What is a twunk? The post-twink terminology, explained
From twinks to daddies, otters to bears, queer slang has a descriptor for just about every type of gay man you could imagine. Some of these can apply for all, or most, of a man's adult life, whereas others tend to have a natural starting or stopping point. So what happens when a twink is no longer a twink? Enter the twunk. What is a twunk? (@) To understand twunks, one must first understand twinks. A twink, for the rare reader who may not be familiar with the term, is generally a slender, young gay man with little-to-no facial or body hair. Some have used it in recent years to describe men who match the physical characteristics but are straight or haven't publicly shared their sexuality. But in its most accurate form, it does refer to queer men though some non-binary folks embrace the label, too.A twunk is what happens when that twink either bulks up a bit, ages out of the 1825 range (or 18-29, depending on who you ask), or both. They still read as youthful, still lean on the slender and smoother side (hairless chests reign supreme), but theyve added some muscle masswhether from a serious workout routine or just the natural arc of getting older. The "twink" descriptor is still visible, but its no longer the full story.Where does 'twunk' come from? from askgaybrosAs one might assume, the word "twunk" comes from a portmanteau of "twink" and "hunk." The precise origins of this slang are unknown, but it's been around for some time. What is 'twink death?' (@) The concept of twink death is sometimes used alongside twunk or other descriptors. Essentially, it just means that a former twink has shed or outgrown his old physique and graduated on to being a twunk, a DILF, or something else entirely. It's a tongue-in-cheek way of mourning the twink that once was, ahead of embracing their newly transformed self.Is 'twunk' a slur? (@) Twunk is not a slur.Any word can be used in a pejorative way, especially by people out to attack the LGBTQ+ community. The word twink has certainly been lobbed at young gay men in a negative fashion many times, prompting tons of debate over the years as to whether it should be used at all. As a subcategory of twink, twunk likely faces some of the same scrutiny. But at its core, twunk is just another word queer people use to describe themselves and others within the community. If someone doesnt want to be called a twunk, thats valid. But broadly speaking, its fair game.
