SPORTS.YAHOO.COMCrazy golf champ aims to make history with sixth winMarc Chapman is attempting to win his sixth World Crazy Golf Championships title this weekend [Juliette Parkin/BBC]Five-time World Crazy Golf champion Marc Chapman is hoping to make history and become the first player to win six titles. Nicknamed "The Force", Chapman is also attempting to win the world title three years in a row when he competes at Hastings on Friday."About 200 people from around the world compete for the coveted title," said Chapman, from Canterbury, Kent. "The event attracts lots of spectators.""While there is an advantage of knowing the course in Hastings well, ultimately it comes down to having solid technical skills and maintaining a strong mental game on the day."Chapman said it took him 10 years of practising and experience to win his first world title."It's all about being methodical, learning the courses and being able to putt consistently," he added.Chapman, a former fencing coach, said he was "privileged" to represent Great Britain in mini golf tournaments.Mini golf is a scaled-down version of golf which focuses on putting, while crazy golf features courses with unconventional obstacles - such as moving windmills. The Crazy Golf World Championships is due to take place at Hastings Adventure Golf from Friday to Sunday.Chapman is one of the most decorated mini golfers, having won all three UK Major Championships, known as The Triple Crown. He also won the 2011 Masters and British Open before retiring from competing on the British Tour in 2012. The Force made a return and won his first World Crazy Golf Championship in 2018, defended the title in 2019 and then won in 2021, 2024 and 2025.Film-maker Hansel Rodrigues said Marc Chapman was one of the driving forces behind the sport's growing popularity [Juliette Parkin/BBC]Film-maker Hansel Rodrigues decided to make a documentary about Chapman called King Putt, after being "charmed" by the world of crazy golf. The director said the documentary aimed to "celebrate" crazy golf and to capture the sport as both "fun and intense"."From the outside, it seems comical or insignificant, but you become drawn by the players' passion and dedication," he adds."Marc says outlandish things, comparing himself to sporting icons, but we found him to be quietly inspirational."'Larger than life'Rodrigues, who grew up in Epsom, Surrey, said: "I think interest in Crazy Golf is growing and I believe Marc is one of the people who helped inspire interest."Sports needs larger than life people to draw interest, for example Novak Djokovic and Max Verstappen."King Putt won Best Documentary at the Hastings Rocks International Film Festival and was screened across the country. APNEWS.COMTakeaways from the AP’s report on children who have been separated from their parents a second timeMirsy Maricela Alva López, right, and her children, Ederson, center, and Briseidy pose for photos at their house in San Martín Cuchumatán, Guatemala, Thursday, April 30, 2026. (AP Photo/Moises Castillo)2026-06-04T04:09:47Z In 2018, when he was just 3 years old, Ederson Galicia Alva was taken from his mother’s arms at the U.S.-Mexico border under the first Trump administration’s family separation policy and kept apart from her in a government facility for months. They were finally reunited after lawyers intervened. Then, in June of last year, he and his mother were separated a second time and ultimately sent back to Guatemala, despite legal protections meant to keep them and families like theirs together. After nearly a year in the indigenous highlands of Guatemala, Ederson’s family was finally allowed to return to Florida last week, following a federal judge’s order that the government had acted illegally. Now, eight years since President Donald Trump’s forcible border separations triggered global outrage and came to an official halt, an Associated Press investigation has found that the government has re-separated dozens of children from their families, despite a landmark legal settlement meant to keep them together. Some of their parents have been locked in immigration detention facilities for months, and others deported back to their home countries after being taken from their families once again. In some cases, immigration officials conducting interior sweeps deported people despite discovering they were legally off limits for removal, according to emails obtained by AP. Here are highlights from the AP’s reporting: Separations under Trump’s second termTrump’s second administration has vowed to deport more than 1 million people per year. Federal agents have been plucking people from their communities so swiftly that, according to the Brookings Institution, now the parents of tens of thousands of children have been detained. Family separations often look different from Trump’s first term. In 2018, Ederson and other children at the border were forcibly taken from their parents, who were jailed separately and charged criminally with illegal entry. Then, the government was unable to reunite them for months because adults and children’s information was kept in different computer systems. A judge barred the government from separating families at the border at the border and ordered the government to bring the families back together after the ACLU filed a class action lawsuit. Later, a court settlement banned most family separations to deter immigration until December 2031.Today, if parents are arrested or deported under the president’s push for mass deportations, they are being made to choose whether to leave their children behind in the United States. What does the government say?“DHS complies with all court orders, even as radical NGOs shop for the most favorable forum and activist judges seek to thwart our operations,” acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson, said in response to AP requests for comment about the government’s policies toward separated families.Government attorneys have argued in recent court filings that there are no legal restrictions on “the government’s statutory authority to execute orders of removal.” Bis said enforcing immigration law was “not optional,” and that “every removal of an illegal alien helps restore order and reinforce the rule of law.” Read More Ederson’s family recently was allowed to return, but their status is still on shaky ground. In late 2017, immigration officials began forcibly separating parents and children at the U.S.-Mexico border, under a policy championed by Stephen Miller, Trump’s then-senior policy advisor and now White House deputy chief of staff. ACLU filed a class action lawsuit in February 2018 to halt the practice called Ms. L v. U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement, on behalf of a Congolese mother the Trump administration separated from her 7-year-old daughter. It wasn’t until thousands of families were torn apart that a judge ordered the government to end separations, saying it caused “lasting, excruciating harm.” According to ACLU’s most recent accounting, the number of separated parents and children, and their impacted family members covered by the settlement is far greater than previously reported— over 11,800 — and because the government deported so many people before the practice was banned, the full scope may never be known. The ACLU also provided AP with new data surrounding Ms. L class members who have been detained and deported during the second Trump administration. Under a 2023 settlement agreement, Ms. L class members — including separated parents, children and other close relatives — got special legal protections, pathways toward asylum and access to attorneys, work permits and support services. And for eight years, advocates and attorneys tried to help the families reunite and recover, and offered them everything from job placement to psychological counseling, benefits meant “to prevent any ongoing harm caused by the initial separation,” according to the settlement. Have a news tip?Contact AP’s global investigative team at [email protected]. For secure and confidential communications, use the free Signal app +1 (202) 281-8604. As deportations have risen in the last year and a half, attorneys say many separated families have become more fearful about filling out government paperwork and don’t know they can apply for asylum, a key settlement benefit that expires in December. The administration also hasn’t said if it will extend a current, trimmed-back legal services contract for families that ends in August. Another deadline is looming as well: thousands of separated families need to request for any pending removal orders to be cancelled by December, or lose their ability to stay in the U.S. legally. Each morning since Alva López was deported back to Guatemala last June, she has checked her phone for word of when her family could return. Money started drying up. The children began forgetting their English slang. Briseidy, now 14, worried she would drift away from her American friends. Finally, two weeks ago, there was news: the government would bring her family back to Florida on an American Airlines flight, under a judge’s order. At the end of May, passports and travel documents in hand, the family flew to Miami. Ederson said it felt like a miracle. But soon after landing, immigration officials began questioning Alva López, taking her photo and fingerprints once again and picking apart her documents. Their stay in the U.S. may be short. An immigration official granted her just two weeks’ humanitarian parole. The government declined to comment specifically on Alva López’s case.“I still haven’t told the children” about the two weeks’ parole, Alva López said on her first day back in her old West Palm Beach neighborhood. “They’re going to worry that the same thing will happen again.”—-Burke reported from San Francisco. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMAnalyst predicts LeBron James will leave Lakers to join Stephen CurryMany people seem to expect LeBron James to play for the Los Angeles Lakers or the Cleveland Cavaliers next season. But according to multiple reports, the Golden State Warriors loom as a dark horse candidate to land the four-time MVP.James is good friends with both Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, and the Warriors, after a fairly disastrous 2025-26 season, seem almost desperate to make a big move that would pry their championship window open for at least one more year. With the Lakers lacking the depth to be true title contenders, the Warriors could present James with a real shot at his fifth championship ring — if he were to take a massive pay cut to join them.NBA analyst Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report predicted where a number of prominent free agents will land this summer. He predicted that James will head up Highway 101 and team up with Curry and Green on the Warriors."The Los Angeles Lakers face a significant decision with James," Pincus wrote. "Even as he nears 42, he continues to be one of the most powerful players in the association."Still, building properly long-term around [Luka] Dončić is the priority. The Lakers have high hopes to take a step forward this summer, and that's without James. If their plans fail, that could lead to one more season with the future Hall of Famer."... A sign-and-trade from the Lakers would require a three-year deal and trigger apron restrictions. The chance to finish his career in Golden State with Curry will be James' path forward."Pincus' exact prediction is that James will accept the non-taxpayer mid-level exception and sign for $30.8 million over two years, with the second year of the deal being a player option. If this were to happen, expect James' critics to yet again accuse him of wanting to massively stack the deck in his favor, just as they feel he did when he joined Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh on the Miami Heat in 2010 and teamed up with an ascendent Kyrie Irving and a young Kevin Love in Cleveland in 2014.This article originally appeared on LeBron Wire: Analyst predicts LeBron James will leave Lakers to join Stephen Curry0 Comments 0 Shares 41 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COM2026 K League 2 Round 15 Preview2026 K League 2 Round 15 PreviewThe final round before the World Cup break brings several intriguing storylines across the K League 2. In-form Hwaseong FC put their eight-match unbeaten run on the line against promotion contenders Suwon Samsung Bluewings, league leaders Busan IPark look to maintain momentum despite key absences, and Cheonan striker Lee Jun-ho has emerged as one of the competition’s most influential supporting forwards after inspiring his side back to winning ways.Match of the RoundIn-form Hwaseong vs. Suwon Bluewings seeking a responseHwaseong FC versus Suwon Bluewings has been selected as the standout fixture ahead of the final round before the World Cup break.Hwaseong are currently enjoying a remarkable run of form, going unbeaten in eight consecutive matches (six wins, two draws), including three straight victories. One of the biggest changes compared to earlier in the season has been the significant reduction in late goals conceded. Built around a solid back three defensive structure, Hwaseong have also looked dangerous going forward through the movement of Leonard Plana, Kim Byung-oh, and Jegal Jae-min. Full-backs Park Kyung-min and Kim Dae-hwan have also become key attacking outlets with their aggressive forward runs. In addition, substitutes such as Sava Petrov and Demethryus have made important attacking contributions off the bench, helping fuel the team’s momentum.Suwon, meanwhile, face an unexpected challenge ahead of the match. No fewer than seven players are unavailable due to national youth team call-ups. Kim Jun-hong, Kang Seong-jin (U23 national team), and Lee Geon-hee (U21 national team), all of whom featured against Chungnam Asan in the previous round, will miss this game. On top of that, opposing teams have recently begun finding effective ways to counter head coach Lee Jung-hyo’s tactics, making game management more difficult. As a result, Suwon will be relying heavily on the attacking duo of Stanislav Iljutcenko and Paulinho. The two sides met three times last year, with Suwon holding the edge with two wins and one draw. However, given Hwaseong’s recent form, Suwon are unlikely to have an easy night.Team of the RoundBusan secure top spot before World Cup breakBusan IPark have first place wrapped up heading into the break, even before a ball is kicked this weekend. A commanding 4-1 victory over Paju Frontier in Round 14 moved Busan onto 31 points, opening up a five-point lead over second-place Seoul E-Land.Despite leading the table, Busan have not been without setbacks this season. They suffered a 3-2 defeat to Suwon Bluewings in Round 9 and later fell 3-2 to an in-form Hwaseong side in Round 12. However, Busan’s greatest strength has been their ability to avoid consecutive defeats. Each time they have lost this season, they have responded immediately with a victory in the following match. Wins over Gimhae FC 2008 after the Suwon defeat and Paju after the Hwaseong loss are prime examples.Their recent 4-1 victory over Paju in Round 14 was particularly impressive. With striker Cristian Renato attracting heavy defensive attention in recent matches, Busan’s supporting attackers have begun stepping up. Gabriel Honorio took advantage of the extra attention focused on Cristian to score twice, while Kim Hyun-min has continued to play with confidence following his debut goal in Round 11. Substitutes Kim Se-hoon and Baek Ga-on have also provided energy and quality in limited minutes. The main variable for Busan is once again national team call-ups. Park Hye-seong, Kim Hyun-min, and Baek Ga-on have all been selected for the U21 national team. All three have contributed consistently both as starters and substitutes. Meanwhile, this round’s opponents Chungnam Asan claimed their first victory under head coach Andre Gaspar after defeating Suwon 2-1 in the previous round. Attackers Charles Lokolingoy, Park Si-hoo, and Denisson Silva have all been showing improved form, making Chungnam Asan a dangerous opponent. The two teams faced each other three times last year, with Busan winning two and losing one.Player of the RoundLee Jun-ho, the perfect supporting forwardCheonan City ended a three-match winless streak (one draw, two defeats) with a 3-1 away victory over Ansan Greeners in Round 14. Park Jin-sub's men had started the season strongly, going unbeaten in their opening seven matches (three wins, four draws), but later lost momentum. In particular, they struggled to convert early chances. The match against Ansan helped solve those issues, with Lee Jun-ho playing a central role. Introduced in the 23rd minute to replace Woo Jung-yeon, Lee used his physical presence to trouble Ansan’s defence throughout the game. His aggressive hold-up play and constant battling up front drew defender attention and gradually allowed Cheonan to take control offensively.Lee’s influence was especially evident in two key goals. In the 59th minute, he headed the ball down inside the penalty area for Jin Eui-jun, who finished with a left-footed strike. Just before full time, Lee received the ball with his back to goal and produced an excellent pass for Lee Ji-hoon, who calmly converted a one-on-one chance to seal the victory. Although Lee did not score himself, he played a decisive role in every goal.Cheonan, now looking for a second consecutive win with Lee leading the line, will host Suwon FC this round. Suwon FC were held to a 0-0 draw against Seongnam in their previous match.Friday 5th JuneDaegu FC vs. Paju Frontier - 19:30Busan IPark vs. Chungnam Asan - 19:30Seongnam FC vs. Gimhae FC 2008 - 19:30Saturday 6th JuneGyeongnam FC vs. Yongin FC - 19:30Hwaseong FC vs. Suwon Bluewings - 19:30Sunday 7th June0 Comments 0 Shares 41 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMVincent Joseph: Manchester United in race to sign Liverpool jewelVincent Joseph: Manchester United in race to sign Liverpool jewelIt has been more than six decades since Manchester United and Liverpool transferred a player directly between the clubs. However, the northwest rivals attempt to raid each other’s academies occasionally. In 2021, the Red Devils convinced winger Ethan Ennis to reject the Merseyside giants’ contract offer and move to Carrington.Ennis remains on United’s books after loan spells at Doncaster Rovers and Fleetwood Town. Now, the Mancunians are trying to snatch another talent from their rivals’ hands.Manchester United set their sights on Vincent JosephAccording to The Secret Scout, a reputable source for youth football and transfer news, Liverpool’s 16-year-old striker Vincent Joseph “looks set to leave” the club, having been left out of their announcement of scholars. The Secret Scout posted on X that United “hold strong interest” in the young striker, who has raised eyebrows with his physicality and link-up ability.Furthermore, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund have reportedly also sent scouts on multiple occasions to watch Joseph. The England U16 international made two appearances in the U18 Premier League last term, scoring an impressive three goals.“Interesting to see where he ends up. Not many top number 9s around. He will be in demand,” TSS added.Manchester United admire Chelsea prodigyUnited and Bayern are also thought to be among the admirers of Chelsea’s defensive gem Josh Acheampong.Recently, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming the 20-year-old towering defender has landed on United’s radar. However, it is believed Chelsea have turned down approaches from several unnamed clubs as they consider Acheampong untouchable.Much has been made about INEOS’s desire to make marquee additions following United’s qualification for the Champions League, but their interest in the likes of Joseph and Acheampong suggests the club’s hierarchy are equally keen on bringing in young stars with high potential.Featured image Michael Regan via Getty ImagesThe Peoples Person has been one of the world’s leading Man United news sites for over a decade. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMIrvine to host US Men's Soccer team ahead of FIFA World Cup 2026Soccer fever has taken over Southern California as the city of Irvine prepares to welcome the U.S. Men's National Team in their first public training session Monday, June 8, ahead of the FIFA World Cup.The team is using Irvine's Great Park as their team base camp."After some evaluations of the facility, FIFA selected us, which then put us in a catalog of options for nations to choose from and then for a couple years we did tours with a lot of different countries, interested parties, and earlier this year, January, we were selected by the United States Men's team," said Community Services Manager Great Park Athletics, Steven Stewart. The community training session will give fans a rare opportunity to watch the team up close as players get ready for the World Cup, but only if you were able to snag a free ticket through their lottery system."Unfortunately, now the tickets are sold out, they were free, but part of a lottery system. The community is really excited. I think there's going to be a really good opportunity for the people to see the team here in Irvine. It's going to be really a legacy," Stewart said. "Unfortunately, you can't access the site or the park unless you are one of those ticket holders but for the lucky few, they're going to have an opportunity to see the team here and that's the only opportunity."Over 30,000 people entered the lottery, and only 5,000 people were selected."I looked up to see if they were holding open practices at all and it just happened I looked up the day after the entrance for the lottery system, the tickets had closed," long-time U.S. Men's Soccer team fan James Beckner said.A SoCal native, Beckner had the unconventional idea to turn to the internet, posting on forums and putting himself out there in hopes that someone with tickets is willing to let him tag along."Anyone who is willing, you know, kinda put themselves out there and meet me at the stadium, I feel like, are willing to make new friends as well. I feel like I'm a pretty easy going guy... based on my Reddit posts, I've been like really open about, hey, I'm willing to buy you a beer and all this kind of stuff. It's been interesting so far. Like I said, hoping it works out and hoping to get in and see the boys practice," Beckner said.Beckner added that he has some leads, but nothing set in stone yet. As for Irvine, hosting the national team will put the city on soccer's global stage.0 Comments 0 Shares 41 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMHere we go – French defender set to join Real Madrid on a free transfer this summerHere we go – French defender set to join Real Madrid on a free transfer this summerReal Madrid have done a superb job of accelerating their operations in the transfer market this summer, despite the prospect of the upcoming presidential elections. The Spanish giants have been primarily chasing two defenders in Ibrahima Konate and Denzel Dumfries. Both have been signed, according to Fabrizio Romano and it was reported last night that Dumfries was going to arrive in Madrid to complete his medical.Romano has already given his customary ‘here we go’ for the Dumfries deal.Ibrahima Konate – here we goNow, Romano has given his ‘here we go’ for the Konate deal as well, confirming that the French defender will indeed sign for Real Madrid heading into the next season. The former RB Leipzig defender has signed a four-year contract with Los Blancos, same as Dumfries. Both players are expected to join the Madrid camp soon.Romano adds that Konate and Dumfries’ move will be made by official only after the presidential election, where Florentino Perez will be taking on Enrique Riquelme.Perez, though, is the undisputed favourite and has already ratified these two signings. How will Konate and Dumfries fit into Real Madrid?Konate will add depth to Real Madrid’s backline. (Photo by Jack Thomas/Getty Images)Konate and Dumfries are not absolute world class talents who can become the X-factor overnight. But they are gritty players who will add valuable depth to Real Madrid’s defensive unit.Konate can add some much-needed competition for the centre-backs Dean Huijsen, Antonio Rudiger and Eder Militao. Meanwhile, Dumfries is likely to operate as the main left-back for Real Madrid next season, as new coach Jose Mourinho is reportedly not too impressed with Alvaro Carreras. For Real Madrid, it is a net win as the club will be able to announce both deals before the World Cup – something the team wanted desperately.0 Comments 0 Shares 41 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMVictor Wembanyama drops brutal assessment of his Game 1 performance vs. New York KnicksPhoto by Gregory Shamus/Getty ImagesSan Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama did not hide from his poor Game 1 performance after the New York Knicks took control of the NBA Finals opener.Wembanyama’s first Finals game was never going to be treated like an ordinary night. The stage was bigger, the pressure was sharper, and the Spurs needed their franchise player to look settled against a Knicks team that kept disrupting his rhythm. His postgame answer carried weight because it sounded direct rather than defensive. Wembanyama did not dress up the performance or blame the occasion, he owned the night and pointed toward the response that has to follow.Photo by Gregory Shamus/Getty ImagesVictor Wembanyama owns New York Knicks struggle after San Antonio Spurs lossHoop Central on X shared Victor Wembanyama’s blunt reaction after the San Antonio Spurs dropped Game 1 to the New York Knicks, with the young star refusing to soften his own review.“I’m gonna figure it out. I was bad tonight. It’s not more complicated than that,” Wembanyama said.Wembanyama finished with 26 points, 12 rebounds, and 3 blocks, but his 6-for-21 shooting and six turnovers made the night feel much rougher than those headline numbers suggest. The Knicks forced him into uncomfortable possessions, and his late-game rhythm never fully arrived. A missed deep three and a costly turnover in the final minute became part of a closing stretch San Antonio could not survive.Victor Wembanyama leaves San Antonio Spurs chasing New York Knicks responseNew York won Game 1 105-95, taking a 1-0 lead in the NBA Finals after closing the game with more control. Jalen Brunson led the Knicks with 30 points, while Karl-Anthony Towns helped stretch the floor and pull Wembanyama into difficult defensive decisions. The Spurs had a 14-point third-quarter lead, so the loss carried more frustration than a simple bad shooting night. San Antonio had enough control to win the opener, but the Knicks finished with better shot-making and cleaner late possessions.Wembanyama’s assessment matters because the Spurs cannot afford a long adjustment period. His size, defense, and scoring gravity are central to everything they do, and Game 2 now becomes the first test of how quickly he can solve what New York showed him.The brutal quote will travel because it sounded harsh. The Commanders signed 26-year-old tight end Chig Okonkwo to a three-year deal worth $30 million in March. By virtue of that contract, Washington has big plans for Okonkwo. While the Commanders also have Ben Sinnott and John Bates at tight end, Okonkwo was signed to replace Zach Ertz as Jayden Daniels' primary receiving option at tight end. Daniels loves throwing to the tight end. He and Ertz had a special connection over the last two years. Okonkwo is a different player than Ertz. He's far more athletic and better after the catch. Ertz ran precise routes, earning the trust of Daniels and his teammates. Okonkwo's dynamic ability after the catch could be key to David Blough's offense in 2026. The Commanders released some select highlights on social media this week from OTAs. One of those highlights was Daniels connecting with Okonkwo.CHIG ‼️ pic.twitter.com/tUMbip0P6L— Washington Commanders (@Commanders) June 4, 2026Sure, it's only practice, and there are no players in pads. Still, this part of the offseason is where quarterbacks can begin to build trust with their new targets. Okonkwo has been steady throughout his four-year NFL career, catching at least 52 passes in each of the last three seasons. He's never played with a quarterback like Daniels or with a top receiver like McLaurin. It will be interesting to watch Daniels and Okonkwo throughout training camp. You knew early with Ertz in 2024 that he'd be a top target for Daniels. Could the same happen with Okonkwo ahead of the 2026 season? It appears they are off to a fast start. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMD-Backs 0, Dodgers 7: Beat down in DowntownPHOENIX, ARIZONA - JUNE 03: Starting pitcher Zac Gallen #23 of the Arizona Diamondbacks reacts as he pitches against the Los Angeles Dodgers during the first inning of the MLB game at Chase Field on June 03, 2026 in Phoenix, Arizona. (Photo by Christian Petersen/Getty Images) | Getty Images At the beginning of this series, Mark Grace remarked that the Diamondbacks needed to take advantage of the starting pitching matchups in the first two games because – on paper at least – they favored the D-Backs. The first game featured a resurgent Eduardo Rodriguez against youngster Emmet Sheehan while the second one pitted the reinvented Michael Soroka against journeyman Eric Lauer. Grace’s recommendation was certainly heeded in the first game when Rodriguez went six innings and allowed just one run, but Soroka wasn’t quite able to take the baton the next night even if he ended stronger than he started. Frustratingly, the script flipped on starting pitching beginning with Shohei Ohtani and his otherworldly 0.82 ERA going tonight while Justin Wrobleski and his excellent 2.87 ERA will round out the series. As expected, the D-Backs ran headlong into the buzzsaw that Ohtani has been on the bump this season while Zac Gallen labored through just five innings and gave up five runs. There were essentially no highlights for the D-Backs tonight, just lowlights. Seriously, if you’re a Diamondbacks’ fan, go read a book or talk to a friend instead. The vibes for the night started off poorly with Ketel Marte being scratched from the lineup late with “full body fatigue” that was later clarified to be more focused on his hamstring as Torey Lovullo explained that he would prefer to give him a day off today than push him through the pain. They did not improve through the night. After a scoreless first, Mookie Betts leadoff the second inning by reaching on a slightly off-target throw from Geraldo Perdomo that was immediately cashed in on a mammoth home run from Kyle Tucker off a flat Gallen fastball that sat middle-middle. The third also started with a pair of leadoff base runners with a walk to Ohtani, a double from Andy Pages, and a two-run single from Freddie Freeman. Max Muncy would add another run on a single that somehow eluded Gallen and Perdomo to reach the outfield and allow Freeman to motor around for a fifth LA run. Brandon Pfaadt came into the game in relief and failed to provide much confidence in his role moving forward. After collecting a couple quick outs, he loaded the bases on a Muncy double, a Will Smith walk, and an Alex Call hit by pitch that was again quickly cashed in by an Alex Freeland single up the middle that once again eluded the infield defenders. Meanwhile, the Ohtani show was in full effect tonight. He extended his no-hit streak another 3.2 IP until Gabriel Moreno broke up his no-hitter with a two-out double in the fourth – one of just two hits and three baserunners the Japanese ace allowed over six innings of work. The D-Backs would muster just two more baserunners for the remainder of the game with a two-out walk to Jose Fernandez and a fielding error on a ball Moreno put into play on the left side of the infield. They did little to generate any baserunners and continued to struggle to find any kind of offensive rhythm after their latest sweep of the Giants. The team is now just 1-5 since leaving San Francisco and looking for answers on both sides of the ball. Thankfully, regardless of how ugly a loss might be, they count the same as a a big blowout. Hopefully the boys are able to shower and relax before going for a series split tomorrow.0 Comments 0 Shares 41 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMKarl-Anthony Towns did in one game what Chet Holmgren failed to do in seven games vs. Victor WembanyamaPhoto by Ronald Cortes/Getty ImagesNew York Knicks center Karl-Anthony Towns gave San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama a tougher Game 1 test than Chet Holmgren managed in the previous round.New York’s 105-95 win was about more than the final score. It also showed a clear difference in mindset, with Towns attacking the matchup while Oklahoma City often struggled to put real pressure on the rim.The early comparison made Towns’ performance feel even more pointed. His willingness to challenge Wembanyama inside became one of the sharpest storylines from the opener.Photo by Christian Petersen/Getty ImagesKarl-Anthony Towns exposes Victor Wembanyama in New York Knicks statementUnderdog NBA highlighted the contrast from Game 1, with Karl-Anthony Towns making six layups against Victor Wembanyama after Chet Holmgren had only five across the entire Western Conference Finals. The number stood out because Wembanyama usually changes how opponents think near the rim. His size, reach, and timing can make even clean looks feel rushed.Towns did not play as if the matchup scared him. He finished with 18 points, 12 rebounds, and 4 assists, giving the Knicks the kind of interior confidence Oklahoma City often lacked. The layup stat showed intent. Towns did not only try to pull Wembanyama away from the paint, he also challenged him close to the basket and won enough of those moments to shift the tone.Karl-Anthony Towns makes Chet Holmgren look worse against Victor WembanyamaHolmgren’s comparison is uncomfortable because it stretches across seven games, not one night. He averaged 10.7 points and 7.1 rebounds against the Spurs in the Western Conference Finals, which was not enough for a Thunder team that needed more inside.Towns producing more layups against Wembanyama in one Finals game than Holmgren managed in an entire series reflects well on his force. It also reflects badly on Holmgren’s inability to consistently pressure the rim.Oklahoma City had other problems in the series, including injuries and shot creation issues, so Holmgren was not the only reason the Thunder fell short. Towns’ immediate success against the same defensive anchor still made the contrast difficult to ignore.Wembanyama will have time to adjust, and one game does not decide the matchup. He returned to the team at the end of the season and scored and assisted in the final game of the season against Brighton and Hove Albion.Dorgu lined up as a left winger, as he has been doing under Michael Carrick recently. The winger had one shot that was blocked and made no key passes in Denmark’s 0-0 draw with the Democratic Republic of the Congo.Dorgu failed with his only cross attempt and completed 75% of his passes. He also failed to win any duels or tackles in a disappointing 45 minutes on the pitch.Former Red Devils Rasmus Hojlund and Christian Eriksen were also in action for the Scandinavian side.James ScanlonThe Manchester United youngster endured a tough loan spell at Swindon Town, where he barely kicked a ball in anger. The 19-year-old was called up to international duty for Gibraltar in their 4-0 victory over the British Virgin Islands. After 32 minutes, he was free in the box and rolled the ball into the net after the ball was squared into the penalty area.Scanlon added another goal later on, and his brace means he has now scored four goals for his national team in just 23 appearances. It also means he has moved up to third in his nation’s all-time goalscoring charts despite his tender age.Only Roy Chipolina, with five goals, and Liam Walker, with eight, have more goals for the tiny nation.Feature image Dan Mullan via Getty Imagesonline pollsThe Peoples Person has been one of the world’s leading Man United news sites for over a decade. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMLiverpool get green light for £80m Portugal midfielder dealLiverpool get green light for £80m Portugal midfielder dealLiverpool have been tipped to shake up their midfield options this summer. The middle sector was identified as a problem position during a poor 2025/26 season - a campaign which ultimately cost Arne Slot his job.The likes of Curtis Jones, Alexis Mac Allister and Wataru Endo could all be moved on as Richard Hughes considers changes.Mateus Fernandes wanted by LiverpoolOne name reportedly on the radar is West Ham United’s Mateus Fernandes. According to a report in TEAMtalk the Reds are among the teams competing for the Portugal international’s signature following relegation from the Premier League.“Mateus Fernandes has been given the green light to leave West Ham this summer following discussions with the relegated Hammers, and while Manchester United are firmly in the race, Liverpool are closely monitoring the situation and pondering a firm move of their own,” the report reads. The report adds that Arsenal as well as Paris Saint-Germain are in the hunt for the 21-year-old midfielder - who is under contract with the Irons until 2030.Although the cash-strapped Hammers would like around £80m for the Sporting CP-trained talent it is likely they would have to settle for less.“Liverpool are also keeping a close eye on the situation, with the Merseyside giants emerging as ones to watch in the coming weeks,” the report reads.“West Ham, for their part, are demanding in excess of £80 million (€92.5m, $108m) for their star.“Initial offers, though, are anticipated to begin around the £60 million mark (€69m, $81m) plus performance-related add-ons.”Mateus Fernandes: Situation summaryMateus Fernandes has quickly become West Ham’s standout midfield asset, a dynamic right‑footed Portugal international who blends off‑ball industry with line‑breaking carries and productive final‑third output.Signed from Southampton in August 2025 for an initial fee of around £38m plus add‑ons, he is tied to a five‑year deal with an option of a further year and no release clause, leaving the Hammers in a strong contractual position. After a season delivering goals and assists from midfield in a relegated side, and recently breaking into the Portugal senior set‑up, he is viewed as a prime saleable asset.West Ham, needing to generate significant funds after dropping into the Championship, are open to a sale and hope for a bidding war, with Manchester United at the front of a queue that also includes Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal and Paris Saint‑Germain.0 Comments 0 Shares 41 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COM'Bringing in Iraola is the best option - Murphy[Getty Images]Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy feels the Reds will be in a much better position next season with Andoni Iraola than they were under Arne Slot."I'm quite excited because after watching Bournemouth play, there's no reason to think he's not going to try to play the same way - in terms of being courageous and on the front foot, and trying to press teams with high energy and play attacking football," Murphy said."When a fanbase becomes disillusioned with a manager and his style of play - and then start turning on him - you're delaying the inevitable. I do believe Liverpool are better placed now."Bringing in Iraola was the best option because the fans go into a new campaign with hope and excitement, rather than fear. You do not want to start the season with the players feeling the anxiety from the outset, and this was the best way for Liverpool to do it."Managers have often struggled to make the step up in the Premier League in the past, the most recent example when Thomas Frank joined Tottenham from Brentford. But will Iraola - who moved to Bournemouth from Spanish side Rayo Vallecano - succeed where others have not?"I do have a couple of reservations because he's never managed a club of this size before and he will be a little bit surprised at how intrusive it will be on his life when you manage Liverpool," added Murphy, who is a Match of the Day pundit and BBC Sport columnist."Even as a player, that changes overnight because it's one of the biggest clubs in the world and everything you do will be scrutinised and talked about, locally and globally."The only other reservation is whether he will be able to play high-intensity football every few days because that will require a certain level of fitness - which we saw with Jurgen Klopp's teams with the flying full-backs, the midfield dynamism and the work-rate of the attackers."It's difficult to see how to create that with what he's got at the moment so the summer transfer window is huge for Liverpool in that respect. The current squad lacks legs and dynamism and isn't filled with brilliant players off the ball."Read more here0 Comments 0 Shares 41 Views 0 Reviews

APNEWS.COMAI companies are barreling toward huge Wall Street debuts. A look at the biggest playersElon Musk departs after a welcome ceremony with President Donald Trump and China's President Xi Jinping at the Great Hall of the People, Thursday, May 14, 2026, in Beijing. (AP Photo/Mark Schiefelbein, File)2026-06-04T04:01:45Z Some of the leading artificial intelligence companies are moving toward initial public offerings this year at eye-popping valuations. From Anthropic to SpaceX to OpenAI, tech giants are looking to take their shares public to access more capital in the race to shape the technology’s future. The amount of money involved in building and maintaining artificial intelligence models, the pursuit of artificial general intelligence that can surpass humans at many tasks, and widespread AI adoption all have led to an air of excitement around the technology that has helped lift the stock market to record highs.“These companies are now burning through cash to win the AI race, and public equity is the cheapest source available, particularly in a rising interest rate environment,” said Michael Field, chief equity analyst at Morningstar. But amid the billions — even trillions — at stake, worries about an AI bubble are looming in the background. Some experts fear tech companies and venture capitalists are pouring too much money into a still-nascent and unproven technology. For now, though, the market shows no signs of a slowdown. Here’s a look at some of the biggest AI-focused companies. SpaceXElon Musk’s SpaceX was valued at $800 billion last year, but its value grew to $1.25 trillion after the space exploration company merged in February with Musk’s artificial intelligence company, xAI. Now, SpaceX plans an IPO that could become one of the biggest stock sales ever — even though the company is currently losing billions of dollars a year. SpaceX lost $2.6 billion from operations last year on $18.7 billion in revenue, according to a May regulatory filing, and the losses kept piling up at the start of this year. xAI, which features the Grok chatbot, lost $6.4 billion in operations last year, according to a company document. Musk got SpaceX to buy xAI earlier this year despite protests from some SpaceX investors that it was a bailout and unethical given that he was a controlling shareholder in both.SpaceX said on Wednesday it plans to raise up to $75 billion when it goes public this month, setting the stage for the largest-ever stock market debut and putting Musk on course to becoming the world’s first trillionaire. An offering of that size would easily break the record for the largest IPO, which was set by Saudi Aramco in 2019 when the oil giant went public and raised $26 billion. AnthropicAnthropic, the maker of the Claude chatbot, was formed in 2021 by ex-OpenAI leaders. It was recently valued at $965 billion, making it one of the world’s most valuable startups. It has been a meteoric rise for what was once a little-known research laboratory. The San Francisco-based company is moving toward going public on Wall Street, announcing June 1 that it has submitted a confidential filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission for a proposed IPO.Anthropic has said it is making annualized revenue of $47 billion from selling its technology to people and organizations using Claude to write code and do other work and personal tasks on their behalf. Read More OpenAI The maker of ChatGPT began in 2015 as a nonprofit dedicated to developing AI for the common good. It is now a company valued at $852 billion planning an IPO as soon as this fall. While OpenAI may have helped set off the current AI boom, Anthropic’s meteoric rise and Claude’s growing popularity have left the ChatGPT maker playing catch-up. In an unsuccessful lawsuit against OpenAI and its top executives, Elon Musk, an OpenAI co-founder, claimed the company diverted from its founding mission to make more money. OpenAI had countered that Musk was simply seeking a bigger slice of the company. OpenAI has not yet reported filing initial IPO paperwork with the SEC. Several AI heavyweights are already public companies Google designed the Gemini AI assistant in response to a competitive threat posed by OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which came out in late 2022. Gemini AI models are integrated into Google search and other products such as Maps. The market value of Alphabet, Google’s Mountain View, California-based parent company, was $4.54 trillion at the beginning of June, up from $2.3 trillion a year earlier. That growth is a sign that Alphabet’s spending spree on AI is producing dividends so far, despite investor worries about some of its peers’ massive AI investments. Meta’s AI push has meant integrating its assistant, Llama, into all aspects of its business, including advertising and consumer-facing tools such as a digital assistant that can help with daily tasks, as well as image and video creation. Unlike many rival models, Llama is open source, meaning it is largely available to the public and to developers. Meta AI is available as a standalone app and it is integrated into the Menlo Park, California-based company’s smart glasses. Meta’s market value as of early June was $1.55 trillion, down from $1.76 trillion a year earlier amid investor concerns about the company’s massive AI spending. Microsoft, which went public 40 years ago, likely would have been running behind in the AI race were it not for a timely multibillion-dollar investment in OpenAI. Microsoft provided the computing power and financial backing that helped OpenAI build ChatGPT. In turn, Microsoft was able to use the same technical foundation to power its own AI assistant, now called Copilot. The once-exclusive partnership has since evolved as both companies look to other partners to advance their AI ambitions. APNEWS.COMUkraine’s drone strikes set a gloomy tone for Putin’s economic showcaseA plume of black smoke is seen over the port of St. Petersburg, Russia, Wednesday, June 3, 2026, after a Ukrainian drone attack. (AP Photo)2026-06-04T04:02:06Z ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (AP) — A massive black cloud rising above the St. Petersburg skyline from a Ukrainian drone strike set a gloomy tone for the opening of President Vladimir Putin’s annual showcase of Russia’s economic achievements. With Putin set to arrive Thursday in his hometown that is hosting the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, the Ukrainian attack a day earlier that set an oil terminal ablaze was another embarrassing blow to his efforts to minimize the impact of the 4-year-old conflict and cast it as a distant event with no effect on Russian daily life. The attack, which also targeted a naval base near Russia’s second-largest city on the Gulf of Finland, underlined Ukraine’s growing capability to hit deep inside its neighbor and demonstrated that even the heavily protected city where Putin was born is increasingly vulnerable. Scores of flights were delayed or diverted at St. Petersburg’s airport and authorities cut cellphone internet service to try to prevent drone attacks.Putin had scaled down Russia’s annual Victory Day parade on May 9, fearing Ukrainian drone strikes. Days later, a massive drone attack on Moscow’s suburbs killed three and showed the capital’s vulnerability. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia’s forces were pressing inside Ukraine “in order to prevent such attacks” like the one on St. Petersburg. He noted that “systematic” strikes on Kyiv that Russia threatened last week are underway. Read More On Tuesday, Russia hit Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities with hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles, killing 23 and wounding 151 others.Putin has used the forum to showcase his country’s economic advances and encourage foreign investment. Often styled as the Russian version of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, it usually draws tens of thousands of delegates from around the world. While Western officials and business people have stayed away from the forum after Putin sent troops into Ukraine in 2022, Russia has sought to attract more guests from other regions to underline its declared goal of promoting a “multipolar world.”Saudi Arabia, which is a special guest this year, has sent a large delegation. The presidents of Uzbekistan and Tanzania and China’s vice president also are attending. A U.S. official, Rodney Mims Cook Jr., head of the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts, will attend the event for the first time in years.Russia’s economic outlook has clouded as the initial boost from massive military spending has fizzled. The government has raised taxes and increased domestic borrowing to keep its budget deficit under control.Putin is expected to minimize Russia’s economic problems during his forum appearance, but the Ukrainian attack on St. Petersburg’s port about 15 kilometers (about 9 miles) from the forum’s venue have underlined the growing challenges posed by the conflict.Hours before the forum opened Wednesday, Ukrainian drones also hit the Kronstadt naval base on an island in the Gulf of Finland, the home of Russia’s Baltic Fleet since Peter the Great founded St. Petersburg. While most of the fleet has moved to Russia’s Baltic exclave of Kaliningrad, Kronstadt retains its symbolic importance as the seat of the country’s naval glory, with its historic cathedral and old fortifications. 获取更多RSS:https://feedx.net https://feedx.site0 Comments 0 Shares 42 Views 0 Reviews

APNEWS.COMTrump administration has separated dozens of children from their parents for a second time, AP findsMirsy Maricela Alva Lopez, a Guatemalan migrant who has been separated from her son Ederson twice, cries during an interview at her parents' house in San Martín Cuchumatán, Guatemala, Thursday, April 30, 2026. (AP Photo/Moises Castillo)2026-06-04T04:05:24Z Eleven-year-old Ederson Galicia Alva had just stepped off the plane and into the Miami airport’s dim hallways when federal agents pulled his mother aside for questioning. Again.Panic welled up. His excitement at soon being back at recess with his Florida classmates fell away. Would the government take her away again? This was not his first trauma. In 2018, when he was just 3 years old, Ederson was taken from his mother’s arms at the U.S.-Mexico border under the first Trump administration’s family separation policy and kept apart from her in a government facility for months. They were finally reunited after lawyers intervened. Then, in June of last year, he and his mother were separated a second time, despite legal protections meant to keep them and families like theirs together. He later joined his mother in Guatemala. After a destitute, torturous 11 months in the indigenous highlands, Ederson’s family was allowed to return to Florida last week, following a federal judge’s order that the government had acted illegally. Now, eight years after President Donald Trump’s forcible border separations came to an official halt following global outrage, an Associated Press investigation has found that the government has re-separated dozens of children from their families, despite a landmark legal settlement meant to keep them together. Some of their parents have been locked in immigration detention facilities for months, others deported back to their home countries after being taken from their families once again. In some cases, immigration officials conducting interior arrests deported people despite discovering they were legally off limits for removal, according to emails obtained by AP. “Not only has the government refused to acknowledge the horror of the initial separations during Trump I, but it is now detaining and deporting these same families,” said Lee Gelernt, an attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union and lead counsel in the lawsuit that ended the policy. “These children have suffered enough without re-traumatizing them.” Read More Trump successfully ran for reelection on an anti-immigration platform. Under his second term, the administration has vowed to deport more than 1 million people per year. Federal agents have been plucking people from their communities so swiftly that, according to the Brookings Institution, now the parents of tens of thousands of children have been detained. This time, family separations often look different from Trump’s first term. In 2018, Ederson and other children at the border were taken from their parents, who were detained separately and overwhelmingly charged criminally with illegal entry. Then, the government was unable to reunite them for months because adults and children’s information was kept in different computer systems. A judge barred the government from separating most families at the border and ordered the government to bring the families back together after the ACLU filed a class action lawsuit. Later, a court settlement banned most family separations to deter immigration until December 2031. Today, if parents are arrested or deported under the president’s push for mass deportations, they are being made to choose whether to leave their children behind in the United States. For secure and confidential communications, use the free Signal app +1 (202) 281-8604. “DHS complies with all court orders, even as radical NGOs shop for the most favorable forum and activist judges seek to thwart our operations,” acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson, said in response to AP requests for comment about the government’s policies toward separated families.Government attorneys have argued in recent court filings that there are no legal restrictions on “the government’s statutory authority to execute orders of removal.” Bis added that enforcing immigration law was “not optional,” and that “every removal of an illegal alien helps restore order and reinforce the rule of law.”Ederson’s family recently was allowed to return, but their status is still on shaky ground. Separated at the border, then again in FloridaAfter being taken from his mother, Mirsy Maricela Alva López, and confined to a government shelter in Arizona as a toddler for four and a half months, Ederson barely recognized her once they were reunited, she said. Vivid nightmares haunted him throughout his time in elementary school, where he learned to read in English in classrooms amid lush lawns and palm trees less than 10 miles from Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s Winter White House.Once a federal judge approved a settlement to the class action suit under the Biden administration, Ederson’s family and those like his got legal status to stay in the U.S., with pathways for residency and asylum, and his mother got a work permit. And after months of mental health services to address his ongoing fear that his mother would never return, in early June last year — about five months after the beginning of Trump’s second administration and the president’s resumed anti-immigration push — his therapist finally said he had made so much progress he could put his weekly sessions on pause. Two weeks later, Alva López was stopped by federal agents as she and co-workers were en route to a landscaping job near Mar-a-Lago. The agents, wearing brown uniforms, never gave a reason for the stop or identified themselves before transferring Alva López to two Florida jails, then to ICE custody in Louisiana, and finally to a plane full of shackled deportees heading to Guatemala City, she said.“I felt the very same thing I went through the first time,” Alva López said, weeping. “I was living it all over again.” Alva López was separated from Ederson and his older sister, Briseidy, for a week, and not given the chance to speak with an immigration official about her status or legal protections, said Kelly Kribs, an attorney with the Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights, which has supported Alva López’s family’s return to the U.S. When she finally managed to call Ederson and Briseidy, they couldn’t stop sobbing. Alva López said she asked her sister to buy airplane tickets to send them to Guatemala City. She met them the next day at the airport and traveled with them nine more hours down highways and rutted roads to reach San Martín Cuchumatán, a hamlet in the highlands where the children were born. The three of them shared a tiny bedroom with a dusty floor with Alva López’s parents and brother in an adobe brick home with a sheet metal roof, nothing like the leafy cul-de-sacs of South Florida. The school, where all lessons are in Spanish, was a mile’s walk, and none of the children in town spoke English, Ederson said. Instead of clocking in to trim the gardens of West Palm Beach estates, each day Alva López fed the chickens and ducks in a small coop behind the house, washed the family’s laundry by hand and cooked meals on an open fire. And Ederson was back to waking up at night fearing his future. At Northmore Elementary School, he had been doing well in fifth grade. In Guatemala, he repeated fourth grade, this time in Spanish, and was quizzed on the history and culture of a country he barely knew. His friendships weren’t as close as in West Palm Beach. Sometimes when he felt sad, he watched the school’s old online videos to see his old friends.“We used to play and chat. Sometimes they would help me when I didn’t understand the lesson, and I would help them with math,” he said, fighting back tears. “I have very few friends here.” Ederson still doesn’t want to talk about the separations, and he can’t stop asking his mother why she went to work that day. But he is clear on one thing: he never wants to be apart from his mother again. ‘Lasting, excruciating harm’In late 2017, immigration officials began forcibly separating parents and children at the U.S.-Mexico border, under a policy championed by Stephen Miller, Trump’s then-senior policy advisor who is now White House deputy chief of staff. After advocates got word, the ACLU filed a lawsuit in February 2018 to halt the practice called Ms. L v. U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement, on behalf of a Congolese mother the Trump administration separated from her 7-year-old daughter for four months. It later became a class action suit.It wasn’t until thousands of families were torn apart that a judge ordered the government to end separations, saying it caused “lasting, excruciating harm.” According to the ACLU’s most recent accounting, the number of separated parents and children, and their impacted family members covered by the settlement is far greater than had been previously reported — over 11,800 — and because the government deported so many people before the practice was banned, the full scope may never be known. The ACLU also provided AP with new information surrounding Ms. L class members who have been detained and deported during the second Trump administration, including that dozens of children were re-separated. Legal filings in the Ms. L case and other immigration attorneys working with separated families also detailed the re-separations of children.Under a 2023 settlement agreement signed by the Biden administration, Ms. L class members — including separated parents, children and other close relatives — received special legal protections, pathways toward asylum and access to attorneys, work permits and support services. And over eight years, advocates and attorneys have been trying to help the families reunite and recover, traveling to the Guatemala rainforest and remote Honduran villages to inform class members of their rights, and offering them to apply for everything from humanitarian parole to work authorization permits to psychological counseling, benefits meant “to prevent any ongoing harm caused by the initial separation,” according to the settlement. That changed when Trump began his second term. Support for separated families was never encoded by an act of Congress, and soon it started shrinking.First, funding for legal services temporarily ended. Instead, the Trump administration said it would charge families $1,000 each to enter or stay in the country. Then, attorneys said, some parents were told to appear for more frequent ICE check-ins, and ordered to wear ankle monitors to record their movements. Many class members lost access to counseling. By late last year, emails show the government had deported some protected family members even after being told by the ACLU that they were off limits as protected Ms. L class members. Seven days before Christmas, ACLU attorney Natalie Behr wrote an urgent email to Department of Justice contacts, saying her team had learned that a protected relative was once again in ICE custody. “We ask that you tell us why we were not notified of this class member’s detention within 24 hours. … this class member should not be removed,” Behr wrote.A Washington DOJ trial attorney emailed back, saying he would ask ICE. ACLU attorneys followed up. By the day after Christmas, it was already too late. He had been deported. The problem is still surfacing. While the government is required by judge’s orders to immediately tell the ACLU when Ms. L class members are detained and to return re-separated families who have been deported, the Trump administration only disclosed in April that it had deported another protected person to Guatemala back in September, court filings show. The same thing nearly happened to one of Alva López’s neighbors, who was picked up in West Palm Beach a few months after her deportation. The father also had done landscaping near Mar-a-Lago and had been separated at the U.S.-Mexico border in 2017 from his daughter. Under the first Trump administration, he was swiftly returned to Guatemala. As ACLU attorneys and government lawyers hashed out what separated families were due, he came back to Florida in 2021 to reunite with his children, one of whom had been released after spending months in a government detention facility. In October, the government locked him up, first in Alligator Alcatraz, an immigration detention center in the Florida Everglades, then inside Camp East Montana in Texas, Kribs said. At Camp East Montana, he was fed moldy food with worms, berated by guards and learned that a fellow detainee died after being mistreated by ICE officials, he said, speaking on condition of anonymity for fear of government reprisal. ICE said the detainee died after experiencing “on-site medical distress,” and the El Paso medical examiner’s office later ruled the detainee experienced “asphyxia due to neck and torso compression.” Christmas and New Year’s Eve came and went, and by January he found it hard to keep up his hopes when his children called. The ACLU filed a motion about Ms. L parents being detained, and the father was released from government detention in April. While he’s grateful to be back home in Florida with his children, he told AP he feels like he is still being tracked through his ankle monitor and the ICE check-ins he’s required to do every two weeks. His children still worry he won’t be there when they get out of school, he said.Bis said DHS could impose conditions on parole, including electronic monitoring, regular reporting requirements, and even detention.”‘A place where we can all be safe’Sinri Baltazar, a mother from Honduras who was first separated from her then-5-year-old daughter in 2018, also was allowed under a judge’s order in April to return to Louisiana with her three children, including her youngest, a U.S. citizen. It has not been easy. Baltazar, a member of the Afro-indigenous Garifuna community that faces discrimination in Honduras, was deported with her children last year after she said immigration officials told her to sign a document they said would permit her to keep her family together — only if they all left. Back in New Orleans, she said she was grateful her children could seek a better life, but they have been struggling to get by while living with an acquaintance from church.“The only thing my children say is that they want to be home, in their own house,” Baltazar said. “I’m just trying to get us to a place where we can all be safe, and I hope for that for all the other families.”As deportations have risen in the last year and a half, attorneys say separated families have become increasingly fearful about filling out government paperwork and many don’t know they can apply for asylum, a key benefit of the settlement that expires in December. The administration also hasn’t said whether it will extend a current, trimmed-back legal services contract for families that ends in August. Another deadline is looming as well: thousands of separated families need to request for any pending removal orders to be cancelled by December, or lose their ability to stay in the U.S. legally.“There was never enough funding to keep up with the need,” said Anilú Chadwick, an attorney and senior director at the legal nonprofit Together & Free, which she said has supported 15 families that have been re-separated, including Baltazar’s. “Now we have to see if the government awards a new contract, and I gotta say as someone who has been on the clock to find and locate services, that is not enough time even in the best of circumstances.”For separated families who are waiting for loved ones to be released from detention, or for paperwork to return to the U.S., however, time has been moving at a glacial pace.Ever since Alva López was deported back to Guatemala nearly a year ago, she checked her phone each morning for word of when she and her children could return. Money started drying up. The children began forgetting their English slang. Briseidy, now 14, worried she would drift away from her American friends. Finally, two weeks ago, there was news: the government would bring her and her children back to Florida on an American Airlines flight, under a judge’s order. The puppies she had bought Ederson to lighten his mood had died, and there were few friends and relatives to say goodbye to. So she packed up the siblings and their few possessions, their clothes now loose on their frames after losing weight since returning to Todos Santos Cuchumatán.And finally, in the last week of May, passports and travel documents in hand, the family flew to Miami. Ederson said it felt like a miracle. But soon after landing, immigration officials pulled Alva López in for questioning, taking her photo and fingerprints all over again and re-examining every document she held. Their stay in the U.S. may be short. An immigration official granted her just two weeks’ humanitarian parole. The government declined to comment specifically on Alva López’s case.“I still haven’t told the children” about the two weeks’ parole, Alva López said the first day she woke up back in the family’s old neighborhood in West Palm Beach. “They’re going to worry that the same thing will happen again,” she said.—-Burke reported from San Francisco. APNEWS.COMWomen are the first caregivers in this Ebola outbreak and the most at riskManza Pantience, left, a midwife at Karibuni wa Mama, supervises health workers who collect patients' samples for Ebola testing at Sofepadi Hospital in Bunia, Congo, Friday, May 29, 2026. (AP Photo/Moses Sawasawa)2026-06-04T05:15:00Z BUNIA, Congo (AP) — Every day for the past week, Aline Kasiwa has fed her sick mother, helped her drink and washed her clothes, all while fearing she could catch the Ebola virus as eastern Congo is plagued by one of the fastest-spreading outbreaks of the disease on record.“She is the only family I have left. I cannot abandon her,” Kasiwa told The Associated Press, adding that she is too afraid to take her mother to the hospital where an infection could be confirmed. “These days we hear that many people are dying there, even nurses,” she said. With no protective equipment beyond a cheap face mask, the 28-year-old in Bunia, a city at the heart of the outbreak, symbolizes the women in eastern Congo who are almost always the first caregiver, a role that health workers say is putting them at higher risk of contracting Ebola.“It’s the woman who gives them a bath, it’s the woman who feeds them, and it’s the woman who’s there to wash the dirty clothes and everything else,” said Dr. Furaha Elisabeth, director of the Karibuni Wa Maman gynecology and obstetrics clinic in Bunia. Bundibugyo, the type of Ebola in this outbreak, has no approved treatment or vaccine. Even health workers have said they don’t have the masks, gloves and other gear to protect themselves. That leaves some women with impossible choices, especially pregnant ones.“When you see the way people die — even the nurses who treat us are dying — how can you not be afraid?” said Anny Ekyambo, a 32-year-old in Bunia who said she is too afraid to go to a clinic for checkups, even though she is five months pregnant. Read More Ebola outbreaks have affected women moreThe outbreak was identified weeks late because the rare Bundibugyo type was not tested for at first. Congolese authorities said Wednesday they have confirmed 344 cases, including 60 deaths, and more are suspected. Neighboring Uganda has reported 15 confirmed cases, including one death. It is not clear how many women have been infected. But history shows that previous Ebola outbreaks have affected women more.In the first recorded outbreak in the 1970s, women accounted for 56% of deaths, UN Women said. During the 2018-2020 outbreak in Congo, the deadliest in the country’s history, women and girls made up about two-thirds of reported cases. “We will certainly see the same pattern emerge in the current outbreak,” Sofia Calltorp, UN Women’s chief of humanitarian action, said in a statement. “Ebola transmission follows social realities. The virus spreads along the lines of care-giving, domestic labor, front-line health work and burial practices.”Women in many eastern Congo communities are the ones preparing bodies for burial.‘They had no protection and no equipment’At the Karibuni wa Maman clinic, staff said they had received no personal protective equipment since the outbreak began, despite appeals to health authorities.Patients showing symptoms are examined at the clinic before being referred to larger treatment centers, exposing doctors and nurses to potential infection with minimal safeguards.Julienne Lusenge, president of Women’s Solidarity for Inclusive Peace and Development, the aid group running the clinic, said they have sought protective equipment from various partners, receiving only hand sanitizer and a few masks for nurses. She said the equipment gap also endangers the women caring for sick relatives at home, with most of them unaware that Ebola may be the cause.“During previous outbreaks, many women died because they were the ones nursing sick family members,” Lusenge said.Despite new arrivals of aid and better-organized health facilities in recent days, Doctors Without Borders has said the virus continues to spread faster than the response.“Nobody knows the true scale and severity of this outbreak,” Dr. Alan Gonzalez, the medical charity’s deputy director of operations, has said in a statement. The outbreak is unfolding in unforgiving surroundings. Ituri province has poor road networks and underequipped health facilities more than 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) from Congo’s capital, Kinshasa.Attacks by the Allied Democratic Forces, a rebel group allied with the Islamic State group, and a coalition of ethnic militias also have hindered the response. Other cases have been reported in North Kivu and South Kivu provinces where the Rwanda-backed M23 rebel group controls key cities Goma and Bukavu.Wariness of outsiders after decades of conflict in the remote region is another factor keeping people away from clinics and in women’s care. Pregnant women can be particularly exposedFears of contracting Ebola at a health center have become common.Ekyambo, the pregnant woman in Bunia, said other women in the community share her fear of going to the clinic.“I know that there are steps we must follow with the doctors to monitor the pregnancy and the baby, but we have no choice because this epidemic frightens us,” she said.UN Women has said pregnant women could be more exposed by their frequent contact with health services. Lusenga, however, warned that staying away from clinics could mean missing crucial prenatal and postnatal care consultations.“We risk seeing a rise in prenatal and postnatal mortality, for both mothers and children,” she said.___Banchereau reported from Dakar, Senegal.___For more on Africa and development: https://apnews.com/hub/africa-pulseThe Associated Press receives financial support for global health and development coverage in Africa from the Gates Foundation. APNEWS.COMNorth Korea unveils a new plant to produce fuel for nuclear weaponsIn this photo provided by the North Korean government, its leader Kim Jong Un, front right, visits a new facility to produce nuclear bomb fuels at an undisclosed place in North Korea Wednesday, June 3, 2026. Independent journalists were not given access to cover the event depicted in this image distributed by the North Korean government. The content of this image is as provided and cannot be independently verified. Korean language watermark on image as provided by source reads: "KCNA" which is the abbreviation for Korean Central News Agency. (Korean Central News Agency/Korea News Service via AP)2026-06-03T23:21:44Z SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea on Thursday unveiled a new facility to produce nuclear bomb fuels, with leader Kim Jong Un announcing plans to bolster the country’s nuclear forces “at an exponential rate.”Some experts still question whether North Korea has functioning nuclear missiles that can reach the U.S. mainland. But the nuclear plant’s disclosure implies that Kim is eager to cement his country’s status as a nuclear power and has no intentions of placing his bomb program on a negotiating table. After visiting the site on Wednesday, Kim said he and other top officials “confirmed the order of priority for implementing the ambitious future plan designed to beef up our state’s nuclear forces at an exponential rate,” according to the official Korean Central News Agency. The site is likely a uranium enrichment plantKCNA said the facility used “more sophisticated technology” but didn’t provide further details like its location. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff assessed the site as a uranium enrichment plant and said it was closely coordinating with the United States to monitor North Korean nuclear activities.KCNA photos showed Kim walking through narrow aisles lined with dense rows of silver tubes and pipes, in what appeared to be a centrifuge hall. Another image showed him speaking with senior officials in a meeting room, where a blurred graphic depicting a cone-shaped object was spread across a table. It wasn’t immediately clear whether the graphic showed a warhead design. It’s the third time that North Korea has disclosed a uranium enrichment site. In 2024, North Korea released photos of another covert uranium-enrichment plant. In 2010, North Korea showed one at its main Yongbyon nuclear complex to visiting American scholars.Last September, South Korean Unification Minister Chung Dong-young said that North Korea was operating a total of four uranium enrichment facilities including the Yongbyon complex, and that they were running everyday. Read More Kim wants nuclear weapons stateDuring his plant visit, Kim said the urgency for bolstering up the country’s nuclear war deterrent, both in quality and quantity, has grown because of confrontations with “the most ferocious enemies,” an apparent reference to the U.S. and South Korea. Kim said exercising “the position of a nuclear weapons state” is his country’s “invariable” stand. He said North Korea’s nuclear materials production capacity has more than doubled compared with five years ago, a claim that cannot be verified independently.Experts say Kim wants an international recognition as a nuclear state so that he could demand the lifting of U.N. economic sanctions. They say Kim would ultimately push for arms reductions talks with the U.S. as a way to win concessions in return for a partial surrender of his nuclear capability. President Donald Trump has repeatedly expressed his desire to resume diplomacy with Kim, but the North Korean leader responded the Americans must first drop its demand for North Korea to denuclearize as a precondition for talks. Some question North Korea’s nuclear programSince his first round of nuclear diplomacy collapsed in 2019, Kim has performed a provocative run of weapons tests and vowed repeatedly to “exponentially” expand the country’s nuclear arsenal. This led to many experts believing North Korea now likely has nuclear missiles capable of striking the U.S. mainland. But some still note North Korea hasn’t proved it mastered last-remaining technological hurdles to obtain such missiles, including ensuring its warheads survive the conditions of atmospheric reentry. They say North Korea also need to perfect technologies to place multiple nuclear warheads on a single missile to defeat U.S. missile shields. A senior South Korean official told lawmakers in 2018 that North Korea was estimated to have manufactured between 20 and 60 nuclear weapons, but some experts now put the size of the North’s arsenal at more than 100 warheads. In 2023, North Korea unveiled a type of battlefield nuclear warheads. Some analysts speculated the warhead’s unveiling might be a prelude to a nuclear test. But North Korea hasn’t carried out a test, which would have been its seventh detonation overall and the first since September 2017. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMHow Knicks’ Karl-Anthony Towns Limited Victor Wembanyama In NBA FinalsSAN ANTONIO, TEXAS - JUNE 03: Victor Wembanyama #1 of the San Antonio Spurs shoots the ball against Karl-Anthony Towns #32 of the New York Knicks during the first quarter in Game One of the 2026 NBA Finals at Frost Bank Center on June 03, 2026 in San Antonio, Texas. NOTE TO USER: User expressly acknowledges and agrees that, by downloading and or using this photograph, User is consenting to the terms and conditions of the Getty Images License Agreement. (Photo by Gregory Shamus/Getty Images)Getty ImagesOnce again, the NBA’s rising phenom attempted to exert his dominance and further establish a path to his first championship. This time, San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama discovered he couldn’t do anything he wanted as he often did against the Oklahoma City Thunder’s Chet Holmgren. Instead, New York Knicks center Karl-Anthony Towns put together a roadblock that disrupted Wembanyama. That largely explains why the Knicks prevailed with a 105-95 win over the Spurs on Wednesday in Game 1 of the NBA Finals. Technically, Knicks guard Jalen Brunson provided a larger role with a team-leading 30 points. He scored 13 of those points in the fourth quarter after nursing injury scares throughout the night with his right knee and left ankle. But Towns played a more significant role in the third-seeded Knicks collecting a road win. At least for one night, Towns disrupted Wembanyama’s hopes to do anything he wanted just as he did against Holmgren. Though Wembanyama has experienced plenty of success at Towns’ expense before, Towns took on the challenge and excelled for a key reason.Towns approached the unenviable Wembanyama matchup completely opposite on how Holmgren handled the assignment. Towns didn’t shy away from the challenge. He embraced it. Towns didn’t appear worried that Wembanyama could stuff him at the rim. Instead, Towns attacked the basket with force. Towns didn’t look afraid that Wembanyama would posterize him. Instead, Towns defended him Webanyama with physicality and smarts. The result: Towns finished with 18 points, 12 rebounds and plenty of disrupted shots. Towns forced a Wembanyama turnover as the Knicks held a 99-95 with nearly a minute remaining. Towns also contested Wembanyama’s 3 as the Knicks nursed a 101-95 cushion with 29.5 seconds remaining. Wembanyama finished with 26 points while shooting 6-for-21 from the field and 2-for-9 from deep along with six turnovers largely because of Towns’ presence. Nearly a year ago, Towns caused frustration during the Knicks playoff run for struggling to defend without fouling. He has become a six-time All-Star because of his versatility as a post-up player, perimeter shooter and passer. But he has struggled against elite big men in pivotal moments. When the Knicks hosted the Spurs on Christmas Day last season, Wembanyama feasted with 42 points, 18 rebounds, four assists and four blocks. Not so in Game 1. Towns held Wembanyama to a 2-for-12 clip overall. Entering the fourth quarter, the Spurs shot only 1-for-8 from the field that Towns contested. Towns shot 7-for-15 from the field partly because Wembanyama played in drop coverage instead of defending him outright. By no means did Towns play a perfect game. He shot 0-for-2 from deep. Towns collected four fouls. Wembanyama went 12-for-13 from the free-throw line partly because he attacked Towns at the rim. Those developments didn’t deter Towns. He fueled the Knicks’ 22-9 run to end the third quarter that included a lob finish. Despite his fouls, Towns still played Wembanyama straight up with physicality and positioning as he drove to the basket. After Towns picked up his fourth foul, Wembanyama only split a pair of free throws to reduce New York’s lead to 94-92 with 3:24 remaining. How did Towns pull this off against the Spurs’ 7-foot-3 superstar? Afterwards, Towns told the “Inside the NBA” crew that he treated his first Finals game with a carefree mindset as if he were simply preparing for an AAU game. He also credited his late mother, Jacqueline-Cruz, for inspiring him ever since she died in April 2020 due to COVID-19 complications. By not worrying about the gravity of the moment, Towns played with confidence and purpose. Granted, the Knicks and Towns rightfully won’t make much of this one game alone. Wembanyama will surely try to adjust just as he did after struggling in the Spurs’ Game 5 loss to the Thunder. Then, Wembanyama posted 20 points while shooting only 4-for-15 from the field and 0-for-5 from deep. Afterwards? Different story. In Game 6, Wembanyama finished with 28 points along with better shooting overall (10-for-21) and from 3 (4-for-9). Wembanyama wrote a similar script in Game 7 with 22 points while shooting 7-for-15 from the field and 3-for-5 from the perimeter.Yet, Wembanyama ensured those strong bounce-back games partly because Holmgren couldn’t even put up a fight. Towns may not limit Wembanyama through the rest of the Finals as well as he did in Game 1. The Knicks can depend on Towns, however, at least to defend Wembanyama physically, force him into contested shots and delay his decision-making process. Those plays help any team win pivotal playoff games on the margins. In Game 1, however, Towns excelled with that job description so well that it represents the main reason why the Knicks won. Even on the same night that Brunson scored 30 points. This article was originally published on Forbes.com0 Comments 0 Shares 41 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMRemembering Scotland's World Cup bogeymen of finals gone by[Getty Images]Since their first attempt in 1954 there's always been some kind of misfortune lurking in the shadows for Scotland at World Cups.Their failure to get out of a group has taken many forms; hapless management, bad luck, psychological collapse. Along the way there's been a few bogeymen, characters that few in Scotland had heard until they helped detonate the dream... Back shaving & biggest posers - the Scotland squad in their own wordsGordon to be oldest player at World Cup but Gunn handed No 1Gilmour admits struggle as World Cup dream taken awayCarlos Borges - a hero in every senseThe first of those bogeymen was Carlos Borges. He was a dynamic little winger and a prolific goalscorer, a graduate of the Penarol academy in Montevideo who was playing senior football at 14. On June 19, 1954, in Scotland's second game of their first World Cup, Borges scored a hat-trick for Uruguay in a 7-0 win in Basel. To this day, it's Scotland's biggest ever defeat in international football. To say they were unprepared is putting it mildly. In the heat, the Scots were wearing old-style boots, heavy cotton shirts and shorts that were ill-suited to the conditions. "It was a shambles," recalled Tommy Docherty, who was in the Scotland team that day. Docherty was marking a guy called Juan Schiaffino, a player he knew virtually nothing about. "Nobody told me how good he was." Had Scotland done a modicum of research they might have learned a thing or two. Not only were Uruguay reigning world champions, Schiaffino was one of their superstars, a goalscorer in the decisive match against Brazil in the 1950 finals.Scotland's 7-0 defeat by Uruguay in 1954 remains their biggest ever in international football [Getty Images]Borges was the main man against Scotland, though. A tormenting presence; quick, relentless and two-footed. He scored his hat-trick inside an hour, then scored again in a 4-2 win over the England of Stanley Matthews, Nat Lofthouse and Tom Finney. The winger went on to win a Copa America in 1956 and a Copa Libertadores in 1960, scoring the first ever goal in the competition. For that, and for one other remarkable reason, he's remembered as a hero in his homeland. In July 1963, Borges boarded a steamship called the Ciudad de Asuncion, built in Scotland in 1929. The vessel, with 400 people on board, travelled daily across the Rio de la Plata from Montevideo to Buenos Aires. That night of 10 July was foggy. Visibility limited.Around 3am it crashed into the remains of a sunken Greek freighter and began to list. Shortly after there was an explosion in the engine room. The ship was going down. Passengers began jumping into the river.Borges was on deck as the tragedy developed. A woman recognised him and threw her three-year-old son into his arms, before sliding away to her death. "Save him for me," she shouted. The lifeboats were crowded. With the boy in his arms, Borges scrambled on to a sheet of wood and drifted in the water for 11 hours until rescued by an Argentine ship. The following day he was there when the lad was reunited with his father. The mother was one of 70 fatalities.Borges was haunted by the disaster. He was 31 at the time and stopped playing not long after. Iraj Danaeifard - Iran's man of historyScotland's draw with Iran came in front of a paltry - but irate - crowd [Getty Images]Scotland were still reeling from a hiding by Peru at the 1978 World Cup when they rolled up to Cordoba to play Iran in front of a crowd of just 7,938.Manager Ally MacLeod didn't overdo the homework, and didn't seem to take any notice that the Iranians had won the Asian Cup in 1968, 1972 and 1976. They weren't bad. They'd lost their World Cup opener 3-0 to the Netherlands but put it down to being in awe of the Dutch. There was no danger of them being in awe of the Scots.MacLeod's team led 1-0 through an own goal but, on the hour, Danaeifard took it round Archie Gemmill before beating Alan Rough at his near post. It was their first ever World Cup goal. Rough thought Danaeifard was going across goal. "An all-time low," he said later. It was MacLeod's nadir, a moment his reputation never recovered from. Failing to beat Iran was a monumental embarrassment and left Scotland needing a miracle against the Dutch which, of course, they almost achieved.Danaeifard, a defender, played for Taj in Tehran. He'd won the first of his 17 caps only the year before. He, and others on that Iran team, have spoken about what their world looked like back then. World Cup fixtures and group standingsHow to watch the World Cup on the BBCEverything you need to know about the World CupIran was in political turmoil, riots destabilising the land. Security forces were coming down hard on protestors. The place was on the edge of revolution.Since the national football team was deemed a symbol of the Shah's regime - the Shah backed them to the hilt and used them as propaganda - Danaeifard and his team-mates were allegedly subjected to death threats by radicals. Protestors wanted to know if the players were pro Shah, the western-backed monarch, or pro-Ayatollah Khomeini, the fundamentalist Islamic cleric. Danaeifard felt that the Shah's secret police had infiltrated their travelling party to the World Cup and was afraid to speak openly about anything. After the finals, he returned to Tehran and the Islamic Revolution. The Ayatollah was in charge now and he saw football as a symbol of western imperialism. The game suffered and Danaeifard headed to America where he played for the Tulsa Roughnecks for four years. He was in the States when he heard of the death of a friend, a former team-mate and then-Iran captain, Habib Khabiri. Age 29, and a supporter of a resistance movement, Khabiri was arrested, tortured and executed along with 40 other dissidents.Danaeifard's story and the story of Iranian football in that era puts Scotland's disaster in 1978 into a little bit of perspective.Omar Borras - The madman of Montevideo[Getty Images]When we think back to Scotland playing Uruguay in 1986 and needing a win to progress, the mind's eye captures the brutality of the South Americans and the red card flashed at Jose Batista after 52 seconds. The filth and cynicism of the Uruguayans was impossible to miss in an horrific 0-0 draw - good enough for them to go through but not enough for the Scots, who went home. The architect of it all was manager Omar Borras - the Professor. Uruguay had many talented players - Enzo Francescoli being a gem of a footballer - but Borras believed in grit above grace. He became a reviled figure at home and abroad as Uruguay kicked, stamped and spat their way into the knockouts at Scotland's expense. When Uruguay lost 6-1 to Denmark five days before the Scotland game, such were the death threats that his home had to be put under armed guard. Avoiding defeat against Scotland, therefore, was his priority, by any means necessary. The aftermath of the farce in Neza was ferocious. Ernie Walker, secretary of the Scottish FA, famously called Uruguay cheats and cowards - "the scum of world football". Alex Ferguson, Scotland manager, called them a disgrace.Borras had the extraordinary cheek of criticising referee Joel Quiniou for sending off Batista for taking out Gordon Strachan. "There was a murderer on the field today - the referee," he ranted.Fifa banned him for Uruguay's last-16 game against Argentina, which they lost 1-0. The media savaged him. The fans were mortified by the anti-football.Francescoli said he felt personal shame at the way the team behaved. He spoke of being ordered to chase long balls and fight aerial duels when he was built to create and attack. Borras was sacked as an anti-hero of Uruguay football. Not that it eased Scotland's pain all that much. He just joined the list of people who have stopped them getting what they desperately want.Juan Cayasso - The ghost of GenoaJuan Cayasso beat Jim Leighton to earn Costa Rica a shock win over Scotland [Getty Images]Costa Rica didn't exactly break a gasket when qualifying for their first World Cup in 1990. They beat Panama 3-1 on aggregate and then received a walkover against Mexico after the Mexicans infringed age eligibility rules. Hey presto, Costa Rica were going to Italia '90.We all know how it turned out. Juan Cayasso is an immortal, a player who means so much to people who weren't even born when he scored his country's first ever goal at a World Cup - against Scotland, of course. He's probably the ultimate Scotland bogeyman, one of nine children, a player they called 'el Nene' - the Kid. He was the one who got the only goal at Stadio Luigi Ferraris on 11 June, 1990. Disaster for Scotland. Again."Children stop me in the street to greet me and say, 'you're Cayasso, the one my dad told me scored a goal in 1990'." He did and it was the reason why Scotland tumbled out of the tournament early.Cayasso said that his goal was written in the stars. "We were playing so bad I thought we had not much chance before going to the World Cup." He reckoned without Scotland getting the wobbles once more."I don't know if I remember it because I always see it on video," Cayasso said some years ago. "But I could never be prepared for that moment. "My team-mate Claudio Jara, knocked the ball to me – we call it a taquito here. I was close to him, I step back and when he does the taquito I read it. At first, I'm like, 'oh…' I'm frightened. But then I have to react, it's at my foot. "Jimmy (Leighton) is out. Then it hits his belly and goes over him. I turn around and look at the referee, and he's going to the centre of the field."First I'm frightened, then I don't believe it, then, 'yes, goal'. I had gone far away in that moment. My mind was all about Costa Rica. I wrote a book called 'The Goal from Italia 90: Destiny, Luck or Chance'. It was so crazy."Cayasso's goal helped earn Costa Rica a place in the knockouts - they lost 4-1 to Czechoslovakia - and from the country's president, a gift of a Toyota Corolla. All the team got one. It also won him a move to German football with Stuttgart Kickers. He won promotion to the Bundesliga with them. Cayasso won 49 caps, but one stands above all others. Unforgettable in two different countries but very different reasons.0 Comments 0 Shares 41 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COM'I'd love to see Iraola here for 10 years' - but what's success in 2026-27?[BBC][Getty Images]We asked for your views on what success would look like for Liverpool next season under Andoni Iraola, who has a verbal agreement to succeed Arne Slot as head coach. Here are some of your comments:David: A successful season for me would be Champions League qualification with some better-looking football and players looking like they're giving their all for the club. I'd take that over a bunch of drab, flukey 1-0 wins which may earn an extra point or two.Mike: Success this coming season would mean playing again with flair, heart and passion. Even in the trophy-winning season of 2024-25, Liverpool had become boring. The 2025-26 campaign was one to forget, lacking intensity and belief in the badge. The squad is going through upheaval, but challenging for the league, making Anfield impregnable and winning a trophy is a must. If the new style is front-foot, passionate and played with belief, the support will drive them further on.Elliot: It will be refreshing to see an all-out attack, pressing style of football again. I think success will be a top-three finish, a deep run in the Champions League and maybe a cup final. Will just be happy to see an improvement from a dismal campaign.Ben: Just better football on a consistent basis would represent a step up from the past 18 months, with Champions League qualification hopefully coming as a result of that.Jim: In reality, although I hate to say it, I think a decent run in the cups and Champions League qualification for the following year is probably a successful season. That, and actually getting the team to play football again rather than the rubbish that we saw this season. I still think sorting out the defence is going to be the biggest issue, which could hamper any proposed success.John: Any improvement on fifth in 2026-27 would be success. And if Iraola can achieve that with the style of football we were familiar with under Jurgen Klopp, it will feel like we are getting our identity back. I'm excited to see what he can do for us and for the younger players in the squad. I know he only signed for two years but I think that's a trial run and the real contract will come some time in 2028 when he has a real chance to build a legacy at Liverpool Football Club. I'd love to see him in the job for 10 years. Liverpool do well with that type of continuity.Tony: Attractive, attacking, aggressive, front-foot, pressing football with a top-four finish, a quarter or semi-final appearance in the Champions League, and win a domestic trophy. That would be a great first season. But the bare minimum is top four in the Premier League, playing heavy-metal football and still being in with a chance of the title in May.0 Comments 0 Shares 40 Views 0 Reviews

APNEWS.COMPresidential museum showcases political and personal sides of Obama with sprawling community campusThe Obama Presidential Center is seen Thursday, April 9, 2026, in Chicago. (AP Photo/Erin Hooley)2026-06-04T05:01:41Z CHICAGO (AP) — Former President Barack Obama’s influence in his presidential museum runs deep, from the location on Chicago’s South Side to textured stone adorning its dramatic tower to striped reading chairs that are similar to ones in his own home. The Obama Presidential Center opens to the general public on Juneteenth after a celebratory dedication in Chicago with dignitaries. But tens of thousands of people — friends and family of museum staff, students and journalists — have already been offered a sneak peek at the nearly 20-acre campus as crews finish final art installations and landscaping. The roughly $850 million project covers both the political and personal realms of the nation’s first Black president. Campaign memorabilia and presidential artifacts are displayed in the admission-based museum tower while public spaces of the sprawling campus feature other things important to Obama: a new library, basketball court and picnic area with grills. “This is a safe space for people to come and, yes, reflect on the historic moments of this presidency and the campaigns, but also to come together as a community to think about what change you can bring to your own neighborhood,” Josh Harris, the Obama Foundation’s vice president of public engagement, said during a recent tour with The Associated Press. Here’s a closer look at the top attractions of the campus expected to draw as many as 1 million visitors annually. President for a dayObama’s presidential museum will be the first fully digital museum of its kind, ditching scores of official papers on display. Instead, visitors will experience high-tech and hands-on exhibits spanning the campaigns, key moments of Obama’s presidency and life at the White House. One of the largest attractions is a life-sized replica of the Oval Office. On a recent day, a stream of visitors, including school children, walked through the circular room, stopping to sit behind the desk and pose for pictures. The top drawer holds a copy of a hand-written letter from predecessor former President George W. Bush and Obama’s beloved BlackBerry phone. Read More “We want to make sure that people from all walks of life have the opportunity sit behind the Resolute Desk,” said Harris. “You think about the possibilities that if a young organizer from the South Side of Chicago can be president, you can be president too. Other sections of the museum detail the Affordable Care Act, immigration policies along with smaller moments like when Obama unexpectedly sang during a 2015 eulogy for those killed in a South Carolina church shooting. A large television screen plays a clip of Obama singing “Amazing Grace.”Peppered throughout are areas for personal reflection, which museum organizers say is key. “We’re passing that baton and inviting people to bring change home, however change may be defined, both small or large,” said Louise Bernard, the museum’s director. Touching iconic ballgownsWhen Obama touted the museum’s contents at its groundbreaking in 2021, he predicted one of the top draws.“We want this center to be more than a static museum or a source of archival research,” Obama joked at the site. “It won’t just be a collection of campaign memorabilia or Michelle’s ballgowns, although I know everybody will come see those.”Roughly a dozen outfits on mannequins are behind glass, including a black and red dress designed by Narciso Rodriguez that the former first lady wore on Election Night in 2008 in Chicago.Visitors will also get a chance to touch swatches of the fabrics, including the rose gold chain mail Atelier Versace evening gown she wore at her final state dinner in 2016.Obama’s personal touchesThe museum’s location is near where Barack Obama started his political career, taught law at the University of Chicago and where the family lived. Michelle Obama also grew up on the South Side.A life-long basketball lover, Obama sought a glass-paneled professional grade basketball court which will be used for community programs. The former first lady designed a garden, where lettuce and strawberry plants sprouted on a recent day. There’s also charcoal grills that’ll be available to the public, which Obama has envisioned since he first pitched the plan in community meetings nearly a decade ago. “President Obama always talked about his feelings of being in Chicago and one of his memorable moments was grilling in the park,” Harris said. The Obamas’ design tastes and love of history are also evident. The museum campus features dozens of commissioned works of art while different parts of the campus are named after prominent figures. The central “John Lewis Plaza,” named for the late congressman and civil rights leader, is designed to be a public gathering spot.Inside a new Chicago Public Library branch, a 70-foot mural depicts literary figures including Walt Whitman and James Baldwin. At the center is a boy in an orange shirt being read to by Toni Morrison. He represents a young Obama. Its presidential reading room features thousands of books chosen by the Obamas, ranging from presidential biographies to best-selling fiction. One of Obama’s favorite parts are two high-backed chairs with blue, yellow and black stripes. They were selected by the former president as top-notch reading chairs similar to ones he has at home. Pricey admission with free optionsTickets are $30, the highest of any U.S. presidential museum or library. Next on the list is the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum in California, where tickets are $29.Obama Foundation leaders say the prices are justified for the state-of-the-art facility.Tickets at the adjacent Griffin Museum of Science and Industry are $25.95. In downstate Illinois, tickets to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield run $15.Along with free days and discounts for Illinois residents, Obama Foundation officials also argue the most of the campus is free with only four floors of the museum tower requiring tickets. Anyone can walk the campus, use the playground, library, sledding hill or grilling area. The tower’s top floor, which feature panoramic views of the nation’s third-largest city, is also free.“The idea behind this institution, this campus, was to make it accessible to as many people as possible,” Harris said. 获取更多RSS:https://feedx.net https://feedx.site0 Comments 0 Shares 41 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMYankees have a perfect opportunity to replace Ryan McMahon with 27-home run sluggerYankees have a perfect opportunity to replace Ryan McMahon with 27-home run slugger originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. With the Major League Baseball trade deadline only getting closer, there are going to be some interesting names that could get moved. The New York Yankees are going to be at the top of the list for some elite players, and even guys who can come in and just make a marginal impact. Right now, the Yankees need to improve on the mound, in the infield at third base, and probably behind the plate. There are some players I'd like to see them go after in both scenarios, with third base being an interesting one.It was recently noted by Sports Illustrated that Cardinals infielder Nolan Gorman could be traded. Gorman, who can really swing the bat when he's at the top of his game, has struggled this year with seven home runs and 67 strikeouts compared to 23 walks.“Let's start off with a bold one: Nolan Gorman. The Cardinals have been waiting for Gorman's bat to consistently come around for a few years at this point. While his defense has taken a major step forward, he's still a .210 hitter with just six homers. If he had 15 homers, the .210 batting average would be easier to stomach. “Whether there is some sort of trade or demotion, Gorman's inside track to a consistent role in the middle of the order could very well come to an end this season. Blaze Jordan is down in the minors tearing it up with Triple-A Memphis at 23 years old. At some point, he's going to force the conversation,” Patrick McAvoy wrote. While Gorman's numbers might not be the best, and there are some concerns about whether he's going to be able to figure things out in New York, I still think there's something to be said about him coming in and giving the Yankees a nice boost. In 2023, he hit 27 home runs and popped 19 the year before. If he can get somewhere around that 20-to-25 mark each season, especially with the short left-field porch at Yankee Stadium, he'd be an excellent fit.More MLB news:Steve Cohen has reportedly lost a shocking amount of money since owning the MetsMajor League Baseball CBA could take White House turn if teams can’t agree on dealYankees’ Carlos Lagrange report could hurt their chances of winning American League EastYankees now expected to be stuck with $16 million issue that has no resolutionTarik Skubal’s latest comments on trade rumors should be considered bad news for DodgersYankees get bad news from Tarik Skubal himself after latest comments about potential trade0 Comments 0 Shares 40 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMKnicks lead NBA Finals after late run beats SpursTowns, 30, was first overall pick in the 2015 draft [Getty Images]The New York Knicks overcame a 14-point third-quarter deficit to snatch a 105-95 victory at the San Antonio Spurs in the opening game of the NBA Finals. Jalen Brunson scored 13 of his 30 points in the final quarter as the Knicks scored 11 points without reply to surge clear in the final two minutes. With their 12th win in a row, the Knicks matched the second best all-time post-season streak set by the Spurs in 1999.That was in the Knicks' most recent appearance in the best-of-seven Finals, when the Spurs beat them to the title. It is the fourth time that the Knicks have gone on to win in the second half having trailed by 10 or more points in these play-offs. They overturned a 22-point deficit in the opener of Eastern Conference finals against the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Knicks are bidding to win their first Championship since 1973 and Karl-Anthony Towns said the fans have been inspiring their comebacks."It's something that's in the city, you feel that energy in the city," said Towns, who posted 18 points and 12 rebounds."The grit, the grind, the hard work you've got to put in to make it in the city. "I think we reflect our fans and their lifestyles and what it takes to make it in New York City, when we step on that court with the Knicks jersey."It was a quiet night for Victor Wembanyama. He was the top scorer for the Spurs but only scored six of his 21 shots from the field. "We've been down in a series before - never in the Finals - but I'm not kicking myself about anything," said Wembenyama."I was bad, it's not more complicated than that. I'm not worried in the slightest."The best-of-seven series continues in San Antonio on Friday before the teams head to Madison Square Garden for Game three on Monday.0 Comments 0 Shares 40 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMMajor League Baseball CBA could take White House turn if teams can’t agree on dealMajor League Baseball CBA could take White House turn if teams can’t agree on deal originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The new CBA coming together in Major League Baseball is going to raise many questions, and it could even end up in the hands of people far more powerful than Major League Baseball players. According to the latest report, there's even a sense that the labor talks could end up going to the White House as an X-factor.“While MLB owners will gather Tuesday and Wednesday in New York as labor talks have begun, several owners believe that if this becomes a long, drawn-out work stoppage that threatens games in 2027, the X-factor could be sitting in the White House,” Bob Nightengale of USA Today wrote. As we currently see in college sports, some things going through the White House could play a benefit or a negative to what will happen. At the end of the day, one side is going to get hurt more than the other. The players are arguing that there shouldn't be salary caps, while the ownership groups, at least for most teams, are saying that baseball needs to have something in place to ensure that small markets have an opportunity to win.I hate that we could see Major League Baseball end up in the White House over this, since a salary cap isn't going to change much. The New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers, and teams like that are still going to be some of the best in the world year in and year out because that's where guys want to play. It also just gives owners a reason to continue to be cheap, when they certainly have enough money to at least build competent teams year in and year out.More MLB news:Yankees’ Carlos Lagrange report could hurt their chances of winning American League EastYankees now expected to be stuck with $16 million issue that has no resolutionTarik Skubal’s latest comments on trade rumors should be considered bad news for DodgersYankees get bad news from Tarik Skubal himself after latest comments about potential tradeTigers’ Tarik Skubal breaks silence on trade rumors, and his response was shockingGiants have insane $554 million decision to make during MLB trade deadline0 Comments 0 Shares 40 Views 0 Reviews

APNEWS.COMWith Trump in a holding pattern on Iran war, allies and critics worry he risks getting boxed inPresident Donald Trump speaks in the Oval Office of the White House, Wednesday, June 3, 2026, in Washington. (AP Photo/Alex Brandon)2026-06-04T04:01:35Z WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump is facing warnings from foes and allies alike that he’s getting boxed in on the Iran war, a conflict he sold as a brief military incursion but that has since settled into a holding pattern. It’s been nearly a week since U.S. and Iranian negotiators reached a tentative agreement to extend the ceasefire in the conflict by 60 days and start a new round of talks on Iran’s nuclear program that required Trump’s sign off. But Trump has called for unspecified changes to the agreement and Iranian officials — perhaps calculating that the Republican president is reluctant to restart the bombardment after burning through key weapons systems — are showing no signs they’ll give in to new demands.A series of strikes by the U.S. and Iran this week has raised fresh concern that the ceasefire could collapse. Trump on Wednesday downplayed the significance. “It’s a different part of the world,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. “You know, I’d say in that part of the world, a ceasefire is when you’re shooting in a more moderate manner.”The shaky moment follows repeated claims by Trump since a 14-day ceasefire was agreed to on April 7 — following 38 days of U.S. and Israel bombing of Iran — that a deal is just days away and the Iranian side is begging to come to a settlement. Trump on Wednesday said it was possible something could come together “over the weekend.” Without an interim settlement in place to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, global energy prices remain elevated and are adding to anxieties around the world about the impact of rising costs spurred by the three-month conflict on the cost of food, fuel and other goods. After a string of reports this week that Iran was shutting down talks, Trump told CNBC he “couldn’t care less” if the negotiations had bogged down and even mused they had become “boring.” Read More There’s anxiety Trump is getting boxed inThere’s growing concern inside the administration and among key advisers and allies that Trump now finds himself in a bind, according to a U.S. official and another person familiar with the administration’s internal deliberations, both of whom spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity to discuss private conversations. He’s buffeted by Democrats seizing on oil prices and warnings from hawkish members of his base that an early exit from the conflict would amount to capitulation.Trump is privately hearing from other Republican lawmakers as well as Pentagon officials and Gulf allies that a return to the bombing campaign is a bad idea. Those advising against returning to military action note that the U.S. has burned through munitions at too fast of a rate. It could take three years to replenish some key weapons systems. Meanwhile, Gulf allies are worried that Iran will retaliate against them and their critical infrastructure and energy interests and further set back their economies. At the same time, Trump has bristled at the idea of accepting a deal that resembles the 2015 nuclear agreement brokered by Democrat Barack Obama’s administration, which restricted Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for lifting international economic sanctions. Trump during his first term abandoned the pact that he said had failed to permanently stop Iran’s nuclear program, ignored Iran’s ballistic missile development, and did not penalize Iran for supporting militant proxy groups across the Middle East. Now, Trump, according to those familiar with internal deliberations, has made clear he feels strongly he can’t make “a bad deal” and is acutely aware that he’s at a moment where he’s at risk of tarnishing his legacy if he missteps.White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly dismissed the notion that Trump has been boxed in or that there’s any concern within the administration about the pace of talks.“These mysterious so-called ‘administration officials’ have no idea what they’re talking about — those actually involved in sensitive discussions know to trust in President Trump, who will always do what is best for U.S. national security,” Kelly said in a statement. Trump resisted Israel push for Lebanon bombingsIsraeli and hawkish allies in Washington have made the case to Trump that a deal at this point would amount to unconditional surrender, urging him to ratchet up economic pressure on Iran and back Israel’s assault on the Hezbollah militant group in Lebanon. But Trump earlier this week in a heated call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu demanded Israel stand down, and on Wednesday, Israel and Lebanon said they agreed to renew a ceasefire. Hezbollah was not part of the Israel-Lebanon talks, which have been held at the ambassadorial level in Washington since the beginning of last month. Remaining in the current status quo with Tehran — neither a full resumption of hostilities nor sealing an interim agreement to restart nuclear talks — is a situation that Iran appears better poised to exploit, argues Behnam Ben Taleblu, a senior fellow at the hawkish Washington think tank Foundation for Defense of Democracies. Despite being the weaker party, Iran appears to be calculating that the longer the holding pattern lasts, the better the chances are they can “box in” Trump, he added.“Either way, Tehran appears more resolute than ever to not provide Trump with a victory image, hence why it isn’t budging on the battlefield or negotiating table,” Taleblu said.Holding pattern isn’t helpful for Republicans on the ballotAt the same time, Democrats are trying to capitalize on Trump’s handling of the unpopular war ahead of November’s midterm elections. The House of Representatives on Wednesday for the first time passed a symbolic resolution calling for a halt in military action against Iran, with four Republican lawmakers joining Democrats in the rebuke of Trump’s war.During hours of hearings on Capitol Hill on Tuesday and Wednesday with Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Democrats laced into Trump for discounting the economic impact of the conflict on Americans and for failing to anticipate that Iran would shutter the Strait. In one tense exchange, New Jersey Democratic Sen. Cory Booker pointed to the unsteady ceasefire as a sign that Iran has the upper hand.“We are the strongest nation on the planet Earth, and we’re in a stalemate with Iran,” Booker said. “And now we’re begging to get back into a deal that you all trashed in the first place.”Rubio dismissed the criticism, underscoring that Iran has been placed on its heels with the strikes that have taken out multiple layers of senior leadership and left Iran’s economy in shambles.“There’s no one begging,” Rubio responded. “I don’t know where you’re getting this perception that Iran is stronger.”Another Democrat, Sen. Chris Van Hollen of Maryland, homed in on Trump’s comments last month that voter anxiety about the cost of living was “not even a little bit” of a motivating factor for him to reach a deal to end the war.The president continues to downplay the rising costs for Americans at the pump and predict that gas prices would fall sharply after the conflict ends.Christopher Borick, the director of the Muhlenberg College Institute of Public Opinion in Pennsylvania, said that Democrats running in swing districts around the country are already zeroing in on Trump’s rhetoric on the war’s impact on Americans’ pocketbooks.“There’s significant risk in having this thing drag on for Republicans,” Borick said. “It’s certainly going to hurt if Trump ends up in a place where the war ends and Iran’s nuclear program is in the same place. But for Republicans in some of these tough swing districts, there’s a case to be made to rip the bandage off now, get some easing in the oil markets and hope there’s enough time for voters to turn the page.”___ Associated Press writers Farnoush Amiri in New York and Lisa Mascaro contributed to this report. APNEWS.COMPolice warn families of Tiananmen crackdown dead not to visit graves on 37th anniversaryPolice officers stop and search artist Sanmu Chen in the Causeway Bay area on the eve of the 37th anniversary of China's Tiananmen Square crackdown in Hong Kong, Wednesday, June 3, 2026. (AP Photo/Chan Long Hei)2026-06-04T05:45:47Z BEIJING (AP) — Chinese authorities are snuffing out any remembrance of the deadly 1989 military crackdown on student-led pro-democracy protests in Tiananmen Square, which happened 37 years ago Thursday, in a further tightening of a yearslong campaign to erase what happened from public memory.Police told relatives of the victims they would not be allowed to visit a cemetery in Beijing on the anniversary of the crackdown, a person with knowledge of the matter said. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because of fear of retribution.Relatives of the victims visited the cemetery on the anniversary for more than 30 years to read memorial statements with police keeping watch, Amnesty International said. They belong to a group called Tiananmen Mothers.Hundreds of people, and possibly thousands, were killed in 1989 as troops advanced through crowds that were trying to stop the military from reaching the protesters in Tiananmen Square, a vast plaza in the center of the Chinese capital. The decision by the Communist Party leadership to send in the military was a pivotal moment in China’s modern history, determining that the market reform that transformed the country into the world’s second largest economy would not be coupled with political liberalization. In Hong Kong, police stepped up security Thursday to prevent any kind of commemoration at or near a park where a massive candlelight vigil lit up the night on the anniversary every year until a clampdown following major anti-government protests in 2019. On Wednesday, they stopped two performance artists from making symbolic gestures in separate incidents. One briefly held up a question-mark-shaped balloon outside a department store. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who recently accompanied President Donald Trump on a state visit to Beijing, issued a statement marking the anniversary. “No amount of censorship can erase the past,” it said. “Those who sacrificed to uphold their unalienable rights of free expression and peaceful assembly will be vindicated someday.” Read More Tiananmen Mothers issued an annual appeal for justice ahead of this year’s anniversary. The statement, signed by 107 people, demanded full disclosure of what happened, compensation for the victims and their families and the pursuit of legal accountability for those responsible. “The sacrifice of our family members is an indelible pain etched in our hearts. Our tears have run dry, grief is buried deep within, what remains is eternal remembrance of our family members and hatred for the crime of massacring the people,” Zhang Xianling, a member of the group, said in a video message posted on Facebook — which is blocked in China.Amnesty said it is deeply troubling that China’s suppression of the commemoration appears to be escalating. “Banning the relatives of people killed in the Tiananmen crackdown from visiting their loved ones’ graves is a heartless act by the Chinese authorities,” Sarah Brooks, the organization’s deputy director for Asia, said in a statement. The Beijing Public Security Bureau did not respond to a faxed request for comment. Authorities in Hong Kong have banned the vigil since 2020, at first citing the COVID-19 pandemic. Three of the organizers of the vigil have been charged under a 2020 national security law. One pleaded guilty, which may result in a lesser sentence. The other two have been tried and are awaiting a verdict. One of them, lawyer Chow Hang-tung, said in an online post published last weekend that she would go on a 37-hour hunger strike in prison. “Behind the glitter of power and dictatorship lies the blood and broken dreams of ordinary people. For in amnesia lies the demise of democracy,” she wrote. Derek Chu, a former district councilor, said on Instagram that he visited Chow on Thursday and told her he would also stop eating for 37 hours to show his support. He added that a shop he runs is giving out LED candles that can be used to remember the victims.___Leung reported from Hong Kong. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMSean McVay breaks silence on Rams bringing Aaron Donald back after Myles Garrett tradeSean McVay breaks silence on Rams bringing Aaron Donald back after Myles Garrett trade originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. After the Los Angeles Rams made a blockbuster deal for Myles Garrett, many have started to hope that Aaron Donald would return to the football field. Donald retired just a few years ago, and from what we see on his social media pages, he still seems to be in very good shape. Whether that means he can come out and make an impact for a team looking to win a Super Bowl is one thing, but if there's one guy I'm not putting anything past, it's Donald. All he did throughout his career was prove that he was arguably the best defensive player of all time, and the idea of him being half as good as he was with somebody like Garrett is terrifying to think about. However, we might need to start thinking about this much more than it seemed. Speaking to reporters about it, Sean McVay, the Rams' head coach, didn't make it seem like it was out of the question for it to happen.“Listen, if he’s interested, there is no qu–here’s what I’ll say: You talk to Aaron, and you see what he’s saying about that,” McVay told reporters. “Aaron’s a guy that I stay really close in touch with, and I know the respect that he has for Myles. Talk to him about the opportunity to be able to bring him on board. If Aaron decides he wants to dust him off at the age of 35, I bet you he could still do it at a pretty high clip.”Hearing that he thinks he can do it at a pretty big clip, I'm not going to say it won't happen. However, I'd be very curious to see how things look. At worst, he should be an average player, and it would be fun to watch for all football fans.More NFL news:Justin Herbert’s comments show Tua Tagovailoa’s fans are going to be sick in a few monthsSaints’ Chris Olave gets massive contract update after Drake London’s $114 million dealBears have to act quickly after latest Packers report about adding elite edge rusher49ers believed to have enough to trade for Maxx Crosby after Myles Garrett trade to RamsMyles Garrett’s goodbye to Cleveland shows he’s the greatest Browns player everBears have no choice but to make this trade after Myles Garrett deal with Rams0 Comments 0 Shares 40 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COM‘It’s pretty clear in my mind’ – Barcelona ace shuts down exit talk amid transfer rumours‘It’s pretty clear in my mind’ – Barcelona ace shuts down exit talk amid transfer rumoursJules Kounde has moved to end the growing speculation surrounding his future at Barcelona after reports suggested the club could consider selling him if a significant offer arrives this summer. The French defender has been one of Barcelona’s most reliable performers in recent seasons, but recent rumours linking him with a possible departure have generated uncertainty about his long-term future at the club. Speaking ahead of France’s upcoming friendly with Ivory Coast, Kounde was finally given the opportunity to address the situation directly. What was said? The defender made it clear that, despite the ongoing reports, his focus remains on Barcelona and that he has no intention of looking elsewhere.During the pre-match press conference with the French national team, Kounde was asked about the possibility of leaving Barcelona despite recently extending his contract until 2030, to which he said,Kounde is committed to Barcelona. (Photo by Aitor Alcalde/Getty Images)“I have a contract until 2030. It’s pretty clear in my mind. With the French national team, those kinds of things take a back seat. “I’m focused on the competition until further notice. I’m at Barça and I hope to stay there.”The comments come at a time when Barcelona continue to assess their squad ahead of another important transfer window. While the club is believed to be open to evaluating offers for several players, Kounde’s statement suggests that he sees his future remaining in Catalonia. On the World CupThe defender also discussed his return to international duty and the work being done within the French camp ahead of the upcoming World Cup.Kounde’s focus is on the World Cup. (Photo by Judit Cartiel/Getty Images)“We’ve adapted very well to the training; it was important. We’ve all had different seasons, but now it’s time to start over on a solid foundation. We’ve run a lot. It’s gone well. We’re all excited.”Lastly, he also addressed the question of whether France are one of the favourites to win the World Cup. “I’ll leave that up to you (laughs). We don’t pay attention to that. We know we’re a quality team and that many consider us one of the favourites. “We’re aware of the team we have and our ambition, but we have to approach the competition with humility. There are also a lot of good teams we’ll be facing. “We’ll have to get off to a good start against the African champions. We’ll take it one step at a time,” he concluded.Source: Mundo Deportivo0 Comments 0 Shares 39 Views 0 Reviews

Riquelme caused significant waves on Wednesday when he publicly declared that Haaland “has a release clause and wants to join Real Madrid” – one of the most direct and public statements of transfer intent made by any club official in recent memory. The claims were made ahead of Real Madrid‘s presidential election on June 7, in which Riquelme is challenging incumbent Florentino Perez.Real Madrid presidential candidate makes bold Erling Haaland and Rodri transfer declarationsPimenta and Alfie Haaland: All very entertaining but not trueIn a joint statement relayed by transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, super agent Rafaela Pimenta and former Manchester City midfielder Alfie Haaland have responded to Riquelme’s comments.“All very entertaining, but not true. We wish all the best for both candidates in the Real Madrid elections,” the statement read.Romano has further reported that Haaland’s representatives are “absolutely, absolutely, completely, really completely relaxed” about the 25-year-old’s club future and are “not believing anything” being said by Riquelme in Madrid. What does the denial mean for City’s position? The statement will be welcomed at the Etihad Stadium, where Erling Haaland is contracted until 2034 following his extension last summer.Manchester City have never publicly indicated any willingness to entertain offers for the Norwegian, whose 87 goals in his first two seasons at the club remain one of the most extraordinary records in Premier League history.Whether Haaland’s deal does contain a release clause – and if so, under what precise conditions it can be triggered – has never been confirmed by the club or insiders.Erling Haaland breaks auction records as Man City dominate top-10 highest-selling match-worn shirtsTeam Haaland’s statement does not address that specific detail, focusing instead on the claim that the player “wants” to leave. On that front, at least, the answer is clear. What is the wider context for Real Madrid’s presidential election?Riquelme’s bold transfer pledges – targeting both Haaland and Rodri as headline signings for a potential new era at the Santiago Bernabeu – have been widely read as electioneering rather than concrete transfer planning. The June 7 vote will determine whether Perez retains the presidency or whether Riquelme takes office, with the arrival of Jose Mourinho as head coach already having energised the challenger’s campaign. For City and their supporters, Pimenta and Alfie Haaland’s statement provides a measure of reassurance; though with Rodri’s contract situation considerably less resolved, director of football Hugo Viana will be well aware that not all of the summer’s transfer challenges have been so cleanly answered.0 Comments 0 Shares 39 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMJustin Herbert’s comments show Tua Tagovailoa’s fans are going to be sick in a few monthsJustin Herbert’s comments show Tua Tagovailoa’s fans are going to be sick in a few months originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Miami Dolphins' decision to take Tua Tagovailoa over Justin Herbert continues to be one of the worst in franchise history. Many Dolphins fans wanted to argue that Tagovailoa was better than Herbert, though that ship has sailed completely now, as there's really no debate about who the better quarterback is. Not that Herbert has won a whole lot during his time with the Los Angeles Chargers, but as a player, there's no debate who the better player is.To make things even more interesting, the Dolphins and the fans who thought Tagovailoa was better than Herbert will have an opportunity to see what Herbert looks like in a Mike McDaniel offense. Tagovailoa was cut and will play for the Atlanta Falcons, while McDaniel was fired and will now be in Los Angeles. Speaking to reporters about it, it sounds like Herbert is very excited to work with the former Dolphins offensive coordinator.“It was really exciting,” Herbert said, per the Chargers. “Obviously, we have so much respect for him, and it has been so much fun getting to meet with him and talk to him and understand how he sees the game. I’ve really enjoyed my time with him so far.”“He’s a very talented and smart coach,” the quarterback later added about McDaniel. “The first few meetings [with him] were awesome. We talked more than just football and it was awesome.”It would be pretty funny to see McDaniel end up helping the Chargers win a Super Bowl after all of the talk Dolphins fans had about it. On the flip side, there are definitely going to be some Dolphins fans who still try to follow and believe in him, who think he's still better than Herbert, hoping that Herbert doesn't play well.More NFL news:Saints’ Chris Olave gets massive contract update after Drake London’s $114 million dealBears have to act quickly after latest Packers report about adding elite edge rusher49ers believed to have enough to trade for Maxx Crosby after Myles Garrett trade to RamsMyles Garrett’s goodbye to Cleveland shows he’s the greatest Browns player everBears have no choice but to make this trade after Myles Garrett deal with RamsOne factor not expected to be considered in Vikings' decision to start J.J. But the team did not hesitate to return the favor and showed a heartfelt gesture ahead of the tournament: all the players came over to sign the young man’s sticker album and gave him a national team jersey. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMYankees’ Cody Bellinger sends promise to fans after Aaron Judge injury newsYankees’ Cody Bellinger sends promise to fans after Aaron Judge injury news originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The New York Yankees have lost Aaron Judge out of the lineup, a very concerning sign for an offense that already wasn't doing what it needed to do. The Yankees are hopeful that Judge won't be out for long, though he has a bone bruise near his shoulder and doesn't sound fully healthy. To say the Yankees need multiple guys to step up in a major way would be an understatement, as they're really going to have to battle it out from one to nine in this lineup to ensure they still have a chance to not only remain in the American League East picture but also be a World Series-contending type of team when Judge is out.Speaking to reporters about that, arguably the Yankees' second-best hitter outside of Judge in terms of career accomplishments, Cody Bellinger, who has been incredible this year, ensured that they're all going to come out and be ready to go, no matter how long Judge is out for.“Huge loss in the lineup and we all gotta pick it up around him,” Bellinger said, per SNY. “We all got to come out tomorrow and get ready to play.”I never want to say that the Yankees should sit Judge if he's healthy, but even if something is nagging him right now, like the Yankees have said this shoulder injury is, it's probably better to just let him sit for a week or so, or even put him on the 15-day IL. The Yankees are absolutely not good enough to have Judge not on this roster long term, as no team in Major League Baseball would be without this star player. For that reason and more, I'd suggest keeping him out of the box for at least a couple of days.More MLB news:Yankees have a perfect opportunity to replace Ryan McMahon with 27-home run sluggerSteve Cohen has reportedly lost a shocking amount of money since owning the MetsMajor League Baseball CBA could take White House turn if teams can’t agree on dealYankees’ Carlos Lagrange report could hurt their chances of winning American League EastYankees now expected to be stuck with $16 million issue that has no resolutionTarik Skubal’s latest comments on trade rumors should be considered bad news for Dodgers0 Comments 0 Shares 39 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMLeBron James free agency report is best indication that he’ll sign with this teamLeBron James free agency report is best indication that he’ll sign with this team originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. When a guy like LeBron James becomes available, even at 41 and turning 42 at the end of December 2026, it's going to raise a lot of questions about what his future in the league looks like. There's a reason he's the greatest player of all time, and even if he isn't the same player that he once was, teams understand that he can bring them a lot of money, and owners are often looking for that.Whether he returns to the Los Angeles Lakers, goes back to the Cleveland Cavaliers, or wants to team up with somebody like Stephen Curry, there are a lot of ways that James could go about this free-agency thing this time around at this stage of his career. However, and I'm glad somebody said it, Jake Fischer recently noted that he's been told to hold off on all the speculation about James not returning to the Lakers and anything else that could happen throughout this free-agency process.“I’ve been told to hold off on speculating where LeBron is going to sign from LeBron’s side, because I think it’s very early in that regard,” Fischer said. It's still so early in the process when we really think about it, as free agency hasn't even started yet. I'd expect James to make a decision rather early in free agency, but a couple of days and weeks can definitely change things a lot for a player's decision. That's something James is eventually going to have to decide on, though there are more factors to consider now than in the past.More NBA news:Victor Wembanyama sends message to Knicks that shows he’s wiser than his ageCeltics reportedly interested in making trade for Jayson Tatum’s friend, but it doesn’t make senseBucks reportedly looking to move $283 million worth of contracts in new Giannis Antetokounmpo rumorYou won't believe Julian Champagnie's salary and contract with SpursWe know how Mitchell Robinson likely got injuredJalen Brunson was there the last time the New York Knicks were in the NBA Finals0 Comments 0 Shares 39 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMBryce Mitchell criticizes UFC White House event: 'Our government is desecrating its role'Middleweight champion Sean Strickland revealed on Wednesday that he was 'banned' from attending the UFC Freedom 250 event on June 14 at the White House. According to Strickland, criticism of Israel, the war in Iran and the handling of the Epstein Files led to him being uninvited. During the UFC Vegas 118 Media Day, bantamweight Bryce Mitchell was asked about Strickland being prohibited from attending the historic event. "Thug Nasty" said he wasn't surprised by the development. "I'm not surprised at all. Freedom of speech is what really makes this country great. When you can't criticize a foreign nation, a foreign nation, come on, man. We ought to be able to criticize our own nation, let a long a foreign nation. In fact, that's the only nation you're not allowed to criticize, you know," said Mitchell. "Something's going to change because evil empires don't last forever. There's always a rebellion. You ever seen Star Wars? That's what's going to happen, bro. Darth Vader's going to get took down."Mitchell isn't a fan of the UFC event taking place at the White House, or any sporting event. His objections weren't with the fight promotion, they were with the government. "First off, I ain't jealous of any of those fighters. I am so happy for those fighters. I don't think you could have got a better main event. I'm happy for every single last fighter on that card," Mitchell said. "For the UFC, I think it's great. It's beyond great. It's literally the perfect scenario. But as far as the government. "I'm an economics major. I love studying politics. On the political side of things, not the UFC's business. Of course they're going to say yes to it. But what I think personally is our government is desacrating its role in society by entertaining sports," said Mitchell. "Our government is to protect and serve the people and really should be as minimal as possible. When you're doing all this stuff, hosting sporting events, it's really outside of what the goal of government was intended to be because our tax dollars and resources are funding this operation. And like I said, I'm not criticizing the UFC. I love Dana [White]. I love Hunter [Campbell]. I love Sean [Shelby], Mick [Maynard]. I love all of them. And it's an amazing thing. It's a once-in-a-lifetime thing. But the government should never be hosting sporting events because there's more room for corruption and we already have a corrupted government. And so, that's my thoughts on it is the government is supposed to protect us, not entertain us."Mitchell (18-3) faces undefeated prospect Santiago Luna (8-0) on the UFC Vegas 118 main card on Saturday at the Meta Apex in Las Vegas.0 Comments 0 Shares 39 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMVirgil van Dijk says he wasn’t consulted about Arne Slot’s sacking; only knew after it ‘leaked’Virgil van Dijk says he wasn’t consulted about Arne Slot’s sacking; only knew after it ‘leaked’Virgil van Dijk has said that he wasn’t consulted by Liverpool about their decision to sack Arne Slot before the news was announced on Saturday, only learning of it a few hours after it had already entered the public domain.DOWNLOAD THE OFFICIAL EMPIRE OF THE KOP APP FOR ALL THE LATEST & BREAKING UPDATES – STRAIGHT TO YOUR PHONE! ON APPLE & GOOGLE PLAYIt was widely reported that FSG would continue to back the 47-year-old despite the Reds’ difficult 2025/26 season, but a senior figure at the Boston-based firm later acknowledged that they ‘reluctantly had to’ part ways with him after finding that the ’emotion was sucked out of’ Anfield. The Daily Mail‘s Lewis Steele reported that the sacking came as a surprise to the coach and the LFC players, and that’s certainly true of the club captain.Van Dijk didn’t know Liverpool were about to sack SlotSpeaking to Dutch outlet NOS (via Liverpool Echo) after Netherlands’ defeat to Algeria on Wednesday night, Van Dijk proclaimed that he wasn’t briefed in advance about Liverpool’s intentions to dismiss Slot and only discovered the news once he’d touched down in his homeland. He said: “I landed in Amsterdam on Saturday afternoon and then it had already leaked. After that I naturally had conversations, but the decision was already taken. It is not like they ask me how or what.”Barely concealing his annoyance over the situation, he added: “We are now living in a world where [every journalist] wants to be the first person to break the news. These people are the ones that benefit from it. Yeah… this is the reality.”Want more Empire of the Kop coverage? Add us as a preferred source on Google to your favourites list for news you can trustSurprising that Van Dijk wasn’t at least consultedThe Reds captain then placed on record his gratitude for the 47-year-old and his staff ‘for everything they have meant, not only to me but also to the club’.We don’t expect the hierarchy to consult everyone at the club about major hiring and firing decisions, but it does seem surprising that as captain, Van Dijk wasn’t informed of FSG’s intentions before they jettisoned Slot. That he had no idea it was coming until finding out after he touched down in Amsterdam that afternoon also seems to hint that the decision was taken somewhat hurriedly, a school of thought backed up by the apparent surprise of the coach and players upon learning the news.Would the 34-year-old have tried to convince the hierarchy to stick with his compatriot, had they sought his opinion or included him in the decision-making process? Possibly, but it’s a question to which we’ll never have a clear answer.Once Van Dijk returns from the World Cup in a few weeks’ time, he and his Liverpool teammates will be getting accustomed to the rituals and tactical ideas of Andoni Iraola, who could be officially confirmed as our new head coach in the next day or two. That in itself shows just how quickly football moves on – less than a week ago, it seemed for all the world as though Slot would be leading the Reds into a third season at the helm. Instead, he’s now unemployed and available for any opportunities of interest to him.0 Comments 0 Shares 39 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWI vs SL, 1st ODI: Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis shine as Sri Lanka beat West Indies by 41 runsNEW DELHI: Pathum Nissanka's composed 79 and skipper Kusal Mendis' fluent 72 powered Sri Lanka to a 41-run victory over the West Indies in the opening ODI on Wednesday. After being asked to bat first, Sri Lanka posted a competitive 303/7, built around a crucial 136-run second-wicket partnership between Nissanka and Mendis. Charith Asalanka chipped in with 45, while Janith Liyanage remained unbeaten on 44 to provide the finishing touches. In reply, West Indies captain Shai Hope led the chase with a 66-ball 56 and opener Justin Greaves struck 45 off 38 deliveries. However, despite a couple of promising partnerships, the hosts were bowled out for 262 in the final over. The chase began steadily, with West Indies adding 50 runs for the opening wicket and another 52 for the third. But regular wickets disrupted their momentum and the required rate continued to rise. Roston Chase offered some resistance with 33, but his dismissal — bowled by Dushmantha Chameera — effectively ended the contest. Chameera finished as Sri Lanka's standout bowler with figures of 4/67.Having won the toss on a surface expected to assist slower bowlers, West Indies opted to field first and made an early breakthrough when Kamindu Mendis departed for 12 in the seventh over.Nissanka and Kusal Mendis then seized control of the innings, combining for 136 runs to put Sri Lanka in a commanding position. Mendis scored a brisk 72 from 62 balls before falling with the score at 158/2, while Nissanka continued to anchor the innings before being dismissed for 79 off 102 deliveries.West Indies needed breakthroughs during the middle overs, but Asalanka and Liyanage frustrated the bowlers with a valuable 64-run stand for the fifth wicket, helping Sri Lanka cross the 300-run mark.Hope's dismissal at 167/5 in the 31st over left West Indies with an uphill task, and the lower order failed to mount a serious challenge thereafter. There was a brief interruption late in the match when a floodlight malfunction forced the players off the field because of bad light. By then, however, the result was virtually settled, with West Indies requiring 43 runs from just eight balls with one wicket in hand. The second ODI of the three-match series will be played in Kingston on Saturday, with the final match scheduled for Monday at Sabina Park.0 Comments 0 Shares 39 Views 0 Reviews
