Hours after replacing Suryakumar Yadav as India T20I captain, Shreyas Iyer leads side to victory over SKY
NEW DELHI: Shreyas Iyer's first day as India's new T20I captain could hardly have unfolded in a more dramatic fashion.Hours after the BCCI announced Iyer as Suryakumar Yadav's successor at the helm of the national T20 side, the two Mumbai stalwarts faced off in the T20 Mumbai League. By the end of the evening, it was the newly-appointed India skipper who had the final say, leading SoBo Mumbai Falcons to a five-wicket victory over Suryakumar's Triumph Knights MNE.While Suryakumar produced a trademark cameo of 48 off 24 balls, smashing three fours and four sixes, Shreyas responded with a commanding 61 off just 36 deliveries, decorated with five boundaries and four sixes, to steer his side to victory in style.Shreyas answers with the batBatting first, Triumph Knights MNE managed 147 for eight, with Suryakumar once again providing the spark. The former India T20 captain looked in sublime touch and appeared set for a bigger score before falling two short of a half-century.However, Shreyas ensured the spotlight remained firmly on him. Introduced as an Impact Substitute for SoBo Mumbai Falcons, the 31-year-old played a captain's knock, pacing the chase expertly as his side crossed the finish line with five wickets in hand. The contest took on added significance after chief selector Ajit Agarkar and the selection panel decided to hand Shreyas the captaincy for the upcoming T20I series against Ireland and England, bringing an end to Suryakumar's stint just months after he guided India to the T20 World Cup title.ALSO READ:SKYfall: Why India moved on from Suryakumar Yadav - The numbers behind the end of the SKY eraWarm hug, warm words from SuryakumarDespite the dramatic change in leadership, there was no sign of bitterness between the two long-time Mumbai teammates. Before the match, Suryakumar and Shreyas shared a warm embrace, reflecting a friendship built over years of representing Mumbai and India together.Speaking at the toss, Suryakumar publicly backed his successor and called the appointment a proud moment for Mumbai cricket."Very, very, very happy for Shreyas as he's getting to lead the T20 Indian team. We played a lot of cricket together in Bombay. Three back-to-back Mumbai captains are going to lead T20s for India. It's a very proud moment and everyone needs to celebrate that," he said.— T20Mumbai (@T20Mumbai) Earlier in the day, Suryakumar had also wished the Indian team success on social media and congratulated teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi on earning his maiden India call-up.The selectors admitted that removing Suryakumar from the captaincy was a difficult call, especially after his World Cup triumph earlier this year. But with an eye on the next T20 World Cup cycle, they opted for a fresh leadership direction and placed their faith in Shreyas' credentials and consistency.

Harry Kane gives verdict on searing US heat ahead of England’s World Cup campaign
Harry Kane has played down the impact the USA’s sweltering temperatures will have on England’s World Cup chances after they had their first proper run-out on American soil.Thomas Tuchel’s men are looking to add a second star to their shirts after Gareth Southgate led them to within a whisker of matching Alf Ramsey’s heroes of 1966.The Three Lions played their first of two warm-up matches on Saturday evening, beating the World Cup’s lowest-ranked side New Zealand 1-0 - and while Tuchel was unhappy with some of the “freestyle” football shown in the first half against New Zealand, emerging unscathed from the patchwork pitch was a boost.Kane admitted the surface was “a bit sticky” as they were made to sweat in 33 degrees Celsius heat, but the skipper feels talk about the conditions have been overblown.Harry Kane has played down the impact of the heat on US soil (Getty)“To be honest, I don’t think the heat’s been too bad,” the striker, who played at last year’s Club World Cup in America, added.“Obviously, we’ve been getting used to it in training. After the first couple of days, I felt like most of the lads were used to it.“Today actually didn’t feel terrible out there, so I think there’s a talking point that might get over spoke about, to be honest.“We’re all professional athletes. We all have done the right preparation to get ready for this tournament between us and the staff as well.“We have another 10 days or so until that first game, training in this environment, so I think come the tournament, it won’t be a factor.”Kane scored the winner against the All Whites, a sublime first-half header, to take his tally to 67 for the season for club and country. The Bayern Munich frontman feels in the form of his life as he heads into the tournament.“Look, playing for England is my favourite thing to do,” Kane said.“I wear the shirt with immense pride, I wear the armband with immense pride, trying to set the right example for my team-mates, the staff, but also the fans and the country.“To be able to lead another group of guys into another World Cup is obviously a special feeling.“We go into it with high expectations, so for me I’m just excited for this thing to get going. I feel as good as I’ve ever felt and it can’t come soon enough.”England open their World Cup campaign against 2018 semi-final foes Croatia in Dallas on June 17 and began preparations for the tournament after arriving in Florida on Monday.Tuchel named a different team in each half of Saturday’s friendly against New Zealand as part of groundwork that continues with Wednesday’s final warm-up friendly against Costa Rica in Orlando.Kane said after scoring his 79th England goal: “I think it’s important always as a striker. You know what I’m like. I want to be on the scoresheet as much as possible.“Obviously I knew I was only playing 45 minutes today, so to get kind of it in stoppage-time of the first half was a nicer feeling than if it went 0-0.“But, look, we’re here for preparation, we’re here for getting fitness, dealing with the heat, dealing with these type of pitches, so ultimately it’s another day done and we look forward to another friendly game in a few days.”

Watch: Barcelona midfielder makes a rash challenge on Real Madrid target during Spain training
Watch: Barcelona midfielder makes a rash challenge on Real Madrid target during Spain trainingWith less than a week remaining before the start of the FIFA World Cup, Spain, as one of the favourites, are already locked in.The La Roja are slated to face Peru in their final friendly before the World Cup. But heading into the game, Barcelona midfielder Gavi has raised a few eyebrows.A video has gone viral where Gavi was seen making a rash challenge on Rodri during a training session, one that could have ended badly.Gavi’s challenge on RodriThe clip shows Gavi flying in on his international teammate in what appeared to be a typically combative training moment between two of Spain’s most competitive midfielders. Despite being on the same side for La Roja, the pair showed that the intensity never drops, even behind closed doors. The incident has drawn attention not just for the challenge itself, but because of who was on the receiving end. Rodri: A Real Madrid targetRodri has been linked with a move to Real Madrid this summer. (Photo by Carl Recine/Getty Images)Rodri has been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid in recent months, with the Spanish giants reportedly keen on reuniting the World Cup winner with the national team setup at club level. The midfielder has long been regarded as one of the finest in the world in his position, making him a prime target for Los Blancos as they look to bolster their engine room. This is despite the fact that Real Madrid camp has distanced themselves from Rodri rumours, as the club look for a younger alternative in midfield. In any case, Rodri was able to get up quickly and it doesn’t appear that the midfielder has picked up an injury.

‘He’s getting better fast’ – Lamine Yamal update offered by Spain boss Luis de la Fuente
A CORUNA, SPAIN - JUNE 4: Lamine Yamal of Spain during the International Friendly match between Spain v Iraq at the Riazor on June 4, 2026 in A Coruna Spain (Photo by Maria Gracia Jimenez/Soccrates/Getty Images) | Getty Images Spain boss Luis de la Fuente says Lamine Yamal is “getting better fast” from his hamstring injury ahead of World Cup 2026.There’s been plenty of debate about Yamal’s fitness, with speculation that he may not play in the opening group games.De la Fuente says he expects Yamal to be passed fit in time for the tournament but added a decision has not yet been made on whether he will face Cape Verde in Spain’s opener.“He’s getting better fast, hitting all the targets earlier,” he told the Guardian. “I think he’ll be able to play the first game, but that doesn’t mean [he will]. “We’ll evaluate if he has to play a little bit, not play, wait for the second game.”There was also plenty of praise for the Barcelona teenager who will be expected to impress at the World Cup this summer.“Lamine was born for this. He has a daring character. Maybe that [pressure] would have overwhelmed you or me. But these guys are special,” he added.“How many times have we asked of a player: ‘How good was that guy, what happened to him? Why didn’t he make it?’ Because you have to be good at football and a thousand things more. “Lamine was 16 [at the Euros], 18 now, he puts up with a brutal media pressure and makes very few errors. One minute, one mistake, and the focus is on that; that’s not fair. There are hours, days, with physios, nutritionists, psychologists, coaches … it’s the work, the values.”Spain’s first game is on June 15th against Cape Verde, followed by a clash with Saudi Arabia on June 21st.

IND vs AFG Day 1: Shubman Gill, KL Rahul score centuries as India post 368/3
NEW CHANDIGARH: India’s score of 368/3 at stumps suggests the one-off Test against Afghanistan followed an expected script on Day One here on Saturday. Shubman Gill batting on 103 with Rishabh Pant unbeaten on 50, KL Rahul scoring 100 and Sai Sudharsan’s 81 on a seemingly benign track wore down a rookie Afghan attack in the extreme heat. There was nothing on this dreary day of Test cricket that would make one sit up and take notice. Yet, the first session of play can’t escape the scrutiny in the Indian camp. Both openers Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal got one reprieve each. Jaiswal was dropped at gully on 11 and Afghanistan didn’t opt to review Rahul getting a clear outside edge on 16. After Jaiswal was eventually caught behind for 24, tangled down the leg-side, No. 3 Sai Sudharsan survived a chance early in his innings at first slip off left-arm spinner Nangyal Kharoti. It was evidenced that the Indian top-order couldn’t dust off the rust after turning up to play the Test barely a week after the IPL finished. The three lead seamers Zia ur Rahman, Azamatullah Omarzai and Saleem Safi kept the ball consistently in challenging areas outside the off-stump. Switching formats is never easy and one could cut the Indian openers for not being as dominant as they should have been. But, given the experience behind them, such a scratchy start must be unsettling for their reputation.Captain Gill and former vice-captain Pant eventually played flawless last session to restore normalcy and the expected dominance over the Afghan attack.Sai battling the leg-side trapOn his debut tour of England last year, the English team exposed a weakness in Sudharsan’s game for the world to exploit. England skipper Ben Stokes laid a leg-side trap off the seamers from the word go and Sudharsan invariably fell for it.Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi didn’t waste any time either when Sudharsan walked out to bat. The trap was laid and Sudharsan managed to survive scoring heavily on the on-side to get his innings off to a rollicking start. But that resulted in some indecisive shots outside the off-stump. Sudharsan was dropped twice at first slip before wicketkeeper Afsar Zazai pouched him off Saleem. After play, Sudharsan conceded that he worked a lot on his leg-side game after the England tour. “When it happened in England, it was definitely something new for me. So, I went back and worked on it and got improved ideas on it which helped me today. I was not thinking about the trap today and just looking at the ball,” Sudharsan said.“I worked on it in Chennai. I understood what was happening. I played a lot of balls and saw what options I can take. It was more tactical than something technical,” he added. With the pitch slowing down and likely to crack quickly under the blazing sun, one may expect the two overnight batters Gill and Pant to cut loose early on Sunday morning.Brief scores: India 368/ 3 (S Gill 103*, KL Rahul 100, S Sudharsan 81, Saleem 2/67) vs Afghanistan.

Report: Goretzka reconsidering Juventus move due to Milan crisis
Report: Goretzka reconsidering Juventus move due to Milan crisisLeon Goretzka is reportedly reconsidering his transfer destination, with Juventus emerging as a serious option after the organizational collapse at AC Milan stalled what had appeared to be an imminent move to the Rossoneri. The 31-year-old allowed his contract at Bayern Munich to run down and has been a free agent available to negotiate freely since the end of the Bundesliga season. Milan had been viewed as the frontrunners for his signature, with reports suggesting talks had advanced to a meaningful stage – but that momentum has since evaporated entirely.Goretzka’s Change of Heart Amid Milan TurmoilAccording to Tuttomercatoweb and MilanNews, Goretzka is now reconsidering his options after Milan’s institutional crisis rendered the club effectively unable to conduct any transfer business. The Rossoneri fired their coach, director of sport, CEO, and technical director in one fell swoop the day after failing to qualify for the Champions League, leaving no one in position to negotiate, let alone identify targets for next season. With Milan in that leadership vacuum, Goretzka’s thinking has shifted. Italian reports frame this as a structural problem rather than a sporting rejection – the Germany international had reportedly prioritised a move to Serie A, and Milan’s disorder has simply removed them from the picture for now. As the chaos at Milan illustrates, a club without a functioning sporting structure cannot compete in the transfer market regardless of the appeal of the project.Juventus Preparing Renewed Proposal for GoretzkaJuventus are reportedly preparing a renewed proposal for Goretzka, looking to capitalise on the opening Milan’s crisis has created. The Bianconeri have been tracking him for some time and the free-agent status makes the financial profile attractive, even if wages will be a consideration given the club’s ongoing need to manage its books carefully – something John Elkann has signalled spending commitment to address this summer.Goretzka would bring Champions League experience and physicality to a midfield that Juventus are actively looking to reshape. Arsenal and Olympique Marseille are also in the picture, and Max Allegri is said to be keen on taking him to Napoli, which means the Bianconeri are operating in a competitive market for his signature. The coming weeks will be decisive – any sign of Goretzka’s camp formalising talks with a Premier League club would significantly reduce Juventus’s leverage, making the timing of their proposal critical.

Berrada’s Bruno admission sparks concern as United chief says ‘we’d like him to stay’
Berrada’s Bruno admission sparks concern as United chief says ‘we’d like him to stay’Manchester United CEO Omar Berrada has stopped short of guaranteeing Bruno Fernandes will remain at Old Trafford, telling the Inside Carrington podcast only that the club would ‘like’ the captain to stay.Speaking to The Guardian, Berrada offered warm words but no firm commitment when pressed on the 31-year-old’s future. His exact phrasing matters here.“We’d like him to stay, of course we do. He’s had a great season on the pitch but more importantly he’s shown to everybody that he is a great leader. People don’t see what he does outside of the pitch. He understands the values of the club really well and I think we’ve seen him help a lot of the younger signings.” – Omar Berrada🔴 Follow Stretty News on Google as a preferred source and be first with every United update. What Berrada’s comments mean for Bruno FernandesIn football executive language, ‘we’d like him to stay’ is categorically not the same as ‘he is staying’. Any CEO confident in retaining their captain simply says so. The hedge is the headline.Fernandes’s contract expires next summer, with an option for an additional 12 months. For context on where those contract discussions currently stand, the situation has been fluid for months. Berrada’s reluctance to issue a flat guarantee – on a player who just recorded 21 Premier League assists and won Football Writers’ Footballer of the Year – is the kind of cautious language that rightly raises alarm.Fernandes himself has sent mixed signals throughout the season. In November he told Canal 11 he felt the club had essentially been indifferent to whether he left, saying: “from the club’s side, I felt a bit of: ‘If you go, it’s not really that bad for us.'” By March, speaking to ESPN, he was back to framing United as the place where he wants to win the Premier League. Both things can be true, and that ambiguity is precisely the problem. Can United afford to lose Bruno Fernandes?Berrada has publicly stated he believes United can win the Premier League within the next two years. That is an aggressive timeline, and it is difficult to square with the idea of letting the side’s most creative force – 21 assists, Football Writers’ Footballer of the Year – walk out of Carrington.United have already agreed a £35m fee with Atalanta for Brazilian midfielder Éderson, and the club’s wider midfield recruitment planning continues. But none of those additions fill the leadership and creative void that Fernandes’s departure would create. Berrada has spoken about not letting agents or market forces dictate United’s decisions – alas, the absence of a public ‘he’s not for sale’ stance does precisely the opposite of that. What happens when credible bids arrive – and from Saudi Arabia or a Champions League contender, they will – will tell United fans everything they need to know about whether INEOS’s rebuild is built around Bruno or merely alongside him for now.

Belief but work to do – Wales' two years under Bellamy
Craig Bellamy scored 19 goals in 78 appearances as a player for Wales [Getty Images]Wales' 2-1 loss to Romania brought an end to Craig Bellamy's second year as head coach of the Red Dragons. The former striker landed the role in July 2024 following the departure of Robert Page. There have been both highs and lows so far - with promotion to Nations League A followed by World Cup qualifying heartache. As Wales begin their three-month wait to return to action on the back of friendly disappointment in Bucharest, BBC Sport Wales takes a closer look at Bellamy's time in charge so far.Wales must be better after Romania woe - BellamyBellamy rejects club offers to commit to WalesBellamy's recordThe contest in Bucharest was Wales' 20th fixture under Bellamy. They have won eight of those matches at a rate of 40%, drawing seven (when including the World Cup play-off semi-final with Bosnia & Herzegovina) and losing five.Gary Speed and Ryan Giggs both had highly impressive win rates of 50%, although Bellamy's predecessor Page - the only Wales manager in history to manage at two major tournaments - had a win rate of 33%.Chris Coleman - the architect of Wales' stunning run to the semi-finals at Euro 2016 - had a win rate of 39% in his 49 games as boss between 2012 and 2017.Under Bellamy, Wales have scored 34 goals at an average of 1.7 per game and conceded 24 times.Connor Roberts, who made his long-awaited return from an Achilles injury as a substitute in the defeat by Romania, said: "In general I think we're doing well. We're progressing and learning."We just have to sharpen up in areas and stay focused and switched on for the whole game in every game."Highs and lowsCraig Bellamy worked as an assistant to Bayern Munich boss Vincent Kompany at Anderlecht and Burnley [Getty Images]Bellamy became the first Wales manager to go unbeaten in his first four games at the helm when his side beat Montenegro 1-0 in October 2024.That impressive start was stretched to a nine-match unbeaten run under Bellamy before losing 4-3 to Belgium in a thrilling World Cup qualifier in June 2025.However, after such a promising beginning - which included promotion into Nations League A - the going has been significantly tougher.Wales suffered play-off semi-final heartache as they were beaten on penalties by Bosnia and Herzegovina - which ended their hopes of reaching successive World Cups for the first time in their history.Having twice lost to Belgium in addition to being beaten by Canada and England in friendlies, Wales are yet to win against a team ranked higher than them since Bellamy took charge."There's stuff to improve on, for sure," goal scorer David Brooks said after the Romania defeat, adding it is "bitterly disappointing" that Wales will not be at the World Cup.The schedule only gets tougher in the second half of 2026 as Bellamy's men take on Portugal, Norway and Denmark in the top tier of the Nations League - with all three of their opponents being ranked higher than Wales by Fifa."It's going to be tough in the Nations League, our group has got top, top teams in it, so it's going to be difficult," added Burnley right-back Roberts."But that's why you play football, to play against the best footballers on the biggest stage."Evolving squadBellamy has regularly been keen to stress the need for Wales to increase and improve their player pool. The 46-year-old has used 37 different players during his tenure to date.He has also handed seven players - Karl Darlow, Dylan Lawlor, Ronan Kpakio, Kai Andrews, Joel Colwill, Isaak Davies and Cameron Congreve - their senior Wales debuts.Qualifying for Euro 2028 remains the long-term aim for Wales and Bellamy, and blooding young talent has been viewed as a necessity to strengthen the nation's long-term prospects. Now halfway through his four-year contract with the Football Association of Wales, there are clearly signs of evolution, although there is work still to be done.Assessing his two years in the hotseat after the loss to Romania, Bellamy said: "We're definitely very different, two years older."It's been really enjoyable, there's a lot of stuff I really like that we've been able to do."But also it's so, so clear, I feel that if we want to improve, these are the areas we need to improve on."Bellamy, who has been linked with several clubs in recent months, has clearly not lost his appetite for the Wales job."That excites me as well because I do like the team, I like how we play, but we need to be better in certain areas," he added."That's going to allow us to be able to compete with the top, top teams on a regular basis - because that's where we want to be and we're going to be tested now on that in Nations League A. "It's going to test everything about us. That's where we want to be and that's where we want to stay, so a lot of work to do."Bellamy sees Koumas future at centre-forward

Liverpool interest in £100m wonderkid confirmed
Liverpool interest in £100m wonderkid confirmedLiverpool keeping close watch on Kroupi as Bournemouth prepare for transfer interestLiverpool’s summer planning is already generating intrigue, and one of the names attracting growing attention is Eli Junior Kroupi. The teenage forward enjoyed a remarkable breakthrough campaign with Bournemouth and has quickly become one of the most talked-about young talents in European football.Liverpool are among the clubs monitoring Kroupi’s situation closely despite the significant financial commitment required to secure his signature. Bournemouth are understood to value the striker at more than £100 million after a sensational first season in the Premier League.Kroupi emergence has transformed Bournemouth’s outlookBournemouth’s decision to sign Kroupi from Lorient for around £12 million now looks like one of the shrewdest pieces of business in recent years. At just 19 years of age, the French attacker delivered 13 Premier League goals during his debut campaign, establishing himself as one of the division’s most dangerous young forwards. His development under Andoni Iraola has been particularly impressive. Speaking to BBC Match of the Day earlier in the season, Iraola praised the youngster’s natural instincts in front of goal.“Junior is a finisher. His strength is that he smells the opportunities. His finishing is very good with his right foot and left foot.”Those qualities have become increasingly evident throughout the campaign. Kroupi has demonstrated an impressive variety to his game, scoring from distance, finishing volleys, converting instinctive chances inside the penalty area and producing moments of individual brilliance when Bournemouth needed inspiration. With Liverpool now beginning a new era under Iraola, links between the club and Kroupi have inevitably intensified.Liverpool weighing future attacking optionsLiverpool’s recruitment model has long focused on identifying elite talent before players reach their absolute peak. Kroupi fits that profile perfectly. The striker possesses technical quality, composure and an instinctive understanding of space that cannot easily be taught. More importantly, he has already shown he can produce consistently in one of the most demanding leagues in world football. There is no suggestion that Liverpool are preparing an immediate move, particularly given the strength of their current attacking options. However, when a teenager finishes among the Premier League’s leading scorers, it becomes impossible for top clubs to ignore his progress. The challenge is Bournemouth’s valuation. Any club pursuing Kroupi would need to commit a substantial fee, reflecting both his current ability and his enormous long-term potential.Mick Brown outlines transfer realityFormer Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown believes Liverpool are naturally among the clubs paying attention to the Bournemouth star.Speaking to Football Insider, Brown said: “Liverpool will certainly be interested in Kroupi.“He will be on their radar, as he will with most of the top clubs in Europe because of the season he’s just had for Bournemouth.“When a 19-year-old is performing the way he has been at this level, it’s always going to attract interest from the biggest clubs not just in England but in Europe.“From Bournemouth’s point of view, of course they would like to keep him, but they’ve shown before they’re willing to sell players.“If somebody like Liverpool comes in with a huge offer for him, I’m sure they’ll be prepared to accept it and then they can go and find a replacement.”Brown’s assessment reflects the reality facing Bournemouth. Success inevitably attracts attention, and Kroupi’s rise has been impossible to overlook.Bournemouth face battle to keep rising starFor Bournemouth supporters, the priority will be seeing Kroupi continue his development at the club. Yet modern football rarely allows emerging stars to remain hidden for long.Liverpool, alongside several elite European clubs, will undoubtedly continue monitoring his progress over the coming months. Whether any side is prepared to meet Bournemouth’s lofty valuation remains another matter entirely. What appears certain is that Kroupi has moved beyond the category of promising prospect. His performances have elevated him into conversations usually reserved for established stars, and at just 19 years old, his ceiling remains exceptionally high.Bournemouth may not want to sell, but if Kroupi continues on his current trajectory, interest from Liverpool and other major clubs is only likely to grow stronger.

Anthony Gordon reveals what Marcus Rashford has told him about Barcelona after €80m transfer
WEST PALM BEACH, FLORIDA - JUNE 03: Marcus Rashford and Anthony Gordon of England interact as they walk out for a training session on June 03, 2026 in West Palm Beach, Florida. (Photo by Eddie Keogh - The FA/The FA via Getty Images) | The FA via Getty Images Anthony Gordon has revealed what Marcus Rashford has told him about Barcelona after linking up with his fellow forward on international duty with England.Rashford has spent the season on loan at Barcelona and is hoping to stay, while Gordon has signed from Newcastle in a deal worth around 80 million euros. The two have been pictured chatting together while on international duty, and Gordon was asked what they have been talking about after England’s 1-0 win over New Zealand on Saturday.“He was just telling me how good the lads are there, the team spirit that they have, which I heard already from the people in Barca,” he told talkSPORT.“So I’m really looking forward to joining up with them. He was also telling me about the city, places to live. He’s a lovely guy, very caring. So he was just giving me a bit of information.”Gordon will wear the No. 18 for England at World Cup 2026 and Rashford the No. 11, but the new Barcelona star isn’t reading anything into that.“I couldn’t care less. I think if you go through this team, you could put any player 1-11. We’re all good enough. We’ve all got a case to feel like we’re the best in many ways,” he added.“So I couldn’t care less about the number. I’m here to win for England. I don’t care about me individually, or me personally. It’s not about me. It’s about the team. So give me whatever number you want to give me. I couldn’t care less.”England are currently preparing for an opening group game against Croatia on Wednesday.

Transfer rumour roundup: Liverpool shut door on Bayern’s Rio Ngumoha pursuit; Everton push ahead for HackneyToday's transfer rumours feature Liverpool's stance on Rio Ngumoha and Everton's move for Hayden Hackney. The Athletic's David Ornstein dropped a Bundesliga bombshell on Friday with the announcement that Bayern Munich are keen on Rio Ngumoha. After Barcelona hijacked their deal forAnthony Gordon, the German giants have turned towards Liverpool whizkid Ngumoha. No contact has been made, but interest from Germany is genuine. However, Liverpool have no intention of selling the 17-year-old, who made his senior England debut on Saturday.Sticking at Anfield,Curtis Jones has reportedly been chatting to Federico Chiesa about life in Italy. Inter Milan are pursuing a deal for the midfielder, who has just 12 months to run on his deal, and Jones appears receptive to the approach.Chiesa, meanwhile, has suggested he's set to be off too, after two seasons spent largely warming the bench.Crossing over town to Hill Dickinson Stadium, and Everton areleading the race for Hayden Hackney.TheMiddlesbrough midfielder seems certain for a Premier League transfer and the Toffees have put on the charm offensive. Crystal Palace, Nottingham Forest and Tottenham Hotspur also like the 22-year-old, but it's the Blues in the driving seat.Arsenal have made an approach for PSG defender Emmanuel Mbemba on a free transfer this summer, according to the BBC. Fabrizio Romano: Liverpool ace ‘keen’ for summer move, has sought teammate for advice on transfer
Fabrizio Romano: Liverpool ace ‘keen’ for summer move, has sought teammate for advice on transferFabrizio Romano has claimed that one Liverpool player is ‘keen’ on a move elsewhere this summer and has reportedly sought the advice of one teammate at Anfield.A few weeks ago, the Italian transfer guru claimed that Inter Milan are interested in signing Curtis Jones, who could emerge as a ‘really interesting option’ as he enters the final year of his contract with the Reds.DOWNLOAD THE OFFICIAL EMPIRE OF THE KOP APP FOR ALL THE LATEST & BREAKING UPDATES – STRAIGHT TO YOUR PHONE! ON APPLE & GOOGLE PLAYHe’s not been the only player in Andoni Iraola’s squad linked with a summer move to Italy, with Como understood to be eyeing Federico Chiesa, and there’s seemingly been a conversation between those two players in the days leading to the start of the summer transfer window.Romano: Jones ‘keen’ on move to InterOn Saturday night, Romano claimed on his eponymous YouTube channel that the Scouse midfielder would be open to joining the Nerazzurri and has spoken with his Italian teammate at Liverpool about life in Serie A.The reporter said: “Inter are very interested in Curtis Jones. Inter are talking to Liverpool. Inter are starting around €20m [£17.3m], Liverpool want more than €30m [£25.9m], maybe including a sell-on clause and bonuses, so there’s still a big gap between Inter and Liverpool, but the deal is on. [Jones] is keen on the move and Chiesa said Jones asked him how life is in Italy.”Want more Empire of the Kop coverage? Add us as a preferred source on Google to your favourites list for news you can trustLiverpool must do their utmost to persuade Jones to stayOn the face of it, the figures quoted by Romano seem to be rather underselling Jones, a 25-year-old England international who’s won the Premier League and accrued plenty of elite-level experience. However, it reflects the delicate nature of his contract situation, with renewal negotiations understood to be yielding minimal progress and Liverpool left to contemplate whether a summer sale might be best in order to avoid yet another free transfer exit from Anfield in 12 months’ time.If Jones is indeed eager to join the Serie A champions and has sought Chiesa’s advice, he may well push for the move to happen, in which case the Reds would be fighting against the tide to try and keep him. That said, LFC must try their hardest to keep the academy graduate at his hometown club, partly for homegrown quota reasons but also because of his importance to the squad in terms of his experience, versatility and deep-rooted love for the badge.Hopefully the appointment of Iraola might at least persuade the 25-year-old to be a bit more patient and see how he gets on with the new head coach before making a definitive decision on whether to make the leap to Italy.

‘Full of positive energy’ – What UK media said about Ngumoha after ‘livewire’ debut for England
‘Full of positive energy’ – What UK media said about Ngumoha after ‘livewire’ debut for EnglandRio Ngumoha has come in for plenty of praise from the UK media after making his senior debut for England on Saturday. The 17-year-old isn’t in Thomas Tuchel’s squad for the World Cup but has been included for the travelling selection for two warm-up friendlies prior to the tournament, and he played the second half of the 1-0 victory over New Zealand in Tampa.DOWNLOAD THE OFFICIAL EMPIRE OF THE KOP APP FOR ALL THE LATEST & BREAKING UPDATES – STRAIGHT TO YOUR PHONE! ON APPLE & GOOGLE PLAYIn the process, the Liverpool teenager became the fifth-youngest Three Lions debutant in history at 17 years and 281 days, eclipsing two former Reds players in Raheem Sterling (17y, 342d in November 2012) and Michael Owen (18y, 59d in February 1998).Although some may have expected England’s margin of victory to have been greater, Ngumoha’s performance received widely positive reviews as he represented his country at senior level for the first time. What did UK media say about Ngumoha after England debut?Oli Gent of The Standard wrote: ‘A livewire off the right flank, using his trickery and quick feet to good effect on his senior debut. Full of confidence, as shown by his double drag-back late on to bamboozle his marker.’ (8/10)For GOAL, Mark Doyle summarised: ‘The Liverpool teenager obviously isn’t in the World Cup squad but he was full of positive energy.’ (6/10)Charlie Malam of the Daily Express gave Ngumoha a 7/10 but was a bit more critical, writing: ‘His end product, from his weaker foot, was inconsistent with some overhit crosses and he should have done better with a pass into [Ivan] Toney but looked like he could make things happen.’Elsewhere, Sky Sports‘ Nick Wright hailed a ‘lively showing’ from the Reds winger in his match report, while on talkSPORT, Adrian Durham claimed that Arsenal duo Bukayo Saka and Noni Madueke ‘are lucky to be in the squad’ ahead of him.(Photo by Rich Storry/Getty Images)Want more Empire of the Kop coverage? Add us as a preferred source on Google to your favourites list for news you can trustEncouraging signs from Ngumoha on his England debutIt’s hard to read a great deal into a pre-tournament friendly played in stifling heat in which every England player had just 45 minutes on the pitch, but there was still enough evidence from Ngumoha to warrant his inclusion in the travelling squad. In addition to the largely positive reviews from the British media, the 17-year-old’s match statistics (via (Sofascore) paint a positive picture of how he fared on his national team debut against a New Zealand side who’ll also be at the World Cup.Such has been the impression made by the teenager at Liverpool in the 2025/26 season that Bayern Munich have reportedly been exploring a move for him, but Anfield chiefs are unsurprisingly in no mood to even entertain the idea of selling him (The Athletic).Wayne Rooney has described Ngumoha as a ‘joy to watch‘ over the past few months, and the Reds winger did his chances of future selection by Tuchel no harm with how he performed on his senior England bow on Saturday.

Bournemouth player makes exciting Liverpool prediction for next season with Iraola now in chargeLiverpool are ‘absolutely’ capable of winning the Premier League with Andoni Iraola in charge next season, according to one player who’s worked under the Reds’ new head coach. The Spaniard was confirmed as Arne Slot’s successor in the Anfield dugout on Thursday evening and will be tasked with instigating a revival on Merseyside after the 2025 champions slumped to a fifth-place finish in the most recent top-flight campaign.DOWNLOAD THE OFFICIAL EMPIRE OF THE KOP APP FOR ALL THE LATEST & BREAKING UPDATES – STRAIGHT TO YOUR PHONE! NBA Makes Crucial Decision on Mitchell Robinson’s Technical Foul For Brush Up With Victor Wembanyama in Game 2
The New York Knicks have escaped the San Antonio Spurs to build a 2-0 lead in their NBA Finals series. Jordan Pickford hails England’s fearless teenage debutant Rio Ngumoha
Jordan Pickford heaped praised on fearless teenage debutant Rio Ngumoha as England’s World Cup preparations offered an exciting glimpse of the future.Saturday’s unremarkable 1-0 friendly win against New Zealand in Tampa was a moment to cherish for the 17-year-old Liverpool talent, having become the national team’s fifth-youngest debutant.Training squad member Ngumoha showed some promising moments as he stepped up, with right wingers Bukayo Saka and Noni Madueke absent after Arsenal’s players were given time off after last weekend’s Champions League final.Long-serving England goalkeeper Pickford said of the teenager: “He was quality, nothing fazed him.Rio Ngumoha became England’s fifth-youngest debutant (Bradley Collyer/PA) (PA Wire)“He’s had a really good season at Liverpool and the manager gave him his debut and he showed how good he is.“All the young lads have been brilliant in training, they have moulded into the squad and helped us massively and it also shows the talent we have in the system.“It is a credit to the academies and the pathway we have in English football.”Josh King and Ethan Nwaneri, both 19, are other training group players along with 22-year-old Alex Scott, who will all be hoping to follow Ngumoha by making their England debuts in Wednesday’s friendly against Costa Rica. That fixture offers manager Thomas Tuchel a final chance to fine-tune ahead of England’s Group L opener against Croatia on June 17, when Pickford will start as number one at a fifth-straight major tournament.“I take a lot of pride in it,” the England shot-stopper said. “There have been a lot of keepers challenging along the way and I credit myself for improving week-in week-out at Everton.“I always give myself targets to improve and there is nothing better than putting the England shirt on. Everyone knows how passionate I am and that is immense pride for me and my family.”Pickford has seen a lot of players come and go during that time, with Phil Foden, Cole Palmer and Harry Maguire among the most eye-catching exclusions from this summer’s World Cup squad.“Every squad evolves,” he said. “Even 2018, my first World Cup, we were six or seven or maybe eight at our first tournament.“It’s unfortunate for the lads that don’t get picked but I’m not the manager and don’t have to make those decisions.“I put myself in contention and work hard like everyone else but the competition is there with England. The manager picks the final squad and we believe in the manager.“We know we have to work hard and that is what we are doing.”England made the 200-mile trip back to their West Palm Beach base – having beaten New Zealand – as World Cup preparations continue at a more laidback pace than when they move to Kansas City next weekend.“The manager has been quite open in this camp,” Pickford added.“We’re here to train but we have downtime if people want to see families or they want to go to the shops or for a meal or to play golf, like I like to do.“Once we get to Kansas we know it’s game on. This 10-day block is about getting work in your legs, messages into our legs and when we get to Kansas we’ll be ready.”

Bengals forcing an Alvin Kamara trade wouldn’t make sense
The Cincinnati Bengals are in win-now mode. But it’s a measured thing, not just something that features the front office making reckless moves. Hence, the Alvin Kamara idea making the rounds a little too silly. For what it’s worth, ESPN’s Dan Graziano recently suggested the Bengals might end up being a trade fit for Kamara with the New Orleans Saints “It's hard to see a team offering too much for Kamara at this point in his career,” Graziano wrote. “But if he lands in the right kind of backfield and the right kind of role, he could have a chance to go out with a bang. Maybe a place such as Cincinnati or Green Bay has a way to use him to help the offense.”It’s just an idea, of course. But this is where the Bengals being “all-in” starts to create some issues. Kamara will turn 31 this summer and has had problems staying on the field. Plus, he’s a $10.4 million cap hit in 2026. The Bengals already have Chase Brown as the workhorse back. He’s an extension candidate one year removed from going for 1,019 yards and six scores on a 4.4 average with another 69 catches, 437 yards and five scores. Samaje Perine is the veteran spell and pass-blocker they really like. Kamara might be fun in a Joe Burrow offense. But so might a lot of weapons around the NFL. The logistics have to match up, and with this one, they just don’t. This article originally appeared on Bengals Wire: Bengals forcing an Alvin Kamara trade wouldn’t make sense

Rays’ Coach Ozzie Timmons A Fixture With Tampa Spartans Baseball Family
PORT CHARLOTTE, FLORIDA - Ozzie Timmons of the Tampa Bay Rays is introduced prior to a spring training Spring Breakout game at Charlotte Sports Complex on March 13, 2025 in Port Charlotte, Florida. (Photo by Nick Cammett/Diamond Images via Getty Images)Diamond Images/Getty ImagesThirty-five years after he was selected in the fifth round of the MLB draft by the Chicago Cubs, Ozzie Timmons remains very much a part of the University of Tampa baseball family. Someone who knows him very well, Spartans coach Joe Urso, can attest to that.“It’s amazing that at the end of the major league season, which as we know is a nine-month grind with spring training and the regular season, he is here the next day for fall practice,” said Urso. “I am like, ‘Oz, take a break. You just had a long season.’ He loves giving back to the kids and this university.”Timmons would have it no other way. The 55-year-old Tampa native’s playing career at UT overlapped with Urso’s as well as that of associate head coach and pitching guru, Sam Militello. The latter, a sixth-round pick of the Yankees in 1990, has been alongside Urso in guiding the program for the last 26 seasons.“Joe, Sam and I played together, so it is easy to go back,” said Timmons, who throws batting practice and works with the outfielders, among other tasks. “I always volunteer because Joe makes it easy to volunteer. I volunteer in the fall and in the winter until I have to leave for spring training.” Timmons needs no introduction when it comes to baseball in Tampa Bay. He is part of a seemingly never-ending list of players and coaches who have been developed in the region. He has also had the opportunity during his career to return home to play and coach. Timmons a part of Tampa’s rich baseball heritageTimmons graduated from Brandon High School, about 15 miles east of the University of Tampa. He was a two-time All-American at the Division II powerhouse, which in addition to Timmons has produced a handful of big-league players, including Militello and Tino Martinez. It was an easy decision for Timmons to attend college close to home. The fact the Spartans, who this season became the first D-II program to win three straight national titles, played at a lower level did not matter. They routinely scheduled Division I programs at that time and several professional players, alumni or not, often assisted at practice.“Half our schedule was against D-I teams, so I did not need to go to a D-I school,” said Timmons. “When I help out at UT, I tell the players what it takes if they are thinking about going pro. When I was at UT, you had Tino Martinez, you had Fred McGriff, Gary Sheffield, Darnell Coles, all those guys working out with the players. I always tell people when I got the pro ball, I had an advantage because I knew what to expect and how to act.”Growing up in Tampa, Timmons had plenty to choose from in his backyard when it came to players for him to track.“We didn’t have (an MLB) team, so I followed all of the players from Tampa,” he said of a time before the Rays came into existence in 1998, and rattled off names such as Gooden, McGriff, Ty Griffin, Mike Heath, Floyd Youmans, Vance Lovelace and fellow Brandon High product Jody Reed. “I followed those guys and I played against Gary (Sheffield) in Little League. So, I gravitated toward all of the locals. You followed those from the neighborhood and the community.”Tampa Bay Devil Rays Ozzie Timmons is congratulated by coach Billy Hatcher after hitting a two-run home run in the second inning off the Yankees' Roger Clemens at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg on September 28, 2000. AFP PHOTO/PETER MUHLY (Photo by PETER MUHLY / AFP) (Photo by PETER MUHLY/AFP via Getty Images)AFP via Getty ImagesTimmons, who is giving of his time with Little League programs and other youth activities in his hometown, hit .235 in 186 games with the Cubs, Reds, Mariners and Devil Rays, as the team was known in 2000. He compiled a 1.062 OPS in a dozen games at the end of that season, his last in the big leagues. He hit his 20th and final MLB homer off the Yankees’ Roger Clemens at Tropicana Field. Two decades after Timmons’ playing career came to an end in the Mexican League, he is in his second stint on manager and Tampa native Kevin Cash’s staff. Currently the Rays’ assistant hitting coach, Timmons initially joined the organization in 2007 and had various roles in the minor league system and with the parent club. He was also the Milwaukee Brewers’ hitting coach for three seasons (2022-24) prior to returning to the Rays.Dishing advice to aspiring college playersTimmons noted there were instances in the not-too-distant past when at least 10 scouts showed up at UT with radar guns, stopwatches and note pads in hand. During intrasquad games in the fall! Urso, who has guided the Spartans to eight titles, pointed out the program has produced the fourth-most draft picks in the state (behind Florida, Florida State and Miami) the past two decades despite having a maximum of nine scholarships to offer per year. Those facts serve as exclamation points when it comes to educating young players who may feel committing to a D-I power is the only path to a professional career. “So many guys who want to play D-I get there and don’t play,” said Timmons. “I always tell kids they need to go where they are going to play, whether it’s DI or DII. It doesn’t matter. Sometimes the (major programs) have guys sit and wait a year or two. I ask them, ‘Are you willing to wait? Or are you going somewhere where you can compete for a job?’”A scout can only assess a player in person or on video if the player in question is receiving at least some time on the mound, in the field or at the plate. “You are going to be seen, especially in Florida,” Timmons emphasized. “That’s the whole point about needing to go someplace where you are going to play.”Those who learn the hard way and transfer down a level after a couple of years are not guaranteed a thing. That is the way it should be. That is that way it is at UT under Urso, which is something Timmons appreciates immensely.“Joe makes it a competition regardless of who comes on board,” he said. “No matter where you come from you are not guaranteed a job. Guys that come to UT and think because they are transferring from D-I means they are going to start? Well, no. You still have to earn it. There’s always competition (at UT) and that's the beauty of it.”Having someone who has been there and done that is the beauty of it for Urso, who served as a coach in the Angels’ system for a few years before returning to his alma mater where he was a .332 career hitter and a member of UT’s first (of 11) championship squad 1992. “The boys love Ozzie,” he said. “They get perspective from an experienced major league player and coach. He’s a great friend and he loves giving back. He was one of our best players and a captain that we all looked up to.”This article was originally published on Forbes.com

Johnson Wagner says what was really ‘weird’ about the crowds at Memorial on Saturday
Photo by Dylan Buell/Getty ImagesJohnson Wagner has spoken about what he found really strange as he followed the final group for the handful of holes they managed to play on Saturday during the third round of the Memorial Tournament. The leaders will have to play more than 30 holes on Sunday at Muirfield Village, with J.T. Poston and Ryan Gerard on the sixth green when the horn was blown to suspend play on Saturday. Both men are chasing what would be the biggest wins of their career to date. However, there are some extremely impressive names inside the top 20 as play prepares to resume in Ohio.Johnson Wagner says what he noticed about the crowds on Saturday at the Memorial TournamentTommy Fleetwood is among the players tied for fifth, while Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler are eight shots off the lead on one under par for the tournament.Scheffler’s performance was particularly notable, with the 29-year-old five under par through one six-hole stretch. At that stage, he was three under par for the tournament and certainly not to be ruled out.Photo by Ian Johnson/Icon Sportswire via Getty ImagesTwo bogeys on his last three holes of the day took some shine off of his display. Nevertheless, Johnson Wagner told Scorecard on CBS that there was a surreal feeling around the leaders largely due to Scheffler’s efforts.“It was crazy with the final group. There were people out there, but you knew where the crowds were. They were up ahead with Rory and with Scottie,” he said.“And you could definitely feel in that last group, it was weird, it was like, where are all the people? We knew right where they were, they were following the world number one. And this is a golf course he’s won the last two years at this tournament, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he did make a little run in the morning and do something special again tomorrow.”Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler may be running out of time at Muirfield VillageThe amount of rain Muirfield Village received on Saturday means that the test is likely to be significantly different for the remainder of the tournament.Jack’s Place had resembled a US Open test at times. But the course is going to be considerably softer on Sunday. It remains to be seen whether that benefits the players who are a lot further along in their third rounds. Much like Justin Thomas at the PGA Championship, they have an opportunity to post an early score and see where they end up.However, Wagner admitted that it should be the two leaders who are most grateful for the stoppage.“Unfortunately for Rory, I think he’s going to run out of holes and I think this golf course is going to get a lot easier. So the guys like J.T. and Gerard, I think having the ability to go play a softer Muirfield Village for 12 holes to finish the third round benefits the guys who have the most holes to play,” he said.It would certainly be exciting for the majority of the fans if one of the world’s best two players can make a real charge on Sunday. At the very least, it will help whet the appetite for the US Open at Shinnecock Hills later this month.

How did Lincoln win the D-II softball title? The only way it knew how.
PROVIDENCE – Giving up a comfortable lead and trailing by two in the fifth inning would have been enough to derail plenty of teams. But the Lincoln softball team was right where it wanted to be.Nobody was better playing from behind better than the Lions and after Saturday, nobody in Division II was better than them either. The offense came up with the perfect response to a deficit and Molly Ganim showed poise that goes far beyond her years, as she shut down Ponaganset the rest of the way and helped Lincoln close out a 9-6 win to give the program the D-II title.“It was just amazing. I’ve never felt anything louder,” said Ganim of the postgame celebration. “I’ve never heard anything louder. It just felt crazy.”It looked like Lincoln had the game won in the first inning, right up until it looked like a coaching decision was going to cost it dearly.Ponaganset showed its nerves for the first time this season, letting defensive miscues give the Lions four runs in the first inning. Lincoln gave one back with an error of its own in the third and in the fourth, Ganim surrendered a two-out RBI single to Hayleigh Mooney that made it 4-2.The freshman didn’t come out for the fifth, as coach Alyssa McCoart elected to go with Kayleigh Gouchie. It’s a move McCoart has done plenty this season – starting one and using the other in relief – but Saturday was one of the few times where it backfired.Claire Barrett greeted Gouchie with a single, which was followed by an RBI double by Cora Miller. With momentum now in their dugout, the Chieftains scored two more runs before McCoart went back out to get Gouchie and put Ganim back in the circle.Getting pulled is a tough circumstance for any high school athlete, but Ganim didn’t let it affect her focus. She might not have been in the circle, but she was locked in in case the call came and she had to go back out there.Ganim gave up a single to LaMountain that made it 6-4, but retired the next batter to end the inning, then closed the game retiring six of the final seven Chieftains she faced.“I try to just stay in a good mindset and keep locking them down,” Ganim said. “I was a little disappointed [in coming out] but I believe in my team.“… I knew I could do it. I was just telling myself I could do it and it just felt really good to get it down.”“She is incredible,” Whyte said. “Her mindset, she’s in there, she doesn’t get in her head, she goes out there and performs. It’s great to see, especially as a freshman.”Lincoln should have never trailed in this game, but it wasn’t affected by suddenly being down 6-4. Instead, the Lions went out to do what they did best this spring – go pull off another comeback.Chloe Landry opened with a single and Lucia Whyte picked up a one-out walk, with both scoring on a two-out double by Brooke Lambert that tied the game. A Ponaganset error allowed Lambert to score and the Lions had a lead on the scoreboard and an ace in the circle. They weren’t done either and put up two more in the sixth and making the two-run deficit seem like a distant memory.“We find motivation,” Ganim said. “We can all do it, no matter what inning it is, how many outs we have, we can all come out strong.”“We know we got his,” said Whyte of what the team talked about before batting in the fifth. “We came this far. We had the Sunday game available, but we knew we had to go out and get it done [Saturday].“It’s the confidence in each other.”Ponaganset tried to rally, but Ganim wasn’t letting it happen. The Chieftains opened the double-elimination portion of the D-II tournament with a tough loss to No. 2 Johnston, then went on a four-game run where pitcher Mattea Mello became a star and clutch hits became commonplace.Losing wasn’t part of Saturday’s gameplan, but losing in the championship game didn’t seem possible with how the playoffs started. The season was terrific for the Chieftains and the experience will only help the program moving forward.“We really came together as a team in the playoffs,” Mello said. “It was great, our team clicked and I think we’re going to be ready for next season.“… We’re only losing one senior, the whole team’s pretty much going to be back and we’re going to be hungry.”Lincoln’s celebration was filled with excitement and joyful tears, mainly from Whyte, the program’s lone senior. In 2024 she was one of the players on the Lincoln-North Providence co-op team that was formed so both schools could have a season.Saturday, the idea that Lincoln was once a co-op didn’t seem possible. McCoart has guided the program to tremendous growth the last two seasons, but going from co-op to champion is an incredible leap.“It’s a dream for a senior to go out with a championship,” Lincoln’s Lucia Whyte said. “It is surreal.”This article originally appeared on The Providence Journal: Score from the 2026 RIIL Softball Division II Championship Game on Saturday

Glasner approves of Milan move but Rangnick not released by Austria yet
Glasner approves of Milan move but Rangnick not released by Austria yetReports on Sunday claim that Oliver Glasner has given his approval to a potential move to take over as head coach of Milan, but the Rossoneri are still hoping that the Austria national team will release Ralf Rangnick, who is under consideration to take over as sporting director.Where Milan stand in their hunt for a head coach and new directorsMilan are looking to build an entire new senior management team after parting company with head coach Massimiliano Allegri, sporting director Igli Tare, technical director Geoffrey Moncada and CEO Giorgio Furlani the day after the 2025-26 season ended.Various candidates have been linked with the head coach role, including the likes of Mauricio Pochettino, Matthias Jaissle and Arne Slot, but reports over the last week indicate that departing Crystal Palace boss Glasner is the leading candidate to take over.Glasner has met with representatives from Milan: His most recent round of talks were on Tuesday. La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that he presented the way he would like his Milan side to play in front of Gerry Cardinale and Zlatan Ibrahimovic and the Pink Paper claims that he is now just waiting for Milan’s go-ahead to start working as head coach. If a move to Milan does not materialise for Glasner, La Gazzetta dello Sport claims that he will take a brief sabbatical and wait for another opportunity to emerge at a ‘top’ club midway through the 2026-27 season.LEIPZIG, GERMANY – MAY 27: Oliver Glasner, Manager of Crystal Palace, celebrates with the UEFA Conference League trophy after his team’s victory in the UEFA Conference League Final 2026 match between Crystal Palace FC and Rayo Vallecano de Madrid at Football Arena Leipzig on May 27, 2026 in Leipzig, Germany. (Photo by Maja Hitij/Getty Images)USMNT head coach Pochettino, busy preparing for the 2026 World Cup, is described as Milan’s current no.2 option.Rangnick is also busy with World Cup preparations in the Austrian camp, and recent reports claim that the Austrian FA wish to hand their head coach a new contract extension that would see him through until EURO 2028.La Gazzetta dello Sport claims that the appointment of Glasner does not solely depend on whether or not Rangnick joins. The current alternative option to Rangnick is former Barcelona director Ramon Planes.

Newspaper claims Juventus have agreement with Sorloth but not with Atletico Madrid
Newspaper claims Juventus have agreement with Sorloth but not with Atletico MadridThere are mixed reports in Italy regarding Juventus and their interest in Atletico Madrid striker Alexander Sorloth, as one newspaper claims that the Bianconeri have an agreement on personal terms with the Norway international, while others claim that it will be an uphill battle to convince his current employers into selling.Where Juventus stand in pursuit of Atletico’s SorlothJuventus have recently learned that Dusan Vlahovic will not be extending his contract, which will expire at the end of the month, and now the Bianconeri are left needing a new starter at centre-forward.Recent reports claim that former loanee Randal Kolo Muani and Atletico Madrid’s Sorloth are the two leading options, and some reports claim that signing one does not rule out the signing of the other. As for Sorloth, the Corriere dello Sport claims that there is an agreement in principle on personal terms between Juventus and Sorloth’s camp, for a four-year contract worth €4m per season in wages. This is an increase on the €3m-per-year the 30-year-old currently earns in the Spanish capital. However, other outlets in Italy are less confident in Juventus’s ability to close a deal with Atletico.La Gazzetta dello Sport claims that Juve are not the only interested party and that there are plenty of suitors in the Premier League as well. Atletico are said to be taking their time in making a decision, with an eye on the World Cup, knowing that a strong set of performances may increase the striker’s market value.MADRID, SPAIN – SEPTEMBER 27: Alexander Sorloth of Atletico de Madrid celebrates scoring his team’s second goal during the LaLiga EA Sports match between Atletico de Madrid and Real Madrid CF at Riyadh Air Metropolitano on September 27, 2025 in Madrid, Spain. (Photo by Florencia Tan Jun/Getty Images)La Gazzetta dello Sport claims that a ‘bidding war’ is the ideal situation for Atletico, while Juventus have already established that they do not wish to spend any more than €30m on the potential signing of Sorloth.Juventus and Atletico are also discussing a permanent transfer for Nico Gonzalez, who spent the 2025-26 season on loan in Madrid, but as per Corriere dello Sport, the Argentine will not be included in a potential exchange deal involving Sorloth. For accountant reasons, these are two separate deals.

West Indies vs Sri Lanka 2nd ODI abandoned without a ball bowled as rain frustrates hosts
Persistent rain at Sabina Park in Kingston forced the abandonment of the second ODI between West Indies and Sri Lanka on Saturday, with not a single ball being bowled in the day-night encounter. The washout means Sri Lanka retain their 1-0 lead in the three-match series after their 41-run victory in the opening ODI. As a result, the West Indies can no longer win the series and will now be aiming to level it in the third and final match.West Indies captain Shai Hope had earlier won the toss and elected to bowl first under overcast conditions. However, steady rainfall arrived shortly before the scheduled start and never relented, leaving the ground staff with little opportunity to prepare the playing surface. After several inspections and hours of waiting, the umpires officially called off the match at around 6:30 PM local time. Only a handful of spectators remained in the stands by the time the abandonment was confirmed. The washout also denied fans the chance to see several notable team changes. Sri Lanka had handed a place to fast bowler Eshan Malinga following his impressive performances in franchise cricket, while the West Indies brought in Amir Jangoo as a replacement for the injured Matthew Forde.Sri Lanka entered the contest with momentum after securing a 41-run win in the series opener on Thursday. The victory was a significant one for the visitors, marking their first ODI win in the Caribbean in 13 years and also the first victory for newly appointed head coach Gary Kirsten since taking charge of the side. The abandoned fixture leaves the series delicately poised heading into the decider. Sri Lanka need only avoid defeat to clinch the series, while the West Indies must win the final ODI to salvage a draw. The third and final ODI will be played at Sabina Park on Monday, after which the teams will shift focus to a three-match T20I series followed by a two-match Test series. With valuable ICC ranking points and momentum on the line, both teams will be hoping for better weather conditions when they return to the field for the series finale.

Today in Boston Celtics history: K.C. Jones appointed as head coach
Today in Boston Celtics history, K.C. Jones was appointed as the head coach of the team with which he had won eight titles as a player. The Hall of Fame point guard alum then secured two additional championships with the Celtics as a coach in 1984 and 1986, and he was named head coach of the All-Star game on a total of four occasions.Jones achieved a regular-season record of 308 wins and 102 losses, along with a playoff record of 65 wins and 37 losses, resulting in winning percentages of .751 and .637, respectively. To the surprise of many, Jones resigned from his position as head coach following the 1987-88 NBA season. The role was then assumed by longtime Celtics assistant coach Jimmy Rodgers.”It’s something I wanted to do,” Jones would say of his resignation in an interview at his home with the Associated Press.Even on his exit from the team, Jones was a Celtics lifer, and he made sure to let the media know it. "I'm still with the Celtics,'' he made clear. ''It's a love affair with the Celtics." ''I'd been giving it consideration since last summer," he added. "It's good for me; it's good for the family; it's good for Jimmy (Rodgers)."He remained with the team one season further in the front office before leaving to join the Seattle Supersonics as an assistant coach. This article originally appeared on Celtics Wire: Celtics history: K.C. Ticket pain and Trump anger, but still room for ‘magic’: how readers feel about the World Cup
Argentina fans who watched their team win the World Cup four years ago are hoping for a repeat success this summer.Photograph: Tom Jenkins/The GuardianThe 2026 World Cup is nearly upon us. Across 39 days beginning Thursday, 104 matches will be played throughout the United States, Mexico and Canada until a champion is crowned 19 July in New Jersey.Amid the quadrennial excitement around the world’s biggest sporting event, there has also been intense controversy and scrutiny. Ticket prices, transport costs, climate threats and security concerns have left fans with mixed emotions. We asked readers around the world to share their feelings about the World Cup, whether they are preparing to attend the matches in person, follow from home or refuse to watch at all. These are some of the stories we received.Related: Power and glory: World Cup promises a spectacle impossible to ignoreI’m going, but I don’t feel great about any of itThere isn’t a ton of optimism about Canada’s chances – getting out of the group would be an accomplishment, albeit a very attainable one – but rooting for a competent underdog in these tournaments is rewarding in its own way. Plus, we have recently enjoyed some very intense international sport (ice hockey against the US, in the Four Nations Face-Off and then the Olympics), so there is a sense of togetherness in what is a very diverse city. Really it comes down to the novelty of the experience and bringing a global event “home”, if only for a few games. I’m attending Canada v Switzerland in Vancouver. I got tickets through a friend’s work and figured out affordable accommodation through family, otherwise I would not be attending. Resale and even face value prices are extortionate.I have been following stories about the World Cup, and as with all things related to football administration I am appalled. Greed is how things work in this world we’ve constructed for ourselves, and the manner in which Fifa has conducted itself in the last year – when measured against reported conduct in 2022 and the disdain that North American companies hold for consumers – shouldn’t be surprising. I will watch every game I can and I will attend my one Canada game, but I don’t feel great about any of it. Ian McCann, TorontoThe special brand of World Cup magicDespite all of the lackluster buildup, the World Cup has its own special brand of magic, whether you’re watching a heavyweight, a plucky minnow, or your own country. You never know when Turkey or South Korea might make it to the semi-finals, when James Rodríguez might come out of nowhere to score one of the best goals you’ve ever seen again Uruguay, when a French team might implode, or when you’ll be huddled at a table in a restaurant with your Argentinian stepmother watching on an iPhone as Argentina finally win on penalties and as the kitchen staff faintly explode in cheers behind you.I’ve tried [to buy tickets] but haven’t had any luck so far. I live about 45 minutes away from Foxborough, where a few of the games are being held. However, tickets hovering around high triple digits or low quadruple digits have put me off. I’ve been watching as those prices have steadily decreased recently so I’m hoping to still snag tickets to some games. Jose C, MassachusettsI live for football, but I fear Trump will ruin itI live for the World Cup. I can tell you where I was for finals going back to 2002. I’m excited to see what the national teams can do.We left the US four years ago. The travel cost, the unknown at US immigration. And plane fuel. We don’t want to get stuck in the US. Plus the tickets are insanely expensive. Who can afford those prices? You can get a better picture on TV.I have been watching closely since [Donald] Trump was re-elected. It doesn’t appear that anything is being done in preparation for these matches. I fear he is going to ruin football. The temperatures for this World Cup are going to be worse. Christy, 62, PortugalShocking, greedy – and yet, there’s still hopeI think I speak for a nation when I say the thought of Scotland being at the World Cup fills us with giddy excitement. I woke up on the morning of the 2014 edition with a face full of hives and Scotland hadn’t even qualified, so I dread to think what condition my skin will be in come the morning of our first game. It’s shocking, it’s abhorrent, it’s greedy, it’s entirely unsurprising. [Fifa president Gianni] Infantino is desperate to be popular and loved by powerful men. You’ve got to feel for Canada and Mexico, this being a supposed joint bid, only the US are being talked about and for all the wrong reasons, from ICE agents to dynamic pricing, there’s not a lot of positives. That being said, will I watch as many games as possible? Of course, Scott McTominay didn’t score that overhead kick for me not to get up at 2am, Kieran Tierney didn’t score a thunderbastard for me not to buy a Panini sticker book at almost 40 years old, and Kenny McLean didn’t score from his own half for me to forget the last 28 years of Scotland not qualifying so that we can have that most comforting and sickening feeling for a couple of weeks, hope. Fraser, 38, Clackmannanshire, Scotland$10,000 tickets? How times have changedI have a conditional ticket for the final which will only become valid if England get there. So, probably not.The photo is of me holding a 1986 World Cup final ticket. The cost of the quarter-final (England v Argentina), semi-final (Argentina v Belgium) and the final was $100. Less than the cost of getting a bus from New York to the MetLife Stadium 40 years later. How times have changed. Tony Mason, 60, LouthMissed opportunity for the US to do moreI’m hoping (despite the cave-in of excitement internationally for this tournament), there will still be guests from all over the world and I’ll have the chance to give directions around New York, tell them a little about local football culture, or just share a drink and a watch. I expect New York will still be a fun place to be this summer, and I’m making a chart of all the different neighborhoods my friends and I want to go watch a game in with international supporters in those neighborhoods – parts of Harlem near me are partial to Senegal, or where I work in Sunset Park I expect will be buzzing on Mexico matchdays.Years ago we imagined this as a chance to make lifelong memories nearly each day, to finally show that we have the smarts to put on a large-scale World Cup, to turn around the grim momentum of the stories behind the last two World Cups. Now it’s embarrassing to have hoped for any of it – this World Cup is like a bad insult comic trying to do crowd work, and bombing, and the United States soccer community are the comedian, and the crowd, and venue losing money on a garbage act, and the better comedian who didn’t get booked that night. Corruption has become a daily watchword in many aspects of life in this country and this tournament reflects that at so many levels, down to the way state-level corruption causes breakdowns in services and competition between localities for resources and favor. I got my tickets cheap and will enjoy what I’ve got, and I don’t intend to allow the degradation of the game or the tournament to stop me from playing host on a personal level – but I’ll rue this summer as a missed opportunity for our country to be and do more. Abhi Goyal, 34, New YorkI’m boycotting this World CupIt’s WAY too expensive, and the political aspect of it all looks bad.I played soccer my whole childhood. I attended and enjoyed the 2015 Women’s World Cup in Canada. I remember fondly the ’94 World Cup in the US – I didn’t attend, but remember how exciting it was to watch. I’m boycotting this one, even though I live in a host city. It seems like the only reason it exists is for the rich to party and to boost Trump’s ego, and I refuse to participate. Sarah, VancouverRelated: ‘I don’t want to give my money to Fifa’: Toronto turns its back on the World Cup‘The USA kind of sucks, but we will go there anyway’The current regime in the USA, ticket and travel prices, meant that our small group of friends on the World Cup tour has shrunk to two, but we have a third mate in Vancouver, which made New Zealand being drawn in Group G perfect. I am looking forward to spending time with two of my best friends; watching some amazing football live, at amazing stadiums in the right time zone – I don’t think people from larger territories understand the effort antipodean fans go to to watch live sport at big tournaments. Just watching the games on TV without losing sleep is going to be a massive luxury! This may be over-romanticizing things, but [I’m excited about] being part of a larger mass of fans getting together to enjoy the football. I have printed some stickers to share with the random fans I will be sitting with in the stands.I have been following lots of World Cup stories, from the ticket and hotel prices, to ICE issues, to what may happen to the Iran team, who New Zealand will be playing in our first match. Almost every story has worried me somewhat, and some of the gloss has been taken off the trip for me. Having said that, as JJ Bull says – “The USA kind of sucks, but we will go there anyway.” Campbell McGill, AucklandExcitement will take hold once games startI wish Fifa had followed the successful model of the 1994 World Cup – the last time the US hosted. Letting US Soccer and the host cities take the lead worked very well and many of the issues around the upcoming tournament were avoided. But I hope once the games start, the excitement of the world’s beautiful game will be the focus. The articles are correct, there is much to criticize. But the media are so often focused on the negative. I trust the matches will be exciting and the press will capture both the highs and lows of the tournament. Ambassador John Hennessey-Niland (Ret), director for government affairs at 1994 World Cup, USRooting for Messi, but hate to see him with TrumpI really hope Argentina can win again. We would love to celebrate our fourth star. But beyond football, I would also like Argentine players to be bolder about what they say off the field. I miss players like Maradona, Cantona or Ibrahimović, who were never afraid to speak their minds. I admire players like Mbappé or Lamine Yamal when they speak about immigration, condemn the far right or show solidarity with Palestine. Argentina has the best player in the world, but I hate seeing Messi smiling with Trump. I’d like to hear more voices speaking about social issues, inequality, workers, retirees and the situation many people are facing in the country. Hugo, ArgentinaFor a month, we can all dream[I’m hoping] to see Panama score against England, who somehow have become our rival (even though they don’t see it that way) at a World Cup stage. And note my choice of words, score. But still, it’s the World Cup and for a month we can all dream of a win.We tried, as in seriously tried [to get tickets]. But the price and political atmosphere was too much to bear.Fifa is betting on the loyalty of the fans, and losing. And it’s systemic, even to watch over the TV is going to be an expense, a serious one for many. At this point people are choosing which games to see over the TV because pricing has become crazy. It won’t be as massive as it was before. Alfredo, 43, PanamaRelated: ‘Excited but wary’: fans in the 16 host cities share their hopes and fears before the World CupZero interest in the actual gamesI’m an Arsenal fan since the 1970s. I have never been much interested in international football, but this year, watching Trump and Infantino vying to see how much money and prestige each could get from the finals has left me with zero interest in the actual games.I have read stories about the cost of tickets (including for players’ family members), the lack of affordable transportation to the games and the possibility that ICE will be out in force. What do I think about them? Disgust. Jo A, OregonChannelling the magic of the 2010 OlympicsI grew up watching soccer. My dad was an under-20 provincial champ and my grandfather played semi pro in Victoria in the 1930s. My husband and I are attending on 14 June. Australia v Turkey. So lucky. When we hosted the Olympics in 2010, it was magical.I truly hope that there are no issues and I am very relieved that ICE will not be in Vancouver. I feel for visitors going to matches in the US and my fingers are crossed that no one will be jailed, and/or deported. Shelley, VancouverA baptism by fire for my countryWhen Norway last qualified for the World Cup, I was 5 years old. So this World Cup will obviously be a new and potentially emotional experience for me (and many other Norwegians). I’ve been an avid World Cup (and Euros) watcher my entire life, and I’ve always had to cheer for a surrogate team (sometimes Sweden, sometimes Denmark, but most often Germany). Now I get to watch my own team play. Something I am looking forward to. We ended up in the so-called “group of death” with Senegal and France, which makes it all the more exciting. A baptism by fire, which might incidentally also become literal as well as figurative due to the hot temperatures of the American summer. The American stadiums also look quite strange, and I am interested in how they will look on the television. Maybe it will be great? I am not looking forward to the half-time show in the final, however. William, 32, Oslo

US show the fight Pochettino wanted – just in time for the World Cup
Felix Nmecha of Germany and Christian Pulisic of United States compete for the ball during Saturday’s friendly.aPhotograph: Jamie Squire/Getty ImagesA sunshower began dousing the fans at Soldier Field as Matt Freese picked the ball out of his net. It was only the second minute of the United States’ final friendly before the World Cup, and mighty Germany had already opened the scoring with plenty of talent to turn the occasion into a rout.On this occasion, however, “when it rains, it pours” did not befit the US performance. By the time the precipitation subsided after 10 minutes or so, Pochettino’s starters stepped into the sunlight, determined to not be embarrassed by the four-time world champions. The hosts seldom looked over-run despite trailing, setting the stage for Antonee Robinson to volley an emphatic equalizer past Hoffenheim’s Oliver Baumann in the 37th minute.“I was thinking that we were lucky [to face this scenario],” Pochettino said after Saturday’s 2-1 defeat, “To see how we react, how we show character, how we show [togetherness], how we start to play under pressure. In the moment, I was upset, of course, but after that, I think it’s lucky. I think it’s good for us to see the reaction of the team. The reaction was amazing, it was really positive.”Early in Pochettino’s tenure, and especially in 2025, the US often compounded mistakes after conceding and struggled to get back into contests. At the time, he leaned on the fire of players who were often on the outside of the national team before he was hired, especially Patrick Agyemang and Diego Luna. One wild-card pick that January, Matko Miljevic, was selected despite being a free agent due to a passion his coach chalked up to the midfielder’s development through Argentine soccer.None of that trio is on this squad, but much of the competitiveness that Pochettino craved yesteryear was on display against Senegal and Germany. And it’s not all huffing and puffing; the team’s press has functioned better in these friendlies than against Belgium and Portugal. And while it’s not like the US created a bounty of plum chances, a volume-shooting approach kept Germany from stationing too far upfield, keeping the game credibly balanced.“Sometimes when you get punched in the mouth, you gotta stand back up and punch back,” Tim Ream said afterwards. “All the guys stepped up, flying around [with] tackles, and really getting into the one-v-one duels. Just making life really, really difficult after conceding so early. It was a really, really encouraging response, for sure.”Ream lost his mark as Nico Schlotterbeck set a pick on the Charlotte defender, a sequence which Ream said is often cited as an area of emphasis for officials to monitor that still goes overlooked far too often. (“[Officials have] told us that if you get blocked and nudged, they’re going to be calling that, even if the guy’s not offside. Obviously, they don’t.”) Rather than dwell on the sequence too long, Ream played a crucial role in helping the team’s progression, working in combination with former Fulham teammate Robinson to get the ball upfield down the left flank. While Robinson’s audacious volley was the clear highlight of the team’s performance, the 28-year-old found some of the game’s more mundane moments to be just as encouraging.“We knew there were going to be tests, but trying to find a way to win a game is going to be crucial in the World Cup,” Robinson said. “[I’m] disappointed that we lost, but [there are] many positives to take. Conceding that early, we could have easily crumbled, and it could have been a very, very bad day to be going into the tournament.”The tune-up friendlies have provided Pochettino and his staff with a crucial 180-minute sample to study their tournament roster. There will be tough decisions to make, especially concerning which defenders give this team its most stable bedrock and how to calibrate a two-tiered midfield. There has also been a relative dearth of service provided up the central third of the pitch, though Sebastian Berhalter helped quite a bit with his line-breaking distribution in a half-hour shift off the bench.Still, the intangibles and togetherness were on full display even after Leroy Sané beat Freese for the match-winner. Early in second-half stoppage time, Tim Weah made a two-footed sliding tackle that, while avoiding a clattering with Waldemar Anton, came in with some power behind it. Schlotterbeck took offense and began to approach Weah with a couple of teammates in tow, only for several members of the US team (including starters who had since taken up seats on the bench) to rush to Weah’s defense.“The situation was good to have,” Pochettino said afterwards. “It’s because we care, [Germany] cares. We are competitive, they are competitive.”With a win against a reigning Afcon finalist and a one-goal defeat against a quadrennial World Cup contender, the US will now begin their World Cup in earnest at their training base in Irvine, California. These are the types of opponents with which the co-hosts must contend if they hope to actualize longtime aspirations of a deep tournament run on home soil. The result may not have been ideal, but the performance following an early conceded goal showed evidence of what the team believes is its most cohesive version that’s coming together just in time for the World Cup.“I mean, honestly, it feels like a family,” Christian Pulisic said. “I feel like the guys are really close. We’re always hanging out, doing things, and just hanging out as a group. I feel like no one’s really on the outskirts. It’s a really enjoyable group to be around, honestly. It feels great going into this tournament when you have the team with such good chemistry.”

Atlético Seasonal Ratings: Grading Alvarez, Griezmann and the attackers
BARCELONA, SPAIN - APRIL 8: Alexander Sorloth of Atletico Madrid celebrates 0-2 with Alex Baena of Atletico Madrid, Robin Le Normand of Atletico Madrid, Julian Alavarez of Atletico Madrid, Antoine Griezmann of Atletico Madrid during the UEFA Champions League match between FC Barcelona v Atletico Madrid at the Camp Nou on April 8, 2026 in Barcelona Spain (Photo by David Ramirez/Soccrates/Getty Images) | Getty Images One of the defining stories of Atlético Madrid’s 2025/26 season has to be the weight carried by its attackers, a group asked to compensate for a midfield ravaged by injury, to navigate a winter transfer window that brought as much upheaval as reinforcement and to deliver in a Champions League semi-final while still processing a Copa del Rey final defeat. They did so with mixed results. Julián Alvarez dazzled in Europe and went quiet in the league for three months. Alexander Sørloth scored freely and started nothing that mattered. Antoine Griezmann said goodbye the only way he knows how, with goals, drama and a lump in the throat. And Ademola Lookman arrived in February and immediately looked like the best signing of the season. In the third instalment of Into the Calderón’s seasonal player ratings, we turn our attention to the forwards. It is a long list, and a complicated one, including three players who were only part of the squad for part of the season, a club legend on his way out and a mixed bag of form from big names.Julián AlvarezAlvarez and Sørloth finished as Atlético’s joint-top scorers across all competitions with 20 goals each, which sounds impressive until you examine how Alvarez got there. The numbers tell one story; the context tells another. In La Liga, Alvarez managed just eight goals in 29 appearances, a significant drop from the 17 he scored in 37 league games last season. The low headline figure in the league is partly explained by a staggering mid-season collapse: a 14-game La Liga drought without scoring, stretching from November through to late February. What kept his overall tally respectable was the Champions League, where he scored 10 goals in 15 appearances, a return that confirmed his place among the best in Europe in the big games, when he was focused on the task at hand. When Atlético needed him most on the biggest stage, he delivered. But the elephant in the room, of course, is his future. Barcelona’s machinery has been relentlessly pulling at him throughout the second half of the season, and the contract renewal that Atlético hoped to formalise has stalled. Losing him would hurt badly, but after a La Liga campaign that sometimes raised more questions than it answered, he has — perhaps inadvertently — put a price on himself. Where 12 months ago he wasn’t up for sale, if you asked many fans, those same supporters may now reluctantly put a price on a player who scored eight domestic goals at a club finishing fourth. Rating: 7/10Alexander SørlothIn terms of raw output, Sørloth had an excellent season. He finished as Atlético’s top scorer in LaLiga with 13 goals in 35 appearances, operating at nearly a goal every other game when given the chance. His non-penalty xG numbers were elite, placing him in the top two percentile of all La Liga strikers, and a hat-trick in the Champions League to seal progression to the last 16 was among the highlights of the entire European campaign. And yet the conversation around Sørloth this season was always the same: why wasn’t he starting the big games? Diego Simeone consistently dropped him when the match really mattered, using him as the battering ram off the bench while Alvarez and Griezmann occupied the more prestigious slots in the XI — as shown by the fact that he only started one Champions League knockout tie, against Club Brugges in the second leg. That kind of deployment reflects how Simeone sees him: a finisher of high quality who lacks the all-round profile to lead the line in a match where Atlético cannot afford to concede space on the counter. While his stats are strong, they are boosted by being the man to feature against Atleti’s weaker opposition. At 30, Sørloth’s value is as a specialist. He delivered when asked. But this was not the campaign of a first-choice striker.Rating: 6.5/10Antoine GriezmannHis last season at the club where he became a legend was one where many expected him to play a bit-part role, but Griezmann perhaps exceeded expectations as he finished with nine goals and four assists across 42 appearances in all competitions, taking on a reduced but meaningful role. The numbers this season don’t reflect his true value, which was never purely statistical at this stage of his career. Griezmann was the player who kept things calm when they might have unravelled, who stretched defences when Atlético most needed width, who pressed when work rate was needed, who brought levity to a dressing room navigating constant injury chaos. His move to Orlando City in MLS has been confirmed, and talk of a potential mid-season exit right as the team competed to reach the latter stages of the Copa del Rey and Champions League left a mark that reminded many of his talks with Barcelona on the eve of Champions League elimination to Juventus in 2019.More than anyone else in this squad, he will be difficult to replace: not because of goals or assists, but because of what he represents and his leadership role.Rating: 7.5/10Ademola LookmanIn some ways, Lookman is the most difficult player on this list to rate fairly, because a half-season window simply isn’t enough canvas. Nine goals and four assists in 22 appearances since his February arrival from Atalanta represents an extraordinary return for a mid-season signing. A goal involvement every 104 minutes is better than Diego Costa managed in his January 2018 return. He scored on his debut in a 5-0 demolition of Real Betis in the Copa del Rey, and proceeded to become the most electric attacking presence Atlético have had in years, scoring an equaliser in the eventual Copa del Rey final before an injury picked up there ruled him out until the Champions League semi-final home leg against Arsenal. He wasn’t sharp in either leg, and he was unable to prevent Atleti’s elimination.Lookman’s debut half-season was one of promise and potential, and finding consistency could be what takes him to the next level. With a full season under Simeone, the ceiling is very high. Based on what we saw in three months, this rating could look conservative come May 2027.Rating: 8/10Giuliano SimeoneThis season, Giuliano did more than enough to put some distance between himself and the narrative of being the coach’s son, but he didn’t quite kick on as much as some would have liked. An energetic start to the season, cementing his place as the first choice right-winger, faded as his incredible amount of minutes seemed to take their toll later on.He made 31 LaLiga appearances, scoring four goals and registering six assists, and was one of only a handful of Atlético players to remain consistently available — and useful — throughout the campaign. Simeone senior deployed him as his most-used outfield player alongside Koke, Marcos Llorente and Dávid Hancko, a fact that surprised many observers who expected a lesser role.In truth, it shouldn’t have surprised anyone who watched him closely. Giuliano’s energy, pressing and willingness to cover the entire right flank made him an invaluable piece of the shape, both as a winger and as something closer to a hybrid wing-back when El Cholo’s structure demanded it.He is not a 15-goal-a-season player, and probably will never be. But the way Giuliano reads the game, links play and sacrifices himself defensively makes him exactly the type of footballer that survives and thrives in this system. His best years are ahead of him.Rating: 7/10Álex BaenaHaving arrived as one of the most exciting summer signings in recent years, Baena’s debut season turned out to be a significant disappointment. Baena joined from Villarreal in a long-gestating €42 million transfer, off the back of a season where he created more chances than any other player in La Liga. The expectation was that he would do for Atlético what he had done for Villarreal: provide creativity from wide positions, pile up key passes through sheer volume and unlock stubborn defenses that have stymied Atleti away in La Liga for years. Baena started brightly against Espanyol before an injury and appendicitis then sidelined him and interrupted his adaptation. Since, he’s tried to fit into a system that hasn’t quite suited him. He finished with just two goals and three assists in 27 LaLiga appearances, a fraction of the numbers he put up on the yellow side of Spain. Injuries disrupted his rhythm in the first half of the campaign, and by the time he was fit, the team’s dynamic had shifted around other players, although he found some better form in the final weeks of the campaign. The talent is clearly there. Baena led Villarreal’s attack almost singlehandedly for two seasons, and that ability does not disappear. A good World Cup could propel him to new heights, and another summer could help him to adjust to the demands of being a winger in Simeone’s system.Rating: 5/10Giacomo RaspadoriAtlético signed Raspadori as an insurance policy, seemingly to add depth with a gamble in a reasonable piece of business given Griezmann’s age and Alvarez’s early-season form. But insurance is, by definition, something you hope not to need. And when Simeone reached for Raspadori in his hour of need, he found a player who looked like a round peg in a square hole. The Italy striker played 15 games, scored two goals and provided three assists before leaving in January, making just one La Liga start in his entire time at the club. Simeone had long wanted a strong dribbling winger on the left, and a clever, diminutive playmaker seemed a poor fit. That said, the numbers weren’t so bad given his limited minutesThat said, the club bought someone who didn’t fit and the manager rarely played him. While Raspadori worked hard and never complained publicly, his January exit back to Serie A to join Atalanta was probably best for all parties.Rating: 5/10Thiago AlmadaIf Baena and Raspadori were disappointing summer signings, Almada’s was truly catastrophic. The Argentine started the first three games of the season but did not start another league match until a three-game run in late January and February. In between, he missed time through injury and accumulated a series of anonymous substitute appearances that left even his most optimistic observers struggling to see where he fits. He flirted with a January exit that never materialised, and he failed to back up any claim for more game time. Conceding a penalty foolishly losing possession in his own box against Elche was a moment that no player wants on his highlights reel.Almada ended what is likely to be his only season in Spain with three goals and one assist in 27 La Liga appearances, averaging just under 49 minutes per game. His dribbling numbers suggest a player with genuine technical quality but his impact, or lack of it, on matches suggests a player who has not yet understood what La Liga demands of him physically and positionally. In fairness, Simeone has been patient, but patience has limits.Rating: 4/10Carlos MartínThe briefest of cameos against Eintracht Frankfurt in September for a product of the academy system who trained with the first team and was in the squad for the first 17 league games without playing a minute. Carlos Martín never was close to establishing himself in Simeone’s plans; 65 of the 66 minutes he played were against Atlético Baleares in a topsy-turvy Copa del Rey match in December. He left for Rayo Vallecano on loan in January and is expected to join the Conference League runners-up permanently.Rating: 3/10

De’Aaron Fox From the Bench? 1 Specific Stat Shows Dylan Harper Can Contribute More With More Minutes
De’Aaron Fox recently spoke about sacrificing aspects of his own game to help the San Antonio Spurs reach their current level. Perhaps he can sacrifice even more, allowing coach Mitch Johnson to give Dylan Harper a larger role. The Spurs are down 0-2 in the NBA Finals against the New York Knicks after costly mistakes in Game 2. They lost 105-104 despite four of their five starters scoring in double figures. Only Julian Champagnie failed to reach double figures, as he was limited to eight points.Harper provided a strong contribution off the bench, finishing with 15 points, six rebounds, and three assists. He also recorded a steal and delivered several highlight-reel plays.NBA reporter Evan Sidery shared a specific statistic from the Spurs’ losses and suggested that it was time for Johnson to make a change. However, the player he believes should be removed from the starting lineup is not Champagnie, but Fox.The Spurs are outscoring the Knicks by 15.3 points per 100 possessions when Dylan Harper shares the court with Victor Wembanyama.Needing to win three of the next four to force a Game 7 in the NBA Finals, it’s time to bench De’Aaron Fox in favor of Wembanyama’s long-term option. pic.twitter.com/KdUTbLAuts— Evan Sidery (@esidery) June 6, 2026Fox is a guard while Champagnie is a forward.Dylan Harper of De’Aaron FoxFox recorded 20 points in the Game 2 loss. He scored 9 points in the first quarter which was two more points than his total output in Game 1.However, they were still not enough. Some critics and reporters think Harper should be inserted into the starting five. He thinks they should take a cue from the time when Gregg Popovich decided to make team legend Manu Ginobili a part of the first five after being off the bench in his first eight years with the team.He also thinks Harper can do better on defense against Jalen Brunson compared to the two-time All-Star.“As smaller, All-Star guards go, Fox is a reasonably effective defender. But “reasonably effective” still translates to vulnerable against Brunson,” Sam Quinn of CBS Sports argued.Jun 5, 2026; San Antonio, Texas, USA; San Antonio Spurs guard Devin Vassell (24) and guard Stephon Castle (5) and guard De’aaron Fox (4) and forward Victor Wembanyama (1) and guard Dylan Harper (2) walk back on the court in the fourth quarter during game two of the 2026 NBA Finals at Frost Bank Center. Mandatory Credit: Scott Wachter-Imagn Images“Julian Champagnie turned into Brunson’s preferred target, and Fox held up reasonably well when Brunson found him. But Harper guarded Brunson across 14.4 partial possessions, according to NBA.com tracking data, and the most frequent feature of those possessions was New York trying to screen Harper off of him.”Harper made a good account of himself as a starter in Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals with the Oklahoma City Thunder. It was Fox whom he replaced.

2026 World Cup Group I preview, predictions
For France to get back to the World Cup final for the third successive tournament, the path will be difficult, starting with a loaded Group J that features one of the world's best strikers and some of the biggest names in the sport. But there might be a positive to the draw for manager Didier Deschamps, who will be leading the team for the final time after 14 years in charge. Getting tested in the group stage should allow the team to find its right formula for the knockout round.France's first challenge will come in the opener against Senegal, a squad that will be full of players recognizable to any fan of European soccer. Former Liverpool standout Sadio Mane will be the leader of the front line. Senegal won the African Cup on the field this winter but the title was later stripped because the team left the field after a penalty was awarded to Morocco. This biggest challenge literally and figuratively could come from Norway and striker Erling Haaland of Manchester City. The 6-foot-5 striker is a devastating combination of size, speed and physicality. He has scored 55 times in 49 international appearances. Martin Odegaard, the captain of Arsenal, will be a crucial creative piece to the offense that is one of the best in the tournament. Rounding out the group is Iraq, which last appeared in the World Cup in 1986. Here is a breakdown of Group I. World Cup Group I teamsFranceWant to know how good the France attack is? Next to Kylian Mbappe, one of the world's biggest stars, is Ousmane Dembele, the reigning Ballon d'Or winner who has led Paris Saint-Germain to consecutive Champions League titles. There's also Michael Olise starting on the right wing, who had 15 goals and 19 assists for Bayern Munch, and reserve option Rayan Cherki of Manchester City, who finished second in the Premier League with 12 assists. But what will decide France's fate is the defense anchored by Arsenal center back William Saliba. If the back line and goalkeeper Mike Maignan are on their game, another trip to the final could be in offing.Key players: Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele, William Saliba.IraqIt's a daunting task for Iraq to get out of a group with three teams potentially capable of making deep runs in the tournament. How do they manage to find a path? The formula of manager Graham Arnold in the team's playoff win against Bolivia worked well — stay solid on defense and be opportunistic when chances come. Arnold joined the team late in its qualification run and brings experience from having led Australia to the round of 16 in 2022. Most of the squad plays domestically, but there is experience abroad sprinkled among the group. Aymen Hussein and Mohanad Ali lead the forward line and have been prolific scorers for the national team.Key players: Amir Al Ammari, Ali Al Hamadi, Aymen Hussein.NorwayBack in the World Cup for the first time since 1998, this generation of Norwegian players gives hope for a deep run. Haaland is going to draw attention as one of the world's top goal-scorers after winning his third Golden Boot in four Premier League seasons with Manchester City. Norway also has other striker options in Alexander Sorloth of Atletico Madrid and Jorgen Strand Larsen of Crystal Palace. The play of Odegaard will be crucial. The midfielder has struggled in the past two seasons with Arsenal. He brings needed creativity to help find Haaland in the right places. Defense is where Norway could be susceptible to attacks coming from France and Senegal. They'll rely on Brentford center back Kristoffer Ajer to hold an experienced group together.Key players: Erling Haaland, Martin Odegaard, Kristoffer Ajer.SenegalMane, who had a remarkable Liverpool career before moving to Saudi Arabia, is the biggest name of the group. On defense, veteran Kalidou Koulibaly leads the back line with Eduoard Mendy, who was the keeper for Chelsea when it won the Champions League in 2021. Joining Mane in the attack are Everton winger Iliman Ndiaye and Crystal Palace midfielder Ismaila Sarr with a strong group of bench options. The biggest question is whether this team can play with cohesion rather than exist as a group that that relies on individual quality.Key players: Sadio Mane, Iliman Ndiaye, Kalidou Koulibaly.World Cup Group I scheduleTuesday, June 16, 3 p.m. (Fox): France vs. Senegal, MetLife Stadium (East Rutherford, N.J.)Tuesday, June 16, 6 p.m. (Fox): Iraq vs. Norway, Gillette Stadium (Foxborough, Mass.)Monday, June 22, 5 p.m. (Fox): France vs. Iraq, Lincoln Financial Field (Philadelphia)Monday, June 22, 8 p.m. (Fox): Norway vs. Senegal, MetLife Stadium (East Rutherford, N.J.)Friday, June 26, 3 p.m. (Fox): France vs. Norway, Gillette Stadium (Foxborough, Mass.)Friday, June 26, 3 p.m. (FS1): Iraq vs. Senegal, BMO Field (Toronto)World Cup Group I predictionPredicted order of finish:FranceNorwaySenegalIraqThis article originally appeared on USA TODAY: 2026 World Cup Group I: Preview, predictions, schedule

The Curacao blueprint and how Guyana are targeting a similar World Cup miracle
Curacao, the tiny Caribbean outpost with a population less than Middlesbrough, have found their way to football’s top table. Away from the greed, the cost and the wars, their anticipated debut has been one of the sparingly few pre-tournament stories that epitomise what the World Cup should represent. It is a national miracle that they find themselves here but also a regional rarity; they are one of just five nations to ever represent the Caribbean on football’s biggest stage. That now looks to be changing. The expansion of the World Cup to 48 teams has created new opportunity for international minnows to compete at a level that once looked impossible to reach. Those at the top may feel Fifa have made the tournament too big for their own good, diluting the quality. But there’s an argument for the opposite; with new doors now opened, smaller footballing nations are crucially now seeing a greater justification to invest in the development of the game from the ground up. One of the confederations that benefited most from the expansion was Concacaf, the governing body for North America, Central America and the Caribbean. Like in Asia and Africa, Concacaf saw its World Cup qualifying berths effectively doubled - from three to six, plus another if one of their nations is successful in the play-offs. This is understood to have more than drawn the ire of Europe, with Uefa’s three extra spots (taking their allocation from 13 to 16) being the same given to Concacaf despite the overwhelming gulf in depth and standards between the confederations. Quality was clearly not the prevailing reason for change - instead, “inclusive” was the key word used by Fifa president Gianni Infantino when explaining the new allotments, who for all his warranted critics has a support base in the smaller nations.Gianni Infantino says the World Cup is now more “inclusive” as a 48-team tournament (Reuters)For better or worse of the World Cup on the whole, this has allowed the Caribbean to dream. Previously, pathways to the World Cup were gatekept by North and Central America. The United States and Mexico were near-guaranteed to qualify, leaving just one place to fight over; often Costa Rica or more recently Canada would snatch this. Opportunity was unbelievably limited for ambitious but poorly-resourced teams, but that is no longer the case. Both Curacao and Haiti are competing this year - the first time the Caribbean has ever had two countries representing at a World Cup - two decades on from Trinidad & Tobago’s generation-defining qualification in ‘06. And there will be others in years to come, with this writer delving into how one nation aims to emulate Curacao.Guyana’s storyGuyana is part of this flourishing Caribbean football dream. Situated on continental South America, bordering Brazil to the south between Venezuela and Suriname, it is culturally and politically Caribbean, and its national side thus plays qualifying through Concacaf. But they are not a strong footballing nation.Going into this World Cup, they are ranked 150th in the world; 17th in Concacaf’s rankings. They have reached the finals of just one Gold Cup, their confederation’s major competition, in their history in 2019.Guyana are not a strong footballing nation (AFP/Getty)What makes them different to every other Caribbean minnow though is the country’s economic state. Guyana boasts the fastest growing economy in the world, driven by the historic discovery of an enormous offshore oil reserve - estimated at 11bn barrels - in 2015. Prior to that find, the nation had a lower Human Development Index rating than Palestine and was one of the poorest countries on the planet. It is now the 17th most oil-rich in the world with social development slowly rising, though recent data did show that 58 percent of Guyana’s 840,000-population is still living in poverty.Nevertheless, Guyana now has financial power that can theoretically allow for the right investment into football to an extent their counterparts cannot afford. If the government, with Irfaan Ali currently serving as president, will facilitate this is a completely different question. The country is also blessed with a large overseas diaspora in football-proficient countries, especially in Europe and the United States. This is integral to for a small international team to be successful. Curacao have demonstrated this. Only one player in their 26-man squad was not born in the Netherlands. That man was Manchester United youth product, now Sheffield United winger Tahith Chong, who moved to the Netherlands at the age of eight and represented the country at six different youth levels.Curacao’s journey to the World Cup has been powered by their Dutch diaspora (AFP/Getty)This blueprint is there to be adopted for the Guyana Football Federation (GFF).The need for ‘foreigners’A previous GFF regime in the early 2010s, ran by Christopher Matthias, controversially opposed the utilisation of “foreigners”. He phased out the likes of Carl and Leon Cort, the English-born brothers who were - and still are - among a select class of Guyana internationals with Premier League experience. “Advancement is not necessarily development,” Matthias argued on live television. That changed when the incumbent Wayne Forde’s presidency began in 2015. Matthias, having grown vastly unpopular, had been unceremoniously ousted from power by Fifa a year earlier, just 18 months after being elected; his stand was short-lived. “Anyone who builds a campaign on being anti-diaspora players is going to suffer the consequences of that campaign,” Forde told The Independent. The GFF’s stance on overseas talent has been all but unwavering since. “No one is going to criticise a doctor who was born in England but decides to come home and cure patient here in Guyana,” Forde asserted. “I often call on that logic when I get into these arguments, and I say, ‘Listen man, these people are Guyanese’. If we had a war and Venezuela was coming in and we made a call across the diaspora and said, ‘We need 20,000 more soldiers’, you wouldn’t say, ‘We don’t want those that weren’t born in Guyana’. They’ll fight and die right next to us.”Recruitment relied heavily on word of mouth during the early Forde years.Neil Danns will be known to you as a Football League journeyman, best remembered for his time at the heart of Crystal Palace’s midfield between 2007 and 2011. The Liverpudlian is also one of the best players to ever don the Guyana shirt. He scored all three of the Golden Jaguars’ goals from midfield in their only Gold Cup appearance, earning a place in the competition’s team of the group stage despite Guyana’s bottom-place finish. Yet his introduction into the setup wasn’t carefully formulated by the GFF - it happened by fluke. Neil Danns in action against the United States during Guyana’s only Gold Cup campaign in 2019 (Getty)“When I was at Colchester United, a lad came on trial with us who was at the same agency as me,” said Danns. “He didn’t end up signing for Colchester but we kept in touch and he ended up playing for Guyana first. He remembered I was of Guyanese descent, so he got in touch with me and he basically said, ‘Would you be interested?’ And I said, ‘Yeah, definitely, I’d love to.’” That initial moment of complete chance prompted Danns to make “one of the best decisions in my football career”.Over a decade on, this still forms part of the GFF’s recruitment strategy, especially with the reach of social media. “The biggest recruitment happens when a player talks to another about exploring international football and that other player having the desire to play international football. That is the core of recruitment,” said GFF technical director Bryan Joseph. But there is more being done. “We have people that are within those countries that are actively recruiting players,” Joseph added. “We are just on the verge of confirming a group that will do some recruiting in England for us. We also have a group in the United States that is doing that, especially with younger players.” That last note is integral. Danns joined the setup when he was 32. The Cort brothers made their debut at 32 and 34 respectively. To avoid Guyana being seen as an end-of-career pursuit, there became a need to get to approach and recruit eligible overseas talents while they were still young. There is an obvious target for the GFF in this regard. Danns’ son, Jayden, plays for Liverpool and looks destined for a fantastic professional career. He would surely become the best player in the country’s history and could spearhead their rise. But as someone who captained the England U20s as recently as last September, his first-choice international avenue is abundantly clear.Liverpool striker Jayden Danns, Neil’s son, is eligible to play for Guyana (Getty)“We’ve never actually spoke about it,” Danns Sr replied when asked about his son following in his footsteps. “That’s the honest truth. He knows what I’ve done for Guyana but he’s got a completely different career to me.” He adds that it’s “not something you could ever rule out” and the young striker would be eligible to change allegiances as he has no senior appearances for the Three Lions yet. For now, he’s well out of reach of the GFF.Instead, Nathan Moriah-Welsh and Isiah Jones, two Londoners, are obvious recruitment success stories. Jones was called up aged 25 in August 2024, having become a regular during a six-year stint at Middlesbrough; no player in Guyana’s first team had established themselves at a higher level. Moriah-Welsh, meanwhile, joined the setup as a teenager in March 2021. It was quite the call from the then-Bournemouth prospect; he was rated highly enough to be included in The Guardian’s “Next Generation 2018” list at 16, which put him alongside Bukayo Saka as one of the 20 best young talents at Premier League clubs, so wouldn’t have been blamed for thinking he stood a chance at one day fighting for an England place.Nathan Moriah-Welsh joined the Guyana setup as a teenager despite being a highly-rated English-born youth star (Getty)“It was just a case of being realistic and understanding that England’s the best of the best,” the now-Mansfield midfielder admitted, who was eligible for Guyana through his mum. “As much as I was probably one of the best of the best at Bournemouth for my age, there’s still 19 other Premier League teams. You can weigh up your options and now I’m about to hit 30 caps for Guyana instead of waiting for an England call-up that would’ve never came.” Moriah-Welsh doesn’t regret his early decision, and like Danns, urged others presented with a similar opportunity to jump at it: “The experiences you get are next to none.” It’s testimonies like these that perhaps explain why it’s not solely Guyana looking for new players. The opposite can be true. “We are on a daily basis receiving numerous requests for players who pitch to come and play for Guyana,” revealed Joseph, the profiles of which form a key database for the GFF. But Guyana will not take just anyone, because a complete reliance on overseas talent will not be accepted. While foreign recruitment is imperative to lay the foundations of a successful minnow, the federation’s vision is to also build the game and develop stars within the country’s borders.Guyana will not accept a complete reliance of overseas talent (Getty)‘The opportunity to outspend everyone’Attitudes towards overseas talent may have shifted in the past decade, but there has always been strong fan discontent to a perceived “lack of confidence” in Guyana’s own. This has been a regular cause of division between governors and supporters. So it isn’t much of a surprise that officials are stressing the growth of the grassroots game as paramount. Football outreach appears to be the obvious first step. Too few in the country, especially deep in the hinterlands, have any real access to the game, and this has been difficult to change. There are very few coaches available and other institutions, such as schools, have been reluctant to make football readily available for youngsters. “A lot of the burden around grassroots football is still being carried out by the national federation,” lamented Joseph. The GFF recently launched the Youth Ensemble Programme directed at boys and girls, with the aid of Fifa Forward funding, which is said to have got close to 4,500 children playing football across over 100 clubs every weekend. Only two percent of the playing population will ever reach the heights of the national team but by exposing more to the game, the quality of this minority will improve.Bearing the torch for the homegrown movement is wonderkid Omari Glasgow, born in the coastal village of Beterverwagting, who became the country’s all-time top scorer aged just 20 in 2024. A professional with MLS side Chicago Fire, Glasgow’s connection with the Guyana fanbase is much stronger than any of the overseas contingent. The hope is that there will be many more Glasgows to come.Omari Glasgow bears the torch for Guyana’s homegrown movement (Getty)Glasgow plays for MLS side Chicago Fire (Getty)And it’s not just the men’s game being focussed on; the federation’s commitment to developing women’s football really stands out. In fact, when this grassroots revolution begun three years ago, the first youth tournament the GFF launched an under-15 girls competition. They’ve since introduced a 10-team women’s league.Guyana international Annalisa Vincent, who had “no option” but to play with the boys growing up because, back then, there was “no structure” to grassroots football, notes that “there’s been a lot of progress” - but still wants to see more done. “There is only one yearly competition that is being played for women and that’s not enough.”It’s infrastructure that remains the bottleneck in Guyana’s progression. In Guyana, there is currently just one astroturf pitch at the National Training Centre, opened in 2019. This is detrimental to grassroots football for one reason: the wet season. “Once the rain start falling, football essentially comes to a stop because all we have is natural grass community pitches,” Forde said. While there are plans for new all-weather playing fields, there is a belief among top officials that investment into Guyanese football is not keeping up with its “rapid rate” of expansion, despite the country’s obvious economic edge. “We have the opportunity - I don’t like saying this - to outspend everyone,” Forde contended, whose federation still sees 85 percent of its funding come from Fifa. “I don’t know why this is not happening the way it ought to be happening.”There are projects, crucially financed by commercial deals, that are coming along. Most notably, Guyana is finally getting a purpose-built national team stadium, the Blue Water Shipping Stadium, in its capital of Georgetown, which is on the verge of issuing the tender for its first phase of work. Delivering a “home of football” for the country is Forde’s legacy project.Design of the Blue Water Shipping Stadium set to be built in Georgetown (Guyana Football Federation)The setup has also stepped up its game as a brand; Guyana’s kit deal with Meyba in 2024 finally allowed their overseas diasporas to buy and rep their jersey, such as rapper Central Cee, who showed off the yellow number to his millions of followers soon after it went on sale.Thomas Dooley, who was Guyana national team manager at the time of interviewing, fascinatingly showed he had quite the football business brain on him. Beyond just his German-style possession-based tactics, influenced by his 10-plus years as a Bundesliga stalwart, he stressed the importance of sponsors and looked to implement his own changes in a bid to attract them. It could be as simple as making sure his players were all wearing coordinating uniforms on duty. “You need to be recognised when you go outside,” he said.Dooley also spoke candidly on the need to bring football to younger age groups - for him, it was telling that “you have kids who are 17 years old and can’t touch a ball” - while heavily advocating the inclusion of quality players from overseas. “If the first team has a little cough, the youth team dies, so you have to make them the best,” he said. “They have to bring in the money, they have to bring the attraction.”Thomas Dooley brought impressive experience to the Guyana dugout (Getty)But it was after our interview that Dooley made his most telling statement. He resigned from his job.The minnow ‘lottery’Dooley’s exit, ending his tenure at nine months, was abrupt. He had been lured away by another opportunity. “It was heartbreaking to see Coach Dooley leave us, prematurely as he did,” Forde said. “He didn’t try to hide ... I had to be fair with him. I said to him, ‘As a coach, I would love to have you here, but I know we can't compete with some of the offers that you're getting.’”This twist of fate underscored the fragility that comes with being a smaller national setup. Dooley, a former assistant to Jurgen Klinsmann in the USA national team setup, was highly regarded by his players and injected a European discipline into Guyana that counter-acted, as Moriah-Welsh described, the “Caribbean thing” of poor organisation. Dick Advocaat did the same with Curacao.Dooley’s injection of European discipline drew parallels to Dick Advocaat at Curacao (Reuters)The GFF was seen to be punching up with Dooley; now it’s back to the drawing board and to the uncertainty of the managerial market. “It is really and truly a lottery,” Joseph recognised. “Just ask Chelsea.”Danns, who now manages National League North side Southport, had vastly contrasting experiences with different Guyana managers he worked under. He had nothing but praise for fan favourite Jamaal Shabazz, who has spent four different stints in charge of the Golden Jaguars, but described one the Trinidadian’s successors as “way off it”, labelling him “an opportunist that got in the job”. Ill-fated appointments are part and parcel in football but at this level, with so few proven options available, smaller nations are often left with no option but to chance it.‘Set the home in order’As the GFF looks to minimise turmoil in the dugout, the upper brass are also faced with the long-standing challenge of tightening off-pitch operations. GFF general secretary Pushpargha Chattopadhay last year stepped into a role that had been clouded by his predecessor’s sins, with Ian Alves hit with a five-year ban from all football-related activities by Fifa at the beginning of May for sexually harassing female staff members. It’s an ugly association for the federation. “Most organisations, their first instinct would be to keep this quiet and we felt that this would send the wrong signal because these things need to not happen,” Forde said, defending the GFF’s handling of the situation. “Once you make a decision to behave badly and it comes to our attention, and we can prove it through proper and appropriate investigations, you will be held accountable.”But in the GFF’s bid to turn a new leaf, Chattopadhay has been fighting an uphill battle to win public support from the moment of his appointment. His body of work in India, another country without much footballing pedigree, drew the ire of critics who felt this experience did not justify overlooking Guyanese alternatives. There were also questions surrounding Fifa’s advisory role in the appointment and whether the GFF were being politically influenced by outside interests. Chattopadhay refuted this: “(The GFF is) absolutely independent. Fifa don’t impose themselves and we don’t let anyone impose themselves on us.”Shutting out the outside noise, Chattopadhay’s goal is clear: “set the home in order”. Having branded the state of football administration upon his arrival as “nascent and raw”, he is out to clean things up.The GFF’s reputation is still hurt by historic financial controversies. Forde declared that, during his presidency, he has “been able to take away that narrative of people stealing the money and converting the resources to their own benefit”, akin to the corruption scandal that engulfed Trinidad and Tobago and the entirety of Caribbean football in 2011. But a scandal surrounding unpaid wages to players in 2024 means that questions of transparency continue to linger within public discourse.Leon Cort, who played in an era when “acts of impropriety ... dogged the organisation”, still maintains he has “reservations” over whether those behind the scenes nowadays “know what they’re doing fully” when it comes to spending any newfound wealth wisely. The federation fights accusations of a lack of transparency and accountability by publishing their annual audits on their website. “There are no secrets, only sensitive information - that has to be protected, as is the case with every organisation,” insists Chattopadhay. For his part, Chattopadhay is said to have “re-established trust in the working environment” post-Alves. Now comes the task of winning the trust of the masses, which will not be achieved through politics. All this talk of progression needs to be translated into results. The dream of a World Cup miracleIn Guyana’s current state, you can’t predict if or when those results will come. They are not foreseeable. But they weren’t foreseeable for Curacao either.Curacao’s rise rules out the concept of impossibility in Caribbean football (Getty)In 2014, Curacao were ranked 21st in the Concacaf rankings; lower than where Guyana are now. Nobody dreamed of them qualifying for a World Cup. Their achievement rules out the concept of impossibility in Caribbean football, and from speaking to players and key figures, past and present, there is actually belief that the Golden Jaguars can pull off a similar rise in years or decades to come. “Guyana has the pedigree. We have the raw talent,” Forde affirmed. “ I believe the first time that we break into the World Cup at either the senior women's or men’s level, we're going to stay there stay there.” This brash optimism in itself is incredible given how little joy the country has had with the sport in its history. It’s a feeling that is captivating an entire region - Guyana are not alone in feeling that football’s grandest stage is no longer completely out of their reach. Money could be their trump card, but others will be developing their own. Now, Forde heads to Mexico City for the World Cup opening ceremony. He is bracing for mix of emotions to boil up when he sees Curacao’s colours: “A little bit of envy, a little bit of excitement.” The feeling will be collective among a smattering of footballing chiefs inside the Azteca. They all believe their minnow can be the next World Cup miracle.

1 dead and 5 wounded in shootings near the West Bank, Israel’s rescue services say
Israeli security forces are deployed at the scene of a shooting attack carried out by a Palestinian citizen of Israel near Tzur Yitzhak in central Israel, Sunday, June 7, 2026. (AP Photo/Ariel Schalit)2026-06-07T08:38:08Z TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — Assailants launched several shooting attacks close to the Israeli-occupied West Bank on Sunday, killing at least one person and wounding five others, according to Israel’s rescue services. Israel’s police said they had killed one attacker. Large cohorts of Israeli soldiers carried out searches in the area, on the ground and by air, for additional assailants. The number of places where people were shot initially raised concerns that there could be multiple, coordinated attackers. Rescue services Magen David Adom said it received the first reports of a shooting at a gas station near the town of Kokhav Yair, located on the Israeli side of the boundary with the West Bank, at around 10:30 a.m. Several other shooting reports were received soon afterward, in the towns of Tsur Natan, Tsur Yitzhak, and close to the Israeli settlement of Sal’it, located inside the West Bank. Police identified the attacker as a Palestinian citizen of Israel from the nearby Arab town of Taybeh.Residents in the area were instructed to stay at home and children were kept in lockdown at school, according to the regional council head. “Since Oct. 7, the scenario we were expecting was terrorist crossing into our towns from over the boundary, I don’t think that anyone imagined that we would discover the attackers were Israeli citizens,” Oshrit Gani Gonen, the regional council head for the area that includes the towns where the shootings took place, told Israeli media. ___This story has been corrected to include the right location where the Israeli man was killed. That shooting took place on the Israeli side of the boundary with the Israel-occupied West Bank, not inside the West Bank 获取更多RSS:https://feedx.net https://feedx.site

Health workers at the epicenter of Congo’s Ebola outbreak labor with little pay or rest
Richard Lokudu, center, the medical director of Mongbwalu General Hospital, speaks with UN peacekeepers in Mongbwalu, Congo, Friday, June 5, 2026. (AP Photo/Moses Sawasawa)2026-06-07T07:17:02Z MONGBWALU, Congo (AP) — Dr. Richard Lokudu, the medical director of Mongbwalu General Referral Hospital, has received barely any compensation for his work on the front line of one of Congo’s deadliest Ebola virus outbreaks.Lokudu and several of his colleagues work all day at the hospital treating an influx of patients. Notifications of suspected cases come even late at night.“I have not received my allowance (and) what happened to others could happen to me as well,” Lokudu told The Associated Press. “Despite all the infection prevention and control measures we are implementing, we do not know what may happen.”Health authorities believe the outbreak, which took the eastern region of Congo by surprise after spreading silently for weeks without detection, started in the bustling mining area of Mongbwalu in Ituri province. Mining conditions conducive to virus spreadMongbwalu has emerged as the epicenter of the rare Bundibugyo type. The town attracts large numbers of laborers who work in large gold mines with muddy pools of gold deposits, narrow pits and caves. They live in low-income areas including crowded camps and have little access to proper health protocols. The conditions increase the possibility of transmitting the disease, which spreads through close contact with bodily fluids of the sick and deceased such as sweat, blood, feces and vomit. There also has been widespread skepticism regarding the disease, making the job of medical treatment more difficult for Lokudu and his colleagues, while some of the health workers and first responders have died from the disease. “It is one thing to be far away and hear statistics being reported, but what is happening on the ground is enormous,” Lokudu said. “People are sacrificing their rest and comfort for this cause. There should be recognition that they deserve compensation. These workers should receive their salaries regularly.”The Congolese government did not respond to a request for comment from the AP. Read More Minimal resources availableCongolese authorities have confirmed 452 cases including 82 deaths. On Thursday, the Central African nation recorded 71 new cases in a day, which authorities said is a sign of “active community transmission.”The rare Bundibugyo type has no approved vaccines or treatment, so health workers have been targeting symptoms. The government said at least five people have recovered from Ebola since the outbreak was officially confirmed by Congo’s Ministry of Health on May 15.The disease “had a big head start,” according to World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. Hospitals in the region could not test for the right type of Ebola that had begun spreading several weeks before confirmation. Health workers are handling the disease with minimal resources as agencies have been scrambling to bring aid into the region. Masks, gloves, boots and medications were initially all in short supply.“There has been an erosion of the health system,” said Heather Kerr, country director for the International Rescue Committee in Congo. “There has not been investment in the health system, and this has been going on for years.” Sign up for Morning Wire: Our flagship newsletter breaks down the biggest headlines of the day. Tough conditions for health workers“During the first week, we did not even have time to go home and eat. The second week was the same. We only eat once a day, what amounts to breakfast in the evening,” said Alice Bamuhinga, a nurse at the Mongbwalu hospital.Even with widespread skepticism and disregard for health protocols, many in the town are becoming aware of the outbreak’s grave reality.Asero Jeanne had five children. Two died from the disease within two weeks. When her daughter became ill, the family thought it was malaria and neighbors advised them to avoid the hospital, saying “anyone who went there would die immediately,” according to Jeanne, 52. The daughter died after three weeks of moving between hospitals and home, followed by a son who died days after. Then Jeanne became sick.“I saw about 20 people die,” Jeanne said. “I watched them being taken to the morgue, yet God is allowing me to leave here alive. I thank the doctors.” World Health Organization offers a planTedros, the WHO director-general, on Friday launched a $518 million plan to combat the outbreak, saying “containing Ebola depends on political commitment, sustained financing, and the trust and engagement of communities.”Efforts to contain the disease also have been hindered by the conflict between the government and Rwanda-backed M23 rebel group, in addition to attacks by Islamist militants. For health workers on the front line of Congo’s Ebola outbreak, the work has become harder as the disease spreads faster than their current treatment capacity.“Despite the alerts we receive and the teams we have on site, we lack the means to travel into the field,” Lokudu said. “As a result, there are alerts we are unable to investigate.”___Adetayo reported from Lagos, Nigeria. UK’s Starmer hosts Zelenskyy, Macron and Merz to discuss support for Ukraine

(AP Photo/Evgeniy Maloletka)2026-06-07T09:30:17Z LONDON (AP) — British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will host Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Sunday to discuss ongoing support for Ukraine. The U.K., France and Germany, the so-called E3 group of European nations, have been prominent backers of Ukraine following Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. The U.K. and France lead the “coalition of the willing” initiative to provide security guarantees for Ukraine as part of a peace process. The meeting on Sunday evening comes in the wake of a large-scale Ukrainian drone attack that targeted Saint Petersburg, Russia’s second-largest city, underscoring Kyiv’s growing ability to hit deep inside Russia. Gov. Alexander Beglov said three people sustained minor injuries in Saturday’s attack, during which residents were advised to stay indoors. With the front line barely moving as swarms of drones hinder advances, both sides have sought an edge by launching long-range strikes. The war that followed Russia’s invasion of its neighbor is more than four years old, with no end in sight. The St. Petersburg attack, which came less than 24 hours after the end of the city’s flagship economic forum, was an embarrassing blow to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s efforts to cast the conflict as a distant event that doesn’t affect Russian daily life. Read More Putin on Friday rejected Zelenskyy’s offer for a meeting, saying he sees “no point” in it. Meanwhile, a Russian attack Sunday killed three people and wounded one as they were waiting for a bus in Balabyne in Ukraine’s southern Zaporizhzhia region, the head of the regional military administration, Ivan Fedorov, wrote on his Telegram channel. ___Follow the AP’s coverage of the war in Ukraine at https://apnews.com/hub/russia-ukraine
