Now, the remaining 16 teams are split into pairs of eight, with each pair playing a best-of-three series to determine the eight teams that will be heading to Omaha. The host team will be the home team for Game 1 and Game 3, if necessary. The visiting team will have those honors in Game 2. When the teams arrive in Omaha, the double-elimination format returns. The eight teams will be split into two four-team brackets, using a double-elimination format to determine the final two teams. Those teams will then play a best-of-three series to crown a champion.

Rome Odunze looking to step into larger role for Chicago Bears in 2026
Former Washington Huskies star wide receiver Rome Odunze has become a popular name both on and off the field with the Chicago Bears, and looked like he was ready to become one of the NFL's brightest young stars during the 2025 season. However, he suffered a stress fracture in his foot midway through the year and wound up being sidelined for the final five games of the regular season, which was a speed bump in the career of the former No. 9 overall pick in the 2024 draft, who ranks No. 2 all-time in UW history in career receptions and receiving yards, and No. 3 in receiving touchdowns."Your career is going to invite those moments of adversity," Odunze told ESPN's Courtney Cronin. "That's the moment that I was in, and I embraced that. I know I'm better for it to be able to go through something like that and have the season that I did that brought me to that sort of disappointment. I feel like there's those moments (that) can tell you who you are and where you're going to go from there."For Odunze, who is now the clear-cut WR1 for quarterback Caleb Williams and the Bears after DJ Moore was traded to the Buffalo Bills in the offseason, that was another moment of adversity that he's looking to overcome.Caleb Williams casually flicking it 60+ yards on the move and dropping a dime to Rome Odunze. pic.twitter.com/HrtPX9AZvnhttps://t.co/hl0s8J60FM— Ari Meirov (@MySportsUpdate) May 29, 2026"It was tough for sure," Odunze added. "DJ's my brother. He was a big mentor for me being here, and I'm happy he's now with a great team, a contender that has awesome players as well. I'm excited to kind of fill that role that he was playing here and kind of absorb some of that void collectively."However, after hauling in 44 catches for 661 yards and 9 touchdowns on 90 targets last season, the hard-working and ever-consistent Odunze has an opportunity to ascend to NFL stardom in his new role as the Bears look to make it back to the playoffs."The biggest thing for me is my actions daily," Odunze said. "I feel like if I take the proper steps daily, I'm doing the right things and people will be able to follow. And then when things might find themselves out of line, being able to correct those things...whether it's vocally or through more action, whatever that takes."This article originally appeared on Huskies Wire: Chicago Bears looking for Rome Odunze to step into WR1 role in 2026

Rally Royals: 9th inning comeback pushes Royals past Twins
Jun 6, 2026; Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA; Kansas City Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. (7) completes a double play off the bat of Minnesota Twins left fielder Trevor Larnach (9) during the third inning at Target Field. Mandatory Credit: Jeffrey Becker-Imagn Images | Jeffrey Becker-Imagn Images It was a pitcher’s duel all day in the Twin Cities. The offense’s got going late, but it was the Royals getting the last laugh, beating the Twins 3-2 after a 2-run top of the 9th inning. Carter Jensen hit a leadoff homer to the right field seats off Joe Ryan. The first career leadoff homer for Jensen, it was also his 8th on the season. Hot start!Vote Carter: https://t.co/fEY1ycYg48https://t.co/to5xpB6oLGpic.twitter.com/vIcc6rCRXJ— Kansas City Royals (@Royals) June 6, 2026Luinder Avila was really good, his first 4 innings of work were hitless, with a pair of walks. He did run into trouble in the 5th. Austin Martin hit a leadoff single and Victor Caratini smashed a double off the right center field wall. Royce Lewis worked a walk, loading the bases with nobody out. Tristan Gray crushed a liner to center, but Kyle Isbel was able to get underneath it. 1-1 on the sac fly. Avila’s last pitch of the day was the biggest one, inducing Ryan Kreidler to hit into an inning ending double play. Avila’s final line was 5 innings, 2 hits, 1 run, 3 walks and 3 strikeouts, on just 70 pitches. The Royals had plenty of runners on against Joe Ryan but failed to capitalize. Ryan went 6 innings, allowing 6 hits, 1 run, 2 walks and striking out 5. Daniel Lynch IV got a 1-2-3 6th. Lucas Erceg gave up a 1 out walk, but no further damage was done in the 7th, an encouraging sign for the heavily struggling Erceg. Matt Strahm got the 8th, after recording two quick outs, pinch hitter Orlando Arcia launched his first homer of the year to put the Twins in front 2-1. Strahm quickly retired the next batter to end the inning. Isaac Collins led off the 9th with a single, Tyler Tolbert pinch ran for him and stole second base. Josh Rojas reached on a fielder’s choice, on a grounder back to the pitcher, but the throw went to second trying to get Tolbert, his headfirst dive back into the bag beat the tag. Isbel would bunt the runners over, before Jensen tied the game with a sac fly to right. Bobby Witt Jr. up next, and he lined one over the head of Arcia at shortstop, Rojas would beat the throw home and the Royals were ahead 3-2. Swinging ahead in the 9th! pic.twitter.com/1Yyg5yygUg— Kansas City Royals (@Royals) June 6, 2026Alex Lange got the 9th, trying to record a third consecutive save. He allowed a leadoff double to Kody Clemens off the right field wall but bounced back with two straight strikeouts. Caratini got hit by a 2-2 pitch, bringing up Lewis. After a long battle and full count, Lange struck him out looking. The Royals have now clinched at least a series split; they are 4-5 on the long road trip. They are 26-39 on the season. Noah Cameron starts the finale tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is set for 1:10 p.m. CT.

LAS VEGAS, NV - JULY 9: Belal Muhammad enters the Octagon before facing Jordan Mein in their welterweight bout duringduring the UFC 213 event at T-Mobile Arena on July 9, 2017 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by Rey Del Rio/Getty Images) | Getty Images Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is live TONIGHT (Sat., June 6, 2026)with UFC Vegas 118, streaming live online via Paramount+. The event happens inside META APEX in Las Vegas, Nevada.UFC Vegas 118 PreviewUFC’s last show before its blowout White House bash is flying under-the-radar; however, there’s some interesting bouts here. The main event is Belal Muhammad vs. Gabriel Bonfim. Muhammad was the Welterweight champion little more than one year ago. He’s lost twice in a row, though, and now sees his Top 5 status under attack. Bonfim is on a nice little win streak, but this is the deepest into the top ranks he’s ever travelled. The co-main event provides a similar kind of story. Brendan Allen is ranked No. 4 at Middleweight and is coming off two very impressive wins (like this). He’s got the surging Edmen Shahbazyan tonight, someone outside the Top 15 (here’s why). Allen might be wanting to stay busy, but he risks getting shuffled out the title picture if he slips up here.Rounding out our main card tonight is Fares Ziam vs. Tom Nolan, Bryce Mitchell vs. Santiago Luna, Matt Schnell vs. Alessandro Costa and Iwo Baraniewski vs. Junior Tafa. Ziam, Luna and Baraniewski are all exciting prospects in their respective divisions. The featured “Prelim” tonight is Marcus McGhee vs. John Yannis. McGhee is coming off a loss to current champion, Petr Yan (in an overseas co-main event). He’s got a two-fight Octagon veteran in this match-up. Bruno Silva vs. Edgar Chairez and Jordan Leavitt vs. Joanderson Brito should be pretty good scraps, too.UFC Vegas 118 Start Date and TimeAfter last week’s early bird special, we’re back to the standard operating procedure and the usual Paramount+ timings over at META APEX. For gay Palestinians fleeing persecution at home, Israel is no safe haven
Israel, which bills itself as the only democracy in the Middle East, has long claimed that status makes it a sanctuary for LGBTQ+ people fleeing persecution elsewhere in the region. In his speech before Congress in 2024, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu mocked protesters holding “Gays for Gaza” signs outside, saying they “might as well hold up signs saying ‘Chickens for KFC.’” Related Shelter provides safe space for some LGBTQ+ Lebanese refugees during Israeli attacks But reporting by The Intercept reveals that for gay Palestinians seeking asylum in Israel, the so-called LGBTQ+ haven for LGBTQ+ people is anything but safe. Interviews with multiple advocates and lawyers for Palestinian asylum seekers describe how Israeli authorities issue sudden permit revocations and other bureaucratic hurdles in the service of coercing Palestinians into sharing information with Israel’s intelligence apparatus. Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Kareem (not his real name) was one victim exploited because of his sexual identity. Born and raised in the West Bank near Ramallah, the 22-year-old is the child of a politically prominent Palestinian family. His father works for the Palestinian Authority; his grandfather was a member of the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO). Two years ago, Kareem joined a low-key LGBTQ+ group in Ramallah, which met weekly to socialize, knit, or share holidays together. Word got out to his family. Kareem’s father was furious over the rumors. “My dad aimed his gun towards me,” Kareem recalled, “and said that if he ever finds out that I’m gay, he would ‘rest a bullet between my eyes.’” After enduring years of sexual and physical abuse from cousins who taunted him for his feminine presentation, Kareem was now watching his father send those same family members “to stalk my friends and me.” Kareem decided to flee. His family would likely find him anywhere in the West Bank, so he made his way to an Israeli checkpoint. His asylum claim was immediately exploited by Israeli authorities. At a processing facility at Sha’ar Ephraim, a crossing point in the northern West Bank, officers repeatedly pressed Kareem for information on friends and family still living in the West Bank. The implication was a quid pro quo, his lawyer said: intelligence in exchange for an easier permit approval process. “When you are in such a fragile situation, you cannot be in the territories, and you don’t have status in Israel, the security bodies like the police use this weakness, and they try to get information or get someone’s cooperation from those people,” Kareem’s lawyer, Tamir Blank, told The Intercept. “They promise them that they will not deport them or put them in jail.” Kareem didn’t have any useful information for the Israelis, as is the case for many LGBTQ+ refugees who are shut out or shunned by family or organizations in which security services are interested. But just by showing up at the checkpoint, Kareem had crossed a Rubicon: he now carried the stigma of collaboration, true or not. He had nowhere else to go. Kareem was eventually granted a welfare permit allowing him to stay in Israel temporarily, and he spent months sleeping on benches and couch surfing before finding housing at an emergency LGBTQ+ youth shelter in Tel Aviv called The Pink Roof. But soon after, Kareem woke to a phone alert that his six-month permit had been invalidated. His lawyers told him to leave the government-sponsored shelter immediately: He was at risk of deportation. “I was so confused. They had just given me the permit, so why would they take it away?” Kareem recounted. The reason for the permit revocation made the prospect of being sent back to the West Bank even more dire: Kareem’s family had engineered it. According to Kareem’s lawyers, his family filed a report with Israeli social services claiming Kareem was a Hamas member planning to attack civilians. “I had a security block on my application,” Kareem said. “There was no way to get it back without petitioning the military commander for reconsideration.” “Everything became much more difficult after October 7,” said Nimrod Avigal, another advocate who has worked on Kareem’s case. Kareem’s family also began posting notices in Facebook groups offering a cash reward for any information leading to Kareem’s whereabouts, and they hired men in Ramallah to track Kareem down on the other side of the separation wall. “They said that they were hired by my family to look for me and bring me back ‘after I tarnished the family’s reputation,’” Kareem recalled, “and that they need to ‘wash their honor as soon as possible.’” Kareem’s attorney said that translated to ensuring Kareem “does not remain alive.” But Israel contended in Kareem’s case that gay Palestinians like him were motivated not by genuine fear but a desire to “enjoy the more liberal lifestyle in Israel, rather than facing an actual threat.” It’s a standard response in similar cases, according to his lawyers, and at odds with Israel’s “safe haven” descriptions advertised to the world. Rather than being welcomed in Israel, they say gay Palestinians are subject to blackmail and pressured to provide intelligence in exchange for protection. Willing cooperation or coercion is likely in the search for a coveted humanitarian stay permit. The authorities “use every weakness they can,” Kareem’s lawyer said. Because he was born in the West Bank and holds Palestinian Authority-issued identification, Kareem will never obtain residency or citizenship in Israel under current law. That would set a precedent for a broader right of return for Palestinians displaced in the 1948 Arab–Israeli War.For now, Kareem is living permit to permit in a safe haven he’ll never call home. Bruno Fernandes and Gonçalo Guedes Fire Portugal Past Chile
Bruno Fernandes and Gonçalo Guedes Fire Portugal Past ChilePortugal overcame a stubborn Chile side to claim a 2-1 victory in their penultimate World Cup warm-up match on Saturday, although the scoreline only tells part of the story.Despite dominating much of the contest at the Estádio Nacional do Jamor, Roberto Martínez's side found Chile goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux in inspired form throughout the first half. The Swansea City shot-stopper denied Rúben Dias early on and later kept out Cristiano Ronaldo, while Rafael Leão also struck the post as Portugal pushed for an opener.Ronaldo thought he had broken the deadlock before the interval, but his effort was ruled out for offside. The first half also saw tensions boil over in what was supposed to be a friendly encounter. Following a heated altercation involving João Cancelo and Maximiliano Falcón, Rafael Leão and Iván Román were both shown red cards after clashing off the ball.Portugal continued to press after the break and finally got their reward in the 57th minute. Rúben Neves produced a superb through ball to pick out substitute Gonçalo Guedes, who calmly slotted beyond Vigouroux. The hosts doubled their advantage midway through the second half when Bruno Fernandes fired home from the edge of the box following a Chilean defensive mistake. The goal moved the Manchester United midfielder into Portugal's top five all-time goalscorers alongside Nuno Gomes on 29 international goals.Chile grabbed a late consolation through Lucas Cepeda in stoppage time, but Portugal comfortably saw out the victory ahead of their final pre-World Cup friendly against Nigeria.

With the FIFA World Cup just days away, soccer fans were already getting into the spirit at Santa Clara's FIFA-themed night market. The special World Cup-themed event started Friday and ends Saturday night in Santa Clara. The free event features food and thrift vendors, live entertainment, cultural performances and soccer-themed activities and games hosted by the San Jose Earthquakes and Bay FC.Families, soccer fans and visitors filled the market Friday evening, testing their skills at soccer challenges, shopping for jerseys and counting down to the start of the tournament."We have jerseys from all over the world," said vendor Dre Lucero with Pop Up San Jose. "Soccer jerseys are big sellers for the World Cup."WORLD CUP 2026: Everything to know about games at Levi's Stadium, Bay Area watch parties and moreThe event is one of several World Cup-themed celebrations taking place across the South Bay ahead of the Bay Area's first match at Levi's Stadium on June 13.For some fans, the excitement started in downtown San Jose, where a giant soccer ball installation outside San Pedro Square Market has become a popular destination for photos and social media posts."It's better than I imagined," said one visitor after seeing the display in person.Fans proudly represented countries from around the world while discussing which teams they'll be cheering for during the tournament."The day U.S. is playing, we're cheering U.S., or the day Brazil is playing, the same happens with Argentina, Colombia, Ecuador," said soccer fan Claudette Bautista.MORE: Santa Clara preps for activity surge as countdown underway for FIFA World CupThe Bay Area will host six FIFA World Cup matches at Levi's Stadium this summer, bringing fans from around the globe to Santa Clara. While some attendees said they are still hoping to score tickets to the games, others are planning to take part in watch parties and community events happening throughout the region.Organizers say creating free events like the night market gives residents a chance to be part of the World Cup experience, even if they don't attend a match in person."We know not everybody can afford a ticket to go to one of these matches, so we wanted to bring some of that excitement to the community," said Santa Clara spokesperson Janine De La Vega. For those looking to get a jump on World Cup festivities, Saturday's Night Market offers one more chance to enjoy the food, music and soccer-themed activities before the Bay Area's World Cup countdown enters its final week.If you're on the ABC7 News app, click here to watch live

Liberty Union is headed to its third consecutive state championship game
AKRON – Even though the Liberty Union softball team led by a run through five innings against Canfield South Range, it seemed like it was just a matter of time before the Lions’ bats would come alive, score more runs, and put some breathing room between themselves and the Rangers.Liberty Union did that and more by sending 11 batters to the plate in the bottom of the sixth inning, pounded out six hits and scored six runs to pull away for an 8-1 victory in a Division V state semifinal on Saturday, June 6 at Akron’s Firestone Stadium. The Lions 27-1) advance and will play in their third consecutive state championship game and will face Wheelersburg (22-5) in the state title game at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 7. Liberty Union won the Division III state championship in 2024 and lost to Wheelersburg last season to finish as state runners-up.The Lions played small in their breakout inning, bunting the ball four consecutive times.“I felt good when we scored in the first inning because we haven’t done that in a while,” Liberty Union coach Shaun Hochradel said. “It was not our best defensive game, but Eden and Suzie pitched well enough to keep us right there. One of the things we have done in the last two weeks is bunt and bunt against live pitching and it paid off today in a huge way with the bottom of our order and what they did to get us back to the top of our order.”The Lions had to overcome three errors, but sophomore pitcher Eden Wilson was able to come up with big pitches to keep the Raiders off the scoreboard. She pitched five innings, gave up four hits, and the lone run South Range score was unearned. Suzie Shultz pitched the final two innings and didn’t allow a run. They combined leave 11 South Range baserunners stranded.Shultz had an RBI single in the first inning, and after South Range tied it a 1-1, scoring on an error, Shultz came up huge again in the fifth inning with an RBI double to give the Lions a 2-1 advantage. The sixth inning outburst was led by the bottom of the order. Emilyn Kaney started things off with a walk, Izzie Shultz bunted her over for the first out, and then Hannah Leith and Cobie Weaver reached on bunt singles to bring the top of the order back up, and they proceeded to have five straight hits.Alexis McCoy and Haedan Brunty both singled home a run, and Shultz singled to plate two more runs. After a pop out, Ryleigh Brown ripped a double to score two more and give the Lions a seven-run lead.Liberty Union finished with 12 hits, led by Suzie Shultz, who went 3-for-3 with four RBIs. McCoy, Brunty and Brown all finished with two hits. Each time Shultz came to bat with runners on she delivered all three times.“She is the definition of clutch,” Hochradel said. “One of the words I love to use with Suzie is grit. She has so much grit and determination. She puts in the work andwhen you put in the work, you should expect good results, and she has done that.”Shultz said she was trying to see as many pitches as she could in each bat.“I was trying to stay calm, and I swung at ball that was too high and that helped me to get locked back in,” Shultz said. “I tried to see as many pitches as a I could and attack on the ones I knew I could hit. I feel like hitting is contagious and our goal is passing the bat to the next batter. We all want to do it for our teammates. We just tried to stay in the moment, get a hit and pass the bat to the next person and keep it going.”Tom Wilson is a sports reporter for the Lancaster Eagle-Gazette. Rays moving left-hander Steven Matz to the bullpen after 2 rough starts
MIAMI (AP) — Steven Matz is moving from the starting rotation to the bullpen after a pair of poor starts by the Tampa Bay Rays left-hander, manager Kevin Cash said Saturday.Matz, who signed a two-year, $15 million deal with Tampa Bay in December, allowed five runs on six hits, including two home runs, in an 8-0 loss to Detroit on Tuesday. It was his second straight loss and raised his ERA to 5.48 this season. The 35-year-old had gone on the injured list on May 4 because of left elbow inflammation and returned on May 20. In his last two starts, he has allowed 11 runs, 13 hits and three home runs, while walking two with four strikeouts.“It's not by any stretch permanent,” Cash said ahead of Saturday's game at Miami. “He will pitch out of the pen for the foreseeable future and then we will reassess.”Cash said Matz's replacement in the rotation has not been solidified but right-hander Mason Englert, who was recalled from Triple-A Durham on Wednesday, could work bulk innings in his place.“We'll figure it out,” Cash said. “I think he'll (be) in line right now to provide a lengthier role on that day, but we're not just going to start him unless we have to.”Matz went 5-2 with a 3.05 ERA and two saves last season in a career-high 53 appearances with the St. Louis Cardinals and Boston Red Sox. He struck out 59 and walked 11 in 76 2/3 innings.___AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/MLB

99 days till Arizona Cardinals' opener: Remembering the 1999 season
We can officially commence the countdown to the start of the Arizona Cardinals' regular season. Today, Saturday, June 6 is 99 days away from the Arizona Cardinals' regular-season opener on Sept. 13 on the road against the Los Angeles Chargers. With 99 days until Week 1, let's look back at the 1999 season for the Cardinals.A look back at the 1999 season for the CardinalsThis was a terribly disappointing season. Coming off their first playoff appearance since moving to Arizona and a playoff win over the Dallas Cowboys, the Cardinals changed the roster. Tackle Lomas Brown, fullback Larry Centers and linebacker Jamir Miller all left. They went 6-10. Quarterback Jake Plummer had an awful season. They did win four straight games to get to 6-6 only to lose the final four games of the season. They were awful on offense, averaging 15.3 points per game, and on defense, giving up 23.9 per game. 1999 offensive leadersPlummer started 11 games in 1999. He threw only nine touchdown passes and had a league-leading 24 interceptions, completing 52.8% of his passes. Dave Brown started the other five games and had two touchdown passes and six picks. Adrian Murrell led the team with 593 rushing yards, but he averaged 2.9 yards per attempt. He did not score a touchdown. Michael Pittman rushed for 289 yards and two scores. Frank Sanders was the leading receiver with 79 catches for 954 yards but only one touchdown. Rob Moore had five touchdown catches.1999 defensive leadersSimeon Rice was a bright spot with 16.5 sacks. Eric Swann was next with four, but he played in only nine games. Linebacker Ronald McKinnon led the team with 143 total tackles, followed by linebacker Rob Fredrickson with 125 and safety Kwamie Lassitter with 114. Five different players led with two interceptions. Get more Cardinals and NFL coverage from Cards Wire's Jess Root and others by listening to the latest on the Rise Up, See Red podcast. ‘Be so serious’: WNBA star speaks out against ‘USA 250’ patches due to slavery
Apr 28, 2026; Las Vegas, NV, USA; Las Vegas Aces forward-center Brianna Turner (21) poses for a photo during the 2026 Las Vegas Aces Media Day.Mandatory Credit: Lucas Peltier-Imagn ImagesLater this year, the uniforms for the upcoming WNBA All-Star Game will feature special “USA 250” patches in celebration of the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States of America. However, one WNBA superstar does not think that it’s appropriate for the league to be celebrating the occasion. In a series of social media posts this week, Las Vegas Aces star forward Brianna Turner spoke out against the idea of the players wearing the special patches to honor America’s 250th birthday due to the country’s history with slavery.‘Be So Serious’Turner, who is a prominent WNBA star and currently serves as the treasurer of the WNBA Players’ Association, criticized the idea that WNBA All-Stars should wear the “USA 250” patch on their jerseys for the WNBA All-Star Game. The Aces star claimed that most of the players in the WNBA and the “vast majority” of people in America today would not have been “free” 250 years ago.“The irony of all the USA 250 stuff is that the vast majority of people in America today would not have been “free” 250 years ago,” Turner wrote in a post on X. “Whoever called for the WNBA all star uniforms to have the USA 250 patch should have thought that through considering no WNBA players would have been free 250 years ago. The majority wouldn’t even have their freedom 100 years ago.”“We are some of the most elite female athletes,” Turner added in a follow-up post. “250 years ago we would have been breeders or in the fields working all day. Be so serious rn.”Turner went on to concede that the decision to wear the patches was probably a financial move.“Yesss I know this was probably a financial decision at the end of the day but still,” she added. It’s worth noting that the WNBA has not confirmed that it will wear the patches. While Sportico reported Thursday that the WNBA would have its All-Stars wear the patches during July 24-26 festivities in Chicago, the league said that “nothing has been finalized at this time.”“Like other major sports leagues, we are exploring how best to commemorate the country’s 250th anniversary,” the WNBA said in a statement to USA Today. “Nothing has been finalized at this time.”Turner is a Women’s Basketball StarTurner has had quite a successful basketball career across her time at both the college level and the professional ranks. During her time with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at the college level, Turner was an NCAA Champion, a two-time All-American, and a three-time ACC Defensive Player of the Year.At the professional level, Turner has been named to the WNBA All-Defensive First Team two times in her young career and won the 2025 Commissioner’s Cup as a member of the Indiana Fever.Additionally, Turner has represented the United States at the international level, competing for the United States women’s national basketball team at the 2012 FIBA Under-17 World Championship, 2013 FIBA Under-19 World Championship, and 2014 FIBA Americas Under-18 Championship.[13]The post ‘Be so serious’: WNBA star speaks out against ‘USA 250’ patches due to slavery appeared first on The Comeback: Today’s Top Sports Stories & Reactions.

"It wasn't exactly cool" – Oliver Baumann on Neuer replacing him as Germany No. 1
"It wasn't exactly cool" – Oliver Baumann on Neuer replacing him as Germany No. 1Although TSG Hoffenheim goalkeeper Oliver Baumann was Germany’s No.1 throughout the World Cup qualifying campaign, he will not start at the tournament itself. Instead, 40-year-old Bayern legend Manuel Neuer has been named first-choice goalkeeper after coming out of international retirement, and is set to return from a calf injury in time for Germany’s opener against Curaçao next Sunday.Head coach Julian Nagelsmann confirmed Neuer's imminent return after Baumann stepped in for the 40-year-old in Saturday’s 2-1 friendly win over the United States. After the match, Baumann was asked how he felt when he learned he would be replaced by Neuer for the World Cup – and he didn't hide that it came as a blow.“It was tough at first. It wasn't exactly cool,” Baumann told RTL after Saturday's win. However, Baumann didn't dwell on it, choosing instead to put the team ahead of himself.“It was immediately clear to me that I would put myself at the service of the team. This is a World Cup – I want to help the team and make my contribution. Everything else is secondary,” he said.Meanwhile, Nagelsmann singled Baumann out for praise in a post-match interview.“I want to give Oliver Baumann a huge compliment. He is a super, super guy. Over the past days and weeks, he has fully put himself at the service of the team," Nagelsmann said.

Steelers learn potential cost for rare QB opportunity and it's expensive price
With a possible 2026 NFL supplemental draft looming, the Pittsburgh Steelers learned of the potential price for quarterback Brendan Sorsby — and it isn't cheap.According to NFL insider Tony Pauline, drafting Sorsby in a supplemental draft could cost teams at least a late-first- to early-second-round draft pick.“Multiple sources inside the league tell me if QB Brendan Sorsby of Texas Tech is unable to regain eligibility for the ‘26 college season & forced to enter a supplemental draft, he will be a late 1st/early 2nd round pick depending on the order,” Pauline wrote via X. “Presently Sorsby is graded higher than Arch Manning by several area scouts as we head towards the season.”Following Sorsby's gambling controversy, the NCAA denied Texas Tech's appeal to reinstate the talented quarterback, and it appears the NFL may be heading toward a oh-so-rare supplemental draft. For fans curious as to how a supplemental draft works, it allows teams to bid future draft picks on eligible prospects who were not part of the standard draft held in April. The Steelers would fall into the last of three lottery tiers based on their 2025 playoff standing, which means Pittsburgh would likely need to offer a late first-round pick if the team was interested in acquiring Sorsby. For up-to-date Steelers coverage, including any offseason moves, follow us on X @TheSteelersWire and give our Facebook page a like. This article originally appeared on Steelers Wire: Steelers may have to use a first- round pick on Brendan Sorsby

Why Quinn Gray's first FAMU football camp is summer's highlight
Nearly 400 high school football players arrived at Florida A&M’s campus, looking for an opportunity and evaluation on Saturday, June 6.It marked the first prospect camp for Quinn Fordham Gray Sr. as the program’s 20th full-time head coach, hired in December 2025. The FAMU Sports Hall of Fame quarterback called the assembly of prep football players a “tremendous turnout” as they packed onto Ken Riley Field at Bragg Memorial Stadium and the Rattlers’ on-campus practice field.“As we know, recruiting is a lifeline of our program,” Gray told the Tallahassee Democrat.“We have to make sure we’re putting our best foot forward and bringing the best talent possible. This is one of the highlights of our summer, being able to bring kids from all over the southeastern region, so we can have them on campus and be able to evaluate them right in front of our eyes.”Gray and FAMU assistants proctored players in individual drills, hands-on coaching, the much-anticipated one-on-one drills that pitted the top-performing wide receivers and defensive backs against each other, and some trench warfare between offensive and defensive linemen.Saturday also allowed current Rattler players to get their feet wet in coaching, such as quarterback Isaiah Knowles.Knowles helped quarterbacks coach Reid Sanders in teaching footwork, hitting receiving targets, and pocket presence. The graduate student signal caller said he hopes to rise through the ranks as a quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator and ultimately become a head coach someday.“It’s definitely a good opportunity to get into the coaching phase of things because that’s what I want to do when my playing days are over,” said Knowles, who transferred from Albany State this January. “It was pretty cool.”For summertime’s camp season, Gray held a ‘Helmets and Heels’ camp for women on June 5 and will next have a 7-on-7 tournament and Big Man Camp next Thursday, June 11.The new head Rattler knows his first round of camps is just a prelude to something bigger. He has aspirations for FAMU to host a Mega Camp in Tallahassee in the coming years.“It was a great day for us,” Gray said. “It probably only gets bigger from here. We’re looking forward to this thing growing and getting better from here.”Florida A&M football 2026 scheduleAll times are EasternSaturday, Aug. 29: vs. Albany State, 7 p.m., SWAC TVSunday, Sept. 6: vs. South Carolina State, Orange Blossom Classic at Miami Gardens' Hard Rock Stadium, 3 p.m., ESPNUThursday, Sept. 10: at Miami, 8 p.m., ACC NetworkSaturday, Sept. 19: vs. Tennessee State, 7 p.m., HBCU GOSaturday, Sept. 26: vs. Alabama A&M (SWAC), 7 p.m., SWAC TVSaturday, Oct. 3: BYESaturday, Oct. 10: at Alabama State (SWAC), 3 p.m., HBCU GOSaturday, Oct. 17: at Jackson State (SWAC), 3 p.m., ESPN NetworkSaturday, Oct. 24: vs. Arkansas-Pine Bluff (SWAC/Homecoming), 3 p.m., HBCU GOSaturday, Oct. 31: vs. Southern (SWAC), 3 p.m., HBCU GOSaturday, Nov. 7: at Alcorn State (SWAC), 3 p.m., SWAC TVSaturday, Nov. 14: vs. Mississippi Valley State (SWAC), 3 p.m., SWAC TVSaturday, Nov. 21: vs. Bethune-Cookman (SWAC/Florida Classic), 3:30 p.m., ESPN+Gerald Thomas, III, is a multi-time national award-winning reporter for his coverage of the Florida A&M Rattlers at the Tallahassee Democrat.Follow his award-winning coverage on RattlerNews.com and contact him via email at GDThomas@Tallahassee.com or on the app formerly known as Twitter @3peatgee.This article originally appeared on Tallahassee Democrat: FAMU football draws nearly 400 to Quinn Gray's first prospect camp

Starting lineup decisions loom for Jazz
Utah Jazz head coach Will Hardy looks to the scoreboard during an NBA game against the Memphis Grizzlies held at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City on Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2025. | Isaac Hale, Deseret News This article was first published as the Jazz Insiders newsletter. No matter who the Utah Jazz end up taking with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, they are going to have a bit of a dilemma on their hands: Who will make up the 2026-27 starting five?Assuming the Jazz come to a contractual agreement with Walker Kessler (which it is assumed they will), the starting five would definitely include him, Jaren Jackson Jr., and Lauri Markkanen. That leaves room for two more players, and there will be three players vying for those spots — Keyonte George, Ace Bailey and the incoming 2026 draft pick. This is a luxury of a problem.Having either a No. 2 pick, No. 5 pick or the No. 16 pick, who just had a breakout third season, as the first man off the bench is a great place to be, especially considering where the Jazz were for the last four years. There are a number of the ways the Jazz could approach making a decision about who will start, and there are a number of factors that will go into that decision-making process.Position will matter. Are the Jazz going to pick Darryn Peterson? And if so, are they going to want him to play point guard or at the two spot? Are they taking AJ Dybantsa? How would the BYU star fit alongside the rest of the frontcourt? The readiness of the incoming rookie will also matter. It would not surprise me at all if the season started with the newest draft pick on the bench and then changed once he got some NBA reps. One thing that could also play a role is going to be where Kessler is post-surgery recovery-wise. By all accounts, he is well-recovered, looking at a healthy offseason and will be 100% ready to go, but he hasn’t played NBA ball for an entire season, so there might be some ramp-up time for the center, depending on how he’s feeling and how cautious the Jazz want to be with him. No matter what, the Jazz are going to have to make a tough decision with one of their young players, but it’s a great spot for the team to be in that these are the kinds of problems they’re facing as we look ahead to the 2026-27 season. Kane edges England to underwhelming New Zealand victory
Harry Kane scored the only goal in England's win over New Zealand (Richard Pelham)Harry Kane's 79th international goal edged England to a 1-0 win over New Zealand as the Three Lions' World Cup preparations got off to an underwhelming start in the Florida heat on Saturday.Kane flicked in Djed Spence's cross in first half stoppage time as England laboured to victory against a side 81 places below them in the world rankings.New Zealand were thrashed 4-0 by Haiti on Wednesday but Thomas Tuchel's men found clear-cut chances far harder to come by in their first experience of the brutal conditions Stateside.Tuchel named two entirely different sides for each half, but there was little to read into his team selection ahead of England's opening game of the World Cup against Croatia on June 10.Marcus Rashford flashed a good opening wide from the edge of the box.Kane typically made the breakthrough from an in-swinging cross by Spence, who impressed at left-back.Ivan Toney replaced Kane among the 11 changes made by Tuchel at the break.Toney thought he had won a penalty only for New Zealand to be rescued by a marginal offside call against the Al Ahli striker.England dominated possession but could not add to their lead with the Kiwis happy to keep the score down.Despite not having won a major tournament for 60 years, England go into the World Cup among the favourites having reached at least the quarter-finals in their last four tournaments. They also face Ghana and Panama in Group L.New Zealand will face Iran, Belgium and Egypt in Group G.kca/pb

Rockets predicted to trade Jabari Smith Jr., ex-Laker for Wizards' $175M Finals champion, All-Star
Rockets predicted to trade Jabari Smith Jr., ex-Laker for Wizards' $175M Finals champion, All-Star originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Houston Rockets were first-round exits this season after losing their playoff series to the Los Angeles Lakers, who were without Luka Doncic. They are gearing up for next season, as Fred VanVleet will be returning from injury along with much of their core. The Rockets also have the flexibility to be aggressive this summer if they choose. Houston could trade for a superstar-caliber player if it wants to put itself in position to compete for a championship next season.“Houston has the ammunition to pull the trigger on another blockbuster trade. Alperen Sengun, Amen Thompson, Jabari Smith Jr., Tari Eason and Reed Sheppard highlight a promising group of players who have already competed in high-stakes playoff games. Production aside, they could be the building blocks to a franchise looking to get younger. The Rockets also have seven first-round picks between 2027 and 2032. They could package a few picks and just a portion of that young core to land a win-now star,” SI’s Jed Katz wrote. It is just a matter of which superstar the Rockets decide to pursue. One possibility is a blockbuster trade for Washington Wizards star Anthony Davis.“Houston Rockets receive: Anthony Davis Washington Wizards receive: Tari Eason (via sign-and-trade), Jabari Smith Jr., Dorian Finney-Smith, three second-round picks,” Katz wrote.Davis at power forward alongside Alperen Sengun could be a nightmare matchup for opposing teams. The good news for Houston is that Davis reportedly wants out of Washington before even playing a game for the franchise.“Anthony Davis has seemed to make his stance clear behind the scenes that if he had his choice, he wouldn't be sticking around with the Washington Wizards. Washington hoped that their trade deadline acquisition would help lead their young core to the next step in their rebuild, especially after landing Trae Young just before their addition of AD,” Wiz of Awe’s John Canady wrote.Adding Davis would give Houston a starting lineup featuring Kevin Durant, Amen Thompson, Anthony Davis, Fred VanVleet, and Alperen Sengun. That is a talented group that blends youth and veteran experience well.Davis is on a $175 million contract and has a player option after next season. This could end up being a one-year rental, or he could choose to finish out his deal in Houston. Either way, an aggressive move like this would signal that the Rockets are all-in on competing for a championship.More NBA news:Spurs' Victor Wembanyama admits he was stuck on the Thunder 'high' after going down 2-0 vs. KnicksWarriors' Stephen Curry reportedly meeting with LeBron James to finish careers in Golden StateLakers predicted to trade Austin Reaves, Dalton Knecht, draft capital for Bucks' $175M former MVPBucks, Celtics, Hawks 3-team trade idea sends Giannis Antetokounmpo, Jaylen Brown in blockbuster

Ned Jarrett's Life Reminds NASCAR What A Full Journey Looks Like
MARTINSVILLE, VA - NOVEMBER 01: NASCAR Hall of Famer Ned Jarrett speaks with the media during a press conference prior to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Goody's Headache Relief Shot 500 at Martinsville Speedway on November 1, 2015 in Martinsville, Virginia. (Photo by Brian Lawdermilk/NASCAR via Getty Images)NASCAR via Getty ImagesWhen the story of a professional American sports league is written, each chapter contains the stories of those who have left fingerprints on its evolution. In NASCAR, few fingerprints are more visible than those of Ned Jarrett.NASCAR’s tale contains the stories of champions, broadcasters, and ambassadors. Ned Jarrett was all three. His name appears in pages chronicling the early days of the sport, the years when television brought the sport to the masses, explaining stock car racing to generations of new fans, and in the modern era serving as an example for modern drivers and broadcasters to follow. Ned Jarrett died this week at age 93.The native of Newton, North Carolina started racing as more of a hobby than a career. Legend has it he won his first racecar in a poker game. And after spending time in the lower tier Sportsman series, he wanted to move up to the Cup series, then known as the Grand National Series, but had to do it all on his own. He needed a car to race, a team was building a car for another NASCAR legend, Junior Johnson, and were willing to sell it: for $2000.DARLINGTON, SC: Ned Jarrett straps on his helmet as he prepares for a practice session for the Rebel 300 NASCAR Cup race at Darlington Raceway. (Photo by ISC Images & Archives via Getty Images)ISC Archives/CQ-Roll Call Group via Getty Images“I went down to the shop the next Saturday morning, said I’ll write a check for it.” Jarrett said during his NASCAR Hall of Fame induction press conference in 2011. “I said, When the bank closes Friday, I'll write them a check, take off to Myrtle Beach, there was a hundred-mile race, pays $950 to win.“There was another race on Sunday afternoon in Charlotte, that pays $950 to win. That's $1900. I can cover that check on Monday morning. You can't be foolish enough to try that, but I did... I was cocky enough to believe if Junior Johnson could win races in that car, I could, too. I did that. Bargained for not only the car, but also I got the truck and trailer they hauled it on, got the pit equipment and their two mechanics to go with me that weekend all for $2,000 and an extra set of tires. We were able to pull it off.”Pull it off, he did. Jarrett would go on to score 50 wins, 51 if you count a 1959 win in the convertible series. He won his first NASCAR Cup series championship in 1961, the second in 1965, the same season of perhaps his most famous victory, at Darlington Raceway, where he won 14 laps ahead of the rest of the field, a record that still stands today. But 1965 was also the same year he broke his back in a crash at Greenville-Pickens Speedway. An injury that would force him into retirement at age 32 the following year. 1965: Ned Jarrett poses during the NASCAR Cup season in the Bondy Long-owned Ford. Jarrett took his second NASCAR Cup title, winning 13 of 54 races, and scoring 45 top-10 finishes. All of his victories came on short tracks, with the exception of the Southern 500 at the Darlington (SC) Raceway, a win that Jarrett considers the biggest of his career. (Photo by ISC Images & Archives via Getty Images)ISC Archives/CQ-Roll Call Group via Getty ImagesDuring his career behind the wheel, Jarrett cultivated a reputation as a gentleman driver — quiet, non-confrontational and relentlessly determined. After leaving the car, he transitioned first to radio and then television. There, alongside broadcasters such as Ken Squier, he helped make NASCAR understandable to casual viewers at a time when the sport was beginning to reach beyond its Southern roots. His most famous call came at the end of the 1993 Daytona 500. Late in the race, his youngest son Dale took the lead from Dale Earnhardt.“C’mon, Dale, go baby, go,” the elder Jarrett said on the broadcast as Squier and Neil Bonnett went silent. “… Don’t let him get to the inside of you coming around this turn. Here he comes, Earnhardt; it’s the Dale and Dale show as they come off Turn 4.“You know who I’m pulling for, it’s Dale Jarrett. Bring her to the inside, Dale, don’t let him get down there. He’s gonna make it! Dale Jarrett’s gonna win the Daytona 500! Alright!”Auto Racing: NASCAR Daytona 500: Dale Earnhardt (3) in action vs Dale Jarrett (18) during race at Daytona International Speedway. Daytona, FL 2/14/1993 CREDIT: Bill Frakes (Photo by Bill Frakes /Sports Illustrated via Getty Images) (Set Number: X43963 TK1 R1 F11 )Sports Illustrated via Getty ImagesIt remains one of the most memorable moments in NASCAR broadcasting history — a father momentarily forgetting he was supposed to be an analyst and reminding everyone he was still a dad.Jarrett stepped away from the full-time television grind in 2000. His final appearance in a broadcast booth came in 2017 as part of a throwback broadcast at Darlington Raceway.Named one of NASCAR’s 50 Greatest Drivers in 1998, Jarrett was inducted into the second class of the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2011. By then, his place in the sport's history had long since been secured. In his later years, Jarrett largely stepped away from the spotlight. It was a well-earned retirement for a man who had spent decades helping build the sport from both behind the wheel and behind the microphone.Unlike the sudden losses that sometimes jolt a sport—most recently Greg Biffle and Kyle Busch—Jarrett's passing feels more like the closing paragraph of a remarkably long chapter. He lived nearly a century, witnessed NASCAR's transformation from a regional curiosity into a major American sport, and with his final chapter now complete, the gentleman driver now becomes part of the story he helped write.CHARLOTTE, NC - JANUARY 28: NASCAR Hall of Famer Ned Jarrett (left) talks with his son and NASCAR Hall of Fame inductee Dale Jarrett during NASCAR Sprint Media Tour at the NASCAR Hall of Fame on January 28, 2014 in Charlotte, North Carolina. (Photo by Jared C. Tilton/NASCAR via Getty Images)NASCAR via Getty ImagesChampionships eventually become statistics. Television broadcasts fade into archives. Race cars become museum pieces. But the people who help shape a sport's identity endure long after all of them are gone. For more than six decades, Ned Jarrett helped define what NASCAR was, what it became, and how generations of fans came to understand it. Few figures in the sport's history can claim a broader impact, or a more lasting one.He arrived when NASCAR was still finding its footing. He lived long enough to watch it become a major American sport. And in more ways than one, he helped make that happen. We should all be so lucky. This article was originally published on Forbes.com

Cubs' Pete Crow-Armstrong homers twice, including with 2 outs in ninth, then Michael Busch walks off Giants in 10th
Much like the first two-plus months of the Chicago Cubs’ 2026 campaign, the past three days have been a roller coaster for a team that, at this point, is used to experiencing the highest highs and lowest lows. The Cubs, who strung together two 10-game win streaks in the same season for the first time since 1935 before losing 10 straight not long after that, continued to seesaw on Saturday afternoon at Wrigley Field. After walking off the Athletics on Thursday and then giving up seven home runs and a season-high 18 runs against the San Francisco Giants on Friday, the Cubs (34-31) swung back to even their series versus the Giants (26-39), with another walk-off victory.Pete Crow-Armstrong went 4-for-5, most notably launching a pair of game-tying homers. The second one came with two outs in the ninth inning. That dinger forced extras and set the stage for Michael Busch’s walk-off single in the 10th. Cue the pandemonium at the Friendly Confines, where celebration broke out in the wake of a bounce-back 3-2 victory. So, in summation, the last three days have gone like this for the Cubs: walk-off win, 18-3 loss, walk-off win. After losing a fly ball in the lights on Thursday versus the A’s, a defensive miscue that allowed an inside-the-park homer, Crow-Armstrong redeemed himself, first with a solo shot and then with a walk-off single. With his power-surged performance on Saturday, the standout center fielder has now launched four long balls in the past four games. He’s also currently on an 11-game hit streak.Play 2026 Soccer Pick 'Em with FOX One and make your picks for the world's biggest soccer tournamentFittingly, like the Cubs squad he stars for, “PCA” has shown resilience this season, in which he’s previously dealt with uncharacteristic defensive struggles and continued to work on regulating his emotions. On Saturday, his first big fly arrived in the sixth inning. It answered a Rafael Devers solo shot in the top of the frame. Crow-Armstrong lifted a sinker from Landen Roupp to right field for his first four-bagger of the day.Roupp conceded just that one run in 5 2/3 innings of work. The righty gave up only three hits. Chicago’s starter, right-hander Ben Brown, impressed, too. He spun 5 1/3 innings of shutout ball. As soon as he was pulled in the sixth, Devers teed off on lefty reliever Caleb Thielbar.Coming off his career-high eight-RBI outing on Friday, Matt Chapman lofted a sac fly that pushed San Francisco ahead 2-1 in the top of the ninth. The latest chapter of Crow-Armstrong’s late-game heroics unfolded in the bottom of the inning. The first pitch he faced, a 90-mph splitter, he mashed 403 feet to right field. Cubs fans, many of them already on their feet, were elated. That excitement reached a new level when Busch blasted a single to right in the 10th. Giants right fielder Victor Bericoto couldn’t field it properly, and that error opened the runway for Dansby Swanson to advance home. Struggling at the plate, Swanson was held out of the Cubs’ starting lineup on Saturday by design, so the shortstop could reset offensively. But he wound up scoring the game-winning run after beginning the 10th as Chicago’s automatic runner.

Darren Clarke, Ben Crane comfortable in Wisconsin at AmFam Championship
MADISON – Darren Clarke and Ben Crane combining their talents in Wisconsin is a powerful force. The duo built up unstoppable momentum in the second round of the AmFam Championship on Saturday, June 6, at TPC Wisconsin in the scramble format, birdieing every hole but one at the PGA Tour Champions event to shoot a scorching 17-under-par 54.That round set a tournament record, and Clarke and Crane hold a four-shot lead. The format will return to best ball for the final round on June 7. Being atop the leader board in the state is very familiar to both golfers.Clarke won the AmFam Championship last year alongside Thomas Bjørn, who isn’t in the field this time around while recovering from spinal surgery. You got to dig further back into the local golf archives to remember that Crane won wire-to-wire at the U.S. Bank Championship in 2005 at Brown Deer Park Golf Course.“I love it here, absolutely,” Crane said. “You guys are so passionate about your sports and get a great turnout.“Yeah, that was a hundred years ago: 2005, U.S. Bank Championship in Milwaukee. Yeah, but certainly great memories here as well.”The talkative Clarke, from Northern Ireland, and Crane, an easygoing American, make a natural pair.“When you've got full belief in your partner, you don't think of it," Clarke said. “It's not like you're playing a normal medal tournament or whatever. You've got backup, so you get freed up because of the way things were going.“Both of us playing so well, hitting so many really good shots that it didn't really matter if we hit an average shot because the other player was going to make up for it anyway.”That chemistry played out on the course on a gorgeous day. “We ham-and-egged it beautifully,” Crane said. “We had a plan going in with our order and how we were doing things, and it just produced freedom and fun.“Yeah, honestly, I got to the scoring trailer and I didn't know what we shot. I wasn't really paying attention, I was just like ‘The next one, the next one, the next one.’ Trying to run good programs one at a time, trying to match the speed, get the read. And when they said we shot 54, I'm like, ‘What?!’ ”Well, what happened on that pesky 10th hole in which Clarke and Crane combined for their lone par?“Ben had a lovely wedge in there to about 17, 18 feet behind the hole,” Clarke said. “It was a bit of a tricky downhill, sort of breaking hard right-to-left and Ben's broke hard across the hole.“Whatever. I slightly misjudged the speed, just missed it on the low side. We both hit good putts.” Steve Stricker and Mario Tiziani fare better than first roundWisconsin natives Steve Stricker and Mario Tiziana aren’t likely to catch Clarke and Crane, but they’re just trying to get a little better every round. The 59-year-old Stricker, an Edgerton native and tournament host, is playing in his first competitive round since December. Tiziani, a former University of Wisconsin standout, had played seven stroke-play events in 2026.They knocked off the rust with a 65 in the best-ball format in the first round. Then in the scramble on June 6, Stricker and Tiziani combined for a 61.“17-under (by Clarke and Crane) is really impressive,” Stricker said. “Conditions are so good though today. The course is soft, the greens are pure. You have to hit quality shots, though.“That 17-under's a pretty special round. Mario played very nice. I'm not helping him very much into the greens at all. My iron play is lacking. Yeah, we needed something special like that to get back into it and I just didn't help him enough, but 17-under is pretty low.”This article originally appeared on Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: Darren Clarke, Ben Crane shoot 17-under to lead at AmFam Championship

Track and field roundup: Willmar sophs bring home more hardware
Jun. 6—ST. MICHAEL — Samuel Huisinga put the finishing touches on a big weekend for the Willmar throwers.A sophomore for the Cardinal boys, Huisinga secured fourth place in the boys' discus on Day 2 of the Class AA State Track and Field Championships Saturday at St. Michael-Albertville High School.Huisinga's top toss came at 164 feet, 3 inches.Over the two-day meet, the Cardinals won three medals in the discus. In the girls' discus on Friday, Maddison Molacek took first place and Isabelle Engel was fifth. Cami Oehlers also competed in the girls' discus, placing 11th.It was a point of pride for Huisinga to add to the medal count on Saturday. "(We have) a lot of great throwers," Huisinga said. "Next year, we're hoping to bring six. I'm hoping to bring my two teammates Travis (Venenga) and Briggs (Baumgarn). We definitely can (do it)."Huisinga was sitting in ninth place after his second throw went 148-4. On his final attempt, he jumped into fourth place with a toss of 160-9."I didn't feel a lot of nerves, but the heat was kind of getting to me," Huisinga said. "(Hitting 160) was a big relief. I very much needed that. It took a lot of weight off my shoulders and I was ready to go into the finals."Knowing he was going to medal, Huisinga let it rip in the finals. He hit 161-6 on his fifth throw. His final throw was his best at 164-3.Huisinga knows he's the kind of thrower who gets stronger with each attempt."The 160 was the safe mark and I just wanted to send it as hard as possible in the finals to see how far I can really go."St. Peter's Parker Maloney won the Class AA title at 182-3. Mankato East's Carter Schwartz was second at 174-7.Owen Sportel knew he had a little bit to give after prelims on Friday. He qualified for the boys' 300-meter hurdles finals with a time of 40.43 seconds. That put him in the eighth seed and away from the middle of the pack in Saturday's championship run."I start off running and I see nobody in front of me," Sportel said of the start of his race on Saturday. "It was hard to gauge how fast I wanted to run. But once I hear the footsteps, I'm like, 'All right, I got to turn it on.' So that's what I did on the curve."Turns out, Sportel was able to keep pace with Class AA's best. He improved on his seed by three spots, finishing fifth in 39.65.He finished .03 off his personal best. But Sportel wasn't about to dwell on that after placing in the top five."I knew I could do better (than Friday) and that was my goal," Sportel said. "Every day, get a little better. I ran what I wanted to, I would say."Blake's Otis Friesen won the boys' 300 hurdles at 37.56. Waseca's Tovin Grannis was second at 38.33.After Sportel crossed the finish line, he booked it toward his teammates alongside the track fence. He was getting hugs and plenty of words of encouragement. He didn't know quite what place he finished, but Sportel knew it was good by their reaction."My teammate Tommy (Quinn) has been there since the start of the year just supporting me the whole time," Sportel said. "Seeing him at the finish line, he's yelling 'Let's go' and I could just see it in his face that I ran a pretty good time."Sportel turned around and the video board showed his fifth-place finish. That led to a roar from the Willmar contingent."It was my goal to get fifth or sixth place," Sportel said. "I knew I had some real (good) competition."The Willmar boys finished tied for 32nd place in the team standings with 11 points. Mankato East won the Class AA team title with 71.5. The Willmar girls, who led after four events on Day 1, finished in 13th place with 27 points. Orono claimed the girls' team championship with 64.

IND vs AFG: Sriganganagar’s Manav Suthar ends Rajasthan’s 12-year Test drought
JAIPUR: The wait had lasted over a decade, but for Rajasthan’s cricket fraternity, the dry spell finally ended on a historic Saturday morning in New Chandigarh. Not since Pankaj Singh stepped out in the pristine India whites has a cricketer from the state earned a coveted Test cap. After a 12-year hiatus, the desert state is back in the Test arena, thanks to a young left-arm spinner from Sriganganagar, Manav Suthar. With this monumental feat, 23-year-old Manav enters an elite club, becoming only the fifth cricketer from the state — after the legendary Salim Durani, Hanumant Singh, Parthasarthy Sharma and Pankaj Singh — to represent the state in Test cricket.Long before the national selectors took notice, the foundation for this historic moment was being laid in the domestic trenches. Vineet Saxena, the former Rajasthan player and senior men’s team coach in the 2022-23 season, vividly remembers the quiet morning during a Ranji Trophy match that year when he got his very first glimpse of Manav during a competitive game.“He was the guy who was getting players out in defense and in slips,” Saxena recalls.— BCCI (@BCCI) For an experienced mentor like him, wickets on a scorecard can sometimes be deceptive, but the technical purity of a dismissal reveals a bowler’s true ceiling. Saxena points out that what truly makes Manav an exceptional left-arm spinner is his ability to outsmart batsmen fundamentally, beating them when they are actively trying to protect their stumps.“So normally, when we look at a bowler, numbers don’t really suggest the way they pick the wickets. But if a bowler is getting a batsman out in his defense, that means that bowler has got really good quality,” the former state coach added. It was not just his tactical brilliance that caught the eye, but the incredible physical attributes of his bowling. Suthar possessed an innate ability to manipulate the ball in the air, giving it a heavy tweak that became a nightmare for domestic batters.“The second thing I observed was the revs on the ball that he gives, that is amazing,” Saxena says. “In our slang, we say that the ball is turning and drifting, and biting off the surface. So it is something to do with that revs that he is able to impart on the ball. This is something special that he has in him.”That special quality exploded into reality during Manav’s second Ranji Trophy season in 2022-23. The young spinner tore through opposition lineups, capturing 39 wickets in just six matches at an incredible economy of 2.90, punctuated by two five-wicket hauls and a match-winning ten-wicket haul.Yet, what makes Suthar the ideal modern cricketer, and why many are already looking at him as a potential successor to Ravindra Jadeja, is his immense all-around capability. Suthar was never content being a one-dimensional specialist.“In a game that season, he took five wickets against Pondicherry and just narrowly missed scoring a century. So that would have been a big, big feat,” Saxena notes. “He can develop into a good all-rounder. And in batting also, what I observed at that time was he was very keen to learn. So he had that mindset and attitude.”Naturally, any young left-arm orthodox spinner who can bat and rack up massive domestic numbers will draw immediate comparisons to Jadeja. As Manav officially embarks on his Test journey, the hype is palpable, but Saxena urges a balanced perspective while validating the youngster’s immense talent.“Jadeja is probably one of the greatest all-rounders India has produced. So I think as of now, it will be wrong to compare Manav with him. It’s a long way what Manav has to go to accomplish that,” Saxena says.Suthar’s adaptability became even more evident when he translated these red-ball performances into the high-stakes white-ball cricket. Saxena recalls how seamlessly the spinner held his own against some of the most feared, established pinch-hitters in the country, proving he is a genuine all-format asset.“Facing a star-studded Mumbai side in the practice games before Mushtaq Ali Trophy in Ahmedabad, he delivered a standout performance against Shivam Dube. Despite Dube’s notorious dominance over left-arm spinners, he choked the all-rounder’s scoring rate to under a run-a-ball and capped it off by dismissing him. That fearlessness wasn’t a one-off,”When the tournament officially got underway, Manav made his T20 debut as an Impact Player against Madhya Pradesh, tasked with containing an in-form Venkatesh Iyer.“Iyer is a good striker of the ball. In that game, he scored some 60 off 30 balls. Out of that, against Manav, it was just run-a-ball, and Manav bowled around 8 to 10 balls to him. So against pinch hitters also, he was able to contain them. He has that skill set for T20s as well. He is an all-format player, it’s not like he can only survive in the longer format,” he further added.

Why Mississippi State pitchers face most difficult test with season on line vs Georgia
ATHENS, GA — Tomas Valincius had very few issues with his first trip through Georgia baseball's batting order in the super regional Game 1.Mississippi State's ace pitcher only allowed one batter to reach base through the first three innings. But everything changed in the fourth inning, even after No. 14 MSU took a seven-run lead. That's when No. 3 Georgia's onslaught began, scoring 13 runs in the next five innings to win Game 1 of the Athens Super Regional, 13-12, at Foley Field on June 6.It ended as the worst start of the season for Valincius (11-2, 3.97 ERA) with a season-high seven runs allowed in 4⅓ innings. The relief pitchers who followed him struggled to get outs. And with a bullpen that's been a weakness, Mississippi State is in a precarious spot with the season on the line.MSU (43-18) must beat Georgia (50-12) twice in a row to make the College World Series with Game 2 on June 7 (11 a.m. CT, ESPN).That means someone from the bullpen will need to pitch shutdown innings, which has been difficult for MSU to find this season against Georgia's elite offense. Mississippi State is 0-5 vs Georgia this season. The Game 1 loss also dropped Mississippi State to 4-8 in one-run games."Obviously you can't feel great, right?" first-year Mississippi State coach Brian O'Connor said about his bullpen status for Game 2. "We just couldn't hold them down. We needed somebody to go out there and just kind of hold the game a little bit for more than one inning, and we didn't do that."That said, we have more guys available. We'll pour everything into tomorrow and do whatever it takes to win tomorrow and get to a Monday game. And then, it's all hands on deck." Mississippi State's pitching status for Game 2 vs GeorgiaMSU used four relievers in Game 1 — Jack Bauer, Ben Davis, Dane Burns and Maddox Webb — but all of them struggled except for Webb, who got one out on eight pitches. Burns allowed the go-ahead three-run home run by Michael O'Shaughnessy in the eighth inning. That means key relievers like Tyler Pitzer, Maddox Miller and Jack Gleason haven't been used yet.MORE: Mississippi State baseball lands first transfer after Game 1 super regional loss vs GeorgiaMississippi State will start Ryan McPherson (4-1, 2.81 ERA) with Duke Stone, MSU's third starting pitcher, as the wildcard. Stone could come out of the bullpen when McPherson is done. He warmed up in the bullpen during Game 1 but did not enter. "He needs to get us off to a good start and attack them," O'Connor said of McPherson.Georgia will counter with Caden Aoki (9-1, 3.86 ERA) who began the season as a reliever but frequently has started games late in the season. He faced Mississippi State twice earlier this season, but both as a reliever. He combined in 4⅓ innings to allow one earned run with both appearances in the April series at Dudy Noble Field. But if Mississippi State can't get better pitching in Game 2, it will have to win another high-scoring game that probably favors Georgia. Georgia scored 13 runs in Game 1 without suspended All-SEC third baseman Tre Phelps, who returns in Game 2."I think both teams know each team's secret now," Georgia coach Wes Johnson said. "After five (games), we're not going to fool anybody. So now, it's really coming down to who can execute the most pitches at a certain time in the game."Sam Sklar is the Mississippi State beat reporter for The Clarion Ledger. New York Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox: Will Warren vs. Ranger Suárez
NEW YORK, NY - MAY 19: Will Warren #29 of the New York Yankees pitches during the game against the Toronto Blue Jays at Yankee Stadium on May 19, 2026 in New York, New York. (Photo by New York Yankees/Getty Images) | Getty Images Will Warren versus Ranger Suárez represents the perfect pitching matchup to highlight the difference between these two teams in the success of developing starting pitchers in-house. While the Red Sox felt compelled to go outside the organization and spend big on a mid-level starter—in other words, someone who wasn’t necessarily signed to anchor the rotation—the Yankees filled out their staff with the likes of Warren and are way better off for it.The pitcher with the best winning percentage in the AL this season, entering this game with seven wins and just one loss, Warren has benefited from outstanding run support, such as the 13 runs the Yankees scored at the A’s in his last start. Accustomed to pitching on the road as of late, this will only be Warren’s second start at home in the last 30 days. Normally that wouldn’t warrant mention, but the splits in 2026 are stark enough for Warren that it is worthwhile bringing it up. Warren enters this game with a 3.96 ERA in 36.1 innings at home, nearly two runs higher than the 2.25 mark he has on five starts away from Yankee Stadium. This difference hasn’t affected Warren’s record (4-1 at Yankee Stadium), but that has more to do with the level of support from the offense than anything else. The emphasis on run support for Warren is even more pertinent when you consider that the Yankees will be facing a left-hander without their two lefty mashers, Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton. Stanton’s been out for quite some time, but Judge’s recent injury dramatically affects this offense in a way that can’t possibly be overstated. The production Ben Rice and Cody Bellinger have brought to the table against southpaws increases its importance tenfold with the lineup’s current construction. The positive side about this specific matchup is that Suárez has reverse splits, allowing way more damage against left-handed hitters. While righties have an OPS below .600 against the Red Sox starter, lefties are up to a .770 mark. These splits show up in the track record against individual hitters. Back from their NL East days, Jazz Chisholm Jr. has a .300 batting average in 20 at-bats against Suárez. Ryan McMahon also has terrific numbers in a sizeable sample size against the Red Sox starter, but one couldn’t pass up Amed Rosario and his two homers in nine at-bats against the southpaw. How to watchLocation: Yankee Stadium — Bronx, NYFirst pitch: 7:35 pm ETTV broadcast: FOXRadio broadcast: WFAN 660/101.9 FM, WADO 1280, WEEI 93.7 FM, WCCM 1490 AM (SP), WESX 1230 AM (SP)Online stream: MLB.tvFor updates, follow us on BlueSky, Twitter, and Instagram, and like us on Facebook.Saturday Night Baseball.#RepBXpic.twitter.com/08uoiFEHBl— New York Yankees (@Yankees) June 6, 2026Saturday night plans. pic.twitter.com/7RIdAxY8EH— Red Sox (@RedSox) June 6, 2026Join the conversation!Sign up for a user account and get:Fewer adsCreate community postsComment on articles, community postsRec comments, community postsNew, improved notifications system!

East Limestone's Brown led Indians to best season in over a decade
Jun. 6—CAPSHAW — Adam Brown said it was a season five years in the making. The East Limestone baseball coach said his team of 12 seniors had been building toward this season for a long time and it paid off in a big way. The Indians finished with a 25-11 record, won the Class 5A, Area 16 championship and reached the Elite Eight for the first time since 2015.Because of this, Brown was chosen as The Daily's Class 5A-7A baseball coach of the year."It was my first time as a player or coach ever making it out of the first round (of the playoffs) and it was an unbelievable ride," Brown said. "It will forever be something I will remember."While it may have been the best season the Indians have had in over a decade, it wasn't something that came as a surprise. With so many seniors on the roster, Brown said the team was confident going into the season."We had a lot of old guys with a lot of experience who had spent five long years getting to this point," Brown said. "It certainly wasn't easy because we had a tough area, but we knew we had the guys to get it done."Brown said one of the highlights of the season was defeating Madison Academy, which finished runner-up in Class 5A last year, to win the area championship."A couple years ago we won the first game of the series at home against Madison Academy and then went to their place. We were up 4-0 in the bottom of the seventh, allowed five runs and ended up losing the series and our playoff spot," Brown said. "This year we're in the same scenario; we had a lead in the last inning and they loaded the bases. Then Jacob Brooks comes in and gets three big outs."It was kind of ironic that that's how we won the area and it was such a cool moment to see these guys that had put in so much work finally get over the hump."While East Limestone may be losing 12 seniors, Brown said the future is bright."We're losing some good players, some that started since they were freshmen, but they left a stamp on this program," Brown said. "We have a lot of talented young guys coming up that have now seen what it takes to be successful. We're going in the right direction and I think East Limestone is going to be sticking around for a long time."— caleb.suggs@decaturdaily.com or 256-340-2395. Twitter @CalebSuggs2

Braves-Twins trade prediction sends $100M disgruntled Silver Slugger, Gold Glove winner to Atlanta
Braves-Twins trade prediction sends $100M disgruntled Silver Slugger, Gold Glove winner to Atlanta originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Atlanta Braves are sitting atop all of Major League Baseball with 44 wins after winning another series against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday. The Braves have been the best team in baseball, but they would still like to add a few more pieces.Atlanta is just another starter or two away from having the best rotation in baseball, and it is also looking for an impact bat in the outfield. Braves general manager Alex Anthopoulos has hinted at being aggressive at the trade deadline.“I fully expect and hope that we will be engaged in trades come July. I'm not trying to overly excite anybody or promise anything. But if we're playing the way we are right now, we're going to be in there,” Anthopoulos said. For Atlanta, it is simply a matter of what will be available and what Anthopoulos is willing to give up. Bleacher Report’s Tim Kelly believes the Braves should pursue hometown star Byron Buxton of the Minnesota Twins.“Even scarier would be if president of baseball operations Alex Anthopoulos finds a way to add an impact bat in left field. Would Buxton being willing to waive his no-trade clause—and potentially move to left field—if it meant chasing a World Series with his hometown team,” Kelly wrote. It may ultimately come down to whether Buxton is willing to waive his no-trade clause, but he has reportedly had some issues with the Twins' front office. That frustration with the organization could be what convinces him to approve a deal.“It's been months of upheavals for the Minnesota Twins and, because of roster changes, turnover in the dugout and front office, and an uncertain commitment level from ownership, the future is uncertain. That uncertainty hasn't sat well with franchise cornerstone Byron Buxton, especially insofar as his future with the Twins is concerned,” CBS Sports’ Dayn Perry wrote.Buxton would likely become the Braves' primary left fielder and would solidify their outfield. Such a move would also likely allow Mauricio Dubón to return to shortstop on a more regular basis.Buxton is on a $100 million contract, which is right in line with Ronald Acuña Jr.'s deal. An All-Star, Silver Slugger, and Gold Glove winner, Buxton would give the Braves yet another dangerous addition to an already loaded lineup.Phillies predicted to trade for Twins' disgruntled $100M Silver Slugger, Gold Glove winnerYankees predicted to trade for $32M 2-time Cy Young winner to supercharge World Series dreamsDodgers, Braves, Blue Jays get concerning Tarik Skubal trade update after Tigers' hot streakBraves' Chris Sale name drops Atlanta's versatile bullpen 'secret weapon' after strong start

Ryan Bucu Joins Rams Cheerleaders After Breaking Barriers on UCLA Dance Team
With graduation just a few days away, Ryan Bucu is continuing to break down gender barriers within cheerleading. After becoming the second male dancer on UCLA’s dance team, Bucu is joining the Los Angeles Rams cheerleaders for the 2026 season.UCLA Dance Team member Ryan Bucu sits and holds up four fingers. The second male member of the team has amassed more than 22,000 followers on Instagram and 18,000 followers on TikTok. (Leydi Cris Cobo Cordon/Daily Bruin senior staff)Devin Mallory was the first male dancer on UCLA’s dance team in 2019. Bucu became the second when he made the team on his second attempt as a junior last year. Bucu told the Daily Bruin he was inspired by Mallory’s story and wants to continue inspiring younger generations of male dancers and cheerleaders.“Being able to have that title as the second male member in history, I will forever carry that with me and within my dance legacy,” Bucu said, per the Daily Bruin. “I need to always be performing for everyone in the crowd and showing younger generations that if you want to grow up and dance as well, become a cheerleader for a major university, … that you can do it.”By Joining the Rams, Bucu is Building Space for Men in Cheerleading The Rams became the first NFL team to feature male cheerleaders on its squad in 2018. As of 2026, there are still several NFL teams, like the Las Vegas Raiders and Dallas Cowboys, that do not have male cheerleaders.Rams cheerleader Quinton Peron stands on the field during the NFL Super Bowl LII football game between the New England Patriots and Los Angeles Rams, Sunday, Feb. 3, 2019 in Atlanta. Photo Credit: Ben Liebenberg/NFL/2019 National Football LeagueThe Rams currently have four male cheerleaders on its roster. Bucu will be added to that group next season.“Why I auditioned for the Rams is because I want to continue showing male visibility in spaces that may not be conventional,” Bucu said. “(I value) showing that male cheerleaders are a thing and pushing that agenda that males can be dancers and cheerleaders as well as females, too.”There is still a long way to go in creating a welcoming space for men in cheerleading. But Bucu is helping the sport take steps in the right direction. The post Ryan Bucu Joins Rams Cheerleaders After Breaking Barriers on UCLA Dance Team appeared first on LA Sports Report.
