Drunk bigot assaults lesbian couple outside casino in birthday celebration gone wrong
William Wilson, a 26-year-old Texas man, has been charged with hate crimes for allegedly attacking two same-sex couples waiting for their valet-parked vehicle outside of the MGM Casino in Detroit, Michigan. Wilson allegedly punched one woman, continuing even after she lost consciousness, before he tried fleeing the scene.The attack occurred on July 13 around 1 a.m. local time against a 29-year-old married female couple as well as a 30-year-old man and his 27-year-old partner. Chelsi Way said that she, her wife, her gay brother, and his partner were finishing a birthday celebration when Wilson and his accomplice drunkenly and aggressively approached Way and her wife outside of the casino after seeing the women and the male same-sex couple holding hands. Wilson allegedly put his arms around the female couple and recorded their interaction on his phone while he also shouted anti-gay slurs. Zac Chearhart, one of the male same-sex partners, said that he then went inside the casino and asked security officers for assistance before Wilson attacked them, but the officers ignored him. Everything kind of escalated at that point when he started shouting slurs at me about my gender, and like, what I identify as is when it became like a really big problem. He had struck [my wife], Way continued. She fell to the ground. She tried to get back up, and then thats when he knocked her out, and she was unconscious for five minutes. You could see her eyes wide open, and she fell face-first onto the concrete. After she was knocked out, he hit her three to four more times.Wilson and his accomplice allegedly fled the scene. But Way followed them for three miles and called police before Wilsons arrest. Wilson has since been charged with hate crimes and assault, but his accomplice hasnt been located.Wilson has been charged with assault with intent to do great bodily harm, two counts of assault and battery, aggrevated assault, and hate crime charges. He could face 10 years in prison or more, The Detroit Free Press reported. Ways wife suffered a concussion and has since received 20 stitches for her injuries. She also said she has been having trouble with her memory and difficulty sleeping, following the attack.We just wanted a safe, fun night together.
