He received backlash from the fans, who believed the side needed his presence at a crucial time in the season.Real Madrid have endured successive seasons without silverware since Mbappe's arrival. Tabiner ready for Crewe return after year out injured
Crewe Alexandra midfielder Joel Tabiner says he is feeling fit and confident over his return to first-team football after missing the whole of last season because of a knee injury. The 22-year-old has not played since suffering ligament damage in a pre-season friendly in July last year and has been on a near year-long rehabilitation programme to be ready for the start of the new campaign.Tabiner, who made his debut for the Alex as a 17-year-old in November 2001, last played for the first team in April 2025 in a 2-0 defeat by Tranmere Rovers."It was really frustrating," he told BBC Radio Stoke. "I've done all the work now, so I've just got to look forward. I know I've put all the work in, so I'm confident coming back."I'm quite strong-minded, so as soon as I got injured, I sort of looked at the positives instead of the negatives and just from day one started working on it straight away."Tabiner, who has made 112 appearances for the Railwaymen, added because he is "pretty much in line with where I should be", he will be ready to take a full part when the pre-season schedule starts next month. "I sort of ruled the whole season out just to make sure that I did everything properly, so I should be on track."I've just been doing the gym every day, pretty much, so I can't wait to get back really; I've been waiting for it all year."Crewe must enjoy pressure of new season - DemetriouCrewe chief Grant disappointed at play-off failureNotts County sign midfielder Sanders from Crewe'No chance' Tezgel & O'Reilly will return to CreweAfter watching the side finish 11 points adrift of the top seven in League Two last season after their play-off challenge faded late on, Tabiner said the aim to win promotion will not be any different in 2026-27. "I feel like since we've been in League Two, the expectation is promotion, and I think obviously it'll be a different group this year, but every group I've been in the changing room with wants to get promoted and expects us to get promoted," he said."We know that with the talent we've already got, and we'll probably be bringing in, we should be competing up there."Last season, I didn't think we were far [off] at all; I think it was just down to a bit of consistency. We had a lot of injuries, so hopefully everything can just come together, and with the quality we have, we should be right up there."It looks like a proper League Two this year with all the teams that have come into it, so there's going to be a lot of experienced teams, a lot of know-how."

Tottenham Hotspur table offer to sign Brighton & Hove Albion defender Jan Paul van Hecke
Tottenham Hotspur table offer to sign Brighton & Hove Albion defender Jan Paul van HeckeTottenham Hotspur have accelerated their summer recruitment by submitting a formal opening bid to Brighton & Hove Albion for defender Jan Paul van Hecke. After securing Premier League survival on the final day under Roberto De Zerbi, Spurs are moving quickly to back their manager and overhaul a fragile defence. With star centre-back Cristian Romero widely expected to leave north London this summer, securing a commanding, elite distributor has become an urgent priority for the Tottenham hierarchy.De Zerbi worked with Van Hecke during his time on the south coast, where the 25-year-old Dutchman developed into one of the league’s standout defenders. Across the 2025/26 campaign, Van Hecke anchored Brighton’s backline, amassing 3,211 minutes, posting an impressive 87% passing accuracy and winning a combined 209 duels. His familiarity with De Zerbi’s high-risk, build-from-the-back approach makes him a seamless, plug-and-play leader for a changing dressing room.Securing Van Hecke will be no straightforward task, given Brighton’s reputation for demanding premium fees for their top assets. However, Tottenham hold a strategic advantage as the defender’s contract expires next year and he has so far shown no willingness to sign fresh terms.Tactically, Van Hecke offers the blend of defensive steel and progressive distribution that Tottenham lacked during their recent relegation scare. While Spurs have seen their opening bid for the Dutchman rejected, negotiations with Brighton are set to continue. Should Tottenham finalise a deal in the coming days, Van Hecke would arrive as the cornerstone of a potential new central defensive partnership alongside incoming signing Marcos Senesi.

Man City consider legal action after Real Madrid presidential candidate vows to sign Erling Haaland
Manchester City are considering taking legal action after a Real Madrid presidential candidate promised to take Erling Haaland to the Bernabeu. City say there is no chance of their top scorer leaving and no clause in his contract to mean Real can get him away from the Etihad Stadium. Enrique Riquelme, who is challenging the incumbent president Florentino Perez, held up a Real shirt with “Haaland 9” on the back during an appearance on Spanish television in which he claimed the Norway international had a release clause and wants to join the 15-times European champions.[EXCLUSIVA] El FICHAJE ESTRELLA de Enrique Riquelme #RiquelmeEHpic.twitter.com/XziduVyN68— El Hormiguero (@El_Hormiguero) June 3, 2026 But a City club spokesperson said: “The stories which have emerged from Spain regarding the future of Erling Haaland are untrue. “There is no chance of this happening and there is no contractual clause to enable it. We are considering legal action for the use of our player image in this context.” Haaland’s father and agent also issued a joint statement, rebutting Iglesias’s claim. Alfie Haaland and Rafaela Pimenta said: “All very entertaining but not true. We wish all the best for both candidates in the Madrid elections.” Haaland, who joined City from Borussia Dortmund in 2022, has eight seasons left on the nine-and-a-half year contract extension he signed in January 2025. The 25-year-old has scored 162 goals in 198 games for City and won the Premier League’s Golden Boot for the third time this season, when he struck 27 times in the top flight and 38 in all competitions.Meanwhile, current president Perez made his own election promise on Wednesday night, revealing Jose Mourinho wearing a Real Madrid saying “yes” amid speculation that he is set to return as manager. Perez is seeking his eighth term as president and wants to bring former coach Mourinho back to the Bernabeu following a second consecutive season without a trophy. Jose Mourinho appeared in a Real Madrid shirt during Florentino Perez's campaign video (@Florentino2026_/X)Fulham boss Marco Silva is set to replace Mourinho at Benfica, clearing the former Chelsea, Manchester United and Inter Milan manager to return to Real Madrid following a three-year spell that ended in 2013. Real Madrid’s presidential election will be decided by the club’s members. It is the first contested election since 2006.

TST Best Bets: June 4, 2026
Vegas Golden Knights center Jack Eichel (9) shoots the puck during a NHL game between the Vegas Golden Knights and the Carolina Hurricanes, Monday October 20, 2025 in Las Vegas, Nev.Game 1 of the NHL Stanley Cup Final showed just how electrifying things can get when two high-caliber contenders in the Carolina Hurricanes and Las Vegas Golden Knights square off. Hurricane left winger Nikolaj Ehlers had himself a night in the opening frame, scoring only 25 seconds into the period. Ehlers remained hot, tallying another goal nearly 12 minutes later. Unfazed, Las Vegas swiftly countered, knotting the matchup at 2-2 early into the second period. The action snowballed from there with both squads exchanging goals until Golden Knight center Tomáš Hertl banked in the game-sealing goal 16:36 into the third period. Meanwhile in MLB, Shohei Ohtani propelled the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 7-0 shutout victory over the NL West-rival Arizona Diamondbacks with a masterclass on the mound, striking out six batters while only allowing two hits and a single walk. With the win, he now holds an astounding 0.74 ERA and is 6-2 on the season as a pitcher. Ohtani shined at the plate as well, getting on base in three out of his four appearances. To come out a champion this postseason, here are tonight's best bets brought to you by BetOnline.org. Click here to join. All new players get a 50% welcome bonus and up to $250 in free bets.First Pick: Hurricanes Under 5.5 GoalsRundown: Despite Tuesday's loss, Carolina has another excellent opportunity at defending home ice with a 29-10-2 advantage at Lenovo Center.Throughout the NHL playoffs, the Hurricanes have shown why they are a force to be reckoned with. So far, left winger Taylor Hall leads the way with 16 points and 11 assists, a decent ramp-up from his 18 regular-season goals and 48 points. Even as Hall went silent during Game 1 of this series, Jordan Staal stepped up with an equalizer in the second period. Shayne Gostisbehere also came through with a game-tying goal of his own, making the contest, 4-4, 11:19 into the final frame.Meanwhile for Las Vegas, goalie Carter Hart held on with 23 saves amid four goals allowed. Brett Howden has been a major bright spot offensively with 11 goals thus far. Most notably, Howden put the Golden Knights up 4-3 with an early third-period goal, paving the way for Hertl to finish the job. William Karlsson, Shea Theodore and Ivan Barbashev found the back of the net, too, effectively frazzling goalie Frederik Andersen and leaving him without an answer. With Carolina's intensity and impressive track record at home, bettors can anticipate a bounce-back game.Second Pick: Dodgers MoneylineRundown: The Los Angeles Dodgers (40-22) will look for the series victory against the Arizona Diamondbacks (32-29) in tonight's rubber matchup at Chase Field. In addition to Ohtani, Kyle Tucker was another standout contributor in the Dodgers' commanding victory over Arizona. Tucker set the stage in the second inning, launching a two-run homer to right center and giving L.A. an early 2-0 lead. Freddie Freeman added to the frenzy in the third with an RBI single, driving in Ohtani and Andy Pages. Max Muncy and Alex Freeland logged RBIs as well, sealing the Diamondbacks' fate. Heading into tonight, Justin Wrobleski is set to take the mound with a 2.87 ERA and 40 strikeouts. As for Arizona, Ryne Nelson is the next arm up with a 4.82 ERA. Despite it being higher than Wrobleski's, Nelson has managed to earn 52 strikeouts on the season. Even so, hopes for the rest of the Diamondbacks' rotation appear dim after Corbin Burnes suffered a teres major strain, a major setback for an already lengthy rehabilitation. On the other hand, hitting is where Arizona excels. A part of that spark is Ildemaro Vargas with his .286 batting average and 37 RBI. Corbin Carroll has progressed as well with a .373 OBP and team-best 61 hits.Given L.A.'s momentum and Wrobleski's consistency, it is no surprise they are the heavy favorite here.

Monaco and Nottingham Forest in for RB Leipzig’s Lois Openda
Monaco and Nottingham Forest in for RB Leipzig’s Lois OpendaLois Openda (26) spent last season on loan at Juventus. His loan to the Serie A giants included a buy option, but it has yet to be triggered and so he may return to parent club Red Bull Leipzig. He may not stay there, however, with interest growing in the Belgium international, as per a report from Gianluca Di Marzio. It was an underwhelming season in Turin for Openda, who in 37 games in all competitions, netted just twice. Since leaving RC Lens in 2023 for €40m, he has netted 41 goals in 93 games for RB Leipzig. At Lens, during the season in which Les Sang et Or finished just one point behind eventual champions Paris Saint-Germain, Openda scored 21 goals in 42 games. He could now be set for a return to France’s top-flight amid interest from AS Monaco. He could be a potential replacement for Folarin Balogun, who is attracting Premier League interest. Openda is also attracting Premier League interest, with Nottingham Forest in the race to sign the forward. There is also interest from Germany in the form of Eintracht Frankfurt.GFFN | Luke Entwistle

Man City may need to break transfer record to sign Elliot Anderson after opening bid rejected
Manchester City have had a first offer for Elliot Anderson rejected by Nottingham Forest. City have stepped up their search for a replacement for departing captain Bernardo Silva by making an opening bid for England international Anderson. Anderson has also attracted interest from Manchester United, though City have long been the favourites to sign the former Newcastle player, while Michael Carrick is set to start his summer business with a £35m deal for Ederson’s Atalanta. And Forest are thought to value the 23-year-old at £100m, if not more, while Anderson has three years left on his contract at the City Ground.Premier League clubs have paid nine-figure sums for three midfielders, with Chelsea breaking the British transfer record for first Enzo Fernandez and then Moises Caicedo and then Arsenal paying £105m for Declan Rice. City’s current record signing is Jack Grealish, who cost £100m in 2021, while they have paid out around £430m for new signings in the last three transfer windows. While Silva has confirmed his departure, there are also doubts if other City midfielders will stay with Rodri saying he will address his future after the World Cup, amid talk of a move to Real Madrid, and questions if Nico Gonzalez will leave.

Should Manchester United Sign Ederson: Is This a Good Transfer Move?
‘Manchester United sign Ederson’ is a headline soon to be completed. The Brazilian midfielder, who is going to be 27 next month, is going to cost United £38 million.Should Manchester United sign Ederson, it will be a move that effectively replaces Casemiro in the Red Devils’ squad. This will be the first Manchester United transfer of the season. Ederson is moderately experienced in European football and should prove to be a quality signing. If Manchester United Sign Ederson It Will Give Them a Holding MidfielderEderson has played in Italy for the last five seasons and registered a total of 195 appearances for Salernitana and Atalanta, scoring 18 goals in them. Ederson also won the Europa League in the 2023/24 season with Atalanta. All of that makes Ederson a moderately experienced player, who has played his part in making Atalanta a respectable proposition in Italian football in recent years. He can play both as a deep-lying playmaker as well as a box-to-box midfielder, which makes him a great player to have in one’s team.United already have Kobbie Mainoo in their line-up, who has played in more than 100 matches for the club already. Having Ederson alongside him in the double-pivot is going to be an enticing proposition for Michael Carrick’s team.Ederson’s superior experience should provide Manchester United with a calming assurance and should allow Mainoo to play his natural game for the team. Mainoo should enjoy venturing forward, with Ederson staying deep and pulling the strings. The Brazilian will, however, have to get used to the pace of the Premier League, which is higher than that of Serie A. It might take him some time, but Carrick should be happy to give him that.YOU MAY ALSO LIKE: Club América Fires André Jardine, Libertadores and Sudamericana Knockout Draws Revealed| Source: Lastwordonsports.com - Steen KirbyEderson Manchester United Transfer Means No Elliot AndersonUnited were after Anderson as well, but the Nottingham Forest midfielder has not committed to the club yet. Manchester City are also after Anderson’s signature and it remains to be seen whether the Englishman opts to play for the Cityzens from next season onwards.Should United manage to get Anderson, too, it will make their midfield one of the strongest in the Premier League. With the Red Devils set to play in the Champions League next season, they will need a bigger squad to function. Hence, the signings of Ederson and Anderson could come in handy. If Anderson does not decide to come to Manchester United, it will mean that Ederson will get a lot of game time for the club. That will give them a lot of responsibility and the Brazilian should enjoy it at this stage of his career. There was a Brazilian midfielder named Anderson, who played for United with some distinction for quite a few seasons. Now, it is up to another Brazilian after Anderson and Casemiro to play as a holding midfielder for the Manchester-based club. Hopefully, Ederson will be able to do justice to the signing amount United are going to spend on him.United supporters will hope that, should Manchester United sign Ederson, it turns out to be a good move for them.Main PhotoCredit: IMAGO / Marco Canoniero

Real Madrid target Arsenal and Man City stars as big move launched – transfer round-upReal Madrid are set to target Arsenal and Manchester City stars this summer, as they hope to return to the top.The Spanish giants have failed to win a trophy in each of the last two seasons – a period of relative turmoil at the club. Consequently a busy transfer window is expected from the 15-time European champions. This could impact a number of Premier League sides. With Jose Mourinho is set to be named as Real Madrid’s new manager in the coming days, The Mirror report that the coach wants a reunion with his former player and current Arsenal defender Riccardo Calafiori.A versatile option at the back, the Italy international played under the Portuguese manager at Roma. The 24-year-old will not be available for anything cheaper than the £42 million the Gunners paid for him two years ago.Real Madrid are also considering a move for Declan Rice, according to the BBC. Arsenal’s record signing, the midfielder was critical to their success last season and the Englishman is in line to claim the club’s Player of the Year award for a second consecutive campaign. It would take an astronomical fee to lure him to the Bernabeu. It is not just Arsenal stars who are in Real Madrid’s crosshairs this summer. Los Blancos are also eyeing two of Manchester City’s most-important men.Currently embroiled in a battle with Florentino Perez for the club’s presidency, candidate Enrique Riquelme has promised two massive signings. He has vowed to bring both Erling Haaland and Rodri to the Bernabeu, if he is successful in his candidacy. His comments would have sparked concern at the Etihad, although Haland’s camp swiftly denied the validity of Riquelme’s claims.Meanwhile, City have been busy launching their own major move. It is understood that City are leading the race for the England international’s signature. The Athletic say that City have now had an opening offer for the 23-year-old rejected. Barcelona monitoring underrated La Liga defender who could cost between €30-35 million
Barcelona monitoring underrated La Liga defender who could cost between €30-35 millionBarcelona’s search for defensive reinforcements appears to have taken a new direction, with Real Betis defender Natan emerging as a player of interest ahead of the summer transfer window.According to reports from El Chiringuito TV, the Catalan club has recently stepped up their monitoring of the Brazilian centre-back as they continue exploring options to strengthen their backline. While signing a new central defender is not currently viewed as the club’s highest priority, Barcelona remain attentive to opportunities that could improve the squad without placing excessive strain on their finances. The profile being sought is a left-footed centre-back capable of providing balance in defence and fitting into Hansi Flick’s tactical plans.Barcelona add Natan to defensive shortlistBarcelona have spent recent months assessing several candidates for the role, with some ambitious names previously linked to the club.Barcelona are keeping an eye on Natan. (Photo by Fran Santiago/Getty Images)Manchester City’s Josko Gvardiol was one of the defenders admired by the Blaugrana, but recent developments suggest the Croatian could commit his future to the Premier League side through a new contract.Meanwhile, Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni was considered Barcelona’s preferred option, although the financial demands associated with a deal eventually led the club to move away from that pursuit. That situation has opened the door for alternative targets, and Natan has now emerged as one of the names under consideration.A strong candidate? The 25-year-old offers several qualities that make him an attractive option. Natan is a solid La Liga defender. (Photo by Fran Santiago/Getty Images)In addition to being left-footed, he already has experience in La Liga and would likely cost significantly less than some of Europe’s elite defenders, with his valuation believed to be between €30 million and €35 million. His performances for Real Betis during the 2025/26 campaign have also caught attention, as Natan recorded 32 tackles and 37 interceptions throughout the season while proving highly effective in aerial duels. His ability to defend one-on-one situations was another standout aspect of his game, with opponents rarely managing to beat him.Although the Brazilian may not generate the same excitement as players such as Bastoni or Gvardiol, there is a strong argument that he could represent a smart and realistic signing because he is still young and would not cost much.

Konaté Opens Up About Playing Through Depression
LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - MAY 24: Ibrahima Konate of Liverpool during the Premier League match between Liverpool and Brentford at Anfield on May 24, 2026 in Liverpool, England. (Photo by Jack Thomas/Getty Images) | Getty Images Ibrahima Konaté has spoken about playing through much of this Liverpool FC season with depression after experiencing the passing of Diogo Jota, as well as his own father this past year.Speaking with France Inter radio station whilst prepping for the World Cup with the French national team, Ibou had this to say about Jota’s passing:“Even today it’s hard to believe. His locker was still there in the dressing room, and every day when I was going to training he was coming with us. I remember when I found out when I was in Los Angeles and I couldn’t believe it. It devastated me. I didn’t have any interest in anything else at that point. It was the last person anyone would have chosen this to happen to. He didn’t care about anything. He just wanted to be happy and to have a good time with his team-mates and his family. He wasn’t interested in fame. He was my neighbour as well, so I shared a few more moments with him. It was something powerful that happened to all of us.”“You go back to football because you have no choice. We’re employees at a club that pays us every month, so we have duties. I think every fan was affected by this too, and I think all that we can do to help them is by winning games. We had no choice but to go back on the field and play for him and his family – as well as ourselves. There’s no way of getting over it, but you learn to live with it.”On his father, Konaté said:“I’ve never spoken about it before, but it’s true that at the start of the season, my father was in hospital for several weeks. And actually, in my situation, I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t know whether I should go home and stop playing, because the team needed me too. I didn’t know who to talk to about it, so I kept it all to myself. And this is the advice I’d give to everyone listening: when you’re feeling down or something’s going on, you need to talk to those around you. It can help you and do you good. I didn’t talk about it and kept it to myself. The doctors then told us he didn’t have long to live, but we didn’t know it would happen so quickly.”“There was never a moment when I felt like I was on the mend. All of these tragic events happened so quickly and, as soon as I felt like I was getting my head above water, something else happened. But then I had the support of all these fans, who are exceptional at Liverpool. My team-mates and especially my family, but I also had to learn how to get back on my feet on my own because the team needed me more than ever. And I told myself that it happens to everyone every day, and I know that my father would have wanted me to get back.”“There are low points, there’s depression. And I think depression is something much deeper, and that it’s an illness people live with every day. You can suffer from depression in football too; there’s no need to be ashamed to say so. And it can be triggered by anything and everything. It’s true that I’ve often heard players say they were suffering from depression and that fans or people on the outside didn’t understand because they were earning a lot of money. But no, that’s rubbish and you shouldn’t say that. Depression is personal; it’s deep inside you. When you’re depressed, it starts in the heart, goes up to the brain and takes over your whole body. For me, that’s what’s hard, and we need to talk about it.”For so many reasons, it was a trying season for everyone involved. I think with more time and distance, and with the eventual reveal of more details, there will be a greater understanding of what this group of players had to go through. All the best with everything, Ibou.

EXCLUSIVE| 'I am hopeful': RCB's Krunal Pandya sets sights on India comeback after five-year absence
Royal Challengers Bengaluru all-rounder Krunal Pandya has said he remains hopeful of making an India comeback despite being out of the national side for almost five years.Krunal, who played a key role in RCB's successful IPL 2026 title defence, contributed with both bat and ball during the season. He scored 226 runs at a strike rate of 145.80 and picked up 14 wickets at an economy rate of 8.41 as RCB won their second consecutive IPL title. The 34-year-old last represented India in a T20I against Sri Lanka in Colombo on July 25, 2021. Since then, he has played in the IPL for Lucknow Super Giants and RCB.Speaking to Times of India, Krunal said representing India remains the biggest achievement for any cricketer."There is no better feeling than playing for the country. When I was six or seven years old, there was no IPL. The biggest dream for any cricketer was to play for India. I dreamt about it my entire life and got that opportunity in 2018. In the 18 games I played, I did decently well. I won a Man of the Match in Australia and New Zealand and a Man of the Series in the West Indies. I had a good run with the Indian team. Later, when I got another opportunity in One-day cricket, I did pretty well again."While admitting that being out of the national side can be disappointing, Krunal said he tries not to focus too much on selection and instead reminds himself why he started playing cricket."I don’t think too much about selection now. Of course, I am human and there is disappointment at times. But, you have to remind yourself why you started playing cricket. I have immense love for the sport, and that’s what keeps me going."Asked whether he still believes he can return to the Indian team, Krunal made it clear that the hope remains alive. 131497369"Yeah, hope is always there, right? I am hopeful that I’ll get the opportunity again to play for the country. Fingers crossed, but I am hopeful." Read the full interview here

The Isle of Man TT has long been regarded as the most dangerous race in the world - a 37 and three-quarter mile mountain course with over 200 bends, lined with stone walls, telegraph poles and unforgiving cambers. For former winner Steve Plater, its pull remains as powerful as ever, regarding it as an "annual pilgrimage", a place he loves both for its racing and its quiet moments away from the paddock. But even for a rider who conquered the event, including a standout Senior TT victory, watching it back years later stirred unexpected emotion."I went back and watched my 2009 Senior success for the first time recently and it brings a tear to your eye," he told the BBC Bikes Podcast."It really, really does."That success, Plater admits, only truly sank in once he stepped away from racing."Sometimes it's when you hang up the leathers you actually really understand what you were able to achieve," the 57 year-old continued."I must have been crackers."Despite his achievements, Plater is candid about the sheer peril of the TT. Standing trackside, he thinks the speeds look almost unimaginable."I think I must have been crackers - it looks so fast on the side of the road."Riders routinely exceed 200 miles per hour through tree-lined sections where flickering light and blind entries demand absolute precision. According to Plater, the TT is "mentally demanding rather than physically", a six-lap race that feels like "15 short circuits in one lap".Learning the course is an ordeal in itself."Some parts look the same, you need to understand what section is coming next," he explains. "Even with support from experienced mentors, nothing prepares newcomers for the reality of a full speed lap."Nerves and the moment the visor dropsPlater, a former British Supersport champion, speaks openly about the nerves that accompany race day. He would run on the morning of each race, using the solitude to settle himself. Even on the start line, he says, he answered TV interviewer questions on "autopilot", his mind already deep in the lap ahead. But once the flag twitches, everything changes and "you're into work mode".The first miles, especially through Bray Hill with a full tank and cold tyres, remain the most unsettling. "I hated Bray Hill; the bike's unstable, it doesn't like the road surface."Trust in the machine, the team and perfect preparation for Plater was key.Plater's road racing career spanned every major international event from the North West 200 to the Ulster Grand Prix and Macau Grand Prix - and he won at all of them. But the success came at a cost. He suffered several serious injuries, including a broken neck after a high speed crash at the North West 200. Remarkably, he was back racing just eight weeks later. That determination, he says, was less bravery than the ingrained mindset of a racer - the instinct to get up, rebuild and go again. His journey is all the more striking given where it began. Before racing, Plater worked as a bricklayer and "drinking, smoking and doing the naughty things you get up to", but once he discovered competitive motorcycling at 26, he says he "never looked back", a sentiment that underlines both the scale of his achievements and the resilience that carried him through the sport's most dangerous moments.Today Plater remains deeply involved in the sport, working with teams, supporting newcomers and hosting events. But the TT, where he works in the hospitality marquee, still holds a unique place in his life - a place of triumph, danger and enduring respect.

EXCLUSIVE | 'I was a passport agent, car broker before cricket': Krunal Pandya opens up on life's struggles
NEW DELHI: Royal Challengers Bengaluru all-rounder Krunal Pandya's journey to becoming a five-time IPL champion is a story of grit, sacrifice and resilience. Before IPL titles, India caps and recognition, Krunal's daily routine revolved around paperwork, affidavits and helping people buy second-hand cars for a small commission.Fresh off back-to-back IPL titles with RCB and a fifth IPL crown overall, Krunal reflected on the struggles that shaped him long before cricket brought fame and success. From working as a passport agent alongside his father Himanshu Pandya to brokering second-hand cars, the left-arm spinner believes the lessons learned away from the cricket field helped him thrive under pressure. In an exclusive interaction with Times of India, Krunal explained why difficult situations bring the best out of him and how his upbringing shaped his approach towards cricket and life."I actually wait and crave for situations where it is tough. I don’t know, I guess my way of playing cricket is actually what I’ve learned through my life. So, it’s a lot to do how, at a very young age, my... I’ll just go back to my growing up days. When I was 11-12 years old, I used to work with my dad. My dad was a passport advisor agent, so, at 12, I used to go with him. So, I experienced life through business with my dad, mom, at a very young age. And then I realized how tough life is. Sometimes our parents don’t tell us while we are growing up, and my parents were also like that. But I did that at 14-15, I used to be with my dad. I myself was a passport agent. I used to make ration cards for people," Krunal said. The influence of his late father remains central to Krunal's outlook on life and cricket. Having witnessed life's realities at a young age, he says those experiences taught him never to back down from a challenge and helped him embrace pressure situations rather than fear them."Then I used to be a car broker once upon a time. So, I’ve seen life at a very young age from very close quarters. So I guess when I play the sport, I play the same way. I don’t give up. And when the situation is tough, I’m like, ‘I have to win it’. I’ve always realised one thing. You play the sport the way you live your life. Because at the end of the day, you only have one brain, It’s not that in cricket you will use another brain and another brain for life."Long before he was lifting IPL trophies with Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Krunal was spending his days helping people complete paperwork, arrange documents and navigate government processes. He also worked as a car broker, earning modest commissions on second-hand vehicle sales.Asked about the fanciest car he sold during his days as a broker, Krunal laughed and recalled the humble reality of those years."We used to sell second-hand cars. It used to be 3-4 lakh rupees. You used to get a commission of Rs 3000, agent fee. I was a passport agent myself. I used to fill forms. I used to do affidavits. I used to do paperwork, everyone’s ration card, light bill, then two ID proofs, school leaving certificate, filling forms online, taking it, getting the Xerox copy, then getting the affidavit done, visiting Times of India office for name corrections via paper cuttings. Yeah, I have done a lot of things." 131497277Krunal, one of the IPL's most successful players, with five titles to his name, played a key role in RCB's successful title defence in IPL 2026. In 16 matches, he scored 226 runs at a strike rate of 145.80 and also claimed 14 wickets.

In Game 1 of the NBA Finals against the San Antonio Spurs, Hart only had three points, but he still had significant help to give the Knicks a 105-95 win.Hart was only 1-for-5 from the field and had trouble scoring. Despite his offensive struggles, the Knicks forward found other ways to contribute. The former Villanova star had 15 rebounds, six assists, four steals and a block. His final stats in the box score rivaled NBA legend Larry Bird, who had 25 points, 15 rebounds, 11 assists and four steals in Game 3 of the 1986 Finals.Hart is the first player to finish a game with 15+ rebounds, 6+ assists and 4+ steals. After the game, Knicks fans raved about Josh Hart’s performance on X. Here are some of what the fans said about Hart.“A bonafide pest. He showed some of those spurs guards that there are levels to being a pest😂” a fan said.“As clutch as Brunson was, THIS man was the clear and obvious MVP. Those rebounds were BACKBREAKING. The Spurs have nobody like him. He is one of one,” another fan commented.“His scrapiness was awesome,” one fan said.“Got every 50/50 ball late in the 4th, huge contributions tonight,” someone commented.“Best utility guy in the NBA. However, Brunson still gave credit to the work that Hart did for the team and had high praise for his close friend during his postgame interview. The three-time All-Star was asked about his thoughts on Hart making a massive impact in the game despite having an off-night shooting the basketball.“That’s just who he is,” Brunson said. “He’s always been that way. I can’t explain — he just has a knack for doing things like that in crucial times, as well. It’s a credit to who he is as a player.”"He's always been that way. 'Priority to keep my place in the team' - McConville
Northern Ireland defender Ruairi McConville said the friendlies against Guinea and France are a chance "to impress Michael O'Neill and show him what you can do".Manager O'Neill has recently signed a new contract to keep him at the helm until 2032 after turning down a full-time position at Blackburn Rovers, a job he held on a temporary basis at the end of last season while also at NI. Now, with his full focus on Northern Ireland, he will aim to grow his young squad and build momentum for the Nations League campaign which starts in September.During both his tenures as Northern Ireland manager, O'Neill has given younger players a chance, including McConville who made his senior debut in 2024."The priority for me, it's just trying to play again and try and keep my place in this team," McConville told BBC Sport NI."It's another opportunity to impress Michael and show him what you can do and hopefully keep my spot going into the big game on Monday [against France]."I think missing a few boys at the back, it's maybe a different feeling about it this time. Again, I'm still just trying to learn as much as I can off the boys here and obviously help the younger ones coming in."Nine of the players involved in the World Cup play-off squad who lost against Italy are unavailable for this international window. As a result, O'Neill has included the uncapped Braiden Graham, Caedach O'Neill and Kieran Morrison the squad.McConville believes the friendlies are a chance for the younger players to make their mark in the senior squad. "We are a tight-knit group where you don't feel out of place to anyone, so we'll take that as an advantage," he continued. "I think we're a good group and we're still obviously quite young so the boys can fit in well. "It's a good opportunity for them. I think they'll hopefully get a run out in the games and show what they can do. They've already done that in training so far."

A garbage crisis engulfs Havana as fuel shortages stall trash pickup
A man searches through a pile of trash for items to salvage in Havana, Cuba, Monday, June 1, 2026. (AP Photo/Ramon Espinosa)2026-06-04T07:01:37Z HAVANA (AP) — On a recent afternoon in Cuba, the temperature climbed and anxiety grew among the residents of a Havana street.Their focus was an improvised dump site on the sidewalk with rotting food scraps, torn bags, cardboard and rubble. Swarms of flies and stray cats gathered around the trash whose stench wafted on the breeze from the nearby sea.“What you’re looking at is depressing,” lamented María Odalys Ramírez, a 63-year-old who lives across the street from the capital’s iconic Hermanos Ameijeiras hospital. “The trash in this area, the flies, the rats, the filth — it’s completely unsanitary.”For months, residents of Havana — home to 2 million of Cuba’s almost 10 million residents — have lived with piles of garbage accumulating on almost every street corner. The situation deteriorated after a U.S. energy blockade triggered power outages, water shortages and a fuel crisis that brought state-run garbage trucks to a standstill. Without garbage collection, residents have begun burning waste in the streets, raising alarm among health officials over potentially toxic smoke.Residents fear the coming months will bring worse conditions as summer heat intensifies and hurricane season begins. A citywide tour by The Associated Press revealed identical scenes across Havana neighborhoods where locals said garbage trucks pass only irregularly. In the city center and on the outskirts, cars, bicycles and pedestrians weave around the trash piles. Others pick through it, hoping to salvage something useful. Read More Havana as of last July was producing the equivalent of about 12 Olympic-sized swimming pools of solid waste every day, according the latest municipal figures available. Even then, municipal services collected just 57%.The “improper management of urban solid waste” has been identified as a primary environmental challenge in Cuba’s national strategy, said Odalys Goicochea, an official at the ministry of science, technology and the environment. Now, Goicochea warned, the current garbage collection situation, combined with rising temperatures and impending rains, could worsen the situation. The heat and moisture threaten to trigger a proliferation of disease-carrying flies and mosquitoes. The crisis has sparked citizen initiatives to clean up neighborhoods. One is El Batazo, an initiative operating across eight Havana blocks. A collector rings a bell twice daily to pick up pre-sorted household trash, while other project members sweep the streets.Members then sell recyclable raw materials like aluminum and glass, repurpose food scraps to feed livestock and place the remaining trash into a container for later transport to a landfill.“The fundamental impact of this project is proving to the community that it can be done,” said Evelyn Martínez, a collaborator at El Batazo. “It is entirely possible to live in a cleaner environment, give value to what we call ‘trash’ and put it to good use.”___Follow AP’s coverage of Latin America and the Caribbean at https://apnews.com/hub/latin-america

A Real Madrid presidential candidate promises the world as Manchester City fume
A Real Madrid presidential candidate promises the world as Manchester City fumePoliticians promise the world in a bid to win elections. That has been their modus operandi since the dawn of time. That statement is especially true in the case of elections for the presidency of clubs like Real Madrid. For the first time in two decades, the presidency of the 15-time UEFA Champions League winners is up for election between incumbent president Florentino Perez and the challenger Enrique Riquelme. Ahead of the election on June 7, Enrique Riquelme made some bold promises last night and angered Manchester City in the process.Enrique Riquelme has promised that Erling Haaland and Rodri will end up at Real Madrid, claims that were quickly refuted. In a bid to win the Real Madrid presidential race, challenger Enrique Riquelme has promised that Erling Haaland and Rodri will be his star signings if he beats Florentino Perez in the upcoming election. Manchester City are attempting to extend Rodri’s contract with the club and Erling Haaland is the face of the club as they enter a new era. Also, Haaland is contracted until 2034 and it highly unlikely that Haaland is leaving Manchester City anytime soon. The part of Enrique Riquelme’s declaration that angered Manchester City was when Riquelme revealed that Haaland has a release clause in his contract and will join Real Madrid if Riquelme wins the presidency from Florentino Perez. He said, while producing a Real Madrid jersey with Haaland 9 on the back: “Haaland has a release clause and wants to join Real Madrid.”Following Enrique Riquelme’s claims, Fabrizio Romano quickly relayed a statement from Haaland’s agent Rafaela Pimenta, and father Alfie Haaland that quickly refuted Riquelme’s promise. Their statement can be seen below.Manchester City are furious at Enrique Riquelme’s actions.Following on from Enrique Riquelme’s boast and promise, Manchester City have quickly countered his statement. This morning, in quotes relayed by The Athletic, City said: “The stories which have emerged from Spain regarding the future of Erling Haaland are untrue.”“There is no chance of this happening and there is no contractual clause to enable it.”“We are considering legal action for the use of our player image in this context.”Thoughts.It is no surprise to see Manchester City react angrily to Enrique Riquelme’s claims. Haaland is contracted with the club until 2034, and there has been, and is, no indication that he wants to leave City. Also, the fact that Riquelme used Haaland’s name and revealed that Haaland had a release clause is a step too far for City. Manchester City’s statement that they are considering legal action over the use of their player’s image says it all. City have also refuted the release clause talk in Haaland’s contract. That is telling in itself also for an entirely different reason. It isn’t a surprise to see bold claims being used by a candidate in the Real Madrid presidential race. That is how elections are won, whether they are held in football or any other domain. In reality, Riquelme’s claims are nothing but bluster. However, the fact he went so public with his proclamations that Haaland will sign for Real Madrid if Riquelme wins the election has caused a storm that Manchester City should not, and clearly will not, deal with. Manchester City’s statement shows they will not stand for their players being used as a propaganda tool in another club’s presidential election.Summary.In reality, Enrique Riquelme’s claims are just hot air. They are simply typical political proclamations designed to attract votes. What Riquelme didn’t factor into the equation was how angrily Manchester City would react to his claims. The Real Madrid presidential candidate may have a different issue on his hands based on City’s reaction to his claims about signing Erling Haaland and Rodri.

How Jalen Brunson’s late heroics drove the Knicks to drawing first blood in NBA Finals
The New York Knicks have drawn first blood in the NBA Finals, extending their remarkable winning streak with a dramatic comeback victory over the San Antonio Spurs in Game One.Jalen Brunson spearheaded the Knicks' charge, scoring 30 points as they overturned a 14-point second-half deficit to defeat the Spurs 105-95 on Wednesday night. Karl-Anthony Towns contributed 18 points and 12 rebounds, while OG Anunoby added 17 points for New York. The Knicks' triumph marks their 12th consecutive playoff win, a feat achieved by only seven teams in NBA history and just the third to occur within a single season. The Knicks have drawn first blood in the NBA Finals (AP)Brunson was particularly instrumental in the final quarter, netting 13 points – only six fewer than San Antonio managed as a team in that period – and sealing the win with a spinning jumper in the dying seconds.Knicks coach Mike Brown lauded his star player, stating: "He’s a gamer, man. In the biggest moments, he shows up. That’s what MVPs are supposed to do."The victory also etched the Knicks into the history books as the first team ever to beat San Antonio in an opening game of the title series, breaking the Spurs’ previous 6-0 record. This is also the first time the Spurs have trailed in a Finals series before its conclusion. The Knicks finished the game on an emphatic 11-0 run. While Golden State achieved 15 consecutive wins in their 2017 championship season and San Antonio managed 12 straight en route to their 1999 title, the Knicks now stand at 12, with their ultimate fate yet to be determined. For the Spurs, Victor Wembanyama led with 26 points and 12 rebounds in his Finals debut, though he struggled with his shooting, converting just six of 21 attempts from the field. Stephon Castle scored 17, with Julian Champagnie and Dylan Harper each adding 16.Victor Wembanyama (right) struggled with his shooting (Getty)A candid Wembanyama admitted: "I was bad tonight. It’s not more complicated than that." He later added, "I think we let that one go."The game saw the Knicks take an early 14-7 lead before the Spurs responded with a 20-13 run to go up by 10. The second quarter featured six lead changes, with San Antonio holding a 55-48 advantage at the half. The Spurs extended their lead to 14 midway through the third quarter, but the Knicks mounted a fierce comeback, ending the period on a 22-9 run to tie the game at 76. New York established an eight-point lead in the final period, only for Wembanyama to briefly put the Spurs ahead 95-94 with two free throws. However, Brunson’s crucial three-pointer on the subsequent possession secured the lead for good.Jalen Brunson was instrumental in the final quarter (Reuters)The Spurs’ long-standing record of never trailing in the Finals had seen close calls in previous years, including ties with New Jersey in 2003, Detroit in 2005, and Miami in both 2013 and 2014.Game Two is scheduled for Friday in San Antonio. Despite the early advantage, Brunson remained grounded, commenting: "We have a long way to go." The Knicks are now just three wins away from their first championship in 53 years, having seized home-court advantage from the Spurs.

The Russia-Ukraine war looms over the French Open – and tennis has no answers
For all the 128 players spanning the globe to have entered the French Open main draw this year, the women’s quarter-final line-up ended up concentrated in an incredibly small corner of eastern Europe. One Pole, one Romanian, two Ukrainians, and the remaining half of the competitors from either Russia or Belarus. Those four are represented in official branding by a blank white rectangle, a flag that does not exist and tries to blend into obscurity, but which cannot be whitewashed out of the conversation. This women’s Roland Garros has been dominated by the Russian war in Ukraine and the ever-widening chasm between players from the two nations, and between Ukrainians and Belarusians. In tennis, more so than other sports, it has been a flashpoint ever since the 2022 invasion, perhaps connected to the large numbers of players from both Russia and Ukraine – seven from each in the WTA Tour’s top 100, as of writing – and the fact that the world No 1 and undisputed best player in the world is Belarusian: Aryna Sabalenka. Perhaps some of that too is connected to the one-on-one nature of the sport, the on-court aggression, the fact that inevitably there can be only one winner and the players essentially stare each other down until one blinks. But most of it is to do with the players themselves: a cohort of Ukrainians passionately talking about the devastation in their homeland and presenting a united front – Oleksandra Oliynykova called it “absolute solidarity” – and a generation of Russians who for various reasons, mostly unspoken, stay silent. Marta Kostyuk said after reaching the semi-finals: “They are all grown-ups. They know what they’re talking about. They know what’s going on. They have phones. They have Instagram. They have news. I don’t know how you can sleep at night peacefully when you know that this is going on, and you have nothing to say about it.”Those players still with family and friends in Russia can cite the fear of government reprisals against them should they speak out. Kostyuk was unimpressed by the argument: “I know some people who have left Russia the moment the war began, who have sold all their business, who have left everything behind because they just don’t agree with what their country is doing to other people.” Ukrainian players have a longstanding policy of not shaking hands with Russian opponents (Getty)She cited Daria Kasatkina, who now represents Australia, having switched nationality in 2025 after coming out as lesbian in 2022 and who has also publicly condemned the war. “People were coming to her parents, to her parents’ apartment, and scaring them. It didn’t stop her from changing nationality, moving out. I don’t think she lives in Russia anyways, but the majority of players don’t live in Russia.“You know, there is nothing that’s stopping you if this is something you don’t believe in. Clearly, they are not thinking like this, you know? After four years, I think they’ve made it very clear whose side they are on.”Kostyuk’s first-round victory was played in the immediate aftermath of a Russian missile strike which flattened a building a mere 100 metres from her family home in Kyiv. Her all-Ukrainian semi-final against national “legend” Elina Svitolina was played hours after another deadly round of bombing across the country, with at least 18 people killed. Kostyuk, 23, broke down in tears after both matches. She said after beating Svitolina: “The biggest thing I can do is sit here and talk about it so more people can find out about it so they don’t get used to this terrible life.”Kostyuk dedicated her all-Ukrainian tie with Svitolina to he compatriots back home (Getty)Crowds and audiences of this French Open are only seeing a fragment of what these players have had to endure for the past four years. Nowhere in tennis’ traditional heartland of central and western Europe has had to live through an unending campaign of terror. It has led to an unusually politically charged last eight, and final four. Kostyuk is the first Ukrainian woman into the Roland Garros semi-finals, where she will play Russia’s Mirra Andreeva. Born in Siberia, Andreeva moved to Moscow to train before decamping to Cannes in 2022. Belarusian Sabalenka lost in the quarter-finals to Diana Shnaider, who has been heavily criticised for participating in a St Petersburg tournament organised by Russian energy giant Gazprom. From that final four the possibilities include a Russian-Ukrainian final and an all-Russian one. The former would almost certainly end with no handshake, no podium photo, and few of the usual polite remarks found in the post-match speeches. Is Roland Garros prepared for that? For a sport which has an awkward relationship with its greyed-out players, who formally represent nowhere, it is a constant reminder of how the realities of geopolitics and war intertwine with sport. Since Anastasia Myskina became the first Russian winner of a major women’s singles title 22 years ago, there has been a flurry: seven more titles going to Russia and six to Belarus. It is not an issue which is going away anytime soon. Ukraine’s Oleksandra Oliynykova heavily criticised Russia’s Diana Shnaider for participating in a tournament sponsored by Gazprom (Reuters)Many sporting governing bodies – notably in winter sports, international football and athletics – have banned Russian athletes entirely; others, particularly in the Olympic realm, have allowed them if they pass at least theoretically stringent criteria. Tennis has always been one of the outliers, allowing them to compete as neutrals. Sabalenka has won her four grand slams without a flag attached to her name. The sport’s confused governance – with the four grand slams, two tours, and the ITF – has no doubt further complicated proceedings, with no real clear stance and the insistence on shuffling this problem under the carpet meaning the various governing bodies all look weak. Wimbledon 2022 was the sole major to take an actual stance and ban Russians – although ironically it was Russian-born Elena Rybakina, representing Kazakhstan since 2018, who won – and was harshly penalised for that decision, with the ATP and WTA allocating no ranking points to the tournament and fining the AELTC and LTA combined a total of $2m. There is no way to neatly tidy away this particular problem, with the sporting issue dwarfed by the huge political, ethical, and moral storm around it. As Ukraine’s Oliynykova said starkly, when asked about the prospect of additional security in her third round loss to Shnaider, the bubble of a tennis tournament is a world away from the reality in her homeland. She said: “When I will come home, I will lay under the bombs. I mean, this war, it defines my life, because my future is in Ukraine. My father, he’s coming back to the army. My boyfriend, he’s a soldier. Everything in my life is defined by war.”That is a reality which this French Open is throwing into sharp relief – with little leadership in sight on how to deal with it.

Emile Heskey goes early with prediction of where Liverpool will finish under Iraola next season
Emile Heskey goes early with prediction of where Liverpool will finish under Iraola next seasonEmile Heskey has given an early prediction as to where Liverpool will finish in the Premier League next season, most likely with Andoni Iraola in charge.Champions a year ago, the Reds then slumped to fifth place in 2025/26 and scraped into the Champions League, declining to such an extent that it cost Arne Slot his job as head coach.DOWNLOAD THE OFFICIAL EMPIRE OF THE KOP APP FOR ALL THE LATEST & BREAKING UPDATES – STRAIGHT TO YOUR PHONE! ON APPLE & GOOGLE PLAYThe Dutchman’s impending replacement guided Bournemouth to an unprecedented sixth in that campaign, a feat which now sees him on the brink of landing the Anfield gig and being tasked with instigating a significant improvement over the next 12 months.Heskey predicts the top six for next seasonSpeaking to Hajper (via Metro), Heskey has backed Iraola to improve Liverpool’s finishing position next season, but stopped short of predicting them to win a 21st top-flight title, instead believing that the main prize will be a Manchester shootout, with champions Arsenal suffering a significant slump. The former Reds striker proclaimed: “Top four I’ll say Man City, Man United, Liverpool and Arsenal. Then Aston Villa fifth and Newcastle United in sixth.”Want more Empire of the Kop coverage? Add us as a preferred source on Google to your favourites list for news you can trustWhat would constitute success for Liverpool in 2026/27?Liverpool should always be aspiring to win major trophies – the great Bill Shankly once said: ‘If you are first you are first. If you are second you are nothing.’ – but considering the season we’ve just endured, finsihing third next term wouldn’t be a dismal failure.Obviously a lot can happen in terms of transfer activity between now and the start of the 2026/27 campaign, which will inevitably contain an abundance of twists and turns during the subsequent nine months of football. As things stand, the Reds would need to pull off several new signings throughout the squad to improve the depth of options available to Iraola, and to replace the starting XI vacancies created by the exits of Mo Salah and Ibrahima Konate.Such is the intensity of competition at the top end of the Premier League that no team has a procession to the title akin to Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich in most seasons in France and Germany, but hopefully the new head coach can at least guide Liverpool into the conversation of potential winners next term. What we can say without fear of contradiction is that Kopites will be expecting a discernible improvement on a torrid 2025/26 campaign in which we were fortunate to sneak into a Champions League berth.

Delap playing against Manchester City [Getty Images]In his first season at Chelsea, Liam Delap scored just one Premier League goal - two in 41 appearances in all competitions - and ended the campaign on a 26-game goal drought. A year ago, when the striker arrived at Stamford Bridge, he spoke about his ambition to make England's World Cup squad this summer. Clearly, it's not gone to plan. There are mitigating circumstances for the England Under-21 international, who had injuries and spent a lot of time on the bench, but his goal tally remains surprising given he scored 12 for an Ipswich Town side that was relegated the season before. Chelsea won the race and triggered Delap's £30m release clause, despite strong interest from Manchester United, Newcastle, Nottingham Forest and Everton last May.So what next? Delap remains committed and wants at least another season to prove his doubters wrong. The 23-year-old's commitment is reflected in his decision to buy a house locally, while his coaches - Enzo Maresca, Liam Rosenior and most recently Calum McFarlane - have all highlighted his work-rate behind the scenes.Delap's biggest issue has been Joao Pedro, who also arrived last summer in a £55m move from Brighton and was arguably the standout forward among those signed by major English clubs, with Manchester United, Arsenal and Newcastle also strengthening in that area.Unlike Delap, Pedro is currently part of a group of 'untouchable' players at Stamford Bridge, alongside Cole Palmer, Reece James and Moises Caicedo. This does not mean Chelsea are actively looking to sell Delap but his relatively low transfer fee would make him easier to move on. The club's failure to qualify for European competition also means fewer matches, making it harder to carry a large squad.Nicolas Jackson is also due to finish his loan spell at Bayern Munich and, with his previously frosty relationship with former manager Maresca no longer an issue, could return to the Blues despite interest from Premier League and overseas clubs.Similarly, striker Emmanuel Emegha agreed to join Chelsea on a permanent basis from partner club Strasbourg last summer, with the expectation he will integrate into the squad in 2026.It is likely to be a complex situation, with the input of new manager Xabi Alonso set to be key when he takes charge on 1 July.Where has it gone wrong for Delap? Those close to Delap accept he has not met expectations albeit under difficult circumstances. Delap scored for Chelsea in the Club World Cup, which technically counted as a goal last season, and he later highlighted his intention to push for England's World Cup squad over the course of his next season.Back then, it seemed a challenging but realistic target. Coming into this season, Delap played well in his first start during a 5-1 win away at West Ham but then tore his hamstring while sprinting for a ball in his third league appearance against Fulham. Delap was out for more than two months and the severity of the injury forced Chelsea to initially consider recalling Jackson from Bayern before opting to bring Marc Guiu back from Sunderland instead on deadline day.Either side of goals against Barcelona and Fulham, Delap suffered a dislocated shoulder in a match against Bournemouth, just a month after returning from his hamstring injury. It is understood the injury limited his ability to play in his usual style, which in turn affected his form.Maresca, his former youth coach at Manchester City, had been keen to use him in rotation with and also alongside Pedro, who can play in multiple positions. However, the Italian's decision to leave the club on New Year's Day was disruptive in several ways, including to Delap's form, as new manager Liam Rosenior made Pedro his first-choice number nine with some success.Pedro went on to score 20 goals in all competitions while Delap made just three league starts in the final four months of the season and completed 90 minutes only three times.Delap will hope for a chance to prove his critics wrong, with many also pointing out his seven yellow cards far exceeded his goal tally.Delap not the only one strugglingLiam Delap ended the Premier League season with one goal from an expected goals of 4.86 which means it is the second biggest underperformance in scoring goals in relation to the quality of chances received.Winger Alejandro Garnacho also scored just once in the Premier League after joining from Manchester United for £40m.Star forward Cole Palmer ended a 14-game goal drought for club and country on the final day of the season, while Pedro Neto contributed with assists but failed to score in his final 20 Premier League appearances of the campaign.Meanwhile, £48.5m signing Jamie Gittens, who joined from Borussia Dortmund, also scored only once in all competitions in an injury-hit season. There is uncertainty surrounding the future of large swathes of the squad. In addition, Enzo Fernandez and Marc Cucurella have both publicly criticised the club, which will not play European football next season, and been linked with moves away from west London. Fernandez is valued at £120m and is exploring his options to leave, while Atletico Madrid have shown interest in Cucurella, who has two years left on his deal, but Chelsea's stance remains unclear.Goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen wants to leave to become a starting goalkeeper. Trevoh Chalobah and Tosin Adarabioyo also face uncertain futures, with only two years remaining on their contracts, while Benoit Badiashile struggled to make matchday squads towards the end of the season and could depart. There is a desire to add experience to what was again the youngest squad in the Premier League after a disappointing campaign in which Chelsea finished 10th and without a trophy. There is also pressure to sell well to help Chelsea buy, with Uefa's settlement agreement still in place and limiting acceptable losses. The picture is uncertain for several individual players - and much will depend on newly-appointed manager Alonso and whether suitable offers arrive.Latest Chelsea news, analysis and fan viewsAsk about Chelsea - what do you want to know?

What do Posh fans think of new football club logo?
Peterborough United's new crest went live on Monday [Peterborough United FC]After 18 years since the club's last rebrand, Peterborough United launched its new identity on Monday. For the first time since the 1970s, Posh are no longer sporting the city's coat of arms. The club previously said it wanted to modernise its branding to keep up to date with platforms that simply did not exist last time round, like social media and its own streaming service. The new emblem was designed following feedback from fans, but what do people on the streets of Peterborough make of it?'I like the key in it'Bill Thatcher thinks the new logo is less cluttered than the old one [John Devine/BBC]The League One side's last crest was created in 2008 and was based on the city's coat of arms, which features cross keys and the motto "upon this rock".It was a familiar design to Peterborough United fans. According to the Posh Supporters Trust, the club's emblem has almost always featured the coat of arms, which is also used by local taxi firms and other sports clubs. Now it is a much more streamlined design, with a simplified version of a winged lion holding a key, paying homage to the city's shield.Bill Thatcher, from Eastfield, said he thought the new logo was "very good" and less cluttered than what it was replacing."I like the key in it, because there are a lot of keys around Peterborough," he said.Chris Annison, from Stanground, agreed and said it meant a lot to him the club had kept a key prominent in the design.'It doesn't ring any bells'Michelle Wilson is not a fan of the new Peterborough United crest [John Devine/BBC]Many Posh fans felt the design did not represent them or their city.Michelle Wilson, a former season ticket holder from Gunthorpe, said: "I don't like it.""It doesn't ring any bells with me," she said. "It doesn't make me think of Peterborough. Definitely not."Angela Noble, from Peterborough, said she was disappointed the new design did not showcase Posh's history, compared to the old logo which included the team's name and the year the club was founded."It doesn't mean anything," she said.Denise Thornton thinks Posh has gone "the wrong way" [John Devine/BBC]Denise Thornton, from Werrington, said she would not mind the branding being refreshed "if it looked a little bit like the old one"."But this has nothing to do with Peterborough United on it," she said, "so it's gone the wrong way."Why has the badge changed? The previous crest was based on Peterborough's coat of arms [Getty Images]Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony previously said branding was a "massive part" of the club's evolution, and he thought the new design would help Posh secure commercial deals. The new crest was designed by Christopher Payne, who spent time in the city speaking to the club, historians and fans.Peterborough United is not the only side to have rebranded. Local rivals Cambridge United launched a new logo last year, as did Norwich City in the 2022-23 season.Katie Skingle, director of branding agency Kat Marketing, said it was important for brands to move with the times."Football club logos need to have longevity," she said."I really like what Peterborough has done with the new crest. It's much cleaner and more modern while sticking to the heritage of the club's roots."Do you have a story suggestion for Peterborough? Man City consider legal action after Haaland claim
Haaland has scored 55 goals in 49 international appearances for Norway [Getty Images]Manchester City are contemplating taking legal action after a Real Madrid presidential candidate promised to sign their striker Erling Haaland.Enrique Riquelme - a renewable energy magnate who is challenging current president Florentino Perez for the position - unveiled a Real Madrid shirt bearing Haaland's name while on television on Wednesday, saying: "He has a release clause and would like to join Real Madrid. If I become president, he will play for Real Madrid."A swift denial was issued in a joint statement by Haaland's father and agent, before City rubbished the suggestion."The stories which have emerged from Spain regarding the future of Erling Haaland are untrue," the statement read. "There is no chance of this happening and there is no contractual clause to enable it."We are considering legal action for the use of our player image in this context."Enrique also pledged to sign City midfielder Rodri, adding: "He is a great player, in a position where Madrid need to strengthen."We have spoken to his agent. We have to respect his club, but if I'm president he will play for Madrid. I will do everything possible."What is happening in the Real Madrid election?Riquelme has challenged Perez in the election – the first time in 20 years Perez has not stood unopposed – following two seasons in which the club has won no major trophies. The 37-year-old has run on a campaign of vast giveaways, including a promise to build a members' city for fans of the club in the area surrounding the training base, and reducing the annual membership fee by up to 50% if the team does not win the Champions League next season. He also opposes Perez's decision to hire Jose Mourinho as the club's manager. That appointment can only be formally confirmed if Perez wins the election.Riquelme, and the team behind his campaign, has hinted that former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is their main target for the position. When asked about Klopp in an interview with The Athletic last month, Riquelme said: "Naturally, I would love for profiles of that calibre, and others like them, to coach this club."Just under 100,000 members are eligible to vote in the election, which is scheduled to take place on Sunday, 7 June. The vote was called by Perez himself, in an attempt secure a renewed mandate following a period of on-field unrest and disapproval in the stands at the Santiago Bernabeu. He is considered the overwhelming favourite to win.More to follow.

Tight finish: Ertel, Indiana All-Stars tested by Gardner Jr. and Junior All-Stars
FORTVILLE – Jason Gardner Jr. was not going to just lay down and let Luke Ertel have an easy time of it in front of the home crowd in his final game in the Mt. Vernon gym. That’s respect.“A lot of people were kind of talking about Mr. Basketball vs. future Mr. Basketball and that brought a little more energy to me,” Gardner Jr.Ertel, like usual, got the winning end of it as the IndyStar Indiana All-Stars defeated Gardner Jr. and the Indiana Junior All-Stars in a 105-100 showdown on Wednesday night. The Purdue-point Mr. Basketball finished with 20 points, 10 assists and six rebounds to lead the senior group, which will play a doubleheader on Friday in Lexington, Ky., and Saturday at Gainbridge Fieldhouse against the Kentucky All-Stars.Ertel, who had a long line of young autograph seekers waiting for him after the game, shot just 2-for-9 from the 3-point line. But his signature passing was on display all night.“His court vision is really good,” said Northridge star Brady Scholl, an Indiana Wesleyan commit who finished with 17 points and nine rebounds on 7-for-9 shooting. “I was talking to him earlier (Wednesday) and he said he played quarterback until his sophomore year. You can kind of see that because his court vision is so good. It’s really fun to play with him.”The All-Stars were without Lawrence North duo Brennan Miller and Cameron Webster, who were attending graduation. Both will play in the weekend games against Kentucky. Also out with a foot injury was Fishers’ 6-9 standout and Ball State commit Kai McGrew, who said he hopes to play against Kentucky. He suffered the injury in Tuesday’s practice.Crown Point’s Dikembe Shaw, Mr. Basketball runner-up, got off to a fast start and finished with 18 points despite batting foul trouble. Plainfield’s Noah Smith had 13 points and eight rebounds, Silver Creek’s Dane Caldwell added 10 points and Noblesville’s Baron Walker had nine points and 10 rebounds.“For the Juniors, it’s a personal game,” said Ertel, who scored a record 36 points last year when the Junior All-Stars knocked off the All-Stars 117-114. “The state of Indiana has really good players, so all of those guys are very good so it’s a tough challenge for us whether they are a year younger or not. It was good to get the ‘W’ and not have to think about it until Friday.”The Junior All-Stars, despite facing a serious size disadvantage, gave the senior group all it could handle. A big reason for that was the Fishers’ backcourt duo of Gardner Jr. and Cooper Zachary. Gardner Jr., who scored 30 points in the win over the Kentucky Junior All-Stars on Sunday, went for a game-high 21 points, eight assists and four rebounds. Zachary added 17 points, including a couple of deep 3-pointers late to keep his team in striking distance.Plainfield guard Harper Baker-Lands added 13 points and four rebounds for the Junior All-Stars and Pike 7-footer and Purdue commit Isaiah Hill had 12 points and four rebounds. South Bend Riley’s Da’Kori Parker had 13 points.“Luke plays super hard on defense and offense,” Gardner Jr. said of the matchup with Ertel. “It makes me want to play harder on defense, just knowing how good of a player he is. You can’t back off. I always want to win, of course, but it’s always fun playing against him … there are a lot of connections and friendships off the court. On the court it was super competitive but off the court we are all cool.”Indiana All-Star coach Todd Woelfle of Terre Haute North said the challenge from the Junior All-Stars was expected. The smaller lineup presented some issues that may not exist in the same way against the Kentucky team.“The juniors were able to expose us a little bit on some drive-and-kicks and get some open threes,” Woelfle said. “We’ll have to go back and watch that. But I thought everybody who got on the court got in and contributed with good attitudes and effort. If we continue that, we’re going to have success.”It was a fitting sendoff for Ertel, who had plenty of family in attendance for the game. Mt. Vernon, the Class 4A state champions, were also represented with coach Joe Bradburn assisting Woelfle and Max Vise playing for the Junior All-Stars.“The crowd was great for the girls and the boys,” Woelfle said. “I think it was special for the Mt. Vernon community. Any time you have Luke Ertel on the floor you are kind of on the edge of your seat – not only as a fan but as a coach. It’s just nice to have him on our team this time. Coach Bradburn is used to that, but the rest of us aren’t.”Call Star reporter Kyle Neddenriep at (317) 444-6649.Get IndyStar's high school coverage sent directly to your inbox with the High School Sports newsletter. I Got Access to Hundreds of Teacher Misconduct Complaints in California — and You Can Too
Anna Vignet/KQED I was a new reporter at KQED in 2021 when former elementary teacher Joseph Brian Houg was sentenced to more than three decades in prison for sexually abusing 10 students. He’d taught at the same San Francisco Bay Area school for more than two decades. Were there warning signs? I soon discovered parents on social media saying they had complained to school administrators for years about Houg. I also knew that schools could release such complaints if they were substantiated or if teachers were disciplined. So I filed public records requests with Houg’s school — something anyone can do. I received 43 pages of records within a few months showing that parents had reported Houg to the principal at least four times since 2009. They complained about him for asking students to strip down to their underwear in his classroom in order to try on costumes for a play he was directing, and for coming into their changing room. They also complained about his touching boys’ chests or stomachs and tapping one boy on the butt. I learned that the principal had twice warned Houg to stop touching students. But he was allowed to keep teaching. (The principal said in a deposition that while Houg’s actions crossed professional boundaries, they were not reported to her as sexual.) Over the next two years, I reported on similar cases of teachers remaining in the classroom after complaints of unwanted touching. Another Bay Area elementary school, in Benicia, reported a teacher to the state’s licensing body after he resigned due to accusations of misconduct. He was hired by another school, and his educator license remained in good standing until he was criminally charged. (He is currently fighting those charges.) This raised a whole different set of questions for me: Should these teachers have been allowed to keep teaching in new schools? How much about a teacher’s disciplinary history did potential employers know? And what was the state’s responsibility for acting on, and sharing, the information it had about these teachers? After I entered journalism school at the University of California, Berkeley in 2023, I wanted to investigate how common it was for teachers to continue working with kids after schools found that they had committed misconduct. California law bars the teacher licensing agency from releasing disciplinary records to the public, so my classmate and I requested records from the 300 largest school districts in California. We asked for complaints of teacher sexual misconduct made to schools in the five previous years. We also asked for any reports sent by schools to the state’s teacher licensing agency, which are required to be filed when public school educators are fired or resign due to alleged misconduct. Read More He Was Fired for Sexually Harassing Students. California Allowed Him to Keep Teaching Anyway. Dozens of districts responded within two months. We began building a spreadsheet of teachers against whom complaints were raised. Getting the records was slow: California requires public agencies to determine whether they have records to disclose within 10 days, and to release them promptly, but most dragged their feet. Whenever schools stopped responding, I copied school board members and attorneys on my emails, citing the law. By the time I graduated more than a year after filing the records requests, I had received more than 350 complaints, which I used in my recent investigation with KQED and ProPublica. To this day, Los Angeles Unified, the largest school district in California, still has not released any records pertaining to teacher misconduct cases that it reported to the state. Instead, the district said it would charge me $8,000 ($100 an hour for 80 hours of work) for it to “investigate approximately 2,500 potentially responsive personnel files.” The First Amendment Coalition, a California nonprofit that advocates for free speech and government transparency, is representing me in a lawsuit filed in May. We argue that the Los Angeles school district is violating public records laws with its failure to release documents pertaining to alleged educator misconduct. A Los Angeles Unified spokesperson told me in a written statement this week that its policies balance the public’s right to access records with “responsible stewardship of public resources” and the law. Districts slow-walking their responses isn’t the only obstacle to getting records from schools. Districts typically notify teachers before releasing complaints to give them the opportunity to block the documents’ release. The former Benicia teacher who was criminally charged with sexually abusing students in 2024 sued to block the release of complaints made against him at two school districts. The First Amendment Coalition represented me in that case, too, and we won. It took nine months to get the records. In another case in which I had requested records, the court granted an injunction preventing release of the teacher’s records, but the legal filings contained the details of the allegations against him, so the nature of the complaint became public anyway. At least four teachers have called or emailed me directly to ask why I’m requesting their disciplinary records. They wanted to share their side of the story, which I was more than happy to hear, and some argued that their cases were not worth my time. One asked me to retract my request. (I did not.) Another sent a 1,700-word email saying that the allegations were only partially true and lamented that he did not have the money to defend himself. While I appreciated the complexity of individual cases, I believed that those misconduct complaints might contain important truths. Undeterred by school districts’ recalcitrance, I followed the public record-seekers’ mantra: If you can’t get records from one agency, the answers you’re looking for may exist somewhere else. Records of state disciplinary hearings are presumed public when teachers object to their dismissals by school districts or appeal the suspension or revocation of their licenses. And those records reside in the Department of General Services, a state agency that houses another agency responsible for convening administrative hearings of public employees. This agency proved helpful with the case of Jason Agan, a San Francisco Bay Area math teacher who KQED and ProPublica reported on last month. Agan had been fired for sexually harassing high school students but went on to teach at two more schools, even after an independent panel convened by the Office of Administrative Hearings deemed him “unfit to teach.” Because he had asked for an outside hearing after the district moved to fire him, I requested those records. I got them the next day. The documents contained summaries of testimony from students, administrators and Agan himself at his dismissal hearing. Agan, who has not been accused of a crime, admitted to touching students’ shoulders but denied any sexual motivation, stating during his dismissal hearing that he did so to offer them support and encouragement. He maintained his teaching license. Getting a response from the Department of General Services was like discovering a secret portal to obtaining records quickly and easily. So I requested five years’ worth of decisions about other teachers by independent panels from this agency, in search of further insights into how the state’s teacher disciplinary system works and where it falls short. I obtained a gold mine of documents in less than a week. I had learned some important lessons: What seems to be secret isn’t always so. Sometimes you just need to know who to ask, and for what. Help Us Report on Teacher Misconduct in California If you have experience with the state’s opaque teacher disciplinary process, KQED and ProPublica want to hear from you. Share Your Experience The post I Got Access to Hundreds of Teacher Misconduct Complaints in California — and You Can Too appeared first on ProPublica.

'What is this stupid game?' Lalit Modi claims he 'begged' Sachin, Dravid to play 2007 T20 World Cup
Former IPL chairman Lalit Modi has claimed that many star Indian cricketers were unwilling to play the inaugural ICC T20 World Cup in 2007, saying he personally approached players during India's tour of England that year and urged them to take part in the tournament.India toured England from July 19 to September 8, 2007, for a three-Test and seven-ODI series, just before the inaugural ICC World Twenty20 began in South Africa on September 11. While senior players such as Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly were part of the England tour, they did not feature in India's T20 World Cup squad. The team was led by MS Dhoni and included players such as Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh, Gautam Gambhir, Dinesh Karthik, RP Singh and Irfan Pathan.Speaking to news agency ANI in an interview, Modi said many players dismissed the new format and were not interested in extending their stay for the tournament after a long tour."I went to every player in the dressing room in England when India was touring in 2007. I went and I said, 'Please, I beg you to play the T20. They said, 'Lalit, are you joking? What is this stupid game? We don't want to play it.' Everybody said that to me in the dressing room. 'Oh, we've had a long tour. We want to be with our families.' Now, today, would the public, number one, the players, number two, the administrator, number three, accept a player not playing the World Cup? There'd be uproar," he said.Modi also said the BCCI chose to send a young side to the tournament instead of its established stars. He pointed out that such a move would be difficult to imagine in the current cricket landscape."The BCCI didn't even send the main team, India team to South Africa to play the World Cup T20. They sent a second team. 'Let's not even send the India team. Let's put our new team under Mahendra Singh Dhoni.' Completely raw. Completely green. The Tendulkars, the Dravids, the Saurav Gangulys; none of them played the T20 World Cup. Would you accept that today? Today, if the Indian team is to go to the World Cup, any World Cup, would you accept a B team? Would the public accept a B team? Would the board accept a B team?" he added.According to Modi, T20 cricket initially struggled to attract attention in India because broadcasters and advertisers did not see value in the format."Nobody believed in the T20 cricket in India. If there are no eyeballs, there's no advertising dollars. There's no advertising dollars, there's no subscription. If someone is watching, then there will be money. If no one is watching, then there will be no money. Today, anything that has eyeballs is going to get the money from the advertisers," he said.Modi further claimed that the inaugural T20 World Cup did not generate significant viewership until Yuvraj Singh hit six sixes in an over against England. He said that moment helped increase interest in the tournament and played a role in changing perceptions about the format."The T20 World Cup in South Africa had no ratings till Yuvraj Singh hit the six sixes. Till that very day. I orchestrated that. It just happened. I just said anybody who makes six sixes or takes six wickets in an over, I'll give you a porsche. I was trying to make something happen when nobody was wanting to make it happen. I went around the world trying to convince people because I knew it will work," he said.

Michigan football's Rod Moore is 'feeling the best' he has in 2 years
Shortly after Michigan football's national championship in January 2024, it seemed that standout safety Rod Moore would possibly be a three-year college player and test the NFL waters.Instead, after returning for what he believed would be one final year to improve his stock, he suffered some bad injury luck. He is now a sixth-year player, and this fall he will quite possibly become a first in U-M history: a three-time captain.Moore, who joined the Wolverines in 2021, is set to play for his third coach and fourth defensive coordinator during his U-M tenure. And while his journey has been topsy-turvy, the former All-Big Ten safety is slowly but surely feeling more like his former self.“I'm feeling the best I felt since March 27, 2024, the exact day I tore my ACL, but I'm feeling great,” Moore recently said on the “In the Trenches” podcast with team color commentator Jon Jansen. “Took three surgeries, but now I'm feeling like I haven't felt the past two years. I'm moving around, running straight line back, feeling fast again, and it's just a matter of getting the coordination back under my feet."I didn't really understand this, but when you come back off of an injury like that, and go through three surgeries, your body forgets how to do certain things, and it's been times where I was frustrated, because I might be able to do this, but now it's like it just takes time to get it back under you.”Moore had surgery in the spring of 2024 and missed the entire season. Then in April 2025, after he continued to feel a nagging pain, he had another surgery on his meniscus, which he felt would be the final step toward returning to the field. While he did play in 2025, it was sparingly, appearing in just three games against Nebraska, Wisconsin and USC. He recorded an interception against the Badgers, but the wear and tear on his body from such an aggressive return took its toll, and he was sidelined the remainder of the year.PROTECTING HOME TURF: Michigan football is killing it with in-state recruitsMoore was granted an NCAA waiver for a sixth season of eligibility this past offseason, right around the same time he had a third (and what he hopes is final) surgery to clean up the scar tissue from the prior procedures. Though he didn't play in spring practice, Moore was already feeling valued by the new leaders of the defense.“[Defensive coordinator Jay Hill] called me one day out of nowhere — I think it was probably a week after he got here — and he was like, ‘I like the way you move,’” Moore said. “I’m like, ‘Dang, you’re back there watching the ‘23 film?’"He told me how he can’t wait to get me back, and to be honest, it’s probably been the first time in my college career that I’ve felt I had the support and the needs for a coach to want me healthy."Moore has played in 40 career games, recording 147 tackles, 14 pass deflections, seven interceptions and 2½ tackles for loss. Highlights including a game-sealing pick against Ohio State in 2023 to advance to the Big Ten championship game, an interception against MSU in a 2022 victory, and his 12 tackles and interception in what ended as a CFP loss to TCU in the 2022 Fiesta Bowl. The rehab continues for Moore, and after years of largely watching from the sideline, he now understands exactly what it takes to return from significant injuries and where his body has been and needs to be. As Michigan begins its summer workouts this month, Moore is expecting to participate and be ready for fall camp which begins in August.“I've got to hit [the ground] running in June,” Moore said. “I’ve got to be full go being able to participate in all the workouts, which I fully anticipate on doing. It's just staying healthy, getting healthy, and just dominating the entire summer and coming into fall camp Day 1 just going.”Tony Garcia is the Michigan beat writer for the Detroit Free Press. Can you build a team with Pistons across eras to go 82-0?
Want to mix Kelly Tripucka, a prolific scorer for the Detroit Pistons in the early 1980s, and Cade Cunningham? You can with a new simulation engine, 82-0, which evaluates statistical output of players against a full 82-game schedule. The objective: get your team to 82-0 by constructing an NBA roster from lineups as early as the 60's. The challenge: picking your players wisely, as you only have one opportunity to pick each position of your starting lineup."The game consists of five rounds — one for each roster position," reads a how -to-play section of the simulation. The online engine, developers say, ignores rankings and focuses exclusively on historical performance data from each player's peak. The simulation evaluates five core metrics including: points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks. Once you pick your star lineup, the simulation runs your lineup's stats through a win-projection curve. To get to 82-0, your roster must maximize its collective output across all five categories, meaning that regardless of how high scoring might be, you still need to construct your roster well to win it all.Players have to be aware and identify the highest raw statistical producers in each slot and keep eras in mind, as a 30-ppg average in the '60s is not equivalent to one in the 2020s, the website reads.Additionally, the simulation is divided into two categories, one with full player stats to which make picks easier, and one without, testing users' basketball IQ.Jalen Williams is a trending reporter at the Detroit Free Press. Alan Brazil ‘lucky to be alive’ after heart stopped during operation
TalkSport host Alan Brazil has revealed he is “lucky to be alive” after his heart stopped during a liver transplant. The former Scotland and Ipswich striker, 66, revealed last month that he recently underwent a “life-saving operation”. He returned to air on Thursday morning, confirming he is still on the mend but is “alive and kicking”. “I am still here. Gradually, every day improving and looking forward to getting back,” Brazil said. “It is going to be a few more weeks, but hopefully, just two or three and get back.“There has been loads of sport on that has really kept me going, and it has been a funny few months - it really has.“There is a lot of rubbish going at the moment with Kenny [Dalglish] and Kevin Keegan, John Barnes [all diagnosed with cancer] - every day you read something different.“I copped it, but thank God, luckily, the guys at Addenbrooke's Hospital have saved my life.” Brazil said he underwent the operation just hours after finishing presenting his breakfast show on TalkSport. “They transplanted my liver. My heart did stop for a bit and it came back on its own,” he said. “I’ll be frank, I’m very, very lucky to be here.” Brazil made 13 appearances for Scotland and scored 76 goals for Ipswich in a six-year spell at Portman Road between 1977 and 1983, winning the FA Cup in 1978 and Uefa Cup in 1981.

How tennis players’ dogs live at Grand Slams and on tour, from courtside seats to massages
PARIS – Melanie Gauthier Knopp’s job at the French Open has nothing to do with playing tennis. She spends her days helping the hundreds of players who have come through their gates over the past couple of weeks feel cared for.In that pursuit, she does everything from coordinating social activities to leading excursions off grounds. She gives massages to those who need it after a long day of running around and, when it was unseasonably hot in Paris last week, she even opened a private pool so they had a place to cool down.If she’s really particularly generous, Gauthier Knopp will even hand-feed certain clients their dinner. No, not players. Their dogs.Gauthier Knopp is the first dog concierge employed by Roland Garros, hired to look after the beloved pets that tennis’ top players tote around from tournament to tournament throughout the year, across borders and over seas, so the competitors can focus on performing at their peak. The dogs are usually small — better for transporting — and some have achieved such a level of renown that the sight of them heralds the arrival of their human. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Roland-Garros (@rolandgarros)If a mini dachshund, Bella, bounds down the hall, trust that French Open quarterfinalist Anna Kalinskaya isn’t far behind. Same goes for Hailey Baptiste of the U.S. dachshund, Oscar, and world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka’s recently adopted Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy, Ash – so named for Arthur Ashe, because Sabalenka had a deal with her coach that if she won the U.S. Open, she’d get a dog.“We felt like it had to be related to New York,” Sabalenka told the Tennis Channel this year. “Apple doesn’t sound right.”Little dogs have had the run of tennis events for many years. Serena Williams’ pup, Chip, was a longtime member of her entourage, and other Grand Slams have adopted policies to make them comfortable. But the sport has seen a noticeable puppy proliferation in recent years. At least half of the women’s quarterfinalists at this year’s French Open travel with their dogs on tour. World No. 3 Alexander Zverev, who won his quarterfinal against rising Spanish teenager Rafael Jódar on Tuesday, has traveled with a dog since the early years of his career. Zizou Bergs, a Belgian player who lost in the first round, is the rare midsize-dog owner who brings around his pet, Copain. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Roland-Garros (@rolandgarros)There were so many dogs at this edition of Roland Garros that the tournament installed doggie bag dispensers around the players’ lounge on site, and posted clear signage around areas where dogs are not allowed to enter. Ten canines were given their own credential badges to wear around the grounds, and while there are some areas that they are not supposed to be, such as dining areas, they get around.Dogs have been seen on practice courts, listening attentively during news conferences, and even in players’ boxes on Court Philippe-Chatrier, somehow enduring the exquisite torture of seeing their owner hit a tennis ball that is not for them over and over again. As Madison Keys, one of the dogless players on tour, said in a news conference last week after closing her eyes and taking a deep breath: “There’s just… a lot of dogs.“Dogs are great. I think dogs are a large responsibility, though. So as long as we’re doing that, then I think dogs are wonderful,” she said, laughing.“I totally see how it feels, like a little bit of normalcy and a piece of home. What are they called? Emotional support animals. I can see where that’s valid when we travel so much to have a little bit of just, like, something that we love.”Professional tennis demands a lonely, nomadic lifestyle. Players live out of suitcases traveling without friends and family for much of the year; their team members, the people physically around them most, are employees. It can be difficult to feel rooted. It’s hard to escape one’s mind after a bad match, sitting alone in a hotel room.Until the dog needs to go out.“It’s nice having her responsibilities. She’s good company, she relaxes my mind. It’s good not to think all the time about tennis,” Kalinskaya said in an interview. “Traveling with her, it relaxes me.”Dogs also dole out kisses and cuddles whether or not their player has had a good day on court.Sabalenka, who was upset Wednesday in her semifinal after another match in the French Open wind spiraled out of her control, called Ash her mental health support. Anastasia Potapova, whose mini-poodle mix Bula accompanied her in Paris as she made a run to the fourth round, said her dog makes her hotel feel like a happier place.“It’s just a bit of a different atmosphere in the room, you know?”João Fonseca, the Brazilian sensation who defeated three-time champion Novak Djokovic and two-time finalist Casper Ruud before losing his quarterfinal match to another developing talent, Jakub Menšík of the Czech Republic, on Tuesday night, is a dog lover whose family pet stays at home when he’s on the road.At 19, Fonseca is still focused on learning how to navigate the ATP Tour. Besides, if he took his dog from the rest of his family he said, his parents would be mad.“It’s just my second year, but I can see that on tour you stay very much of the time alone, or you and your team, and it’s very individual,” Fonseca said, his arms hugging an imaginary dog in front of him as he spoke. … “It’s kind of nice, you know, just to have someone just around. [A dog] is a friend, as well.”These friends require particularly involved travel planning. Different countries have different regulations regarding traveling with animals that mean players – or more often, their agents – must be read up on pet policies.Flying with one’s dog from the United States to Paris? No problem. But flying a dog from the United States to England is going to require a workaround. Most players don’t bring their dogs to Australia or to tournaments in China, Japan or Korea, with rules requiring that pets who arrive by plane quarantine for a period of time that can last months. Some tournaments don’t allow dogs on site. And then there’s the hotel of choice’s dog policy. It’s a lot to keep in mind when players are locale-hopping every other week. Sabalenka, who added Ash to her family earlier this year, thought her team had checked all those boxes in Paris. But she prefers to stay at the same accommodations year after year when she returns to tournaments, and she’s finding the digs she stayed in pre-Ash might not be suitable now that she’s a dog parent.“We stay in the city and then there is no place to walk around,” Sabalenka said in a news conference. “But so far it’s been pretty good. He’s a very smart dog, very easy, very chill, and super easy to adjust to new places.”For 19-year-old Mirra Andreeva, a semifinalist here, the hardest part of being a parent to her bernedoodle Rassy isn’t logistics, which her agent mostly handles. It’s when she has to leave him at home, as she decided to during the French Open.Rassy doesn’t respond to her voice over FaceTime yet.“I just look at her and say, ‘Hi, look at me!’” Andreeva said, waving her hands. “But she’s never reacting.”Andreeva’s opponent in the semifinals, Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk, had one dog on tour — Mander — and now she has two, with the addition of Chich.Gauthier Knopp, a dog owner herself, she believes the tournament offers the best of both worlds – players can focus on their day jobs while knowing their canine children are being pampered, not just left in a hotel room, then reunite at the end of the day.She started her concierge business in Paris, where she mostly works with other athletes and actors, before coming on board with Roland Garros. She’s only had four or five dogs at a time this year, meaning she was able to personalize care.“One of them loves to run around and smell, so we go longer in the park for him. We say they’re reading their emails when they go outside and smell the plants and smell the fountain,” Gauthier Knopp said. “We are surprised that they were not too much looking for their owner, actually. Sports dogs are good travelers.”Gauthier Knopp expects other tennis tournaments to follow Roland Garros’s lead and offer more on-site services for dogs now that so many players travel with them. The tournament has given her access to indoor play areas as well as resources – like helping her fill up an inflatable pool in the middle of a scorching afternoon last week. She’s never received an outlandish request from a player, though Gauthier Knopp said her definition of “outlandish” when it comes to dogs may be different from other people’s.“I’ve never been surprised,” she said. “But we are all crazy dog moms here.”This article originally appeared in The Athletic.Sports Business, Culture, Olympics, Tennis, Women's Tennis2026 The Athletic Media Company

'Legs and dynamism' needed - how would you revamp squad for Iraola?
[BBC][Getty Images]Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy says making a managerial change was the "best way" for the Reds to move forward but he holds concerns over whether Andoni Iraola will have the right players at his disposal to suit his high-intensity style of play.Murphy thinks fans will now approach the season with "excitement, rather than fear", with Iraola's appointment imminent. However, the former midfielder added that he wonders if Iraola's Reds "will be able to play high-intensity football every few days because that will require a certain level of fitness - which we saw with Jurgen Klopp's teams with the flying full-backs, the midfield dynamism and the work-rate of the attackers."It's difficult to see how to create that with what he's got at the moment so the summer transfer window is huge for Liverpool in that respect."The current squad lacks legs and dynamism and isn't filled with brilliant players off the ball."So, with the likes of Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson departing, who should Liverpool pursue in the transfer market to suit Iraola and add the "legs and dynamism" Murphy highlights? Essentially, how would you revamp the squad if you were in charge? Give us names.Get in touch with your views hereListen to BBC Sport's Aadam Patel on Iraola's style below and access more Liverpool audio here

'Hold on a minute, where do we bowl?': Sunrisers Hyderabad star recalls Vaibhav Sooryavanshi nightmare
NEW DELHI: If the greatest knocks of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's record-shattering IPL 2026 campaign were to be ranked, his breathtaking assault against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Eliminator would sit right at the top. With Rajasthan Royals facing a do-or-die encounter, the 15-year-old batting sensation produced one of the most destructive innings in IPL history, hammering 97 off just 29 balls to power his side past Sunrisers Hyderabad and into Qualifier 2.The Bihar-born prodigy wasn't done yet. In Qualifier 2 against Gujarat Titans, Sooryavanshi once again lit up the stage with a sensational 96. Although Rajasthan Royals eventually lost by seven wickets and fell short of a place in the final, the teenager had already cemented his place as the standout performer of the tournament.During his astonishing knock against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Sooryavanshi smashed 12 sixes, leaving players and fans alike in disbelief. Among those left stunned was Sunrisers Hyderabad all-rounder Liam Livingstone, a veteran of seven IPL seasons who admitted he had never witnessed anything quite like it."I’ve never seen anything like it. And I’ve been there; this year was my seventh IPL. And I’ve played with and against some very good players, and I’ve never seen anything like it," Livingstone said on the Stick to Cricket Podcast. The England all-rounder was particularly impressed by Sooryavanshi's ability to evolve through the course of the tournament and find answers to every challenge bowlers threw at him."He's just like the way he hits a ball, he hits a ball so clean, yeah. He never really mis-hits a ball, never really mis-hits a ball the whole time. And wherever the ball, the first time we got him out with a bouncer, first ball he hit it straight up. But then the development that he made as a player from the start of that tournament to the end was like... we were bowling bouncers and he was hitting it over third man, and then you’d bowl this side, he’d hit it there; you bowl full, he hit it there; bowl a low full toss, he’d flick it over there. And you’re like, 'Well, hold on a minute, where do we bowl?'" Livingstone added.Sooryavanshi's numbers from IPL 2026 were nothing short of extraordinary. The left-handed batter finished as the tournament's highest run-scorer, amassing 776 runs in 16 innings at a staggering strike rate of 237.30.He also rewrote the record books by smashing 72 sixes during the season, breaking the previous IPL record of 59 sixes set by West Indies great Chris Gayle. 131496985His remarkable campaign included one century and five half-centuries, earning him both the Orange Cap and the Most Valuable Player award.

2 Steelers who deserve extensions after Nick Herbig, Darnell Washington deals
The Pittsburgh Steelers signed two standouts from their 2023 NFL Draft class to huge extensions, but two more players are deserving of new contracts. While the Steelers signed edge rusher Nick Herbig to a four-year, $100 million deal and tight end Darnell Washington to a four-year, $42 million extension, cornerback Joey Porter Jr. and defensive lineman Keeanu Benton remain on their rookie deals — which are set to expire following the 2026 season.Porter, who was selected by the Steelers with the 33rd overall pick in the second round, quickly emerged as a premier lockdown cornerback in the NFL, allowing just one touchdown since entering the league.Benton, selected by the Steelers with the 49th overall pick in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft, put together a breakout season in 2025, recording 5.5 sacks, 51 combined tackles, one forced fumble, six tackles for loss, and 12 quarterback hits. While Porter and Benton hopefully figure to be fixtures of Pittsburgh's defense for years to come, another player from the Steelers' 2023 draft class — first-round offensive tackle Broderick Jones — is dealing with a major injury and faces an uncertain future in the Steel City. For up-to-date Steelers coverage, including any offseason moves, follow us on X @TheSteelersWire and give our Facebook page a like. This article originally appeared on Steelers Wire: Steelers need to sign Keeanu Benton, Joey Porter Jr. to new deals

Alex Pereira predicts exact size for UFC heavyweight debut at White House: ‘Not too heavy’
Alex Pereira has said he expects to weight around 242lb when he makes his heavyweight debut, as the Brazilian prepares to fight Ciryl Gane at the White House. On 14 June, the UFC will stage an unprecedented event on the South Lawn, with seven fights set to play out as a celebration of 250 years of the United States. In the main event, Ilia Topuria will defend his lightweight title against interim champion Justin Gaethje, while the co-main event pits Pereira against Gane.Alex Pereira at the Oval Office in a meeting with Donald Trump (Getty)The interim heavyweight belt will be up for grabs in their bout, as Pereira aims to become the first three-weight champion in UFC history, following his reigns at middleweight and light-heavyweight. Meanwhile, France’s Gane is trying to become a two-time interim heavyweight champion.Pereira, discussing his move up to heavyweight, told Paramount: “Well, I think the right moment is now. At certain points before, but I don’t really remember when, we could have moved up to heavyweight, but it would have felt a bit forced. Not now. “Now it’s happening very naturally, in a perfect fight. This fight was supposed to happen earlier, at the first event of the year, but for a few reasons it didn’t happen. And now this has become a big moment.”Such is Pereira’s physical stature that his 2023 move to light-heavyweight (205lb) felt inevitable; it is remarkable that he ever fought at middleweight (185lb), given his size. Opening up on his new phase at heavyweight, the 38-year-old said he expects to be around 242lb against Gane. “Not too heavy. I was heavier before, though,” he said. “I got up to [258lb] and then I gradually started cutting back down.”Pereira also suggested he once cut from 242lb to 205lb for a light-heavyweight fight, saying: “Now doing the math is difficult.”He added of his new heavyweight venture: “It helps me a lot, because of my diet. I don’t have that concern anymore. When I was a middleweight, it was much more complicated. Pereira stopped Magomed Ankalaev in short order in their October rematch (Getty)“About a month before the fight, I had to cut back heavily on food, maybe even feel a bit weaker. The weight cut was pretty aggressive. Now I don’t have that concern anymore and, for me, that’s very important.”Pereira last fought in October, knocking out Magomed Ankalaev in 80 seconds to regain the light-heavyweight title. The Brazilian had lost it to Ankalaev in a points defeat last March, as his impressive first reign at 205lb came to an end. Pereira voluntarily ended his second reign in February, giving up the belt.“Poatan” had initially become light-heavyweight champion by knocking out former title holder Jiri Prochazka in 2023, and he stopped Prochazka again in 2024, as well as knocking out Khalil Rountree Jr and ex-champ Jamahal Hill in further title defences. Previously, Pereira made a swift run to the middleweight belt after debuting in the UFC in 2021; within 12 months he had become champion, stopping old kickboxing rival Israel Adesanya to win gold. However, Adesanya knocked out Pereira in their 2023 rematch, marking the end of the Brazilian’s time at 185lb.Left to right: Pereira, Ilia Topuria, Donald Trump, Justin Gaethje and Ciryl Gane (Getty)Gane, 36, last competed in October, fighting heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall to a no-contest. Gane committed multiple eye pokes, leaving Aspinall unable to finish the first round. It was Gane’s third undisputed-title fight, following a loss to Francis Ngannou in 2022 and a defeat by Jon Jones in 2023. Aspinall has since undergone double eye surgery and is expected to return to the cage later this year, against the winner of Pereira vs Gane.

Vols insider delivers harsh truth on Tennessee's Chaz Coleman future on Rocky Top amid saga
Vols insider delivers harsh truth on Tennessee's Chaz Coleman future on Rocky Top amid saga originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Tennessee Volunteers football team is once again dealing with an off-field issue involving a player during the summer. This marks the second consecutive season something like this has happened, although Coleman’s situation appears to be more mental in nature.Coleman has been going through a difficult stretch, as he did not participate much for Tennessee during the spring. He recently had to delete his Instagram account due to the negativity he was receiving over a post.“Tennessee EDGE Chaz Coleman has deleted his Instagram amid a post from earlier this month going viral online. The Penn State transfer has yet to arrive in Knoxville for voluntary workouts, and continues to be one of the most confusing storylines of the offseason,” Fox Sports Knoxville’s William Patteson posted. This is simply not ideal for Tennessee or Coleman. He is now in a situation similar to Nico Iamaleava and Boo Carter. The only problem for Coleman is that there is no transfer portal window for him to easily exit.“That has the Coleman situation feeling all-too-familiar as Coleman could become Nico 2.0. The biggest difference between now and then is there's no spring transfer window this year so Coleman actually has no way out, no matter how much he apparently regrets not going to his home state Ohio State,” All For Tennessee’s Dekota Gregory wrote. The only way for Coleman to leave the program would be through dismissal. Vols insider Austin Price believes that could be a possibility in the near future.“It does not feel like he'll be a part of this program come August,” Price said. This is not good for the Vols, especially Jim Knowles, who was counting on Coleman to be a leader on the defense. However, some situations are simply out of anyone’s control, and in this case, Coleman appears to be dealing with personal challenges.Tennessee will now have to adjust its defensive line rotation, but it will move forward. Coleman was a very exciting addition for the program, but it appears things may not pan out as expected.
