DraftKings has released early betting lines for notable games in the 2026 season, and BYU-Notre Dame in Provo on October 17 and BYU-Utah in Salt Lake City on November 7 are two of the games.BYU is an early 10.5-point underdog to Notre Dame and a 3-point road underdog to to the Utes. The BYU-Utah line suggests that it would be a pick ’em on a neutral field. Notre Dame is expected to be one of the best teams in college football and currently has the second best odds to win the national championship, behind Ohio State. If the Irish are undefeated coming into Provo they could be ranked #1. Notre Dame will be heavy favorites in each of their first six games before they come to Provo.BYU and Utah, meanwhile, each are tied with the second best odds to win the Big 12. Texas Tech is the betting favorite despite the looming likelihood that QB Brendan Sorsby will be ruled ineligible this season. Texas Tech has +100 odds win the conference while BYU and Utah are +600. There is a big gap after the Cougs and Utes, with Kansas State at +1400 to win the Big 12 and Houston +1600.

Dodgers Make Roster Move After Losing Tyler Glasnow to 60-Day IL
The Los Angeles Dodgers have freed up a spot on the 40-man roster with Tyler Glasnow being moved to the 60-day injured list. The Dodgers have missed Glasnow for a long time, dating back to May 6th, when he left a game with back spasms. Glasnow is one of the tallest baseball players in the league, which leaves him prone to back issues. During a game on the road vs. the Astros, his back flared up as it has for a good portion of his life. He has been throwing on and off, but his return still seems a way off. Mandatory Credit: Kiyoshi Mio-Imagn ImagesWith the roster spot, the Dodgers are adding Nick Frasso, a righty, to the 40-man roster, allowing him to be an option for the team to call up in case of an injury. Frasso will be staying in Oklahoma City for the time being, where he has posted a 4.85 ERA in 11 relief appearances. He is a former Toronto Blue Jays draft pick who has floated between both Toronto and the Dodgers. What does Nick Frasso bring to the Dodgers?Frasso is another tall pitcher, measuring at six feet, five inches. He is an LA native, coming out of Loyola Marymount University. He was brought on a minor league deal over the offseason after he was non-tendered by the Dodgers. He has a pedigree of being a top 100 prospect at different points in his career. Golden Tempo wins the Belmont Stakes after also taking the Kentucky Derby
Belmont Stakes to host rematch of the top 3 Kentucky Derby finishers 00:31 Golden Tempo surged to victory in the 2026 Belmont Stakes on Saturday at Saratoga Springs in New York, capturing the third and final win of the Triple Crown, just a month after winning the Kentucky Derby. With jockey Jose Ortiz aboard, Golden Tempo charged down the stretch at Saratoga Race Course to win the Belmont, holding off Commandment before the finish line at the historic track.Commandment was second, and favorite Renegade third. The pace was not nearly as fast as it was at Churchill Downs, yet Golden Tempo still was able to close in time to win the 1 1/4-mile race in 2:03.49.Golden Tempo made Cherie DeVaux the first woman to train a Kentucky Derby winner. She was looking to be the second at the Belmont after Jena Antonucci in 2023 with Archangelo. DeVaux was born in Saratoga Springs and began her training career at the track.Golden Tempo was not able to sweep this year's series because Derby winner Golden Tempo skipped the Preakness Stakes in Maryland on May 16.Renegade, the Kentucky Derby runner-up trained by Hall of Famer Todd Pletcher, was bet down to 8-5 after opening at 2-1 on the morning line. The rest of the money was spread out significantly, with Derby winner Golden Tempo, Chief Wallabee, Commandment and Emerging Market all 5-1.The long shots in the field of nine were Pletcher-trained Powershift at 12-1, Growth Equity at 13-1, Ottinho at 19-1 and Vitruivian Man at 20-1.The Belmont is being run at Saratoga Race Course in upstate New York for a third and final time while its traditional home on the border of Queens and Long Island was demolished and rebuilt. The race is set to return to Belmont Park next year. The Belmont, known as the Test of the Champion, is usually the longest of the three Triple Crown races at 1 1/2 miles. But Saturday's race was 1 1/4 miles — the same length as the Derby — because of the configuration of the main racetrack at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, New York.

Meet the horses that ran in the 2026 Belmont Stakes
Remembering the legendary 1973 Belmont Stakes when Secretariat won the Triple Crown 05:42 The Belmont Stakes hosted a New York rematch of the top two finishing horses from the Kentucky Derby Saturday to wrap up horse racing's Triple Crown for 2026.Derby winner Golden Tempo, who entered Saturday's race with 9-2 odds, defeated eight challengers to claim the Belmont Stakes at Saratoga Springs in New York. Commandment came in second and Renegade finished third. Golden Tempo became the 13th horse to win the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont. Golden Tempo's trainer Cherie DeVaux, who was born in Saratoga Springs, made history by becoming the first woman to saddle a winner at the Kentucky Derby. She became the second woman to train a Belmont winner, after Jena Antonucci won with Arcangelo in 2023. The Belmont, the finale in the trio of races for 3-year-olds that make up the Triple Crown. No horse swept this year's series because Golden Tempo skipped the Preakness Stakes in Maryland on May 16.2026 Belmont Stakes horses and oddsRenegade, who lost the Derby to Golden Tempo by a neck, was picked as the morning-line favorite for the Belmont with 2-1 odds. The odds changed as bettors placed their wagers ahead of Saturday's approximate post time of 7 p.m. ET.Here's a complete list of the horses in the Belmont Stakes in order by their post position with their morning-line odds:1. Vitruvian Man, 30-12. Powershift, 12-13. Chief Wallabee, 3-14. Renegade, 2-15. Ottinho, 20-16. Growth Equity, 12-17. Commandment, 6-18. Emerging Market, 6-19. Golden Tempo, 9-2The Belmont, known as the Test of the Champion, is usually the longest of the three Triple Crown races at 1 1/2 miles. But Saturday's race was 1 1/4 miles — the same length as the Derby — because of the configuration of the main racetrack at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, New York, where the Belmont has been held since 2024.The race is expected to return to its home of Belmont Park on New York's Long Island in 2027 following a major redevelopment project that's set to be completed later this year. Before his second-place finish at the Derby on the first Saturday of May, Renegade won the Arkansas Derby in March and Florida's Sam F. Davis Stakes in February. The bay colt also came in second place in December's Remsen Stakes at Aqueduct Racetrack in New York City.Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. rode Renegade in the Belmont, as he did in the Kentucky Derby. The 33-year-old was seeking his third Belmont victory after winning with Mo Donegal in 2022 and Creator in 2016. In this year's Preakness, Ortiz was aboard Talkin, who came in 12th place.Renegade is trained by Todd Pletcher, who teamed up with Ortiz for Mo Donegal's Belmont victory. Pletcher has also saddled three other winners at the Belmont: Tapwrit in 2017, Palace Malice in 2013 and the filly Rags to Riches in 2007. Pletcher had another horse in Saturday's race: Powershift, who was given 12-1 odds in the morning line.Chief Wallabee, who was given 3-1 morning-line odds, finished fourth in the Kentucky Derby. The bay colt came into the Triple Crown opener after finishing third in the Florida Derby in March behind fellow Belmont competitor Commandment, who won the race. A month before the Florida Derby, Chief Wallabee came in second behind Commandment at the Fountain of Youth Stakes in Florida.Junior Alvarado was aboard Chief Wallabee for the Kentucky Derby, and he had the mount in the Belmont. The 40-year-old rode Sovereignty to victory in last year's Derby and Belmont. At this year's Preakness, Alvarado finished in 13th place aboard Crupper.Alvarado teamed up with trainer Bill Mott for Sovereignty's wins in Kentucky and New York, and the two were together again for Chief Wallabee's run at the Belmont. Mott has also saddled another winner in the Triple Crown's third jewel: Drosselmeyer in 2010.Golden Tempo raced in New Orleans ahead of the Run for the Roses, winning January's Lecomte Stakes and finishing third in February's Risen Star Stakes. The bay colt also came in third in March's Louisiana Derby, which was won by fellow Belmont contender Emerging Market.Jose Ortiz, who rode Golden Tempo to victory in the Kentucky Derby, had the mount in Belmont. The 32-year-old made it to the winner's circle with Tapwrit in 2017 and came close with several horses who came in second: Nest in 2022, Tacitus in 2019 and Gronkowski in 2018. At the Preakness, Ortiz finished third aboard Chip Honcho. In addition to his wins at the Florida Derby and Fountain of Youth Stakes, Commandment, who was given 6-1 morning-line odds, also won Florida's Mucho Macho Man Stakes in January. But the bay colt wasn't able to keep his winning streak going at the Kentucky Derby and came in seventh.John Velazquez was aboard Commandment in the Belmont. The 54-year-old came in 11th in both the Derby and the Preakness, with Further Ado and Corona de Oro, respectively. Velazquez has ridden two Belmont winners — Union Rags in 2012 and Rags to Riches in 2007 — and he's come in second three times, with Fly Down in 2010, Dunkirk in 2009 and Bluegrass Cat in 2006.Trainer Brad Cox was going for his second Belmont win with Commandment. He went to the winner's circle at the Belmont for the first time in 2021 with Essential Quality. The horse was one of two Cox saddled in that year's Kentucky Derby to finish in the money, with Essential Quality coming in third and Mandaloun winning the race.Emerging Market also received 6-1 odds in the morning line. After winning the Louisiana Derby, the chestnut colt came in 10th place in the Kentucky Derby.Flavien Prat rode Emerging Market in the Derby, and he had the mount in the Belmont. It was the 33-year-old's sixth straight year at the race, with his first ride being his best so far, finishing second aboard Hot Rod Charlie in 2021. At the Preakness, Prat had the mount when Iron Honor came in second.Iron Honor is trained by Chad Brown, who saddled Emerging Market in the Belmont as well as Growth Equity and Ottinho, who were given 12-1 odds and 20-1 odds in the morning line, respectively.Like Prat, this year was Brown's sixth looking for a win at the Belmont. He came close in 2018, when Gronkowski came in second.Only one horse in this year's morning line was given the long-shot odds of 30-1: Vitruvian Man.

No. 1 Castlewood quiets No. 2 MCM to claim Class B softball championship
Jun. 6—ABERDEEN — For the second time in four seasons, Castlewood stands atop the Class B softball landscape.Behind a big third inning, the top-seeded Warriors took down No. 2 seed McCook Central/Montrose 9-2 in the Class B title game on Saturday afternoon at the Players Softball Complex.Castlewood finished its championship campaign with a 21-4 record to become the first multi-time state title-winning program in Class B during the brief four-year history of softball sanctioned by the South Dakota High School Activities Association. The Warriors have played in the title game in three of the four seasons, also winning in 2023, the inaugural season.MCM wasted no time striking first in the title tilt, as leadoff hitter Ella DeKnikker reached on an error and managed to score on a passed ball moments later before the game's first out was recorded. But from there, Castlewood was in control. The Warriors promptly tied the game in the bottom half of the first inning. After the Fighting Cougars loaded the bases in the third but missed out on a prime scoring chance, the Warriors turned the tide firmly in their favor. Five extra-base hits, two singles and a hit-by-pitch in the bottom of the third snowballed into a six-run frame for the No. 1 seed.MCM scratched across one more run in the fifth, but Class B's most potent offense was limited to just three hits off Castlewood pitcher Claire Horn, who surrendered seven walks but collected nine strikeouts to post the win in the circle.Cydni Kudrna went 4-for-4 at the plate, including a double and a triple, scoring three runs and driving in one to power the Warriors' offense that notched 13 total hits, eight of which went for extra bases. Sophia Kudrna also had a double and triple for her two hits, and Lucy Jacobsen added two base knocks. Kayla Goens and Natalie Akin each had two runs batted in.Mya Morrison, Ashtyn DeKnikker and Josalyn Traupel had one hit apiece for the Fighting Cougars, and Morrison also drew one walk. Cami McGuire reached three times via walk, and Brenna Bartlet walked twice. Zaidee Huls had two strikeouts and no walks allowed in a complete game loss in the circle.MCM, which was making its Class B softball tournament debut, ended its season with a 22-3 record.Placement round scoresChampionship: Castlewood 9, McCook Central/Montrose 2Third place: Gayville-Volin 7, Hanson 0Fifth place: Freeman/Marion/Freeman Academy 9, Redfield 3Seventh place: Avon 13, Florence/Henry 3All-tournament teamCastlewood: Cydni Kudrna, jr.; Claire Horn, so.; Sophia Kudrna, so.; Natalie Akin, sr.McCook Central/Montrose: Mya Morrison, jr.; Ashtyn DeKnikker, sr.; Zaidee Huls, sr.Gayville-Volin: Paisley Dimmer, so.; Jolie Westrum, jr.Hanson: Jozlynn Tegethoff, jr.; Jacey Schoenrock, jr.Freeman/Marion/Freeman Academy: Claire Loofbourrow, jr.; Harli Ross, jr.Redfield: Kinley Smith, sr.Avon: Kaydence Metzger, so.Florence/Henry: Elizabeth Reiter, sr.

Agent 0 delivers Aces' first home win
Jun 6, 2026; Las Vegas, Nevada, USA; Las Vegas Aces guard Jackie Young (0) congratulates center A'ja Wilson (22) after a victory against the Golden State Valkyries at Michelob Ultra Arena.LAS VEGAS – The Aces were staring down the barrel of a third straight home defeat to start the season on Saturday. The champs trailed the Golden State Valkyries by a couple of possessions down the stretch of their Commissioner’s Cup clash at the Michelob ULTRA Arena, and things were starting to look a little bleak once again. As Becky Hammon pointed out during practice on Friday, the Aces had lost six of their nine fourth quarters heading into this one. And those demons were creeping back in until Las Vegas hit the big red ‘Agent 0’ button. It was a ‘break glass in case of emergency’ situation, and Jackie Young answered the call. She poured in 14 of her 27 points in the fourth quarter, guiding the Aces (7-3) to their seventh win of the campaign — and the first at home. Young produced her season-high in scoring right when the Aces needed her most. She went 8-15 from the field and a sizzling 6-8 from beyond the arc. She was the perfect complement to another stellar outing from A’ja Wilson — who led all scorers with 28 points. Wilson completed her double-double with 14 rebounds. Young added five boards and five assists. Agent 0 back on track Young started the season off slowly — by her standards. Averaging 12.2 points per game through 10, the Aces were able to find a way to navigate through Young’s scoring struggles. Young’s tough stretch hit its nadir on May 17 and May 23 — when she went back-to-back games without scoring a single point. However, since then, it has been back to business as usual for the former No. 1 pick. Over the last four games, Young is averaging just north of 20 points, and with her scoring catching up to her ever-improving playmaking, the Aces are an even scarier force to be reckoned with.Young took a moment to reflect on everything that she has had to go through to get to this point after scoring 14 of the Aces’ last 21 points in the fourth quarter against the Valkyries. Young went 3-3 from deep and 5-5 at the line in the fourth. She had 22 points in the second half. “It’s hard to do what I do on the court when I’m feeling heavy,” she said. “I was just kind of trying to balance (life and basketball) and take some time to get back to myself. My teammates were there for me throughout the process, so shoutout to them, the coaching staff, my family, and friends for helping me and being there by my side. “There’s a lot of talk when things like that happen, but I’m human, and we all go through stuff. I don’t think it was necessarily a basketball thing. I’ve been putting in the work, I always put in the work. It was just about getting past that heavy part.” Never a doubt Not only did Young deliver the goods for the Aces, she did so in a huge spot, when the game was completely hanging in the balance. After the Aces took a narrow 38-35 lead into half-time, behind 20 points on 7-11 shooting from Wilson, the back-and-forth pattern continued in the third and fourth quarters. The hosts just outscored the Valkyries 46-44 in the second half to secure the all-important win. The magnitude of Young’s performance grows greater when you consider that Wilson took just one shot in the third quarter and only five more in the fourth — with the Valkyries determined to get beat by anyone but the four-time MVP. Unfortunately for the visitors, Young was there when the Aces called and arrived right on time. She hit big shot after big shot, proving her worth once again — not that Hammon needed her to. “There was never a doubt about Jackie Young in my mind,” Hammon said. “I see her work too much, and I have an unbelievable belief in her. I think she’s awesome.“There is just a human element where life be lifing, and (the players) have to work through that stuff, and you just have to support and encourage them along the way. But there was never a doubt that (she was going to be fine). Her work is too good. It was just a matter of time.” Resolve testedThe Aces’ resolve was tested on both sides of the ball by an extremely game Valkyries team. Gabby Williams gave Las Vegas all it could handle with 27 points, while Veronica Burton chipped in with 15.However, the Aces stumbled but did not fall. And that’s exactly what Hammon wanted to see from her group late in a close game. They had let one too many of those slip and getting this victory over the line sure felt good. “We just closed better,” Hammon said. “We started the fourth giving up a couple of threes, which sent me over the moon and back again, but we closed. We started defending a little bit better. And we just found a way to win. That’s another skill of a great team. But I’m still going to be on them about those fourth quarter W’s. We have to start winning more of those.”Gray back in the record booksChelsea Gray’s six assists against the Valkyries saw her pass Hammon (1,133 atop the franchise all-time leaderboard. Gray added 12 points, 6 rebounds, and a pair of steals. Hammon joked that she’s going to have to lace them up again since all of her records are being broken. On a serious note, the Aces’ coach was happy to see Gray overtake her, saying that records are meant to be broken and that she was hoping that this generation of players would be better than hers.Gray was solely focused on getting the win. She said she was aware that she was close to the record but was glad she forgot about it before the game.Up next for the defending champions, the Aces will host the Seattle Storm (3-9) — who have lost their last five — on Monday night.

Gardner Minshew ranked in middle of league among backup QBs
The Arizona Cardinals made three offseason moves at quarterback — they released Kyler Murray, signed veteran Gardner Minshew and drafted Carson Beck. Jacoby Brissett is the presumed starter after starting the final 12 games of 2025, making Minshew the expected QB2. Minshew is experienced as a starter and a backup with 47 career starts. He was the backup to Patrick Mahomes for the Kansas City Chiefs last year. Where does he rank among backups?According to SI.com's Gilbert Manzano, he is right in the middle of the pack in the league, coming in at No. 14. Minshew, who has 47 career starts, might be asked to play a lot in Arizona this season if the team doesn’t find a contract resolution with Jacoby Brissett. There’s also rookie third-round pick Carson Beck, but Minshew’s years of experience would likely give him the inside track toward winning the starting job if Brissett isn’t around this summer.Minshew did struggle in his nine starts with the Raiders in 2024, but the year before, he kept the Colts’ playoff hopes alive until the season finale. He has good days and bad, like most backups, but the highs can be impressive.MInshew has taken all the first-team reps in the offseason so far, as Brissett has been holding out for a new contract, seeking to be paid like a starter if he is going to be a starter. It has been a while since Minshew was impactful, but his starting experience and his success should put him higher on this list than Shedeur Sanders, who hasn't accomplished much in the NFL. He would be one of the lowest-ranked starters if he were a starter. A middle-of-the-road backup? There are worse things to be. NBA rescinds Knicks big man Mitchell Robinson's controversial technical foul against Victor Wembanyama
The NBA announced Saturday it has rescinded the technical foul against New York Knicks big man Mitchell Robinson from Game 2 of the 2026 NBA Finals. It was a controversial tech, as the officials hit Robinson for pushing away Victor Wembanyama as the two were fighting for position in the paint in the second quarter. What was not called, however, was Wembanyama similarly pushing Robinson a second earlier.Wembanyama made the resulting free throw to give the Spurs a 47-42 lead. The Knicks would go on to win a 105-104 thriller, giving them a 2-0 lead in the NBA Finals and a 13-game winning streak, which goes back to their first-round series against the Atlanta Hawks.Rescinding the tech obviously won’t affect the game, but it will save Robinson a compulsory fine and won’t go into his count for an automatic suspension.Play 2026 Soccer Pick 'Em with FOX One and make your picks for the world's biggest soccer tournamentRobinson, who is playing a week after undergoing surgery to repair a stress fracture in his right pinky finger, finished the game with 7 points on 2-of-2 shooting, 3 rebounds, 1 block, 1 steal and 1 turnover.Wembanyama led all scorers with 29 points on 11-of-21 shooting plus 9 rebounds and 4 blocks, but his blunders in the final minute opened the door for the New York win. Robinson and starter Karl-Anthony Towns have been doing a good job against him overall, in arguably the most important matchup of the series.Game 3 is scheduled for Sunday at Madison Square Garden, with ticket prices astronomically high and President Trump expected to attend.

Byron's dynamic duo strut their stuff at state meet
Jun. 6—ST. MICHAEL — Between Carson Heimer and Beau Nicklay, Byron track and field coach Dan Storlie has a couple of athletes who won't take no for an answer. At least not without a fight. Those competitive juices are what got them where they were Saturday, as two of the top performers in the Class 2A boys track and field meet at St. Michael-Albertville High School."They are almost the same guy," Storlie said. "It's great to have the competition we do between those two."The specialty for both when it comes to running is the 100 meters. On Saturday, it was Heimer coming through with a second-place finish in the event, timed in a lusty 10.74. Nicklay wasn't far behind; his time of 10.80 was good for fifth.Heimer has come a long way since injuring his foot at the tail end of the football season. The star running back had surgery on and didn't return to running until about three weeks ago. After a rough start in which he failed to get below 11 seconds, Heimer took off. His best time this season is 10.66."I got a lot of help from my sprint coach, Ben Halder," said Heimer, dividing up the credit. "But I am very happy with where I am at right now."Besides the 100, Heimer also took part in the high jump, where he cleared 6-foot-4 for fifth place overall. He's gone as high as 6-8, so he wasn't completely satisfied with that state showing.Nicklay also has a field event, the long jump. He was good enough to finish second in that, the junior clearing 22-7 1/2.Those two were also part of a 4x200 relay team that finished fourth overall (42.57).The Pine Island 4x200 relay team of Cooper Rutten, Owen Harstad, Aspen Gorman and Peyton Loftus came into the state meet seeded seventh. But they made that seed look silly in the preliminaries when they finished first. Then they proved just how for real they are in the finals when once again they were the first to finish. They were clocked in 1:27.55."We are to the moon happy with what these guys accomplished," Pine Island coach Matt Northrop said. "It's our first time competing in Class 2A, and I just thought we represented our school and our section really well."Cooper Rutten, a junior who runs the lead leg in the 4x200, said they didn't know what to think entering the meet. But it quickly dawned on them how good they are. This is a group that broke its own school record three straight times, the state finals the latest occasion."After the prelims, we kind of surprised ourselves," Rutten said. "We had the fastest time. From there, we knew what to do. Today, this is the greatest thing that has ever happened to us. It's a credit to this team and the amazing coaches we have. They just let us know that working hard is important and that you have to give it your all."Pine Island had two of those four relay runners finish in the top eight in the open 200. Harstad was seventh (22.43) and Loftus eighth (22.48).—After finishing second on Friday in the 3,200, Kasson-Mantorville senior David Obst ran a personal best in snaring a third place in the 1,600. Obst was timed in 4:18.02.—Austin's Triumph Ogbeide, one of the more versatile athletes in the state meet, finished third in the 110 hurdles. He was clocked at 14.64. Ogbeide also competed in the long jump, where he was 15th.—Stewartville's Thomas Lofgren finished fifth in the discus. Stewartville's Avery Nelson sets aside injury to win state triple jump competition
Jun. 6—ST. MICHAEL — Avery Nelson wasn't even sure she could compete in the state Class 2A track and field meet. The Stewartville freshman sensation tore the hamstring in her left leg a week ago in the Section 1-2A meet.Well, Nelson competed all right. After having a disappointing showing in the long jump on Friday where she finished 18th, Nelson was much more like herself Saturday at St. Michael-Albertville High School.Nelson used the day to come away a state champion in the triple jump. She sailed 39-feet-1, equaling a personal best."She had a devastating hamstring injury that made it look like she might not be able to keep going in the section meet," Stewartville coach Brandon Hoth said. Not close to 100 percent yet (Nelson guessing more like 60-70 percent), the freshman made things work anyway. She willed her way, which is how she does things.En route, she used her stubbornness to carry her."I feel like I am so stubborn that I just don't like to lose," said Nelson, who had to bow out the sprints in the section meet, events she also excels at. "Now, this gives me the motivation to work hard and get even better."Nelson has come a long way. When the season started, she was jumping more like 36 feet. But, step by step, she made herself into an elite triple jumper."I worked on my different phases of jumping and my coach had me lifting (weights) more than I'd done before," Nelson said. "I was lifting five to seven days per week."After getting a taste of being on top at state, Nelson is eager for more the next three years. She hopes to be competing next year in the 200 at state and also hopes to keep getting better in her best event, the triple jump."I want to do 40 feet in the triple jump," she said. "That is my main focus right now."Other than Nelson's championship showing in the triple jump, Section 1 didn't produce any other champions. Its next-best showing came in the 4x800, where Winona finished second in 9:09.83. That was just behind Orono's 9:09.50 time.—Winona's Calla Pike had a strong showing in the 800, finishing third in 2:14.13. Winona also received a sixth-place finish from Kaia Vandal in the shot put. She flung it 37-feet-8 3/4.—Byron's Lily Moon was eighth in the pole vault (10-6). Red Wing's Ann Stockton also managed an eighth place in the 100 hurdles (14.93).*Class 2A state meet record(Winner, Rochester-area finishers)4x800 — 1. Orono 9:09.50; 2. Winona (E. Heinrichs, R. New BYU alumni leader to build on ‘connection’
Derek Miller, president and CEO of the Salt Lake Chamber, speaks about Utah’s economic future during the One Utah Summit at the Grand America Hotel in Salt Lake City on Friday, April 12, 2024. | Photo by Scott G Winterton, Deseret News Sports isn’t everything, but to a school interested in keeping its alumni connected, it is a powerful way to pull it off. A newly graduated Derek Miller learned of that firsthand in 2000 when he went to work in Washington, D.C., and the BYU football team came to town. “I grew up (in Utah County) watching Gifford Nielsen, Steve Young, etc., but it wasn’t until I got outside of Utah and went to my first tailgate,” Miller told the “Y’s Guys” livestream show this week. “We all drove down to Charlottesville, and when I say we, I mean like all of northern Virginia drove down to Charlottesville and participated in that tailgate. It was like a whole new part of the BYU sports experience.”The Cougars rallied from a 21-0 deficit to beat Virginia 38-35 on an Owen Pochman field goal in overtime. As BYU prepares for the 2026 season, Miller, the CEO of the Salt Lake Chamber and Downtown Alliance, is also the new president of the BYU Alumni Association.“It’s so exciting,” he said. “I just pinch myself whenever I think that a kid who went to Mountain View (in Orem) gets to be the president of the alumni association, especially at this time and for lots of reasons.”Miller’s assignment, like his predecessors, is to keep the Cougars connected, past and present. In the eyes of Gov. Gary Herbert’s former chief of staff, BYU sports is the megaphone to spread the word, but service is the key to making a lasting difference.Community impactIn just three years as a power conference program, BYU has turned road games into a carnival of goodwill, with tailgates and service projects that often leave opposing fans confused and impressed — at the same time.“The thing we always hear, and it gets such great play on the local news across the country with these Big 12 schools and they talk about ‘BYU came to town and we held this service project, we collected all these books, we raised money for the widows of the local police and fire departments,’” Miller said. “It’s not just a game that came to town (that) by Monday you have forgotten who won. This leaves a mark on their hearts that they will never forget.”This fall, BYU will stage massive tailgates and Cougs Care service projects in Fort Collins, Colorado; Fort Worth, Texas; Orlando, Florida; Salt Lake City and Lawrence, Kansas. In addition, the goodwill concept will expand beyond sports to include the arts.“What I’m really excited about is that it will go layers deeper into the community because it won’t be focused only on a (sports) tailgate,” Miller said. “We are talking now when our musicians, when our Young Ambassadors, when any of our performing arts are going into these communities across the country. “Sports is obviously the big marquee, but there are some alums who don’t watch the sporting events. What is deep in their heart are these other things. For them to be able to connect to their fellow BYU alums as well as connect to their local community and whatever university they are visiting, it’s going to really expand this opportunity.”Free ice creamThe tradition of handing out free ice cream to visiting fans will resume Sept. 5 when Utah Tech kicks off against BYU at LaVell Edwards Stadium (6 p.m, ESPN+). Miller’s favorite distribution moment came last fall. Elder Gerrit W. Gong of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles noticed Miller and several others were leaving the president’s box early in the second quarter.“He saw a few of us standing up and asked, ‘Where are you going?’” said Miller, who explained they were going to hand out ice cream to the UCF fans.“I want to come help,” Elder Gong replied. And he did — walking up and down the north stands giving unsuspecting fans some of the best ice cream the BYU Creamery had to offer. “In The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints circles, Elder Gong blew up the internet by handing out the ice cream, and not just handing it, but passing it, too — spot on.”Bear Bachmeier completed 21 of 25 passes for 289 yards and a touchdown against the Knights. Elder Gong’s completion rate is unknown, but the UCF fans-turned-receivers caught and gobbled up everything the southpaw tossed at them.Special request There are over 500,000 BYU alumni living in all parts of the world. Miller addressed a group of the newest alums recently at commencement and delivered a message for Cougars everywhere.“I’d like to impress on every alum of what a special and unique place (it is) where they went to school. What makes it special and unique is because every experience they had was an opportunity to have a revelatory experience because it is an institution that is Christ-centered and prophetically led,” Miller said. “I told these graduates; the world is going to tell you to go make a name for yourself. I remember feeling that way – ‘Go make a name for myself now that I’m getting out of school.’ “But my challenge to them and to all alumni is you can do much better than that because you went to school at BYU — and that is, you can make a name for Christ in the world. What a special opportunity we have to do that.”Miller’s ‘most influential’ BYU alumniFootball coaches: LaVell Edwards (BYU), Kalani Sitake (BYU), Andy Reid (Chiefs), Tom Holmoe (Cal), Kyle Whittingham (Michigan), Steve Sarkisian (Texas), Mike Leach (Texas Tech).Says Miller ofLaVell Edwards:“It would be heresy if we didn’t say LaVell Edwards. My gosh, the field is named after him. He transformed the entire game, and not just the college game.”Quarterbacks: Steve Young, Jim McMahon, Robbie Bosco, Ty Detmer, Max Hall, Taysom Hill.Says Miller of Steve Young:“He just embodies BYU football at the quarterback position. So fun to watch and so fun to watch him go into the USFL and NFL and play for the 49ers. Nothing but great memories.”Basketball players: Kresimir Cosic, Tina Gunn, Danny Ainge, Jimmer FredetteSays Miller ofKresimir Cosic:“This one is even harder than the quarterback, but I’m going to say Cosic. I was on a riverboat cruise on the Danube about five years ago and there was a woman on that cruise from the former Yugoslavia. When I told her the story about how Kresimir came to BYU, she didn’t know that. She (only) knew him after as this great player in Yugoslavia. “She was not a member of the church, but I told her the story of how he was staying up late at night to translate the Book of Mormon into his native language and she was just crying. She was so moved. I think the influence that he’s had, I’m gonna put him as No. 1.” Civic leaders: Ezra Taft Benson (Secretary of Agriculture), Rex E. Lee (U.S. Solicitor General), Dallin H. Oaks (Utah Supreme Court Justice), Mitt Romney (Governor of Massachusetts, Utah senator, presidential candidate).Says Miller ofMitt Romney:“When we are talking about just civics, if it was anything else, if you hadn’t put that qualifier in, of course, I would say our prophet Dallin H. Oaks, but Mitt Romney would be the one who has had the greatest influence, in my mind, in our civic society.”Dave McCann is a sportswriter and columnist for the Deseret News and is a play-by-play announcer and show host for BYUtv/ESPN+. He co-hosts “Y’s Guys” at ysguys.com and is the author of the children’s book “C is for Cougar,” available at deseretbook.com.

Syndication: The RecordThe New York Knicks are expecting United States President Donald Trump to be in attendance for Monday night’s game 3 of the NBA Finals between the Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs in Madison Square Garden, and the team is warning fans about what it could mean for them.Ahead of Trump’s appearance at the game, the Knicks are warning fans about the additional security measures that will be in place, as the arena has officially instituted a “no bag” policy and is advising fans to severely limit the number of items they bring into the arena.‘No Bag Policy’Ahead of Trump’s presence at the game, the Knicks issued a statement to fans warning of the heightened security and the presence of the United States Secret Service.“As we move closer to Game 3 of the NBA Finals on Monday night, Madison Square Garden and the United States Secret Service want to help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all ticket holders by sharing important security procedures that will be in place,” the statement reads.“A strict no-bag policy will be in effect, and fans should make every effort to limit personal items to an absolute minimum. Fans should expect enhanced security measures when entering Madison Square Garden, including TSA-style screening procedures.”Additionally, the team is warning guests to arrive at least two hours before tip-off to allow additional time for screening and entry.Stephen A. Smith Wants Trump to Stay HomeWhile the President is obviously excited to be attending the game as a longtime New Yorker, not everyone is excited about him being in attendance.During his SiriusXM radio show Friday, Smith made it clear that he does not think that Trump should attend either of the games, though he insisted that the opinion had “nothing to do with politics.” Smith just thinks that Trump’s presence at the game would only make an already crazy atmosphere worse.“It has everything to do with him disrupting and contributing at the same time to the chaos that’s going to be existing at Madison Square Garden,” Smith said. “If it were Barack Obama coming to the Garden, I would say, ‘Stay home. Stay at the White House.’“I have been covering sports for over 30 years. And I’m telling you right now, come Monday, for Game 3 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden, I expect to see an environment I have never seen in my entire career covering sports. You don’t understand. You don’t understand.”The Knicks currently hold a 2-0 lead over the Spurs in the NBA Finals as the series heads to New York. The team has now won 13 straight playoff games and needs just two more wins to claim its first championship in 53 years, which it could get in Madison Square Garden next week. The post Knicks issue warning ahead of President Trump’s attendance to NBA Finals appeared first on The Comeback: Today’s Top Sports Stories & Reactions.

United States feeling confident going into World Cup off tight loss against Germany
CHICAGO (AP) — Antonee Robinson struck the ball perfectly with his left foot, and it rocketed into the corner of the goal. Surrounded by a delirious sellout crowd at Soldier Field, the defender celebrated with a cartwheel and a backflip. Not a bad way to go into the World Cup.Robinson's spectacular goal was the biggest highlight for the United States in a 2-1 loss to Germany on Saturday. It was the ninth consecutive loss for the U.S. against European opponents dating to 2022, but the Americans were encouraged by their performance in their final World Cup tuneup.“I mean against a really good team, I thought we were dangerous at times,” forward Christian Pulisic said. “We had good stretches of possession, defended well for good portions of it. And, yeah, I mean honestly, I think, we’re feeling good.”Members of the 1994 U.S. team were recognized on the field before the game. Coach Mauricio Pochettino started what figures to be close to his World Cup lineup, with Matt Freese in goal, Sergiño Dest at right back, Alex Freeman, Miles Robinson and Tim Ream in central defense, Antonee Robinson at left back, Tyler Adams and Malik Tillman in defensive midfield, Pulisic and Weston McKennie in advanced midfield and Folarin Balogun up front. The U.S. played without top defender Chris Richards, sidelined since tearing a pair of left ankle ligaments on May 17. Richards, Mark McKenzie or Auston Trusty could replace Miles Robinson in the World Cup opener on Friday against Paraguay. In its final test before the tournament, the U.S. generated a handful of promising scoring opportunities, led by Pulisic and Balogun. The 16th-ranked Americans controlled the last part of the first half and finished with 10 corner kicks, compared to two for the 10th-ranked Germans. But the U.S. also made a couple of costly mistakes that Pochettino will look to clean up in his final preparations for the World Cup.The U.S. has 14 wins, 10 losses and two draws since Pochettino took over as coach in October 2024.“We compete. Unlucky. I think was an even game,” Pochettino said. “If you see the stats, similar stats in some stats for us. I am so happy with the commitment and how the team was.”The Americans got off to a tough start when Adams was called for tripping Felix Nmecha with the German's back to the goal just 43 seconds into the game. Ream was picked by Nico Schlotterback on the resulting free kick, and a wide-open Kai Havertz broke past Miles Robinson and converted an easy header in the second minute. On Germany's final goal, Miles Robinson was late in stepping up as Leroy Sané got a short pass from Havertz and beat Freese to the far post in the 57th minute.“Disappointed that we lost, but many positives to take,” Antonee Robinson said. “I feel like conceding that early, we could have easily crumbled, and it could have been a very, very bad day to be going into the tournament with. But we fought back and at times played some really good football and looked good, looked competitive."Nothing on the U.S. side looked better than Antonee Robinson's fifth international goal in the 37th minute. Jonathan Tah’s headed clearance attempt on Pulisic’s corner kick went just outside the area, and Robinson had perfect form on his volley past Germany goalkeeper Oliver Baumann.“Sick. I mean, it’s a sick goal,” a smiling Pulisic said. The 28-year-old Robinson, who gave himself the nickname of “ Jedi ” when he was just a kid, said he had never scored a goal like that in a competitive game.It was reminiscent of Benny Feilhaber’s tiebreaking goal for the U.S. against Mexico in the 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup final at Soldier Field.“Going into a World Cup it means a lot to have that kind of in my mind that I’ve scored something like that and a bit of freedom to shoot again if I’m in that position,” Robinson said.___AP World Cup coverage: https://apnews.com/hub/fifa-world-cup

Jett Lawrence sweeps Hangtown motos for overall victory despite injury
RANCHO CORDOVA, California: Jett Lawrence swept the Hangtown Classic motos to win his first round in his second attempt after returning from a preseason injury. And yet, there are still questions surrounding him as the ankle continues to cause pain for the defending Motocross and SuperMotocross Champion. One of the open questions is how the race might have played out without a red flag and complete restart. On the initial start, Hunter earned the holeshot over Jett. The battle to pass Hunter would have been fierce, but a hard crash for Justin Cooper on Lap 1 forced the riders back to the gate. Hunter finished second overall with results of second in both motos. Last week, Hunter swept the motos for the win, which means the Lawrence brothers are on a four-moto streak.Cooper crashed when Mikkel Haarup hit the dirt in his path, leaving Cooper with no place to go. Cooper required assistance off the track. He was awake and alert, and talking to his crew.Haiden Deegan got a poor start in the first moto and fell to the high side of the top 10 on Lap 1. His second chance did not improve his position as he fell all the way back to 10th on the first lap.Deegan moved into fifth with an aggressive pass on Justin Barcia and fourth around Webb on Lap 4. He claimed third from Chase Sexton on Lap 6 to earn his first 450 podium with a 3-3.Cooper Webb crashed on the first lap of the initial restart, but he was prepared for the restart and earned the holeshot. Jett slotted into second, but took the lead before the lap reached its halfway point. Hunter was third, but took second on the back half of Lap 1.Garrett Marchbanks moved into fifth on Lap 7 of Moto 2 around Dylan Ferrandis.

USWNT 1, Brazil 2: Sophia Wilson’s fast start fizzles against the strong home side
The U.S women’s national team fell 2-1 to Brazil in São Paulo at the Neo Química Arena on Saturday evening in front of a booming home crowd in the first of two friendlies against the South American champions.Although attendance was concentrated in the lower bowl of the stadium, which serves as the home of storied Brazilian club SC Corinthians, fans filled it with support for the 2027 World Cup hosts, manifesting as a 12th teammate on the pitch. They welcomed each U.S. possession with loud heckles and celebrated every Brazilian advance, from interceptions to tackles and shots on goal.Forward Sophia Wilson gave the U.S. an early advantage with a goal in the second minute, her first with the national team since 2024 and since becoming a mother. Fellow forward Trinity Rodman helped create the opportunity with her high press.Sophia Wilson scores her first USWNT goal since 2024 and in less than TWO MINUTES 😤 pic.twitter.com/G7IB2l1nFA— B/R Football (@brfootball) June 6, 2026Brazil answered nine minutes later when 21-year-old Palmeiras forward Taina Maranhão found the end of a cross from fullback Isabela Chagas. The delivery came from a Brazilian throw-in near the endline, a threat the U.S. had previously identified with USWNT head coach Emma Hayes saying there were 117 percent more throw-ins in Brazilian matches. In the 14th minute, the South American champions doubled their lead, the result of a combination from current and former National Women’s Soccer League players. Bia Zaneratto, who played for the Kansas City Current, carried the ball from midfield and absorbed pressure from the U.S.’s defensive efforts. She released the ball to 20-year-old Dudinha, who leads the San Diego Wave in assists. After wriggling through the U.S. backline, Dudinha returned the ball to Zaneratto, who was wide open for a cool finish. The result is the same scoreline as Brazil’s last win against the U.S. in April 2025, which Hayes had described as putting players in the frying pan. It is also the first time the U.S. has lost to the same opponent twice in a row since 2011 (the other was against Sweden). This match, and the following game on Tuesday, are meant as a World Cup tune-up — even if the U.S. still needs to actually qualify for the 2027 tournament, which will come in November. The Athletic discusses the key takeaways from a challenging match against a World Cup contender boosted by home-field advantage.USWNT’s hot start fizzles fastBrazil did not give the U.S. much time to celebrate Wilson’s early goal – no matter how momentous of a milestone this was for one of the U.S. national team’s biggest stars. Wilson continued to dominate the match, despite the 2-1 final scoreline. She was all over the pitch and, for a moment, nearly scored a brace. The South American side, however, quickly shifted the momentum in their favor, with Maranhão’s equalizer just nine minutes later. Brazil’s quick pace only continued when Zaneratto – another Palmeiras’ star – scored the team’s second goal three minutes after that.Brazil managed to dominate the first half. Early in the second half, Hayes brought in subs like Michelle Cooper and Avery Patterson to help level out the remainder of the match as the U.S. chased a second goal. The first 80 minutes were certainly an impressive showing by Brazilian goalkeeper Leticia, who was replaced late in the match, after being stretched off, by captain and veteran player Lorena. This fixture was as much a testing ground for the U.S. as it was for Brazil, who aced the exam by full time. —Melanie Anzidei Why playing Brazil mattersWhile the final scoreline was not what the U.S. had fought for on Saturday, this national team has shown why sometimes a loss is exactly what they needed. After all, it’s better to lose now against Brazil rather than next year when they are hosting the 2027 World Cup.Hayes knew that playing Brazil at this stage of their preparations for World Cup qualifiers was hugely important – not only because the Brazilians are one of the fiercest opponents in the world, but because playing them in their own backyard comes with a set of challenges beyond the actual field of play. The atmosphere inside Neo Química Arena in São Paulo was electric, and it was evident even through the broadcast. The stadium was buzzing for Brazil, which is an uncomfortable place for opponents to play in. Every positive play from Brazil came with a soundtrack of cheers while ever U.S. play came with a cacophony of boos.In those environments, it may be hard for players to hear one another. Emotions may be running higher than usual. There’s also the obvious benefits of learning the cities, hotels, stadiums, playing surfaces and climate, as well as the invaluable test run of traveling into the country as a unit. The game also provide a theater for the U.S. to study Brazil’s physicality, mind games and the time wasting tactics in real time. The most important challenge – which is becoming a Hayes specialty for U.S. training camps – is being able to play Brazil back-to-back. As important as the first match was, the second match on Tuesday – and how the team responds to a loss – will matter even more. —Anzidei Brazil’s depth of attacking talentHayes believes Dudinha has the potential to become one of the most dangerous attackers in the world.“She can terrorize defenses. I think not just with her pace, but it’s her pace in possession of the ball. She can go inside, she can go outside. She’s unpredictable,” Hayes said in a pre-match press conference on Friday. “You can’t dive in against her, but you also can’t overtly show her one way cause I think she can do you either side.”Defensive patience would be key to managing that threat, Hayes said, and it was clear in the first half why the U.S. manager spoke so high of the young San Diego Wave forward. Her 14th minute assist to Zaneratto was only one indication of her heavy involvement in Brazil’s attack; Dudinha’s ability to interchange with her and Taina Maranhão made for a challenging task for the U.S. backline.A fixture to the top-ranked Wave, Dudinha has increasingly been earning minutes with Brazil. She scored a goal and recorded an assist in last summer’s Copa América Femenina and has a total of 18 caps and six goals with the senior squad.Dudinha, Hayes said, “is a player destined for a massive future. I think she’s got all the qualities to be one of the very best. So, what a great opportunity we have to defend her, and in her home country, because these are the tests that we so want for our team.” —Tamerra GriffinThis article originally appeared in The Athletic.US Women's national team, NWSL, Women's Soccer, FIFA Women's World Cup2026 The Athletic Media Company

Fastballs and a broken bat: Grant's no-hitter leads Center Grove to regional title
GREENWOOD — Center Grove pitcher Gannon Grant felt good during pregame warmups ahead of Saturday's Class 4A regional championship game against Richmond, then he did something that made him feel like his fastball had a little more life than usual. In the bottom of the first inning, Grant threw a fastball inside to Red Devils shortstop Weston Jones. The pitch jammed Jones, shattering his composite bat into two pieces. The ball rolled foul down the first base line and the barrel of the bat tumbled toward Grant."That's probably my first time," Grant said of breaking an alloy bat. "In summer ball I've broken some wooden bats, but I've never seen an (Louisville Slugger) Atlas break. It was kind of cool, like 'Shoot, am I throwing harder today?'"Grant's fastball sat between 92 and 94 miles per hour, touching 95 at its peak and the Red Devils hitters could not catch up to the heat. Grant rounded out his three-pitch mix with a tight slider and changeup, racking up 13 strikeouts over six no-hit innings, leading the Trojans to a 12-0 victory. Grant was an error and a hit batter away from a perfect game. Here’s something you don’t see every day. Gannon Grant breaks a metal bat with a fastball. pic.twitter.com/Hiy3Z11Fhj— Akeem Glaspie (@THEAkeemGlaspie) June 6, 2026Center Grove advances to face Evansville North in the semistate semifinals."A no-hitter in the tournament doesn't happen very often," Center Grove coach Keith Hatfield said. "It's really easy for somebody to stick their bat out and hit a blooper or something, but (Grant) battled. He battled through heat, he battled through long innings. That was probably the biggest thing, those first three innings took forever. In this heat to stay composed and stay hydrated in the dugout, staying energetic, it's real easy to relax after (leading) 6-0 in two innings. I thought his mental focus was really, really good today."Game time temperatures were in the high 80s with the sun beaming off the turf field bumping temperatures into the 90s. The Trojans bats started equally as hot, scoring two runs in the first inning and three runs in the second. Drake McClurg led off the game with a double. McClurg and Liam Delp scored on errors. Delp added a two-run double in the second. Grant helped his cause with a solo home run to center field in the fourth. McClurg, Delp, Grady Grant and Jackson Burnett had two hits each. After the first-inning error, Grant retired the next 14 batters in a row."He's just a guy who's going to bring all his stuff," Richmond coach Michael Medley said. "He's going to fill out the zone consistently. He mixes his pitches well. He's got good pitch speed. He's a real good pitcher. He's tough to hit."The win against Richmond moves Grant's record to 8-0. The Tennessee commit and Indiana Gatorade Player of the Year lowered his ERA to 0.82 and the 13 strikeouts were a season high. The Trojans put together a dominant performance against Richmond, but they struggled to play a complete game in the sectional final. McClurg's late-game home run lifted them to victory over Perry Meridian, and the close call served as a bit of a wake-up call for a Center Grove squad with plans to make it to Victory Field."It's baseball, stuff happens," Gannon Grant said. "Perry, they're a good team. They put us on our heels a little bit, but we moved on. The bats were hot today, it's hot today, so it was great."This article originally appeared on Indianapolis Star: IHSAA Baseball: Grant leads Center Grove to regional win vs. Richmond

Crazy mock trade idea sends Anthony Davis to Golden State
Following Golden State's loss to the Phoenix Suns in the NBA Play-In Tournament, rumors have surfaced about the Warriors' offseason plans. After re-signing head coach Steve Kerr, Golden State is expected to build around former two-time MVP Stephen Curry the best they can. That plan may include LeBron James, as Brett Siegel of Clutch Points reported that Curry plans to meet with James this summer to recruit him to join the Warriors. But another way Golden State could entice James would be by acquiring one of his favorite former teammates, Anthony Davis.A recent mock trade from Bleacher Report's Zach Buckley proposed just that, as Buckley floated the idea of trading Jimmy Butler III, the No. 11 overall pick and a 2030 first-round pick swap to the Washington Wizards in exchange for Davis. Although this move could be risky for the Warriors considering Davis' injury history, the same could've been said for acquiring Kristaps Porzingis last February, whose upside is lower than that of Davis'.However, whether or not Washington is interested in giving up Davis for a package headlined by a late lottery pick after trading two first-round picks and more to acquire him last February remains to be seen. Although if Golden State were to bring in the 10-time All-Star and three-time blocks leader, it could certainly have an effect on their ability to sign James. This article originally appeared on Warriors Wire: Crazy mock trade sends Anthony Davis to the Warriors for Jimmy Butler

It also has a nine-game win streak.Germany played without Lennart Karl on Saturday, a day after the 18-year-old midfielder injured his thigh in training. But Leroy Sané and Kai Havertz scored as the 10th-ranked Germans beat the U.S. 2-1 at Soldier Field.Next up for Germany is its World Cup opener on June 14 against Curaçao. It also has Group E games against the Ivory Coast on June 20 and Ecuador on June 25.Karl has been ruled out for the tournament. He was coming off a breakout season with Bayern Munich, when he became the club’s youngest Champions League goal-scorer.“Really tough. ... I had a good connection to Lenny. He’s a great guy, a very young guy,” Germany defender David Raum said after the win over the U.S. “But yeah, we shared a lot of nice moments together also in this short time. I played in training always against him because he plays on the right wing. Yeah, we lose a good human being and an amazing player.”Karl wrote on Instagram that it's “indescribably painful” having to miss the World Cup. "Unfortunately injuries often come at the unluckiest time,” he posted.Karl was replaced on the roster by midfielder Assan Ouédraogo, who plays with Raum on Leipzig in the Bundesliga. Ouédraogo has made one appearance for Germany, scoring during a 6-0 win over Slovakia in November.“Very happy, yeah, to welcome him here, and he can help us also a lot,” Raum said. With Manuel Neuer recovering from a calf muscle issue, goalkeeper Oliver Baumann started against the U.S. The 40-year-old Neuer will go into the World Cup having not played for Germany in almost two years. He retired from the national team after the 2024 European Championship but agreed to a recall last month.___AP World Cup coverage: https://apnews.com/hub/fifa-world-cup

Crystal Lake denies Morton in bid for first IHSA girls soccer state title
Morton's magical season ended one victory short of a state championship. The Crystal Lake Central Tigers took home their second Class 2A state title in three years, defeating the Potters 3-1 in the IHSA girls soccer championship game Saturday, June 6 at North Central College.Although the Potters came up a win short of their ultimate goal, their fans who made the trip to the west Chicago suburbs gave the team a standing ovation as the match ended.More: IHSA girls soccer: State champions to be crowned on biggest day for the sportMorton had very little answer for Loyola Chicago-bound star Addison Shaffer, who delivered a pair of goals to push Crystal Lake to victory. In the 30th minute, she poked her way past Potter goalkeeper Adly Hilt and maneuvered around several Morton defenders to fire a shot into the lower right corner of the net.Her second goal came on a penalty kick in the 66th minute after she was knocked down in the box by Morton defender Marley Rosales, who was trying to prevent a second goal. Instead, Shaffer delivered on a penalty kick, booting one past Hilt's left into the net. That penalty kick came mere moments after Morton's Izzy Ripka tied the game directly off of a corner kick in the 65th minute, the biggest highlight in a trying afternoon for the Potters.Crystal Lake added an insurance goal in the 90th minute, thanks to a wild long-range effort from Ella Bechler that sailed past Hilt in the final moments.Morton ended its most successful season in history with a 26-2-1 mark, with their lone loss before Saturday coming at the hands of Peoria Notre Dame on March 30. The Potters clinched their first-ever appearance in a state tournament with a 5-2 victory over Waterloo on Tuesday in Chatham.A 4-1 win over Wheaton St. Francis on Friday sent the Potters to the state title game, giving them a win in a state tournament in their first try. This article originally appeared on Journal Star: IHSA soccer: Crystal Lake Central and star player overwhelms Morton

Lighting prank goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy, creatively revealing he won the 2026 Vezina Trophy
Tampa Bay Lightning goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy has won the 2025-2026 Vezina Trophy for being the league’s best goaltender. It was Vasilevskiy’s second time winning the award in his 12-year career. Since it was his second Vezina Trophy, the Lightning decided to have a little fun at their goalie’s expense.Rather than just give him the trophy, the franchise opted to orchestrate a prank utilizing two members of local law enforcement. Vasilevskiy notoriously doesn’t take any days off, and so Tampa Bay knew he would be working out at the facility. The goalie was alerted to a police presence requesting to talk to him about his car parked in the lot. Play 2026 Soccer Pick 'Em with FOX One and make your picks for the world's biggest soccer tournamentThe officer explained a scenario in which a criminal had fled into the parking lot and in which a drug dog on site had given an alert signal at Vasilevskiy’s car. When the officers inspected his car, there was a giant bag in his front seat that the goalie had no clue about. They removed it from the vehicle and then revealed the trophy. Vasilevskiy said about the prank, “I was just happy that my car was in one piece. I didn’t want to go through, like, the insurance process when I heard that this suspicious object in my car. It’s probably not gonna end well.”After laughing off the prank, the goalie did talk about what it meant to win the trophy for the second time. “As a professional goalie who plays in the NHL, it’s one of your ultimate goals for sure to win the [Vezina] Award. But, it’s all about the team, and you will never win this award without a good team in front of you. That means a lot to me.”This is the second year that Vasilevskiy has won the Vezina Trophy. He originally took home the award in 2019. That year, the goalie played in 53 games and had a 39-10-4 record. Vasilevskiy played in 58 games this season with Tampa Bay. He had a 39-15-4 record and saved 91.1% of shots against him. The goalie finished with a 2.31 average goals against per game, the second-fewest mark in the league among goalies who started at least 20 games. The Lightning made the playoffs as a Wild Card team after finishing the year 50-26-6. Tampa Bay beat the Pittsburgh Penguins in six games in the first round, but was then swept by the Carolina Hurricanes in the second round. The 31-year-old Vasilevskiy signed an 8-year, $76 million extension ahead of the 2020-2021 season. He has two years left under this deal and is set to hit free agency in 2028.

UFC Vegas 118 Highlights! ‘Thug Nasty’ Stuns Luna With Buzzer-Beating Submission
ABU DHABI, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES - JULY 26: Bryce Mitchell reacts after a victory against Said Nurmagomedov of Russia in a bantamweight fight during the UFC Fight Night event at Etihad Arena on July 26, 2025 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. (Photo by Chris Unger/Zuffa LLC) Bryce Mitchell kept things rolling at 135 pounds earlier tonight (Sat., June 6, 2026) at UFC Vegas 118 live on Paramount+ from inside UFC’s Meta Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada, stopping highly-touted bantamweight prospect Santiago Luna with a late third-round submission (arm-triangle choke).Looks like that tough weight cut paid off for “Thug Nasty.”Mitchell is lucky this fight even took place. The veteran contender was originally scheduled to meet Victory Henry this weekend in “Sin City” before the latter withdrew and Luna was asked to step in. It was a gusty decision to say the least considering Luna came into Saturday as an undefeated 21-year-old top prospect, but the Mexican brawler put it all on the line.Unfortunately for Luna, Mitchell was on top of his game. The former featherweight has looked even better with his wrestling since dropping down to bantamweight and that was evident yet again on Saturday night. Luna had his moments along the way, but “Thug Nasty” was the one in control and forcing Luna to defend. Mitchell was able to launch a last-ditch effort at the end of the third and actually scored a submission with just eight seconds left on the clock. It was pretty impressive and should punch his ticket to the division’s top 15 rankings.Check out the video highlights below:IN THE FINAL SECONDS!!Bryce Mitchell earns the submission victory for a huge victory at bantamweight![ #UFCVegas118 | 📺 @paramountplus ] pic.twitter.com/CnnrEjkLxH— UFC on Paramount+ (@UFConParamount) June 7, 2026For complete UFC Vegas 118 results, coverage, and highlights click HERE.

In the Knicks, New Yorkers see their own resilience reflected
A subway station near Madison Square Garden has been painted in Knicks blue and orange (TIMOTHY A.CLARY)As New York prepares to host the World Cup, the city is instead awash in Knicks blue and orange, reflecting a deep love for the gritty, unifying team chasing a historic NBA Finals victory. The Knicks took a commanding 2-0 lead on Friday in the best of seven series against the San Antonio Spurs, and now the action shifts to the Big Apple for games three and four."The Knicks, this is New York at its very best right now," said John Patrick Walsh, 65, who comes from a family of fans."Everybody's a Knicks fan together. It's a huge family, it's all love," Walsh, a voice actor, told AFP near Madison Square Garden, the home of the Knicks. The streets around the Manhattan venue have become a rallying point for thousands of fans to cheer on their team, as celebrity superfans including Spike Lee, Timothee Chalamet and Ben Stiller applaud courtside."It's very energetic, very chaotic," said Melanie Mendoza, a waitress at the Bourbon and Branch, a bar not far from the iconic Garden that is fully decked out in the team's colors."Even if you don't know anything about basketball, you kind of get into that atmosphere, that vibe. People go crazy, basically."Outdoor watch parties around Madison Square Garden were initially banned during the NBA playoffs after multiple arrests during raucous celebrations, but will take place for the rest of the finals. - 'The city's game' -After more than 50 years without a title and decades of false starts, the Knicks' rebirth is fueling a rare level of citywide enthusiasm.Sports sociologist Jay Coakley, of the University of Colorado, noted that basketball "is a fast game, so it represents kind of the pace of city life, especially New York City life."For him, that explains why so many support the Knicks despite other New York sports teams like the Yankees (baseball) or the Giants (American football) having far more success.Coakley also noted that the Knicks offer a sense of belonging for New York's vast immigrant population, as they join other residents to back the team. Amy Bass, a sports studies professor at Manhattanville University, said that New York's urban landscape just fits with basketball."All anyone needs to play basketball is a ball and a hoop, a surface that you can dribble on, and New York City has an awful lot of that kind of space," she said. "It is the city's game, from Harlem to the Village."- Common language -The Knicks have drawn on their turbulent history to project an image of resilience -- similar to how New Yorkers like to see themselves. In the 1970s, when they won their only two NBA titles, the Knicks were known as a "blue-collar, hard-working, tough-minded team," according to Adam Criblez, author of a book on the squad."Not that the other organizations didn't, but the Knicks just captured the imagination," said Criblez. The team's roller-coaster run this season, with many dramatic wins secured in the final seconds, has reinforced that image.Bass noted that the Knicks have become a unifying force in a city plagued by huge social and economic inequalities. "The city can be lonely, the city can be hard," she said. "In a moment where social media and AI and politics create islands, this is something that feels organic, a sharing of language, of goals."rh/pel/bjt/sst

How Myles Garrett trade could backfire for Los Angeles Rams
How Myles Garrett trade could backfire for Los Angeles Rams originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Los Angeles Rams gave up a lot to bring Myles Garrett to town. Clearly, the organization thinks that adding Garrett to the defensive line will be worth the high sticker price. But, what if it doesn't work out that way? Will the Rams regret trading for Myles Garrett? Bleacher Report's Brad Gagnon covered that possibility in a recent article examining how the biggest moves of the offseason could potentially backfire. He pointed to Garrett's advancing age combined with the potential of Jared Verse, who the Rams traded to Cleveland, as reasons why the trade might not work out the way Rams fans hope. "Garrett is on the wrong side of 30 now, and it's entirely possible the Browns sold at the highest point with a potential peak in 2025. Verse was the Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2024 and made the Pro Bowl as a sophomore. The gap between the two could close considerably in 2026, and Verse likely won't cost Cleveland much until 2028," Gagnon wrote. "Garrett also won't come cheap over time, even with the Browns absorbing a lot of the costs early on. Throw in all that lost draft capital and this basically backfires if the Rams don't win the Super Bowl in the next two or three years." This story will be updated. Corning's first loss comes in NYS Class AAA softball quarterfinals
For the second year in a row, the Corning softball team's season came to a close at the hands of Section 6 champion Lancaster. After being held without a base runner through the first five innings by Corning ace Matti Johnston, the Legends scored three times in the bottom of the sixth before securing a 3-1 victory in a New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class AAA regional final/state quarterfinal at Gates-Chili High School.Alyssa Brunner homered to right-center field to lead off the sixth for defending state champion Lancaster, ending Johnston's perfect game and knotting the score.Isabella DiMino singled and scored on an error to give Lancaster a 2-1 lead. Abigail DiMino added an RBI single with two outs for a two-run cushion.Corning's Katie Grover collected a one-out single in the seventh inning, but the Hawks couldn't come up with the offense that had propelled them to an 18-0 record and No. 1 Class AAA ranking coming into the contest. That came down largely to the pitching of Maddy Matthews, who finished with a five-hitter. She struck out eight and walked one.Corning's lone run came in the first inning after Johnston led off with a single. Nelly Korda birdies final three holes, holds clubhouse lead at U.S. Women's Open
What’s on the line Sunday is monumental.Back-to-back major titles. A fourth, overall. A shot at the season Grand Slam. The precipice of the LPGA Hall of Fame. It’s also inconsequential. All Nelly Korda wants to do is win the U.S. Women’s Open. And she’ll have her best-ever chance. Korda shot her second-consecutive, 4-under 67 Saturday at Riviera Country Club, closing with three-straight birdies. She was tied for the lead entering the clubhouse, knotted at 6 under with In Gee Chun (through 14), herself a three-time major champ.Korda finished runner-up at this championship a year ago at Erin Hills. She began the final round three behind eventual winner Maja Stark, and made a valiant run before a late stumble left her two back. That was part of a winless campaign for Korda, who also lost her status as world No. 1. This year, however, has been different. She won her season debut, finished runner-up in her next three events, won The Chevron Championship, and won the next week in Mexico. (A tie for eighth in her most recent start, three weeks ago in Cincinnati, is her worst finish of the year.)And, of course, she reclaimed world No. 1.Korda, who has twice won The Chevron in addition to the KPMG Women’s PGA (two of the tour's five majors), hasn’t been shy about her desire to claim her national championship. But she has as many missed cuts as she does top-10s (three each) in 11 career starts. While her favorite number is 13, 12 could soon hold a special meaning. After opening in 2-over 73, Korda made a grip change, strengthening it on the advice of sister Jessica, and shot 67. She began Saturday’s third round three off the lead and promptly birdied two of her first six holes — including a chip-in on the third and an 18-footer on the sixth.A bogey at the par-4 eighth was her only dropped shot of the day as she made an 8-footer for par on the 13th and a 5-footer for the same on No. 15. Maintaining momentum, Korda finished birdie-birdie-birdie.She hit her tee shot to 5 feet on the par-3 16th, hit an exquisite chip shot to tap-in range on the par-5 17th, and finished with a iron from 154 yards to 4 feet at the last.Korda has 15 regular LPGA wins to go with her three major titles. Along with an Olympic gold medal and a Rolex Player of the Year award, she currently has 23 LPGA Hall of Fame points. Twenty-seven are needed for entry, with a major victory worth two points.

Can the USMNT take the next step? Final World Cup tuneup offers mixed clues
CHICAGO — A couple hours after Saturday’s 2-1 loss to Germany at Soldier Field, the U.S. national team players boarded a bus headed to the airport for a charter jetting west. The training camps and friendlies and regional tournaments that had peppered the calendar since Mauricio Pochettino took charge 19 months ago were behind them now.Destination: Southern California and a moment eight years in the making — a World Cup in the homeland. In spite of the setback, they headed out with a strong sense of themselves, a firm idea of both how Pochettino wants to play on soccer’s grandest stage and who will probably start the Group D opener Friday (9 p.m. ET, Fox) against Paraguay at SoFi Stadium. They spoke of unbreakable bonds and a positive culture. Pochettino repeated one of his favorite maxims: “Culture eats strategy for breakfast.”Play 2026 Soccer Pick 'Em with FOX One and make your picks for the world's biggest soccer tournamentThey spoke of how they’ve grown together, held each other accountable and built a family environment. That’s all well and good, but make no mistake: They did not ace their final exam and they remain an unpolished team that has yet to show they’re capable of making a deep run in the tournament.Saturday’s performance was a B at best — terrific in their response to an early deficit and creation of opportunities, satisfactory in their general performance and disappointing in their defensive shortcomings. And yes, they lost. While the U.S. has grown under Pochettino, it has still yet to prove it can beat a global power. (The wins against Uruguay last fall and Senegal last weekend were very nice, but the Germanys, Brazils and Frances are the real tests.)It’s unfair to compare a friendly littered with second-half substitutions to a World Cup match. But the aim remains the same: winning. And with a third opportunity this year to defeat a European heavyweight, they fell short again.Tired of moral victories, U.S. fans want so desperately to see this team take the next step. Maybe that comes at the World Cup. Maybe not.“For sure, disappointed we lost,” left back Antonee Robinson said.Christian Pulisic's corner kick sparked Antonee Robinson's rocket Saturday, but little else eased USMNT doubts.Jamie Squire via Getty ImagesThe Americans were much better Saturday than they were in decisive losses to Belgium and Portugal in March in Atlanta. But at the World Cup, these same legacy programs are sure to stand in the way of reaching the first U.S. quarterfinal since 2002.Conceding a goal in the second minute on a set piece, as the Americans did Saturday, was a terrible way to go about things.“In that moment, I was sad, I was upset,” Pochettino said. “The reaction was amazing, really positive. … We can deal with this type of situation that we can find in the future during the World Cup.”Robinson was happy to see the team respond so well because, “conceding that early, we could have easily crumbled, and it could have been a very, very bad day to be going into the tournament.”Robinson evened the match with a moment of individual brilliance — a 23-yard, left-footed volley that whizzed over goalkeeper Oliver Baumann and streaked just under the crossbar. It was world class, through and through.“Unreal,” midfielder Tyler Adams said. “I told him that after he scored, ‘Can you save that for next weekend?’”Forward Christian Pulisic added, “Sick goal. He has that in him. He caught that one really well, and that's a special goal for him.”Robinson said he has never scored one quite like that during his pro career spanning 11 years. It was a rewarding moment too, after a series of injuries in recent years jeopardized his future.“I couldn't really see the light at the end of the tunnel, and everything I was doing to try and get well wasn't working,” he said. “But now I'm feeling in pretty good shape, and happy we've got through the game, and I get to go and help my country at another World Cup.”After Robinson’s stunning strike, the U.S. remained on its front foot and threatened to take the lead before halftime. The finished product, though, wasn’t good enough. Germany reclaimed the lead early in the second half, and for all the ambition and hustle put forth by 10 substitutes, the Americans didn’t have enough down the stretch.Nonetheless, their attitude heading into the World Cup remains upbeat.“The response, the character, the resilience — all those kinds of things you want to see — we can raise our quality now,” Adams said. The match also seemed to reveal Pochettino’s favored lineup.Matt Freese played the entire match in goal after Matt Turner and Chris Brady split time against Senegal last weekend. Robinson and Sergiño Dest were running the flanks again. Tim Ream and Alex Freeman started on the backline again. (Miles Robinson stood in for Chris Richards, who remained out with an ankle injury.)Adams’ partner was Malik Tillman, who lined up deeper than usual in midfield. Pochettino had spoken at training camp about an attacking player joining Adams and helping advance the ball quicker — an extra conduit of sorts between the defense and attack. Sebastian Berhalter filled that role in the 3-2 win over Senegal last Sunday in Charlotte.“Kind of a different position for me under this coach,” the soft-spoken Tillman said. “It's different positioning defensively but still gives me a lot of freedom. … I know what to do. I know how to move, how to get on the ball. I'm quite flexible when it comes to position, so I can find my spaces basically almost everywhere.”Pulisic, Weston McKennie and striker Folarin Balogun seem certain of starting in the attack.Pochettino, of course, will not reveal his starters for the Paraguay opener until about an hour before kickoff. But Saturday’s lineup will probably remain largely intact at SoFi Stadium. The big question is whether Richards will return. He hasn’t played in three weeks and, even if available, he’s probably not at peak form.In another scare, Antonee Robinson limped off Saturday. He said it was muscle cramps. “It feels fine now,” he said. “It settled down.”Center back Mark McKenzie, a second-half sub, was seen leaving the locker room after the match with an apparent foot ailment. No details were available right away. All and all, Pochettino and Co. were pleased with their work not just since camp opened May 27, but the past 19 months. Now, when it matters most, they need to show what they’ve learned.“We have very good balance [with] all of the things we were talking [about] during one year and a half,” Pochettino said. “We were a little bit tough, we wanted to challenge them, we wanted to challenge everyone, but now it's about [being] all together to put the interest of our federation, our soccer, our people, the fans and the country to give our best.”

Hurricanes rout Brumbies as Australian teams suffer familiar sinking feeling in Super Rugby playoffs
WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — Another Australian washout in the first round of Super Rugby playoffs has thrown up two all-New Zealand semifinals next weekend.Washout literally. The ACT Brumbies were flushed out of the playoffs when they lost 66-12 to the Hurricanes in a downpour in Wellington, prompting Brumbies head coach Stephen Larkham to apologize to fans for his team’s performance. The Queensland Reds lost 46-24 to the Chiefs in a tighter match but in similar torrential rain conditions in Hamilton. No Australian team has ever won a playoff match in New Zealand. The Crusaders beat the Auckland-based Blues 52-31 in a Kiwi derby to stretch their unbeaten record in home playoffs in Christchurch to 33 matches. As a result, the Chiefs will play the Crusaders in Hamilton on Friday and the Hurricanes will play the Blues in Wellington on Saturday, as the Blues received a second chance as the highest-ranked quarterfinal loser.Hurricane warning It began Friday on a rainy, wind-swept night in Wellington where the Hurricanes, in marginal conditions, ran in nine tries against a team which has beaten them in their last three playoffs meetings. The warning was signaled early. The Brumbies caught Hurricanes fullback Callum Harkin in defense and forced him back over his own goal line, anticipating a scoring opportunity from a five meter scrum.Instead, the Hurricanes promoted the ball back into the field of play and, seconds later, scored the first try of the match. Another followed quickly and by halftime the Hurricanes led 38-7, the most points the Brumbies have conceded in the first half of any match. The Brumbies’ defense was wafer-thin and, with scrumhalf Cam Roigard darting around the fringe and flyhalf Ruben Love, running the ball at the line and distributing, the Hurricanes were able to puncture it again and again, for its biggest-ever win over the Brumbies.“It’s embarrassing. It was frustrating and disappointing and all the adjectives you would like to use,” Larkham said. “It seemed like the harder we tried the worse things got out there.“For our fans back in Australia, we appreciate your support — particularly the ones who follow us no matter what. We had an up and down season and you rode it with us. We managed to get through to the finals and there was probably some hope there, but we’ve let you down and we’re sorry for that.”Crusade continues The defending champion Crusaders also have had an up and down season, losing six of 15 matches. But they come into their own in the playoffs, especially at home and more so at their new home stadium which has been full to capacity for every match since it opened to host this season’s Super Round. The Crusaders’ front five was superb as were veterans David Havili in midfield and Johnny McNicholl at fullback who scored three tries and defended and kicked well. The Blues qualified for the playoffs with an 8-7 record but have flattered to deceive all season. They have been limited and predictable and they paid again on Saturday for indiscipline. Blues backrower Malachi Wrampling was shown a yellow card in the first half for a high tackle on Leicester Fainga’anuku and the yellow later was upgraded to a red.The Blues managed to level the score at 14-14 while still a man down but the Crusaders rushed to a 33-14 lead by halftime. They scored eight tries in all.If the Blues were downcast, they were smiling when the Chiefs beat the Reds to send them through to the playoffs as lucky loser.“It’s a weird one, eh?” Blues captain Patrick Tuipulotu said. “In terms of the comp., I don’t know any other comp. that has a second life for a losing team. It’s weird but if it’s another chance we’ll certainly take it.”Chief ConcernThe match between the Chiefs and Reds was the closest of the quarterfinals, swung the Chiefs way by flyhalf Damian McKenzie who scored two tries among 26 points. The Chiefs have a major concern for the semifinals after losing All Blacks backrower Wallace Sititi to a head knock. The match was suspended for some time around the 18th minute after Sititi was injured first in a collision with Reds backrower Lukhan Salakaia-Loto, exacerbated accidentally by one of his own players. The Chiefs posted on social media Sunday that Sititi “wanted to let you all know he is at home and feeling good, as well as sending his thanks to everyone for their love and support.“Scans at Waikato Hospital did not reveal any issues and he will be assessed and cared for through the concussion protocols.”Saturday’s match was the last with the Reds for head coach Les Kiss who now will understudy Joe Schmidt in three tests in July before becoming Wallabies head coach.“Mixed emotions in a lot of ways,” Kiss said. “I’m bloody proud of the boys in a number of ways.“At halftime, I think we were still confident about what we were doing on the park and we were standing up to the things we said we’d do. I’m gutted for the boys more than anything.”____AP rugby: https://apnews.com/hub/rugby

Mystics head coach Sydney Johnson erupts at refs, is ejected and has to be escorted off the court by police
Washington Mystics head coach Sydney Johnson had to watch the end of Saturday night’s game against the Atlanta Dream from the locker room. With about four minutes left in the third quarter, Dream forward Angel Reese drove the lane and went up for a layup on a fast break. She was contacted by Mystics guard Alicia Florez Getino, who was assessed a foul.During the break for the whistle, Johnson started arguing with the official. He had to be held back by his assistant coaches, but he kept going toward the officials, making sure he got his money’s worth in the argument. Johnson was then given two technical fouls for his actions and was promptly ejected from the game. This only added fuel to the fire, and the head coach continued scolding the referees. It got to the point where even some of his own players were trying to calm him down. This escalated until three officers working security for the game helped to usher him toward the locker room. They initially physically led him to the locker room, but let him go, and he continued on to the locker room, ending his night. Washington got blown out. The Dream won 109-77. Reese finished the game with a double-double of 18 points and 17 rebounds. The Mystics’ loss dropped the team to 4-5 on the season. Atlanta, meanwhile, moved to 7-3 with the win. Washington will now turn its attention to a home game against the Indiana Fever on Monday. The biggest question now is whether Johnson will coach that matchup or if the WNBA will impose a suspension for his actions.

NorthWood baseball wins second straight IHSAA 3A regional title
The last two people in the NorthWood baseball dugout Saturday, June 6, were head coach Zach Benko and the Panthers’ lone senior Ryder Ransberger. All of the Panthers players, coaches and fans had left the facility, and the two sat on the bench alone. They reflected on NorthWood’s past two seasons. It wasn’t a moment shared in sorrow; rather, one of celebration. Ransberger’s high school career will continue at least one more week as the Panthers became the first baseball team to win back-to-back IHSAA regional championships in the South Bend Tribune coverage area since Penn did so in 2022 and 2023 with an 8-1 win against Highland, claiming a 3A crown.“Boy, this is quite an accomplishment with this group,” Benko said in a phone interview Saturday night. “It’s fun; it’s great. I think we’re young enough that we don’t know any better. We just want to go play. And you know what? Since we’re playing, we might as well win.”More: All runs end, and the magic did for Goshen in a Class 4A regionalMore: One big inning helped swing a Class 3A regional championship gameAgainst the Trojans, the Panthers allowed just three hits, with sophomore starting pitcher Finley Miller turning in six and 1/3 innings of work, walking six batters, allowing no earned runs and striking out six batters. Miller also helped himself on offense with two hits, an RBI and a stolen base.NorthWood scored its runs in bunches, pouncing for two in the second inning, two more in the fifth, three in the sixth and one more in the seventh. Joining Miller with RBIs were Brady Blackford with two, and Brody Rondeau, Sade Yoder, Drew Rains and Brady Weaver each with one. This barrage helped the Panthers win their third regional championship of the last 10 years and fifth overall. When they did so last season, they were 20-12, just one win better than the current squad.NorthWood won its 3A semi-state semifinal against Norwell last season, only to lose in the title game to eventual state champion Andrean. Next up for the Panthers this time around is a rematch against Norwell (19-8), while Andrean (28-3) faces DeKalb (21-4) in the other North semifinal. Location and time of these games has yet to be announced by the IHSAA.The key difference between this season’s team and the last is being without 10 key seniors. Benko admitted that NorthWood had to take its lumps to win a second consecutive regional title, a price well worth the reward.“It’s been pretty remarkable what they’ve done,” he said. “They’ve been really resilient. They weren’t very satisfied with the narrative of a down year or rebuilding year.”Bremen's season ends with Bluffton's historic victoryBremen baseball’s 20-8 season came to an end Saturday, losing its IHSAA 2A regional championship game 9-0 against Bluffton (17-10). The Lions fell short of capturing just their third all-time regional title, while the Tigers won their first. The Lions had just two hits in the season-ending loss, two of which came from senior Max Barnes and the other from senior Spalding University commit Zack Rouch. Bremen did not have a runner reach base until the fifth inning, and the bottom of that frame was its ultimate undoing on defense.More: John Glenn sees historic softball season end in semi-state semifinalBluffton already led 3-0, but the Tigers piled on for five more in the fifth after loading the bases with no outs thanks to two hit batters and a single. Bluffton drove in its runs via sacrifice fly, two singles, a double and a wild pitch.Saturday marked the end of eight high school careers for the Lions, six of whom were in the starting lineup against Bluffton. Despite the disappointment in the end, Bremen had its most successful season since 2023 with 20 wins and a sectional crown.Kyle Smedley is a sports reporter at the South Bend Tribune. Mets' Jorge Polanco's rehab assignment shut down after experiencing ankle soreness
Jorge Polanco was not in the lineup for Triple-A Syracuse on Saturday after experiencing ankle soreness, the team announced, and his rehab assignment has been shut down by the Mets.Polanco will now head back to New York for further re-evaluation on his ankle after dealing with Achilles bursitis that has been nagging him all season.Earlier in the week, manager Carlos Mendoza told reporters that Polanco "could be in play" to return to the team when it began a three-game series in San Diego this weekend. However, on Friday, before the series opener, Polanco remained in Triple-A where the skipper said he needed more volume both in terms of his at-bats and defense. In six games between Double-A and Triple-A, Polanco went 2-for-12 with a home run and five walks. Despite the results, it looked like Polanco was at least trending in the right direction to re-join the Mets, but now his future is completely up in the air.

Section 4 softball teams go on to the Class A and B state final four
ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Susquehanna Valley (21-3) and Maine-Endwell (19-5) emerged as this year’s state semifinalists in the 2026 New York Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) softball tournament after securing 21-11 and 13-5 victories over Section 6’s Alden (16-2) and Depew (16-6), respectively, at Gates-Chili High School on June 6.Susquehanna Valley and stepping up to the plateThe highly offensive matchup between Susquehanna Valley and Alden resulted in the Sabers collecting 23 hits and the Bulldogs hitting 13. Leading Susquehanna Valley was Rianne Moelder with four runs, four hits and two RBIs, and Danica LaBarre, who hit three home runs and drove in five with four hits. What looked like a potential nine-inning game, due to Alden’s 2-0 sixth inning that put the Bulldogs within earshot of tying the game and the score at 13-11, turned into an 8-0 batting frenzy, sparked by Susquehanna Valley’s Kylee Richardson, who leads the team with a .566 batting average, and bolstered by LaBarre and Moelder, who each homered in the stand-out inning.Despite Susquehanna Valley entering its Final Four matchup against the 2025 Class B state champion Chatham (Section 2) with little precedent to draw from since its 2018 semifinal run, the Sabers undoubtedly house a team full of hitters who have averaged 30 plate appearances and 10 hits per game so far this season, and harness a kind of hitting power that have had teams like Alden huddled at the mound on more than one occasion.Maine-Endwell gets another go at a state final appearanceSenior Isabel Hunter led the Spartans with three runs, four RBIs and 2 hits, including a homer out to left field, which capped a shutout, 5-0 lead by the second inning. Senior Kaylee Hurba and junior Tessa L’Amoreaux, who, along with Hunter, remain the only players to share experience winning the state championship (2023), had two runs, two hits and one RBI each.Freshman Harper Eagan and sophomore Olivia Virgil managed to keep Maine-Endwell out of Depew’s reach, despite a rough third inning that had a Wildcat on all three bases on three separate occasions. Eagan earned three hits and three RBIs, while Virgil scored two runs, had three hits and one RBI.The Spartans reenter the state Final Four for the second straight season and will be looking to avenge last year’s 4-0 shutout loss to Miller Place.Up next: Maine-Endwell will face Section 2’s Averill Park (20-4) at 10 a.m. in the Class A regional final, and Susquehanna Valley will take on Section 2’s Chatham (22-2) in the Class B regional final at 4 p.m. at Greenlight Grandslam Park in Binghamton on June 12. Windham-Ashland-Jewett and Deposit-Hancock, the other two Section 4 softball teams continuing in the tournament, will play at 11:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m in the Class D and Class C regional finals. This article originally appeared on Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin: M-E and SV softball teams advance to the state final four
