Where Trump has lost support with independents, according to AP-NORC polling
A man wears an "I voted" sticker on his shirt, printed with the American flag and the U.S. constitution, after voting at Wa-Ke Hatchee Recreation Center in Fort Myers, Fla, on Election Day, Nov. 8, 2022. (AP Photo/Rebecca Blackwell, File)2026-06-12T09:02:31Z WASHINGTON (AP) — Independents have grown increasingly unhappy with President Donald Trump during his second term, a new AP-NORC polling analysis finds, particularly those without a college degree. The analysis from researchers at The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research shows that while about half of independents without a college education had a positive view of Trump around the 2024 election, his approval with that group fell to about one-quarter this spring. That shift has erased the large education gap that existed among independents in the months before Trump took office for his second term, with independents now holding similarly negative views of the president regardless of their level of education. The analysis was conducted by aggregating nearly two dozen AP-NORC polls conducted between July 2024 and April 2026, allowing for a deeper look at how support for Trump changed during several distinct periods, including the last six months of 2024, the first 100 days of Trump’s presidency, the summer of 2025 when the Big Beautiful Bill passed, last fall’s government shutdown and the beginning of the Iran war. The compiled polling shows a steady decline among independents throughout Trump’s second term. His standing has also dropped among several small but important groups that moved toward him in the 2024 presidential election, including Black and Hispanic independents. More Americans than ever consider themselves independents, and they are among the groups that shifted toward Trump in the 2024 presidential election. Any erosion in that support could signal trouble for Trump and Republicans headed into the midterm elections, which are often seen as reflection of how voters feel about their governing party. Read More Tafari Torres, a senior research associate at NORC who co-authored the analysis, noted that while Democrats’ and Republicans’ views of Trump have held largely steady in his second term, independents’ opinions are still moving. “Independents are, broadly, the people who are reacting to the events and dropping in their support,” he said. Dramatic declines during Trump’s first 100 daysTrump’s return to the White House was fueled, in part, by independent voters who saw him as the stronger candidate on key issues like the economy. The new analysis, which looks at Trump’s favorability and presidential approval ratings, shows that once he took the helm, their views soured quickly.Independents without a college degree had a much more positive view of Trump than college-educated independents did during and just after the 2024 election, but that shifted in the first few months of his term. Positive views of Trump among independents without a college degree fell from 48% in the months before he returned to office to 31% in polling conducted during Trump’s first 100 days back in office. Those warm views declined even further, to about one-quarter, during the government shutdown and the early months of 2026.Only about 3 in 10 college-educated independents, by contrast, had a positive view of Trump before he returned to office, making their drop to about one-quarter much less dramatic. “The decline among no-college independents was steeper and it was greater than the slight decline in college independents,” said Sean Collins, a research associate at NORC who co-authored the analysis. “That was surprising, especially given, when you think of Trump’s coalitions, those without college degrees is usually one of the ones that that stands out.”Hispanic, younger independents grow disenchantedAmericans without a college degree have long been a key part of Trump’s coalition. But Trump also won in 2024 by making gains among groups that tend to support Democrats, including Hispanic adults. About 4 in 10 independent voters — 42% — voted for Trump in 2024, up from 37% in the 2020 presidential election. Independent voters without a college degree were a little more likely to back Trump over former Vice President Kamala Harris in the last election, according to AP VoteCast, and Hispanic independents were about evenly split between the two. The picture looks much bleaker for the president now.Nearly half of Hispanic independents — 46% — saw Trump favorably in the polling conducted around the presidential election. His approval among these adults dropped quickly in his second term, falling as low as 15% during last fall’s government shutdown before landing around one-quarter in the spring.Younger independents also became less supportive of the president, while independents age 60 and older remained mostly stable. Other AP-NORC polling has pointed to Trump losing ground among younger Republicans over inflation concerns and Hispanic Americans growing increasingly discontented. “The gains Trump appeared to make during the election, I don’t know if they’re sticking around. He’s experienced some significant shifts among those people,” Torres said. ”From our research, they don’t appear to be permanent gains.” The economy is frustrating many independentsPolling suggests that the economy as at the root of many Americans’ frustrations with Trump, including independents.About half of independents who supported Trump in 2024 said inflation was the single most important factor for their vote, AP VoteCast found, and most expressed high levels of concern about the cost of food and gas.More than a year into Trump’s second term, inflation remains high, fueled by gas prices that remain elevated as the Iran war continues. An AP-NORC poll conducted in April found that about 3 in 10 independents were “extremely” or “very” concerned about being able to afford groceries in the last few months, and a similar share were worried about being able to afford gas.The analysis found that Americans’ views of the U.S. economy tend to align with their view of the president. Those with negative views of the country’s economy tended to have negative views of Trump, and about 8 in 10 independents described the U.S. economy this spring as poor. The latest AP-NORC polling from May found that only about 3 in 10 independents approve of how Trump is handling the economy, in line with the roughly 3 in 10 who said that at the beginning of his second term. The April poll found only about 1 in 10 independents — 12% — approved of how Trump was handling the cost of living.——This AP-NORC analysis of 4,836 independents was conducted over 21 AP-NORC surveys, blocked into five time periods before and during President Donald Trump’s second term. Independents are classified as panelists who do not select that they identify with or lean toward either the Democratic or Republican Party. Once beset by power outages, Puerto Ricans also hit with severe water shortages
Bryan Pérez hauls a five-gallon water jug to his apartment in the Villa Kennedy public housing complex in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Wednesday, June 10, 2026. (AP Photo/Danica Coto)2026-06-12T07:11:15Z SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Thousands of Puerto Ricans are struggling with water shortages so severe that the governor of the U.S. territory has activated the National Guard and emergency responders are fielding calls every day.Officials have not publicly pinpointed the cause, with shortages largely affecting some areas in the island’s most populated cities, including the capital San Juan. The island’s utilities company extracts water from rivers, reservoirs and underground aquifers that have in the past provided sufficient supply for the island’s 3.2 million people.Residents are being forced to buy potable water, spend money at laundromats and haul heavy buckets up several flights of stairs to wash dishes, flush toilets and take showers. The elderly and disabled struggle the most, with community leaders noting that some have been hospitalized as water shortages persist. Jorge Figueroa, a community leader for several impoverished San Juan neighborhoods, stood by his car one recent morning fielding questions from residents wondering when the next water truck would swing by.“They are playing with people’s health and lives,” Figueroa said. Shortages are widespreadSome customers in San Juan began reporting intermittent service more than a year ago, with the governor acknowledging the infrastructure has lacked investment and maintenance for decades. The water outages have grown so severe that Mayor Miguel Romero sued Puerto Rico’s Water and Sewer Authority in late May.People like Jeannette Mercado Rodríguez have spent up to two weeks without water as Puerto Rico’s searing summer starts and meteorologists are already issuing heat advisories.“This is really exhausting; it’s maddening,” she said. Read More The 52-year-old is among the lucky ones: a water truck is stationed near her public housing complex, Las Margaritas. But she still has to haul five buckets and 10 2-liter (half-gallon) bottles up to her third-floor apartment every day. She recently injured her shoulder doing so. “We can’t take it sometimes,” Mercado said, confiding that she has broken down and cried. “There are older people here, bedridden people.” Sign up for Morning Wire: Our flagship newsletter breaks down the biggest headlines of the day. Nearly 40,000 customers were hit with water outages on the first weekend of June. That prompted Gov. Jenniffer González to activate the National Guard, which began distributing water via four trucks with a capacity of 2,000 gallons (7,570 liters) each.Puerto Rico’s Tourism Company brought in additional water trucks with a capacity of 12,800 gallons (48,453 liters) to help serve hotels and short-term rentals. The need for water is so great that even Puerto Rico’s Department of Agriculture sanitized two large trucks that transport milk and instead used them to deliver potable water.Despite those measures, water remains scarce for many in San Juan and beyond. At least one stationary tanker in an impoverished community sat empty for a couple of days, with residents cheering the water truck when it arrived, calling municipal workers “heroes.” Other residents also complain that the government doesn’t inform them when a water truck will stop by, with those at work missing out.“This has been a disaster,” said Luz Laborde, president of a neighborhood association in Santurce, a working-class community in San Juan. “This is inhuman … It’s destroying the emotional state of a people.” Puerto Ricans demand waterDozens of Puerto Ricans young and old crowded into a courtroom on a recent morning, eager to hear a ruling on the lawsuit that San Juan’s mayor filed against the island’s water and sewer company as they questioned when their water would return.“We are exhausted,” said Marcia Soler París, a 61-year-old community leader. “We shouldn’t be living this way. We don’t deserve this.”Every day at dawn, phones ping as people in San Juan and elsewhere share whether they have water, just a trickle or nothing at all.Soler calls the emergency management office every other day to request a water truck for her and her neighbors. She lives with her daughter, who has three boys ages 13, 10 and 4, and they play soccer every day. Like many, they don’t have a cistern. “I don’t know what it is to see a stream of water,” said Soler, who recently spent $40 at a laundromat and was forced to buy plastic cups and plates for her family. The extra costs are straining the budgets of many on the island of 3.2 million people where more than 40% live below the poverty line.Soler said some of her neighbors bedridden and caregivers are forced to use towels and wet wipes to clean them. Another neighbor is blind, so people ferry water up to her apartment. For years, chronic power outages have been a big frustration for many Puerto Ricans. Water woes also are at the top of the list now.At Villa Kennedy, a nearby public housing complex, Elizabeth Sánchez, 79, explained how she injured her waist carrying buckets of water. Her husband can no longer help because he injured his back for the same reason.“What we are going through is horrible,” she said as she began to cry. Judge orders experts to investigate water woesIn February 2025, Puerto Rico’s governor appointed Luis González Delgado as executive president of the island’s Water and Sewer Authority.Months later, former regional director Roberto Martínez Toledo was replaced. But Martínez was recently appointed to a new committee ordered by a judge to work with the agency to investigate and solve the chronic water shortages. The mayor of San Juan, who is a member of the governor’s party, said that if Martínez hadn’t been removed from his position, “we wouldn’t be here talking about this issue.”The new head of the water and sewer agency blamed Martínez for some of the problems.“(The crisis) could have been avoided if Roberto Martínez had answered the phone the first day I called him,” González told reporters this week, adding that he is willing to work with him. Some Puerto Ricans are demanding González resign as they clamor for Martínez to return to his old job, while a growing number are blaming the governor for the situation. On Wednesday night, the governor announced that all projects aimed at fixing water-related infrastructure have started with an investment of $217 million. Those without water say they are still being billed for it.“That’s another outrage,” said Laborde, the community leader. “You lose no matter what.” 获取更多RSS:https://feedx.net https://feedx.site

Ex-Watford and Swans boss Jackett dies aged 64
Kenny Jackett led Swansea, Millwall and Wolves to promotion [Getty Images]Former Watford, Swansea City, Millwall and Wolves manager and Wales international Kenny Jackett has died at the age of 64.Watford-born Jackett made over 300 appearances for his hometown side during a one-club playing career that also saw him win 31 caps.Forced to retire at the age of 28, following persistent knee injuries, he began a long coaching career which also included spells in charge at Rotherham United, Portsmouth and Leyton Orient. Jackett became director of football at Gillingham in 2022, but stood down from his role for medical reasons in November 2024.A left-sided defender or midfielder, Jackett was part of the Watford side who won promotion to the top flight under Graham Taylor, and played for the Hornets in the 1984 FA Cup final as they were beaten by Everton. As a manager, he led Swansea to promotion from the fourth tier in 2004-05, their Welsh club's final season at their former Vetch Field home, and masterminded a Football League Trophy triumph in 2006.He won the League One play-offs with Millwall in 2010 and the third-tier title at Wolves four years later, while he won the Checkatrade Trophy at Portsmouth in 2018-19.League Managers Association (LMA) Chief Executive Richard Bevan said: "Kenny stands as one of the most respected managers to have plied their trade in the EFL, a hugely capable leader whose work across four decades has left a lasting influence on the many players, coaches and colleagues who benefited from his guidance.""Kenny is a huge loss to all that knew and loved him. Our thoughts are with his wife Samantha, sons David and Ryan, and all of his family and friends, who join us in mourning."Though born in England, Jackett was eligible for Wales through his father Frank , who also played for Watford. When injury brought a premature end to his playing career in 1990 he remained at Vicarage Road and became a coach under future England boss Taylor, before being appointed manager in 1996 when Taylor became director of football. He subsequently went on to spend three years in charge of Swansea and six at Millwall before starting a three-year spell at Wolves in 2013."He embodied everything we like to see in a manager, humility, professionalism and a deep care for his players and staff," added Bevan."He improved every club he served and did so with quiet dignity throughout his career. From his first role at Watford to his final role at Gillingham, Kenny's work was characterised by an incredible sense of responsibility to his teams and to the game itself."

Nation's No. 2 DL Texas over Georgia football
The Georgia Bulldogs have lost out on a major defensive line recruit. Four-star defensive lineman Kasi Currie has committed to the Texas Longhorns, according to Hayes Fawcett. Currie chose Texas over Georgia, Oregon, and Ohio State.Currie is a four-star prospect from the class of 2027. The 6-foot-4, 315-pound defensive lineman plays high school football for Sierra Canyon High School in Chatsworth, California. He is the No. 2 defensive lineman and No. 37 overall recruit in the nation. It's another big recruit for the Texas Longhorns to add. They have the No. 19 recruiting class in the nation, with one five-star and five four-stars. Wide receiver Easton Royal is the No. 15 prospect in the nation, while Currie, edge Cameron Hall, cornerback Karnell James, and tight end Brock Williams are all top 10 in each of their positions.Meanwhile, Georgia has the No. 25 class in the nation. They've earned two five-star commitments from running back Kemon Spell and tight end Jaxon Dollar. Four-star offensive lineman Kelsey Adams, four-star linebacker Joakim Gouda, and four-star quarterback Colton Nussmeier are also committed to Georgia. The Bulldogs earned a lot of recruiting momentum recently, but they lost out on a big recruiting battle for their defensive lineman. They've earned one commitment on their defensive line from three-star Waylon Wooten, but their history of earning blue-chip recruits at that position suggests they should get another one this season. Marcus Fakatou, who's the No. 3 DL in the country, listed Georgia in his top five schools, and with Texas landing Currie, Georgia could spend more resources recruiting him.BREAKING: Four-Star DL Kasi Currie has Committed to Texas, source told @RivalsThe 6’5 310 DL chose the Longhorns over Georgia, Oregon, and Ohio StateHe’s ranked as a Top 5 DL in the 2027 Rivals Industry Rankings 🤘https://t.co/DrXteNtAF5pic.twitter.com/Vutfpn46eX— Hayes Fawcett (@Hayesfawcett3) June 11, 2026Follow UGA Wire on Instagram, Facebook, X or Threads for more Georgia football coverage! Panthers QB Bryce Young speaks on the state of his TE room
The Carolina Panthers have several positions that could still use an upgrade before the 2026 NFL season begins. But no area of concern may be greater than the tight end spot. While the room is adequate enough to run what the Panthers do on offense, none of its inhabitants stand out as a legitimate pass-catching threat. In fact, Carolina hasn't had one of those since Greg Olsen. At the top is Tommy Tremble—who's a great blocker, but has only scored 11 touchdowns since he was drafted back in 2021. 2024 fourth-round pick Ja'Tavion Sanders has yet to emerge as a reliable weapon and it's too early to tell what 2025 fifth-rounder Mitchell Evans can be.Nevertheless, quarterback Bryce Young told reporters earlier this week that he's confident in the group.“I’m super confident in the room... Great group of guys that work really hard. The one thing that I think I’ve really seen the growth in – it’s been a stable room – those guys have come in and been really smart. Their willingness to work, we’ve thrown a lot at them over this offseason… they’ve done a great job of playing fast through that. And you’ve seen them take ownership, you see us having a lot more conversations . . ."But what if the production needs to be kicked up a notch? As far as free agents go, Jonnu Smith is the last name worth exploring. Once he finds a landing spot, the Panthers will have little choice but to wait until next year's draft to address this spot—unless they feel like making a trade. However, given how few resources they have devoted to tight end the last few years, it's difficult to see them pursuing a deal for a real difference-maker. Hopefully this changes. At the moment, there's no concrete solution in sight, though.Follow @ThePanthersWire on Twitter/X for more Panthers content. This article originally appeared on Panthers Wire: Panthers QB Bryce Young shares praise for his TEs

John Mateer has the belief of everyone inside OU's program
It's been well-documented that the success or the failure of the 2026 Oklahoma Sooners will very likely fall on the level of play OU gets from the offensive side of the ball. With head coach Brent Venables in charge, there's belief that Oklahoma's defense will be a strong unit each and every year. On special teams, the Sooners return all of last year's production from a strong group. That leaves the offense, but more specifically, the pressure is on redshirt-senior starting quarterback John Mateer in 2026. So often in football, the QB position dictates how good or bad the offense is. While the Sooners made the College Football Playoff last year, they were held back at times by an offense that was still figuring things out, including Mateer. Now in his final collegiate season, OU's offense will go as he goes. Each year, each program in the country has a chance to make a change at key positions within the program like head coach or starting quarterback. Sometimes, those changes are mandatory, as a coach leaves or a QB goes to the NFL, but the majority of the time, teams get the opportunity to make that decision, especially at quarterback in college football's player movement era. OU has already chosen to stand behind Venables, even after a couple of difficult seasons, and he rewarded that belief with a CFP trip in 2025.Oklahoma chose to run it back with Mateer, just as Mateer chose to run it back with Oklahoma. This season will determine whether or not the two parties made the right call, but it sounds like there's no doubt about OU's quarterback inside the Barry Switzer Center.Gabe Ikard, a former OU standout offensive lineman and the co-host of "The Oklahoma Breakdown with Ikard and Lehman" appeared on the On3 Sports podcast "Crain & Cone" to preview the Sooners ahead of the new season. When asked about Mateer, he assured that there's no question within the program that he was the guy for them all along."I'd say the best way to describe it is everyone in that building completely believes in that guy," Ikard said. "... Ultimately, I'm not worried about John Mateer. I'm not. I think the guy's talented. I think he's he's got the stuff you want your leader to have. He's got the stuff you want your starting quarterback to have. If the other 10 guys around him on the field do their job at a high level, Mateer's going to be fine."Belief is a very good thing to have on your side in college football, especially when you're the starter under center at a historic blue-blood program like Oklahoma. When faced with a decision after OU's playoff loss this past December, Mateer made the choice to come back to Norman, but that also means that Venables, general manager Jim Nagy, and offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Ben Arbuckle also made the choice to bring Mateer back, and made the choice to believe that he was the right guy for the job. According to Ikard, that belief in Mateer has spread throughout the building, and it's a belief he's earned based on his leadership, his play, and his overall mentality since getting to Norman. This fall will let us know whether or not those in charge were right about Mateer, as the Sooners chase a deep playoff run in 2026.Contact/Follow us @SoonersWire on X (formerly Twitter) and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Oklahoma news, notes and opinions. Is Shankland finally the striker Scotland have been waiting for?
[Getty Images]Steven Naismith remembers it well. A game in Amsterdam before the last Euros, Lawrence Shankland up front on his own, a friendly to see if he was a contender for when the big stuff happened in Germany.Naismith is Steve Clarke's assistant now but back then he was Shankland's manager at Hearts. It was mid-March 2024 and the striker was tearing it up at Tynecastle. He had 28 goals to his name, including a run of 15 in 15. He was flying - and starting against the Netherlands."At one point, the ball breaks to him 20 yards out and rather than taking it out of his feet and finishing, he tries to reverse it for Scott McTominay," says Naismith."I was watching it and that moment told me that he's still at sea at international level. See, when you go into the international set-up the first thing in your mind is fitting in. Just fit in. And I think that was Shanks fitting in. "I texted him after and I said 'I cannae work out why you're passing to McTominay because I'd rather you have that shot than anybody else'. But when I thought about it I could understand it because maybe he was a bit unsure of his place."I told him he needed to think about what's got him there. 'You're in that starting team because the manager trusts you to take these chances. Don't pass them up'. "He's totally different now. He's comfortable. He believes he's part of it. And that's why he's in the squad - for these moments. He's matured so, so much. He's just elevated his game."The rise and rise of 'Meatball' McGinnWhat history tells us about Scotland's World Cup openersCould one win get Scotland out of World Cup group?'It was obvious he was playing below his level'This Scotland squad is full of stories and Shankland's sudden rise to undroppable status is one of the better ones. In their quieter moments, you wonder if Shankland and Andy Robertson reminisce about their time together at Queen's Park, their trips to Elgin and Berwick, Annan and Montrose.Thirteen years ago they were team-mates in the fourth tier of Scottish football, finalists in the play-offs to enter the rarefied air of the third tier. They lost 1-0 at home to Peterhead in the first leg and 3-1 away in the second (attendance 954.)From Balmoor - home of Peterhead - to Boston and the greatest show on earth. Robertson's journey to the World Cup has been laced with huge moments on giant stages with Liverpool over many years, but Shankland is only now emerging as a main man in his country's eyes. His run of form this season has made Clarke alter his thinking from one upfront to two, from Che Adams as the lone runner up top to a partnership with Shankland that has looked potent. Shankland scored 24 goals in 38 games last season. He has 10 in his last 12, eight in his last nine, six in his last six. He has played 173 minutes of international football since last August and has scored four goals. One every 43 minutes - no matter who you're getting them against - is an astonishing return. He's taken the long road to Boston, from Queen's Park to Dunfermline, from Dunfermline to Aberdeen, from Aberdeen to St Mirren, and then Morton and Ayr United in the summer of 2017, when things started to happen for him. That's where he encountered Ian McCall, the Ayr manager who has become a mentor and friend to Shankland. "Our relationship had a rocky start," says McCall. "He left me standing for 45 minutes at Lochinch training centre armed with the loan forms to bring him to Ayr from Aberdeen. "It was only when I received a call from Owen Coyle [a good friend of Lawrence senior] that I found out he was on his way to Cappielow to sign for Morton. I was a little angry - it's the first and last time he ever let me down."McCall never gave up on him and eventually persuaded the striker to join him at Ayr. Shankland scored in nine of his first 10 games for the club, who were in the League One at the time. He finished the season with 29 in 33 and helped them get promoted. Then he hit 34 in 41 in the Championship"It became obvious quite early that he was playing levels below where he was capable of playing," says his former manager. "He can score every type of goal; tap ins, headers, right foot, left foot, curlers, drives, chips and on the odd occasion from 50 yards..."Shankland launched one from halfway - Kenny McLean style - after he left Ayr to join Dundee United, a 53-yard strike against St Johnstone in January 2021. "When you have his varied abilities it was clear that he would get to a high level," says McCall. "But it took him longer than we both thought."Getting older, but getting betterNot much has come easy to Shankland. In his pre-Ayr years, he bounced in the lower leagues, made a move to Aberdeen that never worked out, had a really good first season with Dundee United and an underwhelming second, then went to Beerschot in Belgium in 2021 and that didn't work either. When he fetched up at Hearts in 2022, he came alive again - 28 goals in 48 games in his debut season, then 33 in 56 the season after. He went to the Euros, made three - albeit brief - appearances off the bench, but at least he was in the picture. There was another challenge on its way, though. In 2024-25, Shankland only scored nine for Hearts. They finished seventh in the Premiership. He didn't look as fit or as mobile as he should have and didn't always play in the position he should have.Contractual stuff carried on and on in the background. He was touted as a future Rangers player but they weren't interested. His representatives wanted more money for him to stay at Tynecastle and the club weren't prepared to pay it. It was knotted and divisive. Then, Derek McInnes came in as manager and made his admiration for Shankland crystal clear to his new board. A deal was done, a player-manager relationship blossomed and Shankland was immense. He scored in the famous game against Denmark last November, netted two beauties against Curacao in Scotland's farewell game before leaving for America, and again in their first games in the United States, a friendly against Bolivia last weekend.Suddenly, Scotland look dangerous. The natural finisher that they've been crying out for has finally arrived. His goals-per-minutes return is among the best of any Scottish striker in the last half a century."He has a number of terrific attributes but most vital amongst them is his awareness of finding space," says McCall, "Lawrence can find spaces early and exploit them."The higher you go in football that trait becomes more and more important. His touch is magnificent. He's at his most effective when he starts high and drops into areas between midfield and attack. "I hope he'd agree that the love he received from the dressing room, and the fans, at Ayr allowed him to recover his swagger. He became a leader in our dressing room and has flourished in the years since."Shankland has just moved to Rangers, a deal the club should have done years ago. He turns 31 in August. After all these years he now looks at home in this team and comfortable at the highest level. As Naismith says, he knows he belongs. That realisation has come at the perfect time.World Cup fixtures and group standingsHow to watch the World Cup on the BBCEverything you need to know about the World Cup

Jaguars Liam Coen evaluates Travon Walker's play during minicamp
The Jacksonville Jaguars' three-day minicamp has concluded, and head coach Liam Coen was very pleased with what he saw from defensive end Travon Walker."Travon Walker showed up in a big way, especially when we got into some competitive situations, doing what I challenged him with, which was to dominate," Coen said, via ESPN. "Through the first two days of minicamp he didn't lose many reps, so I think we got better."During Coen's two stints with the LA Rams as an offensive coach, he saw the game-wrecking ability of Aaron Donald up close and on a daily basis. In his end-of-season meeting with Walker, which lasted almost two hours, Coen told Walker that he wants to have to remove him from practice because the offense is unable to get anything accomplished with him on the field.Walker has shown during his time with the Jaguars that he can be quite disruptive. During each of the 2023 and 2024 seasons, Walker recorded 10-plus sacks and ranked in the top 25 among his position group in quarterback pressures, according to PFF.Along with his pass rush production, Walker brings a well-rounded skill set to the Jaguars' defensive front, holding up very well against the run while also adding versatility to this unit. This article originally appeared on Jaguars Wire: Jaguars DE Travon Walker shows up in a 'big way' during minicamp

Head of Palestinian soccer not granted US visa to attend World Cup
RAMALLAH, West Bank (AP) — The head of the Palestinian Football Association is waiting in Mexico City for permission to enter the United States with other federation heads attending the 2026 FIFA World Cup.Jibril Rajoub went to the opening match between Mexico and South Africa on Thursday. But he is among several people accredited to attend the World Cup who have been denied visas or have yet to receive them from the United States.“I don’t believe that it’s fair to use or to abuse and deny the right of all footballers all over the world to attend,” the veteran Palestinian political figure said in an interview with The Associated Press. The Palestinian team did not qualify for the World Cup, but FIFA typically invites the heads of football associations from around the world to the event every four years, which it frames as a celebration of global unity.“Everyone will be welcome in Canada, Mexico and the United States for the FIFA World Cup next year. We are working exactly for that,” FIFA President Gianni Infantino said last year. The United States, however, has refused entry to delegates from a raft of countries, including a referee from Somalia and a photographer traveling with Iraq’s team.Infantino said this week that FIFA had been trying to resolve visa issues but could not overrule the U.S. government.“We need to respect that we are not the kings of the world who can rule over governments and police forces,” he told reporters on Wednesday. The U.S. State Department had no immediate comment on Rajoub’s visa, but last year implemented new restrictions on Palestinian passport holders, including on anyone who had been employed by the Palestinian Authority. It revoked a visa to allow Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to travel to the United Nations General Assembly last September.Rajoub and other Palestinian soccer officials have long argued that Israel violates statutes by allowing teams from settlements in the occupied West Bank play in Israel’s national league. They have pushed FIFA to sanction Israel, also decrying restrictions on the movement of Palestinian players and how war in the Gaza Strip has destroyed 80% of sports facilities there.Last month, Rajoub refused to shake hands with the head of Israel’s football federation at Infantino’s behest because he said the gesture would not heal wounds but instead whitewash Israel’s actions.Rajoub pointed out that when Russia hosted the 2018 World Cup, it did not implement comparable visa restrictions for people who were invited to the tournament.__ Matthew Lee contributed reporting from Washington

Republic of Ireland v Israel to be played at neutral venue
Dublin's Aviva Stadium was originally scheduled to host the fixture [Getty Images]The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) has confirmed the Republic of Ireland's home Nations League fixture with Israel later this year will take place at a neutral venue. The governing body's board has held meetings in recent weeks to discuss the "operational aspects" of hosting Israel at Dublin's Aviva Stadium on 4 October. On Friday, the FAI said Uefa approved a request to host the game at a neutral overseas venue and behind closed doors. The sides are also scheduled to meet at a neutral venue for Israel's home Group B3 match on 27 September."Following consultation with various stakeholders, the Association is of the view that operational challenges could impact on the delivery of the game on home soil, so the fixture will be played away from the Aviva Stadium," said the FAI. "The Association thanks An Garda Síochana [Irish police] for their support and advice over recent months and states that the decision to relocate to a neutral venue is one that has been considered an appropriate course of action by the FAI Board with the support of Uefa."Pressure has grown in Ireland for a boycott of the games because of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, with the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign having held a protest at the Dáil (Irish parliament) last month.A 'Stop The Game' campaign was launched by the pressure group Irish Sport For Palestine, while May's 1-0 friendly victory over Qatar at Aviva Stadium was disrupted when tennis balls featuring the Palestine flag were thrown on to the pitch.Following the Nations League draw in February, the FAI confirmed it would fulfil the fixtures, with chief executive David Courell saying the governing body had "no choice" and could face "serious consequences" if it pulled out of the games.Last month, experienced Republic of Ireland defender Seamus Coleman said the issue "should have been dealt with above us", while captain Nathan Collins said that if individual players felt strongly enough to boycott the games, "we are not going to stand against them".Players won't be stopped from taking stand - Collins on Israel fixtures'We shouldn't be in this position' on Israel games - ColemanLast month, the Republic of Ireland's friendly with Qatar at Aviva Stadium was disrupted when tennis balls featuring the Palestinian flag were thrown on to the pitch [Getty Images]Boycotting games would have 'profound impact' - FAIOn Friday, the FAI said it "understands and respects the views expressed by players and staff, supporters, its members, campaigners, members of the public and the Irish footballing community in relation to this fixture".The FAI also shared a statement from the Palestinian Football Association, which said: "The Palestinian Football Association expresses its appreciation for the principled positions taken by the Football Association of Ireland in support of the rights of the Palestinian people and Palestinian athletes. "The Palestinian Football Association also affirms its respect for the decision made by the Football Association of Ireland within the framework of its sporting and international obligations, in a manner that enables it to continue fulfilling its noble mission of serving football and promoting the values of justice, solidarity, and mutual respect."Despite having faced calls from within Ireland to boycott the games, the FAI insists it will fulfil the fixtures as pulling out of the matches would have "a profound impact on the whole of Irish football". It said the result of not fulfilling the games would be the forfeiture of six points which could lead to relegation to League C in the Nations League and an impact on the team's Uefa and Fifa rankings while highlighting that "the converse of these impacts would apply to Israel", possibly increasing their chances of Nations League promotion and Euro 2028 qualification. "Beyond the sporting implications, there would be broader consequences for Irish football, such as reduced capacity to support clubs and leagues through critical services such as safeguarding, educational programmes, and player development opportunities," added the statement."Also, the impact on Ireland international teams could result in the withdrawal of underage teams and a reduction in the level of support and services provided to players and staff."Last year, the FAI overwhelmingly approved a motion to call on Uefa to ban Israel from European club and international competitions. On Friday, the association said it "continues to reflect the sentiment" of that motion and said it will engage with its members at a forthcoming extraordinary general meeting. The Republic of Ireland will also face Austria and Kosovo in Group B3 of the 2026-27 Nations League.

Gasperini in talks with Soule’s agent to decide his future
Gasperini in talks with Soule’s agent to decide his futureMatias Soulé’s future at Roma is in the balance. The Argentine winger has had a mixed season: an excellent first half with important goals and assists, but a groin problem in the second half of the season has slowed his progress. The Giallorossi appear intent on selling the 2003-born player to comply with the settlement agreement with UEFA by June 30th. In short, a substantial capital gain is needed. This is why Soulé is reportedly considering offers around €40 million, €20 million of which would be needed to secure a deal with European football’s governing body.As reported by Repubblica, in recent days the Argentine winger’s agent has been in contact with Gasperini’s entourage, who are working on the sporting side of things, with Morrow, a financial executive, observing the matter with interest. The signal is clear: the Giallorossi must sell the 2003-born player, but official offers will be needed, which have not yet arrived at Trigoria. Aston Villa, Bournemouth, Borussia Dortmund, and Stuttgart have all set their sights on the player.

Monaco Grand Prix result changes – five days after F1 race ended
Pierre Gasly has had his third-place finish at the Monaco Grand Prix reinstated after a successful appeal from his Alpine F1 team. Gasly finished third at the chequered flag before he was punished by two five-second time penalties – due to speeding in the pit lane – and dropped to seventh. However, Alpine appealed the penalties, given several drivers fell foul of the pit-lane speed limit in last Sunday’s race and amid concerns about the official F1 timing of the pit-lane speed. Now, on Friday ahead of this weekend’s Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, Alpine’s right of review has proved successful – and Gasly reclaims his third-place finish, with Isack Hadjar dropping to fourth. It also means Oscar Piastri (to fifth), Liam Lawson (to sixth) and Arvid Lindblad (to seventh) all drop one place in the final race classification. An Alpine statement read: “We welcome the decision made by the FIA to deem our Right of Review as admissible following the final classification of last weekend’s Monaco Grand Prix. “As a result, the Stewards have rescinded the two five-second penalties imposed on Car #10, which reinstates the team’s third-place finish. “We would like to thank the FIA and Formula One Management for its transparency and co-operation throughout the Right of Review process and for reaching this decision. “The team’s focus is now very much on this weekend’s Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix and striving for the best possible result with both of its cars.”More to follow…

Cason Wallace report card: What's next for Thunder guard offensively?
Cason Wallace put on a cape in the fourth quarter of Game 7 against the Spurs. The defensive dynamo scored 14 points on 5-of-6 shooting. The Thunder came up short, but it was no fault of Wallace’s. After the end of each season, The Oklahoman publishes a series of report cards on each of the Thunder’s main roster players. Grades will be curved relative to role and expectations. Next up: Cason Wallace. More: Kenrich Williams report card: Kenny Hustle has become new Mr. ThunderCason Wallace by the numbers 77 games, 26.6 minutes, 8.6 points, 3.1 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 1.9 steals, 43.2% FG, 35.1% 3FG, 80.1% FT 77: Wallace led the Thunder in games played. He was second in total minutes (2,046) behind Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (2,259). Wallace has been an ironman, averaging 76 games played per season in his three-year career. Among his 2023 draft classmates, Wallace ranks second in games played (227) behind Portland’s Toumani Camara (230). 150: Wallace led the NBA in total steals. Hawks guard Dyson Daniels was second with 149. Wallace edged Daniels by a steal despite Wallace playing 474 fewer minutes than Daniels. 43.2%: Wallace’s field-goal percentage has declined in each of his first three seasons. He shot 49.1% as a rookie, 47.4% last season and 43.2% this season. His 2-point and 3-point percentages have simultaneously dipped. 48.4%: Wallace’s 3-point percentage in the playoffs — best among Thunder players and sixth-best among all players (minimum 20 attempts). Wallace shot 30 of 62 from three. He was second behind Alex Caruso (33) in playoff 3-pointers for OKC. 27: Wallace scored a career-high 27 points on Feb. 1 at Denver. He had another 27-point game later in February at Toronto. More: Thunder GM Sam Presti fights back against 'bully pulpit' attacking Shai Gilgeous-AlexanderThe good Wallace was named to the All-Defensive second team. Among the 10 players who made the two All-Defensive teams, Wallace was seventh in total votes. Thunder center Chet Holmgren made All-Defensive first team. Lu Dort and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander received votes. Wallace was the Thunder’s most valuable perimeter defender. He averaged almost two steals per game. His takeaways were mean-spirited. If you dribbled near him, he’d rip the ball from you. Wallace was a playoff riser. He averaged 8.6 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 2.1 steals — all playoff career highs. He had 48/48/88 shooting splits. He had a massive February, a month in which the Thunder was largely without Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jalen Williams. Wallace averaged 14.6 points in 12 February game. It was the only month in which Wallace averaged double-digit points. He also dished 4.8 assists, showing what he could do with more offensive responsibility. “That was a fun point in time,” Wallace said in his exit interview. “That was fun having the ball and just being able to showcase my game and do what the team needed me to do to win.” More: Isaiah Joe report card: Thunder guard's regular-season success didn't carry overThe bad Where was the February version of Wallace in the playoffs? His 3-point shooting and defense were superb, but the Thunder needed another capable on-ball guard in the absences of Jalen Williams and Ajay Mitchell. The opportunity was there for Wallace to assume more of an attacking and playmaking role, but it didn’t happen. Wallace’s shooting percentages are trending in the wrong direction. After shooting 42% from three as a rookie, Wallace has been at 36% and 35% the past two seasons. More: Here's what OKC Thunder GM Sam Presti said during end-of-season news conferenceCason Wallace offseason homework Wallace is a bit of a tweener offensively. Still only 22, there’s plenty of time for him to develop into a viable on-the-ball guard. And he clearly wants to explore and expand that part of his game. On the other hand, imagine if Wallace set aside some of his offensive ambitions and went all in on becoming a better 3-point shooter? Either way, Wallace is in line for a monster payday. Because even this version of Wallace is immensely valuable. The former No. 10 pick is eligible for an extension. More: Chet Holmgren report card: Thunder center's All-NBA season tarnished vs SpursCason Wallace grade: B+ He didn’t make a huge leap offensively, but he was one of the 10 best defensive players in the world. And he was a clutch 3-point shooter in the playoffs. Wallace plays almost every night, and few play harder than him. Last season’s grade: B-Joe Mussatto is a sports columnist for The Oklahoman. Maple Leafs analyst faces backlash over Mitch Marner take after Golden Knights’ loss
Former Toronto Maple Leafs winger and current NHL analyst Jay Rosehill drew criticism from fans Thursday night after commenting on Mitch Marner‘s performance following the Vegas Golden Knights‘ 4-2 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 5 of the 2026 Stanley Cup Final.Shortly after the defeat, Rosehill posted on X, saying, “Anyone notice Marner tonight? Was it a game 5-7 or something?”The remark immediately led to debate online, with many fans viewing it as an unfair reference to Marner’s playoff struggles during his years in Toronto. One fan replied, “Cherry picking the hate, can’t help yourself, Rosie?” Another responded, “Have you ever played a game 5 or 7 in the NHL? If you haven’t, you shouldn’t talk.”A fan reacted, saying, “Bro had a natural hat trick in a Stanley Cup Finals game LOOOOL give it a rest man.”The reaction came despite Marner’s dominant postseason run with Vegas. Although he was held off the scoresheet in Game 5, the winger still leads all players in playoff scoring with 29 points, including 10 goals and 19 assists.MORE: Ex-Maple Leafs winger rips Mitch Marner for playing like a ‘mouse’ in TorontoMarner also set a franchise record for the most points in a single postseason and produced the fastest hat trick in Stanley Cup Final history during Game 3.One fan said, “Lol, Leafs fans back from under their rocks.”A fan wrote, “You’re hating on someone who’s playing in the SCF while the team you cover didn’t even make the players. He also leads the league in playoffs points.”One user responded directly saying, “I did, and since he left for Vegas, he’s been a true impact player and is playing the best he ever has in his career… Turns out being a Leaf was what held him back all these years!”Golden Knights lacked so much more than one scoreless night from Mitch MarnerVegas Golden Knights right wing Mitch Marner (93) carries the puck against Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere (4) during the second period in game five of the 2026 Stanley Cup Final at Lenovo Center. Mandatory Credit: James Guillory-Imagn ImagesCarolina earned control of the series through structure, discipline, and special teams execution. The Hurricanes scored twice on the power play, with Andrei Svechnikov netting both goals. Sebastian Aho added his first goal of the Final, while Brandon Bussi made 23 saves.Vegas, meanwhile, lost momentum during a costly stretch of penalties and also saw center William Karlsson leave with a wrist injury. Head coach John Tortorella pointed to those turning points afterward.“I thought we had a good start,” Tortorella said. “We lost momentum when we went back-to-back in penalties. It’s about the same time that we lost Bill.”So, singling out Marner ignores the broader picture. Carolina’s aggressive checking limited Vegas’ transition game and disrupted its offensive rhythm. Marner did not generate his usual production, but the Golden Knights’ problems extended far beyond one player.MORE: Mitch Marner sets Stanley Cup Final record with fastest hat trick in NHL historyWith Carolina leading the series 3-2 and one win away from the Stanley Cup, Vegas must improve its discipline and depth scoring in Game 6. Marner remains the club’s offensive driver, and their chances of forcing Game 7 still run through him.Meanwhile, Tortorella is confident about forcing a Game 7, saying, “We gotta find a way. I’m gonna leave my clothes here, that’s for sure. They’ll be in the hotel.”

David Coulthard pushes back on ‘sensitive’ Lewis Hamilton complaints about media criticism
Photo by Marcel van Dorst/EYE4IMAGES/NurPhoto via Getty ImagesDavid Coulthard has dismissed suggestions that he’s been unfairly harsh on Lewis Hamilton, insisting he’s simply offering his perspective.During a rocky debut season with Ferrari, Hamilton faced plenty of backlash over how he was handling the transition.Looking ahead to his time with Ferrari, Hamilton had hoped to build a legacy similar to Michael Schumacher’s. He wanted to feel the same admiration from fans that Schumacher enjoyed during his career.Even after turning things around this season, some feel Hamilton still isn’t getting enough credit for his improved performances.David Coulthard defends his ‘honest’ criticism of Lewis Hamilton Appearing on the Drive to Wynn podcast, David Coulthard addressed why he’s been so critical of Lewis Hamilton, explaining that it comes down to his role as a pundit. While stressing that his comments weren’t personal, he made it clear that they were based on how Hamilton was performing at specific points in time.“Lewis is an incredible driver. No one can ever dilute what he’s achieved. I certainly don’t want to. Lewis quite often will reference the fact that there are a lot of doubters out there, and it’s great to show them what I’m doing.“If I was to ever make a comment about Lewis, it’s not because I doubt him. It’s because I’m commenting on that moment in history. In Lewis’ career, he more often than not beat his teammates… Then, in his last year at Mercedes, George was starting to look like the more consistent qualifier.“In his first year at Ferrari, Charles looked like the more consistent qualifier. This isn’t a rookie. This is Lewis Hamilton. People can say now they’re starting to develop the car towards his style…“I know Lewis is a bit sensitive to any criticism, but we all are… If I can have that honesty about myself, why would I be restricted in being in my opinion honest about other people’s performances?…”David Coulthard backs Lewis Hamilton to take first Ferrari win of the seasonLooking ahead to the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, Coulthard shared his thoughts on how Hamilton might perform.“I’m really interested to see Lewis in Barcelona, a track where there is a bit more space for dipping a wheel here and there.“Everything would indicate since the beginning of this year that he’s on form, he’s liking the car, he’s going to have a strong year, and probably win a Grand Prix at some point.”The shift in results has also been noticeable off the track. Hamilton’s body language around Ferrari has visibly improved as he’s started to find consistency again.Sitting second in the championship standings, Hamilton appears well-placed to launch his first serious title push in half a decade.Read more:Kimi Antonelli responds after Kim Kardashian stole his podium towel at Monaco GPAdidas set to use cooling vests designed for Mercedes-AMG F1 team at 2026 FIFA World CupKim Kardashian’s team shoved Holly Willoughby and Michael McIntyre during Sky Sports broadcast

Alpine driver Pierre Gasly has 3rd-place finish at Monaco reinstated after winning appeal
MONTMELO, Spain (AP) — Alpine driver Pierre Gasly's third-place finish at the Monaco Grand Prix was reinstated Friday after racing officials accepted an appeal filed by the Formula 1 team.Gasly finished the Monaco race third but was demoted to seventh place after race officials handed him two five-second penalties for allegedly going too fast in the pitlane. Alpine immediately appealed the ruling, and the FIA found that the timekeepers had erred in clocking his car's speed. The FIA said in an X post on Friday that “the stewards of the Monaco GP have rescinded Gasly’s penalties, effectively handing him back his third place finish.”Already on Thursday, the FIA said that it was considering Alpine’s appeal because the timekeepers at the Monaco race had provided evidence that they had made a mistake. FIA said that the “distance used in calculating” car speeds was wrong and “overestimated the speed” of Gasly’s car.The decision came five days after the Monaco race while teams were getting set to practice for the next race in Barcelona. It meant that Alpine has its first podium finish since 2024.Red Bull's Isack Hadjar will drop from third to fourth place in the Monaco results.___AP auto racing: https://apnews.com/hub/auto-racing

Barcelona refuse to give up on dream signing despite major obstacles
Barcelona refuse to give up on dream signing despite major obstaclesBarcelona’s pursuit of Julian Alvarez remains alive despite a series of complications that have threatened to derail one of the club’s most ambitious transfer operations.According to MARCA, the Catalan giants have not lost faith in their chances of signing the Atletico Madrid forward and continue to view him as the ideal player to lead the next phase of the project.Although negotiations have become increasingly difficult in recent weeks, especially after Real Madrid’s €150 million bid, Barcelona are still convinced that the deal can still be completed before the transfer window closes. The confidence comes from the belief that Alvarez wants to wear the Blaugrana shirt.Alvarez still a priority targetFor months, Barcelona have been working behind the scenes to strengthen their attack for the post-Robert Lewandowski era.Barcelona are not giving up on Alvarez. (Photo by Eric Alonso/Getty Images)Among all the names considered, Alvarez has consistently stood out as the club’s preferred option. In fact, both Deco and Flick view the Argentine as the perfect striker to spearhead the team’s future, thanks to his age, versatility and proven ability to perform at the highest level. The outlet mentions that discussions over a potential move began some time ago, but progress has not been as smooth as Barcelona initially expected. The biggest obstacle continues to be Atletico Madrid’s position, who are reluctant to lose one of their most important players and have shown little willingness to facilitate a transfer to a direct rival.Despite these complications, however, Barcelona have not changed their strategy and continue to work on the operation.Barcelona feel the player wants the moveAlvarez wants to play for Barcelona. (Photo by Justin Setterfield/Getty Images)One reason for the club’s optimism is their belief that Alvarez remains attracted by the possibility of joining Barcelona.According to the report, executives at the club are calm despite the slow progress because they feel the player’s desire to represent Barcelona could eventually prove decisive. With plenty of time remaining in the transfer window, and the World Cup sandwiched in between, there is no sense of panic within the club’s leadership. The hope is that patience will eventually be rewarded and that Alvarez will prioritise Barcelona if an agreement becomes possible.

Mexico triumphs in World Cup opener
Hosts Mexico beat South Africa 2-0 in a promising opening game of the men’s soccer World Cup. The tournament has been beset with fears over seat pricing and turnout, but the Azteca stadium was full and in carnival mode, with beer and paper sombreros raining from the stands. Concerns about violence following several cartel shootings in Mexico in recent months have, so far, not materialized either. But the opening game, featuring the one soccer-obsessed nation out of the three hosts, is the easy one: Czechia-South Korea, the night’s other game, had thousands of empty seats. And TV-watching fans were irritated to learn that hydration breaks were used by broadcasters as an opportunity to show ads, The Athletic reported.— Tom Chivers

Bath dealt Finn Russell injury blow ahead of Prem semi-final clash with Exeter
Bath have been dealt a major injury blow with Finn Russell ruled out of their Gallagher Prem semi-final clash with Exeter Chiefs.Russell missed the final two rounds of the regular season with a tight calf, but director of rugby Johann van Graan had expressed hope that the fly half would be available for the play-off encounter at the Rec. The Scotland playmaker is not sufficiently fit to feature, though, with Argentina international Santiago Carreras instead stationed at No 10. England international Guy Pepper is also unavailable in a blow to Bath’s impressive back row stocks. Tom Dunn and Quinn Roux return to the tight five from suspension with Van Graan favouring his usual six forwards to two backs bench split.Exeter, meanwhile, are without Ethan Roots with the back rower progressing through return to play protocols after suffering a head injury last weekend against Saracens.Greg Fisilau is a welcome returnee in his place, but there is no Immanuel Feyi-Waboso after the wing underwent a recent facial surgery. The winner of the clash at the Rec will take on either Northampton or Leicester in next week’s final at Twickenham’s Allianz Stadium.
