Preview: Can Haiti spring a surprise in first World Cup for 52 years?
Preview: Can Haiti spring a surprise in first World Cup for 52 years?Haiti return to the World Cup finals after 52 years and face the mammoth task of escaping a tough Group C.The Caribbean nation, ranked 81st in the world, have been drawn alongside a resurgent Scotland as well as the competition’s all-time leading winners Brazil and AFCON finalists Morocco after they topped their CONCACAF qualifying group.Les Grenadiers finished second in their second round qualifying group before topping the third round group, ahead of 2014 quarter finalists Costa Rica, despite playing their matches outside the country due to political instability. The ongoing conflict between the Haiti administration and anti-government forces and in the capital, Port-au-Princes, which first began in 2020, has meant that the US have suspended visas for the country’s nationals. But their diaspora residing in the host nation will be able to attend to witness their country’s historic return and focus on the football that gets underway from the 11th of June.Duckens Nazon led the way with six goals in qualifying, scoring a sensational hat trick against Costa Rica. As Haiti’s all-time leading marksman, he represents their best hope of pulling off the improbable in reaching the knockout stages.Much like his country, Nazon has had his own extraordinary journey to this summer’s tournament. The ex-Coventry and St. Mirren forward plays for Iranian side Esteghlal avoided getting caught amidst the current conflict in the Middle East.Wolves winger Jean-Ricner Bellegarde and Sunderland’s Wilson Isidor are also expected to feature prominently, having both chosen to represent the Central Americans over their birth nation France.Isidor in particular is likely to provide a big boost to Les Bicolores hopes, having shone for the Black Cats as they qualified for the Europa League and achieved continental football for the first time in over five decades.Sébastien Migné’s men may also benefit from the hot weather in North America, with the country also enjoying a humid, tropical climate that sees average temperatures reach 30 degrees celcius in the summer months.Les Rouge en Bleu have previously gone toe-to-toe with bigger nations despite their underdog status, having drawn with Italy in 2013 and narrowly lost to then-World Champions Spain that same year.A fairytale run to the Gold Cup semi finals in 2019, which included a dramatic 3-2 victory over Canada in the quarters, shows the Caribbean’s also have tournament pedigree. However, they could be some concern over the heavy 5-1 defeat to fellow World Cup debutants Curaçao early on in qualifying, but will nonetheless revel in a first finals tournament in over half a century.Having started preparations in the best possible way with a thumping 4-0 victory over New Zealand, the real work for Migné and co. will begin on the 14th of JUne at 02:00 (GMT) when they kick off their campaign against Scotland.

George Russell details viral Fiat Jolly breakdown in Monaco tunnel
Motorsport photoMercedes Formula 1 driver George Russell has detailed the moment he was forced to push his classic Fiat Jolly around the streets of Monte Carlo after it broke down. After footage of the British driver and his partner, Carmen Montero Mundt, pushing the Jolly went viral on social media, he recounted the moment with the Mercedes F1 media team. "That was a little while ago, actually, but it broke down in a tunnel while I was in flip-flops, and I had to push it out of the tunnel," Russell explained.Far removed from the complex hybrid systems of his Mercedes F1 machinery, Russell attempted to bump start it, but he was unsuccessful."Roll it down the hill, try bump starting it," he said. "Didn't work, so a little breakdown. Little incident."It wasn't all terrible for the 28-year-old though, as he had his Mercedes G Wagon at hand to tow the doorless beach car back home."Had to tow it back with the G Wagon," he added. "Not a bad backup."Russell has had a mixed start to the 2026 F1 season. After winning the Australian Grand Prix and the Chinese sprint race, he has watched his teenage team-mate Kimi Antonelli build a commanding championship lead. While Russell dealt with car issues at the Chinese Grand Prix, had his strategy compromised by the safety car at the Japanese Grand Prix, and retired from the lead at the Canadian Grand Prix, Antonelli has won four consecutive grands prix since the Chinese sprint race.Heading into the sixth round of the season, the Monaco Grand Prix, Antonelli now leads Russell by 43 points, with 131 points in total. Russell sits second with 88 points and Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton follow in third and fourth with 75 and 72 points, respectively. An Israeli airstrike on southern Lebanon kills Lebanese troops days after ceasefire
A view of Beaufort Castle, southeast Lebanon, Friday, June 5, 2026. (AP Photo/Hussein Malla)2026-06-06T08:09:05Z BEIRUT (AP) — An Israeli airstrike on southern Lebanon Saturday killed several members of the Lebanese military, including a senior officer, the Lebanese army said, days after the two sides reached a new ceasefire deal. The airstrike on the road linking the city of Nabatiyeh with the town of Marjayoun occurred in the morning. The army did not give further details or release the names or ranks of the troops killed.Local TV stations reported that two members of the military were killed in the airstrike, including a brigadier general. The latest declared ceasefire came about through U.S.-brokered talks between Israel and Lebanon’s government, which accuses Hezbollah of dragging the country into war and had made efforts to disarm it before the latest hostilities. The Lebanese militant group has refused the truce. The war began on March 2 when Hezbollah fired rockets at northern Israel, two days after Israel and the U.S. began their attacks on Iran. Israel has since launched a ground invasion of Lebanon and carried out wide attacks that have displaced more than 1 million people. Israeli attacks have since killed and wounded dozens of Lebanese soldiers. Israeli troops have seized around a fifth of Lebanon, pushing further into the country’s south than at any time since the end of Israel’s 1982-2000 occupation.More than 3,500 people have been killed in Lebanon since the war began. The fighting has killed at least 29 Israeli soldiers and three civilians.

Air raid sirens in Bahrain as Iranian missiles and drones head for Gulf neighbors
People gather on paddleboards in shallow water as cargo and service vessels are anchored in the Strait of Hormuz off Bandar Abbas, Iran, Monday, June 1, 2026. (Amirhosein Khorgooi/ISNA via AP)2026-06-06T08:10:26Z CAIRO (AP) — Bahrain’s government said Saturday that Iran fired ballistic missiles and drones towards it and Kuwait. The foreign ministry said they had been intercepted and called on Iran to immediately cease attacks on its Gulf neighbors. The statement came hours after the U.S. military said it shot down Iranian ballistic missiles and drones launched toward the Strait of Hormuz and Gulf Arab allies on Friday, while striking some of the Islamic Republic’s coastal surveillance radar sites in response, an exchange of fire that further frayed a shaky ceasefire with Tehran. The exchange of strikes comes as the Trump administration ramps up pressure on Iran to make a deal to end the conflict.U.S. Central Command said on social media Friday night that Iran fired seven ballistic missiles toward Kuwait and Bahrain, with U.S. forces intercepting six of the missiles and a seventh failing to reach its target. The military said there were no reports of harm to U.S. personnel. The ballistic missiles were fired after the U.S. earlier in the day shot down four Iranian drones that were launched toward the Strait of Hormuz. “The attack drones posed an immediate threat to regional maritime traffic,” U.S. Central Command said on social media. Kuwait’s military said forces were intercepting missiles and drones attacking the country, while Bahrain activated air raid sirens and told residents to move to the nearest safe location and follow official instructions. Read More Iran’s Revolutionary Guard said it targeted the Ali Al Salem airbase, which hosts U.S. forces in Kuwait, and the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet in the tiny Gulf island nation of Bahrain, according to the state-run IRNA news agency. The U.S. military is enforcing a blockade on Iranian ports in response to Tehran’s chokehold on the crucial corridor for global oil and natural gas shipments, which has sent energy prices spiking and posed political problems for President Donald Trump’s Republican Party ahead of the midterm congressional elections.U.S. Central Command said it hit the radar sites, including an island in the strait, “to defend against further attacks.” Trump promises a quick end to US-Iran conflictIt was the latest in back-and-forth attacks that have strained the tenuous ceasefire in the war and efforts to reach a deal to extend that truce. Earlier this week, Iranian drones heavily damaged a passenger terminal at Kuwait’s main airport, killing one person, wounding dozens and briefly closing the airfield.Despite the attacks raising new concerns that the ceasefire could collapse, Trump told reporters Friday that “the situation with Iran seems to be going quite well.”“We’re going to come out of Iran very quickly and it’s going to be very strong one way or the other, whether it’s a piece of paper or the very tough way,” Trump said at an event with farmers in Wisconsin. “The very tough way is maybe the easier way, but we’re going to come out, and your fertilizer prices are going to go way down, just like they were four months ago.” Sign up for Morning Wire: Our flagship newsletter breaks down the biggest headlines of the day. Trump increasingly appears to be boxed in on a conflict that has settled into a holding pattern. U.S. and Iranian negotiators reached a tentative agreement a week ago to extend the ceasefire by 60 days and start a new round of talks on Iran’s nuclear program. But Trump has called for unspecified changes and Iranian officials have shown no public signs of signing off on the deal. Asked on Friday why it was taking so long, Trump told NBC’s “Meet the Press” it was because “it’s a very hard thing for them.”“There are things they never thought they’d be doing that they’re going to have to do. They’ve got no choice, and it takes a little while,” he said in the interview.Trump said the Iranians still have 21% to 22% of their missiles. Israeli strikes on Lebanon continueHis administration also has touted the latest ceasefire agreed to this week by the Lebanese government and Israel after U.S.-brokered talks in Washington. However, the Iranian-backed Hezbollah militant group has rejected the agreement and new attacks have put it at further risk. The Israeli military on Friday struck multiple parts of southern Lebanon and issued evacuation warnings for nine villages, including one that has sheltered thousands of people displaced by the fighting. The strikes killed nine people in six locations in southern Lebanon, the state news agency reported. The Israeli military said two soldiers were wounded, one severely, in an encounter Friday with militants in southern Lebanon. The fighting in Lebanon, where Israeli forces have seized large swaths of the south, also threatens efforts to end the Iran war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz because Iran has demanded that any lasting truce extend to Lebanon. Besides the drone interception in the Strait of Hormuz, the U.S. military said earlier Friday that its forces boarded a sanctioned oil tanker linked to Iran in the Indian Ocean as the United States seeks to prevent Iran from profiting off its oil and other goods. The U.S. also targeted Iran’s energy sector with new sanctions on a group of people, firms and tankers.___Price reported from Bridgewater, NJ. 5 O’Clock Club: Can Daniels learn to better protect himself from injury in his 3rd NFL season?
It’s 5 o’clock somewhere…The 5 O’Clock ClubThe 5 o’clock club is published from time to time during the season, and aims to provide a forum for reader-driven discussion at a time of day when there isn’t much NFL news being published. Feel free to introduce topics that interest you in the comments below.CLICK HERE to see the full 5 o’clock club archiveTucking and running with the ball is a feature, not a bug, of Jayden Daniels’ game. The Commanders quarterback is a gifted and shifty runner who set the NFL rookie record for the most rushing yards by a quarterback in a single season, finishing 2024 with 891 rushing yards. Interestingly, he surpassed the previous record of 815 yards set by Robert Griffin III in 2012.Unfortunately, he shared another career distinction with RG3 — having it get derailed by injury, at least temporarily. Daniels suffered multiple injuries in 2025 and ended up playing in only seven games and only four of them from start to finish.Jayden suffered three key injuries in his sophomore year in the NFL. The first occurred in Week 2 — a knee sprain that sidelined him for two weeks. That was followed by a hamstring injury around Week 7 that caused him to miss another game. The final blow came in two stages; the first occurred in Week 9 against the Seattle Seahawks when he suffered a dislocated elbow; he managed to return to the field in Week 14, but fell hard on that same elbow while chasing down a defender who had made interception, re-aggravating the injury and ending his season. The knee sprain was caused by a scramble up the middle on Thursday Night Football during a Week 2 loss to the Green Bay Packers. He landed awkwardly as he was tackled, which ultimately resulted in a low-grade knee sprain. Despite the injury, he actually finished playing out the game before an MRI the following Monday confirmed the sprain. His hamstring injury was caused by a sack-and-fumble play early in the third quarter against the Dallas Cowboys when Dallas linebacker Shemar James rushed up the middle on a first-and-10. Daniels pulled the ball down to avoid throwing an interception, but as James hit him and pulled him backward, Daniels lunged forward to protect the ball (which he fumbled) and, on the sack, James landed awkwardly on the back of Jayden’s leg.Daniels’ elbow dislocation was caused by a scramble and sack play late in the fourth quarter against the Seattle Seahawks when Daniels took a snap on second-and-goal and scrambled to his right. Seattle linebacker Drake Thomas tracked him down and sacked him at the 4-yard line. As Daniels was slung to the ground, he instinctively planted his left hand (his non-throwing arm) to break the fall.[I’m not putting the video here because I can’t watch it myself; if you want to see film of the elbow dislocation, you can click here]His four injury events in 2025 were the result of (No. 1) scrambling on a called pass play; (No. 2) a sack on a called pass play; (No. 3) a scramble and a sack on a called pass play; and (No. 4) an awkward fall while moving towards a ball-carrier following an interception on a pass play. What’s noticeable about that list is that none of the four 2025 injury events happened on called runs; rather, they happened on scrambles, sacks and turnovers. Many fans tend to diminish the one significant injury JD5 is known to have sustained in 2024 because he didn’t miss any games, but he broke one or more ribs on an awkward tackle from behind at the end of a 46-yard run off of a zone read on the first play of the game.Jayden Daniels takes off for 47 yards on his first play!📺: #CARvsWAS on CBS/Paramount+📱: https://t.co/waVpO8ZBqGpic.twitter.com/oIbbc17aDl— NFL (@NFL) October 20, 2024In just two seasons, then, Daniels is known to have gotten injured at least four times while playing quarterback — ribs, knee, hamstring, elbow — and the word that pops up most commonly in the descriptions of those four plays is “awkward.” In all of them, Jayden was on the move when he got hit legally by a defender (or two) but ended up with his body twisting awkwardly or with his own body weight or that of a defensive player creating stress on joints, muscles or bones.Daniels’ mobility is part of what makes him a great player, but that mobility comes with a risk premium, as we’ve learned from seeing the former No. 2 overall pick injured or re-injured at least five times in 24 regular season games. The front office has done a lot to improve the offensive line and running backs that protect Jayden on passing plays. Head coach Dan Quinn made a major change by hiring David Blough to replace Kliff Kingsbury as the offensive coordinator with a mandate to change the style of offense — presumably to, at least in part, protect the team’s franchise quarterback. But Jayden will still get sacked. He will still run the ball — both on called running plays and when pass protection breaks down. Only so much can be done by others to protect him; Jayden has to be better at protecting himself from injury.POLLS

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi holds the record for the most sixes in a single IPL season after he struck 72 in the 2026 campaign [Getty Images]Teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has received his first international call-up by making the India T20 squad to tour England and Ireland. If he plays, the 15-year-old would break Sachin Tendulkar's record as the youngest man to play for India. Tendulkar was 16 years and 205 days when he played a one-day international against Pakistan in 1989.The call-up comes on the back of Sooryavanshi 's stunning Indian Premier League campaign, where he scored 776 runs in 16 innings at a strike rate of 237.30 for the Rajasthan Royals. The left-hander was named the IPL's Most Valuable Player and also picked up the emerging player award and the Orange Cap, given to the highest run-scorer.He scored 175 in February as India beat England in the final of the Under-19 World Cup.India play two matches in Ireland later this month, then five T20s in England in July.Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer has been named as the new captain, replacing Suryakumar Yadav, who has been dropped from the squad.Yadav led India to victory at the T20 World Cup in March.Get cricket news sent straight to your phone

Crazy Arne Slot accusations: He ruined Liverpool's £100m star
Crazy Arne Slot accusations: He ruined Liverpool's £100m starThere have been some major accusations against Arne Slot. It seems he held back Liverpool's £100m star.Sportbild in Germany have made some claims against Arne Slot and his attitude towards players as Liverpool head coach. Slot was sacked last weekend, of course, after overseeing a brutally disappointing campaign. Now, one of the reasons that campaign was so disappointing was that Liverpool spent over £400m and went backwards. The Dutchman just didn't get the most out of any of the Reds' signings.Well, if the Sportbild report is accurate, we know why."He needled summer signings with questions like, 'Did you win the Premier League?'," they claim.“When analysing players with Bundesliga experience, he made comments along the lines of 'you can play like that in Germany'".Now, those comments apply to one player in particular: Florian Wirtz. Wirtz arrived for £100m last summer as the future of Liverpool's attack - essentially the player to inherit the responsibility post-Mohamed Salah. But that was never going to happen if such a player had 'did you win the Premier League?' asked of them. Well, of course they didn't - but Wirtz is someone who thrived in Germany and won the Bundesliga with a heavily out-matched Bayer Leverkusen side.As the best player in the country, no less.Similarly, signing someone for £100m and then questioning whether they can even transfer those skills from Germany to England is nonsense. Even away from Liverpool, both Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland made instant impacts after leaving the Bundesliga for the Premier League. So what is the point in signing such a talented player if you're then going to question the way they do things? It's simply a waste of £100m. In fact, it's no wonder that someone like Wirtz would suffer if he's being told to play differently to what earned him the transfer in the first place. If this is truly how Slot behaved with new signings, thank God he's gone. Liverpool never stood a chance with this attitude.Arne Slot: Situation SummaryLiverpool Tenure and DepartureAs of 5 June 2026, Arne Slot’s tenure as Liverpool head coach has officially concluded. The 47-year-old Dutchman was sacked by the club on 30 May 2026, following a turbulent campaign that saw the Reds finish fifth in the Premier League. Despite delivering the club's 20th league title in his debut 2024/25 season, a disjointed title defence featuring 19 defeats across all competitions led Fenway Sports Group to deem a change in direction necessary. Slot departed Anfield with the club's formal gratitude, having been acknowledged for his leadership and humanity during a period overshadowed by the tragic death of Diogo Jota.Post-Anfield StatusFollowing his dismissal, Slot has remained in the United Kingdom to finalise his departure arrangements and discuss the terms of his severance with Liverpool officials. While he has received widespread praise for his tactical impact in his first season, the swiftness of his exit has marked a defining moment in the club's recent history. As of now, he is unattached and currently weighing his next steps in coaching, with his reputation remaining robust across European football despite the difficult end to his time at Merseyside.

Is Georgia baseball star Tre Phelps playing?
The Georgia Bulldogs will be without one of their star players for Game 1 of the Athens Super Regional against the Mississippi State Bulldogs. Georgia third baseman Tre Phelps was ejected from Georgia's regional final win over the Liberty Flames and won't be able to play in Game 1 against Mississippi State. Phelps has been elite at the plate this season. The junior is an everyday starter for UGA and has served as Georgia's lead-off hitter in the Bulldogs' most recent NCAA Tournament games. Phelps has 22 home runs, 69 RBIs and is batting .384. Against Mississippi State this season, Phelps has six hits, four RBIs and one home run in four games.Phelps' ejection was very controversial. He hit a home run to finally give Georgia the lead against Liberty. However, he celebrated in front of Liberty's dugout and that resulted in his ejection. Georgia baseball manager Wes Johnson clarified that Phelps "was waving at his family" that was sitting above the Liberty dugout. Johnson argued with the umpires regarding the ejection and was ejected himself. However, Johnson will be able to coach in Game 1 against Mississippi State. Is Georgia baseball star Tre Phelps playing today?Georgia third baseman Tre Phelps is out for Game 1 of the Athens Super Regional against Mississippi State. Georgia will try to win without Phelps as the Bulldogs play at 11 a.m. ET (ESPN) on Saturday, June 6. Phelps is able to return for Game 2, where Georgia could be facing elimination if they lose Game 1. What Wes Johnson said on Phelps' ejection"As far as the Tre (Phelps) situation, for the record, Tre's family was sitting up in the stands," Georgia coach Wes Johnson said after the Liberty game. "Tre was waving at his family. The umpires, whatever, you know I'm not an umpire, they thought he was talking to their dugout. Tre got ejected. Tre will miss Game 1 of the super regional. I also was ejected. I have no further penalties. That's the only statements that we can give and the NCAA will not be making a statement."This article originally appeared on UGA Wire: Is Georgia baseball star Tre Phelps playing vs. Mississippi State?

2026 World Cup Group B preview, predictions
Group B at the World Cup presents hope.Canada, hosting the men's tournament for the first time alongside the U.S. and Mexico, hopes to have its best showing in history, while Bosnia and Herzegovina is riding high and hopeful after knocking Italy out of qualification to secure its place. For Switzerland, they hope to finish first in the group, occupying the rare position of being the "big boy" among the four teams. Qatar hopes to turn things around after securing a spot in Asian qualification, following a disappointing showing on home soil in 2022.Here is a breakdown of Group B.World Cup Group B teamsCanadaSoccer is on the rise in Canada, and manager Jesse Marsch hopes to show it not just by getting the first-ever point at a men's World Cup for Canada, but getting out of the group for the first time. The rise in player quality makes that goal seem reasonable, even if their history doesn't back it up.Key players: Alphonso Davies, Jonathan David, Stephen EustaquioBosnia and HerzegovinaBosnia certainly took the long road to World Cup qualification, earning a place in March's playoff and then winning penalty shootouts in both games, notably spoiling what many thought would be a Canada-Italy opener by putting the Italians out of the tournament. Now that they're here, they'll look to show they belong. Key players: Edin Džeko, Sead Kolašinac, Esmir BajraktarevićQatarQatar did just enough to qualify, though it had the benefit of hosting the fourth round on home soil. Since then, Qatar has struggled, failing to win its next five matches and coming into the tournament with a lot of questions about a group that also stalled in the group stage on home soil last time around.Key players: Almoez Ali, Abdulaziz Hatem, Hassan Al-HaydosSwitzerlandSwitzerland came through its World Cup qualification group undefeated, perhaps something it should get more credit for after Kosovo impressed in the playoff and Sweden eventually earned a place in the tournament. 😠 Power struggle at Real? Adviser to star boss fed up
😠 Power struggle at Real? Adviser to star boss fed upThe election campaign for the presidency at Real Madrid is slowly taking on almost absurd proportions. Incumbent Florentino Pérez has been promising for quite some time now that, if he wins tomorrow’s snap election on Sunday, he will not only bring in Mourinho as coach but also get mega-deals over the line. When it comes to huge promises, challenger Riquelme can definitely keep up with him. He wants to bring in not just one but two superstars from Manchester: Haaland and Rodri. But that’s not all: he would also want to make a real blockbuster move on the bench – provided he wins the election.Enrique Riquelme announced that he wants to begin talks as early as Monday with none other than Jürgen Klopp in order to “personally present the sporting project to him and express our desire for him to usher in a new era for Real Madrid from the bench.”But of course, this isn’t exactly news to anyone that announcing big plans can be quite promising when it comes to picking up votes. The only problem is when the people concerned are absolutely not on board.Klopps’s advisor immediately threw a major wrench into the plans of the Royal club’s presidential candidate. That is according to ‘Sky’. Marc Kosicke even reacted quite sharply to the announcement: “It’s annoying! Jürgen Klopp is happy in his role at Red Bull and has no ambitions to work as a coach at a club.”Klopp’s advisor is not the only one who seems to be getting fed up with the election chaos and the constant name-dropping by the two candidates. People close to Haaland and Manchester City have also reportedly grown tired of the big talk and grand announcements. What do you think about the power struggle at Los Blancos? Is it right to shake things up a bit now, or should this be handled more elegantly? Feel free to write your thoughts in the comments! This article was translated into English by Artificial Intelligence. You can read the original version in 🇩🇪 here.

England take on Kiwis in first American World Cup warm-up run-out
England take on Kiwis in first American World Cup warm-up run-outTonight, Thomas Tuchel launches his "comfortable being uncomfortable" era in Florida, dragging a heavily fatigued England squad into the humid, 32°C cauldron of Tampa’s Raymond James Stadium (complete with a giant replica pirate ship behind one of the goals, just in case anyone forgot we are in America) to do battle with New Zealand. If you were hoping for a classic, high-octane footballing masterclass to kick off the summer, prepare to be fiercely underwhelmed. This match has all the hallmarks of a glorified, heat-soaked training session masquerading as an international event.Feel The HeatThe FA has loudly branded this Florida camp a "data-driven acclimatisation process." Does this mean they are intentionally baking the players? Coming off a bruising domestic season, the squad is being dropped into a swampy furnace to see who collapses first.Don’t look for tactical epiphanies or fluid passing sequences tonight; look for how many times Jude Bellingham or Harry Kane have to chug an electrolyte gel just to keep from cramping. No pain, No gainFriendly matches against teams ranked comfortably outside the world's elite (New Zealand sit well down the Fifa rankings) serve exactly one purpose for international managers: absolute immunity. If England win 5-0, it was a "professional, clinical workout against a structured block."If they stutter to a turgid, error-strewn 1-0 win or — heaven forbid — a draw, Tuchel can simply shrug and blame the humidity, hard NFL turf, and "heavy legs" from training. It is a win-win for the dugout, and a lose-win for anyone paying to watch it.Thankfully, or mercifully, the national 'moment' willl be broadcast free to air on ITV, starting in at 8:15 pm BST. We might get to see Jordan Pickford in goal... but Tuchel surely has a firm picture of what his star England goalie can do for him and may well be tempted to check instead what else he has on the bench. This ain't no egg-ball contestIn sharp contrast to a long and storied history of rugby matches between England and the All-Blacks in Rugby Union, this is only the third time these two nations have ever met to play this type of football. The previous two encounters happened over a single week in June 1991, when Graham Taylor took England on a post-season tour of New Zealand. Former brief Everton hero Gary Lineker scrambled a late 1-0 win in the first game, and Stuart Pearce helped secure a 2-0 win in the second. If tonight’s match matches the sheer, uninspired leg-readiness of those 1991 post-season exhibitions, we are in for a long 90 minutes.Expect a slow, agonisingly deliberate pace, approximately 14 substitutions at halftime to completely kill whatever rhythm existed, and a post-match press conference heavily featuring the words “loading,”“metrics,” and “conditions.”Gunners no showIncredibly, there will be no Declan Rice or Bukayo Saka, no Eberechi Eze, no Noni Madueke. The stars of the newly crowned Premier League Champions have been granted an extended rest period because they were busy tasting defeat in Europe's showpiece final just a few days ago. While the rest of the squad has been baking in Florida, they were cooling their heels...But in a piece of typical, modern scheduling comedy, they are actually scheduled to land in Florida and link up with the squad today — meaning they will likely be watching this game from the air or a hotel suite, entirely unavailable to feel the Bermuda grass beneath their feet.England vs New ZealandLive coverage on ITV from 8:15 pm BST after team news at 8:00 pm.Note: the following content is not moderated or vetted by the site owners at the time of submission. Republic of Ireland rescue draw against Canada
Chiedozie Ogbene netted a second half equaliser for the Republic of Ireland in a 1-1 draw against Canada in Montreal. The World Cup co-hosts took the lead through a Jake O'Brien own goal, but were pegged back by Ogbene who was quickest to react when Troy Parrott's penalty was saved as it finished honours even in the international friendly.Republic of Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson made six changes to the side that beat Qatar at the Aviva Stadium last week, while handing a first cap to four players including Bohemians captain Dawson Devoy who became the first League of Ireland player to earn a senior cap since Jack Byrne in 2020.St Patrick's Athletic midfielder Kian Leavy and Shamrock Rovers' winger Adam Brennan were introduced off the bench alongside Portugal-based Joe Hodge, while Jaden Umeh and Corrie Ndaba made their first senior starts. The Republic of Ireland made a bright start at Saputo Stadium with an early sight of goal for Devoy who was put through but couldn't turn home from an angle with Canada goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau as the home side hacked clear.Canada had began brightly also with Mark Travers forced to save from Tajon Buchanan who was a threat on the right wing. The hosts continued to apply pressure and were rewarded in the 23rd minute as Stephen Eustaquio's corner was flicked on with the ball coming off O'Brien and into the net to give Jesse Marsch's side the lead.Canada maintained the pressure with O'Brien making a vital block on Liam Millar but had to be satisfied with the one-goal advantage at the half. They picked up where they left off in the second period but couldn't double their advantage. However, against the run of play on the hour mark, the Republic of Ireland won a penalty when Cyle Larin was penalised for a high boot on Irish substitute Jamie McGrath inside the penalty area.Parrott's well-struck effort was brilliantly saved by Crepeau but Ogbene turned home the rebound for his fifth international goal.Larin could have made amends 10 minutes later but was thwarted by the outstretched boot of Mark Travers. The visitors had an opportunity of their own when substitute Mason Melia was denied by Crepeau with seven minutes remaining, but it would finish honours even.Canada will now look forward to their World Cup opener against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto on Friday, while the Republic of Ireland's attention now turns to the Nations League in September.

The pope is in secularized, polarized Spain, where the Catholic Church has a complex legacy
Pope Leo XIV is welcomed by Spain's King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia upon his arrival at Adolfo Suarez Madrid-Barajas International Airport in Madrid, Saturday, June 6, 2026, marking the start of his seven-day apostolic journey to mainland Spain and the Canary Islands. (AP Photo/Alessandra Tarantino)2026-06-06T04:17:36Z MADRID (AP) — Pope Leo XIV’s trip to Spain will bring the American pontiff to a traditional center of European Christianity, where the Catholic Church has a complex legacy and the Socialist-led government is in the midst of a political crisis.Leo’s weeklong visit begins Saturday in Madrid, where upon landing he was greeted by the country’s Catholic monarchs, King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia, and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. His first day ends with a prayer vigil with young people, many of whom will be witnessing their first pope on Spanish soil.In a sign that the clergy sexual abuse crisis continues to overshadow papal trips, the Vatican confirmed late Friday that Leo would meet with survivors during his visit. The Spanish Catholic hierarchy is belatedly reckoning with decades of abuse and cover-up in the once-staunchly Catholic country. The visit, the first by a pope in 15 years, signals Leo is returning papal attention to Europe and its Christian roots. Pope Francis largely stayed away from the traditional centers of European Christianity in favor of smaller Catholic communities farther away. But Leo will find a legislature that is highly polarized, with the ruling Socialist party hammered by a series of corruption scandals. Conservative parties including the Popular Party and far-right Vox have called for Sánchez to step down before elections in 2027, and have roundly criticized his government’s migration policies. Leo’s face has been plastered across subway cars, billboards and ads in metro stations in the Spanish capital. On display at some souvenir shops are posters and magnets of Leo and other papal knick-knacks. Bakeries are selling limited edition pope cakes and pastries.Despite some expected protests of Leo’s visit — the trip is costing some 15 million euros ($17.2 million) — his speech to Parliament in particular is something of a milestone for Spain’s Catholic Church. Shaped by the anticlerical violence of the country’s 1936-1939 civil war, more recently, it has dealt with a credibility crisis over revelations of decades of clergy abuse and cover-up. While much of Europe has secularized in recent decades, Spain stands out after it underwent a religious crisis following the 1975 death of Gen. Francisco Franco. A staunch Catholic, Franco viewed his reign as something of a religious crusade against the anticlerical anarchist, leftist and secular tendencies in Spain. As Spain transitioned to a democracy, the percentage of Spaniards who declared themselves Catholics fell from 90% in the 1970s to just 55% in 2025, according to polling data collected by Spain’s state opinion agency. Of that group only 19% say they regularly attend Mass. And yet there are signs of renewed interest in all forms of spirituality, Christian and otherwise, especially among young Spaniards, said sociologist Narciso Michavila Núñez, president of the GAD3 consulting firm that polls young people about their faith, among other things. Michavila and others cite the popularity of Spanish pop star Rosalía’s new hit album “Lux,” which is overtly spiritual.“The truth from a common view is not that God is in fashion. What is new in this moment, in this visit of the pope, is that God in the Spanish society is not a tattoo anymore,” he said. A Mass at Sagrada Familia and migration messageAfter Madrid, the other highlights of the trip include Leo’s visit midweek to Barcelona, where he will celebrate Mass in the Sagrada Familia basilica on the centenary of the death of its famed architect, Antoni Gaudí. While Catalonia’s beloved native son is on the path to possible sainthood, no announcements on his canonization are expected during the trip, Bruni said.During the June 10 Mass, Leo will inaugurate the soaring central spire of the basilica, the Tower of Jesus Christ, which when it was moved into place earlier this year made Sagrada Familia the tallest church in the world.Leo will also fulfill a wish of Francis by ending his visit with a two-day stop in the Canary Islands, the Spanish archipelago that is closer to Africa than the Iberian peninsula and a key destination for migrants leaving West Africa. He is expected to toss a wreath of flowers into the sea, in memory of migrants killed during the treacherous Atlantic crossing. He’ll do so from the port in Las Palmas that in 2020 earned the nickname the “Dock of Shame” because thousands of migrants were forced to sleep in the open for weeks on end during a spike in arrivals.Francis had made reaching out to migrants and refugees a hallmark of his papacy and Leo has followed suit by demanding dignified treatment of migrants, especially in his native United States. “For those of us who are immigrants and find ourselves in this situation of having family far away, someone like the Pope — who is an important figure for the entire world — coming here is truly something that makes me say ‘wow,’” said Constantina Nchama, an immigrant from Equatorial Guinea in Madrid days before Leo’s visit.“It’s something that happens once in a lifetime,” she said. “I’m very, very excited about that, truly.”Spain’s Socialist-led government has bucked a general trend in Europe and the U.S. by announcing it will grant legal status to potentially hundreds of thousands of immigrants living and working in the country without authorization. Sánchez has highlighted the benefits of legal migration to the country’s economy with an aging workforce and low birthrate. ASK IRA: Are Heat experiencing paralysis by Giannis analysis?
Q: Ira, how many people do the Heat have in their front office? Shouldn’t they be looking at other things besides this Hail Mary for Giannis Antetokounmpo? One player doesn’t make a team. – Osten.A: There are plenty with plenty currently filling their plates, including Adam Simon and the scouting staff working the draft and checking in on overseas events. And there are plenty of Beautiful Mind salary-cap equations on Andy Elisburg’s dry-erase board. But you also have to start somewhere, with Giannis Antetokounmpo being the NBA’s “somewhere” of the moment. In order to possibly land Giannis, it likely would require much of the Heat resources, draft capital and otherwise. So you can’t also have those chips in play for other options, in case they are needed for Giannis. Look, at this point last year, no one thought the Heat would land Norman Powell for a bag of beans (with all due respect to Kyle Anderson and Kevin Love). What the Heat can’t allow is to be placed on hold the entire offseason, as was the case with the Summer of Damian Lillard. But Bucks ownership appears poised to move this month, so that presents plenty of time for a Heat alternate offseason runway, need be.Related Articles Submit your “Ask Ira” question here! Q: If Tyler Herro isn’t traded for Giannis Antetokounmpo, do you think he stays? – Sid.A: I would change that question to “if Tyler Herro isn’t traded,” since there could be potential other deals that would free the Heat from having to decide whether to extend Tyler. But there also is a world where the Heat hold on to Tyler at least through next season’s trade deadline, since they have precious few sizable contracts to deal, otherwise, especially if Andrew Wiggins opts out and Norman Powell leaves in free agency. What would be less likely is Tyler and Norman both returning. That simply did not work last season.Q: Ira, what if the Heat draft someone for the Bucks at No. 13 and Milwaukee then doesn’t want that player? – Edd.A: That’s not how it works. If the Heat trade No. 13 in a package for Giannis, then it is up to the Bucks to take on the player selected at that spot. That is why a Giannis trade could come down to draft night, if a certain player Milwaukee is targeting at No. 13 winds up not being there. But once you agree to have a team select for you, then the deal basically is done. To back out at that point would mean to never find another draft partner. (To clarify: The Heat, by NBA rule, must make a selection in this year’s first round, because of a future pick that has been dealt. The Heat then can flip the selected player immediately after he is drafted.)

Falcons make big investment in trenches in 2027 NFL mock draft
The Atlanta Falcons didn't have a first-round pick in this year's draft thanks to the trade up to get James Pearce Jr. the previous year. So, they had to wait until the middle of the second round to make a selection, which they used on A.J. Terrell's little brother Avieon out of Clemson.Terrell may turn out to be the one of the NFL's best slot defenders, but that's unlikely to make the kind of impact that a franchise left tackle or quarterback pick would - no matter how good he might be.In a recent 2027 NFL mock draft from Pro Football Network, Atlanta winds up with the sixth overall pick in the draft, which they use on Texas Longhorns offensive tackle Trevor Goosby."Surrendering just three sacks last season, Texas tackle Trevor Goosby has quickly emerged as one of the premier offensive line prospects in this class, currently sitting as the No. 2 tackle on PFSN’s 2027 NFL Draft Big Board. That level of production and upside could make him a serious option for Atlanta if the Falcons look to solidify the future of their offensive line. If Goosby can cut down on the holding penalties, he possesses all the traits teams look for in an elite blindside protector at the next level."Goosby (6-foot-7, 325 pounds) is coming off a strong 2025 season, having posted solid-to-great grades in 12 of 13 starts, with only his work against Kentucky (56.9) lagging behind. Here's the highlight reel.Goosby has played left tackle at Texas, which would put him on track to be the long-term successor for Jake Matthews once he retires.Linemen picks in the first round are almost never popular with fans, but sometimes it's necessary to make a big investment in the trenches like this to make sure your offensive line doesn't fall off over time. That being said, if Atlanta does wind up picking at No. 6 overall, the the Falcons should probably be looking to take a potential franchise quarterback. This article originally appeared on Falcons Wire: Texas OT Trevor Goosby lands in Atlanta with sixth overall pick

Nebraska hosting five-star tight end Ahmad Hudson this weekend
Nebraska football is hosting a surprise visitor this weekend. Class of 2027 five-star tight end and LSU commit, Ahmad Hudson, is in Lincoln this weekend for a visit.Hudson is currently ranked No. 16 nationally, the top tight end in his class, and the fourth overall player in his class from the state of Louisiana, according to the Rivals Industry Rankings. He initially committed to the Tigers on May 3, putting a halt to Nebraska’s pursuit. Now, it seems as though the Huskers may still very much be in play. This will certainly be interesting to follow over the next couple of months. The Huskers are still very much involved here. Hudson still wants to play basketball, and that could be a deciding factor in his recruitment. This recruitment could drag on a bit longer than anticipated, despite his initial commitment.OV Weekend 😤😤 #GBR@AntayviousEllis@Qb6Trae@s_kwilli32pic.twitter.com/oO97IEl57m— Ahmad Hudson (@AhmadHudson9) June 5, 2026Contact/Follow us @CornhuskersWire on X (formerly Twitter) and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Nebraska news, notes and opinions. This article originally appeared on Cornhuskers Wire: Nebraska football hosting five-star tight end Ahmad Hudson on campus

New mum Lee and Yin share lead at US Women's Open
Lee hit four birdies and a bogey in an even-par second round [Getty Images]US Women's Open second round leaderboard-4 A Lee (US), R Yin (Chn); -3 S-Y Kim (Kor), G Lopez (Mex), H Shibuno (Jap), H-J Yoo (Kor), I-G Chun (Kor), J Kupcho (US)Selected others: -2 N Korda (US); Even A Thitikul (Tha); +1 H Green (Aus); +3 C Hull (Eng); +4 L Woad (Eng); +6 M Rhodes (Eng); +8 B Law (Eng); +9 H-J Kim (US); +11 N Ong (Eng)Full leaderboardAlison Lee and Ruoning Yin lead the US Women's Open by a stroke on four-under-par at the midway point of the year's second major.Los Angeles native Lee, who missed all five majors in 2025 because she was on maternity leave, posted a three-under 68 at Riviera Country Club. She is playing on the USGA's deferred maternity leave exemption, a policy which gives a player who has earned a place in a USGA championship the option to defer her place.China's Yin carded a second successive 69 in a bogey-free round.First-round leader Jennifer Kupcho and Japan's Hinako Shibuno, winner of the 2019 British Open, are among a group of six players in joint-third on three-under.World number one Nelly Korda is one of four golfers at two-under, having shot up the leaderboard with a 67, the lowest round of the day.Lee, whose 13-month-old son Levi watched at the course with her partner, has finished in the top 10 twice in 44 major appearances."I feel like I just did a really good job at grinding these last couple of days," the 31-year-old said. "The front nine [in the first round] - I mean, if you told me in the front nine I would be leading going into Saturday I would have thought you were crazy because I missed a bunch of fairways and I missed a bunch of greens."It's so exciting. My first couple years on tour, [there was] probably a lot of pressure. I mean, my rookie year was 2015."Now to be able to play in front of friends and family is really special."Yin, whose sole major win came in 2023 at the PGA Championship, said: "I had a lot of stress today."It's US Open, it's meant to be tough. You can't really have a stress-free moment on the course until it's all done. "I think the stress and the pressure, it's also a privilege."After underperforming on the first day, American Korda held her nerve to shorten the gap on the leaders."I just tried to have a really easygoing attitude today," said Korda, who won the Chevron Championship in April."I was definitely going to leave it all out there and grind as much as I could, but I was not going to emphasize my mistakes too much and just kind of play relaxed golf. "That's when I play my best golf."England's Bronte Law, Mimi Rhodes and teenager Nellie Ong were among those to miss the cut alongside Swede Madelene Sagstrom, competing while seven months pregnant.Weeks after winning her second LPGA title in Cincinnati, England's rising star Lottie Woad sneaked through to the weekend after a birdie at the 16th moved her above the cut mark - one stroke behind compatriot Charley Hull.

Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.New York Knicks stars Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns had a moment while discussing their win in NBA Finals Game 2 against the San Antonio Spurs on Friday. The two stars led the Knicks to a 105-104 win, as the franchise is just two wins away from winning the NBA championship.During the press conference, Towns talked about Brunson's "national championship" to highlight the importance of unity. Without interrupting, Brunson gestured to reporters with two fingers that he doesn't have only one but two national titles in 2016 and 2018 with the Villanova Wildcats.Jalen wasn’t going to let that slide 🤣✌️Presented by Paze® pic.twitter.com/V9f815uR9Q— theScore (@theScore) June 6, 2026Meanwhile, Towns played for the Kentucky Wildcats in 2014-15, where their undefeated run was ended in the Final Four.MORE: Spurs face impossible NBA Finals task after Knicks seize 2-0 leadJalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns have Knicks on right side of historyThe NBA Finals Game 2 saw the Knicks winning the game despite being down by as many as 12 points at one point in the game. However, just like Game 1, they handled themselves well in the final two quarters to secure a result which historically confirms their chances of winning NBA championship.Brunson had 20 points, five rebounds, six assists and five steals. Meanwhile, the Knicks forward finished with 21 points and 13 rebounds. In order for the Knicks to lose the NBA title, the Spurs will need to rewrite history books, as no team in Finals history has ever been able to rally back from a 2-0 deficit after losing both opening games at home. Big question facing Colts offensive line unit heading into minicamp
Mandatory minicamp will take place for the Indianapolis Colts from June 9-11. This is often the last big milestone in the NFL offseason calendar before training camp arrives in late July.Through the first two weeks of OTA practices, we've gained some valuable insights into where things stand on the depth chart, along with who may be standing out early on, but questions at each position group remain, and that's normal at this time of the year. It won't be until training camp and the preseason take place that playing time and final roster decisions are made.So as part of our Colts' minicamp preview, let's highlight the one big question facing each position group. Next up is the offensive line. How does the right side of the offensive line hold up?The expected starters on the right side of the line are Matt Goncalves, who will be in his second season playing guard, and Jalen Travis, who will be entering his first season as a full-time starter.Goncalves held his own last season, making the transition from tackle to guard. Travis, meanwhile, took advantage of his late season opportunties to start, giving the Colts confidence that he can provide stability moving forward. That said, continued development and improved play from both are needed."We're going to bet on some development," GM Chris Ballard said in his pre-draft press conference, referencing Goncalves and Travis. Also on the roster is rookie Jalen Farmer, who could potentially push for playing time at guard. That said, the Colts remain very bullish about Goncalves heading into the upcoming season. In order for the Colts' offense to be at its best, the team needs a run game to lean on. During the second half of last season, moving the ball on the ground didn't always come easily for this unit. This article originally appeared on Colts Wire: Colts minicamp preview: Question facing offensive line unit

Braves' Chris Sale name drops Atlanta's versatile bullpen 'secret weapon' after strong start
Braves' Chris Sale name drops Atlanta's versatile bullpen 'secret weapon' after strong start originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Atlanta Braves are currently the best team in baseball with 43 wins after beating the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday. Atlanta has had several players step up in big roles throughout this season as they continue to battle injuries. One name that has been surprising this early in the season is Didier Fuentes, who is just 20 years old. Braves manager Walt Weiss has him coming out of the bullpen, and even though he is a starter, there is value in using him out of the pen.“He could be in the minor leagues developing as a starter. There would be some value there, too. But you know, you've heard me say that I do believe there's some value in your starters working out of the bullpen," Weiss said. "There's a lot of value to that. So, I think we're seeing that with Didi.”After Fuentes’ outing on Thursday, Chris Sale had nothing but praise for the young, electric right-hander.“His stuff is a lot of fun to watch. It’s pure electricity coming out of that right arm. A lot of confidence in him. I think moving forward he’s only doing himself a lot of favors, maybe even getting back into the rotation,” Sale said.Sale appeared on 680 The Fan on Friday, and he continued to rave about Fuentes. He mentioned that Fuentes has become the Braves’ secret bullpen weapon due to his versatility.“The versatility that Didi brings for that bullpen, he can throw one out and get the most important out of the game. He can cover three innings and bridge the gap to get it to Iggy. He's kind of that secret weapon no one's really talking about,” Sale said. The biggest issue for Fuentes as a starter was his control, but out of the bullpen he has been lights out. He is also flexible, as he can give the Braves multiple innings or just one when needed.Fuentes is young and has embraced his role, competing in whatever position gives the Braves the best chance to win. For Fuentes to be getting praise from veterans like Sale shows that his career is trending in the right direction.Blue Jays-Marlins trade pitch sends $56M Cy Young winner to Toronto for World Series resurgenceBraves predicted to trade Didier Fuentes, JR Ritchie for $32M Cy Young winner to dethrone DodgersBraves reporter says Atlanta close to benching Austin Riley after horrendous start to the seasonPadres labeled 'fraudulent' outside of Mason Miller, Adrian Morejon after being swept by Phillies
