New online trend features women in drag lip syncing to 'Hamilton'
10 years later, Hamilton is still proving that it was never just a phase. The Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning musical recently celebrated its 10th anniversary, and a new trend on social media proves that this beloved musical created by Lin-Manuel Miranda is always top of mind for real Hamilfans, and they will always commit to the bit.In this new TikTok trend, users are painting on a goatee on their faces and dressing up in traditional colonial men's clothing as they lip-sync to an exchange between Alexander Hamilton and his wife, Eliza, in "Best of Wives and Best of Women." These TikTokers, usually women, are dragged-up in Lin-Manuel Miranda realness and acting out as the character trying to leave the house sneakily, getting caught by Eliza, and getting annoyed. @actressbecc a trend i can get behind @sydwingold Alexander come back to sleep For those who haven't seen the show, the musical details the pivotal moments in Hamilton's life and also explores the infidelities in his marriage. The song comes towards the end of the show, as he tries to leave in the middle of the night to go to his duel with Aaron Burr, where (spoiler alert), he dies. He wakes Eliza, and she asks him to come back to bed, but he says he has an early morning and says his meeting is at dawn.As with any online trend, it's difficult to pinpoint who exactly started it. However, one user known as @actuallyhamilt0n on TikTok, posted an early video of themself doing this trend climbing out of a window on July 22. That original video accumulated over nine million views and over one million likes. @actuallyhamilt0n #bestofwivesandbestofwomen #hamilton #hamiltonmusical #foryoupage #linmanuelmiranda #alexanderhamilton #fyp The bits only got more and more creative. One person used a Ring camera to record the interaction, making the exchange that much funnier. @makingartandtakingnaps Eliza catches Alexander on the ring camera #fyp #foryou #foryoupage #hamilton #alexanderhamilton #hamiltontrend #trending #viral #trend #hamiltonmusical A lot of people are taking this trend very seriously, but some aren't able to hold their composure. @drewafualo made myself audibly laugh filming this Ill be honest w yall Miranda, the musical's creator and original star, joined in on the fun and did the trend with his recently unveiled wax figure. @hamiltonmusical Best of wax and best of figures. The trend seems to have stemmed from all the renewed attention on the show after the 10th anniversary celebration. When it came out, the musical was a global phenomenon (and still is). So much so that at this year's Tony Awards, the original Broadway cast reunited on stage for a medley performance for the first time in years. Miranda, Leslie Odom Jr., Jonathan Groff, Phillipa Soo, Okieriete Onaodowan, Jasmine Cephas Jones, Rene Elise Goldsberry, Christopher Jackson, Daveed Diggs, and Anthony Ramos all showed up to reprise their roles one last time, and the proshot is going to be released in theaters on September 5.
