Liverpool step up Eli Junior Kroupi transfer deal after Andoni Iraola appointment
Liverpool step up Eli Junior Kroupi transfer deal after Andoni Iraola appointmentLiverpool are heading for big changes in attack this summer. The Reds have waved goodbye to Mohamed Salah after the Egyptian King reached an agreement to rip up his £400k per week contract one year early.Federico Chiesa is likely to join him in the departure lounge while there is uncertainty over Rio Ngumoha and Cody Gakpo.Factor in Hugo Ekitike’s injury - and Alexander Isak’s frequent injury issues - and you can see why Richard Hughes and Andoni Iraola may be seeking forwards. One name to appear on the radar ahead of the 43-year-old’s appointment as head coach was Bournemouth’s Eli Junior Kroupi.Liverpool to intensify Kroupi chaseReds recruiters are reported to have been impressed by the Frenchman’s breakout Premier League campaign - with the outgoing champions among the teams competing for his signature this summer.Plans to sign the 19-year-old will now be advanced following Iraola’s installation according to a report in TEAMtalk.Unfortunately for the Reds it looks like Bournemouth will be able to resist offers for their young forward talent this summer with the player under contract until 2029.“Arsenal and Liverpool have all been tracking the forward, with the latter maintaining a particularly close watch following Iraola’s move to Anfield,” the report reads.“There is no expectation that Kroupi will leave and Bournemouth are planning for him to be a major part of Rose’s project moving forward, and, at the very least, for another season at least.”Eli Junior Kroupi: Situation summaryEli Junior Kroupi is a 19-year-old French forward, born in Lorient in June 2006, who has rapidly become one of the Premier League’s standout teenage attackers at Bournemouth.Signed from Lorient with the deal completed in early 2025, he adapted quickly to English football.Standing around 1.79m with a strong, mobile frame, he combines a low centre of gravity with genuine explosiveness over the first few yards. On the pitch, Kroupi profiles as a modern hybrid forward: primarily a centre-forward, but comfortable as a second striker, No.10 or on the left.He offers sharp movement in behind, drops to link play, and presses with real intensity, thriving in Bournemouth’s high-tempo, front-foot system. His 2025/26 breakthrough saw him hit double figures in the league, with a finishing profile built on varied techniques, shots from range and an instinct for attacking imperfect chances.Contractually, Bournemouth are protected by a long-term deal running to 2029, reportedly without a release clause, which has emboldened the club’s “not for sale” stance and talk of valuations in the €60–70m bracket and beyond.Internally, there is confidence they can resist offers this summer, with briefings suggesting a serious exit would only be entertained closer to 2027 at nine-figure levels.Kroupi himself has publicly indicated he is happy at Bournemouth and looking forward to European football with the Cherries.Even so, his trajectory has put him firmly on the radar of the Premier League elite, with Arsenal, Manchester City and others monitoring him closely and being linked with big-money moves after his debut full Premier League season. For now, the most realistic medium-term destiny feels like a future marquee move to a Champions League contender rather than an imminent jump in 2026, as Bournemouth seek to build around him for at least one more campaign.

China’s Xi given lavish welcome in North Korea ahead of closely watched talks with Kim
A building is decorated with the flags of China and North Korea in Pyongyang, Monday, June 8, 2026. (AP Photo/Jon Chol Jin)2026-06-08T01:03:15Z SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Chinese President Xi Jinping received a lavish welcome as he arrived in North Korea on Monday for a rare visit expected to focus on reasserting China’s unique influence over the North in return for providing economic and political benefits.China’s Xinhua News Agency reported that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and his wife Ri Sol Ju welcomed Xi and his wife Peng Liyuan upon their arrival at Pyongyang’s international airport. Xinhua said the two leaders shook hands. Xi later arrived at Pyongyang’s main square, where a military honor guard and thousands of people, including children carrying balloons and hopping, staged a welcoming ceremony. Buildings surrounding the plaza were draped in the two countries’ flags, giant portraits of Kim and Xi and red-and-yellow banners welcoming the Chinese leader and celebrating the nations’ “friendship and unity.” During a two-day trip, his first visit to North Korea in seven years, Xi is expected to hold a summit with Kim. It will be their first meeting since September, when they met in Beijing after viewing a military parade alongside Russian President Vladimir Putin and other foreign leaders. No specific agenda has been mentioned. Foreign experts predict the meeting will have big ramifications on bilateral ties and beyond, as they both seek to fully restore their traditional alliance in the face of separate confrontations with the U.S.“A Chinese leader doesn’t just visit North Korea because a visit is due. Xi’s trip will have real implications for China-DPRK relations,” said Leif-Eric Easley, a professor at Ewha Womans University in Seoul, using the abbreviation for North Korea’s full name. Read More Sway over North Korea could help Xi’s dealings with USXi’s trip comes after his back-to-back summits with U.S. President Donald Trump and Putin in Beijing last month. Xi is expected to meet Trump again on a planned U.S. visit in September.Xi will try to demonstrate China’s “sway over the Korean Peninsula” and “a leadership role in entire Northeast Asia in the ages of strategic competitions with the U.S.,” said Kwak Gil Sup, the head of One Korea Center, a website specializing in North Korea affairs.China has long been North Korea’s economic lifeline and main diplomatic backer. Experts say China has avoided fully enforcing U.N. sanctions on North Korea and sent clandestine aid to help its impoverished neighbor stay afloat. This year marks 65 years since the two countries signed a mutual defense treaty. But there have been questions about their ties in recent years, with North Korea prioritizing cooperation with Russia by supplying troops and weapons to support its war against Ukraine. In return, North Korea has received economic and military assistance from Russia. Sign up for Morning Wire: Our flagship newsletter breaks down the biggest headlines of the day. Email address Sign up By checking this box, you agree to AP's Terms of Use and acknowledge that AP may collect and use your data pursuant to our Privacy Policy. Restoring an exclusive influence over North Korea would give Xi a leverage in dealings with Trump, who has repeatedly expressed his desire to restart diplomacy with Kim, experts say.“Implementing U.N. Security Council resolutions and enforcing sanctions do not appear to be priorities for China,” Easley said.In an article published on the North’s main Rodong Sinmun newspaper Monday, Xi said China and North Korea must boost strategic cooperation and work together to oppose “hegemonism and coercive politics” and pursue an orderly multipolar world. Kim needs Xi’s support for his push for nuclear stateXi would likely offer Kim economic aid packages such as shipments of rice and fertilizers, a resumption of Chinese group tourism to North Korea. and joint economic projects, analysts said. “North Korea can’t solely rely on Russia. It needs to align with China,” Kwak said.In a Monday editorial, the Rodong Sinmun newspaper called Xi “the most honored state guest,” saying Pyongyang’s streets “are filled with an atmosphere of friendship.” Xi could also refrain from pressing Kim on the issue of denuclearization of North Korea, and vaguely speak about peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula. That would be essential for Kim, who is desperate to win international recognition as a nuclear weapons state as a way to call for lifting of U.N. sanctions on North Korea. “Chinese officials have taken the position of not speaking publicly about denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula while still maintaining it as a long-term goal. Kim appears to want Xi to accept North Korea as a nuclear neighbor,” Easley said. After last month’s summit between Trump and Xi, the White House said the two leaders confirmed their shared goal to denuclearize North Korea. But China only said the leaders discussed the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula. On Sunday, Kim’s sister and senior official, Kim Yo Jong, dismissed as “false information” the U.S. readout of the Xi-Trump meeting.Last week, Kim unveiled a new plant to produce nuclear ingredients and vowed to bolster the country’s nuclear forces “at an exponential rate.” He also observed sea trials of a new naval destroyer and called for speeding up efforts to build a nuclear-armed navy. South Korean President Lee Jae Myung told reporters Monday that North Korea is producing enough nuclear ingredients annually for about 10-20 bombs and is close to perfecting intercontinental ballistic missile technology. Lee said the world must first focus on convincing North Korea to freeze its nuclear materials production and ICBM program as a short-term goal. On Sunday, Kim’s sister and senior official, Kim Yo Jong, echoed her brother, calling a U.S. push for the denuclearization of North Korea an “escapist and anachronistic dream.”Kim Jong Un has rebuffed U.S. and South Korean offers for talks and focused on enlarging and modernizing his nuclear arsenal since his high-stakes diplomacy with Trump collapsed in 2019. The North Korean leader said in September that he still had “good personal memories” of Trump but urged the U.S. to withdraw its demand for North Korea to denuclearize as a precondition for resuming diplomacy.Experts say Kim would eventually want arms reductions talks with the U.S. to win concessions in return for partially surrendering his nuclear weapons. __Associated Press writers Kim Tong-hyung in Seoul and E. Takeaways as Mets mount offensive to claim .500 road trip in win over Padres
The Mets finished their cross-country gauntlet on a high note. After a little more than two months of the 2026 season, the Mets are finished playing west of the Rocky Mountains. Four separate trips to San Francisco, Los Angeles, Anaheim and San Diego are now in the rearview mirror. They completed that grind in the first month of June as they grabbed a series victory with a 7-3 triumph over the Padres on Sunday afternoon at Petco Park."We've got to continue to win series," Carlos Mendoza told reporters. "It started 0-2 in Seattle and then we go back home .500. You take it. Today was huge bouncing back after a tough one (Saturday) night and that's what you want to see from the boys. They showed up today and set the tone and now enjoy the day and be ready for the homestand."After dropping the opening two games to the Mariners on the latest journey, the Mets claimed three of the last four games to get back to 29-36 before they return home for a three-game series with the Cardinals beginning on Tuesday at Citi Field. The Mets carry a little bit of momentum back to Flushing as winners of seven of their last 10 games. Here is what stood out from this most recent road trip:Carson Benge bringing the batThe Mets' seven runs matched their high for the road trip, and it started in the opening inning with Carson Benge. The club's rookie leadoff hitter opened the game with a single and scored a run in the top of the first inning and never looked back. Benge finished 5-for-5 with a solo home run, triple, three runs and two RBI,Benge was the Mets' first rookie to collect five hits since Pete Alonso did it back in August 2019."It was cool to see it. It's pretty impressive. Rockets pretty much everywhere" Mendoza said. "Using the middle of the field, staying short, stay on top of the baseball and the left-on-left homer, it was just pretty incredible. It's just good to see him continue to fight, continue to compete and just be himself."Since the beginning of May, Benge has raised his batting average from .189 to .265 and OPS from .525 to .733. He had three home runs, scored six runs and drove in five runs on the road trip."Today is nice. It's nice to get two hits, let alone five," Benge said. "Being able to do that is pretty special. Got the ball and everything. Being able to wash this off and go on to the next game as well is a big thing."Sean Manaea finding his laneWith Kodai Senga still enduring some shaky performances with Triple-A Syracuse and Jonah Tong back in the minor leagues, the Mets are going to rely on Sean Manaea to provide lengthy outings every time he takes the ball.Manaea's role is now bigger than it had been earlier in the season when a one-inning was not unusual. On Sunday behind Huascar Brazoban, Manaea allowed two earned runs on four hits and one walk in four innings to secure his first victory of the season. The lone Padres damage off Manaea came when Freddy Fermin tagged a first-pitch fastball over the heart of a plate for a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning to make it 4-2."He competed. I think he had to pitch today, which was good to see with a heavy righty lineup. For him to use the cutter, to use the changeup, got swing and misses with the fastball. Yeah, Fermin got him with the fastball there but not an easy lineup to navigate, and I thought he did a really good job."The lefty veteran has now allowed two earned runs or fewer in three innings or more in his last five outings. He was aided by a nifty diving catch by MJ Melendez to prevent a run from possibly scoring in the second inning, but has lowered his ERA from 6.26 to 5.02 over that stretch."It was OK. The four-pitch walk's not good," Manaea said. "The first-pitch fastball to Fermin, I wish I got that back."Jared Young forcing a first base platoonSince returning from a torn meniscus back on May 26, Jared Young has played his way into more playing time. On the road trip, Young was featured in the lineup in all six games, going 6-for-22 (.273) with two home runs, four RBI and two runs. The lefty-hitting Young spent five of those six games at first base after being used predominantly as a designated hitter since returning. Those at-bats came at the expense of Mark Vientos, who is slashing .214/.248/.370 in 55 games this season. Vientos' struggles are heightened against right-handed pitching where he has a .562 OPS, compared to a .723 OPS against lefties. That has given Young a clear lane to playing time since his return. He is slashing .291/.375/.509 in 22 games this season.Bo Bichette heating upOne of the most encouraging signs of the road trip might be the resurgence of Bo Bichette. The Mets infielder began by going 0-for-7 in the first two games against the Mariners before breaking out for his first four-hit game of the season in the finale. In the final four games, Bichette was 9-for-16 with two runs and four RBI. He doubled and scored a run on Sunday.Bichette looked no worse for the wear in the finale after he made a big diving stop in the fifth inning on Saturday, appearing to jam his left shoulder but remaining in the game. The 28-year-old has raised his batting average 15 points to .234 since the start of June while his .615 OPS is his highest mark since April 11.This article originally appeared on NorthJersey.com: Takeaways as Mets mount offensive to claim .500 road trip in win over Padres

Man United signing Ederson to join Brazil’s World Cup squadManchester United’s official move to sign Atalanta midfielder Ederson could be delayed after his late call-up for the 2026 World Cup.Ederson has been included in the Brazil squad for the tournament after an injury to Roma right-back Wesley. The 26-year-old had been overlooked for the initial squad, but will now link up with the Selecao in North America. Denmark doctor releases statement after Eriksen collapse
Denmark doctor releases statement after Eriksen collapseMorton Boesen, the doctor of the Denmark national team, has said Christian Eriksen is ‘doing well’ after his frightening collapse on the pitch against Ukraine. The former Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United midfielder collapsed during the friendly fixture, but was conscious when his left the pitch. The incident follows the cardiac arrest suffered by Eriksen during a European Championship match in 2021.Players from both teams formed a ring around Eriksen before he was eventually able to walk from the pitch. The match was abandoned following the incident.Eriksen resumed his playing career after his 2021 cardiac arrest after being fitted with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) in his chest, which can reset the heart. In a statement, Boesen said Eriksen’s ICD worked as it should following the scare of a second collapse.“The pacemaker responded as it should … He will now undergo further examinations at the hospital to determine what caused the incident. We are in ongoing contact with him and the doctors at the hospital. But Christian is doing well, and he asked me to send his regards to all the players and tell them that he was okay.”Read – Five players we’re gutted are missing the 2026 World CupSee more – FIFA World Cup: The top goalscorers in World Cup historyFollow the Football Faithful on Social Media:Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | YouTube | TikTok

Plenty of tickets still available for Texans-Jaguars game at London's Wembley Stadium
The NFL likes to boast about its growing popularity overseas, but there's at least one sign that foreign fans are deciding NFL tickets aren't worth the price.Tickets to the October 18 Texans-Jaguars game at London's Wembley Stadium are not selling well. General tickets have been on sale since May 29, and it remains easy on ticket sites to find large blocks of tickets available. Searching ticket sites, fans can find blocks of 12 seats together in many sections of the stadium. The popular NFL UK Tickets social media account, which tracks ticket availability for NFL London games and is not affiliated with the league, posted a seating map showing many tickets remain unsold."Can't actually believe how badly the Texans v Jaguars game has sold. Over a week of the general sale and this is a snap shot of what the stadium looks like. Gone are the days of selling out the first day, people voting with their feet and staying away due to price," NFL UK Tickets posted.Replies to that post show many UK-based fans saying the NFL has made tickets too expensive, with some saying it's cheaper to fly to the United States to see an NFL game than to buy tickets in their own home country. The NFL will play a record nine international games this year and plans even more next year, with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell suggesting that the league may eventually play 16 games overseas, with every team leaving the country once. Poor ticket sales may be the only thing that could slow down the NFL's aggressive international plans.

Pio delivers again as his goal secures victory for Italy
Pio delivers again as his goal secures victory for ItalyAnother busy day of international friendlies saw two Inter players in action: Pio Esposito, who was once again the match-winner for Italy, and Petar Sucic, who featured in Croatia’s victory over Slovenia.Italy took on Greece at the Pankritio Stadium in Heraklion, in the second and final friendly of the international window. The Azzurri recorded another win, with the same scoreline and the same goalscorer as in their victory over Luxembourg a few days earlier. The game ended 1-0 thanks to another goal from Pio Esposito. The Inter striker was handed another start by Silvio Baldini and made the difference in Crete, scoring the only goal of the game after 18 minutes. Esposito controlled a cross from the left by Ekhator inside the box before calmly finishing with his right foot. It was his second goal in as many matches and his fifth in nine appearances for Italy. The goal also saw Esposito become just the fourth player in the national team's history to score in each of his first three starts, joining Omar Sivori (1961), Riccardo Carapellese (1947–48) and Annibale Frossi (1936). Esposito stayed on until the 87th minute before making way for Francesco Camarda.Petar Sucic's Croatia also signed off their World Cup preparations with a win, beating Slovenia 2-1 in their final friendly before the tournament. The match, played at the Gradski Stadion Varazdin, was decided deep into stoppage time when Mario Pasalic struck the winner. Croatia had taken the lead in the 51st minute through Luka Modric, before Sporar equalised in the 83rd minute. Sucic played the entire second half after head coach Dalic brought him on at half-time to replace Kovacic. Croatia therefore head into the World Cup on the back of a victory. The Balkan side will travel to North America in the coming days before opening their campaign on 17 June against England in Arlington. And so it begins: Let’s see if Real Madrid’s Florentino Pérez can make good on his blockbuster promise
MADRID, SPAIN - MAY 27: Florentino Perez attends during his presentation of his candidacy for the presidency of Real Madrid at the Melia Castilla Hotel on May 27, 2026, in Madrid, Spain. (Photo By Angel Perez Meca/Europa Press via Getty Images) | Europa Press via Getty Images The Real Madrid election is over and Florentino Pérez has won the club’s presidency. Last week, Pérez made big news by talking about pushing the club to make a €150 million transfer to bring back the team’s winning ways. While the executive denied that player he was talking about bringing in was Bayern Munich star Michael Olise, no less than three different outlets said that Pérez was trying to throw everyone off his scent and did, indeed, actually want Olise: 🚨⚪️ BREAKING: Florentino Pérez, re-elected as Real Madrid president.“It’s a beautiful day for me and for all Madridistas”. pic.twitter.com/g240lMNTqj— Fabrizio Romano (@FabrizioRomano) June 7, 2026Now, Pérez is back in power and Real Madrid fans will be expecting him to live up to his promise. Some other names that were bandied about were the Paris Saint-Germain midfield duo of Vitinha and João Neves, along with Manchester City star striker Erling Haaland. Just like Bayern Munich, PSG and Manchester City scoffed at the notion of losing their respective star players. Will Pérez make good on his promise or leave fans wondering if the right man was elected? Disney World helps get England defender Burn ready for the World Cup
Dan Burn credits a pre-tournament trip to Disney for helping him acclimatize to the heat ahead of the ride of his life at the World Cup.The 34-year-old has enjoyed a fairytale rise having been pushing trollies at a supermarket and playing for semi-professional Darlington at the start of a career that now sees him star for boyhood club Newcastle.Thomas Tuchel’s appointment as England boss added another special chapter to that story after handing the centre-back a maiden call-up in March 2025 and then making him part of his World Cup squad. The travel, heat and humidity in North America could make the tournament somewhat of a roller-coaster but a family trip to Orlando's Disney World helped him adapt to the conditions before their warm weather camp began in Florida last Monday.Burn said of Saturday’s 1-0 friendly win against New Zealand in sweltering Tampa: “It doesn’t feel like the World Cup yet, but coming in and seeing the fans, the hype of it all and getting excited about it, so, yeah, I was happy with how it went.“I think we dealt with the heat pretty well, got a win and a clean sheet. We can build on that.“I didn’t notice (the heat) that much, if I am being honest. I have been here a week before, I did Disney with the kids because I wanted to get a bit of a head start.“Honestly, I think that helped. Don’t get us wrong, it wasn’t like a Saturday afternoon in Newcastle, but I felt a lot better than I was expecting to.”Burn loved his time with the family at Disney and was among several players to get a head-start by travelling to the US early.“I wanted to do that because I am not used to the heat as much,” the towering defender said. “About half the squad did that and half the squad didn’t, but I feel better for it.”England face Costa Rica in a final friendly in Orlando on Wednesday before their World Cup opener against Croatia on June 17 in Texas.

‘Don't expect the world from Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’: Sourav Ganguly urges patience with 15-year-old prodigy
NEW DELHI: As Vaibhav Sooryavanshi stands on the verge of becoming the youngest player to represent India, former captain Sourav Ganguly has issued a passionate appeal for patience, urging fans and experts not to burden the teenage sensation with unrealistic expectations. The 15-year-old batting prodigy, who lit up IPL 2026 with a record-breaking campaign, has earned his maiden India call-up for the T20I tours of Ireland and England and the Asian Games in Japan.Ganguly, however, believes the youngster must be given time to adapt to the challenges of international cricket.“I think we should let him be, he's just 15-year-old and I don't think he'll bother too much about pressure and that's what we get to see him in the IPL,” Ganguly told PTI.The former India captain acknowledged that the conditions awaiting Sooryavanshi overseas would be vastly different from what he experienced during the IPL.“Obviously, playing for India is different and he will be touring where the wickets will be a little different,” Ganguly said.“It will seam and there will be a bit more bounce and a bit more movement with the new ball, so the game is a bit different, but I think he's got enormous talent,” he added.Ganguly then made a dramatic appeal, asking everyone around Indian cricket to give the youngster room to grow.“… so just let him be, don't expect the world from him straightaway. Just allow him to settle down because you know he's got a lot of talent like many others in India,” Ganguly said.BCCI steps in to make transition easierIn a move aimed at easing the teenager into the senior setup, the BCCI has decided to allow Sooryavanshi's parents to accompany him on the tours of Ireland and England, with the board bearing all expenses.BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said the decision was taken to ensure that the youngster remains comfortable as he enters unfamiliar surroundings."As he is a child, we have decided to allow his parents to accompany him to Ireland and England, so that they can be with him and help him settle in the new environment. The Board will cover all their expenses," Saikia told Sportstar.Saikia revealed that Sooryavanshi's father, Sanjeev, had already travelled to Sri Lanka to be with his son, who is currently with the India A side in Dambulla. The BCCI secretary stressed that the board had a responsibility to ensure that the 15-year-old did not feel isolated in the senior dressing room.“It’s because otherwise he was always traveling with his under-19, junior boys or sub-junior boys team. It meant that he was in the comfort zone. But now he will be in the adult world and we want to make him comfortable, as he is a 15-year-old kid,” Saikia said. 131581047A meteoric riseSooryavanshi's ascent has been extraordinary. Fresh from helping India win the Under-19 World Cup, the Rajasthan Royals batter dominated IPL 2026, scoring 776 runs to claim the Orange Cap.He also swept multiple honours, including the Emerging Player award, Most Valuable Player award, best strike rate and the record for most sixes in a single IPL season.Chief selector Ajit Agarkar summed up the teenager's rise perfectly.“We've got high hopes of him, and I think he just has picked himself really,” Agarkar had said. For now, though, Ganguly's message remains clear: India may have found a generational talent, but the biggest challenge will be resisting the temptation to expect greatness overnight.

Scotland will end their 28-year wait to play in a men’s World Cup when the Tartan Army face Haiti in their opening match of the tournament. Steve Clarke’s side may have played at back-to-back European Championships but their return to the international stage has been long awaited. And, like in 1998, they will play Brazil and Morocco in Group C of the tournament bidding to advance to the knockout stages for the first time. First, though, is an opening clash with Haiti in Boston, with a win potentially enough to advance as one of the best-ranked third-place teams. Indeed, Scotland’s last win at a major men’s tournament was against Switzerland at Euro 96, now 30 years ago. When is Scotland’s first game at World Cup 2026? Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes nears Al-Hilal switch
Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes nears Al-Hilal switchLiverpool sporting director Richard Hughes is nearing a move to Saudi Pro League club Al-Hilal, as per a report from Sacha Tavolieri. Hughes is currently managing Liverpool’s transfer window. His continued involvement at the Merseyside club was also evident with the recent managerial change. He brought in former AFC Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola following the decision to part ways with Arne Slot. Tavolieri understands that talks between Hughes and Al-Hilal are at an advanced stage. However, the Franco-Belgian journalist adds that Hughes is not expected to depart Liverpool immediately. Instead, the Gulf State club are expected to let him work with his current club during the current transfer window before a move at the end of the summer, once the window closes. Hughes, the former Technical Director at Bournemouth, joined the Premier League giants back in June 2024, however, his time on Merseyside could come to an end in the coming months, with a move to Saudi Arabia potentially impending. Six major rule changes that will define World Cup 2026
The controversial practice of players going over to the touchline to receive tactical advice from coaches when goalkeepers are down injured will be banned at this summer’s World Cup.In one of six major rule changes ahead of the tournament revealed by Fifa referees’ chief Pierluigi Collina, the so-called ‘tactical timeout’ where a goalkeeper will strategically go to the ground to be treated by physios, while their outfield team-mates rush over to the coach in order to receive instruction, has now been forbidden by the International Football Association Board (Ifab). The ‘tactical timeout’ – where, once the tactical instruction has been received, the keeper simply gets up to play on – has become a trope across the world, with one of the most high-profile examples coming in the Premier League in November when Leeds boss Daniel Farke accused Manchester City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma of feigning injury to “bend the rules” and break up play.Gianluigi Donnarumma drew the ire of Leeds boss Daniel Farke in November (Getty)Leagues have been invited to hold a series of trails throughout the 2026-27 campaign to find a solution, while the women’s professional league in the United States, the NWSL, introduced its own temporary measure earlier this year, which will be replicated at the World Cup.If a goalkeeper is injured, the players of both teams must stay where they are or gather in the centre circle, not being permitted to go to the touchline. The officials will be responsible for enforcing the rule but Collina said there will be no yellow cards or disciplinary action for players who do try to go over and speak to the coach. However, all nations will be aware of the rules.“We had a workshop with all the coaches of all the 48 teams and we told them that referees will be proactive,” explained Collina. “They will not allow the two teams to go to the benches when a goalkeeper is lying on the ground injured.“The goalkeeper has the right to be injured, but the players do not have the right to leave the field of play to have a sort of timeout with their respective coaches.”Pierluigi Collina explained the rule changes made by Ifab for the World Cup (PA)Arguably, this measure only tackles part of the problem, as it will not stop goalkeepers going down simply to break up the momentum of the other team. The relevance at the World Cup is up for debate, given that there will be a three-minute hydration break in each half anyway due to the hot weather, creating a natural timeout for coaches. “It’s quite weird that there really is only the referee, the physio and the goalkeeper on the field play,” added Collina. “All the other players leave the pitch, and it is not good.”There will be another five law changes, primarily aiming to speed up play and reduce time-wasting from teams and Collina is hopeful they will help limit the amount of stoppage time, which reached remarkable levels in 2022. They are:Throw-in countdown (five seconds): If a player deliberately delays the restart of play, the throw can be given to the opposition.Goal-kick countdown (five seconds): Also applies to deliberate attempts to run down the clock and can result in a corner being awarded.Time-limited substitutions (10 seconds): Substituted players have 10 seconds to leave the field at the nearest point. If they fail to do so, the substitute cannot enter the field for at least one minute and the team must continue with 10 players.Off-field treatment (one minute): Players who are treated by the physio must stay off the field for 60 seconds. There are some exceptions, including for goalkeepers, injuries and if the opponent is booked or sent off.Players covering their mouths: Any player covering their mouth in a confrontational situation with an opponent may be sanctioned with a red card. This is in light of the controversy surrounding Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni and Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr in a Champions League game in February. Prestianni covered his mouth during a confrontation with Vini Jr, who accused him of racist abuse. This was unable to be proven but Prestianni received a six-game ban from Uefa for homophobic conduct. “If the conversation is friendly, they can continue to do it without any problem,” Collina explained. “When the conversation is confrontational, covering the mouth means that you are doing something very wrong, potentially, and the sanction is the red card.”Benfica's Gianluca Prestianni covered his mouth when speaking to Vinicius Jr earlier this season, sparking controversy (AFP/Getty)How will VAR be different? The VAR protocols have also been tweaked for the tournament, with video assistant referees now having new powers to intervene if fouls are committed immediately before the ball is in play at set-pieces. The measures will allow VAR to step in if a clear foul committed by the attacking team before the ball is in play leads to a direct impact on a goal, penalty kick or disciplinary sanction. In a statement, Ifab said: “The Ifa has approved a clarification to the video assistant referee (VAR) protocol for use at the 2026 Fifa World Cup regarding clear offences committed by the attacking team before the ball is in play at a corner kick or free kick that have a direct impact on a goal, penalty kick, or disciplinary sanction.“If the offence meets the criteria set out in the clarification, the VAR will recommend an on-field review, following which, if the referee determines that an offence occurred before the ball was in play, the appropriate disciplinary action will be taken and the corner kick or free kick will be retaken.”

How Waynedale's Anna Pittman finished as state runner-up in pole vault
COLUMBUS — You know that saying "If at first you don't succeed, try try again."Well, you could very much apply that to Waynedale's Anna Pittman, as she was competing in last Thursday's pole vault event during the OHSAA Division IV state track and field meet in Columbus at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. After clearing her first three vaults smoothly, Pittman then got over 11 feet 4 inches. Now here comes the try try again part folks.Pittman, who was the top-seeded vaulter coming in at 11-8 (her personal best), had 11-8 sitting in front of her on her fifth attempt of the afternoon. She missed. On her second attempt, Pittman knocked over the pole again. With it getting down to the waning stages of the event, she had one more go at clearing 11-8 to stay in the competition. Then this happened.More: Orrville's Mark Lorson wins Div. III state high jump titleWaynedale's Anna Pittman clears 11-8 on her third attempt in Div. IV pole vault. Heading for 12-0 now. #OHSAA@WaynedaleSportspic.twitter.com/A5WvpKdgTZ— James Simpson II (@JamesSimpsonII) June 4, 2026She cleared it and stayed in the competition."At regionals, that was my first time making 11-8. I was like, 'Oh my gosh. This is my PR,' said Pittman, after the pole vault event had concluded. "The third attempt for that I was freaking out. I'm not going to lie. I took a deep breath and I was like, 'This is it. This could be it.' So, I might as well give it my all. I did that. I made it over. I was like, 'Holy crap. There's no way.' I was just hyped up."Still, the senior wasn't through having to get through a tricky situation.Enter Part 2 of try try again. With four competitors remaining, 12-0 was the next bar to clear.Pittman's first attempt failed. She then missed her second attempt. Once again, she faced another "Now of Never" moment to stay in the competition on her third try. There she goes again.Waynedale's Anna Pittman clears 12-0. Three left in Div. IV girls pole vault. Moving up to 12-4 now. #OHSAA@WaynedaleSportspic.twitter.com/NlCnJhIEUY— James Simpson II (@JamesSimpsonII) June 4, 202612-0 successful."Then I got to 12 feet," said Pittman, with excitement. "My two attempts were like, 'Ugh.' I just had to calm down and when I cleared that, all of my nerves went away. That was the first time I made 12 obviously. It was such a relief to get that. That's been my goal the entire season."With three competitors left, the bar was raised to 12-4. She met the challenge and cleared it on the first attempt. A new PR (personal record) was set. With only Pittman and Coldwater junior Ava Schmitmeyer left, 12-8 was the next target.Schmitmeyer cleared her first attempt at 12-8 first, then Pittman was up. Pittman ended up unsuccessful in her three attempts. Schmitmeyer was your new Division IV state champion, with Pittman earning silver with a state runner-up finish."12-4. I was honestly, I didn't know what I was expecting. At that point, I was just vaulting for fun," Pittman said. "I think because I wasn't in my head and vaulting just for fun that definitely helped me get through it. 12-8 was definitely very intimidating. But it's alright."Alright it is. As the top seed, Pittman did say she felt some pressure going into her most prominent event and felt more equipped than ever compared to the last two state track meets in the pole vault where she didn't medal (top eight get on the podium)."I was a little bit more prepared this year," said Pittman, who was also a Division IV regional qualifier in both the 100m and 300m hurdles. "I've been to state in the past but I've never been really prepared. This year, I finally felt like I was able to handle my emotions better. It's definitely been a big change this year. I finally started getting it."Pittman says her senior season is the best form she's been in as a pole vaulter in her four years and the results point to that.Wayne County Athletic League (WCAL) champion. Division IV district and regional champion. Division IV state runner-up. And she's leaving with a new PR of 12-4.As good of a pole vaulter Pittman is, she credited the other four sports she's played in high school in football (kicker in 2025), soccer (forward), cross country and swimming (three-time Div. II state qualifier in 50 freestyle from 2024-2026; 2026 state qualifier in 100 freestyle) as helping her in some fashion with her pole vaulting."I feel like they keep me in shape. It makes me think about what I'm doing more. The only reason I do so many sports is because I get bored really fast," said Pittman, who's planning on going into the Army National Guard and attending Ashland University after high school in the next few years. "I have a really bad problem with staying still. I need to be doing something."For Pittman, it's the fun of pole vaulting that has kept her going."I'm always happy to be here," she said. "My goal throughout the season is just to make it to state and let whatever happens after happens. I'm just trying to have fun with it."jamessimpson@gannett.comTwitter/X: @JamesSimpson IIThis article originally appeared on The Daily Record: How Waynedale's Anna Pittman fought to state pole vault runner-up

Readers sold on Karen Weekly, not so sure about my 1983 laptop computer | Adams
My inbox reflects the growing popularity of softball. Most of my literary contributors responded to a post-NCAA Tournament column on Lady Vols coach Karen Weekly. But I also received numerous emails regarding my 1983 laptop computer.Doug writes: Good article regarding Karen Weekly and other highly successful coaches who have not won championships or didn't until late in their careers. One nitpick buried deep in that particular article: You said a story you were researching for the 82-83 NCAA Basketball Tournament was "snatched from your laptop" before you finished it. I wondered if you had a rich uncle in the tech industry in 1982 as laptops were not commonplace until much later? My response: Both of my uncles were long dead by then, and neither was technologically inclined. But I started writing on a computer in the late 1970s.I composed press box columns in Jackson, MS, on something called a Teleram. It was a suitcase-size computer that weighed about 30 pounds but had a tiny screen.I remember toting a Teleram up the steps of Mississippi Memorial Stadium, which didn't have a press box elevator at the time. The Teleram was soon replaced by Radio Shack’s Trash 80, which had a bigger screen and weighed about 20 pounds less.Jack writes: I enjoyed your Karen Weekly column, as I do so many of your columns. You've still got it, old man. I was especially impressed, though, that you had a laptop at that 1983 game in The Pit. Trash 80 portables came out that year, but we at The Albuquerque Tribune were not so quick to invest in those high-tech marvels. And I don't think we tried any of the earlier suitcase computers, though I may be misremembering. My response: Thanks for the reminder that I am well into the winter of my life. I get a lot of emails like that, some of which begin: “You’re the only person I know who might remember this.”And yes, Shemp − in response to your email − I do remember Kentucky’s Roger Bird being on the cover of Street & Smith’s preseason football yearbook in 1965.Hal writes: I am an avid reader of your articles. Are you sure that you had a laptop when NC State beat Houston? It would’ve been hard to carry around. Thanks for the good work you do. Always interesting. My response: As I mentioned, the Trash 80 was a huge improvement for event coverage. It also weighed less than my current laptop and was an easy carry-on item for air travel.Maybe, too easy.I once left my Trash 80 in a gift shop at JFK Airport after covering a U.S. Open for a Jacksonville, Florida, newspaper. Fortunately, air travel was more efficient back then.My computer arrived in Jacksonville just a few hours after I did.William writes: I was thankful for your vote of confidence for Karen Weekly, even if it wasn't particularly enthusiastic. While I know that in sports we recognize championships as ends in themselves, I believe that what Karen has done for UT in the past 20+ years deserves more than the "she can't win the big one" label.I remember when people said the same thing about Pat Summit, given her 1977 team took third at the AIAW championships, and her teams lost a number of games in the finals in the next several seasons. It wasn't until 1987 that she broke through, and even after that, she took a lot of criticism when her teams lost in the Final Four.My response: Based on how Weekly and her staff are recruiting − and how many starters could return next season − the Lady Vols might be even better in 2027.Colorado Mark: With your intimate knowledge of Louisiana culture and Lane Kiffin's close proximity to NOLA, do you think Kiff − given his lustful desire to win a Natty − would employ the use of Voodoo Dolls of opposing coaches and players to cause chaos and confusion for those opposing teams entering Tiger Stadium? My response: Of course, he would. That’s probably why he brought back South Louisiana native Ed Orgeron as an assistant.Surely, Orgeron has the number of an accomplished voodoo practitioner.I’m not so well connected but did know a spiritualist who could conjure up a curse or two for the right price. She worked her magic on opponents of the New Orleans Saints and Tampa Bay Bucs on separate occasions. The curses often didn't work, reminding me that – in the football realm − blocking and tackling invariably will overcome voodoo.Terry writes: Regarding the upcoming Neyland Entertainment District, if the acronym NED is to be used like the TBA acronym, I think the name should be quickly changed. Competitors and recruiting coordinators will use that against us, I fear. Any reference with the letters ED will reflect us as weak and sluggish.ADAMS: My response to preseason football magazine assessment of Josh Heupel My response: I never thought of that. But we all have different experiences that shape our thoughts.Since Tennessee athletic director Danny White is the creative force behind the project, how about: Danny’s Dollar Store?John Adams is a senior columnist. He may be reached at 865-342-6284 or john.adams@knoxnews.com.This article originally appeared on Knoxville News Sentinel: Readers sold on Karen Weekly, but not so sure about my 1983 laptop computer

Arsenal star named vice captain of England
Arsenal star named vice captain of EnglandThe England manager says Rice is part of his core group, with Arsenal’s four internationals now in camp before the final World Cup warm-up match against Costa Rica.Photo by Alex Pantling/Getty ImagesDeclan Rice has been named England vice-captain by Thomas Tuchel, with the Arsenal midfielder now only behind Harry Kane in the national team’s leadership group. The decision is another significant marker of Rice’s standing under the England manager, who views him as part of a small group of essential players in his World Cup plans.Kane remains captain and a guaranteed starter, but Tuchel has now confirmed that Rice is his No 2, even if he appeared unsure whether the role had been formally communicated. When asked who will be his vice-captain, Tuchel said: “Declan is.”When asked if Rice knows that, Tuchel smiled: “That’s a good question. I was thinking about it, whether it is an official thing or not.“But I think we had this talk when Harry was not in camp with us. We started with Ollie Watkins and Declan was captain. That was where I told him.”Photo by Ryan Pierse/Getty ImagesThat came in a friendly against Wales last year, when Rice captained England. With Kane turning 33 next month, Tuchel is also looking beyond the immediate tournament, and Rice appears to be at the front of the queue when England eventually need a new captain. The news comes as Arsenal’s England internationals have finally joined up with the squad at their training base in West Palm Beach.Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze and Noni Madueke have arrived alongside Rice, giving Tuchel a full squad before England’s final pre-World Cup friendly against Costa Rica on Wednesday evening.England were flat in their opening warm-up match, scraping a 1-0 win over New Zealand on Saturday, and the Arsenal contingent now have a tight turnaround before being considered for involvement against Costa Rica.Tuchel has said he is not yet certain how much the four Arsenal players will feature.Photo by Richard Pelham/Getty ImagesSaka and Rice are expected to be starters at the World Cup, while Madueke is likely to provide cover and rotation behind Saka. Eze is also expected to begin as a rotation option, although strong performances could give him a chance to push for a place in the starting side.England begin their World Cup group campaign against Croatia on June 17, before facing Ghana on June 23 and Panama on June 27.

French Open takeaways: The best match, biggest upset, and abiding memories from Roland Garros
Welcome back to the Monday Tennis Briefing, where The Athletic will explain the stories behind the stories from the past week on court. This week, a chaotic French Open ended with two singles finals that went to script. In the women’s one, Mirra Andreeva won her maiden Grand Slam title at 19, ending Maja Chwalińska’s storybook run with a controlled, 6-3, 6-2 win. In the men’s edition, No. 2 seed Alexander Zverev defeated No. 10 seed Flavio Cobolli. The 29-year-old German lifted his first Grand Slam trophy in his fourth major final, coming out on top with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-1 win. Here, Ava Wallace, Charlie Eccleshare, Charlotte Harpur and Matthew Futterman present their takeaways from the second Grand Slam of 2026, from the best matches and biggest upsets to their abiding memories of Roland Garros 2026.If you’d like to follow our fantastic tennis coverage, click here.Best match?Ava Wallace: João Fonseca’s 4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, 7-5 win over Novak Djokovic had a little bit of everything. Including drop shots.Charlie Eccleshare: A match I watched from start to finish and wrote countless different drafts about, it has to be 19-year-old Brazilian Fonseca’s five-set win over Djokovic, a 24-time Grand Slam champion 20 years his senior.Fonseca has had to carry the burden of being hailed as the Next Big Thing for a year and a half, and this felt like the moment he showed the wider world why. The fearless forehands to reel Djokovic in from two sets up, the ability to feed off a crowd that was full of passionate Brazilians, and then the nerve at the very end to hit three straight aces to go from break point down to victory. There were shades of a 19-year-old Roger Federer beating Pete Sampras, at the time the most decorated male player in history, at Wimbledon in 2001.Charlotte Harpur: Fonseca vs Djokovic. In the first two sets, Djokovic’s shot selection, execution and athleticism showed why he is one of the greatest players of all time. The 39-year-old pulled the Brazilian, an opponent practically half his age, from side to side, forwards and backwards, as if he had him on a string, crafting points like a magician. But just when Djokovic looked like the puppet master, Fonseca pulled out his own tricks. He hit the lines, found clutch drop shots and hit three consecutive sledgehammer aces to become only the second person ever to beat Djokovic from two sets down.Matthew Futterman: Fonseca vs Djokovic. It seemed so impossible that Fonseca could manage a comeback from two sets down, given that only one player had done it against Djokovic before. Djokovic even had an early break in the fifth set. Surely it was over.It was — for Djokovic. He just didn’t know it yet.Favorite match?Wallace: The Maja Chwalińska vs. Diana Shnaider women’s semifinal, which the qualifier and world No. 114 won 7-6(4) 6-4, was an absolute treat. It was so fun to watch the world No. 114’s anticipation, shotmaking and defensive capabilities slowly squeeze the will out of her seeded opponent — and Shnaider did a good job holding her own. Both players were so creative with their tennis and prepared for the moment, though they had every right to be intimidated. The fantastic atmosphere, thanks in large part to the hordes of Polish fans supporting Chwalińska on Court Philippe-Chatrier, made this a delight.Eccleshare: I won’t forget the scenes on Court Suzanne-Lenglen during French wild card Moïse Kouame’s thrilling five-set win over Adolfo Daniel Vallejo of Paraguay.Kouame is only 17, but the new French tennis hero has an understanding of point construction and when to pull the trigger that belies his young age.He also knows when to work a crowd, and winning the match’s first set was such a moment, as Kouame put his finger to his ear and then went for the full “lawnmower” celebration associated with expressive former greats such as Rafael Nadal.Kouame ended up winning the match in extraordinary style. He gave up a two-set lead, but then came back from 5-2 down in the decider to pinch it in a tiebreak. The roar when it was all over was deafening, even by the standards of one of the most raucous courts in tennis. It was clear to everyone that a star had been born.Harpur: That roar of the French crowd hit me to my core and my arms were covered in goosebumps. French teenager Kouame had just defeated Vallejo 10-8 in a fifth-set tiebreak to progress to the third round, and Court Suzanne-Lenglen erupted. The fans had just witnessed the youngest player to reach that stage of a men’s singles Grand Slam since Nadal in 2003 at Wimbledon. The match had everything: tension and jeopardy, skill and endurance and fervent fans willing an exhausted body over the line. Kouame’s shot selection was supreme, none more so than when he serve-and-volleyed on match point.Futterman: Chwalińska’s deconstruction of Shnaider in the women’s semifinals. It was such an exquisite filleting. She seemed so in control of a seemingly superior player. One woman playing checkers. The other playing chess.Favorite quote?Wallace: “No thoughts, no emotions. Just want to quit tennis right now, but we’ll see. We’ll see in a few days,” by world No. 1 and women’s title favorite Aryna Sabalenka.Who hasn’t been there? Sabalenka’s news conference after losing 3-6, 7-5, 6-0 to Shnaider in the quarterfinals was honest and relatable in so many ways. She showed up in front of a room full of reporters ready to talk about her emotions, while acknowledging she was still processing the loss herself, with frankness and humor. She didn’t handle her news conference well after losing to Coco Gauff in the final last year. This year, she was much more gracious to her opponent.Eccleshare: “I almost s––t on my pants,” by Flavio Cobolli. After reaching the fourth round of a women’s event that had suddenly opened up, American No. 19 women’s seed Madison Keys summed up the nervousness of a men’s draw without Carlos Alcaraz (who missed the tournament through injury), Jannik Sinner and Djokovic by saying that “their anxiety is slowly seeping into everyone’s lives”.A couple of days later, Cobolli went a step further, saying what he did after throwing away a 5-1 fourth-set lead, before ultimately winning, against Zachary Svajda of the United States.Harpur: Chwalińska, on taking a break from professional sport to manage a period of depression.“I was struggling a lot. I pushed at the beginning. I thought that I just needed to stay very strong, tough, and just keep practicing. But then I just couldn’t get out of bed anymore. I was just lifeless, to be honest,” she said in a news conference.“I knew that I needed to take a break, because otherwise I’m just not able to live. I didn’t know if I was going to come back or not. After months, I decided to come back. I needed to figure a few things (out) in my head. I came back. I’m happy that I did (smiling).”Futterman: “I almost s––t on my pants,” from Cobolli.Best player not to reach the quarterfinalsWallace: Setting aside Sinner, I’ll say Gauff. The defending champion said she let up when she had momentum in her 4-6, 7-6(1), 6-4 third-round match against Austria’s No. 28 seed Anastasia Potapova, instead of stepping on the gas. Gauff was playing as well as anyone entering the French Open and had a real shot at defending her title. Instead, she left with a frustrating loss — which always feels heavier in Paris for her because opportunity for redemption seems far off. Gauff doesn’t love the grass-court swing.Eccleshare: It has to be Sinner, after heat, seemingly the Italian’s Kryptonite, and illness helped lead him to a painful 3-6, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1, 6-1 defeat to Argentina’s Juan Manuel Cerúndolo in the second round. It was a simultaneously shocking and also foreseeable way for Sinner to exit. He led 6-3, 6-2, 5-2 on his own serve, then won two more games all match.Harpur: Sinner. The world No. 1 came into this French Open in imperious form. He was on a 30-match winning streak and had won his last five tournaments. Then came illness on a boiling-hot day, which left him dizzy and depleted of energy. “It was nothing against the heat, nothing against the weather,” he said. “It was just me today, but it happens.”Futterman: Sinner. No Alcaraz to worry about. A career Grand Slam within reach. Oy.Worst prediction?Wallace: Here, I thought we wouldn’t see a women’s match scheduled at night at the French Open! Joke’s on me! Two four-time Grand Slam champions and world No. 1s, Sabalenka and Naomi Osaka, played one of the 11 night sessions.Eccleshare: That Sinner and Sabalenka would win the singles titles.Harpur: “Once you have one or two big shocks, that’s it, no more.” How wrong was I? There was something in the water that just spread throughout the tournament.Futterman: The afternoon Sinner lost, I went on film and said the only other player worth paying attention to was Djokovic. He lost the next day.Biggest letdown?Wallace: It was a minor bummer that Gaël Monfils’ final stand at the French Open against Hugo Gaston wasn’t a better match, and I was sad to see the Kouame phenomenon finally end, because of how much fun it was watching French fans fall in love with him. But my expectations both for Monfils and Kouame weren’t sky-high to begin with, so I can’t call them big letdowns. I was truly let down by the overabundance of five-set matches (there were 32), many of which were attritional battles rather than entertaining shows. Some of them were fun but way too many were way too long.Eccleshare: How the volume of five-set epics eventually, and inevitably, caught up with the men’s event. It was particularly sad to see Italy’s Matteo Berrettini, so bedeviled by injury over the past few years, have to pull out hurt in the second set of his quarterfinal against compatriot Matteo Arnaldi. And then Arnaldi, who had spent almost 20 hours competing to reach the semifinals, couldn’t even take the court for his match against Cobolli because he was laid low by a stomach virus.Harpur: Following his second-round defeat against Kouame, Paraguayan Vallejo said their match needed to be “umpired by a man”.“It’s very difficult for a woman to do it,” he said during an interview with Clay. “It has to be refereed by a man, because it’s a very demanding crowd and you need a lot of strength to go against the crowd.”Really? These misogynistic tropes in 2026? Vallejo was fined $65,000, roughly half of his prize money, and the 22-year-old apologized on social media later on: “I have respect for the umpires and for the job they do. After a five-hour battle, I was very heated and felt a lot of emotions.” But the damage was already done.Futterman: Sabalenka — Iga Świątek and Gauff out of the way, up a set and two breaks and serving for the semifinals against Shnaider. Then she let the wind and the scenarios enter her head.Abiding memory?Wallace: The three times in the media center when reporters bum-rushed the main news conference room. The first time was after Sinner’s defeat — I have never seen a news conference room so full, not even after Serena Williams lost her final match at the U.S. Open in 2022. There were rows of reporters standing along the sides and back of the room. It happened again a day later, when Djokovic lost to Fonseca. The third big, multi-lingual traffic jam was when Sabalenka came to talk after losing to Shnaider.Eccleshare: The way that in a scorching-hot first week, shocking results spread through the tournament like a virus.Elena Rybakina, the No. 2 seed, had already lost to Ukraine’s Yuliia Starodubtseva in the second round on the first Wednesday when Sinner wilted a day later. Djokovic tumbled out the following day, and Gauff was beaten by Potapova 24 hours later. Amanda Anisimova, the No. 6 seed, was eliminated the same day by Diane Parry. Świątek, the four-time champion, was beaten the next day by Marta Kostyuk.Anything felt possible in that frenzied first seven days.Harpur: A spontaneous one-on-one interview with Harri Heliövaara, who went on to be a men’s doubles finalist here, about how he experiences nerves. The 37-year-old’s eyes lit up. “Wow, where do I start?” he said. The Finn put his hands just below his ribs and pushed on his diaphragm as he explained exactly where nervous energy grips his body. “It’s like a big bubble of air that just does not want to get out of my system,” he said. I’ve rarely experienced an athlete describing such visceral symptoms.Futterman: Djokovic slithering a backhand winner down the line in the fifth set against Fonseca, when his legs were gone and he was trying to hold off both the 19-year-old Brazilian and Father Time. Then he hit a ridiculous touch half-volley, from practically behind him, for a winner. I don’t think anyone else even thinks of attempting that shot. He is still so, so good. There I go again…Shot of the tournamentTwo-time finalist Casper Ruud’s backhand drop-shot return winner from almost in the crowd, against a disbelieving Hamad Medjedovic:🏆 The winners of the week🎾 ATP: 🏆 Alexander Zverev (2) def. What we know about Kentucky basketball's 2026 nonconference schedule
LEXINGTON — Kentucky basketball's 2026-27 schedule is still in its early stages. To this point, only five games have been officially announced. All are listed on the program's website. As UK coach Mark Pope enters his third season guiding his alma mater, the season ahead includes a quintet of high-profile matchups. It begins Nov. 10 in Chicago, as Kentucky tangles with fellow blue blood Kansas in a Champions Classic clash at the United Center. It's always an eagerly anticipated contest when the two winningest programs in the sport collide, but this season's matchup includes a little extra intrigue: Tyran Stokes, the unanimous top-ranked prospect in the 2026 class, chose the Jayhawks over the Wildcats in April.UK has another neutral-site meeting with a longtime rival Nov. 20, traveling to Indianapolis to take on Indiana. Though it's being held at Lucas Oil Stadium, it will count as a home game for the Hoosiers. It's the second game in a four-year contract the two schools signed in October 2023. UK won the first game in the series, rallying for a 72-60 victory at Rupp Arena last season. The fourth edition of the ACC/SEC Challenge has Kentucky back on the road in 2026-27. On Dec. 2, UK will face Virginia at John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, Virginia. The Wildcats are 1-2 in the ACC/SEC Challenge. They won the first edition in November 2023, topping Miami in Lexington. But they've yet to win a game in the series under Pope, falling at Clemson in December 2024 and at home last season to North Carolina. The most notable nonconference tilt at Rupp Arena will be the annual Battle of the Bluegrass rivalry with Louisville, set for Dec. 12. Pope and UofL's Pat Kelsey each have won one time in the series since taking over their respective programs ahead of the 2024-25 season. The Wildcats won by eight points at Rupp in December 2024, then the Cardinals returned the favor last season at the KFC Yum! Center. The Cards haven't tasted victory in Lexington since 2008.The final marquee matchup before UK jumps into SEC play will be part of the CBS Sports Classic. Kentucky travels to the Big Apple on Dec. 19 for a contest against North Carolina. Tipoff is set for 2:30 p.m. at Madison Square Garden.Other matchups, including the Cats' preseason exhibitions and the conference slate for the 2026-27 campaign, will be announced at a later date.Kentucky basketball schedule 2026-27: Nonconference opponentsNov. 10: vs. Kansas (Champions Classic; United Center, Chicago), Time TBANov. 20: vs. Indiana (Lucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis), Time TBADec. 2: at Virginia (ACC/SEC Challenge; John Paul Jones Arena; Charlottesville, Virginia), Time TBADec. 12: vs. Louisville (Rupp Arena), Time TBADec. 19: vs. North Carolina (CBS Sports Classic; Madison Square Garden, New York)Reach Kentucky men’s basketball and football reporter Ryan Black at rblack@gannett.com and follow him on X at @RyanABlack.This article originally appeared on Louisville Courier Journal: UK basketball plays Louisville, Indiana, Kansas, UNC, Virginia in 2026

How our story on Muhammad Ali 10 years after his death came to be
Ten years ago, the world turned its eyes to Louisville as it celebrated the life of its favorite son, Muhammad Ali. His memory still reverberates in the city today.Payton Titus is The Courier Journal's college sports enterprise reporter. Her email address is ptitus@gannett.com — reach out any time with tips, feedback or thoughts. You can also sign up for her weekly newsletter, Full-court Press, for a behind-the-scenes look at how college sports' biggest stories are impacting Louisville and Kentucky athletics. In the meantime, here's a closer look at how her story about the 10th anniversary of Ali's death came together:How did the idea for your story come together? The challenge that comes with writing about Muhammad Ali is that everything has already been said. By people who are way better at saying things than I am. So just as when I wrote about him in October for the 50th anniversary of his third fight with Joe Frazier, I tried to think of how I could move the conversation around Ali forward with this story. And I think the easiest way to do that is by drawing parallels between what Ali went through and contemporary happenings. Unfortunately, there's a lot to draw on today as far as backward progress America has made over the last decade or so. The Voting Rights Act was gutted recently, and state legislators are using that development to disenfranchise Black voters. Islamophobia is on the rise and recently manifested in the killing of three people at an Islamic center in California. These are things Muhammad Ali used his platform in life to disavow. What could we as a city, a country, a world, take from him in this moment to turn things around? That was what I wanted to get at with this story.Describe your reporting process. What steps did you take?I just consumed as much as I could. I read tons of stories (from Ali's life, his death and current headlines), watched Ali's public funeral service, talked to folks about where the best place to take this story would be.I went into the reporting process not really knowing what I wanted to say other than avoiding a regurgitation of the story I wrote in October or Ali's Wikipedia page. So I tried to let people past and present tell me.What key points did you want readers to take away from this story? It's really easy to feel lost and hopeless living in the world today. A lot of people have fewer rights now than on the day they were born. But when you see someone like Muhammad Ali — when you read his story, see what progress he was part of and remember that he was made by the place you are now (that being Louisville) — maybe you'll feel a little better about what lies ahead. Maybe you'll be more confident that the fight in front of us isn't as insurmountable as it may seem. That's what I hope people take from this story.Reach college sports enterprise reporter Payton Titus at ptitus@gannett.com and follow her on X @petitus25. A School Bus Killed a 5-Year-Old. The Crash Is Among Dozens Missing From the Bus Company’s Federal Safety Record.
Illustration by Shoshana Gordon/ProPublica. Source images: Jesse Costa/WBUR, Alyssa Sieb via Nappy, PatrickRich via Flickr. On the day 5-year-old Lens Joseph was killed by a Boston Public Schools bus last year, the driver had already struck a postal truck, ignored a stop sign and missed several stops, prosecutors said. When he got to Lens’ house, he dropped him off on the wrong side of the street and then ran over the kindergartner as he crossed in front of the bus. Transdev, a multinational company that has been the city’s sole bus contractor since 2013, hired and trained the driver of the bus that killed Lens. Yet a federal safety database shows no sign that the company was involved in the April 2025 crash. WBUR and ProPublica found at least 60 fatal Transdev crashes in the last decade, but the federal database shows only 18 under the company’s name. That means 42 fatal crashes are not identified as Transdev’s. This missing information is important because the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, which oversees commercial motor vehicles, relies on it to pinpoint unsafe companies. But the process the agency uses to collect information is faulty: It identifies only a fraction of a company’s fatal crashes. As a result, the full safety record of Transdev, one of the largest private operators of public transit in the U.S., remains a secret to regulators, the public and the local government agencies that might award it a contract. “That is a serious, serious gap in safety,” said Peter Kurdock, general counsel with Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety, a nonprofit that promotes transportation safety and has pushed for improvements in crash data for years. “And it’s a serious, serious shortcoming when it comes to the regulation of these carriers by FMCSA.” Help Further Our Reporting on Bus Crashes If you are a current or former FMCSA employee, or someone in the industry with information about the agency or the safety of school buses, transit buses or motor coaches, our team wants to hear from you. Willoughby Mariano can be reached by phone at 617-358-0802, Signal at willoughbymariano.55 and email at wmariano@bu.edu. The deadly crashes associated with Transdev span at least 16 states and involve pedestrians, at least two bicyclists and other vehicles. Lens’ death and at least two others have resulted in criminal charges against the bus drivers. Transdev did not provide comment on any specific crash. The crash data feeds into FMCSA’s online Safety Measurement System, which makes safety records public for bus companies nationwide. Instead of listing Transdev, that data often lists collisions under the government agency that hired Transdev or the name of a company it acquired. Also, when crashes are listed under other names, companies that oversee the buses involved are not required to claim the collisions. The agency’s instructions for how to determine the motor carrier involved in a crash are interpreted differently by police who respond to the scene, the news organizations found. Based in France, Transdev has vast U.S. operations. It says it holds contracts in busing, light rail and other forms of public transit in 46 states, plus Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico. The multibillion-dollar company employs more than 30,000 people nationally. Transdev’s only school bus contract is with Boston Public Schools. Esaie Joseph wipes away tears as he talks about the April 2025 death of his son, Lens Joseph, 5, who was run over by a Boston school bus operated by Transdev. “The first thing I hope is justice for him,” Joseph said. Jesse Costa/WBUR Transdev U.S. CEO Laura Hendricks declined an interview. In a written statement, Transdev said it complies with “federally mandated reporting standards.” “Transparency and continuous improvement are central to our safety approach, and we work closely with oversight agencies and our clients to ensure our practices meet or exceed expectations,” the statement said. The statement did not respond to questions about why Transdev did not ensure crashes the company was involved in were logged as part of its safety record. It did stress that reporting crashes is the responsibility of law enforcement. At the publications’ request, Transdev reviewed lists of the crashes that reporters tied to the company. Transdev confirmed that most of them matched with collisions in their records but did not have records for all of them. The FMCSA did not respond to requests to interview Derek Barrs, the head of the agency, or emails with a list of questions. Other than the federal database, there are few ways to connect crashes to particular bus companies. A different database, run by the Federal Transit Administration, records transit crashes but doesn’t connect them to contractors. Separately, FMCSA requires all bus companies to keep an internal register of how many serious crashes take place during their operations. However, those records are not open to the public, and companies are not obligated to submit the information to regulators unless they ask for it. Transdev declined the publications’ request for its register. So while Transdev may know about its own collisions, federal agencies and the public often don’t. Darin Jones, a former FMCSA Midwest field administrator, spent more than 35 years in federal transportation safety and often oversaw investigations. He said investigators are supposed to consider a company’s serious crashes as part of their assessment. If many are logged inconsistently, they cannot determine whether Transdev or any other company is operating safely. “ The knowledge of this motor carrier’s operation, any motor carrier’s operation, is critical,” said Jones. “If you don’t have the full picture of an operation, how do you truly know what’s going on?” At least in Boston, Transdev appears to have had no serious school bus crashes over 10 years. But that’s not true. WBUR and ProPublica uncovered at least 71 serious crashes involving the company that weren’t under its name. Kurdock says the FMCSA needs to fix its safety data, especially in Boston. “The agency needs to be much more proactive in ensuring that the data they do have is accurate, even more so when you’re talking about a carrier that is operating a transportation service for schoolchildren,” Kurdock said. “If there is one bipartisan issue left here in Washington, D.C., it’s that schoolchildren should have a safe ride.” Transdev Crashes Across the Country Were Recorded Under Different Names Since 2016, about two-thirds of Transdev’s 60 fatal crashes have appeared in federal safety data under the names of a company it acquired or agencies that contracted with them. Click a state to see more details about the Transdev crashes we found there and how they were recorded in the federal database. Note: includes crashes from 2016 through 2025. Nurse, Cyclist Among Those Killed When a crash happens, local law enforcement fill out accident reports that document the location, identities of the drivers and companies involved. This information becomes part of the federal safety database and helps regulators connect a crash to a particular company. But the news organizations found multiple examples where that system masked the company running the bus lines. For most of these crashes, the database is also unclear on whether the drivers violated traffic laws. In Lens’ case, the motor carrier is listed as “CITY OF BOSTON MVMB,” an abbreviation for the city’s Motor Vehicle Management Bureau, which acquires and manages municipal vehicles. There is no mention of the school district or Transdev being involved. Another crash killed registered nurse Renée Shea in southern Massachusetts in 2017. It appears under the name of the Greater Attleboro Taunton Regional Transit Authority, not Transdev, the agency’s contractor at the time. A bus made a left-hand turn into the path of the Jeep SUV she was driving, according to a police report. The bus company’s driver, Margaret Correia, may have been distracted because she began to take off her jacket before she made her turn, the report found. She could not be reached for comment. Correia pleaded guilty to misdemeanor negligent operation of a motor vehicle, court records show. A GATRA spokeswoman said Shea’s family received $1 million from the area transit agency’s insurer. Charlie Shea said his ex-wife was a generous mother who had taken custody of her granddaughter. A 2006 photo of Charlie Shea and then-wife Renée Shea, who was killed by a transit bus. He wants her death included as part of Transdev’s safety record. “It’d make them more accountable,” he said. Courtesy of Charlie Shea As a former MBTA bus driver, Charlie Shea said he continues to be shocked by the bus driver’s actions. Driving and taking your jacket off “ain’t a bright idea for anybody,” he said. He said his ex-wife’s death, like all crashes, needs to be part of Transdev’s safety record. “It’d make them more accountable,” Shea said. “They would have to use their safety records to get contracts from the state or the counties or from schools.” Outside Massachusetts, there are dozens of other fatal Transdev crashes in the database with no mention of the company. In a November 2023 Las Vegas crash, federal records list the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada as the motor carrier of a transit bus that killed bicyclist David Ortiz in a crosswalk. Court records state driver Johnelle Johnson, a Transdev employee, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter charge. A lawsuit by Ortiz’s family against Transdev and the driver was settled for an undisclosed sum. Transdev has operated the Las Vegas-area bus system since 2023, when it acquired First Transit, which originally held the contract, the commission’s records show. Although First Transit is now part of Transdev, at least five fatal crashes across the United States are still recorded under First Transit’s name after the acquisition. Beyond the fatal crashes, WBUR and ProPublica also took a close look at all of Transdev’s serious, but nonfatal, crashes with Boston Public Schools. Those include crashes where any person was transported to a hospital or a vehicle was towed. In a December 2024 crash, a bus lurched onto a sidewalk outside Curley K-8 School in the Jamaica Plain neighborhood. The bus struck an 8-year-old boy with autism and his school aide before smashing into two fences, a police report states. The crash sent both victims to the hospital with long-term injuries, their civil lawsuits against Transdev allege. A bus camera showed that Transdev driver Vitony Laguerre’s eyes were closed and his head was back before he pressed the accelerator, police stated. He pleaded not guilty to a misdemeanor charge of negligent operation of a motor vehicle. In December 2024, an 8-year-old boy and his school aide were struck by a school bus outside Curley K-8 School in the Jamaica Plain neighborhood. Dashcam video shows the driver, Vitony Laguerre, had his eyes closed seconds before he drove up the sidewalk and through fences. Courtesy of Sweeney Merrigan law firm The federal record lists the city of Boston, not Transdev, as the carrier. Attorneys for Laguerre and both crash victims did not comment for this story. Laguerre and Transdev denied they were negligent in the crash, according to records in an ongoing civil case. Boston Public Schools Superintendent Mary Skipper declined an interview request. A spokesperson did not answer a list of questions, but in a written statement said that the district follows established safety protocols and has worked with Transdev over several years to improve accountability and performance. “We will continue to work with our transportation partner to monitor performance, address issues as they arise, and ensure every student gets to and from school safely,” the statement said. Local Law Enforcement Takes Over The current system of collecting and publishing bus crash data began as part of a federal push for safer roads. In the early days of this work, in the 1970s and 1980s, rules put the burden on bus and truck companies to self-report serious crashes to the U.S. Department of Transportation. Each operator had to report its fatal bus crashes in person or by telephone “as soon as possible”; crashes that resulted in injuries or serious vehicle damage had to be reported in writing, and in triplicate. But both companies and federal safety investigators complained the process was burdensome and inadequate. For one thing, investigators could not tell whether companies failed to report their accidents, said Jones, the former FMCSA regional administrator. Regulators and traffic safety researchers thought they could do better. At the time, many states were already collecting crash information electronically from local police departments. “Why burden the industry with reporting?” Jones said. “We had a more accurate record from the states.” So in 1993, the federal Department of Transportation decided to end self-reporting by carriers. Today, local law enforcement agencies send their bus and truck crash information to state agencies, which submit it to FMCSA. After investigating, a local officer must fill out a form that asks for the name of the bus company, or “carrier,” that is involved in the crash and the company’s U.S. Department of Transportation identifier. FMCSA training material recommends the officer determine which company should be included in the form by figuring out which entity “controls” or “directs” the bus. For transit and school buses, this decision can be surprisingly complicated. Transdev employees may be behind the wheel, and the company may manage the daily operations of the buses, but the transit agencies or a school district may choose the routes. So who is in charge? In these cases, Transdev’s role often disappears in the data. Transportation experts and former FMCSA officials said bus companies can voluntarily inform the agency that crashes under other names belong to them. But Alex Scott, a University of Tennessee, Knoxville transportation expert, said companies rarely update the federal record, according to research he published in 2021. “There’s not really an incentive for them to account for all of their crashes,” Scott said. “If a company could just magically make them go away, of course they would.” Boston City Councilor Erin Murphy, a former teacher for the district where Lens attended school, has become a vocal critic of how Transdev operates its buses. She was shocked when she learned from a reporter that the company is not required to take steps to ensure all its crashes are part of its federal safety record. “Horrifying,” she said. “Why would they be able to not report accidents — one that was a fatal accident? There’s nothing worse than a fatal accident.” “There’s not really an incentive for them to account for all of their crashes. … If a company could just magically make them go away, of course they would.”Alex Scott, a transportation expert at University of Tennessee, Knoxville After several passenger bus crashes with multiple fatalities, Congress passed legislation in 2012 that gave FMCSA powers to conduct more comprehensive inspections into the safety operations of bus companies. When Transdev underwent one of these reviews in 2016, investigators uncovered what they described as “numerous crashes” that were not listed as part of the contractor’s safety record, according to the inspection report. There were enough crashes that the FMCSA planned to give Transdev a “conditional” safety rating, which would mean the company had insufficient safety procedures. Because local police departments may not “be aware or equipped” to report crashes to the FMCSA, the carrier should report them, the report stated. “This self reporting is required for accurate evaluation by FMCSA and the accurate safety record of the carrier,” it added. The company successfully appealed the decision to lower its safety rating by arguing its drivers could not have prevented many of the crashes investigators uncovered. FMCSA investigators urged Transdev to report to the agency when its role in a crash is not reflected in safety data, yet the company’s name continues to be absent from many of them. Transdev did not comment on this recommendation. A Father Seeks “Justice” Lens’ death last year became a local flashpoint, shedding new light on Transdev’s safety procedures and raising questions about its ability to keep the city’s children safe. The driver of the school bus that killed Lens should not have been behind the wheel that day, and the bus never should have been on the road, according to information from city officials and prosecutors. Driver Jean Charles became ineligible to operate a school bus in December 2024 after a required driving credential expired, according to a statement from Boston Mayor Michelle Wu’s office last year. But the company did not take him off the road then. In the weeks before Lens died, Charles had two minor collisions and underwent remedial training, it said, and soon returned to work. On the day of Lens’ death, Charles began his shift without conducting a required pretrip inspection, prosecutors alleged. One of the bus’s four rear tires was flat, and a safety crossing bar was broken. Transdev is also in charge of maintenance, but it’s unclear how long the bus had these problems. Had Charles followed procedures, the bus would have been sent for repairs, prosecutors said. And yet Charles set off on his route to UP Academy Dorchester, where Lens climbed aboard. At 2:42 p.m., Charles dropped off Lens and his 11-year-old-cousin on the wrong side of their street. To get home, they would have to cross in front of the bus. Transdev school bus driver Jean Charles arrives at his arraignment hearing on felony involuntary vehicular homicide in March. Charles drove the bus that ran over and killed kindergartner Lens Joseph. Robin Lubbock/WBUR Neighbor Carolyn Tomlinson was inside her home cleaning windows when the cries of a child brought her outside. She followed the sound to the corner of Glenwood Avenue and Washington Street, where she saw the cousin screaming. Lens was on the ground. “I’m looking at Lens, just lying there,” Tomlinson said. “And as a mom it broke my heart.” Tomlinson said she dialed 911 and held the cousin in her arms to comfort her. “I was praying with her, saying, ‘It’s going to be OK. God’s got us,’” Tomlinson said. Lens’ father, Esaie Joseph, had parked his truck in North Carolina after a day on the road as a long-haul trucker when his brother told him about the crash in a phone call. Hours later, he got word that his boy was dead. Lens was Joseph’s only son, and he was self-assured beyond his years, his father said in an interview with WBUR. His nickname was “smart guy.” Every time Lens asked Joseph for a new toy, he’d begin with, “Dad, you know I’m a smart guy?” the father recalled. Joseph has kept his son’s soccer ball and toy cars, and he smiled as he sorted through them on a recent evening: a police car, because Lens wanted to be an officer. A Spider-Man-themed car because he loved the superhero. Esaie Joseph, Lens’ father, looks through his son’s favorite toys, which he kept after the boy’s death. He said he is suing Transdev because he wants the company to improve safety. Jesse Costa/WBUR After he lost Lens, Joseph stopped driving trucks and moved with his relatives to a new neighborhood, away from the scene of the crash. He now is a driver for a city of Boston van service for seniors. He and his family are suing Transdev and Charles, who resigned from Transdev soon after the crash. Joseph said he wants some good to come from Lens’ death, and for Transdev to operate safely. “The first thing I hope is justice for him,” he said. “They have to care for safety so something like this will not happen again.” Charles pleaded not guilty to felony involuntary manslaughter and other charges in March. His attorney did not respond to requests for comment. Transdev did not comment about the crash and said the company had discussed its safety measures publicly during a Boston City Council meeting last August. The company and Charles denied in civil court filings that they were negligent or reckless. Transdev is in the third year of its five-year, $651 million contract with Boston Public Schools and transports about 19,000 of the district’s students every school day. It is currently looking to expand in Boston, where it is one of three finalists for a multibillion-dollar commuter rail contract. To this day, the federal record does not show that Transdev was the operator of the bus that killed Lens. Neighbor Tomlinson wants it to be part of Transdev’s safety record so regulators can hold them accountable, and agencies and school systems can understand the companies they are hiring. “It should be visible to the ones that need it, so we can see it and keep our babies safe,” Tomlinson said. A Boston Public Schools bus drives past a memorial where Lens Joseph was run over in April 2025 by his own school bus. Erin Clark/The Boston Globe via Getty Images How We Analyzed Transdev’s Safety Record The Motor Carrier Management Information System, maintained by FMCSA, is the only public database that tracks bus crashes nationwide and lists company names. It includes crashes involving a tow-away, injury or death. But when reporters tried to use it to search for crashes involving Transdev, we found that several deadly crashes we knew of did not show up under the carrier’s name. Through further reporting, we learned that the database often lists collisions under the name of a company tied to Transdev or under the name of the government agency that hired Transdev. To understand where Transdev has operated, a team of reporters used company statements, procurement databases, news accounts and court records. We also searched a database of contracts with public transit agencies and found more than 100 entities that had bus-related contracts with Transdev over the past decade, including cities, regional transit authorities and universities. WBUR and ProPublica searched in the MCMIS database for fatal crashes that occurred during time periods covered by the contracts we identified. We also included crashes listed under First Transit, a company that Transdev acquired, if the crash occurred after the acquisition. Reporters provided the lists of crashes to Transdev, Boston Public Schools and transit agencies, and used other sources to confirm that Transdev was contracted to run buses at the time of the crashes. Ultimately, we identified 60 fatal crashes involving buses operated by Transdev from 2016 through 2025. Among these crashes, 42 were not listed under Transdev’s name in the federal database, including two that were not in the database at all. We also searched the MCMIS data for serious crashes of buses operated by Transdev for Boston Public Schools. The public database does not specify whether a school bus was involved, so we supplemented it with crash data from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, which does flag some crashes as involving school buses. We also used bus VIN numbers to identify school buses based on the vehicle’s manufacturer, make and model using a federal lookup tool. WBUR and ProPublica uncovered at least 71 serious Boston Public Schools crashes involving Transdev from 2016 through 2025. The post A School Bus Killed a 5-Year-Old. The Crash Is Among Dozens Missing From the Bus Company’s Federal Safety Record. appeared first on ProPublica.

WTC Standings: New Zealand drop after England defeat; where are India and Pakistan?
New Zealand slipped from second to fourth place in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 standings after a 115-run defeat to England in the first Test at Lord’s on Sunday. The result was a setback for the Black Caps in their bid to stay among the top contenders for a place in the WTC final in June 2027, where only the top two teams will qualify. The match was shaped by rain interruptions and a difficult Lord’s pitch that offered uneven bounce. England were bowled out for just 140 in their first innings, but their bowlers hit back strongly by dismissing New Zealand for 113 to take a slender lead. In the second innings, England recovered well, with Emilio Gay scoring a crucial 57 to help the hosts post 226 and set a challenging target.New Zealand struggled with the bat throughout the contest. Rain limited play on the third day, but the visitors failed to capitalise when action resumed. Starting day four at 55 for five, they were eventually bowled out for 138, with Glenn Phillips top-scoring with an unbeaten 44.Pacer Ollie Robinson played a key role in England’s victory. After taking five wickets in New Zealand’s first innings, he also chipped in with 29 valuable runs and claimed 2 for 38 in the second innings. The win was a timely boost for England after their recent 4-1 Ashes series loss to Australia. However, despite the victory, England remain seventh in the WTC standings with four wins from 11 matches.Australia stay on top; India and Pakistan struggleAustralia continue to lead the WTC table with 84 points and a points percentage of 87.50, having won seven of their eight matches. South Africa are second, followed by Sri Lanka in third.New Zealand are fourth with a points percentage of 58.33, level with Bangladesh but ahead on tiebreakers. India are sixth with 52 points and a points percentage of 48.15, while England sit seventh. Bengals warned of Dexter Lawrence 'automatic backfire'
It goes without saying, but there’s some big risk involved in the Cincinnati Bengals’ trade for Dexter Lawrence. Coughing up the 10th overall pick was a big deal. And Lawrence himself is a bit of a risk when considering things like age, injury and production. These things aren’t major concerns, but they did get lost in the conversation in the hype of the Bengals making a franchise-altering move. Bleacher Report’s Brad Gagnon is bringing up those points again while talking about how the NFL’s biggest offseason moves could backfire.“Lawrence will turn 29 this season, and the big guy might be beyond his prime," Gagnon wrote. "His raw and rate-based numbers have dropped off the last couple of seasons, and he'll cost about $70 million over the next three years. It's hard to imagine he's the final puzzle piece for this team. And if he isn't, this is an automatic backfire.”There’s hope that some nagging injuries and much better surroundings will ensure that the move doesn’t backfire on the Bengals. The goal is to win a title, no doubt. But the fact the Bengals made the move at all makes it pretty hard for anyone to bash it, even if it doesn’t work out. Realistically, Lawrence is a big upgrade who should help young players around him develop in ideal surroundings, as an added bonus. Texas A&M is 'at the top' of 2027 5-star CB's list after his OV
This weekend, 2027 five-star cornerback Joshua Dobson made his way back to College Station for his official visit just a week after fellow five-star corner John Meredith took his OV, and according to sources, this could be the final piece to his recruitment puzzle, possibly leading to Dobson committing to the Aggies in the coming days/weeks.For those who have been paying attention, Texas A&M has been the leader in Dobson's recruitment over the past two months, and even though On3 insider Steve Wiltfong stated that the Aggies are slightly leading for John Meredith after his OV, I would be shocked if coach Mike Elko earns commitments from both blue-chip prospects. After Meredith's OV to Texas this weekend, it's hard to tell where the Aggies stand right now, but concerning Dobson, AggieYell insider Joseph Hastings' recent interview with the five-star defensive back revealed that his final talk with the staff, especially Mike Elko, makes Texas A&M the top destination he'll consider before announcing his commitment decision.“I’d definitely say yeah, they’re at the top,” Dobson replied to Hastings' question. “It’s definitely Elko’s big push. He’s a defensive-minded head coach. I know he’s going to take care of me and I know I’m going to be developed there and be great if I go there.”If this isn't a good indication that Texas A&M is close to gaining Dobson's commitment, I don't know what is, and after stating that the Aggies have "set the bar" during his recruitment, it's going to be tough for LSU and Michigan to outdo what Elko and his staff have accomplished this weekend.Dobson went into more detail regarding his visit, including John Meredith's interest in the Aggies, which you can read here. Joshua Dobson is the 6th-ranked prospect in the 2027 class and the No. 2-ranked cornerback in the cycle.Contact/Follow us @AggiesWire on X (formerly Twitter) and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Texas A&M news, notes and opinions. MLB power rankings: How far will Yankees slide without Aaron Judge?
Aaron Judge is such an impactful player, the New York Yankees must figure out how to recreate themselves without him.And will they face an identity shift, or an identity crisis? The Yankees lost three of their first five games without Judge after the 6-foot-7 slugger and three-time MVP was lost for several weeks with a stress fracture of the first rib on his right side. Now, they face a key six-game road swing to Cleveland and Toronto that may answer the question everyone's wondering: How good are they without him?The Yankees slid one spot to No. 5 in USA TODAY Sports' power rankings, as an already muddled AL field gets even further complicated. That's not to say the Yankees will get pulled back to the pack. They'll simply have to lean a little more on a starting rotation that ranks fourth in the AL with a 3.12 ERA. And continue getting contributions from players like Jazz Chisholm, on a 19-game heater (four homers, .919 OPS). And hope for positive updates on Judge.A look at our updated rankings:1. Atlanta Braves (-)Among the many reasons they call him Money Michael Harris II: He's 4-for-6 as a pinch-hitter, including a game-winner Sunday.2. Los Angeles Dodgers (-)Very fortunate a grisly collision didn't disrupt one of Max Muncy's finest seasons.3. Milwaukee Brewers (+2)The Jake Bauers Experience rolls on: He has a pair of four-walk games, has .376 OBP, .891 OPS.4. Tampa Bay Rays (-1)In a 3-10 funk, and their advantage over the Yankees has evaporated.5. New York Yankees (-1)Spencer Jones, still seeking first homer, goes 3-for-3 in first game following recall.6. Cleveland Guardians (-)Starters Gavin Williams, Parker Messick each building strong All-Star cases.7. St. Louis Cardinals (+1)Riley O'Brien's 17 saves rank second in majors.8. Philadelphia Phillies (+7)Cristopher Sanchez's amazing streak pushes Phillies' rotation to fourth-most innings pitched in NL.9. San Diego Padres (-2)Manny Machado sags to .169, .596 OPS. Perhaps "more analytics" is the answer?10. Chicago White Sox (-1)Randal Grichuk didn't join team until May but ranks sixth with 19 RBIs.11. Seattle Mariners (+1)Cal Raleigh's rehab assignment begins.12. Chicago Cubs (-2)Rotation savior Ben Brown has 1.74 ERA, hasn't given up homer in majors-best 56 2/3 innings.13. Arizona Diamondbacks (-1)Corbin Carroll nearly on a 30-homer pace.14. Pittsburgh Pirates (-3)Rotation stalwarts Mitch Keller, Braxton Ashcraft each give up six runs to No. 1 Atlanta.15. Toronto Blue Jays (+3)Say what? Fill-in catcher Brandon Valenzuela ranks second on team with seven home runs.16. Cincinnati Reds (-4)At least Matt McLain starting to awaken, pushing average over .200 and OPS from .614 to .671 in a week.17. Texas Rangers (+3)For the sixth time since May 2, they've pulled within a game of .500. Perhaps this time's the charm.18. Washington Nationals (-1)Marlins sweep in DC, series win at Arizona continues crazy home (12-20) and road (21-13) fortunes.19. Athletics (-3)Perhaps Gage Jump can save this rotation: He's given up just one run in 13 ⅓ innings in two starts away from Yolo County.20. Baltimore Orioles (-1)Still just 11-15 in AL East after losing rubber game at Toronto.21. Houston Astros (+1)11-8 since Jeremy Peña's return.22. ‘I don’t have to change’: Shreyas Iyer embraces India T20I captaincy challenge in his own way
NEW DELHI: India's newly-appointed T20I captain Shreyas Iyer has made it clear that taking over the leadership role will not change who he is, insisting that he would rather stay true to the values that shaped him than try to emulate anyone else. The 31-year-old, who was named India's new T20I skipper on Saturday in place of Suryakumar Yadav, said he intends to carry the same mindset and personality that helped him navigate the fiercely competitive cricket culture in Mumbai.“I don’t have to change my personality. I have to be the same person how I was before, and not try to be someone else or be under someone’s shadow,” Iyer said. The batter added that he had always thrived on competition and challenges from a young age.“I obviously loved challenges growing up, especially being from Mumbai, where the cricket is pretty big, competition is high. Every other kid on the street, they want to represent Mumbai,” he said.‘My mindset was always about winning’Iyer said his competitive streak had always revolved around winning and enjoying the game, something that he believes helped shape his personality as a cricketer.“My mindset was always about winning, against everyone that I challenged so whether it's about learning or winning that is secondary, but more fun you have growing up, the more competitive nature you have, especially while you play cricket or any other sport in general," said Iyer.“I think that takes you to another level and you want to take that sort of responsibility (and) even when I've got this job right now, or a responsibility as a captain. It’s a great challenge at the same time,” he added. The appointment marks a remarkable comeback for Iyer, who had fallen out of India's T20I plans after his last appearance in December 2023. He now returns not only as a middle-order batter but also as the man entrusted with leading the side in the format. His first assignment as captain will be the two-match T20I series in Ireland.Ganguly backs selectors' callFormer India captain and ex-BCCI president Sourav Ganguly backed the decision to hand Iyer the leadership role, saying the Mumbai batter had earned the honour through his performances. 131579916“Shreyas has done well, he has earned it. I would not say that the removal of Suryakumar Yadav is unfair. The selectors have made a decision,” Ganguly said.Iyer replaces Suryakumar, who led India to the T20 World Cup title in March but was omitted from the latest squad.

Dortmund youngster sent off 13 minutes into Italy debutOn Sunday evening, Luca Reggiani came on for his senior international debut for Italy in a friendly against Greece – but it did not go quite as planned for the Borussia Dortmund youngster. After a long ball from Greece, Reggiani brought down striker Anastasios Douvikas and prevented him from getting to the ball. Referee Yigal Frid adjudged it to be a denial of a clear goalscoring opportunity and showed the 18-year-old centre-back a straight red card just 13 minutes after coming on.Reggiani’s BVB teammate Filippo Mané came on for the final 45 minutes and made his second appearance for Italy. Samuele Inacio, who had made his Italy debut on Wednesday against Luxembourg, was kept on the bench for the entire match against Greece.Meanwhile, Borussia Mönchengladbach’s Fabio Chiarodia made his second consecutive start for Italy, playing the full 90 minutes.

Windhorst: 'I have not heard one iota of Jaylen Brown truly being available'
Brian Windhorst: "I'm going to tell you I have not actually heard any material, true discussions. I'm certain maybe someone has called on Jaylen Brown maybe, but I have not heard one iota of Jaylen Brown truly being available or Derrick White being available. It is a proven commodity that Jaylen and Jayson and Derrick White are a championship trio. They're under contract, and it's big contracts, absolutely. It's a lot of money and their flexibility is impacted by that, but Brad Stevens has shown very good player personnel. He's repeatedly made very good player personnel moves, and I'm sure there's a list of things that they're looking at. When they emerge from this summer, they need to have more guys in their rotation that they can trust, especially the big man positions."YouTubeThis article originally appeared on Hoops Hype: Windhorst: 'I have not heard one iota of Jaylen Brown truly being available'
