Rainbow crosswalk honoring Pulse victims vandalized for the third time
A Pride-themed intersection was defaced for the third time when a driver in a black pickup truck intentionally left tire marks across the rainbow crosswalks. The intersection, located in Delray Beach, Florida, was unveiled in 2021 and dedicated to the victims of the Pulse nightclub shooting. The Palm Beach County Human Rights Council (PBCHRC), not the taxpayers, paid for the project. After taking a hard right away from the scene, it returns for a second go. The driver appears to be a man in glasses. Police are asking anyone who recognizes him to call 1-888-441-8477. A month after the crosswalks unveiling in 2021, 19-year-old Alexander Jerich also did a burnout with his truck to deliberately leave black marks on the rainbow street art. The truck was driving as part of a convoy celebrating the birthday of the current president.A court ordered Jerich to write a 25-page essay about the 2016 Pulse shooting but declined to pursue a felony criminal mischief charge against Jerich for fear that it would make it harder for him to find a job. During the trial,Jerich cried as his father discussed what a disappointment he is. Local LGBTQ+ organizations refused to let Jerich work with them, even though the judge thought it would help him learn more about the queer community.Jerich was sentenced to two years probation, 100 hours of community service, and a mental health screening for his crime.A few years later, Dylan Reese Brewer, a white male 19-year-old and registered Republican voter, pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges of criminal mischief and reckless driving causing injury to property or person after using his Dodge Ram truck to do burnouts on the crosswalks. At the time of the incident, he drove with two passengers while flying a large flag bearing the presidents name. Judge Daliah Weiss suspended Brewers drivers license for one year, sentenced him to 12 months of probation, and ordered him to attend anger management classes. He was also ordered to perform 75 hours of community service and pay thousands of dollars in court fines and costs and $5698.71 in restitution to the City of Delray Beach.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.
