Nature, Published online: 13 August 2025; doi:10.1038/d41586-025-02539-1A humidity index has been developed that considers lateral flow along rivers and groundwater systems, as well as precipitation, potential evaporation and plant transpiration. It performs better than a conventional humidity index when describing water availability for ecosystems and societies in arid regions.
