SPORTS.YAHOO.COMBrowns' QB competition between Deshaun Watson, Shedeur Sanders will likely bleed into training camp, Todd Monken saysTodd Monken made it known earlier this offseason that he hoped to identify a starting quarterback by the end of mandatory minicamp so that his players could enter training camp with a QB1.But the Cleveland Browns’ head coach told reporters Tuesday at minicamp, just two days before his team’s offseason program wraps, that he’s still “not there yet.”“That's the reality of it,” Monken said, when explaining how the position battle between Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders remains unresolved."I'm not going to name a No. 1 [by the end of minicamp]. So that I am not going to name,” Monken said.Monken stopped himself."Chances are, I will not," he clarified. He then continued: "Now, once we get to the fall, we'll have to dissect the reps how we see fit. I just don't see it after the way Shedeur's played and Deshaun's played. They've both played well enough to earn the right to compete to start."Watson is a three-time Pro Bowler but hasn’t earned that recognition since the 2020 season. Sanders started the team’s final seven games during the 2025 campaign. The former Colorado star helped the Browns collect three of their five wins yet posted more interceptions than touchdown passes and a sub-60% completion percentage along the way. While Monken noted during voluntary minicamp in April that he wouldn’t consider the QB competition “a two-man race,” he said last week amid OTAs that he believes the Browns have “two starting-level quarterbacks.”Dillon Gabriel is the odd man out. Gabriel, who starred at UCF, Oklahoma and Oregon, was drafted before Sanders last year and got a crack at the top gig before him, too. A third-round pick, he started six games amid the 2025 campaign but didn’t run away with the job prior to suffering a concussion that thrust Sanders into the lineup.Aside from Gabriel, the only other player on Cleveland’s QB depth chart is rookie Taylen Green, a sixth-rounder who needs time to develop at the position yet oozes with athleticism. "I would have hoped [to name a starter], but I like both of them," Monken said Tuesday of Watson and Sanders. "I don't know what to say. It's really as simple as that. I like both of them, and we haven't had the pads on. That's the hard thing. As much as I'd love to have made that decision, either by someone separating themselves upward or downward, either way, which has not occurred, and we haven't even gotten to practicing against an opponent, putting the pads on, having a controlled scrimmage or playing preseason games. “I would have loved to — I was being honest. I think you'd love to have the starter named. I just can't do it.”0 التعليقات 0 المشاركات 35 مشاهدة 0 معاينة

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWe know what Joe Pavelski really thinks of Maple Leafs head coach jobWe know what Joe Pavelski really thinks of Maple Leafs head coach job originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.Joe Pavelski wasn't in the rumors initially. But this week, the long-time San Jose Sharks and Dallas Stars legend emerged as a candidate for the open head coach job with the Toronto Maple Leafs. It was a shocking report initially, but it's real, and Pavelski appears to be clearly in the running. The most important thing: He wants the job.NHL insider Darren Dreger has reported that Pavelski hasn't just been contacted -- he's expressed that he is interested.Pavelski has coached his son Nate "at the youth level" in Madison, Wisconsin, according to insider Elliotte Friedman. It would make him a bit like when the Canadiens hired Martin St. Louis.MORE: Dylan Larkin's trade request points out a major NHL flawPavelski, 41, is an all-time great player who skated in 1,332 NHL games and finished with 476 goals and 592 assists. He was just a seventh-round pick by the San Jose Sharks but became one of their best players ever. He wrapped up his career with the Dallas Stars, and probably could've kept playing if he had wanted to.Instead, Pavelski retired, and whether or not he saw this as his next step, it has now emerged as an option.Pavelski isn't Canadian, and he never played for an NHL team in Canada, but his high-level playing experience could likely help him handle some of the high-octane Toronto pressure. There's no way to know for sure what's coming next, but the fact that Pavelski is interested seems like it'll bring him deep into the running.More NHL news:Canadiens had a trade agreed to, but they missed by 1 minuteHenrik Sedin's son is excelling in a different sportElias Petersson trade plans may be missing a key pointWould the Maple Leafs trade Easton Cowan?Alex Ovechkin's mom is playing a role in his retirement decision0 التعليقات 0 المشاركات 35 مشاهدة 0 معاينة

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWho are NFL's top 5 defensive players? On the latest episode of Yahoo Sports' "Football 301," host Nate Tice and guest Diante Lee of The Ringer set out to answer an offseason debate: which defenders are set to define the 2026 NFL season?Tice and Lee drafted their top picks for a one-year, all-defensive draft, ranking their selections by a blend of advanced stats, positional value and the all-important "culture-setter" factor. Here's a recap of their consensus top-five defenders and some of the reasoning behind their choices. These five defenders were highlighted not just for their raw production, but also their ability to transform schemes, elevate teammates, and serve as centerpieces for Super Bowl-caliber units. According to Nate Tice and Diante Lee, expect them to be the most influential defensive forces of the 2026 season.1. Will Anderson Jr., Houston Texans, EDGEFor Lee, the top pick had to be Anderson, the Texans' superstar edge rusher. Lee praised Anderson's "explosion in sack production," pointing to his 12 sacks last season and his dominance as a run defender, which Lee argued was the best at his position league-wide.Advanced stats back it up: Anderson posted a 97th percentile sack rate and an equally elite QB hit rate. His relentless style sets the tone for the Texans' defense, transforming what it means to play defensive end in Houston.Play 2026 Soccer Pick 'Em with FOX One and make your picks for the world's biggest soccer tournament2. Myles Garrett, Los Angeles Rams, EDGETice followed up by selecting Garrett, now a key piece on the Rams. The panel described Garrett as "one of the true best players in football" and "one of the best players I've ever seen in my life"Garrett's transition to L.A. is a potential game-changer, reminiscent of era-defining trades like Randy Moss to the Patriots and Reggie White to the Packers (11:32). Garrett's ability to disrupt both run and pass sets him apart, and Lee suggested that L.A.'s infrastructure could unlock his very best season yet.3. Micah Parsons, Green Bay Packers, EDGELee emphasized Parsons' "transformational" traits, his perennial 2%+ sack rate and his ability to single-handedly elevate the run and pass defense. Parsons' on-off splits, where Green Bay's defense plummets in his absence, drive home just how rare his impact can be.The consensus: if he's healthy, few defenders can change a game like Parsons.Micah Parsons is no stranger to double teams. (Photo by Justin Edmonds/Getty Images)Justin Edmonds via Getty Images4. Pat Surtain II, Denver Broncos, CBSurtain is described as "one of the best corners I've ever watched" and "the prototype" at the position, thanks to a rare blend of size, speed, quickness and football IQ. Both hosts compared Surtain's effect to Darrelle Revis: eliminate half the field, force quarterbacks to look elsewhere and anchor any coverage shell.5. Chris Jones, Kansas City Chiefs, DTRounding out the top five is Jones, a true game-wrecker. Lee couldn't leave Jones off his board, citing his penchant for taking over games, especially in critical moments like the second half vs. Indianapolis last year. While Jones "picks and chooses his spots," when he's engaged, he's simply "unblockable." His presence fundamentally redefines what offenses are able to do, even if the box sheet doesn't always show a 10-tackle, 3-sack stat line. For more on the NFL, listen to "Football 301" wherever you get your podcasts.0 التعليقات 0 المشاركات 35 مشاهدة 0 معاينة

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMQuick notes from Purdue Basketball’s first summer practice: Welcome to the CJ Cox EraDec 5, 2024; University Park, Pennsylvania, USA; Purdue Boilermakers guard CJ Cox (0) defends as Penn State Nittany Lions guard Ace Baldwin Jr (1) looks to dribble the ball up court during the second half at Bryce Jordan Center. Penn State defeated Purdue 81-70. Mandatory Credit: Matthew O'Haren-Imagn Images | Matthew O'Haren-Imagn Images We’re excited to continue to partner with SpaceVault for all your local storage needs in Lafayette, Indiana.SpaceVault Self-Storage is more than just a spot to store your extra stuff. We’re a local partner here to make things easier for everyone in Lafayette—residents, students, and businesses alike. SpaceVault started in Lafayette with a pretty simple idea: we wanted storage to be safe, easy to use, and truly focused on what our customers need. It’s been a long, long winter. And yet it seems like just yesterday that we were saying goodbye to Braden Smith, Fletcher Loyer, Trey Kaufman-Renn, and Oscar Cluff.Because of how Matt Painter has been able to recruit and build his program through large, talented classes that stay together, Purdue has avoided the year over year turmoil and roster resets that have plagued programs that have lived on one year five-stars and building teams through the portal. That means for most summers, Purdue knows what to expect from its teams. Braden Smith, Fletcher Loyer, and Trey Kaufman-Renn started in a national title game three years ago, and then still had two more years leading Purdue. That kind of stability has allowed Purdue to get a head start in summer, adding enhancement pieces and adding to already built chemistry and plilosophy understanding. Purdue started four seniors last season with the addition of big man Oscar Cluff. This season, Purdue has just one likely rotation player that’s a senior in Princeton transfer Caden Pierce. Pierce was one of the most sought after pieces in the transfer portal after sitting out last year to work on his game while graduating from Princeton and prepare himself for one final season at a major conference. He has been playing for Team USA’s 3×3 team in the spring. But what’s most striking for Purdue, is that it is running it back with every player that didn’t graduate last season. There were plenty of questions at the end of the season with experienced back ups and redshirt guards in the wing that players could look for bigger roles elsewhere. Instead, Purdue will lean heavily on its returning players as they step into expanded roles and bigger responsibilities. Today was the first day media members got to sit in on a Purdue summer practice.Let’s hit some quick notes and observations from the new era of Purdue basketball:– Sinan Huan has a lot of work to do. He was probably the most not ready player today. That said, it’s early. Players can develop rapidly but Painter mentioned he’s not done trying to fill out the roster. It’s still possible Purdue adds a big with experience and Huan’s pressure to be ready this season becomes almost nothing. His intangibles and size combined with his ability to move keeps him one of the more intriguing prospects to come to Purdue. – Sometimes us media members see the exact same thing at the same time. During an offensive five on five drill, Kraig Bowers from Boilers in the Stands came up to me and said River Knight looks comfortable. Probably not a better compliment for a freshman this early in his career. Rivers has size enough to play the four and PJ Thompson told me after practice that he loves what he’s seen from Knight and that there’s not a shot he hasn’t liked in practice. – Thompson also lit up talking about freshman Luke Ertel. Ertel is a stud. Also, from Thompson’s words it’s evident Ertel will play a role on this team from day one. There’s nothing he can’t do on the court. – Jacob Webber is going through the struggle of figuring out what’s a good shot for him at this level. Possibly some uncomfortableness early on has the usually elite shot maker looking a little off with his jumper. He’ll be one of the most difficult to predict a role for next year. His shooting upside and decent size make him a prototypical wing for Painter But shooters can also struggle the most with adjusting to a new offense and level of play. – Matt Painter after practice was very open about needing more from CJ Cox. Cox has the most experience on the team but Painter needs him to transform. His off court personality can’t be his on court personality. He wants Cox to not be so nice while Thompson wants him to shoot, shoot, and shoot more. The offense will likely be run by Mayer, but the coaches seem to think the team is Cox’s. Cox is Purdue’s best scorer and they will need all the scoring he can provide. – Caden Pierce looked composed, a veteran. He did drills mostly as a wing and guard, Purdue clearly plans to use him with the ball in his hands. He should do a lot of everything for Purdue. – Painter made it clear after practice that he sees Burgess as both a 4/5. Burgess has added 15 pounds of muscle or so and lost fat. He’s changed his body and shot. All that remains is for him to finally stay healthy. – Antione West just does something different on the court. His size and physicality at the guard spot combined with his shot making makes him an ultimate X factor. Coach Thompson said he’s still adjusting back to life away from the practice team and redshirting but he’s a different gear for a team that will need shot making with the ball. – The offense is Mayer’s. He’s continued to build his relationship with offensive coordinator PJ Thompson and expect Thompson to orchestrate an offense that will use Mayer in a different way than the spark plug role he played last year. – Jacobsen is thicker. He’s still an athletic freak. He looked more comfortable entering year three. If there’s anyone most likely to take a leap, it’s the big man.0 التعليقات 0 المشاركات 35 مشاهدة 0 معاينة

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMCharles Barkley refuses to blame Knicks loss on TrumpCredit: ESPN, USA TODAY Network via Reuters ConnectThe New York Knicks lost Game 3 of the NBA Finals in front of a Madison Square Garden crowd that included Donald Trump, but Charles Barkley isn’t blaming the president.Monday night was the first time the Knicks lost a game in 46 days and fans don’t know how to handle it. After trailing the Atlanta Hawks 2-1 in the first round of the playoffs, the Knicks went on a historic run, racking up 13 straight wins including two against the San Antonio Spurs to open the NBA Finals. But upon returning home for Game 3 of the NBA Finals, the streak is over, and some are attempting to blame Trump’s presence.Cardi B, who made her presence known at the Garden, claimed Trump brought a “dark” energy to the game. Stephen A. Smith eagerly faulted Trump for ruining the winning streak after previously begging the president to stay away from New York during the Finals. After the game, Charles Barkley was asked by TMZ whether Trump being in attendance made it harder for the players, but the Inside the NBA analyst refused to join Smith and others in placing any blame on the president.“No, sh*t no,” Barkley said. “That had nothing to do with it. The Spurs outplayed them. The Knicks gotta find a way to get off to a better start. But it was one of the coolest environments I’ve ever been a part of.”Barkley said Monday night at the Garden was an incredible atmosphere, crediting the stars who were in the building and the energy coming from the fans. And while Smith might be looking to pick an easy fight with Trump, Barkley is right in noting the president’s attendance isn’t why the Knicks lost. There are reasons to criticize Trump for attending the game, like causing a gridlock in midtown Manhattan, requiring fans to arrive hours early, or forcing watch parties that have become a staple of the Knicks playoff run to be relocated or canceled. But none of that impacted the players or the atmosphere inside the arena at tip-off. As much as some fans might want to find a scapegoat after the Knicks lost their first game since April 23, Barkley is probably right in noting Trump isn’t it.The post Charles Barkley refuses to blame Knicks loss on Trump appeared first on Awful Announcing.0 التعليقات 0 المشاركات 35 مشاهدة 0 معاينة

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMNew York Mayor Zohran Mamdani says Knicks watch party outside MSG back on for Game 4A handful of Knicks fans gathered outside Madison Square Garden on Tuesday to burn cleansing sage, hoping to purge whatever bad energy was left behind from Monday’s loss to the San Antonio Spurs in Game 3 of the NBA Finals.Maybe it’s working, because New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced on X.com Tuesday evening that a watch party for Game 4 is back on outside MSG."We have approved a ticketed MSG watch party for Game 4. More details soon," Mamdani said. "As we prepare to watch together, let me be clear: this is a historic, joyful moment for our city. We will not allow it to be disrupted by violence. Be safe, take care, and celebrate responsibly." This is seemingly another indication that President Donald Trump, who stirred up strong emotions by shutting down midtown so he could attend, will not return for Game 4.ESPN’s Shams Charania had already reported Trump will not attend, citing “scheduling conflicts and obligations."Madison Square Garden Sports in a statement, though, said it has been told "that the NYPD will once again implement the same 'frozen zone' restrictions for Game 4." "The complete closing of areas around MSG is going to affect not only the celebration but also all the small businesses that rely on Garden fans for their livelihood," MSG said. Trump became the first sitting president in history to attend an NBA Finals game when he showed up at MSG on Monday at the invitation of Knicks owner James Dolan. He was booed when shown on the Jumbotron during the national anthem. His presence also forced the cancellation of the outdoor watch party outside MSG and triggered a security perimeter that had fans waiting two hours or more to get inside. The Knicks had won 13 straight games before the Spurs snapped the streak, 115-111, and fans wasted no time blaming Trump on social media. With the president staying away, New York City approved a permit for a ticketed watch party at Plaza 33 outside MSG on Wednesday night. Watch parties will also be held at Wollman Rink in Central Park and the Brooklyn Bowl. The Knicks lead the series 2-1.This article originally appeared on USA TODAY: Zohran Mamdani says Knicks watch party outside MSG back on for Game 40 التعليقات 0 المشاركات 35 مشاهدة 0 معاينة

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMMarquinhos celebrates Under-17 debut, eyes second USA friendlyMarquinhos celebrates Under-17 debut, eyes second USA friendlyWith five players, Athletico-PR was the club with the highest number of call-ups to the Brazil U-17 National Team. And right-back Marcos Pesseti, in his first opportunity wearing the Brazil shirt, celebrated not only the call-up but also his debut in the starting lineup in the friendly against the United States. With the nerves of the first match and the 4-0 win now behind him, the player hopes to earn another opportunity and expects an even more consistent team performance in this Wednesday’s clash (10).Ever since he received the news of his call-up, Marquinhos, as he is known by his teammates, has had one main mission: to keep his anxiety under control. For that, he relied on the support of his family.“It was always a dream to be here, and I managed to make it come true. Before joining up, I was very anxious to come. I talked to my mother and my family every day. But, thank God, I managed to have a good debut and perform well in the match,” said the full-back, pleased with his performance. “At the beginning, the nerves hit a little, right? But then I calmed down. I was able to focus well on the game and had a good match,” he recalled. The Athletico-PR right-back celebrated not only his first call-up, but also his debut in the starting lineupCredits: Daniel Santos / QFCThe team’s goal now is to improve on its performance from the first friendly, if not on the scoreboard, then at least in its tactical execution.“It was a game where Brazil was far superior. I think the United States team wasn’t able to put us under much pressure. Our man-marking changed their game a bit, and we were exceptional going forward as well,” he assessed. After a week of work with the Seleção, the player already feels more comfortable within the group. Having four other club teammates with him also helped in the adaptation process. In addition to Marquinhos, Athletico-PR also sent center-back Murilo Camargo, midfielder Gustavo Guedes, and forwards William Bispo and Bryan Lima.“I think it was one of the first times Athletico had five players called up at once, and that was really cool. My teammates are helping me a lot, just as I’m helping them in this first call-up. Most of us are living this experience for the first time, so things are going really well,” he concluded. This article was translated into English by Artificial Intelligence. SPORTS.YAHOO.COM“I think we contributed to the confusion by not being …The San Antonio Spurs attempted to make a substitution with just over five minutes left in Game 3 at Madison Square Garden in New York, N.Y. Initially, the substitution did not take place, but officials abruptly whistled the play dead just after the New York Knicks had inbounded the ball to try to figure out what was going on. NBA head of officiating Monty McCutchen felt that the game officials were not authoritative enough and got themselves into a mess as a result. “You have to run the game with a certain authority that isn’t overly authoritative, which can be off-putting, but also not to be in a situation in which you allow confusion, which is exactly what happened,” McCutchen said on ESPN’s “NBA Today.” “I think we contributed to the confusion by not being more authoritative in that regard, and allowed someone who thought they were coming in to come in. “It should have been you are not allowed into the game, make sure he is clear that he is not allowed in the game, or clear that he is allowed into the game. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMSomalia backs referee after he is denied entry to USSomali referee Omar Artan has received strong support from his government after he was barred from entering the United States to take part in the World Cup (KENZO TRIBOUILLARD)Somalia on Tuesday defended award-winning referee Omar Artan after he was denied entry to the United States and prevented from becoming the first Somali official to officiate at a World Cup finals.Somalia's Ministry of Sports expressed "deep regret" over Artan's denial of entry, saying that despite diplomatic engagement with US authorities and world football's governing body FIFA, it was "not possible to achieve a positive outcome".Artan, who in 2025 was named men's referee of the year by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), was barred from entering the US on Saturday after arriving at Miami International Airport.FIFA then confirmed that he would no longer be part of the quadrennial football extravaganza set to start on Thursday.Artan's appointment to the 52-strong roster of referees for the finals in Canada, Mexico and the United States had been a huge source of pride for his compatriots.Somalia's president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said in April he was "a symbol of inspiration for the new generation of Somalis". A spokesperson for the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said Artan was denied entry following a routine inspection.Somalia is one of several countries on a travel ban list introduced by President Donald Trump's administration as part of a broader immigration crackdown.A CAF source told AFP the continental body could not intervene in the decision by the US, adding: "We certainly feel sorry for Artan."Somalia reaffirmed "its unwavering support" for the referee, adding it "has full confidence in his integrity, professionalism, and continued contribution to the advancement of football both in Somalia and internationally.""Artan represents the very best of Somali talent," the Ministry of Sports statement said.- Dream crushed -Artan said in an interview with the New York Times that the "biggest dream of my life" had been ripped away."I am very, very disappointed," he said from Istanbul, where he returned after being turned back in Miami."I'm just simply a referee who's trying to live his dream, the biggest dream of my life, to come to the World Cup."Artan said he was subjected to an 11-hour interview with border officials and then taken to a separate holding cell where he was detained for several further hours before being put on a flight back to Turkey."I had the right papers and everything. I had the right visa," he added -- an assertion confirmed to AFP by a Somali government advisor.Artan's rejection has sparked outrage at home.Former Somali Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire said he was "deeply disappointed" and assured Artan that "Africa and the world stand with you.""He represents not only Somalia, but also the aspirations of millions of young Africans who believe excellence should be recognized on the world stage," Khaire wrote on X.Ex-Somali government minister Abdirashid Hashi called on FIFA to stand with Artan, saying, "Football is supposed to unite people, not exclude."He "should be judged by his merit and professionalism -- not by the passport he carries," Hashi added, describing the move as a "political decision" by the United States.Hashi suggested that FIFA could have allowed the referee to take charge of World Cup games in the two other countries hosting games."I hope Canada and Mexico issue visas to Artan. There is no reason a referee denied entry to one host country cannot still contribute to a World Cup being hosted across three countries," he said.str-jf-mnk/pi/gj/mw0 التعليقات 0 المشاركات 35 مشاهدة 0 معاينة

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMColts place former Ravens undrafted defensive back on retired listFormer Ravens undrafted free agent Reuben Lowery's NFL path has taken an unexpected turn. The Indianapolis Colts placed Lowery on the Reserve/Retired list after claiming the versatile defensive back off waivers from Baltimore last season. Lowery, a Powder Springs, Georgia, native, appeared in three games with one start for the Ravens and recorded five tackles after making the initial 53-man roster out of training camp.Lowery was one of Baltimore’s more surprising roster stories last offseason. He signed with the Ravens after going undrafted in 2025 out of Tennessee-Chattanooga, where he built a reputation as a productive, versatile defensive back with ball skills, toughness, and special teams value. He and Keyon Martin entered camp as long shots, but both made the roster because of their ability to handle multiple responsibilities and create splash plays, moves that helped push Beau Brade and Jalyn Armor-Davis off the initial 53-man roster.we have placed S Reuben Lowery III on reserve/retired list. pic.twitter.com/N8R5X3ljva— Indianapolis Colts (@Colts) June 9, 2026Lowery’s stay in Baltimore ended after the Ravens reshaped the back end of the defense. Baltimore waived him after signing C.J. Gardner-Johnson to the practice squad and trading for safety Alohi Gilman, but Lowery was not unemployed long. The AFC South-leading Colts claimed him off waivers, adding a young defensive back with college production and early NFL experience. At Tennessee-Chattanooga, the 5-foot-9, 204-pound Lowery appeared in 46 games with 29 starts from 2020-24. He totaled 166 tackles, including 109 solo stops, 19 tackles for loss, two sacks, 15 passes defensed, three interceptions, two interception returns for touchdowns, two forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery.Lowery also earned four Academic All-SoCon honors from 2021-24. As a senior, he was named first-team All-SoCon after starting 11 games and producing 62 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, six passes defensed, and two interceptions. For Baltimore, Lowery’s brief run remains a reminder of how valuable versatility can be at the bottom of a roster. He made the Ravens as a do-it-all defensive back and even started at safety, but his time with the Colts ended when he was placed on the retired list. This article originally appeared on Ravens Wire: Former Ravens safety Reuben Lowery placed on retired list0 التعليقات 0 المشاركات 35 مشاهدة 0 معاينة

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMBrandon Aiyuk: 49ers are "mad 'cause they stupid"49ers receiver Brandon Aiyuk was back at it on social media on Tuesday, two days after posting a video in which he told his team to "stop running from the belt."In a new Instagram video, Aiyuk said the 49ers are upset because they screwed up by giving him a four-year, $120 million extension in August 2024."And another thing. You wanna know why they really mad, though? They mad ‘cause they stupid. They dumb. They mad that they paid me $50 million in eight months, and they [voided] my guarantees for [2026]. And I'm about to be on a new team in [2026]."They mad at they selves, for real. They just acting like they mad at me but they stupid-ass mad at they selves."Aiyuk continues to be under contract with the 49ers. If he had shown up during the voluntary offseason program and insisted on practicing, they may have cut him. As it stands, he needs to be ready to report for training camp.If/when he does, the 49ers will have to decide whether to trade him, cut him (with a reduced deal), or let him practice — and risk owing him more than $26 million if he suffers a season-ending injury in the building.0 التعليقات 0 المشاركات 35 مشاهدة 0 معاينة

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMNYC Mayor Mamdani announces Knicks Finals Game 4 ticketed watch party outside MSGNEW YORK — Mayor Mamdani announced Tuesday that the city has approved a ticketed watch party for Game 4 of the NBA Finals outside Madison Square Garden.“We’re back outside the Garden,” Mamdani posted on Twitter. “We have approved a ticketed MSG watch party for Game 4. More details soon. As we prepare to watch together, let me be clear: this is a historic, joyful moment for our city. We will not allow it to be disrupted by violence. Be safe, take care, and celebrate responsibly. Knicks in 5.”‘Tickets were not immediately made public, but will be provided by MSG.Only those with tickets will be allowed into the watch party outside MSG through the event’s single access point planned for W. 33rd St. and Sixth Ave. Anyone leaving the event will be denied reentry.Additional watch parties will be hosted at the Wollman Rink in Central Park and Brooklyn Bowl.Similar to its plan for Monday’s Game 3, during which the watch party outside MSG was canceled due to Trump’s attendance, the NYPD will establish a security perimeter around the Garden running from W. 29th to W. 35th Sts., between Sixth and Eighth Aves.Starting at 4 p.m., only those with tickets to the game or a train ticket, or who have credentials, or who live in the area, or who are heading to restaurants or bars in the area will be allowed inside the security perimeter. Those seeking access to Moynihan Train Hall and Penn Station should use entrances located on the west side of Eighth Ave. at W. 31st and W. 33rd Sts.Last month, midway through the Knicks conference semifinals series against the Cavaliers, the NYPD canceled the MSG watch parties, due to what it called “huge, very rough crowds.” But after reconsidering, City Hall and the NYPD decided to allow the Garden watch parties for the Finals. Whether to allow the events has been a game-by-game decision. On Friday, an estimated 7,000 spectators flooded onto W. 33rd St. for the Finals Game 2 watch party outside the Garden. But the event was marred as fans celebrated the home town hoopsters’ squeaker win, when a female cop was punched in the face by a female fan and 26 people were arrested.Although Monday’s Game 3 watch party outside MSG was cancelled due to Trump’s attendance inside The World’s Most Famous Arena, violence at an alternate viewing site at Bryant Park again left doubt as to whether the city would approve a Game 4 watch party at the Garden.Up to five officers were injured late Monday at Bryant Park, some by thrown glass objects, according to the Police Benevolent Association, the NYPD’s largest union. Twenty-one people were taken into custody, including one at the Wollman Rink watch party in Central Park, late Monday. The mayhem came as the Knicks lost Game 3 to the Spurs, leaving the Knicks leading the series 2-1.____0 التعليقات 0 المشاركات 35 مشاهدة 0 معاينة -
SPORTS.YAHOO.COMRonald Acuña Jr. exits game with apparent leg ailmentCINCINNATI, OHIO - MAY 30: Ronald Acuna Jr. #13 of the Atlanta Braves celebrates a hitting a home run in the third inning against the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park on May 30, 2026 in Cincinnati, Ohio. (Photo by Andy Lyons/Getty Images) | Getty Images Ah, jeez. The frustrations continue for Ronald Acuña Jr. and his wheels, as he had to exit Tuesday’s game against the Chicago White Sox with an apparent lower leg injury. With one out in the top of the fourth inning, Acuña hit a ground ball deep to the left side of the infield. Chicago third baseman Miguel Vargas’ throw bounced to first and just barely beat Acuña but that happened after Acuña started to limp once he got close to first base. Acuña appeared visibly frustrated as he was taking off his batting gloves and limped off the field and into the visitors’ clubhouse. Acuña was replaced by Eli White in the outfield. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWhere Anthony Richardson stands in Colts backup QB competition in minicampMinicamp for the Indianapolis Colts is underway, and one position battle taking place is at backup quarterback between Anthony Richardson and Riley Leonard. In these early stages, neither quarterback has separated himself from the other."Not right now," Shane Steichen said when asked if there is any separation. "I mean, both those guys are having a good offseason. They're both doing some really good things, and it's back and forth right now. And so we'll see where that goes."During the first week of OTAs, Steichen said that this competition would last through training camp and the preseason. While Daniel Jones is still competing in just the 7-on-7 periods, Richardson and Leonard will continue to split reps with the ones.Although Richardson's trade request is still on the table, that's not where his attention lies at this time. He's focused on being with the Colts. Two top priorities for Richardson this offseason have been on his footwork and mechanics, both of which can help improve his accuracy.Following Leonard's Week 18 performance against a very good Houston defense last season, along with what the team has seen since drafting him, the Colts remain quite bullish on Leonard's potential. This article originally appeared on Colts Wire: Shane Steichen discusses Colts' backup QB competition in minicamp0 التعليقات 0 المشاركات 35 مشاهدة 0 معاينة

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMDelbarton outlasts Seton Hall Prep to return to pinnacle of lacrosseUNION — Christian Trocyznski had a very simple goal as Delbarton stepped onto the field at Kean University's Alumni Stadium on June 9. He and the rest of the Green Wave seniors were determined not to be the first class in more than 20 years to graduate without a championship ring.Delbarton outlasted archrival Seton Hall Prep, 8-7, in the NJSIAA Non-Public final to get the seniors that celebratory jewelry. It wasn't the epic, three-overtime marathon from 2023 – the Green Wave's last state title. But the Pirates got painfully close as senior Owen Dunleavy tallied twice in the final minute and 15 seconds. But the Delbarton players were only feeling exuberance as they sprinted across the turf toward their fan section. They climbed up toward their classmates, shouting in joy.The sun had set over Alumni Stadium by the time the Green Wave finally packed up all their gear and walked toward the bus together. "We came out here and got it done," said Trocyznski, who is planning to play at Cornell University next year. "The moment was a little bigger than I expected. I love this team. I love Delbarton lacrosse. There's no better way to go out."The Green Wave had lost, 9-7, to Seton Hall Prep in a Fitch-Pitt game on April 18. The Pirates came in as the defending Non-Public champions. But none of that mattered after the opening faceoff. Senior Chase Houser was the only Delbarton player with multiple goals, finishing with two plus an assist. Troczynski, seniors Pierce Bolger, Gus Cummings and Jack Sheridan and juniors Jesse DeNegri and Brody Cozic each scored for the Green Wave. Jack Merklinger, a junior from Mendham, led Seton Hall Prep with a goal and two assists – one to his younger brother Drew."It's an unreal feeling. I prayed for games like this," Houser said. "(The early loss) definitely benefited us. It put a little chip on our shoulders. It's one thing when you know you're the better team. But you have to prove it on the field." SPORTS.YAHOO.COMCharlie Baker reveals ‘key areas’ for amendments to Protect College Sports Act, next stepsIn a letter to NCAA schools Tuesday, president Charlie Baker detailed “key areas” for amendments to the Protect College Sports Act, according to Yahoo! Sports’ Ross Dellenger. He also said he expects a markup in the Senate in the “coming weeks” as part of the process.Baker stressed the need to expand the scope of the provision about preempting state laws that prohibit enforcement and to further clarify that rev-share does not require approval by the College Sports Commission. He also suggested amending the uniform five-week transfer window and, instead, letting the NCAA make those periods sport-specific.[ $19.99 gets you a FULL year of On3 | Rivals national coverage ]Other areas Baker addressed include making any eligibility or transfer suit exclusive to federal courts, rather than letting state courts make rulings. He also suggested an adjustment to protections for women’s and Olympic sports to maintaining the number of sponsored sports teams, rather than maintaining scholarship spots. In a letter to schools, NCAA president Charlie Baker says he’s expecting the Senate to hold a “markup” of the Protect College Sports Act in the “coming weeks,” which is the next step in the legislative process. He also outlined “key areas” for bill amendments, including…— Ross Dellenger (@RossDellenger) June 10, 2026Baker also called the bipartisan legislation, filed by Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), the best opportunity for a bill on college sports. But he said time is of the essence.“We are running out of time, and this bipartisan bill is the best chance to ensure college sports will continue to thrive for all 550,000 current college athletes and for years to come,” Baker wrote in the letter, via Yahoo! Sports.Baker previously did not voice support for the Protect College Sports Act after its initial filing, but said Monday the bill is necessary in the current landscape. Those comments came after a judge granted Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby an injunction that would allow him to play in 2026 after he admitted to gambling on Indiana football games while on the Hoosiers’ roster.SUBSCRIBE to the On3 NIL and Sports Business NewsletterThe Protect College Sports Act has been a major discussion point around college athletics and takes aim at issues such as the transfer portal, coach movement and media rights. The latter point would give schools the option to pool their rights after reaching a 75% threshold. While the Big 12 and ACC shared their support for the bill, the Big Ten and SEC said they do not support the legislation in its current form. The two conferences held virtual meetings with Cruz and Cantwell on Tuesday as discussions continue about what could lie ahead.Additionally, another hearing is taking place on Capitol Hill about the bill. The first one occurred last week and saw testimony from witnesses such as former Alabama coach Nick Saban and Notre Dame athletics director Pete Bevacqua. Current head football coaches such as Memphis’Charles Huff and Middle Tennessee State’sDerek Mason are on the invitation list for this week’s hearing.0 التعليقات 0 المشاركات 34 مشاهدة 0 معاينة

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMFreddie Freeman Reaches Impressive Career MilestoneLos Angeles Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman recorded the 2,500th hit of his MLB career against the Pittsburgh Pirates Tuesday.Freeman entered the series two hits short of 2,500, and took one step closer to the milestone in the top of the sixth inning—hitting a double into right-center field. The milestone knock came one inning later, when the Dodgers batted around. He singled on a line drive to center, scoring LA’s 12th run of the game.Freeman, since joining the Dodgers ahead of the 2022 season, has recorded 796 hits, which ranks second in MLB during that span behind Luis Arraez. Bobby Witt Jr. is the next closest player to him, tallying 795.His 2,500 career hits lead all current MLB players, as do his 1,412 runs scored, 562 doubles and 1,357 RBIs. Freeman led MLB in hits in 2022 with 199, and led the National League in hits in 2018 with 191. His best season in terms of hits came in 2023 with the Dodgers, when he had 211.Freeman was bound to reach the milestone at some point this season, especially with how he’s swung that bat so far. Entering Monday’s game, Freeman had a .280 batting average with a .838 OPS. He has 10 homers, marking the 16th consecutive season in which he has reached double digits, as well as 35 RBIs.Jun 5, 2026; Los Angeles, California, USA; Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman (5) is congratulated by second baseman Enrique Hernandez (8) and shortstop Mookie Betts (50) after hitting a walk-off home run in the ninth inning against the Los Angeles Angels at Dodger Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Jayne Kamin-Oncea-Imagn ImagesHow Did Freddie Freeman Reach 2,500 Hits?Since the beginning of his career in 2010, Freeman has barely missed a game in MLB. He has played 100 or more games in every season since 2011, with the only exception being the shortened 2020 season and the 2026, which is still well short of 100 games old. He has also reached 100 hits in each of those seasons.Through his 12 seasons with the Braves, Freeman had 1,704 hits, and a .295 batting average. The next hits milestone Freeman could reach is 3,000, but that isn’t a given. He would need several more seasons to reach that mark if he continues averaging 180 hits per 162 games, and he recent spoke about potentially retiring before the four-year timeline he provided before the season.“I’ve always thought Father Time takes you down,” Freeman said. “But I don’t know if it’s Father Time. I think it’s because you miss things with your family and your kids. Maybe that’s the contributing factor to older guys not playing as good.”Can Freddie Freeman reach 3,000 hits?0 التعليقات 0 المشاركات 34 مشاهدة 0 معاينة

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMTexas Tech, Brandon Sorsby, and the NCAA: Is CFB punishing a sick man or protecting its soul?Texas Tech, Brandon Sorsby, and the NCAA: Is CFB punishing a sick man or protecting its soul? originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.On the NCAA and its relationship on gambling in the wake of Monday's bombshell eligibility news, Tim Cowlishaw said what a lot of people were thinking, but nobody wanted to say out loud. The Dallas Morning News columnist published a piece titled, "Texas Tech QB Brandon Sorsby's return to football is hardly the death of college sports." While the sports world was busy comparing Sorsby to Pete Rose and the 1919 Black Sox, Cowlishaw pumped the brakes on the outrage machine and asked a question: is this actually as bad as everyone is making it sound? It is a fair question. And the honest answer is more complicated than the NCAA's statement let on.What Tim Cowlishaw actually said on Brendan SorsbyCowlishaw's core argument is grounded in context. Yes, Sorsby wagered approximately $90,000 on professional and college sports over four years. But as Cowlishaw pointed out, that breaks down to roughly $2,000 a month over that span, and betting is legal in both Indiana and Ohio, the states where Sorsby played before arriving in Lubbock. The most damning detail in the NCAA's case is that Sorsby placed bets on Indiana games or player props while he was a freshman with the Hoosiers in 2022. But even that carries an asterisk. As Cowlishaw noted,"...he bet a total of $850 on the Hoosiers or on props while he was the scout team quarterback. Once he started playing, Sorsby is not accused of having bet on Indiana games or college football at all."That is a significant distinction that has gotten buried under the avalanche of hot takes.Cowlishaw also directly challenged the insider trading comparison that some analysts floated."Do you think a Cowboys practice squad player goes into a game knowing whether the Cowboys are going to win or lose, based on how he saw them practice?" he wrote. "You haven't spent much time around athletes. They have no more insider knowledge than I do after a good practice on the driving range, thinking I might shoot 78 and carding a 92."He is not wrong about that either. The witch-hunt nobody wants to nameHere is where I have to be honest about something that has not gotten nearly enough attention in this conversation: the timing and circumstances of Sorsby's mental health diagnosis.Sorsby reportedly sought gambling rehabilitation treatment, which his legal team has leaned on heavily as part of his case. But there is a question that nobody in the national media has pressed hard enough. Was Sorsby diagnosed with a gambling disorder or related mental health condition before the betting occurred, during it, or only after he was caught? That matters enormously. If Sorsby was a diagnosed gambling addict who was actively spiraling during his time at Indiana and nobody in the program, the conference or the NCAA caught it or offered meaningful intervention, then the organization now seeking to ban him for life has some explaining to do about its own duty of care to student-athletes.If the diagnosis came after he was caught, as a legal strategy, that is a different conversation entirely and one that could turn the public sympathy narrative against him quickly.Neither scenario has been fully reported. And the fact that it has not been pressed suggests that the media covering this story has been more interested in the institutional drama than in the human being at the center of it.Cowlishaw touched on this when he wrote: "How many commissioners have even looked into studies that show a gambling addiction can be harder to break than smoking or drinking? Yes, they run a little disclaimer at the bottom of the ads for legal reasons, but that's the end of anyone's real concerns."That is the paragraph that should be hanging on the wall of every conference office in America. The NCAA cannot have it both waysThis is the part of Cowlishaw's column that lands the hardest with me and deserves to be quoted at length."You can't turn on a sporting event without being told who Charles Barkley likes tonight or which golfers' odds have zoomed to the top of the DraftKings and FanDuel charts," Cowlishaw wrote. "Those who promote and profit from gambling can't pretend that the same draconian punishments for placing bets - not talking about bets against one's team, of course - can remain in place. You give college players $2 million to $3 million a year to play football or basketball, some of them may just develop a gambling habit. Who is surprised at that?"This is the contradiction at the heart of the Sorsby case that the NCAA does not want to answer. The same organization that is "deeply concerned" about the "damaging, far-reaching and broadly destabilizing ramifications" of the court ruling has spent years cashing media rights checks from networks that run DraftKings and FanDuel commercials on a loop during every broadcast. The NCAA did not build a firewall between college sports and the gambling industry. It built a partnership and called it someone else's problem.Cowlishaw also provided the broader context that the doomsday crowd conveniently left out. "We have seen the death of century-old rivalries, the death of the Pac-12, the endless raiding of mid-major schools of any available talent by the Power Four conferences, coaches having to guard against players being poached during the season, players transferring on a yearly basis with no end in sight." He added that in basketball, "we have seen players already drafted by the NBA return to college, multiple players who played pro in Europe return to college, multiple players who played in the NBA's developmental league return to college."His closing line should punch readers in the gut, saying: "But a player who never bet on any games in which he had any involvement is the death of college sports? Got it."Where the line actually isNone of this means Sorsby gets a free pass. The two-game suspension his legal team proposed as a compromise was reasonable given the facts of the case, and the player prop bets are a legitimate issue that deserved real discipline. As Cowlishaw noted, Sorsby is "a long, long way from the Hysier Millers and others in recent years who have been found to place bets against their team in college basketball."Throwing a game is an unforgivable offense in sports; it always has been. The 1919 Black Sox, the City College of New York basketball scandals of the 1950s, those are the cases that prompted lifetime bans because the integrity of the contest was directly compromised. A scout team quarterback betting $850 on his own school to win is not Shoeless Joe Jackson. Treating it the same way is intellectually dishonest. The real problem here is not Brandon Sorsby. The real problem is that college athletics has spent years building a system with no consistent standard for anything, whether it be eligibility, NIL, transfer rules, gambling enforcement, and is now shocked that the courts are filling the void the NCAA left wide open.Cowlishaw is right that the athletic directors threatening not to play Texas Tech will ultimately look at their TV contracts and find their way to Lubbock. He is right that the moralizing does not survive contact with the reality of what college sports has already become. But the question of when Sorsby was diagnosed, and what was known and when, is the thread that nobody has pulled yet. If it unravels the way it could, the witch-hunt narrative stops being a hot take and starts being the actual story. That trial is set for February 8th, 2027. Two weeks after the championship is played. There will be plenty of time to find out.0 التعليقات 0 المشاركات 34 مشاهدة 0 معاينة

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMCalais Campbell still loves football at 39, expects 19th NFL season with Ravens to be his lastCalais Campbell rejoined the Baltimore Ravens this offseason for his 19th NFL season. The six-time Pro Bowler and three-time All-Pro expects it to be his last. But he’s not certain.“This year, I feel as strongly as ever that this is probably going to be my last year,” Campbell told reporters Tuesday, per The Athletic. “I know I said that last year and the year before. I genuinely mean it at the time, but I always tell myself to play well enough to be able to get a job again if I want to. “If I go out there and perform to the level I want to play, I’m probably going to have to turn somebody down next year. That’s the ideal scenario. At that time, I’ll decide if I want to play again or not.”Campbell’s produced an accomplished career that includes six Pro Bowl and three All-Pro selections and he has more than $150 million in career earnings. He returned last season to the Arizona Cardinals team that drafted him and with whom he played in a Super Bowl with as a rookie after the 2008 season. So why does he want to return this season at 39 years old after what could have been a career bookend season in in Arizona? It’s a question he says he hears from players, coaches, fans and his family. His answer is simple. He still loves the game. And teams keep signing him.“Everybody’s just like, why you keep doing this?” Campbell said. “I think the only answer I can really say is I love the game. I love it. I’m still fairly good at it. And they still want me to play. So why not?”Campbell, indeed, remains a difference maker who’s started all but one of the games he’s played in since his rookie season. He’s recorded five-plus sacks in each of his last four seasons. He’s hoping to remain a force for a Ravens team he previously played with form 2020-22. And he has one significant hole to fill on his résumé. He played in a Super Bowl as a rookie, but he doesn’t have a Super Bowl ring. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMAngel Reese stacks 17 points, 17 rebounds in first regular-season game back in Chicago, helping Dream past SkyAngel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso made up a formidable Chicago Sky frontcourt duo the past two seasons. Cardoso was the third selection in the 2024 WNBA Draft. Reese heard her name called four picks later. They were a tandem until the Sky dealt Reese to the Atlanta Dream in the offseason, a seismic trade that yielded Chicago 2027 and 2028 first-round picks. On Tuesday, instead of sharing the floor as teammates, Reese and Cardoso went toe-to-toe against each other as opponents, both starring in the first half with 11 points apiece. In the third quarter, Reese secured her eighth double-double of the season. The two-time All-Star finished with 17 points and 17 rebounds on 5-of-12 shooting in her first regular-season game back in Chicago. Cardoso, meanwhile, wound up with 13 points, 5 assists, 4 blocks and 2 rebounds. Reese’s Dream came out on top with an 82-75 victory.Atlanta (8-3) bumped its record to 3-1 in the WNBA Commissioner’s Cup standings. Chicago (4-8), on the other hand, slid to 1-3 in the early-season competition.Reese received a warm welcome from Sky fans on Tuesday. It wasn’t her first return to Wintrust Arena since the trade, though. She was also there in April for a preseason game, in which she was welcomed with a tribute video. That night, however, the former LSU standout played only the first half, like the rest of the Dream’s starters. As expected, she was on the court much longer this time around.Play 2026 Soccer Pick 'Em with FOX One and make your picks for the world's biggest soccer tournamentDespite the work Reese put in this offseason to further improve her outside shot, she came into the midweek clash with only one 3-pointer this season. She doubled her long-range output with a second-quarter stroke from downtown that beat the shot clock. The lead changed hands throughout the night, as the Sky hardly looked like a team that had dropped six of their last seven games. Chicago was powered by Cardoso and veteran guard Skylar Diggins in the opening half, which they ended with a 42-39 advantage.Diggins hit a trio of 3s over the first two quarters of play, and the Sky as a group was 5 of 8 from deep in that span. This story is being updated.0 التعليقات 0 المشاركات 34 مشاهدة 0 معاينة

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMJacoby Brissett, Josh Sweat return as Cardinals begin minicampEvery member of the Arizona Cardinals was present and accounted for as mandatory minicamp began — but the drama hasn't ended.Quarterback Jacoby Brissett went through warmups in running shoes, rather than cleats, and did not participate in any drills with his teammates. Edge rusher Josh Sweat did even less than that, standing to the side and chatting with an assistant coach as the Cardinals began practice. Both players were absent during voluntary organized team activities last month, putting the spotlight squarely on themselves during this week’s three-day minicamp. Unlike OTAs, attendance at minicamp is mandated by the NFL. If players miss all three sessions, their total fines climb over $100,000.But even with those deterrents, Brissett and Sweat’s participation was not a certainty when the week began. Brissett is seeking a pay raise that would pay him as a starting quarterback, while Sweat reportedly has concerns about the direction of the Cardinals’ organization after they fired Jonathan Gannon, with whom he had a close relationship. On Tuesday, June 9, though, Cardinals head coach Mike LaFleur said, “If Josh could (practice), he would right now.” Later, he expanded on that.“It's not injury related,” LaFleur said. “He hasn't been here.”Sweat’s absence at OTAs, it should be noted, was not new. He also skipped OTAs last year under Gannon, instead choosing to spend his offseason working with a personal trainer. And LaFleur did not seem concerned that his absence last month constituted a larger problem. With Brissett, the situation remains murkier. When asked whether Brissett would also be practicing if he could, LaFleur declined to provide a straightforward answer.“I'll keep that with us,” LaFleur said. “Like I just said, Phase 1, Phase 2, there's a lot of lead-up time to get out there and practice. I don't care if you're a punter or a water boy or whatnot. If you haven't been playing football, you want to make sure you're doing the right part by those guys.”Throughout the Cardinals’ spring practices, LaFleur has struck a diplomatic tone when discussing Brissett. He had repeatedly pointed to Brissett’s wealth of NFL experience, stating that the quarterback has played in similar systems. But at other points, LaFleur has harped on the importance of offseason reps to build familiarity in a new offense. And last week, receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. said that he has not been able to build his rapport with Brissett this spring, as a result of his absence. In that sense, it was a boon to at least have Brissett back in the building at minicamp, even if his participation remained limited. According to LaFleur, Brissett has been involved in meetings this week, getting his first exposure to the Cardinals’ new offensive system.“Guys are excited that he was here,” tight end Trey McBride said. “Guys want him to be here. Obviously would love to have him in the building (during OTAs), but he's working through some things on his own. So we totally understand that. But you could just tell the presence that he brought today, being in the building was awesome.”Cardinals nearing full healthThe Cardinals’ injury report continues to shrink as the end of spring practices looms. On Tuesday, only two players were absent entirely: running back James Conner and rookie defensive tackle Kaleb Proctor.Conner is working back from a season-ending foot injury suffered last September and was present at points during OTAs, doing light work with the rest of the Cardinals. Proctor has now been absent for the past three weeks, although LaFleur has not addressed his status.Four other players were present but only in street clothes: cornerback Garrett Williams, defensive tackle Walter Nolen, tight end Tip Reiman and safety Kitan Crawford.Of that group, only Williams is likely to miss the start of the season as he recovers from a torn Achilles suffered last December. Nolen said that he expects to return for the start of training camp, while LaFleur said the same timeline goes for Reiman. Two other players, meanwhile, worked on the side with trainers, indicating they are nearing a full return: running back Trey Benson and Karson Sharar.Mack Wilson offers bold reaction to Garrett tradeWhen Myles Garrett was traded to the Los Angeles Rams last week, it made the NFC West even more challenging for the Cardinals, who are viewed by oddsmakers as the worst team in the NFL this season. But when asked for his reaction to the trade, linebacker Mack Wilson Sr. opted for confidence.“They gotta deal with us,” Wilson said. “At the end of the day, they gotta deal with us.”Left tackle Paris Johnson Jr. — who will often be tasked with blocking Garrett — offered a more diplomatic tone.“I think it's awesome that we get to bring that great talent to the division,” Johnson said. “It just makes these games even more exciting and the games are even more important up front.”This article originally appeared on Arizona Republic: Jacoby Brissett, Josh Sweat return as Arizona Cardinals begin minicamp0 التعليقات 0 المشاركات 34 مشاهدة 0 معاينة

APNEWS.COMDemocrat Xavier Becerra and Republican Steve Hilton will face off in California governor’s raceCalifornia gubernatorial candidate Steve Hilton speaks during a campaign event on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, in Norwalk, Calif. (AP Photo/Benjamin Hanson)2026-06-09T23:47:35Z SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — The race for California governor this fall will be a battle between a Democrat promising to cement the state’s status as a stronghold of liberal policies and a Republican pledging to dramatically reverse course in the nation’s most populous state.Republican Steve Hilton, a former Fox News commentator backed by President Donald Trump, has won enough votes to advance to the general election, The Associated Press determined Tuesday. He’ll face Democrat Xavier Becerra, a former state attorney general and health secretary under President Joe Biden. The winner will succeed Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom to lead the state that is home to roughly 39 million people, Hollywood, a booming tech industry and a vast farming region that helps feed the nation. By itself California represents one of the largest economies in the world. The next governor will have to take on stubborn issues including a high cost of living, housing shortages and homelessness. Democrats outnumber Republicans in CaliforniaHilton is banking his campaign on voters being frustrated enough to do something they have not done in two decades: elect a Republican to statewide office. The last time that happened was when Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger won a second term in 2006. Hilton has campaigned as an outsider who would bring change after more than 15 years of one-party rule.“If you’re happy with the way that California is being run, Xavier Becerra is your guy,” Hilton said in a recent interview. “If you want change, vote for me.”But simply having an ‘R’ next to his name stacks the odds against Hilton, since Republicans make up just about 25% of registered voters compared with Democrats’ 45%. Trump’s endorsement likely boosted Hilton with GOP voters during the primary but could be a major liability in the general election. Becerra was a chief architect of the state’s so-called resistance to Trump during the first years of his presidency after then-Gov. Jerry Brown, a Democrat, appointed him attorney general in 2017. In that role Becerra filed at least 120 legal actions against the federal government. Read More Becerra has made pushing back against Trump’s incursions a central piece of this campaign, as the president has repeatedly gone after the state during his second term including by curbing a signature plan to reduce planet-warning emissions from cars, withholding aid for wildfire recovery and suing over state policies supporting transgender student-athletes.“Donald Trump is doubling down on decline and counting on people being too fearful, distracted or gullible to fight back,” Becerra told a crowd on primary night. “As governor I will never back down from the threats of small cowards in big offices.” Results conclude a chaotic primaryIt took nearly a week to determine the general election matchup for governor due to California’s notoriously slow vote-counting process. Ballots are mailed to every eligible voter and they are counted if they are postmarked by Election Day and arrive at an election office within seven days. Counties process and count mail ballots in roughly the order they are received, so the last ones returned are the last ones counted. The Associated Press determined Friday that Becerra had won enough votes to advance to November. Hilton had been vying for a second spot against Democrat Tom Steyer, a billionaire hedge fund manager turned climate activist who poured $215 million of his personal fortune into the campaign and blasted Californians’ screens with ads. Steyer steadily narrowed Hilton’s lead for second place every day since Election Day. But he was never on track to fully close the gap. AP advanced Hilton to the general election on Tuesday after determining there weren’t enough outstanding votes for Steyer to catch Hilton.Election data shows that large numbers of Democratic voters held onto their ballots until the final days of the election. That helped explain why Steyer did better than Hilton in the votes counted after June 2, Election Day. Steyer is splitting Democratic votes with Becerra, whose lead over Hilton and Steyer continues to grow. Steyer conceded Tuesday and urged his supporters to back Becerra.“It would be a travesty for Steve Hilton to win the governorship, and Californians must unite behind Xavier Becerra to ensure he does not,” he said in a statement. Affordability is a central issue How to make the state more affordable was a major theme throughout the primary. Hilton promised to make Californians’ first $100,000 free of income tax, create a loan program for first-time homebuyers and freeze in-state tuition at public colleges. Becerra, meanwhile, said he would declare states of emergency to address high energy costs and housing shortages and to freeze home insurance rates. The two have one thing in common: They both come from immigrant backgrounds.Hilton moved to California from the United Kingdom in 2012 and became a citizen in 2021. Back in the U.K., he was an adviser to Conservative Party officials including former Prime Minister David Cameron.Hilton has poked fun at his British accent by comparing himself to the Austria-born Schwarzenegger.“I know that some of you may be watching and saying, ‘Who is this guy with a funny accent?’” he said on election night. “Well you know there was actually an immigrant who was governor of California not that long ago.” Becerra was born to Mexican immigrant parents in Sacramento and also raised there. He said his family’s story mirrored his “underdog” campaign for governor.“Like my parents, I never gave up,” he told supporters on election night. “I never stopped believing in the beaconlike goodness of California. And thankfully, neither did you.”Becerra would be the state’s first Latino governor since the late 1800s.__Associated Press journalists Nicholas Riccardi in Denver and Stephen Ohlemacher in Washington contributed.
