SPORTS.YAHOO.COMGarcía hits 1st grand slam for his 2nd HR of game in Nationals' 14-1 romp over DiamondbacksPHOENIX (AP) — Luis García Jr. hit his first career grand slam for his second homer of the game in the Washington Nationals' 14-1 romp over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday night.James Wood, Daylen Lile and C.J. Abrams also homered and Foster Griffin (7-2) allowed just two hits over five innings for Washington. The Nationals, who moved back to .500 at 32-32, immediately jumped on Merrill Kelly (5-4). Wood walked to start the game and García followed with a home run into the Nationals’ bullpen down the right-field line.García, who rarely faces a left-handed pitcher, stayed in against lefty reliever Philip Abner with the bases loaded in the sixth. He hit his seventh homer of the season to center field to make it 11-1.The only damage Arizona did to Griffin came when backup catcher Aramis Garcia homered in the third inning.Kelly lasted five innings, giving up six hits and seven runs. With the score 12-1 in the eighth, Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo brought in position player Adrian Del Castillo to pitch. He hit Dylan Crews with his first pitch to force in a run, but retired the next two batters to end the inning. He gave up a run in the ninth on four singles.LuJames Groover was 0 for 4 in his MLB debut, batting fifth and playing first base for the Diamondbacks. Groover, 24, selected from Reno on Friday, hit .322 with three homers for Arizona’s Triple-A affiliate this season. Ildemaro Vargas was not in the Arizona lineup Friday but entered in the eighth inning at second base — and was hit by a pitch in the leg but stayed in. Vargas and the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Max Muncy collided in Thursday night’s game and both left that game.Up nextWashington RHP Zack Littell (5-4, 5.01 ERA) was set to oppose Arizona LHP Eduardo Rodriguez (5-1, 2.24) on Saturday.___AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/mlb0 Comments 0 Shares 44 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMTeams to overcome 2-0 in NBA Finals: Spurs find themselves in historic hole after Game 2 loss to KnicksTeams to overcome 2-0 in NBA Finals: Spurs find themselves in historic hole after Game 2 loss to Knicks originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.Things could be going a lot better for the San Antonio Spurs in the 2026 NBA Finals. After two games of what was anticipated to be a back-and-forth series between two deep, elite teams, Mitch Johnson's younger squad has been outclassed in both of its home games to open the series. In Game 1, Jalen Brunson silenced the Spurs in the fourth quarter, while Karl-Anthony Towns looks like an early Finals MVP favorite with his all-around play — and while Victor Wembanyama's individual numbers look strong, he hasn't quite done enough to get a Finals win yet. Now, staring at a 2-0 series deficit as the series moves to Madison Square Garden, history certainly is not on the Spurs' side. Here's a look at the history of 2-0 series deficits as the Spurs move past a tough Game 2 loss on Friday night.NBA FINALS HQ:Live NBA scores | NBA playoff schedule | NBA playoff bracketTeams to overcome 2-0 in NBA FinalsPer Land Of Basketball, the 2026 Spurs now become the 38th instance of a team trailing 2-0 in an NBA Finals series. Of the previous 37, only five teams have come back to win the series. The following squads completed 0-2 comebacks in the Finals:1969 Celtics (vs. Lakers)1977 Trail Blazers (vs. 76ers)2006 Heat (vs. Mavericks)2016 Cavaliers (vs. Warriors)2021 Bucks (vs. Suns)Most recently, Giannis Antetokounmpo led the Bucks back to claim the 2021 title after Phoenix took a 2-0 series advantage. LeBron James did the same, leading the Cavaliers back from both 2-0 and 3-1 series deficits in 2016.Now, Wembanyama will have the daunting task of completing that comeback if he's to win his first title.MORE: How Karl-Anthony Towns continued standout playoffs in Finals Game 2Teams to go down 2-0 at home in NBA FinalsThings only get worse for the Spurs when considering the fact that they played Games 1 and 2 of the series vs. New York in front of their home fans, but still lost both. That has only happened twice before in NBA history, and neither of the trailing teams could overcome their deficit on the road.In the 1993 NBA Finals, the Chicago Bulls took the first two games of the series against the Suns in Phoenix. And while the Suns did go on to win Game 3 in Chicago, then take another road matchup in Game 5, Michael Jordan's 33 points in Game 6 closed out the series.More recently, the 1995 Orlando Magic put up far less of a fight after losing two home games to open the Finals vs. Houston. Hakeem Olajuwon led the Rockets to two road wins vs. a young Shaquille O'Neal, and Houston then proceeded to sweep the series, winning Game 4 in front of its home fans.If the Spurs can make a 2-0 series comeback against the Knicks, they would be the first team in NBA history to lose two home games to open the Finals, but still win it all.The Spurs become the third team in NBA Finals history to fall down 2-0 while being the home team. The previous two teams ended up losing the series. pic.twitter.com/CzkgzoCUdG— The Sporting News (@sportingnews) June 6, 2026Spurs vs. Knicks series stats comparisonAll things told, it's been a close series so far between New York and San Antonio — but the Knicks' group of veterans has showed in a few key areas. In Game 1, Brunson was the big difference in a game where neither offense had much to work with. The Knicks' star point guard buried some clutch buckets in the fourth quarter, and the Spurs had no answers as Wembanyama had a bad shooting night.Things were a bit closer in Game 2 on Friday night — San Antonio got out to a good start, but after the Knicks answered by holding a double-digit advantage into the fourth quarter, it appeared to be over with. However, the Spurs had one last run left in them, managed to take the lead for a moment, then lost hold of the game due to a Wembanyama turnover and the star center's missed potential game-winner.Through two games, the numbers show that the Knicks have been better at creating turnovers, moving the ball around, shooting from deep and taking care of the basketball. Here's a look at the stat comparison through two NBA Finals games:KnicksStatSpurs210Points19993 (20)Rebounds (Offensive)96 (19)49Assists3819Steals1110Blocks1146Fouls4324Turnovers2976-183 (41.5%)FG69-167 (41.3%)26-74 (35.1%)3PT22-72 (30.6%)MORE: Where Knicks winning streak ranks in NBA history2026 NBA Finals scheduleNew York leads series 2-0DateGameTime (ET)WatchJune 3Game 1: Knicks 105, Spurs 95——June 5Game 2: Knicks 105, Spurs 104——June 8Game 3 at Knicks8:30 p.m.ABC, ESPN app, fubo, DIRECTVJune 10Game 4 at Knicks8:30 p.m.ABC, ESPN app, fubo, DIRECTVJune 13Game 5* at Spurs8:30 p.m.ABC, ESPN app, fubo, DIRECTVJune 16Game 6* at Knicks8:30 p.m.ABC, ESPN app, fubo, DIRECTVJune 19Game 7* at Spurs8:30 p.m.ABC, ESPN app, fubo, DIRECTV* If necessary0 Comments 0 Shares 44 Views 0 Reviews

Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.Karl-Anthony Towns might just be playing the best basketball of his career on the biggest stage of his career. While the New York Knicks' big man has long held a reputation as an elite scorer, going from No. 1 pick to six-time All-Star and arguably the best long-range shooting center ever, Towns' lack of impact in other areas has previously been a mark against him. But as the Knicks have rolled to a 2-0 Finals advantage, Towns has been evolving in the playoffs, including in a tough matchup against Victor Wembanyama.Friday's Game 2 on the road in San Antonio was no different — Towns continued to make his impact felt all over the Finals matchup, from his 3-point shooting to his defense vs. Wembanyama. Should New York go on to win it all, he's building a potential Finals MVP case. Here's a look at Towns' Game 2 performance and how he's impressed to open the 2026 NBA Finals.NBA FINALS HQ:Live NBA scores | NBA playoff schedule | NBA playoff bracketKarl-Anthony Towns stats todayPoints: 21Rebounds: 13Assists: 4Steals: 1Blocks: 1FG: 8-123PT: 3-5FT: 2-2Thanks to Towns' all-around impact, the Knicks fought through an early deficit to take a four-point lead into halftime, then hold on in the closing minutes to take a 2-0 lead on the road. But throughout his career, he's never had a reputation as an elite defender at center. He's been shifting that narrative lately, especially over his last two games.Heading into the series, there were questions about who Mike Brown would give the Wembanyama assignment defensively; OG Anunoby appeared to be a leading candidate. Instead, Brown stuck with his center, with Towns lining up against Wembanyama on most possessions.Surprisingly, it's been an effective strategy. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMVictor Wembanyama reveals he is lacking in poise after late Game 2 blundersVictor Wembanyama reveals he is lacking in poise after late Game 2 blunders originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. For any third-year NBA player in his first-ever NBA Finals, it is hard to live up to expectations. A player like Victor Wembanyama is a special case because he has shattered all kinds of expectations for a young superstar like him.Despite all the big moments he has had, there are clear signs that he is also struggling with inexperience in the NBA Finals. That was apparent during the dying embers of Game 2, where he committed a silly turnover when the San Antonio Spurs had a clear chance of getting the win.Victor Wembanyama admits he needs to be more poised moving forwardDespite all the young Spurs players denying it, experience does matter in the NBA Finals. It has been made clear by this series against the New York Knicks that both Wembanyama and Stephon Castle continue to make silly mistakes. They combined to make that costly turnover at the end, while De'Aaron Fox was screaming for the ball in the background. Of course, this kind of moment is a huge lesson for Wembanyama, as he is taking it to heart.MORE: How a bad pass led to the Spurs' loss in Game 2 vs the KnicksWembanyama is the type of player to make mistakes and immediately learn from them. Unfortunately, now is not the time to do that because they are headed to New York City with a 2-0 disadvantage. Wemby blames himself for the loss, and he has vowed to be much better."I'm still very blurry, and that's the whole problem, you know. I need to have more poise, more control over the game," Wembanyama said when recalling the mistakes he made late in Game 2."I threw that one away. I messed up. We didn't play great as a team. We needed to win that game. This game was ours, but at this point it's done. Am I going to regret it? Yes, of course. Am I going to use that to fuel me and to fuel us next game? Absolutely."It has been difficult for such a young superstar to be at this stage. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMA comeback to savor, a finish to forget. Wemby and the Spurs let Game 2 of the NBA Finals get awaySAN ANTONIO (AP) — Victor Wembanyama described himself in a rather unusual way when Game 2 of the NBA Finals was over on Friday night.“Very blurry,” Wembanyama said. The San Antonio Spurs' situation, though, is very clear. They're in trouble. Big trouble. And Wembanyama pointed the finger of blame squarely at himself. The Spurs had an epic comeback and an epic disaster in the same fourth quarter, falling to the New York Knicks 105-104 — after a finish that Wembanyama likely won't be able to forget anytime soon. The Spurs were down by 14 midway through the final quarter, went on a 14-0 run to tie the game, then briefly took the lead when Wembanyama had a three-point play with just under a minute left. The score was tied with about 14 seconds remaining and it was best vs. best, the Knicks' Jalen Brunson against the unanimous Defensive Player of the Year in Wembanyama.Brunson wanted to take a jumper from about 16 feet. The 7-foot-4 Wembanyama got an arm up, causing the Knicks' guard to put a little too much on the shot just to get it over the Frenchman's sky-high hand. It hit the back of the rim. Wembanyama got the rebound. The arena was buzzing. He saw Spurs teammate Stephon Castle and sent a pass his way. Problem was, Castle wasn't looking and it bounced off him. Brunson wound up with the ball and Wembanyama fouled him.“I need to have more poise,” Wembanyama said. “More control over the game.”Said Castle: “I was looking at him when he first got the rebound. I just started to take off to try to give him some space to dribble up the court. I didn’t see him throw it to me.”It was a bad play. It wasn't fatal. Brunson missed one of the two free throws and the Knicks led by one. The Spurs called time. The last play was a pick-and-roll, De'Aaron Fox finding Wembanyama for a jumper from basically the same spot on the Spurs' end of the floor as Brunson tried at the other end moments earlier.“He's made that shot a thousand times,” Castle said. “He has a game-winner with that shot this year. Yeah, I’ll take that shot every day.”But it missed.Game over. The Knicks stormed the floor in celebration. Wembanyama headed to the opposite tunnel, wondering how it went so wrong.“I threw that one away. I messed up,” Wembanyama said. “We didn’t play great as a team. We needed to win that game. This game was ours. But at this point, it’s done. Am I going to regret it? Yes, of course. Am I going to use that to fuel me and to fuel us next game? Absolutely.”They'll need all the fuel they can get right now. The Spurs trail 2-0 and will fly Saturday to New York for Game 3 on Monday and Game 4 on Wednesday. They need to win one of those to keep the season alive, and they'll have to win twice at Madison Square Garden before this series ends if they're going to win the title.History says that won't happen. The Spurs jumped out to a quick lead and even resorted to the Hack-a-Mitch strategy — intentionally fouling the Knicks’ Mitchell Robinson, who was the worst free throw shooter in the NBA (among those with at least 100 tries) in the regular season and has been even worse in the playoffs — in the first quarter, looking to disrupt New York’s offensive rhythm. And even that didn’t really work. Robinson had missed nine of his last 10 free throws entering Friday; he went 3 for 6 from the line in the Hack-a-Mitch portion of the first half, which probably felt like bonus points for New York. Those three points came in handy at the end of the night. And Robinson was the one who got a hand near Wembanyama on the Spurs' star's final shot, a neat twist in the eyes of Knicks coach Mike Brown.“It started with Mitch and it ended with the other four guys boxing out,” Brown said. “So just a heck of a job by Mitch guarding the most iconic player in the world."Wembanyama is the leading scorer in these finals, but he hasn’t been dominant. He’s averaging 27.5 points, though shooting only 41%. From 3-point range, he’s 4 for 15, or 27%. And he does have seven blocks, but the Knicks haven’t been afraid to go right at him, either. He had a very slow first half Friday night, taking only four shots in the opening two quarters. That won't be enough Monday. The Spurs' best player needs to be the best player on the floor if San Antonio is going to get back into this series. There's nothing blurry about that. “We don’t feel like we played well or up to our standard at least in the last two games,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “New York has played very well and they’re a part of that. But we’re going to go into Game 3 (and) if we play our brand of basketball up to our standard, we’ll be just fine.”___AP NBA: https://apnews.com/hub/NBA0 Comments 0 Shares 44 Views 0 Reviews

It was a must-win game for the Spurs, who fell behind in the series 0-2. They will now look to make history as the first team with home-court advantage to ever come back from that deficit in the Finals. For the Knicks, the win was their 13th in a row. He had a chance to play the hero, but a costly turnover and a missed game-winning jumper ruined the storybook finish to the night for him.Instead, the MVP of Game 2 was Towns, who put up 21 points on only 12 shots. The Knicks big man did fall into bad habits with his foul trouble, picking up his fourth with six minutes left in the third quarter and going to the bench early. He picked up his fifth with under a minute left, fouling Wembanyama on an and-one to give the Spurs a temporary 104-102 lead.Despite those issues, Towns was brilliant once again in Game 2. As in Game 1, he credited his deceased mother for his incredible play, noting in his postgame interview that he took his play as a sign that she was with him for the game. MORE: How Karl-Anthony Towns continued standout playoffs in Finals Game 2The Spurs still aren't playing Dylan Harper enoughOne of my main takeaways from Game 1 was that Harper had been one of their best players, and he needed to play a lot more. Harper continued to be a wildly impressive driver and played good defense when he was on the floor. He did get an uptick from Game 1, logging 32 minutes and scoring 15 points during that span. That number must continue to climb, particularly given Stephon Castle's struggles in the game. The moment looked too big for Stephon Castle Some people have blamed Castle for the turnover that swung the game, where Wembanyama threw the ball into his back when he wasn't looking. WEMBANYAMA THROWS IT AWAY NOOOO pic.twitter.com/KOrD8AWftk— Legion Hoops (@LegionHoops) June 6, 2026MORE: How Victor Wembanyama pass off Stephon Castle's back led to disastrous Game 2 loss for Spurs vs. KnicksThat may have been more on Wembanyama than on him. And it wasn't his worst play of the night. More than his 5-of-14 shooting, his four turnovers hurt the Spurs. He made bad decisions all night, forcing bad shots and committing silly fouls when the Spurs had the Knicks contained.Castle hyperextended his knee late in the game and tried to gut it out, checking in for the last 30 seconds of the fourth quarter. But his trip to the bench in the middle of the fourth also coincided with the Spurs cutting into a double-digit deficit and getting back into the game via a 14-0 run.Castle has been an important player for the Spurs and is in theory a great defender on Jalen Brunson. He did have a great move to blow right past Brunson for a layup. But he has to be a more consistent scoring threat in order for San Antonio to put up a better fight. He's been a weak point through the first two games.Victor Wembanyama was good, but not good enoughWembanyama was quiet in the first half, shooting just four shots and scoring nine points. It led to some harsh criticism on the halftime show where Charles Barkley and Kenny Smith suggested that he was in shock at how big the moment was. MORE: Why 'Inside the NBA' crew blasted Victor Wembanyama at halftime of Game 2The Knicks have been physical with Wembanyama, tagging him aggressively in order to prevent him from getting deep catches inside the paint and disrupting the timing of his rolls to the basket. He figured out how to overcome that strategy starting early in the third quarter, when the Spurs made an effort to get him the ball more often. He started the quarter by hitting a fadeaway jumper and got going after that with eight more field goals, scoring on dunks, tip-ins, pull-up's, and 3's. Wembanyama couldn't continue that hot shooting inside of the last 30 seconds. He missed his final two midrange jumpers, and his gaffe on the pass to Castle put San Antonio in a situation that they couldn't recover from. He looked like he was forcing the issue throughout Game 1. That happened again at the end of Game 2. "I'm still very blurry, and that's the whole problem," Wembanyama said about those plays. "I need to have more poise, more control over the game."The rule about young teams being incapable of winning in the playoffs didn't seem to apply to Wemby until he met an opponent with the utmost poise down the stretch. He hasn't been able to match Jalen Brunson in crunch time. MORE: Where Knicks playoff winning streak ranks in NBA historyJalen Brunson continued to be a calming presence down the stretchBrunson hasn't shot it well this series. He has been visibly bothered by Wembanyama's rim protection. But there's nobody better in the league inside of the last few minutes.Brunson hit one of the shots of the game, nailing a fadeaway jumper with 39 seconds left over Julian Champagnie. It was from almost the same spot as his huge jumper in Game 1. Jalen Brunson hits the fadeaway jumper to tie the game with 39.3 seconds remaining in regulation (with a replay)WHAT A GAME pic.twitter.com/4PHuOOnKmk— MrBuckBuck (@MrBuckBuckNBA) June 6, 2026Brunson also intercepted Wemby's errant pass with 10 seconds left and split a pair of free throws, giving the Knicks a one-point lead that they held onto in order to win the game. Brunson's stat line of 20 points on 7-of-25 shooting wasn't great. But the Spurs were using an aggressive coverage on him, opting to throw a lot of double-teams against him. That ended up burning them several times, as Brunson made the right pass to set up teammates for easy looks. He still opened up a lot of the team's offense even without hitting a ton of shots. Brunson also wasn't targeted nearly enough by the Spurs on defense. That's an adjustment that San Antonio has to make in Game 3.0 Comments 0 Shares 44 Views 0 Reviews

Rick has seen every version of his son’s climb, so any extra contact or post-whistle tension was never going to pass quietly.Fox has brought speed, pressure, and edge to the Spurs throughout the series, and those traits naturally create friction against Brunson’s controlled, physical style. SPORTS.YAHOO.COM'Shubman Gill will not come back': Ex-India batter makes big T20I captaincy claimFormer India batter Mohammad Kaif has strongly backed Shreyas Iyer as the ideal candidate to take over India's T20I captaincy if the team management decides to move on from Suryakumar Yadav.India are likely to hand the T20I captaincy to Shreyas ahead of the upcoming series in Ireland and England. While no official announcement has been made, Kaif believes the Punjab Kings skipper is the leading candidate for the role.Speaking on his YouTube channel, Kaif highlighted Iyer's leadership credentials, pointing to his successful association with head coach Gautam Gambhir during Kolkata Knight Riders' IPL 2024 title-winning campaign. He also referenced Iyer's ability to guide multiple franchises deep into tournaments."Gautam has worked before with Shreyas and won the trophy for KKR. Shreyas got Delhi and Punjab to the final. In terms of experience, Shreyas has led in the IPL, won the trophy and understands Gautam's pattern."Kaif went on to suggest that Iyer stands comfortably ahead of the other contenders because of his proven record as both a captain and batter."In terms of that mutual understanding, Shreyas seems to be the frontrunner. He is miles ahead of the other contenders. He has even scored runs while being captain. You will find very few players who are captains and also score. There is no choice better than him," he said.Iyer's stock has risen significantly over the last two IPL seasons. After playing a key role in Kolkata Knight Riders' title-winning campaign, he followed it up by leading Punjab Kings to the IPL 2025 final while continuing to contribute heavily with the bat.Kaif acknowledged that replacing a captain who has already delivered a World Cup title can be a controversial move. However, he felt that if the selectors have already decided to head in a different direction, appointing Iyer would be a logical step."When you are removing a World Cup-winning captain, there can be no bigger chaos than that. When all these calls have been taken, this is not a big call," he stated. While backing Iyer, Kaif also reserved special praise for Jasprit Bumrah, saying the fast bowler would be his first choice if fitness and availability were not concerns."Jasprit Bumrah is deserving if you look at it. He has been in Surya's team, he has played for long and delivered. If he is ready for captaincy, he should be the first above all other names. He captained MI as well, and they won that game. He even gave a statement, which shows that he has that desire to captain. I don't know about his fitness and participation, but in that sense, no one should even be close to him, because he has been in the team and done well in different conditions," he said.Kaif also weighed in on other names that have been discussed in leadership conversations. According to him, the management appears to have moved beyond Hardik Pandya and Shubman Gill in the T20I captaincy race."They have gone beyond Pandya. At one point, I myself had asked why he was not being made captain. Gill will not come back, as he was tried and he also did not score, so they have gone past him too. I am saying myself now that Hardik should not even be a franchise captain. Maybe he can be a better captain outside MI, maybe. If he wants to stay in MI, do not be the captain," Mohammad Kaif expressed. With speculation continuing around India's next T20I captain, Kaif's verdict was unequivocal: among the available options, Shreyas Iyer remains the strongest candidate to lead the side into its next phase.0 Comments 0 Shares 44 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWhy Ole Miss' Brayden Randle played OF in super regional for first time since he was 14AUBURN, AL — Ole Miss baseball junior Brayden Randle technically had some experience in the outfield when he trotted out to right field to start against Auburn on June 5.It just came from a game with far less stakes than Game 1 of an NCAA Tournament super regional against Auburn."There was about four people who asked me," Randle said about the last time he played outfield. "I told them 14U. Summer ball."Randle, who is an infielder, has only started four of the last eight games for the Rebels. But he was instrumental in the 6-4 win at Plainsman Park that got Ole Miss (40-21) one victory away from the College World Series. The Rebels face Auburn (42-21) on June 6 (4 p.m., ESPN) in Game 2.And was he any good as an outfielder in 14U?"I did hose (throw out) a runner in my last game," Randle said with a laugh. Why did Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco start Randle in the outfield? First and foremost, Bianco wanted Randle's bat (.252) in the lineup. The other options Ole Miss has tried of late haven't been great. Brett Mosley is hitting .212, Daniel Pacella .152 and Cannon Goldin .200.Randle usually plays DH, but Bianco said he wanted to give Collin Reuter, who has less positional versatility, the start there. Getting Randle and Reuter in the lineup paid off handsomely.Bianco said Randle threw "the first couple punches" in the game. He was 2-for-3 with a walk and two RBIs. Reuter hit a two-run home run in the sixth.Bianco switched Randle with left fielder Tristan Bissetta in the second inning so he wouldn't have to deal with the sun as much, and Randle handled the only fly ball hit his way.Randle said most Ole Miss infielders take some fly balls during practice, and he jumped at the opportunity."For some reason, all the infielders in our last round of BP will go out and take fly balls," Randle said. "I just caught the balls. I guess they (coaches) noticed that and they put me out there one day for practice. Kept doing it, kept doing it and I've started to feel comfortable out there."Randle has shined in big moments this season. He hit the walk-off single on May 29 to beat Arizona State in the Lincoln Regional."I'm proud of him because in the biggest moments, I don't know if he sees it, but we see it," Bianco said. "The pulses slow. He wants those big moments. There's certain guys that won't pull the trigger. Certain guys that are different in those moments. He's almost better in those moments."Sam Hutchens covers Ole Miss for the Clarion Ledger. The Swedish coach had joined under Erik ten Hag, but was ultimately sidelined by Ruben Amorim before his departure last summer. He subsequently joined Tottenham Hotspur under Thomas Frank, but that stint did not go according to plan and he was sacked alongside Frank.Carrick has thoughts of his own, with the report claiming former Middlesbrough coach Aaron Danks is one name he is pushing for.Carrick pushing for former colleagueINEOS do not want to disturb the current balance by bringing in a new face without proper consultation, which explains why they are adopting a wait-and-watch policy for now.“United secured all of Michael Carrick’s coaching staff on new two-year deals when the 44-year-old penned his own contract extension and club sources are delighted with the impact they have made.“But one more addition is considered likely ahead of a much more intense schedule next season, and it’s likely to be someone with a set-piece speciality. A return for Andreas Georgson is one possibility, with the Dane leaving Tottenham when Thomas Frank was sacked.“United officials are aware of how tight-knit the coaching staff have become under Carrick, however, and there is a desire to get the appointment right to complement that group, rather than risk upsetting the balance. No decision is likely to be made just yet.INEOS or Carrick’s choice, only time will tell“One coach Carrick does know well is Aaron Danks. The 42-year-old Brummie was on his coaching staff at Middlesbrough and became more common to a worldwide audience while patrolling the touchline during Bayern Munich’s 5-4 Champions League semi-final first leg defeat to PSG, when Vincent Kompany was suspended.”Who ends up arriving remains to be seen, but Michael Carrick will need all the help he can get with the 20-time English league champions set to compete on four fronts in the next campaign.Feature image Michael Regan via Getty Imagesonline pollsThe Peoples Person has been one of the world’s leading Man United news sites for over a decade. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMD-backs get blown out in all phases in loss to NationalsJun 5, 2026; Phoenix, Arizona, USA; Washington Nationals first baseman Luis García Jr. (2) celebrates with right fielder Dylan Crews (3) during the sixth inning at Chase Field against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Mandatory Credit: Arianna Grainey-Imagn Images | Arianna Grainey-Imagn Images Game SummaryThe Diamondbacks were coming off a draining victory the night before against their arch rivals and, possibly as a result of that, they just didn’t seem to have any life on either side of the ball on what was apparently Pride Night at Chase Field. Merrill Kelly had his worst start in over a month and the hitters couldn’t find any open grass against the surprisingly stiff Nats defense. The game seemed to get off to a weird start when we were delayed because Merrill Kelly just wasn’t around in the dugout. My first thought was there was an injury during warm-ups, but I was thankfully wrong. Well, sort of thankful. When Merrill finally did take the mound and the game got underway, he did not look sharp, spraying pitches all over. Many pitches were not even close to the strike zone, and many of the pitches that did find the zone ended up getting smoked into the seats or into the outfield grass. A leadoff walk followed by a 2-run homer set the tone for the night and it did not let up from there as Merrill ended up giving up 6 hits, 3 BB and 3 HR. The bullpen’s performance wasn’t much more inspiring. Philip Abner and Kade Strowd made their first appearances after being recalled on Thursday from Reno and both went poorly. Abner loaded the bases and then gave up a Grand Slam before recording a single out, but he was eventually able to record 4 outs (while also allowing another homer). Kade Strowd, making the first appearance by any of the returns from the Blaze Alexander trade, started off well enough, getting the final 2 outs of the 7th inning including striking out James Wood looking on a cutter at the knees, but then it all went downhill. Strowd was extremely wild when he came back out in the 8th and loaded the bases while recording only one before leaving with the trainer and handing the ball off to Adrian Del Castillo to finish off the laugher. For ADC’s part, he only allowed one of the inherited runners to score in the 8th and allowed 1 run to score in the 9th. Better than the average for tonight’s crew! Finally, we come to the offense. I won’t say they were awful, but they just couldn’t find any open grass at all. The Nationals are a middle-of-the-pack defense or worse by all metrics I could find, but on this night, they looked like a lineup full of Gold Glovers. Several plays looked like possible hits, but instead were turned into harmless outs by some outstanding athleticism and glove work. It wasn’t necessarily bad luck and hitting right into the defensive positioning, but more like a night where you just tip your cap to the other side and admit they outplayed you.Geraldo Perdomo had his second night hitting down in the order, and for the second night in a row he got results like the Perdomo of old. Domo finished the night with 2 hits and hit the ball with authority. I won’t say that the move down the lineup made some sort of mental change and freed him up to play looser because he was still hitting the ball well before, it just seemed like he always hit it right at the defense. Tonight, he was the only one who didn’t get hit with some sort of amazing play to rob him of a hit. Aramis Garcia hit his first home run since 2022 for our only run of the night and Tommy Troy contributed 2 hits (one the benefit of some hometown scoring on a should-be error by CJ Abrams) and that was about it for the offense on the night. This was a frustrating game to watch. Maybe they’re just out of gas after a 4 game set against Guggenheim’s Billions and playing their 21st game in 22 days. Hopefully they snap back and win out to complete a series win.Loss Probability and Box ScoreOutside the Box ScoreStart off with the question likely on everyone’s mind, Groover was not using Santana’s now famous purple first baseman mitt tonight. The home run Merrill Kelly gave up in the first inning didn’t appear to be a bad pitch. A fastball several inches inside but credit to Luis García Jr. turning on it and just sneaking it fair into the visitor bullpen.Merrill recorded the first out of the game with an unconventional ‘kick save’ on a groundball up the middle. He stuck foot out behind him and the ball miraculously hit his cleat and stuck right there, allowing Merrill to easily bend down, pick up the ball and throw the runner out at first.Ryan Waldschmidt looked to hit a sure double into the right field corner in the 1st inning, but James Wood covered a ton of ground and turned it into a routine fly out. That defense was then one-upped by an incredible line drive snag by the Nationals second baseman to rob Corbin Carroll of a 2-out knock. The defender was fully airborne and parallel with the ground when he caught the liner and then was able to corral it without touching the ground when it squirted out of his glove.Ryan Waldschmidt returned the defensive favor by recording the first out of the second inning by laying out to catch a fly ball to shallow left. The defense in this game has been crazy and we’re only 7 outs in!Merrill gave up 4 runs in the third inning and it wasn’t some defensive miscues or seeing eye singles getting strung together that came back to bite him. The Nats were just all over Kelly. Merrill wasn’t sharp with his command, missing the zone badly when he missed; then when he came in the zone, the Nats were drilling the ball. On top of 2 walks, exit velocities that inning were: 106, 66, 108, 84, 103, 103. Tommy Troy’s sharp grounder just under the glove of the Nats third baseman in the 5th was the Diamondbacks first hit through the defense on the night. Aramis Garcia hit a home run in the third, but every ball hit into the field of play somehow found the glove of a Washington defender. Some nights, it’s just not your night.Philip Abner came on in the sixth for his first action after getting recalled Thursday from Reno and got bushwhacked. 2 homers, 1 of them a Grand Slam, and other assorted hits. Exit velocities included 114, 104, 106 and 101. Not exactly making a strong case to stay with the club past Taylor Clarke’s return to the active roster.Ildemaro Vargas made an appearance in tonight’s contest thanks to the lopsided score, and of course, one night after leaving the game because he ran into a dumptruck, he gets hit by a pitch in his only plate appearance. How is he still walking at this point?Comment of the GameThe GameDay Thread was definitely light tonight. Understandable considering the rout was on early. A final tally of 146 comments at time of publishing, but since no comments went red after the crews nightly introductions, we’ll just chalk this up as a total loss and not name any COTG.Coming UpThe Diamondbacks face the Nats for the second game of this 3-game set tomorrow afternoon with a rare Saturday 1:10pm first pitch at home. Righthander Zack Littell (5-4, 5.01 ERA) will take the mound for Washington and The Hologram (5-1, 2.24 ERA) takes the ball for the good guys.0 Comments 0 Shares 44 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMCharles Barkley announces the 2026 NBA Finals MVP, it’s not Victor Wembanyama or Jalen BrunsonPhoto by Mitchell Layton/Getty ImagesCharles Barkley has already made his NBA Finals MVP call after the New York Knicks opened a 2-0 lead over the San Antonio Spurs. The obvious names were there for the conversation. New York has its closer, while San Antonio has the superstar who still feels like the league’s future.Barkley, though, looked past both and picked the player whose two-way work has shaped the first two games of the series.Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty ImagesCharles Barkley picks Karl-Anthony Towns as New York Knicks Finals MVPOhnohedidnt24 shared Charles Barkley’s NBA Finals MVP pick, with the Hall of Famer giving Karl-Anthony Towns credit for controlling the series against the San Antonio Spurs.“The MVP of the Finals is going to be Karl-Anthony Towns. He has played two of the best games I’ve ever seen a big man play,” Barkley said.Chuck added, “He was great in Game 1. He was great in Game 2. That man earned his flowers.”The numbers give Barkley a strong case. Towns had 18 points, 12 rebounds, and four assists in Game 1, then followed with 21 points and 13 rebounds in New York’s 105-104 Game 2 win. Those performances have not been empty production. Towns has given the Knicks size, scoring balance, rebounding, and the physical resistance needed to make Victor Wembanyama work for everything.Karl-Anthony Towns has NBA Finals MVP case over Jalen Brunson and Victor WembanyamaJalen Brunson still owns New York’s biggest late-game moments, and Wembanyama nearly dragged San Antonio back in Game 2 with a second-half surge. Towns’ argument is different because it stretches across both ends.He has been efficient without needing to dominate the ball, while Brunson had to battle through a difficult shooting night in Game 2. Towns has also carried a demanding defensive assignment against Wembanyama, which makes his offensive numbers more valuable.Wembanyama’s raw numbers are strong, but the Spurs are down 2-0. Towns is producing for the team in control of the series, and his matchup impact has helped define why New York has survived both games.Barkley may be early, but he is not being reckless. Through two games, Towns has given the Knicks exactly the kind of steady, bruising, two-way presence that can win Finals MVP votes.Read more:Donald Trump names two ‘fantastic’ stars as his favorite New York Knicks players‘I was seeing her’ – Karl-Anthony Towns thanks late mother’s influence in NBA finals debutKarl-Anthony Towns did in one game what Chet Holmgren failed to do in seven games vs. Victor Wembanyama0 Comments 0 Shares 44 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMChandler Parsons: LeBron, Stephen Curry won't win NBA title togetherAll of a sudden, it seems as if the Golden State Warriors have become a real threat to acquire LeBron James this summer as a free agent. Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints reported this week that Stephen Curry is planning on meeting with James to discuss possibly teaming up on the Warriors.James and Curry have been good friends, especially since the two helped Team USA win an Olympic gold medal in 2024, and James is also tight with Warriors forward Draymond Green. On paper, a core of James, Curry, Green and six-time All-Star Jimmy Butler looks impressive, but former NBA player Chandler Parsons doesn't think Golden State would win it all with the four-time MVP (h/t Lakers Daily).“Sure, but do they win a championship? No,” Parsons said of the idea of James and Curry teaming up. “We’re talking the Western Conference with [San Antonio] Spurs, OKC, Denver, Houston, Lakers, Minnesota. They’re not gonna be better than most of those upper-echelon teams.“Now, it would be awesome. It’d be incredible to see Steph and Draymond, LeBron James wear a jersey in that arena for Steve Kerr. I think it’d be a cool story. I don’t think it moves the needle for the Warriors to be a championship contender, though, at all.”This season, Golden State went 37-45 and was without Curry and Butler for long stretches due to injury. The feeling around the league is that the franchise's dynasty is definitely over, even though Curry is still playing at a superstar level. Overall, the team's roster is long in the tooth, and Green has a $27.68 million player option for next season.James, who averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and 7.2 assists a game during the regular season, is still very much a superstar by NBA standards, even at age 41. This was his record 23rd season in the NBA, and he appears to have enough left in the tank for at least one more high-level campaign in the league. The Los Angeles Lakers can offer more money than any other team James will seriously consider going to in order to keep him. But if James' main goal is to play with his friends and form another superteam, that advantage L.A. has may not matter much. This article originally appeared on LeBron Wire: Chandler Parsons: LeBron, Stephen Curry won't win NBA title together0 Comments 0 Shares 44 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMReport: Bayern Munich’s Jonathan Asp Jensen has interest from clubs in Germany, Portugal and FranceBASEL, SWITZERLAND - MARCH 05: Metinho of FC Basel 1893 (L) and Jonathan Asp Jensen of Grasshopper Club Zurich (R) battle for the ball (duel) during the Swiss Super League match between FC Basel 1893 and Grasshopper Club Zurich at St. Jakob-Park on March 05, 2026 in Basel, Switzerland. (Photo by Daniela Porcelli/Getty Images) | Getty Images Since joining Bayern Munich in 2022, Jonathan Asp Jensen has gone from strength to strength. He excelled as part of the U-19s and the U-23s, leading to a loan move to Red&Gold partner club Grasshopper Zürich. There, he was given the #10 shirt and played a critical role in dragging the team through a poor season and helping them avoid relegation. During this time, the Dane accumulated 9 goals and 6 assists, many of which were the results of spectacular individual effort.Still, there is no space for Asp Jensen back at Bayern. With his market value rising and clubs from multiple countries registering their interest, the time is good to get value for the player. Bild reports (as captured by @iMiaSanMia) that this is exactly what the club will do:Jonathan Asp Jensen will not be returning to Bayern this summer after he was told by the club that he’s not in their plans. The Dane is now looking for a permanent transfer away from Munich. Thanks to his successful loan spell at Grasshopper Club Zürich, Asp Jensen has attracted interest from numerous clubs in the Bundesliga, as well as from France and Portugal. Bayern can expect a decent fee, since his market value has risen to €4m. Bayern could also secure a buy-back option or a sell-on clause in the event of a sale.BFW AnalysisIt is important Bayern secure a buy-back clause of some kind. Asp Jensen has shown real ability and mental fortitude in every step of his career and that is the kind of player that can still become useful for Bayern. Besides, he qualifies as homegrown. Perhaps there is no space in the squad for him now, but who knows how the squad will look like in a few years’ time?If you are looking for more Bayern Munich and German national team coverage, check out the latest episodes of Bavarian Podcast Works, which you can get on Acast, Spotify, Apple, or any leading podcast distributor… Join the conversation!Sign up for a user account and get:New, improved notifications system!Fewer adsCreate community postsComment on articles, community postsRec comments, community posts0 Comments 0 Shares 44 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMThree Potential Gonzaga Recruiting Targets From All Different Competition LevelsSPOKANE, WASHINGTON - DECEMBER 07: Head coach Mark Few of the Gonzaga Bulldogs walks off the court after his team beat the North Florida Ospreys at McCarthey Athletic Center on December 07, 2025 in Spokane, Washington. (Photo by Myk Crawford/Getty Images) | Getty Images The dog days of summer are underway, and three of the four newest Gonzaga Bulldogs recruits through the 2026 class have arrived a month early before the official team workouts start. Through the incoming NCAA transfer portal haul, both 6-6 Houston Cougars sophomore shooting guard/wing Isiah Harwell and 7-1 Arizona State Sun Devils sophomore center Massamba Diop are on campus in Spokane, Washington. As for the incoming high school class, 6-5 four-star wing Luca Foster of Link Academy in Branson, Missouri, has been getting comfortable inside the McCarthey Athletic Center for the last week. 7-0 four-star center Sam Funches told The Slipper Still Fits that he will arrive in the Lilac City next Saturday, June 13, coming from Germantown in Madison, Mississippi. Gonzaga’s 2026-27 roster is still not finished, with 10 of the 15 scholarship/walk-on spots filled to this point. The future group has had major hits ready to make an immediate impact with Diop and Harwell. But at the same time, dealing with a considerable loss through Alba Berlin combo guard Jack Kayil’s decision to stay in the 2026 NBA Draft. It’s not completely desperation mode for coach Mark Few and his staff with all the retained and fresh talent already present. But it is time to finalize some bench shooting and defensive support to compete alongside the man running the show, sophomore point guard Mario Saint-Supery. Here are three potential names with ties to the Zags from all the different walks of basketball life. That’s a late decommit in the 2026 high school class, a college portal target with a rough past, and an international prospect who does have a small sample size of college basketball experience. What a wide and weird range of candidates, but fitting for the ultimate confusion going around the college basketball scene.2026 Forward Alex ConstanzaA name in the 2026 high school recruiting class to pay attention to more than ever after decommitting from Georgetown Hoyas back in the middle of April. Gonzaga has been in conversations with 6-8 four-star forward Alex Constanza from SPIRE Academy in Geneva, Ohio, among many other high-level programs, since reopening his recruitment. Constanza has heard from the Baylor Bears, Houston Cougars, Creighton Bluejays, Butler Bulldogs, Auburn Tigers, UNLV Running Rebels, Virginia Cavaliers, Seton Hall Pirates, San Diego State Aztecs, and Florida Atlantic Owls. Shooting Guard/Wing James White Jr.This target is a strange one, with ethical confusion surrounding it. If any place could offer a recruit a blessed second opportunity, it would be with Few and the Gonzaga program. Friend of The Slipper Still Fits and current Florida Atlantic Director of Player Development, Eric McClellan, touched on this back in March of 2025. 6-5 shooting guard/wing James White Jr., previously of the New Orleans Privateers, was suspended in January of 2025 for NCAA violations related to sports gambling. That’s an extremely touchy and no-no subject across the entire college athletic landscape right now.The soon-to-be 23-year-old averaged 19.2 points on a shooting split of 42.9 field goal percentage/33.0 three-point percentage/64.0 free throw percentage and 7.0 rebounds in 20 games played for New Orleans during the 2024-25 season. White Jr. didn’t suit up anywhere in the 2025-26 season and is standing in no man’s land. KK Mega Basket Point Guard Savo DrezgicOut of the Serbian League/ABA League, 6-4 KK Mega Basket point guard Savo Drezgic has had previous conversations with Gonzaga. Drezgic had his taste of college basketball competition and wants more, having been with the Georgia Bulldogs during the 2024-25 season.Another SEC program that is talking with the traditional lead guard is the Kentucky Wildcats and coach Mark Pope. The California Golden Bears and the Arizona State Wildcats are two additional West Coast schools rumored to have interest.Drezgic, turning just 20 years of age in August, would be a wonderful international substitute for now Notre Dame Fighting Irish point guard Braeden Smith with the 2026-27 Zags’ second unit, under Saint-Supery. Who even knows what ends up happening with Gonzaga commit, well-traveled 6-10 Real Madrid forward/center Izan Almansa and his eligibility battle with the NCAA for the upcoming season? If that doesn’t work out for the 20-year-old, it adds another late question mark for the highly-anticipated frontcourt depth that consists of Diop, Funches, star redshirt senior power forward Braden Huff, as well as redshirt freshman forward/small-ball center Parker Jefferson. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMHow Hunter Elliott's 'guts' kept crazy Ole Miss NCAA Tournament stat going vs AuburnAUBURN, AL — Ole Miss baseball got a somewhat standard performance from starting pitcher Hunter Elliott in the super regional. When it happens in the NCAA Tournament, that's good for the Rebels. The Rebels beat Auburn 6-4 on June 5 in Game 1 of a super regional at Plainsman Park. Ole Miss improved to 6-0 all-time in the NCAA Tournament when Elliott is the starting pitcher."He's got as much guts as anybody that's ever put on this uniform," coach Mike Bianco said of Elliott.Elliott pitched 4⅓ innings against Auburn and allowed two earned runs. He limited what could have been a lot more damage.Elliott walked more batters (four) than he struck out (two). His key was getting double plays. Auburn had the bases loaded in the second and thing innings but hit into double plays both times. That why Bianco gushed about Elliott postgame. Elliott didn't have his best stuff, but he pushed through."On the mound, for our reporters and our fans that have seen Hunter Elliot for so many years, he can have games like that where it looks like it's not going to be his night," Bianco said. "But he just makes pitches and gets off the field."Elliott was struggling coming into the game. His ERA over his previous five starts was 8.37 with 22 earned runs in 23⅔ innings.Relief pitcher Hudson Calhoun (5-3) recorded the win. He relieved Elliott in the fifth and stranded two runners that were Elliot's responsibility.Calhoun pitched 2⅔ innings and allowed one earned run. Closer Walker Hooks got the save and allowed one earned run over two innings."Of course a huge part of the game, besides the offense, was Calhoun coming in the fifth and getting off the field with a couple big outs," Bianco said.Sam Hutchens covers Ole Miss for the Clarion Ledger. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMNBA Finals 2026: How the Spurs' dynamic duo cost them Game 2 ... and likely the seriesSAN ANTONIO —For all the communication that had transpired over the final 12 minutes of the Spurs’ 105-104 loss to the New York Knicks in Game 2, it was perhaps a fitting inflection point of their first Finals — and a cruel punishment from the basketball gods — that the lack of understanding between Victor Wembanyama and Stephon Castle, one of basketball’s most exceptional pairings, ultimately became their undoing. As the game progressed in the fourth quarter, with the Knicks flexing their muscle and mettle, the Spurs’ huddle size increased exponentially as their deficit grew, originating as two separate groups before conjoining into one large, anxious assemblage. The bigger the moment, the louder Wembanyama’s voice became, removing his mouthpiece like a boxer heading into final rounds, passionately pleading with his teammates to seize the moment. But by the time the dust had settled, even with San Antonio having climbed out of a 14-point hole in the waning seconds, it was Wembanyama’s mistake that cost his franchise dearly. The Frenchman had already successfully defended Jalen Brunson’s attempt at a game-winner, secured the rebound and looked to push the pace. Castle, who had only recently checked in, having been benched for the better part of half the quarter, briefly looked back in Wembanyama’s direction before charging up the floor. And it was at that moment, with Castle’s back fully turned, that Wembanyama, unsure if his teammate wanted the ball or not, relinquished control. “I was looking at him when he first got the rebound,” Castle said following the game. “I just started to take off to try to give him some space to dribble up the court. I didn’t see him throw it to me. … At that point, I’m just running up the court. I see Vic has the ball. Tie game. I’m just trying to give him space. Whether he called it or not, I was just trying to give Vic space.”The sting of the irony of Wembanyama and Castle — who had been one of the most prominent two-man combos during the regular season and paced all playoff teams — not being on the same page will remain for some time, especially with a game being as winnable as that. (The Spurs will especially regret letting go of the rope in both games in which late fourth-quarter leads were held, with Finals history unforgiving of teams that fall 0-2 in a series.) “I need to have more poise, more control over the game,” Wembanyama said following the game. “... That's the most frustrating thing, to throw it away after putting in all this work. What did I think? Urgency at this point. It's like [the] body reacts quicker than [the] mind.”But their issues getting over the finish line are simply a microcosm of a desperate, connected Knicks team that has seemingly bested them at every turn, every angle. Basketball in June is not judged by the quality of process, only the quality of result. And again in Game 2, the product was less than aesthetically pleasing. New York and San Antonio scored just 88.8 and 91.7 points per 100 half-court possessions, marks that would have ranked 29th and 30th during the regular season by some distance. There were 43 combined fouls and 31 turnovers. There was more pushing, shoving and grappling than a WWE bout. And Brunson — who was the hero of Game 1 — was largely kept in check, finishing with 20 points on just 7-for-25 shooting. Despite that, New York did just enough and, far too often, San Antonio was second-best to react. The Knicks controlled the offensive glass and, by proxy, the possession game, corralling twice as many second-chance opportunities and taking 11 more shots. The Spurs, who had feasted in the opening frame by pounding the paint to the tune of 18 points, failed to adjust to the Knicks’ rim protection adjustments, seeing an 87.5 success rate of rim shots plummet nearly 30% by the time the final buzzer sounded. Wembanyama finished with a game-high 29 points but often felt secondary to Karl-Anthony Towns’ complete control at both ends of the floor, the unicorn routinely brandishing his bravery in the face of the extraterrestrial. A strong bounceback performance from De’Aaron Fox, improved shooting from Devin Vassell and Dylan Harper’s continued success wasn’t enough to offset poor showings from Keldon Johnson and Luke Kornet — nor was it capable of keeping up with New York’s bevy of shot-makers. (The Spurs' underlying overall issues in clutch playoff scenarios can't be ignored, either, ranking dead last in turnover rate, sixth-worst in effective field goal percentage and seventh-worst in true shooting percentage, according to Second Spectrum. A combination of mistakes from the likes of Castle and Fox, rushed possessions by Wembanyama and a structure the Knicks continue to poke at in crunchtime.)“We don't feel like we played well or up to our standard at least in the last two games,” head coach Mitch Johnson said. “New York has played very well and they're a part of that.”From an emotional and logistical standpoint, Game 3 will be the most vicious, aggressive environment the Spurs have ever been in. The mood following Game 1, an optimistic, anticipatory one, has surely been replaced by desperation and confusion after 96 minutes of grit, grind and brilliant game and roster management by Mike Brown and his staff. Additional chess moves can still be made in the games to come — the Spurs found success utilizing more pick-and-roll, moving the ball and attacking gaps in the Knicks’ rotations — but tactics can’t quantify the impact of, say, Josh Hart and Jose Alvarado attacking the glass with fire and aplomb regardless of their inconsistent offensive showings. New York’s heart is large and burns bright. San Antonio still has some emotional intelligence work to do. Wembanyama clapped enthusiastically as he trotted off the floor, with New York’s own invading the lower bowls with songs and dance, much like the Spurs had done in Oklahoma City late last month after vanquishing a vaunted foe. With their backs firmly against the wall, there’s nowhere else for San Antonio to run but toward the fight, as improbable as it may seem. “We can't change the past now,” Wembanyama said. “We're already focused on Game 3. …Yeah, I threw that one away. I messed up. We didn't play great as a team. We needed to win that game. This game was ours. But at this point, it's done. Yes, am I going to regret it? Yes, of course. Am I going to use that to fuel me and to fuel us next game? Absolutely.”0 Comments 0 Shares 44 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMInter and Tottenham come forward for Evan NdickaInter and Tottenham come forward for Evan NdickaAwaiting D’Amico, in addition to Gasperini, are the agents of the three players whose contracts are expiring.Dybala, Pellegrini, and Celik have expressed their willingness to stay with the coach. However, since the end of May, they have been put on hold, with the departure of sports director Massara, who was initially tasked with explaining to the respective managers the basis on which Roma would propose their renewals, writes Ugo Trani in Il Corriere della Sera. A basic agreement has apparently been reached. However, the signatures are still missing. And there is a slight risk. Because these are players who, with their contracts expiring, can find admirers. The Giallorossi’s advantage remains the Champions League, a competition that for now obliges them to continue their adventure with Gasperini. This is the same reason that is making Ndicka’s transfer to Tottenham difficult: the Ivorian, also targeted by Chivu for Inter’s defense, is a target of De Zerbi for next season. Roma’s asking price is €35 million.0 Comments 0 Shares 44 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COM‘Found those comments to be in very poor taste’ – Interim Barcelona president reacts to Atletico’s meltdown tweets‘Found those comments to be in very poor taste’ – Interim Barcelona president reacts to Atletico’s meltdown tweetsBarcelona’s pursuit of Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez has become one of the biggest talking points of the summer, and club officials are clearly unimpressed with how the situation has been handled in the Spanish capital. The latest chapter in the growing tension between the two clubs came after Atletico Madrid published a series of social media posts mocking Barcelona’s reported interest in the Argentine forward. The posts featured edited images of players such as Raphinha, Lamine Yamal and Pedri wearing Atletico shirts, accompanied by humorous messages that attracted attention across Spanish football. While the posts generated plenty of reactions online, they did not go down well at Barcelona.Yuste makes Barcelona’s position clearSpeaking publicly about the controversy, interim Barcelona president Rafa Yuste made it clear that he viewed Atletico’s actions as crossing a line and failing to reflect the standards expected between two major clubs.Barcelona’s interest in Alvarez has caused a reaction from Atletico. (Photo by Justin Setterfield/Getty Images)Addressing the situation, Yuste did not hide his disappointment with Atletico Madrid’s approach.“The truth is that I found those comments to be in very poor taste, but we must focus on what we do as a club. “Good manners come first and we must set an example, from the president right down to the last member of the board,” he said, according to AS.More to the storyDespite the online exchanges, Yuste stressed that Barcelona’s sporting department remains fully focused on its transfer plans. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMFox Sports' World Cup marketing game plan focuses on connecting fansJun 5, 2026; Dallas, Texas, USA; A general view of scenes around Arlington ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. SANTA MONICA, Calif. – Some of soccer’s biggest stars made an appearance on the Santa Monica Pier last Thursday -well, their inflatable versions did. Three 40-foot-tall inflatable clones of reigning World Cup champion Lionel Messi, Spain’s Lamine Yamal and the United States Men’s National Team’s (USMNT) Christian Pulisic added a temporary attraction for piergoers. Fans pose with FOX Sports GIANTS OF THE GAME inflatable clones of Lamine Yamal, Lionel Messi and Christian Pulisc at Santa Monica Pier on May 28, 2026Courtesy of FOX SportsFans pose with FOX Sports Giants of the Game inflatable clones of Lamine Yamal, Lionel Messi and Christian Pulisc at Santa Monica Pier on May 28, 2026For some fans, the inflatable trio represents more than just stars of the game. They reflect the growing generations drawn to the sport. "It's nice that my son can see his generation's players play with the ones I grew up with in the city we live in," said Rodrigo H., a lifelong FC Barcelona fan and Los Angeles native. His son Antonio's favorite player at the moment is Yamal, who has drawn frequent comparisons to Messi, as both have worn the #10 jersey at Barcelona. The Marketing GoalThe giant inflatables were one of FOX Sports’ most recent activations as part of the branding campaign ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. A campaign that FOX Sports Senior Vice President of Brand Marketing, Whit Haskel, told the Sporting Tribune aims to “celebrate this U.S. team, and aggressively promote them in different ways, because outside Christian Pulisic, people may not be familiar with some of these players."So, what's the game plan for Fox Sports' branding and marketing campaign to familiarize new audiences? “It's all building awareness and recognition of this team and hoping that they, you know, achieve greatness this year in their backyard,” said Haskel. jhkgk at the 2026 Indy 500 in Indianapolis, INCourtesy of FOX SportsFOX Sports Giants of the Game inflatable clones of Lamine Yamal, Lionel Messi and Christian Pulisic at the 2026 Indy 500 in Indianapolis, INThis includes bringing activations to various communities. The inflatable trio previously made surprise appearances in World Cup-themed towns across the country, including Belgium, WI, Brazil, IN and Holland, MI, before stopping at the 2026 Indy 500. Eleven cities across four regions will host FIFA matches in the United States. Part of the marketing strategy has been creating audience connections to the USMNT through projects like the Hometown Heroes campaign- FOX Sports’ principal World Cup promotional campaign. The Hometown Heroes campaign highlights the journeys, local roots, and hometown pride of USMNT players. These storylines are featured throughout their pre-game shows and during tournament matches. FOX has been airing and publishing digital segments that focus on the stories of USMNT stars, including Christian Pulisic (Hershey, PA), Tyler Adams (New York) and 2026 World Cup Captain Tim Ream (St. Louis, MO). FOX Sports' 'Miracle' World Cup ad, which launched last month, bridges former USA glory with a new USMNT goal. It features cameos from USMNT players including Pulisic, Tim Ream, and Diego Luna, as well as former U.S. coach Bruce Arena. Fox Sports analysts Tom Brady and Zlatan Ibrahimović also appear. The last cameo comes from Mike Eruzione, captain of the "Miracle on Ice" 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team. The ad envisions the USMNT and Brazil facing off in the World Cup final, set for July 19 in New Jersey. To the soundtrack of Elvis Presley's song “The Impossible Dream", Pulisic scores the tournament-clinching goal off a last-second corner kick, sending the crowd erupting with cheers. Target Market ReachFOX Sports holds exclusive English-language broadcast rights to all 104 FIFA World Cup matches in the United States on FOX and FS1. Spanish-language broadcast rights in the U.S. are held by NBCUniversal’s Telemundo. The 2022 Qatar World Cup attracted a global audience of 5 billion viewers across Linear TV, Digital, Social Media, and FIFA Platforms, according to FIFA’s 2022 audience report. Fox Sports' coverage of the 2022 FIFA World Cup Final between Argentina and France peaked at 16.78 million viewers. According to YouGov's FIFA World Cup 2026 global brand handbook, approximately 87 million Americans express at least “a little interest” in the World Cup. As the game gains more popularity in the U.S., changing audience demographics represent both the present and future of American soccer fandom. Newer fans are significantly younger (35% aged 16-24 vs. 15% of established fans), more female (53% vs. 38%), and more diverse (29% Black vs. 16%) than established supporters (those following for 6+ years).Hardcore fans will be tuning in to matches and fan fests across North America. But what about the new or casual ones? This time around, Fox Sports is focused on attracting new audiences through community outreach and social media with its new initiative, the Fox Sports Creator Club, in partnership with the Los Angeles-based agency Digital Media Marketing (DMM)."We envision it being a way that we can be even more active in this space, as we move into the fall, and essentially, with an agency named DMM, we're recruiting hundreds and hundreds of influencers," said Haskel. Fox Sports is looking for local creators in FIFA World Cup Host Cities to create unique content surrounding the tournament and future sporting events. "It's a program that seems to be working really, really well right now. All the things are just hitting, whether it's a personalized pair of Adidas sneakers, your name on the back of a jersey, or access to different viewing events throughout the country."To be considered for the Fox Sports Creator Club, creators and influencers apply to attend events and to participate in activation opportunities developed internally at Fox Sports. In return for attending the opportunities, creators are asked to tag the company and share their experiences on their social platforms. The influencers involved represent different audiences that Fox Sports hopes to reach outside of the game. "We'll definitely have a huge number of soccer influencers, but we want to go way beyond the core, because this is the type of event that goes beyond the core. We've got food influencers, culture influencers, baseball and football influencers, NFL, I mean, and so forth and so on as a part of this club, and we hope to be able to leverage the relationship that we build with them as we move into the fall and find unique opportunities.""We only reach a certain number of people on our platforms, and we have to go way outside our platforms to connect with other sports fans and other fans of big events like this. We're aggressively doing that," said Haskel.0 Comments 0 Shares 44 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMThe pioneer in an unlikely World Cup team[Getty Images]When Desmond Armstrong faced the media at the 1990 World Cup in Italy, the opening question he was asked wasn't about the remarkable feat of the USA team reaching the tournament for the first time in four decades."Why aren't you playing basketball?" was directed at Armstrong, then a 25-year-old defender, who was about to become the first US-born black player to represent the United States at a World Cup."There were no congratulations, or 'how excited are you to be here?'" Armstrong tells BBC Sport."The stereotype was 'you're an American and you're black, so you should be playing basketball'. Beyond the fact that Americans shouldn't be here in the first place, why are you here?"Days later, he would keep the prolific Italy striker Gianluca Vialli off the scoresheet in a brilliant man-marking display against the hosts at the Stadio Olimpico - a performance that marked a huge turning point for football in the United States and for Armstrong himself. The ripples from that match in Rome are still being felt today.Football came to Armstrong, via a television set, in suburbia. His family moved from the Southeast part of Washington DC when Armstrong was young and later settled in a largely white neighbourhood in Maryland, where he befriended a soccer coach's son. One afternoon, the coach called Armstrong over to the television. He was pointing to a Brazilian in a New York Cosmos jersey."It was Pele," says Armstrong."His movement reminded me of a lot of the point guards that played basketball, but he was doing it with a ball at his feet."He was one of the few black players on the team, so that connected me."While Pele was popularising a game he'd learned barefoot on the streets of Brazil, much of the American grassroots version was being built on privilege.Unlike the developing youth academies of Europe and South America, where clubs like Ajax and Barcelona were putting money into young talent, development in the US has long run on a pay-to-play model.Families must meet significant costs or seek sponsorship to give their children a shot at advancing - creating a system that has seldom favoured those from less affluent households."It's kind of antithetical to what this game's all about," says Frank Dell'Apa, who has spent 40 years as the Boston Globe's football columnist, covering the game since the days of the original North American Soccer League (NASL)."This is the simplest game with the easiest access. Everybody plays it around the world with no money, no soccer balls, no shoes. And here, we had just the opposite thing going on."Armstrong knows just how easily his story could have been different."If my folks didn't move into the suburbs, then hands down I'm not playing soccer," he says.Socioeconomics was not the only hurdle. The NASL going under in 1985 during Armstrong's time as a college player limited professional pathways for him and his peers before their careers had even begun."For me, personally, that was crushing," Armstrong says.He turned to the Major Indoor Soccer League to play professionally, where his performances earned him a US men's national team debut in 1987, followed by a spot at the 1988 Seoul Olympics."I remember being on the field, hearing the national anthem and just thinking 'this is where I'm supposed to be'," he says. That same year, world football's governing body Fifa had selected the USA to host the 1994 World Cup finals - the first time the tournament had gone to a country outside Europe or Latin America. They would be under the global spotlight."The US was not a factor in world soccer at all," says Dell'Apa."I remember Des playing a lot of games on artificial turf. It was hard for those guys. They had to fight to get into line-ups, to get a playing field, to get a stadium."With no elite outdoor professional league in the country, the player pool was a fragmented mix largely consisting of college, semi-pro and indoor players like Armstrong. The federation looked to work around this by securing a core group of them on full-time contracts, essentially turning the national team into the country's professional set-up. It was an unorthodox approach, not unlike something from the Eastern Bloc playbook. They appointed a German-Hungarian head coach named Bob Gansler. Armstrong was now among a group of young players who were handed a near impossible task: qualify for the 1990 World Cup in Italy.Desmond Armstrong was capped 81 times by the USA [Getty Images]It is Sunday, 19 November 1989 and the catchy staccato theme tune of ESPN's SportsCenter plays out on American television."We've got football news - we call it soccer - the rest of the world calls it football," says anchor Bob Ley in an upbeat delivery to the camera. The USA had secured a shock win over Trinidad and Tobago in Port of Spain to claim the final spot for Italia '90. So sure had the hosts been of progressing with a draw, their government had already declared the following day a national holiday."It was quite simply the most important soccer match the US has played for the last two generations," Ley reads, having to spell out to American viewers the magnitude of the result.Armstrong, who was watching from the sidelines because of an ankle injury, ran on to the pitch at the full-time whistle."Everybody was going crazy," he says."We got there with no pro league in the country. Unbelievable. But everybody in America couldn't care less."In 1990, racial tensions in America were on the rise. The 1989 murder of black teenager Yusef Hawkins by a white mob in Brooklyn had ignited protests and exposed a deep-seated oppression that foreshadowed the 1991 beating of Rodney King by white police officers, and the subsequent LA Riots.Yet, black representation was cutting through the American mainstream - whether through Carole Gist making history as the first black woman to win Miss USA, or the explosive rise of hip-hop.As Armstrong recalls, artists like NWA and Public Enemy were "telling you the story of what was going on in our community through a medium that everybody was locked in on".Against this backdrop, Armstrong stepping on to the pitch in Italy was not just an sporting achievement."For an African-American that started playing soccer at 12 years of age, to make it to not just the national team but the World Cup and start - you can't even write that," he says. The USA were in a group with Czechoslovakia, hosts Italy, and Austria [Getty Images]Frank Dell'Apa was at the Stadio Comunale in Florence when the US lost their first group match 5-1 to Czechoslovakia."It was a real wake-up call for the US," he says. "They had to realise tactically who they were and what they could do."That realisation would be tested at their next game against the hosts in front of a 73,000-strong crowd in Rome. The Italy side reflected Serie A's formidable strength, featuring the likes of Franco Baresi, Paolo Maldini and Roberto Donadoni. The Azzurri even had the luxury of leaving Juventus' world record signing, Roberto Baggio, on the bench. The Stadio Olimpico was expecting a blood bath.Armstrong's assignment: stop Gianluca Vialli."Vialli was the man," he says. "I'm going to be his shadow."I look across the field and we catch eye contact. In my mind I'm saying 'you're not going to get the ball'."A lone goal came in the 11th minute from Italy midfielder Giuseppe Giannini, and the blowout did not follow. Both Vialli and Salvatore 'Toto' Schillaci, whom Armstrong marked in the second half, failed to score."A very unimpressive Italian performance which will cause some indignation and some hostility in their press tomorrow," said the BBC's match commentary at full-time.It also praised the "plucky" display by the US, "who people thought had come to Rome as whipping boys but in fact have gone off the pitch with a very respectable score".Despite leaving the tournament after losing 2-1 to Austria in their final group game, the US had already laid the foundations for the future of American soccer. And for Armstrong, he got noticed as a defender.Bags of urine, cans of Bud and the team that saved US soccerDesmond Armstrong tracks Salvatore 'Toto' Schillaci, who would go on to become the 1990 World Cup's top goalscorer [Getty Images]The following year he spent two weeks training with Luton Town. The then First Division club were interested in signing Armstrong when he received a phone call from his agent asking if he wanted to go to Brazil."Yeah, I want to be on the beach. I'm in England, it's all grey skies and these guys drink tea at half-time. What club?""Santos.""Get me the plane ticket."Armstrong became the first American player to sign a professional contract in Brazil, where he would spend a single season with Pele's former club.He sets the scene of the media converging on him after getting off the plane.Though he didn't realise it in the moment, the man interpreting for him was Edinho, a goalkeeper at the club - and Pele's son. When reporters asked how he would communicate without speaking a word of Portuguese, Armstrong replied: "I guess I'm going to have to smile."He had no idea the interview was being broadcast across the country and when he walked into the Santos dressing room, every one of his new team-mates had huge grins on their faces in response.Armstrong bursts into laughter at the memory."It was the highlight of my career because I used to watch Pele, the master in his method. Just a wonderful, wonderful experience."Following a season in a semi-professional US league, Armstrong ended his playing career in 1996 at the age of 31 to transition into coaching. You can't talk about Desmond Armstrong without mention of Jimmy Banks - or "Gee" as Armstrong affectionately calls him.Banks was the only other black player in the squad, and although he didn't feature in the opener at Italia '90, he started in both remaining group games as the US looked to strengthen their backline.Banks was diagnosed with cancer and died in 2019 aged 54, but memories of being room-mates in Italy and going to Janet Jackson concerts together are still vivid."I've a lot of love towards him and our time together," says an emotional Armstrong. The pair met as 15-year-olds in a tournament. Both spotted they were the only black players on their teams and exchanged jerseys, becoming friends with a shared ambition of making the national team. And when they both went into coaching, they made sure their teams played each other.Desmond Armstrong runs a youth programme in Antioch [BBC Sport]Not far from the country music playground of downtown Nashville, Armstrong loads his pick-up truck with footballs and sets off for the melting-pot neighbourhood of Antioch.Wherever he stops, he is met with a pound hug. At the Kurdish cafe, it's "Galatasaray" and "Amedspor". At the petrol station, the Egyptian and Iraqi attendants want to talk about Mo Salah. Football is the common language here.Through his grassroots club, he has made it his mission over the past 14 years to bring football to the city's immigrant-rich population - driving children to games, sourcing pitches and often funding kit and entry fees from his own pocket."There are some really talented kids over here," he says. Now that he has joined forces with Armada FC, where he is the director of coaching, not only does Armstrong have access to dedicated facilities, but also a better location.Since heightened activity from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Nashville over the last year - as part of the Trump administration's immigration crackdown - Armstrong says members of the Hispanic community avoid travelling outside of Antioch, meaning some children had not been making it to games."They don't want to get pulled over in the car," he says. "They want to drive in areas where they're most comfortable and, in their minds, feel they're not going to be harassed."At Armstrong's youth programme, it has heightened a sense of community among parents, who set up group chats to co-ordinate lifts for children of fearful families."If you don't feel comfortable taking the kid out of town, we're here," says Maria, who is there to watch her younger brother play. She is among a strong turnout of Hispanic family members, and a chorus of "vamos, vamos!" can be heard as they cheer on the children."There are different cultures and it just brings us all together."For teenagers Abdi and Kylan, who were both scouted by Armstrong and credit him entirely for getting them into the sport, the former national team player's pioneering status doesn't fully register until they see photographs."1990. Wow," says Abdi, staring at the images of his coach in a USA kit. Kylan laughs at the retro styling: "He's there with the tucked-in shirt. He doesn't even have the moustache any more."Chris Richards is in the USA team for this year's World Cup [Getty Images]Members of the current US team know exactly who Armstrong is, and one admiring player even has similar facial hair."Look at you rocking that moustache, dude," Armstrong says on a video call. Some 4,000 miles away, Chris Richards pops up on screen, laughing as he says: "I'm trying to bring the old school vibe back!"Aged 26, the Alabama-born Crystal Palace defender is a key member of the 2026 World Cup squad, which is the most diverse a men's national team group has ever been."For people that look like us, it's taken a while to get to this point, and you're one of the pioneers of that," Richards says. The centre-back is on his own mission to broaden the reach of US youth development - "so that a kid like myself would never have to leave to chase the dream".Although the rise of funded Major League Soccer youth academies has paved the way for him and US team-mates like Weston McKennie and Tyler Adams, Richards knows the path to professionalism is not straightforward for those outside the reach of MLS hubs."It's expensive to play back home," Richards tells Armstrong. "I've seen a lot of kids drop out of the sport because they couldn't afford it."Without your contribution, your bravery, your courage, I wouldn't be here, so I really want to give you all the flowers."Your generation was probably the least spoken about, but I don't want you to ever feel like it goes unnoticed, because we very much feel our history and it started with you."0 Comments 0 Shares 44 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMFIFA switch: Water bottles now allowed in most World Cup stadiumsAround a week before the start of the football World Cup, FIFA has again changed its rules and is now allowing fans to bring water bottles into stadiums at least in the United States and Canada."All fans will be permiited to bring one, soft, plastic, 20 ounces (590ml), factory sealed disposable water bottle into any FIFA World Cup 2026 match in the USA and Canada," FIFA's chief operating officer Heimo Schirgi said in a video published online on Saturday. He said he wanted to bring "some clarity" to the rules. Containers made of hard plastic and open, refillable drinking cups or bottles are not permitted. The policy represents a reversal, as shortly before FIFA had justified and reaffirmed its ban on bringing any water bottles even empty ones into stadiums on security grounds, saying that policy was designed to prevent injuries to fans and players alike.Criticism from mayors of host cities was clearThere was fierce criticism from fan representatives and also from politicians such as Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow, who described the water bottle ban and the de facto requirement to buy water inside the stadium as "pure money-making." Six World Cup matches will be played in Toronto.New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani had also expressed concern about the FIFA rule and, after the U-turn, told The Athletic that he is "glad" that FIFA reversed its policy."No one should have to fear being priced out of being hydrated, especially fans who are often waiting for hours before a game in extreme heat."0 Comments 0 Shares 44 Views 0 Reviews -
SPORTS.YAHOO.COMMets' Luis Torrens 'finally' hits first home run of season as part of big nightLuis Torrens had gone 101 at-bats to begin the regular season without a home run this season, but in his 102nd at-bat he unloaded a 413-foot blast to straightaway center field for a two-run shot that put the Mets up 4-0 against the San Diego Padres on Friday night.Although Torrens isn’t necessarily a power hitter, he’s a backup catcher after all, he does have some pop, even hitting 15 homers one year as the everyday catcher for the Seattle Mariners in 2021.In his third season in New York Torrens has been playing regularly as of late with Francisco Alvarez on the IL recovering from a meniscus tear in his right knee. The veteran has always been a defensive whiz behind the plate, but he’s had some big hits this year for the Mets – none bigger, or at least farther, than Friday’s home run.“Finally I got my first homer,” he said after the 5-0 win. “It’s always good when you’re available to help the team win games and tonight was one of those times.”Not only did Torrens go deep for the first time this year, he also had a double, drove in two and scored two all from the No. 9 spot in the lineup. He also caught Christian Scott’s 5.2 scoreless innings as well as the following 3.1 scoreless innings from the bullpen.“It was good to see the offense, especially Luis, have a really good game there,” manager Carlos Mendoza said. “Not easy to hit that ball to dead center on a night like that in San Diego. Overall, I thought we played a pretty good game.”As for Scott’s performance, Torrens attributes the great start to executing their game plan against the Padres who entered the game losers of nine of their last 10 games and an offense that has been reeling.“Tonight was a great example of execution of a game plan,” Torrens said in regards to Scott. “We attacked the zone, threw all the pitches.”Scott’s fastball, in particular, had San Diego uncomfortable all night and he used it to set up his other pitches like the sweeper, cutter and changeup.“I thought I did a good job with my fastball in the strike zone,” Scott said. “I thought LT called a great game. I didn’t have my best stuff today but [just to] go out there and compete with the fastball and fastball location was huge for me today and I thought the defense played great too.”“He kinda set the tone there, attacking hitters,” Mendoza added. “I like how he moved the fastball around the plate. The sweeper was a good pitch for him.”Scott has been on an incredible stretch recently, allowing one earned run over his last three starts and lowering his ERA to 2.50. But Friday’s gem was the first of the last three starts that Torrens has behind the plate. In fact, entering Friday, the right-hander owned a 5.40 ERA in six starts with Torrens, the worst mark with any catcher but also the most starts with any catcher. With Torrens an important part of the team, it’s imperative he and Scott get on the same page and it looked like on Friday they were finally able to do that.“He was able to command pretty much all of his pitches and he’s been able to attack the zone kinda with the same type of game plan that we’ve prepared with,” Torrens said. “But also he’s been able to just prove the type of pitcher that he is.”“He’s a really nice guy to catch,” Torrens added. “He’s easy and the fastball is different and when he’s [able] to throw it for strikes it’s special.”0 Comments 0 Shares 44 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMNBA Finals: Breaking down the most brutal 30 seconds of Victor Wembanyama's careerThirty seconds. It's enough to change a lifetime.Whether the final 30 seconds of Game 2 of the 2026 NBA Finals alters the course of San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama's career remains to be seen, for the 7-foot-4 phenom is still only 22 years old, but there is no doubt he was shook in the biggest moment of a three-year journey into this league from France. At halftime, when Wemby had as many turnovers (2) as made field goals, Charles Barkley, the all-time player and broadcaster, already figured this Spur was shaken."Wemby's in shock right now. It's probably been a long time since he's got his ass kicked like this. … When you're a great player, very rarely do you get your ass kicked," said Barkley, recalling two times — once in high school, by Lewis Jackson, and once in college, by Leonard Mitchell, when he had his own ass kicked in such a manner."Wemby's spinning," added Barkley. "He's throwing the ball all over the place. It's a shock to his system. He's too young to understand. … He is so flustered right now. We can say what we want to: 'He's 22. He's going to own the league soon.' But, right now, Big KAT [Karl-Anthony Towns] is taking his ass to the woodshed, plain and simple."The panel concurred: "KAT has him in shock."All of which helped set the stage for the last 30 seconds of what was a thriller — one the New York Knicks won, 105-104, swiping a 2-0 series lead — when a better version of Wembanyama had earned the right to be a hero, a GOAT, only to be, well, the goat.Following his poor first-half performance, Wembanyama came to play in the second, pushing his total to 29 points on 11-for-19 shooting … until those final 30 seconds. It washis driving hoop-and-harm that gave the Spurs a 104-102 lead in the final minute.Jalen Brunson, of course, doing what he does, tied the game, 104-104, with a fallaway jumper as the clock struck 39 seconds left, granting the stage back to Wembanyama. And you could explain away each of Wemby's miscues in the ensuing moments. He was going for a 2-for-1 when he took a contested long 2-pointer against Mitchell Robinson from the left side of the court with exactly 30 seconds left in the tie game.Stephon Castle was not looking when, after the rare Brunson miss, Wembanyama corralled the rebound and tossed the outlet pass into his teammate's back. Brunson grabbed the errant pass and fell to the floor as Wemby, really, barely touched him. And, following Brunson's 1-for-2 effort at the free-throw line, trailing, 105-104, with a chance to win the game, Wembanyama got a good look at another long jump shot. But it landed long. And when you combine the entirety of that 30 seconds — the two missed long 2s, when the big man could've attacked the basket, sandwiching an all-time turnover, plus that foul, well, it can be an earth-shattering moment in his career. And, man, did he look distraught about it.And he sounded pretty beat up about it, too."I'm still very blurry," he told reporters after a second straight blown opportunity. "That's the whole problem. I need to have more poise, more control over the game. I'm not going to go through the whole possessions, but that's the general image."One could argue that these are just the bounces of the game. Had either of those shots fallen, or had Castle been paying attention, Wembanyama might have been the hero, taking a 1-1 series on the road, carrying a bit of momentum in his luggage. As Wemby said, "Of course, I liked the shot. I feel like in this moment, you need to shoot to score. In moments like this, it's like results matter more than process, if you know what I mean. We just need to score. I just need to score. That's the whole point."Instead, none of those three possessions fell in his favor, and now he is facing a 2-0 hole and Game 3 in Madison Square Garden on Monday. He was shook. He may still be shaken. We cannot predict the future, but we know what we just saw, and that was Wembanyama failing catastrophically in the biggest moment of his young career. He has a chance to rewrite the script, and there is precedent here. A 24-year-old Bill Walton, playing in just his third NBA season for the Portland Trail Blazers (the only Finals team younger than these Spurs), fell behind to Julius Erving's Philadelphia 76ers in the 1977 NBA Finals, 2-0 (albeit on the road), only to win the next four games. But that was not against these Knicks in MSG for the hottest ticket in the world. This is the moment Wembanyama now faces, and we saw how he met the last moment he faced. Will he respond? If he doesn't, he may relive those 30 seconds for a lifetime.0 Comments 0 Shares 44 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMKarl-Anthony Towns is outplaying Victor Wembanyama, Knicks are two wins from title because of itSAN ANTONIO — If the vote took place after two games, Karl-Anthony Towns would be the NBA Finals MVP.It's not just me saying that."The MVP of the Finals is gonna be Karl-Anthony Towns. That man earned his flowers," Charles Barkley said on Inside the NBA Friday night. That nod to Towns is with all due respect to Jalen Brunson, who has lived up to the Captain Clutch nickname in two straight games. It's with all due respect to Mikal Bridges, who has played his best basketball in the Finals.Without Towns playing at this level, New York is down 0-2 in this series.KAT DIME What a pass from under the basket in Game 2! pic.twitter.com/b5epEnwS4J— NBA (@NBA) June 6, 2026Towns scored a team-high 21 points with 13 rebounds on Friday night, but his counting stats don't do his impact in this series justice. His physical defense on Wembanyama has kept the Spurs star off balance and in relative check for most of the first two games. On the other end of the court, Towns is a matchup nightmare because he can bully his way to the rim for a bucket or knock down a jumper. His threat as a 3-point shooter who must be accounted for has pulled Wemby out of the paint — opening the path for Knicks drives and offensive rebounds in a way the Thunder or no other team has been able to against the Spurs."He's been great. I think he's been pretty phenomenal on both sides of the ball," Jalen Brunson said of Towns' effort. "The things he's been able to do throughout this entire playoffs but obviously here now, he's been great..."Then Brunson threw out the line that defines these Knicks this postseason:"But we need more.""I think he's made some shots and he's a really good player..." Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. "He played two good games. We have to make it tougher on him. We've had some coverage breakdowns."Towns’ Journey wasn’t smoothThe Timberwolves traded Towns to New York in a deal that was far more about Minnesota's salary cap outlook than production on the court. However, there also were persistent questions around the Timberwolves about whether Towns was enough alongside Anthony Edwards to get the team over the hump. It's because of those years that Towns relates to what the Spurs are going through in these Finals, but the hard lessons he learned then are paying off now."I have been on the other side where you're a young team and you're trying to do a lot to win the game, and I think that for us, we keep leaning on experience and we keep leaning on the word 'execution,'" Towns said.Towns' play in New York has not been consistent over the past two years — there are times it has felt he is not doing enough, and there are times when it feels like he is trying to do too much. Rarely has it felt like a natural fit.Mike Brown seemed like a coach who could change that — his style of play should have been a hand-in-glove fit with Towns. It was not. Or at least not instantly. It took most of the season, and even into the playoffs, for Towns and Brown to find a balance in the offense that worked for both."I came in with a great plan. Maybe the plan doesn't work. Who adjusts, him or me? Me. I adjust," Brown said of how the season went with Towns. "The adjustment's not enough. Every once in a while we're not on the same page. We talk about it. We talk about it. I adjust again. A little bit better. He's feeling good. We talk about it. We talk -- maybe we take a couple of steps backwards because what I did, he doesn't like, which is fine...."And we finally got to a point where he was comfortable, I was comfortable, Jalen (Brunson) was comfortable, OG (Anunoby) was comfortable, Mikal (Bridges) was comfortable, and to me that's what the regular season is about. The regular season is about finding your way so you can prepare for this time of the year."Towns looks prepared. He looks like a Finals MVP. And, in what matters most to Towns himself, he looks like an NBA champion.0 Comments 0 Shares 44 Views 0 Reviews
