long time that anti-trans laws will lead to deaths in the trans community. We’ve cited studies time and again that show there are higher rates of anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation for trans people who are living in a non-affirming situation or are being denied gender-affirming care. It’s probably easy for those who want to dismiss these concerns to cast all that as abstract numbers on a page and not about real people in the world. Related The right’s outrage over Elliot Page’s casting in ‘The Odyssey’ obscures Achilles’ own queerness But more and more, we are seeing the real-world effects of these hateful laws through the real people who have lost their lives because of them, and the legal system is set up in a way that this is all going to get worse. That’s perhaps best illustrated through the lawsuit against a school bathroom ban in Idaho. The case against Idaho’s 2023 Senate Bill 1100 was dismissed last week, with both the state and Boise High School’s Sexuality and Gender Alliance agreeing to close the case. There had originally been two plaintiffs in the case, but the decision came the day that one of them graduated and therefore no longer had standing in the case to contest the ban. The other plaintiff, known in court filings only as Jane Doe, died by suicide back in January. Dive deeper every day Join our newsletter for thought-provoking commentary that goes beyond the surface of LGBTQ+ issues Subscribe to our Newsletter today While studies show that the whole situation in the country is having a negative effect on queer people’s mental health right now, it seems reasonable to think that the bathroom ban likely contributed to Doe’s death. The bill bars trans students from using the multiple occupancy restrooms, requiring them instead to go to specific single-user restrooms, which alienates trans kids from others and risks outing them to their peers. Doe is recorded having said, “It is scary having to look around before to see if anyone will see me going into the single-user restroom, as I worry about people gossiping and speculating about me being transgender. I don’t want people to know I am transgender without my consent—even students who might be friendly. For me, it is not a part of myself I talk about or that I feel is the most important part of my identity.” It’s horrific that we’re losing trans youth to bills like this, but the dismissal of the case she was fighting makes the situation doubly painful. It means that not only are bills like this killing us, once they have passed, but they’re also making it harder to fight back against them. The instance highlights just how much the legal system puts the onus of fighting back against these anti-trans attacks on the trans community itself. A group like the ACLU can’t just go to court to say that a law is unjust; a plaintiff with legal standing has to sue, even if an organization like the ACLU is helping. That means they must be personally affected by the legislation, and they must fight the case for however long it takes. In the case of a school bathroom ban, that means the plaintiff must be a trans minor attending school, and can’t graduate before the case is settled. These processes can take years, with the initial complaint in the Idaho case filed by Lambda Legal in July 2023. Beyond simply having standing, a plaintiff must be willing and able to endure the ordeal that being part of such a case entails. That can range from media attention (which is a lot of pressure, even if your name is anonymized), discussions with lawyers, and a constant reminder that you’re having to fight for such a basic right. For those in the spotlight, it means facing attempts to discredit you while assailing you with all the hate and false attacks that trans people dread dealing with in our daily lives. Just last year, Lindsay Hecox, a trans woman who was contesting Idaho’s trans athlete ban, tried to withdraw her case from the Supreme Court, even though she had already won a lower court ruling. In a statement, her attorneys explained that “Ms. Hecox has also come under negative public scrutiny from certain quarters because of this litigation, and she believes that such continued – and likely intensified – attention in the coming school year will distract her from her schoolwork and prevent her from meeting her academic and personal goals.” The system is set up so that it requires marginalized groups to put themselves in the most vulnerable position just to try to overturn some of these laws. All of this is going to get exponentially worse as these bills and rulings provide precedent for each other. The devastating Skrmetti ruling last year is now being used as justification not just to deprive trans youth of gender-affirming care, but to strip such care from adult trans people who have been incarcerated. We know that this administration has plans to strip trans people of all ages of as many rights as they can. Just in February, the head of the Heritage Foundation, who was behind Project 2025, said that he wants to “outlaw” gender-affirming care for all trans people. And the more that they get laws passed, the harder they are to undo, and the more they’ll prop each other up. These bills are killing people. That might be the plaintiff in the case. Or it might be those who are left to suffer the injustices of these laws because the legislation is left standing. Despite all of that, we keep fighting. We have painful days and massive losses, but it’s good to remember that there are still those who are picking themselves up and battling on. Even in Idaho, a lawsuit continues against a separate bathroom ban, H.B. 752, and across the nation, we’ll keep challenging these injustices. Jon Rahm Says His Job Is Playing Golf, Not Pitching LIV to Investors
Jon Rahm is not interested in taking a leading role in helping LIV Golf find new investors following the Saudi PIF’s decision to pull its funding from the league.“It would be more of a stay-in-your-lane type situation as it goes to me,” Rahm said Tuesday ahead of this week’s LIV event in his home country of Spain. Fellow LIV star Bryson DeChambeau last week said he was “very optimistic” about LIV’s business plan moving forward, and that he has “quite a few ideas” that could be interesting. “We’ll see if investors like it or not,” DeChambeau said. But Rahm is taking a different approach. “I know nothing about business,” Rahm said. “I’m never going to claim to know anything about business, and if I was in a business pitch, I would not know the first thing to say. My job is to play golf.”LIV CEO Scott O’Neil has previously said that multiple players have been offering their support in helping the league fight for survival. “If any player who knows what they’re doing is willing to do certain things like that, I think it can only help,” Rahm said. “To have insight from a player on a meeting like that can help, and I’m open for any suggestions possible, but I would also say I don’t have the free time that Bryson has to be flying around the country to attend meetings with three little ones and one on the way. Even if I wanted to, I don’t know if I could do it.”LIV last month created a new independent board led by two longtime corporate restructuring executives and hired U.S.-based Ducera Partners as its investment banking adviser—all of which have previously worked on various bankruptcy efforts for companies in financial crisis.Fellow Spaniard Sergio Garcia said Tuesday he remains “really excited about the work” that O’Neil and LIV’s new executive team is doing. “We enjoy being involved in it, giving our input and seeing how we can help make sure that the league keeps going forward,” Garcia said. “We’re very confident that that’s going to happen. It’s just going to look different. In my opinion, more than being worried about if LIV is going to keep going or the league is going to keep going, it’s more ‘How is it going to look going forward?’”The post Jon Rahm Says His Job Is Playing Golf, Not Pitching LIV to Investors appeared first on Front Office Sports.
