On Sunday, the President of the United States will sit out on the White House lawn and watch a UFC event that's been in the works for nearly a year, ever since he first suggested it late last summer. The fists will fly. The blood will probably flow. And through it all Donald Trump will be sitting there, outdoors, possibly for several hours.He will do this just seven weeks after the attempted attack at the White House correspondents' dinner in April. He will do it while the United States is still engaged in military action against Iran. He will do it just six days after his journey to an NBA Finals game at Madison Square Garden caused whole sections of Midtown Manhattan to be essentially shut down, with attendees at the game subject to intense security screenings that clogged the streets for blocks.With all that in mind it seems reasonable to wonder, just how safe is UFC Freedom 250 for all concerned, from Trump to the fighters themselves?After all, a lengthy outdoor event featuring the U.S. President and likely some members of his cabinet could be a prime target for those wishing to harm this administration. It would also seem to carry different risks than Trump's many appearances at UFC events held in enclosed arenas with more tightly controlled environments.According to Charles Marino, a former Supervisory Special Agent in the United States Secret Service who now serves as CEO of the security company Sentinel, the potential risks at an event like this are plentiful. The drones were later recovered, but the potential damage that could be done by those or other similar drones falling into the wrong hands is a major concern."If you can imagine a large tank of chemicals, maybe ricin or some biological agent, being dispersed over a wide area, that's serious," Martinez says. "The fact that [the Department of Homeland Security] and other law enforcement assets were able to recover those is a huge bonus, but I revert to the bigger question of who are the entities that are seeking these out? Who's actually interested in employing these? Those are all the threats that come into play. It's not hard to weaponize a drone, contrary to what a lot of manufacturers claim. It's actually relatively simple. It's being done on a daily basis in Ukraine, the Middle East, even domestically by novices or those just seeking a challenge."ufcBut drones will also be part of the security arsenal for the Secret Service and other agencies, Martinez notes. Some will likely be equipped with facial recognition technology for spotting specific threats, while others could be used to counter any non-approved drones while tracking the signal to find the drone operator.All these threats are already a prime concern for this year's World Cup, says Ron Hawkins, senior director of industry relations for the Security Industry Association. But what complicates matters for Sunday's event, he notes, is the multiple different government agencies who will be coordinating security at both the White House and the UFC watch party for fans at The Ellipse, a 52-acre park located just south of the White House grounds.Those two events combine the risks associated with high-value targets such as government officials, but also those that come along with large groups."That puts it on a level with a Super Bowl or World Cup, maybe even higher," Hawkins says. "You're looking at maybe 85,000 or 90,000 people in the vicinity of the White House, with other national leaders. … You're controlling access. You're surveilling and maintaining situational awareness and communicating threats. In today's technological world, underlying all that is going to be the network, the cyber connections. If cyber can be breached, then physical can be breached. And if physical can be breached, then cyber can be breached."As with any event involving the president, there's also the chance of large-scale protests complicating the security picture. Michael McCann, a 23-year veteran of the New York Police Department with experience coordinating multiple protection operations for foreign dignitaries, points to the extended barriers erected in a wide perimeter around Madison Square Garden ahead of President Trump's visit to the arena earlier this week. Measures like that will almost certainly be in place Sunday, he says, since much of the focus will be on controlling who has access on or near the grounds."The most stressful part of this kind of event is really the outside, the outer perimeter," says McCann, now the vice president of McCann Protective Services. "Because unfortunately, no matter which political party is doing the protesting, you'll have large numbers and groups trying to infiltrate and get into the site. At [Madison Square Garden], the Secret Service deployed what's called anti-scaling fencing around the Garden, which we've never really used before. But it's because they've had these huge groups of people outside the Garden for these games, and you'd expect something similar [at the UFC event]."But for Marino, this highlights another big difference between having this event at the White House and having Trump attend a more traditional sports venue as a visiting guest. Not only does it give an added advantage to the Secret Service, which knows the White House grounds better than any other place on Earth, he says, it also limits the disruption to others."Something like this is generally less inconvenient to the public," Marino says. "In New York, they had to cancel watch parties outside because of the extended perimeter. You had expansive motorcade routes getting to and from the venue, which closed down streets and snarled traffic. So there are a lot of positive points to this that I think people should keep in mind."At the same time, he points out, Washington residents who are looking to avoid a crowd might want to steer clear of the area on Sunday. Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, or thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God. Webbon’s co-host claims, “Paul is making the point of is that the man who is a feminine, although not himself, literally gay, literally homosexual, literally taking, participating in illicit acts, but still effeminate in his mannerisms, his dress, his habits, his customs, that that man, and this is the strongest words that Paul uses, will not inherit the kingdom of heaven.” The co-host then claims that gay men have life expectancies that are 30 years less than those of heterosexual men, although he provides no evidence to back up his claim. They also claim that feminine men will use “blandishments of speech, by lightness of gesture and apparel, and other allurements,” including “soft, people-pleasing, effeminate, feminine sensibility speech,” characteristics which Webbon and his co-host attribute to certain politicians as well as pastors who want to reach female audiences. The men generally blame “a full embrace of feminism” for the existence of “more effeminate men in every single arena of our culture today.” “We flatter women in the way that we exalt and esteem, and raise women to a status of superiority,” one of Webbon’s co-hosts says. “Because we worship women, we idolize women, we have to castrate men.” “A man who is physically soft, who dresses soft, who speaks soft, who’s indecisive, soft in his decision making, soft in his work ethic, you’re not just talking about an effeminate man at that point — you’re talking about a bad man, he’s a bad man,” Webbon says. “He’s undisciplined, he’s not courageous, he’s not strong, he’s not zealous for the things of God. He’s not a protector. You’ve got to be strong, hard to kill, to be a protector.” “This man, who dresses a certain way, and his little light in the loafers, and a little limp in his wrist, and a little lisp in his speech, he’s a spiritual f**got, and it’s indicative of who he actually is on the inside,” Webbon continues. “He is disobedient to the Lord. The total prize money will be $85.8 million, which the grass-court tourney described in its Thursday news release as "by far the biggest annual increase in the history of the event."That said, as reported by The Athletic, the prize pool still falls short of the revenue percentage several tennis players are looking for from the Grand Slams. The players have been pushing for their earnings to make up 22% of Grand Slam prize money, a share that’s akin to what they garner in joint ATP and WTA Tour events.But the $85.8 million Wimbledon is allocating to its players this year reportedly amounts to only 15.1% of the tournament’s 2025 revenue. For reference, per The Athletic, last year’s prize pool was $72.7 million, and that accounted for 13% of Wimbledon’s 2024 revenue.So both the prize money and the revenue split is going up at the major, but the latter still doesn’t yield the share players desire at Grand Slams.“I would hope the players would welcome it. It’s a significant amount of money,” All England Club chair Deborah Jevans said at a news conference, according to The Associated Press.“We’ve demonstrated that we’ve looked at every round, including qualifying. My hope is that the players do recognize what a significant increase that this is.”Players who bow out of the first round at Wimbledon this year will come away with $107,000, a 21% increase according to the tournament, which also revealed that its qualifying rounds are experiencing a 25% bump in prize money.The players’ media protest at the French Open saw a group of tennis stars — including Jannik Sinner, Aryna Sabalenka, Coco Gauff and Iga Świątek — make themselves available for just 15 minutes during the customary pre-tournament media day at Roland-Garros. That 15 minutes represented the 15% of revenue, on average, Grand Slams dedicate to prize money, as previously reported by The Guardian.But the protest didn’t bleed into the tournament in Paris after a reportedly encouraging meeting between player representative Larry Scott, a group of player agents and French Tennis Federation officials.As the tournament at Roland-Garros wore on, additional meetings took place, including talks with Jevans, who, per the AP, said the players via Scott angled for a pot of $95 million at this year’s Wimbledon.It’s important to note, though, that Wimbledon has a profit-share agreement with the the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA). The LTA is Britain’s governing body for tennis and padel, and it strives to enhance sport participation, court renovation and player development, in addition to piloting other grass-court tournaments. It’s granted 90% of Wimbledon’s annual financial surplus.“Using revenue to determine prize money, it makes no sense,” Jevans said Thursday, according to The Athletic.“We have said that to Larry Scott. Revenue does not take into account the investment that we give. And as I’ve spoken about, we’re not for profit, we’re very different to a 1000 event (tournaments the level below Grand Slams). Everything goes back in the sport. Rucker attended Gonzaga University out of high school, pitching well for the Bellingham Bells for two summers before transferring to Brigham Young University for two more strong seasons. Selected in the 11th round by the Chicago Cubs in the 2016 draft, Rucker debuted in 2021 with the Cubbies. He’s since bounced around, working in a bullpen role for a 4.96/4.51 ERA/FIP in 123 innings across 96 games. Injuries waylaid his 2025, but he’s been solid with the Rainiers. His 1.93/3.95 ERA/FIP in 22 games is impressive in the Pacific Coast League, but he’ll be expected most likely to cover some innings in the next day or two for a short-handed M’s pitching staff.González had about as rough of a call-up as Nick Davila’s had a dreamy one. That’s what shows up on his football card, but it doesn’t completely describe what he plays. Cross plays all over the place. A detailed look at his 2025 snap counts, confirms that, with action coming at both safety spots, playing deep and in the box. He lined up as a slot cornerback and on the outside. There was also some positioning as a linebacker in certain alignments, showing how his versatility can be an asset. His box alignments were third-highest for a defensive back in the NFL last season. Expect more of the same in his first year with the Commanders. “Put on the tape,” Cross said in a press conference following Tuesday’s OTA session. “In Indy I played everything. Here I play everything. I can do literally anything on the field. I take pride and joy in that, knowing I can play anywhere in the back seven and make an impact.” His biggest impact comes in run defense, and Cross will play an important role for Washington in that area, being active closer to the line of scrimmage. “I pride myself on the work put in during the offseason work to get stronger, to get faster and to know my keys and responsibilities.” Cross said. “At the end of the day, run defense is just about opposing your will on the man across from you. Whether it’s a lineman, tight end or receiver, your job is to beat him and go make a play. If you when your one-on-ones more than he wins his, it’s going to be a pretty good day for you.” Cross had lots of good days in Indianapolis last year, before signing a two-year deal with the Commanders this spring. He had 46 stops in 2025, per NFL Next Gen Stats, that results in a negative EPA play for the offense. That was fifth-most among defensive backs. While he’ll continue to be active in those areas, the Commanders are experimenting with how to play him during the offseason program, and head coach Dan Quinn believes he could be more of an asset playing deep than some people think. “There is a really physical style of box style of play to him,” Quinn said in his Tuesday press conference. “He’s got more speed maybe than even I thought, you know, playing in the deep part of the fields. And so, by the week, like our first week we played almost all middle field coverages where we were featuring guys high and low the last week. “It’s been more of the two-high spaces. So, we’re also experimenting and learning what each of the guys can do. It will be their first World Cup appearance in 16 years, and, as you could see by the fireworks and the sea of red and white, it means everything to the Paraguayan people.The passion, excitement, and pride around the national team are clear to see. Qualifying for the World Cup for the first time in 16 years is something that has brought a country together.Paraguay is a country that I have grown to love since 2019, which has involved several trips related to the country, meeting new and exciting people, all stemming from playing a simple game of Football Manager that led me on a journey thousands of miles away from my home in Halifax. It is a journey that has helped me build a relationship with a country that I never imagined I would have.Discovering ParaguayMy journey with Paraguay actually began subconsciously without me even realising it. Back in 2006, England played Paraguay in the World Cup. It was the first proper World Cup match that I can remember watching, and I remember how frustrating it was watching England try to break them down. Despite taking an early 1-0 lead, England struggled to create chances against a stubborn Paraguayan side that refused to give anything away.Fast forward four years, and Paraguay were making headlines again at the 2010 World Cup. This time, they reached the quarter-finals, stunning many along the way and coming within touching distance of eliminating Spain. By that stage, England were already out of the tournament, and I found myself hoping Paraguay could cause an upset. There is always something appealing about an underdog story, and it would have been nice to see them go one step further and reach the semi-finals.In 2019, I began football writing and decided to target South American football. Having watched and fallen in love with South American football, one country I decided to focus on was Paraguay. The reason for this was that Paraguay always seemed to be a country that went under the radar compared to some of the continent’s bigger nations.I then came across football journalist Roberto Rojas and got in contact with him. Since then, we have remained friends. It originally started because I wanted to speak to somebody about Paraguay and their preparation for the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.I was also put in touch with someone very similar to myself, Ralph Hannah, better known as “Paraguayan Ralph”. Ralph is an Englishman who, through his own visits to the country, fell in love with Paraguay and its football culture. He has an encyclopaedic knowledge of the country and its game, and has since gone on to form the Guaraní Vision podcast alongside Roberto, covering Paraguayan football in depth.Ralph is another person I have got on really well with. As he is an Arsenal fan, we always have a laugh and a joke whenever we speak. More often than not, those conversations end up turning towards Paraguayan football, its players and the unique stories that surround the game in the country.During lockdown, Paraguay actually played quite a big role in my writing. Through covering the country, I managed to interview a couple of Paraguayan footballers, including Jorge Morel, and Matías Villasanti, who has since gone on to become an important player for both Paraguay and his club side, Grêmio.Leo, a Paraguayan guy based in London, whom I came into contact with over football, would become a mate and someone who sent me some Empanadas to try, and they were perfect. I haven’t had the chance to meet up with Leo in person yet, but when we do, I’m sure it will be a great laugh! He has helped me conduct some of the interviews I have put out on WFI.I also had the opportunity to tell the story of Sergio Orteman and how he helped lift Club Olimpia to their third Copa Libertadores title in 2002.What started as a simple interest in Paraguayan football was now giving me the opportunity to speak to players, hear their stories, and learn more about a country and football culture that I had become increasingly invested in.Lockdown was a difficult time for everyone, but thanks to football and writing, it helped keep me away from boredom.I managed to cover the story of Atlético Tembetary, a club ambitious about reaching the top flight of Paraguayan football, something they eventually achieved in 2025. I caught up with the owner and spoke about the club, their ambitions and the work they did during COVID to help provide food for families in need.Through this, I was in contact with a guy called Daniel and another called Ricardo. Little did I know that, through a mate in Halifax, I would end up meeting Ricardo by chance for a pre-match pint at Anfield in late 2023. What started as a one-off meeting soon became a regular occurrence. It was a bizarre situation, discovering that my friend and I both knew the same person without ever realising it. Ricardo is a huge Liverpool fan and, whenever he is in England, spends most of his time following the Reds home and away, including on European nights.As well as this, I was speaking to another friend, Jose Lezcano, whom I have gotten to know over the years, José Lescano, who works with Olimpia. Through him, I helped break the news of Emmanuel Adebayor’s move to Club Olimpia.Like most Paraguayans I know, he is a good guy and took me to a basketball game in the country, which was another great experience. At the same time, I was tracking Paraguay’s results and following them during World Cup qualifying and Olympic qualifying.My First Trip To ParaguayIn 2022, I finally got the chance to visit the country that I had been planning to go to during lockdown, and it was better than I probably could have imagined.I enjoyed the people, the food, and the asado. The smell of asado on a Sunday, travelling from Villa Morra to San Lorenzo, was absolutely fantastic. The people were so friendly and welcoming, it was unbelievable.I also got my first taste of Paraguayan football as I watched Cerro Porteño defeat Resistencia 1-0. I was actually invited to do a tour of the stadium and got to stand on the pitch thanks to a friend who was working there at the time.My experience of that first match was quite funny, actually. I went with a friend whom I had known for years. She had never really been to a football match before, but somehow we ended up in the crazy section of the Cerro Porteño supporters rather than the much more mellow stands.It was an experience in itself. It was enjoyable. It was crazy. It was probably the closest thing to experiencing what it is like to be a true Cerro Porteño supporter, going week in and week out.One thing I quickly noticed about Paraguayans was how much football means to them. They always mention their World Cups. They always mention the 2010 team. They are incredibly proud of what that group achieved and how close they came to reaching the semi-finals.I had a real experience of the Paraguayan Superclasico in 2023 when I met up with Roberto Rojas for the first time in person. He was with his cousin, Milton, who would also become a close friend of mine. We watched the game at a packed General Pablo Rojas Stadium as the match finished 2-2. The game featured a screamer late on as Olimpia equalised, with Hugo Quintana smashing the ball into the back of the net. It was another fantastic experience and the first time I got to experience fireworks left, right and centre.It was just crazy. It was nonstop. But it was Paraguay.In the same year, I got the chance to watch Libertad play. They were playing their home games at the Estadio La Huerta, a small stadium that I really enjoyed visiting.It is not the biggest ground and, in some ways, it feels tucked away amongst the streets of Asunción, but it is a nice stadium and one that I enjoyed experiencing.I also got to watch Enzo González, who has since moved to Wolves, and Alexander Barboza, who has since gone on to become a hero in South America after winning the Copa Libertadores and league title with Botafogo.Of course, on the bench was veteran striker Roque Santa Cruz, one of the most recognisable names in Paraguayan football. He came on for the final ten minutesLibertad went on to win the game 2-1.I also got the chance to travel to Ciudad del Este and, throughout the journey, I was fascinated by all the different Paraguayan cities and towns that I got to see. Up until that point, most of my experiences had been centred around Asunción, so it was nice to explore other parts of the country and get a better understanding of Paraguay beyond the capital.Along the way, I passed through Caaguazú, the city where Brighton striker Julio Enciso was born. The city is known for its wood industry and manufacturing, and it was interesting to visit a place that had produced one of Paraguay’s brightest footballing talents.Travelling across Paraguay gave me a different perspective on the country. It allowed me to see more of the places, people, and communities that make Paraguay what it is, rather than just experiencing life in Asunción.Following Paraguay’s Journey Back to the World CupTravelling around Paraguay, whenever people realised I was English, they would always tell me about the 2006 and 2010 World Cups that they remembered. Those tournaments still mean a lot to the country, and the conversations would often turn to whether Paraguay could one day get back to those heights again.At the time, it was all gearing up towards another World Cup qualification campaign, with the hope that Paraguay could finally return to football’s biggest stage once again.Their World Cup qualifying campaign did not get off to the greatest of starts and ultimately led to the dismissal of Daniel Garnero following a winless Copa América in 2024.This led to Gustavo Alfaro taking charge and working what can only be described as miracles with the Paraguay national team.What was always known about Paraguay was that they had a good core of players. After all, they had qualified for the Olympics for the first time in years, and there was plenty of talent coming through.I got to experience that first hand in Bordeaux when I travelled to watch Paraguay take on Japan at the Olympic Games. There I met Fabio, Roberto, and many other Paraguayans who had travelled thousands of miles to support their national team. Outside the stadium, there was already a large group of Paraguayans gathered together, singing, chanting and cheering on the players as they arrived for the match. It was a crazy atmosphere and a fantastic experience. Considering how far Paraguay is from France, it was unbelievable to see so many supporters there.The match itself did not go to plan. Paraguay suffered a 5-0 defeat after an early red card, but that did not stop them from competing in the tournament. They bounced back impressively and eventually reached the quarter-finals, narrowly missing out on a place in the semi-finals after suffering a penalty shootout defeat to Egypt.Even in defeat, it showed the character of Paraguayan football. Things do not always go their way, but they never stop competing.Football, Friendship, and AsadoI managed to catch up with some friends in 2024, Milton and Juanjo, for an asado and a few beers, a typical Paraguayan weekend.It was a great evening as we reminisced about football, World Cups, and some of our experiences following Paraguay over the years. Naturally, the conversation turned to 2010, a tournament that still means so much to Paraguayans. I even got to have a kick about myself on the local court in San Lorenzo.Milton told me stories about the atmosphere in the country during that World Cup and just how crazy things became as Paraguay progressed through the tournament. He spoke about the excitement, the celebrations, and the belief that swept across the country as they reached the quarter-finals for the first time in their history.Like many Paraguayans, he could remember exactly where he was during those matches. It was clear that, even all these years later, the memories of South Africa 2010 remain as strong as ever.After an afternoon that began with drinking beer in a Shell petrol station garage and watching Liverpool run out 1-0 winners over Girona, he told me the story of how key striker Salvador Cabañas missed the 2010 World Cup after being shot in the head following an altercation in Mexico. Cabañas was expected to be one of Paraguay’s most important players and a key part of their World Cup ambitions. Instead, events took a dark turn, and he was forced to miss the tournament. Remarkably, he survived and still lives to tell the tale.As Milton spoke about him, it was easy to understand just how highly regarded Cabañas was in Paraguay. He talked about his goals, his quality, and the impact he had on the national team. Even years later, there was still a sense of wonder when discussing just how good he was and what Paraguay may have achieved had he been available in South Africa.Those conversations also took place at an interesting time for Paraguayan football. Gustavo Alfaro had recently taken charge of the national team, and there was a growing belief that Paraguay could finally return to the World Cup after years of disappointment.Alfaro’s first game in charge of Paraguay saw them travel to Uruguay, where they earned a solid point away from home thanks to a disciplined defensive performance. It was not the most glamorous result, but it felt like the start of something.That feeling only grew a few days later when Paraguay defeated Brazil 1-0 in Asunción, with Diego Gómez scoring the only goal of the match. Suddenly, belief was starting to return.A goalless draw away to Ecuador followed before a 2-1 victory over Venezuela further boosted hopes that World Cup qualification could become a reality. Then came one of the standout moments of the campaign as Antonio Sanabria and Omar Alderete scored in a famous 2-1 victory over the world champions, Argentina.A draw at altitude in Bolivia showed once again that Paraguay meant business. They were no longer just difficult to beat; they were becoming genuine contenders for a World Cup place. That was further confirmed when they defeated Chile 1-0 in Asunción, extending what had become a remarkable run under Alfaro.What had looked like another disappointing qualifying campaign had been completely transformed. Alfaro had given Paraguay belief, organisation, and an identity. The country could finally start dreaming about returning to the World Cup.Paraguay needed just a point against Ecuador to secure qualification for their first FIFA World Cup since 2010. They did exactly that, earning a 0-0 draw and sparking wild celebrations in Asunción and across the country.The return to football’s biggest stage meant everything to the Paraguayan people. For a generation of supporters, this was the moment they had been waiting 16 years for. The wait was finally over.The celebrations that followed showed just how much football means in Paraguay. It is more than just a game. It is part of the country’s identity. The scenes in the streets, the fireworks, the flags, and the celebrations across the nation were a reminder of what qualification meant to a country that had spent so long dreaming of returning to the World Cup. It even sparked a national holiday the following day.In the country of chipa and sopa paraguaya, the World Cup was finally coming back.I returned to Paraguay once again in late 2025 to cover the Copa Sudamericana final between Athletico Mineiro and Lanús, and what a crazy atmosphere it was. The Lanús fans were unbelievable, bringing colour, noise and passion wherever they went. I also got the chance to meet up with Milton and Juanjo again. This time, we spent part of the weekend playing old FIFA games and using teams such as Wigan Athletic and Blackburn Rovers, who at the time featured Roque Santa Cruz.It showed me that no matter where you are in the world, football remains a huge part of people’s lives. Turning down an asado, a few beers, some time in the pool, and a bit of FIFA was never really an option.I got the chance to see a live popular Paraguayan band, Kchiporros, at the Sudamericana fan park, and it was a great spectacle featuring good live music, a wild crowd, street food, and of course, a fireworks display. Even after leaving Paraguay in 2025, the country still seemed to find me.Ahead of covering the Copa Libertadores final between Flamengo and Palmeiras in Lima, Peru, I once again found myself surrounded by Paraguayans. A friend of mine, Fabio, whom I had originally met in Bordeaux and later linked up with again at the 2024 Copa Libertadores final, was also in Lima for the occasion.After the match, Fabio invited me to an asado with a group of Paraguayans and a local family. Among them was someone who worked for Amstel Paraguay, and from the moment I arrived, I was welcomed with open arms.We shared food, a few beers and plenty of football conversation. Later that evening, we headed out together, and the hospitality shown to me was incredible. The group insisted on looking after me, a gesture that perfectly summed up the generosity I have encountered time and time again from Paraguayan people. Wherever I have travelled, whether in Paraguay itself or elsewhere in South America, I have always found them to be warm, welcoming, and eager to make you feel part of the group.Thankfully, I was able to return the favour the following day with a few drinks at a hotel bar in Lima.Over the next three days, we met up several times, sharing more beers, stories, and football conversations. Naturally, the upcoming World Cup was a frequent topic. We all hoped that England and Paraguay might be drawn together, simply because it would have made for a brilliant occasion and given us another excuse to meet up.That scenario never materialised, but the friendships remain. I have stayed in touch with the group, and I know that the next time I find myself in Paraguay, there will be even more friends waiting to share a beer, talk football, and enjoy an asado.And, after all, there is never a bad time for an asado.Everything in Paraguay always seemed relaxed until it came to football, which tends to be the case throughout much of South America.In the blistering heat, we spoke about Paraguay and their return to the World Cup. For the first time in 16 years, they were heading back to football’s biggest stage. You could sense the excitement every time the topic came up. This was a generation of supporters who had waited years for this moment.They now finally get to live those memories again.And as somebody who has followed Paraguay since 2019, travelled across the country and shared countless conversations with friends about football, I can completely understand why it means so much.And now we fast forward to June 2026, just days before the World Cup begins and Paraguay start their campaign against the United States.Looking AheadAlthough I am English, I will be keeping a close eye on Paraguay, something I have done for the last seven years or so.After seeing the scenes as the squad made their way to the airport and the atmosphere before the game against Nicaragua, where the fireworks, flags, and passion of Paraguay were on full display, it is impossible not to be excited for what lies ahead.I cannot wait to see how they get on.More than anything, I hope the players, supporters, and the country enjoy every moment of it. They have waited 16 years to return to the World Cup stage, and after everything they have been through to get there, they deserve their moment.Who knows what will happen over the next few weeks? But between the lack of LGBTQ+ representation on the pitch and FIFA’s checkered past with protecting its fans from homophobia and choosing anti-LGBTQ+ countries to host the event, wading into the World Cup can be a quagmire for queer sports fans. So we’re here to break it all down for you, from the number of queer players (sorry, you’re not going to be happy with the answer) to what Pride events you can expect, to just how LGBTQ+ fans are reacting.Are there any out players?While the Women's World Cup — and especially the U.S. team — is full of out LGBTQ+ players, the men's teams are devoid of any queer representation.Much like the NHL and other men’s professional sports leagues, there is not a single out player on any team participating in the World Cup.What kinds of Pride celebrations will be held during matches?With the last two World Cups being held in Russia and Qatar — two countries criticized for their treatment of the LGBTQ+ community — and homophobic chants becoming a frequent feature of FIFA-sanctioned games, queer fans were left feeling unwelcome.But this time around, “Pride Houses” are being launched across 16 host cities in North America to provide a refuge for queer people. Pride House United 2026 is an initiative dedicated to creating safe spaces for LGBTQ+ fans and athletes throughout the tournament. It gave the lucrative spot to Russia in 2018, Qatar in 2022, and has picked Saudi Arabia for 2034.“The United States is a real nightmare, in terms of queer travelers and ICE raids and racial profiling,” Keph Senett, a trustee for Pride House International, claimed to the SF Chronicle.England's official LGBTQ+ supporters' group, Three Lions Pride (3LP), announced back in January that they won’t be attending the World Cup because they fear facing “abuse, violence, or arrest just for their existence."German group Queer Football Fanclub (QFF) also said they are joining 3LP and won’t have an official presence at the tournament. "The Trump administration is putting more and more pressure on minorities and LGBTQI+ people […] and that makes it difficult to say 'yes, we are willing to go there and willing to attend the games,’” Sven Kistner, QFF spokesperson, told Sky Sports News.Who are the hot players to watch?There might not be any out LGBTQ+ athletes playing in the men’s World Cup, but there is plenty of eye candy for queer fans hoping to catch some games. He had a solid rookie season, playing in 13 games and ranking 32nd among 89 tackles, 23rd in pass blocking and 39th in run blocking according to Pro Football Focus.However, Campbell suffered an MCL sprain in Week 12, causing him to miss four games. When he returned, he began to struggle. According to NFL Next Gen Stats, Campbell allowed a total of 29 pressures in four postseason games, including 14 in Super Bowl LX.Campbell was placed in a difficult position during the playoffs. He was recovering from an injury and had to face some of the best defensive lines in the NFL. The playoffs are not like the regular season, where a few games can lack competitive intensity. Entering his third year at his alma mater, Bevacqua will serve on the committee for each of the next four seasons. During final Championship Week deliberations in Indianapolis, headquarters to the NCAA, committee members who also double as university athletic directors must leave the room when it’s time to discuss their school’s tournament chances (when applicable), so as not to influence any committee members. Notre Dame basketball has not made the NCAA Tournament since 2022. That season, the Irish won a school record 15 games Atlantic Coast Conference but was the last team (68th) selected to the field. Notre Dame beat Rutgers in double overtime in a play-in game in Dayton, Ohio before beating Alabama in a first-round game two days later in San Diego. The Irish came within two minutes of beating Texas Tech and advancing the Sweet 16 before a 59-53 loss. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMJill Scott peddles on in homecoming stretchJill Scott battled through a day of wind and constant torrential rain [BBC]Former Lioness Jill Scott is due to arrive in her home region in the penultimate leg of her Sport Relief challenge.She is aiming to cycle and run 388 miles (624km) from Wembley Stadium - the site of her historic 2022 Euros win - to her home town club at Sunderland's Stadium of Light on Friday.Scott battled through wind and constant torrential rain in her toughest leg yet, but said she "was from Sunderland so was used to it". She is due to arrive in Bishop Auckland later. She said she may "have to crawl over the finish line" in Sunderland in her final marathon leg of 28-mile (45 km). Scott has stopped along the way at football stadiums and community hubs that have been a part of her life and career, which have included Aston Villa, Everton, Man City and grassroots community team Bishop Auckland FC Ladies.She said she was "100% committed" to finishing the charity challenge because she wanted to "make a difference" to people's lives.The former Lioness said she was excited and a little nervous about the challenge [PA Media]Scott said the support had been "amazing" and the "last few days will live long in the memory".On the difficulties of the challenge, said she had stopped for a toilet break, but "actually got stuck and could not get up" adding that her legs "wouldn't get up".She said her "body was a bit broken now" but added she just "had to get through this and keep on going"."I just keep reminding myself that we're out here raising money for Sport Relief," she added. Today, a slow drip of Scotland fans has now turned into a full on flood. As I type, Mexico and South Africa is raging on the television, fans are now watching a World Cup their nation's involved in. It's now here. Boston is sizzling in the sunshine and stifling in the shade. Not that the Tartan Army will be particularly bothered. The questions of the game on Saturday still seem far away amid the early party revellers arriving, yet there's a feeling the meeting with Haiti will be here before we know it. There's so many questions, most of them will be thrown to Steve Clarke tomorrow afternoon at the Boston Stadium, which is about as close to Boston as Bothwell Services. First, get a forced DNA test to prove your gender, state GOP lawyer suggestsA recent court hearing on a lawsuit brought by six transgender Idahoans against the state’s latest bathroom bill has revealed just how unworkable the draconian new law would be. In fact, to enforce it, an attorney for the red state said restroom users might need to undergo forced DNA testing. House Bill 752, which passed the Legislature this year with only Republican votes, prohibits trans people from using public restrooms that match their gender identity, both in government-owned buildings and private businesses that serve the public. The suit says the Idaho law — one of three recently passed by Republican legislatures that impose criminal penalties on offenders — violates the plaintiffs’ constitutional rights to due process, equal protection, and privacy. The challenge was brought by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), the ACLU of Idaho, and Lambda Legal. Subscribe to our Newsletter today At the hearing, the judge in the case — Chief U.S. District Judge for the District of Idaho, Amanda K. Brailsford — questioned the state over how exactly they would determine the sex at birth of an individual accused of violating the law, The Idaho Capital Sun reports. Kell Olson, a trans attorney for Lambda Legal, told the judge that if police confronted him and asked for his ID, officers would find that his ID lists him as male. Brailsford noted, for the record, that most of the plaintiffs suing the state also have state-issued IDs with gender markers that are aligned with their gender identity. Idaho Solicitor General Michael Zarian suggested the solution was simple: “There is DNA testing.” Pressed on whether DNA testing required consent, Zarian hedged, saying that wasn’t necessarily the case and that he doubted the accused would be asked to undergo DNA testing on the spot. Lambda’s Olson told the court that DNA testing usually requires a warrant. Both the Idaho Sheriffs’ Association and the Idaho Fraternal Order of Police called the proposed law impractical and unworkable. There is no “clear or reasonable way” to determine a person’s sex at birth during a field contact without engaging in “invasive and inappropriate” questioning or searches, said one police group president. Following the hearing, ACLU of Idaho attorney Emily Croston said the state didn’t help itself on the issue of enforcement. “I don’t think the state has an answer for how you identify someone’s biological sex,” Croston told reporters. “Are we just going to look at folks as they enter a restroom and determine whether we think they look enough like a man or a woman? That’s ridiculous.” The hearing only reinforced the plaintiffs’ argument that the law is unconstitutionally vague, and police organizations’ earlier doubts that it’s practically unenforceable. Proving the former claim, Solicitor General Zarian tried using an exemption in the law to demonstrate how reasonable the ban is. The law allows individuals to use restrooms that don’t align with their sex if they are in “dire need” of going to the bathroom, he pointed out. Pressed by Judge Brailsford, Zarian acknowledged that it “might be difficult to prove someone had a dire need,” but that vagueness, he claimed, doesn’t mean that the law itself is unconstitutionally vague. Idaho law enforcement didn’t have to similarly tie themselves in knots when they formally opposed the ban during debate in the Legislature earlier this year. Both the Idaho Sheriffs’ Association and the Idaho Fraternal Order of Police called the proposed law impractical and unworkable. There is no “clear or reasonable way” to determine a person’s sex at birth during a field contact without engaging in “invasive and inappropriate” questioning or searches, said one police group president. The ACLU notes that analyses of public safety data have found policies inclusive of transgender people’s access to public accommodations have no impact on rates of harassment or violence, while policies that restrict access actually increase the risk of harassment and violence. Trans people are four times as likely as their cisgender peers to be the victims of violence. Nine bathroom bans have passed by red state legislatures in recent years, but Idaho’s is the only one to cover private businesses as well as government buildings. A first offense is a misdemeanor, with up to one year in prison; a second offense jumps to a felony, with up to five years in prison. A fourth violation would constitute a third felony conviction, punishable under Idaho’s persistent violator statute by a mandatory minimum of five years and up to life in prison.
