Police hunt for 3-man mob who viciously attacked a trans woman & left her for dead
D.C. police are hunting for three men who shouted anti-trans slurs before attacking Cayla Calhoun, a 43-year-old transgender woman, on June 29. The attack left Calhoun with a concussion and broke her ribs, elbow, femur, palate, a vertebra, and multiple fractures around her eye socket. She blames right-wing anti-trans rhetoric for motivating her attackers.Calhoun left her job at Annabelle restaurant around midnight while wearing a skirt and a rainbow pin and riding her Onewheel motorized skateboard. While travelling, three other men on motorized scooters encountered her on the street, began shouting transphobic slurs, and then shoved her off her vehicle, she told Advocate. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Emergency medical responders found her lying near a curb around 6 a.m. local time and transported her to George Washington University Hospital. Her bloodied skirt had been shredded, and hospital workers threw away her personal belongings, possibly mistaking her for a homeless person.[My] fine motor skills are horrible, she told Advocate. Its not an accident that were seeing a rise in violence against transgender humans. Its part of a right-wing plan, Calhoun said, blaming Republican anti-trans rhetoric for inspiring her attackers. She exudes warmth, empathy, passion, and joy in all that she does. Her spirit remains unbreakableeven in the face of unimaginable cruelty and pain. Though her attackers tried to crush her body, they could not crush her spirit.In a statement, D.C. Deputy Mayor for Public Safety and Justice Lindsey Appiah said, There is nothing more important than our continued efforts to drive down crime and make our city safer for all of our residents and visitors.
