49ers would have loved if the 2025 NFL draft went this way
The San Francisco 49ers made the necessary choice to upgrade their defensive unit with the selection of Mykell Williams at No. 11 in the 2025 NFL draft. Looking back, though, would they have done it again? Surely not, considering he tore his ACL after nine games and just one sack. But then, who would the 49ers have taken if they had the gift of foresight? Bleacher Report's Gary Davenport made the easy pick here and chose Ohio State receiver Emeka Egbuka, who ended up going No. 19 to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in real life. Emeka Egbuka came roaring out of the gate last year before fading over the second half of his rookie season. But Egbuka posted three 100-yard games as a rookie and had an equal number of contests with double-digit catches.Egbuka faded last year because his targets dropped. He's absolutely capable of being the No. 1 wide receiver for an NFL offense—and the Niners need all the help at the position they can get. This pick also makes a lot of sense when you consider the 49ers would have known Brandon Aiyuk would never suit up for the team again. Without a star WR1, the 49ers were left with Jauan Jennings, Kendrick Bourne and oft-injured Ricky Pearsall. Adding Egbuka to that mix would have been a tremendous get for San Francisco.Instead, the 49ers are left with a receiver room full of young developmental players and aging stars. Mike Evans and Christian Kirk are the top targets for Brock Purdy, with Pearsall and 2025 second-rounder De'Zhaun Stribling as the other potential starters on the outside. This article originally appeared on Niners Wire: 2025 NFL draft: 49ers take Buccaneers WR Emeka Egbuka in re-draft

Cole Strange Explains Why Familiarity With Mike McDaniel’s Offense Led Him to Chargers
Despite just joining the Los Angeles Chargers in March, guard Cole Strange is the most familiar with offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel’s scheme. McDaniel and Strange worked together last season with the Miami Dolphins. McDaniel was the head coach, so Strange spent the season getting to know McDaniel’s style of play. Strange said his familiarly with McDaniel and his offensive scheme is what drew him to the Chargers in free agency this offseason. “I think consistency in scheme is a big deal,” Strange said on Monday, per the Chargers’ official team website. “It’s not really talked about much, but running the same offense, particularly this one is unique.“Being able to do that in back-to-back years was attractive for sure,” Strange added.Strange signed a two-year, $13 million contract with the Chargers in free agency. Los Angeles Chargers guard Cole Strange poses for a photo. Photo Credit: Joaquin Torres/Los Angeles ChargersStrange Says McDaniel’s Scheme Fits His StrengthsStrange explained how McDaniel’s offensive scheme often involves running off the ball. Strange said this style of play is a strong fit for him because his athleticism is a bigger strength for him than his size.Strange also said McDaniel’s offensive scheme is similar to what he did in college at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. “I feel like I’ve been comfortable, but there is a little natural comfort to it,” Strange said. “It’s somewhat similar to some of the stuff I did in college too, so I think maybe moreso just a matter of timing in the scheme. Which like I said, it’s a big deal for it to be in this offense for two years in a row.“The longer you’re in an offense or a scheme, the better, because you know the calls, you know the technique,” Strange added. “It’s not like you’re ground zero every year.”Strange and the Chargers will begin preseason games on the road against the Houston Texans on Aug. 13. Knicks fans loudly boo Victor Wembanyama as Spurs star takes floor for Game 3
New York Knicks fans are giving San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama the business ahead of Game 3 of the NBA Finals on Monday night.Upon taking the court ahead of the contest at Madison Square Garden, Knicks fans greeted Wemby with loud boos, which is exactly what we expected to hear. After all, Wembanyama is the biggest threat to the Knicks’ chances of finishing off the NBA Finals after taking a 2-0 lead. And even though he has struggled in this series thus far, Knicks fans are taking nothing for granted.Knicks fans should also be trying to get into Wemby’s head after he admitted that he lost his poise in Game 2 after committing a crucial turnover in the closing seconds.“I’m still very blurry, and that’s the whole problem,” Wembanyama said when asked about the final three possessions. “I need to have more poise, more control over the game.”That comment was simply unacceptable to Shaquille O’Neal and the NBA legend suggested the Knicks should try and take advantage of Wemby seemingly being flustered.“As the leader you should probably say, ‘It’s on me,’ but don’t say things are blurry,” Shaq said. “If I’m anybody on the New York Knicks, I’m coming at his head on Monday … That sounds like he’s flustered … As that guy on that team, you just gotta step up.”Rest assured, Knicks fans know exactly what is going on with Wemby and he’s going to be hearing boos (and probably much worse) all night long.More NBA NewsWhy Charles Oakley isn’t attending Game 3 of NBA FinalsStephen A. 'Lockdown': Security ramped up at Madison Square Garden as Trump goes to NBA Finals
With President Donald Trump attending Game 3 of the NBA Finals between the Knicks and Spurs on Monday night, the New York Police Department and the Secret Service say they are putting Madison Square Garden on "lockdown."Trump’s motorcade arrived at Madison Square Garden Monday night ahead of the highly anticipated game.White House Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Scavino, EPA administrator Lee Zeldin, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and Jared Kushner were among those in attendance.During a news conference Monday morning, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said police officers will establish a block-to-two-block-radius security perimeter around the Midtown Manhattan arena, canceling a fan watch party that was set to occur outside the venue."I think New Yorkers are used to presidents coming to town, and that they understand that that generally means lockdown of areas, and that's what you're going to see tonight at the Garden," Tisch said.Gregory Shamus/Getty Images - PHOTO: New York Knicks guard Jalen Brunson shoots the ball between San Antonio Spurs players Julian Champagnie and Victor Wembanyama during the fourth quarter in Game Two of the 2026 NBA Finals at Frost Bank Center, June 05, 2026, in San Antonio, Texas. Beginning at 4 p.m. ET, four-and-a-half hours before the start of the game, police will start blocking off streets and avenues around Madison Square Garden, creating a security frozen zone, according to Tisch."No one will be allowed inside the secured area unless they have a ticket to the game, a train ticket, they are going to a business inside the area, they have credentials, or they have some other authorized reason to be there," she said.Map Tiles by Google Earth, NYPD - PHOTO: Madison Square Garden NBA Finals 'Lockdown'Tisch said no one will be allowed in the secured area with a backpack unless they are going to nearby Pennsylvania Station to catch a train.WABC - PHOTO: A U.S. Secret Service officer secures a temporary security fence erected outside Madison Square Garden, June 8, 2026, ahead of Game 3 of the NBA Finals between the Knicks and Spurs, which is expected to be attended by President Donald Trump.Matt McCool, special agent in charge of the U.S. Secret Service Field Office in New York, advised ticketed fans to arrive at the Garden two hours before game time to ensure they make it through the "multiple layers" of security, including magnetometers, in time for the 8:30 p.m. ET tipoff. In coordination with the Secret Service, Tisch said a decision was made to cancel Monday night's fan watch party outside of Madison Square Garden due to Trump attending the game.Samuel Corum/Getty Images - PHOTO: President Donald Trump, pictured here speaking to reporters, June 5, 2026, on Air Force One, plans to attend an NBA Finals game this week between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs at Madison Square Garden in New York. But Tisch said other watch parties are scheduled for Monday night, including one hosted by New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani at Bryant Park, about a mile east of the Garden.Mamdani said last week that he also plans to be at the Garden for Game 3.Tisch said the watch party outside the Garden will resume for Game 4 on Wednesday night.'Heightened risk' for malicious actorsThe return of the NBA Finals to New York comes with a "heightened risk of attention by malicious actors across the ideological spectrum," according to a New York Police Department assessment obtained by ABC News. Progressive Nithya Raman advances to November runoff against Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass
Nithya Raman, a candidate in the Los Angeles mayoral race, smiles during a campaign event discussing tenant protections with renters in Los Angeles, Monday, June 1, 2026. (AP Photo/Jae C. Hong)2026-06-08T23:58:03Z LOS ANGELES (AP) — Progressive city council member Nithya Raman has advanced to a November runoff against Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, setting up an unexpected matchup between two Democrats and former political allies to run the struggling city of nearly 4 million. The outcome means Spencer Pratt, a Republican and former reality television personality from “The Hills,” is out of the running. His candidacy had drawn national attention because of his celebrity and willingness to challenge liberal governance in a city dominated by Democrats, but the buzz did not translate into enough votes to make the runoff. Raman made a last-minute entry into the race, after she had endorsed Bass for reelection. She was elected to the council with the support of the Democratic Socialists of America, and the election will test whether voters in the heavily Democratic city want to move further to the political left to address long-running problems of homelessness, buckled streets and sidewalks and climbing rent and home prices. The race also has historical markers. Bass is the first Black woman to hold the post, and Raman could be the first South Asian woman in the job. “If you’re as frustrated by the broken status quo as I am, I hope you’ll join our movement to build a city that works for everyone,” Raman said in a statement. “For too long, City Hall has prioritized giving political advantage to powerful interests that fund elections. Meanwhile, working people pay the price in higher rents, depleted services and a city that has stopped working for them.” Read More Bass campaign strategist Douglas Herman said, “A campaign against Nithya Raman, who allows encampments near schools and cuts the police force, is one Mayor Bass looks forward to winning.” The mayoral race was technically nonpartisan, so the candidates appeared on the ballot without party identification next to their names. The election was not a vote of confidence in Bass, who according to incomplete returns received under 35% of the vote, a vulnerable position for an incumbent.Raman had been running in third until Sunday, but she gained more votes with every update provided by election officials in Los Angeles since June 2, primary day.Bass represents the Democratic establishment as the incumbent mayor, and she’s backed by Gov. Gavin Newsom, former Vice President Kamala Harris and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, along with influential labor unions. She served in the state Legislature and Congress before becoming mayor in 2022 and was under consideration to be former President Joe Biden’s running mate in 2020.Raman — in her first run for citywide office — has promised to speed up housing construction, bring back entertainment industry jobs and improve services in a city known for dirty streets, gridlock and homeless encampments that are commonplace in many neighborhoods. “What we are doing right now is just not working,” Raman says. “LA’s primary strategy for homelessness has been to move encampments from one block to another, from your block to your neighbor’s block and back again. ... It’s political theater.” California’s vote count takes a long timeIt took nearly a week to determine who would face Bass in November due to California’s notoriously slow vote-counting process. Ballots are mailed to every eligible voter and they are counted if they are postmarked by Election Day and arrive at an election office within seven days. Los Angeles, like other counties in California, processes and counts mail ballots in roughly the order they are received, so the last ones returned are the last ones counted. On Tuesday night after polls closed, Los Angeles released results from mail ballots that had been returned early and already processed as well as votes cast that day. Those votes put Bass in the lead with Pratt running in second and Raman behind in third. Since then, the county has been processing and releasing results from mail ballots that arrived later.Election data shows that large numbers of Democrats held onto their mail ballots and returned them in the race’s final days, which helps explain why Bass and Raman have been doing better than Pratt in the votes counted since primary day. Raman’s political positions have shiftedBorn in India, Raman moved to the United States as a child and earned degrees from Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where she studied urban planning. She has opposed efforts to prohibit homeless people from setting up tents within 500 feet (152 meters) of schools and daycare centers. However, she appears to have softened her opposition to no-camping zones, which were intended to curb the spread of encampments and clear streets. She voted against dozens of them on the council but later said she would not block them if elected mayor.Raman’s positions on policing in the city have also changed. She once talked of a department that would be much smaller and posted “defund the police” on social media in 2020. She did not support the mayor’s 2023 police contract, which she said was too expensive for the financially strapped city. More recently, she said the Los Angeles Police Department should remain at its current size, about 8,600, down from about 10,000 in 2020. The police union has taunted her in ads, calling her “Flip Floppin’ Raman.”In diverse Los Angeles, mayors are elected by building coalitions, ethnically and geographically. And to surpass 50% of the vote and win, Raman will need to find more supporters.“I don’t think it’s impossible, but she is going to have to expand beyond her ideological base,” said Democratic consultant Bill Carrick, who sees Bass as vulnerable.“The people who didn’t vote for Nithya weren’t voting against her, they were voting for somebody else. Karen (Bass) had a good number of people who were voting against her,” Carrick added. Though Raman and Pratt are political opposites, both have attracted voters who aren’t happy with the city’s status quo.Tanika Vickers, who works for a housing nonprofit in Los Angeles, said that she felt like she was part of a group of people who work and pay taxes but have been “forgotten.” She said she was frustrated with the way tax dollars were being spent, especially “throwing” more money toward homelessness without results. She said she voted Raman for mayor because she was most qualified to execute her plans and fulfill what the city needs.“I think that we are all looking for change,” she said. Donald Trump booed at Madison Square Garden as he makes history as first sitting president to attend NBA Finals game
President Donald Trump made it to Madison Square Garden on Monday night. Trump, a native New Yorker, attended Game 3 of the NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs in Manhattan on Monday. The president was seated for the game in a box above the first bowl at the arena with protective glass on each side of it. But Trump’s presence inside Madison Square Garden was not necessarily a welcome one. After passing several protests on the way in, he was hit with a loud chorus of boos from fans when he was first shown on screens during the national anthem.Trump is now officially the first sitting United States president to attend an NBA Finals game. He’s attended several notable sporting events in the past, including the college football championship earlier this year in Miami and a session at the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black last fall. He revealed earlier this month that he was invited by Knicks owner James Dolan to attend.Trump has also attended several UFC fights throughout his time in and out of office. He is planning to host UFC Freedom 250 on the South Lawn of the White House on Sunday, too, in what would be a historic first — though a lawsuit was filed this weekend in an effort to stop it from happening. Trump’s presence at the game, and the strong reaction from fans in the arena, comes amid what’s been a turbulent stretch for him. His approval ratings held around 35% in the latest Reuters/Ipsos poll, which is near the lowest levels of his political career.“I found out [he was coming] because Jim Dolan invited him to the game, and he said yes,” commissioner Adam Silver said about Trump on ESPN before the game, adding that Trump was a “genuine Knicks fan” who used to have courtside seats for the Knicks.“He’s welcome to be here. I think that what makes sports so special, especially when there’s so much that divides people, is it’s something that we have in common, and we should look for those things that we have in common and build off that.”Trump's 'inconvenient' presence led to long delays, security changesOf course, Trump's presence came with increased security both in and around Madison Square Garden on Monday. There were perimeter fences set up around Madison Square Garden and long lines to get into the building even as early as Monday morning, which led to headaches for arena staffers and even players. Spurs guard De'Aaron Fox said accessing the arena was like "getting screened by TSA.""I think the president being here just makes it inconvenient on everybody else," Fox said before the game. "We've got more, obviously more security … Obviously, we're getting screened like it's TSA. [It's] a little inconvenient for the people that's gotta play. It is what it is."Fans were also encouraged to show up "at least two hours" before tip, and a "strict no-bag policy" was put in place. The traditional watch party outside of Madison Square Garden was canceled as a result, too, though mayor Zohran Mamdani put together a free event nearby. The lines outside of the arena more than three hours before tip were incredibly long.“Yes, there’s some inconvenience to the fans here,” Silver said. “But one, looking around at the arena, it’s packed. So people listened, they came early, they got through whatever extra security, which is necessary.”Mamdani, meanwhile, revealed earlier on Monday that he purchased a standing-room-only ticket for the game for nearly $1,000. The Knicks entered Game 3 on Monday night with a 2-0 lead in the series after taking both of the first two contests in San Antonio. The Knicks have won 13 straight games, dating back to their opening-round series with the Atlanta Hawks. The franchise is looking for its first NBA title since 1973, and Monday’s contest was the first NBA Finals game for the team at home since 1999.

Bloomington South boys golf sees sectional streak come to an end
BLOOMINGTON — One streak is over. There's another Bloomington South's boys golf team must focus on now to make their season complete. The Bloomington North Sectional that started in forecasted rain on Monday, June 8 at Cascades Golf Course, finished with a more surprising reign as unranked Brownstown Central earned it's first postseason title in school history. The Braves overcame top competitors No. 19 South, Bloomington North, Bedford North Lawrence and Edgewood with four scores of 77 or better for a meet best 301. Just 19 shots separated the top five as South moved on with a 308 as did North with a 309. but BNL (315) and Edgewood (320) were left to rue a handful of shots that could have made all the difference.More: Bloomington South wins IHSAA baseball regional title on walk-off homer"You've got to bring it," South coach Dustin Carver said. "I kind of defined our round today as playing fearful. Not playing fearless from what I saw. Just some swings were very hesitant."You can't play that way. That's my mindset as a person and as a coach and I try to instill that in our players. I'm proud of Colton coming in first and doing his thing. But you can't play fearful and expect to win."South did claim the medalist as senior Colton Watson repeated as champ with a 1-under 70. He won by three strokes, but the tough part was knowing the Panthers' 11-year run of team titles was over."It's a little up and down," said Watson, a four-year varsity player. "We've had our lows, we've had our highs. We've played some really good rounds with four scores and we've played some pretty bad tournaments."But it's a little disappointing to not get the win."It's not been smooth sailing this season for the Panthers as they worked their way through their usually tough schedule and had to shift practices to Eagle Point with the Bloomington Country Club finishing up it's course makeover. That said, South's streak of six straight appearances at state is on the line next week at the Washington Regional. The Panthers have been to state 10 of the last 11 years."I think we just block this out," Watson said. "We're obviously through, so we've got Thursday to focus on regionals. Bigger tournament, so why can't we win that one?"Karl Bailey had a 77, Easton Bellini an 80 and Owen Wisley and Carson Gady each had 81s for South. Wisley bounced back from a 45 on the Pine to finish with a 36."Colton, Carson and Karl have been right there," Carver said. "Colton and Carson have played really well. Your 4s and 5s have to play well to produce a good score and to get to where we need to."We played well the second 18 at Delaware (Country Club in Muncie). We shot a 301 there and to me, it's a lot tougher course than Cascades."It was raining when Watson teed off and the humidity made sure he never dried out. But he did heat up a bit with a 33 after making the turn."I'm drenched in sweat today," Watson said. "It's maybe the hottest non-sunny day I've ever been in. But I had a couple mental mistakes on the (Pine). I shot 1-over and then, made a couple mistakes on 1, 2 and 3, but then I saw a birdie go in and I made three in a row."All around, I played pretty well."Owen Valley's Cunningham makes jumpOwen Valley senior Jake Cunningham made a big jump this year, going from an 81 last year to a high school career best 2-over 73 this time to take third place after Brownstown's Eli Downing (73) won a playoff tie-breaker.Owen Valley was ninth (361), but Cunningham will make his first trip to regional."Started off on the front nine a little wonky but I kind of came back on the back nine," Cunningham said. "I started hitting the shots I wanted to and made some putts, some clutch putts. I had a really good save on the par 5 on the Pine, a long putt for bogey because I hit a tree."Cunningham is the first Patriot to advance since OV was moved to the Bloomington Sectional from Martinsville where Kolton Jackson (2022), Mason Elkins (2021) and Colby Beckwith (2019) most recently got out.Nerves got the best of him last year but his focus kept him in control this time."Driving here, I had the mindset of, 'This is everything I've ever worked for. This is where all my work pays off. So I was coming here with that mindset and on the first tee, it was 'Go' mode. I had the switch and kept it on until my last putt."North gets the job doneThe Cougars were led by freshman Ryan Decker with a 74 to tie for fourth, while seniors took care of the rest: Alec Freund had a 76, Zayan Farzad a 77 and Rex Speer an 82. It was a tight race and a group effort got it done."Great group of guys," Farzad said . "We've grown a lot this year to keep our scores relatively low. We've been playing good as of recently, but yeah, there's a lot of shots that we could have taken back."I think we really could've won this thing. But we're happy to make it out. We're happy to compete at regionals and play well hopefully."Decker, Farzad and Freund all had steady rounds.More: Bloomington North has the heart to win first IHSAA boys state track title"I've been playing good recently, I haven't shot above 80 in a month," Farzad said. "So I've just been having really good confidence in my game recently. And I was just telling the team, as a captain, we've just got to hone in, take advantage, this is our home course."Keep it down the middle, limit your mistakes and score when you can."That time was the Quarry 9 for Speer, who struggled to a 47 on the Pine before shooting even par (35) after the turn. "We were happy as a team to get out," Carmichael said. "(Assistant coach Ben) EuDaly probably said it best after the round. I think all of them showed a good amount of fight today. Because if you look at their nine-hole splits, most of them had a three or four-hole stretch that was just real bad."The sport is set up where it is easy to quit, just phone it in. Rex shot a 47 on his front and came back with a 35 and I think that's a great example of he could have easily just phoned it and said, 'That's OK, James (Johnson) will play just fine."North upped the quality and quantity of its schedule this year."I know the kids are tired," Carmichael said. "And they showed a good amount of perseverance today. Just stay out there and get it done."It was a very competitive sectional. But we didn't really focus on any of the other teams or any of the others players. Just how do we play this course? If you can't play on your home course, you can't play well."Edgewood, BNL come up shortEdgewood sophomore Teigan Hulbert, who was a somewhat surprising regional qualifier last year, fell short this time with an 81, a tough thing to swallow after the season that he had.Freshman Caleb Garrett led the Mustangs with a 79 while Hank Ripley and the lone senior, Jaxson Collier, each had 80s. Ike Wilkie also had an 81."You take away some three-putts and some bad double bogeys and we're right there," Edgewood coach Garry Lee said. "The only silver lining is Collier is the only one graduating."Teigen got off to an awful start and had an awful ninth hole and then played pretty well on the (Pine)."At the same time, Ike Wilkie was 10 shots better than last year. Hank shot 80 again. He's right there. Caleb's been kind of a nice surprise as a freshman. He's been our medalist a couple times. It's disappointing to think how close we really were."BNL will still be represented at regional by Evan Tillett, who tied for fourth with a 74, and Hudson Martin, one of four players who tied at 77. Mitchell shot a 414, led by a 99 from Jackson Dralee.Lighthouse Christian played in the sectional for the second time, shooting a 455, led by a 95 from Nathan Biggs. Washington Regional previewIn the field at Country Oaks will be favorite No. 5 Castle (which shot 283) when play tees off at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, June 11, joined by other sectional champions Forest Park (299), Barr-Reeve (304), Terre Haute North (310) and Brownstown. Also there are Evansville Memorial (302) and the host Hatchets. All of that, however, is immaterial to the Cougars and Panthers."We've just got to focus on ourselves," Watson said. "We need to play good golf, one shot at a time and not worry about all the outside noise."BLOOMINGTON NORTH SECTIONALTeam scores (top 3 advance to regional): Brownstown Central 301, Bloomington South 308, Bloomington North 309; Bedford North Lawrence 315, Edgewood 320, Seymour 333, Brown County 351, Salem 352, Owen Valley 361, West Washington 367, Trinity Lutheran 374, Mitchell 414, Lighthouse Christian 455.Top 10 individuals: 1. CB Markez Davis commits to the Tigers
BATON ROUGE, LA - OCTOBER 11: Secondary Coach Corey Raymond of the LSU Tigers in action against the South Carolina Gamecoks on October 11, 2025 at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. (Photo by Gus Stark/LSU/University Images via Getty Images) The Lane Train keeps rolling down the 2027 recruiting trail. The LSU Tigers have landed their first defensive back commitment in the 2027 class with the addition of Markez Davis.Davis is a highly underrated prospect and a true multi-sport athlete. In addition to football, he also excels on the basketball court, where he has already scored more than 1,000 career points. On the football field, he plays both wide receiver and defensive back.Corey Raymond sees Davis as a cornerback, and his measurables help explain why. The 3-star prospect from Northwest High School in Opelousas, Louisiana, checks in at 6-foot-3 and 180 pounds. That is the prototypical frame for a Corey Raymond corner at LSU.Davis may remind Tiger fans of Greedy Williams—a lower-rated prospect with tremendous upside who possesses the physical traits coaches look for at the position. He is eager to come in and be developed by Raymond, whose track record of producing elite cornerbacks is well documented. The Lane Train is at full steam ahead, and the Tigers are far from finished. There are already rumblings that LSU is working to get another elite prospect on campus for an official visit. Another weekend of visitors is beginning to take shape, and the Tigers continue to build momentum on the recruiting trail.Who would you like to see LSU bring to campus? Or who do you think is the elite prospect the Tigers are trying to get on campus for a visit?Leave your thoughts in the comments below.

NBA boss Silver amazed at New York excitement for Finals
NBA commissioner Adam Silver arrives at Madison Square Garden ahead of game three of the NBA Finals between the San Antonio Spurs and New York Knicks (CHARLY TRIBALLEAU)NBA commissioner Adam Silver said Monday he has never seen New York so excited about any event as he has the NBA Finals as he welcomed US President Donald Trump.Silver spoke just before the start of game three of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden, where the Finals had not been played since 1999 and where the Knicks, leading the series 2-0 and on a 14-game playoff win streak, seek their first NBA crown since 1973."It's incredible. I haven't seen anything like this," Silver said."I don't remember anything here like this. I think it has so much to do with the 53-year gap from the last championship... people in this town are ready to celebrate."Among the spectators packing the arena was Trump, who had watched from courtside in the past in his days as a New York real estate developer."He's welcome to be here," Silver said. "What makes sports so special when there's so much that divides people is that there's something that we have in common and we should look for those things that we have in common and build off that."Back in the old days he had courtside seats. He was here all the time. He was at drafts. So he's a genuine Knicks fan."Expanded security measures for Trump's attendance led to fans being asked to arrive two hours before tip-off and cancellation of a watch party outside the arena."Yes, there's some inconvenience to the fans here but when looking around at the arena, it's packed, so people listened and they came early, they got through whatever extra security, which is necessary," Silver said."So as I said, I think we should be using sports to create more of a sense of community with people, not less."That NBA community has dominated New York even with a US co-hosted FIFA World Cup only days away."I haven't seen anything like it," Silver said. "The World Cup is coming to New York and I'm a big soccer fan too but all people are talking about are these Finals in town. You can feel it everywhere you go."Silver also notes the global excitement for the Knicks and Spurs, who boast French superstar Victor Wembanyama."It's not just national, it's global. The Knicks have a big following everywhere," Silver said. "People are watching and following this everywhere."js/dh

“I’m Gonna Break You” – Ilia Topuria and Justin Gaethje’s Rivalry Boils Over Before UFC Freedom 250
In less than a week, the UFC will make history by heading to the White House for the first time in its 33-year existence, hosting the Freedom 250 card to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States. The seven-fight event is stacked from top to bottom, with the main event featuring lightweight champion Ilia Topuria defending his title against interim champion Justin Gaethje. While the rivalry had remained largely respectful for much of the buildup, tensions have escalated significantly in recent days. Gaethje recently took a personal jab at Topuria’s highly publicized divorce from ex-wife Giorgina Uzcategui. The comments came after Topuria responded to a viral video in which Gaethje’s father broke down the matchup and referred to the Spaniard as being short.Speaking with Fox Australia, Gaethje did not hold back when asked about Topuria’s trademark habit of presenting a rose to opponents he has defeated. He said, “All that guy is a gimmick. He calls himself the king. He thinks he’s a God. What an annoying little bastard. I couldn’t imagine being in a room with him for 30 minutes, listening to him talk about himself. And I can say this: I would leave him. That’s all I’m saying. I would leave him. No way I would put up with his shit.”Topuria fired back in the first episode of UFC Freedom 250 Embedded, giving Gaethje a double middle-finger salute and warning him of what awaits inside the Octagon. He said, “Take this, Justin [shows middle finger]. Actually, I thought he was a great guy. But since he crossed the personal line, he’s not going to have my respect; he’s not going to have my team’s respect. All I’m going to need is 2 minutes in the octagon with you, and I’m going to put you to sleep in front of your whole family, your country, in front of everyone.” View this post on Instagram A post shared by UFC op Eurosport (@ufcopeurosport)ALSO READ:UFC Working on New Merit-Based Rankings System After Years of Dana White’s FrustrationThe war of words did not end there. Topuria has now released another statement defending his ex-wife and reiterating that Gaethje had crossed a line by bringing personal matters into the feud. Writing on X, the reigning lightweight champion stressed that, despite their separation, Uzcategui remains the mother of his daughter and deserves respect. He wrote, “Justin crossed a line. What happened between my ex-wife and me is our business. We may no longer be together, but she is the mother of my daughter. To everyone insulting her or speaking about things they know nothing about: show some respect. You don’t have to respect our relationship. But respecting someone’s mother should be one of the most basic codes in life. Be better.” Justin crossed a line. What happened between my ex-wife and me is our business. We may no longer be together, but she is the mother of my daughter. To everyone insulting her or speaking about things they know nothing about: show some respect. You don’t have to respect our…— Ilia Topuria (@Topuriailia) June 8, 2026Gaethje quickly responded, suggesting that Topuria’s reaction had only reinforced his original point. The interim champion also denied ever bringing Topuria’s ex-wife into the feud, instead accusing the lightweight champion of dragging his father into the conversation. Replying to his post on X, Gaethje wrote, “Proving my point. Insufferable little bitch boy. Never said a thing about your wife. You want to speak words to my father, then act like I crossed some line. We already fighting, buddy.”The exchange prompted one final warning from Topuria, who doubled down on his belief that Gaethje had gone too far and vowed to make him pay inside the Octagon on June 14. In a lengthy response on X, Topuria wrote, “You should’ve kept your father out of this. He was the one calling me a short guy and saying you’d smash me, all while holding a beer in his hand. Then you started talking about my divorce and telling the world you wouldn’t want to be my roommate.”He added, “Idiot. First, we’re fighting, not dating. Second, I’m not looking for a roommate. When I put you to sleep, and you’re lying there next to the rose, I’ll look at your father and ask him one simple question: Who’s the short one now? I’m gonna break you, Justin.” View this post on Instagram A post shared by MMA Orbit (@mmaorbit)Topuria enters fight week as a sizable betting favorite, with oddsmakers listing the reigning lightweight champion at nearly 7-to-1 against Gaethje. While many fans believe the American crossed a line by referencing Topuria’s personal life, the UFC has seen several high-profile rivalries fueled by similar levels of animosity. Historic feuds such as Conor McGregor vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov, Brock Lesnar vs. Frank Mir, and Cody Garbrandt vs. TJ Dillashaw all featured deeply personal tensions that added extra intrigue to their matchups.Whether the escalating hostility between Topuria and Gaethje ultimately produces an unforgettable fight remains to be seen. What is clear, however, is that the rivalry has become far more heated in the final days leading up to their June 14 showdown at the White House.

“It’ll be even tougher”, says Arthur Elias on second USA friendly
“It’ll be even tougher”, says Arthur Elias on second USA friendlyThe Brazilian Women’s National Team was at Arena Castelão on Monday night (8) for training ahead of the second match against the United States, which takes place this Tuesday at 9:30 p.m.The match in Fortaleza has already set a ticket sales record for women’s national team friendlies in the country: 38,500. The previous highest attendance belonged to the friendly against Jamaica, in Recife, in June 2024, which drew 33,272 spectators. The growing interest in women’s football is one of the great legacies that next year’s World Cup in Brazil is expected to leave behind. Since the first match against the U.S., on Saturday (6) in São Paulo, Arthur and the team have emphasized the importance of the fans and of friendlies as preparation for the World Cup.Arthur Elias has had two wins in five matches against the U.S.Credits: Lívia Villas Boas/Staff Images/CBF“We had a favorable atmosphere and, for the World Cup, we hope for even fuller stadiums. So that the public can get to know the Brazilian players even better and so that recognition and commercial investment in women’s football can grow,” the coach explained. After achieving something few national teams in the world have managed — two consecutive wins over the Americans — Arthur Elias acknowledged the scale of the next challenge. “Their mentality is very strong, which is why they are world and Olympic champions. They have quality and many options. Tomorrow will be even more difficult than the first match,” he said.Regarding the tactical setup, the coach explained that for each match, the staff defines the system according to the opponent’s resources and style of play, within the man-marking model that has been the team’s main characteristic since he took charge of the Women’s National Team.In addition to the attendance record, the match in Fortaleza could level the number of wins between the United States and Brazil in the Arthur Elias era. There have been five meetings, each more hard-fought than the last, with two wins for the Brazilians and three for the Americans. This article was translated into English by Artificial Intelligence. Trump Angrily Demands Jalen Brunson Put On Suit
NEW YORK—Growing increasingly indignant with each passing possession, President Donald Trump reportedly spent the first quarter of Monday’s Game 3 of the NBA Finals angrily demanding that Knicks guard Jalen Brunson put on a suit. “You’re telling me this guy is supposed to be the star, yet he goes out on the court wearing, what, his bathing suit?” said Trump, who reportedly leaned over the railing of his private suite and yelled that people had paid good money to attend the game and should not be “forced to look at a grown man’s knees—disgusting!” “No class. Absolutely zero class. If Scotty [Bessent] showed up to work like that, I’d slap him silly. He’d be out of a job. It’s a disgrace. A disgrace to the team, a disgrace to the fans. Someone get [deceased former NBA Commissioner David] Stern on the phone. He can’t just be letting guys dress like maniacs.” Sources confirmed Trump then instructed aides to go down to the court and order Brunson to put on “a collared shirt, a jacket, slacks, and Florsheims,” adding that in all his many years of attending Knicks games, he had never once seen a slob like that allowed onto the court. It doesn't sound like the Rams will sign another QB before season
Perhaps a secondary question following the Los Angeles Rams' selection of Ty Simpson in the 2026 NFL draft was whether or not the quarterback room was complete with Matthew Stafford, Stetson Bennett and Simpson. Well, it sounds as if the Rams have no intention of adding another quarterback before the 2026 season kicks off.McVay told reporters on Monday the team isn't discussing bringing in a veteran at this point in the offseason, according to Rams reporter Adam Grosbard.Sean McVay said the Rams have not to this point discussed adding a veteran to the quarterback room ahead of training camp— Adam Grosbard (@AdamGrosbard) June 8, 2026Before the draft, McVay had indicated the team wanted to bring in another veteran — someone like Kirk Cousins or bring back Jimmy Garoppolo. Cousins signed with the Las Vegas Raiders, though, and Garoppolo is still considering retirement. Then, after Simpson was picked, McVay said Simpson would have to compete with Bennett to be Stafford's backup, but that didn't necessarily mean either would be QB2.As it appears now, the Rams will enter the 2026 season with Stafford as the starter and either Bennett or Simpson as his backup. Now, injuries or bad practices could change McVay's mind, but it also wouldn't make sense for the Rams to roster four quarterbacks if they don't want to move on from Bennett. This article originally appeared on Rams Wire: McVay, Rams not discussing signing another QB before season

But Brunson has kept close ties to his high school. He won a state championship there. He even proposed to his now-wife in the school's gym.The Stevenson basketball team shot around on Monday afternoon in the same gym where Brunson took shots a little over a decade ago. Some of his accomplishments are noted on the gym walls and his jersey retired outside the gym. He may be a big NBA star now, but those who know him say he never forgets where he came from."It means so much to coaches and our school. We're so proud of him, just for the person he is, what he's accomplished on the court, but we're more proud of the person he is," said Stevenson Assistant Coach Paul Swan.Daily Herald sportswriter Mike McGraw covered Brunson on the court in high school but also has seen him off the court supporting his sister in her games."He's just humble, polite, just a really nice kid," McGraw said.Family is a huge priority for Brunson. His father played in the NBA and is now a Knicks assistant coach. WCIU Sports Director Kenny McReynolds covered his games in high school, and the two stay in touch. Brunson even gave McReynolds a replica of his 2015 state championship ring."He sees plays three plays before they happen. He's playing chess and everybody else is playing checkers," McReynolds said.Brunson hosts a basketball camp every summer. This year, it is delayed a bit. He is a little busy with the NBA championship right now.

Karl-Anthony Towns stats vs Spurs in NBA Finals Game 3
There's no question the New York Knicks would not be two wins away from their first NBA championship in over half a century if it wasn't for the play of Karl-Anthony Towns. New York Knicks guard Jalen Brunson was far from the best offensive version of himself in Game 2 of the NBA Finals. However, just as he did in Game 1, the Knicks captain came in clutch when they needed him the most. Brunson stole the ball on an errant Victor Wembanyama pass and made the go-ahead free-throw to give the Knicks a 105-104 last-second victory over the San Antonio Spurs on Friday night. PWHL Detroit roster updates: Newest hockey players on expansion squad
And then there were five. The “PWHL Detroit” roster – we really can’t wait for an actual name to be announced – being assembled by general manager Manon Rheaume continues to take shape, with the team wrapping up Phase 2 of the expansion process with its mandated five players signed from other teams on Monday, June 8.There are still several more phases to go as the league adds four teams this season – Hamilton, Las Vegas and San Jose, in addition to Detroit – before the league’s annual entry draft, which is set for Wednesday, June 17 here in Detroit.BEHIND THE BENCH: Detroit PWHL team names Michigan native Josh Sciba head coachHere’s what we know about the newest hockey players in Detroit:Jesse CompherThe PWHL Detroit reached its quota of five free-agent signees on Monday by bringing in a forward who should at least know the way to Little Caesars Arena – Compher is the younger sister of Detroit Red Wings forward J.T. Compher. The Illinois native, who turns 27 on July 1, is coming off three seasons with the Toronto Sceptres. Compher had a breakout second campaign, with nine goals and nine assists in 30 games, but fell off in the most recent season: six goals, six assists.Compher signed a three-year deal with Detroit and should be familiar with the roster, having played with them all previously, from Wisconsin (Britta Curl-Salemme) to Toronto (Daryl Watts) to Team USA (Cayla Barnes and Hannah Bilka).Britta Curl-SalemmeCurl-Salemme signed a three-year deal on Friday, June 5, after two seasons with the Minnesota Frost. A North Dakota native who starred at Wisconsin (86 goals in 180 games), she’s easily one of the league’s most talented scorers, as she put up 11 goals and 18 assists (a single-season PWHL record) in 30 games last season. She’s also one of the most divisive players in the league, due to her social media activity advocating against trans woman athletes, as well as her recent partnership with an anti-trans athlete group, FIERCE Athlete. When her “likes” on social media for racist and transphobic posts came out before the 2024 PWHL Draft, Curl-Salemme issued an apology video, stating: "I specifically recognize my that social media activity has resulted in hurt being felt across communities in including LGBTQ+ and BIPOC individuals. I just want to apologize and take ownership of that."Still, she has been frequently booed, especially at away games – something she took ownership of last May: “"Personally, I'd rather play in front of a full crowd that's booing me than an empty one. So you know that type of passion, it's really cool to see, and you know I can't control, you know, how they may feel towards me. It's it's all in good fun, I think. They enjoy that passion and inputing it toward something. So yeah, it's fun to go there. It's fun to get a win, too."Cayla Barnes and Hannah BilkaPWHL Detroit raided one of the league’s previous expansion squads – the Seattle Torrent – for a forward and defender on Friday, June 5. Both Barnes and Bilka played for Boston College for four seasons before transferring to Ohio State in 2023, and both won gold with Team USA in February, so of course the team announced their signings jointly.Barnes, who agreed to a three-year deal, is a native Californian, though, again, she spent a season in Columbus. Her numbers last season – three goals, five assists and a plus/minus of minus-16 in 30 games – aren’t impressive, but Seattle struggled a lot last season in finishing last (by a full five points). In her rookie season, with Montreal, the native Californian put up two goals among 13 points with a minus-1 rating in 30 games.Bilka, meanwhile, agreed to a two-year deal; the Texas native had four goals and five assists in just 14 games last season – matching her goal total (four) in Milan with Team USA.Daryl WattsThe original member of PWHL Detroit signed a four-year contract – the longest deal in the history of the league, with the new CBA finally allowing for deals longer than three years – on Friday, June 5. The four-year deal, available to Watts on her “Expansion Foundational Offer” comes with a salary of at least $100,000 – a sizable bump from the $59,000 she made in her final season with the Toronto Sceptres. It’s tough to argue she’s not worth it, however – Watts, 27, has 32 career goals (second-most in PWHL history) and 31 assists over 81 games with Ottawa and Toronto, including 10 and nine, respectively, last season. This article originally appeared on Detroit Free Press: PWHL Detroit roster updates: Newest hockey players on expansion squad

Spurs vs Knicks box score: Full stats from NBA Finals Game 3
Spurs vs Knicks box score: Full stats from NBA Finals Game 3 originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.Today should be a moment Knicks fans have anticipated for about a third of a lifetime. It has been 27 years since Madison Square Garden hosted an NBA Finals game. Its not pass/fail either. An NBA Finals game is one thing. An NBA Finals Game 3 at home when already up 2-0 is a little different. The truth of the matter is the Knicks have a much better than a punchers chance to win the whole thing. While NY has known names like Earl Monroe, Bob McAdoo, Bernard King, Patrick Ewing and Carmelo Anthony, but those were not championship level 'teams'. The 2025-26 New York Knicks are a well-conditioned 'team' that has everything needed to win, while at the same time, they are not completely reliant on any one player. Not even Jalen Brunson. From a statistics standpoint, the Spurs are in trouble. Through two games, the Knicks have won each shooting stat combined. The Spurs only have a slight rebounding edge (+3). The Knicks lead in assists, steals, lower turnovers, total points scored and points scored per game. Victor Wembanyama is critically important to the Spurs' potential success. As was evident in Game 2, the Spurs cannot afford for Wemby to have a late start. He also must be a defensive presence. The Knicks have consistently gotten 17-20 per game from four different players on average throughout these playoffs. The Spurs are getting 2-4 depending on game and matchup. Where this shifts, is in the hustle stats and small things that don't always show up in the box score. OG Anunoby's length, Josh Hart's defense, Karl Anthony Towns' consistent production in the paint, the timely shooting of Landry Shamet as well as contributions from Mikal Bridges, Mitchell Robinson (when healthy) are all contributing to wins in ways the Spurs have not shown yet. Whether the President shows up or not, Madison Square Garden should be loud and raucous. Most of those fans have waited their whole adult life for this. The environment should favor the Knicks by a wide margin. However, the Spurs cannot afford to go down 3-0 with an elimination game later in the week. Tonight, should be as close to a must win scenario as possible without literally being a must win scenario. J.T. Compher's sister signs three-year deal with PWHL Detroit
Jesse Compher, the sister of Detroit Red Wings center J.T. It was during the Bulls’ first 3-peat, and Tucker witnessed what it was like to have Jordan as a leader.“Being a teammate, he forced us to get to that level,” Tucker said in 2020. “He wasn’t asking us to be Michael Jordan. But he was asking us to bring the same type of intensity and energy and effort every single day to the jobs that we were supposed to do so that we could help the team win.”Jordan demanded a lot from his teammates. However, it was for the best of the team and their individual careers. Those who joined MJ and the Bulls in the 1990s had a chance to experience success and be named champions.Although the pressure might not have worked out well for everyone, it still bore fruit.

Miles Russell qualifies for the US Open at age 17 with Tiger Woods' son on the bag
Miles Russell was among two 17-year-olds who earned a spot in the U.S. Open on Monday. Still to be determined was whether Russell brings his caddie from the 36-hole qualifier — the son of three-time champion Tiger Woods — to Shinnecock Hills next week.Russell, the No. 10 amateur in the world, survived a bogey on the first playoff hole and grabbed the fourth and final spot from the Florida qualifier. World Cup nears kickoff after pre-tournament turbulence
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has defended the World Cup's hefty ticket prices (Patrick T. Fallon)The World Cup kicks off on Thursday with FIFA betting that the enduring appeal of the greatest footballing show on earth can rise above anger at soaring ticket prices, an uneasy political climate in Donald Trump's America and the shadow of conflict in the Middle East.A record 48 teams and millions of fans are set to descend on the United States, Canada and Mexico for the first ever World Cup co-hosted by three nations, the largest and most logistically complex edition of the tournament ever staged. The action gets under way at Mexico City's iconic Estadio Azteca on Thursday, with co-hosts Mexico taking on South Africa at 3:00 pm local time (1900 GMT), launching a sprawling, nearly six-week-long spectacle that will culminate in the final at New Jersey's 82,500-seat MetLife Stadium on July 19.Can Lionel Messi, at the age of 38, settle any lingering debate about his status as the greatest player of all time by leading Argentina to a second consecutive World Cup title?Or can Messi's great rival, the 41-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo, defy father time by inspiring a talented Portugal team to its maiden World Cup win?Or will England, led by Harry Kane, finally end the country's 60-year wait for a second major international championship following their lone 1966 World Cup victory? Those questions and more will be answered over the course of a tournament that Gianni Infantino, the president of world football's governing FIFA, has bullishly hyped as "the greatest show that the planet has ever seen."- Ticket fury -Yet Infantino's breezy optimism has run into hurricane-force headwinds of scepticism during a build-up dogged by concerns over affordability, politics and conflict. The skyrocketing cost of tickets to the tournament has triggered a global backlash which has left FIFA and Infantino struggling to mount a convincing public relations defense. The most expensive ticket for the 2022 World Cup final cost around $1,600 at face value; in 2026 the most expensive face value ticket being sold by FIFA is an eye-watering $32,970.That kind of inflation has been prevalent across the tournament's 104 matches, where seats for many games remain available on secondary re-sale markets despite huge demand.Even Infantino's staunch ally, Donald Trump, has balked at the cost, reacting with surprise when told of the $1,000 price tag for tickets to the USA's opening game with Paraguay in Los Angeles on Friday -- the first game on US soil."I wouldn't pay it either, to be honest with you," the US president told the New York Post. While fans absorb the expense of travel to the tournament, other critics have questioned whether the World Cup party will be soured by the political climate in the United States.Human Rights Watch says Trump's crackdowns on immigration, demonstrations and press freedom could lead to a World Cup defined by "exclusion and fear."Those fears were fueled Monday when FIFA dropped a Somali referee from the World Cup after he was denied entry to the United States.Omar Artan was set to be the first match official from Somalia to referee at a global finals, but he was turned back when he arrived at Miami International Airport on Saturday.FIFA said it was powerless to influence the decision and announced it had omitted Artan from its 52-strong referees roster. The US-Israel military strikes launched against Iran in February have also loomed large over the tournament, where Iran are due to play three group games in the United States, starting with their opener against New Zealand on June 15.Trump initially suggested Iran should withdraw from the tournament for their own "life and safety" before walking back his rhetoric.Iran meanwhile have switched their base camp from Tucson, Arizona to the Mexican city of Tijuana, where they touched down early Sunday. While Iran's players are free to travel in and out of the United States, some 15 administrative and management staff have been denied visas by US authorities in a move Iranian authorities have condemned as "deliberate and discriminatory treatment."- Expanded field -On the field, the decision to expand the tournament to 48 teams -- up from 32 in 2022 -- is likely to strip the group stage of any sense of jeopardy.A total of 72 first-round matches will be needed to eliminate just 12 teams, with 32 advancing to the knockout rounds -- the top two finishers in each of the 12 first ground groups along with the eight best third-place finishers. The tournament will see a range of other innovations. For the first time in World Cup history, every game will feature cooling breaks in the middle of each half, a measure designed to mitigate the effects of searing heat and humidity expected at many of the tournament's 16 venues.Players and referees will need to adjust to several new rules being rolled out at the World Cup, including teams being required to make substitutions inside 10 seconds to prevent time-wasting. A crackdown on racist abuse will see players risk a red card for covering their mouth with a hand, arm or shirt during a confrontation with an opponent.Next month's final, meanwhile, could well be the longest on record due to the decision to stage a Super Bowl-style halftime show, headlined by Madonna, Shakira and BTS.The show means the half-time interval will be stretched from the traditional 15 minutes to around 25 minutes.rcw/gj

49ers defensive trio ranks among NFL's best despite major injuries
Every defense has levels. The defensive line is where the edge rushers and interior players live, the linebackers patrol the middle of the field and the secondary covers the rest of the field behind the defense. As such, teams want top-tier talent at all three levels, top to bottom. The San Francisco 49ers have one of the best trios of defensive stars at those three sections of the field, according to Sports Illustrated's Gilberto Manzano. He ranked the 49ers' group of Nick Bosa, Fred Warner and Deommodore Lenoir as the seventh-best triplets in the league heading into the 2026 season. The names are impressive, but this trio has plenty to prove after Bosa and Warner missed most of the 2025 season due to injuries. They’re also getting closer to 30, but Warner was playing at an elite level before sustaining a broken ankle in October. He might have been in the running for Defensive Player of the Year had he stayed healthy. As for Bosa, it’s been a while since we’ve seen dominance from him. His play has declined since recording 18.5 sacks in 2022. Perhaps Bosa does more damage playing next to new teammate Osa Odighizuwa, whom the 49ers acquired in a trade with the Cowboys. Some of this high ranking is based on pedigree alone, as Bosa and Warner are still elite but have some question marks heading into the season while they recover from 2025 injuries. The 49ers could do with a better top secondary player as well, although Lenoir is no slouch. While this group didn't have a great season this past year, the trio is still an elite group that should continue to wreak havor on opposing offenses with new defensive coordinator Raheem Morris at the controls. This article originally appeared on Niners Wire: Fred Warner highlights 49ers' top-10 defensive trio in NFL for 2026

Caitlin Clark leads Fever over Mystics with last-second go-ahead 3-pointer
On the verge of a loss after giving up a big lead, Caitlin Clark hit a dagger. The Indiana Fever guard hit a big three in the final seconds of the game to pull the Fever ahead after a late comeback from the Washington Mystics.Indiana was up by as many as 16 points before Washington started to come back in the fourth quarter. The Mystics finally took the 74-73 lead with less than a minute remaining in the game, off a layup from Shakira Austin.Clark then had a chance to give the Fever the lead with a pair of free throws, but uncharacteristically missed both. It was a layup from Kelsey Mitchell a few seconds later that ended giving Indiana back the lead, but Mystics guard Sonia Citron took it back with two free throws to bring it to 76-75.That left it all to Clark, who was left wide-open outside the arc as Sophia Cunningham inbounded the ball, and who hit the shot that ended up being the game-winner.Washington was playing without forward Kiki Iriafen, who exited the game early in the second quarter. Iriafen landed awkwardly on her leg after battling under the net with Aliyah Boston, and had to be helped off the court; Iriafen was later ruled out with a right ankle sprain. With Iriafen out, and Citron off to an usually slow start, Washington’s comeback was powered by starting forward Michaela Onyenwere, who finished with a team-high 17 points. On the Fever end, Clark lead both teams with 19 points, her most points in a five-game span. This story will be updated.

Jones, who spent six years with the Sun before coming to New York in 2023, had her No. 35 jersey retired by Connecticut before the game.Connecticut got within 85-80 with 45.9 seconds remaining — the closest the Sun had been in the fourth quarter. Then, Pauline Astier drove into the lane at the other end for a layup attempt that didn’t hit the rim, but Stewart got the offensive rebound and putback.Betnijah Laney-Hamilton scored 11 points off the bench for New York (8-4), which has won five straight games. Caitlin Clark's last-second 3-pointer gives Fever a 78-76 victory over Mystics
WASHINGTON (AP) — Caitlin Clark's 3-pointer with 1.2 seconds left gave the Indiana Fever a 78-76 victory over the Washington Mystics on Monday night.Washington rallied from a 17-point deficit and led by one after Sonia Citron's two free throws with 4.3 seconds remaining, but after a timeout, Clark caught a crosscourt pass and was all alone after Cotie McMahon went for the steal and missed. From just in front of the logo on the left wing, Clark's shot hit nothing but net. After Washington advanced the ball to midcourt, Aliyah Boston broke up the inbound pass and the Fever held on.Clark finished with 19 points. She scored 10 in the first quarter, and although she picked up her third foul in the second, Indiana made it to halftime with a 43-29 lead. A four-point play by Clark pushed the advantage to 17 in the third.Washington, which lost second-year standout Kiki Iriafen to a sprained ankle, battled back and led 74-73 after a layup by Shakira Austin. Then Clark missed two free throws with 36 seconds to play, but after a turnover by Austin, Clark found Kelsey Mitchell in transition for a layup that gave the Fever a one-point lead with 11.3 to go.Citron received a pass cutting to the basket and drew a foul to put Washington ahead, but Clark made the most of her last shot.Mitchell scored 15 points for the Fever and Boston added 14. Michaela Onyenwere led the Mystics with 17.It was Clark's second big last-second shot against the Mystics this season. Her 3-pointer with 1.7 seconds left forced overtime last month, but Washington went on to win 104-102.This game wasn't nearly as high-scoring. Clark wasn't called for any more fouls after her third, but three Indiana players and two from Washington finished with five.Up nextFever: Host Chicago on Thursday night.Mystics: Host Toronto on Friday night.___AP WNBA: https://apnews.com/hub/wnba-basketball

Southpaw Dominates North of the Border: Phillies 5, Blue Jays 2
Jun 8, 2026; Toronto, Ontario, CAN; Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Cristopher Sanchez (61) pitches to the Toronto Blue Jays during the second inning at Rogers Centre. Mandatory Credit: John E. Sokolowski-Imagn Images | John E. Sokolowski-Imagn Images Some years ago, I learned that Canada has a fast food chain known as New York Fries. I am from New York, and I do not know of any particular connection between that fair city (state? I assume it’s named for the city?) and fries. I have always been somewhat baffled by this. Sort of like how the Blue Jays were baffled by Cristopher Sánchez tonight. The game started when Kyle Schwarber and Trea Turner struck out and grounded out respectively. Turner wasn’t sent down on a force out, but rather on a tag, as an errant throw pulled Vladimir Guerrero Jr. off the bag. Bryce Harper made it to first when Toronto left fielder Yohendrick Piñango misjudged a fly’s trajectory just enough, with the ball bouncing off his glove for an error. Harper would’ve had more than one base, but he missed the bag as he rounded first, and had to turn back. Everyone was just a little off, a tad confused, like I was when I discovered that Canadian Smarties aren’t the same as American Smarties (they’re like M&Ms, but with a slightly thicker shell. Highly recommended, if you can find them). The bottom of the first, happily, was quite ordinary, as Sánchez handled the Jays with his usual efficiency. The fireworks in the top of the second were of a more favorable sort. With two outs, Bryson Stott worked a double, and Adolis García sent a slider soaring swiftly into the SkyDome seats (Disclaimer: I am aware it is now the Rogers Center. For the sake of alliteration, I choose to ignore this). The third inning saw the Phillies load the bases without a hit: two walks and a hit by pitch. They got their first hit of the inning via Alec Bohm, who sent one through the gap on the left side of the infield to score one. Realmuto sent his pitch right up the middle to score another. Stott’s patience at the plate must make him frustrating for any pitcher; even more so when the bases are loaded for the third consecutive batter. Stott walked, and the Phillies had more baserunners in the inning than Saskatchewan has lentils (Saskatchewan is a leading producer of lentils). The Jays put Phillies out at home on the next two balls in play, and the Phillies ended the inning up 5-0, having thoroughly tortured the passerine pitcher. The Jays put their first runner on via Myles Straw double to lead off the third, advanced him via groundout, then scored him via another. That was a good development for the Jays; but it was not accompanied by more. Cristopher Sánchez continued to stymie the Jays, who lost their hitting coach when he objected to a call a little too vociferously.Corbin departed after the fourth, with Simeon Woods Richardson, winner of the prestigious “Pitcher With A Name That Absolutely Sounds Like A Character from Jeeves and Wooster” award five years running, putting the Phillies down in order. No doubt the Drones Club will be buzzing about that. They’ll buzz even more about Ernie Clement’s solo shot against Sánchez in the bottom fifth, which narrowed the Philadelphia lead to three. It seemed like it would get narrower. Piñango lead off the bottom sixth by reaching third on a ball that bounced off the wall, and then slipped away from García. The slightest mistake would score him. But Sánchez decided to reassert his dominance with a three consecutive strikeouts. He celebrated like a man who had redeemed himself from the pits of defeat. It would be tough to describe the performance that had led up to that redemption as a failure, even if it was technically beneath the lofty standard he’s set for himself in 2026. But everyone needs a struggle to overcome, so that their work may have meaning, and when you’re as ludicrously effective as Sánchez is, you have to adopt a really loose definition of struggle. If you’re a batter facing him, though, you get to go with the normal definition. Clement made it to base by singling against Sánchez in the seventh, and Straw walked, but no runs scored, because Sánchez is not particularly fazed by mortal concerns like “baserunners”. Afterwards, he took his 10 strikeouts back to the dugout and called it a day. Brad Keller took over in the eighth. Like Sánchez in the prior inning, he allowed two baserunners, via walk and single, and like Sánchez, he did not grant them the luxury of a trip home. But turnabout is fair play, and Tommy Nance, coming in for the Jays in relief for the ninth, mirrored the accomplishment: Justin Crawford and Schwarber singled, but both were stranded. The Phillies turned to Jhoan Duran to finish it. It was not one of his best performances; he didn’t record a single strikeout. But after all of the Ks produced tonight by Sánchez, he might’ve just wanted to give Phillies fans a change of pace. He allowed a double, but put the other three Jays he saw down on ground outs. That was the game. The Phillies are 36-30. The series against the Blue Jays continues Tuesday at 7:07.

Draymond Green compares Jalen Brunson to LeBron James, Steph Curry originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. When it comes to popularity, New York Knicks star guard Jalen Brunson compares to global superstars LeBron James and Steph Curry, according to Golden State Warriors Draymond Green. During an appearance on Inside the NBA ahead of Game 3 of the NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs, Green acknowledged Brunson's blossoming popularity by comparing it to the two all-time legends. “Impressive to me is, I've obviously played in six NBA Finals or whatever it is, but I played with Stephen Curry, and I played against LeBron James a lot. And the amount of Jalen Brunson jerseys I see stacks up to the amount of Stephen Curry and LeBron James jerseys you see,” Green said. “And that's what's been most impressive to me is how much support they have for this team, but in particular, how much this city has banned around that guy who's the engine in pushing this whole thing forward." WSU recruiting notebook: Cougars land commitment from Cali WR, lose one WR to Oregon
Jun. 8—PULLMAN — Washington State's recent influx of visitors has begun to bear fruit. The Cougars have secured a commitment from wide receiver Tomas Dixon, who announced his decision on Monday afternoon, becoming the 10th member of WSU's class of 2027. Listed at 5-foot-11 and 165 pounds, Dixon comes from San Joaquin Memorial High in Fresno, California.Last weekend, a host of prospects made their official visits to Pullman, and some have decided to commit to coach Kirby Moore and the Cougars. That list now includes Dixon, who hauled in 30 catches for 779 yards and eight touchdowns last fall, his junior season. Dixon also plays defensive back, where he posted 35 total tackles and two interceptions last season.Dixon turned down a handful of offers to choose WSU, including hometown Fresno State, plus Colorado State, San Diego State and Texas State, all future members of the new Pac-12. Dixon's full list of offers also includes UNLV, New Mexico, San Jose State, Hawaii and FCS clubs Idaho, Montana State, Sacramento State and Northern Arizona. For WSU, Dixon's pledge is the latest in a recent string of them. On Saturday, the Cougars earned a commitment from three-star edge rusher Colton Richter, and a day later, they reeled in one from tight end Jettson Gillam. Both Richter and Gillam made their official visits to WSU last weekend.Dixon is also the second WR in the Cougs' class of 2027, which also includes California native Adrian Barnett, who announced his commitment last week.WSU loses 3-star WR after four-day commitmentAlso on Monday, the Cougars lost three-star wide receiver Malachi Garlington, who announced he's flipping to Oregon. He spent all of four days committed to WSU.Here's the sequence of events: Late last week, the 6-foot-3, 180-pound Garlington committed to WSU, becoming maybe the gem of the Cougars' class. Then he took an official visit to Oregon, which is only a short drive from Garlington's hometown of Happy Valley, in the Portland area.On Monday, he announced his decision to decommit from WSU and pledge to Oregon. Exact details of the development are unclear, but it is another instance of the Cougars losing a high-profile recruit to a Power 4 school with more resources and name, image, likeness dollars. Washington State long has been at a disadvantage in that area, but the gap has become even more clear in the years since the traditional Pac-12 dissolved.A product of Adrienne C. Nelson High School in the Portland area, Garlington fielded offers from incoming Pac-12 programs Oregon State, Boise State, San Diego State, Fresno State and others.Garlington also competes in track and field at Adrienne Nelson High, where he recorded one first-place finish in the 100-meter dash this spring, a time of 11.71 seconds. He recorded two first-place finishes with his 4x100 relay team, plus two more first-place finishes in the long jump. His best long jump was 21 feet, 10 inches, which got him second place in one invitational in early May.Garlington's size and speed made him a hot commodity in the Northwest recruiting market, which was one reason Oregon extended an offer.WSU's updated class of 2027:—Tomas Dixon, WR, San Joaquin Memorial HS (Fresno, California)—Jettson Gillam, TE, Mountain View HS (Bend, Oregon)—Colton Richter, 3-star DE, Shadow Ridge HS (Las Vegas, Nevada)—Adrian Barnett, ATH, the King's Academy (Sunnydale, California)—Owen Yurosek, TE, Bakersfield HS (Bakersfield, California)—Ryan Harrington, 3-star QB, Anacortes HS (Washington)—Josiah Rand, 3-star LB, Chaminade HS (West Hills, California)—Marquez Wimberly, 3-star RB, Nazareth HS (Nazareth, Pennsylvania)—Lopeti Malupo, 3-star DL, Archbishop Riordan (San Francisco)—EJ Coleman, 3-star ATH, Folsom HS (Folsom, California)
