I am not saying that she not be called out when she says things that are really cruel, wrong and mocking, Fry went on. She seems to be a lost cause for us.I disagree profoundly with her on this subject, he continued. I am angry she does not disavow some of the more revolting and truly horrible, violently destructive things that people say. She does not attack those at all. She says things that are inflammatory and contemptuous, mocking and add to a terribly distressing time for trans people.Rowling is reported to have a net worth of $1.2 billion and has put a large sum of her wealth into transphobic causes, such as donating 70,000 to For Women Scotland, a transphobic feminist group that had successfully lobbied to exclude legal recognition for trans people in the countrys Equality Act.In celebration of the ruling, Rowling posted a smug selfie of her sipping a drink and smoking a cigar. Her image caption read, I love it when a plan comes together. She has crowed at the success of legislation in Scotland and elsewhere, declaring things about gender. So I am very happy to go on the record to say that I am really angry about that, Fry declared. My view about all things of sharp and difficult nature is that it is much more important to be effective than to be right.Fry has been a long supporter of Rowling and has refused to break ties with her when she began facing backlash for her transphobic comments. In 2021, Fry previously stated, Shes a friend and will remain a friend.Other actors who have condemned Rowling include the main cast of the Harry Potter film series: Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint, who played the series protagonists, Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley, respectively. In Radcliffes initial statement through the Trevor Project he statesd, Transgender women are women and added, Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people.Trans people are who they say they are and deserve to live their lives without being constantly questioned, or told they arent who they say they are, Emma Watson said.Rupert Grint told the BBC, Trans women are women. Trans men are men. We should all be entitled to live with love and without judgment.Frys denouncement of Rowling also comes around a time when actor Tom Felton, known for playing antagonist Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter films, voiced his support for Rowling. He told Variety that he was not attuned to trans debate but remained incredibly grateful to the author. He has faced public backlash for his comment.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.
