APNEWS.COMPope honors Barcelona’s sacred monuments on death centenary of Sagrada Familia designer GaudíPope Leo XIV blesses a child before a prayer vigil at Lluis Companys Olympic Stadium in Barcelona, Spain, Tuesday, June 9, 2026. (AP Photo/Emilio Morenatti)2026-06-10T08:28:19Z BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Pope Leo XIV is honoring two of Barcelona’s most sacred and beautiful monuments Wednesday with a noontime prayer at a mountain-top abbey and an evening Mass at the famed Sagrada Familia Basilica on the centenary of the death of its architect, Antoni Gaudí.Leo opened his day by visiting inmates at a Barcelona prison, keeping up a tradition of Pope Francis, who used his foreign trips to minister to those who can’t join in the public celebrations when a pope comes to town. He told the inmates that their mistakes don’t define them and that “the past does not condemn the future, but rather offers us the possibility of changing our decisions and choices.” Leo is in Spain on a weeklong visit that has highlighted how the country of 50 million, which experienced a religious crisis after its 20th-century dictatorship ended, still has plenty of faithful Catholics who have t urned out in droves to welcome the American pope. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMGloucester full of leaders, says stand-in captain BeckettSarah Beckett is seeking her fifth PWR title this season [Getty Images]Sarah Beckett may be the one with the captain's armband on when Gloucester-Hartpury walk out for their Premiership Women's Rugby (PWR) semi-final against Trailfinders on Sunday, but the forward says her team is full of leaders. The 27-year-old is looking to help The Circus secure a fourth-straight PWR title - a fifth overall for Beckett - before she joins Sale for the start of 2026-27.And, despite not having the on-field support of the likes of team-mates Natasha Hunt, Alex Matthews and Zoe Stratford, Beckett says the advice is never far away."I am getting a lot of support, I am captain on the pitch but there are a whole group of leaders behind me, and a lot of leaders off it too," Beckett told BBC Radio Gloucestershire."I have had messages from Al (Matthews), Mo (Natasha Hunt) and Zo (Stratford), so I don't feel alone in what I am doing."It's difficult to not have them, but they are working really hard with us behind the scenes, working hard on the training pitch coaching, and they are trying to have an influence from off the pitch. "I am very honoured and proud to captain the club and hopefully I can captain us to a final."Beckett did also acknowledge that the absences within the squad had allowed chances for others, including herself, to develop."We lost Mo (Hunt) and Al during the Six Nations, and Zoe is pregnant, so it is tough for us who are out there, and we are devastated for the girls who are injured," she said."But it gives more fuel to the group to do it for them, and a challenge to the group for other leaders to step up."I am keeping the captaincy, but it has been a whole new skillset for me to learn, interacting with the referees on the pitch." Murphy hoping to count on experience in play-offsGloucester-Hartpury trio confirm retirementTrailfinders in play-offs by ending Gloucester's unbeaten runAiming for a successful Queensholm send-offFor some in the Gloucester squad, Beckett included, Sunday will be the final time they run out at Kingsholm - re-badged as Queensholm for the PWR play-offs - in Cherry and White. Ireland international Sam Monaghan, who has extended her stay at the club into next season, believes providing a fitting send-off for those departing can provide extra motivation."The likes of Rachel Lund, who has played for his club for nine years, and Bianca (Blackburn) and El Perry as well have been amazing, and we just want to give these girls the best send-off we can," said Monaghan."This group has been through so much, and you have always looked at Gloucester and how tight of a group they are, how hard they work for each other and how connected they are."Those players deserve an amazing send-off and that's definitely a key motivator for us."The mentality of this group for me stands out, you never know what is around the corner so you just want to give everything into every game. It's never about the 23 who take to the pitch, it's about the whole group."0 Kommentare 0 Geteilt 33 Ansichten 0 Bewertungen

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMASK IRA: Does Heat overhaul have to begin with A for athleticism?Q: Watching these playoffs has made me realize how far back the Heat have fallen in terms of sheer athletic competition. And it’s not just the Heat. The teams loaded with 6-5 to 7-0 athleticism run the NBA now. If the mindset is not getting to that, then you’re just in the way. – Douglas.A: Actually, the only rotation players on the Heat season-ending roster listed shorter than 6-5 were Norman Powell (6-4), Dru Smith (6-2) and Davion Mitchell (6-0). The problem is that in a league where size tends to get exaggerated, the Heat also list at 6-5 Tyler Herro, Pelle Larsson and Kasparas Jakucionis, with Jaime Jaquez Jr. listed at 6-6. So that’s a lot of smaller wings in a league where bigger wings play to an advantage. Plus there is the question of the athleticism of that group. Pat Riley said it after the season, that the Heat need to get bigger and more athletic. He even mentioned how Davion Mitchell would be special if bigger. But he’s not. And the Heat are not.Related Articles Submit your “Ask Ira” question here! Q: During this historic playoff run, the New York Knicks are winning games because of terrific team defense. Jalen Brunson hits clutch baskets, but the Knicks are there at the end or winning by a decent amount because of defense. With all the talk of Giannis Antetokounmpo coming to the Miami Heat, Heat management has to be focused on making the Miami Heat an elite defensive team next year. The Heat were good/average last year, but not great. The intensity wasn’t there last season. We saw many times in close games, the Heat couldn’t get stops. Also, stops on defense lead to easier baskets. So curious, any thoughts on what the Heat will do with player acquisitions and overall approach to improve team defense? The Knicks are taking a page from Pat Riley’s playbook. – Stuart, Miami.A: It is possible, with a Gianni Antetokounmpo addition, the Heat return with a lineup with four plus-defenders, when counting Giannis, Bam Adebayo, Andrew Wiggins and Davion Mitchell. And while you still might have to compensate for Norman Powell, there also could be a move in free agency for a 3-and-D wing. With Giannis, the Heat’s defense will be back to something closer to the Alonzo Mourning era and other Heat defense-driven success stories.Q: When will the Giannis Antetokounmpo questions stop? – Ed.A: When the Bucks make their decision. They, not the Heat, not Giannis Antetokounmpo remain the ones who hold the cards.0 Kommentare 0 Geteilt 33 Ansichten 0 Bewertungen -
SPORTS.YAHOO.COMHow SEC baseball got record five teams in 2026 College World SeriesThe SEC set another record by getting five teams into the 2026 College World Series, breaking the previous record of four teams from the same conference. With one bracket consisting of all SEC teams, it is guaranteed that one team from the conference will play in the title series for the ninth consecutive season in Omaha, Nebraska. The five teams weren't necessarily tabbed to be the main contributors. Neither Ole Miss nor Oklahoma hosted a regional. The preseason projections were even worse. In the preseason SEC coaches poll, only Texas was considered a CWS-caliber team. The Longhorns were picked to finish second in the league. The other four teams in the CWS were picked in the bottom half of the league − Georgia at ninth, Ole Miss at 10th, Alabama at 12th and Oklahoma at 14th.The College World Series begins June 12 at Charles Schwab Field when Ole Miss will open up against No. 5 North Carolina (6 p.m. CT, ESPN). On June 13, Oklahoma will face No. 7 Alabama (2 p.m. CT, ESPN) and No. 3 Georgia will face No. 6 Texas (7 p.m. CT, ESPN).Here's how every team got here:Texas and Georgia have contended all yearTexas and Georgia, who finished first and second in the SEC, have been at the top all season, but they did not face each other in the regular season. Now, they will face off in their opening game of the College World Series in a game that could determine who plays for the national title. The two teams go about things differently. The Bulldogs built the majority of their roster through the transfer portal, and they targeted hitters who can mash. Their 174 home runs are 24 more than any other team in the country, but with a very vanilla pitching staff, they've had to outslug other teams. It's long been a common belief that Georgia's type of approach doesn't work in Charles Schwab Field, but in recent years, a team with a profile this extreme hasn't tried it out.Texas is built on pitching at its core; its strikeout-to-walk ratio is tops among teams still remaining. What's helped the Longhorns in the postseason has been having the first team All-SEC duo of starter Dylan Volantis and closer Sam Cozart in a very heavily homegrown pitching staff. Transfers Aiden Robbins and Carson Tinney lead the way in a lineup that isn't as deep as Georgia's but can still put up runs.Ole Miss is built for the postseasonOle Miss played one of the most difficult SEC schedules − just two of the bottom six teams in the conference were on its slate. But the Rebels' roster construction was built to excel in the postseason. Hunter Elliott, the 2022 College World Series champion, fronts a very heavily homegrown pitching staff, but he hasn't even been the best arm on the staff. Cade Townsend is a first-round prospect for the MLB draft, while Taylor Rabe has 98 strikeouts and 11 walks on the season. The relief duo of Walker Hooks and Hudson Calhoun can lock things down on the back end.Tristan Bissetta and Judd Utermark have led the way in the offense, both blasting over 20 home runs. But the Rebels' offense has similar concerns to Georgia's, without the same level of batting average.Alabama has been the SEC's biggest surpriseMost people wrote off Alabama before the season started, but the Crimson Tide have been one of the most steady, consistent teams throughout the season. The only team in the country to use the same three weekend starters for all 14 weeks of the regular season, Alabama has heavily ridden Tyler Fay, Zane Adams and Myles Upchurch. Brady Neal, Justin Lebron and Bryce Fowler lead a well-rounded lineup. The Crimson Tide don't stand out in any one area statistically, but they can win games in multiple ways, which could help them in Omaha.Oklahoma got hot at the right timeEvery year there's a team in Omaha whose success is inexplicable other than simply "they got hot at the right time." This year, that's Oklahoma. The Sooners took down Georgia Tech and Kansas to advance. In the regular season and SEC Tournament, Oklahoma had just 65 home runs. In the NCAA Tournament, the Sooners have 18 home runs. Deiten LaChance and Brendan Brock have been the season-long power threats, but Dayton Tockey has five home runs since the regular season ended. The rotation, meanwhile, has improved since moving freshmen Xander Mercurius and Cord Rager to the front of the rotation.Aria Gerson covers Vanderbilt athletics for The Tennessean. SPORTS.YAHOO.COM'Playing such a shot is mind-boggling': Ashwin tears into Rishabh Pant after another missed centuryRishabh Pant's impact on Indian Test cricket is beyond dispute. Over the years, the wicketkeeper-batter has built a reputation as one of India's premier match-winners, producing game-changing knocks in challenging circumstances and often shifting momentum through his attacking style. With eight Test centuries from 50 appearances, Pant has become one of the defining players of his generation in the longest format. His fearless batting philosophy, however, has remained a topic of debate. While that aggressive approach has helped him produce some of the most memorable innings by an Indian batter overseas and at home, it has also led to frustrating dismissals at crucial moments. Pant has frequently thrown away opportunities to convert promising scores into hundreds, particularly after reaching the 80s and 90s, choosing to continue playing high-risk shots rather than adjusting his approach.Although that method has generally worked in his favour, there have been occasions when it has drawn criticism, especially when his wicket has come at a key stage of an innings.A recent example arrived during India's one-off Test against Afghanistan. Pant looked set for another significant score before being dismissed for 81. While India were firmly in control of the contest and the dismissal had little bearing on the eventual result, former teammate Ravichandran Ashwin later highlighted the innings as another case of the wicketkeeper-batter failing to learn from past mistakes.Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin praised Pant's immense ability but questioned his tendency to lose focus after getting himself into strong positions. The former India spinner suggested that Pant's repeated dismissals in the 80s and 90s have denied both the player and the team even greater rewards.“You've got out so many times in the 80s and 90s. It's impossible to discover such a great Test batter. But playing such a shot on 80 is mind-boggling. Having come to 80, can't you play for another 20 runs? He has cost India a few times through baffling shots at the wrong time. As a batter, he has to take that extra responsibility. If he had converted his multiple 80s to 100s, his stats would look unbelievable,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.Ashwin went on to argue that Pant is now experienced enough to place greater emphasis on game awareness and match situations. Having crossed the milestone of 50 Test matches, the former spinner believes Pant must balance his natural attacking instincts with the demands of the situation more consistently."All batters make mistakes, but the amount of time he does it is disappointing. Especially when so many have told you that it's a mistake and to still keep doing it, I am not okay with that. He has played more than 50 Tests now. So he needs to start playing the situation for the team on many occasions," he added.0 Kommentare 0 Geteilt 33 Ansichten 0 Bewertungen

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMUFC goes from 'human cockfighting' to the White House in 30 yearsHuman cockfighting. In 1996, John McCain used those words to assail mixed martial arts after he watched videotape of early UFC fightsSaid Art Davie, co-founder of the UFC, “He wasn’t the first one. Early on we were persona non-grata.’’But those were more than words from McCain, the late senator from Arizona who also called MMA "barbaric.’’ He set out to ban the UFC and, in letters sent to the governors of all 50 states, urged them to act.Three decades later, the UFC is scheduled to hold an event at the White House Sunday, June 14.During an interview with USA TODAY Sports, Davie reflected on how the UFC became the leading promoter of MMA and went from sitting in the crosshairs of McCain to the official residence of the U.S. President. Documented history also offered insight.Dana White, the Fertitta brothers and rule changesNot only after McCain’s remarks, Davie said, but he and another key investor also lost confidence in the UFC’s ability to withstand political opposition. It led to the company’s sale in 2000 to the Fertitta brothers, Frank III and Lorenzo, for $2 million. The young man who pushed the Fertittas to buy the company was Dana White, who soon became president of the UFC’s parent company and later became the face of the UFC.The new owners eliminated the open-ended fights and introduced five-minute rounds.Rather than fighting regulation, the UFC embraced it. The company adopted the Unified Rules of MMA.In 2007, McCain had more to say about the UFC: “They have cleaned up the sport to the point, at least in my view, where it is not human cockfighting anymore.’’Not long before that, UFC had hired Mark Ratner, then executive director of the Nevada Athletic Commission. His new job: vice president of regulatory affairs for UFC.“One of the most influential people in the regulatory business in fighting, period,’’ Davie said. One critical mission was completed in 2016, when New York lifted its 1997 ban on MMA, thus making it legal in all 50 states.Davie, who was a car dealer and advertiser executive, said he was written off as a “con man’’ when trying to get state officials to approve MMA.“But,’’ Davie said, “hearing it from Mark Ratner, that was different.’’The Impact of President Donald TrumpWhite McCain and others sought to shut down the UFC, Trump helped it survive. He hosted UFC 30 and UFC 31 at his Trump Taj Mahal casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey, at a time when the operators and owners of other major venues turned their backs on the UFC.He also has attended several UFC events since 2019 and asked Dana White, the company’s CEO, to introduce him at the 2024 Republican National Convention.Trump’s association with White was viewed by some as his way to connect to young white men – many of them UFC fans -- who helped propel Trump past Kamala Harris in 2024.Hosting a UFC event at the White House wasn’t Trump’s way of rewarding White, according to the UFC’s CEO.It was Trump’s idea, according to White.White says the UFC will lose money on the event. It's rare to find UFC and losing money in the same sentence. In 2016, the Fertita brothers sold their share of the company for approximately $4 billion. This year Paramount+ became the UFC's new streaming home -- and for that right the UFC is getting $7.7 billion over seven years. This article originally appeared on USA TODAY: UFC Freedom 250: From 'human cockfighting' to White House0 Kommentare 0 Geteilt 33 Ansichten 0 Bewertungen

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMReal Madrid Receive Update On PSG Transfer Targets Neves And VitinhaReal Madrid have essentially received a public "hands-off" warning from Jorge Mendes regarding interest in his clients Vitinha and Joao Neves. AFP via Getty ImagesReal Madrid has essentially received a public "hands-off" warning from Jorge Mendes regarding interest in his clients Vitinha and Joao Neves. “Vitinha and Joao were never an option for anyone," the Portuguese super-agent told transfer market expert Fabrizio Romano, as reported by the Italian on X. “They are non-negotiable for Paris Saint-Germain and they are very, very happy at PSG - they will continue collecting trophies,” Mendes added.Though it is unlikely Madrid would be able to afford both midfielders at the same time, they have attracted interest for different reasons.Much of the La Liga giant’s failure to deliver major silverware in the past two seasons has been put down to being unable to fill the void left by club legends Toni Kroos and Luka Modric. While Kroos retired from football in 2024 after winning the Champions League, Modric stayed at the Bernabeu for another season and continues his trade at AC Milan. In Vitinha, Madrid would acquire someone with the playmaking abilities of Kroos while Neves provides the intensity and muscle Los Blancos have lacked in the center of the park. Without doing anyone a disservice, however, all four of these men are, or were, world class passers of the ball with impressive vision.Real Madrid might need to turn its focus towards another midfielderWith Vitinha and Neves both seemingly out of bounds, Madrid might have to turn its attention towards another midfielder. That could be Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez, who has previously flirted with Madrid in public while punished by his Premier League employers for doing so.One obstacle is Fernandez’s baseball-esque contract until 2032, signed when he joined the west Londoners in a $143.35 million (£107 million) deal from Benfica after winning the World Cup with Argentina.Yet BBC Sport recently reported that Fernandez wants to leave Chelsea, who will demand at least $160 million (£120 million) for the River Plate youth product. After bidding $175 million (€150 million) for a player - namely Julian Alvarez - on Tuesday as Florentino Perez promised he would on the campaign trail to re-election, however, Real Madrid clearly has the money if it is serious about Fernandez. This article was originally published on Forbes.com0 Kommentare 0 Geteilt 33 Ansichten 0 Bewertungen

APNEWS.COMUkraine launches long-range strikes on military and energy sites in RussiaIn this photo provided by Sevastopol mayor Mikhail Razvozhaev telegram channel on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, Firefighters put out a fire after a Ukrainian drone attack hit the building of "Defense of Sevastopol 1854–1855" Panorama in Sevastopol, Crimea. (Sevastopol mayor Mikhail Razvozhaev telegram channel via AP)2026-06-10T09:43:25Z KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — A series of long-range Ukrainian attacks hit targets deep inside Russia on Wednesday, part of Kyiv’s efforts to raise the costs of the war for the Kremlin by striking energy facilities and military industries.President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukrainian forces struck several military and energy infrastructure sites, including a military factory that he said supplied components for Russian drones and missiles. In a post on social media, Zelenskyy said Ukrainian FP-5 Flamingo long-range missiles had hit the facility in Cheboksary, located in the Chuvashiya region more than 900 kilometers (over 560 miles) from the front line. Russia’s Defense Ministry said that air defenses downed 326 Ukrainian drones overnight.Oleg Nikolayev, the head of Chuvashiya, confirmed that the missile attack but didn’t give details. The Astra online news outlet reported that the Ukrainian strike hit the VNIIR-Progress plant that produces antennas for drones. Zelenskyy also said Ukrainian forces struck a refinery in Russia’s Samara region, where Gov. Vyacheslav Fedorishchev said that several industrial plants were damaged by drone strikes and three people were injured. Fedorishchev didn’t name the facilities that were damaged, but Astra carried images of a large fire at the Samara refinery.Zelenskyy added that Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) had also targeted two oil infrastructure facilities in Russia’s Vladimir region, about 700 kilometers from the front line. Read More In Russia-occupied Crimea, a Ukrainian drone hit the building housing a huge panorama painting depicting the defense of the city during 19th century Crimean War. The selectors have opted for a youthful and largely experimental 15-member squad, with several uncapped players included in the setup.Farhan, who has represented Pakistan in 46 T20 Internationals, will lead the national side for the first time in white-ball cricket. Abdul Samad has been appointed vice-captain for the tournament. The squad features four players who are yet to make their T20I debuts for Pakistan: Akif Javed, Ali Raza, Maaz Sadaqat and Saad Masood. SPORTS.YAHOO.COM‘He’s Definitely Going Down’ – Maisangkum Aims To Shatter Petnamkhong’s Hot Streak At ONE Friday Fights 158With a point to prove and something precious to fight for, Maisangkum Sor Yingcharoenkarnchang is ready to deliver the performance of his life at ONE Friday Fights 158. The 25-year-old Thai standout headlines against Petnamkhong Sor Maneekhot in a strawweight Muay Thai clash that goes down live in Asia primetime on June 12 from Bangkok’s historic Lumpinee Stadium.View this post on InstagramWhile some fighters buckle under the weight of ONE Championship’s global platform, Maisangkum thrives. The Thai slugger ravaged his early competition to build a flawless 6-0 start, with four of those wins coming by knockout, engineered by the explosive left hook to the body that has become his calling card. However, that unblemished streak faced a harsh reality check with a shocking first-round knockout loss to Watcharaphon Laochokcharoen at ONE Friday Fights 92. He took those lessons to heart and returned with a unanimous decision victory over Petsangwan Sor Samarngarment at ONE Friday Fights 115. Maisangkum said:“I learned a major lesson from my loss to Watcharaphon: I can’t be careless and too hot-headed, because that leads to a poor performance. I adjusted that for my latest fight.“Getting back into the win column has given me a lot more motivation to keep fighting. I was highly focused, and everything turned out exactly how I envisioned it.”View this post on InstagramWith belief restored, Maisangkum collides with one of the weekly circuit’s most rapidly improving threats. Petnamkhong has racked up five wins and rides a two-bout winning streak that includes a TKO over Tonglampoon FA Group. Maisangkum respects what Petnamkhong brings, but he’s not afraid of trading leather in the pocket. The Boxing Army 3 affiliate explained:“Petnamkhong’s punches aren’t really that concerning, but I have to be extremely careful with his knees and elbows.“Lately, he has gotten physically stronger and has thrown a wider variety of weapons. This led to his beautiful performances, securing back-to-back wins in his last two fights, which has obviously boosted his confidence.”View this post on InstagramTrue to form, Maisangkum plans to weaponize his dazzling footwork and rapid-fire hands. His razor-sharp reflexes should allow him to dart in and out of range, allowing him to dictate the firefight on his own terms.By staying so elusive, he expects to completely exploit Petnamkhong’s deficiencies and punish him for every missed strike. He offered:“My advantage in this fight is my superior speed. If he rushes in carelessly, he might get caught by a counter. I need to evade well and look to counter-attack. As for Petnamkhong’s weakness, it’s his punches, which still aren’t very threatening.”Maisangkum Is Fighting For His Son’s Future And A Main Roster SpotNo longer a careless brawler who initiates chaos without worrying about the repercussions, Maisangkum has evolved into a calculated hunter. His meticulous game plan involves staying relentlessly aggressive while steering clear of Petnamkhong’s most dangerous weapons. However, the fan-favorite striker remains as dangerous as ever, fully prepared to drop the hammer when the time is right. He stated:“My plan for this fight is to gradually move forward and close the distance, prioritizing caution first. Once the first round is out of the way, I’ll step on the gas.“If I see an opening to finish the fight, I’ll take it immediately. I’m confident in my punching power; if I land cleanly, he’s definitely going down.”View this post on InstagramUltimately, Maisangkum is fighting for a prize far greater than personal martial arts glory. He is driven by a deep desire to build a better future for his young son, using every strike as a stepping stone to unlock new opportunities for his family. As he hunts for his 55th career victory this Friday, he knows a dominant finish could finally earn him a life-changing US$100,000 contract and completely alter the trajectory of his journey. He concluded:“I will do my absolute best in this fight. I want to keep this winning streak alive, fight for my son, and open up the opportunity to chase that ONE contract once again.”View this post on InstagramSource0 Kommentare 0 Geteilt 33 Ansichten 0 Bewertungen

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMUpdated look at Eagles' biggest salary cap hits entering training campThe Philadelphia Eagles have become one of the NFL's premier roster-building organizations, balancing championship expectations with long-term financial flexibility. General manager Howie Roseman has consistently found ways to retain core players, restructure contracts, and replenish the roster through the draft while keeping Philadelphia among the league's elite contenders. That balancing act becomes increasingly important as the Eagles prepare for mandatory minicamp and eventually training camp in July. According to Over The Cap, Philadelphia currently has more than $25 million in available cap space despite carrying one of the NFL's most talented rosters. While the offense accounts for more than $164 million in cap expenditures, the organization expects its defensive spending to rise significantly over the next two seasons as players like Jalen Carter, Nolan Smith, Jordan Davis, and Moro Ojomo become extension candidates. Here are the Eagles' 15 largest salary cap hits entering the summer.1. Jalen Hurts, QB — $31,971,800The franchise quarterback carries the largest cap hit on the roster. Philadelphia remains comfortable with that figure after Hurts delivered multiple NFC championships and a Super Bowl title while establishing himself as one of the NFL's elite quarterbacks. A dominant 2026 campaign could put Hurts in line to land back in the top five highest-paid and over $60 million per season. 2. Lane Johnson, OT — $20,299,000Even at age 36, Johnson remains one of the most valuable players on the roster. His importance is reflected both in his cap number and the Eagles' record when he is on the field.3. Jordan Mailata, OT — $15,855,233One of the NFL's best left tackles, Mailata has become one of the league's greatest developmental success stories and now anchors the blind side of Philadelphia's offensive line.4. DeVonta Smith, WR — $10,726,510Following the trade of A.J. Brown, Smith enters the season as Philadelphia's unquestioned No. 1 receiver. His cap hit remains team-friendly compared to many elite wideouts around the league.5. Landon Dickerson, G — $10,275,000The Pro Bowl guard continues to be one of the league's premier interior linemen and a cornerstone of the Eagles' offensive identity.6. Dallas Goedert, TE — $10,230,880Goedert remains one of the NFL's most complete tight ends and a vital piece of the offense despite the emergence of rookie Eli Stowers.7. Saquon Barkley, RB — $9,881,100The 2025 NFL Offensive Player of the Year transformed Philadelphia's offense in his first season and remains one of the best values among elite running backs.8. Zack Baun, LB — $7,538,000After emerging as one of the NFL's best linebackers, Baun's contract looks like one of Roseman's best recent investments.9. Jalen Carter, DT — $6,938,331The All-Pro defensive tackle is still playing on his rookie contract, making him one of the biggest bargains on the roster relative to production.10. Jonathan Greenard, OLB — $6,278,000Greenard's arrival gives the Eagles another proven pass rusher opposite Nolan Smith and strengthens an already talented defensive front.11. Cam Jurgens, C — $5,421,200Jason Kelce's successor has developed into one of the NFL's better young centers and remains an important part of Philadelphia's offensive line continuity.12. Jordan Davis, DT — $5,072,000The former first-round pick remains a critical piece of the Eagles' defensive line rotation and run defense, and is a key piece after becoming the highest-paid nose tackle in NFL history. 13. Jake Elliott, K — $4,893,000One of the most reliable kickers in franchise history continues to justify his contract with clutch performances and postseason success.14. Quinyon Mitchell, CB — $4,041,299Mitchell's rookie contract remains a tremendous value after earning first-team All-Pro honors early in his career.15. Tyler Steen, OL — $3,900,534Steen rounds out the top 15 after positioning himself for a larger role along Philadelphia's offensive line.Just Outside the Top 15Nolan Smith — $3,815,769Makai Lemon — $3,783,706The list illustrates a familiar theme for Philadelphia. The Eagles continue to devote substantial resources to the quarterback, offensive line, and offensive playmakers while relying on draft picks and rookie contracts to build much of the defense. That strategy helped produce a Super Bowl championship and remains central to Roseman's long-term vision. The challenge moving forward will be retaining rising defensive stars like Carter, Smith, Davis, and Ojomo while maintaining the financial flexibility necessary to keep the championship window open. For now, Philadelphia enters minicamp with one of the NFL's healthiest cap situations and enough flexibility to address future extensions while continuing to compete for another Lombardi Trophy. This article originally appeared on Eagles Wire: Eagles' highest-paid players entering the 2026 season0 Kommentare 0 Geteilt 33 Ansichten 0 Bewertungen

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMVeteran wide receiver looking to make his mark with CommandersVan Jefferson feels good and is ready to begin again with the Washington Commanders. The former Florida Gator receiver is now with his fifth NFL team, learning a new system, a new set of teammates, new coaching staff, new management. Jefferson probably heard about the tough side, the difficult challenges of the NFL, from his father, Shawn. Shawn Jefferson had played his college ball at UCF and then spent time playing with four different NFL teams (Chargers 1991-95, Patriots 1996-99, Falcons 2000-2002 and Lions 2003).Son Van Jefferson has been with four NFL teams himself (Rams 2020-2023, Falcons 2023, Steelers 2024, Titans 2025). Van is now pursuing making the Commanders his fifth NFL team. Both Jeffersons showed in their NFL careers that they can play receiver. Secondly, they both exhibited resilience. When one team was done with them, they didn't let it defeat them. They prolonged their NFL careers by starting over and earning new jobs in new NFL surroundings.Dad Shawn played in 195 regular-season games, catching 470 passes for 7,023 receiving yards (14.9) and 29 touchdowns. Son Van has seen time in 94 regular-season games, collecting 166 receptions, accumulating 2,226 receiving yards (13.4), and 13 touchdowns.New #Commanders WR Van Jefferson with high praise for Jayden Daniels#RaiseHailpic.twitter.com/Oz1PgZEoAP— Denton Day (D-Day) (@TheDentonDay) June 9, 2026Commanders fans will recall that last season, the team was at times depleted at receiver with injuries to starters Terry McLaurin, Noah Brown, and Deebo Samuel. Then Luke McCaffrey was lost for the season as well. They signed Treylon Burks and had guys like Chris Moore, Robbie Chosen and Tay Martin playing.GM Adam Peters has ensured depth will be better in 2026 by signing Dyami Brown and Jefferson, re-signing Burks, and drafting Antonio Williams. So they go to training camp in July with veterans in Burks, Brown and Jefferson who will all be younger and better than some of last year's group.Jefferson was visibly excited thinking of the opportunity to play with Jayden Daniels this season. "It's great, you can just see how talented he is, how important the game is to him. Just playing alongside him, I can see it's going to be a great year for him."Jefferson wasn't shy to brag more about Daniels' abilities. "He has the potential to be great. His running ability makes him exceptional. Him learning and Coach Blough teaching him good things, he is going to be even better this year. I'm excited for him."Perhaps Jefferson will make the squad and provide experience and leadership to the Commanders in 2026.This article originally appeared on Commanders Wire: Washington Commanders: Van Jefferson excited about Jayden Daniels0 Kommentare 0 Geteilt 33 Ansichten 0 Bewertungen

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMBrendan Sorsby no longer an option for Jets following court rulingThe New York Jets had undoubtedly been following the Brendan Sorsby story closely. The Texas A&M quarterback was facing a potential NCAA ban for alleged gambling violations. Had Sorsby been permanently banned, he would have needed to enter the NFL supplemental draft, where the Jets would be viewed among his potential suitors. After the NCAA initially denied his appeal for reinstatement, a judge in Lubbock County ruled in favor of Sorby's injunction against the NCAA, making him eligible to play college football this upcoming season, according to USA TODAY Sports. It's a historic ruling that could have a profound impact on the scope of college sports. The saga isn't totally over. Monday's ruling qualified as a major victory for Sorsby and his legal team, but the NCAA is expected to file a formal appeal. No matter what, Sorsby will serve a two-game suspension per the judge’s injunction.Had Sorsby lost his injunction appeal, the NFL supplemental draft would have been his path forward. The Jets are in the market for a long-term franchise quarterback with the aging Geno Smith serving as a temporary solution this season. Would the Jets have been comfortable enough with Sorsby's off-field situation to place a silent bid on his services via the supplemental draft?Barring an appeal, the court ruling means we'll never know. The Jets will have to look elsewhere, likely to the 2027 NFL draft. This article originally appeared on Jets Wire: Brendan Sorsby no longer an option for Jets following court ruling0 Kommentare 0 Geteilt 33 Ansichten 0 Bewertungen

SPORTS.YAHOO.COM'This is maybe Kelly's time to shine' - your views on new keeper contract[BBC]Rangers fans, we asked for your thoughts on Liam Kelly's new deal and if he could take Jack Butland's place in goal. Here's what some of you said...Ken: Yes, glad Kelly has signed a new two-year deal.Ronald: Well done Mr Kelly, you've been very patient and deserve a new contract. Shows loyalty, and hopefully you get a few more gamesScott: I am glad Kelly has signed a new deal. He knows the club and is a reliable deputy. However, I am not convinced he is a number one, and I think Butland, who does need to find the kind of form from his first season at Ibrox, is a slightly better keeper.Dougie: Yes, should be in front of Butland.Eck: Not much between Kelly and Butland. On his day, Butland just edges it, but you can always depend on Liam, he's less likely to make an error too. Good signing!Alan: I'd like to see him get his deserved chance. Jack Butland always has a mistake in him, just like the last day of the season game at Falkirk. If he were more reliable, he'd still be an England international and playing in the English Premiership. Give Kelly the number one jersey.Derek: Personally, I thought Kelly should've played more games last season, the games he came in for, yes he looked nervous, but never got a chance. Confidence was all that was missing. Butland has had lot of brilliant saves, but that's what he's paid for, he also cost us a lot of goals, some absolute howlers as well as games. Falkirk as one example. Never in a month of Sundays is he captain material. I'd definitely try and offload him.Josh: He's a cracking keeper, helped Rangers out every time he is called upon and played a stormer against Celtic to keep us in title fight couple of years ago, Butland has made too many mistakes recently, this is maybe Kelly's time to shine.0 Kommentare 0 Geteilt 33 Ansichten 0 Bewertungen

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMJaguars Day 3 draft pick among early standouts in offseason programsIt's early, but a Day 3 draft pick for the Jacksonville Jaguars is making it difficult to keep him off the field.Tight end Tanner Koziol, a fifth-round pick this year, finds himself in what has become a crowded tight end room. However, his ability to capitalize on the opportunities that have come his way can't be ignored. During OTAs, John Shipley of Jaguars on SI wrote that Koziol had put together some "impressive flashes."Following Tuesday's minicamp practice, Jamal St. Cyr of News-4-Jax wrote that Koziol "might be a guy that is tough to keep off the field."Koziol provided a pass-catching presence at the tight end position during his college career. Over four seasons, he was targeted 337 times, including 123 times at Ball State in 2024 and 94 times this past season at Houston, per PFF.Koziol has been very reliable as well, hauling in 70% of his passes and totaling over 1,500 receiving yards over his final two seasons with 14 touchdowns. Over 50% of his snaps in 2024 and 2025 came from the slot. His skill set allows the Jaguars to play with heavier personnel, utilizing two tight end sets, while still having a pass-catching threat to help create mismatches."I think very clearly he's got a superpower that he offers in a real way and that's catching the football," James Gladstone said after the NFL draft. "Obviously, his production over the course of his college tenure speaks volumes. Being one of, if not the most productive pass catcher in college history, depending on how you look at things, and I think for how we operate, for how Tanner best operates, having a big target like that isn't a bad thing, especially when it comes to red zone play."To earn snaps in season, Koziol will have to continue performing well in training camp when the pads come on. But up to this point, he's been able to stand out and has established a strong foundation for himself when it comes to carving out a role. This article originally appeared on Jaguars Wire: Jaguars rookie TE Tanner Koziol among early standout performers0 Kommentare 0 Geteilt 33 Ansichten 0 Bewertungen

After all, it was Reese's first game back in Chicago since her offseason trade to Atlanta. The former Sky star received plenty of attention leading up to tipoff, with fans eager to see her return to Wintrust Arena. But by halftime, another member of Chicago's celebrated 2024 draft class had stolen the show. Kamilla Cardoso delivered one of her strongest starts of the season and reached a significant milestone in the process, becoming the latest young WNBA star to surpass 1,000 career points.Cardoso hits 1,000-point mark against former teammateThe milestone moment came in fitting fashion. Cardoso scored her 1,000th career point on a tough basket over Reese, creating a memorable scene between two players who helped usher in a new era of Sky basketball just two seasons ago.Chicago quickly celebrated the achievement on social media as fans recognized another important step in Cardoso's development. The 6-foot-7 center was dominant from the opening tip. She opened the game a perfect 3-for-3 from the field and consistently established position in the paint against Atlanta's frontcourt. By halftime, Cardoso had already reached double figures and looked determined to control the game inside.MORE: Sophie Cunningham's four-word reaction before Fever-Mystics game had fans laughingSky building around their young starWhile Reese's departure generated most of the headlines during the offseason, Cardoso has steadily become one of the franchise's most important building blocks.
