State can’t complete comeback, swept in super regional
ATHENS, Georgia — For every punch Mississippi State threw, Georgia threw one more.Mississippi State Pitching ASRMississippi State's pitching could not keep Georgia at bay for the second straight day.State could not stave off elimination on Sunday afternoon, falling to Georgia 11-9 in 10 innings in Game 2 of the Athens Super Regional. The win completes a series sweep for Georgia (51-12), and sends it to the College World Series for the first time since 2008.“We're not going to walk out of here feeling good about the end and that we accomplished something,” State coach Brian O’Connor said. “We go to work every day to be in a position to win a national championship. That didn't happen this year, and we'll get right back to work.”Much like Game 1, Sunday’s affair was a roller-coaster slugfest. This one was tied at nine after nine, requiring extra innings.Tre Phelps reached on an error by Ace Reese at third to lead off the top of the 10th, then Daniel Jackson drove him in on a two-run blast to left field. It was Georgia’s fourth home run of the game.In the bottom half, walks by Bryce Chance and Noah Sullivan brought Jacob Parker to bat as the winning run. The freshman hit two homers earlier in the game.Facing a 1-2 count, Parker chased high heat from Justin Byrd, ending the game, the series, and Mississippi State’s season.“I know he hurts because the game ends with his at bat,” O’Connor said of Parker. “But we wouldn't be where we're at without him and his teammates' contributions.”Mississippi State hit 4 for 18 with runners on base on Sunday compared to Georgia’s 5 for 23.Between Games 1 and 2, Mississippi State went 13 innings without getting a hit with runners in scoring position. They were 4 for 23 with runners in scoring position throughout the series.Mississippi State (43-19) trailed by five after the top of the fifth. Starter Ryan McPherson went just 1⅓ innings, which prompted O’Connor to use Duke Stone in long relief, but even he had trouble putting up zeroes.Georgia scored at least one run in each of the first five innings. The leadoff hitter reached base in each of those frames.“We couldn't figure out, pitching wise, what to do to get them out,” O’Connor said. “Today was more of a story of free passes, and then them getting hits or home runs, and giving them a little bit of momentum. Not to take anything away from them, but we just had too many walks today to win this ball game.”Mississippi State walked eight batters and hit one to go with two errors.MSU suddenly found life in the sixth. A home run by Vytas Valincius and an RBI single by Chance each brought home a run. Georgia hit yet another solo dinger in the top of the seventh, but in the bottom half, Reese, Sullivan and Parker hit three-straight solo shots to make it a one-run ballgame. With two outs and one on in the bottom of the eighth, Parker blasted his second round-tripper of the game, which gave State its first lead of the day.Georgia countered right back in the top of the ninth on a one-out, one-run single by Brennan Hudson that beat the shift on the right side of the infield. MSU could not respond.Mississippi State ended the year 39-3 against non-top 10 teams and 4-16 against top 10 teams. They never won a series against a top 10 team.“It's been a whirlwind, when you take over a job like this and you have to put all the pieces together to build a roster," O'Connor said. "And I think we built a pretty darn good roster that could compete with anybody in America, and we just fell a little bit short.”Reese led State with three hits while Parker led with three runs batted in. The freshman hit five home runs in MSU’s five postseason games.“It was just such a fun group, such a fun year,” Parker said. “There were so many fun moments, and I can't wait to do that again next year with a new group, and create more memories.”

Blue Jays' Ernie Clement made 'gentlemanly' move, confused umpires and Orioles
Blue Jays' Ernie Clement made 'gentlemanly' move, confused umpires and Orioles originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.It looked a simple enough play, a ground ball that was going to set up a double play. But as Baltimore Orioles shortstop Gunnar Henderson fielded the ball and went to tag Toronto Blue Jays runner Ernie Clement, the oncoming Clement veered toward the outfield, away from the tag.Henderson fired to first base for an out, and the Orioles assumed Clement would get called out for leaving the baseline. The umpires instead let Clement stay at second base. The crew chief even called Clement "gentlemanly" for his maneuver after the game.First, here's a look:Crew chief Hunter Wendelstedt on Ernie Clement establishing wide base path on potential double play ball, via @afkostka:"It was actually a very gentlemanly thing to do … getting out of the way to allow the fielder to make the play to first base."pic.twitter.com/gbXIZF51WX— Underdog MLB (@UnderdogMLB) June 7, 2026MORE: Chad Dallas honors late father in dream-like MLB debutThe key to a runner being in the baseline is that the runner himself establishes the path. And the path can't officially be established until the fielder has the ball. The umpires essentially ruled that Clement had already started to veer wide before Henderson got the ball. That's a bang-bang timeline if you watch the play back.Clement likely had the idea, but the actual execution of it wasn't super early. To say it's "gentlemanly" is odd, because Clement clearly wasn't just avoiding a throw -- he was trying to avoid a tag.Whether he did it early enough to actually establish a basepath over there is the only thing up for interpretation. The Orioles probably aren't going to all of a sudden agree that Clement was just being chivalrous here.More MLB news:Bo Bichette reveals his plans for his opt-out clauseBumpus Jones is trending for an 1892 accomplishmentThe last time a team was this bad at walking, it took 9 balls to earn a walkOutfielder retires from baseball to go play college footballGuardians pitcher trying to complete incredible comeback

Clemson WR Tristan Smith thanks fans ahead of court hearing
Clemson wide receiver Tristan Smith is set for an important step in his push to play another season with the Tigers.Smith posted Sunday that his court date is set for Monday, thanking the Clemson family for its continued support and prayers. The message drew plenty of reaction from fans, with several replying with well wishes as Smith continues his legal fight against the NCAA over his eligibility.Smith filed a lawsuit against the NCAA earlier this year after his waiver request for another season was denied. The case centers on Smith’s argument that the NCAA has applied its waiver system inconsistently when it comes to players with junior college experience. His legal team has argued that the decision has cost him the chance to continue his college career, along with potential NIL and revenue-sharing opportunities. He played his first season at the FBS level with the Tigers after previously playing at Southeast Missouri. In his first year at Clemson, Smith caught 24 passes for 239 yards and one touchdown. Before arriving in the ACC, he totaled 76 catches for 934 yards and six touchdowns at Southeast Missouri.Court is tomorrow! Thankyou Clemson family for your continued support and prayers. Thankyou God and Go Tigers❤️.— Tristan Smith (@DbkTristan) June 7, 2026Smith's return would give the Tigers another experienced receiver in the room, but the bigger story is his fight for the chance to finish his college career on the field.Strider Watch: Former Clemson ace helps Braves beat Pirates📸 Sam Navarro, Sam Navarro-Imagn Images https://t.co/mIekH2LJBGpic.twitter.com/8inPN9HdIZ— Clemson Wire (@Clemson_Wire) June 7, 2026The outcome is now in the hands of the legal process. Ogwumike and Hamby have double-doubles to help Sparks beat Fire 89-72
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Nneka Ogwumike had 20 points and a season-high 17 rebounds, Dearica Hamby added 22 points and 12 rebounds and the Los Angeles Sparks beat the Portland Fire 89-72 on Sunday to snap their three-game losing streak. Ogwumike had her third consecutive double-double and fifth this season. Kelsey Plum finished with 16 points, seven assists, five rebounds and three steals for the Sparks (5-6). Rae Burrell added 10 points. Megan Gustafson had 16 points and a season-high 12 rebounds, her first double-double since 2023, for the Fire (6-7). Carla Leite and Emily Engstler added 10 points apiece. Portland committed nine — which included six steals by LA — of its 15 turnovers and was 5-of-14 shooting as it was outscored 23-12 in the third, the Fire's lowest-scoring quarter this season. Plum had nine points and two assists, while Hamby scored seven in the period to help the Sparks take a 64-55 lead into the fourth. The Fire tied a season low with three 3-pointers and shot a season-worst 10.7% (3 of 28) from behind the arc. Louisville Kings advance to UFL title game with win over St. Louis
The Louisville Kings are headed to the United Football League's championship game. The Kings pushed their winning streak to five in a row Sunday with a 29-20 victory over the St. Louis Battlehawks inside the The Dome at America's Center. Up next for Chris Redman's team: Round 3 against the reigning champions, the DC Defenders, on their home turf. Kickoff for the United Bowl is set for 3 p.m. Saturday, June 13, at Audi Field in the nation's capital. Here are two takeaways from Sunday's win: Chris Redman's game-changing super challenge Redman made one of the best calls of his short head-coaching career around the nine-minute mark of the fourth quarter and the Kings clinging to a 25-20 lead. Battlehawks quarterback Luis Perez had just completed a pass to tight end Sal Cannella for a gain of 21 yards down to Louisville's 14-yard line. The hosts had momentum and were looking to capitalize on it with a go-ahead score. But Redman used his super challenge — a UFL original that allows coaches to get an official review on a call they believe was missed. In this instance, Redman thought St. Louis tackle Richard Gouraige was holding all-league outside linebacker Cam Gill as he was trying to take down Perez. After another look, officials agreed. Instead of having the ball first and 10 on the Kings' 14-yard line, the Battlehawks faced first down and 20 at Louisville's 45. That changed everything. Well beyond the sticks, St. Louis' offense stalled. It was not in field goal range and turned the ball over on downs instead. Five plays later, Kings kicker Tanner Brown knocked down his second four-point field goal of the evening. The Kings' defense withstood a monster workload The Battlehawks had 75 offensive snaps to the Kings' 42. Louisville's defense was on the field for 40:02 and gave up four trips to the red zone. And yet, coordinator Jamie Sharper's unit surrendered only 20 points — only three of which came during the second half. That's impressive, especially considering the Kings didn't force a takeaway until the final minute of regulation. This story will be updated.Reach Louisville men's basketball reporter Brooks Holton at bholton@gannett.com and follow him on X at @brooksHolton.This article originally appeared on Louisville Courier Journal: Louisville Kings beat St. Louis Battlehawks, will play in United Bowl

Hull edged out as Korda secures first US Women's Open title
England's Charley Hull suffered more major heartbreak as world number one Nelly Korda claimed her first US Women's Open title.Hull moved to the top of the leaderboard early in the final round at the Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles, but finished one shot behind Korda on seven under par – her fifth runner-up spot in major championships.Mexico's Gaby Lopez finished alongside Hull in second, with South Korea duo In Gee Chun and Sei Young Kim a shot further back.Hull, who was seven strokes off the pace at halfway, started the day three shots off the lead but got off to a lightning start with an eagle three at the first hole. She added two more birdies before dropping a shot at the ninth, with back-to-back birdies to start the back nine putting her back in pole position.Dropped shots on the 12th and 14th derailed her momentum but a birdie at the 17th after getting up and down from a greenside bunker moved her back into a share of the lead.Unable to hole her chip from behind the 18th green for a closing gain, Hull holed the return putt to set the clubhouse pace and equalled the lowest round of the day with a 67.Behind her in the closing group, Korda had nine straight pars before she birdied the par-five 17th to edge one stroke ahead.Korda had a scare as her short par putt to clinch the title rolled around the lip of the hole before dropping to secure her fourth major title with a closing 69.It followed her success in the Chevron Championship in April, meaning she holds the first two major crowns of the season.

Victor Wembanyama’s Candid Admission Highlights Exhausting Defensive Test Against Knicks’ Dangerous Shooting Attack Ahead of Game 3
The New York Knicks have been a major problem for Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals. In the first two games of the series, the Knicks have exploited the Spurs’ impressive defense. In the first three series that San Antonio played in, the team established a dominant force on the defensive end. However, their tactics have not worked against New York. The Spurs have primarily used Wembanyama as a zone defender inside the paint. With his height, length and reach, he scares opposing teams from using the driving lane to generate easy points. Against the Knicks, however, the NBA star has become more active in following their outside shooters, removing himself from the paint.Ahead of Game 3, Victor Wembanyama was asked about the challenge that the Spurs have encountered in facing the Knicks. Since he’s been everywhere on both ends of the floor, he hasn’t had a chance to take a breather when he’s on the court. However, he shrugged it off and is focused on finishing the task at hand.“The challenge (has) been mostly about will, the will to do it, and I feel like I’ll take a breather at the end of the season,” Wembanyama said."The challenge been mostly about will, the will to do it, and I feel like I'll take a breather at the end of the season."Victor Wembanyama on taking a breather and the challenge of defending the Knicks 🗣️(via @NBA)pic.twitter.com/L8kykYS3xP— ClutchPoints (@ClutchPoints) June 8, 2026Wembanyama has done everything he can to carry the Spurs to victory. Over the past two games, he has averaged 27.5 points, 10.5 rebounds and 3.5 blocks. Despite being down, though, he remains focused on their mission to overcome a 2-0 deficit.“This is everything that I wished for,” he said. “There’s really no reason to overthink it. This is what I’m built for.”Wembanyama and the Spurs had some crucial mistakes in Game 2. However, they don’t want to live in the past and are willing to learn and move past it.“It felt like we did a lot of things wrong, but we were also relentless and kept pushing,” he said. “I know it’s not wasted because our lessons are learned. I know we’re not going to make the mistakes of the past again.”Game 3 will be at Madison Square Garden on Monday.

Scottie Scheffler admits what was unusual about his game at the Memorial after ‘frustrating’ tournament
Photo by Mike Mulholland/Getty ImagesScottie Scheffler has opened up on what frustrated him most about his week at the Memorial Tournament after registering his worst finish at Muirfield Village since his very first appearance. Scheffler had a turbulent week at the latest signature event on the PGA Tour. It looked entirely possible that the world number one may even miss the cut after stumbling out of the blocks. It was surprising to see given that Scheffler had won the Memorial in both 2024 and 2025. But it is also fair to say that the 29-year-old has not been at his very best for much of the season.Nevertheless, it was jarring to see just how angry Scheffler was getting, particularly after he found the water on the 16th hole on Thursday.Scottie Scheffler reacts to his performance at the Memorial TournamentThe early signs suggested that things may not improve for Scheffler on Friday. He was three over par for the day through 10 holes. But just when it appeared that he may be about to miss the cut, he started to get his act together.Scheffler was eight under par for the remainder of the tournament. So perhaps it makes sense that he had mixed feelings when asked to sum up his week.“Overall, I would say pretty frustrating, but the way I played the last two days I definitely feel a lot better with kind of where things are at than I did coming off the course on Friday. I guess I should say in the middle of the round Friday,” he said.Photo by Ian Johnson/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images“I started hitting some good shots on the back nine Friday, and then I played decent the last couple days. I just wasn’t sharp enough to make the big move that I needed to make.”He was then asked what frustrated him most about his performance at Muirfield Village.“Just couldn’t really get anything going. It felt like when I was getting something going, like, yesterday was a good example, I made kind of a silly, not a silly, but I had a hard two-putt on 11. Three-putt and then I go to the next hole and I hit the shot in the back bunker, and then you just kind of know you have no chance from back there. Just little stuff like that. Then hit it in the hazard on 14 yesterday,” he said.“Just little things, little mistakes that I don’t typically make, I felt like I was making this week. So a few things to clean up in the off week, but overall, I feel pretty comfortable with where my game’s at.”What Scottie Scheffler learned after a practice round at Shinnecock ahead of the US OpenScheffler has been nowhere near his best this season. And yet, he has still not finished outside the top 25 once on the PGA Tour in 2026.He has to be considered one of the big favourites to win the US Open at Shinnecock later this month. Of course, it is the one major that Scheffler is yet to win.Shinnecock promises to be a brutal test. And Scheffler was asked what he learned about the venue after recently visiting for a practice round.“I would say definitely off the tee and some of the approach shots too. It’s one of those courses where there’s a ton of space out there, but the areas you have to hit into are quite small. So looking at like tee balls where some of them are somewhat blind and you’re kind of hitting over that like higher fescue type grass,” he said.“Then going into some of the greens, the greens are going to play really small, especially if they get firm and it should be really challenging week.It is easy to forget just how long it took for Scheffler’s 2025 season to kick into top gear.He has not been quite the same player so far in 2026. However, that does not mean that Scheffler cannot still enjoy a phenomenal end to the season.

St. Joseph girls flag football downs Gibraltar Carlson for 2nd title
St. Joseph's dominance in the Michigan Girls High School Flag Football League starts at the youth level.St. Joseph's youth league now has 102 girls, enough for all-girls teams and divisions. When Lainie Dorow started playing in fifth grade, she was the only girl on her team. Then she was one of four. Now, dozens of younger girls hope to one day lead a team to a state title – or even back-to-back championships, like she did Sunday, June 7.Dorow went 18-for-32 passing for 223 yards, three touchdowns, two 2-point conversions and one interception. She also returned an interception 33 yards for a score on defense to help the Bears beat Gibraltar Carlson, 28-12 and repeat as state champions at Ford Field.THE FIRST TITLE: St. Joseph Bears crowned inaugural Michigan Girls High School flag football champions"We've got girls at 5, 6 and 7 years old learning how to play quarterback, run routes and defend passes," said coach Matt Koch, who also directs the St. Joe Rocket and Flag Football program. "So our program doesn't start in ninth grade. Really, it starts in kindergarten in some cases, and we're not from a big area. It's been great seeing the kind of role models our girls have been for younger girls who try to emulate them. Girls in Berrien County love football and the opportunity to play."The No. 1-seeded Bears (7-0) drew a first-round bye in the second annual tournament hosted by the Detroit Lions, beat Wyandotte Roosevelt in the quarterfinals and Goodrich in the semifinals, then wasted no time taking control against the Marauders (7-1).Dorow tossed a 29-yard TD pass to Lauer Wright three minutes in. On the next possession, she found Wright again for a 1-yard score. Then Dorow returned a pick-six off Carlson quarterback Lauren Dunwoody, pushing the lead to 20-0 with 4:30 left before halftime."My teammates were just going up and getting the ball," Dorow said. "I trust that even if there are defenders on them they'll come down with the ball for me."However, Carlson made things interesting.Juju Atcheson caught a 37-yard TD pass down the far sideline to cut the deficit to 12 before halftime. Then Dunwoody led a methodical opening drive in the second half, setting up Blake Zachary's 4-yard TD catch to make it a one-score game. But Dorow answered with a 3-yard TD pass to Meghan Postelli. The Bears' defense later came up with a fourth-down stop at the 27-yard line and forced a punt to seal the victory."Lainie is a consummate leader and one of the most selfless people I've ever met, but don't take her kindness for weakness," Koch said. "She's the most competitive person I've seen. At the end of that first half, she got a little angry [that Carlson scored]. And when she plays angry, watch out. The sky is the limit for her."Dorow's teammates certainly weren't complaining about her competitive edge.Postelli finished with seven catches for 71 yards. Wright added four catches for 45 yards. Sophia Pierangeli had two catches for 28 yards and a 2-point conversion. Ella Zmrhal also caught a 2-point conversion, while Maisy Gable rushed four times for 45 yards."I've been coaching Lainie since the fifth grade, so the magic starts with her arm," Koch said. "From there, she's just been a student of the game. She'll text me route concepts at 10 p.m. sometimes, and we talk ball all the time. She's a spectacular young lady with a huge future."Dunwoody finished 13-for-27 for 143 yards for Carlson. Atcheson caught five passes for 78 yards, Josi Farago had three catches for 29 yards, Zachary had three catches for 33 yards and Jillian Farago added three catches for 34 yards. Addison Burgei recorded an interception on defense.Winning back-to-back state championships wasn't given for the Bears. Nelly Korda picks up historic U.S. Women's Open win by mere inches at Riviera to further bolster legacy
Nelly Korda picked up her fourth career major championship win on Sunday at Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles. (Brenton Tse/ISI Photos/ISI Photos via Getty Images)Brenton Tse/ISI Photos via Getty ImagesLOS ANGELES — Standing over her final putt on the 18th green on Sunday afternoon, knowing what was just moments ahead, Nelly Korda wasn’t happy with herself.“Why did I leave myself such a long putt?” she thought.Thankfully, it was just barely close enough. But only by about an inch. Korda snuck in a wild putt from less than 3 feet away through the back door on the final hole at Riviera Country Club to save her par, and the win, at the U.S. Women’s Open. Her face, jaw completely wide open, said it all.“I wish I had my WHOOP like [showing] my heart rate, because it was definitely high,” she said.Nelly Korda’s historic winKorda’s week didn’t start off well at all. After having to change shoes early on in the opening round, Korda posted a 2-over 73 and looked out of it. Her swing wasn’t going well almost out of nowhere, so she decided to do the unthinkable on Thursday night with her sister by her side on the range. She changed her grip in the middle of a major championship. “The worst. It was honestly the worst … My sister was like, ‘I barely could sleep. I literally told you to change your grip during a major championship,’” Korda said.“It is so uncomfortable. I think it’s the hardest thing in the game of golf is to change your grip because you’re always like, I was fiddling with it so much.”Remarkably, that worked. Korda carded back-to-back 67s over the next two days to play her way into the final group. She then rattled off nine straight pars on Sunday before finally ending the streak and breaking away from the rest of the pack with a huge up-and-down birdie on the 17th. That, Korda said, was one of the best putts of her career and “is the reason why I’m here.” Then came the final putt at the 18th, and the rest was history.“I had a lot of emotions kind of swirling in my stomach,” Korda said. “I would say it’s just a dream come true. I have dreamt about this moment since I was a little girl.”The win was Korda’s second major championship victory of the season, and the fourth of her career. The 27-year-old is now the youngest American to win four major titles since Mickey Wright did so in 1960, and the first American to do it at all since Meg Mallon did in 2004. Korda has won 19 times now in total in her LPGA Tour career, four of which have come already this season. In the four events she didn’t win, Korda finished in second in three of them. Her worst start was only a T8 finish. It’s been nothing short of dominant, similar to runs that Tiger Woods or Scottie Scheffler have pulled out on the PGA Tour. With her win earlier this season at The Chevron Championship, Korda is now the first to win the opening two majors of a season since Inbee Park in 2013. Korda is also just a win away from securing the career grand slam. With both the Evian Championship and the Women’s British Open still ahead, Korda has two chances to pull that off before the end of the season. If she can win them both, she’d be just the second golfer in LPGA Tour history to complete the Super Career Grand Slam, as there are five majors in women’s golf. With one of those, and Korda would be the first since Park to win four of the five. Now, it is still a little early to be talking legacy wins for Korda, especially just moments after what is perhaps the biggest victory of her career. But with that now behind her, what happens the rest of the season doesn’t matter much on that front, nor is it something Korda is focused on. She’s just happy to be in the mix, and to finally have the U.S. Open win in hand.“I’ve never really thought about the legacy of my career, if I’m being completely honest,” Korda said. “I just really love competing and being in this position of sometimes having a big lead going into Sunday or being tied for the lead and having to absolutely grind it out … It’s honestly just a dream come true sitting next to this trophy.”

Red Sox All-Star's Days In Boston 'Expected' To Be Numbered
Boston Red Sox hatThe Boston Red Sox's struggles continued on Sunday afternoon as the club dropped its series finale against the New York Yankees, 6-1. Now, the Red Sox are 27-36 on the season and in last place in the American League East. Things unfortunately, haven't taken a turn for the better yet and that could mean negative things for the franchise as we inch closer and closer to the 2026 Major League Baseball trade deadline in August. If the Red Sox keep stacking up losses, the club is going to have to take a long look at the roster and see if there are guys on the club to trade away. For example, USA Today's Bob Nightengale wrote on Sunday that Boston is "expected" to cut ties with All-Star closer Aroldis Chapman if things keep how they have so far this season. Do you have a take to get off your chest? Do you want to engage in a growing Red Sox community? Comment on our content alongside staff and fans alike!"Boston Red Sox closer Aroldis Chapman is expected to join his eighth different team, and potentially be in the postseason with his sixth different team," Nightengale wrote. "He is the top reliever available on every contender’s target list, converting 28 consecutive saves dating back to last season, one shy of his career record."The idea makes a lot of sense because he would bring back a massive return, but hopefully, this doesn't end up happening. The Red Sox have time to turn things around, but can't wait much longer.More MLB: Red Sox-Corey Seager Blockbuster Proposal: Who Says No?

Yankees' Jazz Chisholm shatters all-time NYY record
Yankees' Jazz Chisholm shatters all-time NYY record originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.Jazz Chisholm Jr. now holds an all-time New York Yankees franchise record.Would you have guessed that? Well, now you've got a cool bit of trivia. The mark is this: Chisholm is the fastest player in the history of the Yankees franchise to reach 50-plus home runs and 50-plus stolen bases with the Yanks. It took Chisholm 237 games to reach these totals, according to NY Yankees Stats.Next closest was Rickey Henderson. He needed 280 games in a Yankees uniform to do it.Alfonso Soriano didn't reach the 50-50 totals until 301 games for the Yankees.Alex Rodriguez was also in the mix here, needing 325 games with the Yanks to do it.Clearly, it's a multi-faceted skillset. Plenty of the historic Yankees sluggers have reached 50 home runs in a New York uniform faster than Chisholm.MORE: A 'gentlemanly' baserunning move confused the umpires, and everyone elseThere've also been speedsters in the history of this franchise, although seemingly fewer of them. But believe it or not, no one has combined power and speed quite like Chisholm. He is an ambitious fella, claiming he wanted to go 50-50 just this year. But in totality, it's clear Chisholm has an athletically potent skillset. With this stat, and the accompanying record, Chisholm has proven that he brings a combination to pinstripes that few have ever had. Gut wrenching Memorial Tournament loss leaves Ryan Gerard drained
Ryan Gerard struggled to erase the pain etched on his sweat-soaked face after absorbing a gut-wrenching playoff defeat against J.T. Poston to finish the 2026 Memorial Tournament on June 7 at Muirfield Village Golf Course.More: J.T. Poston wins Memorial Tournament, replay from Sunday's roundThanks to storms forcing the suspension of the third round June 6 while he and Poston were on the sixth hole, the two ground through 31 holes plus two more in a playoff forced when each made clutch putts on the 18th green to end the fourth round. All of that, plus sweltering heat on a difficult course baked in sun, not to mention a tightly-packed leaderboard, made Gerard look like he’d just finished a double shift in a coal mine rather than 33 holes of a golf tournament. The putt for par that he missed from 5 feet, 9 inches on the second playoff hole, which led to Poston's win, made it even more draining.“Yeah, I’m tired,” Gerard said. “I think that's an obvious one. There’s a lot of stress out on this golf course. There's not a lot of golf shots that you can kind of breathe [easy]. There's a lot of water, a lot of tight shots, a lot of angles [and] a lot of dicey putts. It just kind of wears on you mentally.”The Memorial Tournament’s runner-up purse of $2.2 million should take some of the sting away from a gut-wrenching conclusion to an impressive tournament for Gerard, but money was the last thing on his mind after signing his card.An emotional turnaround in the last two holes of the fourth round was still fresh.Tied with Poston and three others at 11-under for the tournament starting the 17th, Gerard birdied with a long putt of 36 feet, 9 inches that pushed him into sole possession of the lead with one hole remaining. He turned to a large gallery and pumped his fist amid loud cheers.Suddenly, it was his tournament to lose, and Gerard looked poised to close it out. Poston had other ideas. He birdied the 18th, a par 4, leaving Gerard with a putt of 5 feet, 2 inches to make for par to force the playoff. He drained it, but Gerard's putting on the second playoff hole opened the door for Poston's win.“I didn’t think I had won the golf tournament [after the 17th hole],” Gerard said. “That was just a really big putt in the moment, and the emotion that kind of came out was like a day of grinding really, really hard and not really seeing anything long go in … and then that was kind of the one that kind of got the lid off the hole.”It was also Gerard's last celebration of the day, a final boost before an unforgiving course and Poston's consistency smashed a bid for the second PGA Tour win of Gerard's career. Gerard finished with an impressive 12-under 276, which he carded just one week after tying for 10th overall May 31 at the Charles Schwab Challenge.“Strategically, there's obviously things that you want to do, but at the end of the day, it's an execution test,” he said. “I know I didn't execute enough to get it done. I hit a lot of good golf shots. I hit a lot of good putts, but you shouldn't let it get to a playoff like that if you're hitting it as good as I did. So, we're going to go work on a couple things.”Dispatch reporter Brian Hedger can be reached at bhedger@dispatch.com and @BrianHedger.bsky.socialThis article originally appeared on The Columbus Dispatch: Memorial Tournament loss leaves Ryan Gerard feeling drained

'I wish': Gregg Popovich's melancholic reflection on not being Spurs HC in the 2026 NBA Finals
'I wish': Gregg Popovich's melancholic reflection on not being Spurs HC in the 2026 NBA Finals originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.2026 is starting to echo 1999. Technological woes brought about by Y2K have become parallel to AI, a previously elected US President is currently serving his second term in the White House, and the San Antonio Spurs are facing off against the New York Knicks in the NBA Finals. One thing is missing though. While there is a Brunson playing on the Knicks side of the court, Coach Gregg Popovich is no longer the head coach of the Spurs, lurking on the sidelines.Still, Popovich contributes to the Victor Wembanyama-led team's strategy, though he wishes he were on the sidelines as he was 27 years ago.Coach Popovich gets melancholic about not coaching in Spurs-Knicks NBA FinalsGoing down 2-0 in the NBA Finals is not an easy sight to experience. What makes that even worse? For Coach Gregg Popovich, it is that his heart and mind know it can still help Victor Wembanyama and Co. topple the Knicks, but his body no longer allows him to do so.See, Coach Pop had a stroke on November 2, 2024. Since then, he has stepped down as the head coach of the Spurs, handed the keys over to Coach Mitch Johnson, and moved over to become the President of Basketball Operations instead.Coach Popovich is still involved in the Spurs' schematics and rotations, but he obviously gives Coach Johnson a lot of leeway to run different schemes. When the former Spurs head honcho was asked by Antonio Daniels about not being able to coach Wembanyama against the Knicks, Coach Pop had a deeply reflective answer, via Game Over."We watched the game tonight in Pop's suite with him. I asked him tonight ‘Do you miss it?’ And he said, ‘You have no idea how much. I wish I were down there right now. So you best believe when this game's over, Pop is not going home and going to sleep. There are conversations to be had about adjustments that he sees upstairs," Daniels declared.Coach Popovich is not just a former Spurs head coach. He is the living heart and mind of the organization. The Spurs won the title 27 years ago over the Knicks when he finally pushed David Robinson into title contention, and Tim Duncan rose to the occasion against Patrick Ewing. Coach Pop continued that dominance when he trained Tony Parker, Bruce Bowen, Manu Ginobili, Danny Green, Tiago Splitter, Boris Diaw, Matt Bonner, Kawhi Leonard, and many more great players. This got the Spurs a whopping five NBA championships. He now will likely have his last set of students in Wembanyama, De'Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle, Carter Bryant, Keldon Johnson, Devin Vassell, and Dylan Harper. So, being involved as much as he can despite the stroke and hardships that come along will be important.1999 was a big year because the Spurs triumphed against a fairly loaded Knicks roster. This time around, for 2026, there will be changes in the NBA Finals, but no one, not even impediments due to a stroke, can take the heart of Coach Popovich away from the Spurs. Make no mistake, the Spurs mastermind still has his fingerprints all over this series. If you see Horns Flare, 4-Out 1-In, Hammer, or Motion Strong in action, just know that it was Coach Popovich who perfected those schemes to get Wembanyama's Spurs where they are. It's all because 'Por Vida' does not just stand as a battle cry; it's a mantra tailored after Coach Pop, who has given his heart, soul, and mind to the Spurs for 38 years now.More Spurs News:Gregg Popovich drops NBA Finals words of wisdom as Spurs go down 2-0 to KnicksManu Ginobili reveals Tim Duncan and David Robinson's impact on Victor WembanyamaKnicks urged to come at 'flustered' Victor Wembanyama's head after blurry excuse

Spokane Indians pounded 14-0 in series finale against Hillsboro | NWL baseball
Jun. 7—A strong wind blew in from right field all day Sunday, but it didn't seem to bother the Hillsboro Hops. The Hops pounded Spokane pitching for 16 hits, including three home runs and a total of nine extra-base hits, and the Indians lost 14-0 in the finale of a High-A Northwest League series at Avista Stadium.Hillsboro (26-31) took four of six this week, sending the Indians (23-34) into a last-place tie with Vancouver. Nine games remain in the NWL first half. The Hops jumped on top in the third. Yassel Soler led off with a double and later scored on a throwing error by catcher Juan Castillo. The big blow came from outfielder Avery Owusu-Asiedu, who crushed a fastball way over the netting above the left -field wall and into the fairgrounds' parking lot for his fifth homer of the season and a 3-0 lead.Soler doubled again in the third inning, knocking in two runners — both of whom walked. The Indians loaded the bases with one down in the bottom half on three singles, but Jack O'Dowd and Ethan Hedges popped up to the infield to end the only real scoring threat from the home team all game.Slade Caldwell clubbed a homer through the teeth of the strong right-to-left wind over the 401 mark in straight center field, his third of the season, to make it 8-0 in the seventh. The Hops picked up another run in the inning on a pair of singles and a fielder's choice off reliever Hunter Omlid. The Hops got five more in the eighth off Omlid, including a bases-loaded three-run double by Alberto Barriga, elevating Omlid's ERA to 13.50 through 11 relief appearances this season.Indians starter Jordy Vargas made it through just three innings. The 22-year-old righty allowed five runs on five hits and two walks with four strikeouts. He threw 65 pitches, 36 for strikes. The Indians travel to Eugene to start a six-game series against the first-place Emeralds on Tuesday at 6:35 p.m.

Purple Row After Dark: Brainstorming a new nightly mascot race
DENVER, CO - SEPTEMBER 18: Colorado Rockies mascot "Dinger" waves a flag to signal the start of the Comfort Dental "Tooth Trot" costumed mascot race during a break in the action of a game between the Colorado Rockies and the St. Louis Cardinals at Coors Field on September 18, 2013 in Denver, Colorado. (Photo by Dustin Bradford/Getty Images) | Getty Images The Milwaukee Brewers just came to town and took a series from the Colorado Rockies. It’s only fair that they leave behind the inspiration for a new tradition. The Brewers are home to the Famous Racing Sausages. During the middle of the sixth inning, five sausages (Bratwurst, Italian Sausage, Polish Sausage, Hot Dog, and Chorizo) race their way around the warning track at American Family Field. Across the league, you have several other mascot showdowns including the Washington Nationals’ Presidents Race and Pittsburgh Pirates’ Pierogi Race, and the Arizona Diamondbacks’ Legends Race. The New York Mets got the most hyper-local with it when they introduced their Five Borough Race last year. In the battle for NYC supremacy, “the pizza slice (Brooklyn), the skyscraper (Manhattan), the ferry (Staten Island), the giraffe (Bronx) and the subway (Queens)” race it out. It’s been several years since the Rockies last held the Comfort Dental Tooth Trot, the longstanding competition between Toothy the tooth, Bristles the toothbrush, and Fresh the toothpaste. It’s about time Coors Field was home to a new mascot race, one that better represents its home state. Here are some ideas:Blue Animals & Friends: The first idea that comes to mind would highlight our beloved blue icons: Blucifer and the Big Blue Bear! Since the blue animal options are (unfortunately) limited, I would branch out to include one (maybe both?) of the dancing people from the Denver Center for Performing Arts, as well as the dustpan (still blue!) from outside the Denver Art Museum.Local Legends: Hear me out. Costumed mascots of “The Strong Arm” Frank Azar, Dealin’ Doug, Jake Jabs, and our friend in the diamond business Tom Shane going toe to toe around the warning track. Food: We could follow Milwaukee and Pittsburgh and get in on the food fight. A cheeseburger (Denver is home to the first trademark for the term, back in 1935!), a square of shredded wheat (also invented in Denver! And it’s important to note that the shredded wheat would lose every race), a Casa Bonita sopapilla, a Palisade peach, and a Denver omelet get things cooking in a nightly sprint. I know which other infamous Colorado food you’re thinking of adding. No. We’re not doing that. Stop it.South Park: Speaking of Casa Bonita sopapillas, perhaps owners and South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone would get behind a Cartman, Kyle, Stan, and Kenny race. There’s a lot of potential there for how Kenny would get taken out of the race each night. Beer: Coors Banquet stubby bottle vs. Coors Light tall boy vs. Colorado Native can vs. a bottle of the Sandlot Brewery’s own Blue Moon. Give me my million dollar check and/or free Coors Field drinks for life certificate now, Molson-Coors Beverage Co.!Thank you for listening to the inner machinations of my mind. If the Rockies were to debut a race to replace the Tooth Trot, what would you like to see? Which Denver or Colorado themed anthropomorphic creatures would you like to see duking it out?Let us know below!Join the conversation!Sign up for a user account and get:Fewer adsCreate community postsComment on articles, community postsRec comments, community postsNew, improved notifications system! Please keep in mind our Purple Row Community Guidelines when you’re commenting. Sky-high ticket costs can't cool the cauldron of Madison Square Garden
Iconic Madison Square Garden will host games three and four of the NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs (Timothy A. CLARY)Soaring ticket prices and extra security for US President Donald Trump do not alter the electric energy of fabled Madison Square Garden as it hosts games three and four of the NBA Finals. The New York Knicks, chasing their first basketball championship since 1973, take a 2-0 lead over the San Antonio Spurs into Monday's game three of the best-of-seven series, with game four to follow on Wednesday.Ticket prices have skyrocketed out of the reach of most New Yorkers, but the self-proclaimed "World's Most Famous Arena" will still be packed to the rafters, with celebrities at courtside and Trump attending at least for game three. The shiny trappings are just part of the allure of the 58-year-old venue. But on Sunday evening, five people were wounded in a stabbing at Penn Station, located directly underneath the arena -- a reminder of the security concerns that also lurk ahead of major events in New York. The Garden is one of America's most storied venues -- where the yellow-tinged lighting and vintage photos of Muhammad Ali and the Rolling Stones displayed on the concourses nod to its place in sports and entertainment lore."There's nothing like seeing a basketball game at Madison Square Garden," said John Guercio, a 60-something accountant and self-proclaimed lifelong fan of the Knicks.NBA Hall of Famer Bill Bradley, who won titles with the Knicks in 1970 and 1973, says New York fans are the key to MSG's enduring spirit."It's a very loud audience, enthusiastic audience, critical audience, knowledgeable audience," Bradley said. "And when they get into the game they can carry the team."But, as Bradley knows all too well, the fans can turn against one of their own -- or even against the entire roster.Thrust into a position that was not his, Bradley had to endure the jeers of frenzied aficionados at the start of his professional career, along with spitting and tossed coins. He was embraced, he recalled, "as soon as we started winning."- 'Still awesome' -"The fans are just brutal here," said Guercio, who remembers a 2000s rough patch marked by six straight seasons without a playoff berth and the "dirt chanting" directed at coach Isiah Thomas."You come here, you've got to have tough skin," Guercio said."That's why players like playing here, because if you can win here, you can win anywhere."Today's Knicks have won the hearts of fans with a gritty style that saw them reach the Eastern Conference finals last season and build a 13-game winning streak in the current playoffs."They're likable, they're easy to love, they're easy to root for," said superfan Anthony Donahue.Unlike some of the past Knicks heroes, from Walt Frazier to Charles Oakley to Latrell Sprewell, these Knicks do not boast larger-than-life personalities. But "they play hard, they never give up," said Donahue. "I don't think they're out partying. They're not being stupid. They're themselves," he added. "And New York has wrapped our arms around them."Donahue does not believe that the eye-watering ticket prices have eroded MSG's DNA.Although it's now hard to find a ticket for less than $7,000 on the resale market for Monday's showdown, he noted that prices are much lower for season ticket holders."I've been at every playoff game this year," Donahue said. "The Garden, the crowd's still awesome."Rich Swann, who has been attending games for more than 30 years, draws a distinction between the regular-season and post-season vibe."During the regular season, you've got people who just come into games, it's a thing to do. Tourists come in," Swann said."Playoff atmosphere has been different. Playoff atmosphere is real."tu/bb/msp/mlm

Flash of greatness: Down-roster CB must reclaim distant Cowboys magic
It was a cool November afternoon. Polk High was down by three touchdowns in the championship game when an unassuming running back wearing the No. 33 took matters into his own hands. As a graduating senior, RB Al Bundy would go on to score four touchdowns enroute to victory, and a legend was born in the process. The Dallas Cowboys have a similar reputation-setting performer on their roster. Like Bundy, it was one brilliant performance that lives on in local lore. Josh Butler, a down-roster cornerback from Michigan State, was making his second career start for the Cowboys. Like Bundy, Butler posted one of the most unbelievable performances of the year on a similarly cool November afternoon in 2024. Unfortunately, it's been a one-off.Facing Washington as Dallas fought for their playoff lives, they needed everything Butler had to make victory possible. After only appearing in three games prior, Bulter exploded that day, posting 10 solo tackles, a sack and three passes defensed. Bulter helped the Cowboys get by the Commanders, 34-26, as he became one of the most exciting young defensive backs on the roster.“I am one that appreciates a good story 😉.”@Mr4thAndLong on CB Josh Butler’s 11 tackles, 3 PBUs, and a sack after getting the start vs. Washington. https://t.co/djfmHjttYkpic.twitter.com/iv2t9y37vH— DLLS Cowboys (@DLLS_Cowboys) November 25, 2024Sadly, one game later, Bulter would fall to a season-ending knee injury, the recovery of which, would bleed well into the following year. In all, Bulter has made just three career starts and played in just six career games, yet his performance that one autumn day in 2024 lives on, making one wonder if Butler still has a chance. The Cowboys have a smorgasbord of scenarios that could play out in their secondary. Top to bottom, everything is up in the air, giving a down-roster player like Bulter just enough of a cracked door to be a name worth knowing. At 6-foot, 182 pounds, Bulter isn't fast, but he's equipped for a variety of roles. The 29-year-old is well-versed in man and zone coverage, and as a special teamer, should slot in as a bubble player in training camp. Now, further removed from injury, Bulter can show everyone whether that brilliant Bundy-like performance in 2024 was a flash in the pan or a sign of more to come. Timberwolves’ Stunning 90s-Inspired Rebrand Sparks Overwhelming Fan Excitement Amid Kevin Garnett Nostalgia
In advance of the 2026–2027 NBA season, the Minnesota Timberwolves have announced a rebranding of their home court, clothing, and emblem. They posted the update on their X account on Sunday, showing off what they have in store for the fans. The 1990s, when the Wolves joined the league as an expansion team, served as the inspiration for their new logo. It was also when the franchise drafted a Hall of Fame star, Kevin Garnett. This month, fans may purchase the organization’s new merchandise. There will be a return to the previous logo with the howling wolf. They’ve also released new association, icon and statement jerseys. After seeing the new logo, NBA fans couldn’t help but be excited for the Timberwolves. Here are some of what the fans said.“These joints are cold as hell. Would’ve loved the whole ‘Timberwolves’ name spelled out, but this will do,” a fan said.“Not a fan of the blue unis, particularly too much white trim on the collar. Coulda been way better smh,” another fan commented.“Going to continue not winning a championship, paying homage to the 90s Kevin Garnett era,” one fan said.“New Wolves jerseys with pine trees? Bro they finally made uniforms that match how invisible they go in the playoffs Garnett spinning in his retirement. Mid af, change my mind,” someone commented.“Hate this bum a** team but these all go hard 🔥🔥🔥” a comment read.“They unlocked the KG era again… now Minnesota got that DAWG DNA back,” one fan commented.Anthony Edwards Reportedly Not Happy With the TimberwolvesMay 15, 2026; Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA; Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards (5) holds his shoulder after making contact with another player against the San Antonio Spurs in the second half during game six of the second round of the 2026 NBA Playoffs at Target Center. In 2024 and 2025, the team made it to back-to-back conference finals.Unfortunately for the Timberwolves, they lost in both runs. This season, they never got past the second round as they lost to the young San Antonio Spurs.According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, Edwards is reportedly not happy with the team’s roster situation. All season long, they did not have a solid floor general, which is one of the reasons they struggled in the regular season.“And so, going forward after this series, the Minnesota Timberwolves’ future is in question somewhat because of what Ant (Anthony Edwards) feels about the roster,” he said.“Going forward after this series, the Minnesota Timberwolves future is in question. The Timberwolves may be among the more active clubs ahead of free agency as they work to improve their existing squad.

Jamier Brown leads Big Walnut boys track to share of OHSAA state title
In the final meet of what will likely be his only track and field season at Big Walnut, junior Jamier Brown helped the Golden Eagles reach new heights June 7 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.Brown, a five-star football recruit who has committed to Ohio State as a wide receiver, was part of three first-place performances – including two record-setters – at the Division II state meet, leading Big Walnut to a share of the team championship. It was the first state title in program history for the Golden Eagles, who tied New Philadelphia with 41 points.“We thought we had the right pieces,” coach Ryan Borland said. “Moving to Division II [from Division I], we thought we could do well. The message to our kids is we have to be good and if Jamier is able to be with us, it’s icing on the cake. Football is calling. I was just trying to get him through track. Our goal was for him to be able to write his own story in track and field, and I think he did a pretty good job of that.”Brown, who won the Division I state title in the 100 meters last year for Huber Heights Wayne, won the 100 (10.42 seconds) and 200 (20.91) and anchored the first-place 400 relay (41.53), which also included Braydan Giesler, Jaxen Elliott and Dexter Chhuom.Brown’s 200 time and the 400 relay set OHSAA Division II and Division II state-meet records.Brown said he entered the state meet around 90% health-wise because he had been battling a groin injury for most of the season. Before the meet, the OHSAA said Brown met one of the exceptions under its transfer rules to be eligible for a full season.Brown expects to graduate early and enroll at Ohio State in early 2027.“A lot of people doubted me early in the year,” Brown said. “A lot of people didn’t know I was battling a groin injury. I still like to push myself. I also take care of myself. That’s another reason why I’m here today. ... I take good care of my body.”Big Walnut also got a win from sophomore Chase Bergsten in the 110 hurdles (14.39). Fremont Ross’ Mason Englund crossed the finish line first, but was later disqualified for running through a hurdle. Oregon Clay’s Barack James, another favorite entering the race, was disqualified for a false start. Also in Division II, Beechcroft junior Nehemiah Mills pulled off a records trifecta in the 400, with his time of 46.91 setting marks for OHSAA Division II, the Division II state meet and Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.Mills, who also was sixth in the 100 (10.67) and seventh in the 200 (21.57), won the 400 in Division I last season.“I feel so relieved,” he said. “Words can’t describe how good I feel. It’s amazing. At first, I was a little concerned that I wouldn’t have much competition in Division II as D-I, but D-II definitely has the upper hand over D-I, especially this year.”Central Ohio athletes enjoy stellar Division I state meetSeveral Division I boys athletes turned in championship efforts at state, including Olentangy Liberty junior TJ Lichter, who won the 110 hurdles (13.92).“I just wanted to show people who I am, and I knew I could do it,” Lichter said. “I had to put the little things together. I worked on a lot of technique stuff. It feels great. I’ve never had a feeling like this before.”Olentangy Berlin senior Miles King won the 300 hurdles (36.93), finishing ahead of runner-up Khalil Church (37.14) of Gahanna Lincoln.“It feels great finally getting to this point and the hard work paying off, getting that gold [medal],” said King, who finished second in the 300 hurdles last season and will compete at Indiana University.Olentangy’s Jet Cornelius, Joaquin Love, Brody Maslouski and Jacob Linley won the 800 relay (1:25.49).“It feels great,” said Cornelius, who ran the anchor leg. “It feels great to bring it home to Lewis Center, Ohio. I’m glad I can be a part of this.”Love, Linley, Jai Tucker and Evan Plymale finished second in the 1,600 relay (3:17.03).Lancaster’s Gabriel McNeil won the 800 (1:52.46), with Dublin Jerome’s Graham Tyler finishing third (1:53.34) a day after anchoring the Celtics’ first-place 3,200 relay.“It’s amazing,” McNeil said. “I still have a little bit of adrenaline. It will probably kick in when I look at Instagram. It feels surreal.”Gahanna’s Ronald Neal won the long jump (23 feet, 4¼ inches) and teammate Elijah Daniels finished second (23-1½).Gahanna finished second (47) in the team standings behind Wayne (55). Jerome finished fourth (32) and Olentangy was sixth (31).High school sports reporter Frank DiRenna can be reached at fdirenna@dispatch.com and at @DispatchFrank on X.This article originally appeared on The Columbus Dispatch: Ohio State recruit Jamier Brown leads Big Walnut track to state title

3 takeaways from DC Defenders' upset of Orlando Storm in UFL playoffs
DAYTONA BEACH — The UFL’s No. 1 seed won’t be competing in the United Bowl, but the defending champions will. The DC Defenders upset the top-seeded Orlando Storm 28-22 on June 7 at Daytona Stadium to continue their quest for back-to-back UFL championships. The Storm, on the other hand, were eliminated after finishing as the regular-season champions in their inaugural season. On top of the playoff implications, Sunday’s game was an anomaly that hadn’t been seen at the professional level in 83 years. It was the third consecutive game between Orlando and DC after the two played their last pair of regular-season games against one another. The last time it happened was in 1943 when the New York Giants and Washington Redskins played three consecutive games against each other. After losing the first two, the Defenders finally downed the Storm in the postseason. Here are three takeaways.Orlando held to one offensive touchdownThe Storm were led by MVP finalist Jack Plummer, who is the league’s leading passer and sported an impressive 17-to-1 touchdown-to-interception ratio entering the playoffs.Unfortunately for Plummer and the rest of Orlando, DC edge rusher Derick Roberson was also a finalist, and his unit was responsible for keeping the Storm out of the end zone.Orlando didn’t have trouble getting to the red zone, but that’s when the Defenders lived up to their names and refused to allow the Storm to score. Orlando mustered two field goals on its first two drives once DC’s defense resisted. The Storm had four plays at the Defenders’ 1-yard line on their third drive of the game, but the Defenders stuffed three consecutive runs before Roberson sacked Plummer to turn them over on downs.“The red zone was not kind to our offense today, and that’s unfortunate,” Orlando head coach Anthony Becht said. “I really felt like we were moving the ball well … From an execution standpoint, we weren’t at our best.”Orlando’s only passing touchdown was a 40-yard bomb from Plummer to wide receiver Chris Rowland with 3:02 remaining in the game.Jason Bean successful in fifth outing vs. StormJason Bean began the season as the Louisville Kings’ starter before getting traded to DC on April 19 for quarterback Mike DiLiello. The former Kansas Jayhawk initially took the backseat to starter Jordan Ta’amu. But after Ta’amu’s season ended with an injury coincidentally sustained against the Kings, Bean was thrust into the starter’s role after he replaced Spencer Sanders. And on Sunday, Bean was the offense’s primary catalyst against the UFL’s No. 1 scoring defense.Bean finished 18 for 33 for 233 yards and a touchdown without an interception, and he also added 40 yards on five rushes. Thanks to Bean’s performance as the Defenders’ signal caller, they were able to drop 28 on the Storm, the most they allowed all season. It kind of makes sense, considering Bean prepared to play Orlando five times this season — the final three in DC and twice in Louisville before he was traded.“Being in the playbook for a certain amount of time, and then playing against a team five times in a season, it’s got to click some time,” Bean said. “So I’m glad that it was this week, and I’m glad we got the win today.”Crowd packed Daytona Stadium despite venue changeThe Storm were set to host Sunday’s game in Orlando until a scheduling overlap with an international soccer match at their usual home field at Inter&Co Stadium forced them to look elsewhere.Venues in Orlando and as far away as Columbus, Ohio, were scouted to potentially host the Storm’s playoff game before the UFL finally settled on Daytona Stadium, home of Bethune-Cookman University.Daytona Beach locals, Orlando faithful and even the occasional DC Defenders fan packed the left grandstand with 6,317 fans. Both parking lots were full, forcing the influx of spectators to park in the grass on the side of LGPA Boulevard. The crowd was a factor for the Storm, as their fans were loud enough to force DC to take a timeout early in the game.Orlando’s fans ultimately went home empty-handed, but it was a positive sign for a team in its debut season.“Man, I turned around, they were fun, they were loud, a lot of orange in the stands, and for the people that made the drive, just really blessed and thankful,” Becht said. This article originally appeared on The Daytona Beach News-Journal: DC Defenders head to United Bowl after Orlando Storm upset in Daytona

Victor Wembanyama acknowledges De'Aaron Fox's special impact for the Spurs as a leader
Victor Wembanyama acknowledges De'Aaron Fox's special impact for the Spurs as a leader originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The San Antonio Spurs' core group of players is filled with youngsters. Their superstar, Victor Wembanyama, is only 22, while Stephon Castle is 21 and Dylan Harper is 20. For such a young team, they are already in the NBA Finals, a massive accomplishment for such a young squad. With that youth, the Spurs needed someone to stabilize the team, preferably in the point guard position. That is where De'Aaron Fox came in, as he has been the optimal floor general and locker room leader for this team.Victor Wembanyama loves De'Aaron Fox's impact as a leaderDuring his time with the Sacramento Kings, Fox had to grow up fast. It was a younger team for the most part, but they needed a star-level player to step up, and he was that player.Unfortunately, a lengthy stint with the Kings only resulted in one postseason run during the 2023 NBA Playoffs under head coach Mike Brown, who is ironically on the other side of the 2026 NBA Finals with the New York Knicks now.MORE: De'Aaron Fox speaks on how he and the Spurs help Victor Wembanyama when he strugglesFox knew he had to leave the Kings to get some semblance of success in his career. Israel says it has struck Iran after taking missile fire
A projectile streaks through the sky over central Israel during an Iranian missile attack, Sunday, June 7, 2026. (AP Photo/Ohad Zwigenberg)2026-06-08T01:46:57Z DUBAI, United Arab Emirate (AP) — Israel launched airstrikes early Monday targeting central and western Iran in response to missile fire from Tehran, attacks that threatened to drag the wider Middle East back into a regional war. Iranian state television reported the sound of explosions being heard in Isfahan, Karaj, Tabriz and Tehran, without immediately elaborating. A witness in Tehran described hearing at least one large blast somewhere to the west of the country’s capital city. Iran closed the airspace around Tehran’s Imam Khomeini International Airport, the country’s main airfield, after the Israeli attack.Iranian officials offered no details on what had been struck, nor any damage information. Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard said that Israel used air-launched ballistic missiles in its attack Monday morning, without elaborating. The Israeli military at dawn in Iran issued a short statement as the strikes started: “A short while ago, the Israeli Air Force struck military targets belonging to the Iranian terror regime in western and central Iran.” It did not elaborate. The White House did not respond to messages about the strikes and whether they were done in coordination with the U.S. For days, negotiations between Iran and the United States over the fragile ceasefire in the war had been stalled by the fighting between Israel and the Lebanese Shiite militia Hezbollah. Israel now occupies southern Lebanon and had moved into areas of the country it hadn’t held in a quarter century — leading to fears about them further widening their campaign. Read More On Sunday, Israel launched airstrikes in Beirut’s southern suburbs. Iran retaliated with its own strike on Israel, which led to Monday morning’s attack by Israel on Iran.U.S. President Donald Trump earlier told a Fox News Channel reporter that he wanted the Iranians to stop firing missiles and return to the negotiating table. He also said that Israel’s strikes in Lebanon earlier Sunday were not coordinated with the U.S. and “I’m not happy about it.” A senior U.S. official said Trump had called Netanyahu to urge him not to retaliate immediately for the Iranian missile attack. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to describe a private phone call, said that Trump believed he had convinced Netanyahu to wait.Trump “got Bibi to hold off for the time being,” the official said. The official would not offer any other details of the call, and there was no immediate comment from Netanyahu’s office.___ Matthew Lee in Washington and Michelle L. (Ernesto Torres Jr via AP)2026-06-08T00:13:23Z MANILA, Philippines (AP) — A magnitude 7.8 earthquake shook part of the southern Philippines early Monday, causing damage in a key coastal city, knocking down power and sparking a tsunami warning on some regional coasts.People were urged to go to higher ground. There were no immediate reports of casualties, and it was not clear if people were trapped or injured in the collapse of a small building in General Santos city. The coastal city of more than 700,000 people is a commercial hub on the island of Mindanao known for its tuna processing industry. The epicenter was 13 kilometers (8 miles) southwest of General Santos and had a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology. It struck at 7:37 a.m.The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said tsunami waves up to 3 meters (10 feet) were possible on some coasts of the Philippines. Waves up to 1 meter (3 feet) were possible on some coasts of Indonesia and Malaysia. “We advise people to evacuate to higher grounds or go further inland,” Teresito Bacolcol, the head of the Philippine institute, warned people living in coastal areas. Mikal Bridges Draws Inspiration From 2021 Heartbreak As His Knicks Get Close to Winning It All
The New York Knicks have two players who have been to the NBA Finals once – Mikal Bridges and OG Anunoby. Only one of them got to celebrate by the end of the series.Anunoby was part of the Toronto Raptors squad that won the 2019 NBA championship although he did not play in the Finals series due to an injury. Bridges was part of the 2021 Phoenix Suns that got defeated by Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks in the finals stage. The bitter part about Bridges’ stint was that his team almost had it all. His Suns went up 2-0 against the Bucks but then they surrendered the next four games and the Bucks wrapped it all up in six games, realizing the team’s popular phrase “Bucks in Six”.The Knicks forward still remembers how they let go of the series and that’s something he wants his current team to be aware of as the enter Game 3 against the San Antonio Spurs. He believes anything can happen and they should have a mind-set that the series is still 0-0.“I remember losing four straight. They all know, the series is far from over. Karl-Anthony Towns Silences Critics With Dominant NBA Finals Run as MVP Buzz Reaches Fever Pitch
Karl-Anthony Towns has always been subject to criticism. Early in his career, Towns has been called out for his lackluster defense, inconsistent offense and questionable leadership skills. However, things have changed for KAT since he became part of the New York Knicks. This season, Towns and the Knicks have a shot at making history in the NBA Finals. They captured the first two games against the San Antonio Spurs and hold a 2-0 lead ahead of Game 3 on Monday. After their 105-104 win in Game 2, critics and fans started to rave about the star big man.Even former great Charles Barkley thinks Towns can be the Knicks’ MVP in the Finals. On Sunday, longtime NBA commentator Colin Cowherd had praise for Karl-Anthony Towns. He praised KAT’s Hall of Fame skill and the way he has changed since joining the New York club.“Karl-Anthony Towns, if he wins MVP, will make the Hall of Fame and this is where KAT gets a lot of credit,” Cowherd said. “He was always known as kind of a flaky player with immense talent you couldn’t depend on. He’s literally been the opposite.“This is where KAT gets a lot of credit”@colincowherd & @_JasonLT discuss how Karl-Anthony towns took his game to another level pic.twitter.com/A8WOMQ11RF— The Volume (@TheVolumeSports) June 7, 2026“He has literally been the sturdiest, most dependable, greatest teammate. And that’s not a criticism. His rep was dumb fouls, streaky scorer, kind of goofy — the opposite.”Jason Timpf chimed in and said that KAT was “mistake-prone” early in his career, and there were questions about whether a team could win with him. Timpf also said that the Knicks star isn’t making as many mistakes as before. The Knicks Have a Looming Karl-Anthony Towns Decision After the NBA FinalsJun 5, 2026; San Antonio, Texas, USA; New York Knicks center Karl-Anthony Towns (32) reacts after game two of the 2026 NBA Finals at Frost Bank Center. Mandatory Credit: Daniel Dunn-Imagn ImagesKarl-Anthony Towns has been one of the most valuable players for the Knicks. Amid their run, however, there are upcoming concerns about Towns’ future with the team. He has one year left in his four-year, $220 million contract extension before he’s eligible to pick up his $61 million player option. The Knicks have contract issues that need to be resolved following their series. Reaching the second round is not what the organization wants, but they also want to reward Towns for the work that he has done.“The reality of today’s NBA means there are second-apron concerns for the Knicks to take into consideration,” Sam Amick of The Athletic wrote, “and a desire to be prudent enough with the payroll so as not to compromise roster depth. But the tone of those talks, given everything Towns has done here, should be far more flattering toward him this time around. He deserves immense credit for that much.”If there’s one player who deserves to get paid by the Knicks, it’s Kar-Anthony Towns.

Denny Hamlin explains his Kyle Busch tribute after winning at Michigan
After Denny Hamlin cruised past the finish line at Michigan International Speedway on Sunday — the next closest car more than 11 seconds behind him — a member of his crew brought a flag to his car.Hamlin then started going down the backstretch in the opposite direction so every fan at the FireKeepers Casino 400 could see the flag as it unfurled. It was a No. 18, designed to merge the two numbers most recently used by the late Kyle Busch.Busch raced in a No. 18 Toyota for the longest stretch of his NASCAR career with Joe Gibbs Racing, winning a pair of Cup Series championships. But for the past four seasons, he had piloted the No. 8 Chevrolet for Richard Childress Racing. The No. 18 was etched on the flag to incorporate both the JGR No. 18 and the RCR No. 8, the latter of which was personally stylized by Busch. It was a fitting tribute by Hamlin for his former teammate. They raced together for Gibbs from 2018 to 2022.And on Sunday, Hamlin captured the 63rd victory of his Cup Series career, moving him into a tie for ninth all-time in wins with Busch, who shockingly died on May 21 at the age of 41 due to complications from pneumonia that progressed into sepsis. After the race, Hamlin explained how the flag came together. Hamlin said planning started last Monday morning, the day after he won his 62nd race at Nashville.“I appreciate RCR letting us use the stylized 8 with the Joe Gibbs Racing the 1. It was just a happy balance that I felt good about when it all came out,” Hamlin said. “The NASCAR community has kind of just been through it over the last — certainly the last few weeks, but then just generally in the last six, eight months. It’s been tough. I just wanted to pay my respects to someone that I really did look up to and taught me so much as a teammate. There’s nothing we can say or do that’s going to make his family feel better, but at least during that little time, you can pay him the respects that he deserves.”This one's for you, Rowdy. 8️⃣🏁 pic.twitter.com/9YyOL2lblF— FOX: NASCAR (@NASCARONFOX) June 7, 2026Hamlin joked that Busch would’ve been mad about him moving ahead of his former teammate on the all-time leaderboard.“He would have been pissed today, absolutely,” Hamlin said. “But I would have said to him, you’ll be around here longer. You’ll get me back.”Hamlin also wore a hat with the stylized No. 18 on it, but indicated that it was a one-time use and likely wouldn’t be available for sale to fans.Denny Hamlin on coming up with the Kyle Busch flag that borrows both JGR and RCR fonts pic.twitter.com/Xrq13NsECz— Matt Weaver (@MattWeaverRA) June 8, 2026The 45-year-old Hamlin is having one of the best years of his career, now having notched three victories. And what I mean by that is, man, he’s able to kind of retain the information we’ve given him so far. I feel like he’s getting a little bit better every day, talk about the processing speed of the quarterback. He’s got a lot on his plate, but he knows what the calls are, he knows where guys are supposed to be, the shifts, the motions. And that’s good. For a young guy, that’s really good. PHOENIX (AP) — The Arizona Diamondbacks have signed outfielder Max Kepler, who is still serving an 80-game suspension for testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs.Terms of the deal announced on Sunday were not available.Kepler will not be able to report to the team until June 25, when his suspension ends. He will remain on the restricted list and not count against Arizona's 40-man roster until then.Kepler tested positive in January for Epitrenbolone, a metabolite of Trenbolone that's contained in some products used in body-building stores and has been used in products to promote cattle growth. In memoir, Chris Hill looks back on 31 momentous years as Utes AD
Chris Hill, athletic director at the University of Utah from 1987 to 2018, is pictured in his home in Salt Lake City on Monday, March 23, 2026. | Laura Seitz, Deseret News “Try to say friggin’ and flippin’.’”In 1989, when Chris Hill, the athletic director at the University of Utah, was in the process of hiring the best, and most ungovernable, basketball coach to ever anchor a bench in the state of Utah, he pulled out a yellow legal pad and in longhand sketched out a contract as he was flying to Seattle to finalize the deal.Knowing Rick Majerus’s proclivity to use, shall we say, rather colorful language from time to time, Hill inserted the above-noted provision.True story — and he still has that original yellow pad to prove it.The Majerus contract is just one of three decades worth of stories the most accomplished AD in University of Utah history has captured in his memoir, “Thirty-one Years In The Front Row,” that was released this week, just in time for Father’s Day. A contract between Chris Hill and Rick Majerus is pictured at Hill’s home in Salt Lake City on Monday, March 23, 2026. Hill was athletic director at the University of Utah from 1987 to 2018, and hired Majerus to coach the men’s basketball team in 1989. | Laura Seitz, Deseret News For the better part of the last two years, Hill has racked his memory, assembled his memorabilia and huddled with former Deseret News sports writer Brad Rock and his top aide at the U, Liz Abel, to capture, through story-telling, an era of University of Utah athletics that transformed what had been a middle-tier D-I school into one of the most admired athletic departments in the country. From 1987 through 2018, Hill and the Utes embarked on a building phase unlike anything in the school’s history. One that saw tens of millions spent on new facilities, including a total makeover of Rice-Eccles Stadium, a trip to the NCAA basketball tournament championship game, two undefeated BCS-busting football teams and the Utes first admittance into a power conference when it joined the PAC-12.And yet, when he was first hired as AD in October 1987, Chris Hill was the unlikeliest of candidates to steer the Ute ship. His credentials amounted to directing a nonprofit and raising money for the Ute booster club. He’d had a grand total of eight jobs, one of them as a house painter, in 14 years since first coming to Utah in 1973 as a graduate assistant to head basketball coach Bill Foster, the coach he’d played for at Rutgers. “I was an Irish Catholic left-wing Democrat from New Jersey,” Hill recalls. “When I got here I’d never met a Mormon.”Count him among the skeptics who doubted his chances. A mock-up of the cover of Chris Hill’s upcoming book. Hill was the athletic director at the University of Utah from 1987 to 2018. | Laura Seitz, Deseret News From his memoir: “I knew that being 37 years old and having never been an AD before and not being from Utah or Latter-day Saint — might be a detriment to my application.”But when Jim Copeland left Utah for the AD job at Virginia in 1987, somebody had to replace him.Hill’s big break came in his interview with school president Chase Peterson. “Probably the only person who would have hired me,” he attests. “He saw something and took a chance on me. Because I had my Ph.D., he suggested I should go by Dr. Hill. He said “you’re 37, you look 27 and you’re supposed to be 47, so if I call you Dr. Hill the faculty will be more accepting.”The new AD didn’t take long to make his mark. He was just two years into the job when he fired the very popular (but not wildly successful) basketball coach Lynn Archibald and replaced him with Rick Majerus, who perennially led the Utes to the NCAA tournament, including four Sweet 16 appearances, two Elite Eights and one Final Four. It was the foreshadowing of another bold and legendary hire in 2003, when he fired the very popular football coach Ron McBride and replaced him with Urban Meyer, who went 22-2 in his two years at Utah before moving on to win three national championships at Florida State and Ohio State. Chris Hill, athletic director at the University of Utah from 1987 to 2018, is pictured in his home in Salt Lake City on Monday, March 23, 2026. | Laura Seitz, Deseret News Hill tells stories about these experiences and many, many more. About donors and fundraising — he recalls the day Utah Jazz owner Larry H. Miller came by his office to write out a check for $500,000 for the stadium project, then before he left wrote out another one for $500,000 when Hill assured him it would mean the pillars would be covered in red sandstone. About getting into the Pac-12 — it all began with a 2009 phone call Hill made to Colorado AD Mike Bohn. About the four job offers he turned down to stay at Utah — Miami (1993), Duke (1998), Washington (2004), Oregon (2008).And through it all there’s the Majerus stories. Which never get old.He tells about Majerus’ first speaking engagement on campus:“I picked him up in my car and he was wearing a T-shirt, shorts and flip-flops, which immediately made me panic and wonder what I was doing. I introduced him to the gathering and he was wonderful. He had great knowledge of topics outside of basketball and made a lot of jokes about food. But all the while I was waiting for the next shoe to drop. When Rick opened it up for questions, someone asked, ‘What do you think about all these Mormons?’“I then started realizing that I still had my teaching credential, my wife had a job, and we could get by if I got fired over what Rick might say. I don’t know if there was a time during his career when I was more petrified about a response from him, but he was great. He took a breath and said, ‘Anybody who keeps a year’s supply of food in their home is a friend of mine.’”Hill kept his job. As did Majerus, who was never perfect. But he friggin’ tried.“Thirty-one Years In The Front Row” is available at chrishillstories.com and on Amazon.

Sean McAdam: Red Sox’ primary issue remains the same — not nearly enough offense
BRONX, NY - JUNE 07: Outfielder Jarren Duran was one of many Red Sox hitters who struggled in Sunday's loss to the Yankees. (Photo by Rich Graessle/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images)Icon Sportswire via Getty ImagesNEW YORK — In the visitor’s dugout before the series finale was to be played here Sunday, a reporter asked Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy about the luxury of having four quality starters as part of his team’s rotation.“It starts with starting pitching,” said Tracy. “It’s a cliche, but it does. It starts with starting pitching. Most teams I think would tell you, at some point, if you’re going to run off a stretch of games where you win eight out of 10 — you’re not doing that with bad starting pitching. It won’t happen.“But you have the ability to do that if you can string together a string of starts. We have good starting pitching, so at some point, we feel like that could happen and having that pitching is going to be a benefit to us.”Well, in theory yes. The quartet of Sonny Gray, Payton Tolle, Connelly Early and Ranger Suarez is a solid one, and at the very least, has the ability to keep the Red Sox in games on an almost daily basis. But in actuality, as the 2026 Red Sox are finding, quality starting pitching only gets you so far.Since changing managers on April 26, the Red Sox went into Sunday with the best ERA (3.38) in the American League and the fifth-best in baseball. And what has it gotten them? Not much. The Sox are 17-19 in that stretch after Sunday’s 6-1 loss to the Yankees at Yankee Stadium. The reason is obvious: the team’s anemic offensive showing. Sunday, they were held in check by New York starter Cam Schlittler and a host of relievers, limited to a single run.“(Schlittler’s) awfully good,” said Tracy. “You kind of go in, knowing you’re going to have to grind...Expected the game to kind of go that way.”In five games with the Yankees this season, the Red Sox have scored more than two runs exactly once.Actually forget scoring zero or one run; Sunday marked the 35th time the Red Sox had scored fewer than four runs. In such contests, they’re a lowly 8-27.A case could be made that Sunday’s loss could be laid at the feet of the Boston bullpen. True, the lineup managed just one run — thanks to a Willson Contreras RBI-double in the fifth — but that was enough to keep the Sox locked in a 1-1 tie with two outs in the bottom of the eighth. Then, Justin Slaten and newcomer Joe La Sorsa came unglued, banged around for four hits — two of them multi-run homers — and a walk. Just like that, a taut pitcher’s duel became a blowout. But a few runs here and there would have changed things dramatically. The Sox managed to get either the leadoff man or the second man in an inning on base four times while Schlittler was still in the game, but failed, again and again, to cash in. They were 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position.Certainly, Suarez did his part. “He was awesome,” said Tracy. “Didn’t walk a man, six strikeouts, in control of the game. He really threw the ball very well.”Brilliant over his 6.1 innings, he wiggled out of a bases-loaded mess in the fourth and yielded just one run — the fifth time in his last seven outings that he had limited the opposition to a run or no runs. Tellingly, the Sox are just 2-3 in those five games.Do Red Sox starters feel as though they need to be perfect under such circumstances?“Every time we go out there, we’re facing a good team, good pitching,” said Suarez. “That’s part of the game. I know that every single hitter wants to go out there perform; today, that wasn’t the case. But I know that they go out and try to do their thing, just like I try to do my thing.”Clearly, that plan isn’t working. The Red Sox remain dead last in homers and next-to-last in runs scored – with little hope for improvement any time soon.Until that changes, having strong, reliable starting pitching will feel like having a great air conditioning system in a condemned house — a small comfort, but ultimately, not very helpful.More Red Sox coverageRed Sox reactions: Game gets away with eighth-inning bullpen implosionRed Sox need RH bat; could one be arriving soon after rehab assignment?Garrett Whitlock injury: How Red Sox pitcher fared in first rehab outingBrayan Bello says ‘whatever role’ the Red Sox want him in, he’ll be ready to take advantageRed Sox have ‘obvious’ choice at Worcester to fill rotation vacancyRead the original article on MassLive. Sparks put out Fire, snap three-game losing streak
LA Sparks forward Nneka Ogwumike (30) looks for the open teammate at a WNBA basketball game against the Portland Fire, Sunday June 7th, 2026 in Los Angeles, California.LOS ANGELES -- This had to be a big relief for the Sparks. The pendulum stopped swinging. With a good balance of offensive firepower and defensive prowess, the Sparks (5-6) finally put together a complete game at home. The team from the City of Angels pulled away in the second half and put the Fire (6-7) out with an 89-72 victory. The Sparks held the Portland Fire to 29 points and forced them to 14 turnovers after halftime."It wasn't anything crazy at halftime," Sparks coach Lynne Roberts answered after asked about what was said during halftime. "I think you get a better feel of what the game plan was and we just locked in. I think defensively, giving up 12 points in that third quarter and 29 in the second half, we did the things we were supposed to do. And I was proud of the effort defensively. (The Fire) had 11 (offensive) boards at halftime. They only had 3 in the second half. That was huge. In big part to (Nneka Ogwumike and Dearica Hamby), just the rebounding, 17 and 12 (respectively). Dee didn't have a single offensive rebound in the half. And she had 6 in the second half. Those are game-winning plays. Nneka was just unbelievable down there on the glass. So those two held it down and defensively we were much, much better."Ogwumike basically said to leave it all on the court."(In) that fourth quarter, I think we were motivated," Ogwumike said about their defense. "We were playing for each other. Offense is offense but defense is really where it's at. And today I think we did a really good job of not leaving any gas in the tank on the defensive end."What did they like defensively in tonight’s game? Q by Marisa Ingemi of @latimessportspic.twitter.com/Irk2Hlaikx— Rey-Rey (@TheNoLookPass) June 8, 2026The Sparks have not been great at home (2-5 after the win) and they faced similar challenges last season. Ogwumike made a note of how important winning at home was."Winning at home is imperative," Ogwumike said. "And it's not just because you need a win at home but when it gets down to the season, you're playing for home court advantage because there is an advantage there. We have a very iconic arena as well. There's so much here that the fans bring. It's important that we are able to generate and maintain the focus that it requires to win at home. Because we've shown that we can win on the road. The system is a bit more insular when you're on the road. So we want to be able to create that same focus, laser focus, when we're at home to be able to win. And I think today was a good start."The defense was great for the Sparks in the first half and even better in the second. The Fire would only end up shooting .361 from the field and that kind of stingness on the defensive end is what the Sparks are capable of. But can they do it on a consistent basis?"We've been close with a couple of the losses where we didn't do that," Coach Roberts said about following the game plan for all 40 minutes. "The basketball gods will make you pay if you don't do things right. And so we need to build on it. But like I said earlier, we have to collectively, as a staff, as players choose to do it every game. And I think what (Nneka) has said, too, about just leaving it all out there, not saving anything, not playing it safe, just emptying your tank, I think that's what it feels like. And then you feel better about how you play when you empty it all out there and you give it everything you've got for each other. So that's what we need to build on. And today's a good step but lots more to go."Stopping a three-game losing streak is certainly a great first step.Hamby had 22 points and 12 rebounds while Ogwumike was a steady presence throughout the game with 20 points and a glass-breaking 17 boards. Kelsey Plum came on in the second half with 13 of her 16 points in the second half.As for the Portland Fire, they were led by Pancake's mom, Megan Gustafson, with 16 points and 11 boards. Emily Engstler and Carla Leite were the only other players that had double figs at 10 points each. Sarah Ashlee Barker, who made her first return to Los Angeles since the expansion draft, scored six points and seven assists in her second start of the season. The next step for the Sparks is to go back on the road, where they undoubtedly do better (a 3-1 slate). They're going to go to the Pacific Northwest first to Seattle to face the Storm and start a three-game trip. Can they stand the rain on Wednesday?

Hapoel Tel Aviv entered the playoffs as one of the league’s leading contenders, while Hapoel Jerusalem has been a regular presence in the later stages of Israeli basketball in recent years.David Bassan, CEO of the Israeli Basketball Premier League, said the crowd was being evacuated and that the final quarter would continue.“We are evacuating the crowd and continuing the final quarter,” Bassan said. Before the decision was made, Hapoel Tel Aviv coach Dimitris Itoudis was heard questioning the stoppage. The difficulties of holding major public events during heightened levels of security“The momentum is with us. I don’t understand much about security matters. Is there an air raid siren? So why are you stopping the game? This is why we came back, to compete for a championship,” Itoudis said. The incident came one year after the war with Iran disrupted the Israeli basketball championship series between Maccabi Tel Aviv and Hapoel Jerusalem, which had been tied 1-1 when play was stopped. That interruption left the league dealing with one of the most unusual endings to a basketball season in Israeli sports history.Sunday’s stoppage again highlighted the difficulty of holding major public events during periods of heightened security tension, especially indoor games with thousands of fans in attendance. The Home Front Command instructed the public to continue following official updates and guidance.

(Photo by Jürgen Fromme - firo sportphoto/Getty Images) | Getty Images The situation surrounding Bayern Munich and Eintracht Frankfurt left-back Nathaniel Brown seems to be evolving quickly, but the club’s interest is not exactly a new thing. In fact, Bild (via @iMiaSanMia) is reporting that Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany wanted Brown when the manager was at Burnley:@BILD confirms @Plettigoal’s report that Bayern reached an agreement with Nathaniel Brown over a summer transfer. Vincent Kompany is particularly keen on the German international and is determined to have him in the squad next season. Kompany actually wanted Brown back in Burnley, but the player opted for Frankfurt back then. Bayern consider him as the hottest left-back prospect in all of Europe. However, negotiations with Eintracht Frankfurt are expected to be tough. Markus Krösche is currently holding out for around €65m. The expectation is that he will not significantly lower his demands.Brown was born in Amberg, Bavaria, and his family still lives there. He was quickly convinced of the move to Munich and sees Bayern as his absolute dream destination.Working out the financials with Eintracht Frankfurt could, indeed, prove to be tough and there is also the threat that Arsenal attempts a late swoop, as well. That said, Bayern Munich seems determined to secure Brown’s signature.
