SPORTS.YAHOO.COMEverton in talks with Idrissa Gueye over new contract as club targets star Championship midfielderEverton are in talks with Idrissa Gueye about a new deal to keep the veteran midfielder on Merseyside until he is almost 38. Gueye’s contract expires at the end of this month but Everton are keen to keep him for an eighth season and a fifth since returning from Paris Saint-Germain in 2021. The former Aston Villa player, who is representing Senegal at the World Cup, made 25 appearances this season, interrupted by a suspension for a strange sending-off, when he slapped teammate Michael Keane in the win at Old Trafford, and the African Cup of Nations, which his country first won and then had the title stripped from them. The defensive midfielder has scored 10 goals in 236 games for Everton and formed a partnership in the centre of the pitch with James Garner last season. Everton are nevertheless interested in strengthening their midfield with Middlesbrough’s Hayden Hackney, who was named the Championship’s player of the year, a target. They are also expected to try to bring in a right-back, with captain Seamus Coleman ending his playing days with them after 17 years and 435 games. At left-back, Vitalii Mykolenko has committed his future to Everton, signing a new three-year deal.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 36 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWhy DE Arden Key chose to sign with Colts in free agencyEarly on in the NFL's free agency period, the Indianapolis Colts signed defensive end Arden Key. So what made the Colts an attractive destination for him?In short, one big reason is the Colts' secondary."Really it was the back end and the D-line that was already here," Key said on Tuesday. "Back end is a talented back end. It's one of the most talented back ends I've been a part of. So we'll get that half a second hitch with those back end guys. So we'll definitely bring the quarterback down."The Colts have what could be a top cornerback unit in the NFL, with Sauce Gardner and Charvarius Ward outside, along with Justin Walley at the nickel. Then at safety is Cam Bynum, who brings versatility to the back end and impressive ball production. From a pass rusher's perspective, as Key noted, strong play on the back end buys additional time for the defensive front to get home."A lot of impact," Key said of having a player like Gardner at cornerback. "I didn't realize how quick he was when I got here. Then I realized how quick he was, how tall he was to be that quick. He can cover so much ground in small seconds."Key will be competing with Jaylahn Tuimoloau for the starting spot opposite of Laiatu Latu. Generating more consistent pressure on the quarterback will be a must this season for the Colts, and the secondary will play an important role in accomplishing that. This article originally appeared on Colts Wire: How Colts' secondary can give pass rush a boost in 20260 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 36 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMBournemouth Offer Troubled Full-Back to Lazio in Exchange for MandasBournemouth Offer Troubled Full-Back to Lazio in Exchange for MandasBournemouth are hoping to keep Christos Mandas for next season, so they’re trying to tempt Lazio by offering Alex Jimenez in a swap deal.Bournemouth Trying to Swap Alex Jimenez with Lazio Goalkeeper Christos MandasThe Greek goalkeeper spent the second half of the campaign on loan at the Vitality Stadium, but wasn’t given any playing time under Andoni Iraola, who kept faith in Djordje Petrovic. Therefore, the Cherries aren’t willing to exercise their option to buy the 24-year-old for €18 million, which will expire on June 15.But according to Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla, Bournemouth are working on a creative solution to maintain Mandas’ services, offering a swap deal that would send Jimenez back to the Italian peninsula.Jimenez’s Career Path, Stats & Legal TroublesThe 21-year-old is a Real Madrid academy product who joined AC Milan in 2023. The Spaniard had his breakthrough during the 2024/25 campaign, especially under Sergio Conceicao. However, the Rossoneri decided to cash in on him last summer, selling him to Bournemouth for circa €20 million. The full-back enjoyed a positive start to his Premier League experience. He made 32 appearances for the English club, contributing with a goal and an assist. Nevertheless, his campaign ended prematurely, as he was provisionally suspended by the club due to an alleged inappropriate interaction with a minor on social media. Why Lazio Will Be Reluctant to Accept Bournemouth Swap ProposalWhile Lazio could do with a young right-back who can be an upgrade on Adam Marusic and Manuel Lazzari, they are unlikely to be tempted by Jimenez, whose arrival would entail a major risk amid his ongoing legal troubles, not to mention his severely damaged reputation. Moreover, Lazio head coach Gennaro Gattuso would like to hand Mandas the starting role, with Edoardo Motta as his understudy, while Ivan Provedel is negotiating a transfer to Inter Milan.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 36 Visualizações 0 Anterior

Instead, the national side got introduced to perhaps their newest spin hero, Manav Suthar. The 23-year-old absolutely demolished the Afghans to take six wickets in the first innings, bagging the second-best debut bowling figures since 1988.In fact, his bowling was so good that the English county side Warwickshire was impressed enough to offer him a contract for two matches. The 23-year-old could make his Bears debut against Yorkshire at Scarborough on Friday. Playing for Rajasthan domestically, the left-arm spinner from Sri Ganganagar enters county cricket on the back of 136 first-class wickets at an average of 24.89.Suthar turned what was already a commanding India performance into a personal showcase of skill. In recent years, former Test mainstay Cheteshwar Pujara played 52 matches for Sussex, Notts, Yorkshire, and Derbyshire as he established himself as the defining no. 3 for the Indian Test side between 2014 and '19. Now Suthar has the chance to add to that legacy. The county club is equally excited. "We've played some good red-ball cricket already this season, and Manav will bring a new aspect to our bowling attack. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMMike Eruzione Gives Justin Gaethje “Miracle on Ice” Advice Before UFC Freedom 250Image Credit: ufc/ Instagram. Justin Gaethje wanted “Miracle on Ice” energy before his UFC Freedom 250 fight with Ilia Topuria. Mike Eruzione heard the comparison and gave him a few words of advice.Eruzione, the captain of the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team that upset the Soviet Union in Lake Placid, spoke to TMZ Sports after Gaethje brought up the famous underdog win. TMZ reported that Gaethje had said he wanted to bring that kind of energy into his June 14 fight against Topuria.Gaethje enters UFC Freedom 250 as the underdog. CBS Sports listed Topuria as the lightweight champion and Gaethje as the interim champion, with Topuria at -535 and Gaethje at +400 as of June 8.Eruzione did not try to turn the fight into a perfect copy of Lake Placid. His advice was simpler: do not walk in beaten, accept the challenge, and fight.Gaethje Invoked the Miracle on Ice Before Topuria Fight View this post on Instagram A post shared by Combat Forever (@combatforever)TMZ reported that Gaethje, 37, told the outlet last week that he wanted “Miracle on Ice” energy for the Topuria matchup. The comparison comes with Topuria heavily favored and Gaethje trying to unify the lightweight title in one of the most unusual UFC settings yet.Eruzione told TMZ that he knew enough about Gaethje to call him “a tough, tough guy.” He said underdogs cannot start by accepting the public expectation that they are supposed to lose, pointing back to the way the 1980 U.S. hockey team approached the Soviet matchup. The U.S. team beat the Soviet Union 4-3 in the medal round at the 1980 Winter Olympics before going on to win gold. TMZ noted that Herb Brooks coached a group of amateur and college players against a Soviet team widely viewed as one of the strongest ever assembled.Eruzione Told Him to Embrace the ChallengeEruzione’s message to Gaethje was direct. TMZ quoted him telling Gaethje to “go out and fight” and to “embrace the challenge.”He also told TMZ that the underdog has to enjoy the opportunity instead of shrinking from it. The advice fits the exact framing Gaethje created for himself: an American fighter, a major betting gap, and a title fight staged at the White House.TMZ made clear that Gaethje is not the same kind of underdog the 1980 hockey team was. Eruzione’s point was not that the two situations are identical. It was that a fighter walking into a long-odds matchup still has to believe the fight is worth taking.Freedom 250 Is Set for the White House South Lawn View this post on Instagram A post shared by UFC (@ufc)UFC Freedom 250 is scheduled for Sunday, June 14, on the South Lawn of the White House in Washington, D.C. CBS Sports lists the main card start time at 8 p.m. ET, with the event streaming on Paramount+.Topuria vs. Gaethje headlines the card as an undisputed lightweight title fight. CBS Sports also lists Ciryl Gane vs. Alex Pereira for the interim heavyweight title, Sean O’Malley vs. Aiemann Zahabi, Josh Hokit vs. Derrick Lewis, Mauricio Ruffy vs. Michael Chandler, Bo Nickal vs. Kyle Daukaus, and Diego Lopes vs. Steve Garcia. The UFC’s official event page also highlights Topuria and Gaethje as the main-event spotlight for Freedom 250.Topuria Is the Heavy FavoriteCBS Sports reported that Topuria has knocked out three straight former champions and future Hall of Famers while winning titles in two divisions. The outlet described Gaethje as one of the sport’s most exciting fighters and noted that he upset Paddy Pimblett in his previous fight to secure the Topuria matchup. The odds reflect the gap between champion and challenger. CBS Sports listed Topuria at -535 and Gaethje at +400, while Covers listed Topuria at -600 and Gaethje at +400 in its updated UFC Freedom 250 odds.Eruzione’s final point to TMZ was the one Gaethje was reaching for when he mentioned Lake Placid: the favorite can be favored, the public can count out the underdog, and the game still has to be played.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 36 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMSteichen evaluates CJ Allen's play at Colts' linebacker positionIndianapolis Colts' rookie linebacker CJ Allen is presumably stepping into a very important role. Not only is he expected to be a Day 1 starter in the middle of the Colts' defense, but the early assumption is that he will wear the green dot as well. The defender who wears the green dot is responsible for relaying the play-call to the rest of the defense, making sure everyone is positioned correctly pre-snap, and then has to call out any adjustments based on what the offense is doing. This is a role that Allen filled at Georgia, but doing so at the NFL level can come with a learning curve.A crucial element in all of this is being a strong communicator."Even though we're not tackling, I think there is still a lot of communication that goes on with motions, pre-snap motion, making sure everyone's one the same page, getting out of the right place," Shane Steichen said of Allen after Tuesday's minicamp practice. "So that communication at that spot is critical. and we're getting a lot reps in that right now and that'll continue into training camp. But been pleased with where he's at right now."Allen ranked among the best in run defense over both the 2024 and 2025 seasons, according to PFF's metrics. He's been a very sound tackler. In coverage, he allowed 10.6 yards per catch in 2025, with three pass breakups.Allen, 21, was named a first-team All-American following the 2025 season.Linebacker quickly became a major question mark for the Colts this offseason, but Allen has the ability to provide needed stability at this position group. This article originally appeared on Colts Wire: Steichen highlights where Colts' LB CJ Allen is excelling early on0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 36 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMPatriots consider ex-tryout player for special teams ‘quarterback’ roleFOXBOROUGH, MA - JUNE 02: Peter Manuma #34 of the New England Patriots runs through a drill during New England Patriots OTA on June 2, 2026, at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts. (Photo by Summer Lamont/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images) | Icon Sportswire via Getty Images Compared to other moves the New England Patriots made this offseason, trading Marte Mapu to the Houston Texans as part of a late-round draft pick exchange in 2027 was little more than a footnote. However, parting ways with the former third-rounder nonetheless left its mark on the roster.Besides Mapu serving as a backup linebacker, he also played a prominent role in the kicking game. The three-year veteran served as personal punt protector in 2025, meaning that he was responsible for line calls and setting the protection up front. With him off the roster, however, a replacement needs to be found.Among the candidates is an undrafted free agent who only arrived after trying out at rookie minicamp, Peter Manuma.“Peter Manuma from Hawaii, he’s done a good job being back there in some reps,” said special teams coordinator Jeremy Springer ahead of Tuesday’s mandatory minicamp practice at Gillette Stadium.“Very in control of his body. His body movement’s really good. And I like how vocal he is. Very vocal, very confident when he talks. And I think that’s a sign of confidence. I do like that from that position.”Spending his entire four-year college career at Hawaii, Manuma was a productive player for the Rainbow Warriors. He appeared in 49 games with 35 starts, was named a team captain twice, and registered five interceptions and three forced fumbles.Despite his production and some solid athletic traits — Manuma ran a 4.47-second 40-yard dash during the pre-draft process — no NFL team was willing to offer him a contract until after the Patriots’ rookie minicamp. Since then, he has apparently done a good enough job to put himself into consideration for a quarterback-like role in the kicking game.“Every year you try to find a new guy that’s like the quarterback,” Springer said. “You’re just trying to spend a little more time with those guys outside of the meeting time, if you can, if they want to come up and meet with you. You find ways in training camp to get them rolling, and you just try to find extra time with those guys. Hopefully, you get a guy back there that’s confident, can conduct himself, and leads with confidence. That’s what you really need back there.”In Springer’s eyes, Manuma fits the bill. The same is true for some other options.“We have a number of guys,” he said. “Mike Brown’s done a good job coming in here. He did it in Tennessee. Craig Woodson’s always done it. Lan Larison. You try to look for a safety or running back, guys who are confident.”Despite lacking the experience of his competitors, the 23-year-old Manuma seemingly is not missing the confidence New England is looking for. That at least puts him in play for the job, even though more time will pass before Springer and company make a decision.“We have a bunch of guys trying out for it,” Springer said. “We’ll figure out in training camp who’s the guy, and we’ll go from there.”0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 36 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMYankees may have found their Aaron Judge replacement and his first home run proved itYankees may have found their Aaron Judge replacement and his first home run proved it originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The New York Yankees have spent the past several weeks trying to answer one uncomfortable question:How do you survive without Aaron Judge? On Tuesday night in Cleveland, they may have gotten their most encouraging answer yet. Spencer Jones, one of the organization's most intriguing prospects, launched the first home run of his major league career during the Yankees' 3-2 victory over the Guardians. And it wasn't just a home run.It was the kind of blast that immediately had people mentioning Judge. The 25-year-old crushed a cutter from Cleveland starter Slade Cecconi 443 feet to dead center field with an exit velocity of 112.2 mph, producing one of the most impressive swings by a Yankees rookie in years.Even Yankees manager Aaron Boone could hardly believe what he saw."That's a line drive to center for most people," Boone said afterward.Jazz Chisholm said what every Yankees fan was thinkingThe reaction from the Yankees dugout may have been even better than the home run itself. Standing on first base when Jones connected, Jazz Chisholm Jr. admitted his first thought was simple."I thought it was Aaron Judge who hit that," Chisholm said with a smile. That's about as big a compliment as a young Yankees hitter can receive. The numbers back it up.Jones' blast was the third-longest home run by a Yankees player this season, trailing only Judge's 456-foot shot and Giancarlo Stanton's 446-footer. It was also the longest home run hit at Progressive Field all season. For a franchise built around power, Jones instantly placed himself in elite company.MORE: MLB is letting fans decide something at the All-Star Game they've never controlled beforeThe timing couldn't be better for New YorkWhat made the moment even more significant was when it happened. The Yankees are currently navigating life without Judge, who is sidelined with a stress fracture in his right rib. While veterans such as Paul Goldschmidt and Cody Bellinger have helped keep the offense afloat, New York desperately needs another impact bat to emerge. That's where Jones enters the picture. The former first-round pick has always possessed massive power. He hit 85 home runs throughout his minor league career and launched 13 more in just 43 Triple-A games this season. The concern has never been power. It's been contact. Jones entered Tuesday's game having struck out in nearly half of his major league at-bats. The raw tools were obvious, but the consistency remained a question. For one swing, at least, none of that mattered.A glimpse of what the Yankees have been waiting forJones finished the night 2-for-4 and helped power New York to its second straight win over Cleveland. More importantly, he gave Yankees fans a glimpse of why the organization has remained so patient with his development. The home run wasn't just his first in the majors. It was the hardest-hit first career home run by a Yankees player in the Statcast era and one of the longest first career homers in franchise history since tracking began. The Yankees know nobody can replace Aaron Judge. But after watching Jones send a baseball 443 feet into the Cleveland night, it's easy to understand why people inside the organization believe he can help soften the blow.More MLB news:Cardinals send popular clubhouse favorite to Triple-A despite series-winning heroicsLars Nootbaar sends Busch Stadium into frenzy with moment Cardinals fans have waited months to seeOliver Marmol receives honor Cardinals fans never thought they'd see this soonMLB is letting fans decide something at the All-Star Game they've never controlled before0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 36 Visualizações 0 Anterior

Now, the 29-year-old is once again looking for a new opportunity after his time with the Brewers took a poor turn.“Woodford had given up four runs in two of his last four appearances before being designated for assignment by the Brewers,” CBS Sports reported. “Now that he's opted for free agency, the 29-year-old reliever will have the opportunity to catch on with a team in need of right-handed depth out of the bullpen.”FORBES | By Peter ChawagaDodgers Skipper Sends 4-Word Kyle Tucker Message As Struggles Follow Cubs ExitFormer St. Louis Cardinals Draft Pick Seeks New Team After DFAThat move was not entirely surprising given his experience level and prior major-league service time. It seems likely that Woodford can find a big-league opportunity elsewhere, particularly if teams believe he can return to the form he enjoyed with the Cardinals, which saw him log a 4.29 ERA across more than 184 innings.“Woodford shouldn’t have much trouble finding another minor league contract,” Leo Morgenstern wrote for MLB Trade Rumors. “He has seven years of MLB experience with the Cardinals, (Chicago) White Sox, (Pittsburgh) Pirates, (Arizona) Diamondbacks, and Brewers, and he’ll still be under 30 for the rest of the season.”Originally drafted by St. Louis in 2015, Woodford may not remain on the open market for long given the constant demand for pitching depth across baseball. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWhy Newcastle are signing a 'giant' from French second tierEwen Jaouen plays for Stade de Reims in Ligue 2 [Getty Images]Ewen Jaouen was always an avid follower of the Bundesliga from afar, but the Frenchman's future appeared to lie elsewhere."With your characteristics, you could be a goalkeeper in England one day," he was once told. Those words from goalkeeping coach Christophe Lollichon proved rather prophetic.Jaouen has since undergone a medical before completing a move to Newcastle United.Such is his potential, the club are prepared to pay about £18.5m for a goalkeeper who has never played top-flight football before. It is an almighty step up from Stade de Reims in Ligue 2, and he will clearly need time to adapt, but Jaouen's promise is undoubted.Few know that better than Lollichon.Chelsea's former head of goalkeeping has worked closely with, among others, Petr Cech, Thibaut Courtois and Edouard Mendy over the years. He also coached Jaouen during a loan spell at USL Dunkerque in 2024-25."Ewen is only 20 so, if the context is positive, I don't know the limit for him," he told BBC Sport.'He needs to feel the love around him'It is high praise, but there was a reason why Jaouen was monitored by clubs across Europe last season. Not since Mendy has a goalkeeper kept as many clean sheets in a single league campaign (15) for Stade de Reims.Jaouen still requires a lot of work, but the France Under-21s international appears to have all the raw attributes to develop further. He is 6ft 6in tall, proactive in his box, decent with his feet, can produce a big save and has a lot of room for improvement in key areas. No wonder Jaouen feels he is a "modern 'keeper".Lollichon, who remains in touch with Jaouen's camp, even likens his profile to when he first saw Courtois at the age of 17.Rather than throwing him straight in, though, which would be "a little bit dangerous", Lollichon suggests Newcastle will look to protect the "giant" at first."I think the objective of Newcastle is for him to observe the new level in his first season," he said."Ewen was a number one in Ligue 2 last season, but the Premier League is the top. The intensity, the quality of the players, is a big change but Ewen has this ability to observe and adapt very quickly."He's very professional. He's not a guy who speaks all the time - he's very discreet. What I'm saying is a little bit old-fashioned, but he needs to feel love around him."A pivotal loan and a defining night in LilleThis is a player who has certainly come a long way in a relatively short period of time.Following a couple of errors, Jaouen was frustrated after losing his position at Dunkerque to the more experienced Adrian Ortola, who was better at playing out from the back. However, after getting over that initial disappointment, he embraced the chance to learn.Lollichon soon saw progress after initially encountering a young goalkeeper who was "a little bit scared" about certain changes to his game and his positioning at crosses.Jaouen went on to impress against top-level opposition in the French Cup and played a key role in Dunkerque's march to the semi-finals in 2024-25.Not only did Jaouen make a crucial save to deny Jonathan David in normal time in the last-16 win against Lille, the Frenchman also stepped up to take his side's final spot-kick after the tie went to a penalty shootout."He's very solid and these two situations show something very important," Lollichon said."Firstly, he was in a one-on-one situation and David was waiting for Ewen to go down, but he never gave a solution to him. David tried to chip the ball, but Ewen stayed standing. The pressure was very high yet he was very calm."It later went to penalties. We decided to put Ewen as the sixth shooter and he was absolutely clear in his head. When he came to take the penalty, [Lille's former goalkeeper] Vito Mannone tried to dominate the timing of the penalty and Ewen took control."Mannone was a little bit surprised because he had a young guy in front of him, but the penalty was unbelievable."'He could be very interesting'Jaouen returned to Reims, buoyed, as he embarked on his first full season as a senior number one.His performances soon caught the eye of Newcastle, who have been tracking his progress for several months.Head coach Eddie Howe feels Jaouen has a "calmness and presence that belies his age" and believes he can "grow and improve within our environment."This move - Newcastle's first of the window - signals a shift in approach following a bruising summer in 2025.After recruiting a number of Premier League proven players last year, Newcastle are looking at more targets on the continent who could flourish in the right hands."In England, except David Raya, there are not necessarily a lot of proactive goalkeepers," Lollichon added."But Ewen needs to be helped because imagine when you start in a new competition? "He could play English cup games - that would be a very good start - and will try to secure his position, which is normal."If he understands the advantage to play proactively, he could be very interesting."Latest Newcastle news, analysis and fan viewsAsk about Newcastle - what do you want to know?0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 35 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMMourinho says yes to Real Madrid’s interest in Arsenal manMourinho says yes to Real Madrid’s interest in Arsenal manReal Madrid could intensify their interest in Riccardo Calafiori in the coming weeks after Jose Mourinho reportedly gave his approval for the Spanish club to pursue the Italian defender during this transfer window.Calafiori has spent the last two seasons at Arsenal and has consistently impressed since arriving at the Emirates. The defender has continued to demonstrate why he is regarded as one of the finest players in his position, becoming an integral part of the Gunners’ success.Calafiori’s Rise at ArsenalArsenal worked hard to secure Calafiori’s signature because several leading clubs were interested in signing him following his outstanding spell at Bologna. The competition for his services reflected the high regard in which he was held across European football. The Gunners ultimately succeeded in bringing him to North London, and he has since developed into one of the best full-backs in Europe. His performances have played an important role in Arsenal’s achievements, including their Premier League triumph this season.Calafiori remains one of the most highly rated defenders in world football, and it is therefore unsurprising that clubs of Real Madrid’s stature continue to monitor his situation closely.Real Madrid’s Reported InterestAccording to the Metro, Real Madrid’s new manager, Mourinho, has approved a move for the Italian international as the club assesses options to strengthen their defensive unit. The report states that the Portuguese coach believes Calafiori could become a key player for his side and views him as an excellent option at left back. This interest is said to have intensified following David Alaba’s departure and Ferland Mendy’s continued injury concerns.Despite the reported interest from Madrid, Calafiori remains happy in North London and continues to be an important figure within Mikel Arteta’s squad. Arsenal would undoubtedly be reluctant to lose one of their most reliable defenders, particularly given his contribution since joining the club. However, the opportunity to join a club of Real Madrid’s stature could prove difficult for many players to ignore. Whether Calafiori would consider such a move remains uncertain, but speculation surrounding his future is likely to continue as the transfer window progresses._____________________________________________________________________________________________ADMIN COMMENTSo here are some simple rules which I must insist commenters follow….You agree not to give any personal abuse to other Arsenal fans. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMLakers jersey history No. 70/No. 50 — Ed FlemingThrough the 2024-25 season, the Los Angeles Lakers have had a total of 506 players suit up for them, going back to their days in Minneapolis. Some were forgettable, some were serviceable, some were good and a select few were flat-out legendary.During the Lakers' 80th season of existence (they were founded back in 1946 as the Detroit Gems in the National Basketball League), LeBron Wire is taking a look at each player who has worn their jersey, whether it has been a purple and gold one or the ones they donned back in the Midwest during their early years.Ed Fleming, a 6-foot-3 wing, was taken by the Rochester Royals in the third round of the 1955 NBA Draft after four years at Niagara University. After two seasons with Rochester, he was traded to the Lakers, where he finished his NBA career. In three seasons with the Lakers, he averaged 7.4 points, 5.1 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 19 minutes a game and helped them reach the finals in 1959.Fleming averaged 8.6 points, 5.2 rebounds and 1.9 assists in 21.2 minutes per game over his five seasons in the NBA before moving on to the Eastern Professional Basketball League. This article originally appeared on LeBron Wire: Lakers jersey history No. 70/No. 50 — Ed Fleming0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 35 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMNBA exec: Lakers 'have to make a painful decision or two' this summerEven though the Los Angeles Lakers are projected to have roughly $50 million of salary cap space this summer, it will not be easy for them to improve their roster. Not only will they want to keep LeBron James, but they also have other players about to hit the market they will likely want to re-sign. On top of that, the Lakers will want to secure at least one upgrade via free agency or the trade market. In addition to James, Rui Hachimura, Luke Kennard and Jaxson Hayes will be free agents at the end of this month, while Austin Reaves, Marcus Smart and Deandre Ayton can decline their player options for next season to become free agents. It is a virtual certainty that Reaves will opt out, and he could reportedly command $40 million on his next contract. It seems reasonable not to expect the team to make major changes this summer, especially when one considers that, according to Sean Deveney of Heavy Sports, it likes many of the players currently on its roster (h/t Lakers Daily).“That means that the Lakers will have some choices to make,” Deveney wrote. “Increasingly, word is that the Lakers like a lot of the players they have on hand, and rather than making sweeping changes to the roster, could instead bring back a lot of last season’s players with just one midrange addition worth in the $20 million AAV range, likely for a big man.“Making choices on getting rid of players who helped on the floor and in the locker room–Smart and Hachimura, perhaps–won’t be easy.”One NBA executive said that as a result, the Lakers will have at least one difficult decision to make.“They have cap space and that’s a great position to be in,” one Western Conference executive said. “But they really like their group. They’re going to have to make a painful decision or two with that roster.”Los Angeles finished with a 53-29 record and claimed the fourth seed in the Western Conference despite significant injuries to James, Reaves and Luka Doncic. It won 16 of 18 games in late February and March when it remained healthy for an extended stretch, but Doncic and Reaves suffered injuries on April 2 versus the Oklahoma City Thunder, and everything went south at that point. From the Lakers' perspective, they could feel that those injuries ruined their chances to expand on that late-season run and do some real damage in the playoffs. But just about everyone agrees the team lacks depth, athleticism, perimeter defense, 3-point shooting and a solid center rotation. L.A. will have to find a difficult balance between keeping enough of its core and having enough salary-cap flexibility to improve its personnel and take the next step toward becoming a championship contender. This article originally appeared on LeBron Wire: NBA exec: Lakers 'have to make a painful decision or two' this summer0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 35 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMHaiti at the World Cup is more than an underdog tale – it is the story of global migrationTwo men rest in front of a banner of the Haitian national football team in Petion-ville, Port-au-Prince, Haiti, on April 14, 2026. Clarens Siffroy/AFP via Getty ImagesWhen Haiti’s soccer team lines up against Scotland on June 13, 2026, its players will be representing the Caribbean nation at a World Cup for the first time since 1974. They will also embody the complexities and possibilities of Haiti and its diaspora.Of the 26 players selected for the squad, only 10 were born in Haiti. And just one, Woodensky Pierre, plays for a Haitian club. Twelve were born in France of Haitian parents, one in Canada, one in Switzerland and two in the United States. The team is both a symbol of national pride and a condensation of battles Haitians have long fought for dignity and self-determination. Soccer commentator Nico Cantor captured this powerfully when he effused about the deep meaning of Haiti’s qualification for the World Cup on Nov. 18, 2025, exactly 222 years after revolutionary leader Jean‑Jacques Dessalines fought a famous battle against the French on the way to independence. “Their national team has given Haiti something to be proud of,” Cantor said. “It is historic for many reasons.”Imagined communities and 11 named playersDuring the World Cup, individual actions can catapult a player to the status of national icon or never-forgotten villain. But we also see teams either connect and pull together or fragment and fall apart. It can become a powerful metaphor for the fate of nations themselves, resonating with a broader human experience. How does this dynamic shift when a team, like Haiti, consists of players whose personal stories are ones of migration to another country, but who have chosen to represent the nations of their parents in international competition?Haiti is not alone. Since 2004, FIFA has allowed players who have played for the national team of one country to switch to another if they do so before their 21st birthday. In 2020, the rules were further loosened so that players can change in some contexts after that age. Haitian fans in Port-au-Prince celebrate the nation’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Nov. 18, 2025. Clarens Siffroy/AFP via Getty ImagesHaitians at the World CupThe broader history of Haitians at the World Cup has long been shaped by diasporic movement. At the 1950 World Cup, when a scrappy U.S. team composed mostly of immigrants famously defeated England 1-0, it was a Haitian man, Joe Gaetjens, who scored the crucial goal. The USA team that beat England, including Joe Gaetjens, third from right in front row. EMPICS Sport/EMPICS via Getty ImagesDecades later, Jozy Altidore, a child of Haitian immigrants, played in every game for the U.S. during its 2010 World Cup run.Until now, Haiti’s national teams have appeared in only two World Cups. Most recently, the country’s team qualified for the 2023 Women’s World Cup, overcoming many obstacles in the process. Like the men’s team in this year’s competition, the women could not train or play games at home in Haiti. But playing for Haiti helped their star player, Melchie Durmonay, begin a professional career in France, where she plays for the leading team, Olympique de Lyon, and is considered one of the best players in global women’s soccer. The men’s team has previously competed only in the 1974 tournament. On that occasion a team made up of players who had all been born in Haiti shocked an Italy team famed for its impregnable defense. Early in the second half, Haiti’s Emmanuel Sanon broke away to catch a masterful pass downfield, dribbled expertly around an Italian defender and powered the ball into the goal. Emmanuel Sanon (20) scores one of his – and Haiti’s – only two World Cup goals, on June 15, 1974. Mirror Syndication International/Mirrorpix via Getty ImagesIt remains the most celebrated goal in Haitian football. And although Haiti lost that game 3-1, Sanon became a national hero. He went on to a professional career in Florida in the 1980s and later managed the Haitian national team. When he died in Orlando in 2008, he was buried and received a state funeral in Haiti. A soccer park is named after him in Miami’s Little Haiti in recognition of his place in the country’s history. Laura Wagner, CC BY-SAA diaspora on the pitchThe life histories brought together for the 2026 tournament capture the broader story of Haitian migration, but they also illustrate the different kinds of opportunities young athletes have in different countries. Some of Haiti’s players, like Hannes Delcroix, have had access to the most elite and well-resourced structures in global soccer. He was born in the Artibonite Valley in Haiti but as a child moved with his parents to Belgium. There, he trained at the youth academy of the Belgium professional team Anderlecht and also played on Belgium’s international youth teams. He now plays professionally in Switzerland. Haiti’s Hannes Delcroix on the ball during a friendly match against Tunisia on March 28, 2026. Vaughn Ridley/Getty ImagesBut it is France’s soccer infrastructure that has in many ways most deeply shaped the trajectories of Haiti’s team. The Haitian diaspora in France is much smaller than in the U.S. – it is estimated at around 100,000 – but its children have had access to one of the most successful systems for soccer training in the world. Facing many social and economic barriers, children of immigrants, many of whom live in the housing projects in the suburbs of Paris and other French cities, often see an athletic career as their best chance for success. And the country invests heavily in sporting infrastructure with high level of state investment at the local and national level. As a result, immigrant communities in France have become some of the most remarkable generators of soccer talent in the world. Two of the standouts of the French national team – Ousmane Dembele and Kylian Mbappé – are products of the French soccer system. and both are sons of African immigrants. Meanwhile, 75 players born in France will be playing on non-French national teams.Paths to the World CupHaiti’s talisman and top scorer, Duckens Nazon, was born in a Parisian suburb and played with a series of French professional teams before being recruited to the English team Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2017. His stint there was brief, and he has since moved a few times, playing professionally in Iran for Estaghlal this past year and having to make a harrowing escape from the war there in order to be able to play in the World Cup. The strong representation of Franco-Haitian players, and the relatively small number of those born in the U.S., speaks volumes about the difference in the infrastructure and structure of opportunity around soccer in the two countries. The U.S. is home to the largest Haitian diaspora in the world, with a population of approximately 1.1 million registered in the 2021 census. Actual numbers – both then and now – are likely larger. Yet only two players born in the U.S. are on Haiti’s World Cup squad: Derrick Etienne Jr., born in Richmond, Virginia, and Duke Lacroix, born in New Jersey. In both cases, the players were able to find their way to the pathways for professional sport that exist in the U.S. – notably elite universities – that are not available to many other children of Haitian immigrants.Frantzdy Pierrot, one of the team’s stars, is part of a more recent history of migration from Haiti to the U.S. He was born in Cap Haïtien in 1995 but migrated to Melrose, Massachusetts, as a child. After high school there, he played at Northeastern University and then Coastal Carolina University before embarking on a professional career that has taken him to England, France, Israel and Turkey. On May 26, 2026, the governor of Massachusetts celebrated his achievements by declaring that day Frantzdy Pierrot Day in the state. A shopkeeper sells footballs in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, on April 14, 2026. Clarens Siffroy/AFP via Getty ImagesA global HaitiWhatever happens on the pitch for Haiti this tournament, their games are going to be an occasion for unity and celebration. Haiti team’s fans are legendary for their passion. One of the most intense victory celebrations I have witnessed took place outside a stadium in Harrison, New Jersey, in June 2019 when Haiti defeated Costa Rica in a Gold Cup group match. The parking lot filled up for many hours afterward, with Rara music and dancing. Sadly, a visa ban against Haiti means that few Haitians will be able to travel from their country to the U.S. to watch their team play. But on June 13, Haiti itself will be at a standstill during the games, and across the diaspora – in Boston, New York, Houston, Montreal and Paris, but also in the Bahamas, Brazil, Chile and other parts of Latin America – crowds will gather to be together in pride. Many others, me included, will join in supporting Haiti out of solidarity, taken by this story of possibility. And if, like Sanon in 1974, one of Haiti’s new generation of players breaks through and scores a goal, the celebration will be truly global. This article is republished from The Conversation, a nonprofit, independent news organization bringing you facts and trustworthy analysis to help you make sense of our complex world. They need to say what they believe,” and added, “I’m a straight male, and I’m proud of that.” In a final segment, Masterson gestured to his own MAGA apparel and asked an older male MAGA supporter, “I can’t wear a MAGA hat in some places because some people don’t like that identity. Can you imagine going someplace and being attacked just for your identity?” The man replied, “That’s crazy.” MAGA shows me their Pride!#happypride pic.twitter.com/6AWN1d0jgs— Walter Masterson (@waltermasterson) June 8, 2026 Masterson has long used his videos, satirical comedy, and social media presence to highlight the hypocrisy of anti-LGBTQ+ political figures. In 2023, Masterson trolled the anti-LGBTQ+, pro-book-banning, “parents’ rights” extremist group Moms for Liberty by reading sexually violent passages from the Bible during a Pennsylvania school board meeting. “This book is filled with overt sexual acts of violence, it celebrates mass killings, and it’s being used to indoctrinate our children,” Masterson said at the meeting. His speech pointed out the hypocrisy of pro-book-banning policies that seek to censor less explicit, LGBTQ+-inclusive texts while allowing the Bible to remain on school bookshelves. In 2022, Masterson mocked a New York school board after it forced a teacher to take down a Pride flag in her classroom. “As a patriot, I love freedom of speech,” he said while dressed in a U.S. flag shirt. “Except when it comes to Pride flags in schools, teaching history. There’s a whole list of books I want to ban from the school library. I want to ban kneeling in football games.” In other instances, Masterson heckled Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-NY) for voting to expand funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and he blasted an Oklahoma school board over the death of a nonbinary student. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMNC State May Not Be Done With Will Wade Just YetBATON ROUGE, LOUISIANA - MARCH 26: Head coach Will Wade of the LSU Tigers predicts how his first season back in Baton Rouge is going to go. (Photo by Mitchell Scaglione/LSU/University Images via Getty Images) When Will Wade left NC State this spring, the university was angry and just fine with seeing the back of him as he walked out on the Pack for LSU.Fast forward a couple of months, and State has made it clear they’re not quite done with Wade yet. NC State is investigating Wade for possibly violating the Unfair and Deceptive Trade Practices Act, a state law in North Carolina, and that either he, or LSU, or both, may have to pay damages and NC State’s attorneys as well. Obviously this ups the stakes. If the university does file suit against Wade and LSU, they’ll get to rifle through all of their e-mails, texts, and other documents as part of discovery. That will almost certainly get messy, so it won’t surprise us if Wade and LSU move to settle out of court. And if State has a sense of humor, they’ll move that money directly into the NIL fund. Will Wade, no doubt, would appreciate the irony. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMNew-look Patriots unite Palouse Legion baseballJun. 10—A new era of summer baseball has arrived on the Palouse. After years of operating as separate programs, the Pullman Posse, Whitman County Cougars and Palouse Patriots have merged under one banner, under the Palouse Patriots, and are uniting players from across the region into a three-tier American Legion baseball system. The restructured format features three teams — Patriots AAA (19U), Patriots AA (17U) and Patriots A (16U) — with coaches not only focused on winning games but also developing young players for future varsity and collegiate opportunities.Palouse Patriots AAAThe Patriots AAA squad is led by first-year coach Nate Clark.During the spring, he spends his time coaching the Pullman junior varsity.Clark called the Patriots a gritty team full of utility players who are able to play in multiple spots on the field."Cash McCann is a key returner," Clark said. "Will Denney is our starting shortstop. Both of those guys are just great. They're just baseball (guys), like live and breathe the game kind of guys, great kids to have in the dugout."McCann, Denney and Carson Forar are three of the players who have made the Legion program "possible" for the past few years, Clark said. The Patriots have an abundance of pitchers, including Brody Barnett, who is a tall lefty and was an all-district player as a sophomore, and Zachary Kroll, who can throw into the mid-80s.Clark said it is important to create a fun and competitive environment for the players and with the help of assistant coaches Nate Elbracht and JD Peterson, they are accomplishing that.Peterson and Elbracht both have experience playing college baseball and both played for Clark in the past. They are a good example for the players to realize what they can become if they "grind at the college level," Clark said."There are people here on the Palouse that care about baseball, and we care about player development, and we can provide them opportunities to get them ready to play at the next level," the coach said.Clark said the focus is on individual development and preparing players to play better at the next level in college or to play better for their varsity teams."I think mostly our goals are to build a program for the kids that helps them develop in a personal sense," Clark said. "Then develop some of those (physical) traits and then getting them in the weight room, and then most importantly, the goal for this year is to build that program up and provide value to them, so that they feel compelled to come back next year and continue to grow the organization. I think a great goal for us would be to go to State and compete at State."Palouse Patriots AANate Akesson is the headman for the Patriots AA team and spent last year as an assistant coach for the Whitman County Cougars."They're go-getters," Akesson said of the team. "We got guys who play multiple sports. We got some very athletic dudes."Akesson said that hitting is the strength of the team, led by Ross Cofer and Will Hyatt."(Cofer) was starting varsity for Colfax, and he decided he wanted to play down on AA for us, and he's a big lefty, he looks like a grown man, he's 15 years old," Akesson said. "He's insane, he hits the ball hard, he throws the ball hard, he picks the ball up well, he just kind of does it all. We got Will Hyatt on the team; he's going to be a stud for us this year. He swings it well, he's the No. 1 hitter, shortstop. He's the No. 2 pitcher. He's just a dude who does it all. So that'll be fun to watch him develop this season."Akesson said that he wants to see his group gain more confidence when they step on the field. He said that physical development is important as well, but the mental side might be more important. It will be critical for the Patriots to control the game in every aspect, not letting the speed of the game get to them and to take their time in the box, on the mound or in the field."Baseball is hard because it's all failure," Akesson said. "I mean, you make it to the Hall of Fame when you fail seven out of 10 times. So it's again a failure, and it's hard to teach these kids that you're going to fail. It's how you come back from failure. But that would kind of be the main thing that I want to see development-wise out of these guys is being able to bounce back."Akesson said that the plan is to have everybody learn something from the season, and that there is always something to be learned from every experience. Joy in the game is important, too."I hope these guys have a ton of fun this year, they have a blast and look forward to next year," Akesson said. "That's kind of the main goal why we do all this. That's the reason I'm doing it. That's the reason why I know most of the kids are doing it, because it is just a lot of fun."Palouse Patriots AJames Bledsoe Jr. is in his first year as the head coach of the Patriots A.He has spent 10 years doing private baseball lessons."I was hired primarily to not really be an administrative role; it was more of a helping players develop, and everything like that," Bledsoe said. "So, wins and losses aren't necessarily what I'm going for. I'm looking at trying to make these kids better by the end of the summer. ... so it's just developing them. ... Some of them are just preparing for high school ball in general, and then some I'm trying to prepare for varsity ball."Of key players, Bledsoe pointed out Toby Stewart, Keegan Caessens, Silas Nollmeyer, Carson Thomas, Markus Hauck, Cooper Wells and Brody Pfaff."Toby Stewart is an absolute stud, great attitude," Bledsoe said. "I saw him as a team leader from Day 1, and Keagan Caessens is going to be in that role too."Bledsoe said that coaching the right attitude into his players is important for the Patriots. He said that with the players so young, it is important to teach them that failure is going to happen often in baseball, and the biggest thing is to "flush it and move on.""This is a game where the best of the best fail seven out of 10 times, so just taking things in stride and being able to flush it when you don't perform and not getting too heavy when you're doing well, so just trying to get to a stable place," Bledsoe said. "It's just trying to remind them it's going to be a long summer, a lot of games, a lot of innings to be played. You're gonna get another shot."Finally, he said that the Patriots are a very fun group to be around."Just a lot of really, really nice kids," the coach said. "They really helped me rekindle my love for baseball. I didn't know how much I was missing it, and when I say all smiles, I don't mean like goofy and like slacking off and stuff like that. But in general, the team's demeanor is really good, all of the guys like each other, and their heads are held high right now."Junt can be reached at 208-848-2258, tjunt@lmtribune.com or on X @TrevorJunt.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 35 Visualizações 0 Anterior -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMHarlequins 'perfect fit' for Packer after Saracens exitTwo-time Women's Rugby World Cup-winner Marlie Packer has agreed to join Harlequins Women next season, after announcing she is leaving Saracens.Speaking exclusively to BBC Sport, the 36-year-old admitted she had even considered retirement when the 2025-26 campaign was over. But after Saracens told her there was no contract for her to stay at the club, she took it on herself and approached Harlequins before the start of the Women's Six Nations. The draw of Quins' "world class" back row was part of her decision, as she also confirmed her desire to play for the British and Irish Lions in 2027."You've got the back row of Alex Calendar [and] Aoife Wafer - they're world-class back-row players and they're all potential Lions players," she said."Why would I not want to chuck myself in the mix with them, play with them, see how we play off each other, see if [Lions head coach] Jo Yapp suddenly goes, 'oh yeah, that's quite a good combination'?"I don't think I really had my eyes on the Lions, probably, before the Six Nations."Coming off the back of it, I still want to put my hat in the ring for that, and I think moving to Quins definitely does that."Retirement plans shelvedPacker had initially considered retiring at the end of this season, although she had not shared these thoughts with others. She said a conversation with England head coach John Mitchell, where he "posed a good couple of questions to me", helped her refocus. And with no contract on the table at Saracens, Packer had to act."I'm more of a proactive instead of a reactive kind of person," she said. "Now I've got [son] Oliver and a mortgage, so I got in touch with Harlequins just to see if the door was open."Before Quins head coach Ross Chisholm had met with Packer, he attended the Red Roses' training and was impressed with the former England skipper's attitude and impact on the group."We just had quite an open conversation," Packer added."He said, 'I really loved how you trained with the Red Roses [and] actually seeing you in training, you're someone that would be a really good fit for Harlequins'."With Packer impressing for England in the Six Nations, picking up player of the match awards against Wales and Italy, she knew that, once the tournament concluded, she had to "make some life choices".As she returned to Saracens, it was made clear by head coach Alex Austerberry that there was still no new deal for her, so she decided it was time to move on.And with her partner, fellow England World Cup winner Rosie Galligan, pregnant, and their son Oliver settled at a nearby school, there seemed one obvious option."The fact that Harlequins was only 20 minutes down the road, the fit just seemed to be perfect," she said.'I want to help Quins to be champions'Despite future aspirations to get into coaching and discussions to get involved with BUCS university rugby, she joins Harlequins just as a player. With a second child on the way, Packer knew that committing to both coaching and playing would be too big a draw on her time.Packer would not be drawn on rumours that her partner Galligan would also be joining her at Quins. And while Saracens and Harlequins have had a long-standing rivalry across the women's and men's setups, Packer has no issue with moving across London."Harlequins made me feel valued," she said."Something else has excited me, something else is going to give me a driver to be the best version of Marlie Packer, and get her into the Lions."I want to help Harlequins be back in the top four, but not just be a top four contender. We want to be back as Premiership Women's Rugby [PWR] champions."Despite Saracens not offering her a 10th year Packer said Saracens would always have a special place in her heart. She is also determined to finish on a high with another trophy, as Sarries head into their semi-final with Exeter Chiefs on Sunday."A couple of times over the last few seasons, we've just been the bridesmaids and not the finished article, which has been disappointing," Packer added."But I'd love to sign off this season as a PWR champion with Saracens four times."0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 35 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMNBA Finals 2026: Knicks-Spurs series delivering monster ratings, with viewership up over 85 percentHow excited are New York Knicks fans to watch their team potentially win its first NBA championship since 1973? Knicks fans have come out in a major way to support their team all season, and that has only gotten more intense during the 2026 NBA Finals.Viewership is way up after the first two games of the Finals, with an average of 16.68 million viewers tuning in for Game 1 and Game 2, per Front Office Sports. That figure is up 89 percent compared to 2025 and represents the best NBA Finals ratings numbers in eight years. Play 2026 Soccer Pick 'Em with FOX One and make your picks for the world's biggest soccer tournamentIt shouldn’t necessarily come as a surprise that ratings are up in the NBA. The Knicks remain one of the league’s most popular teams. It certainly helps that they play in biggest city in the United States. Still, their fans are clearly passionate, and come out in droves to show their support for the franchise. On the other side, the San Antonio Spurs are also drawing from a large pool of fans. San Antonio is the sixth-biggest city in the country and the Spurs have a history of success that has helped grow the fanbase over the years. It helps that the team employs big man Victor Wembanyama, one of the league’s biggest stars. Because of Wembanyama’s presence, the Finals are probably drawing in casual NBA fans, ones who don’t get to see Wembanyama often and want to see what all the hype is about. The quality of the games likely also contributed to massive viewership numbers. The Knicks won Game 1 by 10 points, but it was an incredibly close game until the final quarter. Game 2 was a one-point win by the Knicks, making it an even more exciting contest for viewers.Ratings for Game 3 — which should be released Wednesday — should be similarly high. The Knicks and Spurs competed in yet another close one in Game 3, with the Spurs finally picking up a win in the series. With Game 4 slated for Wednesday, casual NBA fans — and executives over at ABC — are probably hoping the Spurs can pull even, ensuring more games in the series. Fans of the Knicks and Spurs may feel differently, however, as the first three games of the Finals have been stressful enough.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 35 Visualizações 0 Anterior

The namesake of arguably the world’s most famous wizard is training in a hat ahead of the Football World Cup.At Sweden’s opening training session in Dallas, however, Graham Potter wasn’t wearing a wizard’s hat, but a cowboy hat. As befits a “real” Texan, the Sweden head coach had naturally already mastered the cowboy greeting too.The team and the spectators were clearly amused – and so were we!This article was translated into English by Artificial Intelligence. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMMikaela Mayer vs Chantelle Cameron unification set for Aug. 29LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - MARCH 29: WBO women's welterweight champion Mikaela Mayer waits for the start of her title defense against Sandy Ryan at BleauLive Theater at Fontainebleau Las Vegas on March 29, 2025 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Mayer retained her title by unanimous decision. (Photo by Steve Marcus/Getty Images) | Getty Images Most Valuable Promotions officially announced today that they’ve set a women’s super welterweight title unification between Mikaela Mayer and Chantelle Cameron, which will headline a MVPW-06 card on August 29 in Birmingham, England. The card will stream live on both Sky Sports and ESPN+.Mayer (22-2, 5 KOs) holds the WBC and WBA world titles and is most recently coming off a unanimous decision win over Mary Spencer last October.“Chantelle Cameron has always been a name I’ve hoped to add to my resume and a fight I feel the sport of boxing deserves,” said Mikaela Mayer. “With our come forward, aggressive styles, I have no doubt that it will be one of the most exciting fights of our generation. Giving the fans the fights they wanna see is what I do best…so here you go. Again.”Cameron (22-1, 8 KOs) holds the WBO world title and most recently took a decision over Michaela Kotaskova this past April. “I am over the moon this fight has been made. I asked MVP for this fight and they have delivered,” said Chantelle Cameron. “I’ve always said I want the biggest fights in women’s boxing, and there isn’t a bigger fight right now than me against Mikaela Mayer. We’re both top-five pound-for-pound fighters, we’re both world champions, and we’re both coming to win. “I’ve been vocal about wanting to compete under equal rules and fight three-minute rounds, and that’s still something I strongly believe in. But Mikaela is the unified champion at 154 pounds and has made it clear she wants this fight over two-minute rounds, so I respect that. For me, the most important thing was making the biggest fight possible for the sport and giving the fans the matchup they’ve been asking for. Thanks to my team, MVP, and Sky Sports for this huge opportunity. Saturday, August 29th. Let’s go.”Also on the card will be a co-feature from Caroline Dubois (13-0-1, 5 KOs), who will take on Amelia Moore (4-0, 1 KO) as chief support to the main event.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 35 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMEverything wrong with the 2026 World CupMonths before World Cup 2026 got underway, senior figures within Fifa already found the planning hadn’t been going “as expected”. And that’s saying something. When the hosting of Canada-Mexico-USAwas confirmed back in 2018, after all, the widespread feeling in football circles was that it was a return to the “familiar”.Two of the countries had already hosted three of the most successful World Cups of all, and the promise in the bid-book was that this would be “low-risk and operational certainty”. It of course greatly aided such feelings that another promise was about record revenue projections of $14bn.A first full tournament under Gianni Infantino’s presidency was intended to be a badly-needed move away from the inherited issues of Russia and Qatar, which were two of the most politicised World Cups of all time. The 2026 World Cup is plagued with issues (Getty/AP)In other words, the World Cup could get back to focusing on what actually matters, the football… and the money it can generate.Nothing could have been further from the truth. This tournament has arguably been even more politicised, in a number of different ways. Far from the “familiar”, or even things not going as expected, the 2026 World Cup has thrown up more problems that have been utterly unprecedented than in the competition’s entire 92-year history.By far the most grave of those is a World Cup host starting a war against one of the participant nations, as happened with the USA’s attack on Iran at the end of February. The tournament has never witnessed anything like that.If it was almost any other country, the debate would be about moving it, or boycotting. There has not been much debate about boycotting the World Cup (AFP/Getty)Even before that landmark conflict, though, tournament figures were already grappling with far more issues than they knew how to handle. If 2026 doesn’t have a moral travesty so central to the very staging of the tournament like Qatar’s use of “slave labour”, and it is still held in a liberal democracy unlike Russia, the unique nature of the US state and its relationship with its co-hosts has created a series of more disparate problems. An Amnesty report even described the USA as “facing a human rights emergency” around the World Cup, in particular regarding the “chilling threat” posed to fans and even players by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).The money that Fifa were so greedy for is actually just one other element, creating a cost prohibitive to football’s actual global support and even expanding the tournament to such an obscene size that it might well dilute the good that the competition is all about. It says a lot about the 2026 World Cup that these are among the least of its issues...Fifa president Gianni Infantino has steadily been selling football’s soul (Getty)The Iranian war and a host attacking a qualified nationWhen news started to filter through that Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had been killed in a US strike, the Fifa leadership were at Hensol Castle in Wales for the 140th Annual General Meeting of the International Football Association Board and listening to an opera singer, as they desperately scrolled their phone for news. They already knew this was going to be the gravest issue around this World Cup, and Fifa’s biggest test. Concerns like that, and even Iran’s very participation, still seemed utterly trivial when it emerged that 168 people – including 110 children – had been killed after a missile hit a primary school in Minab. The Iranian squad wore lapel pins highlighting the atrocity on landing in Mexico on Monday, having been denied both a base in the United States and visas for many staff. Again, regardless of opinions on the conflict, it is a historic landmark for the tournament. Nothing like this has ever happened before, and if it was any other country there would doubtless be debates about the tournament being stripped. Instead, most of the focus has been on whether the Iranian national team – who have their own complex relationship with the state – can even play in a competition they fairly qualified for. The conflict is meanwhile now in its 102nd day, and set to weigh over this entire World Cup – including a potential knock-out meeting between Iran and the US.A World Cup host had never before started a war with one of the participant nations just months before the tournament (Getty)US foreign policy and the Russia parallelSuch have been geopolitical developments that the Fifa Peace Prize has gone from a controversy in its own right to the mere punchline of a particularly bad-taste joke. Since Infantino obsequiously handed Donald Trump the award, the US has carried out military operations in four different countries – including Iran – to take it to 12 (depending on certain interpretations) since this World Cup hosting was awarded in 2018. This is already far more than any other host from the point of being granted the tournament, but more relevant is what human rights groups like FairSquare would term as acts of aggression: those “unprovoked, uninvited and not sanctioned by the UN Security Council”. Venuzuela and Iran would fall under this, to go with issues like: the kidnapping of a foreign head of state; extrajudicial killings in the Caribbean; the sanctioning of International Criminal Court Judges and the withdrawal from the UN Human Rights Council, the World Health Organisation and UNESCO. While the foreign policies of hosts have historically been cast as generally separate to the staging of a World Cup, the parameters have now shifted due to the banning of Russia for the invasion of Ukraine. Multiple human rights groups and international bodies have pointed to US support for Israel in what a United Nations panel concluded was a “genocide” in Palestine. FairSquare meanwhile describe how Trump’s “dismantling of the international system and rule of law have been given the Fifa seal of approval”.Trump receiving the Fifa Peace Prize has become a punchline (Getty)Visa issues and the breaking of World Cup principlesBy far the biggest controversy on the eve of the tournament, and also one that articulates so many of the other issues. A mere two days before the World Cup started, celebrated Somali referee Omar Artan and numerous Iranian staff were denied entry. Iraq striker Aymen Hussein was questioned for hours on his arrival in Chicago, while the Senegal and Uzbekistan teams were subjected to heavy security searches in country. Again, it's telling that this has never previously been an issue at any modern World Cup. This is because a contractual condition of hosting the tournament is free movement for participants. As Infantino himself said in 2017: “It’s obvious when it comes to Fifa competitions, any team, including the supporters and officials of that team, who qualify for a World Cup need to have access to the country, otherwise there is no World Cup.”And despite the repeated flagging of potential issues for 2026, Infantino said only last year: “There is a lot of misconception out there. Everyone will be welcome in Canada, Mexico and the United States for the Fifa World Cup next year.” That has not proven to be the case. And while Fifa is now hardline insisting it is “not involved in host country immigration processes”, that is rather different to the stance taken when Indonesia refused entry to the Israeli team for the under-20 World Cup in 2023. They were promptly stripped of hosting, with Fifa vaguely talking of “current circumstances”. This controversy looks all the worse for Fifa given how the Trump administration's attitude to certain countries – and especially Muslim countries – had long been flagged, and facilitating this was one of the justifications for their relationship. As it is, the very course of the tournament could be affected by unequal treatment of certain teams. It says much that Russia and Qatar were seen as much more welcoming.Somali referee Omar Artan has been denied entry to the United States (AP)The Infantino-Trump relationshipThe visa issue should only put more focus on yet another unprecedented aspect of this tournament, which is the depth of the relationship between the current presidents of Fifa and the United States. There’s never been anything like it, not even Joao Havelange and General Jorge Rafael Videla or Infantino with Vladimir Putin. Fifa insiders long argued that a constant placating of Trump was necessary due to how his erratic nature could cause chaos for the tournament, but we are seeing that anyway. Issues like facilitating visas were supposed to be precisely one of the justifications for this cosying up. The total lack of help on many World Cup-related details instead begs the question of why Infantino engaged in this, given the relationship went against Fifa statutes. The global governing body are supposed to be politically neutral, specifically so they can adequately navigate complex geopolitics. Infantino has nevertheless been a fixture at so many Trump political events including his inauguration. It is all the more conspicuous that this didn’t happen with the previous Democrat administration. A feature of Infantino’s presidency has been proximity to authoritarian-facing premiers and even autocratic leaders, but the relationship with Trump is of another level to anything else. It raises a core question over how the World Cup is being used.Trump and Infantino’s relationship is unprecedented (PA)The “MAGA World Cup” and “sportswashing”With most of the World Cup’s internal issues coming in Democrat cities, and Democrat-leaning entities like US Soccer largely excluded, this World Cup already has a very “red” tinge. The Independent reported as long ago as March 2025 that multiple football figures were talking about Fifa facilitating “the MAGA World Cup”. “Trump is going to use it to promote his political ideology,” as one senior source said. In other words, “sportswashing”. Human rights groups like Amnesty were by then already worried that the World Cup would be used as a platform for hateful rhetoric, protests being suppressed and unions having deals undercut, to ultimately further an ongoing authoritarian turn in global politics.Trump has tried to turn this into the Maga World Cup (AFP/Getty)The “chilling threat” of ICEAmong the most serious issues at this World Cup is the possibility of someone entering the country or even attending a game and suddenly being hauled away by ICE officers. It certainly feels a far cry from the global party that the World Cup is supposed to represent, something all the more ironic given that this is the biggest ever at 48 teams. An Amnesty report titled “Humanity Must Win” Defending rights, tackling repression at the 2026 Fifa World Cup” has already described a potential “human rights emergency” characterised by the “chilling threat” of “discriminatory immigration policies, mass detentions and arbitrary arrests by masked, armed agents from ICE, US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and other agencies”. The report similarly pointed to how Dallas, Houston and Miami had all signed “problematic agreements for local law enforcement agencies to collaborate with ICE”.Amnesty added that some fans face “intrusive surveillance, with proposals to force visitors to make their social media accounts available for vetting and screening for ‘anti-Americanism’.“Despite the astounding numbers of arrests and deportations, neither Fifa nor the US authorities have provided any guarantees that fans and local communities will be safe from ethnic and racial profiling, indiscriminate raids, or unlawful detention and deportation,” said Amnesty International’s Head of Economic and Social Justice, Steve Cockburn. He also references how the US government has deported more than 500,000 from the country in 2025 – “more than six times as many people than will watch the World Cup final in the MetLife Stadium”. FairSquare have criticised Fifa for “washing their hands” of their responsibilities. ICE has not been clear about its policy around the tournament, while the eve of the opening game has seen Congress debating a massive injection of funding to scale up deportations further. The prospect of ICE raids have hung over the tournament (Getty)Gun violenceSaturday’s reports that nine people were injured in a shooting near England’s World Cup base in Kansas City, Missouri raised another major safety issue for fans at this tournament. That is the possibility of firearms attacks, given how the Gun Violence Archive last year recorded more than 400 mass shootings. A similar issue was a huge theme of South Africa 2010, but it speaks to the multiple controversies around this World Cup that one of the United States’ most divisive political subjects has barely been mentioned.NarcoviolenceSince the majority of this World Cup is in the US, the majority of the focus has been there, but February saw another – yes – unprecedented development in co-hosts Mexico. Narcoviolence erupted in a host city mere months before the tournament. Guadalajara saw the Jalisco cartel put up roadblocks and torch cars after their leader, “El Mencho”, was killed in a security operation. Debate has since raged over how safe Mexico can be. The issue also touched on one of many points of tension between the co-hosts. Trump had previously spoken about how Mexican counterpart Claudia Sheinbaum is “very frightened of the cartels” and that “something is going to have to be done with Mexico”. That followed threats of a US trade war with Mexico and Canada. For now, Guadalajara’s city centre is quiet, outside the buzz for the tournament.Guadalajara saw cars torched after “El Mencho” was killed in a security operation (Getty)Suppression of protests in all three co-hostsWhile Mexico mobilised 100,000 security personnel in response to high levels of violence, Amnesty’s report raised concerns about the risks for protestors. The body specifically referenced women activists who are planning a peaceful demonstration for the opening match at the Azteca Stadium, seeking truth, justice and remedy for the disappearance of loved ones. Since World Cups often offer a platform for demonstrations, too – especially amid so much unrest over the ongoing conflict in the Gulf and Israel-Palestine – Amnesty say there are risks that protests could be repressed given that all three host countries have seen “restrictions on the right to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly”. The report refers to the Trump administration targeting foreign-born students protesting Israeli actions in Gaza, while US citizens “protesting and monitoring aggressive immigration enforcement actions have been killed by federal agents”Canada has meanwhile seen demonstrations about Gaza “unduly dispersed or cleared by the police”.Mexico has also experienced a series of World Cup-related protests by residents angry about the disruptions to water supplies, access to land, rising costs and gentrification linked to infrastructure development in host cities. Amnesty fear the “militarised nature of Mexico’s security mobilisation for the tournament brings risks that further protests could be repressed.”Mexico has seen protests in the days ahead of the World Cup (AFP/Getty)Marginalisation of the homelessIn Canada, the impact of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver and a growing housing crisis have raised Amnesty fears that people experiencing homelessness will again be displaced and pushed further to the margins. On 15 March, authorities in Toronto closed a winter warming centre providing shelter for people experiencing homelessness, as the venue had been pre-booked for use by Fifa. FairSquare have similarly expressed concern that the homeless could be cleared from venues in the US, for purposes of presentation. Or, another form of sportswashing. The environmental cost and related problemsA study by Greenly estimated that the greenhouse gas footprint of this World Cup is to be 7.8m tonnes of CO2. That would be 2.1 times more than Qatar, albeit without factoring in the immense infrastructure construction for 2022. The disparity is entirely driven by the sheer geographical scale of the tournament, and the fact it now features 48 teams. That issue is of course connected to concerns about Fifa’s protections of players and supporters from heat, all while promoting some of the world’s biggest polluters, right up to a commercial arrangement with a fossil fuel giant like Aramco. A World Weather Attribution analysis predicts that around a quarter of games will be played in conditions of 26-degree “Wet Bulb Globe Temperature” [WBGT] or higher – a heat index used by physiologists as the key measure of how effectively the body can cool itself. FairSquare describe Fifa’s heat risk mitigation as woefully inadequate, especially given the lack of published research on the issue. Last summer’s Club World Cup in the United States saw the heat cause a huge issue (Getty)As an illustration, FIFPRO and other experts advise that referees should intervene when the thermometers reach 26 degrees celsius and matches should be delayed or postponed at 28, whereas Fifa’s interventions only start at 32. A letter from scientists on the topic noted that the approach was “impossible to justify". Fifa is also criticised for not learning the lessons from Qatar where the same issues were potentially a factor in thousands of unexplained deaths of migrant workers. The great rip-offWith most ticket prices far more than treble the cost of recent tournaments, on top of the general expense of the United States, there are estimations that it will cost the average fan between $10,000 and $35,000 to follow their team right through the tournament. Fifa’s lopsided contracts with host cities has only escalated the expenses. The governing body has used all manner of arguments to defend this, from redistributing revenue around the game to having to adapt to US “entertainment culture”. Both are laughable since the revenue projections were to be record-breaking based on the old price model, and Fifa has never previously adapted to any local ticket culture – including USA 94. If they had, more South African locals might have been able to attend 2010...There is the admitted issue of how “touting” is now legal in the US market, but there were multiple workarounds for this, rather than Fifa fully indulging in it. What this really represents is the creation of two-tier football, shifting the World Cup from a mass-access global football event to a limited-access mega-event. That is all the more concerning since domestic football cultures have long been struggling to resist pushes for precisely this from club owners, and yet here are the notional safeguards of the game ushering it all through.High ticket prices for the World Cup have caused controversy (The Independent/Getty/iStock)An exclusionary World Cup, especially for fans with disabilitiesThe cost has contributed to another adverse consequence, that renders some more of Infanfino’s claims absurd. The Fifa president has been talking about the most inclusive World Cup ever, but the ticket market has already priced a lot of fans out. That goes way beyond local communities like MLS fans, too. Football Supporters Europe argue this is the first international sporting event in modern times effectively excluding fans with disabilities. The body currently have no data on wheelchair users travelling from Europe. FSE put this down to how there are no accessibility tickets among the cheapest Category 4 options, and no free access for companions, meaning following a team to the final could cost a fan in a wheelchair up to $7,000. Ronan Evain, of FSE, describes all of this – as well as absurd parking prices – as "a tax on disability".The sizeWhile the politically-driven expansion of the World Cup to 48 teams has ironically contributed to some Fifa headaches – not least more geopolitical issues as well as the environmental cost – it might also serve to corrode the competition’s spiritual value. More may well be less. The asymmetric system, where 48 doesn’t split cleanly to two, means the return of third-place qualifying. That offers more safety nets, reducing jeopardy, while potentially creating strange convolutions. It also shows Fifa – or, specifically, Infantino – don’t understand what actually made the four-team groups so enthralling in 2022. In other words, they don’t understand how their actual sport works. Even the mass of matches and teams starts to affect some of the self-contained nature of a World Cup, because it’s just too much to consume. That is exactly when the magic starts to evaporate. There might not be a more illustrative example of “the game eating itself”.The expansion to a 48-team World Cup has seen countries like Curacao qualify for the first time (AFP/Getty)The great sell-offAlmost above anything, and running through everything, is how so many of these issues represent a core issue with this World Cup and how it articulates the very devolution of the sport. It is Infantino’s Fifa continuing to sell off and change the game – and specifically a tournament that is a true global good – without anyone apparently able to object or do anything. How did we get here? Infantino is after all supposed to be serving the game, not the other way around. Perhaps it’s a grimly appropriate theme for a tournament that was supposed to fundamentally be about money, but is now about so much more.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 35 Visualizações 0 Anterior

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMRemember when Trump forgot the word for “Alzheimer’s” as he claimed he didn’t have it?Donald Trump had a fairly ironic – and perhaps telling – memory lapse. Talking with New York Magazine, Trump said that his father, Fred Trump, had no health problems except for one. Related Trump’s doctors are monitoring “the progress of his dementia and/or strokes,” psychologist says “He had one problem,” Trump said. “At a certain age, about 86, 87, he started getting, what do they call it?” According to the reporter, Ben Terris, Trump pointed to his forehead and looked towards White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt. “Alzheimer’s,” she said. “Like an Alzheimer’s thing,” Trump continued. “Well, I don’t have it.” Terris then asked Trump if Alzheimer’s is a topic that’s on his mind. “No, I don’t think about it at all. You know why?” he said. “Because whatever it is, my attitude is whatever.”Terris also talked to Trump’s clinical psychologist niece, Mary Trump, who described watching her grandfather – Donald Trump’s father – succumb to the disease. She said that the symptoms started slowly and then advanced quickly. “One of the first times I noticed it was at some event where he was being honored,” she said. “And I looked at him and saw this deer-in-the-headlights look, like he had no idea where he was.” She said that she sees the same thing happening to her uncle. “Sometimes it does not seem like he’s oriented to time and place,” she said. “And on occasion, I do see that deer-in-the-headlights look.”0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 35 Visualizações 0 Anterior -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COM'Slap Ben Stokes with a suspension': Former England legend on nightclub controversyEngland’s preparations for the second Test against New Zealand have been overshadowed by a fresh off-field controversy involving captain Ben Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson. The pair are reported to have broken the team curfew after England’s 115-run victory in the opening Test at Lord’s and later become involved in an altercation that allegedly escalated into a physical confrontation. The rugby player involved was identified by Britain’s Press Association as Totoa Auvaa, the former Samoa A and Samoa Under-20 captain, who stands 6ft 5in (1.95m) tall and weighs more than 124kg. The investigation into the incident has delayed England’s squad announcement for the second Test at The Oval and intensified scrutiny of Stokes’ leadership. The episode has also fuelled speculation about Stokes’ longer-term future. Recent reports have suggested the England all-rounder is reassessing his international career, with retirement among the possibilities being discussed.Boycott calls for suspension, not a fineFormer England captain Geoffrey Boycott said the ECB must act firmly if Stokes is found to have breached team rules, arguing that the captain should not receive special treatment because of his importance to the side.“The England and Wales Cricket Board has to make an example of Ben Stokes and slap him with a suspension after he was caught breaking the team’s curfew. You cannot have the captain blatantly breaking the rules and not do anything about it just because he is so important to the team,” Boycott wrote in his column for The Telegraph.Boycott also said the responsibility for dealing with the matter rests with England’s cricket leadership, while acknowledging that any final judgment on Stokes’ future should await the findings of the investigation.“If Rob Key, the England director of cricket, or Richard Gould, the ECB chief executive, are not up to the task of disciplining Stokes then they should not be in a job. I said before that Brendon McCullum and Key should have been sacked. Come on Rob and Brendon, what are you going to do about this? Whether Stokes should be sacked depends on the full circumstances of the incident. An investigation is ongoing and it has to get to the bottom of what happened before making that judgment call,” he added.Discipline and leadership under the spotlightIn Boycott’s view, the issue extends beyond a single night out and goes directly to standards within the England setup. He argued that a token financial penalty would send the wrong message and that any punishment must underline the captain’s responsibility to lead by example.“But that does not detract from the fact that Stokes as captain should be setting the tone. England cannot beat Australia next summer without discipline. And discipline applies off the field as well as on it. We don’t want a paltry fine. They earn so much money now that a few thousand quid means nothing to them. It is a suspension we need to see,” he wrote. With the ECB investigation still underway, no disciplinary outcome has yet been announced. Until that process concludes, uncertainty continues to hang over Stokes, Atkinson and England’s leadership ahead of the next Test.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 35 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMLobban leaves Scotland for Australia to chase Olympic dreamGreg Lobban has represented Scotland at three Commonwealth Games [Getty Images]Scotland's top men's squash player Greg Lobban says the lure of potentially playing at the Olympics hastened a planned move to apply for Australian citizenship, one he believes is "the best decision for me and my family."The world number 28 from Inverness recently gained permanent resident status down under and hopes the full switch will be completed by this time next year. With an Australian wife – former squash player Donna Lobban – family is a big factor, but so is the opportunity to play a part when the sport makes its Olympic debut in Los Angeles in two years time."I have got strong Australian ties with my wife being born here and my son being half Australian, so this was going to happen at some point," the 33-year-old told BBC Scotland."I was thinking it was probably going to be post-squash career in terms of applying for residency and citizenship but the prospect of representing Australia at the Olympic games is too much of an exciting opportunity to turn down."At this stage of my career, this is really motivation to put in a good two years and hopefully be able to have Australian representation at the Games. Only 16 males and 16 females will get an opportunity to compete at the first Olympic games for squash."Lobban has a doubles bronze medal for Scotland at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and 16 PSA titles to his name.Squash star who could have played football for ScotlandHis decision comes 25 years after another Scottish squash player, Peter Nicol, controversially switched allegiance to England."I can't thank Scottish Squash enough for the support they have given me over the past 18 years of my professional career," he said. "I had been worried about the reaction, they are maybe losing one of their top players and it would have been easy for them to kick up a little bit of a stink about it, but they have been fantastic."In terms of the Peter Nicol stuff, I wouldn't draw too many comparisons especially because of the rankings that we hold and the names, they are not comparable and I think maybe if I was number one and a world champion like Peter Nicol maybe there would have been more animosity."I was too young to know what was going when Peter did switch over but I would certainly have been one of those ones thinking 'oh why would you move when you are born here and you are really proud to be Scottish like I am?' But when the cards are on the table and you are doing the best thing for you or your family, I think 99% of the people would make the same decision."At present, there are six players eligible for Team GB above Lobban in the rankings, whereas he would comfortably be the highest placed Australian. He was ranked 21st in the world when making his choice and explained: "I felt, probably selfishly, I deserve a chance to qualify."I am predicting I would have to be ranked in the top 25 or 26 in the world by 2028, so this route is definitely not a sure thing but it is a motivation factor for me to be able to keep my ranking high enough to put in the work day in day out which is something I probably haven't had in the last few years."0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 35 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMLaura Sanko expects heavyweight Alex Pereira 'to look really good' at UFC White HouseLaura Sanko sees Alex Pereira creating another special moment at UFC Freedom 250.Pereira (13-3 MMA, 10-2 UFC) takes on Ciryl Gane (13-2 MMA, 10-2 UFC) for the interim heavyweight title in the June 14 co-main event at the White House in Washington DC (Paramount+). Pereira will look to claim a UFC belt in a third weight division after capturing both the middleweight and light heavyweight titles."There's so many unknowns about what Alex will look like at heavyweight," Sanko told MMA Junkie. "It seems to me, if there was ever a light heavyweight to apply his trade at heavyweight, it would be Alex Pereira. Against Ciryl Gane, though, he's not facing a guy who is just out there lumbering forward, slanging and banging. This is a guy who moves and hits really hard but at that same token is not known necessarily as a knockout artist in the heavyweight division, not like a guy like Derrick Lewis."Although many see wrestling as a major advantage for Gane, UFC analyst and color commentator Sanko isn't sure if it's going to predominantly be his game plan against Pereira."I think a lot of it is going to be footwork," Sanko said. "Neither of these guys is necessarily purely a knockout artist, which I know is crazy to say about Alex Pereira because he has so many finishes. But he's not just looking for the knockout, so I think we're going to see a little bit of a longer fight potentially between these two. There's definitely a huge probability for a finish."I'm not saying it's going to go to a decision, but I do see these two having a very intelligent kickboxing match for quite a while because they really start throwing with heat and bad intentions that could finish the fight. I'm interested to see if either, maybe Gane looks to grapple, I don't think he's going to be out there shooting double legs, but I could see him putting Alex up against the fence and try to make him wear his weight a little bit, make him tired. If I was a heavyweight, I would try to be as physical as possible with Alex Pereira."Ultimately, Sanko finds it hard to pick against Pereira, who has created several massive moments in a short amount of time in the UFC."I'm bold," Sanko concluded. "I actually feel like Alex is going to get it done. I think he's going to look really good at heavyweight, and we're going to see it early and that he's going to find his shot. I don't know if it will be the left hook or the head kick, or what it's going to be – but something feels kind of magical with him chasing this piece of history."This article originally appeared on MMA Junkie: UFC Freedom 250: Analyst likes Alex Pereira at heavyweight0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 35 Visualizações 0 Anterior
